Domestics night By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA RANGES Police weathered an “out of control” weekend for domestic violence incidents, according to Monbulk Police Sergeant, Mark Knight. Sgt Knight told the Mail on Monday, 14 September, that police were called out to numerous domestic violence incidents over the weekend, from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September. “Saturday night was out of control, absolutely out of control,” Sgt Knight said. “I had 10 incidents before 1700 hours, and I started at 3pm (1500 hours), and it just got worse after that. “It just went on and on all night.” Sgt Knight said he worked as the Police Service Area (PSA) Supervisor over the weekend, and that police were called out to spots right across the Yarra Ranges, from Healesville to Yarra Junction and Monbulk. He said a “number of offenders” were arrested for breaching intervention orders, with about five of the family violence incidents occurring in Monbulk alone. Sgt Knight gave the example of a 43-year-old Monbulk man, who was arrested on Friday, 11 September. He said the man had been hiding in his ex-wife’s front yard, before smashing the front window of the property. The man was charged with stalking, unlawful assault and criminal damage, and was bailed to appear in court on 4 February 2016. Sgt Knight said the victim would go to court on Tuesday, 15 September, to have an intervention order put in place. “That was a really good cleanup, that,” he said. “He would have caused that family a number of concerns.” Sgt Knight said the man did not previously have an intervention order in place against him.

When asked whether those charged with domestic violence complied with intervention orders and their conditions, Sgt Knight said offenders were “constantly breaching them”. “We feel they’re just not adhering to the orders that the magistrates make,” he said. “Because they’re a civil process, they don’t see them as a big deal until the criminal sides of the breaches commence.” He said that, once offenders spent the weekend in a cell, sometimes the message sank in. But with consistent breaching of the orders and “the seriousness and nature of offending”, Sgt Knight said those charged with domestic violence were rarely just released on summons, instead being charged and bailed to appear at court. “With consistent breaching by offenders, we look at pro-remand, that side of things, with remanding men,” he said. “If it’s a first-time offence, we wouldn’t, of course. “We’ve got this pro-arrest strategy, and we’re considering remanding, further remanding all of the time.” But he emphasised that each case was “taken on its merits”, rather than taking blanket action on the matter. “It’s just the onus is on each case,” Sgt Knight said. “If the circumstances warrant a remand, we’ll make applications before a bail justice ... or to the magistrates.” Any person can apply for an intervention order through the Magistrates’ Court - though an appointment is needed for some courts. Police can also assist in applying for an order in some cases. Police are also able to refer people concerned for their safety on to other support services, as well as listening to concerns, even if no crime has occurred. In an emergency, or for immediate help from police, always call triple zero.

Tulips and a giant clog in the sun Spring has sprung and the Tesselaar Tulip Festival kicked off this weekend to celebrate the beginning of a new season. The tulips were out in magnificent bloom and visitors travelled from all over to attend the opening weekend of the festival. There is live music, belly dancing, a giant clog, local food vans and so much more on offer to welcome in the spring season. Pictured are mum Amanda with Annika, 2, and Ashwyn, 4, of Woori Yallock having fun in the Giant Clog that will be on display for the duration of the festival. By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS NEARLY 100 people turned out for a candlelit vigil in Belgrave to commemorate the life of Syrian toddler Aylun Kurdi and other refugees who have lost their lives. The event was organised in less than 24 hours by hills based refugee outreach group Kindred and was part of the national Light the Dark movement. The group was only formed recently and Brenna Thompson said the main aim was to welcome and support refugees in the community. “It’s about building a more kind and compassionate Australia that welcomes refugees,” she said. The idea to hold a vigil in Belgrave came about when Ms Thompson and other members

of Kindred could not make it to the vigil being held in the city. “It’s a long way to go from the hills, especially when you have small children,” Ms Thompson said. “Instead we wanted to organise an event where local people could show their support for this movement as well.” Kindred also runs food drives in conjunction with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to support refugee families living in poverty, as well as regularly visit families in detention centres around Melbourne. “We have been a lifeline for a lot of people in the community,” Ms Thompson said. Virginia Gough of the group said that the candlelit vigil was a way for people to show their support for refugees and asylum seekers.

