Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius says police must reach out to the community. 143853. Pictures: GARY SISSONS
■ Police say they will continue to reach out to overcome extremist ideologies...
Radical solution AFTER the shockwaves of 18-year-old Numan Haider’s fateful attack on officers in Endeavour Hills nearly 12 months ago, police are refusing to “retreat in a fortress”, says the region’s top cop. Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius, who oversees the Southern Metropolitan police region, told the Journal: “Since Endeavour Hills, our outreach in the community has grown very significantly. “We actually see that as a much more effective way of dealing with the risk we face. “We police for the community and in the community. We don’t want to retreat in a fortress.” The Haider incident – as well as an alleged plot to target police at an Anzac Day service in Dandenong this year – highlighted the need to go out and “explain what we do and answer the community’s questions”. “We were changed as a result of the Endeavour Hills incident (and the Anzac Day threat). “It brought home to us the nature of the risk we face.” It led to an escalated awareness of police officers’ personal security and a review of security at police stations in the region. Mr Cornelius said there was currently no identified, active threat against police. “There’s nothing out there that would cause me to say we will withdraw our outreach and engagement.” In the aftermath, Star News reported on some of the police’s outreach efforts such as cross-cultural seminars between officers and community leaders. At the end of Ramadan, police – including Superintendent Russell Barrett – helped a Doveton mosque’s members hand out food to neighbours.
“
WE NEED TO BE REACHING OUT TO THESE INDIVIDUALS AND FIND WAYS TO RECONNECT THEM TO THE COMMUNITY… Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius
Mr Cornelius said he was looking forward to the state Coroner’s findings so that the public could learn “as transparently and accountably as we can” what happened on 23 September 2014 at Endeavour Hills Police Station. It was widely reported that Mr Haider, influenced by Islamic State propaganda, was fatally shot by police in self-defence after he stabbed two officers with a bladed weapon in a premeditated attack. Mr Cornelius described disengaged youth as one of two main priorities; the other was the region’s high rate of family violence. He said the best response to young people wishing to harm police and the public was a positive narrative counteracting a “negative narrative from other sources”. Mr Cornelius said young people within the Muslim community were not the only ones at risk of being seduced onto harmful paths. There were also problems with outlaw motorcycle gangs recruiting young Pacific Islander “muscle” or Reclaim Australia and United Patriots Front radicalising youth. Part of the challenge was for alternative education and work opportunities for young people who were at risk of falling through the cracks. “We need to be reaching out to these individuals and find ways to reconnect them to the community.”

Bail refused after spray flame threat By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN accused of threatening his Dandenong South ex-partner by lighting the spray from an aerosol can near her face has been refused bail. The man had been on appeal bail at the time after being sentenced to four months’ jail on 24 August for family violence intervention order breaches against the victim. Police informant Senior Constable Nathaniel Gilmore told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday (31 August) that the man was found intoxicated outside the victim’s home one evening last week. He had been banned under an intervention order from being within 200 metres of the victim’s address if he was alcohol affected. Sen Const Gilmore said the ac-
cused admitted drinking three bottles of 18 per cent alcohol “shaken premium smoothie mix”. The man told police he was accustomed to drinking a bottle of bourbon a day. Earlier that day at 1am, the man allegedly visited the address and asked the victim to accompany him to a Dandenong bottle shop to buy two bottles of alcohol. After initially asking him to leave, she complied and drank with him on the banks of Dandenong Creek. The court was told the man became frustrated with his ex-partner and punched the right side of her head. She was followed home by him despite telling the man to leave. At her home, he picked up an
aerosol can and lit a flame near her face. The victim alleged she could feel heat from the fire but was protected from injury by her cap. The man then left and was arrested by police when he returned that evening. Sen Const Gilmore said the man’s mother was happy to have him stay with her in Mulgrave but “it’s her belief that ... there’s no doubt he’d commit further offences”. He told the court the man took advantage of the victim’s acquired brain injury. Defence lawyer Bernard Keating conceded his client had a “significant history” of family violence towards the victim. Mr Keating said there was evidence the man was drunk near the
victim’s home but denied the other allegations - which were similar to others yet to be heard at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court. “He denies he was with the victim at all. There doesn’t seem to be any supportive evidence for those allegations.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the man had previously breached bail, community corrections and intervention orders. “I can’t see anything here at all that he’s complied with.” Mr Vandersteen imposed a full intervention order and refused bail because of the man’s persistent breaching of intervention orders against the victim “not over days but over years”. The man was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 21 September.
Kids stump up for the spirit of pirating By CASEY NEILL SWASHBUCKLING fun is on offer in Keysborough this month to pay tribute to the world’s Peg Legs, Blackbeards and Long John Silvers. Somerfield’s one-acre pirate playground will host its second annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day event from 10am to noon on Sunday 20 September. Kids are encouraged to dress up and get into character as there’ll be prizes for the best-dressed pirate and best pirate impersonator. Intrapac Projects chief operating officer Max Shifman said he hoped residents and visitors got into the spirit of the day. He said Captain Jack Sparrow, Wilma the wench and Pirate Pearl the face painter would make appearances. “There will even be a pirate tattoo station, balloon twisting, a chocolate treasure hunt and a pirate ship jumping castle for the kids,” he said. Somerfield Social Club volunteers have organised the event with help from Intrapac. The pirate playground is on the corner of Somerfield Drive North and Newbury Street, Keysborough.
IN BRIEF Sex attack witness call POLICE are pleading for a teen named Jordan to help them find a violent sexual predator. Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Walsh said a woman struck up a conversation with two men at a bus stop near Lonsdale and Langhorne streets, Dandenong, about 1am on 21 August. She described one as of African descent, about 19 years old and 193 centimetres tall. He was wearing a grey beanie, black jacket, denim jeans and black Nike runners. The other was Caucasian and aged between 14 and 17 with brown or blond hair. He was wearing a jacket with a hood and a baseball cap and is believed to be named Jordan. “For some unknown reason, the African male turned extremely violent,” Det Sen Sgt Walsh said. “A very serious sexual assault took place in the bushes area.” ‘Jordan’ fled and from across the street shouted for the man to get off the girl. Det Sen Sgt Walsh said passers-by stopped to intervene. He said it didn’t appear ‘Jordan’ had done anything wrong and urged him to come forward, along with those who rendered assistance. Mohammad loves his world of Middle-Eastern food By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS DISHING up delicious MiddleEastern cuisine out of a one-man kitchen six days a week is no pressure, says well-travelled chef Mohammad Jordy. Zaytoun, his recently-opened homely cafe is a “holiday” compared to cooking for up to 2000 diners in big hotels in New Zealand, Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan. But don’t be fooled into thinking that Jordy is now going through the motions. This is high-class, generous food at an affordable price. His traditional dishes such as felafel, hummus, kofta, labni and
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL fatteh are prepared from scratch with highest-quality chick peas, beef and fava beans. They are fastidiously presented on attractive platters with mixed pickled vegetables - including searing chillis - and olives imported from the Middle East. The biggest surprise is Jordy’s nod to ‘Australian’ cuisine - a topquality scotch fillet steak with French fries and ultra-creamy mushroom sauce.
He said he used to serve such steak for $49 when he cooked in a Docklands restaurant earlier this year. At Zaytoun, his 200-plus gram serves of freshly-cleaved steak are astonishingly priced at $13. That’s as expensive as this place gets - most of these uncommonly fine dishes are under $10. Understandably it’s getting a loyal following from steak lovers in the area. There is also a loyal legion of diners who say the Middle-Eastern dishes are the best in the south-east. Personally, I haven’t found a better, lighter felafel - an incredibly soft chickpea mix infused with cotton oil
and enclosed in a crispy shell. Jordy said he is inspired by several master chefs who took him under their wings, as well as by his mother who used to put “so much love” into her food. Even under the pressure of waiting and cooking for up to 20 customers, Jordy said he makes food with “a smile on my face”. “I don’t hide in a corner - I like to talk to people. “I make friends all over the world.” Zaytoun is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30am to 9pm at Railway Parade, Noble Park.

