dumpers could then be prosecuted under the Environmental Protection Act for a maximum penalty of $6066. Dumping asbestos also carried fines of “thousands of dollars”, she said. She urged anyone who witnesses any suspicious behaviour to contact the DELWP Powelltown office on 5965 9901, and for residents to use the tip when having a spring clean-out. The Yarra Ranges Council, in a recent officer’s report on the Healesville Waste Transfer Station, cited higher tip fees as a result of the EPA’s Landfill Levy.

sons why we’ve had an increase in rubbish dumping. “The Shire (Yarra Ranges Council) has contracted that out independently, so it’s not a shire problem - (but) people just won’t pay the price.” But the price careless dumpers pay could be heftier prices than those at the tip - Ms Harte said every piece of rubbish collected would be investigated, and anyone identified could expect to be prosecuted. In a July DELWP release, Ms Harte said littering and dumping in the forest carried a fine of $303 on-the-spot, and

contractors, the Mail and DELWP representatives saw other dumped material, including deck chairs and a vehicle engine. The site of the dumping was little more than one kilometre along the road from the Wesburn Waste Transfer Station. The Mail asked Ms Harte whether tip prices, frequently cited by residents as being too expensive, were a factor in the increase of dumping. “Well, definitely,” she said. “Obviously, that’s one of the rea-

IF YOU go out in the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise - perhaps even two truckloads worth of it. Thousands of taxpayers’ dollars were spent collecting rubbish on Friday 11 September, after two truckloads of it was dumped down an embankment. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) spent $3000 hiring five contractors to abseil off of the side of Old Warburton Road in Wesburn and collect rubbish. A mattress, a couch and about 30 tyres - including a large, tractor-size tyre - were all dumped down the embankment recently, according to DELWP forest and fire officer Joy Harte. Ms Harte said DELWP officers were not trained to abseil down the steep hillside, with a gradient of roughly 45 degrees, meaning that taxpayer money had to be spent on hiring contractors to do the work. One of these contractors, Duncan Hughes-Gage, said it would take the five staff members 10 hours to haul up all of the rubbish, which was scattered down the hill and into the Yankee Jims Creek. Ms Harte said the dumping was the latest in a “spate” of rubbish dumping in the Yarra State Forest, and that DELWP officers had been running a blitz to clean as much up as possible. “We’ve had a spate of rubbish dumping ... and it’s got considerably worse,” she said. “We’ve had a blitz right across the forest - we’ve recently picked up 10 lots of asbestos, and we had to get an asbestos contractor out, which cost $8000.” She said much of the dumping appeared to be carried out by small business contactors, who dump waste rather than paying tip fees, along with families moving house. Another concern was hunters dumping animal carcasses in the for-

Library trial wins over council YARRA Ranges’ new and expanded mobile library service has been given the permanent go-ahead, after a successful sixmonth trial. Following an extensive review of library services, council announced it would trial a new flexi-service van to replace the ageing B-double library truck. The new van is able to bring more books to the community while also being flexible enough to deliver a greater range of programs to a wider audience. The 2014 review showed the old library truck, which had been in service for 30 years, no longer met community needs. Older residents and people with a disability were unable to physically access it and it was

costly to run. The new flexi vehicle has no steps, making it more accessible and offers books, magazines and DVDs. It can also visit places the larger truck could not access. The flexi vehicle visits designated locations regularly, but can also attend festivals and events throughout each year as part of council’s mobile library service. Since the trial began in January, the flexi vehicle has visited various regular locations around the Yarra Ranges. Following the success of the trial period, the expanded flexi service will continue to visit Kirkbrae aged care facility in Kilsyth, Walmsley Village

in Kilsyth, Millgrove, Seville, Warburton and Woori Yallock. However, it will no longer visit Mount Dandenong due to low visitation rates and the limited number of suitable locations that have shelter nearby to protect users from the weather. The new library service will provide significant ongoing savings which council will reinvest in improving technology at existing libraries, including paying for the increasingly popular wi-fi at branches. Other future technological changes that council could invest in includes trialling ereaders, ipads and laptop loans, upgrading technology in preparation for the NBN roll-out and expanding the digital literacy program in the Yarra Valley.

MP in the hot seat By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS STATE MP for Eildon Cindy McLeish participated in the annual Principal for a Day event at Launching Place Primary School last week. Principal for a Day is managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and allows local community leaders to gain a handson understanding of schools. Ms McLeish spent the day ‘shadowing’ Launching Place Primary School Principal Narelle Messerle and learning about how the school functioned and what the core aspects of the curriculum were. “It’s great to have Cindy here learning more about the school,” Ms Messerle said. Ms McLeish had experiences throughout the day including speaking with the students and staff, helping out in classes and getting to know how the school operated. “I got to see processes in action and helped out in Grade 1/2 class which had a really strong writing focus,” she said. Ms McLeish and Ms Messerle even sat down with some of the students to discuss what they did and did not like about their school, which led to many suggestions for the installation of a waterslide in the playground. Ms McLeish said she was very impressed with Ms Messerle’s dedication to the continu-

ing improvement of student and staff engagement in the learning process. “There is a real learning tone in the classrooms,” she said. Ms Messerle introduced Ms McLeish to the ongoing professional development of the teachers at Launching Place Primary School that has contributed to an improvement in student engagement. “There is a focus here on how teachers teach sustainable change,” Ms Messerle said. “We aim to keep staff challenged and prevent stagnation in the curriculum by building teacher professionalism.” “We do this by having a focus on writing and language that incorporates professional development to engage staff and students in the classroom.” Ms McLeish said her time at Launching Place Primary School was very valuable and she had a great time getting to know the people that made up the school community. “There were a few really great highlights for me,” Ms McLeish said. “A Grade 4/5 class sang a song for their teacher about not having done their homework that was really funny.” “Also seeing the Grade 5/6 girls aerobics routine that they took to the national championships was absolutely amazing.“

