Over the limit

Spring is the thing

FORMER Olympian and Noosa Today columnist Benny Pike has been charged with drink-driving after the 64-year-old allegedly returned a reading more than three times the limit. Local media reports said Mr Pike had enjoyed a late night out in Maroochydore before getting behind the wheel and driving to a service station in Marcoola to get food last week. When he pulled up, a group of young people told Mr Pike he shouldn’t be driving and called the police. Mr Pike allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of .180 per cent and has since apologised saying that his mother being unwell and losing his job from the Palmer Coolum Resort in March had caused him to “spiral”. “I’ve been doing all the right things, but then I got in a spiral of being without work, stress and depressed,” he said in a local media report. “I am seeking medical advice, but I’m not in a good space and I haven’t been for some time.” The drink-driving charge is the seventh charge for Mr Pike since 1987, with his last drink-driving offence eight and a half years ago. Mr Pike has surrendered his licence and a court date is yet to be set. For help with alcohol visit www. drinkwise.org.au and for help with stress and depression visit www.beyondblue.org.au

SPRING has come early to Noosa, with locals and visitors making the most of warm winter weather by hitting the beach and cooling off. Most of the South East Queensland region is enjoying above average temperatures and summer-like storms, with temperatures expected to stay in the mid to high twenties for at least a week. Today (Thursday) should see the temperature reach 25 degrees with a 40 per cent chance of much-needed rain this afternoon.

On the wrong track By JOELENE OGLE LOCAL resident Richard Hack has questioned council’s decision to seal Dr Pages Road in Kin Kin, which is expected to cost $4.7 million. The road has been described by council as the “missing link” in the hinterland and when sealed it will

provide an alternate route between Tewantin and Kin Kin. Mr Hack, son of former Noosa banana grower Roger Hack, said while he was sure the sealing of the country road would be welcomed by the Kin Kin community, there were more important infrastructure issues council could have spent the money on.

“We have bridges that have been declared in need of urgent works, while the Munna Point bridge was delayed for many years with the concrete cancer only being addressed now,” he said. “Council haven’t completed all their planned capital works for the 2014-’15 budget and now they will

spend $4.7 million sealing a road into a country town. “There is a multitude of other places throughout the shire that are more desperately in need of repair.” Mr Hack said roads such as Beckmans Road, where daily commuters were growing more frustrated with the large amounts of traffic, was one

Business revolution in the offing By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA needs a business revolution, according to local business owner and investor Ralph Rogers. Mr Rogers recently opened the Acres home and garden centre on Gibson Road, Noosaville, and said while he wanted to create a unique, out-of-the-box retail centre for Noosa, he also went to great lengths to ensure all businesses opened within the centre were designed to give young people a go. “I fear if we don’t do something that encourages young people to get into business, we will end up with a generation of working poor,” he said. “A lot of young people in Noosa are qualified and have dreams and aspirations but they can’t get work in the area they want to live in. “That’s horrible. We’ll end up with a town of haves and have-nots. I think that is sad.” Mr Rogers said the best way to combat the issue was to encourage young people to follow their business dream and provide affordable commercial spaces for them to thrive. Mr Rogers, who also owns Ecom Noosa, said he had offered cheap rent to a number of start-up businesses to help encourage young people to get a head start.

“Between Ecom Noosa and Acres, we now have 19 businesses, the majority of which are new, with 70 employees and business owners,” he said. One such young business owner is Cailla Nasmyth, who aged in her twenties owns the fashion store Queen of Archers within the Acres building. Cailla, who comes from a background in hospitality, said she saw a gap in the market for a more individual retail shopping experience tailored to Noosa. “I love Noosa and I wanted to offer my customers a unique service from a local,” she said. “Our clothing is suited to the environment here, with most labels from Byron Bay. It’s easy-to-wear fashion made from cotton and rayon, so it breathes and is designed for all ages.” Cailla said it was daunting to start up her business and while she still worked a second job to make ends meet, it was with thanks to Mr Rogers she was able to follow her dream. “A business is something I’ve been working towards for my whole working life,” she said. “I’ve been striving to one day have my own business and have something of my own.” Cailla said the commercial rents in Noosa were the biggest hurdle in the journey to

COUNCIL is warning dog owners to control their pets or face prosecution following a spate of dog attacks in the past week. Acting Local Laws manager Phil Amson says council took a hard line on dog attacks, recently prosecuting three people over separate incidents. Dog owners must take steps to reduce the possibility of their pet attacking animals or children, he said. “It’s responsible pet ownership, and it can be as simple as making sure you close your gate to keep the dog from wandering the street, or by keeping it on a leash around other animals or people," he said. On Wednesday, a local man was fined $1200 in Noosa Magistrates' Court for a dog attack in which a man was injured at Sunshine Beach late last year. As well as the fine, he was also ordered to pay professional and court costs. In April, a woman was fined $500 after her

dog attacked an animal at Sunshine Beach, while a Noosa Heads man received a $1000 fine for a dog attack on an elderly woman at Noosaville in December 2014. “These results reflect council’s commitment to enforcing responsible pet ownership and the seriousness with which the court deals with dog attacks," Mr Amson said. Council is investigating eight further dog attacks reported in the past week. “It is eight too many," Mr Amson said. “It seems every year we go through a period where owners become complacent and we have a series of attacks. Complacency or being inattentive to your dog is no defence in legal proceedings. Dangerous dogs have no place in our community, and it is every dog owner’s responsibility to ensure their animal does not pose a risk to other people or animals." Dog owners who let their pets wander also face fines in excess of $230, plus impoundment charges.

Community jury's verdict in on organic waste By JOLENE OGLE AFTER five months of deliberations, Noosa’s inaugural Community Jury has delivered their verdict on Noosa’s organic waste. The jury’s nine recommendations were presented to Noosa Council at Monday’s (24 August) General Committee meeting, outlining proposed changes for how locals deal with their household waste. The report to the council said the Jury’s recommendations were based on a vision of Noosa Shire reducing the amount of organic waste sent to landfill by 100 per cent by 2030. The recommendations include the expansion of Noosa’s existing threebin system to introduce mandatory weekly organic collections for resi-

dential areas, with mandatory green waste collection in 2015/'16, at minimal cost to ratepayers. Organic waste will include food scraps such as fruit and vegetables, meat and fish scraps including bones and egg shells, coffee grinds and tea bags, animal droppings, plus grass clippings and leaves; all of which will be placed in the green-top bins currently used for garden waste only. The jury also recommended moving to fortnightly collection of general waste bins once the organic collection has taken effect, as well as constructing a composting facility at a suitable site to turn the organic waste into high-grade useable compost, and design and implement a “grassroots, long-term education and awareness” campaign to help residents understand the benefits of

organic waste management. Rewarding excellent waste management by residents and monitoring compliance with the new waste management system are also part of the recommendation. The jury also want to “Ban the Bag”, urging local businesses to use biodegradable bags by 2017, as well as direct large producers to target 100 per cent diversion of organic waste from landfill by 2030. The group of 24 Noosa ratepayers said the recommendations were based on Noosa becoming a leader in organic waste management and outlined their vision for the future. “In 2030, Noosa’s organic waste is no longer sent to landfill,” the report said. “It is too valuable to be wasted.

Instead, large quantities of nutrientrich materials are collected from Noosa’s residents and businesses and brought to the award-winning facility at Eumundi Road where it is converted into high-grade compost. “In our rural areas, residents will continue the good work they were doing back in 2015, targeting 100 per cent of organic waste is reused in home composting facilities and worm farms.” The jury highlighted the need for council to be “upfront” with residents about the costs and benefits of the new waste management plan, should it be implemented. “Council’s should clearly explain the costs and benefits of taking action to minimise organic waste,” the Jury report said. “Research has shown citizens of-

ten overestimate costs because they do not know how much waste management costs. As a result, they are more sensitive to price changes than if they had a more accurate estimation. “Research has also shown citizens will comply with new systems if the importance is explained to them, they are satisfied the organic waste is being treated appropriately and they will benefit financially in the long run.” The second Community Jury will now discuss the Noosa River and how Noosa Council can manage it, with their first meeting held on Monday 24 August. FOR the Varty family, a new car couldn’t have come at a better time, especially one that is free. The Vartys are the lucky winners of the St Thomas More raffle held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the school’s fete, and drove away from Cricks Noosa in a brand new Nissan MY15 ST Micra last week. Peter and Penn Varty, who live in Black

Mountain with their five children, said their work car was just about to die, so the win is perfectly timed. “The kids go to three different schools, so we drive a lot,” Penn said. “Our run around car was just about to die, so this is great.” Baeli, 10, Ella-Jade, 7, Lilly, 6, and Chace, 4, said the car was great and couldn’t wait to jump in and have a look around. The eldest Varty child, Rylie, 13, would

have to wait until after school finished. St Thomas More principal Patrick Colley said the raffle was well received with over 14,000 tickets sold. Second prize was won by David Jones who will ride away on an Electra cruiser bike, thanks to Jeremy Peterson of Venture Cycles.

