An extension to accommodate Stephanie’s Pop had been recently added to the home. This was lost in the fire too.

Devastated by blaze By JOLENE OGLE THE local community is rallying around a Cooroy family who lost everything in a house fire on Friday (14 August). Local paramedic Suzette Dakin had just dropped her son, Cole, at school on Friday morning when she returned to find her Black Mountain home on fire. Suzette’s daughter, Stephanie, said her family had lost everything, with her mother left

only with the clothes she was wearing that day. “Mum lost everything she owned except for her car and the clothes she had on that day,” she said. “My little brother and Pop also lived there and also lost all they had.” Stephanie was at work in Currimundi when she got the call to say her family home, where she had lived all her life, was on fire. Continued on page 5 Suzette with her daughter Stephanie and son Cole at their Black Mountain home last Christmas.

Traders caught out By JOLENE OGLE A COUNCIL audit of the Noosaville Industrial Zone has found 89 tenancies were non-industrial, meaning the businesses were in breach of the planning scheme. In a report to the planning and organisation committee on Tuesday 18 August, the staff report said 14 per cent of businesses in the Noosaville industrial zone were non-compliant, but recommended freezing any further breach action against existing

unlawful businesses established prior to the survey. In the report, planning and environment manager Kerri Coyle said the audit was carried out to create a register to help monitor businesses in the area, as well as inform tenants and owners on the purpose of the industrial zone and provide background data for future planning. As the only industrial zone in the coastal part of the shire, the establishment of retail or commercial office type business in the area has the potential to reduce the availability of

industrial land for industrial uses and detract from the role of business centres, the report said. But, Ms Coyle noted some of the industrial tenancies were too small to house an industrial business and said this would need to be taken into consideration in future planning discussions. In the planning and organisation meeting, Cr Tony Wellington said it was also important to note the impact of retail businesses that were not using designated retail centres.

“Siting retail-type businesses in industrial areas also means those businesses are not located in appropriate retail areas and that has an impact upon the viability of retail precincts,” he said. “It’s not just the impact in industrial zones, but you’re taking away from the retail areas.” Cr Frank Wilkie said retail businesses could also attract more traffic and industrial zones were designed to cope with the increased cars and parking needs.

Moving forward, the report recommends using the information gathered in the audit to inform land use decisions for the next planning scheme and until the review is undertaken “any further breach action against existing unlawful businesses established prior to the survey should be put on hold”. The report also recommends the industrial area should be monitored regularly to ensure further non-industrial businesses do not establish in the area.

HOLDING the hand of the dying isn’t something everyone would be able to do, but for the staff and volunteers at Katie Rose Cottage, it’s their job and passion. Since opening in 2010, more than 200 people have died at the Doonan community hospice, but the staff and volunteers will tell you there is nothing morbid about Katie Rose. “The hospice is a home away from home,” hospice president Frank Lewins said. “There is actually a lot of life here.” Perhaps, the most unexpected thing about the hospice is the calm and relaxed atmosphere of the palliative care facility, while one would expect a clinical environment the six rooms are actually surrounded by lush gardens and inviting spaces to sit and relax in the sun. “We do things differently here,” Frank said. “Friends and family can drop in and see their loved one whenever they like and they can bring the family dog, every room has a view of the gardens and we have a kitchen where guests can make their own meals at any time, if they like.” Frank compares the facility to an iceberg where the relaxed atmosphere is only the tip, and below lies a sound clinical basis for the facility to provide top-level care to the guests. “The care is never compromised because this isn’t a hospital,” he said. Since opening its doors almost five years ago, the facility has relied solely on the generous support of donations, the hard work of vol-

Executive officer John Bartsch said the hospice’s financial situation was always “precarious” with such a strong reliance on donations and the care facility run at no cost to guests, but four second hand stores throughout the Sunshine Coast helped provide over 60 per cent of the centre’s funding. “But we always need more, and we will gladly accept any donations,” he said. “We always say a dollar today is a dollar we didn’t have yesterday.” Former midwife Susan Musgrove is the centre’s palliative care nurse and one of only a handful of paid staff. In a move that was “inexplicable” for Susan, she decided to

move from midwifery into the field of palliative care when she returned to the workforce after raising her children. “There are actually a lot of parallels between the two professions, although on the surface they look poles apart,” she said. “In actual fact they’re very closely connected because they are both critical events in people’s lives and their family’s life.” For Susan, the opportunity to help guests and their families through the often traumatic time of death is what keeps her going. “As a palliative care nurse, you can help facilitate a better journey to death,” she said. “My job is 99 per cent communication. It’s incredibly rewarding, but it does affect you and you have

to be aware of that. “You have to make sure you have time out and realise its OK to be affected and its OK to have feelings and need to have a moment to yourself after a particularly difficult period or attachment has occurred. “You can’t just be completely emotionless about it, and I’ve always said when someone tells me I am then it’s time to decide to do something else.” It’s with thanks to the hard work of people like Susan that members of the Noosa community have a place to go when they can spend their final days in comfort and it’s because of the dedicated and hardworking volunteers and staff that we name Katie Rose Hospice as The Noosa Project’s unsung heroes. If you would like to donate to the Katie Rose Cottage hospice you can phone 5479 0881 or visit www.sunshinehospice.org.au/donations to find out more. Sticky Fingers headline festival

Maya Kelly will shave off her locks on Sunday 30 August.

Maya steps up for a close shave THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD Sunshine Beach High School student Maya Kelly will say goodbye to her long locks when she shaves for a cure on Sunday 30 August. Maya, who is a regular busker at the Noosa Farmers’ Markets, said she was inspired to shave her head after a boy at her school shaved his head for his girlfriend whose mum had died from cancer. “It seems like a good thing to do to raise funds,” she said. Maya said she has also experienced the loss of loved ones through cancer with a neighbour and teacher passing from the disease. Maya will shave her head at the Noosa Farmers’ Market on Sunday 30 August, at 9am, and hopes to raise $1000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. But her selflessness doesn’t stop there. Maya’s lopped locks will then be sent to the Alopecia Foundation so they can be made into a wig. Maya said she has already received great support for her pledge with locals donating to the cause and leaving messages

FOLLOWING on from the success of last year’s sell-out debut, the Originals Music Festival is back with another smoking line-up on Saturday 7 November. This year, scheduling issues have seen the popular festival move from Weyba Road in Noosaville to the soccer grounds in Coolum, but no quality has been lost in the move. The all-ages festival will have two main stages as well as one for up-andcoming school bands, and headlining this year’s festival is one of Australia’s hottest bands Sticky Fingers, whose set at last year’s festival had the crowd calling for more. Sharing the headline is rock/pop royalty Regurgitator, while local legends OKA will also play along with the Pierce Brothers, Bootleg Rascal, Dallas Frasca, The Hi-Boys, Triple J Unearthed winner Pro Vita and many more. This year’s festival will also incorporate the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troupe, didgeridoo and song and dance workshops, rides, stacks of international food stalls and a few special surprises. Tickets have been kept affordable at $50 per person in line with the festival’s community vibe. For more information and tickets, go to originalsmusicfestival.com

THE team at IGA Noosa Outlook were busy baking and icing cupcakes on Monday for the annual RSPCA Cupcake Day fund-raiser. Cupcake Day is not only a great excuse to eat sweet treats but also raises much-needed funds for the RSPCA to help animals in need. The team at IGA Noosa Outlook sold $400 worth of delicious cupcakes on the day, plus raised an extra $365 through a garage sale on the same day. A donation bin for pet food and blankets was also placed out the front of the store and IGA staff member Selena Fredericks said the donation bin was overflowing by the end of the day. All donated goods will be taken to the Noosa RSPCA. So far, more than $450,000 has been raised throughout Australia with more Cupcake Day events expected to be held throughout the month.

Fire service call is out DO YOU have what it takes to fight fires, conduct burn offs and help keep the community safe? The Tinbeerwah Rural Fire Brigade is looking for 10 more members who want to join the already 16-strong team that services Tinbeerwah and Cooroy. The role of a rural fire brigade volunteer can differ from day to day as Mother Nature and human error throw up an array of situations to deal with. Last year, the Tinbeerwah crew attended 85 call outs for a range of issues including flood clean-up, wildfires, house fires, plus three members were deployed to Western Australia in February this year to help volunteers fight large fires. The brigade trains the first Tuesday night and third Sunday morning of each month with maintenance night on the second Tuesday of each month. Crew leader Rohan Roylance has been fighting fires for more than 28 years and said the brigade

would suit anyone who worked traditional hours as well as those who work shift work and were around during the day. “As well as looking for people who are interested in undertaking as active fire-fighting role in the brigade, we are looking for people who are willing to undertake support roles,” he said. “These roles include secretary, treasurer, maintenance checks and station duties.” Rohan said those who were accepted into the Rural Fire Service would undertake a basic firefighting course so they were able to attend fire calls with the brigade. “Once the first officer feels a member is ready, they undertake further training which advances their firefighting knowledge, leadership skills, driving skills as well as other courses,” Rohan said. Anyone who wants to find out more information or wants to apply to be a part of the Rural Fire Brigade can call 5442 6999.

Do you have what it takes to fight fires, help locals with back burning and help the community? The Tinbeerwah Rural Fire Brigade wants you.