POLICE are appealing for witnesses, after a battery and fuel were stolen from the Yarra Valley Railway last week. Between Monday 7 and Friday 11 September, unknown persons are believed to have cut padlocks to a paddock on Tarrawarra Road in Yarra Glen, near the Tarrawarra railway station. Leading Senior Constable Tim Stewart said a battery and diesel fuel were stolen from a backhoe on the property, worth about $300. “We were given 140 trees and we managed to plant most of those,” Ms Snowden said. The school also assessed their levels of waste and conducted a waste audit with the support of an environmental officer from the Yarra Ranges Shire. Ms Snowden said the waste au-

A MAN is expected to face charges after attempting to steal four segways from Rochford Winery in August - only to get bogged on the way out. At 5.30pm on Sunday 16 August, a man is believed to have stolen the vehicles, valued at $30,000, from a shed at the Coldstream winery. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said the burglary was bungled when the vehicle used for the robbery became bogged on the way out. “Subsequently, we identified an offender, and that person has been interviewed and a brief of evidence is being prepared,” he said. Det Sgt Barrow said no charges have yet been laid against the man, a 29-year-old of no fixed place of abode. The segways were recovered from the car.

Secondary college vandalised POLICE are searching for witnesses after a group of people broke into the Upper Yarra Secondary College campus last weekend. At 8.30pm on Saturday 5 September, police believe a group of men and women entered the Little Yarra Road campus in Yarra Junction and sprayed graffiti on the exterior of some of the buildings. “They then broke in via the roof and caused damage inside,” Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said. Nothing was reported stolen in the incident.

Primary green thumbs sprout out MILLWARRA Primary School in Millgrove participated in Environment Week by organising green thumb activities around the school. The aim of Environment Week is to teach students how they can support and care for the environment at a personal level. They achieved this through activities like weeding, mulching, pruning, and planting as well as having lights and heaters off inside the building to reduce CO2 production. The activities were designed so students could gain landcare and environmental responsibility skills they can take home and apply to other areas of their lives. Cool Australia also provided the school with figures to calculate how much CO2 the trees in the school grounds absorbed. Teacher at Millwarra and organiser for the day Trish Snowden said the day was a great success.

In brief

dit was a highlight of the day as the school was already meeting some great standards of waste management. “She was really impressed with how little landfill our school produced and how much composting we do,” Ms Snowden said. Not only did the students at the school get a chance to plant and care for plants, but they had a chance to do some garden design as well. “We had two loads of mulch delivered with everything else, and the children planned and built a path.” “It was already a passage they used previously to run through the garden, so we thought why not turn that into an actual path,” Ms Snowden said. Ms Snowden and the Millwarra Primary School community would like to thank the shire of Yarra Ranges, Yarra Valley ECOSS and all the members of the community that made the day possible.

Tarrawarra tunnel tagged HEALESVILLE police are searching for information after the Tarrawarra tunnel along the Yarra Valley Railway line was graffitied last week. Between Sunday 6 September and Sunday 13 September, unknown persons are believed to have sprayed graffiti on the inside of the tunnel along the railway line. Healesville police Leading Senior Constable Wayne Phillips said the graffiti was found on Sunday, and had yet to be removed. He said police believed the vandals walked along the railway line to the tunnel, to spray the graffiti.

Man faces multiple charges A CROYDON man will face court later this month, after a breaking into a council compound in Lilydale by driving through the gates. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said between 5pm on Monday 7 September and 6.20am the next morning, the 28-year-old man was believed to had broken into an Industrial Park Drive address in Lilydale. “Offenders broke into shipping containers and several vehicles,” Det Sgt Barrow said. Shortly after the break-in, Det Sgt Barrow said the man stole an Isuzu tip truck and crashed it through the boom gates at a Yarra Ranges Council compound in Nelson Road, Lilydale. The Croydon man was arrested nearby, and police have charged him with theft of a motor car and going equipped to steal, among other offences.

Hydration essential A TYPICAL adult will have about 45 litres of water in their body, distributed in muscle, fat tissue, bones and teeth. Water has multiple functions in the body and is vital in key metabolic functions. Commonly, though, many people may be poorly hydrated, which can affect their health and well-being. Many health complaints may be stubborn to improve if hydration is low and critical functions such as wound healing and immunity may be compromised. Being well-hydrated will benefit your digestion, allow your brain to think faster and help your skin glow

So, how much should you be drinking? In warm months, and for adults who do moderate exercise, then between two to three litres per day may suffice. Children, depending on age and activity levels, need between a quarter to three-quarters of adult portions. It is also worth considering that excess hydration can occur and lead to depletion of minerals in the body. If you have been suffering poor hydration, then it may benefit asking your health provider about mineral repletion which can help you rehydrate your body quickly.

Support after crash

Four years’ jail over beating

By JESSE GRAHAM

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS

IN THE aftermath of an horrific car crash 10 months ago, Pam Krstic says the Healesville community has come out in support of her and her husband, as he continues on a long road to recovery. But Ms Krstic said the pair will have to say their goodbyes to the town soon enough, as they search for a house better suited to her partner’s recovery. Ray Krstic was involved in a serious head-on crash in Lilydale, after losing control on a wet and oily road, on Sunday, 7 December, 2014. Ms Krstic said her husband was heading to the third and final day of a golf tournament, where he was first on the leader board, when the crash occurred - he lost control and drove into the path of an oncoming four-wheel-drive. Though the other car’s occupants came away with injuries of their own, Ray ended up in the Royal Melbourne Hospital with his back broken in two places, broken ribs and a broken pelvis, among other injuries. As his neck was shaken sideways, Ray’s arteries stretched, which Ms Krstic said resulted in strokes on both sides of his brainstem, leaving him locked in and unable to move - except for blinking. Since then, Ray has been making a slow recovery, and now has use of his right hand and right leg, with movement in his left leg improving. Ms Krstic said he was currently undergoing rehab at St Vincent’s Community Rehabilitation Centre.