“Tonight is a time to reflect and a time for action,” she said. “Things desperately need to change and we as a society can’t keep going on like this.” Ms Gough said the Light the Dark movement had the potential to create real change in the community for refugees. “I’m hoping for a groundswell to come from this,” she said. “A rising up in support for refugees in Belgrave, Victoria, Australia, and the world. We need to show more hospitality to the people who need it most.” The proceeds of sale from soups, coffee, and cakes from the vigil all went to Kindred so they could continue to provide support to refugees and asylum seekers in Melbourne.

A MAN is expected to face charges after attempting to steal four segways from Rochford Winery in August - only to get bogged on the way out. At 5.30pm on Sunday 16 August, a man is believed to have stolen the segways, valued at $30,000 from a shed at the Coldstream winery. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said the burglary was bungled when the vehicle used for the robbery became bogged on the way out. “Subsequently, we identified an offender, and that person has been interviewed and a brief of evidence is being prepared,” he said. Det Sgt Barrow said no charges had yet been laid against the man, a 29-year-old of no fixed place of abode. The segways were recovered from the car. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com. au.

Event organiser and president of the Monbulk Business Network, John Coleman, said recently it was a great event for the town. “Our aim has always been to put Monbulk on the map, as a place to visit and shop,” Mr Coleman said. “The event has grown enormously since it started and we are encouraging all in the community to show their support. “It’s been a great day, with a variety of activities to see and do, not to mention the quality of cars and bikes on display.” 1198738-ACM38-15

THE third annual Monbulk Classic Car and Bike Show revved into action this weekend, with motoring enthusiasts showing off their most impressive possessions. Monbulk police station even had a few cars on display from previous policing eras gone by, when police cars resembled taxis. Featured above is a classic Holden VL ’Interceptor’ Commodore, which has proven highly sought-after by car collectors. The turbo-charged vehicles

were used successfully as pursuit vehicles, but were equally as successfully in winning the adoration of Holden enthusiasts. The event included swap meets, sales of accessories and professionals who complete the restoration and maintenance of the vehicles exhibiting. To make the day extra special, all monies raised through entry fees and donations were directed to local charities, clubs and volunteer associations. Estimates suggested the event drew as many as 2000 people to

Futile bid to steal segways

POLICE are on the hunt for tool thieves who made off with equipment from SkyHigh in Mount Dandenong last week. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said between 10pm on 9 September and 7am the following day, unknown persons broke into the workshop area at the venue, on Observatory Road. The burglars then made off with a Kawasaki 4x4 All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), several chainsaws, fuel tanks and generators, with a rough value of $8000. Det Sgt Barrow said the thieves would have needed a ute, a ute with a trailer or a truck to take all of the equipment. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have information, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au. A CROYDON man will face court later this month, after breaking into a council compound in Lilydale by driving through the gates. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said between 5pm on Monday 7 September and 6.20am the next morning, the 28-year-old man was believed to had broken into an Industrial Park Drive address in Lilydale. “Offenders broke into shipping containers and several vehicles,” Det Sgt Barrow said. Shortly after the break-in, Det Sgt Barrow said the man stole an Isuzu tip truck and crashed it through the boom gates at a Yarra Ranges Council compound in Nelson Road, Lilydale. He was arrested nearby, and police have charged him with theft of a motor car and going equipped to steal, among other offences. The truck was recovered by police in Oates Crescent in Lilydale. He has been remanded, and will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 28 September.

