Caring feet hit the street IT’S a clear and simple message that strikes the heart - bring William home. He may have gone missing in another town in another state, but the disappearance of four-year-old William Tyrrell has captured the nation’s attention with thousands of people from around Australia walking for William on Saturday to mark one year since the toddler was last seen. The events were held to raise awareness of William’s disappearance and to offer parents the chance to start a conversation on child safety. For more, see page 4.

Horror at home By JOLENE OGLE AN HORRIFIC week of domestic violence that saw the murders of two women and a machete attack on another woman has firmed the State Government’s resolve to act of the nationwide epidemic. In a statement to the media, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced a raft of immediate actions to tackle domestic and family violence in Queensland, including improvements to the way police handle complaints. The measures include priority attention for anyone who attends the front counter of a police station on domestic violence issues and the introduction of police supervisors to conduct mandatory quality checks on all over-the-counter requests for domestic violence orders (DVO).

Matt Rees Jones

But local police say they have already been carrying out the emergency measures as standard procedure for many years, and what is needed are tougher penalties for offenders. Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said his team had always prioritised domestic and family violence. “Domestic violence has always been a priority at any station I’ve been responsible for and I can assure you it’s always been a priority for my staff,” he said. “If someone phones up and says there’s a domestic, our communication centre always prioritises that as a code two, lights and sirens ... we get cars to the home as soon as we can. In that sense, we’re already carrying out the measures at this end of the coast. “Secondly, if you come to the

counter we do our best to listen to what you say, we then make an assessment whether we need to take action straight away.” Sen Sgt McReight said there was currently a multi-layered approach to domestic violence at Noosa Heads police station. “From an officer in charge point of view, every morning I get into the occurrence sheet and the minute I see a DV incident reported I read it to see if I’m satisfied with the actions of the officers attending,” he said. “If I’m not satisfied with the actions I then question the officers and they explain the situation. Maybe the evidence wasn’t there and so on. "But, I’m very glad to say there are very few incidents where I need to question the actions.” Noosa Heads police station also has a domestic violence liaison offi-

cer who is responsible for overviewing all domestic violence matters for every shift they work, plus they connect with people involved in DV and see if there’s something the police can do and liaise with all support agencies with referrals. Sen Sgt McReight said domestic violence knew no discrimination, with officers called to at least one DV incident per day in Noosa Shire in recent weeks. “Most incidents occur in the late evening or early morning,” he said. “Alcohol and drugs are usually involved and it’s usually the neighbours who phone us to say they have heard someone screaming or a disturbance.” Sen Sgt McReight said he couldn’t comment on the State Government’s plan to increase the maximum penalties for first-time breaches of DVOs

to three years' jail and subsequent breaches to up to five years' jail, but he said it was important for people to understand the police were not always able to act in certain situations. “Sometimes actions can’t be policed because of the information provided by the person attending the police station because regardless of what happens, remember evidence has to be collected to support the case beyond reasonable doubt in the court of law,” he said. Sen Sgt McReight said the best way to ensure action could be taken against an offender is to provide evidence either in the form of photographs or recordings. “What the public needs to realise is we present the evidence to the court and the court interprets it and makes the findings,” he said. Keep it clean, no butts here By JOLENE OGLE LOCALS frustrated with continually cleaning-up cigarette butts from Noosa Main Beach are calling on Noosa Council to provide better facilities so smokers can bin their butts. Markus Hanley and Anne Oxley, who were both busy collecting cigarette butts from the garden beds next to the Noosa Main Beach lifeguard tower on Monday 14 September, said it was time for smokers to be more responsible when it came to disposing of their butts. “It’s a shame because this is a lovely place for people to come and sit and enjoy the view of the beach,” Markus said. The long-time local, who comes to Noosa Main Beach three times a week as part of his triathlon training, said he was sitting on the wall resting when he began to notice the number of cigarette butts in the garden bed. “I don’t know what made me look, but I noticed they were everywhere,” he said. “I want to know what the council can do about this.

