A WARBURTON man who missed the opportunity to connect with his mother after finding out he was adopted has welcomed the repeal of ‘contact statements’ for adoption cases prior to 1984. The statements, introduced by the Victorian Government in 2013, stopped natural parents of adopted children accessing information or contacting their adult children with fines for doing so running up to more than $9000. The current Victorian Government recently added an amendment to the Adoption Act, removing these statements and allowing natural parents of adopted people to contact their estranged children. William Hammersley of Warburton only found out he was adopted in 2012, after living most of his life with his adoptive parents and believing his mother did not want to make contact with him. Mr Hammersley said it caused him great pain to know he could have known his mother before it was too late but the law had restricted him from doing so. “To hear that my mother was told “not to look for me“ and it was illegal for her to do so, frowned upon by society and the church,” he said. “I did eventually, in my forties, look for her, and when I did, it was too late she had passed away, then for the following years I buried it again but always in the back of my mind.” Mr Hammersley believes the repeal of this law will make the circumstances of these adoptions more transparent and help people heal relationships between families that have been separated. “It will allow the truth of the circumstance of the birth and adoption be told to the adoptee by the one person that can - the mother,” he said. “And it will honour the mother’s and parents’ right to tell that truth to their now adult sons and daughters if they wish to listen.” In a letter to Victorian MPs before the
passing of the Adoption Act amendment, Mr Hammersley described the ‘contact statements’ as “discriminatory and insulting”. “Putting in place extraordinary legal measures for post-adoption contact perpetuates the myths that supported past adoption practices. They systematically undermine the parent-child bond and reinforce out-dated views that the mother and child should be kept apart at all costs,” he wrote. Mr Hammersley said removing these laws was a big step forward in healing past wounds caused by the forced adoption practices of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. “It feels good that finally in Victoria the government and its agencies are no longer interfering in our lives,” he said. “Finally, we are given the respect as adults to contact each other and to monitor our own life without government interference.” In a written statement, Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos said the repeal was a move towards balancing out the forced adoption practices of the past by awarding equality to parents. “This is an important show of support for parents, particularly mothers, affected by past forced adoption practices, many of whom have sat and observed this legislation being debated in parliament,” she said. “While this change does not heal the trauma of the past, it acknowledges the hurt and ensures all parties to adoption are given equal rights to register their wishes about contact with their family.” The amendment to the Adoption Act passed the Victorian legislative assembly on Tuesday 18 August with the changes coming into effect once the legislation receives Royal Assent. Current contact statements will continue to be in place until they expire, but penalties will not apply for parents who wish to contact their children.

XYZ Deliveries brings a whole new dynamic by offering a unique concept for delivery of takeaway food for small businesses with an innovative model that benefits everyone. XYZ understands small businesses are now more than ever under enormous pressure trying to stay afloat and continue providing local jobs in their small communities. It is often hard to expand or try new things as cash flow often limits the potential but XYZ Deliveries offers small business the perfect solution to these issues. Aiming to create sustained employment in rural and regional areas, XYZ Deliveries offers delivery services for take-away food vendors and the like to help keep operational costs down. On average this solution saves restaurants over $10,000 per year allowing them to branch into the delivery market without having to employ staff directly. In the past, take away delivery drivers had the option of being paid per delivery or per hour but now the drivers want a more consistent pay structure. This pay structure has previously come at the expense of the restaurant owner, who ideally is looking to reduce costs. Obviously, this situation is not ideal for anyone. With XYZ Deliveries providing the services of delivery drivers to the restaurant, on demand, for a low fixed cost per week, the restaurant can get back to supplying their products without having to worry The driver is now available to provide their services across multiple premises and has a more reliable workload leading to a more secure and consistent pay structure. Furthermore, the customer also benefits by avoiding the trap of having to over-spend to have their wants delivered. XYZ Deliveries provides a win/win/win solution for all concerned. XYZ Deliveries are currently looking for more drivers to service to their growing number of restaurants for more details please contact …..