A WOMAN who organised for a Warburton man to be brutally beaten has been jailed for four years with a non-parole period of two years and three months. Sharee Hastings was sentenced in the Victorian Supreme Court on 26 August after having Barrie Robinson of Warburton severely beaten by her daughter’s partner, Karl Ravenhorst, and a friend. Hastings had been living next door to Mr Robinson since 2013 and had helped with the rehabilitation of Mr Robinson’s ex-partner Debbie Smith after a serious car accident. It was during this time Hastings incurred a $4000 debt to Mr Robinson and had the use of his car. After Ms Smith moved interstate, tension grew between Hastings and Mr Robinson, resulting in Mr Robinson requesting Hastings pay her debt and return his car. It was in early 2014 that Hastings made contact with Ravenhorst and concocted a plan to have Mr Robinson beaten. Hastings had told Ravenhorst that Mr Robinson had held her captive at this home and raped her repeatedly, an allegation Judge Forrest called “totally false” during sentencing. Hastings, Ravenhorst, Hastings’ daughter and a friend of Ravenhorst lured Mr Robinson to a secluded location in Yellingbo under the pretence that his car had broken down. Mr Robinson was then beaten by Ravenhorst and his friend with a baseball bat at Hastings' request, leaving Mr Robinson with severe injuries to his skull and brain. Mr Robinson suffered fractures to the left and front of his skull, bruising and swelling on his brain, and fragments of bone embedded in his brain that resulted in significant neurological problems. But for Hastings pleading guilty she would have received a prison sentence of five years with a nonparole period of three years and three months. She was found guilty of recklessly causing injury and being involved in a joint criminal enterprise. Ravenhorst was found guilty of intentionally causing serious injury and sentenced to five years in prison with a non-parole period of three years and three months.

Tedders

Pam Krstic, with a picture of her husband Ray, who is recovering from a serious car crash. 144165 Picture: ROB CAREW “He’s feeling very lucky to be alive, but it’s very difficult for him, because he can’t speak," she said. Ms Krstic said there had been an “amazing” response from the community, especially from the Healesville Soccer Club, whose members organised a fund-raiser on 28 August at the Don Road Sporting Complex. As a result of the evening, $10,300 was raised for the couple,

which Ms Krstic said would be used to help them relocate to a house better equipped for his recovery in coming years. “It’s just incredible - there are no words to describe how you feel when you’re supported like that,” she said. “We realise that we are incredibly lucky in a small community like Healesville - that’s one of the benefits you get.

Rakes

“It’s really sad, but at the moment, we can’t live in Healesville, because it’s just too hard for transport - our house isn’t suitable for a wheelchair, so we have to sell it and find another place,” she said. Ms Krstic said she wanted to thank everyone who had supported Ray in some way, whether through visits to the hospital, in organising the fundraiser, and anyone who had rallied around the couple since the crash.

To make sure your vehicle continues to run at it’s best, it’s essential to keep your scheduled service up-to-date.

Got the mail? CANADA Post is embracing a great idea for reduced delivery costs: with one centralised neighbourhood letterbox where a resident walks up to collect their letters and utility bills. This practical proposal also generates healthy exercise and less obesity in citizens. At Yarra Glen, a small rural village, and in Healesville, a regional town, many district people already gather their private mail from a box at a licensed post office. A complimentary box and key for every resident who has a mortgage or rental lease would

solidify this concept in each community. A Yarra Glen Shipping Co-operative could also create jobs on the empty shopping centre rooftop inside recently vacated premises previously occupied by the regional marketing group. A global distribution centre could be established for all incoming parcels and outgoing vineyard exports sent and received from overseas via the local airport. It is time to start marketing a genuine valleygrown and processed iconic Yarra Glen brand. Noel Buchanan, Yarra Glen.

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian, 14 September 1935 Healesville Going Ahead HEALESVILLE as a shopping centre is making great progress. It is now possible to purchase almost every requirement at any prices. A long-felt want has been filled by Williamson’s progressive store, where a furniture department has been added, catering for all modern furnishing requirements at city prices, cash or terms, freight free. All business transactions are confidential. Healesville Scouts’ Dance A very enjoyable euchre party and dance was held in the Memorial Hall last Friday night by the group committee of the 1st Healesville Boy Scouts. A feature of the evening was the Scouts quadrille, in which three complete sets of Scouts and partners took the floor. The training of these sets was undertaken by ladies of the committee and the excellent performance proved that their efforts were appreciated. The boys were arranged in a semi-circle behind the orchestra. Healesville Horsemen’s Club THE next outing of the Healesville Horsemen’s Club will be a one-day ride to Yarra Glen and Dixon’s Creek. The trail ride to follow will be Narbethong via Fernshaw, Morley’s Track, Mt Dom Dom, the new Spur road, returning via the main Narbethong-Healesville Road. A junior section of the club is to be formed, the objects being to educate young equestrians to the proper care and handling of horses. A senior member will take them on short trails and

impart general instruction. Miss Beryl Lawrence has been elected leader of the ladies’ troupe with Miss Hilda Tullo, assistant. THE first step of the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC)’s review into the Yarra Ranges Council has finished, with a preliminary report set to be released at the end of the month. The review, which occurs for councils every three election cycles, aims to ensure fair representation for all voters, and assesses the number of councillors and wards, among other issues. The first round of public submissions closed on Wednesday 2 September, and the VEC has since published the 18 submissions it received on its website. Three of these submissions were made from individual Yarra Ranges Councillors - Jim Child, Jason Callanan and Mike Clarke - while another was made on behalf of the council as a whole. Councillors Child, Callanan and Clarke, and the council’s submissions all recommended that the nine wards, nine councillors make-up of the council remain the same, with some boundary changes for wards. These boundary changes, suggested by Cr Callanan and the council, include redefining