There needs to be more bins and smokers need to use them and not the garden bed.” Anne said she cleans up the garden beds most mornings while her husband swims in the ocean. “I do this most days,” she said. “I usually get a bag full of rubbish, including cigarette butts. I think there needs to be more signs to remind smokers to bin their butts.” Current laws make it illegal for anyone to smoke between the flags on a patrolled beach, but Markus said the council needed to put facilities in place to make it easier to bin cigarette butts. There is currently one rubbish bin located near the lifeguard tower, at the front of the Noosa Surf Club, with the closest cigarette disposal bin being on the other side of the road on the path next to the Police Beat. Noosa Council were asked for comment but no reply had been received by time of going to press. Have an opinion? We would love to know what you think. Sea change plan for Noosa Triathlon By JOLENE OGLE LOCAL triathletes were on hand to launch the 2015 Noosa Triathlon and announce some exciting changes in the popular event’s format. Ironman Asia-Pacific CEO Geoff Meyer said the exciting changes include moving the swim leg of the multi-sport event from the Noosa Sound canals to Noosa Main Beach, a move that has been welcomed by athletes. “Noosa Triathlon has always been a benchmark for other events,” he said. “As event managers, we need to always work towards keeping the Tri as the benchmark of our sport. So this year in our planning, we’ve been looking at ways to refresh and evolve the event to stay relevant to our customers and give the best athlete experience possible.” Mr Meyer said the proposed

There is a lot of logistics that go into it,” he said. “But what we want to do this year is move the swim course to Noosa Main Beach.” Mr Meyers said changes to the Noosa Tri swim leg will become more spectator friendly as it

moves onto the beach. “We want to create a theatre,” he said. “It will be something that will be so spectator friendly, which we’ve never had in the past being in the canal, and it’s going to be an athlete experience second to none.” While the final approval is yet to be received, the move from the canals to the beach would mean Hastings Street will be closed to

traffic as triathletes will cross the road to transition between courses. Sunshine Coast-based triathlete and 2012 Ironman World Champion Pete Jacobs said the change moves the Noosa Tri to “the next level”. “Ocean swims in triathlons are becoming rare,” he said. “So to take the swim leg and put it on such an iconic beach ... is really exciting especially when it’s such a protected beach and such an Australian icon.” More than 8000 triathletes are expected to flock to Noosa for the main event on Sunday 1 November, with up to 13,000 athletes to take part across the event that runs from Wednesday 28 October. The first Noosa Triathlon was held in 1983, and is now the world’s second largest Olympic distance triathlon, Australia’s largest triathlon and the largest multisport festival of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Swift arrest

LOCAL police have been praised for their quick actions following the arrest of a man charged with armed robbery at Noosa Heads on Monday 14 September. Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said good information from the public helped police locate and arrest the offender within an hour of the alleged crime taking place. Police will allege that at about 9.30am on Monday 14 September, a 22-year-old man went to a home of an acquaintance on Coral Street, Noosa Heads. It will be alleged the man threatened the resident with a 30cm kitchen knife and then stole $500 in cash from the home. Police were able to locate the man a short time later on Emu Mountain Road, where he was arrested and taken to the watch house. The 22-year-old Coolum Beach man has been charged with one count each of armed robbery and entering a dwelling with intent, and two counts of possessing a dangerous drug. He is due to appear at the Maroochydore Magistrates' Court on 23 September.

MORE than 150 locals gathered at Tickle Park, Coolum, on Saturday to join the nationwide Walk 4 William in a bid to bring a missing toddler home. William Tyrrell was three when he disappeared from his grandma’s home in Kendall, NSW, while playing in his favourite Spiderman suit on 12 September last year. Now, one year later, more than 80 Walk 4 William events took to the streets on Saturday 12 September, from 10.30am, to raise awareness of the missing toddler as well as offer parents the chance to start a conversation on child safety. Coolum’s Walk 4 William was one of many events on the coast with hundreds of locals taking part in walks at Kawana and Eumundi.