Devastated by blaze From front page “I got the call that Mum’s house was on fire,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it.” By the time Stephanie had returned to her home, there was nothing left. “Mum was outside sitting in an ambulance and the house was completely burned,” she said. “Mum had taken my brother to school. She had only been gone 15 minutes.” Bad mobile phone reception meant Suzette’s first call to the fire brigade was cut off, adding to the nightmare unfolding before her. “You would never think this would happen to you. Everyone’s a bit broken,” Stephanie said. “But the main thing is there was noone in the house at the time.” Since the house fire on Friday, community support has been flowing in for the local family. Stephanie says her mum Suzette is well-known in the community as a paramedic and she’s overwhelmed at the support. “Mum has done a lot of lovely work for the community over the years and now she needs a hand back,” she said. “Luke’s IGA in Cooroy has donated $1000 in food vouchers to help Mum and a local man offered six months’ accommodation, but we already have somewhere to stay so he donated $5000 instead. It’s just been amazing.” Luckily the home was insured and the family plan to rebuild in the future. If anyone would like to donate to the Dakin family to help them buy the essential items they need, a fund has been set up at the Bendigo Bank. The BSB is 633 000 and account number is 1554 4408 6.

Boomerang Bus comes back THE Boomerang Bus is coming to Noosa this weekend, with the bus pulling into the Sunspace Cafe, Doonan, on Saturday 22 August from 12noon. The Boomerang Bus is an initiative of SevGen, which is short for seven generations and is an Indigenous way of thinking that says we must consider our actions and deliberations of today that will affect people seven generations into the future. The Boomerang Bus provides an opportunity for schools and teachers to make a difference to educational outcomes in a different way. SevGen’s Terri Waller said the bus aimed to make a difference to educational outcomes

in a creative way, focusing on a method to help embed Indigenous Perspectives (EIP) in school curriculums. “After speaking with teachers about the slow results of the Education QLD imperative in 2009 to embed Indigenous Perspectives in the curriculum we identified three key barriers that were the issue,” she said. “With this in mind we developed the Boomerang Bus; an Indigenous initiative that focuses on these barriers. This should speed things up.” The launch on Saturday will be a gathering with a focus on sharing resources the Boomerang Bus has gathered as well as inform attendees of the methodology the SevGen

team believes is going to make a difference. “From this gathering we are hoping to identify teachers who are passionate about EIP and form an alumni of lead teachers who will lead the way forward supported by the Boomerang Bus,” Terri said. “SevGen believes there is a different way to be educated or ‘grown up’ in a loving, living, laughing, listening and learning place through playing autonomously in passion and purpose always. “We hold the space for you to discover your passion and give you space to practice mastery of that passion resulting in enjoyable, effortless learning.”

THE next Noosa Regional Gallery exhibition will feature artworks and iconic images showcasing the past 14 years of Floating Land. Opening on Saturday 29 August at 2pm, the exhibition marks the beginning of Floating Land 2015, which runs for seven weeks. Local artists and those from as far away as Victoria and Western Australia have contributed original artworks, samples and images of their works for inclusion in the retrospective exhibition. Noosa Regional Gallery director Nina Shadforth said she was delighted with the response to the call-out for the retrospective. “Artists across Australia have sent us maquettes, video blogs and images of their work, allowing us to mount an exhibition which highlights the passion surrounding Floating Land," Nina said. Floating Land started as a conversation between artists about art in the environment, and the conversation continues in 2015. Floating Land: Reflect and Re-imagine will reflect on the past and look to the future with artists and the community continuing the conversation about art in the environment. Floating Land 2015 will feature art installations and

The Arts Program at Boreen Point, over the October long weekend, will be a special focus for this year’s event, featuring artists at work, large scale art installations, community workshops and roaming musicians. Inspiring landscapes VIBRANT Noosa artist Sharon Jack is part of the current series of exhibitors in the PopUp Art Series Exhibition at the Cooroy Butter Factory. Sharon has viewed many contrasting landscapes through the years to inspire her art. Originally from the Gold Coast, she has lived in dry Central Queensland and the crisp mountain landscape of the Snowy Mountain region. But it wasn’t until she moved to the red desert country of the Pilbara in Western Australia that Sharon finally

discovered her true inspiration. “My favourite colours have always been reds, oranges, yellows and purples,” Sharon said. “Living in the Pilbara enabled me to utilise these colours while exploring that magnificent area and recreating it and its inhabitants on canvas.” “The canvas is my playground and the outback my muse,” Sharon explains. Sharon’s work is often described as “different and vibrant” with its warmth

of colours and simplicity of line while exhibiting a unique new approach to landscape. Subsequent to calling the Sunshine Coast home, Sharon has been invited back to the Pilbara region to exhibit her works at the Port Hedland Gallery. Her works can also be found in Brisbane restaurants and in corporate and personal collections. For more information: www.noosa. qld.gov.au/butter-factory-arts-centre or phone 5329 6580.

SOMEBODY once said ‘that behind every great man, is a great woman’ or the other good one is ‘happy wife, happy life’. Unfortunately, neither appear to be in the superlatives offered for the Australian Cricket Team performance in losing the Ashes. The dust hadn’t settled before former Test wicketkeeper Ian Healy was being attacked for his opinion of the value or not of having the wives on tour. Yes, maybe not politically correct, but he may have a point. Ian, a member of the 1989 Ashes winning Aussie side, recalling his early days said, ‘All the partners are here, and some of the most respected cricketers I played with hated that distraction’. Cricket is a sport that requires complete concentration. You need everything going for you, and I am not sure they’re pushing for that hard enough’. Apparently in Allan Border's day, he banned families of players from team hotel rooms until the series was won. He didn’t win many friends especially some wives, but he did win the Ashes. That approach has been adopted by many other teams/sports/ clubs, but I suppose it depends on how much emphasis is placed on winning. I think Australia and cricket in general have a much bigger problem at hand, if the story on last week's Four Corners relating to the power base in world cricket is true. Startling facts of a game for the people being taken over all because of the money and power it wielded. I think the Wag’s

story will die, but the Indian, English and Australian power play for money could ruin the game as we knew it. Before we know it, there could be only six to eight nations playing the game, certainly outweighing the issue of wives. I know Noosa surfboard manufacturer Peter White is happy to have his wife Janet's support, especially since the horrific fire in January. The pair have stood steadfastly since they lost about 400 surfboards, irreplaceable surfing memorabilia and a showroom of clothing. Janet was always positive ‘Peter was always going to keep making boards’. That is certainly the case, with a new showroom and new beginning, their company Classic Malibu have started exporting on the Chinese market. Their luck started from an on-line order and some discussions, then Peter travelled to the venue Hainman Island off China, packed with 20 boards which sold immediately. The boards were mainly the Classic Malibu long boards, and they have just started writing out orders for new ones. The former Melburnian couple are all smiles, and Iam sure Peter couldn’t have done it without Janet's support. I’ve noticed lately some letter writers complaining or suggesting that sport gets too much publicity and that education isn’t given the kudos it deserves. I agree, but not at the expense of people who are genuine sport lovers, with most just having a go and making life-long friendships. I am aware that Australia is a world competitor, and there needs to be a change or shake-up of school systems. It’s a wonderful world we live in. Until next time...

Horse lover’s dream realised AFTER a long two-year wait, long-time Noosa local and horse lover Patrick Lloyd has finally realised a dream. From the start of this month, Patrick can offer horse riding on Noosa North Shore. Patrick has lived in Noosa since he was 5 years old and has always had a love for the ocean and horses. Here's a chance to combine his two passions in a dream come true for the father of two. “I love horses and I love Noosa, to be able to bring the two together in such a way has really been something,” he said. “Messing about with horses is my absolute favourite thing to do. They are the most amazing creatures.” It’s been a testing two-year journey for Patrick to get permission to operate his horse riding business, Noosa Horses, on the beach, as only three permits are allowed at any time. However, Patrick has managed to secure a sub-contracting role from one of the permit holders. “You keep telling yourself you’ll get it done, but until you actually do, it’s just not the same,” he said. Patrick said he still faced a battle with council and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services to find a place to set down the horses that would be more user friendly. However, he said

Patrick Lloyd with one of his horses, Jarrah. in the meantime a North Shore local was helping him out with a place to set-up the tours. “I’ve been running trail rides out of Ringtail State Forest for over 18 months now, but people always ask me if I do beach rides, too,” he said. “It’s great to say I can now offer beach rides.”

Patrick offers intimate twoperson rides along the Noosa North Shore and said he enjoyed showing visitors the beautiful Noosa beach he grew up on. As well as horse rides, Patrick also has three ponies and can offer pony rides for children.

