“My key frustration is we have a regulatory framework that doesn’t support us making the case that we need less alcohol in the community, not more. “I find it passing strange that we have to prove that another liquor outlet in our community will cause harm. “I would think in any legal system the proponent would have the burden of proof on them, to prove that their outlet won’t cause harm.” A spokeswoman for Dan Murphy’s – which is owned by Woolworth’s – said the development would bring more than 40 jobs and offer a “convenient new service” for a growing population. “We strive to be Australia’s most responsible drinks retailer and actively pursue strategies to support responsible drinking and harm minimisation. “We are listening to community concerns and await the decision of the (VCGLR).”

and Casey council are opposing a planned 1800 square meter Dan Murphy’s outlet at 1S Linsell Boulevard, Cranbourne East. Aldi Stores has also applied for a liquor licence at the same under-construction shopping centre. Mr Cornelius said he expects the police’s submission will cost a “fortune” and it will fail at the part-heard Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) hearing. “I have every confidence that ‘Big Liquor’ would win at considerable cost to our community.” The assistant commissioner blames the “ridiculously permissive regime” under the VCGLR. He said it has allowed giant packaged liquor outlets to target disadvantaged communities. It is a system that rewards “people motivated by profit, on the back of the misery of others”, Mr Cornelius said.

YOU’VE been warned, Shane. Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius, the south-east metro region’s top cop, is taking aim at Shane Warne and the nation’s “idiotic” attitude to excessive alcohol drinking. He points to Warne’s persistent line of questioning to Australia’s victorious World Cup cricketers in March when he asked how “thirsty” they were. “To change our attitude, we need people like Shane Warne to change their attitude,” Mr Cornelius said. “That idiotic linking of excessive drinking of alcohol in celebration isn’t on. It has to stop.” He blames packaged liquor outlets which he said account for 75 per cent of alcohol-fuelled crime in the south east. Yet these outlets comprise just 10 per cent of the region’s 3000-plus liquor licences. Research has found a close correlation with alcohol-related family violence. “The vast, vast, vast majority (of packaged liquor) is consumed in the family home,” Mr Cornelius said. “The main game is around how we negate excessive volumes of liquor being put out in our community and driving up offending.” Mr Cornelius said he would like the outlets subject to similar restrictions as licensed bars and pubs – which limits deals such as two-forone offers. “If I had a magic wand, it would be to put the excessive marketing and consumption of alcohol back in balance. “But this isn’t a police issue, this is a community attitudinal problem.” For those reasons, Victoria Police

HOSNIA Mohammad couldn’t sew in a straight line three years ago. Now her couture creations will be in the fashion spotlight at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week and the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival. The Narre Warren mother of three designed and produced one of five winning collections in a collaborative competition between Kangan Institute, Red Cross and Fashion blogger Le Blonde Fox, AKA Adriana Perri. Contestants transformed Red Cross donations into unique outfits for Adriana and her photographer Dermie McIntosh to wear at key fashion events. Winning designs will also feature in a window display at the Red Cross retail shop in Bridge Road, Richmond. “You’re all so talented I’m forever grateful to wear such beautiful pieces ... you all have such big futures ahead of you,” Adriana said. Hosnia’s designs featured more than 330 hand-sewn flowers made from old bedding and butterflies cut from printed pyjamas. She made a top made from a pants leg with the cuff as a collar on one side, and transformed curtains into a floorlength lace jacket. “I don’t decide what I’m doing, it just comes by itself,” she said. Hosnia moved to Australia from Afghanistan in 2004 and married her husband. “I was working with the United Nations. I was already speaking English,” she said. “I’d never been to Australia before. It was a new city but things were fine. “I could speak to people, I could go out and talk to people.” She taught at a TAFE in Tasmania, studied and worked in administration

Police’s radical moves Rescuers Briefly

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AFTER the shockwaves of 18-yearold Numan Haider’s fateful attack on officers in Endeavour Hills nearly 12 months ago, police are refusing to “retreat in a fortress”, says the region’s top cop. Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius, who oversees the Southern Metropolitan police region, told Star News: “Since Endeavour Hills, our outreach in the community has grown very significantly. “We actually see that as a much more effective way of dealing with the risk we face. “We police for the community and in the community. We don’t want to retreat in a fortress.” The Haider incident - as well as an alleged plot to target police at an Anzac

Day service in Dandenong this year highlighted the need to go out and “explain what we do and answer the community’s questions”. “We were changed as a result of the Endeavour Hills incident (and the Anzac Day threat). “It brought home to us the nature of the risk we face.” It led to an escalated awareness of police officers’ personal security and a review of security at police stations in the region. Mr Cornelius said there was currently no identified, active threat against police. “There’s nothing out there that would cause me to say we will withdraw our outreach and engagement.” In the aftermath, Star News reported on some of the police’s outreach efforts

such as cross-cultural seminars between officers and community leaders. At the end of Ramadan, police - including Superintendent Russell Barrett - helped a Doveton mosque’s members hand out food to neighbours. Mr Cornelius said he was looking forward to the state Coroner’s findings so that the public could learn “as transparently and accountably as we can” what happened on 23 September 2014 at Endeavour Hills police station. It was widely reported that Mr Haider, influenced by Islamic State propaganda, was fatally shot by police in selfdefence after he stabbed two officers with a bladed weapon in a premeditated attack. Mr Cornelius described disengaged youth as one of two main priorities; the other was the region’s high rate of family violence.

He said the best response to young people wishing to harm police and the public was a positive narrative counteracting a “negative narrative from other sources”. Mr Cornelius said young people within the Muslim community were not the only ones at risk of being seduced onto harmful paths. There were also problems with outlaw motorcycle gangs recruiting young Pacific Islander “muscle” or Reclaim Australia and United Patriots Front radicalising youth. Part of the challenge was for alternative education and work opportunities for young people who were at risk of falling through the cracks. “We need to be reaching out to these individuals and find ways to reconnect them to the community.”

POLICE have released CCTV footage of an explosion in Skye last month believed to be a homemade bomb. It understood anyone near to the explosion may have suffered from injuries similar to being peppered with PVC fragments, flash burns or hearing damage. Emergency services were called to a reserve bordered by Sanoma Drive, Danube Close and Santa Clara Mews, just before 6am on Saturday 29 August, after witnesses heard a large bang believed to be the detonation of an explosive. An arson chemist also attended the scene to investigate the incident. The footage shows a car in the area at the time, believed to be a small 4WD similar to a Jeep Cherokee, Toyota RAV4 or Ford Escape and is likely to have received damage to panelling and/ or windows on the driver’s side. WHEN a child is involved in a trauma - be it a collision, house fire or other unpleasant incident it often helps for them to be able to hold onto something for comfort. And, thanks to the Cranbourne Lions Club, Cardinia Highway Patrol has just the gift that may dry up their tears. The Lions club donated 10 ‘trauma teddies’ to the road patrol group on Thursday 3 September in an effort to help kids in despair. Sitting snug in the back of officers’ cars, these bright and soft teddies are a first-time donation to Cardinia Highway Patrol. Having already helped kids that required emergency assistance by the State Emergency Service (SES), Ambulance Victoria and Casey Hospital’s Children’s Ward, Lions Club District Governor and Cranbourne member Ian Gration hopes the donation will make a difference to kids in crisis. “They help the kids calm down ... it’s surprising how kids will stop crying once they have something to hold onto. It changes their perspective on things,” he said.