By JOLENE OGLE COUNCIL staff have confirmed major capital works projects are underway, with repairs to the Munna Point Bridge expected to start in the next few weeks. In the Planning and Organisation Committee meeting on Tuesday (15 September) Noosa Council director of planning and infrastructure Martin Drydale said Council were ready to award significant tenders over the next few weeks. “As we’ve mentioned before at previous committee meetings, the first three months of this year are really around finalising the designs, going through the tender process,” he said. “The major carried-over projects are Munna Point Bridge. That

now is getting close to the final detailed design and construction activities are likely to start in the next few weeks. That will then start consuming capital dollars. “The other significant carryover project (from last financial year) was Rifle Street, Pomona, and that work has now commenced.” Mr Drydale said the sealing of Dr Pages Road has gone out to tender, with plans to award the tender in the next month. “All in all, those three projects on their own will total somewhere near $10 million,” he said. When asked about this financial year’s capital works program, Mr Drydale said it was progressing “really well”. “Dr Pages Road was a sig-

nificant part of that. Another significant one is the resurfacing of David Low Way. That’s going to commence soon and we have a lot of parks works currently planned and underway as well,” he said. “So we’re pretty confident that certainly by Christmas we would have gone through a significant part of that capital budget.” Mr Drydale said the held-over works from last financial year’s budget won’t impact this year’s program with many projects underway or in the planning stages. “We’ve fully planned out this year all of the capital works projects,” he said. “Certainly by the end of the third quarter we will be more than three quarters of the way through, including the carry-overs.”

Councillor Frank Wilkie said he wanted to compliment Mr Drydale and his team for their hard work over the past financial year. “With a $24 million capital works budget, you’ve completed 70 per cent of it. Considering the former Noosa Council had a capital works budget of ... $6 million, you delivered on 70 per cent of a $24 million capital works budget, which is about $16.8 million worth of works, which is still delivering two and a half times the output in capital works of the former Noosa Council,” he said. “So the bar was set very, very high. Perhaps we might have learnt something about managing community expectations. It’s good to be ambitious, a lot of work has to be done, but it’s still a very hard working team you have.”

New boss for business CCIQ Noosa has a new president and a new allegiance with some of Noosa’s most influential local groups in a move designed to create a holistic approach to economic growth. Former vice-president Peter Chenoweth was elected as the new CCIQ Noosa president at the CCIQ Noosa annual meeting on 8 September. He thanked former president Sarah Fisher who, he said, had stepped into the role in 2013 when few were prepared to take it on and had done a great job. “She consolidated the chamber, then grew its membership significantly and this year she has developed a momentum which many people have commented on,” he said. “Quite a number people have come to me over the past month and have said how much they like where the chamber is now going and have encouraged me to keep on going in that direction.” Mr Chenoweth said there

Mr Chenoweth ruled out any suggestion he would run for local council next year and said he was committed to growing CCIQ Noosa and promoting its Four Initiatives program, plus maintaining his role as festival director of the chamber’s inaugural, Noosa International Film Festival in November 2016. “The chamber has a tremendous opportunity before it to do tremendous good for the business community. Chamber has internet focus OUTGOING CCIQ Noosa President Sarah Fisher will continue to work towards getting faster internet connection for small business in the region. Ms Fisher, who has stood down after two years as president of the local chamber, said it would continue to be a focus for CCIQ Noosa. “CCIQ Noosa will continue to work towards getting the Noosa Shire better internet connections here in Noosa,” she told the chamber AGM last week, including Member for Noosa Glen Elmes. “And we promise to keep the business community abreast of the situation and bring to life any new developments.” Ms Fisher was instrumental in arranging for the NBN Co to visit the chamber in July and address concerns from small business about the lack of progress of the broadband rollout. “It is a matter of basic equity. Access to adequate broadband is a vital piece of

enabling infrastructure, upon which the fortunes and growth of many local businesses depend,” Ms Fisher said at the time. Unfortunately, NBN Co said Noosa and surrounding businesses were unlikely to be connected to the NBN before mid-2017. Ms Fisher, who will now be concentrating on her role as director of Austwide Insurance Brokers, remains as a committee member of CCIQ Noosa. In her farewell speech, she said 2015 had been a momentous year for the chamber and it would only get better. The release of the Four Initiatives program, including a feasibility study for a convention centre and plans to grow the local business economy by 10 per cent, had been the highlights. “Some of these initiatives are going great guns and others are going to be a work in progress. CCIQ Noosa will continue to keep you updated on these projects,” she said. “CCIQ Noosa has this year

been invited to be on the focus group for the Noosa Economic Plan. I hope that CCIQ Noosa continues to grow this partnership with the Noosa Council. “It’s very important that our organisation is able to communicate effectively with our business members and the Noosa Council. It’s the business community who benefits if we can all work together. “This year has also seen CCIQ Noosa being instrumental in forming collaborative collections with various community groups and organisations. “We have achieved a great momentum for Noosa and I’m hopeful that the new committee will be able to continue the good teamwork, for the interests of the business community. “CCIQ Noosa will continue to provide value to our members and be an organisation and something that the business community will be proud of and will continue to support.”