Secondary college vandalised POLICE are searching for witnesses after a group of people broke into the Upper Yarra Secondary College campus last weekend. At 8.30pm on Saturday 5 September, police believe a group of men and women entered the Little Yarra Road campus in Yarra Junction and sprayed graffiti on the exterior of some of the buildings. “They then broke in via the roof and caused damage inside,” Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Pat Barrow said. Nothing was reported stolen in the incident. Anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Clip drives home violence message By PETER DOUGLAS WA R B U RTO N - M I L L G ROV E footballer and father, Brendon Murphy, is leading the charge in the region to raise awareness of domestic violence. After co-ordinating a short-film clip on the issue, which includes key messages from local footballers, his efforts have received huge support through social media. His story has also featured on ABC television. The project has received full support from the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League, which is encouraging the public to share the video with the hashtag #heroesforzeroes. Mr Murphy said he felt compelled to raise awareness. “I was watching a program about a woman who had been killed in a domestic violence incident,” he said. “I was sitting there with my oneyear-old daughter and I became emotional. “It played on my mind for a while, so I decided to do something about it.” Mr Murphy called on the help of two friends, who are both involved with television and film-making. With their assistance, the trio wrote, shot and edited the one-minute clip, which features eight clubs and nine players. Initially, they hoped it would receive about 1000 views, but those expectations were quickly exceeded. As of today, the clip has enjoyed

The short film featured many players from the league, who were spreading the positive message. almost 87,000 views. Mr Murphy hoped the clip will leave an impression. “I believe education is the key,” he said. “This is a great target audience because football clubs span such a range of ages. “A president is usually in their sixties, but there are also junior players and under 18s. “It’s great to get the message out there.”

Mr Murphy’s ultimate aim is for the clip to be re-created, word for word, among other football/netball leagues. So far, AFL Tasmania has already inquired about doing the same. “That alone has made it worthwhile,” he said. The clip can be viewed on the Mail’s facebook page, www.Facebook.com/MailNewsGroup, or at mail.starcommunity.com.au.

Retain ward status quo plea from councillors By JESSE GRAHAM THE first step of the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC)’s review into the Yarra Ranges Council has finished, with a preliminary report set to be released at the end of the month. The review, which occurs for councils every three election cycles, aims to ensure fair representation for all voters, and assesses the number of councillors and wards, among other issues. The first round of public submissions closed on Wednesday 2 September, and the VEC has since published the 18 submissions it received on its website. Three of these submissions were made from individual Yarra Ranges Councillors - Jim Child, Jason Callanan and Mike Clarke - while another was made on behalf of the council as a whole. Councillors Child, Callanan and Clarke, and the council’s submissions all recommended that the nine wards, nine councillors make-up of the council remain the same, with some boundary changes for wards. These boundary changes, suggested by Cr Callanan and the council, include redefining the Chandler Ward to take in the Monbulk Aquatics Centre and the whole of Wandin and for Streeton to expand slightly to have the Olinda Pool area, among other suggestions. With a submission from former councillor, Dianne Moore, five of the submissions asked for the ward and councillor make-up of the council to remain the same. Meanwhile, former-Lyster Ward councillor and Selby resident Samantha Dunn made a submission supporting a change to three wards - one for the Yarra Valley region, one for the urban areas of Lilydale and its surrounds, and another

for the Dandenong Ranges - with three councillors to be elected from each ward. Ms Dunn wrote that having three wards would join “communities of interest”, and ensure representation if a councillor was on leave. Of the 18 submissions, half recommended a change to the three wards, nine councillors. Three of the submissions recommended that 11 councillors be elected for the Yarra Ranges, with two of these recommending 11 wards and the other recommending larger, multi-councillor wards. The last submission contained detailed diagrams on how the electoral make-up of not only the Yarra Ranges, but the state as a whole, could be made up - including each village electing a leader, and these leaders then electing a mayor. The submission’s diagram featured 10 wards. Cr Child wrote in his submission that the current wards are “unique in their own right”, and that councillors have a “very strong knowledge” of their areas and communities. “I content that a multi-councillor ward combining the Ryrie and O’Shannassy wards would group together towns that have few common interests, such as Healesville and Warburton,” he wrote. The VEC is expected to release its preliminary report on the review on Wednesday 30 September - residents will then have until 5pm on 28 October to make further submissions. By 25 November, the final report will be released, and any changes will take place for the council’s October 2016 election. To view the submissions, visit vec. vic.gov.au.