Spirit drives hard work By LACHLAN MOORHEAD SENIOR Sergeant Ron Sinclair was made the latest recipient of the Juan Carlos Loyola Community Award last month. It is the third year the award has been handed out to a local resident who has shown longterm dedication to the community. It is named after Juan Carlos Loyola and sponsored by Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan. Carlos has run the Doveton Special Soccer School for the past 20 years and works tirelessly to help the community. Carlos and Ron have a lot in common. Senior Sergeant Ron Sinclair has been the president of the Victoria Police Soccer Club (VPSC) since 1995, acting as the driving force for all of its charitable and community contributions. Over the years he has been instrumental in organising initiatives to develop community partnerships, foster positive public relations, raise funds for charitable institutions, and remember

the lives and sacrifices of fallen police members. Ron was pivotal in setting up the Tynan/Eyre Cup to commemorate the lives of murdered constables Steven Tynan and Damian Eyre, which has raised more than $65,000 for the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation. Ron also has a strong partnership with the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, running sausage sizzles and a soccer skills clinic each Good Friday. VPSC has been recognised as a major partner of this event, raising more than $100,000 for the appeal. Carlos commended Ron on his selfless contribution to others. “Ron has been tireless in his efforts in giving back to the community and raising funds for numerous charities in order to support those less fortunate,” he said. Mr Donnellan also praised Ron, saying “it was an absolute pleasure to recognise and thank his community spirit and hard work”.

Former students urged to call in for a catch-up By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S been 10 years, maybe even 20, since old Cranbourne Secondary College pals have seen each other. Now they can break the ice again with a 20-year reunion next month. The graduating year of 1995

will be getting together to reminisce the past 20 years at Settlers Run Golf and Country Club on Saturday 10 October. Having caught up just 10 years ago, reunion organiser Andrea Clifford said 10 years on the task of organiser has been made easy with social networking site Facebook.

“I’m using the list I made from the year book 10 years ago and contacting parents who live in the same home. “I’ve called numbers I have on file hoping it’s the same number and emailed the school but Facebook has made it much easier,” Ms Clifford said.

So far 70 out of 185 students, including those who didn’t graduate in ’95, have accepted the invitation for a catch up. Ms Clifford said the night will include a PowerPoint presentation with old photos and videos from their school days, finger food and a DJ.

Fransisco Cerros and his wife, Charlene, at the launch of the Towards Zero campaign. all be aiming for.” Francisco’s wife, Charlene, said her family were “terrible with secrets” but had managed to keep it from him this time. “It’s really hard keeping it from him ’cause he’s my husband, he’s my person, I tell him everything and this whole week I haven’t had that,” she said. “Just the first time we walked around the corner as a practice, so he wasn’t even there, I was getting teary because the end was near. I could tell him everything.

“I knew he could get really emotional. Or my main thought was I think he’s just going to be in shock because all of his family were there, and he understands how momentous that is. “When you do personalise it, when you do think, hang on if you think 70 people is an alright number ... yes it’s lower than what we have but when it’s your 70 people, it’s a massive difference.” The Towards Zero campaign is supported by the government’s new Towards Zero Road Safety Strategy to be launched later this year.

Roads Minister and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan was at the second annual Towards Zero Road Safety Leadership Symposium last month, where the campaign was launched. “We realise Towards Zero sets an ambitious target but unless we’re working towards the highest possible benchmark, Victorians will continue to lose loved ones to road trauma and we can never accept that,” Mr Donnellan said. “If we’re not aiming for zero, we are saying to ourselves that there is an acceptable level of road trauma.”

1176287-CG11-15

LAST year 249 people died on Victorian roads - what is a more acceptable number? Narre Warren’s Francisco Cerros was asked this question in TAC’s latest road safety advertisement. His answer was 70. At this point in the ad, which is part of the State Government’s new Towards Zero campaign, 70 of Francisco’s friends and family walk around the corner and approach him. With tears brimming in his eyes, Francisco changes his answer to “zero”. “They told me it was going to be an in-house training video to be used for the TAC,” Francisco said afterwards. “I thought it was just going to be a general question-and-answer type thing but then when they asked me what the road toll should be and I said ‘70’ and then they showed me what 70 people were and it was my family, I mean that was ... that was emotional. “When you see your family and you see their faces and you link that with the road toll it makes it very personal.” Francisco is not an actor and he had no idea his family and friends were around the corner when he gave his unscripted response. After the ad was shot, Francisco voiced his support for the Towards Zero campaign. “Every accident on the road can be prevented,” he said. “We as motorists, as drivers as pedestrians, we need to pay attention, be aware of what’s going on and zero should be what we should

I read with interest that Premier Daniel Andrews visited the Casey-Cardinia region regarding the construction of new primary schools. What the Premier failed to say, however, was that he did not pay for the new schools. These schools were actually paid for in 2014 by the former Liberal-National Government. The Premier’s rushed visit to discuss the construction of these schools was just a feeble attempt by him to draw attention away from the current crisis facing his government. The extraordinary allegations of rorting of government funds by ALP MPs shows that this new government is faced with yet another major crisis. The State Government should be focussed on the needs of Victorian families. The Premier needs to stop fighting with his own colleagues and start listening to the needs of this community. Nick Wakeling MP, Shadow Minister for Education.

Ian Gration from Lions Clubs International said he was hoping to sell 20,000 badges. 143936 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Measles jab fund-raiser 100 other children who aren’t vaccinated, 90 of them will get measles,” Mr Gration said. “In Australia, your kid gets measles and they’re home for about 14 days. In third world countries, it can lead to things like blindness. It results in ongoing illness for the rest of their life.” Mr Gration is planning to sell the badges at markets across Kooweerup, Tooradin and Berwick over the coming weeks. The project began this year and will go through until July 2018. A badge is $5. For more information, contact Ian Gration on 0419 894 974.

