Mulch ado about something IT’S time to start preparing gardens for the drier months, and council can help. Noosa Council offers residents and ratepayers up to three cubic metres of single-grind – or coarse-grind – mulch for free. Residents can self-load the mulch at the Pomona and Cooroy Waste Transfer Stations, or visit the shire’s Eumundi-Noosa Road landfill where staff can load it for them. “Mulch is a great way to maintain soil moisture in the garden, which helps extend the time between watering so as to conserve water during the hot Queensland summer months, says Noosa Council Waste Co-ordinator Ian Florence. “Mulching also keeps the soil temperature constant, plus you’re adding extra organic matter to the soil when you add mulch to your gardens. Council also provides higher quality double-grind mulch which is ideal for use as a soil conditioner, for $20 per cubic metre. The coarse-grind mulch is available to commercial customers for $7.50 per cubic metre from the Noosaville landfill and $5.50 per cubic metre from the Cooroy and Pomona Waste Transfer Stations. Self-loading applies at the Cooroy and Pomona Waste Transfer Stations, while the Eumundi-Noosa Road landfill offers a loading service. Mr Florence said council had a vast supply of the free mulch ready to go. Council generates the mulch from green waste collected at landfill. For further information, contact council on (07) 5329 6500.

SPRING is the perfect time to get out into the garden, enjoy some sunshine and plant some blooms ready for the warmer months. Noosa has a subtropical climate, so we look at some of the best plants, fruit trees and vegetables to plant this season, as well as the benefits of mulch and how you can bring the bees back to your yard. locals waging Noosa is well-known for its beautiful landscape and natural wildlife, but a war on weeds has been declared to help keep our region beautiful. To help local residents learn what they can do to help, Noosa Integrated Catchment Association Inc project and member support officer Wendy May explains just what the bush care groups get up to. THE War on Weeds continues with an Everyone’s Environment Grant from the Government for us to remove Singapore Daisy. Other weeds targeted include Ground Asparagus, Siratro, Corky Passion Vine, Thickhead, Mile-a-minute, Lantana, Easter Cassia, Broadleaf Pepper Trees, Prickly Pear and Mother of Millions. These and other grants make it possible for local volunteer Bushland Care groups to achieve their goals of a weed-free Noosa Biosphere. The Fall of Singapore and War on Weeds programs are really making progress on the exotic invader

war on weeds

“Sphagneticola trilobata’ (Singapore Daisy) which we are sure most people can see choking our creeks and parks and threatening the ecological value and indeed the amenity value of our environment. Bushland Care volunteers play an important role in revegetating cleared or degraded areas to enhance connectivity, improve habitat value and mitigate erosion. Activities conducted at working bees include seed collecting; maintaining plantings; identifying fauna and flora; and consulting on long-term planning issues to ensure ecological sustainability. Bushland reserves worked on by bushland care groups have shown significant reductions in exotic species and fabulous improvements in biodiversity. Some reserves have undergone incredible transformations from grassy, mown areas, into forests, providing suitable habitat for koalas expanding their territories, frogs, birds and butterflies and building wildlife corridors. How can you get involved? Through a range of awareness raising events, including bus trips, festivals and National Tree Day plantings, the Bushland Care program has proven to be a highly successful way of engaging the wider community in regional environmental issues. Driven by passionate and knowledgeable volunteers, there are over 300 members working

on 21 sites in Noosa. These amazing people are out rain, hail or shine, to weed, plant and have a good laugh in your local parks and reserves. Caring for bushland is not just a healthy, outdoor, physical activity, it also provides mental stimulation for the community and the opportunity for like-minded people to meet and enjoy their time. For more information on coming projects or to sign up visit www.noosariver.com.au.

THE strawberry season runs from July to October in Queensland, so don’t miss your chance to enjoy some of these sweet delights this spring. Strawberries are considered to be within the elite superfood group thanks to them being nutrientrich and packed with antioxidants like vitamin C. Local growers in the Noosa region even offer customers the chance to pick their own punnet of strawberries, so you can choose the biggest, most juicy strawberries to take home. The humble berry can also be versatile in the kitchen making a great topping for toast, a delicious addition to sweet desserts and of course, they can be enjoyed simply on their own or dipped in chocolate.

Method 1. Trim and season the joint and cut the trimmings into cubes. 2. Heat a frying pan and seal the join by frying it for six minutes on the fatty side, making sure it is still slightly pink in the middle. Fry the trimmings as well.