Librar y van trial wins its place YARRA Ranges’ new and expanded mobile library service has been given the permanent go-ahead, after a successful sixmonth trial. Following an extensive review of library services, council announced it would trial a new flexi-service van to replace the ageing B-double library truck. The new van is able to bring more books to the community while also being flexible enough to deliver a greater range of programs to a wider audience. The 2014 review showed the old library truck, which had been in service for 30 years, no longer met community needs. Older residents and people with a disability were unable to physically access it and it was costly to run. The new flexi vehicle has no steps, making it more accessible and offers books, magazines and DVDs. It can also visit places the larger truck could not access. The flexi vehicle visits designated locations regularly, but can also attend festivals and events throughout each year as part of council’s mobile library service. Since the trial began in January, the flexi vehicle has visited various regular locations around the Yarra Ranges. Following the success of the trial period, the expanded flexi service will continue to

Project co-ordinator, MaryKate Hockey, from the PPWCMA, said these landholder grants were part of a package of activities to help local native animals. “We are now starting the third year of this five-year project,” she said. “Activities so far have included development of a detailed ecological character description of the area. “Now, in line with the planning, we are focusing on onground work to improve habitat at priority sites. “More landholder grants

IN REPLY to Mark Verschuur’s recent letter (Merlino needs to respond, ‘Mail’, 8 September). If Mr Verschuur had any understanding of our local community and the issues they care about, he would know that countless people - from all walks of life - were out campaigning for a Labor Government in Monbulk in the lead-up to the November 2014 election. These concerned community members were volunteering their time to campaign against a Liberal Government that closed down Swinburne Lilydale TAFE. A Liberal Government that ripped around $1 billion from our schools, waged war on our hard-working paramedics, and nearly destroyed our state’s TAFE system. It may be hard for Mr Verschuur to accept, but the fact

is I was re-elected as the Member for Monbulk because our local community wanted a Labor Government that put people first - not a Liberal Government that slashed vital education, health and TAFE services. All activity undertaken by my electorate officers, and Victorian Labor pool staff, was in keeping with parliamentary rules. I am proud to represent the people of Monbulk and will continue to fight for the issues that matter to our local community. James Merlino, Member for Monbulk.

Where’s the plan? ANY discussion about the Burnham Beeches redevelopment needs to carefully tease

apart the issues. The unique food culture of Shannon Bennett will, I’m sure, be warmly welcomed. The common garden variety of property development that we face will not. This entails quietly lobbying the Planning Minister, obscuring the scale of the land carveup, obtaining the requisite rezoning and, at the stroke of a pen, reaping massive windfall profits. Mr Bennett has offered residents the opportunity to just sit down with him over a coffee to discuss his plans. Yet, when I did ask probing questions, he simply replied, “It’s all in the business plan” and left it at that. I’m sure the community would be most grateful to Mr Bennett if he provides this business plan for all to study. Karl Williams, Tecoma.

Gembrook Primary holds Archies By JODIE SYMONDS GEMBROOK Primary School recently held its own Archibald Exhibition as part of Special Friends Day. Students from all grades invited their friends and family to the day, where they got to show off their achievements. The special event, held last month as part of Book Week, had the library open so every-

one could read books. There was also a sausage sizzle. Art teacher at the school, Linda Fraser, said she wanted to create an exhibition for students to showcase what they had learned during the year. “The students were so proud of the work, and the parents and friends really enjoyed it as well, Ms Fraser said. KALLISTA Primary School recently unearthed many talented young musicians through its performing arts day. With 10 different sessions running throughout the day, there was no shortage of fun and education for the students. School principal, Christine Finighan, and literacy coordinator, Marg, worked hard with the Musical Appreciation Group to prepare the many and diverse activities. Ms Finighan said the musical event was well received. “It was an inspiring day with lots of valuable forms of learning, and children were engaged in a rich variety of performing arts experiences, she said. Fortunately for the school, there were many talented parents who contributed. Included among these was Brad Barry, who plays bass guitar in the renowned Australian band Eddie Current Suppression Ring.