TO HELP eradicate measles, Lions clubs are hoping to raise $60 million. Local district governor for Lions Club Ian Gration from Cranbourne is selling badges to raise money to help vaccinate 120 million children against measles. Mr Gration has sold about 2000 One Shot One Life Measles badges in the last eight weeks, mainly to other Lions clubs which, in turn, will sell them. “It is my own goal that I set myself to sell 20,000 badges to raise $100,000,” he said. There is also a larger goal,

Home made Open Day By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

THEY’VE been carting their tools around Casey for seven years in need of a patch of grass to build their shed and this week the Casey-Cranbourne Men’s Shed members nailed down their home once and for all. Among 15 other successful Victorian community sheds, the Casey-Cranbourne Men’s Shed will receive a share of $750,000 in State Government grants. Some communities can expect to receive up to $60,000 to build a new Men’s Shed, redevelop an existing building or co-locate a Men’s Shed in a multifunction community facility or hub. Casey-Cranbourne Men’s Shed committee member of seven years Robert Adams said the grant money was “brilliant news”. “It’s been a long time coming,” he said. After finding it difficult to secure a long-term home for their shed, Mr Adams said Blairlogie Disability Services in Cranbourne South has hosted the eight members in a small workshop for the past two years. “We’ve been from garage to garage and started out in our president Dennis Vernon’s home, and Blairlogie have been fantastic and allocated us a parcel of land to build a big shed,” Mr Adams explained. After submitting their grant application with the help of Blairlogie the shed-less Men’s Shed is looking forward to getting their “bums into gear”

Celebrating their new future Noel Shillong, Rob Clark, Steve Dragic, Dennis Vernon, Robert Adams, Norm Williams and John Allan are thrilled with the positive news. Picture: Contributed and doing up the new 18mx9m shed. The current members will fit out the shed with woodworking benches and a place for a barbecue and a beer and Mr Adams said the shed would also be equipped with a disabled toilet and kitchen. “Once we officially get the money we’ll be getting it underway, were hoping to expand the membership base to 40-plus within 12 to 18 months of the shed going up. “We have a lot of interest but because we had the small workshop we haven’t been able to accommodate more men,” he said. The Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos

announced the successful grant recipients on Monday 7 September at the official opening of the Melbourne Men’s Shed at Federation Square. Ms Mikakos said the community sheds play an important role in building inclusive and vibrant Victorian communities. “Men’s Sheds enable people to get together, work on valuable projects and forge strong ties with others in the community - they are great for the health and well-being of men in our communities,” Ms Mikakos said. The Casey-Cranbourne Men’s Shed operates every Tuesday and can be contacted by email on ccmensshed@ gmail.com

Symbol of Aussie pride By CASEY NEILL COURTNEY Gardens Primary has a new Australian flag to fly with pride. Holt MP Anthony Byrne presented the gift to the Cranbourne school on National Flag Day, Thursday 3 September. The day marked the 114th anniversary of the very first time the Australian Flag was flown. Australia’s flag was the first

in the world to be chosen in an open public competition and attracted more than 30,000 entries. Five near-identical designs were chosen and awarded equal first prize. “Today, we honour the ideals for which our national flag stands, including our geography, history, and our unity as a federated nation,” Mr Byrne said.

Holt MP Anthony Byrne presents an Australian flag to Courtenay Gardens Primary School.

“Our flag belongs to the Australian people and has been a central part of our expression of national pride. “It has been our symbol in times of peacetime and prosperity and times of adversity and war.” “As Australians, we can take pride in our unique heritage, our respect for diversity, and the high quality of life that we all enjoy,” Mr Byrne said.

Graffiti vandals are being hunted down By CASEY NEILL POLICE are hunting vandals who targeted a Cranbourne bus stop. They believe about 10 youths struck at the South Gippsland Highway shelter, just north of Camms Road on the north-bound side, about 9.30pm on Saturday 6 June. It’s alleged they used a bat or similar item to smash the bus stop windows and then used a black pen to tag the structure with RSK, GBP, BMS and FLENZER. Police urged anyone who saw something on the night or knows the youths involved to call Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Senior Constable Nick Walters at Cranbourne police station on 5991 0600.

Casey gets a tick By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM

THERE will be no shortage of sunscreen, hats and sunglasses at Casey kindergartens this summer after all council-managed early childhood services received the SunSmart tick of approval. The SunSmart Early Childhood Program encourages healthy levels of ultraviolet exposure among preschool children. All 42 of Casey Council’s kindergarten services and family daycare providers have been accepted into the program, deemed to have taken appropriate measures to keep children safe in the sun. SunSmart Early Childhood Program co-ordinator Justine

Osborne congratulated the City of Casey on prioritising sun protection. “We are delighted to recognise Casey for reaching 100 per cent membership in our program,” she said. “It shows that each of the early childhood services managed by the City of Casey is making a real commitment to skin cancer prevention through policies, education, the use of sun protection and the provision of shady outdoor environments.” City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland recently visited Hampton Park’s Valley Brook Kindergarten to congratulate them on the achievement. He said that it is imperative that service providers remain

vigilant throughout the season. “Council is committed to ensuring all children in our services can always enjoy the great outdoors in a SunSmart way,” he said. “Council worked with SunSmart to develop a weather protection policy, which recognises the importance of sun protection during peak UV times not just when it’s a hot day.” Children and staff at the services providers will wear hats from September to April and are also encouraged to apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing. The facilities will provide shady areas to play and some children will also wear sunglasses for added eye protection.

Disco beat is a heart hit By GEORGIA WESTGARTH SINGING and dancing his way into their hearts, Andy Zammit has turned up the music and made many friends along the way. For a couple of hours every Wednesday morning up to 80 people with disabilities from around Casey get down and boogie with the local dance teacher and disco organiser. “We get people from Wallara, Outlook, Blairlogie and some who come along with their parents or carers and it’s fantastic, it’s something different,” Mr Zammit said. After being approached by disability support service Scope six years ago, Mr Zammit now runs six discos with strobe lighting and loud music throughout the south east. He said he absolutely loves it. “My cousin has had to fill in for me a few times and he reckons it’s the best job in the world. “I get up in the morning with a big smile on my face and rush out the door I can’t wait to get here,” he said. The disco is held at the Factory Rehearsal Centre in Cranbourne and is a place where participants are free to dance, sing and socialise. “They can do whatever they want here,” Mr Zammit said. Playing music from the ’50s through to the ’80s and current hit songs, Mr Zammit DJs the mornings and said he’s seen more than just people’s dance moves being improved by the disco. “I wouldn’t call them miracles but they’re pretty close. “I’ve had some participants that had never spoken before and their first word has been ‘Andy’. “And others who have never danced before are dancing here and at home and I get thankyous from parents,” he said. The open age event costs $6 per disco.

Togetherness for success By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM BUSINESSES providing essential health, education and wellbeing services were recognised for their success in the Casey-Cardinia Business Award nominations on 10 August at Berwick Monash. Kinders Together is a not-for-profit organisation which managing 15 kindergartens in the Cardinia Shire and has earned a reputation for its diligence and care. It was founded in 2006 and has since grown exponentially, now employing more than 60 part-time, full-time and casual early childhood educators within its centres. Earlier this year, Kinders Together opened a new foyer at Pakenham Heights Kindergarten. Money for the new facility was raised through years of dedicated fundraising and planning. Grants and project development coordinator Di Price said the expansion of the kinder made the upgrade a necessity. “Prior to the construction there was no disabled access, we could fit just half a dozen parents with no room for prams, the foyer has more than doubled in size,” she said. “The construction started in September 2014 and finished ready for the 2015 kinder year. “It has been a long-term vision, the initial grant was written three years ago.” Providing a service that could be classed as both education and health, sisters Nikki Jurcutz and Rachael Waia are co-founders of Hero Head Quarters - a business that is transforming the firstaid training industry. Nikki’s background as a paramedic and Rachael’s experience in education