Three decades of service NOOSA local and dedicated volunteer Judith Murray has spent more than 30 years devoting her time to Endeavour Foundation, and now her efforts have been recognised with an Honorary Life Membership. Endeavour Foundation board director Suzie Thorpe said Judith was the essence of what the foundation was founded on; incredibly generous people giving of themselves for the betterment of those with disabilities. “She deserves more than her Honorary Life Membership, as without the ‘Judiths’ of our organisation, we would never have the service to disabilities we have now,” she said. Judith said while she was happy to receive the reward, it was really a team effort. “The only way that I have been able to do the work that I have done for the organisation, is with the help of a great group of volunteers,” she said. Judith has continually had a heart for charitable causes, after moving to Noosa Heads in the late ’80s she was elected as sub-branch president and helped run the op shop that was originally based on Weyba Road but later moved to Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. Judith also arranged donations for Sylvania School, which was the Endeavour Foundation school in Nam-

The volunteers would sell raffle tickets and stocked street stalls with craft items and home cooking. “Over the years, I have developed great memories of the many volunteers, including two people who were over 85, who would deliver the rags to garages. There were dedicated volunteers, who worked each week for over 20 years, and other important people, ‘the relievers’, who could fill roster vacancies,” she said. Judith’s workload didn’t ease when she took on the role of overseeing the Tewantin Recycled Clothing Store in 1998. While there, she received and sorted through donations and delivery stock, organised prices, tidied the store, and attended to the paperwork, among other roles. She also wore the hat of roster clerk, which meant she had to work out volunteer spots to fill, and if Judith had no luck in finding volunteers - she would fill in. Endeavour Foundation has more than 1200 volunteers who are at the backbone of its operations. They work at its retail and industry sites and share their skills with people with a disability who work or access support at the organisation. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit www. endeavour.com.au for more information.

Mick Hatten, Steve Drake and Bruce Huntington stand proudly before the war memorial at the Tewantin cemetery. by year's end Bruce and Kay were in Tewantin. By 1981 he reactivated his service to the RSL by joining the Tewantin sub-branch. Bruce first started his involvement with the cemetery in 2003 but then endured a forced break for two years due to illness. “All up now I have been doing this for 10 years and it has definitely been worth the effort. There have, of course, been support people with me and over the years we have come a long way.” It was mid-morning on a mild winter's day, and as we sat and talked, despite the cemetery being located roadside to a main highway, the noise was hardly noticeable. It was as if the vehicular traffic kept its noise to a minimum as a sign of respect to those who lay at rest. “Despite our location there is a feeling of solitude,” Bruce said. “And I think this is what gives us such a nice feeling. The addition of the section that we call the Memorial Walk, over there on our left, has really added dignity to the whole project. We are grateful to the council, we approached them for the land and they agreed.” On entering the cemetery there are the normal grave sites with headstones fronted by white surrounds. After passing these you come to the Columbarium. This is a threepart brick wall structure which contains recesses in the walls to receive ashes of the deceased.

QUIET Beachside

The next section is the lawn cemetery which has plaques containing the relevant information of the deceased laid neatly in rows, and topped with flowers. As we walked through this section Bruce would stop and point out different names. Names like Skelton, Johns, Cardwell, Ross and Lack, just to name a few ... some former members of his sub-branch, others just old Digger mates with whom he shared a cold beer on a hot day. “You can see why this project has become something special to me. When something becomes personal like this I make doubly sure I do a good job - you know - keeps it looking good.” Between the grave section and the Memorial Walk stands the Honour Wall. Built in three sections, there are two side walls, each naming six conflicts involving our forces, and these stand at an angle from the main centre wall, which faces the cemetery. Against a background of black marble tiles, is placed an Eternal Flame Replacer and below it the words Lest We Forget. To the front of the right wall stands the flag pole. Dedicated on 20 November, 2011, the service was conducted by Padre Wing Commander Paul Goodland. The Memorial Walk is something altogether different. This sectional has small light gravel pathways with the area divided into sections, thus enabling the visitor to walk through-

out and understand the significance. “On either side of the pathways you see there are white pegs, about 560 of them, just a small distance apart. In time these will be replaced by small plaques imbedded in a little concrete pillar and these will indicate the resting place of loved ones. Each has a small number attached and all are properly recorded,” Bruce said. Between the pathways and the boundary fence there many small trees with leaves lying all around. In among all this you will see small white crosses and white columns bearing plaques on which are the names of battlefields from every conflict from the Boer War to Afghanistan - The Western Front, Gallipoli, the Somme, Tobruk, Kokoda, Coral Sea, Sandakan, Kapyong, Long Hais and Long Tan. “I feel that the Battle Honours presented like that creates an atmosphere and helps people understand more,” Bruce said. Already along the pathway there are occasional names of old Diggers on plaques and as we came to the end of the walk one in particular caught my eye. The inscription read: Captain Stanley Young Bisset MC OAM MID 2/14TH Battalion - and this stopped me dead in my tracks. Here was a plaque acknowledging a man considered by many Australians to be a legend. Not only as digger, but also as a sportsman, a Wallaby.

QUIET Riverside

s

When Captain Bisset died, his passing was announced in the Sydney Morning Herald, 7 October, 2010, under the heading “A standout on the fields of war and sport”. Among the Diggers, his courage during the Kokoda campaign was to become the start of the legend. “He spent many years in retirement living in Noosa Waters. He was a real good bloke, well respected by all who met him; a real gentleman,” Bruce said. As we walked through the cemetery, it became obvious that this was not his only concern, for like a lot of ex-servicemen he is deeply worried regarding the welfare of those returning from active service. “For me when I came home my dad, a WWII veteran, was a big help. When these people come home we have to be there for them. We all have to become more aware.” For Bruce (also a past president of the sub-branch) and wife Kay, a veteran of some 10 years service to the ladies auxiliary, the RSL is definitely a family affair. It is this form of dedication that makes our RSL clubs what they are today. At the Dawn Service on 25 April, 2016, when the Last Post is played, join the bus crowd and visit the cemetery. If, like me, you have not done this before, we can show due respect to not only Bruce and the sub-branch, but also to those old warriors who lay at rest - for they are truly Our People.

TOO often they become like gardens of stone. Mere headstones in a garden of out-of-control trees and grass, sometimes chipped, sometimes so neglected that the names of the dearly departed are not able to be read. Happy to relate this is not the case at the RSL Cemetery in Tewantin; the cemetery in which those men and women of our district who have served their country are laid to rest. Situated at the Cooroy end of the lot, as you approach what greets the eye is definitely an endeavor of pride; and this will leave you with a feeling that will linger long after you have payed your respects. To say that those who lie at rest in this most sacred of places are gone but not forgotten, is very true. “This cemetery is unique in as much as it is one of only five owned by the RSL throughout Australia. We are very proud of this, and the way in which it is kept has many families contacting us to say thanks for the respect that we show their family members,” Tewantin RSL Subbranch president Steve Drake said. To not only achieve this overall standard but also maintain it through the years is no easy task. In cases such as this there is usually one person who is willing to not only drive it, but also stay there for the long run. In this instance the person responsible is Bruce Huntington, member of the board of directors for the Tewantin sub-branch. Bruce Huntington is a definite local. Born in Pomona he spent an early part of his education as a student of the Tewantin State School, before shifting to Sydney where he completed his education at the Newtown Technical College. After finishing school Bruce entered the workforce being apprenticed as a wall and floor tiler. Bruce received his call up to National Service in 1965 but it was delayed because of his apprenticeship. On entering the army and completing basic training at Kapooka, he was posted to a unit in Brisbane; then in 1967/68 did a tour of duty in Malaya, serving as a member of the 8th Battalion. After his army years he returned to Sydney and joined the RSL subbranch at Five Dock Sydney. It was here that he met Kay, daughter of the sub-branch president, the lady who a year later was to become his wife. It was in 1972 that Bruce decided that he had enough of Sydney, and

Government help urged THE National Stroke Foundation is calling for improved systems for detecting and managing stroke risk after the release of new data indicating one in five Australians is affected by multiple chronic diseases. Following the release of the statistics, the stroke foundation is calling on the government to save lives and money through early detection of chronic disease risk. The foundation's clinical council chairman Dr Bruce Campbell said the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) chronic disease data demonstrated the urgent need for national government action to support routine health checks by GPs to reduce stroke and heart disease through earlier detection of hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation and chronic kidney disease. “The data shows 20 per cent of Australians are currently suffering from multiple chronic conditions increasing their chance of stroke, which places a significant drag on Australian health care resources with large economic, social and individual costs,” he said. “Frighteningly, almost 40 per cent of Australians aged 45 and over were found to have multiple chronic conditions and their impact is set to worsen as the population ages.

The National Stroke Foundation is calling for better screening of patients at risk of chronic disease. “The Federal Government must act now to reduce chronic disease and address its impact into the future.” Dr Campbell said stroke, heart disease, diabetes and kidney diseases shared common risk factors so a simple combined assessment with GPs for the risks would prevent significant disease and thousands of hospital admissions. “There will be more than 50,000 strokes in Australia and that number is expected to almost double by 2032,” he said. “We need to take action now before it’s too late.” To find out more about strokes and the warning signs, visit www. strokefoundation.com.au

Being a bit smarter in the sun YOUR sunscreen is an important factor in keeping your skin protected from the effects of the outdoors yet with so much choice on the shelves how do we know what is best for both the inside and out when it comes to skin protection. Sharon Cassidy from Riverside Beauty shares some tips on sunscreen. THE Australian Sunscreen Standard recommends an SPF of 30-plus. The sunscreen must also have the expiry date (usually one to two years) and storage conditions. Sharon says: “It’s not worth the risk if your sunscreen has expired. Not only might it not be protecting you effectively from the sun’s rays but the greasiness and chemicals from expiring may also be affecting your skin in other ways". Over exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause short-term health effects such as sunburn. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation can increase the risk of damage to the skin and eyes in the form of skin cancers and cataracts. UVA was always thought to be the less threatening of the suns rays and most of us have been exposed to large amounts of UVA throughout our lifetime. Although less intense then UVB, UVA rays are 30-50 times more prevalent and can penetrate clouds and glass. Research is now showing UVA penetrates the skin more deeply and plays a major part in skin ageing, wrinkling and some forms of skin cancers. It is also the dominant tanning ray. UVB is the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn and tends to damage the skin's more superficial epidermal layers. It plays a key role in the

Actinica Liposomal Sunscreen is SPF 50-plus and water resistant for up to four hours. development of skin cancer and contributes to tanning and photoaging. UVB rays are more intense during the hotter months from about 10am to 4pm but they can burn and damage skin all year round. “Where you can, always try to have a broad spectrum sunscreen and keep applying throughout the day but especially when you are outdoors or driving,” Sharon said. “When you wear sunscreen the SPF (sun protection factor) indicates how long it will take for the UVB rays to redden skin when using a sunscreen compared to how long it would take if they were not wearing it. “The purpose of using sunscreen is to reduce UV ray exposure not to extend time spent outside in the sun.

