■ Brothers go full throttle to tackle depression...

and felt an immediate connection. “I knew right then and there I had to get involved.” Mark said the suicide rate in Australia was sickening, at an average of seven deaths every day. He said 79 per cent were male. “So what can we do? Well, we can try and raise awareness, bring the issue into the light, talk about it openly and often,” he said.

DEPRESSION has brought two brothers together for the first time in nine years for a motorcycle journey to the heart of Australia. Dandenong man Mark PembertonWebb and David Pemberton, from England, left Melbourne on the Black Dog Ride to the Red Centre on Saturday 15 August. About 500 motorbike riders from around the country will make the week-long journey to raise funds for Mental Health First Aid’s teen program and Lifeline’s online Crisis Support Chat service. They’ll stop in towns along the way to start conversations about depression and suicide prevention. David is the only international participant and flew to Australia to reunite with Mark on 7 August. Together, they’ll make the almost 6500 kilometre round trip on their motorbikes. Their father in England was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2006. Mark relied on telephone conversations to keep in touch but flew to England to see him as the condition took hold. “I had my 46th birthday there, and on that night had a heart attack,” he said. “Things changed for me after that. “I was tired, had poor concentration and was moody and plagued with negative thoughts and feelings of hopelessness. “This was the start of my silent war with depression.” Mark’s doctor referred him to a counsellor. “It was a difficult journey, but one that was well worth it,” he said. “My dear dad lost his fight with cancer and died a few months later. “In 2012, I had another heart attack

Long arm of the law Shotgun pulled IN BRIEF
A MAN has faced court for drunkenly striking two car windscreens with a foot-scooter and injuring an elderly man during a punch-on with his twin brother in central Dandenong several years ago. Rick Thomas Williams, 30, had been taken into custody after being picked up for the outstanding arrest warrants by Protective Services Officers on Monday. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on Monday that Williams had struck the windscreens about 9pm on 28 March 2013 as he walked along Edith Street in Dandenong. The “highly intoxicated” Wil-
liams was detained by witnesses, and “persistently used indecent language”, prosecutor Senior Constable Fiona Davis told a court on Monday. He was taken to police cells to sober up, the court was told. Williams also pleaded guilty to reckless conduct causing injury, affray, breach of the peace and public drunkeness over a fight with brother Luke on Lonsdale Street, Dandenong in June 2011. The brawl flared from an argument at The Dandy Inn. The brothers hit each other to the head and crashed into an antique shop’s display as they moved northwards along the street.
At the shop, Williams pushed a 72-year-old male bystander to the chest, grabbed and threw him to the pavement. The traumatised victim suffered grazes and swelling to his forehead, the court was told. Sen Const Davis said Williams’ brother refused to be handcuffed and was hit with OC spray after turning to a police officer in a threatening manner. Williams made full admissions while his brother was “too aggressive to be interviewed”. When asked why he was drunk, Williams told police it was because he was walking out of a pub.
He said there was “no reason” for attacking the elderly victim. Defence lawyer Michelle Nguyen said Williams was recovering from serious injuries after being assaulted by his twin in Canberra in March. She said the accused had been “hit to the head with force for quite some time”, requiring brain surgery and a metal plate inserted in his head. Doctors had told Williams he couldn’t continue to work as a diesel mechanic as a result. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen released Williams on bail pending a community corrections order assessment on Tuesday.
Chris leaves big footprints - by design By CASEY NEILL DANDENONG’S Christophe Rousselin has a passion for drafting and design - and the talent to match. “I like the idea of leaving a footprint in a building,” he said. “It’s a way to leave something from you.” The 22-year-old received a commendation in the Best Digital Presentation by a Student category and a $200 prize at the recent Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV) Building Design Awards. Christophe walked judges through his design for an upgrade to Dromana Surf Life Saving Club. “It’s a site in front of the beach so we had to be really careful about the design of the building,” he said. “We worked around the existing conditions and aimed to keep the identity of the building itself. “I had a lot of fun doing the project. I think that’s the main thing. “If you want to do something you should have fun doing it. “Getting that prize was just a bonus.” Christophe was thrilled to receive the recognition and to meet key players in the industry at the awards night. He finished his Advanced Diploma in Building Design (Architectural) course at Chisholm Institute of TAFE about a month ago and is trying to find a job. “I’ve actually met a few people there who gave me business cards,” he said. Christophe went to high school in Mauritius and arrived in Australia almost three years ago. “It was a bit challenging,” he said. “There’s a lot of opportunity and there’s heaps of stuff to do here.”
in road rage drama A MAN has reported to police that he had a shotgun pulled on him in a terrifying road rage confrontation in Dandenong South this week. Police said the 33-year-old victim, from Bonbeach, was driving a motorbike along Greens Road between 8am and 8.30am on Monday 17 August when a man driving a black Holden Clubsport cut the motorcyclist off as he approached Hammond Road. When the victim honked his horn at the car driver the offender swerved several times at the motorcyclist and hit his bike, causing damage to the motorbike’s indicator and the handlebars. The Holden driver also allegedly tried to use his car to push the motorcyclist into traffic. When both drivers soon stopped at a red light at the intersection of Greens Road and Dandenong-Frankston Road, the offender went to grab at the motorcyclist and then pointed what appeared to be the barrel of a shotgun at the victim out of the car window. The motorcyclist rode off and the car driver was seen heading south on Greens Road to the South Gippsland Highway.
Elderly woman punched, robbed A MAN has been charged with a litany of difoffences after police say he broke into a Dandenong house, punched an elderly woman inside the home, and stole her car. Police allege the man broke into through the back door of the Bassett Street property with a jemmy bar about 8.30am on Tuesday 11 August, before walking upstairs where he confronted the 69-year-old female occupant, punched her in the face and demanded cash. When he wasn’t able to get cash, the man is allegedly took the victim’s car keys and stolen her Toyota Camry from the garage. A 31-year-old man with no fixed address was later charged in relation to the aggravated burglary after police found him in Doveton and arrested him following a foot chase. The man is allegedly linked to a number of offences in Dandenong and Casey. The man was charged with aggravated burglary, nine counts of burglary, eight counts of theft, theft of a motor vehicle, seven counts of theft from a motor vehicles, recklessly causing injury, two counts of going equipped to steal, handling stolen goods, evading police, criminal damage, assaulting police, resisting police and driving while disqualified.

WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST-KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT MACPHERSON STREET, NAMED IN HONOUR OF AN EARLY EDUCATOR.
Scottish educator was a street wise influence on town MALCOLM Macpherson was the first headmaster of the first state school in Dandenong - now Dandenong Primary School. He emigrated from Scotland to New South Wales in 1855 at age 21. He and his London-born wife Mary lived in several towns in country NSW and Victoria before arriving in Dandenong. Malcolm was always a teacher and was also active as a farmer and a businessman. The Macphersons were a family of teachers. Among Malcolm’s small staff at the state school was his daughter Jane, who was listed as a pupil teacher. His son Jeffrey was born at Bathurst, NSW, and was four years old when his father took up the headmaster position in 1874. Malcolm had a wide range of inter-

ests and was involved in civic life. Records show he was public-spirited and a well-known figure in the community. For a time he was a shire councillor and he was involved with the Mechanics’ Institute and the Masonic Lodge, as would be his son. Malcolm invested shrewdly in land, and at age 55 he was appointed a sworn valuator. In an advertisement in the Journal eight years later, he was still offering his professional services in the field. Young Jeffrey was to follow in his father’s footsteps as a teacher. He taught at Melbourne Grammar School where he was a master in the senior school from 1891 to 1902 and the librarian from 1895 to 1898. He was also involved in some teaching at Dandenong Grammar School, a
private secondary school his father established on leaving the Victorian Department of Education. Malcolm foresaw a growing demand for secondary education in Dandenong. Jeffrey was proud of Dandenong. Like his father, he pressed for improvements to the town. In a letter to the Journal on 26 February 1908, on the subject of ‘that windswept Sahara which we call Lonsdale Street’ he suggested that gardens be built down the centre of the street. Jeffrey placed the ad in the Journal on 4 October 1905, announcing that he had acquired William Brocket’s legal practice and started practice as a barrister and solicitor. He gave 237 Collins Street as his Melbourne office, the Royal Hotel in Dandenong as his local place of busi-
ness and Macpherson Street, Dandenong, as his home. Charles Hyde Parker Kelley, also of Dandenong, became Mr Macpherson’s junior partner about 1914. Macpherson and Kelley in 1972 built the first high-rise in Dandenong at 229 Lonsdale Street, moved to Scott Street in 1999. Jeffrey died of pneumonia in 1938, aged 68. He was described as “one of Dandenong’s best-known and bestloved citizens”, “the quiet, kind philosopher and scholar whose tolerance, keen sense of humour and unassuming humility made him stand out from his fellows and earn their regard”. - From Once a Country Practice: A history of the law firm of Macpherson and Kelley.

The advance was made over open country and under terrible fire from artillery, machine guns and rifles. It was during this advance that T Couve was killed. It was reported that I was wounded, but if this appears in the papers take no notice of it, as the closet they got to me was to hit my rifle, and one through the leg of my trousers. The platoon sergeant again had trouble, getting a bullet one inch
above the other wound in his leg, but he was up with us that night. We were to be relived next day, but were not relived till five days later. It had been raining all day, and was still going strong. We started to leave our trenches at 11pm then the fun began. Men were continually getting stuck in the mud which in parts of the trenches, was knee deep. After falling into the creek, falling into dugouts etc, wading across the creek about a dozen times and other little accidental trips into wells and things, we arrived at our halting place at 3am. All this time bullets had been whistling down the creek, but only three men were hit.

Courthouse fracas By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has lashed out at police in court after being jailed for repeatedly driving without a court-ordered alcohol interlock device in Narre Warren and Doveton. Vincent Jean-Paul Manuel repeatedly yelled expletives and struggled with three police officers as he was escorted to cells after the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on Monday. During the violent scuffle, walls were thumped outside the courtroom exit as he was forced to the ground by officers. “Get f ****** off me, c**** ,” Manuel screamed during the struggle.
Manuel had pleaded guilty to a range of charges, including drug-driving with ice and cannabis, and driving without an interlock six times in September, March, April and May. Each interlock offence was punishable with up to four months’ jail. He had been serving a community corrections order at the time for driving without an interlock in 2013. During one of the detected breaches, Manuel claimed he had removed the interlock because of a battery issue, police prosecutor Senior Constable Fiona Davis told the court. He had also resisted arrest in a Rowville backyard in February over false number plates
affixed to his black Clubsport Commodore - one of several charges involving false plates. Manuel told police at the time to “get f*****", that he’d done nothing wrong as he refused to put his hands behind his back, the court was told. He was subdued with OC spray after he lunged aggressively at a police officer. Manuel was also charged with possessing ice as he sat in a car with no plates in Cranbourne, several counts of driving an unregistered vehicle and failing to answer bail. Defence lawyer Rachel Hopkins told the court Manuel suffered post-traumatic stress and memory loss from being stabbed in the head in 2007, as well as injuries from a car crash.
She said Manuel had completed seven of the required 40 hours of unpaid work as part of his existing community-based order. The order didn’t address his underlying drug and mental health issues, Ms Hopkins said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he wouldn’t place Manuel on another community corrections order because “he’s not going to comply”. “You’ve got such repetitive (offending) behaviour, there’s no alternative for a court but to impose a term of imprisonment.” Manuel was jailed for two months, disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined $1500. Hours after his sentence,

Manuel appealed but was refused appeal bail by Mr Vandersteen. The magistrate said appeal bail was normally granted but took into account Manuel’s disobedient history as well as his “appalling” behaviour to police that morning. “You’re simply an unacceptable risk of re-offending.” Defence lawyer Rachel Hopkins said her client claimed he was “handled badly” by the officers and “responded to the treatment he received”. Manuel was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 31 August. His County Court appeal was scheduled for October.

Stabbed in bank brawl A FIGHT between three men outside a Westpac bank in Springvale has ended with one of the men being rushed to hospital with puncture wounds from an alleged stabbing. It’s not known what started the fight nor whether the men were known to each other when the fight broke out outside the bank on Springvale Road, about 2pm on Monday 17 August. A 40-year-old Springvale man was taken to The Alfred hospital with nonlife threatening puncture wounds to his lower back. A Footscray West man and a second man, both in their twenties, were interviewed by police and released.

POLICE are searching for a man who allegedly set two bollards on fire at an oval in Keysborough earlier this month. It’s believed a red Holden Jackaroo was driven onto the oval at Chandler Road about 11.20am on Tuesday 11 August, after which a man was seen getting out of the car and then setting fire to two bollards. The bollards, next to the entrance to the oval, were removed from the ground and then set alight, which led to extensive damage.