Sandi’s eye on crime By PETER DOUGLAS DANDENONG Ranges-based crime writer Sandi Wallace’s novel ‘Tell Me Why’ has been receiving rave reviews, winning the recent 2015 Davitt Award Reader’s Choice award. The novel is Wallace’s debut offering and also the first instalment in her ‘Rural Crime Files’ series, with the sequel ‘Black Saturday’ due to be released in November. Without giving too much away about the plot, the first novel is based on an unsolved mystery, which highlights the ‘darker side’ of picturesque Daylesford. Wallace said she became passionate about crime fiction early in her life and dreamed of being a crime writer. “It’s been a winding path to achieve that dream, with stints as a banker, paralegal, cabinetmaker, office manager, executive assistant, personal trainer and journalist,” she said.

The recent acknowledgement came through the Sisters in Crime Australia group, which is dedicated to celebrating women’s crime writing. The awards are named in honour of Ellen Davitt, who in 1865 wrote Australia’s first mystery novel, ‘Force and Fraud’. In accepting her award, Wallace said it had been an incredible journey. “It’s been a year of fantastic firsts: first book signing, crime writer panel, public book reading, launch party, radio interview, library talk, review, festival,” she said. “It has been a little daunting at times, but always exciting. “And I have made special friendships throughout.” If she hadn’t turned to writing, Wallace said she would have been a police detective. She grew up in suburban Melbourne, but now lives in the Dandenong Ranges with her husband and

AMERICAN Ultra is an offbeat action comedy with surprising heart. Absent-minded stoner Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) discovers that he’s actually an elite CIA sleeper agent, and has been targeted for termination. American Ultra is funny and viscerally exciting, but what stands out about it is its subtle flair with character dynamics. Mike is a sensitive, apprehensive guy prone to panic attacks, but unleashes deadly, subconscious combat training when threatened. He gradually develops into a better, more confident person by merging the best parts of both sides of himself. It’s also gratifying to see a male-led action film that features strong fe-

male characters. Connie Britton plays Lassetter, a feisty, no-nonsense agent who goes out of her way to guide and protect Mike. And yes, Mike’s primary motivation is to rescue his girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart, who has finally shaken off the Twilight franchise), but Phoebe is an authoritative figure who can hold her own in a fight. Mike and Phoebe have a touching relationship of mutual dependency under fire, with a decent twist about Phoebe’s identity. Mad Max: Fury Road (starring Charlize Theron) takes the cake this year for pro-active, awesome female characters, but American Ultra still delivers admirably. American Ultra satisfies with its goofball humour and brutal, well-choreographed action, but its deep, engaging characters make it rather special. - Seth Hynes

Pictured is entertainer Jenny Ellis with her owl puppet. Picture: JEREMY LAVENDER

Owl is ‘a hoot’, eyes wide open AWARD-WINNING puppeteer Jenny Ellis will soon be presenting her show, ’The Owl’s Apprentice’. As part of the school holidays program at Burrinja, Ellis will entertain audiences with a heart-warming, playful show, which combines shadow and hand puppetry with physical comedy and storytelling. The show is about

unique Australian animals. Meanwhile, after the show there will be an opportunity to experience the puppets up close with demonstrations. Ellis said there was plenty on offer for local families. “I hope the kids will learn that wisdom is many, many things,” she said. “It’s finding humour,

it’s persisting, not giving up, and learning to accept yourself.” The performance is perfect for ages 4 to 10 years and will run for 40 minutes. The show will be held on Tuesday, 29 September, at 11am and 2pm. Cost is $12 to $15. For more information, contact (03) 9754 8723 or visit www.burrinja.org.au.

