■ Council advised to reject $6m demand

■ State ‘wants $1.5m a year for new trust’

Claws out for cash strings is the revelation that a State Government-appointed trust taking over management of the stadium comes with a $1.5 million annual price tag attached. Councillors are divided over the Cats’ demand for $6 million, with many ratepayers believing the money could be better-spent

By PAUL MILLAR WARY councillors will defy inhouse recommendations if they agree to splurge $6 million on further upgrades to Simonds Stadium . Another major sticking point in any loosening of council purse

elsewhere with others arguing the city needs a world-class stadium to attract visitors. Sources told the Independent that City Hall officers had prepared a report advising councillors against providing the money. Councillor Eddy Kontelj, who holds council’s finance

portfoliol, admitted to “nervousness“ about committing such a large sum. The ongoing surcharge of $1.5 million a year for the trust also troubled him. “The State Government is installing a trust to take over the ownership and running of the

stadium and I don’t believe that the residents of Geelong should be contributing to the ongoing operating costs. I just don’t think they should be paying $1.5 million annually,“ Cr Kontelj said. Continued page 4

Double Take

We should all have a relatively good idea of the pain caused by a lack of memory on our devices. Especially those of us that are snap happy. Back in the day, it used to be deleting your third cousin’s pager number in your phone to make room for that cutie you met at your second cousin’s birthday party. But now, as phones increase in power and as their cameras increase in resolution, it’s the stored user data that tends to be the memory culprit.

SOME might have detected the hypocricy in Ford’s tanty this week about the Abbott Government’s plan for private auto purchases. The Blue Oval was mighty unimpressed with the threat that individual Aussies might soon be able to import their own own cars from overseas. What? The little guy able to access a better deal overseas? Ourtrageous! But that’s Ford, the same company that will stop making cars in Australia next year - and import the lot. What’s good for the goose... LIBERAL Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson (pictured) was among a swag of federal government MPs who could have lost their seats had an election been held on Saturday. As many as 36 seats Liberal or National Party MPs would have fallen on the back of a uniform 7.5 per cent swing, according to the latest Fairfax-Ipsos poll. The 36 seats represent 15 more than the 21 Labor would need to form government. Luckily for Ms Henderson, the poll that counts is

still more than a year away. MS Henderson was also on the wrong end of a little ire over irony this week. A number of Indy readers expressed frustration with the forum she had arranged with state counterpart Andrew Katos to discuss recent changes to public transport in Geelong. The opportunity to vent was welcomed but, as many pointed out, public transport users would obviously struggle to attend the event at far-flung Grovedale on a Tuesday night without adequate public transport. Some would-be attendees suggested a second forum on the other side of town so everyone could have a say. But at least the location doesn’t inconvenience the two MPs - it’s in both their electorates and within a short drive of their homes. JOGGERS and walkers on their early morning exercise regimes are on a collision course with weightswinging, keep-fit junkies on the footpaths of Eastern Beach. The popular waterfront venue has been the scene of several close calls, with joggers forced into body swerves to avoid the kettle-drum enthusiasts. It’s an issue likely to be brought to the attention of council, with local exercise clubs lobbying for a code of conduct for the fitness operators.

POLICE believe they have solved the mystery of a silver booty discovered on a Torquay beach this week. A Victoria Police spokesman said silver ingots and coins were handed in after a walker discovered them on Monday. “A woman found the bag of ingots and coins at Point Danger about 9.50am and took it to the local police station, he said. “Police are making a number of inquiries in relation to the lo-

cated silver, which is believed to be valued at around $10,000. Collectors regularly find plenty of gold rings, coins and watches on local beaches with metal detectors. But the collection of solid ingots had police scratching their heads. A breakthrough came when a Melbourne couple provided investigators with clues to the owners of the silver while simultaneously resolving a missing-person case. The western suburbs family

was concerned their 28-year-old son had gone missing. They were also aware he initially had custody the ingots, which were inside a sports bag. The puzzle came together when police in a squad car spotted the missing man as he wandered along the Great Ocean Road between Anglesea and Torquay. Nobody has been charged over the silver. The incident was also unlikely to end in a case of finders-keepers for the honest local who discovered the misplaced treasure.

City ‘squeezing kinder group out of premises’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S council is squeezing not-for-profit kindergartens out of leased buildings and installing its own kinders instead, according to Geelong Kindergarten Association (GKA). Managing director Tina Martin said the majority of the association’s kinders operated from City of Greater Geelong (CoGG) buildings. “These previously long-term agreements are currently being replaced by 12-month leases,” Ms Martin said. “The past year has seen lease agreements at Barwon Heads Kindergarten and Norlane North Shore Kindergarten not being renewed, resulting in GKA being unable to provide kin-

dergarten programs at these locations. “At the same time CoGG has opened new integrated hubs in both areas. “CoGG’s municipal children’s services infrastructure plan 2013-2030 identifies a number of recommendations pertaining to council-owned buildings and facilities accommodating children’s services, including the establishment of more integrated hubs. “If implemented, these recommendations are expected to impact on existing GKA kindergartens.” GKA delivers early-childhood education programs in 24 kindergartens across the City for about 1100 children in four-year-old programs and 400 in three-year-old kinder.