Sky's the pokies limit By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE heavy cost of poker machines is a high one but hidden from everyday concerns, according to those leading the newly-formed Alliance for Gambling Reform. Greater Dandenong became one of the first councils to sign up to the national alliance this month. Within its borders, more than $117 million was poured into pokie-machine slots in 2014/15. Dr Charles Livingstone, academic and one of the alliance leaders, says that by Productivity Commission estimates, 60 per cent of that figure - or $70 million - would come from problem gamblers in Greater Dandenong. The council area is the thirdhighest grossing area for pokies in Victoria, yet also one of the
most socio-economically disadvantaged. “The harm can’t be over-estimated. It flows onto the problem gamblers’ family, friends and employers,” Dr Livingstone said. He said the alliance - including welfare groups, local governments, inter-church groups had formed out of concern of the “untouchable” pokies industry “riding roughshod over people’s legitimate concerns”. “In recent times (the pokies industry) have used their influence to buy political favours and intimidate politicians to get what they want. “We don’t want to stop people having fun, but we want to stop the harm. “It’s very hard to get things done to reduce the harm.” Other alliance members are
Attempted murder, arson charges as house burns By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG North man will answer attempted murder and arson charges over a fire that destroyed a historic home on Thursday night. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Dean Hayes said the 31-year-old man was in remand to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday 21 August. He said experts were still working to determine how the fire in the Carlton Road, Dandenong North, home started.
A CFA spokeswoman said crews were called to Ferring Homestead just before 7pm on 20 August and deemed the blaze under control just after 7pm. “The house was well alight,” she said. She said six trucks, from Dandenong and Hallam, responded to the call to the single-storey weatherboard homestead, which was about 100 years old and covered by a heritage overlay. It’s unclear whether anyone aside from the charged man was inside the home at the time of the fire.
anti-gambling campaigner Tim Costello, council peak bodies, welfare agencies such as The Salvation Army and Brotherhood of St Laurence as well as the Inter-Church Taskforce against Gambling. One of the drivers is City of Monash councillor Geoff Lake. He says Australians spend $16 billion on gambling each year, more than either alcohol ($14 billion), tobacco ($13 billion) or illicit drugs ($7 billion). About three-quarters of problem gamblers use the pokies. Each loses on average $21,000 a year. “It’s a hidden impact to some degree,” Cr Lake says. “It has by far the highest incidence of problem gambling and impact on people’s lives. It’s these machines that are put
on every corner, in every community.” The alliance will seek reducing maximum bet limits to $1 - which Cr Lake would limit losses from more than $1000 an hour to about $100. Other changes would include requiring regulatory bodies to closely consider the impact of extra machines and venues in disadvantaged areas. Leon Wiegard, president of clubs peak body Community Clubs Victoria, says pokies opponents overstate the possible amount lost per hour on pokies - a rate that varies between machines and venues. “The machines simply don’t spin that quickly.” On setting lower maximum bets, Mr Wiegard said it was akin to “50-cent bets at the
TAB ... virtually banning them from having the bet they want to have”. “We live in a world that people are entitled to have a say in how they behave. “If there’s any gambling going on in the world, there will be losses.” For 99.5 per cent of gamblers, pokies are a recreational pursuit not a problematic habit, he said. “It’s come down from 2.5 per cent (problem gamblers) to 0.5 per cent - so we’re winning.” He said a voluntary selfexclusion program for problem gamblers to ban themselves from Victorian pokie venues had been a success. “We don’t want problem gamblers. It’s not in our interests for people to go broke.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Left gasping by hot water service replacement RECENTLY I have had my gas heater decommissioned and had my hot water service replaced. To my horror I was asked to pay exorbitant call-out fees and service fees. When I go to work I don’t get paid a call-out fee of around $145 and service fees in 15 minute increments of around $25, which equals $100 on top of the call-out fee. I get a flat hourly rate of pay which I have to be happy with. Families trying to survive can’t afford these excessive fees on top of replacing worn-out appliances or pay for parts to repair appliances. In the case of my heater, which was only eight years
CRANBOURNE-Dandenong RSL is unveiling an Australian-first war memorial for servicepeople who died during training exercises. Sub-branch president John Wells hopes the memorial will evolve to name all of the victims - several thousand who remain unrecognised even at the National War Memorial. “We’ve had this huge cost of lives - men, women and children. They deserve better and as a society, we need to be better,” Mr Wells said. A dedication ceremony will be held at the memorial at Cranbourne RSL, 1475 South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne on 30 August, at 2pm. THE angry pills were obviously being handed around Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday. During a heated morning session, an accused man swore and struggled before being wrestled to the ground by police, a stroppy lawyer berated his client and an observing journalist in the foyer, and an unknown female went on a shouting spree inside and outside the courtroom for 15 minutes. And it wasn’t even a full moon ... NON-PROFIT groups in Greater Dandenong can now access a cash boost. Sandown Greyhound Racing Club with Greyhounds Entertainment has opened applications for its Community Grants Fund.
Organisations that provide outstanding service to the community in health, recreation or cultural awareness can apply for between $250 and $20,000. Visit sandowngreyhounds.com.au for more information. Applications close 1 April. DANDENONG Market Lotto put big smiles on one Latrobe Valley family’s faces. A father in his 50s won a $2.1 million division one Tattslotto prize on 9 August but won’t be retiring any time soon. “I get bored way too easily,” he said. “The kids’ birthdays are coming up so they will definitely be getting spoilt with the double beds and iPods they’ve always wanted.”
old and I have had serviced biannually, I had no choice but pay to have it checked and then be told it was going to be decommissioned because of carbon monoxide emissions. Now I have found out that particular model has been recalled but the company has not contacted me despite the publicity in late June. This industry needs to be regulated and fees bought in line with what families can afford. In the case of my hot water service, it had given very good service and needed replacing but I needed advice to what size and model to replace the old one with and it’s hard to know where to begin when it curls up its
toes and fails in the depths of a cold winter. No heater, no hot water service... in the middle of winter! There are no gas and fuel shops or Origin Energy shops left to go and get advice and consumers like myself are at the mercy of companies when left stranded by failing appliances and not knowing where to go for help or advice. Things need to change and companies need to give advice freely and the government needs to see that this change is effective immediately! Gaye Guest, Noble Park.
SOCIALLY SPEAKING RE: Council split on ‘racist’ call COUNCILLOR Memeti is forgetting that he actually said this to public who attended the meeting also. The councillors might be happy to ignore what he did, then that is their decision, but I think he has an obligation to apologise to the public. I think should be done at the next council meeting so it is recorded! If we made a comment like that we would not get away with it, why should he? Harik, via web. GOOD decision by the majority of councillors to not
sell the Glendale Reserve and to keep the open space available to all the community. Just a shame that Cr Memeti’s unfair criticism of his fellow councillors as racist, everyone’s opinion should be valued and respected. Remember we live in a democracy and this should be supported. Mel Bourne, via web. RE: SABA hits out at leaked email dirty tricks I do not have a pro-meters stance as printed. My reasons for opposition to parking meters have been well-documented.
The reason I voted the way I did was because I utterly resented councillors Memeti and Chea accusing myself and other councillors of racism for not supporting them on an earlier matter before council, and I had no intention of giving support to those two councillors who were making unfounded claims against my council colleagues for being racist. If Crs Chea and Memeti expected my support they lost it because of their malicious attack on the mayor and other councillors earlier that evening. Councillor Peter Brown, via web.

YOUR VOICE FOR 150 YEARS
DANDENONG JOURNAL
The member next door By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS WHAT are the chances: a former Dandenong-based MP living next door to a Dandenong-based journalist? Dr Ron Wells represented Eumemmerring Province in the State Upper House in 1992-'99 - the first Liberal elected to the seat. My tenure on the Dandenong Journal started more than a decade later. Nearing his 80th birthday, Dr Wells remains vital and politically alert as we visit his old stomping ground at Dandenong Market. The former veterinary medical researcher and university teacher tells me he doesn’t think of old age. “I’m looking forward to a vigorous career ahead.” At Dandenong Market, he marvels at its reconstruction, its comfort and array of foods and cultures. “Dandenong is a wonderful place,” he says. “It’s looking bigger and better now.” He listens eagerly to a merchandise trader’s gripes about the lack of shoppers. “Get onto your MP,” Dr Wells advised. Listening was a big part of the job, he tells me. He started up an Unemployment Hour radio program on Casey community station 3SER - talkback that generated headlines in the nation’s media. He also got to know the waves of new arrivals who had settled in Dandenong since the end of World War II. When he arrived in the seat, Dr Wells was quoted by the Journal refer-

As we sit in the market food court, Dr Wells tells me he knew Dandenong was much more important than its size indicated. “It is like a miniature Australia. When I was elected to Eumemmerring, I said: as Eumemmerring goes, so Australia will go. “We had the greatest challenges facing us. I was very conscious of that.”