Pigs secure despite row By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE future of the Happy Valley pig farm in Wandin North is secure despite the recent controversy surrounding the farm. Co-owner Andrew Stritch informed The Mail his and his wife’s farm was not under threat after council voted down an amendment to the planning scheme to allow intensive animal husbandry. The Stritches have altered the feeding regime for their pigs by introducing a cropping phase. By adding this step into the pigs’ regular feeding cycle, Happy Valley pig farm is no longer considered an intensive feeding farm. Mr Stritch says it was not all good news for the farm, though, as the changed look of the farm may upset some people. “When we do the cropping phase the paddocks will go from green to brown, he said. “At the moment it stays pretty green but once we sew new seeds there is going to be more noise and dirt and the amenities will be worse looking in from the outside. Despite having bought his farming practise in line with the council regulations for his property, Mr Stritch remains critical of the council’s planning scheme. “The national code for outdoor piggeries is based on stock numbers rather than food, he said. “Yarra Ranges Shire is the only one that has clause 53 that differentiates between intensive

School celebrates centenary By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THIS year marks the one hundredth anniversary of the Wandin North Primary School. The school will be hosting an events day on Tuesday 1 September to celebrate the milestone with historical activities, photos, stories and memorabilia from past students and teachers. The school has had many people come forward and supply old photographs and other mementos but they are always happy to have more. One piece of history missing from the school is the bell that was used at the school during the 1920s and '30s. Anyone who has memorabilia or stories should contact the school on 5964 4570.
Briefly Teens safe after search THREE teenage boys were rescued from the bush near Upper Yarra Reservoir in Reefton on Sunday, after an all-night search involving more than 100 volunteers. Two 13-year-olds and a 14-year-old, who were in the area with Kilsyth Football Club’s Under14s team, were separated from their group returning from a walk up a hill at 2pm on Saturday, 29 August. Warburton Police Acting Sergeant, Don Trice, said the “warning flags were put up at 5.45pm, and that 70 CFA and 30 SES volunteers came out to assist with the search for the boys. Sgt Trice said the searchers heard the boys’ voices during the night, and found them unharmed on Sunday morning after resuming the search. “(They had) come out on a track - they’d walked out from the bush through a gully and across a creek, he said. “It was some distance. Victoria Police posted on Facebook on Sunday that the boys were taken to Maroondah Hospital for observation, but that they ‘appeared well’. Sgt Trice praised the “well-organised search, which was overseen by Lilydale Police, and the determination of the volunteers who gave their time to recover the boys. “It’s fantastic what they (VIC SES) do, and the CFA, he said. “We take it for granted that they roll out rain, hail or shine, but they do a great job.

Intense vote
Healesville Organic Farmers Market Every Saturday 8a —1p Coro a o Park, River Street, Healesville
By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS YARRA Ranges Council has rejected a motion to rescind its decision to abandon a planning scheme amendment on intensive farming. At a meeting on 11 August, council voted down plans to have the amendment and accompanying submission considered by an independent panel. The motion to rescind the previous decision was lost by just one vote, with both sides of the issue presenting passionate arguments. Marilyn Cumerford of Yellingbo spoke in opposition to rescinding the decision and raised concerns the amendment would open the door for intensive farming practices in the Yarra Valley that would undercut smaller farming operations. “You can farm but you need to farm traditionally, not intensively,” she said. “Just because some people were not happy with the last decision does not mean it needs to be revisited. Democracy means sticking to the decisions that are made even if you disagree with them.” Speakers in favour of the motion argued that sending the submissions to a panel of experts would deliver a more fair and comprehensive review of the issue. “We are lumped in with the worse intensive forms of farming under the current definition,” said Andrew Stritch, co-

horses, blackberries and horticulture,” he said. Councillors were equally split over the motion to rescind the decision from 11 August. Concerns raised by councillors opposed included the effectiveness of a permit system, the unknown results of a State Government review of the definition of intensive animal husbandry, and the lack of submissions in support of the amendment. Whereas councillors in support pointed out that an independent panel review would give a better overview of the submissions and a more thorough understanding of the issues involved from experts in the agricultural field.