Friends help celebrate garden silver MAYOR Noel Playford opened the Noosa Botanic Gardens 25 years ago and was back last week to celebrate the garden’s 25th birthday. The birthday celebrations, organised and hosted by the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens (FoNBG), were held in the garden’s amphitheatre on Wednesday 19 August, and were designed to celebrate the hard work of the park’s volunteers and council staff who keep the gardens looking beautiful all year. It was a great community celebration of a public space built by the community 25 years ago. Lake Macdonald resident Ida Duncan began the push for the gardens, urging locals to contribute plants and labour, local businesses to offer support and even the local brickworks supplied time, labour and materials to help build the amphitheatre, kindly designed by local artist and designer Bill McKay. The FoNBG began their work within the garden more than four years ago, contributing not only labour but also funds they raised through community activities. The next planned community initiative is the Plant Fair for Father’s Day at the Botanic Gardens on Sunday 6 September from 9am to 3pm, with a huge range of plants and advice on offer for the budding gardener. Bring Dad along to pick out some plants and help support the Noosa Botanic Gardens.

Slip-sliding on our roads By JOLENE OGLE IT was a bruising day on Noosa roads last Thursday with two separate car crashes in a matter of hours. The accidents came as the inaugural Queensland Road Safety Week entered the final days of the driver safety campaign. About 8.15am on Thursday 20 August, traffic on the Sunshine Motorway was brought to a standstill when a Subaru SUV and a station wagon crashed north-bound at the Peregian Springs roundabout. A 23-year-old male and a 40-year-old female were freed from the wreckage and taken to Nambour hospital in a stable condition. Only hours later, about 2pm, a black SUV skidded out of control on Ernest Street, Tewantin, and crashed into a pole before coming to a stop in the stormwater drain. The female driver was shaken but uninjured. The crashes came as the Queensland Police Service called for locals to speak up for road safety and to become directly involved in making local roads safer for everyone. As part of Queensland

This driver is lucky to be uninjured after losing control in the rain while driving on Ernest Road, Thursday 20 August, about 2pm. Road Safety Week, which ended on Friday, local police teamed up to target drunk and drug drivers, unregistered vehicles and unlicensed driving. Noosa Heads Police ran a shut-down operation on the Bruce Highway near Federal last Wednesday night in conjunction with the Pomona, Cooroy and Eumundi police, the Nambour and Gympie road policing units, as well as Sunshine Coast detectives and the Department of Main Roads. Noosa Heads Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said the operation was a great team effort with more than 360 drivers tested for drunk-driving. Four people will face court charged with offences such as drink-driving, drug possession

and driving unlicensed, while three drivers returned positive tests for illegal drugs. Sixteen tickets were issued for speeding and driving defected vehicles, while two cars were impounded; one for seven days while the other has been forfeited to the crown. One driver was issued with a fatigue warning and 14 defect notices were given to heavy vehicles including trucks. Snr Sgt McReight said the policing teams were greatly assisted by the local SES crews who helped with lighting. The police planned another shut-down of a major coast road last Thursday night targetting speeding, drink driving and other traffic offences.

On the wrong track From page 1 “I can understand spending $4.7 million to seal a road into a country town if the planned capital works were finished,” Mr Hack said. “But they’re not.” Mr Hack also said the approval of the funds to seal Dr Pages Road should have seen Mayor Noel Playford declare a conflict of interest at the special 2015-’16 council budget meeting on 29 June. “One of the roads off Dr Pages Road is named Playfords Road and one of his family members owns one of only two stores in the main street, the other business being the pub,” he said. “Mayor Playford should have made mention of his interest and history with the town before voting on the budget that approved the spending of funds to seal the road.” Noosa Today asked Noosa Council if the mayor needed to declare a conflict of interest, but council declined to comment. According to the Local Government Act 2009 (section 173), a conflict of interest exists between a “councillor’s personal interests and the public interest” and must be declared when the conflict “might lead to a decision that is contrary to the public interest” and a conflict can be real or perceived. The Act (section 172) also states a councillor has a “material personal interest” in a matter before council if a councillor, spouse of councillor, parent, child, sibling of the councillor or partner of the councillor stands to gain a benefit, or suffer a loss, “depending on the outcome of the consideration of the matter at the meeting”.

Noosa’s inaugural Community Jury has been deemed a success.

It’s official: jury is in By JOLENE OGLE THE pilot Noosa Community Jury has been deemed a success by council staff, with a report to the planning and organisation committee on Tuesday (18 August) outlining the jury’s achievements. The report said the jury reached a consensus on a “difficult and complex” topic and delivered a report with a full set of recommendations that all jury members stood by, and the trial received “overwhelmingly positive” feedback from the jurors. A survey of the jurors’ experience was conducted by a PHD research student from USC and

found an overwhelming majority of jurors felt their participation had increased their trust in Noosa Council as a collaborative and engaged council, a majority of jurors thought they were provided with comprehensive information about waste management and council processes to inform their decisionmaking, plus a majority thought the jury was a positive initiative. Some of the individual feedback included comments such as “I would sum up the experience as rewarding”, and “I commend Noosa Council for this initiative”. One response read: “I found being a member of the first Noosa jury an interesting learning expe-

rience. The guest speakers were informative and the whole process was very well-organised.” The report also said there was “room for improvement” when it came to implementing the next community jury. Councillor feedback included the recommendation to better educate the community about the organic waste issue, encourage greater community interest in the topic and more widely communicate the jury’s findings as a “ground-breaking and worth sharing process”. The report made a number of recommendations for improvement including advising staff “pa-

tience is required” as it can take several months for jurors to digest the large amounts of information they receive, as well as encouraging the public to attend the community jury meetings. The second community jury has been chosen and the 24 jury members will have their first meeting on 22 August at Noosa Council chambers, Pelican Street, Tewantin. The public is welcome to attend as the group begin five months developing recommendations as to how Noosa River can be better managed, the role council should play and the resources it should apply.

Coast’s cavalcade of sport FOR the past 48 years the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation has helped acknowledge the achievements of local athletes through its highly successful and one-of-a-kind Sport Star of the Year awards. Palmwoods painter Tony Cash - the reigning National and South Seas Flyweight Boxing Champion scored the first honour in 1968. He wasn’t the only national titleholder in the running: Waterski kingpin Greg Rogerson and life-saving icon Hayden Kenny and Vigoro whiz Dell Carr were among the finalists. 1989 saw the first change with a new committee, whose first move was to include a junior category - and with great delight lanky 17-year-old Clint Robinson took it out, which would just be one of many in his glit-

Benny’s

beat BENNY PIKE

tering career. The Olympic Champion is presently on the coaching staff at Sunshine Beach Surf Club, a major coup. Ten years later, it was decided to move with the times and become incorporated, and change the name and branding to Advance Sports and again add new categories - Coach, Team, Administrator and Event of the Year were put in place to widen the opportunities to congratulate people who excelled in their chosen fields. It really only followed the trend

that was becoming evident with the high calibre of events that were starting up across the Coast. The development and growth of the Sunshine Coast Uni was another pressing factor that encouraged the committee to make these changes. More high class sporting facilities have increased the development and lift the standard of competition and performance of both athlete, team, coach and administrator. During this time, the Sports Federation has been steadfast on its 1968 mission statement to foster and promote sport on the Sunshine Coast. It has never altered, and hopefully never will, and I suppose the old saying ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ says it all.

It is estimated that during this time the federation has invested just over $2 million into the local sporting community. Other than expenses, the money has gone into fostering and promoting local sport. The organisation has had some terrific and loyal sponsors over the years, and raised funds with many and varied events/raffles/auctions/grants. Last Friday, there another milestone with the announcement of annual Sports Industry Awards for Clubs/Organisations, which now covers the whole gamut from the fields to the clubhouse. These awards clearly make the federation one of a kind in Queensland, and always loyal to its beliefs.

To back this up, over the past four weeks and forward over the next six weeks, there has and will be 40 Coast athletes representing Australia - some 21 swimmers at the Russian World Titles, Jordan Mercer in the Aussie Lifesaving squad, Tewantin's Sam Cameron-Hands ready to punch on at World Youth Titles, Larissa Crummer set for a glorious career with the Matildas, softballer Jocelyn McCallum back in the National Team, Belli Park cyclist Shari Gillow riding on the world circuit. DESPITE all the recent improvements in vehicle safety and road design, Queensland roads are still a place of risk for you and your family. Rural Fire Brigades in certain areas of the state can be called upon to assist at Road Crash Rescues (RCR). This means that we support the First Responders at the accident scene. So naturally having the skills and knowledge of the equipment and techniques to remove occupants quickly and safely from vehicles involved in serious road crashes, is an essential part of our training tool box. While Ambulance services treat and transport the injured, they are not equipped to extricate victims from crash scenes. RCR Fire crews administer primary first aid, stabilise both vehicles and casualties, and then remove them for further medical attention if necessary, using the latest technology in hydraulic rescue equipment, often referred to as the 'jaws of life'. Recently a group of volunteers from the Doonan Brigade accompanied by our colleagues from surrounding brigades including Eumundi, attended a RCR training session at Caloundra Fire Station. The training course had a very large emphasis on safety and provided personnel with skills to assist in various types of emergencies on our local roads. Various road accident rescue equipment and procedures were covered, which include; vehicle construction, RCR rescue equipment, managing injuries at the incident scene and vehicle stabilisation, airbag management, to name but a few.

In small groups, we were all given a fairly modern car to stabilise, and using all the RCR equipment including the cutting gear, were guided through the procedure to rescue someone trapped in a vehicle. This was total immersion training and very hands on. The gear is both heavy and very dangerous (to both the user and the person being rescued), so safety was paramount. No one came away without a sense of achievement and without breaking into a sweat! All members of the Brigade who attended thought the training was excellent and went away armed with the knowledge that if called upon could ably assist RCR crews.