Stick with the 30-plus where possible and avoid sitting in direct sunlight where you can.” There are two types of sunscreens - chemical absorbers and physical blockers. Chemical absorbers are the most common as they absorb the UVR with a chemical barrier. A sunscreen that scatters or reflects UV rays from the skin is a physical blocker and is mostly associated with zinc creams. However more and more of these types of blockers are coming onto the market as they able to both block and absorb, thus giving the user even more protection. Sharon said studies have found physical sunscreens are significantly less allergenic or irritating as they do not penetrate the epidermis and are recommended for acne or sensitive skin sufferers. So what should you look for? For women, healthy skin is an important factor in their skin regime, but many sunscreens can be greasy and clog up pores. Sharon said when it comes to keeping your skin healthy, protecting it from harsh weather elements is always important. Riverside Beauty is at 6 Thomas Street, Noosaville. Limit exposure to the winter sun THE Cancer Council is concerned Queenslanders may be placing themselves at serious risk of skin damage by seeking additional sun exposure to boost vitamin D levels during winter. Despite common concerns about Queenslanders not getting enough sunshine during colder months, the latest figures show 85 per cent of the state maintain adequate vitamin D during winter. Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said it was a major misconception that most Queenslanders were vitamin D deficient and needed to seek sunshine to boost their levels. “Queensland is the Sunshine State - we have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and are at risk of skin damage even in winter,” Ms Clift said. “The majority of Queenslanders only need a few minutes of sun exposure on most days, even in winter, for sufficient levels of vitamin D. “This exposure should occur before 10am or after 2pm even on cooler and cloudier days. “Exposure to harmful UV radiation between 10am and 2pm, even in winter in Queensland, can significantly increase a person’s risk of skin cancer. “Queenslanders only need a small amount of sun expo-

Queenslanders are risking skin damage when seeking a Vitamin D boost from the sun during winter, the Cancer Council warns. sure to receive adequate vitamin D, and most people get it through typical outdoor dayto-day activities. “Just five or six minutes of sunshine is adequate exposure to maintain healthy vitamin D levels - hanging your clothes on the washing line or walking to your mailbox, for example. “It’s important for Queenslanders to prioritise sun safety and ensure full sun protection when outdoors, and the UV Index level is three or above.” Older adults, people with naturally very dark skin, patients with osteoporosis, people who get limited sun exposure and people with obesity are at the highest risk of vitamin D deficiency.

A small amount of vitamin D can be obtained through dietary intake, through foods such as oily fish (salmon and tuna), cod liver oil, milk, eggs, sardines and Swiss cheese. Queenslanders with any questions about vitamin D intake should contact their GP. Sun protection is required when the UV Index is three and above. In Queensland, the UV Index is three and above all year round, so sun protection is required in every season. Queenslanders can stay up-to-date with winter UV Index levels via the Cancer Council’s free SunSmart app. More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available via 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au

Janet’s loving pop-up fashion LOCAL designer and wholesaler Janet Schwizer’s store Heartfelt is the latest business to “pop-up” in Noosa Junction, adding to the excitement of the retail centre. Janet said she enjoys selling her fashion label through pop-up shops as they add an element of excitement to the street. “Pop-up shops are great for local business and bring a new energy to the street,” she said. And there certainly was an air of excitement as locals dropped in to see what was on offer in the new pop-up shop at Noosa Junction. “I like to make sure there is something new for the locals to see each week,” Janet said. Janet has had two previous pop-up shops in Noosaville and said they have always been a great success and a fabulous way to keep in touch with customer’s needs. “I like people and meeting new people,” she said. “I’m a wholesaler but this shop is a great way to meet my customers and find out what they want.” Specialising in gorgeous summer clothing, all of Ja-

LETTERS More shops needed

Civic woes

AS I understand it, in the retail sector, a greater number of shops - and a greater variety of shops available - serves to attract more customers. Noosa Civic needs more shops. My friends and I frequently drive down to Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore to spend the day shopping. Noosa Civic cannot provide this level of retail business. The reason shops are empty is because the centre is not attracting enough customers as there aren’t enough shops to warrant going there. Getting parking in Hastings street is impossible and Noosa Junction is a business centre and does not have the variety needed. Extending Noosa Civic would mean that more people would stay in the area to shop. We need this variety to keep business here in Noosa. Lynne Bedogni, Noosaville.

I HAVE lived in Tewantin since 1986. I go to Noosa Civic at least three times a week. There are five coffee shops, four jewellery shops, endless clothing shops and at least three shoe shops. The chemist is stuck right down the other end. The other issue is, over the years, the amount of vacant shops. We need to find out why people still go to Maroochydore so that if the Civic Expansion goes ahead perhaps filling those needs would be wise. I go to Maroochydore because I need to go to Kmart, Chemist Warehouse, to look at the Mix range of clothing attached to Coles, the price attack chemist near Kmart, the movies, Target, Best and Less and the large variety of eating places. I also go to Maroochydore for a change of venue. For me, if we can’t have some useful retail stores in the expansion, I am against going ahead. Lindy Owen, Noosa.

THE Federal Government’s proposed 26 per cent carbon emission reduction target, which they plan to table at this year’s UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, is frankly embarrassing. Tony Abbott and Greg Hunt’s use of rubbery figures to come up with a credible sounding emission reduction target may fool some into believing they are taking the matter seriously, however I’m confident the global community won’t be quite so gullible. Abbott’s “coal is good for humanity” climate change policies lock Australia into remaining the highest per capita carbon emitters in the OECD and with Mr Hunt, our so-called Environment Minister caught throwing out the rule book in his attempt to approve the massive Adani coal mine, our international credibility on this issue is all but shot. The science is well and truly in and it proves immediate action must be taken to reduce fossil fuel pollution and in Australia’s political landscape, only the Greens can boast a genuinely responsible climate change policy. Aaron White, Kin Kin.

Government jobs NOOSA Residents and Ratepayers president, Dr Brian Stockwell (Noosa Today, 13 August) reports on some worthwhile research his organisation has conducted into the State Government presence in the Noosa Shire. Official data reveals that just 1.5 per cent of Noosa’s population is in government employment compared with 3.5 per cent in South East Queensland. While reliance on government jobs is by no means the last word in diversifying the Noosa economy, it would have an important contributory role to play in establishing a sound platform for future growth and prosperity in the shire. Dr Stockwell has said he will seek support from local parliamentarians to encourage the State Government to “decentralise an appropriate unit within government to Noosa”. The Noosa Parks Association has already expressed its position that the Noosa Civic business centre must offer something other than “more retail” and agrees with Dr Stockwell that inviting a government presence is highly desirable. NPA, and we feel certain other community organisations, will be happy to join Noosa Residents and Ratepayers in its advocacy. Ingrid Jackson, Honorary Secretary, Noosa Parks Association.

Speak for yourself BENNY, come on mate, you’ve suffered too many head shots. How does a respected champion boxer and sports commentator become a mouthpiece for the rapacious developers? Strong words but true, the well-being of the community comes a poor second to profit. The Stocklands and Mark Stockwells of the world develop land for one reason - profit. Not the good of the community but for themselves. Look south from Sunshine beach and you see a skyline dominated by empty concrete monstrosities on the horizon. Look north from Alexandra Headlands and you see a green landscape. That Benny is what we continue to fight. Noosa Civic was a cash cow and a small retailers nightmare, you want more of that? We don’t want to fulfil the Beattie/Bligh dream of a sea of mediocrity stretching down to North Lakes. We, that is normal people without vested interests, want to enjoy living with nature, not empty shopfronts. Benny I have been in this industry for 20-plus years and “development” is fuelled by the greed of a few to the detriment

Benny's glass jaw YOUR correspondent Benny Pike likes to give his opinion and also to criticise others. But he gets as prickly as an echidna when the tables are turned. What a hypocrite! Using almost his entire column to respond to my previous letter, Pike shows himself to be not only thin-skinned, but also extremely arrogant. How dare he question whether I am working or retired, involved in community groups, and how long I have lived here? The clear presump-

tion is that I have to conform to some sort of stereotype for him to value my opinion. Like Langbroek, Pike is all for progress, and it appears that he doesn’t care what form it takes. All progress is good it seems. If Noosa had taken that attitude over the past half century, it wouldn’t today be a tourism powerhouse and a great place to live. Speaking of which, Pike lives in Doonan presumably not in Noosa Shire. Should that make his own opinion any less relevant? Gary Bright, Noosaville.