New Alice takes to the stage By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE High School students took to the stage last week to present an all-out performance of the classic story, Alice in Wonderland. Alice in Wonderland Jr opened at the high school’s Ion Whykes Theatre on Thursday, 27 August, following a matinee performance for kindergarten students. Most of the seats in the theatre were full by the time the Mad Hatter (Rory Davies) burst through the curtains, flawlessly reading the poem of the Jabberwocky. Spanning just over an hour, Alice in Wonderland Jr followed Alice’s journey down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland, in pursuit of the darting and anxious White Rabbit. Each scene in the show was elaborately set with projected backgrounds, props and musical pieces, all passionately performed by the students, who never missed a beat with their lines. Alice’s transformation at the hands
of Wonderland’s various food and drinks were illustrated by cast changes, with four different Alices acted out by Nikita Aldridge, Amber Winthrop, Tiani Heatherich and Estelle Peterson. The well-known Cheshire Cat was also acted out by five students - Faith Butler, Lucy Waddingham, Sophie Smith, Nicole Maile and Molly Hore. And the group made the change work, with three on stage finishing one another’s sentences and moving as one through the scenes. Memorable scenes and characters from the Lewis Carroll novel and Disney’s adaptation of the story can be found in the stage show, with the Mad Hatter and the Caterpillar (Chenile Chandler) stealing the show with animated delivery. Referencing the original novel’s game of flamingo-croquet, the story deviates slightly by having Alice go up against the Queen of Hearts (Hannah Chan-Algie) in a game of Simon Says - with ridiculous results.
Alice (Nikita Aldridge) meets Tweddle Dee and Tweddle Dum (Chloe and Stephanie MacKenzie). 143649 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM
The show was also performed on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August. From the well-performed songs, fantastic technical production and character-developing scenes, to the many funny moments - Alice’s introduction to Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum is a standout - Alice in Wonderland Jr is a powerful show, which will set a high bar for performances in the years to come.At the end of the show, principal George Perini spoke glowingly about the efforts of the staff and students involved in the performance, from technical support, sound and lighting through to the cast themselves.

Woody turns it on for Warburton By JESSE GRAHAM

A WARBURTON performer will take on the big city later this month, bringing his unique children’s performances to Docklands as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Woody Clark, of Woody’s World, will perform at the Wonderland Spiegeltent in Docklands from Saturday 19 September to Sunday 27 September as part of the annual Fringe Festival. Woody’s World is described as a place where “alley cats sing and dance, mice invite you in for a cup of tea and farm animals gather together for a bush dance,” with Mr Clark accompanied by puppets and guest performers, including his own children. Mr Clark said he had been performing for
well over a decade, and had been a teacher at Yarra Junction’s Little Yarra Steiner School for 12 years. He said that teaching and performing had much in common. “You are really performing a lot of the time,” he said. “Through body language, facial expressions, gesture and vocal tone, you are communicating with your audience.” Growing up in a musical family, which toured outback communities and schools, it seemed only natural that Mr Clarke would pick up the guitar himself, though he said he was shy about performing until he was older. Now, it’s a lifestyle, with his children multiinstrumentalists themselves.

He said he was passionate about performing for children, and the pay-off was captivating their imagination. “You’re doing a song or telling a story, and you’ve got them in the palm of your hand - it might be small, (but) they’re just totally engrossed in what you’re doing,” he said. “I love that.” Mr Clarke will be joined by his companion, the life-like Hercules the Alley Cat, assisted by puppeteer, Dave Splatt, as well as jazz pianist, Hue Blanes. THERE was me - that is Seth sitting in the sinny theatre, trying to make up my rassoodock about whether I liked Stanley K’s A Clockwork Orange For the longest time, O’ my brothers, I was all on my oddy-knocky in not caring for this film one bit. All my droogs were govoreeting all radostoy about how great this film was, when I found it unbearably camp.
But after watching it again, with a malenky bit of maturity after my molodoy days, I found Clockwork Orange to be a thoroughly intriguing satire. Malcolm McDowell delivers a right horrorshow intimidating performance as Alex, the sociopathic hoodlum caught and subjected to a bezoomy indoctrination technique to cure him of his violent urges. Juxtaposed against his sadism, Alex’s urbane charm and infantile expressions make him all the more unnerving.
The synthesized Beethoveninfluenced score is gorgeousness and gorgosity made flesh, and the classical music gives the ultraviolence scenes a strange balletic quality. I have a little messel, O’ my brothers, that my prior issue with Clockwork Orange is that it expected us to feel sympathy for a grazhny evil sod. A Clockwork Orange resolved itself before my glazzies as a confronting, darkly comic movie about free will, and which boldly challenges you.