the Chandler Ward to take in the Monbulk Aquatics Centre and the whole of Wandin and for Streeton to expand slightly to have the Olinda Pool area, among other suggestions. With a submission from former councillor, Dianne Moore, five of the submissions asked for the ward and councillor make-up of the council to remain the same. Meanwhile, former-Lyster Ward councillor and Selby resident Samantha Dunn made a submission supporting a change to three w ards - one for the Yarra Valley region, one for the urban areas of Lilydale and its surrounds, and another for the Dandenong Ranges - with three councillors to be elected from each ward. Ms Dunn wrote that having three wards would join “communities of interest, and ensure representation if a councillor was on leave. Of the 18 submissions, half recommended a change to the three wards, nine councillors. Three of the submissions recommended that 11 councillors be elected for the Yarra Ranges, with two of these recommending 11 wards and the other recommending larger,

multi-councillor wards. The last submission contained detailed diagrams on how the electoral make-up of not only the Yarra Ranges, but the state as a whole, could be made up - including each village electing a leader, and these leaders then electing a mayor. The submission’s diagram featured 10 wards. Cr Child wrote in his submission that the current wards are “unique in their own right, and that councillors have a “very strong knowledge of their areas and communities. “I content that a multi-councillor ward combining the Ryrie and O’Shannassy wards would group together towns that have few common interests, such as Healesville and Warburton, he wrote. The VEC is expected to release its preliminary report on the review on Wednesday 30 September - residents will then have until 5pm on 28 October to make further submissions. By 25 November, the final report will be released, and any changes will take place for the council’s October 2016 election. To view the submissions, visit vec.vic.gov.au.

“It’s great to get the message out there. Mr Murphy’s ultimate aim is for the clip to be re-created, word for word, among other football/netball leagues. So far, AFL Tasmania has already inquired about doing the same. “That alone has made it worthwhile, he said. The clip can be viewed on the Mail’s facebook page, www.Facebook.com/ MailNewsGroup, or at mail. starcommunity.com.au.

Initially, they hoped it would receive about 1000 views, but those expectations were quickly exceeded. As of today, the clip has enjoyed almost 87,000 views. Mr Murphy hoped the clip will leave an impression. “I believe education is the key, he said. “This is a great target audience because football clubs span such a range of ages. “A president is usually in their sixties, but there are also junior players and under 18s.

WA R B U R T O N - M I L L GROVE footballer and father, Brendon Murphy, is leading the charge in the region to raise awareness of domestic violence. After co-ordinating a short-film clip on the issue, which includes key messages from local footballers, his efforts have received huge support through social media. His story has also featured on ABC television. The project has received full support from the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League, which is encouraging the public to share the video with the hashtag #heroesforzeroes. Mr Murphy said he felt compelled to raise awareness. “I was watching a program about a woman who had been killed in a domestic violence incident, he said. “I was sitting there with my one-year-old daughter and I became emotional. “It played on my mind for a while, so I decided to do something about it. Mr Murphy called on the help of two friends, who are both involved with television and film-making. With their assistance, the trio wrote, shot and edited the one-minute clip, which features eight clubs and nine players.

Reprieve for memorials PERMANENT roadside memorials for road trauma victims may be allowed under VicRoads’ new policy, after the organisation finalised its review earlier this month. On Friday 11 September, VicRoads announced it was introducing its updated Roadside Memorial Policy, following a review that began in March. Using an online ‘consultation hub’, residents around Victoria were invited to have their say about what they would like to see change - or stay the same - with roadside memorials. VicRoads director of Network Policy and Standards Helen Linder said the wishes and needs of families involved in road trauma incidents were “a key consideration”. “This policy ensures that we have the framework to support families who wish to place or maintain a memorial, while also being mindful of road safety and community views,” she said. The new policy states that “where a roadside memorial aligns with all other policy principles and is not causing concern within a community, the memorial may remain”, and outlines a timeline for a “transitional approach”. In the first two months, the memorial may have limited restrictions, while in the 2-15 month period, memorials may be modified or relocated, to be “discreet”. After 15 months, the policy said, memorials might be transitioned to a long-term memorial outside of the road reserve, though VicRoads would consider plaques on a caseby-case basis. Memorials, however, are not to be placed on traffic islands, median strips, roundabouts, close to intersections, traffic signals or curves, near the edge of road seals or on any road infrastructure, such as light poles or signs. “Roadside memorials are to be located such that visitors are able to safely access the memorial, and be safe during their time there,” the policy reads. “Safe parking locations are

a key consideration.” VicRoads recommends that memorial makers include contact details, in case the memorial needs to be altered or moved, such as a nonidentifying email address or PO box. Memorials are also to be made of materials and placed so that they would not be dangerous if involved in a crash, though crosses and “personalised” objects are permitted, as long as they fit VicRoads’ guidelines. Flowers can be used in memorials, but VicRoads said it “discourages” plastic and other materials that may be dangerous to wildlife or become litter. The policy states that, if a memorial has been erected by someone other than a family member and the family is opposed to the memorial, VicRoads will “endeavour” to contact the maker to remove the memorial, or place a Notice of Intent to remove the memorial, before taking it down. Ms Linder said the new policy would only be used “where a conflict or a safety concern was raised”. VicRoads said it would not remove current memorials under the new policy, meaning memorials in place around the Yarra Valley are expected to remain as they are - so long as they fit the guidelines. The policy was officially approved by VicRoads executive director of Policy and Programs on 21 August, and is now in place. Though 4467 people visited VicRoads consultation hub during the 29 March - 26 April consultation period, only 326 of these people contributed comments and 231 actively joined discussion forums. The Mail contacted VicRoads, and asked whether photographs of road trauma victims would be allowed on memorials, which was an issue of contention in the consultation process - but did not receive a response by deadline. To view the entire policy, visit vicroads.vic.gov.au. What do you think of the new policy? Do you, or someone you know, maintain a memorial for a loved one? Write a letter to the editor at editor@ mailnewsgroup.com.au or 244 Maroondah Highway, Healesville.