Health, Education and Wellbeing made it a perfect opportunity for the pair, and the accolades haven’t stopped since they became the youngest ever Australian women to own a Registered Training Organisation in 2013. Earlier this year, Nikki was named emerging entrepreneur of the year at the NAB Women’s Agenda Leadership awards and the company was also named New Business of the Year in 2014. Services offered by Hero Head Quarters including corporate first aid training and paediatric training and first aid kits which are designed to meet the needs of young children in medical emergencies. They were awarded the Casey Cardinia New Business of the Year at the 2014 business awards. Similarly, Emerald Medical Centre has achieved a number of previous business awards and developed a reputation for excellence in its field. The centre has been a hills institution since the early 1950s when it was opened by Dr Ian Mcleod Murphy. Today, as well as operating as a general practice, the medical centre houses a pathology service as well as a psychologist, a diabetes nurse and a mental health nurse. It also offers patients convenient opening hours, and is open until 8pm from Monday to Thursday. The winner will be announced at a gala dinner on Thursday 22 October at the Cranbourne Racing Club.

Fiona Sporish, Elisa Chapman, Yasmin Cohan, five-year-old Gabriel, Gembrook MP Brad Battin and Christie Goldus cut the ribbon to the new foyer at Pakenham Heights Kindergarten. 135993 Picture: KIM CARTMELL Left: Dr George Somers and Maryanne Somers accepted the nomination on behalf of Emerald Medical Centre.

BERWICK truckie Craig Membrey was born with transport in his blood. The managing director of Membrey’s Transport and Crane Hire in Dandenong South received recognition for his lifetime behind the wheel on Saturday 29 August. He was among almost 300 people inducted to the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at National Road Transport Hall of Fame 20th anniversary celebrations in Alice Springs. The nod acknowledged Craig’s achievements and lifetime commitment to the transport community. “It was an unbelievable feeling,” he said. “You couldn’t believe how many people were there.” Craig’s father Jack started J and N Membrey and Son in 1962. “My dad was in trucks all his life,” Craig said. “I think I was born with transport in my blood and it just went from there.” He’d help out his dad every weekend. “I left school at 14 years old. It wasn’t meant for me. I went to work for dad,” he said. Craig tried a number of jobs elsewhere after “a few blues with dad”. They’d been talking about working together again when his dad had a stroke. That was 26 years ago and Craig has been running - and expanding - the family business ever since.

A PLACE FOR FAMILY TO CALL HOME IMAGINE kids, followed hot on their heels by the family dog, tumbling through the front door of your spacious, welcoming new home. They shout and laugh and head straight for the kitchen fridge talking over the top of each other as they rush to tell you the narrative of their day. The Hillgrove, by Red Bluff Homes, is perfectly designed for those who cherish family interaction. At the heart of the Hillgrove is a magnificent family living space comprising a central open-plan kitchen with walk-in pantry, a dedicated meals area - where families can sit down and dine together - as well as a huge family area leading to an optional outdoor living space. Bedrooms two and three radiate off the central living zone, as does a family bathroom and separate toilet. The laundry is also conveniently located off this busy central family living zone. The master suite at the front of the home offers a retreat for busy parents looking for some peace and tranquillity at the end of the day. Close the door and revel in the adultonly zone, comprising a spacious bedroom, luxurious ensuite with separate toilet, and a large walk-in wardrobe. Opposite the master suite is an adult sitting room, perfect for a spot of quiet reading or entertaining. Families have different living needs and the Hillgrove can be configured accordingly. Want a fourth bedroom? Then add one. Want a rumpus room and study as well

as three bedrooms? The Red Bluff team can make that happen too. The Hillgrove single storey, is available in a traditional weatherboard facade, a modern brick version or a fusion of both - timber house and brick garage. A version designed specifically for sloping blocks is also available with the garage tucked underneath the house. A verandah shades the front of the house framing two large windows either side of the glass-panelled front door. Step inside and create your perfect family nest. The Hillgrove starts at $209,900 on your land. The base price includes connections, floor coverings, M Class slab, plus your choice of Colorbond roof or outdoor living at no extra charge. To discuss the Hillgrove in detail contact Red Bluff Homes on 9709 0400.

Big hug for Dad By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WAITING to give Dad a big hug at the end of the day came early on Friday for the pre-schoolers at Rangebank in Cranbourne. Dad’s arrived to big smiles for an evening with their children to celebrate Father’s Day. It was all hands on deck as the dads were shown around the school yard. Sausages were sizzled, handprints were set and self-portraits were drawn for Dad. Barbara Ryan-Perkins from the school said her pre-schoolers loved having their dads in class. “The children made ties for each of their dads to wear for the evening and they made clay creations and edible cards,” she said. The sandpit and footy games were busier than usual, and the dads’ evening was capped off with an outdoor hunt and special book for dads.

Putting art thoughts into Casey By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CASEY Council is reviewing its Public Arts Policy and is seeking feedback from the community. As well as being encouraged to attend the council’s Public Art Think Tank on Thursday 10 September, residents are also being urged to complete an online survey and take a quick poll on the subject. The consultation period will close on 1 October, with all those who get involved entering the draw

icy, the council wants to hear from residents and use their feedback to help us plan for the future development of a public art program for Casey. “The council wants to gain a better understanding of what public art means to the community, if they feel it contributes to the overall health and well-being of residents and gauge thoughts on current pieces of public art throughout the municipality.