Support fires up Rate Notices 2015/2016
By JESSE GRAHAM JOB SECURITY and skills development have been locked in for disabled Yarra Ranges residents, following a $150,000 funding announcement last week. Casey MP Tony Smith announced on Wednesday, 26 August that Lilydale’s Wesley Fire and Clay, which employs people with disabilities across the Yarra Ranges, would receive a $150,000 grant from the Federal Government. He said the funding came as part of a $1.8 million funding commitment to Wesley Mission Victoria’s Australian Disability Enterprises (ADEs), which spans three years. The $150,000 funding will support Fire and Clay to develop a new business model and aims to support the ADEs as employees with disabilities transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Wesley Mission’s Manager of Community Options, Disability Services, Sue Gannon, said that funding grants such as the one announced were “critical” in giving people with disabilities employment that furthered their skills. “It’s really critical, the grant that we are getting,” Ms Gannon said. “This support from the government is going to allow us to build a sustainable business model for Fire and Clay. “Moving forward, there’s the security that there’s always going to be a place, especially within this community, for people with disabilities to find

Mr Smith said the announcement of the grant was a “testament” to the business, which provides pottery and ceramics for businesses and residents in the area. “The competition for these sorts of grants is pretty fierce, and the success is because
they’re doing such a good job here,” he said. He said his involvement with Fire and Clay went back for years, and brought along a hand-made Carlton Football Club mug sent to him by the business after visiting and being asked what his favourite team was. “I did have a couple of cups of coffee out of it, but, as you can see, it’s a large coffee cup,” he said. “It has pride-of-place on my bookshelf, behind my desk.” Before he left, Mr Smith, who recently was elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives, was asked for an autograph by one of the workers - and happily obliged.

Hearing tests for well-being NATURAL Hearing is supporting Hearing Awareness Week by inviting all individuals aged 45 years and over for a 30 minutes ‘free’ comprehensive hearing test. Bookings are required. Because we all know that early identification is the best treatment, why not come forward and have your hearing checked. There are many subjective and objective tests available and results are available soon after the test. Eyes and ears are a vital sense organ. Lots of research is going on globally, trying to find a link between hearing loss and dementia. It was discovered that people who suffer from hearing loss would typically experience a loss of memory and thinking capabilities an estimated 40 per cent faster than those who have no hearing problems. Other potential reasons include that hearing loss would lead to a certain amount of social isolation, or aloofness in life, which could potentially contribute to the decline of mental faculties that is depression. Early identification of hearing loss and their management will help to improve the social and emotional life of an individual. Currently, there is no known reason as to exactly why hearing loss seems to increase your chances of getting dementia so greatly, but there are many different theories being bounced around.
These theories are wide in range, like ‘cognitive overload’, i.e., the brain tires itself out because it has to overcompensate to hear things to the possibility that hearing loss is actually an indicator rather than a contributing factor - the loss of the lower frequency sounds could act as a ‘warning sign’ for vascular problems, which would cause both hearing loss and dementia. Signs and symptoms of hearing loss: • People you speak to sometimes seem to mumble; • Turning up the television volume day by day without realising; • Asking others to repeat if the speaker is facing away; • Speech from a distance is audible but ‘not’ intelligible; • Hard to follow group conversations in presence of other noises; • Women and children are difficult to understand; • People talking to you and walking away, becomes unintelligible; • Some sounds are intolerable and piercing in nature. Natural Hearing, with their ‘three branches’ - located in Healesville, Warburton and Vermont - is working on early identification of hearing loss and their management. Should any reason br identified, then proper referral to their GP and specialist will be made to rule out possibility of any medical and or surgical interventions. Plenty of centre options IN RELATION to the Cerini centre, did it not occur to the group which handed back the premises with no community consultation, and has it occurred to no-one since, that the building could have been made available to the many homeless people sleeping in their cars or in huts and tents in the bush? Alternatively it could have been used as a safe place for some of the thousands of women and children who can’t be taken in by under-resourced and overworked women’s refuges. What’s the betting now that it’s in the hands of a government department it will sit there empty and unused and eventually deteriorate to the point where it will be unusable? And then demolition and a nice valuable vacant block to sell off. Galleries and community spaces are wonderful but we already have plenty of them: how about some thought for our most vulnerable community members? Jude Nampitjin Power, Warburton.