ALONG with Theatre 1812, the ‘Mail’ is offering the chance to win a double-pass to the local theatre company’s latest offering, ‘Patient 12’. The new play will run from 1 to 24 October in the Upper Ferntree Gully company’s second performing space, the bakery@1812. This boutique theatre is built in the physical shell of an old bakery building, directly adjoining the main theatre, and is now integrated into the theatre complex. The theatre company often performs its more contemporary plays in this space. In this era piece, based in the year 1919 in a military hospital in Melbourne, the story focuses on a soldier returned from the battlefields of Europe. Against all odds, and in defiance of his injuries, he is still alive, although unidentifiable and with no hope of recovery. Known only as Patient 12, and with no known family, mystery surrounds this man. However, circumstantial factors enable a shortlist of possible identities to be compiled and their families contacted. Patient 12’s identity is known to each visitor, but by a different name. Depending on their individual need, he becomes who they need him to be; and their needs reflect their individual stories and the environment of post-war Australia in 1919. To win a double pass to see this performance, simply tell us your favourite thing about attending local theatre performances. Email editor@mailnewsgroup.com.au.

THE property 'Tannochbrae' is an impressive hills residence on about 1.5 acres. Set high on the northern side of the Kallista ridgeline, bathed in sunshine but hidden away in a pocket of large homes on one-acre-plus blocks that only locals would know about, is this spectacular property with peace, privacy and views. The home has four bedrooms with a potential fifth if required, three additional living areas (four if not converted to the fifth bedroom), two levels of decking to take in those magnificent northern views and the kind of privacy that is often expected but seldom found. The home is fully renovated in a fresh modern style with a floorplan that could suit a professional couple with guests or equally a large family. The natural light throughout the living areas is one of the home's best assets and the cook of the household certainly won’t be complaining about the view from the enormous kitchen window. The grounds consist of rolling lawns, an ornamental pond and fruit trees. With rich mountain soils, northern orientation, oodles of room and plentiful water storage, this property is the perfect place for to realise the dream of growing your own vegies. Remote controlled gates open on to an asphalt driveway leading to a double garage and a single carport. The shedding doesn’t end there, with a separate branch of the asphalt driveway leading to a second double garage ideal for that special 'toy', and further down the garden is yet other garage just for those things that shouldn't clog up the man shed, like the ride-on.

AFL talent program is scouting BUDDING football players in the Dandenong Ranges region are being encouraged to show their talents in front of top AFL recruiters. Featuring former Hawthorn stars Ben Dixon and Robbie Campbell, the free ‘Rookie Me’ event is set to be held during the school holidays on Wednesday 30 September, at Boronia K-12 College. Male and female footballers over the age of 10 are invited to take up the chance to uncover their athletic abilities and strengths. AFL National Talent manager Kevin Sheehan said the session helped young footballers under-

stand the drafting process. “Each year, about 120 players get through into the AFL,” he said. “It’s about finding out what your strength and development needs are as young footballers.” Event testing includes height, weight, agility, beep test, standing vertical jump and running vertical jump. Attendees receive a 12-month subscription to an online athletic training tool. Four sessions are available for the free event, beginning at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Register your interest at www.rookieme.com.

Key measurements such as the beep test help identify strengths and weaknesses.

WITH the wet weather gods on sabbatical at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, members found the course in great condition then proceeded, with a few exceptions, to play some hideous golf. Not so for Mark Starick (12) as he wandered in with the casually smug walk of a winner with 41 stableford points to head the leader board and the A Grade list as well. John Keys (26) faced the ignominy of the previous week’s diabolical round to win B Grade with 37 points to hit the money for the first time. Of the rest, it was left to Steve Town (13) to show the way with 40 points while the rabble prefer that I not go any further down the list. Ben Balfour was nearest the pin on the 4th, Jeffrey Marsh the 7th, John Fisher the 12th, Keys was nearest af-

ter two shots on the 17th and Town slipped the pro pin pennies into his pocket on the 18th. Joanne Carvill showed all the other ladies a thing or two to win in a canter from a disappointing field. Wednesday’s Officially Foppish Golf (OFG) was a stableford event. When the bean counters had unleashed their abaci it emerged that there was a two-way tie. Both Graeme Fergus (22) and John Piggott (21) came in with 38 points. They were followed in by Gerran Wright 37 and a gaggle of golfers including Leigh Morison (16), Bobby Kennedy (18) and Ian Scott (28) all on 36 points. Next Saturday is a two-man ambrose event, with members searching with forlorn looks on their kissers for players in consistent form.