Part of us HILLARY Clinton has said “Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones, and they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage.” Barack Obama has said “I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.” “Every single American - gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, transgender - every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of our society. It’s a pretty simple proposition.” David Cameron has said “I say: Yes, it’s about equality, but it’s also about something else: commitment. Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other. So I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I’m a Conservative. But Warren Truss has said: “Same sex marriage is not about equality.” Thankyou Warren Truss for clearing up this matter. We also thank you for advising us that the lunch you had at Berardo’s restaurant with Tony Abbott (in Noosa QLD) was not taxpayer funded. Robin Bristow, Noosaville.

using a web-based clicker tool.

He will also deliver a presentation on emerging employment trends and their impact on the property market. Mr Boyd said the annual event provided an opportunity for industry experts and the general public to engage in interactive discussion on the Sunshine Coast’s residential, commercial and retail property markets. “This the only event of its nature that delivers a comprehensive view of all property sectors, including turnover trends, current conditions and future opportunities,” Mr Boyd said. “The event also allows us to capture current sentiment, as we encourage audience members

Attendees will hear presentations by local property experts from Savills, Herron Todd White, Colliers International and Ray White Commercial, and will be invited to respond to a series of polls While responses over the past few years have been relatively subdued, Mr Boyd said he expected the industry to take a more positive view this year. “We saw last year that most individual markets had advanced toward the bottom of the cycle, or had begun an upturn,” he said. “This year we’re hoping to see whether this trend has continued, and whether commercial property has followed the residential market into an upturn.” More than 60 industry professionals and 20 USC students are expected to attend. Mr Boyd said the event provided an excellent opportunity for students to participate in discussions that would help shape the future of the local property industry.

Insights into sustainable living SEPTEMBER 13 marks the annual Sustainable House Day for 2015; a celebration of sustainable living. FIRST held in 2001, SHD is an initiative of the Australian Solar Council and over the years has given visitors a chance to inspect houses that have been designed, built or renovated with sustainability in mind. Participants can also take advantage of the chance to talk with the owners and receive advice and information about how to live sustainably. It is the only national event of its

kind, offering a unique education opportunity for the general public to view and access practical information on sustainable living from fellow homeowners who are living greener. As well as workshops in major cities throughout the nation, local community groups and home owners can also get involved by opening their home to the community. This year, former Greens candidate and local Joe Shlegeris is holding

an event that will talk about electric transport. The community is invited to get together on Sunday 13 September, at 175 Lake Wayba Drive, Noosaville, from 10am to 4pm to hear about what other people are doing and to talk to experts in many fields. A few of the topics to be covered include solar powered cars, solar hot water, green waste bins, new electricity tariffs and how to go off-grid.

National Sustainability Day is on Sunday 13 September. Don't miss the opportunity to learn more about living off the grid or how to best use solar power.

Mason Rack will perform at the Tewantin Noosa RSL on Friday 21 August.

Coast’s own kings of cool TEARING up the stage doesn’t even come close to describing a Mason Rack performance. From the first wailing notes of his lap slide guitar, you know you’re in for something really special – simultaneously roaring then suddenly soothing; Rack and band mates leave their audience open-mouthed and begging for more. Originating from the Gold Coast in Queensland, Mason Rack Band is not afraid to break all the musical genre rules. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Known for a swampy blues rock sound, the band influences include flashes of Tom Waits and Muddy Waters with roots extending to Ben Harper. Throw in a slide guitar, raspy vocals, rocking bluesy bass, massive drum percussion and the result is a spectacular kaleidoscope of musical genres. The Mason Rack Band pours out tunes influenced by blues, southern stomp, swamp, classic rock and alternative music. Songwriter, Mason Rack is a natural entertainer, from a tapestry of slide guitar, deep broken

glass vocals and story fuelled blues rock. “I just want to bring the best, meanest, horniest, rockin’, swampy, smoky, blues music to my audience,” Mason said. Mason Rack Band is a three-piece ensemble with guitar, bass, drums and torchy vocals and is renowned for their amazing live stage performances. The band has played alongside artists including Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson, Buddy Guy and Keith Urban to name a few.

They are consummate festival performers having made appearances at the Adelaide International Guitar Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Blues on Broadbeach, East Coast Blues and Roots and the Gympie Muster to name a few. They’ve also developed an international fan base with Canadian festival goers and airplay in Europe, Japan, Canada and the US. Mason won the 2007 Q-Song Award “Best Blues and Roots Song” for “Dust” together with Sydney legend Steve Balbi. From smooth bal-

lad to raging raw rock, Mason Rack Band burns hot. Ignited by the power of Mason’s unstoppable energy, soulful voice and passion live on stage and a drum show-eagerly anticipated by those that know. You can catch them at TewantinNoosa RSL in the Diggers Bar, on Friday 21 August, from 8pm. Tickets are available from reception or dial’n’charge on 5447 1766 for only $10 for non-members and free for members.

LIVETODAY Trevor Tunnington in action.

Here come the fabulous Schremmer sisters The fastest paddler on earth SPEAKING of stand-up paddle champions, I think Noosa can lay claim to a little bit of ownership of Trevor Tunnington – even though the 18-year-old new “Fastest Paddler on Earth” was born Kiwi and lives at Twin Waters – by virtue of the fact that he works as an instructor at Noosa Stand Up Paddle.

The big 4-0 ... wow, it seems like only yesterday when the missus and I were celebrating our arrival at maturity while at the same time lamenting the beginning of middle age, and I suspect there might be a few readers out there who might remember Filthy Phil’s 40th hat party at Palmers. But now the eldest of the next generation has reached that milestone, celebrated with a great shindig at the Sunshine Surfie last weekend. Sophie McCallum, seen here with hubbie Jay, is a great teacher, wife, mother, singer, daughter, stepdaughter and friend. May she have many more celebrations.

WE’RE coming up to the 25th anniversary of the Noosa Malibu Classic/Noosa Festival of Surfing next March, and through my involvement in most of them, I’ve met surfers and surfing families from all over the world, and many of them have become firm friends. These days we have a dozen or more countries represented each year, including extended family groups and whole clubs from California, Hawaii and all over Europe, but back in the previous century, Hawaii’s Bonga Perkins was about the only international, and he kept taking home the trophy! With the introduction of the festival concept in 1998, we dug deep and flew a bunch of legends in, notably big wave hero Greg Noll from California, and world champ Rusty Keaulana from Makaha, Hawaii. After the favourable word of mouth from that, the floodgates opened. The entire Keaulana clan (Hawaiian surfing royalty) descended on us the following year, and wonderful characters of surfing, like surfer/shaper the late Donald Takayama and Waikiki surf instructor Clyde Aikau (from another regal family) became regulars. I knew Clyde from the '70s, when we didn’t like each other much, but we’d bro’ed down in France and Uncle Clyde became a wonderfully reassuring presence in Noosa. The roll call has changed over the years, but the spirit remains the same. Now we have a fantastic crew of young Hawaiian girls, led by Hawaii’s champion junior Honolua Blomfield and her lovely mum, Lyn. The contingent grows each year, and last March the amazing Schremmer sisters joined the party. Although their parents are beach people rather than dedicated surfers (dad Mike is an ER doctor and former college swimmer, mum Patty a former pro golfer), Mason, 14, Lola, 13, and Scarlett, 8, were introduced to the

The teenager blew minds at the Lost Mills flatwater event in Germany last week, part of the European pro tour, when he stormed home to take the 200-metre time trials by a solid two seconds, leaving world number one Connor Baxter in his wake. Baxter turned the tables in the long distance event, with Trevor content with a second behind his idol, but it was all Tunnington’s meet, when he proved his versatility and took a third in a classy field in the 18.8 kilometre marathon. Trevor is also a very accomplished SUP surfer, as the photo (supplied by his mum) attests. What a future this kid has!

surf as babies by the Waikiki beach boys, when the family relocated from Florida. Now they’re all rising stars, but more importantly, they live the spirit of surfing (gorgeous little Scarlett, the youngest competitor in 2015, even sent us a heartfelt thank you card). Our media manager, Tommy Leitch, emailed Patty to ask her impressions of the family’s first Noosa Festival. This is what she wrote: “We are more than excited to return to the Noosa Festival of Surfing. We had such a fantastic experience this year, with many lasting impressions. Lovely beaches, friendly people, incredible surfers, great surf breaks, and the festival was so impressive. The support and enthusiasm for the event is fantastic. The athletes and the sponsors, the local restaurants, shops, tourists, all seem to share the stoke. The staff at the Noosa Visitor Centre guided us to so many fun spots when we were looking to venture outside of surfing. We loved the markets, the Australia Zoo, the coffee shops, and the wildlife of the Noosa National Park. “We loved the variety of events that could be surfed, from SUP to team to tandem. We also enjoyed the stadium feel of the viewing area at Noosa and how easy it is to be a spectator and actually view the surfers. We have shared our love of the event with many of our surf friends around the world and have recruited more surfers to attend the next festival. “The Noosa Festival of Surfing is top notch! Organisation, participation, personality, announcers, viewing, variety of events, the beer garden, overall venue. The girls loved that there were many entrants in their divisions and that the aloha spirit was alive and well in the water. We look forward to reconnecting with some of the friends we made and we will enjoy the positive stoke that defines the festival.” Thank you, Patty, and take a bow, Noosa. Oh, and if you’re a young female competitor, take note: Mason Schremmer won both under 18 SUP and longboard divisions at the US Scholastics in June, and finished second in both at the Surfing America nationals. Lola finished second to her sister in the scholastics SUP,