One of the over-riding concerns of the area was “money to do more things”. “In a growing society there are huge welfare needs that are difficult to meet. “It’s always about economic management. You’ve got to have people who understand the economy in charge.” Dr Wells had a fiery introduction as an Eumemmerring MP, especially for one who appreciated “the priceless experience of being well-educated”.
A month after his election, Dr Wells and Berwick MP Robert Dean - with 10 police on hand - fronted a hostile public meeting in Doveton. In its front-page story “School Fury”, the Journal reported about 1000 parents, students and teachers taunted and hurled papers at the pair over the government’s impending closure of Joseph Banks Secondary College. Photographer Andrew Henshaw captured the moment when an angry parent was restrained as he fronted a “startled” Dr Wells. The closure doesn’t seem to sit well with him when I remind him. “Education was and is central to a modern, democratic way of life and

I could not be in favour of closing schools. “But I believe democracy is the way to go. It’s a team effort and you can’t get your way every time.” Within two months of that public meeting, Dr Wells announced no doubt more welcome news - an extra 1000 places at Dandenong College of TAFE. Dr Wells says he’d always wanted to see schools more like community hubs - an idea that is increasingly catching on. “At day, a school; at night, a community centre” was how he put it. As we leave the market, we’re confronted by a waist-high metal barrier.I’m shocked to see a sprightly Dr Wells, without a creaking joint, duck under the bar and move on. In March 1993 - the first of several columns for the Journal - Dr Wells reflected on the need for an “efficient media to report and discuss the events of daily democracy”. “Journalists have such immense political power that if they fail to present fair, efficient and accurate reporting of events, they fail in their unique responsibility and democratic government suffers.” He tells me that he had a mutually helpful relationship with local newspapers. “It’s hard work for the local officials because they have got so many demands. “That’s why newspapers are important. They get our attention to what needs to be done. And they express the will of the people to get it done.”

School finds individual approach is for the best By CASEY NEILL NOBLE Park students are keeping ahead of the pack thanks to novel teaching techniques. Harrisfield Primary School principal Meredith Iaconese was thrilled with the school’s performance in the recently-released National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results. She said it was proof the school’s unique teaching model was working. “From what I’m just seeing here there are no surprises,” she said. “We continue to be doing really well in spelling in grammar. “We’re significantly above the state.” Ms Iaconese said children in Grades 4 to 6 were grouped into the Senior Learning House. They are then split up according to ability rather than age. “They move according to the skills that are being taught at the time,” she said. “We don’t teach classes we teach children. “That is something that we’ve really focused on.” She said the school had fulltime art, physical education and information and communication technology (ICT) specialists. “Because they don’t have a full-time load in that specialist subject, they also take a group when it’s reading time,” she said.
Principal Meredith Iaconese with Grade 5 students David, Brooke, Maria and Ethan. 143207 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS So instead of having about 25 kids in four groups for reading, Ms Ianconese said students were split into eight smaller groups. “The focus is much tighter, based on the student needs,” she said. There are six maths groups in the Senior House. “I think that’s really helped. It’s narrowed down for teachers,”
Ms Iaconese said. “You can really target your small group work so much tighter.” She said explicit teaching was also making a difference to outcomes. “It’s that whole thing of leaving nothing to chance,” she said. “There’s a learning intention for each lesson.
“The children know what that learning intention is. They know what they’re working towards. “They get feedback at the end of the lesson about how they’ve gone. “They have feedback for the teachers, too.” Then there’s a lesson at 10am each day called intervention. “We identify students that

Move from eyesore to pocket parkland AN abandoned school site in Noble Park is attracting vandals. City of Greater Dandenong Councillor Peter Brown called for the former Noble Park Special Developmental School grounds in Callander Road to be cleaned up. A State Government spokesman said the Education Department sold the site in November 2013 and it was now in private hands. “I assumed the department still owned it because all their signs are still up,” Cr Brown said. “We can issue a cleanup notice and other action can be taken if our compliance department deem it unsafe. “I guess that will be the next step.” Cr Brown said the derelict buildings were attracting anti-social behaviour “which the neighbours can well do without”. “It does pose security issues to those dwellings,” he said. “The site needs to be cleaned up. “Once cleared with the established trees only left, it would look like a pocket park.”

have a deficit in particular skills,” Ms Iaconese said. “Teachers work with just two children on that skill. All the other students are working on no new learning. “Kids come in and out of this intervention program. They might have three sessions. “The aim is to progress them as much as we can in each year. “It’s really hard if kids are six months behind at the starting point, or a year behind. “We have a lot of children coming in with limited English.” The teaching program has been in place for about four years, since the Federal Government funded flexible learning spaces. Ms Iaconese said teachers operated as a tight team. “They are never apart,” she said. “Their tables are together, they sit talking at lunch time, before school, after school - it’s all discussion about student learning. “They are discussing kids constantly. “If I was teaching a child a particular skill and I simply couldn’t get them to achieve the outcome, I’m not afraid to go to another teacher and say ‘maybe your way is better than my way’. “It’s hard work. “We know it’s for the best for the kids and we know that it’s working.”