Bloods vie for glor y By JUDY ORREN DIVISION 1 SENIORS Healesville 13.13 (91) d Olinda Ferny Creek 7.12 (54) (Preliminary Final) HEALESVILLE will play off in the grand final against Wandin next week and will go into the game with plenty of confidence after a very commanding 37-point victory over Olinda in the Preliminary. Healesville led at every change of this clash and even though they never really dominated, they were always on top throughout the game. Healesville led by just one goal at the first change, and increased that to 15 points by half-time, but it was the third term that saw Healesville kick away. They got right on top defensively and held Olinda to just two behinds while they added 3.3 to jump out to a 34-point lead at the final change. The last quarter was an even enough battle, and Olinda did fight it out but Healesville still had the edge with a 4 goal to 3 term to win well and move into the grand final. Healesville best players: D. Anderson, C. Adams, P. Fermanis (1 goal) Olinda Ferny Creek best players: D. Rohrmann (1 goal), S. Horner (1 goal), J. Wallis

DIVISION 1 RESERVES Mount Evelyn 12.8 (80) d Wandin 7.9 (51) (preliminary final) THIS game was a beauty for three quarters with neither side able to break away. Wandin led by just three points at quarter time with both sides only managing 1 goal apiece. The second term was a little more free flowing as goals started to come with Mount Evelyn having the slight edge, booting 4 goals to 3 to take a three-point lead into the main break. The third term was another tough hit out with both sides scoring two goals which gave Mount Evelyn a one-goal lead at the final break. Mount Evelyn played a fast running brand of football in the last term and finished strong as they slammed home 5 last quarter goals to 1 to pull away late and record a very impressive 29-point win. They will now take on Upwey in the grand final for the ultimate glory. Mount Evelyn best players: D. Broadway (1 goal), D. Cope (2 goals), J. Arthur (2 goal) Wandin best players: J. Ladner, M. O’Donohue, M. Shanks

DIVISION 2 RESERVES Yarra Junction 6.5 (41) d Emerald 4.6 (30) (grand final) YARRA Junction played Emerald in the 2nd Semi Final two weeks ago and went down by 23 points, but bounced back to pull off the most important victory to become 2015 Premiers. This game was a low-scoring affair, with neither team able to string goals together to get any sort of decent break. The first quarter was about the only quarter that saw a little bit of open play

with Yarra Junction booting 3.3 (21) to 2.1(13) to take the early lead. The second and third quarter were both torrid slogs with both teams only adding two goals to their total which saw Yarra Junction leading by just one goal at the final change. The last term was more of the same as scoring was almost impossible, but it was Yarra Junction that broke through to kick the only major of the term which was enough for them to hold on and win by 10 points and celebrate premiership victory. Yarra Junction best players: A. Ward (Winner of the ‘Best on Ground’ medal), B. Charman, C. Hoare Emerald best players: M. Steer, W. Ladner, N. Williams

Upwey Tecoma best players: B. Oates (1 goal), A. Milner, S. Shineberg.

Healesville 12.16 (88) d Olinda Ferny Creek 5.8 (38) (preliminary final) HEALESVILLE started well with a 4 goal to 1 opening term to open up a handy 21-point lead at the first change, but Olinda switched on in the second term and hit back booting 3 goals to 1 to trail by just 8 points at half-time. Healesville really did have control in the third term as they held Olinda scoreless, but they were a bit wasteful as they booted 3.7 for the term, but it was still a handy 33-point lead to Healesville at three-quarter time. Healesville remained in control in the final term as they booted 4 goals to 1 to come away with a comfortable win and will go into next week’s grand final against Wandin in fine form.