LOOKING BACK The Journal 100 years ago 2 September 1915 A Reception at Dandenong For Australian Wounded Soldiers A meeting was held at the Dandenong Town Hall on Monday evening for the purpose of making arrangements to entertain about 200 of the wounded Australian soldiers recently returned from fighting the Empire’s battles at Gallipoli. There was a large attendance and Mr Field suggested, in view of the crowded state of the Council Chambers, that the meeting adjoin to the Town Hall, which was agreed to. The Chairman Cr Pearson read a circular letter which he had received suggesting that a motor trip might be arranged at Dandenong on Saturday next. He had also to inform them that a meeting of residents had been held on Saturday when it was decided to convene a public meeting for that evening, the announcement being made at the various churches and at the picture show. They had therefore met to arrange for the
reception of wounded soldiers when they arrived at Dandenong on Saturday and he felt sure the people of Dandenong would not be behind in the matter. The soldiers would arrive at 3.15pm and that afternoon tea might be provided at 3.45pm, the departure of the men being fixed at 5.15pm. A list of eatables had been furnished and cigars and cigarettes would be acceptable – the men did not want biscuits, they had had enough of them already. That day the councillors had donated £4/8/- and the best part of a box of cigars. He hoped the reception would be carried out in a manner worthy of the Town of Dandenong. Cr Keys said that it was estimated that £40 would be required to provide for entertaining the wounded soldiers, moved that 2 committees be formed, comprising of 20 ladies and 10 gentleman. 50 years ago 8 September 1965 Time stands still for Trio
‘They let the rest of the world go by’ While the world has progressed from horseless carriages to whispering jets, a little bit of Australia has peacefully stood still for three old Dandenong residents. Ida, Bert and Hilda Blackmore – brother and sisters – were born, brought up and have lived all their lives at 104 Kirkham Rd, a road that was named after their mother’s family. All unmarried, Ida is 77, Bert 74, and Hilda (‘the baby’) is 70. The farthest they have been from their home is Orbost, Victoria. Over the years their home has been renovated, but part of it – vertical red-gum weatherboards – still stands as it was originally built some hundred years ago. 20 years ago 11 September 1995 Truck Crash A runaway truck left a trail of destruction when it crashed into a freeway medium strip at Endeavour Hills, mowing down trees, poles and bushes in its path. He was treated for “non-life threatening” multiple injuries at Dandenong Hospital. 5 years ago 6 September 2010 Weapons seized A double–edged dagger, flares and several butcher knives were part of the day’s haul from a police operation at Dandenong railway station. As part of Operation Browny, police frisked 85 people on Thursday in search of illicit drugs. A 51-year-old man was charged with possession of drugs. Twelve people will be charged on summons for drug offences, such as possession of speed and cannabis. Eight cautions were issued and two arrests made for drunkenness in a public place. -Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Left stranded By CASEY NEILL WAITING for a bus isn’t usually a years-long task. But that’s exactly the situation Keysborough South residents are in, with bus bays at their doorsteps yet to fulfil their purpose. Keysborough South Action Group is kicking off a petition in a bid to change the situation, with no funding for a bus service allocated in this year’s State Budget either. “We’re petitioning because there is nothing within three kilometres and it’s isolating the community and it’s limiting job opportunities for young people,” spokeswoman Nina Kelly said. Keysborough South resident Josie White said her teenage son, 13, caught a private school bus to access education. “We were looking at another
school, but we didn’t choose that school because that school bus would only go to Parkmore,” she said. She worries about his ability to access work in the near future. “If he wants a part-time job it would be ideal if he could just get on a bus,” she said. No bus service also limits his access to shopping and recreation time with friends at Parkmore Shopping Centre. “You can walk there but you have to cross the bypass and Cheltenham Road, so it’s a bit of a hike to your local shops,” Ms White said. Her eldest son needed to reach work in the city after his car broke down. “We had to drive him to Noble Park or Westall Station,” she said. “He would have to get a cab home if no-one was around.
“That made it really difficult.” Her daughter studies at Australian Catholic University. “She has to drive to the station and leave her car and then get a train,” she said. “There’s so many houses. You’ve got the demand.” In March the Journal reported that prior to the state election, Greater Dandenong Council had proposed a low-cost Keysborough South bus route linking schools, homes and places of worship with stations. At the time, South Eastern Metropolitan Region Greens MP Nina Springle told Parliament that the suburb’s teenagers would become “isolated and disadvantaged in terms of work and education if they do not get a bus service soon”. “Meanwhile, their grandparents are moving back in with the families and they need pub-

Medals and memories By CASEY NEILL IRENE Difesa brought home much more from the recent World Transplant Games than four medals three gold and one bronze. The Dandenong kidney transplant recipient said she’d trained hard for the success she achieved in Newcastle, England, last month. “But then my medals are so insignificant compared to the people I met and the friendships I made,” she said. “It was an amazing experience. I met some amazing people.” Ms Difesa, 43, battled nausea and dizziness from severe jetlag to take on competitors less than half her age to win gold in her main event, squash. She also took home gold in shot put and discus and claimed bronze in volleyball. About 900 competitors took part in the games while 2500 people watched on and showed their support. “I compete because wherever we go we try to spread the word about organ donation, to thank the donors,” Ms Difesa said. She met a couple with a daughter, 10, and son, 12, who were both born blind. She said the girl needed a kidney transplant and in the process of being tested for compatibility, her father found out he had a tumour. The boy now also needs a transplant. “We were just gobsmacked to find that one family could be burdened with such hardship,” Ms Difesa said. “They weren’t whinging or carrying on. They were smiling, happy to be there. “That was one of the highlights for me.
“It was a very grounding and humbling experience.” On 6 April, the Journal reported that the community Ms Difesa has lived in for 34 years had rallied to help her get to the games. Support came from her boss at Le Mans Go Karts in Dandenong South, her friends, hair dresser and financial advisor, and Dandenong South Primary School, where she went to school and her son now attends. Ms Difesa has previously competed at the World Games in Sweden and four national games. Penrith in New South Wales will host the next national games and the next international competition will be in Spain. But she’s not sure if she’ll be there. “It was tough leaving my children behind. Right now I’m just happy to be home with my kids,” she said. At age 19, Ms Difesa went to her GP with fluid retention in her legs and received medication. “But it got to the point where I was struggling to breathe - fluid had got onto my lungs,” she said. Another doctor performed a blood test that found her kidney function at 5 per cent and a biopsy confirmed the autoimmune disease lupus. Ms Difesa endured three years of chemotherapy but it was too late to save her kidneys. She needed a transplant and four hours of dialysis three times a week in the interim. She received one from her mum on 17 January 1998. “The average transplant lasts about 10 years - 17 years later I’m still here,” she said.
Police would like to speak to this man.