Triumph and the truth IN HER regular column ‘The state of affairs’, (Mail, 18 August), Cindy McLeish MP seeks to re-write history, aiming to convince readers the Napthine Government’s actions in regard to Leadbeater’s Possum, our state’s faunal emblem, were a still-unfolding triumph. Nothing could be further from the truth. The terms of reference for the government’s advisory group (LPAG) mandated maintaining logging in forest habitats. Inevitably, the recommendations the group produced contained few, if any, conservation outcomes. Any options the group considered and evaluated as likely to benefit the possum could not be recommended because they threatened the pro-logging paradigm and were therefore outside the terms of reference. The government then used the group’s output to mould a new logging-friendly ‘Action Statement’, covertly signed off at the end of July 2014.Then, to protect the forest loggers from a looming change in government, a few weeks before last year’s election the Coalition moved all its ineffective prescriptions to new 'Management Standards and Procedures’, which can only be altered following a Regulatory Impact Statement. Other shameful actions of the government in which McLeish served included allocating all publicly owned forests outside parks and reserves to VicForests and removing oversight of logging by allowing VicForests to approve its own requests to add more coupes to its Timber Release Plans. To allow itself time to consider the new Victorian action statement, the Federal Government’s Threatened Species Scientific Committee delayed its report on upgrading the conservation status of Leadbeater’s Possum from May 2014 until December. The report confirmed the ineffectiveness of the action statement, instead recommending that Minister Hunt retains and updates the 16-year-old federal recovery plan. The actions of the Napthine Government were overtly, indeed proudly, biased in favour of the native forest logging industry and, as such, contributed to the ongoing decline of Leadbeater’s Possum, making its EPBC uplisting to 'critically endangered’ in April both necessary and inevitable. McLeish’s carelessly worded questions and her imaginative interpretations of the answers tell us nothing about the possum’s current conservation status. Instead, they graphically illustrate the persistence of Cindy’s ideological bias and her ongoing failure to comprehend the broader issues around management of public forests. Steve Meacher, Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum.

We have Courses in your local area! Boronia, Box Hill, Cranbourne, Frankston, Hampton Park, Lilydale, Pakenham, Ringwood & Rowville.
THE Healesville Action Group (HAG) is very concerned to see that Yarra Ranges Council has commenced a planning application to change the status of the council-owned parkland on the corner of Currawong Rd and Rosella Crt in Healesville. This land was donated to the Shire of Healesville as a public open space, for use by the residents of Healesville, as part of the land subdivision surrounding it. This move by the Yarra Ranges Council to change the reserve status of this piece of land to residential status, so that it can be sold to boost the council coffers is most alarming. Does this indicate that every piece of public open space land, like this one, that is used for passive recreation is now open for sale by the Yarra Ranges Council? This area where the kids and grandkids of residents can play in complete safety because it is overseen by several residences, or take a walk or throw a ball, is to be denied to residents by this action. What is the council reason for wanting to sell this land? It is too small an area.
Well who said so, has council got a policy that says that all parkland must be large? So are we to interpret all the talk in the current C148 Planning Scheme Amendment about enjoyment and recreation in our parks and open space, Clause 21.07-3 Public open space and recreation, is just that, all talk. HAG calls on the Yarra Ranges Council to immediately withdraw this inappropriate application. John Rosser, Healesville Action Group.
CINDY McLeish presented facts relating to Leadbeater’s Possum (Mail, 18 August); however, she has drawn incorrect conclusions that the previous Coalition Government’s actions were good for Leadbeater’s Possum. At first glance, 341 possums found since they were elected in 2010 compared to only 548 records of Leadbeater’s Possum in the 27 years before looks encouraging. However, these two numbers are not comparable. Since Black Saturday, there has been increasing concern for the possum, resulting in a dramatic increase in surveys. Surveys have nearly all been conducted in locations where we expected to find possums and detection technology (such as cameras) has improved. Despite the rhetoric that it will “challenge long-held views”, our science has always shown Leadbeater’s Possums live in young regrowth forests. But the critical part Cindy omits is they only persist where old hollow bearing trees have been retained. Large old trees are the critical habitat resource for this species; hence the ANU’s most important recommendation was the protective buffering of all old trees to prevent loss during post logging regeneration fires or subsequent wind storms. The Coalition’s cynical terms of reference for the Leadbeater’s Possum Advisory Group (LPAG, which incidentally included VicForests CEO, VAFI, government, but no possum experts) excluded this most critical measure because it would impact too severely on the timber industry. David Blair, Healesville.