UNDER 18s Wandin 10.11 (71) d Upwey Tecoma 6.14 (50) (preliminary final) WANDIN has had a great finals series, and it continues as they have advanced to the grand final after a great win over Upwey. Wandin was held goalless in the first term and could only manage four behinds but Upwey only slotted 1.4 to lead by just one goal at the first change. Wandin went hard at every contest in the second term and won the contested battles around the ground, which showed on the scoreboard as they booted 4 goals to 1 to lead by 11 points at the main break. The third quarter did see Upwey start to win more of the ball but they wasted their chances, kicking 2.6 to Wandin 2 straight, which gave Wandin a onegoal lead going into the final quarter. Wandin finished the day looking the fresher as their running game came to the fore. They finished the day booting 4 goals to 2 to win by 21 points, and will now take on Healesville in the grand final next week.

DIVISION 1 A GRADE NETBALL Wandin 34 d Yarra Glen 21 (preliminary final) WANDIN was dominant early in this game as they defended superbly, holding Yarra Glen to just three goals in the first half while they slotted 19 to have a commanding 16-goal lead at half-time. To Yarra Glen’s credit, they did fight the game out in the second half and, in fact, outscored Wandin but they just couldn’t make too much of a dint into Wandin’s lead to be of any real threat. Yarra Glen scored 18 second-half goals to 15, but it was Wandin’s dominance early that set up their victory and they’ll go into next week’s grand final against Olinda feeling pretty good about their form.

Wandin best players: M. Sandfort, D. Alexander, J. James.

Wandin best players: Tayissa Coppinger, Gabrielle Sinclair (22 goals), Ella Priestley

Sam Turner of Healesville flies for a strong mark.

Healesville best players: L. Oliver (1 goal), R. Howard-Scales, S. Fisher (4 goals) Olinda Ferny Creek best players: B. Watson, B. Currie, L. Taylor

Yarra Glen best players: Nicole Moate, Peta Fay, Alana Stone

Measure of men on field of sport From Page 1 The Dompietro boys - Mat and Michael, Casey Thomsen, John MacKay, Luke McKenna, Brent Moloney, and young Jai Kruithof ... they’re just a few of a long list of Bombers players who selflessly played their roles. Fittingly, this truly was a whole team effort. Bailey Robinson, Tim Arnott and Jaedin Poecher were the Lakers’ biggest contributors but a host of their big-name stars were kept quiet by a Bombers side that - right from the start of the year, its first back at their Chandler Reserve home earned its premiership. “This has been an emotional rollercoaster - it’s been a long, hard year,” said Bombers president Bruce Rush after the game. “It’s been an emotional ride for a

lot of people, so it’s good to be able to reward them. “I’m the most proud of the way we stuck together during the hard times - I was proud of the way our people behaved and were a support to each other, but also the way in which they stayed focused on this end game which they had to do.” Livermore said his biggest overriding feeling after the win was, simply, relief. “We knew at half-time they’d have the wind in the third quarter and if we could peg level with them then we’d be right and it’d set ourselves for a big last quarter,” he said. “Credit to Kinglake - they played really hard in that third quarter. It was really physical, but with our leg speed and the games they’d played it was pretty hard for them to get up.”

Livermore still marveled at the inner strength of his club, and couldn’t help but smile when the topic of returning to first division was brought up. “I think the club has been so solid since that tragic accident occurred. It’s almost created this special bond between everyone,” he said. “You hear these stories in the news about footy clubs losing lives in car accidents but you think it’ll never happen to your club. When it does, you’ve got no idea how it much it rocks not only the footy club but the whole community. “The way the club got around each other, and the support we all got from the community was just outstanding. “I think that’s why you play footy - it’s the sport you play for,

but it’s the company you enjoy the most. It’s really special. We’re lucky to have a club like this - you could almost call it a family.” As for next year - the Bombers are hell-bent on making sure their stay in Division 1 isn’t a short-term one. “There’s a lot of good things on the horizon for this footy club and I can guarantee you that these boys will be very competitive in Division 1 next year - they won’t be easybeats,” Bek said. “Look, it’s not important if other people don’t think we can match it in Division 1. “What’s important is that we think we can. We’re not coming up next year to make up the numbers. We’re coming up to be fair dinkum and have a crack.”