Flowers will be able to be used in roadside memorials - but plastics that can harm wildlife will be discouraged. 137863 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY

Festival on the rise By JESSE GRAHAM THE best of the region will be on display at a new festival premiering at the Cox Plate Race Day in Yarra Glen with a free night-time event. The inaugural Yarra Valley Balloon Festival (YVBF) will begin on Saturday 24 October at the Yarra Valley Racecourse in Yarra Glen with 12 hot air balloons taking to the sky as part of a night-time display. After the day’s Cox Plate event, visitors will be allowed into the grounds for free from 5pm to witness a night glow from the balloons, followed by a 10 minute firework display. The festival will run through until 9.30pm with a cocktail party, skydiving displays, lanterns for children and demonstration from Yarra Glen CFA among other attractions. On the Sunday morning, those booked in will be able to go for morning balloon flights, while visitors can pay a gold coin to go on a short, tethered balloon ride above the racecourse. A social media photo competition will then be held, with the poster of the best photo from the morning posted on Instagram with the hashtag #YVBF15 receiving $500 in cash. YVR chief executive Brett Shambrook said he was looking forward to the event, which he said will be a chance to showcase the region’s offerings to tourists and residents.

“I think people don’t come now to the Yarra Valley to do one set thing,” he said. “They’re not coming just to go to a winery, they’re coming and calling in at the chocolate factory, they’re going to the (Healesville) Sanctuary. “We’re trying to showcase everything the region has to offer.” Mr Shambrook said he wanted the event to be embraced by the community and to become an annual attraction, likening it to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, which features more than 600 balloons over 10 days, drawing in more than 100,000 visitors. “We’re really keen to see the Balloon Festival kick off - it needs to start somewhere,” he said. “Looking long term, I imagine that the Yarra Valley Balloon Festival would be a bigger event over a longer period of time. “Albuquerque started with 10 or 12 balloons, now over 600 balloons participate.” The Cox Plate Race Day event begins at 11am on Saturday 24 October, with the YVBF to begin from 5pm. The YVBF is being run with the support of Yarra Ranges Tourism, Country Racing Victoria, the Yarra Ranges Council, the Balloon Association of Victoria and the Victorian Government.

Classics hit the stage By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS

Claire Bamford, Allison Alexander, Rain Jones and Susan Casey of Catprint Theatre Group. 144036 Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS

Moments in time captured

WARBURTON-BASED theatre group Catprint will be putting on the largest performance of their history next month. The production has been in the works since February, and all their hard work will come together in two single act plays. It has taken 10 working bees by the cast and crew to have all elements of the production ready to go for opening night Friday 9 October. A mammoth 10-panel backdrop made by the crew and hand painted by director Claire Bamford is also included. “There has been lots of skill sharing and a huge commitment from everyone,” Ms Bamford said. “We have a great group and a lot of fun.” Catprint is a theatre production group set up by Ms Bamford and first time director Rain Jones. In its fourth year, Catprint came about to fulfil a need for an adult non-music based theatre group for dramatic plays in the Upper Yarra Valley.

“There was nothing like this in Upper Yarra,” Ms Bamford said. While there are other adult dramatic theatre groups in the Yarra Ranges, the other groups in the Warburton area are mostly musical based. “Rather than drive to be part of other groups, we set up our own group,” Ms Bamford said. Catprint is presenting their ‘Theatre Classics’ production of Agatha Christie’s ‘The Patient’ and Eugene Ionesco’s ‘The Chairs.’ There will be a complimentary supper served between the plays and all ticket sales go towards Catprint’s next productions. Ms Bamford said Catprint is always looking for more members across all roles including actors, directors, producers, and so on. Theatre Classics opens at the Arts Centre in Warburton on Friday 9 October at 7.30pm with shows continuing through the weekend. Advance tickets are available for $17.50 if purchased before Friday 9 October or can be purchased at the door $22.50.

AWE-INSPIRING art from a world-renowned artist has filled the halls of TarraWarra Museum of Art for his first major exhibition on Australian soil. French artist Pierre Huyghe will have his works adorning the walls of TWMA until 22 November, as part of the museum’s second biennial TarraWarra International. The exhibition features works never before displayed in the country, and opened on Saturday 29 August. TWMA director Victoria Lynn and co-curator Amelia Barikin took the Mail on a tour of the exhibition the day before the opening, to explain the pieces and the artist’s unique approach to art. Ms Lynn said that, though the pieces feature from years throughout Huyghe’s career, they are all linked on the themes of time and temporality. Pieces in the exhibition vary wildly in their format - visitors will walk into the museum hall and look up to see RSI, un bout de reel, neon circles inspired by the work of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan on the roof. Nearby, live spiders and ants will be traversing the walls - the first time live creatures have been used at the museum. Ms Lynn quickly pointed out that the spiders are Daddy Long-Legs, and are based high off of the museum floor, for those who are arachnophobic. She adds that none of the insects have been harmed in the making of the exhibition, and explains Huyghe’s design of the installation. “Part of the reason that Pierre works with insects is that they are pushing the boundaries of the museum,” Ms Lynn said. “They’re not going to necessarily behave according to our rules of an on-and-off-schedule.” “It’s like, ‘It’s 9 o’clock and I’m going to see the painting’, but the ants might not be there then,” Ms Barikin adds. But the most breathtaking moments in the exhibition are the videos scattered throughout the museum, depicting live insects, another trapped within 30 million-year-old amber, and an expedition to the Antarctic to see an albino penguin. To see the Pierre Huyghe exhibition, visit TarraWarra Museum of Art at 311 Healesville-Yarra Glen Road, Healesville, from 11am-5pm Tuesday-Sunday. For more information, visit www.twma.com. au or call 5957 3100. Ms Barikin is also the author of Parallel Presents: The Art of Pierre Huyghe.

