■ Need for speed set to get hoons off the streets…
Race revved up By CASEY NEILL
1170560-ACM06-15
DRIVERS will hit the streets this month in a bid to bring back Easternats to curb hooning in and around Keysborough. Jon Davison established the off-street racing event in 1997 to “get kids off the street” and planned to question Greater Dandenong councillors at their 14 September meeting about bringing it back. Following three years of illegal ‘drag racing’ on the Dandenong Bypass each weekend, Keysborough South Action Group this month suggested running an off-street racing program at Sandown Racecourse similar to one at Calder Park. But Melbourne Racing Club spokesman Jake Norton said the venue didn’t have a permit to host such events and that nearby homes and Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regulations would prevent one being issued. Mr Davison said the council in 2009 claimed he hadn’t abided by his event permit. “So (Sandown owner) Melbourne Racing Club terminated the agreement,” he said. “I warned them they’d have a lot of trouble on the streets. “The drivers have got to have somewhere to go to have an ‘automotive expression session’.” Mr Davison said up to 18,000 people took part each year, that council logs showed only two or three resident complaints per event, and that he had met EPA conditions. “We complied with everything that was asked,” he said. “I brought a lot of trade and commerce into the area.” Paul, who didn’t want his surname published, is organising a “peaceful gathering” in the coming weeks as a show of support for the event. “It gives everybody somewhere to go and enjoy themselves in a safe environment,” he said. Dandenong mechanic David Robinson said it brought in plenty of trade for his and other local businesses. “It definitely energised small business for sure,” he said.

Picture: ROB CAREW He said the demand for legal, off-street drag racing was “massive” and that Calder events were at capacity. Resident David, who didn’t want his surname published, said he’d seen up to 10 cars “all bunched up doing group drag races going east bound along the bypass”. He said a speed camera would discourage the hoons. “Police should run regular spot vehicle checks
of our hoon speedsters’ vehicles,” he said. “From the sounds of their machines, a lot would not pass basic roadworthy inspections or meet standard vehicle certifications. “The only way to bring these hoon drivers into line is to hit them hard and regularly.” Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Smart said police had “quite a few things planned” to combat hooning. “It’s at the forefront of our minds,” he said.
Cardinia Highway Patrol members impounded a Subaru WRX for 30 days after detecting its 25-year-old driver travelling at double the 80km/h speed limit on the Dandenong Bypass in Keysborough about 11.50pm on Friday 4 September. The following day the same police impounded a Holden HSV after watching its 23-year-old driver perform a burnout on Princes Highway in Noble Park.

Magistrate hits out at detox ‘travesty’ By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAGISTRATE has slammed a shortage of drug rehab services after an in-wait intellectually disabled ice addict held a steak knife to his girlfriend’s throat. The man, who cannot be named because of an intervention order, was bailed on a deferred sentence by a court on Monday 7 September over charges including threatening to kill his ex-partner in his Dandenong South bungalow. During an argument on 30 August, the man allegedly told the victim several times he would kick her out, adding he hoped she’d get raped. Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Tracey Arnold told Dande-
nong Magistrates’ Court the man said: “If you go to the cops I’ll kill you” as he touched the knife to her throat. The victim indicated she didn’t care and pushed his arms in an attempt to make him cut her. He then allegedly dropped the knife, kicked her and called her a “dumb c...”. She later told police that the man got aggressive and violent to her when he used ice, Ldg Sen Const Arnold said. A defence lawyer said drugs were the “undoing” of the man, who is assisted by Youth Justice and Disability Youth Services. The accused had found his eight days in remand custody unpleasant and difficult, the lawyer said.
“He has been on a waiting list for detox for a month and there has still been no place become available.” The routine 12-week wait was being fast-tracked, the court was told. “He’s next in line to take up that place,” the lawyer said. Magistrate Pauline Spencer described the man’s wait for detox an “absolute travesty” especially given his disability. “This lack of service availability is a real problem for someone vulnerable in (the accused’s) situation. “The alternative to keep (him) and other people safe is imprisonment which costs a lot more.” Ms Spencer said jails were swelling because of a lack of funding for
people wanting detox. “This is the real example of why more funding has to go into these services.” She deferred the man’s sentence, extending his bail on condition he attends residential rehab when it became available. She said if not for the accused’s “personal circumstances” he would be facing jail. “You’re somebody with complex needs. The major complicating factor for your intellectual disability is your use of ice.” She granted bail taking into account the victim had moved to Western Australia, was protected by a full intervention order as well as there being no other recent family violence offending by him.

A 19-YEAR-OLD woman has been handcuffed in her Keysborough backyard while fake policemen entered her house but didn’t steal anything in a bizarre confrontation. The woman arrived at her Ashleigh Street home about 8.45pm on Saturday 5 September where she found three unknown men standing in her backyard. One of the men said he was a cop from the Dandenong police station and asked the victim to place her hands behind her back before handcuffing her. Another man then took her house keys and two of the offenders went through the house while the third stayed to guard the woman. The two men later came out of the house and took off the woman’s handcuffs before all three fled in a white transit van with no windows. There is no description of the offenders apart from them allegedly being aged between 25 and 30. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Woman woken by intruder AN 18-YEAR-OLD girl was shocked when she woke up to find an intruder inside her Keysborough home earlier this month. The unknown man broke into the Daylily Drive house about 10am on Thursday 3 September but was disturbed by the woman when she woke up after hearing a noise coming from upstairs. The woman was soon confronted by the intruder, who fled the house with a bag full of jewellery. A 44-year-old man was also home at the time of the burglary. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

THE teaching went both ways at Yarraman Oaks Primary School on Tuesday, with the students enlightening their principal for the day Councillor Roz Blades on all things school related. With their regular principal away, the City of Greater Dandenong’s Ms Blades took on the top job for one day to educate the primary school students on her other job as a councillor. “I do this every year and have visited many schools - it’s a great way to teach them about what I do, what the City of Greater Dandenong has to offer them and how the council deals with the state and federal governments,” Ms Blades said. After getting her hair done, colouring in, listening to the school’s choir and reading on beanbags in the new school building, Ms Blades was given a task of her own from the students. “They are making their own joke book and are trying to collect 1000 jokes, so I am emailing them back some,” she said. After much discussion, Ms Blades was asked for a special favour from some eager students. “The students have their own vegie patch and chooks at school and would like to learn more about recycling so I was asked to organise someone to speak to them about the best ways to go about recycling,” Ms Blades explained. A positive experience for everyone, Ms Blades hopes the visit will help connect the children’s families with the council. “It’s fantastic to mix with the school community and hopefully families will feel more comfortable contacting the council as well,” she said.

Clare O’Neil calls for more long-term thinking in politics. 143497
Picture: GARY SISSONS
Future fit for our children By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS IF PEOPLE are concerned about the future, why isn’t there a federal Minister for Children? It’s one of the ideas posed by Hotham MP Clare O’Neil in her book Two Futures, which is co-authored with Gellibrand federal MP Tim Watts. Children are one of the few groups that don’t have a voice in the Federal Parliament, she said. Yet their destinies are shaped by politicians’ decisions especially on quality earlyeducation and child care, Ms O’Neil said. She said US research has found that at age four, children of advantaged backgrounds have heard 30 million more words than those from disadvantaged backgrounds. “Once a child starts school from a disadvantaged background they tend to fall further behind,” Ms O’Neil said. She points to Australia’s “extraordinary” bottom-ranking in the OECD for three-yearolds’ early education. Primary-school children’s
academic performance is steady, but going backwards compared to nations such as China. The top seven countries at maths are Asian, while Australia ranks in the high-teens. Ms O’Neil said there needs to be policies for good parenting and early influences on children to reverse the trend. “We need maternal and child health services helping parents be great parents.” Her book says that what Australia will be like circa 2040 will be decided now. She said that the book is not meant to be a party-political polemic but a conversation about long-term thinking. During a self-funded Australian book tour, Ms O’Neil has discovered a thirst in the community to talk about things affecting children. The early childhood issue could shape Australia’s economy in 25 years’ time – whether it’s relying on primary products or fully using people’s skills in emerging “green growth” jobs, she argues. One thing that restricts long-
term ideas is MPs’ extraordinary volume of work and pace of life – something that many constituents don’t understand. Ms O’Neil and four staff represent an electorate of 140,000 including Noble Park, Springvale and Keysborough. Her email box fills with about 1000 messages a week and the office phone rings off the hook, often with complex issues. There’s also the “media stuff” such as writing to newspapers. “It’s getting harder and harder to think about long-term issues. You can get trapped in to not thinking just beyond next week but over the next halfhour.” The other inhibitor is the increasingly partisan nature of politics. Ms O’Neil, a former City of Dandenong mayor, said local government tended to focus less on party politics. “As mayor I was concentrating on having a functional council which would make good decisions based on consensus.”