A Drumcondra parent who also contacted the Independent about the issue was concerned about the City forcing GKA to reduce its services. “Here we have a local government authority using ratepayer’s monies to systematically create monopolies in the early-childhood environment,” the parent wrote. GKA was formed in 1994 following changes in government funding and local council amalgamations. Voluntary committees of management had found financial management and employment of staff increasingly difficult, with GKA taking over both responsibilities. But council’s community development portfolio holder, Kylie Fisher, said services would be unaffected.

“The kinders we are replacing are old facilities that need renewal. They are being replaced with family hubs with a co-located range of early childhood services,” Cr Fisher said. “We’re updating and upgrading kinder services. In fact, communities will gain extra early childhood services in the integrated hubs. “The current kindergarten services can’t offer playgroups or speech therapy, which can be offered through an integrated centre.” Cr Fisher said GKA would continue to offer services at stand-alone kinders where no integrated centre was required. “GKA still have a function in that space, even though it will be at a reduced number,” she said.

should be a delay in making a decision. We need to give Geelong Football Club direction about the funding for the stadium. “Council appreciates that this is a world-class facility, it attracts tourism, it’s an economic driver and attracts social engagement and supports the biggest game in the country and as such I support council engaging in funding for the next development.

Councillors were considering a variety of options to provide the funding, Cr Kontelj said. The club wants the money for an $89 million stage-four redevelopment of the stadium. The Andrews Government has pledged $70 million, its predecessor committed $5 million and the AFL has committed $5 million. Councillors are likely to vote on the funding next week.

Costs killer for residents body A COMMUNITY association will fold if it has to pay costs for a lost appeal against a service station planned for Drysdale, a member has confirmed. The Independent revealed last week that Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association had lost its bid to void the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) costs order. The association was ordered to pay legal costs of $5500 by December to Caltex franchisee Milemaker Petroleum. Milemaker, which had asked VCAT for $26,000 in legal costs, plans to build a service station at the junction of Jetty Rd and High St. Community association committee member Patrick Hughes said the group would have to cease operating because it would be unable to pay the costs. “We only get a couple of hundred dollars a year from member subscriptions, Mr Hughes said.

COSTS: Patrick Hughes near the site of the proposed service station. “We’ll have to put all our efforts into this between now and 7 December when it’s due and it means all our other community activities will come to a halt. “If we can’t really spend our time on community efforts there’s no real incentive for people to join. Mr Hughes said the association had sought clarification from VCAT on whether it was protocol to contact Milemaker directly with a request for the company to

write off the $5500 as a gesture of goodwill to the community. The association could still face legal consequences from the VCAT decision even if it did stop operating, he said. “We don’t know whether the bailiff or the sheriff will come after us if we don’t pay. The association has the support of local federal MPs Richard Marles and Sarah Henderson, state Member for Bellarine and Environment Minister Lisa Neville, councillor Rod Macdonald and other community groups. Ms Neville wrote to VCAT with a warning that any costs order against the group “would act as a serious disincentive for any like community organisation involving itself in a local planning matter, to the possible detriment of the community and the planning outcome. An independent online petition gathered 349 signatures in support of the group.

Innovative Geelong strategy rolling out across state

Bottlo bans slash booze crime By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

MURPHY’S LAW: Sergeant Tim Bennett and Senior Constable Sarah Goette with strategy participant Chris Schepers, manager of Dan Murphy’s Bellarine Village. 142887 Picture: REG RYAN

AN INNOVATIVE Geelong police operation targeting bottle shop thieves has reduced alcohol-related crime across the city, according to coordinators. Geelong Liquor Licencing Unit’s Relapse Strategy program is now attracting interest from other police service areas across the state. The initiative allows police to target and ban recidivist alcohol thieves from entering liquor stores for up to 12 months. The unit’s Senior Constable Sarah Goette said 60 alcohol outlets had signed up to the Relapse Strategy, formerly the Geelong Packaged Liquor Accord. “The program has been named the Relapse Strategy because we want to try and help people from relapsing back into their old habits, which in this case is theft of alcohol and alcohol addiction,” Sen Const Goette said. “As part of this strategy our main aim is to reduce recidivist offenders. “People identified as committing offences including theft from outlets in the packaged liquor accord face being issued with a banning notice prohibiting them from re-entering any store in the accord for 12 months. “If they attempt to or enter these stores they may be fined or ultimately sent to court. An infringement notice for contravening a banning notice is currently $303.” Sen Const Goette said the strategy offered support and referrals to people with alcoholism or alcohol dependence to help educate and treat them. “Police recognise that it’s not just about enforcing the law but also understanding the underlying problems and working together with other agencies to provide support to these offenders,” she said. “We work closely with retail outlets to identify offenders, utilising CCTV footage as well as staff knowledge of recidivist offenders and persons currently on the banning list.” Sen Const Goette said all the outlets had signed an agreement to work together with licencing police to maintain ethical conduct and responsible service, sale and consumption of alcohol. “We want to monitor and discourage anti-social behaviour in and around licenced premises and public spaces,” she said.