Gwen Jarvis Born 22 September 1922 Died 14 August 2015 DANDENONG treasure and former mayoress Gwen Jarvis has died just weeks shy of her 93rd birthday. Alongside her late husband and three-time Dandenong mayor Maurie Jarvis, Gwen not only built a life in Dandenong for her own family, but a community for generations to come. She made her mark through the Truby King Infant Welfare Centre, Dandenong West Kindergarten and Primary School, Girl Guides, Dandenong Trinity Uniting Church and Wallara. “Wallara was started in our living room in 1959,” Gwen proudly told the Journal. For 40 years she volunteered with Dandenong’s Festival of Music and Art for Youth, and the YWCA recognised her work to establish the organisation in Dandenong by naming a facility in her honour in Hammond Road. Gwen was named a City of Greater Dandenong Living Treasure, an honour reserved for people who made a lasting impact on the quality and nature of life for all in the municipality. She was the second daughter of Charles and Doris McPhee and was born at home in Close Avenue, Dandenong, in 1922. She attended Dandenong West Primary School followed by Dandenong High School, where she was a prefect in her final year.
Gwen Jarvis was a Dandenong Living Treasure.
Maurie and Gwen Jarvis at a tree planting in Hemmings Park in the mid 1960s. Church was an important part of her family’s life and it was there Gwen met Maurie. They were married in the Methodist Church in 1944 when Maurie was home on war-time leave from the Torres Strait Islands.
They first lived in Stud Road, Dandenong, before building a home in Jones Road, Dandenong West. Journal reporter and Gwen’s Dandy High classmate Marg Stork in 2012 wrote: “Over the years, I had the pleasure of visiting them at
their home, to see the banks of beautiful rhododendrons which struck a colourful springtime note and which we featured in the Dandenong Journal on a number of occasions.” Gwen moved into Valley Village Mews on Stud Road, Dandenong, when Maurie passed away in 2003 and later moved to Millhaven Lodge in Pakenham where she died peacefully on Friday 14 August. During her 85 years in Dandenong, Gwen watched a small country town transform into a bustling multicultural city. Gwen’s grandson and Journal reporter Russell Bennett recently spoke to her for the paper’s 150th anniversary, and said her memories of what made Dandenong so great in her eyes were still as vivid as ever. “All the friends we had were great - they were my life. The people there were all good to me, and I was good to them,” she said. At a council-hosted 90th birthday party in 2012, Gwen told Marg: “I love Dandenong. It is the city where my heart is.” Gwen is survived by daughters Elizabeth, Bronwyn, Sue and Marion, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Chris, Roeun and Robert Testimonial The approach at LJ Hooker Glen Waverley is completely different and extremely refreshing. LJ Hooker has handled my properties for a long time and they are by far the best property managers I have ever worked with. They understand the market as well as the needs of both owner and tenant. They found several tenants for my properties and on all occasions I have been extremely happy with the tenants and also the level of service. When there have been maintenance issues, the property manager has found quality, professional tradesmen and no job has required re-work. On one occasion when the tenant caused the maintenance issue, they worked with them to resolve the problem. Having lived interstate for the past 12 months I could completely relax about my properties, knowing LJ Hooker Glen Waverley would look after them. I would not hesitate to recommend the LJ Hooker Property Managers Roeun, Chris and Robert to anyone who is seeking a managing agent. Yours sincerely, Chris and Jennifer Anderson

Partner’s extreme bashing By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SPRINGVALE South woman told police she thought she was going to die after her ex-partner allegedly threw her against furniture, punched her face and slammed her head into a concrete driveway in rage, a court has heard. At a court bail hearing on Monday, Constable Christopher Brinkman, of Dandenong police, said the man later told police: “Next time I go there I’ll do more damage”. The man had regularly “ig-
nored” a full family-violence intervention order protecting the victim since October 2014, police alleged. Since the order, the victim claimed she’d received 300 text and phone messages from the man and he’d visited her twice a week. On 5 August, the man allegedly tore the front gate from a side fence at the ex-partner’s home - though he claimed in court his ex-partner had hit the gate as she reversed the car. The court was told the man
allegedly drove her vehicle past her, missing her by “centimetres” on 16 August, Const Brinkman said. The man slammed her head into her home’s wall and into the driveway as she screamed for help. She was thrown through the home’s door, into a kitchen bench and into bookshelves. The man then stood over her and punched her face, causing significant swelling to her left eye, the court was told. The man allegedly threw her car keys and handbag onto her home’s roof. These were later
retrieved at a neighbour’s behest. The man was arrested after being found hiding in a back shed at his mother’s house. Earlier, the police called the man’s phone, which was answered by his “whimpering” mother. In the background was loud crashing and a man’s shouts. “Please don’t,” she was heard saying to the man. The applicant told the court he needed to care for his mother, who had debilitating arthritis, and had suffered two heart-at-
tacks and a heart bypass. He said he was seeing a psychiatrist who had been a “big help”. The man was twice convicted for assaults against her and with contravening an intervention order last year. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen remanded the man in custody for a contest mention at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 28 August. Mr Vandersteen refused bail because of the man’s long history of violence against the victim spanning more than 10 years.
Art from the heart A NOBLE Park art project has built skills, confidence and teamwork - and a flower-themed mosaic mural. Artist Amanda Forster guided about 10 people with disabilities at Galilee Supported Residential Service (SRS) through the creative process. Specialist support worker Daniela Markovic said the project encouraged residents to socialise. “I saw quite a few people change over the 10-week period and it was a real opportunity to develop the relationships,” she said. “When we had the exhibition and we revealed the artwork, a lot of residents who keep to
themselves came out and actually participated. “It’s in the outdoor area where people do spend a lot of time, and it’s visible also from the dining area.” Ms Markovic said Ms Forster was “amazing at engaging the residents”. “The residents do really have complex needs,” she said. “They often have a dual diagnosis - mental health and drugs or alcohol, or mental health and acquired brain injury. “We hadn’t seen some participate in other activities before." She said some staff-resident relationships improved during the project too.

THE law that applies to the assets and income of a deceased person depends on which state or territory of Australia the deceased person lived in when they died. Information on the Australian Tax Office site explains tax responsibilities only. Those who want to find more information about the inheritance laws that apply in states or territories should contact the Public Trustee Office. Someone who has been appointed as an executor or administrator of the estate of a deceased person will be responsible for managing the deceased estate’s tax affairs. When the assets of a deceased estate are distributed, a special rule applies that allows any capital gain or loss made on a CGT asset to be disregarded if the asset passes to the executor, to a beneficiary or from the executor to a beneficiary. When a person dies, their superannuation is paid to their beneficiaries, either directly or as part of their estate. Lump sum death benefits paid to dependants are generally tax free.
The taxation of lump sum death benefits paid to non-dependants and death benefit income streams depend on a number of factors. A death benefit termination payment is an employment termination payment (ETP) made by an employer after the death of an employee.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Bold Niria's carving out her new career By CASEY NEILL
NIRIA Blockley didn’t think she was smart enough to tackle a business course. But she has not only completed a Diploma of Business Administration - she finished the eight-month course in four. The Eumemmerring 27-year-old was the first graduate from Evocca College’s Dandenong campus. “I’ve wanted to do business studies for quite a while but I had a lot of people saying I wasn’t smart enough,” she said. “I wanted to see what it was like and see if I could actually do it. “I was quite shocked at what I could do.” Ms Blockley is now studying a Diploma of Management. “I thought I’d give management a try and see how that goes,” she said.
“Believe in yourself and you can achieve anything.” She’s studying with the aim of opening her own butcher shop. “I’m a trade qualified butcher. I love my meat,” she said. “I thought having my own butcher shop would be an ideal future.” When Ms Blockley’s not studying, she’s searching for work. “I’m trying to get into administration work,” she said. “I need to get some experience in another business.” She said her confidence grew during her studies and she learnt something new every day. Evocca College Dandenong opened in April this year and offers diploma-level courses in counselling, community services, business and events.