THE stories behind Dandenong’s laneway names are now on display for their visitors to see. Greater Dandenong Council launched interpretive signage in Ewart, Garnar, Crump and Boyd lanes on Saturday 29 August. Garnar was a local funeral director, Crump was a general store on Lonsdale Street and Boyd was a fast-growing and successful hardware store. Ewart was a former newsagency run by brothers Norman and Charlie Ewart. John Ewart is their nephew, attended the launch and said there were four brothers in total. “Alan had the menswear store not far from there,” he said. “My father was Frank and he was the youngest of the four brothers. Frank was a banker.” He said the Ewarts were born in Brighton. “Norman and Charlie went up to Dandenong in the 1920s,” he said. “It was the only newsagency in Dandenong for many, many years.” John lived in the country as a child but often visited the store. “I was fond of my uncles,” he said. “One day during the war years I convinced Charlie to let me have the leather bag and some papers to sell papers down at the railway station. “It would have been during the 1940s and the Americans had a base there. “I was only seven or eight but I remember selling papers to the American soldiers as they were jumping on the train.” Norman was the eldest and died in 1954.

I’m for little bit of India Matthew Guy says Dandenong's Little India should be supported. 144107 ask the State Government for a moratorium on new liquor outlets in affected areas. Mr Guy said there was no better advice on community safety than that given by police. However, he backed away from overhauling the liquor licencing regime, which had been labelled by Mr Cornelius as “ridiculously permissive”. When asked how extremism among children and young adults could be curbed, Mr Guy said parents had the best opportunity to talk to their kids when they noticed behavioural change. “If you notice attitude changes in your kids ... the government can’t notice those changes, the communities can’t notice those changes, churches,

OPPOSITION leader Matthew Guy has slammed the State Government for looking outside of Little India in Dandenong to establish the state’s premier Indian precinct. In an interview with Star News, Mr Guy said the move was akin to creating another Lygon Street precinct outside of Lygon Street, or starting up a second Greek precinct. “I know they talk about Tarneit (as an option). Respectfully I’d say let’s make this one work.” He said Little India was a “very good concept” that had been recently improved with new signage and branding. The precinct could be further lifted with bi-lingual signage, streetscaping and rebranding. Mr Guy said a streamlined planning regime was needed to attract private investors to join the Revitalising Central Dandenong urban renewal project - which had been kickstarted with $290 million of state funding. Mr Guy also responded to Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius’s concerns - aired by Star News - about the harm created by packaged liquor and its proliferation in disadvantaged areas in the south-east. He said the best thing would be for south-east councils to
mosques or synagogues or temples can’t notice those changes. “Parents are the first port of call to noticing behavioural changes amongst children, kids.” Twelve months have passed since 18-year-old Numan Haider’s fateful attack on police in Endeavour Hills, and even less since Federal police executed raids throughout Casey in response to an alleged plot to target police at a local Anzac Day service. The aspiring premier said it was unfair to also single out community groups such as the Islamic community. “They do a lot, a lot, a lot more than people realise, to help and assist to ensure their community is not unfairly branded or maligned and that anyone within in their community who removes themselves, that they try and come around, to try and help,” Mr Guy said. “And so do a number of Christian communities, it’s not an issue that’s just relevant to Islamic communities. Mr Guy did not commit to ending rate-capping on councils, if it was introduced. He said he was, however, concerned about its impact on community services if councils were also hit by cost-shifting. Mr Guy said he would scrap the AFL Grand Final weekend public holiday, predicting it could become an election issue.

It is my privilege to serve your community OVER the past year, I have been spending a lot of time out and about at community events and festivals across the Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia regions. Events I have attended include Ramadan, mosque openings and NAIDOC week celebrations. I am constantly amazed at the generosity that is offered and the manner in which everyone, irrespective of who they are or where they come from, is welcomed. This often makes me reflect on what a great community I have the privilege to work amidst. For me, this openness and generosity comes from the fact that our community is so unbelievably diverse. This diversity brings a richness and energy

that I have never experienced before in many years of community policing. I think one of the most important parts is that, more often than not, we all get along incredibly well. This harmony is a credit to you all as it demonstrates to me that tolerance and respect are fun-
damental principles we’re all happy to live by. I’m not saying we’re perfect. From time to time, I see reports of crimes and incidents that are motivated by prejudice, discrimination and racism. These crimes can take many forms and while some involve physical assault or damage to property, others involve verbal or written abuse. In whatever form, these crimes are very serious and should be reported to police. This behaviour does not belong in our community. Irrespective of the faith people practise or the clothes or attire they choose to wear, everyone has the right to feel safe, secure and respected in our community. I am aware that some members of our commu-
nity may feel afraid to report this type of crime. I say to you that Victoria Police takes these reports very seriously. We will make every effort to investigate them and hold those responsible accountable. No-one should be afraid to report a crime. If you require emergency assistance, dial triple zero (000) immediately. If you are a victim, please contact your local police station, call Crime Stoppers confidentially on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at crimestoppersvic. com.au It is a duty, both as a community and as individuals, to do all we can to prevent and deter crime. I believe we can do it.
A committee of ladies had elaborate preparations made to entertain the soldiers at afternoon tea, which was greatly appreciated by the men and after being treated to cigars and cigarettes they gave three ringing cheers for the people of Dandenong.
20 years ago 18 September 1995 Ticket machine ‘danger’ Plans to automate ticketing on public transport by 1997 sparked outrage from the Public Transport Users Association last week. Dandenong, earmarked as a “premium” railway station, will be the only one in the region to remain staffed. The association assistant secretary, John McPherson called the decision “dangerous”.
LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 9 September 1915 Wounded Soldiers Visit Dandenong It is many a long day since Lonsdale Street presented such a lively and picturesque appearance as that on Saturday when the residents of Dandenong turned out en masse to extend a right royal welcome for the returned wounded soldiers from the distant Dardanelles. The assembled multitude of men, women and children in front of the town hall, all animated with a spirit of admiration for the heroes of fatal Gallipoli, was exhilarating in the highest degree and the enthusiastic cheering and waving of flags by the pupils of the Sate School, marshalled by the head teacher Mr Talbort. What with gay bunting and the flags of the Allies fluttering in a brisk breeze from the south, together with the various spring costumes of the ladies, punctuated here and there with brilliant scarlet feathers and bright dyed ribbons in their head gear, all combined to create a vision of colours which, in a spectacular sense, was most pleasing to the eye, and left nothing to be desired from an artistic
point of view. Many young ladies present were armed with bunches of posies and bouquets of sweet scented flowers, which, with genuine heart thrills, they threw to the soldiers as they passed by in the motors. About 11am a number of wounded soldiers passed through Dandenong to Berwick where they were heartily entertained. On their return to Dandenong they joined their comrades who were awaiting them at the north end of Lonsdale St. From this point between 30 and 40 motor cars made their way to the town hall. One could not help being deeply impressed with the grave faces and faraway look in the eyes of many as car after car glided into the avenue of two rows of spectators. The expression was not that of apathy or indifference to the enthusiasm evoked by their arrival, it was rather that of men who had gone through an awful ordeal. The Shire President (Cr Pearson) welcomed them to Dandenong and showered encomiums on them for their gallant deeds at Gallipoli. The Dandenong Brass Band then played the National Anthem after which the children sang ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’.
50 years ago 15 September 1965 Safely landed… by a crane A mobile crane was used to lower an injured man from 30ft high scaffolding at Clayton on Tuesday morning. The man, Donald Roy Abbey of Wiltshire Rd, Bayswater, had a lucky escape from death when he overbalanced and fell from a small scaffold while painting the roof of a new Volkswagen building at Clayton. His fall was broken by a girder and he landed on a larger scaffolding more than 30ft. from the ground where he lay in pain from back injuries until Peninsula Ambulance officers arrived. A special rescue stretcher was rigged and preparations made to lower the injured man with ladders and ropes when a rigging crew arrived and offered the use of a mobile crane.