POLICE are searching for a thief who shopped with a stolen credit card in Dandenong and Keysborough. Investigators believe a man forced entry to a vehicle parked on Stadium Circuit, Mulgrave, sometime between 6pm on 7 July and 4am on 8 July. He stole a bank card from the car’s centre console and allegedly used it at a convenience store on Princes Highway, Dandenong, at 5am on 8 July. Police believe he again used the stolen card at a Princes Highway, Keysborough, convenience store at 6.20am. There the thief was seen in a late-model silver Kia Sportage. He was wearing a black top, jacket and hat, and blue jeans. Police urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

HOONING on the Dandenong Bypass shocked Nicole from sleep just days after she moved into her new Keysborough home. Her experience is nothing new, so she and neighbours are calling for a new approach. Nicole, who did not want her surname published, moved into a home near Perry and Church roads on a Friday. “That night we heard maybe three cars around the midnight mark,” she said. “Saturday was just out of control, from 9.45pm through to 2.30am. “It wakes you up. It gives you that really loud shock. “Some residents have made the comment that you get used
to it. “The most frustrating part is that everyone’s given up. “People bring chairs. This is organised racing. “It seems a bit odd that it’s organised and no one can stop it.” Nicole is worried that somebody will get hurt. “If someone happened to be driving down there and got caught up in it ... ” she said. In a statement, Keysborough South Action Group said the issue had persisted for nearly three years. “It starts on Thursday and continues Friday and Saturday nights between 11.30pm and 3am,” the group said. “When will the ‘harmless fun’ turn into a tragedy? “It would be great if San-
Playgroup project in line for cash A PLAYGROUP project could bag $15,000 for Greater Dandenong Council. The council’s Family Health in Playgroups trial was announced on 31 August as the only finalist for the More Family and Child Friendly category at the Victorian Early Years Awards. The winner will receive $15,000 to develop and share its project learnings.
Community services director Mark Doubleday said the project was a pilot aimed at helping vulnerable families to access community services. “This was achieved by a maternal child and health nurse attending playgroups to provide information and referral pathways,” he said. “Overall, the nurse attended 15 playgroups three times each across the 33 weeks of the pro-

down was utilised similar to the street drag racing program at Calder Park, to allow drag racers a place to safety let off steam.” Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Smart said police had “quite a few things planned” to combat hooning. He said burnouts were common in industrial areas and driving at high speeds was taking place on Princes Highway as well as the Dandenong Bypass. “We’re currently running operations on both with support from the entire region,” he said. Sen Sgt Smart said there were “big operations coming up”. “It’s at the forefront of our minds,” he said.

Linked to the past By CASEY NEILL THE Dandenong Pioneers Memorial Garden honours the area’s early settlers. The council built the monument and garden at Stuart and King streets in 1976 and with help from the Dandenong and District Historical Society selected 29 pioneers to honour on the dedication plaque. Names include those recognisable from Dandenong’s streets: Clow, Lonsdale, Langhorne, McCrae, Foster, Thomas, Wedge, Keys, Power, Kirkham Walker, Kidd and more. Bluestone quarried from the Churchill National Park, behind the Dandenong Police Paddocks Reserve, forms a cairn on which a tablet rests. Two large bronze signs with the park’s name are positioned at its boundaries and there was a bluestone sun dial installed in about 1980 to celebrate the Rotary Club of East Dandenong’s 75th anniversary. Dandenong and District Historical Society’s Carmen Powell in 2004 led a campaign to save the park, earmarked for car parking. Former society president and Noble Park resident Murial Norris, 92, remembered the park opening. “I was involved in the

could meet friends and rest a while.” Journal columnist and society member Jack Johnson reminisced about the rural Dandenong of old in a letter about the park in 2004. He said it was the only small piece of central Dan-
denong not under bitumen or building and he thought of it as a retreat. “This small precious piece of land is the only remaining piece of earth and gums in central Dandenong that links us with the past,” he said. “This treasure this is not
just a stone monument to be moved elsewhere, but a living, breathing remnant of our Australian landscape, in which our pioneers and their families and descendants created Dandenong. “It is part of our history and it is part of our future.”

A NEW school zone is on the cards for Keysborough. Greater Dandenong Councillor Roz Blades said students from Maralinga Primary School - which closed earlier this year - were now crossing Chandler Road to reach Chandler Park Primary School. “I understand that the 40 kilometre sign which related to the Maralinga Primary School has been removed,” she told the 27 July council meeting. “But because the Chandler Park Primary School does not exactly take anyone directly to Chandler Road, there is a bit of difficulty in getting a 40-kilometre sign there.
“There is a large number of children that come from Chandler Park onto Chandler Road. “It is a very busy and dangerous road.” Council engineering services director Julie Reid said she would investigate the issue. Chandler Park Primary School acting principal Naomi Reed said she would like to see a 40km school zone sign on Chandler Road. “There was one further up at Maralinga where you crossed over to the school there,” she said. “It’s a busy street, too, with the secondary college entrance there. “The school council has dis-
cussed it on many occasions. “We have a lot of congestion and it’s a little bit of a path through to the shopping centre.” VicRoads Metro South East transport and planning director Con Stasinos said he appreciated the issue being brought to his attention. “VicRoads will review the eligibility of a 40km/h school speed zone at the flagged school crossing on Chandler Road, near the intersection of Cochrane Avenue,” he said. “We will work with Chandler Park Primary School and council to understand the pedestrian movements of students following the closure of Maralinga Primary School.”

and said: “You’re all welcome.” A JUDGE at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court seemed bemused that an accused intended to plead not guilty after court security had detected a flick knife in her handbag. Her lawyer claimed that the accused had had the knife in her bag for the past 12 months and had forgotten it was there. “How can you forget that you have a flick knife?” came the magistrate’s rhetorical retort. ASSISTANT Commissioner Luke Cornelius recently gave rare access to the Star News to his office in Dandenong Police Station. We noticed quite a few eyecatching ornaments such as a flying pig statuette on the front of the assistant commissioner’s desk. On the wall were two striking photos of a green parrot. To our surprise, the images were captured by Mr Cornelius, who happens to be a keen photographer. The species of parrot? Why, acorneliusparrot, ofcourse.•
ALEX Woller has no trouble taking a complement. The award-winning apprentice was a guest speaker at the Lunch with the Winners motivational event in Springvale last week. MC James Sturgess said he saw Alex receiving his Chisholm Apprentice of the Year award - wearing a suit for the first time. “You looked sensational,” James said. Alex quickly replied: “I did.” IN HIS role at Dandenong manufacturer Actco-Pickering, Alex makes window pillars for Bombardier V/Line trains. James asked if anyone in the crowd had been on a V/ Line. “The reason you got to stay in the train was because the window didn’t fall out, and the reason it didn’t fall out was because of Alex,” he told those with their hands up. Alex turned to the audience
THE region’s top cop also revealed he was no fan of commercial TV. When asked about a report on the Seven Network’s Sunday Night program, he asked: “Is that on commercial television?” It’s on Sunday nights, the reporter proferred. Mr Cornelius replied: “I only watch adult television.”
GREEN thumbs have got a workout at Uniting AgeWell in Noble Park. About 12 people from the planned activity group, called Scott Club, potted a cherry tomato on Monday 31 August. Uniting AgeWell’s Leanne Bydes said Bunnings Springvale team member Andreja brought along the pots and plants and lent a hand. “Then she revamped all our pots - put new soil and new little plants in, just to spruce it all up,” she said. “It was fantastic. It will be an ongoing thing with Bunnings now,” she said. Ms Bydes said the clients were enthusiastic. “Some of them wanted to do more than one, and they did them for others that weren’t so capable of doing it,” she said. The Scott Club takes its name from the Uniting Church that stood in Scott Street, Dandenong, and ran a similar program. - CASEY NEILL

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… SURELY the only project in the running for an award will be taking home the prize? Greater Dandenong Council was announced as the sole finalist for the More Family and Child Friendly category at the Victorian Early Years Awards but won’t find out if it’s been successful until 28 October. An Education Department spokesman said the judging panel felt the council’s Family Health in Playgrounds nomination was stronger than the other nominee for the category and it was more appropriate to put just one finalist forward.