We would sincerely like to thank Mark Campbell and all his team at Caloundra for the excellent hands on training, hospitality and efforts. On a final note, please drive responsibly and safely (it’s not a race out there) and hopefully our training will not be needed!

COUNCIL is reminding residents new dog registration charges take effect this year with the new structure designed to reward pensioners with free registration if they de-sex their dogs. According to Council, dog owners will generally pay less if their pet is de-sexed but Council will no longer offer a discount for dogs that are micro-chipped, to reflect changes in state law. This means that most dog owners will pay $30 a year. Local laws manager Phil Amson said it is in all dog owner’s interest to microchip their pets to help reunite them if the dog gets lost. “As it is now a legal requirement for dogs to be microchipped, Council will no longer offer a discount as an incentive to comply with a law,” he said. “Registration for a de-sexed dog is $30, or free with a pensioner discount. That compares with $140 to register a dog that has not been de-sexed or $115 with the concession.” Mr Amson praised Noosa residents for de-sexing their pets, with the Shire recording one of the highest de-sexing rates in Queensland. Council will begin mailing out annual registration renewal forms from 1 September with the regulated dog registration to

Registering de-sexed pups will be free for pensioners under Noosa Council's new fee structure. rise from $257 to $400 per year. Mr Amson said the second highest number of calls received by Council from the public was about dogs and responding to them was both time consuming and costly. “In July, for example, local laws officers spent more than 450 hours dealing with stray dogs, following up complaints about barking dogs, investigating dog attacks and other animal management activities,” he said. Council believes the new fee structure is fair and will recoup most of the costs of the service that Council provides. Under the Animal Management Act Council must spend all income from registration fees on animal management activities.

Club for our people flags people

RON LANE

TO USE the expression, by the community for the community, is I think, a good way of describing the Citizens Memorial Club branch, of the Tewantin Noosa RSL and Citizens Memorial Club. On 8 June 1979 when Sir Thomas Hiley K.B.E. opened the first of the major extensions of the RSL he said, “When it comes to national purpose and putting Australia first, the RSL stands like a beacon.’’ Then in 1995 the club became the RSL Citizens and Memorial Incorporated, and in 1996 the club expanded into the now existing building. Now with the Citizens Memorial Club firmly entrenched within our community, the full meaning of these words really hits home. Under the control of a nine- person board of directors, the structure gives a good indication as to their success. The board consists of a chairman John Favell OAM, secretary William Nock, treasurer Steve Drake and six other directors Barry Bridger, Dean Harlow, John Coert, Bruce Huntington, Peter Elmslie and William Kippen. To ensure that the workload is evenly distributed, the board is supported by five sub committees with each being chaired by a member of the board of directors. All personnel are volunteers and some like Favell, Bridger, Harlow and Huntington have many years of loyal and dedicated service to their credit - John Favell (Finance), Barry Bridger (Building),

Dean Harlow (Community Support), Bruce Huntington (Membership) and John Coert (Courtesy). The day-to-day running of the Citizens Club, which consists of the restaurant bar and pokies is under the control of the chief executive officer Phil Stephenson. With a membership of 450 ex-servicemen, 10,200 citizens and a staff of 85 plus 5 Epic Staff, harmony is indeed a major factor. As with all successful clubs, there are also smaller groups who work on the side and give tremendous help to the board and sub committees. In this case, they have the War Widows, Womens Auxiliary, Legacy, Laurel Club and also the Tewantin Noosa RAAF Association. “We have just finished a very successful year, and our figures as confirmed by the auditors, gives a true indication as to our success,” John Favell said. “Our CEO Phil Stephenson has taken the club from strength to strength with his wealth of knowledge and managerial experience. He is supported by a team of loyal and diligent managers and hardworking staff which makes this club the success that it is.” Further to this, Favell said, “As always, the community is one of the clubs major priorities and it did not disappoint again this year.” For example, the figures for the 2014/'15 financial year show the club contributed $413,000 in cash and kind; up nearly $62,000 on last year. However, if we address the figures for the last six years the club has given over $2 million in cash and kind and this is without a doubt one of the best indications as to their

ongoing commitment to the community. The hard work of the staff and the financial contribution to the community is indeed a good interpretation of the expression by the people for the people. When one reads through the names of just some of the staff, it is indeed very obvious that they are definitely our people. Take for example Kerin Robertson, the gaming manager. Affectionately known to one and all as Skeeta, Kerin joined the staff back in 1984. “In those days all that we had was that room,” she said pointing to what is now known as the Diggers Bar. “That was our bar and where the steps are now was the end wall. It seems like 100 years ago,” she said with a laugh, “but boy we have come a long way since then.” Then there is Lindy McAskill, reception supervisor. “I have been here some 21 years and it has been great.” she said. “The feeling within the club is good.” Another staffer, Julie Plant administration manager indeed has a strong local community connection. It was her father, John, who has the honour of being the foundation senior coach of the Noosa Pirates

Lynn McClelland and Rachel Jarvis in the Diggers Bar.

Rugby League Club. The section of the club known as the Diggers Bar and TAB is under the management of Lynn McClelland. This lady is yet another example of local loyalty for it is now 15 years since Lynn started in the Bistro of the club, doing split shifts. “It is a great place to work,” said Lynn, “a nice family feeling. Our bar is a meeting place for a lot of the old locals who enjoy telling stories about the old days. We also cater for sporting fraternity in this section, and as such the bar is well supported. “You should have been here for the big Mayweather vs Pacquiao

World Title fight”, she said shaking her head. “You couldn’t move. They were standing in the stairway trying to get in. To see our local people supporting us like that makes it all worthwhile. It was billed as one of the biggest sporting events of the decade; and the Diggers Club played host for the screening.” The loyalty and work attitude of the staff of the Tewantin Noosa RSL and Citizens Memorial Club is what makes the ongoing assistance of needy children such as these a possibility. Let there be no doubt, the Citizens Club is staffed by our people for our people.

Local seniors enjoyed morning tea at the Noosa Leisure Centre.

Celebrations marked with cuppa and cake

WHAT better way to celebrate a life well lived than with coffee and cake with friends? THE Noosa Leisure Centre and Noosa Aquatic Centre celebrated Seniors Week last week by holding morning teas for their senior members. The Noosa Aquatic Centre members celebrated on Wednesday 19 August with coffee and cake supplied by Damien Smith and the team at Nourish Cafe, while the members of Noosa Leisure Centre enjoyed a morning tea on Thursday 20 August.

Sport and recreational facilities marketing officer Donna Frey said there was a great representation of members at the morning tea and it was a wonderful way to thank the centre’s members for their support. “We had members from indoor bowls, group fitness seniors classes, badminton and table tennis represented which was a wonderful spread of seniors enjoying activities at Noosa

Leisure Centre,” she said. Seniors Week is an opportunity for locals of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contribution of older people. Seniors Week aims to facilitate community participation and activity by older people and enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.

Jean Bosanko, Jo Westbury, Karen Rogers, Hazel Cosgrove and Chris Garland enjoy coffee and cake with Nourish Cafe's Damien Smith and Hannah Isles at the Noosa Aquatic Centre.

Library’s sweet treat

Friends of the Noosaville Library volunteer Carolyn Patinniot, far left, with library members at the Seniors Week morning tea.

A BIG chocolate mud cake topped with curls of Belgian chocolate was cut and shared with Noosa Library members along with a cup of tea or coffee to celebrate Seniors Week. Friends of the Noosaville Library hosted the event and volunteers provided visitors to the Library with information about the many community services the library offered. Among the services are adult literacy classes where qualified tutors assist those who wish to improve their spoken English skills in both one-on-one situations and in relaxed groups where English can be practised and new friendships developed. The service attracts a wide range of supporters from those who have migrated from distant countries to Australians who simply

wish to express themselves in a more articulate or succinct way. A very popular activity which the volunteers provide is helping library members research their family histories. Bookings are required for these sessions and members are offered the opportunity to get started on their research or solve some annoying mystery connected with their forebears. Other areas in which volunteers support the library include organising Book Clubs which, for a modest fee, can get sets of eight books each month - and home library services where books are chosen and delivered to people who are unable to attend the library in person.

LETTERS It's an emergency IF ONLY Bronwyn Bishop had used an emergency services helicopter, she could have claimed the cost as a donation. We know that’s being devious, but eh what’s new with politicians? E.Wright, Sunrise Beach.

Just one tree I WOULD like to know why does the Noosa Council care more about one tree then they do about solar power. There’s a tree on council property that’s shading where I need solar panels but they bluntly refuse to cut down a healthy tree for solar panels. Wouldn’t it be better for the environment to cut down one tree and replace it with six or more other trees somewhere else and to put in solar panels which is good for the environment. The government is giving out rebates for solar power and the Noosa Council don’t think that it's important. They need to get together to talk about what’s more important for the environment. Ellen Joy, Noosaville.