DANDENONG Library staff will have more time to help patrons thanks to a new addition to the team. Library-users return books, magazines, DVDs and CDs through a slot in the library entrance. An automatic book sorter will now use radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to organise the items into dedicated return bins using conveyer belts, removing the need for manual sorting. Borrowers returned about 400,000 items to the Dandenong Library in the past financial year. GREATER Dandenong needs to lead the way in addressing the Syrian refugee crisis, says Councillor Roz Blades. She urged anyone with spare rooms or bungalows to open their doors to those in need, and those with other ideas on how to help to come forward. “We’re a refugee city. We’re a world in a city,” she said. Cr Blades said the image of Syrian toddler Alan Kurdi lying dead on a Turkish beach had brought her to tears. “We have to be the start of a movement that’s going to do something so that this doesn’t happen to other children,” she said. NOBLE Park Community Centre’s Art Show has received high praise from the shadow arts minister. Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus in Parliament encouraged people to attend the 10 to 11 October event. “I am privileged to visit many art shows

around the country and, call me biased, but there’s no event that I enjoy quite like the Noble Park Community Centre Art Show,” he said. NICE try at humour by an unregistered driver in court last Monday. After hearing the evidence, the magistrate asked rhetorically: “A $400 fine?” The accused responded: “I’ll take two (hundred)”. The magistrate reiterated - in a distinctly icy tone - it would be $400. IN his meeting with Star News journalists, state opposition leader Matthew Guy revealed himself as a bit of a petrol-head. Mr Guy derided Premier Daniel Andrews for posing for photos like a “B-grade celebrity“ at the V8 Supercars’ Sandown 500 on the day that “pretty terrible“ jobs stats were released. A self-confessed V8 driver, Mr Guy admitted as an aside that he may have been a little jealous not to have been there. SOME Australians declared their homes open to take in some of the 12,000 Syrian refugees invited to these shores last week. Mr Guy described the gesture as showing “the best of any community“. “What a wonderful thing for people to do.“ He was asked by Star News if he’d open his home’s doors to a Syrian family. Mr Guy said that family would have to put up with his three kids - all of which wake up on the dot of 5.55am. Gill Williams: Interested in knowing the long-term plan to integrate them into society - teaching English to both parents and kids, getting kids into schools, getting parents into work, helping them to sustain themselves in the long-term. I’m happy to help, qualified TAE, not looking for paid work. In fact, what are we doing for those already here?!

Hard line to end violence By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE top cop for Melbourne’s south-east makes no apologies for a hard-line stance on family violence. Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said police made a determined push 18 months ago to treat a family violence offender like “any other serious criminal”. A pro-arrest and pro-remand policy was then brought in. No longer would offenders “lounge around” in an interview room but they’d be kept in a police cell while police decided on the next step. Such treatment took away the perpetrators “misplaced notions” such as having “dominion and control over their victim”. Mr Cornelius points out why police take every intervention order breach seriously, whether it is harassment by phone and social media or contact violations. Looking back on cases where a partner or child is killed, often there has been a build-up of intervention order breaches against the victim. “What underpins that breach is a mental attitude by the perpetrator that he is not going to be held accountable. “You might see breaches before an act of violence occurs. It’s part of a pattern or a buildup that has to be stopped.”
In Casey, 46 per cent of assaults are family-violence related - the highest rate in the state. The region’s hardline approach has led to significantly reduced re-offending by family violence offenders. In recent years, there had been annual rises of 60 per cent in recidivism. Last year, there was a 6.3 per cent drop in the southern metro police area - the only division in the state to record a reduction. There’s a list of 320 offenders at high and extreme risk of recommitting family violence in the south-east. Without this harder line policy, the list would be over 700, Mr Cornelius said. The second step was in partnership with Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to fast-track offenders through the judicial system. Offenders front a magistrate within a week. Prior to fast tracking, it took about 16 weeks – a delay that undermined the significance of the offence and further exposes the victim to risk, Mr Cornelius said. At the same time, victims have been more responsive. In November, 16 family violence matters were withdrawn by the affected family member before their first court hearing. Since the pilot started in De-
cember, only four matters were withdrawn over four months. Before the pilot, about 63 per cent of matters were withdrawn. The rate is now 10 per cent. Mr Cornelius said there was strong anecdotal evidence that offenders were being held to one offence and recidivists were stopping their offending. “They’re acting like children and they need a grown-up to step them through to help them change their thinking. “These individuals clearly need to understand what they’re doing is wrong.” The next steps included to ensure offenders directed to men’s behaviour change programs didn’t get credits from the courts for just “sitting up the back”. He said he was “all for” more investment in the behavioural programs – reportedly running at 11-month waiting lists in the south-east. Mr Cornelius also called for courts to impose more supervisory orders on offenders. One of the chief problems was to direct more community services’ funding towards early intervention rather than crisis response. As police well know, the crisis usually comes after a long build-up of early warning indicators.

A MAN allegedly travelling as a passenger in a stolen car containing a sawn-off firearm, cartridges and drugs that stopped at a Waterways car wash has been refuesd bail. It was the second failed bail application for Daniel Mayers of Noble Park since his arrest on 28 August. He told a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing on Monday 7 September that he didn’t know the driver of the $100,000 Holden that was reported as stolen from a car yard in Cheltenham on 24 July. He also asserted that his keys and wallet may have fallen from his lap into one of two bags seized from the front passenger footwell. Among the items seized from the backpack were an ex-
tendable baton, digital scales and deal bags. “The bag wasn’t mine,” he told the court. The other bag contained three sets of keys and tools such as broken scissors, a shifter, a torch, cutters and a lock pick. Elsewhere in the car was found an unregistered sawnoff air rifle and 100 rounds of 0.177-calibre Windchester cartridges, yet to be fingerprinted and tested for trace DNA. Detective Leading Senior Constable Paul Keen of Kingston CIU told the court that Mayers allegedly had a black bum bag containing three deal bags with a total 4.5 grams of ice. Ldg Sen Const Keen said Mayers made full admissions to being a passenger in the car for two hours and to possessing ice. He allegedly told police he
was unaware of the other seized items and that the car had been stolen. The informant told the court that Mayers had an “extensive history” of firearms, violence and dishonesty offences that was “strikingly similar to his current offending”. He had been on bail at the time over similar charges laid in March and July involving possession of an imitation hand gun, flick-knives and a Taser, as well as ice. Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted that a community corrections order had not been able to “hold” Mayers over the past several months. “The risks (of reoffending) are way too high,” she said. Mayers was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 October.
Appeal to find stolen jewellery POLICE have released photos of a number of jewellery items stolen from a Dandenong home early last month, including a $39,800 engagement ring and a Rolex watch. Thieves broke into the Nova Drive property between 11am and 4.15pm on 4 August and stole the three-carat engagement ring, the Rolex watch, a gold ring, a bracelet, another set of rings and some designer handbags. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Detective Senior Constable Bianca Aitken on 9767 7534.
Police are appealing for information about these distinctive pieces of jewellery.

A message from the Manager at Saffron Grove
Jan Hugget Manager
At Saffron Grove your well being is our top priority. We believe that many people move into a retirement village to ensure a feeling of safety, together with the desire to have social interaction with others as often as they wish. Another basic reason is to ensure your loved one be surrounded by friends and support if anything should happen. Plus the benefit of having companionship and activities to assist them to remain active, well and happy. I must say that the residents in Saffron Grove are the most settled I have ever had the pleasure of working with….they are a delightful and contented bunch who allow everyone to settle into the village in their own way. They offer assistance and opportunities to join in but are very respectful that everyone needs to do what is right for them. Our Social committee are responsive to residents needs and are happy to incorporate new ideas. So, for example, if you are a painter and wish to start a painting class – so be it…if other residents want to partake, then painting is added to the list of what you can do at Saffron Grove. In other words it is all up to the requirements of the residents. With locked gates at night, a 24 hour emergency call service, beautifully appointed units and your social and companionship needs met - we ask you - what more could you want! Shoot death shockwaves A NEW vigilance has emerged in the Afghan community in the south east since the tragic death of Numan Haider at Endeavour Hills Police Station 12 months ago, an Islamic Council of Victoria spokesman has said. Kuranda Seyit recalls the “shockwavesâ€? sent through the local Afghan community after Haider was fatally shot after attacking two police officers on 23 September 2014. “Once the dust had settled it was a very tragic scenario. It was a scenario that people didn’t expect. “You had a fairly young person who, for various reasons and factors, was led down a violent pathway towards not only the death of himself but the injuries to the two police officers.â€? There was a whirl of ensuing emotions - frustration at the news coverage and the highemotion of coming “face to face with the young man in the coffinâ€? at Haider’s funeral. Many in south east Melbourne knew the family involved and had a connection with Haider, Mr Seyit said. Afterwards some anxiety crept in. Some people have “unanswered questionsâ€? pending a state Coroner’s inquiry into Haider’s shooting. The inquiry has a “lack of

ONE YEAR ON JOURNAL REPORTER CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS CONTINUES HIS SERIES INTO THE AFTER EFFECTS OF THE DEATH OF ISLAMIC EXTREMIST NUMAN HAIDER. transparency due to national security interests, but enough evidence to “put to bed the rumour and hearsay rumbling within the “grassroots, he said. It was widely reported that Mr Haider, influenced by Islamic State propaganda, was fatally shot by police in selfdefence after he stabbed two officers with a bladed weapon in a premeditated attack. Since the incident, the Afghan community has “taken the initiative to talk and dine with state and federal police command, politicians and leaders of security groups. In the aftermath, Star News reported on some of the police’s outreach efforts such as cross-cultural seminars between officers and community leaders. At the end of Ramadan, police – including Superintendent Russell Barrett – helped a Doveton mosque’s members
hand out food to neighbours. Mr Seyit was impressed by a police pledge to do its best to prevent such incidents before they escalated to criminality. However he described the relationship as “tenuous though there was goodwill on both sides. “It’s tenuous in a sense because of the outstanding question marks. “There are people who, on the ground, feel frustrated and anxious while community organisations are trying to build the bridges. “The Muslim community, along with the Afghan community, understand the most important thing in Australia is to maintain peaceful co-existence and a respectful and fair society, Mr Seyit said. “So they’re the first to put their hands up to protect Australia and ensure they live together peacefully. Mr Seyit said there was extra vigilance on keeping tabs of disengaged youth and that the topic of radicalised youth was no longer taboo and that information was flowing more freely in the community. “If there’s anything positive to take away, the community has really looked at itself deeply and reflectively on how we can ensure our youth are helped.