A stoned cold killer By SETH HYNES American Ultra (MA15+) Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Topher Grace, Connie Britton

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON

MELBOURNE’S BEST MOVIE PRICES

Sponsored by Croydon Cinemas

AMERICAN Ultra is an offbeat action comedy with surprising heart. Absent-minded stoner Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) discovers that he’s actually an elite CIA sleeper agent, and has been targeted for termination. American Ultra is funny and viscerally exciting, but what stands out about it is its subtle flair with character dynamics.

Mike is a sensitive, apprehensive guy prone to panic attacks, but unleashes deadly, subconscious combat training when threatened. He gradually develops into a better, more confident person by merging the best parts of both sides of himself. It’s also gratifying to see a male-led action film that features strong female characters. Connie Britton plays Lassetter, a feisty, no-nonsense agent who goes out of her way to guide and protect Mike. And yes, Mike’s primary motivation is to rescue his girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart, who has finally shak-

en off the Twilight franchise), but Phoebe is an authoritative figure who can hold her own in a fight. Mike and Phoebe have a touching relationship of mutual dependency under fire, with a decent twist about Phoebe’s identity. Mad Max: Fury Road (starring Charlize Theron) takes the cake this year for pro-active, awesome female characters, but American Ultra still delivers admirably. American Ultra satisfies with its goofball humour and brutal, well-choreographed action, but its deep, engaging characters make it rather special.

NATIONAL Threatened Species Day was last week, and Healesville Sanctuary is celebrating another successful breeding season as well as increased survival rates for species released into the wild. The sanctuary, in conjunction with Melbourne Zoo, has been able to select a wide range of threatened and endangered species for release into the wild. Zoos Victoria have this year been able to release 18 helmeted honeyeaters, three critically endangered orange-bellied parrots, 38 southern corroboree frogs 109 northern corroboree frog eggs to boost wild populations. Healesville Sanctuary has also successfully bred six Tasmanian devil joeys and four Mountain Pygmy-possums with 96 Baw Baw frogs bred at Melbourne Zoo. One of the challenges faced by zoos in releasing captive bred animals back into wild populations is the low survival rate of captive bred animals. Healesville Sanctuary has implemented a new breeding program that prepares captive animals for release by teaching them about predator dangers and has keepers use a less active approach to raising the animals. “We’ve been refining our predator-awareness training program for helmeted honeyeaters,” Healesville Sanctuary’s director Glen Holland said in a written statement.

“With these changes, we’re teaching the birds about the danger of hawks and other birds of prey to reduce their vulnerability to predation.” This program has bought the survival rate of the helmeted honey eaters released into the wild up from 45 per cent to 90 per cent survival rate over two years. This strategy has also been used with the raising of the Tasmanian devils at the sanctuary to give them a more authentic natural start in life. “We don’t want these animals to become domesticated,” Healesville Sanctuary Threatened Species keeper Bronwyn McCulloch said. Healesville Sanctuary works with partners such as the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Mount Rothwell Biodiversity and Interpretation Centre, Con-

By JESSE GRAHAM AN AWARD-winning firefighter has her sights on the Yarra Valley for the fire season, and is calling for volunteers to help care for animals on high fire risk days. Panton Hill firefighter, Jenna Kelly, is the organiser of the Walking Forward Disaster Relief Team, a team of volunteers who connect with animal owners and co-ordinate evacuations on high fire risk days. The Mail reported in January that the group would be run at a grassroots level, and connect people to share resources, whether it be horse floats, animal cages or transport. On high risk days, or ‘trigger days’ of agreed conditions, those connected through WFDRT can co-ordinate animal evacuations until any danger has passed. “If someone has an animal stuck on a property and can’t leave, we can have someone with a float pick them up,” Ms Kelley said earlier this year. She has since been awarded with the Institute of Public Administration of Australia’s Faces of our Public Sector Award, which recognises the work of exemplary public sector employees or volunteers, for her work with WFDRT. Emergency Management Victoria’s Deputy Commissioner, Tony Murphy, complimented Ms Kelley on the award, saying

she “epitomises the vision of Victorian emergency management to build safer and more resilient communities.” Ms Kelley said the team was now trying to get more people signed up, particularly from the Yarra Valley and surrounds, before the fire season began. “We’ve got about 30 (volunteers), so we’re trying to get a lot of people to start thinking about the season at the moment, and to come on board so we’re ready to go,” she said. “The hardest thing is people aren’t thinking about these kind

of things when disasters aren’t happening - it’s a bit tricky with the community when it’s quiet.” The group also helps to co-ordinate first-aid and food donations, to help build better resilience in communities, as well as preparation through evacuations. WFDRT’s Facebook page, which has 1114 likes, regularly posts emergency updates and tips for residents Australiawide. For more information, or to sign up, visit www.facebook. com/WFDRT.