Anglesea work detail revealed ALCOA has “encouraging” plans for rehabilitating its Anglesea coal mine and power station site, according to Victoria’s peak environmental group. A “key document” secured with Freedom of Information laws showed the company “seems to be taking their closure responsibilities seriously”, said Environment Victoria’s Nicholas Aberle. Alcoa has slated a $55 million clean-up of the site after operations cease at the end of the month, costing over 80 jobs. The facility previously supplied electricity to Alcoa’s aluminium processing plant at Pt Henry but became redundant after the company stopped manu-

facturing in Geelong. Alcoa was then unable to find a buyer for the power station. Anglesea residents have expressed concerns about the future of the site, including fears it could become a coal seam fire risk. Alcoa has posted on its website details of the rehabilitation project. Mr Aberle said the documents released under FoI demonstrated “the importance of successfully restoring the Anglesea site”. “Alcoa seems to be taking their closure responsibilities seriously, which is encouraging, and there are details in their work plan that seem to be largely absent from corresponding documents for the Latrobe Valley mines.”

Mr Aberle said transparency of the rehabilitation works was essential given public consultation about the future of the site was about to begin. “Alcoa has recognised that they need to have criteria to determine the success of their rehabilitation and closure activities but the current work plan has not established what these criteria are. A key part of the community consultation should be asking residents what their criteria for success are. “Without clear criteria for success on mine rehabilitation and site closure there is no accountability.”

Minister attacks:

Joeys boy takes Aussie cafe style to Dubai By PAUL MILLAR DUBAI might not be everybody’s cup of tea but a Geelong man is creating a mini empire with a grounding in coffee. Former Saint Joseph’s student Tom Arnel is flourishing in the stifling heat of the UAE, operating three eateries and planning to open seven bar-restaurants over the next 18 months. After leaving St Joseph’s in 2003 he gave up any ideas of a career in accounting, starting as an apprentice chef at Lorne. Since then he has worked in the world’s top eateries, massively expanding the operations of others until realising the big money he was making them could be made for himself. In November 2013, with business partner Sergio Lopez, he opened a classy cafe but not in any trendy precinct. The pair opted for an industrial area in the Middle East. “It was a first for Dubai; very radical Australian-style cafe culture,“ Mr Arnel said. “We focused on having good staff, many of them Australian. It was packed every day with every nationality, it was what was needed.” “We made enough money to open the Sum of Us, a 230-seater and it’s been just as successful.” Lamingtons and Pavlovas were always on the menu, he said, while the cafes always had an adventurous twist in the drinks department. “We introduced a Vegemite milk-shake. Funnily enough, the locals really like it,” Mr Arnel said.

‘Forum on transport just stunt’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A FORUM on Geelong’s public transport woes is a “hypocritical stunt” by two Liberal MPs, according to a state minister. The Independent reported last week that state South Barwon MP Andrew Katos and federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson had called the forum after a public outcry over timetable changes. “The hypocrisy of this stunt by the Victorian and federal Liberals is astounding,” said a spokesperson for Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan. “The Victorian Liberals ignored regional public transport for four years while in government and are supported by the federal Liberals, who refuse to invest in urban rail. “Not only did the former Victorian Liberal Government not fund any major public transport infrastructure project, they also didn’t order a single V/ Line carriage for two years and had a secret plan to sack 100 V/Line staff. “The Andrews Labor Government has saved those jobs, delivered 200 extra train services to Geelong every week and ordered 21 extra V/Line carriages to carry hundreds of extra passengers on the Geelong line and across the regional train network. “Instead of spouting platitudes to

public transport users, Sarah Henderson and the federal Liberal government need to end ideological opposition to public transport and invest in Victorian rail.“ Ms Henderson told the Independent last week the new Regional Rail Link was failing to live up to expectations. She said results since the jointly funded federal/state project began in June had been unsatisfactory, with overcrowded trains and unreliable timetables. Mr Katos said changes to bus routes and timetables had particularly impacted on the elderly and students. “We want people to be constructive and offer solutions to fix the problems,” he said. “This is not simply an exercise in bashing the government. We’re looking to be as constructive as possible.” “As an opposition we are also thinking about future policy and will take note of all the feedback we are getting.” Mr Katos said the high level of interest in the forum had prompted him to speak with rural and regional transport shadow parliamentary secretary Simon Ramsay about the potential for a second event in Geelong. The forum will be at Burdoo Reserve, Grovedale, from 7pm Tuesday.