Ten days to jazz it up LET the drums roll out and let the trumpets call; it’s almost time for the 10-day celebration of jazz music with the Noosa Jazz Party. Event organiser and president of the Noosa Heads Jazz Club Richard Stevens said this year’s party will be the biggest, most entertaining and most diverse since he started organising the event in 1992. The Chorale and The Australian Jazz Ensemble will kick off the party on Friday 28 August and Saturday 29 August with songs

from hit Broadway musicals and jazz classics. Over the 10 days of the jazz party, Noosa will host national and international performers who will take to the stage in restaurants and local venues, plus pop-up bands will be playing around the streets of Noosa. Richard said local venues and restaurants were quick to come to the party and join the line-up, including Miss Moneypenny’s on Hastings Street which will have a special dinner menu and live

music for the Jazz Party, plus the Riverdeck Restaurant and Rump House at Noosa Marina which will take part in the two-boat Jazz Cruise. The highlight of the jazz party will be the four-night concert at The J on Thursday 3 September where French singer Tricia Evy and Australian jazz queen Juliarna Clark will perform with 32 of Australia’s ace jazzmen in six hours of non-stop music each night from 5pm. “We’ve kept the original 1992

concept of the party,” Richard said. “We’re bringing together individual musicians to form into bands or smaller quartets and they will pop up in places in Noosa where you least expect them.” The festival will round out with a free public concert on 6 September at the Park Riverstage next to the Noosa Yacht Club, Noosaville. To see the full program or to buy jazz party tickets, phone 5447 2229 or visit www.noosajazzclub. com/noosa-jazz-party.

Amanda went extra mile THE Peregian kindy is sad to say goodbye to one of their special staff members after 15 years of championing what continues to lie at the very core of the kindy - a child’s right to play. Amanda Dowie, the multitalented kindy assistant, honed many skills over the years: Playdough-maker extraordinaire, green-frog relocator, champion hugger, gardener, problem-solver, shoulder to cry on, volcano-maker, photographer and first-aid whizz, to name a few and all in the name of helping children play. Often seen arriving at work before 7am, Amanda set very high standards for herself and really went the extra mile for many families.

Get into easycare guppies

By JOLENE OGLE

Guppies are probably the most popular livebearer among both aquarium owners and advanced breeders. native from Mexico to Guatemala. Livebearers generally require harder water with pH over neutral - temperature: 22oC - 27oC, pH: 6.5-7. 8 with a general hardness: 100300ppm. Almost all of these livebearers are top feeders and will readily take most artificial and frozen foods. However, they should be given a diet with high vegetable content, and a dry food like a Spirulina Tropical Flake should be used occasionally. The fry are about 7 to 10mm in length when born and are probably the most easily raised species as they will feed off finely ground dry foods and do not require smaller live foods like most other species when beginning to feed.

By RICHARD MURRIHY GUPPIES are probably the most popular livebearer among both aquarium owners and advanced breeders. The once humble, dullcoloured guppy has become a sought after fish for hobbyists who are interested in genetic processes, resulting in many varieties of spectacular colourations and finnage. Their ease of breeding means it is the first species many hobbyists begin to breed. However, because of intense breeding, fancier guppies can be harder to maintain. Platys and Swordtails are of the same genus and are very similar in some aspects in fact, interbreeding between the two species is possible. The main difference is that male Swordtails have a ‘sword’ on their tails. These two groups of fishes are also popular, colourful and active. These fish are robust and tolerant of a wide range of aquarium conditions and are recommended for beginners. Mollies also make a great addition to the community aquarium and come in a range of bright colours. These species belong to the livebearing Tooth Carp family of guppies which originated from South America and the West Indies. Mollies are native from Mexico to Venezuela. Platys and Swordtails are

They are compatible with most community species in a densely planted community tank. While there are many beautiful wild forms of livebearers, these species have been selectively bred throughout the world to produce a huge variety of colours, body shape and fin arrangement. Livebearers give birth to free swimming young, instead of egg laying like most other fishes. To achieve this, male livebearers have a modified anal fin called a gonopodium that is used to facilitate internal fertilisation of the female, so overall to care for livebearers, we need warm climate, balanced water and a good environment (tank) setup.

COOROY RSL is proud to welcome two new chefs to the bistro restaurant, who will be serving up top-quality food at the recently renovated venue. Only 18 months ago, Vaclav Dvorsky was the head chef of Wooden Spoon in Sydney, a finedining restaurant offering degustation menus and an array of top-end dishes. Now, the Cooroy RSL welcomes the top chef as the latest addition to their bistro restaurant alongside Shovaun Wilson. Vaclav can also add head chef of The Rocks Cafe, Circular Quay, Appetito, West Bank and Ripples at Chowder Bay to his impressive list of former gigs. The European-trained chef specialises in modern European cuisine including French and Italian - and since moving to Australia in 1998, has added modern Australian cuisine, Asian and Indian infusion cooking to his repertoire. Shovaun has been a chef for seven years, completing her apprenticeship at a cattle farm in Victoria. It was a sea change that brought Shovaun from Gympie to the Noosa Shire and she said she loves to cook “good, hardy food”. Vaclav and Shovaun bring a unique taste to the Cooroy RSL and will feature dishes such as sweet coconut tiger prawns on radish salad with kaffir lime leaf sauce, or the crispy skinned Atlantic salmon fillet served with a fen-

River proves very popular By JACK MANGROVE THE Noosa River has again come up with the goods! With yet another perfect weekend the Noosa River was again a focal point for anglers, up river we saw some nice school jew coming from the Lake Cooroibah area, some good sized flathead have been taken from the ski runs with soft plastics and deeper diving hard body lures claiming some nice fish. Along Gympie Terrace the kids have been having a great time catching bream and whiting using prawn, worms and yabbies for bait. The early morning tide will be perfect this week for focusing your energy on tailor and trevally in Woods Bay and Noosa Sound.

Surface lures and poppers will work a treat as these fish feed on the surface. Out at the river mouth Jew, trevally and tailor have taken a liking to live baits and fresh mullet while on the rocks luderick have been in good numbers with weed the most popular bait. Offshore the charters did a run up to Double Island with some quality reef fish hitting the decks, pearl perch, snapper and parrot where all on the menu. Another of the charter headed towards the Hards and scored venus tusk fish, squire, snapper, fusilier, coral bream, amberjack and frying pan snapper. Sunshine Reef has also been popular with a good array of quality pan sized reefies, snapper trout and sweetlip were all boated

through the week. The good old floater pilchard has been a popular method while the bottom bouncers have been fishing hard to the reef with large plastic and micro jigs. Live bait has been very prevalent so make sure you have your bait jigs ready to go, there’s nothing like fresh bait. On the beach, Northshore has seen a good run of tailor over the last few weeks, the section between Teewah and Double Island has been the strongest area. Good deep gutters close to shore with an incoming tide is perfect. Large bream, good sized dart and quality flatties have also been inhabiting the same area. So On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

By NICK CALDWELL LAST season Noosa Little Athletics produced three National Champions and several State Champions. This sporting excellence is a result of both the athletes’ efforts and dedication and the coaches' commitment and expertise. After a successful 2014/2015 season, Noosa Little Athletics is looking forward to the upcoming season. The sign-on day for the coming season is Sunday 23 August from 9am to 1pm at the Girraween Sports complex, Eenie Creek Road, Sunshine Beach. Many athletes come through the ranks from the earliest age groups and progress all the way to state and national competitions and their efforts are recognized at the annual presentation night. For many of the younger athletes it a very special night as age champions and

Christian Caldwell and Sebastian Hayes both competed at the regional championships and went home with a swag of awards after the Noosa Little Athletics presentation night. major awards winners are presented with trophies. One of the special age groups is the Under-9s as it is the first year athletes can attend the state championships if they qualify through the regional championships. Two athletes who experienced the joy this path-

way provides were Christian Caldwell and Sebastian Hayes. Both boys were also feeling very happy on the awards night as Sebastian managed to pick up the Coaches Award and Christian picked up the Most Improved Athlete Award and Age Champion. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Great result for Sunshine Beach comp By DEAN SMALLMAN LAST weekend the Sunshine Beach SLSC Nippers, Cadets, Masters and Open competitors, along with a huge support crew, headed south to the Gold Coast for the 2015 Australian Pool Rescue Championships. This three day event saw the best lifesavers in Australia demonstrate their lifesaving skills in a pool at the magnificent Gold Coast Aquatic Centre across a mix of disciplines, many of which for the first time viewer may look a little strange. The championships started and ended under blue skies with Sunshine Beach SLSC once again, after their fantastic result at the Queensland state championships two weeks earlier, coming out well ahead of many of the powerhouse clubs both within the state and across Australia. The fourth place result once again showed that when this great club puts their hearts, minds and muscle into something, great things do happen. Magnificent in team shirts and strong in voice, the Sunshine Crew were the most vocal of all teams and truly represented Surf Lifesaving in the most positive of fashions. With such great results and a sensational team dinner held on the Friday night this was a championship to remember. Special mention to the girls in the team with super coach

Eight-year-old Hawaiian Scarlett Schremmer will be back again in 2016. Picture: Ian Borland / Noosa Festival of Surfing.