No interest like self-interest THERE are a lot of negative self-interested letters with regards to the expansion of Noosa Civic. What are the positive outcomes for the total Noosa Council area, not just the coastal strip of Noosa? Expansion of Civic will bring immediate increased job opportunities for our 14,800 young people 24 years and under, and for the unemployed of our population, approximately 3,000. The addition of full-line Aldi and Target stores will be a positive in attracting the large population in the Sunshine Coast area of Peregian Springs, Coolum, across to Eumundi. It is interesting to note that the Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre sees the Civic expansion as a threat; this is proof positive that Civic with its expansion will attract additional business from the northern end of the Sunshine Coast. The expansion will make it easier for the

residents in Cooroy, Boreen Point, Pomona, Kin Kin, along with local residents to have access to a major shopping centre. The influence of new customers will flow over to our commercial area bounded by Civic, Bunnings, the medical centre, and our motor vehicle precinct making this area the key business area for the North Sunshine Coast, and the Noosa Council area. Will the expansion of Civic have an effect on our beaches, our national parks, that draw people to Noosa? The answer is no. The expansion will increase job opportunities, increase business for our commercial area that will benefit the total business community of Noosa into the future, and make Noosa a place of choice not only for tourism but a place to conduct business. The Noosa Council should really weigh up the benefits, and be careful that they are not swayed by a lot of negative self-interest by some of our business community. John Cox, Noosaville.

What about the kids? WHILE the new Noosa Council must be commended for their efforts so far, one area in which they are really not achieving a pass mark is with our children’s playground facili-

ties. The new equipment at Pirate Park, Noosaville demonstrates as much, showing how poor the planning and lack of thought/expertise that has gone into our local playgrounds has been. You only have to visit the park on any weekday or weekend and witness the huge number of kids and families struggling to enjoy the park to realise how our shire is lacking quality playgrounds for our kids and how high the demand is. The new equipment is far too small and hopelessly designed for different age groups and abilities. A lawsuit waiting to happen I would suggest. That council would build such a plastic, artificial and wholly inadequate facility at great cost beggars belief. There are so many examples of appropriate age specific playgrounds in south-east Queensland that one can only wonder about the competency of those in charge of these areas in our council. The Tewantin splash park is another example of the poor planning and infrastructure development within council and the ongoing cost to ratepayers seems to be accepted rather than questioned. Who is responsible for this and why are they not accountable? A trip to Cairns would demonstrate how to build a combination of splash park/playground that would enhance our town (Gympie Terrace especially) as a child-friendly tourist destination. There are so many really poor playgrounds in our area that maybe our council should look at replacing those responsible with some new knowledge-

THE Wildflower Festival is in full bloom and on Tuesday tour guides Bob Tooth, Sonia MacDonald and Robert Price took a group of curious locals on a walk to discover the wonders of the wallum. More than 15 people enjoyed the guided tour through the Girraween Nature Reserve, organised by the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association. NICA project and member support officer Wendy May said it was wonderful to have volunteers with the time and knowledge to give to members of the public who want to learn about their environments and Noosa’s native plants. “We are so lucky,” she said. On Monday, locals were treated to a guided walk through Noosa National Park, and on Thursday (today) locals can join Bob for a walk through the wildflowers, woodlands and wallum heath on the Noosa North Shore, including the Arthur Harold Nature Reserve. Wendy said the program was designed to help foster environmental stewardship along with developing admiration and respect for the environment.

I READ with amazement the current local newspaper articles on the dilemma of our Noosa Council officers at the non-compliance of certain retailers occupying tenancies within the industrial estate in Noosaville and what to do with them. Do they move them, fine them, or close them down? It must be obvious to those officers and the tenants that prior to those tenants occupation of the said locations such as Belmondos and lately Noosa Kitchen Shed (retailers) that some council departments and staff officers were aware of the rules applying to the estate and not only approved their applications for such tenancies, but collected the required council fees and charges levied upon them, and to make sure they complied inspected those premises to approve the operation therein. What to do - surely you can’t move those businesses that have been there for years. No doubt those worried businesspeople are watching for the result and councillors' difficult decisions for their future. Garry Boyle, Pomona.

Tour guides Bob Tooth, Sonia MacDonald and Robert Price lead a group through the Girraween Nature Reserve on Tuesday 25 August.

Quartet will premier at the Noosa Arts Theatre on Friday 11 September. Picture: YANNI VAN ZIJL

16 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 27 August, 2015

NOOSA Arts Theatre is proud to present their next production, Quartet, which will open on Friday 11 September. Quartet takes the audience to Beecham House, an English countryside estate where the world’s most famous musicians and singers come to enjoy their sunset years. Beecham House is abuzz with the rumour circling the corridors the home is soon to welcome a new resident. Word is, it’s a “star”. Quartet is a sentimental, sweet comedy written by Sir Ronald Harwood, whose The Dresser remains one of the best plays ever written about the theatre. Directed by Jane Rivers, Quartet is a wickedly comedic play about redefining old age and growing old with hope, demonstrating how art illuminates life and the human spirit remains un-

dimmed even as the brightest stars start to fade. A cut price preview will be held on Thursday 10 September with tickets only $22, with opening night on 11 September at 7.30pm. Evening shows will be held on 12, 17, 18 and 19 September from 7.30pm and matinees will be held on 13 September and 19 September from 1pm. Tickets are available now at $31 for adults, $27 for concession, $25 for a group and $22 for children. A special performance will be held on 16 September to help raise funds for Molly’s Song with all tickets $37 including supper at interval. To book, phone 5449 9343, visit www.noosaartstheatre.org.au or drop into the theatre at 163 Weyba Road, Noosaville, from Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 2pm. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Queenslanders check their skin regularly for any changes - if skin cancer is detected early, there’s a greater chance of survival. “If Queenslanders notice a new spot or lesion, or an existing spot or lesion change in shape, colour or size, they should visit their GP immediately.” The study compared melanoma survival between males and females in Queensland (28,979 patients) and the United States (57,402 patients) between 1995 to 2008 by stage and age groups. “In order to improve your diet quality, people need to cut back on the consumption of junk food, and start to focus on eating smaller portions. “They also need to be more mindful of every bite they take by eating more slowly and consciously." How do you measure up? The CSIRO Healthy Diet Score is a free 15-minute online assessment which evaluates diet quality and identifies areas of improvement. “The online assessment provides Australians with a simple and trusted way of selfassessing the quality of their diet and how they compare to others of the same age, gender, generation, profession as well as people from the same state and across the country," Professor Noakes said. “We would encourage people to take the test regularly to ensure they are improving their eating behaviour and overall health and wellbeing.” The online assessment can be completed at www.csirodietscore.com

of the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, the results were concerning. “The scores were fairly unflattering across all respondents," Professor Noakes said. “If we were handing out report cards for diet quality - Australia would only get a C. While many people scored highly in categories such as water intake and the variety of foods consumed, there is certainly lots of room for improvement in other areas." Discretionary or junk foods are foods and drinks that are high in sugar, saturated fats and/or alcohol and low in essential nutrients. Of the survey responders, the average score received for the discretionary foods category was only 37/100. “What we’re finding is people are having larger portions of junk food, more often," Professor Noakes said. “This type of food is no longer just an indulgence, it’s become mainstream and Australians are eating it each and every day.

AUSTRALIAN diets aren’t making the grade with an addiction to junk food largely to blame, according to findings from the CSIRO Healthy Diet Score Survey. The country’s diet quality was given a rating of 61 on a 100-point scale when assessed using the CSIRO Healthy Diet Score - a scientific survey which assesses people’s diet quality against the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Discretionary food, or junk food, intake was found to be three-times higher than the recommended daily limit. Based on the survey results, Australians eat the equivalent of 32kg of chocolate each year. More than 40,000 people took part in the survey, which evaluated a person’s diet based on variety, frequency and quantity of the essential food groups as well as individual attributes such as age and gender. According to Professor Manny Noakes, CSIRO Research Director for Nutrition and Health and the co-author

Among men, 1990 are diagnosed and 210 die each year. Ms Clift urged all Queenslanders to protect and check their skin to reduce their risk of skin cancer. “Sun protection is vital for Queenslanders of all ages,” he said. “Queenslanders should Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide when the UV Index is three or above to reduce their risk. “It’s also imperative that

According to new statistics, we're making poor food choices.

WOMEN are more likely than men to survive a melanoma diagnosis - regardless of the stage of the tumour at diagnosis, new research shows. The joint study by the University of Queensland, the Cancer Council Queensland and QIMR Berghofer found survival rates were higher for females for nearly all tumour stages, including both thin and thick invasive melanomas. But the study also found the advantage was weaker for women aged under 45. Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said more research was needed to understand why women’s survival rates were higher than men’s. “Our research shows the survival differences for women aren’t just present with thick melanoma, but also stage one melanoma - the most commonly diagnosed,” Ms Clift said. “The data indicates there may be an underlying biological mechanism, influenced by age, which exists in females from the very early stages of the disease. “Further studies are needed to explore the role of sex hor-

Spring marches into Noosa Buyer attention is coming into focus on the Noosa market as the spring selling season kicks off and meets the oncoming tide of interstate visitors eager to shrug off the last few icicles of winter. I have always said “Come the start of spring they will all be coming over the hill with their cheque books in their hand” –

Q. What will they find this year? A. Very limited amounts of prime stock. Peter Butt Co-Principal

While the competition for property in Sydney and Melbourne has driven their markets higher it has now made the Noosa market look like very good value. There is no doubt that our market has come off the bottom but still represents great buying.

Peter is marketing three prime properties in the sought after Little Cove Market.