1000 saved from food relief shortage in Geelong

Funding lifeline to aid hungry By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN EMERGENCY funding grant will ensure more than 1000 Geelong residents continue to receive crisis food support, UnitingCare Geelong has announced. The agency’s chief, Des Younghusband, said emergency funding was needed after the Federal Government slashed $271 million from social service grants. “Vital emergency food support will continue at UnitingCare’s Geelong crisis support service after the agency was given an $80,000 cash injection from fundraising group Share,” he said. “The money will be used to assist around 1000 Geelong residents, particularly those living in the southern and eastern suburbs, including women and children who don’t have money to buy food and pay for utilities. “The number of food vouchers and fruit and vegetables given to disadvantaged people living in Geelong would be dramatically scaled back if Share didn’t agree to give the agency a grant.” Mr Younghusband said reduced funding, combined with a rising number of people needing assistance, meant the service was more important than ever. “We’re committed to helping any Geelong resident that walks through our doors and give them a sense of hope that there are places they can turn to. “The money from Share helps us to reach out to more people who experience financial hardship. “With the cost of living pushing families to the brink, we’re committed to continuing the established and reputable service.” Geelong’s unemployment rate of 6.2 per cent had left more people suffering from food vulnerability with reports students at schools continually went without breakfast, Mr Younghusband said. “For Geelong families, they’re finding that keeping up with utilities, unexpected medical bills, and schooling costs are placing pressure on the family budget. “We’re seeing more people being vulnerable and facing housing shortages because they’re unable to afford essentials like food and clothing.” Share operations and development director Angela Goodwin said the organisation had pledged just

‘Ark’ stocks up on supplies Buckets&Bouquets A LAND-based ark near Little River is helping threatened native animals survive and thrive. The predator-free Mt Rothwell Biodiversity Centre celebrated the birth of a batch of quoll joeys in recent weeks before supplying eight barred bandicoots for release into the wild near Phillip Island last weekend. Centre officer Jacqui Young said the first “truly wild release” of bandicoots into an unfenced environment could turn Churchill Island into another ark for threatened species. Recent surveys found 1150 bandicoots at the Mt Rothwell centre, three times as many as expected, she said. Mt Rothwell was also now home to over 100 of the critically endangered quolls in the largest self-sustaining population outside Tasmania. Ms Young said the centre’s breeding program supplied threatened species to other environmental projects as well. Mt Rothwell had managed to fence

In addition to exclusion fencing, we’re trialling different methods of rabbit control, including the release of some larger spot-tailed quoll males. “We can tell from the scat that one particular male is very efficient and almost exclusively targets rabbits.”

Take care with asthma - mum courses so I could look after my kids but the worst thing about asthma is the uncertainty; we just don’t know when the next attack will come,” Ms Calvert said. “Even with all my first-aid education I still felt completely helpless that night when my little boy couldn’t breathe. I hope I never have to go through the same horrible situation again. “That first time it happened my instinct kicked in but in the following days the reality of the situation became apparent.” Ms Calvert said she wanted to get involved in the campaign to help others. “Everybody in the family is involved in it. It doesn’t just affect Jensen, it affects me, his father and his siblings ... we all have to be up-to-date on it.” The e-book will be available to download on the Asthma Australia website from 1 September.

IT’S EVERY mother’s nightmare: watching her child struggling for breath from a sudden and unexpected asthma attack. Kezia Calvert felt almost helpless the first time the disease struck five-year-old son Jensen, shattering what should have been a pleasant Sunday morning at their Moriac home. Although fearful, Ms Calvert had enough initiative to call for an ambulance. “It was severe and once I established it wasn’t a spider bite I called the ambulance. They arrived quickly but his oxygen levels were very low,” she said. “I realised later that if I had not made that call he would not be here.” The mother of three was given a quick education in the debilitating illness. Ms Calvert then made sure she was up to pace with the

symptoms, the warning signs and how to cope with the disease. “Being able to have a constant referral point and medical professionals to fall back on has been re-assuring,” she said. Ms Calvert has lent her support to an Asthma Australia campaign to raise the awareness of the impact the disease has on the carers and families of sufferers. The You Care We Care will coincide with National Asthma Week, starting at the beginning of next month. As part of the campaign all state and federal politicians will receive an e-book, challenging them to provide support for people with asthma and their families. One in 10 Australians has asthma, which kills at least one Australian daily. “Even before Jensen was diagnosed I took pediatric first-aid

Letters None of your business PASTOR Frank Lowry (Letters, 14 August) is on the wrong side of history because he lacks generosity of spirit. For at least the past 300 years western civil society has moved to untangle itself from the often-cruel restrictions and abuse of the established Christian churches toward a more-tolerant secular society. Recently secular society has removed from Christian churches the right to protect and judge their own priesthood regarding paedophilia. In recent decades citizens have been conducting their own marriages and reciting their own words without a priest in sight. The same goes for funerals, which have become so much more warm celebrations than bleak journeys toward the judgement to come. No one is asking the church to conduct a marriage ceremony against its beliefs or forcing change where it is unwanted. Supporters of same-sex marriage are saying to their elected representatives that they want the state to recognise their right to marry. This issue is simply none of the churches’ business. Cats shun school kids GEELONG hosted a national schools Aussie Rules championship from 19 to 25 July. Six states and two territories each fielded four teams of 22 players, boys and girls. Thousands of visitors, including family members, spent at least a week in our city, boosting its economy. Some made a pilgrimage to the MCG and Etihad Stadium for guided tours. Unfortunately, Geelong Football Club did not give them the same reception. The championships’ organising committee engaged a photographer from the Mornington Peninsula to take photos of the teams at Simmonds Stadium, with the Cats claws stand behind them, but they were told they could not get on the playing surface. Consequently, the photographer had to superimpose the teams onto a photo of the stand so the kids and their parents had a memento of their visit to Geelong. Four days later Cats chief Brian Cook pressured Geelong’s council for $6 million of ratepayers’ money to build a new stand. Who owns this venue? However, the local football fraternity accommodated the championships, with a few clubs opening