We are 1 principal owner of 6 offices in the franchise network of over 700 offices The Property Management team at our 6 offices are known for being highly organised and highly adaptable. Undertaking stringent tenant selection, the team is responsible and efficient; LJ Hooker team ensures that the portfolio runs as smoothly as possible.
Chris, Roeun and Robert Testimonial The approach at LJ Hooker Glen Waverley is completely different and extremely refreshing. LJ Hooker has handled my properties for a long time and they are by far the best property managers I have ever worked with. They understand the market as well as the needs of both owner and tenant. They found several tenants for my properties and on all occasions I have been extremely happy with the tenants and also the level of service. When there have been maintenance issues, the property manager has found quality, professional tradesmen and no job has required re-work. On one occasion when the tenant caused the maintenance issue, they worked with them to resolve the problem. Having lived interstate for the past 12 months I could completely relax about my properties, knowing LJ Hooker Glen Waverley would look after them. I would not hesitate to recommend the LJ Hooker Property Managers Roeun, Chris and Robert to anyone who is seeking a managing agent. Yours sincerely, Chris and Jennifer Anderson
They understand that property is a major investment; their client needs to feel their property is in safe hands and that it will be managed meticulously.

LJ Hooker Hampton Park Proudly donating to local schools & sporting clubs Staff from LJ Hooker Hampton Park visited a number of local schools recently to give back to the community which has given them so much. The LJ Hooker Hampton Park staff visited Rivergum Primary school, Hampton Park Secondary College & St Kevin’s Primary School to deliver further cheques to each school. Director John Deo said it was their way of giving back. “We decided to donate to schools as we wanted to give back to our community as the community has been good to us over the years and we thought the best way would be to help out the local schools.” he said. “With the money we have said to the schools that we want them to use the money to help the kids and their education, but they can use the money where they see it as it helps the schools as they don’t get enough funding every year. “The whole sales team at LJ Hooker Hampton Park have contributed to this fabulous donation, our goal is to help the schools in anyway we can. “We have so far donated a total of $19,000.00 and hope it helps the schools and kids.” LJ Hooker Hampton Park also donate to and are sponsoring the Hampton Park Football / Netball club and the Narre South Lions junior football club.
To assist us help our local schools & sporting clubs, please contact the team at LJ Hooker Hampton Park for all your real estate needs.

HISTORY WITH POTENTIAL FUTURE HISTORY seeps from every corner of the Old Dalyston Deli and its nearby house, and yet it’s the future that beckons. The property at 74 Glen Forbes Road, Dalyston, features a large 100-year-old house, an old converted church, 2.5 acres of grounds and an extensive vegetable patch. It could make a perfect family home, but there’s a lot more to it for someone looking for a lifestyle business. After 15 years, the vendors are ready to move on, but will be fascinated to see what the future holds for the great property. With a hospitality background, the current owners’ focus had been on opening the place up for others to enjoy good food and drink. As the Old Dalyston Deli, the old church building was a well-known cafe restaurant/ function centre.
Offered for sale through LJ Hooker Wonthaggi, agent Hans Ruben believes the cafe would suit owner/operators or could be leased to provide an income stream. Alternatively, he said lots of customers had seen the church building as perfect for a home conversion, art gallery or retreat centre. The house, the former church Presbytery for the church, is being marketed as having potential as a B&B or guest accommodation. With the maid’s quarters at the back, it could separate into separate living areas. According to the agents, the current owners had considered using the lounge/dining area as a 40-seat restaurant at one stage such is the size. There are also existing plans for a revised kitchen/living area with a large deck overlooking the lawns, which would bring
that inside/outside element into play. On a larger scale, there’s the prospect of building additional accommodation within the grounds, subject to council approval, while the rear of the property lends itself well to subdivision, so the possibilities are endless. The property is 10 minutes from the beach and town centre; there’s a pub at each end of the street and a football club down the road. For more information, contact Hans Rubens at LJ Hooker, Wonthaggi, 0409 796 216.

On display at Berwick Waters estate in Clyde North is the fabulous Clifton display home, from builder Rawdon Hill. The Clifton, part of the Rawdon Hill Smart series range, is a beautiful four-bedroom, two living area family home. This fabulous new design is displayed as a 26.6 square home, it can however be done in a variety of sizes from 22 squares and up. Rawdon Hill also has other homes ranging from 12 squares to 50 squares. The floorplan will suit most demographics from families to investors, whether upsizing or downsizing. Designed with the modern allotment size in mind, the layout makes the most of a block of land ensuring that buyers are able to view the rear yard from the main living areas. Inside by the entry, find a generous main bedroom with separate walk-in wardrobe and ensuite with large shower, toilet roll holders and towel rail. Further down the entry is a modern take on the study, a work station - somewhere to drop the keys, keep the bills, place the printer and modem. Sales manager Nathan Foley likes the idea of getting all those items you
tend to accumulate at the end of your kitchen bench and give them a separate home. The lounge/theatre is the next key feature that is very well sized for that separate living area that current living demands. Past a handy storage linen cupboard and the home opens up into a generous family, meals and kitchen zone. The beautiful kitchen has a large walk-in pantry, stone bench tops, glass canopy rangehood, stainless-steel 900mm free-standing oven, dishwasher and island bench with breakfast bar suitable for the master chef or the everyday cook. The Smart series range by Rawdon hill don’t leave you short from there with other included features being ducted heating, split-system cooling to make it very comfortable to come home too. No need for sheets on the windows as the blinds to windows are
also included. With three other bedrooms, this four-bedroom home is a very well thought out and functional home. Rawdon Hill has also focused on the inclusions, making sure they are what the market is asking for. Included is something you get used to hearing when walking through their display homes. Included floor coverings, included cooling, included LED lighting to keep those electricity bills down. It is what the market is demanding and something that not many builders are doing as a standard inclusion. Inquire now to discover the great value on offer. Seeing is believing, drop in to the display this weekend and chat to Sue 0400 828 894, who will be able to help you out with all your new home needs.

NEW HOMES & LAND
BERWICK WATERS’ BOUNTY OF BLOCKS Berwick Waters, the signature master-planned community by Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia continues its success with the recent auction of five prestigious land lots in The Strand precinct. These sales take the total number of blocks sold at Berwick Waters to more than 400. During the final weekend in July, 15 families, some of whom had been unsuccessful in previous attempts to secure the block of their choice, competed for an opportunity to make their dream come true. The five large sized, water-facing blocks were the last of the blocks featuring water views in this current stage. This prized section of the development, with land lots ranging in size from 476 to 544 square metres, attracted auction bids from $335,000 to $415,000 demonstrating the value placed on securing land in this prestigious estate. Homes at Berwick Waters are set among 52 hectares of magical wetlands which include about four kilometres of water and greenery when fully constructed, complete with nine kilometres of walking and bike trails, fitness stations and picturesque viewing platforms over the wetlands. Berwick Waters makes for inspirational living in an enviable location in the City of Casey. Jill Lim, Development Director at
Frasers Property Australia is proud of the evolution at this landmark estate. “Berwick Waters is a flagship development and, as such, Frasers Property and Mondous Property Australia are especially delighted that the estate still attracts tremendous interest
from families keen to secure a block of land on which to build their dream home. “The Strand is a particularly exciting precinct and brings with it a stunning vista of water views and lush surrounds perfect for bringing up a young family or even for empty nesters looking
for ideal living options that suit their interests and needs,” Ms Lim said. With a vast display village featuring many of Victoria’s top builders, Berwick Waters enables these newest landowners the chance to view the latest offerings in home design and
floorplans so they can start their new home-building adventure almost from day one. Frasers Property Australia’s Executive General Manager, Residential, Anthony Boyd says that upon completion between 2500 and 3000 families will live at Berwick Waters enabling a new community to thrive in this scenic part of Casey. “Berwick Waters is about providing homes, community and future employment opportunities to a broad demographic, encompassing young families, first-home buyers and retirees, all within a stunning natural setting. “Diversity is key to this signature project and over the coming months we will feature a wide range of offers that will be the mainstay of this 270-hectare mixed-use development,” Mr Boyd said. A unique and unified vision for Melbourne’s south east, Berwick Waters remains an opportunity of a lifetime for Melburnians seeking a secure and delightful neighbourhood to call home, in a picturesque setting with a small town feel. Berwick Waters is being developed by Mondous Property Australia and Frasers Property Australia, which was formerly known as Australand. Berwick Waters is located at 5 Riverstone Boulevard, Clyde North. For further information, phone Frasers Property on 133 838.