Apartment 2 “Villa Nette” 56 Park Road, Little Cove

Apartment 1 “The Cove” 24 Little Cove Road, Little Cove

Apartment 1 “Cuvee” 29 Allambi Rise, Little Cove

The start of this year saw a strong and steady flow of investment money flowing into bricks & mortar from investors looking for security, taxation relief and a better return than bank interest or the volatility of the stock market. This intensified the market for the self-managed superfunds investing in the $500k to $1 mill bracket. I think it has taken much longer than anticipated to recover confidence since the GFC hit. However, this is now definitely behind us and the pure residential component to the Noosa market is coming into a new growth phase, with strong confidence being shown from residents within the Noosa market who have taken steps to upgrade their positions. They see real value in the very restricted supply available in the prime positions that have come to the market in recent times. We are seeing older homes in prime spots being demolished to make way for modern architect designed residences. Vacant land in Little Cove, Noosa Sound and Sunshine Beach has been snapped up and new building projects enacted. The “Smart Money” has been on the move into the prime end of the market for almost a year, largely unnoticed. I suggest that the first mover advantage is being taken up and those securing long term value in prime positions are going to be well rewarded in the coming year. Once some of these prime opportunities have been taken out of the market and supply subsequently declines we will become aware of just how undersupplied the Noosa market really is at this end of the market. At the same time, while the market is still in transition, we are seeing existing listed properties selling under replacement value, especially those properties that have been in the sale process since last summer. Buyers need to act on these properties while the supply of them still exists. I have seen a number of value buyers missing out on well-priced properties thinking that better value may pop up around the corner. They are simply not popping up…..

homes for sale via private treaty. Across the capital cities, Melbourne is still the city where auctions are the most popular method of selling a home.

According to the data, there were about 380,000 dwellings advertised for sale across Australia’s capital cities over the 2014/15 financial year, of which roughly 84,000, or 26 per cent, were advertised as auction sales.

The data states 39 per cent of all Melbourne’s residential property listings over the past financial year were taken to auction, with Sydney and Canberra not far behind at 38 per cent and 36 per cent respectively.

The article states the proportion of auction sales has broadly been rising since the 2008/09 financial year when auctions comprised a much lower 16 per cent of all dwellings listed for sale.

“Interestingly, when we examine the proportion of listings taken to auction across product types, Canberra and Sydney are both showing a larger proportion of auction listings for houses than Melbourne,” Mr

Mr Lawless said the rise in the proportion of residential properties taken to auction should come as no surprise, considering how hot housing market conditions are in the auction centric cities of Melbourne and Sydney. “While housing market conditions remain strong, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, it is likely that auctions will continue to be a popular way of selling a residential property,” Mr Lawless said. “When market demand is high and buyers are highly competitive, the auction process is

Think beyond spring The geography of your home can be a contributing factor to the ideal time to sell. In hot or humid areas for instance, your property may be more appealing during the cooler months. Or your home may have particular features like an open fireplace or underfloor heating that are best showcased

If you are selling in winter, be sure to choose inspection times when your home’s interior receives maximum sunlight.

Art will keep popping up THE PopUp art series that has been at the Cooroy Butter Factory since May will stay until the end of the year. Noosa Regional Art Gallery director Nina Shadforth made the announcement at the end of last week and said the success of the exhibition had been encouraging. “I am really pleased to be able to extend the PopUp shows through to the end of the year,” she said. The PopUp Art Series Exhibition has been a collaboration between the Noosa Regional Art Gallery and region-

al artists through Artists Collective and co-ordinated by well known local artists Tricia Bradford and Gabi Dick. “Visitation to the Butter Factory has increased steadily with the PopUp exhibition which is gaining traction in terms of the visitors knowing that there will be artists on-site to talk to, be able to purchase an original work of art at reasonable prices and even see artists working,” Nina said. Throughout the remaining months of this year, the PopUp exhibition will also be peppered with annual local favourites such as the Noosa District

State High School Year 12 Student Exhibition and the Christmas in Cooroy Photographic Exhibition. “The PopUp series concept has certainly activated the Butter Factory space and I believe that the local businesses are starting to see some positive signs and reasons to extend their hours for visitors to Cooroy who like to visit galleries and enjoy a coffee or lunch as part of their visit,” Nina said. For more information on the Butter Factory and the PopUp art series, visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au or phone 5329 6580.

LIVETODAY

Music is uniquely Mental IF you’re looking for a way to treat dad this Fathers’ Day why not send him Mental As Anything with a special performance at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club. From simple beginnings as a student band playing the blues, '60s pop and country, Mental As Anything has become one of Australia’s most

iconic rock bands. In 1978, the band was picked up by Regular Records, which sold out 1300 copies of their three-track vinyl Mental As Anything Plays At Your Party in just two weeks. The vinyl featured their bestknown track The Nips Are Getting Bigger, which became the band’s

first national hit in 1979 through Festival Records. What followed was a string of hits throughout the '80s and '90s such as Come Around, Just Like Romeo and Juliet, Too Many Times and so many more. Now, Mental fans can take a step back in time when the band performs

at Sunshine Beach Surf Club for a special Fathers’ Day gig on Sunday 6 September. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for non-members, kids are free so bring Dad for a great day out. Tickets can be booked at club reception or phone 5447 5491.

WIN NOOSA Today has two double passes to give away to the Mental As Anything show. To enter, simply email your name and phone number to competitions@noosatoday.net.au. A winner will be drawn on Tuesday 1 September and will be notified by email or phone.

Art captures Noosa’s natural qualities Entitled Interpretations of Place this exhibition explores five natural Noosa features through the eyes of painters, photographer and poets. From the ocean viewed from the Noosa National Park through to Lake Macdonald at Cooroy; Lake Cootharaba at Boreen Point to Cranks Creek in Tewantin and of course our Noosa River that weaves its way from the sandy front beaches to the inland wetlands, our Noosa Biosphere has been interpreted through different artistic media. Some depict the landscape through realistic representation, others will seek to capture the unusual angle that makes their work unique.

Noosa Regional Gallery director Nina Shadforth said the community was justifiably proud of the natural and protected environment that so distinguished Noosa from many of its counterparts. “The gallery is excited to be showcasing not only our Noosa Biosphere but also the exceptional talents of our local visual artists and writers in this unique exhibition,” she said. The exhibition will be held from Thursday 27 August through to Sunday 18 October. Interpretations of Place will be officially opened by Councillor Frank Wilkie on Friday 28 August, at 6pm. Entry to the event is free. Attendees should register via email gallery@noosa.qld.gov.au.

AS Noosa residents, many of us are often asked why does Noosa celebrate being a biosphere and what does that actually mean? Our responses and interpretations usually include something about our rainforests, beaches, wetlands, lakes, river, and mountains. We usually add in how such a landscape is extremely accommodating for flora and fauna and is a major centre of species richness and uniqueness supporting speciation and biodiversity. Some of our exceptional local artists, photographers and writers have collaborated to interpret our biosphere in a unique exhibition, opening Thursday 27 August at the Noosa Regional Gallery.

It's 25 years since we lived in Sydney, and I could never go back. But one of the joys of visiting is staying with friends who make available their little hideaways and bolt holes. Our home for much of last week was this boathouse on Pittwater. Not a bad view to wake up to.

PHIL JARRATT

IN SYDNEY last week I caught up with some of the original members of the Brookvale Mafia. “Don’t call us that,” scolded 90-year-old Gordon Woods, who with Noosa’s own Billy Wallace pioneered the modern surfboard industry, building wooden “toothpicks” under houses in Bondi and Coogee in the war years. We were sitting down for a cup of tea in his penthouse apartment, with stunning views out over Manly and the Heads. “I don’t know where that nonsense came from. We were just hard-working fellows who saw an opportunity and took it.” Indeed they did. When the American and Hawaiian lifeguard teams visited Australia for an international surf carnival held at Torquay, Victoria, in conjunction with the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, they brought with them their revolutionary “Malibu Chip” surfboards, shaped from super-lightweight balsa wood and sealed in a plastic shell. They demonstrated their skills in Sydney before heading south, blowing the collective minds of the tiny surfing community with their

turns across the wave face held in check by plywood fins. This was far more advanced than anything the Australians had seen, and the race was on to get a hold of a “Yank board” before they left the country. Gordon Woods tried out Bob Burnside’s ten-footer at Bondi and had to have it. He threw a few mates in his car to help cover the petrol bills and drove south, cornering Burnside at the Torquay carnival and extracting an agreement to purchase the board when he returned to Sydney. A couple of the other young surfers managed to buy boards from the Americans, including Bob Pike, later a famous big wave rider, who bought a beautiful, sleek red gun from paddling hero Tommy Zahn, who was chiefly famous at the time for having dated Marilyn Monroe. But Pike found the board too unstable and sold it to Denny Keogh, who had started surfing at Manly in 1945 on a solid redwood board owned by Claude West, who had been taught to surf in 1915 by Duke Kahanamoku. “Do you know what happened to that beautiful board?” Denny asked me rhetorically when we had lunch at the Harbord Diggers Club last week. “I’d started making balsa boards with Bill Clymer and we ran out of balsa and still had an order to fulfil. So I stripped the glass off the Tommy Zahn red rocket and reshaped it for the customer.” Denny took a big slug of his merlot and waited for the shock of this to sink in. “And do you know what else? I coined the phrase ‘Brookvale Mafia’. You’d better not tell Gordon that!” I dropped around the corner to see Barry Bennett at the sprawling Bennett Surfboards and Dion Chemicals factory on Harbord Road, where Barry has reigned supreme as Australia’s leading supplier of foam surfboard blanks