My first experience was that the bus was still late, drivers were still unable to meet their timetables and bus stops were sorely missing or bypassed. Some bus drivers now loathe going to work due to constant customer complaints. The changes seem a manifest failure, so the forum is welcome, except for the fact it’s in Grovedale where some might be unable to attend, especially if public transport users. Perhaps another morecentral forum should follow at a time and venue accessible to bus users. I have asked Mr Katos and Ms Henderson to call for another such forum. I also asked

BUSSED A MOVE: Changes to Geelong’s public transport system have angered users. them to challenge Labor MPs to attend the Grovedale event to face aggrieved public transport users. Local councils alliance body G21 also had a big hand in this debacle, so perhaps representatives should also attend. If the new public transport regime is no improvement then perhaps it might have to be redone, this time in full consultation with users. And if unelected, self-appointed planning bodies like G21 cannot get it right first time then perhaps they should have no role at all. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West I READ with interest the story on page three of last week’s Independent about the forum on

their rooms and volunteers preparing the oval and supplying food and drink. Appreciation was shown in the visitors’ many complimentary comments. Some ex-AFL footballers attended, even Brownlow medallist Gavin Wanganeen. I congratulate the organising committee and voluntary coaches, trainers and umpires for the fantastic competition. Local market cooling A RECENTLY refurbished Belmont property has

bus and train changes. From the point of view of an elderly person with mobility problems, the bus changes have been very expensive. Before the changes I had a two-minute walk to catch the 10.20am bus to attend 11.45am meetings at the Geelong hospital. Now I have to leave at 9.40am for a 10-minute walk to the nearest bus stop to catch the 9.55am bus - and this is from Newcomb! Why do I have to leave so early? The buses now run every 40 minutes off-peak instead of every 30 minutes. Also, I cannot use the bus when it’s raining because I can’t hold an umbrella and push a walker for 10 minutes. I have had to pay for taxis to attend the hospital for pacemaker checks and the monthly meetings and to go shopping, which is stretching my budget to the maximum. A forum in Grovedale is a great idea but how do people attend at 7pm without buses? Yvonne Sardeson Newcomb

failed to sell at a second auction. The asking price reflected recent improvements made by the owner. The market is definitely cooling despite a report that prices for residential properties have increased significantly in some suburbs over the past 12 months, including Belmont. This is good news for prospective buyers but bad news for many would-be vendors because there doesn’t appear to be much, if any, Chinese money in Geelong to prop up prices. Michael J Gamble Belmont

Atmospheric hamster AUSTRALIAN Academy of Science’s call for Australia to cut its CO2 emissions to zero by 2050 was an overreaction. Do such august bodies understand basic facts regarding CO2? It’s presented as the major greenhouse gas, which is actually water vapour. Water is 96.5 per cent of greenhouse gases, CO2 is about three per cent, 96.5 per cent of which is naturally occurring. It’s false to say mankind’s tiny 3.5 per cent of C02 greenhouse gas concentration has the most significant impact on climate change. Water vapour is also 27 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2, so it equals 2605 units of greenhouse gas effect compared to CO2’s tiny 2.7 units. It’s like pointing to a tiny hamster in a corner and saying it’s causing “dangerous global warming” while ignoring the elephant in the room. A royal commission should immediately be called to test the theory that CO2 causes global warming before we sign away our prosperous future at Paris. Alan Barron Grovedale

Oh Christmas turkey OH CHRISTMAS tree, oh Christmas tree, An icon of Sir Spendalot’s folly. What next for our $1 million decoration, Now devoid of its Corio Bay location? Perhaps afloat at Kardinia Pool, Striped blue and white for fans to drool, Or Romanesque at flooded Simonds Stadium, Then drain in winter for return to GFC’s coliseum. Peasants, remember when rates fall due, Whose casting vote brought this tree to you, Then beating of chests and standing aghast, You’ll ask, ‘When will this coffer-draining be past?’ Rumbles from the bigger kingdom up the highway, The hint of a possible end to ‘doing it my way’. Awards ‘buzz’ LARA will unveil the winners of the town’s first business awards next week. More than 20 local traders have been nominated for the inaugural Lara District Business Awards since entries opened in June and closed last month. The awards, an initiative of the town’s chamber of commerce and Lara District Community Bendigo Bank, will be presented on Wednesday night. The awards were timed to coincide with Victoria’s annual Small Business Festival, which runs throughout August. The chamber and bank branch have given the awards significant