YOUR VOICE FOR 150 YEARS
DANDENONG JOURNAL
Cemetery at dead centre SPRINGVALE’S CEMETERY HAS BEEN A FOCAL POINT FOR THE REGION FOR MORE THAN 113 YEARS. SOUTHERN METROPOLITAN CEMETERIES TRUST HISTORIAN AND CULTURAL HERITAGE MANAGER DOCTOR CELESTINA SAGAZIO EXPLAINS THE SITE’S HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE. THE Necropolis, Springvale - now Springvale Botanical Cemetery which was opened in 1902, has played an important role in the Springvale and Dandenong district. The Shire of Dandenong, within whose bounds the cemetery lay, was one of the municipalities that strongly advocated that the new metropolitan cemetery should be located in this district. One of the original cemetery trustees was Charles James Jago, who was a highly respected resident of Springvale and a councillor of Dandenong Shire (he was Dandenong Mayor in 1901-’02). Over the years, many thousands of citizens in the district were interred in the cemetery, including well-known identities. The cemetery land was purchased in 1878 - the result of the vision of the radical parliamentarian Francis Longmore - but long-standing municipal jealousies and rivalries prevented the opening of the cemetery for another 24 years. The new cemetery would replace the Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton. By the 1890s, inner-city cemeteries became ever-crowded with burials and there was a sustained push for a new burial ground in the eastern part of Melbourne. Public meetings were convened at Dandenong and other localities to convince local politicians the merits of a Springvale cemetery. Dandenong’s South Bourke and Mornington Journal, the forerunner of the Dandenong Journal, spoke of the beauty of the Springvale site: “The contour of the ground is a gentle un-
dulating slope, which commands a fine view of Port Phillip Bay and the surrounding districts, and is so situated that it will be capable of any amount of ornamentation by landscape gardening and statuary, which can be shown off to great advantage.” Furthermore: “there is abundance of land adjoining should 300 acres not be sufficient ... which could at present be bought for a very reasonable sum”. By 1896 the original promoter of the Springvale cemetery site, Francis Longmore, was conveniently placed as parliamentarian for Dandenong and Berwick and pushed again for the establishment of the cemetery. The Dandenong press was jubilant when the cemetery was given the goahead in 1901. Some famous residents in the district are interred in Springvale Botanical Cemetery. Sir John McEwen, who was Prime Minister for 23 days following the drowning death of Prime Minister Harold Holt in 1967, lived in Dandenong while young and attended local state schools. His simple cremation memorial is placed under a rosebush and modestly makes no reference to his political office. Percival Pavey, champion rifle shooter, joined the Oakleigh Rifle Club as a young man and his outstanding skill soon became evident. He 16 times won the Grand Aggregate - the top prize in the sport - and was the only Australian to achieve this feat. In 1948 he won the prestigious King’s Trophy in England and was presented with his award by King George V.

Clarence Reardon’s funeral procession. The front fence of his home in Oakleigh was made from the barrels of some of the many rifles he had used. His epitaph includes the words “a much respected world famous rifleman”.
Collingwood premiership footballer Darren Millane, who lived in Noble Park, was killed in a car accident on 7 October 1991. Millane’s funeral was held at the Dandenong Town Hall where it is es-
timated more than 5000 people attended, while the large crowd outside heard the service on a loudspeaker. His cemetery monument is emblazoned with Collingwood emblems and his nickname, Pants.

THIS tax time the ATO is increasing its focus on rental property deductions and is encouraging all rental owners to double-check their claims before lodging their tax return. The ATO is paying particular attention to excessive deductions claimed for rental properties, especially those located in popular holiday destinations around Australia. There are a few simple rules rental property owners should follow to avoid making mistakes. Firstly, it is important for all property owners to keep accurate records to help ensure they declare the right amount of rental income and they have evidence for claims made. Secondly, rental property owners should only claim deductions for the periods the property is rented out or is genuinely available for rent. If a property is rented at below market rates, for example to family or friends, deduction claims must be limited to the income earned while rented.

Traffick addict ends in jail By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SPRINGVALE South woman has been jailed for up to 18 months for multiple heroin-trafficking offences, including while on bail in July. Diep Lam, 34, smiled at family members from the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court dock on Monday (7 September) as her lawyer recounted Lam’s drug-dependent teen and adult life. She had been introduced to drugs at
an early age by an older peer group at school, the lawyer said. After a time “on track”, she relapsed into heroin abuse due to a sexual assault at work. The lawyer said Lam left home as a 14 year old due to a “turbulent” relationship with her father and didn’t return until eight years later. During her recent offending, she was using half-a-gram of ice a day. Lam also needed ongoing counsel-
ling for “severe depression”. When Lam breached bail in July, police found her with $1400 cash, a silver knife, 16 grams of heroin and 12.1 grams of ice in her car on Chandler Road, Noble Park. She had been granted bail in June after being found with $4785 cash, 7.5 grams of heroin and 1.28 grams of ice outside a Clayton pokies venue. Lam was on two community corrections orders for trafficking at the time.
One of those orders was handed down at the County Court. The court was told Lam had breached community orders four times in the past 18 months. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen, who sentenced Lam to one of the community orders last year, said he was disappointed given Lam had good prospects for rehabilitation. But he asked why he should give Lam another treatment option
given her recent offending. Mr Vandersteen noted Lam’s strong family support, particularly her mother who provided a $15,000 surety for Lam’s bail in June. “The life you’re leading is very different to what the family wants you to lead.” Lam was jailed for 18 months, with a six-month non-parole period. Her 90 days in remand custody will count as time served.
Civic Centre’s art Journey flows with passage of time By CASEY NEILL THREE canoe-shaped sculptures appear to glide through the Dandenong Civic Centre foyer. The City of Greater Dandenong officially launched new art work Journey on Thursday 3 September. Artists Kris Coad and Julie Squires created the bone china pieces especially for the space and to reflect the area’s past, present and future. Their form symbolises the flow of time, the cycle of growth and evolution, and concepts of passage and journeying. Each represents a different time in Dandenong’s development - from pre-colonial times to its agricultural period and more recent cultural diversity boom. The canoes’ gently undulating surfaces are reminiscent of the natural world and their shadows rippling over the walls create the sense of quiet reflection. Kris Coad is an award-winning ceramic artist who for more than 20 years has divided her time between her studio and being an arts educator. Her work has featured in more than 70 exhibitions. Award-winning sculptor Julie Squires has over the past 18 years produced more than 20 public art sculptures and installations across Australia. She specialises in steel and bronze sculpture.

Truck company’s birthday racing rev-up IVECO invited V8 racing royalty to celebrate its 40th birthday. Red Bull Racing Australia drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes toured the truck manufacturer’s Dandenong South facility on Wednesday 9 September. They also inspected the Red Bull Racing Iveco Stralis AS-L race car transporter. Iveco Trucks Australia has been in Dandenong since 1952 when International Harvester, as it was then known, developed a truck manufacturing facility. “I hope the facility will remain in Dandenong another 60 years at least,” spokesman Ron Grasso said earlier this year when the company was a finalist for the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Large Manufacturer of the Year award. Mr Grasso said Iveco was a high value-add, agile truck manufacturer. IVECO became part of the Fiat group in 1992 and is now the commercial and specialty vehicle brand of multi-national CNH Industrial following a Fiat-Case New Holland merger. Mr Grasso said the deal created new opportunities for the group in Australia, particularly in research and development. The business expects to grow in the coming years through bus and

Keep it fair says Ombudsman BUSINESSES in the Dandenong region are on the Fair Work Ombudsman’s radar. Fair Work inspectors will audit up to 250 businesses in Dandenong, Dandenong South and Springvale over the next three months. They’ll check that employers are paying the correct minimum hourly rates, penalty rates, allowances and loadings, and providing appropriate meal breaks. Inspectors will also monitor record-keeping and pay-slip obligation compliance. They will randomly select businesses across a range of sectors, including road freight transport, building and industrial cleaning, carpentry, takeaway food, cafes and restaurants. Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the Dandenong region was home to thousands of businesses and was a persistent source of requests for assistance from workers. She said the campaign’s aims included ensuring employers were aware of their workplace responsibilities and how the agency could help them to access, understand and apply information to build a culture of compliance. “It’s important we check that workers are being paid correctly, but we also want to be proactive about ensuring employers understand their obligations,” she said. “Inspectors will make face-to-face visits to dozens of businesses during the campaign so they can offer employers tailored assistance to rectify any non-compliance issues.”