The council’s Public Art Think Tank will be held on Thursday 10 September, from 6pm to 7.30pm, at the Civic Centre, Magid Drive, Narre Warren. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling the council’s community strengthening department on 9705 5200 by 9 September. AROUND Australia the ATO has opened the doors to its Tax Help centres. Assistant Commissioner Graham Whyte said almost 1000 volunteers from 700 community centres across Australia will be supporting people who need assistance completing their tax returns this year. “We know that for many Australians the thought of doing their own tax return might seem a little bit daunting, that’s why we have Tax Help.” “Tax Help is a free and confidential service provided by ATO-trained and accredited local volunteers. “Tax Help volunteers can help you complete a simple tax return with myTax, claim a refund of franking credits or notify the ATO if you don’t need to lodge a tax return at all. Mr Whyte said people earning less than $50,000 each year and with straightforward tax affairs are eligible to use the Tax Help service. Tax Help is available each year until 31 October. SEVENTY years serving the Tooradin community calls for one big fiery celebration. The Tooradin Rural Fire Brigade under the official Country Fire Authority Act of 1944 will mark 70 years of on-the-job service on Saturday 19 September. Jen Kelly from the brigade said the days of fire-fighting prior to 1944 can’t be verified but thinks the brigade might just be a little bit older than everyone suspects. “It seems there was a local fire-fighting response during the Clyde fires of 1944,” Ms Kelly explained. Now heralding a new era on Evans Street in Tooradin the brigade’s first site was built on Lyall Street at a cost of just 500 pounds. “Considerably different to our more modern base, however the same community commitment and pride is evident in our current volunteers as it was with our brave and committed predecessors,” Ms Kelly said. A party will be held on the day with a jumping castle, activities for the kids, tours of the station and, Ms Kelly advises, “of course any tales - either tall or true”. The celebrations will kick off at 2.30pm at the Tooradin Fire Brigade.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Ideas get set to work By CASEY NEILL “JUST expect your life to be absolutely full of changes.” This was the advice from MC James Sturgess at the annual Lunch with the Winners at Sandown Racecourse in Springvale on 1 September. The SEBN and South East Local Learning and Employment (SELLEN) presented four successful young people to a room filled with Year 9 and 10 students from the Lyndale, Noble Park and Hampton Park secondary colleges, Hillcrest Christian College, Dandenong High School, Chisholm Institute, Emerson School and the Narre Warren and Carwatha College P-12s. The event showcased their different journeys through school and into work to raise awareness of possible career pathways. SEBN manager Sandra George said there were abundant job opportunities in Greater Dandenong. “Don’t let anybody tell you manufacturing is dead and dying,” she said. “It is the backbone of the country. “There are many ways to get where you want to go. “It’s not a straight line. It’s a very zigzag line.” Ms George said communication and problem-solving skills and getting along with co-workers were keys to employment. SELLEN CEO Andrew Simmons said businesses were looking for employees with the right attitude. “They know they can teach the right person,” he said. He said 88 per cent of people with a bachelor degree were employed. “If you have a Certificate III and IV you’re just as likely to be employed,” he said. But employment rates for those who don’t complete Year 12 drop to 66 per cent. “And the better your English, the higher the rate of engagement,” he said. “Our employers really need you to be able to communicate in the workplace.” Mr Simmons warned students that they might need to travel to access a job - that 27 per cent of people who worked in Greater Dandenong lived in Casey and only 20 per cent of Greater Dandenong workers lived in the municipality. Futurist Marcus Barber spoke about potential future careers. “Programming is one of the biggest growth areas in medicine right now,” he said. “You will create the type of jobs that we knew nothing about.” Mr Barber said the world’s biggest problems - access to food, shelter and water for all - were yet to be solved. “But maybe you’ll be the generation that can,” he said.

Satisfied passion for work By CASEY NEILL MATTY Deane gets paid to holiday around the world. It’s a dream job, but he’s walked a hard road to get there. Matty, Alex Woller, Elliott Altmann and Alek Nyok shared their stories with Year 9 and 10 students from the south-east at the annual Lunch with the Winners. Matty wasn’t academic and “never turned up” to school so had few option after VCE. He liked the idea of personal training but friends told him there was no money in the career path. After deciding on teaching - purely for the holidays - he developed a cough. Doctors diagnosed him with cancer at age 24. With eight months of chemotherapy and two months of radiation ahead of him, Matty moved home with his mum. He listened to people complain about their days, didn’t see his friends, could feel himself getting weaker and depression started to set in. “They were filling my head with negativity,” he said. “I hadn’t realised how powerful negativity could be.” A nasty reality check on the scales prompted him to act. He moved out to escape, wrote a bucket list and pur-

Guest speakers Alek Nyok, Alex Woller, Matty Deane and Elliott Altmann. 143749 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS sued personal training. “There’s plenty of money in it if you’re great at it,” he said. His burning passion was to travel the world, so he found a way to make money from it. “I work until I’m tired and I travel until I’m bored,” he said. “That’s my philosophy.” Alex Woller, 20, won last year’s Chisholm Apprentice of the Year and Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Youth Enterprise Award. He said a passion for his job and a strong work ethic were the keys to his success. “I just do what I enjoy,” he said. Elliott Altmann, 23, moved to Melbourne from country Victoria to study

robotics and mechatronics. “I chose robotics because it was a bit of everything,” he said. His uncle and the day’s MC James Sturgess said Elliott wasn’t a model student. “It just shows that you can change your attitude,” James said. Elliott also served as an example of using personal networks to find a job. He was too busy designing and building a race car - which earned him a PACCAR Award for his design efforts - to apply for work. His brother recommended him for a graduate engineer job with a civil construction company. Alek Nyok, 23, came to Australia from North Sudan at age 10 with her

older brother and his wife and two children. “For me it was almost like going into space,” she said. She settled in Ringwood and was the first Sudanese student at her school. “They didn’t know what to do with me,” she said. A move to Castlemaine for her brother’s job sent her back to square one, but she did find a love for fashion and travelled to Melbourne twice a week to develop her sewing skills. Alek returned to Sudan to visit her mum and other family at age 20 and returned with a different perspective about the value of fashion design. She changed paths and is now in her third year of an accounting degree.

A MUCH-NEEDED childcare facility in Clyde North has been officially opened. The $3.4 million Selandra Family and Children’s Centre, formally opened on Thursday 3 September, includes three kindergarten rooms, two maternal and child health service consultation rooms, a community space and meeting room for community use. Casey mayor Mick Morland said the new facility would help ease the current demand for early years services in the expanding Clyde North region. “Clyde North is an area which is experiencing rapid growth and is estimated to have a future population of 18,500 people,” he said. “To support the many families attracted to the area, it is imperative that infrastructure and facilities which support the delivery of education and health services to locals are provided. “The council is committed to ensuring our children have every opportunity to excel in life. “The experiences and learnings of children in the first few years have a significant impact on the rest of their lives and I am thrilled the council is able to provide first class facilities and services for their benefit.”

Casey mayor Mick Morland officially opened the Selandra Family and Children s Centre with help from local children on Thursday 3 September. The centre is designed to be environmentally friendly, with rain water tanks, solar panels and LED lighting. It also incorporates smart technology which automatically monitors temperature, opens windows to regulate airflow, switches off the air-conditioning or heating if doors are left open and turns off all lights when the last person leaves for

the day. Councillor Morland said he expected the facility to become a “true family hub”. “By co-locating kindergarten and maternal and child health services within the centre, families will find it easier to move between services as their children grow up,” Cr Morland said. The centre is at 45 Haflinger Avenue, Clyde North.

EXHIBITORS and patrons it’s time to mark the diary for 7 and 8 November for the second Small Farm + Lifestyle Expo, to be held at the famous Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit. This year will be bigger and better with some exciting new additions and initiatives to attract more site holders and patrons alike. There will be something for everyone at the show with tractors, ride on mowers, ag bikes, garden tools, pumps, generators and so much more. There will also be a strong focus on organic and sustainable living products, with everything from worm farms to solar lights and solar gates being featured. On the lifestyle side, there will be exhibitors covering a

range of leisure pursuits from water sports, pools and camping, to four wheel driving, health and tourism. The reaction to the second expo has been very positive with many local companies and organisations committed and exhibiting the latest farm machinery, implements, power equipment and cutting edge farm technology that will be of great interest to everyone. Most of the main equipment suppliers have already taken sites again because they had a very good response last year with a lot of equipment being sold over the two days and afterwards at their dealerships. Internal and external sites are still available, and exhibitors should contact the circuit for more details.