points of difference to open up entry to as many businesses as possible. The program does not require long written submissions or entry fees, unlike some other awards. Chamber president Natalie Candy said the initiative had created a lot of excitement around Lara. “I have been asked many times over the past few weeks when the winner is going to be announced, it is great to see the buzz around the town about these awards” Bank branch manager Damien Foster was thrilled with the response to the call for entries in the Independent, which is

sponsoring the awards. “Twenty-two businesses have been nominated by the community. It’s such an overwhelming response that supports the great community we live in.” Tony Galpin, the Independent’s managing editor, said the awards demonstrated the community spirit of Lara. “It’s great to see locals wanting to acknowledge businesses providing great goods and services while also supporting the community in return,” he said. Next week’s Independent will provide a full report on the awards presentation.

UNLIKE Paris Hilton, Rob Mills is not famous just for being famous. He’s had to work at it, unlike the US hotel heiress with whom he famously had a brief fling. Mills scanned the scene in Geelong this week in preparation for his cabaret show, which will take the audience through an emotional yet humours look at his life. “It’s a musical journey about a sheltered boy from Melbourne who originally wanted to be a Dermott Brereton but turned out to be a bit more like John Farnham,” Mills told the Independent. Easy-going but serious about his music, the Victorian said he would run through a series of anecdotes of his life, laced with show tunes from musicals in which he had performed, including Wicked. “It’s also about finding my own voice after coming from a cover band,” he says. Mills will always carry the Hilton saga as baggage but the actor and musician is a showman in his own right. That’s why the show, called Rob Mills, is surprisingly good, according to theatre-goers who have been in the audience. The one-time reality television contestant said it was time to forget about old-style cabaret with highkicking dancers. “Cabaret is not a dirty word. This is one-man theatre with music telling a good story,” he said. “It’s half stand-up and half musi-

FIRST CAST: Rose Musselwhite, Gracie Roger, Catherine Blenhassett, Lauren Anne Crute and Sandy Whittem star in the new Geelong production of Pride and Prejudice.

Pride in debut By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A NEW Geelong theatre company has innovatively adapted classic Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice. Skin Of Our Teeth will stage its production at Geelong High School’s Shenton Theatre until 29 August. The deliciously witty comedy of manners, love, passion and the perils of courtship kept moving along smartly, said director Christine Davey said. “I adore the book and, while there are adaptations around, I felt for this production at Shenton we needed to do our own. “There’s so much packed into the book revolving around these wonderfully spirited and indepen-

dent women. “We wanted to be careful to do justice to the story and the characters while keeping the pace moving along.” Davey explained that the production had taken an innovative approach, including extensive use of images instead of just relying on sets, to retain the focus on the performance. Skin Of Our Teeth was a recent addition to the wealth of Geelong theatre companies, with the mantra of doing things “just a little bit differently”, she said. “We like to do a season of original works where new and emerging playwrights can have their work put on.” The company plans to present

Book of Love next March, featuring four short plays with the theme of love. “We’ve called for submissions for those and we’re getting interest from around the globe,” Davey said. “We’re dedicated to presenting exciting, egalitarian and fabulous theatre, whether it be original works, classics, adaptations or something just that teensy bit out of the box.” With a wealth of experience as a writer producer and director, Davey said she was always on the lookout for new additions to the Skin Of Our Teeth family. The theatre company had already won a swag of awards at one-act play festivals, she said.

Tim warms up ‘gutsy’ festival ENVIRONMENTALIST and author Professor Tim Flannery will open a national non-fiction festival in Geelong next month. Prof Flannery will give a keynote address at the opening of the second annual Word For Word Festival on 10 September. The address will be based on his latest book, Atmosphere of Hope, a follow up to his bestselling The Weather Makers: How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth. The largest national event to showcase all forms of non-fiction writing, Word For Word will be at Deakin University’s Waterfront campus from 11 to 13 September. Ideas, discussion and debate will flow across the three days, with more than 70 guest speakers including playwright Hannie Rayson, award-winning journalist Latika Bourke, archaeologist Adam Ford, model Nicky Buckley and television legend Mal Leyland. Word For Word creative producer Maryanne Vagg said this year’s “gutsy” program would not shy away from exploring big issues and tough topics. Vagg said the packed program would once again pose a dilemma for those attending. “My favourite feedback from last year was that it was too hard

A powerful digital story exhibition, Home to Home, will be one of two free events as part of the festival. “Home to Home will be very moving,” Vagg said.