Council defends ‘leak’ By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong Council says it has acted “appropriately” in response to claims it leaked a record of a confidential meeting to assert that a traders’ group supported on-street parking meters in Springvale. Springvale Asian Business Association spokesman Stan Chang has accused the council of being “totally unethical and unprofessional” in a letter to councillors and council executives. He claims his “personal” and “off-thecuff” view given during a “preliminary and confidential chat” with council officers in 2013 was later misrepresented by the council as SABA’s “green light” for the meters. “It was under no circumstances that I gave my support on SABA’s behalf,” Mr Chang said.
“I have to make it very clear that council has not sent SABA any formal proposal on the matter and that local traders have not been properly consulted.” SABA has driven a petition campaign, collecting about 2000 signatures in opposition to the meters. The council has argued the meters are needed to improve traffic and parking flow in central Springvale while opponents said the meters - expected to yield $900,000 a year - will drive away customers. Julie Reid, the council’s engineering services director, said: “In relation to this matter, all correspondence and information has been managed appropriately.” “We have reconfirmed with SABA that they are a very important stakeholder in the success of Springvale and we look forward to continuing our work together to take Springvale towards an exciting future.”
Stan Chang has accused Greater Dandenong Council of “unethical” leaks.
Mr Chang told the Journal that he was not surprised by the council’s denial of wrong doing. “They say they haven’t done the wrong thing but what I tried to indicate in my
message is they haven’t done the right thing. “But they say they want to work with SABA in the future - I take that as quite genuine.”
Squeals and splashes of delight as students dive in By CASEY NEILL BLIND or vision impaired students have dived into free, specialised swimming lessons in Dandenong. North Lodge Swimming Academy with support from the Rotary Club of Dandenong South East will hold weekly classes for students from Berwick school Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired. Pool head coach and managing director Leanne Byron said the swimmers at an introductory session on Saturday 29 August were “so inspirational and extremely responsive”. “They loved the smell of the pool, the feel of the water and the sounds of happy people,” she said. One girl said the pool reminded her of a pool in Italy. “And she thought the mini pool filter sounded like a piano,” Ms Byron said. “The squeals of delight and the splashing and swimming around in the pool made it all worthwhile. “How exciting for these children to have the opportunity to enjoy the water and its relaxing qualities.” Ms Byron said the children had other challenges in addition to their vision problems, including autism, fragile X syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). “These children gave us such joy - they are caring little souls, full of life, inquisitive, at times cheeky and extremely courageous,” she said. “Our introductory day was a great success. “We are all looking forward to continuing our work with these children.

“Exploration in the water is so important for children learning to swim - if it’s not fun they’re not always willing to give new things a try.” Insight principal Timothy Hemphill said there was an atmosphere of “celebration and excitement” during the class. “Parents and helpers delighted in the sheer joy and fun the students were having in the pool,” he said. Ben, Josiah, Noah and Christian donned new caps and goggles and teamed up with their personal instructors for individualised lessons. “Ben was our navy seal,” Mr Hemphill said. “He was diving into the deep end for submerged rings and celebrated every catch he made with his mum nearby, as he burst through the water again and again holding his prize above his head.”
He said Noah had a grin from ear to ear as his instructor took him on swimming activities up and down the pool. “Josiah got stuck straight into his lessons and was soon doing breathing exercises and practising his swimming strokes with a kickboard,” Mr Hemphill said. “Christian managed to scope out every inch of the pool, eager to know every angle and architectural feature of the pool itself - the diving blocks were particularly fascinating for him.” Dandenong South East Rotarians cooked up a sausage sizzle after the lesson that lured the kids out of the pool. “When the lessons finished and time in the pool came to an end, none of the children wanted to get out,” Mr Hemphill said. “They had all developed quite an appetite, managing to wolf down more than

Golf club homes on hold for minister PLANNING Minister Richard Wynne has not ruled out Keysborough Golf Club’s proposal to turn its green-wedge course into a housing estate. A spokeswoman for the Minister at the same time affirmed his preelection pledge to maintain the south-east green wedge. She said any plans for the 76-hectare golf course site were “yet to be considered” by Mr Wynne “The Andrews Labor government has committed to maintaining and enhancing the green wedge and, while we will not pre-empt any decisions, future applications would be considered with that pledge in mind.” Keysborough Golf Club captain Darrell Swindells said he would not comment at this stage. He has previously told the Journal that the plan - which involves moving out to a yet-to-be built golf course and training centre about 2.5 kilometres away at 256-356 Pillars Road was “far from a fait accompli”. Under the move, the current site would be sold to developer Intrapac subject to the state government agreeing to rezone it for residential development. If it procceds, the club and its shareholders were expected to yield $40 million. Defenders of the Green Wedge secretary Barry Ross said he “took great heart” from the comments from Mr Wynne’s spokeswoman. Mr Ross said the golf club was one of several south-east green-wedge proposals on Mr Wynne’s “plate”, including a Kingston Council application to rezone a nearby tract of land for residential development directly across Springvale Road.

1 Owner, 6 Offices all working hard for you. Dear home owners on current plan to put your property on sale or lease don’t hasten to sign any relating contracts! •Our service is Professional, Wholehearted and Truthful • Free Appraisal for your property • Regards to procedures, professional Lawyers disposed to care for Section 32 won’t claim any fees if your property sale is unsuccessful* * Conditions apply
We have over 38 staff. We speak more than 10 different languages. We will guide you to owning your first home, your ideal family home. And we will guide you in the best way to invest in the current real estate market!
LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY INVESTMENTS? We are 1 principal owner of 6 offices in the franchise network of over 700 offices
Chris, Roeun and Robert Testimonial The approach at LJ Hooker Glen Waverley is completely different and extremely refreshing. LJ Hooker has handled my properties for a long time and they are by far the best property managers I have ever worked with. They understand the market as well as the needs of both owner and tenant. They found several tenants for my properties and on all occasions I have been extremely happy with the tenants and also the level of service. When there have been maintenance issues, the property manager has found quality, professional tradesmen and no job has required re-work. On one occasion when the tenant caused the maintenance issue, they worked with them to resolve the problem. Having lived interstate for the past 12 months I could completely relax about my properties, knowing LJ Hooker Glen Waverley would look after them. I would not hesitate to recommend the LJ Hooker Property Managers Roeun, Chris and Robert to anyone who is seeking a managing agent. Yours sincerely, Chris and Jennifer Anderson
The Property Management team at our 6 offices are known for being highly organised and highly adaptable. All three managers have over 15 years of experience in the real estate industry. The team is hardworking conscientious, pride themselves on the level of care and attention to all tasks. Undertaking stringent tenant selection, the team is responsible and efficient; LJ Hooker team ensures that the portfolio runs as smoothly as possible. They understand that property is a major investment; their client needs to feel their property is in safe hands and that it will be managed meticulously
We are pleased to introduce our Property Management team of our 6 offices:

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Ideas get set to work By CASEY NEILL “JUST expect your life to be absolutely full of changes.” This was the advice from MC James Sturgess at the annual Lunch with the Winners at Sandown Racecourse in Springvale on 1 September. The SEBN and South East Local Learning and Employment (SELLEN) presented four successful young people to a room filled with Year 9 and 10 students from the Lyndale, Noble Park and Hampton Park secondary colleges, Hillcrest Christian College, Dandenong High School, Chisholm Institute, Emerson School and the Narre Warren and Carwatha College P-12s. The event showcased their different journeys through school and into work to raise awareness of possible career pathways. SEBN manager Sandra George said there were abundant job opportunities in Greater Dandenong. “Don’t let anybody tell you manufacturing is dead and dying,” she said. “It is the backbone of the country. “There are many ways to get where you want to go. “It’s not a straight line. It’s a very zigzag line.” Ms George said communication and problem-solving skills and getting along with co-workers were keys to employment. SELLEN CEO Andrew Simmons said businesses were looking for employees with the right attitude. “They know they can teach the right person,” he said. He said 88 per cent of people with a bachelor degree were employed. “If you have a Certificate III and IV you’re just as likely to be employed,” he said. But employment rates for those who don’t complete Year 12 drop to 66 per cent. “And the better your English, the higher the rate of
Satisfied passion for work By CASEY NEILL MATTY Deane gets paid to holiday around the world. It’s a dream job, but he’s walked a hard road to get there. Matty, Alex Woller, Elliott Altmann and Alek Nyok shared their stories with Year 9 and 10 students from the south-east at the annual Lunch with the Winners. Matty wasn’t academic and “never turned up” to school so had few option after VCE. He liked the idea of personal training but friends told him there was no money in the career path. After deciding on teaching - purely for the holidays - he developed a cough. Doctors diagnosed him with cancer at age 24. With eight months of chemotherapy and two months of radiation ahead of him, Matty moved home with his mum. He listened to people complain about their days, didn’t see his friends, could feel himself getting weaker and depression started to set in. “They were filling my head with negativity,” he said. “I hadn’t realised how powerful negativity could be.” A nasty reality check on the scales prompted him to act. He moved out to engagement,” he said. “Our employers really need you to be able to communicate in the workplace.” Mr Simmons warned students that they might need to travel to access a job - that 27 per cent of people who worked in Greater Dandenong lived in Casey and only 20 per cent of Greater Dandenong workers lived in the municipality. Futurist Marcus Barber spoke

His burning passion was to travel the world, so he found a way to make money from it. “I work until I’m tired and I travel until I’m bored,” he said. “That’s my philosophy.” Alex Woller, 20, won last year’s Chisholm Apprentice of the Year and Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Youth Enterprise Award. He said a passion for his job and a strong work ethic were the keys to his success. “I just do what I enjoy,” he said. Elliott Altmann, 23, moved to Mel-
bourne from country Victoria to study robotics and mechatronics. “I chose robotics because it was a bit of everything,” he said. His uncle and the day’s MC James Sturgess said Elliott wasn’t a model student. “It just shows that you can change your attitude,” James said. Elliott also served as an example of using personal networks to find a job. He was too busy designing and building a race car - which earned him a PACCAR Award for his design efforts - to apply for work. His brother recommended him for a graduate engineer job with a civil construction company. Alek Nyok, 23, came to Australia
about potential future careers. “Programming is one of the biggest growth areas in medicine right now,” he said. “You will create the type of jobs that we knew nothing about.” Mr Barber said the world’s biggest problems - access to food, shelter and water for all were yet to be solved. “But maybe you’ll be the generation that can,” he said.

Arterial roads and transport are in his blood Inspired to lead By CASEY NEILL BERWICK truckie Craig Membrey was born with transport in his blood. The managing director of Membrey’s Transport and Crane Hire in Dandenong South on Saturday 29 August received recognition for his lifetime behind the wheel. He was among almost 300 people inducted to the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at National Road Transport Hall of Fame 20th anniversary celebrations in Alice Springs. The nod acknowledged Craig’s achievements and lifetime commitment to the transport community. “It was an unbelievable feeling,” he said. “You couldn’t believe how many people were there.”
Craig’s father Jack started J and N Membrey and Son in 1962. “My dad was in trucks all his life,” Craig said. “I think I was born with transport in my blood and it just went from there.” He’d help out his dad every weekend. “I left school at 14 years old. It wasn’t meant for me. I went to work for dad,” he said. Craig tried a number of jobs elsewhere after “a few blues with dad”. They’d been talking about working together again when his dad had a stroke. That was 26 years ago and Craig has been running - and expanding the family business ever since. “I wish he’d left me
a lolly shop sometimes, it’d be less stressful,” he said. The company had about five pieces of equipment when he took over which has since grown to 120, including forklifts, cranes and crane trucks across Australia. “I’ve picked a good team who follow my dream,” he said. Since Craig’s eldest son Rowan took his own life in 2011 he’s devoted his time to raising awareness for depression through Beyondblue. “It’s a big honour to be involved in flying the flag,” he said. “I want to get more involved in Beyondblue where I can. “I’m a bit of a makeit-happen man.”

School dads on the menu By CASEY NEILL STUDENTS have shared breakfast with more than 60 dads, uncles and brothers at Spring Parks Primary School. The school’s two Springvale campuses held the Father’s Day event on Thursday 3 September. “We held a similar one for our mums in May and it was a huge success,” principal Julie Fisher said. “We were thrilled with the turnout.“ The event started at 8am to cater for dads who had to get to work, but Ms Fisher said some workplaces had allowed the breakfast-goers a late start. “After the children had fed their fathers they were allowed to come back and get a plate of food for themselves,” she said. Sausages, bacon, eggs, muffins, raisin bread, toast, tea, coffee and juice were on the menu. “We had a father’s day staff yesterday at both campuses where the children could bring in some money and buy something for dad,” Ms Fisher said. Each class also made Father’s Day craft projects.

Auctioneer has it hammered SPRINGVALE real estate agent Harry Li has brought the hammer down on his opponents to win a prestigious auctioneers’ award. Mr Li, who is the director of McDonald Real Estate, Springvale, won the Australasian Auctioneering Championships at a gala event held at Crown on Thursday. Competitors from New Zealand and Australia conducted mock auctions in front of industry peers as they vied for the cross Tasman crown. It is 10 years since a Victorian competitor has won the top title so it was fitting that Mr Li’s performance impressed the judges in his home town. “I was stoked. It’s still sinking in,” an elated Mr Li said. Mr Li competed last so he didn’t get to see his rivals’ performances, but he is sure only a technicality would have separated the competitors, such was the calibre of the field.
Top auctioneer Harry Li. “I had good momentum and good energy going into the final. “In the end it comes down to fine margins, little technicalities.” It was third time lucky for Mr Li who used his past failures to win the title as a springboard
for this year’s success. “It’s surreal. It was one of those moments I had dreamed of. Because we hosted the conference in Melbourne, it is a like a fairy-tale that someone from Victoria could win.” The win will help boost Mr Li’s profile both here and in New Zealand. Mr Li has been conducting auctions for seven years, and brings down the hammer on six or seven properties every week. He said auctions were the real estate industry’s “showtime”. “To be a good auctioneer you’ve got to have professionalism, friendliness and confidence but not arrogance. “You have to build rapport with people instantly and also be accurate with numbers and enjoy doing it.” The annual championships are conducted jointly by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand and the Real Estate Institute of Australia.