By JOHN WOOD THE end of winter as we know it, but not at the Woods Point Gun Club for the August Maori Creek Championships. A bit of sun and a relatively mild day heralded the soon-tostart spring weather. Sponsors for the day were club members, Peter and Ellen West, Mick Ward, and Chuck and Linda Lay. Mick Ward was back to his best again, while Barry McKenns shared the cash prize for the Eye Opener, 29/30 each. The first event was a 15-target Silent Rise, where the targets are released with a random time delay after the shooter mounts their gun. Ken Skinner mastered this
By JAMIE STRUDLEY KIARA Flavel is the latest Australian Champion at Yarra Ranges after a devastating finish to claim gold at the Australian Cross Country Championships, held at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Competing in the 10-year-girls 2000m, alongside fellow club member Maddie Laven, Kiara produced an outstanding finish to move from fourth to first over the final 400m. Maddie was not far behind, finishing in an outstanding fifth place to earn a team gold. Other Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes competing were Georgia Laven (12th under-14 girls 3000m), Ruby Dixon (27th under-14 girls 3000m), James Laven (28th under-16 men 4000m and a team bronze), Veida Somerville (28th open women 8000m) and Amanda Branson (7th women 40-plus). Lucas Taylor and Lee Taylor competed in the Australian Road Walking Championships on Sunday. Next up for Yarra Ranges Athletics is the registration day on Saturday 12 September. delay to score a perfect 15/15 to take the championship sash outright. After a shoot off, Trevor Ewert took second place, 23/24, from Ian Findlay, 22/24 with Ward in fourth place 16/18. The main event was a 25 pair Deauville Doubles with a team of two shooters, four shots, two targets. Broken pairs only to count. Best scores were 22/25 pairs and after a short shoot-off the team of Phillip Desmond and Mick Ward won the event, 27/30 with Ian Findlay and Geoff Hill in second place, 26/30. Peter Lang and Lachlan O’Hallaran took third place 30/40 after shooting off against David Frazer and Daniel Chinn, 27/40 for fourth place.
The day was completed with a 20 target Continental Championship where Hill took the sash, 18/21 from Findlay 17/21. Ron Press took third place 17/20 after having to leave early and missing the shootoff. Seven shooters on 16/20 vied for fourth place with most missing targets early, but O’Hallaran and Ward continued until the youth of O’Hallaran took the prize with a final 29/33 from Ward 28/33, who was fading at the end of the day. Ian Findlay had a good day’s shooting to take the Overall High Gun 53/60 from Ward 52/60 and Desmond, 51/60. Junior footballers shine By PETER DOUGLAS SOME of the most talented junior footballers in the region showed their skills at Woori Yallock over the weekend. For many, it would have been the most important game of their burgeoning football careers as they kitted up, warmed up and turned out for the grand final decider in the Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League. And, there was some fantastic football played, with some great results and wonderful individual performances. Among the winners on the day were Monbulk (Under 11s), Healesville (Under 12s), Ferntree
Gully (Under 12s Girls), Gembrook (Under 14s) and Mount Evelyn (Under 16s). It goes without saying that this high level of football would not have been possible with the many coaches, umpires, administrators and parents who put in countless amounts of hours. The end result is some fantastic young footballers who are enjoying participating in sport with their friends and family.