Just show up for this golden day By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE Doveton Show proves that a day out at the show doesn’t have to cost families hundreds of dollars. For the cost of a goldcoin entry, families can stroll Myuna Farm’s grounds filled with low-cost rides, foods, showbags and free entertainers, animals and activities. The show’s treasurer Veronica Hill said the day out will certainly cost a family less than to get through this
month’s Royal Melbourne Show gates - ticketed at $70plus family entry or $105 for an entry and rides package. “The whole idea of the show is to supply a cheap alternative for people who can’t otherwise afford to go to the show,” Ms Hill said. “There’s plenty of free activities. Someone could go in for a gold coin and not have to spend anything to keep themselves occupied for the whole day.” Crowds are clearly voting
with their feet. When it started 11 years ago, about 3000 attended - last year drew a record crowd of more than 22,000. The show’s 10-member volunteer committee has spent six months organising attractions. Rides include a giant slide, jumping castle, dodgem cars, thrill rides, the farm’s train ride and bungee. There are also free childrens crafts and reading activities, vintage cars, music
and a stage and roving performance by stilt-walking clown Flash Twinkle Toes’ Silly Circus. Community groups will also be raising money at food stalls. “It’s a great family day out,” Ms Hill said. “People are enjoying it and that’s why they’re coming back.” Doveton Show is at Myuna Farm, 182 Kidds Road, Doveton, on Sunday 20 September from 10am to 4pm.

Judy proud of Anzac legend By CASEY NEILL DANDENONG RSL is mourning the loss of “a most remarkable lady and a very good friend”. Berwick resident Judy Murdoch passed away peacefully on 3 September following a cancer battle. Dandenong sub-branch president John Wells said she knew the deeper meanings of the red poppy. Judy’s father Jim Hardy was the sub-branch president for 13 years and was “revered across the state”. Her mother Anne made her mark in the Dandenong Ladies Auxiliary, started in 1936 and formally organised in 1949. “They were a couple among the ‘royalty’ of the RSL, and Judy was brought up with the Anzac spirit and the RSL ethics as part of her life,” John said. “But Judy - and it was a brave man indeed who would call her Judith - was to make her own mark in her own inimitable way. “She went to her first auxiliary meeting in a pusher, but when she got her driving licence she was appointed with no consultation at all as a volunteer driver for the auxiliary, even in her lunch hours. “It

didn’t worry her, because she had grown up with idea of service to others.” John said that with her drive and commitment, it was inevitable that Judy would become a leader for the local auxiliary for more years than she would admit. “And president for many, many years. The leadership she provided was very real
and very effective as the auxiliary evolved and became an ever more important part of the RSL,” John said. Judy was elected State Branch Ladies Auxiliary president, providing leadership and support to auxiliaries all over Victoria and sometimes interstate. When her three years as president came to an end, those in charge changed the rules so she could stay on, and she clocked up nine years in the position. John said Judy was a few years ago elected to the Dandenong sub-branch committee. “She was the first women in that position and, thanks to her pioneering ways, she will not be the last,” he said. “She has always been a proud servant of the values with which she grew up. “She has done more good in more ways than most of us will ever know about.” Greater Dandenong Councillor John Kelly said Judy “was a legend around the town and will be sadly missed”. Fundraiser for Syria HILLCREST Christian College Year 12 student Alana Cohen is a person of action. She could not stand idly by after seeing the atrocities in Syria and she felt compelled to do something about it! “After reading about the crisis in Syria and the awful living conditions of displaced refugees, the Senate (student leadership) team and I felt compelled to do something to help,” she said. Their team wanted to raise money for the cause and also raise awareness throughout Hillcrest Christian College, looking beyond the foreign aid that our own country offers, in order to change the perspective of students in the college. “The whole process has made us realise how blessed and fortunate we are to have the
things that we have,” continued Alana. Syria has been a war zone for the past four years and as a result, 7.6 million people are now displaced inside Syria, and another four million have fled to neighbouring countries where they live in severely overcrowded refugee camps. These people have had everything taken away from them and have lost their belongings, homes, livelihoods, families and even their lives. For three weeks the Hillcrest Senate team spoke at school assemblies to raise awareness of the plight of the Syrian Refugee Crisis and they sold baked goods that operated on the premise of an ‘honesty’ donation.
The fundraiser culminated on Friday 31 July, when the student leadership team hosted a burger barbeque at lunchtime (pictured), where they sold 200 burgers. Students who also donated funds were given the opportunity to have their handprint taken on the day, with their name written beside it, with the purpose of hanging it in their library as a visual support of the cause. “We were overwhelmed by the support from teachers and students and we hope that the small actions of ordinary people at Hillcrest Christian College can have an extraordinary impact in the lives of the Syrian people”, concluded Alana. “That’s the call we’ve chosen to respond to as global citizens.”

SEABL - Grand Final
Faith no more By JARROD POTTER “I THINK these girls will go down forever as one of the best SEABL teams and I think they deserve that.” These were the simple words of a proud Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson after her SEABL juggernauts shone in a 76-63 triumph over Kilsyth, to win their fourth championship in six years. It was a night to be in green and gold as Dandenong fought off every Kilsyth fight-back - every Rosie Moult (14 points) inspired run-on and anything else the visitors could muster. Amelia Todhunter - who spent 13 weeks on the sidelines earlier this year with a knee injury - displayed her SEABL class, stepping up to the big stage to rattle off 19 points, while constantly creating headaches in the backcourt with long-time guard partner Aimie Clydesdale (12 points).
The Cobras didn’t bow down to Rangers’ pressure though - retiring SEABL great Sarah Parsons (4 points, 16 rebounds) toiled under the ring while Steph Cumming (13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists), and Cassandra Sant (12 points, 7 rebounds) pushed on even as the gap increased. Sant in particular battled back on court after going down with a knee injury through the second term. Kilsyth claimed the lead through the second term - powering to the front off Parsons and Chantella Perera (10 points) - but Dandenong didn’t let it stay that way for long. Long-time SEABL team mates Todhunter, Clare Papavs (11 points), Alison Downie (8 points) and Faith Probst (3 points, 7 rebounds) ensured Kilsyth had no room to breathe defensively - clamping down to keep the Cobras to 32 after half-time.
SEABL women’s champions - the Dandenong Rangers - notched their spot in the history books with a fourth title in six years. 144027
Dandenong de-fanged the Cobras’ inside game while powering through its own as the Rangers pulled away in the last term - holding onto a 10-point lead throughout most of the clash. Jacinta Kennedy (17 points, 11 rebounds) - who earned her first SEABL championship and put down yet another double-double - Clydesdale and Papavs were sensational in the fourth term, with the latter knocking down the final trey to give her side a 13-point victory. “I would not choose anyone else to go to war with except these girls,” Anderson said. “In six years - and really it’s five years as one year I didn’t coach - it’s four out of five with us together. “I was just a blubbering mess when the siren went - but I don’t know when it will sink it, probably don’t have time to let it sink in, we’re straight into (WNBL) training again on Monday. “Let it sink in tonight (Saturday) and then it’s back to business.” Todhunter earned her second Barbara Barton Medal as the grand-final MVP and Anderson believed for her to get back on court this season is testament to her fighting spirit. “She might only be a tiny little thing but her heart is absolutely... whatever, you can fill in the blanks there, but she never stops,” Anderson said. “She’s so persistent and determined and professional. “She’s worked her little butt off to get back to this and credit to her and well done, it’s amazing.” Dandenong farewelled one of its absolute champions - captain and club mainstay Faith Probst - who retired after her 223rd and final SEABL match.
Amelia Todhunter was elite in the grand final win, earning her second Barbara Barton Medal as the match’s Most Valuable Player. 144027 Pictures: ROB CAREW In a fitting end - Probst reeled in one of her textbook, lunging rebounds late in the clash, before powering to the post to earn two free throws - what would turn out to be the last shots in a storied SEABL career. “Faith announced that today (Saturday), so we’ve all been very teary and I was a bit worried - do I tell them, do
I not tell them - but someone of that calibre deserves to be celebrated, so I sent that out today so they could be warned,” Anderson said. “We’re going to miss Faith - she’s been an amazing person for the league and for us.” It was Dandenong’s seventh women’s SEABL championship.
Well we Heard it through the grapevine By JARROD POTTER A BIG V championship was just reward for Keysborough BIG V star Malcolm Heard, who made the agonising decision to head overseas to continue his basketball dreams. Heard, 23, from Wilmington, Ohio, USA, made the difficult choice to head to Australia for his first BIG V season, but played an absolute starring role in Keysborough Cougars’ Division-2 men’s championship victory. Heard had finished his college commitments and decided to tour overseas and see if there was a professional spot on the horizon - his choice to become a Cougar the best, yet toughest, move he ever made. “I came over to Australia on a tour from the States - made a tour team that was coming to Australia to play against teams here for job opportunities,” Heard said. “This was my first year out of college so I thought it would be an amazing opportunity and great experience. “My year in Australia was probably one of the best and also toughest years of my life.” Heard had to leave behind his family - with two young daughters - but immediately felt at home with his new on-court family at Keysborough and the celebration of a championship win
made his decision all the more sweeter. “Being away from family and especially my two children was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I stayed with it and it resulted in not only a great experience but developed a unique bond with a great group of people,” Heard said. “Not only that but winning a championship my first year overseas definitely makes it even better.” Keysborough had an up-and-down home-and-away season and endured a semi-final loss to Western Port, but fought its way through to the championship match. It was one for the ages as the BIG V Division-2 championship needed all three games in the series to decide the winner. The resounding 66-53 victory on the away court was led by Heard’s efforts at both ends of the court as he rattled off 20 points, 17 rebounds to finish the grand final series with 77 points and 44 rebounds in a scintillating display of on-court leadership.“The feeling I had after winning the championship is indescribable - I had a lot of emotions running through my head because of everything that has occurred in my past,” Heard said. “Being away from home it made me feel like it was worth it in the end and also a sense of accomplishment in
the start of my career. “Not only that but it felt great to win it with the group of guys I did it with - a lot of guys were desperate for a championship after being there so many times and not winning it.” It could have unravelled quickly after the 80-81 second grand-final defeat levelled the series 1-1, but Heard put the third match fight back down to defensive grit as he ensured the Steelers’ American star Manny Hendrix didn’t have a free run at the basket. “Fighting back to win the championship has to be credited to our preparation - we were extremely prepared mentally and physically,” Heard said. “The thing that stands out to me the most would be our mentality on defence... I’m the type of guy who always wants to guard the best player because if he doesn’t have a good game it results in a win for my team.” Heard is one of the nominees for BIG V D2M Most Valuable Player, which would cap off a sensational debut senior season for the powerhouse forward and if everything works for him and his family, he’d be thrilled to come back to Australia again. “Yes I can definitely see myself back in Australia, I love the country along with all of the people… it’s truly is an amazing place,” Heard said. “Regardless of what happens or
Keysborough import Malcolm Heard celebrated his inaugural Australian basketball season with a BIG V championship. 143430 Picture: JARROD POTTER where I end up, I intend to work my ass off and establish a name for myself, but Australia will always have a special place in my heart.” He wanted to thank the club, coach Nathan Vogt, the Sliwinski family, and everyone involved for making him feel welcome in his inaugural BIG V sea-
son, adding “they are and always will be family.” Keysborough has set up a GoFundMe page to help bring Heard back for the 2016 season. Anyone interested in donating, can do so at http://www.gofundme. com/523rkn6s.