Webb of rally insight ASPIRING rally stars will have access to expert advice upon signing up for the Marysville-based Great Tarmac Rally next month. Event director Peter Washington has booked professional co-driver Bernie Webb to run a special introduction session at Marysville on Friday 2 October, the day before round three of the Australian Tarmac Rally Championship. Webb is the reigning champion and has been rallying at national level for nearly 20 years. He has competed with factory-backed teams and privateer crews, notching up multiple wins including outright victory in Targa, Tasmania. Along with driver/business partner, Steve Glenney, he produces Smoothline Stage Notes for every tarmac rally in Australia. “The introduction session will teach the rookies what to expect on the event, with a particular focus on ‘traps for young players’ as well as how to approach the competitive environment safely,” Webb said. “Part of Smoothline’s mission is to make tarmac rallying as accessible as possible. “When I first started in the sport, it was very difficult to tap into knowledge about how to go fast safely. to share some of his knowledge at our event,” Washington said. “Our touring category lets people put a toe in the water to try tarmac rallying, just using their regular road car with no modifications required.” This is the second time this year the

Measure of men match By RUSSELL BENNETT EMERALD senior coach Jason Bek said it best at Healesville on Saturday afternoon, just as his side was about to step out on to the ground and meet its fate against Kinglake. “It’s days like today that we get measured as men, and as footballers,” he told his group. “Don’t forget this message - today is all about character. Win, lose or draw we want no questions asked about our character as men and as footballers.” Rarely has a sporting club’s character been tested as much as the Emerald Football Netball Club’s has this season. When teenagers Sharn Walker, Jason Breakwell and Felisha Allen were killed when the car they were in crashed in Avonsleigh on 30 June, the club was rocked to its core. But through the darkness came a strength and resilience that had to be seen to be believed. It’s often said that sporting clubs are like extended families, but in Emerald’s case it’s true. In a time of unimaginable grief, everyone involved at the club rallied around the families of those lost, and each other. Talk about putting life, and sport, into context. But the Bombers, strengthened through the adversity, pushed on and - ultimately - a remarkable seven Emerald teams across senior and junior football and netball reached grand finals this season. Only one of those went on to claim the top prize, but that side was Jason Bek’s senior football team - earning the club its place back in Division 1 of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League with a convincing 54-point thumping of Kinglake - 11.14 (80) to 3.8 (26). One of Bek’s final messages to his men before

The Bombers stood as one to meet their fate. 144295

Emerald celebrates after gaining promotion back to Division 1 of the YVMDFL. 144295 they stood arm in arm for the national anthem prior to play was to play with passion, but also with composure. It would have been so easy for them to get caught up in the moment in front of a massive contingent of the Bomber faithful that converged on the Healesville Sporting Complex. They were there on Saturday to back their club to the hilt - first in the B Grade netball grand final against Yea (in which an incredibly gallant Bombers outfit went down by just a goal after coming back from a five-goal deficit); and then in the reserves football grand final - which Yarra Junction won by less than two straight kicks. The senior side could have felt insurmountable pressure to get the job done - after all, it entered the game as the raging-hot favourite against the Lakers. But instead, this incredibly tight-knit unit - led superbly by skipper Matt Livermore and inspirational veterans Ryan Simpson, Daniel Ferry and Caillin Porter - stood tall and showed the strength of a side that deserved its place in Division 1. Paul White and Damien Volta cut the Lakers’ midfield to shreds through the middle of the ground with their blistering speed, with White - who won the best on ground medal - responsible for a series of jaw-dropping plays. Up forward, Alex Hellriegel (three goals) took every contest head-on and clinched a series of big-time marks. The big man lifted on the big stage - as did Simpson and Porter. Their experience and composure - there’s that word again - made a huge impact, while the Bombers’ defensive unit as a whole withstood everything the Lakers threw at it; conceding just a single goal for the first half and three for the match. The Dompietro boys - Mat and Michael, Casey Thomsen, John MacKay, Luke McKenna, Brent Moloney, and young Jai Kruithof ... they’re just a few of a long list of Bombers players who selflessly played their roles. Fittingly, this truly was a whole team effort. Bailey Robinson, Tim Arnott and Jaedin Poecher were the Lakers’ biggest contributors but a host of their big-name stars were kept quiet by a Bombers side that - right from the start of the year, its first back at their Chandler Reserve home - earned its premiership.

Emerald skipper Matt Livermore led from the front in his side's premiership win over Kinglake. 144295 “This has been an emotional rollercoaster - it’s been a long, hard year,” said Bombers president Bruce Rush after the game. “It’s been an emotional ride for a lot of people, so it’s good to be able to reward them. “I’m the most proud of the way we stuck together during the hard times - I was proud of the way our people behaved and were a support to each other, but also the way in which they stayed focused on this end game which they had to do.” Livermore said his biggest over-riding feeling after the win was, simply, relief. “We knew at half-time they’d have the wind in the third quarter and if we could peg level with them then we’d be right and it’d set ourselves for a big last quarter,” he said. “Credit to Kinglake - they played really hard in that third quarter. It was really physical, but with our leg speed and the games they’d played it was pretty hard for them to get up.” Livermore still marveled at the inner strength of his club, and couldn’t help but smile when the topic of returning to first division was brought up. “I think the club has been so solid since that tragic accident occurred. It’s almost created this special bond between everyone,” he said.

“You hear these stories in the news about footy clubs losing lives in car accidents but you think it’ll never happen to your club. When it does, you’ve got no idea how it much it rocks not only the footy club but the whole community. “The way the club got around each other, and the support we all got from the community was just outstanding. “I think that’s why you play footy - it’s the sport you play for, but it’s the company you enjoy the most. It’s really special. We’re lucky to have a club like this - you could almost call it a family.” As for next year - the Bombers are hell-bent on making sure their stay in Division 1 isn’t a short-term one. “There’s a lot of good things on the horizon for this footy club and I can guarantee you that these boys will be very competitive in Division 1 next year - they won’t be easy-beats,” Bek said. “Look, it’s not important if other people don’t think we can match it in Division 1. “What’s important is that we think we can. We’re not coming up next year to make up the numbers. We’re coming up to be fair dinkum and have a crack.”