NEWS
DANDENONG rail giant Bombardier has given teens a taste of making trains and trams. The manufacturer last week partnered with Rail Skills Australia to host 15 students from Dandenong High School and Noble Park Secondary College. On the site tour, the teens interacted with rail experts, learnt about the work stations and specialist areas involved in manufacturing trains and trams, and witnessed work on the VLocity trains and Melbourne E-Class trams for Victoria and the Adelaide DMU trains for South Australia. Bombardier Transportation Australia human resources director Danny Walsh said the students were the rail industry’s future employees. “As they embark on their education and career decision-making processes, now is the time to show them what opportunities are available across the industry, and allow them to decide their future career path,” he said. “This was a great opportunity to reach out to the community and talk to young people about what we do at Bombardier, how we work and what we stand for.” RSA is a not-for-profit consultancy organisation working with secondary colleges and the rail industry to promote workforce, education and training advice to students. Its aim is to help create a more informed and resilient rail workforce in Australia.

Inspired to work by fresh view By CASEY NEILL DANDENONG High School students have taken a sideways look at the world of work. City of Greater Dandenong ran its second Work Inspiration program at the Dandenong Civic Centre over two days, Thursday 13 and Friday 14 August.
More than 30 Year 10 students completed hands-on experience and career conversations with adults in the workforce during the career development program, which featured inspirational speakers, activities and multiple workplace tours. The council worked with the YMCA to provide the alternative to traditional
work experience. “Work Inspirations is able to connect young people and businesses together, enabling our young students of today to become inspired, get exceptional mentoring and the opportunity to explore the world of work,” Mayor Sean O’Reilly said.
BUSINESSES can tap into the south-east’s future workforce at a smorgasbord of inspiration. SEBN and South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) will next month host Lunch with the Winners. CARWATHA College is raising cash to fight cancer through Relay for Life. Staff and students from the Noble Park North school will keep a baton moving throughout the night for the Greater Dandenong Cancer Council fund-raiser, which will take place at Ross Reserve Athletics Track in Noble Park from 3pm on Saturday 10 October to 9am on Sunday 11 October. Teacher Sally Ross said it was a huge community event. “I don’t think there’s anybody who hasn’t been touched by cancer,” she said. The school encourages its VCAL students to complete a
community-based project each year. “They choose which causes they’d like to support,” Ms Ross said. “This year they chose homelessness and cancer. “We looked into what we could do to support both of those causes.” Relay for Life was one. The school has signed up one team of seven staff - the Carwatha Champions - and is planning to sign up another team of seven as Carwatha Conquers Cancer. “The kids came up with both the team names,” Ms Ross said. There’ll be a steady stream of support for the walkers throughout the day and night.
“Already we’ve got 35 students that have volunteered their time to walk,” Ms Ross said. The school has so far banked $350 in donations and has another $500. “We were hoping to get to $1500 for one team. Now we’re hoping for $2000 for two teams combined,” she said. The Journal last month reported that the Greater Dandenong Relay for Life might not go ahead due to a lack of teams. Eight teams have now signed up, including the Dandy High Steppers and a Noble Park Aquatic Centre team, but organisers are still seeking more. Call 1300 656 585 or visit relayforlife.org.au.

A $100,000 grant for a new truck will help Greater Dandenong SES to help the community. The unit will combine $80,000 in fund-raising with the State Government Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP) cash to buy a new light rescue truck. Greater Dandenong SES unit controller Paul Daniel said it would replace a 14-year-old vehicle that had “reached the end of its life”. “It’s a credit to hard work from everybody within the SES
unit and also the community,” he said. “We raised money through a big raffle, tin collections, public relations events and a significant amount of support from the Dingley Village community bank.” Mr Daniel expects the new truck will arrive early next year. “It’ll help us to respond better, and given it’s a modern vehicle and it’s got all of the new branding on it, it presents a strong face to the community as far as SES is concerned,” he said. But Mr Daniel said the fund-
raising never stopped. “We have a 12-year-old four-wheel drive that needs to be replaced as soon as possible,” he said. The crew is also calling for daytime volunteers. Media liaison officer Russell Taylor said the ideal candidates would be available throughout the day to join the existing day team that responds to jobs between 8am to 6pm.” Visit www.ses.vic.gov.au/ volunteer/become-a-volunteer or email greaterdandenong@ ses.vic.gov.au for more information or to sign up.

Rangers in it... to win it By JARROD POTTER SEABL - Semi Finals DANDENONG Rangers had to dig deep to finally put away Ballarat after a supreme SEABL finals come-back. After a back-and-forth opening half, through the third term it appeared the Rangers would canter home after building an impressive 20-point lead on the back of starring efforts from Daequon Montreal (31 points), Lucas Walker (18 points and 12 rebounds) and Chuck Long (16 points, 9 rebounds). But with the season on the line in a do-or-die SEABL elimination final, the Miners didn’t go down without a fight. Battling foul trouble and Dandenong’s rampaging offence, Ballarat chipped away at the deficit as Roy Booker, Gregory Thondique and Everard Bartlett caused nothing but headaches down the stretch for the home side. Dragging the gap back to four in the final term - 73-69 - it took the heroics of Long and Montreal to save the Rangers in the end. Long reeled in a number of pointsaving blocks, steals and rebounds while Montreal smashed in his seventh 30-point haul of the season, spending a full 40 minutes on court. Long’s five-point effort late in the fourth - with a match-defining block, before hitting the jumper coast-tocoast and the ensuring free throw raised the bar once again to where the Miners could not strike. Thondique’s reach-around block on a dunk-attemping Montreal left a tiny glimmer of hope in the Ballarat camp
with a minute to go, but Dandenong calmly tightened the screws and shot out the match to advance. “The game is always a game of runs - the momentum can shift,” Dandenong coach Darren Perry said. “They had it in the first term, then we were down a few at quarter time, then we got a great second quarter run, finished the half well and looked like we were going to really do something in the third. “But like all teams that make the finals, they (Ballarat) had a great run into the finals - they’ve hung tough and won games you thought they wouldn’t win - and they found a way to come back at us.” Dandenong men head down the highway on Saturday night to face Geelong, with the winner through to the SEABL East Conference final against Albury-Wodonga. Meanwhile the Rangers’ women had a far easier time, dispatching Geelong 78-68 to earn a place in the SEABL East Conference final. While the Supercats had fired out of the blocks - taking a 38-36 lead at the half - Dandenong returned from the rooms with renewed confidence and clamped down on any of Geelong’s offensive forays. Aimie Clydesdale (16 points) started off proceedings in the third term with an incredible chase-down steal on future WNBL team mate Sara Blicavs, before running the court and draining the three-pointer on the next play. From there the Rangers’ outing steadily improved as Dandenong sunk
Above: Faith Probst and Sara Blicavs fly for a rebound in the SEABL East women’s qualifying final. 143419 Right: Daequon Montreal excelled in a 40-minute SEABL masterclass on Saturday evening, hitting 31 points. 143419 Pictures: JARROD POTTER 17-4 in the last five minutes of the third term to resoundingly claim the lead. The mighty efforts of triple SEABL premiership winners Alison Downie (7 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists) and Clare Papavs (13 points, 6 rebounds) shone through on the evening, with fellow champion Amelia Todhunter (17 points) stepping back up to her best. Papavs relished her defensive role on Blicavs - clamping down on the Australian Opal and keeping her to 16 points. Dandenong’s hustle set itself apart from Geelong as Rangers fought through the pressure to make its way back to the conference championship. Coach Larissa Anderson put the win down to an almighty word. “One word… defense,” Anderson said. “That’s the only thing I spoke about at half-time. “I’m never worried about our shots - even though I went off at them in that last bit as offensively we were getting rushes of blood to try and get on top when we needed to run it down - but that’s what we’re about. “It was just about team defense and just energy and I thought the energy - Alison Downie in particular in that third quarter - was excellent.”
WNBL - Fixtures
Season opener on the road By JARROD POTTER TWO months out and the WNBL season is shaping up to be a wall-to-wall bonanza. The fixture has been announced with incoming Rangers’ coach Larissa Anderson set to begin her WNBL coaching career on the road. Dandenong heads up to the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) to face the UC Capitals before Anderson’s first home game against WNBL newcomers South East Queensland and she was excited to see the season inch another step closer. “Absolutely does - the fixture is only bounced around once or twice - now that it’s released, and our first game is October 10 and it’s against Canberra, so it’s all becoming pretty surreal,” Anderson said. With the introduction of South East Queensland, the byes are gone from the schedule and Dandenong will have
to back up from October to March with only the December holiday break to help rest up and recover. The Rangers have to deal with four-double header rounds and a tough schedule consisting of two Perth trips and back-to-back trips to Queensland to face Townsville on Sunday 20 December before returning from the Christmas/New Year’s break to clash with (SEQ) South East Queensland on Saturday 2 January. The other unique feature of the schedule is a Monday night showdown against cross-town rivals Melbourne in an Australia Day eve battle from 7.30pm. Dandenong’s WNBL Roster has yet to be finalised with the eight signed Rangers - Sara Blicavs, Aimie Clydesdale, Steph Cumming, Alex Bunton, Lauren Scherf, Tenaya Phillips, Annalise Pickrel and Tegan Cunningham - having just begun their
training in preparation for the season opener and Dandenong’s first home game in Round 2 against SEQ. “Big week this week - started on court this week with the WNBL last night (Monday) - exciting to have them all in town, everyone was training except for Sara and Annalise,” Anderson said. “It’s definitely hitting home and getting exciting and once SEABL finishes we’ll be able to really focus on the WNBL season. “First home game in Round 2 will be a Friday nighter against SEQ and we’d love the support - we’re a young team that will play a quick, exciting brand of basketball and we can’t wait to get into the season.” WNBL memberships are available via the Dandenong website www.dandenongbasketball.com.au.
Dandenong will face the winner of Geelong and Nunawading in two weeks and Anderson implored the Rangers’ fans to get along and support their side in the conference final.