Home home... on the Rangers By JARROD POTTER THE time was right for Jacinta Kennedy to return to her basketball home. Kennedy (nee Hamilton), 33, will resume her Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) basketball career after a 10-season hiatus - returning to the Dandenong Rangers’ roster for the 2015/16 season. The three-time WNBL champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist retired when she was only 24 to move overseas to support her husband, former Socceroo Josh Kennedy, and his burgeoning professional soccer career and to start her family. With Josh hanging up the boots this year, Kennedy decided she could devote herself to the rigours of WNBL life once again. “I’m excited to get back in the league - I didn’t think it would happen,
but I’m really, really happy it has and I suppose I’m a bit proud of myself to get back to that level,” Kennedy said. “I just set myself a goal of having a really good SEABL season - I said I had to have a good season to even consider it. “We’ve got the three kids, my husband is back in Australia now and has retired recently so it was just a matter of seeing realistically if I could do it and logistically with the kids and all of their stuff, so I’m lucky to have great support at home with him and we’ve kind of figured it out and have managed it.” With tall tandem Lauren Scherf and Alex Bunton also in the line-up, Kennedy isn’t sure what her role will be, but is thrilled to once again feature in a Dandenong WNBL campaign and add to her 132-game career.
“It’s exciting - we’ve started pre-season… I think we’re two or three weeks in and I’m loving it… really enjoying it,” Kennedy said. “I hope I can be a contributor for the team - my role is probably a bit unknown at this point but that’s exciting and a bit nerve-wracking… I’m just going to push myself as much as I can, and really be a strong contributor for the team. “We’ve got two six-foot-five girls in Lauren Scherf and Alex Bunton… trying to fight with them in the post and get position and really having to think my way through things has been really enjoyable.” Also joining the Rangers’ roster in 2015/16 will be point guard Amelia Todhunter who left the Melbourne

They join a new-look Dandenong roster under incoming coach Larissa Anderson who was excited to get two exceptional players who will fit into the Rangers’ roster with ease. “Obviously the two of them are phenomenal players, phenomenal peo-
ple, fit our culture perfectly, work their butts off and will bring a great deal to our group,” Anderson said. “I’m really pleased that we’ve got them on board and for Jacinta to be out of the game for as long as she has been, it’s really exciting to welcome her back to the Rangers and Amelia as well - it’s her home.”

These Otters spread their butterfly wing By JARROD POTTER MAKING waves in the state ranks, the Oasis Otters Swimming Club members had a number of great swims at the Victorian Age Short Course Championships, held last week at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Showing the state that Dandenong-area swimming should not to be underestimated, Otters’ stars Hamed Afshin Azar, Hassan (Sam) Afshin Azar, Bridget Lin, Henry Kuok and Dheeraj Kulkarni surged to finish in the top ranks of Victorian junior swimming. Hamed Afshin Azar stormed home to pick up two medals at the event - a silver medal in the 200-metre butterfly and bronze medal in the 200-metre breaststroke as well as picking up finals qualifications for the 100-metre
breaststroke (fourth), 200-metre individual medley (fifth) and 100-metre backstroke (fifth). Afshin Azar’s brother Sam had three finals finishes with a sixth in the 100-metre breaststroke, another sixth in the 200-metre breaststroke, a seventh in the 200-metre individual medley, and a seventh in the 100-metre butterfly. While Kuok gained a sixth in the 100-metre butterfly, Kulkarni a seventh in the 200-metre butterfly and Lin an eight in the 200-metre butterfly. All going to show the butterfly ranks at Oasis are on the rise. The club swims out of the Oasis Swimming Centre on Stud Road. Nunawading’s David Antequera battles it out against Dandenong City’s Chris Antoniadis. 144276 Picture: JARROD POTTER
By JARROD POTTER FAREWELLING 2015 with a bang, Dandenong City lit up its NPL1 seasonfinale with a 7-1 romp over Nunawading City. With Nunawading cemented to the bottom of the ladder and Dandenong City well and truly up the pointy end, it spelled chaos from the first whistle. Even with star midfielder Sean Seavill (unwell) sitting out the match Dandenong City had no trouble penetrating the Nunawading back four. City unleashed early and often as Dario Matkovic (8’) started the onslaught - working his way into open space from Erkan Filiz’s beautiful leftside run and equally precise pass - and four more goals before half time left no doubt as to the king on the day. David Di Lorio (25’, 30’, 37’, 47’) had a field day - his four-goal haul was superb and highlighted by his hat-trick goal. Di Lorio found room at the top of the box approaching the half and booted an
absolute rocket into the top right corner of the net - which would have been too hard for even the NPL top brass keepers to stop. To their credit the visitors ensured a double-digit thumping was not on the cards, booting a consolation goal in the second half. The only sore spot for Dandenong City was missing its chances throughout the second half - as it powered to the front of the goals time-after-time but failed to strike as clinically as in the first 45. Getting a chance to play his youngsters, Aaron Healey threw his best juniors onto the park and the lads excelled with the taste of NPL soccer. Capping off the home-town rampage, Filiz (67’) made it a sensational six before 16-year-old striker Daniel Jurina (90+2’) came off the bench and toe-poked his second attempt in the box to give the City boys plenty to celebrate heading into the off-season.“Over the last six weeks… I think that’s five wins
straight now… the effort and I suppose discipline from the players has been outstanding and to finish off the season the way we have is credit to them,” Healey said. “I don’t think it was our best performance today - played some better football and lost this year - but credit to score seven goals. “Great also in the last half-an-hour to have four young guys on up the front - talking 16, 17, 18-year-olds on - and that’s the future of our club.” The win gives Dandenong City third position in NPL1 East - with a 14-6-8 record - and Healey was pleased to finish off strongly despite a rough patch through the middle of 2015. Meanwhile Springvale White Eagles was flogged 0-5 by Richmond SC in its final clash of the season. And in other results, Endeavour Hills Fire lost its State League 4 playoff against Old Camberwell Grammarians 1-2, as did Springvale City in State League 5, downed by Kings Domain.