Get on board for festival The Sunshine Beach SLSC Nippers, Cadets, Masters and Open competitors, along with a huge support crew headed south to the glitter strip that is the Gold Coast for the 2015 Australian Pool Rescue Championships. Jo Redwood and the feisty Natalie McMaster doing the club and coast proud with a host of gold medals. Club President Craig Law, was so ecstatic with the team’s overall performance and camaraderie that on the return trip home, he diverted the team bus to the cultural heart of SE Queensland, Yatala, for a championship ending award-winning pie or two from the famous Yatala Pies - now that’s a president that knows how to spoil his welldeserving athletes. This is the last major event before the endurance championships on the Gold Coast in late September, which promises to be another great event

as Sunshine relishes under super coaches Clint Robinson (OAM) and Max Pettigrove (Club Legend). The Nipper season also gets underway in late September and with SignOn day at the Noosa Aquatic centre on September 5 from 9am, the Junior Activities Committee is extremely busy ensuring that all families have the best possible experience in the 2015/16 season. For anyone wanting to find out more about Junior Activities at Sunshine SLSC come and see for yourself at the sign-on day and with no cap on Nipper numbers this season, this is going to be another season of fun and fanfare for the whole family.

THE 2015 Noosa Festival of Surfing attracted competitors from more nations than ever before, and 2016 is set to break new records. Entries have already been received from the UK, USA, Hawaii and New Zealand, as well as from around Australia, and more are rolling in daily across the newly extended array of age divisions. Connor Griffiths, son of the legendary British surfer-shaper, Chris ‘Guts’ Griffiths, will be joining us from the Welsh coast, the Schremmer family, Scarlett, Mason and Lola will be returning from the Hawaiian island of Oahu, along with multiple champion Honolua Blomfield, and Manawa Ruru will be representing New Zealand for the first time. With 14 countries represented in 2015, the Noosa Festival of Surfing is truly an international affair. But at its heart, the world’s largest surfing competition is still very much a local event. Long-time Noosan, Phil Jarratt, was at the helm of the

festival for most of its two-plus decades, passing the mantle to his daughters, Sam and Ellie after this year’s event. As almost lifelong residents, the core of the family-run Noosa Festival team recognises that without the generous support, enthusiasm and boundless stoke of the local community, the event would not exist. The unique geography and pristine coastline of Noosa makes it the perfect venue for the world’s premiere longboarding event, a Mecca for the very best exponents of the sport. The goodwill and backing of local and regional sponsors make this achievable, allowing the Noosa Festival of Surfing to continually grow and reach it’s silver anniversary, celebrating 25 years of Pure Stoke in 2016. As well as welcoming over 600 competitors and their families from across the planet, the Noosa Festival of Surfing embraces its home and the community of the Noosa Shire, eager to promote and

IN A couple of weeks September will be upon us and once again our thoughts will turn to our little friends the Noosa Seahorse Nippers. Commencing on Saturday 5 September, 9am till 10am, Steve Mawby of the Noosa Heads S.L.S.C, backed up by his team of qualified lifesavers, will be on Noosa’s Main beach to put the Seahorse Nippers through their program of beach games and water events. The Seahorse season is conducted every Saturday morning for the month of September. This team has a proud record of having conducted sic programs in three years. Let us also acknowledge that, not only have they conducted these programs but have also taken the time and effort to talk to visiting clubbies who are endeavoring to run similar programs at their home beaches and noosa.starcommunity.com.au

familiarise them with all aspects of the Noosa programs. Also they have travelled to clubs on the Gold Coast taking with them the equipment necessary to fully demonstrate their programs. One of the support team summed it up beautifully at the end of the last program when he said, “To see the smile on the face of these little kids makes it all worthwhile.” Once again, Dawn Fraser along with Jordan Mercer, Noosa Iron Woman will be the club patrons. This season they will be joined by Lachlan Lansdown, a young man who is fast making a name for himself as an endurance competitor. Any parents or family members wishing to enrol their young ones, are cordially invited to contact the Noosa Club on 5474 5688 ext. 2 and speak to Zoe and above all, parents please note membership of this great organisation is free. A major project that is gaining momentum is the drive to raise $20,000 to purchase a Smart Pup for 12-year-old Ziggy Laidlaw.

This young man has been a member of the Seahorse Nippers right from the start and is now in that stage in his life when the company and friendship of one of these incredible animals would be a massive step forward. And by the way, this young man is one of our foundation members. Well done champ. The season for the Noosa Nippers will start on Sunday 4 October and Nippers, parents and guardians must be signed up and financial prior to participating in any club activities. All memberships are completed on line and process can be started by going to club website. Pool proficiencies must be completed before the start of Nippers and these will be held at the Good Shepard Lutheran Pool on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September from 10.30am till 2pm both days. Mums and dads are reminded that essential gear for these tests consists of goggles, towel and togs. Nipper packs will also be available on the days at a cost of $30 and these will consist of a wet

proof bag, Noosa cap, pink highviz rashie and of course the Noosa Nipper T-shirt. Don’t forget that all adult members of the club must hold blue cards. Regarding this, the necessary forms are available at the club administration office or via the website and must be returned to club administration in person with original identification. Anyone requiring further information is invited to call the Noosa Club on the above number. Last weekend was yet another success story for the Sunshine Beach Club. Travelling to Southport to contest the Nation Pool Rescue Titles this small club finished in an incredible fifth place overall. Considering that there were clubs from all over Australia competing, this is indeed a great result. Three days of competition, 200 events; these were contested by members from the ranks of the Masters, Opens and Nippers. Once again a big effort from coach Jo Redwood and her support team. Well done to all.

preserve this unique locale, its businesses, its culture, its people and its environment. This year, the festival proudly celebrated Noosa’s establishment as a National Surfing Reserve and will continue to bring its support of the local region into future events. With thanks and appreciation for the wealth of generosity over previous years, the organisers are extending an invitation to local, regional and national businesses to join us in 2016 as sponsors of the 25 Annual Noosa Festival of Surfing. Patron’s Day at Coolum By ANNETTE ADSETT COOLUM Tennis Patron’s Day numbers are being finalised after an early sign on. The club is now hoping to have the final numbers soon to help with catering. All players are welcome. Unfortunately, there is a Junior Development Squad tournament at

Noosa, so some of our juniors will be playing there. Even though we are playing for trophies, all players of all standards are welcome to enjoy the day. It is an opportunity for players to mix socially while enjoying tennis. The Patron’s Day Tournament is on 30 August at 9 am. Play is in 25 minute sessions with a five minute

break. All players will play at least four matches. As the tournament is in the up down format, you will get to play with a variety of players. The cost is $10 a player and all are welcome. Please take note that there is no social tennis that morning and the courts will be full for most of the day. Coolum Travellers went to

Gheerulla with trepidation, as Gheerulla have had some great wins this season. However, Coolum won 45 -21 and this did not reflect the play. It was a close competition with some great tennis. Thanks to Joan, Gerda, Annette and Bev for making the trip up the range for a wonderful day of tennis. Next week, we start our second round, playing Nambour at Nambour.

We have had some communication problems with our email account. If you want to contact the club via email, please use our website www.tenniscoolum.com.au and follow the prompts for contacting us. Hopefully our problem will be sorted soon. If you have any inquiries, please contact our coach, Andrew Ash on 0421 391 505 or email him at coolum@ashtennis.com .

Andrew makes it three in a row premieres won though in convincing fashion only dropping the one set for the night giving Andrew Cornell his third season victory in a row. The autumn season at the Noosa Tennis club, saw one of our strongest competition in a while for both Wednesday and Thursday night fixtures. The night tennis season runs over 14 weeks of matches played all of which are played at the Noosa tennis complex. The field of 60 players competes in a team format and play one singles and two doubles in their night of tennis. In the Wednesday competition, at the end of 12 weeks of tennis there were only eight points separating the top two teams.