SPORT SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE Division 6 - Grand Final
Maiden glory all true grit By JARROD POTTER ONE year in the netball ranks was all it took for Dandenong Football Netball Club to claim a gutsy Southern league premiership. While Mount Waverley surged towards the final minutes - with fatigue and injury decimating the Redlegs’ goalers - Dandenong’s earlier brilliance through the second and third terms in particular saw them across the line to claim the Division-6 premiership 38-31 at the Springvale Netball Complex on Saturday. Dandenong Redlegs’ captain/ coach - and best on court medallist Mandi Hall - said it was a phenomenal feeling to hoist the cup in the maiden season of Dandenong netball. “Inaugural year for Dandenong with a bunch of new girls - it’s amazing, easy bunch of girls to work with though and they deserved this right from the beginning,” Hall said. The girls gritted their teeth despite the challenges of their first grand final together - especially once they lost star goaler Corrine Pegram to a serious ankle injury. “Having our vice-captain going
down in that last quarter - pretty badly as she’s waiting for an ambulance - it rattled us a bit and had to make some changes we weren’t ready for,” Hall said. “Already had one of our shooters out, but Beck (Smith) did well coming in and we held on and did it.” 2015 has been on nothing but an upwards trajectory for the Redlegs since joining the association ranks this year - with Dandenong finishing second during the home-andaway season only separated by percentage to Mount Waverley. Hall wanted to thank the club for backing her desire to bring in netball along with her girls who fought it out all year to truly earn their flag. “I want to thank the committee and the supporters - the footy boys - for supporting me and my decision to want netball at Dandenong,” Hall said. “It’s proved to be a winner, we’ve got a great bunch of girls and a bunch of new supporters… and I just want to thank the club for letting me roll with it… and for the girls - I love you, you’ve been amazing.” Hall wanted to thank the committee and sponsor ‘Melbourne Online Motors’ for their support.

Dandy’s best in the hunt HIGH-FLYING speccies, long bombs and superb goals - these are the trademarks of junior footy finals throughout Dandenong. With North Dandenong, Parkmore and Noble Park still in the hunt across the boys’ divisions, the best of our local footballers remain alive in the South East
Juniors football premiership hunt. Dandenong’s South East Juniors sides locked horns in preliminary finals around the region on Sunday morning. For more on how your Dandenong teams went in their finals, click onto dandenong.starcommunity.com.au on Monday morning.
IN HER ninth attempt at a metropolitan win, Kraken Soupy finally delivered the goods on Thursday evening at Sandown Park. Kraken Soupy was fast to begin from box one asserting her authority early. It was then a case of catch me if you can as Kraken Soupy extended her margin down the back straight, before going on to win by three lengths in a smart 29.55. Trainer, part owner and breeder Kevin Eyles was “pleased as punch” with the run. “I thought her run was excellent, she hasn’t been jumping that good lately… luckily she came out well last night (Thursday) and picked the right night to do it - I’m pleased as punch,” said Eyles. The win shines plenty of attention on Kraken Soupy,
something she thrives on back at home. “She’s a happy little dog, she just loves affection and that’s what she gets - we look after her in every way we can.” It was the third time Kraken Soupy has visited Sandown Park within the month, after Eyles was uncertain if she was able to run out a strong 515 metres. “Early in her career I took her to Sandown but it was just a bit too far for her. “For a while I didn’t think she was quite strong enough to race in Melbourne, now she’s a bit stronger she gets the trip fine.” The Kraken greyhounds have a large following, with all members of family owning their own Kraken hat. “Our family makes up the Eyles syndicate… we got the Kraken hats a little while back, everyone including the grandkids owns
Kraken Soupy and connections were thrilled to finally pick up a metropolitan win. Picture: SUPPLIED a Kraken hat - it’s all part of the fun.” Hailing from Murchison, a small town on the Goulburn River, Eyles has been involved in greyhound racing for 15 years and it all started with the transaction of a car.
“I had a car for sale and the fella who bought it talked me into forming a syndicate, before that I didn’t know anything about greyhounds - now we’re doing the lot, owning, training and breeding.”