SPORT GRIDIRON VICTORIA Women - Week 1
There’s no Love lost By JARROD POTTER FACING the ghosts of Berwick Miners Diamonds’ past, the newlook gridiron side gallantly fought out its 6-18 season opening loss to Croydon on Saturday. But it was the Diamonds of old that shattered the current line-up’s winning chances, particularly running back Bliss Love, who’s 70yard touchdown run in the fourth sealed the game. Despite losing defensive captain Erin Gubatunga (shoulder) to a potential season-ending injury, the Diamonds’ defence shone. Led by linebacker Silia Johannson, the Diamonds forced fumbles and capitalised on a number of Croydon errors. Neither side could string together its offence through a hard-fought, scoreless first half, but it started to open up after the main break as the Rangers found some space out wide and rattled off the first score. But Berwick returned fire soon after with a rushing touchdown at the start of the fourth term to level the ledger 6-6, as a brilliant twopoint conversion by running back Sarah Mu was disallowed for encroachment. Croydon would run in two more touchdowns thereafter to set the final margin, but Berwick didn’t shoulder arms - with new quarterback Jen Allen sitting in the shotgun for most of the final term as she went aerial to try and bridge the gap. Fingertip misses will have frustrated the Diamonds’ staff, but widereceivers Sam Kelly - only 17 years

and a bigger matter of confidence,” Murphy said. “They’re getting open, getting to the spots they need to be hit, getting 90 per cent right, but the last 10 per cent of getting the ball in the hands… “It’s a good team - they’re loyal to each other and will have each other’s backs throughout the season.” Murphy praised his young wide receiver Kelly in particular, who has
only just started her gridiron journey. “Sam Kelly - she’s a gun - she’s quick and has great balance on her feet and she’s got beautiful hands,” Murphy said. “Hurt her knee in the first half, but she pushed it off and kept going.” The Diamonds will travel again in Round 2 to face the Northern Lady Raiders on Saturday 19 September from 1.30pm.
A barking Bewdy by Virtue By JASON ADAMS BANJO Bewdy began well from box eight and mustered pace to lead around the first bend. She quickly extended her gap to lead by six lengths down the back straight, before going to win by two-and-three-quarter lengths in a solid 29.67. Trainer Ken Virtue was pleased to see a new side of his chaser that he hasn’t seen before. “I saw a different side of her, which was good - she accelerated and was forced to sit three wide at the turn which I thought was good - rather than just going to the front and being one-dimensional,” said Virtue. Although it was Banjo Bewdy’s first race at the track, it wasn’t her

first visit having trialed exceptionally well prior to the run. “I’ve only trialed her once at Sandown and she went 4.89 to the first split, she went 5.08 last night which is alright but it’s a long way off 4.89 isn’t it?” laughed Virtue. “Andrew (owner) and I bought her when she was eight-monthsold for $2000, as a potential mating for Banjo Boy.” After spending her infancy in Victoria, Banjo Bewdy was sent to New South Wales to be educated. “We sent her away to NSW to be broken in as she was an absolute nightmare - she never stopped barking.” My wife and I were planning to move house and she said ‘you can’t take her with us, she’s going

turned to Victoria shortly after. “I thought we’re going to have to put up with the barking - but she’s got a lot better, she’s now very well behaved.”
WHILE it will not play in Casey Comets jerseys, the south-east has been well-represented in a Southern United consortium bid to join the inaugural Women’s National Premier Leagues (WNPL) Victorian competition. The Comets - in combination with Langwarrin, Mornington, Peninsula Strikers and Seaford Soccer Clubs - decided to go in together to create the super-club encompassing Victoria’s entire south-east region. Football Federation Victoria (FFV) announced the successful applicants last week with Southern United featuring in the list of eight clubs. Casey Comets president Stuart McLeod said the move ensured the south-east’s best players will have a chance to compete in the peak competition while retaining the heritage and history of the Casey Comets at the community level. “We were very happy with the outcome - it’s something that we believe will be the best for soccer in the south-east or southern area,” McLeod said. “We felt that most clubs in our area weren’t in a position to be a standalone club… when I heard the news we were rapt and very excited as a club and a committee.” Also adding to the strength of the southeast bid is the likelihood that Comets Stadium will host the majority of United matches, based upon the Comets’ WPL history and the current facilities at the Cranbourne-based complex. “At this stage Casey will be hosting a lot of the games... the indication is that Casey has all the criteria from the FFV and we’ve got the ground space to accommodate Southern United and Casey Comets as well,” McLeod said. “That’s why Casey was so strong in our bid as we’ve got the facilities in place and coming from a WPL point of view we already had the structures.” McLeod encouraged all players in the south-east region - ranging from Mornington Peninsula, Frankston, Casey, Cardinia, Dandenong and Gippsland - to try out for the club, but if that didn’t pan out he hoped they would return to their community club roots to continue strengthening the local game. “What we’re telling our club and telling other clubs is to please come and try for Southern United - if you don’t make it, return to your community club,” McLeod said. Southern United is scouting for talented girls, women, coaches and administrators to get involved from the Mornington Peninsula, Casey, Gippsland and Greater Dandenong areas for the inaugural season, beginning winter next year. For more information on Southern United Women’s Soccer Club, contact Casey Comets club secretary Dawn Stone on dawnstone@ caseycomets.com.au or via the United Facebook page www.facebook.com/southernutd.

IT’S not every day someone gets a call from a car company offering a free trip overseas. As unusual as it is, that is exactly the experience of Peter Ebenwaldner from Linak Australia, a local business based in Hallam. “I was sitting in my office and received a call from Kia explaining that due to my loyalty as a Kia owner, I had been nominated by Dandenong Kia to be a part of this trip of a lifetime to visit the Kia headquarters in Korea,” Peter said. “My first thought was this a prank call. Facelift into Focus By EWAN KENNEDY ALTHOUGH Ford referred to this latest Focus as, “the new Focus” during the design and engineering and styling presentations it’s actually a solid facelift of the model that first went on sale here in 2011. The most noticeable change is probably the sharper squared-off shape of the front foglight housings, but also note the slimmer headlights and the slightly sleeker slope of the bonnet. Ford’s signature trapezoidal grille has also been modified with a sharper look. The rear-end follows the lead of the front, with slimmer lights and modified lines that give the car a wider look when viewed rear on. Inside, the basic shape remains but detailed changes to the instruments, controls and trim give it a slightly more elegant look and feel. Ford has been into hightech automotive communication for many years now and Focus infotainment system in Focus is the latest Sync2 unit. This lets the driver operate the audio system, satellite navigation and a linked smartphone with voice commands.
Model range
Ford's facelifted Focus has exceptionally neat frontal appearance. It also accesses the climate control air conditioning. Aiming to give the Focus a more upmarket image Ford Australia has taken the interesting decision to drop the lower cost Ambiente model - the range now starting with the Focus Trend that was previously a midrange contender. Focus continues to be sold as a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. Ford Australia has rationalised the Focus range, pulling the turbo-diesel off the import list and replacing the non-turbo 1.6-litre petrol powerplant with a new design 1.5-litre turbopetrol, EcoBoost in Ford speak.
Also new is a conventional torque converter six-speed automatic transmission, this replaces the dual-clutch unit that has proven rather troublesome according to our contacts behind the scenes at Ford. A six-speed manual gearbox is offered as a price leader, but only on the Focus Trend hatchback. Build quality was fine on the cars we reviewed, then road tested during a comprehensive drive program out of Adelaide. Turbo lag is minimal thanks to the compact design of the cylinder head and exhaust manifold, some delay is inevitable but once the little Ford powerplant gets up to speed and into
Trend 1.5-litre five-door hatch: $23,390 (manual), $24,390 (automatic); Sport 1.5-litre five-door hatch: $26,490 (manual), $27,490 (automatic); Titanium 1.5-litre five-door hatch: $32,690 (automatic); Trend 1.5-litre four-door sedan: $24,390 (automatic) Titanium 1.5-litre four-door sedan: $32,690 (automatic).
its torque band it has decent performance. The new automatic transmission works nicely and quickly senses the driver’s needs. Which is just as well because manual overrides are by way of a silly little vertically mounted switch on the gear lever that’s not easy to use. We didn’t get a chance to drive the Focus Sport during this introductory drive program, but enjoyed our time in the Titanium and Trend. Handling, always a strong point of the European designed Fords, is excellent, with more than enough road grip for almost all drivers and unobtrusive electronic assistance should they make a mistake.
There’s a lovely feel through the steering wheel and the car can be steered by way of the throttle if you’re into enthusiastic driving. Considerable work has gone into further reducing sound and vibration in the cabin and this small-medium Ford has the sort of interior feel of quiet, smooth progress that would have required a Fairlane or LTD a couple of decades back. We have long said the Ford Focus deserves at least a podium place in its class in the sales race, but has struggled for reasons we really can’t fathom. Will this latest model improve its standing? It certainly has the credentials to do so.