Juniors come up trumps on big stage IT finally arrived, the Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League grand final. After having a week off, the Healesville under-12s faced off against Gembrook in the decider at Woori Yallock. After a few days of persistent drenching rain, it was a relief for all to arrive to a bit of sunshine and a surface that was remarkably dry. The Healesville team was deter-
mined to get a fast start this week against a super-competitive, hardnosed Gembrook outfit, and the under-12s got the job done in fine style. After a hotly contested opening, the midfield worked hard to give the Healesville forwards a chance to hit the scoreboard and Healesville went in a couple of goals up at quarter time. The Healesville running game
got going in the second and third terms, with the backline really standing up and giving plenty of drive. Gembrook continued to challenge Healesville on every line but in the end, weight of numbers and a super team effort saw the Healesville unit run out comfortable victors. Congratulations to Gembrook on a fantastic season; and to the
Healesville team for a sustained, season long performance that saw them finish the year undefeated. Healesville 9.6 (60) d Gembrook-Cockatoo 2.2 (14). Goals: H. O’Brien 3, A. Amarant 2, J. Garvey, S. Gebert, F. Lever, A. Hyde-Thomas. Best: J. Swaney, H. O’Brien, J. Howie, S. Gebert, F. Lever, A. Amarant.

Step closer towards glor y Division 1 Seniors Healesville 6.4 (40) d Monbulk 6.3 (39) (qualifying final) HEALESVILLE has held on to win a thriller in what was trying conditions where goals were almost impossible to come by. Healesville led by just one goal at quarter time, but they then didn’t score in the second term while Monbulk only scored one major which tied scores at the half-time break. The third quarter was a beauty with both sides hitting every contest at a furious pace. It was two goals apiece for the term, but Healesville did get their nose in front as they led by just one point. The last quarter was a hard slog with scoring becoming very difficult, both sides scored 1.1. for the term, which was enough to see Healesville salute, come final siren which means they will now take on Wandin next week for the right to play off in the grand final. Monbulk will get one more chance as they will battle against Olinda Ferny Creek. Healesville best players: J. Goding, B. Miller, R. Woodford (3 goals) Monbulk best players: D. Ward (1 goal), S. term while they booted four. They then held Woori scoreless in the second quarter while they added another four goals to their total to lead by a matchwinning 44 points at the main break. The third quarter was more of the same as Woori only registered two behinds while Olinda booted three goals to lead by an insurmountable 61 points. The last quarter did see Woori outscore Olinda 3 goals to 1, but Olinda was well and truly in control as they now look forward to taking on Monbulk next week in another cut throat final.
Seville 10.9 (69) d Thornton Eildon 9.13. (67) (1st semi final) SEVILLE’S final campaign will continue after they held on to beat Thornton in a thriller by just two points. Seville opened the day well, booting 4 first quarter goals to Thornton’s 2 to lead by 13 points at the first change. The second term was a tight affair with both sides adding two goals and at the long break Seville’s lead was just 12 points. The third term was a real tight affair with goals hard to come by, there was only one goal apiece scored for the quarter and Seville’s lead was just 11 points. The last quarter did see Thornton try to open up the play a bit more as they started to go on the attack, and it did start to pay off as they began to reduce the margin, they booted 4.4 for the term and looked as though they just may pinch the game but Seville’s 3.1 was enough to keep their noses in front come final siren. Seville will now take on Kinglake next week with the winner advancing to the grand final to battle against the awaiting Emerald.

Emerald was great early as they had their running game up and going. They booted 7 goals to 1 in the opening term to set the tone for the day. Emerald only booted four goals in total in the following two quarters, but they were able to hold Kinglake to just one major in that time which saw their lead stretch out to a massive 59 points at the final change. The last quarter saw Emerald finish the day off well as they added another 5 goals to Kinglake’s 2 to win big. Emerald will now await the result of Kinglake and Seville next week with the winner to play off against Emerald the week following.