A dedicated rough terrain area will allow for quad bikes, gators, Ag bikes and 4WDrive vehicles to be put through their paces and a working farm area will showcase the latest farm machinery, tractors, slashers and ride-on mowers. Go here to view a demonstration www. youtube.com/watch?v= The expo will be open from 9am - 4pm each day Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November, and will cost $10 for adults; and is free for children 17 and under accompanied by an adult. Mitch’s moment to shine By JARROD POTTER BECOMING an AFL footballer at the last possible moment this season, former Dandenong Stingray Mitch White pulled on Melbourne’s red and blue jersey for the first time on Sunday. White, 19, from Cranbourne South, earned his ticket into the big league for the Demons’ season finale against Greater Western Sydney. After impressing in the VFL ranks with the Casey Scorpions this season - earning 15 senior appearances and featuring in the best-on-ground five times including a starring performance against Williamstown last month - it was White’s time to make his debut, elevated for the round off the rookie list and thrust straight into the Melbourne starting 18. The defender and midfielder performed admirably across the Etihad Stadium wings as he picked up 16 possessions, six marks and a tackle on debut. White would have impressed many with his tenacious attack

on the ball before he was subbed out of the match in the fourth term. Melbourne Football Club football operations manager Josh Mahoney said White had earned his spot off the back of consistent performances at VFL level. “Mitch has been developing very well at Casey, playing across half-back,” Mahoney said on melbournefc.com.au. “His consistent performances over the past two months have earned him his opportunity to make his AFL debut. “As we saw last week with the debut of Oscar McDonald, players that have performed consistently at VFL level tend to transfer their form into their AFL performances. “Hopefully, playing this game will give Mitch a taste of what is required at AFL level and inspire him to attack pre-season with a hunger for more games, along with his other exciting young team-mates.”

Warriors power to grand final victory THE pain of last season’s Victorian Rugby League grand final beating was put to bed by Casey Warriors in a 30-22 first grade triumph over Werribee. After earning the right to host the grand final at the Casey Fields rugby complex, the Warriors made good use of their home field advantage to claim its first VRL first grade premiership. Things started well for the Warriors, storming out to an 18-6 halftime lead. The Warriors coasted to the early lead on the back of tries to Brandon Manase, Fitu Failegutu and Joe Watene-Lavina but Werribee didn’t lie down though - taking back the lead part way through the second half and forcing the Warriors to dig deep and find a reply. Jesse McQueen snuck into the corner to pinch the lead back - working into free space with the Warriors on a fast-pace overlap against the Bears’ scrambling right-side defence. The Bears pushed back up the ground, but the Warriors held firm to set up the final drive of the match. Casey pushed forward and an impressive cut-back from Watene-Lavina went straight to Michael Butson

surging efforts and thought the clash was much harder than the scores suggest. “I think that the score doesn’t really reflect the game,” Hita said.

“They really put some pressure on us and made us have to grind it out in the second half. “I didn’t think I deserved it actually - I think all the boys in our team deserve it (best on ground trophy),” Hita said. “If they had 13 of these trophies around, I think everyone would deservedly grab one.” Seeing the game advance and grow at the Warriors year-in, year-out, Hita wanted to thank the Casey rugby league community for getting behind the boys on Saturday. “It’s definitely a big achievement, people come to this club at the start of the year and we’ve sort of come back and grouped together and pulled through and to come away with a good trophy at the end is what we all play for,” Hita said. “I just want to thank all the supporters - this is just an awesome feeling coming down here seeing everyone support the cause. “Rugby has come a long way in Melbourne and it really shows with everyone here.” Casey’s women didn’t fare as well in the women’s tackle final, downed 8-10 by Dandenong-based South Eastern Titans. Casey’s Shahana Te Tomo was named player of the match.

WHILE it will not play in Casey Comets jerseys, the south-east has been well-represented in a Southern United consortium bid to join the inaugural Women’s National Premier Leagues (WNPL) Victorian competition. The Comets - in combination with Langwarrin, Mornington, Peninsula Strikers and Seaford Soccer Clubs decided to go in together to create the super-club encompassing the entire south-east and Gippsland. Football Federation Victoria (FFV) announced the successful applicants this week with Southern United featuring in the list of eight clubs that will commence the new competition next year. Casey Comets president Stuart McLeod said the move ensured the south-east’s best players will have a chance to compete in the peak competition while retaining the heritage and history of the Casey Comets at the community level. “We were very happy with the outcome - it’s something that we believe will be the best for soccer in the south-east or southern area,” McLeod said. “We felt that most clubs in our area weren’t in a position to be a standalone club and when I heard the news we were rapt and very excited as a club and a committee. “Joining up under the Southern United brand allows Casey Comets to retain its name as a community club, with the Comets likely to play in a restructured State League 1 competition. Also adding to the strength of the south-east bid is the likelihood that Comets Stadium will host the majority of United matches, based upon the Comets’ WPL history and the current facilities at the Cranbourne-based complex. McLeod encouraged all players in the south-east region - ranging from Mornington Peninsula, Frankston, Casey, Cardinia, Dandenong and Gippsland - to try out for the club, but if it didn’t pan out he hoped they would return to their community club roots to continue strengthening the local game. “What we’re telling our club and telling other clubs is to please come and try for Southern United - if you don’t make it, return to your community club,” McLeod said. Southern United is scouting for talented girls, women, coaches and administrators to get involved from the Mornington Peninsula, Casey, Gippsland and Greater Dandenong areas for the inaugural season, starting in winter next year. For more information on Southern United Women’s Soccer Club, contact Casey Comets club secretary Dawn Stone on dawnstone@caseycomets. com.au or via the United Facebook page www.facebook.com/southernutd.

Scorpions miss the cut By JARROD POTTER VFL - ELIMINATION FINAL REVIEW A FIRST term fadeout cost the Casey Scorpions dearly in its 21-point elimination final loss to Essendon. Post-season hoodoo continued to haunt Casey, which conceded its 11th straight VFL finals loss after it failed to get out of first gear from the opening bounce. With many of the Scorpions’ best this season out of VFL action on Melbourne debut - Max Gawn, Alex Neal-Bullen, Mitch White, James Harmes, Jay Kennedy-Harris, Oscar McDonald, Ben Newton and Viv Michie - the Scorpions had to make do with a makeshift line-up propped up by the Development League side. Also missing from the match was the side’s skipper Evan Panozza - who has been sidelined with a finger injury. Melbourne-listed quartet Aiden Riley (31 possessions), Jordie McKenzie (28), Rohan Bail (28) and Matt Jones (26) were elite through the centre giving the Scorpions’ first touch but the efforts up forward left a lot to be desired as the ball rebounded instantly. After an early point, it was one-way traffic going Essendon’s way. The Bombers booted six unanswered goals to North Port Oval’s Bonnett end. The likes of Kyle Hardingham (three goals) and Jacob Thompson (two goals) led the Scorpions to the ball and had it all their way in the Essendon forward-50 as the lead ballooned to 31 by the break. “Do you want to go down 12 goals down at half-time, 'cause