SEABL - East Conference Final
Four on the floor By JARROD POTTER FOUR conference basketball titles in six years. The domination of Dandenong’s SEABL women continued on Saturday evening as Larissa Anderson’s charges got out of the blocks early and stayed out to claim the East Conference title with a 75-55 win over Geelong. After letting the Supercats get away in the first half of their SEABL semifinal last month, the Rangers made no such error this time around, with a conference pennant and a place in the SEABL grand final - on Dandenong’s home court no less - on the line. The clamp-down work on Sara Blicavs (13 points) - who will don the Dandenong green-and-gold in this year’s WNBL competition - was exceptional as the Australian Opals’ representative was given no inch by Dandenong’s perennial defensive elite. Clare Papavs (15 points), Alison Downie (4 points) and Faith Probst (4 points) - Dandenong’s integral frontcourters throughout the prolonged success this decade - made sure Blicavs struggled to get good looks and always had to contend with one of the three in her face, and at times more than that. Evergreen Jacinta Kennedy (16 points, 14 rebounds) continued her 2015 SEABL rampage in the key knocking in her 11th double-double of the season to put her hand squarely up for All Star Five consideration. It all started early for the Rangers pushing out to a 14-4 lead and steadily the advantage swung in their favour. Not much went right for the Super-
cats as Blicavs, Rosie Fadljevic (10 points) and Tayla Roberts (2 points) struggled to get their shots up in the key, with the Rangers swarming defensively. A 43-30 rebound count highlighted the efforts of Dandenong’s fortresslike defence - but it wasn’t just the defenders relishing the conference final. At one stage the match threatened to balloon out to 30 points following a complete Dandenong onslaught through the third, but to Geelong’s credit the visitors played out every minute and forced Dandenong to earn its title, and with it, a place in SEABL’s 2015 finale. “It was four quarters of defence and that’s exactly what our target was before the game,” coach Larissa Anderson explained. “We obviously worked on what they were going to throw at us defensively to counter that offensively - as I thought we were very undisciplined against them two weeks ago. “For the girls to bounce back that way at both ends, showed just how much quality is in this team. “It wasn’t the prettiest game... but I think the refs let them play at times… I thought both teams put on a really good spectacle and I’m so proud the team showed up for four quarters.” Dandenong will now face Kilsyth in Saturday evening’s SEABL grand final(12 September), after the Cobras - led by Endeavour Hills-born point guard Steph Cumming (21 points) defeated Bendigo in a 79-77 thriller on Saturday. “One more to go - this has been an absolute fairytale for us,” Anderson said.
Aimie Clydesdale powers to the hoop in the Rangers’ thrilling victory. 143999
Dandenong’s fourth SEABL East Conference title in six years was taken Saturday evening with a resounding Pictures: JARROD POTTER 20-point win over Geelong. 143999 “Credit to the teams last year, but we feel that was one that we let get away a little bit too. “We’ve taken that all through this
season - that hurt that we weren’t used to last year - and to the girls’ credit, to have only dropped three games so far is a phenomenal effort.
“To have that kind of success with a core group of girls over that long is something we’ll be able to cherish and hold with us forever.”
BIG V - Grand Final Series
Four for Dandy
Year of the cat By JARROD POTTER IT TOOK every ounce of Keysborough’s combined resolve, but after 18 home-and-away games and six nailbiting finals the 2015 Big V championship was earned. Finally earning a senior men’s pennant to hang from the rafters at Springers, the Cougars put behind them so many near-miss seasons and countless finals performances to pick up their inaugural flag. Steeling themselves for a monumental challenge against Western Port - culminating in two grand final clashes across the weekend (29 and 30 August) - Keysborough threw everything it had at the minor premiers to push them to the brink, especially on the Sunday with the visitors taking the championship with a 66-53 triumph. It could’ve turned out pear-shaped for the Cougars, after conceding a 15-point lead on Saturday night to lose the second grand final clash 80-81. The loss forced the series into a third-anddeciding match, but the Cougars rallied to resume their usual high-tempo tactics - running out to an 18-1 lead in the first term - which put the Steelers to the wall early.
Keysborough coach Nathan Vogt predicted his side’s leg-speed and stamina would wear down the Steelers. The Cougars outran the opposition through the first half - once again posting a sizeable lead at the main break 43-29, with thoughts of Saturday night’s capitulation not entering the equation. Neither side covered themselves in much glory through the third term - as field-goal shooting fell rapidly and fouls mounted on both sides. But Keysborough kept its stranglehold for one last term - all but negating Western Port’s output in the fourth term to take the emphatic 13-point championship victory. “We knew all along if it was going to go to a third game that we went deeper and would run them off the floor and in the end that’s exactly how it panned out,” Vogt said. Co-captains Adam Sliwinski and John Constance were thrilled to get the championship victory after years of toil - including the heartbreak of the 2012 grand-final series defeat. “It’s pretty amazing - I’ve been playing for 14 years but to finally get over that hurdle and achieve our ultimate goal is a pretty surreal experience and I’m enjoying every moment,”
All in for the win, Keysborough stood as a team rising as one to claim the 2015 Big V Division-2 Men’s championship. 143707 Picture: JARROD POTTER Constance said. “Especially after a year like 2012, we took our key points from there… we wanted to make sure that we had a different result,” Sliwinski said. Steelers’ talls Peder Whelan and Dylan Walsh struggled to stay out of foul trouble, leaving it to ephemeral Western Port guard Manny Hendrix (28 points) to burden the effort. But Keysborough’s rotation roster didn’t focus so heavily on individuals - part of its greatest strength. Vogt threw the ball around for the final time in 2015 as Adam Sliwinski (14 points), Aaron Stirton (11 points), Rob Ostojic (7 points) and Steven Haddrell (6 points) made their shots
when called upon. While everyone stood up in the final, it was mighty Malcolm Heard (20 points, 17 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) who rose above the rest. Arriving in the league for the first time in 2015, Heard averaged 20.8 points and 10.6 rebounds throughout the season but saved one more doubledouble for his crowning moment on Sunday. It made for a mighty celebration for Vogt - who was pivotal in the creation of the club a decade ago and has coached the side since - and he believed it was a just reward for all the hard work put in by everyone behind the scenes.
VAGARIES of the draw placed all four Dandenong-based football clubs in finals on Sunday afternoon (6 September). Noble Park will go up against Vermont in the Eastern Football League Division-1 elimination final. Keysborough will play Caulfield in the Southern Football League Division-2 elimination final. St John’s will play Old Paradians in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Division-2 preliminary final. And last, but not least, the Dandenong Stingrays will go up against the Murray Bushrangers in a TAC Cup qualifying final. The Dandenong Journal went to print on the Sunday afternoon - well before these matches would be completed. Representatives from local Dandenong District Cricket Clubs and the Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club will also be available on the day to provide details of their respective junior programmes, training sessions and fees, etc. The City of Greater Dandenong in conjunction with funding partners Cricket Australia, Cricket Victoria and the State Government will launch their Ticket2Cricket programme at the Come and Try Day which enables all new junior cricketers who have never been registered on the My Cricket system to a 75 per cent rebate of their clubs fees (MiloIn2 Cricket, T/20 Blast, under 11s, 13s and 17s). A great incentive by all stakeholders to increase junior participation within the City of Greater Dandenong. Come along on Sunday and participate in the free clinic with lots of fun activities and giveaways and find out how you can become part of a cricket club. Badada free to run By JARROD POTTER UNBRIDLED freedom has given upand-coming athlete Sifan Badada a chance to run for his dreams. Fourteen-year-old Badada, from Noble Park, emigrated from Ethiopia a couple of years ago to join his father and has loved every moment since he touched down. With the ability to do whatever he wants in Australia - unchecked by extreme poverty or political censorship that ravage his birthplace - Badada decided to strap on the cleats and give athletics his undivided attention. After Badada and his father moved to Noble Park, the pair was out running when spotted by athletics coach Corey Pendry... and the rest as they say is history. This time however it’s history in the making as Badada continues to push up the athletics rankings in Victoria with high-level success on the horizon. The Springvale Little Athletics Centre dynamo has won regional medals in triple jump, the 800 metres and 400 metres and finished seventh at the state championships and is rapidly improving. His athletics career has only just started to blossom, but Badada has already been recognised by the council as the Greater Dandenong Male Sports’ Athlete of the Year at the inau-
gural Sports Awards earlier this year. “It’s great, very awesome,” Badada said. “I was choking, I couldn’t believe it (winning the Sports Athlete award). “I’ve just got freedom (in Australia) - political, everything - and I would love to run for Australia internationally.” Badada’s coach Corey Pendry said his work ethic and discipline make him a joy to coach and there’s no limit to his athletic potential. “It was quite a surprise - he was just running around with his father and I had my training squad down here with about 10 kids and I said to just join in, the kids just fell in love with him as he came every single day to training… so it was good,” Pendry said. “I reckon he could be one of Australia’s best - he’s in the making and he wants to learn and has inspirations to go to the Olympics, still complete VCE and go to Haileybury. “He’s been a great contributor to my squad and it’s just fantastic to see him grow and develop as an athlete but also as a student - he runs with his heart and when he studies he just does everything with 100 per cent and nothing less.” Badada wanted to thank his coach Pendry, Springvale Little Athletics Centre and Haileybury Athletics Club for their ongoing commitment to him.
Sifan Badada has come a long way, both athletically and geographically, as he proudly shows off his Greater Dandenong Sports’ Athlete of the Picture: JARROD POTTER Year award. 143415
The perfect pet By JASON ADAMS THE ever-consistent Rugall has continued his good run of form, making it back-to-back wins on Thursday evening (6 September) at Sandown Park. Rugall was fast to begin from box one and established a two-length break down the back straight. He was only challenged in the later stages of the race however hung on to win by a head in 34.62. Trainer Benny Briffa was full of praise for Rugall. “He’s a great chaser and puts in everything that he’s got - he’s gone from strength to strength throughout his career. “When he first started racing he was only a tier-three sprinter but I’ve put a lot of time into him and he has come a long way since then,” said Briffa. Rugall boasts an impressive record having won seven and placed in 16 of his 34 career starts. “It’s funny he’s only missed a placing twice out of 14 starts over 595
metres at Sandown though he always seems to be at big odds.” Owners of Rugall have witnessed his rise first hand ever since he was a pup, and love watching him do what he does best. “There’s a group of about 10 that own Rugall, they have owned him since he was a pup and educated him - they just love watching him race and always have their $10 each-way on him.” Briffa only has three greyhounds at his property in Coolaroo and uses a local straight track in Broadmeadows to work his greyhounds. “I give them a 400-metre run up the straight, they love to chase the car as I drive alongside them. “I like to keep my dogs fresh but Rugall is a bit different, he just loves running.” At the end of Rugall’s racing career Briffa will be forced to make an influential decision. “At the end of Rugall’s career I’ll have a big problem, as all the owners are debating over who will get to keep