for more than half a century now, and found Bennett, 84 years young next month, emerging from the shaping bay with foam dust coating his shoulders. “Jeez, Barry,” I said, “you’re not still mowing foam, are you?” The multi-millionaire gave me his famous crooked grin and said, “Gotta keep me hand in.” The group of surfboard pioneers who I shall no longer refer to as the Brookvale Mafia, still meet for lunch at a cafe in Dee Why about once a month to reminisce, but after all these years, they still can’t agree on who came first. What we do know is that around 1957, when a man named Arthur Milner started importing Ecuadorian balsa, thus ending the shortage that had forced Gordon Woods and Bill Wallace to copy the American boards in hollow, ply-coated versions known as okinuis, it started to get difficult to find places to house surfboard factories in Bondi and Coogee. Gordon Woods and Barry Bennett started looking on the other side of the Harbour, and independently bought chunks of an old market garden in a valley behind Freshwater Beach. By 1958 they had been joined in Brookvale by Denny Keogh (trading as Keyo Surfboards), Scott Dillon, Bill Wallace and Greg McDonagh. Soon they were experimenting with foam blanks instead of balsa, and as the 1960s began, virtually all of the Australian surfboard industry was housed in a few blocks of new industrial estate at Brookvale. When I bought my first new surfboard in 1965, I traded in my water-logged Barry Bennett and got a sparking green Gordon Woods, choosing it from a selection of “shop boards” that Gordon and his staff would display on the lawn in front of the factory every Saturday. “Brookie” has lost much of its character over the years as the surfboard industry has decentralised, but the men who founded it have lost none of theirs.

ARCADIA Street and Lanyana Way will soon be transformed when the annual Junction Flava Food and Wine Street Fair comes to town on Saturday 12 September. Event organisers, the Noosa Junction Association, said there would be even more local Flava this year with the event to showcase musicians, artisan talent and a kid’s corner. There will be more fun, more value, and more Flava with even more Junction foodies joining the fun for this year’s street party. Now in its third year, the street fair kicks off at 11am on Saturday 12 September and will offer food from around the world as the Junction’s favourite foodies showcase their fabulous fare. The team from Village Bicycle will man the bar while the Quencher’s pedal-powered juices are back by popular demand. Joining the festival are the Curry Junction Cafe, Kimchi Korean restaurant, Jardin Japonesque, Black Pepper, Pasta Pronto, Mystic India, Red Ink cafe and bar, Canteen, Ipazzi Ristorante and many more. Noosa Junction Association president Carole Tretheway said the festival appealed to both locals and visitors. “As always we strive to keep the day affordable for local families and holiday makers and food vouchers can be purchased from just $5,” she said.

Get pedaling: Geoff Cantor of Peregian Beach powers his own smoothie at the Quenchers tent at last year’s festival. “It’s a day to celebrate the diversity of the Junction. Our local Flava extends beyond our eclectic food and beverages on offer, to music, arts, fashion, beauty, health and well-being. We have so many unique businesses, restaurants, bars and cafes across the precinct. “The Flava Food and Wine Fest is our invitation to locals to experience the quality and variety they have right on their doorstep.” Entry to the festival is free and there is a line-up of free live en-

tertainment with a range of choice from live music to dance lessons and hip-hop. “Families are encouraged to bring a picnic rug, claim their spot and sit back and enjoy the entertainment,” Carole said. A highlight will be the return of the Waiters’ Race being organised by Ruby from Ipazzi Ristorante. Last year’s winners, Quenchers, will have pride on the line as they battle the Junction’s favourite waiters to retain the trophy.

Ruby from Ipazzi Ristorante shows how to carry a tray in the annual Waiter’s Race at the Flava Festival.

raised and finished British breed sections being placed in the cabinet for this process. Our dry aged beef is abundant in marbling to ensure the mouth-watering flavours our customers have come to expect. The process is typically 14-21 days, but can be up to a month or longer. “Our cabinet provides conditions where a balance of time, temperature, air circulation and humidity has been set. Over time, a protective ‘crust’ forms over the meat and it loses

up to one-third of its moisture content due to water evaporation. This helps to concentrate the flavours and has a dramatic impact on tenderness. Prior to preparation, the crusted surface is trimmed off before packaging revealing succulent deep red beef. “There is a real art in achieving the ultimate balance between complexity of flavours, juiciness and tenderness. Dry aged beef possesses a uniquely nutty and buttery flavour that makes

it a distinctive choice for the discerning buyer. “We recommend that the perfect dry aged steak is not overcooked - medium rare is the optimum and paired with a McLaren Vale Grenache. Just like making a fine wine or cheese, the dry aging process turns an exceptional cut of beef into a gastronomic delight. “We also have created our signature dry aged beef burger that is created from selected cuts from our dry age cabinet. Our burger has the same great nutty and buttery taste that you expect from dry-aged beef in a burger.” Discover the tastes of dry aged beef at Eumundi Meats, located in Belmondos Organic Market, 59 Rene Street, Noosaville.

Good chances if detected early enough BREAST cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among woman in Australia with one in eight women developing the disease in their lifetime. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), 15,600 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and by 2020 an average of 47 women every day, or 17,210, women are projected to be diagnosed with the disease. Women aged between 40 and 69 are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, but Australian women diagnosed with the disease have an 89 per cent chance of survival five years after diagnosis. NBCF said the improved survival rate is due to early detection through regular mammograms and improved treatment outcomes for breast cancer, but there is still work to do with seven women a day

still dying from the horrible disease. What is breast cancer? The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) described breast cancer as a malignant tumour that originates in the cells of the breast. Cancer develops when cells grow abnormally and multiply. These abnormal cells develop into cancerous growths that can, in some cases, spread (metastasise) to other areas of the body. Breast cancer occurs predominantly in females, although men can also develop the disease, accounting for about one per cent of cases. What should I look out for? The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) said there were a number of signs to look out for including a lump, lumpiness or thickening of the breast, or a change in shape, crusting, a sore or

ulcer, redness or inversion of the nipple. Also look out for discharge from the nipple that is blood-stained, clear or occurs without squeezing, plus any changes in the skin of the breast such as puckering or dimpling. Changes in the size or shape of the breast, including an increase or decrease, can also be a sign of breast cancer. According to the NBCF, the best way to recognise any changes is to get to know what is normal for your breasts and regularly check for any changes. The NBCF runs the Register 4 which is an online initiative where you can sign up to participate in breast cancer research, or call BreastScreen on 13 20 50 for a free mammogram if you are aged between 50 and 69.

Get to know your breasts. Regular checks are the best way to notice any changes.

We are proud to be involved with this event and will continue to help raise money to find a cure. Proudly supporting Paddle in Pink

The news no-one wants to hear, again “How lucky was I he was still operating,” she said. “He was surprised to see me again after so many years.” Scans revealed Chris would need a mastectomy, which would see her spend three days in hospital heading home a little battered but “happy to be cancer free”, but sadly, at the post-operation appointment the surgeon delivered bad news for Chris and her family. “The surgeon gave me some news that was totally unexpected,” Chris said. “The tumour was larger and more aggressive than last time. It was an invasive lobular carcinoma which is not able to be detected by a mammogram. “I needed to have four rounds of chemotherapy three weeks apart. I was in shock. What was supposed to be a simple surgery and recovery meant I now had to refocus on something I had not even thought about.” Chris said despite the news, she tried to remain positive during her chemotherapy treat-

cells to fight infection and ended up in intensive care for a week, but the Noosa ICU staff gave excellent love and care.” The following two chemotherapy treatments went well for Chris and she is now living her life cancer free, using her time to encourage others to check their breasts. Chris, along with other breast cancer survivors, meet every Wednesday morning at Boardwalk Boat Hire to jump on a paddle board and spend time connecting as a group. “We’re like a team,” she said. “We can talk about what we’re going through or have been through, but it’s also a lot of fun and great for the exercise. “I now also enjoy walking along the river with a walking group and aqua aerobics that supports survivors as well.” Chris will put on her pink this Sunday and join the Paddle in Pink to celebrate being cancer free.

IT was six years and one day after her first breast cancer diagnosis that Cooroibah local Chris Johnstone was diagnosed once again. It was with thanks to a nurse at Breast Screen who picked up a small dimple on Chris’s breast during the scan and recommended she see a doctor. “It was so small I failed to notice it,” Chris said. “I am so grateful to her for being observant and acting on it.” Chris went to Breast Screen Nambour for an ultrasound and biopsy but said being diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time was devastating. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer again after six years of being clear,” she said. “I had difficulty informing my family again that a lump had been found in my right breast.” Chris travelled to Brisbane for surgery as the doctor who had operated on her during her first diagnosis while in Sydney was now operating in Brisbane.

Bill’s on hand to straighten things out NOOSAVILLE Smash repairs owner Mal Favager has seen many businesses come and go during the 24 years since he and his partner Wendy purchased the workshop. Mal said two major factors have seen the business stand the test of time - quality workmanship and an emphasis on customer service. No job is too small, and never too much trouble. Mal has always been of the opinion that “biggest isn’t always the best”, meaning keeping the business small and personal is vital for longevity.