Picture: JARROD POTTER that’s the way we’re going,” Casey coach Justin Plapp said at the quarter-time huddle. “Do you realise we’re in a finals game ... at the moment our actions aren’t showing that.” Plapp’s stern words took hold in the Casey ranks as the side started to mount a decent comeback. A little bit of aggro kicked things off - with Dean Kent putting a fair bump onto Liam Byrne over the boundary line. From there Casey started to sink its teeth into the Dons’ defensive efforts. Jack Fitzpatrick (two goals) showed a lot on the lead and especially overhead, with Max King and Tim Smith completing the solid Casey forward triumvirate. Their efforts - along with Shannon Byrnes and Jayden Hunt - started to turn the game around as Casey restricted the margin and fought back to within three straight kicks at the last change with the wind at its back. The blustery conditions favoured neither side in a downand-under brawl of a final term. Casey trailed by 15 at the final break and couldn’t break through the Essendon defence. The clash finally broke up ...

but not in Casey’s favour. Essendon booted the solitary goal of the last quarter to claim the 10.11 (71) to 7.8 (50) triumph and eliminate Plapp’s charges. The Scorpions’ development side didn’t have it any better in their elimination semi-final, downed by Coburg 10.8 (68) to 17.9 (111). Jackson McDonald (25 possessions) was Casey’s finest while combine invitee Jordan Moncrieff and Joseph Fisscher booted two goals each.

Who will take ‘Normie’ home this year? By DAVID NAGEL TWO champion ruckmen, a rejuvenated star, and an inspirational skipper on the verge of his greatest triumph, they’re the Gazette’s top picks for Monday night’s Norm Walker Medal count at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. The biggest night on the South East Football Netball League calendar will see Beaconsfield’s reigning back-toback medallist Scott Meyer begin the hunt for an unprecedented third medal on the trot facing some stiff opposition. Doveton’s 2009 winner, ruckman Russell Gabriel, joins midfield maestros, Cranbourne’s Mat Fletcher and Berwick skipper Madi Andrews as the front-runners for SEFNL’s most prestigious individual award. But don’t rule out players the calibre of Narre Warren pair Dylan Quirk and Matt Lee, or Berwick defenders Michael Riseley and Ash Smith, who are sure to poll well in one of the most open counts in years. But just like its more illustrious sibling, the Brownlow Medal, the award hasn’t been kind to defenders throughout its history. Meyer was a dominant winner in 2013, before sharing the award with Pakenham’s elusive left-footer Dom Paynter last year. The high-leaping and athletic ruckman has been a smidgen down on his form of the last two years, but his ability to play as a fourth midfielder once his centre-bounce duties are complete makes him the ultimate eye-catcher. Meyer has been resilient, playing every game for the season and along with his skipper Daniel Mislicki is sure to poll well. Gabriel’s return to the local scene - from VFL club Frankston - has provided a boom for the Doves, who played finals for the first time since 2009, not coincidentally the last time Gabriel wore the black with a green sash. Now almost bald, Gabriel had a fine mop of hair when he first won the medal defeating team-mate Ryan Hendy and Cranbourne’s Ryan Jones by a single vote, with Narre Warren champion Michael Collins and Berwick’s Andrew Tuck two votes away in third. Gabriel has absolutely dominated the stoppages this year, pounding the ball forward with ruthless efficiency, and if it wasn’t for missing four games out of five during the middle of the season he would be redhot favourite to win his second gong. Down at Cranbourne, aside from the recruitment of coach Simon Goosey, it’s been Fletcher’s return from a serious leginjury - that saw him miss 15 rounds last year - that has been the catalyst for the Eagles return to the top of the table. Fletcher is a gifted and dangerous midfielder cum forward, sitting second only to Marc Holt on the Eagles’ list of goal-kickers of the last decade. He has kicked in excess of 220 goals in his career, but it’s been his ability to find it, get it, and extract it from stoppages that has been his main strength this year.

Madi Andrews (Berwick)

Will one of these five stars have 'Normie' hanging around his neck on Monday night or will an outsider walk away with the Norm Walker Medal as SEFNL’s best and fairest player for 2015? Fletcher’s biggest concern could be his team-mates, with Max Gearon, Luke Bee-Hugo, Jones, and forwards Michael Theodoridis and Marc Holt sure to steal some of his thunder. Fletcher’s popularity as a winner would only be matched if Andrews could finally convert his run of placing’s into a first medal around his neck. Unlike Fletcher, Andrews won’t hurt you going forward, having kicked just 22 goals over the last four years, but his grit and determination at the stoppages, and his unselfish workrate, that sees him quite often get back to help out his defenders, has him constantly under the spotlight. Andrews and Paynter were in a two-horse war last year before Meyer made late ground to share the prize. Andrews polled 20 votes, which could be a winning total this year, and the Wickers have won more games. He also finished second to Meyer in 2013. Watch out for Quirk, who finished fourth on 16 votes last year, to once again poll well, while Lee, and Doveton playing-coach Shannon Henwood may be others to keep an eye on after consistent years.

Eagles power on By DAVID NAGEL CRANBOURNE is through to its fifth consecutive grand final appearance after a blistering start led to a 34-point victory over Berwick in the South East Football Netball League second semi-final at Pakenham. The 2011 champions are now odds-on favourites to bury the ghosts of the last three years after producing their best first-quarter performance of the season. The Eagles' 8.1 to 1.6 opening burst was followed by a 4.2 to 1.5 second term which opened up a 52-point buffer at the main break. It was effectively game over, Berwick closing the gap on the scoreboard in the second half - but with a mountain to climb if it’s to get over the Eagles in the big dance on Saturday 19 September. The Wickers first have to get over perennial powerhouse Narre Warren in this Saturday’s preliminary final at Beaconsfield. Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey was a relieved and proud man after the game. “We’ve probably been slow starters this year, and then worked our way into games in second halves, but I think the effort the boys put into the first half showed how much they wanted to win today,” Goosey said. “They really dug deep and you could see they wanted to play for each other today. It was a win full of character and I was really proud of the way they got the job done in the end.” Cranbourne full-forward Marc Holt enhanced his big-game reputation, kicking seven goals for the Eagles, while midfield guns Mat Fletcher, Max Gearon and Luke Bee-Hugo took their own footy to Toomuc Reserve. Mitch Johnson kicked four for the Wickers, who will take some confidence away after kicking nine goals to five in the second half as Cranbourne began to cramp. Skipper Madi Andrews, wayward forwards Ben Kearns and Brody Connelly and defender Michael Johnson were the pick of the crop for the navy blues. Narre Warren will be confident of turning around its 0-3 record against the Wickers this weekend after kicking 18 goals to five after

The Eagles flew out of the blocks, kicking four of the first five goals, but the Magpies kicked seven goals to two in the second term and were never headed.

Kerem Baskaya was absolutely unstoppable for the Magpies, kicking nine goals - including six in the second half - while Corie Intveen, Matt Lee, Dylan Quirk and George Angelopoulos chimed in with two. Angelopoulos took some of the shine off the victory, going down

with an ACL injury late in the last quarter. Beacy’s title reign is over, but Cleyton Bertoncello, Jordan Stewart, Shaun Pollard and Damien Szwaja can rest up in the knowledge that they gave their all until the final siren.