Clinic unites players THE Noosa Tigers AFL Special Needs clinic put on a fantastic demonstration last weekend at half time of the Noosa and Moreton Bay game, finishing with a draw. Coach Rob Purves has been running this clinic for eight weeks on a Wednesday afternoon teaching girls and boys of all ages and abilities the skills of AFL footy. “We decided that after a couple of practice matches at training, they were good enough to show off their skills and promote that it’s about ability and not disability,” he said. Each week there are new members joining as the word gets out of how successful the program has been. Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh said the feedback from parents and participants was very positive and praised the efforts of Rob on creating an encouraging environment for participants and mentors. Rob said players from Noosa Tigers have been attending each week to buddy-up with a child or young adult to encourage them to

Pirates too strong for Colts UNDER 13 Gold Pirates Junior Rugby League team have shown awesome team spirit to defeat the Coolum Colts 42-16 in their round 20 match. It was a whole team effort as the Gold team steamed to victory with, Floyde K earned three points for his efforts while Willaim B showed outstanding commitment on field with his defence while Jordy took one point for his efforts. The Under 11 Blue put in another determined effort to win themselves a skilled win at Beerwah. Faultless defence, teamwork, good decisions and stepping up when under pressure. The whole team displayed a “Player of the Match” effort and will take that confidence and determination into next week when they will play their Pirate Gold clubmates for a grand final spot. Under 11 Gold took on the might of Kawana White this week. Kawana bounced out of the blocks so quick that it wasn’t until the second half that Noosa managed to keep up with them. From the start Gold were up against it. Kawana came at them quickly and put on a few early tries that we weren’t able to claw back in the first half. The second half was a different story with Gold managing to get themselves into the pace of the match and pressing Kawana hard for the final 20 minutes. The Under 12 Gold came out and gave the spectators a really good game to watch, showing them they can play great footy when they play together and put their bodies on the line. Going down 24-10 the score board doesn’t do justice to how well they played showing great commitment in defence and attack across the whole team with two runaway tries being the difference. Three points goes to big Kade Grazotis for driving up the middle making good yards all day, two points to Heath Robinson for his usual tireless effort in attack and defence and one point to the entire team for giving a red-hot go right across the field. OTHER RESULTS:

Try time for the Under-9s. Under-7 White - All the boys worked hard keeping Nambour to two tries with desperate defence, especially near their own line. Only the carnival to go boys and footy will be finished for the year. You have all played so well all year and your parents and families have enjoyed every minute watching this year. Under-9 Blue -Today the boys were at home on a beautiful sunny day in Noosa. We played two games, the first game against Nambour and the second game against Kawana. The boys probably had their best day of footy all season, absolutely blitzing both teams. Encouragement awards today went to Lachlan Neville and Joshy Palmer. Man of the Match went to a very deserving Jett

Cannon. Under-10 Blue - The team played a very good game against Nambour. We have been beaten quite easily by Nambour in past games but not this time which is evidence to how much the team has improved. Good strong running by Ashton, Jake, Liam, Calieb, Jack and Arlo in the middle. Great creative play through Joel, Ivan, Danyal, Daniel, Jed and Jordan. Under-10 Yellow - This week our team played at home against Nambour. The game was a real physical encounter. Ryan Fox and Charlie Cook both played great games. Jordan made some big runs and Caleb Hart made a couple of big try saving tackles. Jed was active at half back and was well supported by Dylan. Under-14 Blue - Friday night foot-

ball wasn’t good for the boys. They struggled in the first half having only 13 players with no reserves. The final score was 36-14. Tries went to Chase McChesney (2) and Lachlan Ellings (1) with Jamie Gollagher converting 1. Man of the match went to Owain Ritson who made countless tackles. Special mention to Kye Hennessey and Toby Burton. Under -14 Gold - The 14As trekked up the Bruce Highway to Gympie this week for the penultimate round of the competition and came away with a convincing victory. Best players were the halves with captain Sean Rodger looking better in the six every week and Chance Wells showing it’s the size of the heart that counts.

The Under-9s had a great game.

Nail-biter in the local derby By JOE JURISEVIC THE Noosa Dolphin’s Under-7s played their local derby under lights at home while the remaining Noosa teams made the long drive to Caloundra and Witta on the weekend in this weekend’s round of Junior Rugby Games. Noosa Fins got home by just five points against their clubmates Noosa Reds in the Under-7s, playing in chilly conditions at Dolphin Oval on Friday night. It was standing room only as both teams refused to relent to the other’s constant pressure. With seconds left in the match, the Fins forced a crucial turnover and went coast to coast to seal a well-earned victory right on the final hooter. Cross code specialists Jake and Charlie were strong in attack as Darcy, Will, Jax and Sarena did the hard yards up the middle. Conor, Harry and Zac worked hard all night and Noah continues to impress as a defender. Quinn, Lachie and James were strong on debut. Domino’s Pizza Player Of The Match - Jake Clark. Meanwhile the Under-11 Noosa Fins defeated Matthew Flinders 15-12 in a thriller of their own. With the Fins down12-0 in this bruising match, they showed their true character and class to fight their way back. Flinders were determined in defence and held up the Fins just metres out several times. Ultimately, Noosa ended up dominating possession and territory with well worked phases that wore Flinders down to create their scoring opportunities and eventually take the match.Tries: Billy Bougoure, Lochie Dudgeon, Sabyr Kime. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match - James Gelling. Meanwhile in the Under-15s, another thriller saw Brothers defeat Noosa 17-15. It was the first loss for the season for the Noosa Under-15s. A slow start saw Brothers score first, however little separated the two teams throughout as represented by the score. Try scorers Noah Blake, Sameet Raju and Alex Moses. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match - Joel Cavell.

Third time luckiest By BRIAN STOCKWELL NOOSA Premier junior side, the Under-17 first-division team, has secured a Sunshine Coast Football finals berth with their win over Caloundra on Saturday. It’s not a new thing for the boys, many of whom have played finals the past two years in the Under-14 and 15 age groups. Currently sitting third the boys will need to beat Nambour Yandina United next week to maintain that spot. The Under-14 first-division side is also finals bound for the third time in a row with an emphatic 6-1 win over Caboolture. Grand-

finalists in the Under-12s and Under-13s, the team is playing some great attacking football under the guidance of coach Corey Lovewell. Lovewell, no doubt buoyed by the boys’ performance, played one of his best games of the season later in the evening when he lined up in the starting side of the Premier Men. Playing a key role in the midfield, Lovewell found himself in the middle of a torrid encounter with Caboolture who had an outside chance of getting into the top four if they won. A quick-thinking Paul Arnison slotted a left-footed gem into the far corner of the net to give Noosa the lead in the 38th minute. Despite a number of chances for both sides in the sec-

ond half that’s how the game ended. The win takes Noosa to 45 points, only two behind ladder leaders Woombye, and means they have not been beaten at home in any regular season game this year. With a bye to finish the season Noosa hasn’t got the opportunity to improve on that. With one of the closest leader boards in many years, a win to Kawana next week over Buderim would leap-frog them above Noosa. Buderim however, will be determined as they need to win to keep the fast finishing Maroochydore out of the finals with only two points separating fourth and fifth.

St Kilda's premiership player Barry Breen talked about that final dramatic point of the 1966 grand final at the 8 August President's Lunch.

MC Julian Pitts, guest speaker Mike Sheahan and Noosa Tigers President Scott McKenzie at the 4 July President's Lunch.

Eagles finish on Dining with AFL greats is a winner a Hurricane high note By PETA HOLMES NOOSA Eagles Under-7 Gold were determined to finish their soccer season on a winning note - finishing the year with a 2-0 win over the Stella Hurricanes. Golden Girls Bella Hillegers and Montannah Ward scored a goal each. Player of the match went to Montannah Ward for awesome attack. Eagles Under-10 played against Bli Bli Crusaders at Parklakes Bli Bli with Noosa going down 8-0. Player of the week was Jude Youens for his outstanding support. Noosa Gold Under-9s played the Bli Bli Wizards. Unfortunately Noosa lost 2-0, despite putting in their best game this season. All the players were fantastic in defence and attack with many shots at goal. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

IT WASN'T just on-field where the Noosa AFL Tigers showed good form, their list of guest speakers for the President’s Lunch was just as impressive. Held every home game at the Weyba Road grounds, the President’s Lunch is a great way to hear from some of the code’s greats while enjoying a delicious meal provided by the

Noosa Heads Surf Club restaurant. This year the lucky lunch guests were treated to the likes of former St Kilda and Carlton great Val Perovic, former Essendon champion Scott Lucas, plus one of Richmond’s all-time greats, Michael Roach. Brownlow medallist, captain and premier-

ship player for Geelong, Paul Couch, was also among the guest speakers, while renowned sports journalist and host of On The Couch, Mike Sheahan, had the crowd intrigued. St Kilda's 1966 premiership player Barry Breen and leading TV sports specialist Drew Morphett rounded out the guest speakers for the 2015 season.

Noosa go straight into grand final By RICHARD MURRIHY THE Noosa 15s have marched straight into the softball grand final on 29 August with a tough win over the Cavs at the weekend. The finals started this week and the 15s started the day off. The first innings saw a batting line-up change from previous weeks and still we had a similar start - no runs in the first dig. Good fielding and pitching saw

the Cavs held to zero as well. The second dig saw Noosa get two runs home while the Cavs got one home to see Noosa up twoone after two innings. The third saw Noosa awaken, with safe hits to Dylan, Shinai and Brayden while Charles got a two bagger. These were topped off with another home run to Riley to take it to six runs in the third, while in the field two errors and a muffed fly

allowed Cavs to take advantage and run five runs in. It was 8-6 to Noosa with six and a half minutes to go - just enough time to get one more innings and what an innings it was. Josh and Jacob dropped bunts, Shinai hit another two bagger and Brayden scored a safe hit to get Noosa 10 runs in the fourth while restricting the Cavs to three runs to take the game 18-9. The rest of the club wasn’t so

lucky. The 17 blacks went down to Cavs 8- 0 and now have a preliminary final this Saturday. The 17 Whites lost to Comets and will also play the preliminary final this week. As will the Noosa Men’s team, which lost by two runs. The upside of these results mean that Noosa doesn’t have to be at Caboolture at 7.30 in the morning - playing the later 8.30 slots.