“A major part of our business is insurance-claim related,” he said. “We like to make every customer feel comfortable in choosing us as their repairer. Every owner has the right to choose who repairs their vehicle when an insurance claim is in place. We assure quality repairs are carried out irrespective of owner circumstances.” Mal has recently handed the management of the business to long-term employee and close friend Bill Broadhurst.

“As Wendy and I approach retirement age and like to travel, I could not think of a better person to manage the business while keeping our services up to standard,” he said. “Bill has a vast knowledge of the industry, he is a local, likeable lad and very capable of making all our customers happy.” Be sure to call into Noosaville Smash Repairs at 2/17 Rene Street, where you can talk to Bill or the office staff about all requirements regarding claims and repairs.

$500m plan targets road toll MINISTER for Road Safety Mark Bailey this week released the Queensland Government’s new Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan, a road map to improve safety, reduce injury and curb the state’s road toll. The strategy sets a long-term target to reduce the road toll from the four-year average (2011/14) by more than a quarter to below 200 by 2020 and reduce the number of hospitalisations from road accidents. The Action Plan includes 57 initiatives, and builds on the work of the Queensland Government’s Safer Roads, Safer Queensland Forum. “The government’s action plan targets Queensland’s road toll and aims to drastically reduce the number of crash deaths and serious injuries on the state’s roads, Mr Bailey said. “The plan is the culmination of discussions and solutions put forward by the experts at the Safer Roads, Safer Queensland forum held in April this year. “The government is investing more than $500 million over two years for important road safety programs to fund the implementation of the 57 initiatives in the action plan. Key initiatives in the 2015/17 plan include establishing a Citizen’s Taskforce to make recommendations to government about road safety issues, the implementation of a program to engage 16 to 21-year-olds on road safety, and the installation of flashing lights in 200 riskassessed school zones. The government also plans to introduce an app version of the 100-hour learner logbook, including periodic reminders for learners to focus on certain driving situations such as night time, wet weather and highway driving, as well as introduce double demerit points for two or more mobile phone offences committed within one year. Bike riders are also considered with $10 million to be made available to improve infra-

COOLUM Tennis’ latest facility is finally a reality after two years - but it’s not a new court. After changing sites and planning, the club finally has a sandpit - to help entertain the many young children who come along. While Friday’s weather was not good enough to play tennis in, Alex and Anthony still managed to build the new sandpit. Club members expect the new sand pit to be tested during the week. Families find the safe environment of the tennis club a great place to bring their children of all ages. Many of the pre-schoolers have been looking forward to the sand pit instead of playing in the gardens. Maybe, it is the parents who would prefer them to play in clean sand. The area is yet to be fenced and a picnic table is to be added to the area. Hopefully, families will participate in Patron’s Day and make use of the sandpit. As well as the tournament on Patron’s Day, Councillor Steve Robinson is officially opening the new meeting room at noon. The club looks forward to thanking Steve once again for the help from Sunshine Coast Council in making the project a reality. Also attending will be the club’s patron, Laurie Bruhl, who is almost 92. Unfortunately, Laurie is not well enough to play tennis, but he does have a hit on the wall each week. Laurie continues to be a valuable member of the tennis club and many people are honoured that he will once again award the trophies. Social tennis has a constantly changing attendance with a number of regulars taking holidays and fulfilling family commitments. Currently, Lynn Heath is travelling in the USA and Canada and having a great time.

As well as players away, the club is lucky to attract regular visiting players who are on holidays. Once again, Lyn is here from Shepparton and Andre is visiting from New Zealand. Both are very competent players happy to play on any surface with all standard players. The club has also welcomed Sasha and David Wil-

son back from their travels. If you are interested in joining a friendly group of players, check out the website for times for both day and night matches. Andrew Ash, the coach, is always happy to answer inquiries. Contact him on 0421 391 505. If he is on court, he will get back to you at a later time. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Fins finish with a draw By JOE JURISEVIC THE Noosa Dolphins Under-9 Rugby Union teams battled it out for a 25-all draw in the rain at Noosa at the weekend. Dolphins Under-9s put on a show at Noosa in the rain to fight out a five try draw in an evenly matched game. Captain Remy did not disappoint, trying hard all game doing numerous hit ups from the tap to gain great ground for the Fins. Jaxon fished for the crumbs out of the ruck to dart forward making big yards with an impressive fend off to any Red that came near. A huge game came from Joch securing the ball, tough runs forward and impressive do or die tackling on the line. Mack followed up the forwards to pass off to waiting Fins backs and pulled off a ripper tackle to deny a certain try in the second half. Fin performed well in the line out and positioned himself well after the forward push to pick up the ball and pass off loading before getting tackled. Saatchan bagging two tries and Tyler one, were on fire reading the play positioning themselves wherever the action was. Louie shot through for a try when needed then worked tirelessly all game in attack and defence. Zac led the forwards all game running low and hard, scoring the first try as a reward. Jack continues to go from strength to strength providing the big push when needed and made good ground with ball in hand and will be one to watch next year. Byron was on song with safe hands, catching all the passes coming his way, then got those fast legs and effective fends working to bolt forward, unlucky on two occasions not to score. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match was Hunter. Hunter organised the scrum, did the hard work in the maul and showed skill with numerous arcing runs through opposition. He showed pinpoint passing and tackled the house down when needed. A wet start to the day made conditions tricky for some of the earlier games, but no one seemed to mind a little rain to help soften the tackles. Only one week of competition games for the younger age groups before the season ends and finals footy time begins for the Under12s and up to finish a great season.

Matthew Flinders 70 defeated Noosa Reds 60 in the Under-7s. An adventurous game plan of shifting the ball wide proved too ambitious for the conditions on Saturday, driving rain and a slippery pill forced uncharacteristic turnovers that materialised into points for a classy Flinders team. Darcy ignored the conditions and bolted from his own 22 to score a brilliant individual try, Conor, Harry and Gusso combined well as Rory tackled relentlessly. Will and Sarena dug deep playing back to back matches and both still turned in solid performances on a day that was better suited to mud wrestling. Domino’s Pizza Player Of The Match was Darcy Fairbanks. The Under-11 Noosa Fins 36 defeated Brothers 0, with the result of the match guaranteeing Noosa second place on the ladder with one game to go. In very wet conditions, the Fins put on a faultless show played almost entirely within their opponents half. Brothers were able to keep the Fins from scoring until the tenth minute but after the first score it was all one way traffic as the boys retained possession, piled on more pressure and had a bit of fun in the rain. Tries: Jason Burns, Jarrah Charlesworth, Lochie Dudgeon, Max Ruster, Josh Whitehill. Conversions: Jarrah Charlesworth (2), James Gelling. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match: Nick Hooper.

We are the champions.

Seven karate national champions NOOSA had seven new National Champions following the Australian National Karate titles held in Adelaide earlier this month. Eleven students from Karate Budokan at Noosaville represented Queensland at the Australian National Karate titles coming away with seven titles. This is the highest level of karate competition in Australia, for Noosa to have such a dominant force at this level is something the whole community should be very proud of. The locals picked up nine gold, four silver and eleven bronzes. Karate Budokan’s World chief instructor Shihan Wayne MacDonald, (7th Dan) has been one of the Queensland coaches and a former multiple Australian and World Champion and was thrilled with the success and the dedication shown by the local students. “It was a big achievement in a very busy competition year to dominate the nation-

als after we won the Best and fairest club in Queensland earlier in the year,” he said. “They just always train hard and deliver the effort when it counts, our entire team of Senseis is very proud of them all.” The region’s newest national champions are Riana Loffel 19 (3 Gold), Brandon Evans 15 (3 Gold), Ella Boot 15, Jackson Hinds 11 and Isla Corbett 12. “This is the highest domestic reward they could achieve after a big year of serious preparation,” Wayne said. “It is so rewarding as a coach to see someone want a goal so badly, and to finally achieve it. “The result for Riana is also a special one as she took out the senior women’s open champion title in only her second year competing against the women in the seniors and she won her Under 21 years weight division also!” Riana is now in Switzerland to compete

there and in Germany in her preparation to represent Australia at the Junior World Titles in Indonesia this November. Brandon Evans won gold in all three of his sparring divisions, he is now off to represent Australia at the Commonwealth titles in India this September with his sister Celina. Ella Boot took the gold in the Cadet Female sparring and the silver in the Cadet open and Jackson Hinds defended his title from last year by stepping up into an older division and proving that size is no match for speed. Isla Corbett, in only her second year of representing Queensland, took out the gold in the sparring and the bronze in the Kata proving that she is an all-round karate kid. “Overall this is a huge result for a regional area to have so many representatives at a National title and then achieve the ultimate success,” Wayne said.

Three Noosa teams in the big dance By RICHARD MURRIHY

The Noosa U17 Black after winning a nail-biting tie breaker to make the grand final.

THREE preliminary finals awaited the sides on Saturday at Caboolture for the 17 Blacks, 17 Whites and the men’s softball teams. It was an amazing day as Noosa scooped two out of three, and now have three teams in the grand final this Saturday. Noosa White was first to step up and the game went down to the wire. The first dig saw Noosa get one run and Focus one run, Charles helping out with a catch at Shortstop taking the score to one all after one. The second saw Charles and Jacob get home and Dylan strike out three, Jarred Brown hit a home run and Josh got around the bases for

52 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 27 August, 2015

Noosa to get another two runs in while they kept Focus to one run. The fifth innings saw Jarred score another home run to give Noosa a 6-2 lead before Focus came up to bat, and it was all or nothing for both teams. Focus edged closer as the crowd grew louder; it was a tight fight but Focus’ next batter hit one out of the field, bringing home four runners and the win at 7-6. But what a great effort by the Whites. On the adjacent diamond, the Blacks took on the Demons in a game full of twists, turns and thrills. The Demons were ahead after the first innings but the second innings saw a Emma take a catch and shut them down.