“It tells 22 powerful stories of a hidden part of our society young people with a disability living in nursing homes because they have nowhere else to go.” Anyone wanting to rub shoulders with a favourite author or presenter can attend a special BackStory Salon Event on 12 September. A NEW barber shop within Grovedale Hair Room is winning over local men with its luxurious traditional service. Operating as a separate section to the hairdressing salon, the barber shop offers men their own space away from the hustle and bustle of the busy salon area. Talented duo Tyler and Fraser have completed extensive training to provide everything from short back and sides to bald fades and straight razor shaves. Both young barbers are passionate about styling and the service they offer to their discerning clientele. “Everyone around town is really excited about the new barber shop - it’s something a bit different - and the customers have been really satisfied,” Tyler said. Tyler and Fraser recommend the luxury service of straight razor shaves as a great way to share some special boys’ time before events like wedding days. Basic trims are still available in the salon but the new barber shop offers a special experience for men seeking a hairdressing experience out of the ordinary. All barber haircuts include a shampoo and a straight razor finish, while Thursday-night customers can also enjoy a complementary beer or cider.

Crystal clear hearing here A BLOCKED ear can be a really simple reason for not hearing well according to specialist Ear Nurse Mardi O’Leary. Mardi O’Leary has opened a clinic called Crystal Clear Ears in Geelong to help with this problem. “Lots of people have trouble with a regular build up of earwax and need to visit their doctor or clinic nurse to have the ears flushed out with water,” she said. “Many people find it uncomfortable, or it doesn’t work well for them, or they have been advised by their ear specialist not to have water in the ear.” Mardi uses a method called Micro-suction, which is also used in Ear hospitals. “The method used is dry, (no water), and gently removes any earwax,” she said. “Crystal Clear Ears are well established in Melbourne, and have now expanded their service to Geelong. “Children and adults come to the clinics, and people with hearing aids have a particular need for regular visits. Sometimes the hearing aid will whistle, simply because the ears are blocked.” She said a blocked ear can cause itchiness, and really drive you mad. “You just can’t wait to get the ear unblocked, so you can get on with your life,” Mardi said. She said she has seen some interesting things in ears, plastic beads, cotton bud tips, tiny insects, and hearing aid parts. Call Crystal Clear on 1300 260 750 or check the website on www.crystalclearclinic.com.au to learn more, and to book an appointment.

Skilled staff to meet all those servicing and car care needs GEELONG has known it as the go-to workshop for brakes and exhausts for 10 years but there’s a whole lot more to South Geelong Exhaust and Car Care these days - including a new manager. Manager Andy Coulter, has 25 years of experience in the automotive industry and has the knowhow to ensure cars run well, are reliable and safe and achieve the best fuel economy possible. “Failing to maintain a regular servicing history can often lead to other problems and any perceived money-saving in the short-term can lead to further costs in the long term,” Andy said. From log book servicing to specialised repairs, the car-care centre has the ability to meet your needs from bumper to bumper. The South Geelong operation has skilled staff on hand to repair any faults and consults owners on major work first, ensuring there are no surprises on the bill. Also cater for all standard and sports exhausts for all makes and models. “Customised systems and extractors are also a speciality as well as brakes, suspension, clutches and all mechanical repairs,” Andy said. The workshop is at 17 Wood Street, South Geelong, or call 5221 2512.

Draw quirk quandry in Menzel comeback By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S team lists this week will be among the most heavily scrutinised of the season as the football world holds its breath awaiting the return of Daniel Menzel to AFL football. Ironically, the likelihood is that Menzel will not play any football at all this weekend due to a quirk in the draw. Geelong’s VFL team plays on Sunday, leaving only a five-day break to its next AFL game, a Friday night fixture against Collingwood at the MCG. Coach Chris Scott said at his weekly media conference on Wednesday that the match committee was still undecided about selecting Menzel to play against St Kilda on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium. “One of the things we're considering is that our VFL team has a game this Sunday and our AFL team plays the following Friday. “The likelihood of him playing VFL on the Sunday and then his first AFL game next Sunday is very unlikely.” The decision is all the more difficult as Geelong faces three mustwin games to conclude the home and away rounds in order to snare a final eight spot. Geelong’s final game is against fellow finals contender Adelaide at Simonds Stadium, with the most likely scenario having the winner play finals. Scott said resting Menzel after six weeks straight in the VFL before setting him for next Friday night’s Collingwood clash was

WALK THIS WAY: Steve Johnson steps out with teammates at training this week. 143217 “well and truly one of the options”. “He’s got a pretty good grounding and maybe freshening up would be the smart thing to do any way. “In concert with the fact that it’s a really short break, a fiveday break, between AFL and VFL games that probably makes that scenario more enticing.” Scott said Menzel’s progress was “still tracking along really well”.

“Dan’s getting much closer. I’m confident he will play AFL football before the end of the season. "I’m more confident of that than I’ve ever been. “The risk we're guarding against, and we could be accused of being too conservative, is him coming back to a level that he’s not quite prepared for and getting injured again. “He’s confident in his own abil-

ities and he feels like he’s ready to play. But he’s shared our view that it’s prudent to take our time with his return. “Our eyes are firmly focussed on the big picture. For him it is that his return to AFL football is successful and he can have a big year next year.” Scott said the selection quandary came down to “gut feel and coaching intuition”.