Magpies fire up as Lions fade By DAVID NAGEL NARRE Warren’s first ever A Grade pennant is now within touching distance after the Magpies trounced Pakenham by 28 goals in Saturday’s second semi-final at Toomuc Reserve. The Magpies were made to work hard early, leading by just three and five goals at the first two breaks, but an incredible 31-8 onslaught in the second half showed the hunger is there to go all the way. But Narre coach Greg Heinrich would not be drawn into the hype after the 54-26 win. “A lot of people have mentioned how great it would be for the club to win its first premiership, but we have to keep that under wraps because there’s still a lot of work to be

done,” said Greg, who coaches the Magpies jointly beside his wife Jade. Elly Stewart (GS) was a dominant force under the ring for the Magpies, capitalising on the great play and deft touch of Jade Heinrich (C) and Leigh Taylor (WA) - and Demi Brettoner (WA) in the final quarter - to score 36 of her sides’ winning score. Tayla Shannon (GA) was a more than able back-up, shooting 18 goals including 10 in the final quarter. The Magpies just seem to have all the bases covered at the moment, with Tracey Dell (GK) and Kara Hargrave (GD) impenetrable at the defensive end, while Erin Clark (WD) is the most important and fluid link between a defence and midcourt in the league. Pakenham will be disap-

pointed with its second-half fadeout, but earned the double-chance and will now have to use it against Hampton Park in this week’s preliminary final. Lions’ coach Kerry Twyford didn’t die wondering on the weekend, shuffling Meaghan Cook, Meaghan Winter and Taylor Beck through the midcourt, while Rachel Priestley (GS) was impressive in the first half after being rested last week. The Lions will have to regroup quickly because the Redbacks were super-impressive in their high-quality, 6555, victory over Doveton in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick. The Redbacks blew the Doves away in the first quarter, Emma Ryde fantastic shooting 18 of her team’s

goals in a 19-9 opening term. The Doves were more than competitive from that point forward ... but the damage had been done. Ryde was magnificent for the winners, ending the day with 54 goals, while Sara Drain (C) was back to her dominant best through the midcourt. Madeline Bolson (GD) and Kim Coulson (GK) took on the difficult task of stopping Doves’ show-stopper Rahni Samason (GS) with aplomb, although Rahni did finish with 39 of her sides’ 55 goals. Natalie Montanari (GK), who had her hands full with Ryde, was impressive for the Doves, who had Aggie Seeto, Aila Pera and Kate Sidebottom show some real resolve until the final whistle.

Two of the star mid-courters in the South East Football Netball League, Pakenham’s Meaghan Winter and Narre Warren’s Jade Heinrich, go toe-to-toe at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday. 143949 Picture: ROB CAREW

Sperling leadership CASEY-SOUTH Melbourne has put its leadership faith in up-and-coming all-rounder Lachlan Sperling. Sperling, 22, from Leongatha, will join the elite pantheon of Swans’ history as its Victorian Premier Cricket captain for the upcoming 2015/16 season. With Chris Hall stepping down from Premier Cricket, it opened the door for the Swans to appoint Sperling - who heads into the season as one of the competition’s youngest captains. In his 16 matches last season Sperling hit 327 runs at 21.8 and also tweaked a few spinners taking eight wickets at 45.13. Michael Wallace will be Sperling’s vice captain with the Swans looking to get off the bottom of the VPC ladder when the season starts on 2 October - the Friday before the AFL grand final.

Almost 50 bowlers turned out for the day. Winners from last season’s Club Championships were also awarded their trophies - which included Denise Eastick’s Ladies singles and Ian Bartlett’s Men’s singles titles. Paton said that after last year’s stunning season, all members are looking forward to the big challenge of the higher Metropolitan Pennant Divisions. The Saturday Division 1 team will have a huge ask, but the first

CLINCHING the club’s third title this season in a 1-0 nailbiter, Berwick City earned the State League 2 South East men’s championship and will make the move to State League 1 next season. Making its 40th year one of its best, Berwick City smashed past Old Scotch in a 1-0 victory at home on Saturday to add to the success of both women’s sides this year. Jack Thomas Reserve was a sea of celebration on the weekend after the men put behind them the capitulation of 2014’s narrow miss on promotion to emphatically finish 2015 on a high. Livewire forward and club mainstay Orlando Mejias was sensational at the front, slotting the match winner and helping Berwick City seal the deal on its promotion/league double. “As a whole the team did pretty well - it’s the accumulation of the last four years - the good work done - we had a lot of young players at the beginning and obviously young players need time,” Berwick City coach Carlos Retre said. “Good things need time. “This year we have signed a few players and signed the right ones; they came in and did the job for us.” Retre praised Mejias, who returned to the club from Frankston Pines in the mid-season transfer. “The years that I’ve been coaching at club level he’s been the player that’s been able to perform at a good level every year - he’s been one of our best every year since I’ve been at the club,” Retre said. “He left us early in the year and got him back around half way through the year and he’s been fantastic and scored 10 goals. With promotion in the bank and the league title in its grasp, Retre thought it closed the door on last season’s disappointment. “Overall it was a great season - I thought our side was clearly the best team, so I think our boys deserve it and after last year - where we choked,” Retre said. “Top of the ladder four or five games to go and we choked last year and it just shows with young players they need to learn how to win championships and you could see the improvement. “As the season went on, the last five or six, we won games not by 1-0, but we produced really good performances winning by four goal margins. “We go up but were confident we can do well at the next level.” Berwick City has one left challenge scheduled - the State League 2 championship match against North West champion Bunyule City, but with an end of season trip scheduled this week City isn’t sure if the match will be forfeited or rescheduled. Berwick City women have two sides through to the Women’s State finals with the State League 2 South East women set to battle Eltham Redbacks on Sunday morning from 11am at Comets Stadium with the State 4 ladies getting to battle St Albans for the championship. NPL1 EAST AND STATE LEAGUES Dandenong City has crept into third spot in the NPL1 East after an emphatic 2-0 victory over Kingston City on Monday night. Dandenong City’s fleet-footed mids had a field day with Chris Antoniadis putting the visitors ahead 1-0 in firsthalf red time before Ash Cattermole finished the job in the 75th - heading home the match-winner from a corner set-piece. The win catapults City up to third - on account of its plus-16 goal difference - to sneak past Box Hill United and Goulburn Valley Suns. In their last home and away clash of 2015 Dandenong City hosts Nunawading City from 3pm at Frank Holohan Soccer Complex. Casey Comets men have finished mid-table in State League 1 after a 2-4 loss to Malvern City left the Cranbourne charges in ninth. Liam Ryan finished the season with a well-earned brace. Doveton SC was knocked off 2-3 by Sandringham in its last match of the season. Waratah Reserve played host to the Doves’ finale in 2015 and it didn’t produce much in the way of celebrations. Endeavour Hills Fire secured promotion out of State League 4 South after a 4-0 win over regional rivals Dandenong South.