Pirates are Dandy By JARROD POTTER
The South East Titans’ women’s tackle team celebrates its inaugural premiership. 144000

We are all family By JARROD POTTER REMEMBER the South East Titans, for they have just created Victorian Rugby League history. With Victorian Rugby League (VRL) expanding the women’s game to full tackle in 2015, the Dandenong-based team entered the record books as the first side to claim a women’s tackle premiership. Battling cross-town rivals Casey Warriors in a Saturday grand-final showdown at Casey Fields, the sides played out the first - of hopefully many - thrilling women’s tackle finales as the Titans took a 10-8 triumph. It was an uphill battle for the South East side but they managed to squeeze ahead through tries from
Oceani McGee and Krystel Williams. Casey Warriors didn’t go away though, as the home side also claimed two tries. McGee’s boot turned the match on its head as she booted the only goal to push the Titans ahead and take the title. Titans’ captain Ramina Matenga could not be prouder of her side, which is an on-field extension of her family. “We’re stoked - we were the underdogs and we just worked hard, stuck together and stayed together in the end,” Matenga said. “I think the dedication to each other - we’re family and just having each other’s back and staying hard we’re a very hard team.
“We’re proud we’re a fresh women’s league and hopefully it grows from here.” Metenga thought Lisa Schuster was the side’s standout player - not just for the grand final but throughout the inaugural women’s tackle season - and should be an Australian representative. The Titans community has grown dramatically in recent years - moving to Greaves Reserve and adding a men’s 1st Grade team - Matenga put it down to the community atmosphere at the club. “You don’t just take yourself, you take your entire family,” Matenga said. “It’s just about sticking together.”