What a difference a week can make By JARROD POTTER
that’s bounce back after a couple of ordinary weeks,” Fogarty said. “It was a great win, especially with Craig Anderson, Trent Robertson and Piva (Wright) out. “To get them back in - those three will definitely play - we’ll get some great stock back next week and we’ll hopefully go to Norwood - apart from Valenti - at full strength and there will be some tough decisions this week.” Forward turned champion defender Brett Dore had to exit the game at halftime on account of his wife going into labour. Noble Park will face Norwood at Bayswater Oval on Saturday from 2.10pm in a qualifying final. “We set ourselves at the start of the year… people thought it was a foregone conclusion, with who we picked up, but it’s a long year,” Fogarty said. “Injuries can occur and things happen… we were always confident we would make the finals and was a matter of where we finished… we aimed for top three and got it so here we go.”
TURNING around the inclement form of last week, Greater Dandenong’s finals-bound sides emphatically swept aside their lower ranked opponents in the last home-and-away round.
EFL DIVISION 1 - Round 18 EXCISING its wounds from two miserable losses back to back against high flying Balwyn and Norwood, Noble Park took out some frustrations in a 129-point demolition of lowly Lilydale. Mick Fogarty’s men would boot 24.16 (160) to turn around its errant form and enter the finals on a high note. Kyle Martin had a phenomenal day out. You can put the votes in his back pocket already as the Bulls’ midfielder/forward snagged 52 possessions, 11 marks and five goals in a best on ground performance. The ball ricocheted out of the Bulls’ back line at light-speed as Jackson Sketcher and the Kempermans Stewart and Bobby - ensured Lilydale would have scant possession. Also starring was Shayne Allan - as the forward found a heap of the pill in a seven-goal haul while Luke Cody and Jarrod Plymin (4 goals each) also savoured their time in the forward line. “We did what good sides do and
VAFA DIVISION 2 - Round 18 ST JOHN’S pasted Elsternwick to the wall in a 96-point whitewash. The JOCs - coming off their most heartwrenching loss of the year last week
against Ivanhoe - had champion performers across the board. Aaron Thornton (4 goals) finished the regular season on 75 goals to finish second behind Richmond Central’s Jake Munro in the league goal-kicking, while Gerald Ennis (3 goals) and Rhys Dyker (2 goals) were also prominent. The usual suspects Corey Ely, Glen Costas, Manny Jakwot and Jarrod Gaget were clear standouts in the heavenly performance. St John’s will travel to face Ivanhoe in a qualifying final on Saturday.
VAFA DIVISION 4 - Round 18 MASALA finished its inaugural Division 4 season on a high note, knocking off South Mornington by 16 points. Sam Freeman (5 goals) and Wayne McMahon were exceptional up forward alongside Zachary Kelly, Josh Kyle and Furkan Erkel. The Tigers finished the year in 10th with a 2-14 record.
SFL DIVISION 2 - Round 18 KEYSBOROUGH had its work cut out against lowly Heatherton, with the home side not shying away from the contest in an eventual 36-point Burra barrage. Newly anointed forward tandem
Kyle Martin was at peak performance in Noble Park’s 129-point win, snaring 52 possessions and booting five goals. 143418 Picture: JARROD POTTER Matt Collett (5 goals) and Davor Rajic (4 goals) swept aside the Heatherton defence while Ryan Goodes, Shane Dunn and Tim Bacic mopped things up through the middle of the park. The Burra will now battle Murrumbeena in a qualifying final on Saturday
In other Division-2 matches Doveton Eagles lost their final match of the season, a 106-point loss to Murrumbeena, while Springvale Districts capped off the year with a gutsy effort against Hampton - losing 5.8 (38) to 7.12 (54).
Fences no barrier to Piper By JARROD POTTER FOUR minutes… scarcely enough time to make a piece of toast, let alone savour all aspects of a TAC Cup debut, but if that’s all Dandenong Stingrays’ midfielder Reece Piper receives this year then he’s happy with it. Piper, 16, from Berwick, is officially the youngest player on any TAC Cup list this year, but in spite of his age he barrelled head-long into the side that took on Oakleigh Chargers, after an impressive senior debut with Berwick and some promising under-19’s form. After taking his jumper - number 53 - and getting into the thick of it early, Piper’s debut ground to a screening halt after a sickening collision with the boundary-line fence left him writhing in agony - requiring a trip to Dandenong Hospital by ambulance. He was cleared of major damage on Saturday evening as tests showed he had torn some of the ligaments in his back - utter relief considering how bad it could have been potentially with a broken back or fractured vertebrae. But just getting those four minutes on field and receiving his inaugural Dandenong jumper make the experience well worth it - despite its sudden end. One of Piper’s few possessions in a short, but memorable, TAC Cup debut. 143347 PICTURES COURTESY OF ROBERT WHITE

Burra out on a high note By JARROD POTTER

“I was quite emotional when I received my jumper off Blacky (Dandenong coach Craig Black) and my dad presenting it to me before the game,” Piper said. “Even though I only played four minutes, I can look back and say I’ve played a TAC game at 16.” Up until the accident, 2015 was a year of unending success for Piper as he earned a spot in Berwick’s senior line-up for Round 1 and continued to push on the door until the Stingrays’ couldn’t help but add him to the side. That small taste of TAC Cup football will drive Piper to get back into the ranks in 2016, while powering through his rehabilitation and hopefully returning to the field later this year. “I’ve just got to rest up now and keep my body healthy for next year,” he said. Piper wanted to thank the Stingrays for the opportunity and his family and friends for their support and being there for him throughout his football journey.
BACK-TO-BACK was not meant to be for Keysborough, as an inaugural Southern Football Netball League premiership slipped from its grasp with a 38-46 grand-final loss to Dingley. After switching to Southern (SFNL) this season, leaving the now defunct Casey Cardinia Football Netball League with a B-Grade premiership, the Burra was immediately thrust into the SFNL Division-1 competition - slotting in straight away at the top of the ladder. Keysborough had earned the week off, after defeating Dingley in the semi-final, but that result wouldn’t transpire again as the Dingoes learned the necessary lessons to best the Burra. Looking to earn back-to-
back flags at the senior level, the Burra flew out of the blocks in the SFNL decider but shot by shot Dingley returned fire and surged ahead. Facing former clubwoman Penny Byers-Timms, the Burra could not halt the steady flow of Dingoes’ goals, or accurately enough hit their own. A 25-32 half-time margin spelled trouble for Keysborough, but to the side’s credit the initiative never slackened even in the dying minutes as the lead ballooned back out to eight by the final siren. Laura Agius battled on in the arc while goal shooter Elise Boyd stepped up in absence of Keysborough’s main 2015 shooter Chloe Plumb who ruptured her ACL in the last minutes of the semi-final victory over Dingley. The gallant efforts of midcourt tandem Alana and Bree
Vieceli stood out alongside captain Sam Downie - who threw herself around the backhalf to try and stem the Dingley attack. “I think we maybe chose the wrong options down the court,” Downie said. “They applied some really good pressure and we just dropped it off and lost our run. “Guess it also came down to our goals as well - made a few and the rebounds were there, but it’s got to be the first one in.” Downie thought the Burra’s first year in the new league had been a strong one and the result gives them plenty of motivation heading towards 2016. “It’s been good for us - really competitive competition so hopefully next season we can take it.”