Sport Sam Turner of Healesville flies for a strong mark.

Josh Wallis of Olinda flies high in the match against Healesville.

Bloods vie for glor y By JUDY ORREN DIVISION 1 SENIORS Healesville 13.13 (91) d Olinda Ferny Creek 7.12 (54) (Preliminary Final) Healesville will play off in the grand final against Wandin next week and will go into the game with plenty of confidence after a very commanding 37-point victory over Olinda in the Preliminary. Healesville led at every change of this clash and even though they never really dominated, they were always on top throughout the game. Healesville led by just one goal at the first change, and increased that to 15 points by half-time, but it was the third term that saw Healesville kick away. They got right on top defensively and held Olinda to just two behinds while they added 3.3 to jump out to a 34-point lead at the final change. The last quarter was an even enough battle, and Olinda did fight it out but Healesville still had the edge with a 4 goal to 3 term to win well and move into the grand final. Healesville best players: D. Anderson, C. Adams, P. Fermanis (1 goal) Olinda Ferny Creek best players: D. Rohrmann (1 goal), S. Horner (1 goal), J. Wallis

DIVISION 1 RESERVES Mount Evelyn 12.8 (80) d Wandin 7.9 (51) (preliminary final) This game was a beauty for three quarters with neither side able to break away. Wandin led by just three points at quarter time with both sides only managing 1 goal apiece. The second term was a little more free flowing as goals started to come with Mount Evelyn having the slight edge, booting 4 goals to 3 to take a three-point lead into the main break. The third term was another tough hit out with both sides scoring two goals which gave Mount Evelyn a one-goal lead at the final break. Mount Evelyn played a fast running brand of football in the last term and finished strong as they slammed home 5 last quarter goals to 1 to pull away late and

record a very impressive 29-point win. They will now take on Upwey in the grand final for the ultimate glory. Mount Evelyn best players: D. Broadway (1 goal), D. Cope (2 goals), J. Arthur (2 goal) Wandin best players: J. Ladner, M. O’Donohue, M. Shanks

DIVISION 2 RESERVES Yarra Junction 6.5 (41) d Emerald 4.6 (30) (grand final) Yarra Junction played Emerald in the 2nd Semi Final two weeks ago and went down by 23 points, but bounced back to pull off the most important victory to become 2015 Premiers. This game was a low-scoring affair, with neither team able to string goals together to get any sort of decent break. The first quarter was about the only quarter that saw a little bit of open play with Yarra Junction booting 3.3 (21) to 2.1(13) to take the early lead. The second and third quarter were both torrid slogs with both teams only adding two goals to their total which saw Yarra Junction leading by just one goal at the final change. The last term was more of the same as scoring was almost impossible, but it was Yarra Junction that broke through to kick the only major of the term which was enough for them to hold on and win by 10 points and celebrate premiership victory. Yarra Junction best players: A. Ward (Winner of the ‘Best on Ground’ medal), B. Charman, C. Hoare Emerald best players: M. Steer, W. Ladner, N. Williams

UNDER 18S Wandin 10.11 (71) d Upwey Tecoma 6.14 (50) (preliminary final) Wandin has had a great finals series, and it continues as they have advanced to the grand final after a great win over Upwey. Wandin was held goalless in the first term and could only manage four behinds but Upwey only slotted 1.4 to lead by just one goal at the first change. Wandin went hard at every contest in the second term and won the contested battles around the ground, which showed on the score-

board as they booted 4 goals to 1 to lead by 11 points at the main break. The third quarter did see Upwey start to win more of the ball but they wasted their chances, kicking 2.6 to Wandin 2 straight, which gave Wandin a onegoal lead going into the final quarter. Wandin finished the day looking the fresher as their running game came to the fore. They finished the day booting 4 goals to 2 to win by 21 points, and will now take on Healesville in the grand final next week. Wandin best players: M. Sandfort, D. Alexander, J. James. Upwey Tecoma best players: B. Oates (1 goal), A. Milner, S. Shineberg. Healesville 12.16 (88) d Olinda Ferny Creek 5.8 (38) (preliminary final)

Healesville started well with a 4 goal to 1 opening term to open up a handy 21-point lead at the first change, but Olinda switched on in the second term and hit back booting 3 goals to 1 to trail by just 8 points at half-time. Healesville really did have control in the third term as they held Olinda scoreless, but they were a bit wasteful as they booted 3.7 for the term, but it was still a handy 33-point lead to Healesville at three-quarter time. Healesville remained in control in the final term as they booted 4 goals to 1 to come away with a comfortable win and will go into next week’s grand final against Wandin in fine form. Healesville best players: L. Oliver (1 goal), R. Howard-Scales, S. Fisher (4 goals) Olinda Ferny Creek best players: B. Watson, B. Currie, L. Taylor

DIVISION 1 A GRADE NETBALL Wandin 34 d Yarra Glen 21 (preliminary final) Wandin was dominant early in this game as they defended superbly, holding Yarra Glen to just three goals in the first half while they slotted 19 to have a commanding 16-goal lead at half-time. To Yarra Glen’s credit, they did fight the game out in the second half and, in fact, outscored Wandin but they just couldn’t make too much of a dint into Wandin’s lead to be of any real threat.

The victorious Yarra Junction reserves team celebrates in fine style. Yarra Glen scored 18 second-half goals to 15, but it was Wandin’s dominance early that set up their victory and they’ll go into next week’s grand final against Olinda feeling pretty good about their form. Wandin best players: Tayissa Coppinger, Gabrielle Sinclair (22 goals), Ella Priestley Yarra Glen best players: Nicole Moate, Peta Fay, Alana Stone