Lewis-Smith dreams of Dragons By JARROD POTTER TALENT has pushed Perry LewisSmith to the peak of junior football... but his determination and discipline will help him achieve just as strongly in the senior ranks. Lewis-Smith, 16, capped off his 11th and final junior football season in emphatic fashion. The Parkmore Pirates’ Premier-2 captain brilliantly signed off on his South East Juniors (SEJ) journey - helping his side to an 80-point grand-final victory over Fountain Gate, with his 44-possession, three-goal performance making him the fitting choice for the best-on-ground medal. And it wasn’t a solo effort, as the skipper also had six goal assists to support his Pirates’ crew in the clash. Two nights later Perry-Smith finished equal-first on 27 votes in the SEJ league best and fairest to round off the amazing week. “I was pretty excited - I’ve came second a couple of times, so I was really excited to win the league best and fairest this time,” Perry-Smith said. “It was my last year and probably my best year as well, so I was really stoked with how the weekend, and during the week, went.” It makes for an amazing end to 2015 but even more astounding considering he only just switched over to the Pirates this year to improve
A sensational South East Juniors season was capped off with three amazing accolades for Parkmore’s Perry Lewis-Smith. 144001 Picture: JARROD POTTER his football and was asked by the coach - former AFL footballer Rick Bean - to join the side... and also become its captain. “The only reason was the coach Rick Bean,” Lewis-Smith said. “He’s probably one of the best junior coaches in Australia and he got in contact with my parents and
he got me over.” While an elite athletic and footballing pedigree - including strong state-level finishes in athletics and cross country and wins at the Dromana Pier to Pub and Frankston MiniMarathon - is worthy of celebration, Lewis-Smith remains humble and prefers to keep focused on the tasks
ahead of him. “I never really get overly excited about things - I’m happy about them, but never really show it,” Perry-Smith said. “But of course I’m over the moon with what I’ve achieved.” He’s not sure where he’ll play his local football next year, but he’s already got his eyes set on the next big challenge - running out for the Sandringham Dragons in the 2016 TAC Cup competition where he hopes to push for a consistent spot and aim towards the AFL in years to come. “I’ve achieved plenty and I’m looking forward to the future and what it holds - my goal is to play AFL football and I’m going to have a great pre-season this year, try to get on this Sandringham list and see how I go next year,” Perry-Smith said. “It’s a great way to finish off my junior career going into senior footy next year I was just really happy - I felt I had a really strong year, one of my better years.” He wanted to thank Rick Bean, Michael Palma and everyone at the Parkmore Football Club and his parents for their support. “All the clubs I’ve been to and been around, the Parkmore culture is definitely the best I’ve been around - with the way they helped me out and have supported me this year,” Perry-Smith said.
IT WAS a Dandy day at South East Juniors grand-final grounds, with two teams from Greater Dandenong winning premierships. Parkmore Pirates’ Premier-2 side - comprising under-16 and under-17 players plundered everything in the Fountain Gate defensive end to boot 13.12 (90) to 1.4 (10). The Pirates held the underdogs goalless until the final term as nothing would best the premiership-claims of the rampaging Parkmore brigade. Pirates’ forwards Jacob Bakes and Harrison Bean booted four goals each in the grand-final victory while captain Perry Lewis-Smith (3 goals) starred for Parkmore to earn an additional medallion as the grand final best-on-ground medallist. “Three flags in five years for these boys with back-to-back flags in under-12 and under-13,” Parkmore president Michael Palma said. “This year they were on top all year - lost their first and only game the last home-andaway round, by two goals to Endeavour Hills then beat them in the semi-final the next week. “It was a great win for the boys and I’m sure the league will put them up into Premier 1 next year and under-17s there will probably only be the two divisions. Palma said the win was a great boon for the Pirates, who are starting to turn the corner results and membership-wise after a few hard years. “Five teams in our own right, one combined with Fountain Gate in under-15s, so to get three teams in the finals - including the girls in their first year - was amazing,” Palma said. “It was a great day for the club and great day for junior football in the area.” In an all-Dandenong under-13 Division-3 grand final, Noble Park managed to knock off its cross-town rivals North Dandenong in a 6.4 (40) to 4.1 (25) thriller. Bulls’ Ilias ‘Road Runner’ Panagiotou received the beston-ground medal. The Bulls had to hold on against the wind as they only kicked one behind after the main break, but their ironclad defence ensured the Sharks could not swim away with the trophy. “For a side that was supposed to finish last or second last, to finish on the ladder and take out a grand final was a good day - pretty happy with that,” Noble Park coach Mick Carlsson said. “We dominated the first half and in the third quarter the boys became complacent but North Dandenong only scored a couple of points, but had the majority of the ball. “It was a bit of a game of wind so to win a grand final and only score one point in the second half was a great effort… good on the boys.” Carlsson also highlighted the performance of his side’s gun girl - Esma Gonullu - who stormed the packs in both finals and was crucial in the Bulls’ win after a dynamite last term. “She runs in the back line and dominated in there,” Carlsson said. “Six contested marks in the third quarter of the first semi and stopped them scoring… she was just as good in the final quarter yesterday. “She can kick it 45 metres already at under-13s and she crashes packs - doesn’t give it up for nobody.” Carlsson wanted to congratulate the umpires on a fantastic performance letting the game run smoothly and also the support of parents, players and everyone around the club as well as the opposition. The under-11s Pirates were the other side from the area in the big finale, but weren’t as lucky in their pursuit of the title, casting a mirror image of the elder Pirates’ result in a 23-point loss to Berwick.

MOTORING
Time to release the beast THE newest Jaguar is overtly sporting in every way - mostly good ways, but some not quite so good; more about the latter in a moment. Jaguar’s distinctive large grille, slim headlights and long bonnet lead back to a coupe-like roofline then down into the sweetest part of the car, the short bootlid with an unobtrusive rear spoiler. It’s not all about style; the drag coefficient of 0.26 is excellent, due not only to the sleek body, but also the almost completely flat underfloor. Inside, the XE is elegant, with a sporting binnacle directly in front of the driver, a central infotainment screen and subtle ventilation outlets. We particularly like the raised area that runs all they way across the lower area of the windscreen that’s looks for all the world like an extension of the stereo speakers. Rear headroom is marginal for anyone over about 175 cm, a drawback of the coupe-like shape. Legroom will be limited if you’re sit-
The stunning shape of the all-new Jaguar XE will create plenty of sales. ting behind a tall driver who needs their seat well back. Compromises between those in the front and back seats are necessary. Not unusual in sports sedans, and many Jaguars of the past haven’t exactly been spacious machines. About three quarters of the XE’s body is made from aluminium, however the doors are in high-strength steel. We were initially surprised to find the Jaguar XE isn’t a lot lighter than other vehicles in its class - think
Audi 4, BMW 4, Mercedes C - until the Jaguar engineers explained the aluminium was used to provide maximum rigidity, not low weight. That rigidity gives the suspension a very stable platform on which to work, thus letting it dampen road shocks to let the small Jag grip hard in corners without sacrificing ride comfort. Cornering is brilliant, with electric power steering that’s arguably the best, most intuitive, we have ever felt.
However, driving is marred by thick windscreen pillars that blocked too many times. Comfort is surprisingly good considering the fact that the suspension leans in the direction of sportiness. Jaguar XE in Australia is powered by four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines in two different stages of tune, producing 147 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, or 170 kW / 340 Nm, then there’s the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol with 250 kW and an enjoy-
able 450 Newton metres. Borrowed from the F-Type, the supercharged V6 the XE S is capable of doing the 0-100 km/h acceleration test in just 5.1 seconds. While the XE S sounds pretty good when hammered hard we really would like more volume, please! Those seeking big torque and small consumption can buy an ultra-modern turbodiesel, again a four-cylinder unit displacing 2.0 litres. It gives you 132 kilowatts and torque of 450 Nm. The latter spreads from 1750 to 2500 revs. All Jaguar XE models imported to Australia drive the rear wheels through a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is sold in some markets but none will be imported to Australia, not even on special order. The model range starts with the $60,400 XE 20t Prestige and runs through to the V6 S at $104,200. With superb styling and stunning chassis dynamics the Jaguar XE seems highly likely to steal plenty of sales from the big three German marques, as well as the Japanese Lexus.
Model range 20t Prestige: $60,400 (automatic); 20d Prestige: $62,800 (automatic); 25t Prestige: $64,900 (automatic); 20t R-Sport: $64,400 (automatic); 20d R-Sport: $66,800 (automatic); 25t R-Sport: $68,900 (automatic); 25t Portfolio: $70,400 (automatic); S V6: $104,200 (automatic).