ANGLERS capitalised on calm conditions off Queenscliff over the weekend for catches of squid to just over 1kg. Others fishing deep in Queenscliff Bight boated larger specimen on baited or size 3.5 artificial jigs, with some anglers then using their fresh bait to catch gummy sharks to 15kg in the south channel. Clifton Springs also produced squid. I went out at first light on Sunday morning drifting over the shallow grass beds just east of the ramp where I boated squid to 600g on 2.5-sized jigs. Anglers reported catching snapper to 6kg in the Wilson Spit area during the evenings, with counterparts drifting the channel edges caught flathead to 45cm. Corio Bay’s inner-harbour hosted pinkie snapper in tight against structure and over the spoil grounds. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt was successful with soft plastics on fish to 40cm. The Barwon River estuary continued producing reasonable numbers of Australian salmon near the entrance. Small metal lures did the trick on the incoming tide, with salmon to 1.5kg banked. Further up the river anglers who had pumped Bass yabbies banked bream to 38cm and the odd mulloway as a by-catch. The tuna season showed no sign of slowing down in the western district, with numerous fish over 60kg taken off Portland and Port Macdonald. School-sized tuna to 15kg were present in shallower depths off Portland where small skirted lures such as Richter Jelly Babes worked a treat.

On the

Lake Bullen Merri produced Chinook salmon to 1.5kg on pilchard fillets fished on lightly weighted running-sinker rigs amid well-established berley trail. Anglers trolling the north end of the lake around first light boated well-conditioned rainbow trout to 2kg on Daiwa Double Clutch 75s. The so-called Lake of 1000 Casts, or Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, provided Frank Benvenuto with an impressive-sized brown trout of 64cm. Frank noticed the trout leaping from the water around his mudeye under a float for some time before engulfing the bait. Frank’s friend nearby had similar success, landing a brown trout of 1kg while casting a Rapala Spotted Dog lure along the main rock wall. Bradley Cox and Michael Evans teamed up with Trevor Holmes for a trip on the trout to Lake Toolondo. Working lures around the timber, Bradley hooked his first brown trout, a trophy fish of 58cm and 2.8kg that made quite an impression. They guys then went on to catch a few smaller-model redfin and rainbow trout. Over the next week anglers should consider Queenscliff for squid or silver trevally inside the harbour, while a trip down the western district for tuna could be worthwhile if the weather allows. Closer to home, the Barwon estuary should provide the best family fishing for bream, salmon and trevally.

It’s do or die for Warriors in must-win final round NORTH Geelong faces a dramatic final round as it faces Werribee away in a must win game. The round 26 clash is a match the Warriors cannot afford to lose if they wish to remain in the NPL next season. The epic final round clash sees 12th placed North Geelong face Werribee in 13th. Both are on 18 points but North Geelong has the greater goal difference. Werribee heads into the final round

with some confidence after picking up crucial wins two weeks in a row. After losing head coach Nino Ragusa a few weeks back, Werribee hit the wobbles but new coach Domenico Gangemi has steadied the ship with the team becoming difficult to score against. Likewise North Geelong has built confidence in the closing stages of the year, having found the net 12 times in its last five matches. The best was last Saturday’s emphatic 3-0 win against Dandenong.

The first 25 minutes saw a see saw game with both teams trying to work each other out. However the Warriors stepped up a gear marshalled by midfielder Vito Cichello and started opening up the opposition. A set piece outside the box was met by a glancing header from Nikola Jurkovic to send the Warriors up 1-0 and lift the excitement of the home fans. The Warriors retained control in the second half despite renewed intent by the

visitors. Remaining undeterred the Warriors didn’t keep fans waiting long when forward Gareth Richards collected possession in the box in the 53rd minute to round Dandenong keeper Anthony Saric and slot in for a 2-0 lead. Richards surfaced again in the 76th minute, rising for a header that deceived Saric in goals and dribbled over the line for the final score line.

Where would your club be without you? They’re players, coaches, committee members, volunteers and supporters. And every week, their club relies on the contribution of every one of them. But they’re also farmers, tradesmen, office workers, truck drivers and much more as well. And doing those jobs safely, in safe working environments, is vital. To the workers, their families – and to their footy club. PROUD SPONSOR OF COUNTRY FOOTY FOR 13 YEARS.

It’s perfect weather for our award winning pasties...

After the War in 1947 the couple moved to Williamstown, where Vic worked as a baker before deciding to buy the shop where he had been working and operating Victor Routley it together. Working “days” began at midnight, when they stoked up their big brick lined “scotch” oven, fired with wood or briquettes. They would put the pies in first, when the oven was hottest, followed by cakes and then the delicate sponges. In 1971, Vic and Verna Verna Routley handed on the baton to their son Lawrie and his wife Anne, who have expanded the business with the help of their five children (Simon, Penny, Michael, Kate and Sam) to what it is today. There are now also 10 great grand children, and the eldest Lawrie Routley – current CEO Michael, is now working for the business.