BASIL plants are often sensitive to cold and frost, making them an ideal herb to grow in the Noosa climate. They can simply be planted in a mediumsized pot and placed near a window for a springtime supply of the beautiful herb. Basil is most often used to make pesto, the perfect accompaniment to a range of springtime dishes from fresh pasta with a dash of cream to spreading on toasted ciabatta. Pesto is traditionally made from basil, and when teamed with tomato and garlic is an unbeatable combination. Ingredients: 115 gram fresh basil 4 cloves of garlic 50g pine kernels/ toasted pine nuts 1/2 teaspoon salt 50g freshly grated

pecorino cheese 50g freshly grated Parmesan cheese 150g extra virgin olive oil

cooking

Hint: When herbs are mixed with coarse sea salt and then spread on the meat, they will form a hard crust when cooked. When the crust cracks open a delicious aroma bursts forth. Hint: Chervil is a herb that looks similar to parsley with pinnate leaves but hairy undersides. The leaves and the thin stems can be eaten and the herb is known to help increase the flavour of other herbs.

Method: 1. Wash and dry the basil thoroughly and chop coarsely. 2. Peel the garlic cloves and chop coarsely, 3. Toast the pine kernels in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes to increase the flavour. 4. Using a mortar and pestle, pound the peeled garlic, pine nuts and salt in the mortar. 5. Add the coarsely chopped basil to the mixture and crush to a fine paste. 6. Gradually add the finely grated cheeses and stir in carefully, 7. Add the olive oil in a trickle and stir in well, slowly.

Spread a thin layer of mustard on the fatty side of the joint and then spread the herb mixture on top to a depth of 6mm, 7. Noosa Today takes five with Taubmans brand ambassador and colour creative director, Shaynna Blaze, to talk spring trends, how to get started on that makeover and how to choose a colour to suit your room.

What kind of impact can the colour of a wall have on a room? The colour of your walls can have a huge impact on both the physical appearance of a room as well as the emotional connection you can have. When you’re painting a space there are many tricks you can play on the eye by simply using the right colours. The rule to remember is that cool colours appear to recede, whereas warm colours seem to come towards you. So to make a space seem bigger, use a cool colour on the walls, but to make a large room seem cosier, use warm colours. It’s also important to remember that colour can affect the mood in a room, which will vary for every individual. Some people might consider green a fun, energetic colour while others could associate it with negative connotations, like greed or envy. For spring, cool colours, such as Taubmans Swordfish and Dancing Waters, give energy to a room, which will help you jump out of your winter rut. If you want a warmer palette, then you may choose a pink, like Taubmans Really Rose or Pink Clay Pot, which is a surprisingly versatile colour as it works well in combination with grey, cream and white.

and choose neutral colours that you can build off and create new looks throughout the year. A grey fabric couch is a great place to start in the living room as it is comfortable in winter and summer, plus pale yellows, warm oranges, black, dark grey and soft blues can all be matched with grey tones. Wooden furniture in a medium tone can add an extra element of warmth to a room, while also being practical, hard wearing and not likely to age as trends change. Starting with a neutral colour scheme and good quality furniture will set you up for easy seasonal changes throughout the year. When it does come time to update your look, and if you’re redecorating on a budget, choosing just one or two items to change can have a dramatic impact on the look and feel of a room, for minimal cost. Window coverings are a great place to start as they are a fast and affordable way to add a whole new look to a room.

Window coverings such as heavy blockout blinds can be used in winter to keep in the warmth, or in the height of summer to keep out the sun, while soft cotton curtains can create a sense of lightness and freshness in a room during spring. Large curtain suppliers, as well as boutique makers, can offer a range of fabrics for you to choose from, which can then be made into drapes, roman blinds, curtains or even cushions and bedheads to continue the chosen theme throughout your home. The Blinds Place recommends teaming soft, uncoated fabric curtains or a sheer, lace-look fabric with a block out lining behind for heat protection while maintaining a light and fresh look. Match the new curtains with a couple of new cushions for the couch, plus a fresh bunch of spring flowers and the whole room will feel fresh and updated.

REDECORATING your home to add a touch of spring doesn’t have to mean a whole new look or a massive dent in your wallet. Starting with a neutral base colour and then adding different colours, textures and accessories can have a big impact on the feel of the room throughout the year, and can be easily changed or added to as the seasons roll through. Grey is a perfect neutral colour to choose as the base of your room design, and when paired with soft blues and pale yellows the combination creates a sense of calm and spring time freshness in any room. It’s wise to first invest in good quality furnishings that will last the distance,