For the Blacks, Lewis got a safe hit, running to third and then stealing home; William hit a good two bagger and Coady stole home two runs giving Noosa a 2-1 lead after two innings. Noosa again strangled the Demons; Josh and Lewis were on a collision course as Josh took a catch and William sharked one in front of Emma while Shinai struck out the third. Noosa were 2-1 after three innings. The fourth and fifth innings were both no-run innings. By the sixth innings, the tension was building and the Demons picked up a run while Noosa again went runless, making the score 4-2 to Noosa before the Demons picked up two

runs in the final innings with Noosa still to bat. The game came down to a tiebreaker with the Demons taking two runs, leaving Noosa to make up three runs for the win. With the first and third base ready to run, Lewis is up to bat, and he smacks it past third base past the fielders bringing home three runners and the win for Noosa at 7-6. Noosa Men won their prelim-final 10-6, and I must mention Leigh’s home run of the first pitch and Riley’s home run on an error topped off a day of excitement. The Noosa teams will now enter three grand finals next week. Don’t forget, the first game starts at 8am. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Club renovations on track Between the

flags RON LANE

THE winter months continue to be busy for our local surf clubs, for as we have previously stated, that time of the year is all about planning and overhauling for the season ahead. At Sunshine Beach, renovations to upgrade clubhouse facilities for the active members is well and truly underway. “The restructure for the active members section of the clubhouse, kitchen and toilet facilities is progressing nicely,” said club captain Scott Summers. “It will be well and truly finished before the start of the season. Also we are due to start proficiencies and our first will be held on 20 September at the NAC starting at 7am and then back to the beach for 8am start. Regarding new

membership, I would like to take the opportunity to say a very sincere welcome to Clint Robinson who has joined our coaching staff. I am sure his knowledge and experience will be a major asset for our club.” For Sunshine’s little people, the Nippers, their sign on day will be Saturday 5 September from 9am till 3 at the NAC. On Saturday afternoon, several of Sunshine’s finest will travel to Brisbane for the official state dinner to be held at the Town Hall. This is the occasion when the top awards covering all sections of Queensland Surf Life Saving are announced and following their outstanding achievements during the season, there is every chance that they will return with several awards. We wish them well. Back over the hill at Noosa, their brothers in arms are also pushing the starters button for next season. For any club to be truly successful all areas of club life must be covered; not just patrols and competition.

With this in mind, Noosa Old Boys Chairman and Life Member Ross Fisher, is busy organising their next function which will be held on Saturday 12 September at Par 3 Golf Course starting at noon. This will be followed by their Annual Meeting which will commence at 3pm sharp and followed with a barbecue at 4pm. “The club is going great and we are hoping for a good roll up,” said Fisher. “This will give the old boys the chance to renew old mateships and this is an important part of our club history. We must never forget that it is these men who helped get us where we are today. No money and just the bare essentials in equipment, but we all stood together and when necessary called a spade a spade.” Light training sessions have started for the Noosa boat crews. So far we have two masters’ crews and an Under-23s,” said boat coach and sweep David Tomba. “We are hoping to form women's crews and also a Under-19 men's, so anyone interested

Golf day a great success

should contact the club. We would love to hear from you.” The first carnival will be the end of October on the Gold Coast and it will be the first round of the Navy Series. While talking boats the Noosa club has a surf boat for sale. Just three years old it is still in good condition. Interested parties are invited to ring the clubhouse on 5474 5688 for further information. Recently I received the news that Noosa Boat Captain Phil Bowden had announced his retirement. There can be no doubt that this clubbie did a great job and whoever follows will have big shoes to fill; no easy task. His communication skills and ability to pull everyone together was second to none; and when the need arose he didn’t pull a bad oar. On behalf of the Life Member Group and “The Laney”, many thanks mate for your loyalty and a job well done.

THE annual Sunshine Beach Surf Club golf day was held at Noosa Springs on Friday 14 August with 17 teams vying for the top honours. Players came from the Caloundra to Noosa and included Sunshine Coast business owners and local sponsors who took to the fairway on what was a beautiful day. The winning teams and players were rewarded with an array of prizes and gifts to thank them for their participation in the fund-raising event. First place went to the SBSLSC Nipper team made up of Dean and Michelle Smallman and David and Pauline Gleeson.

Great season sport continues today for bream

Jake Gardner caught this 37cm bream.

NOOSA’S BEST SPORTS COVERAGE

By JACK MANGROVE THE Noosa area has kept anglers busy this week. In the river the bream are still being caught thick and fast, with some thumpers amongst them. This proves once again that is has been one of the better bream seasons in recent years. The sandbags at the end of the dog beach, as well as the rock wall has been a hot spot for the bigger models. Fishing mullet flesh strips, hardy heads and bloodworms proving to be the best approach. Some good sized jew as well as some feisty winter jack have been taking larger profile soft plastics and live baits fished near the mouth. Consistent catches of trevally early morning and late afternoon from both the Woods Bays have kept the angler flicking lures

keen. Larger model GTs, big eye trevally, golden trevally and even diamond trevally are making their presence known in the area. Micro jigs are asserting themselves as a gun lure to target all the trevally species. Soft plastics fished higher in the water column are also yielding success. It is crucial that the plastics are rigged dead straight on the jighead to maximise results. Surface lures have been taking their fair share of the trevally also, with the added bonus of possibly picking up a tailor. The deeper sections of the ski run are holding some good jew. A finesse approach with prawn imitation soft plastics or paddle tail style plastics, combined with a persistent attitude is seeing anglers score some quality jewies.

The offshore brigade have seen good numbers of snapper from North reef when conditions permit the trip. Pear perch and parrot have also been prevalent around the lumps and bumps that make up North reef. Micro Jigs in the 20-60g range are an awesome way to change up your tactics for these great table quality reefies. Closer in Sunshine reef has been fishing best at night. Good numbers of squire and some larger snapper are falling to well presented, lightly weighted baits. Further afield the Barwon Banks had the good numbers of snapper of pearl perch but also with the bonus of large, hard fighting amberjack and rosy jobfish. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures!

The Fiona Winter Realty Noosa Tigers face Sunshine Coast rival Caloundra at Weyba Rd this Saturday in the AFLQ North First semi-final from 2.15pm. The highly fancied Tigers finished third on the ladder after the home and away rounds and now face a very competitive Caloundra outfit in order to keep their 2015 premiership dream alive.

Noosa have beaten the Panthers on both occasions in 2015 with the last confrontation a thrilling 10 point win after being down by as much as six goals. A final round bye will certainly suit the home side as they will be able to freshen up some quality seasoned footballers and regain the series of key players, of which there are plenty in the mix. Big ruckman Zac McDonald, who has enjoyed a consistent season, will certainly return to boost our tall stocks while star on-baller-come-forward Shane `Dogga’ Davis is another who will definitely re-enter the fray and as usual make a significant positive influence on the Tigers fortunes. Youngster Jesse Malthouse should regain his position in the senior side after not doing too much wrong in 2015 after an excellent pre-season and start to the year. Other names to be thrown up include Opie, Sutton, Watling, Stewart, Winter, Fulton and Corrigan; enhancing the depth the Noosa Tigers have enjoyed this season. A very interesting selection night waits and one in which I’m sure senior coach James Gellie would want at this time of the year. In the past month the Tigers have been able to get valuable game time into star recruit Brent Moloney who seems to be hitting form at the right part of the year. His general experience around the footy, goal kicking ability and booming right foot will be a handful for the

RICHARD MURRIHY The Noosa U15s lost their preliminary final this week leaving

Skipper Tommy McKittrick will lead the Tigers into the Semi-final against Caloundra this Saturday. Photo: Darryn Smith Group shot: Supplied Panthers this Saturday. The fact skipper Tommy McKittrick got through the Aspley game unscathed is a massive plus for the Tigers as the dual premiership player makes correct decisions and has been a key over the years in big games for Noosa. Dual premiership player for the Brisbane Lions Robbie Copeland is another one to watch after enjoying an outstanding 2015. Copeland’s attack on the footy is mindboggling and his decision making under pressure un-wavering. Bushy would have to be a big chance in taking out this year’s AFLQ North league medal. Onballer Nick Hill has been as consistent as anyone continually winning the footy and using it to the Tigers advantage, another outstanding recruit the Tigers managed to attract. All in all a game not to be missed. Should be a massive day kicking off at 11.30 am with the Maroochydore v Caloundra reserves first semi-final. The Tiger Can bar will be open from 1pm with the jungle drum ready to go.

Best of luck to Sammy Krushka and his ressies who head down to Brisbane to face Mayne for a spot in this year’s grand final and entire club would like to wish our Under 17’s

The U15 boys tried hard all day but could not put the ball through the big sticks but found the little ones a bit more than they wanted.

So let’s all get behind them. The game starts at 2.45pm at Maroochydore’s Fisherman’s Road grounds. Check the AFL sunshine coast website in case there are changes.