NOOSA’S Biggest Community Survey is coming to a letterbox near you as Noosa MP Glen Elmes gets ready to hear what the community thinks on a range of issues. Due to be posted from Monday 14 September, the three-page survey covers a range of topics from same-sex marriage to euthanasia, development in Noosa to camping on Noosa North Shore and everything in between. Mr Elmes said he wanted to find out what the community thought when it came to some of the region’s most important issues such as how locals rated the overall health services in Noosa Shire, whether parents were satisfied with class numbers in their child’s school, and the contentious topic of the Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale re-boundary debate. Over 20,000 homes will receive the survey in the post from Tuesday 15 September, with the survey also available online at www.glenelmes.com “The questions in the sur-

“Residents can answer all the questions, or just the ones they are passionate about,” he said. The survey will include a reply paid address for Mr Elmes’ office, so anyone who filled out the form could put it straight into the post box. “We’re hoping thousands of people will want to have their say so we’ve made the return process as easy as possible,” he said.

Uni scores with new games degree Cooroy RSL manager Tina Mayfield with RDA secretary Jan O'Halloran, RDA treasurer Sharon Watts, dressage team member Jessica Nielsen, and Jessica's parents and RDA volunteers Ann Nielsen and Gary Bell.

Night of belly laughs ented young riders aged from 11 years up to young adult. “These riders are working hard to achieve all the qualifying and selection requirements for para-Olympic competition,” she said. The Sunshine Coast RDA dressage team is fortunate to be trained by president and coach Matty Sormani, who is a highly-qualified dressage coach with previous success in preparing riders for World Games and Para Olympics. For more information about Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled, to sponsor a horse or to volunteer please visit the website http://sunshinecoastrda. com or email admin@sunshinecoastrda.com. Ready to game: Lecturer in Serious Games Development at USC, Ben Rolfe. “We want to attract people who may not be that capable of coding, but who have a creative spark and are story tellers,” he said. “I think we will also see students interested in taking on real world problems - people who might traditionally enrol in a business program, for instance, because of the potential business-related applications of serious games.” Interactive Games and Entertainment Association CEO Ron Curry said graduates of the program would have a range of career paths open to them across industries.

“The application of games is quite wide, and it’s absolutely a growing field,” Mr Curry said. “There’s a whole lot of industries they could work in - healthcare, education, even things like mining, where you’re teaching people to operate machinery.” USC will introduce a range of new study programs in 2016, including a Bachelor of Sports Studies, a combined Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Criminology and Justice and a Bachelor of Environmental Management. A NIGHT of hilarious laughs and cheeky bingo calls has helped raise almost $2000 for the local Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Cooroy RSL teamed up with the much-loved Melony’s Drag Bingo to raise the funds so the dressage team can travel to training camps and competitions. At the official cheque presentation, RDA treasurer Sharon Watts said a special thanks must go to the Cooroy RSL, Melony Brests and all the generous sponsors who donated goods to the raffle. “Special thanks go to Jessica Nielsen (dressage team member) and her parents, Ann Nielsen and Gary Bell for volunteering so much time to put the raffle together and sell the tickets on the night. GET ready to go up a level as the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) offers Australia’s first Bachelor of Serious Games in 2016. This innovative degree will equip graduates with the skills and experience to apply games to fields including health care, education and marketing. USC’s first-class simulation environments and digital technology will give students the chance to specialise in game art, interactive narrative or programming. USC Professor of Disruptive Technologies Stuart Smith said games were no longer just a form of entertainment but were increasingly utilised to take on real-world needs. “Serious games use the principles of games and play and apply them to things outside leisure and recreation,” Professor Smith said. “We can look at creating games for rehabilitating someone who has had a stroke, addressing youth mental health issues or engaging new customers in the marketing world. “This degree has the scope to expand our notion of what games are. “Navigating your way through a degree is somewhat like a game anyway - you start out without many skills, you level up, you gain skills, and your skills are tested and challenged.” Professor Smith said the Serious Games degree would appeal to people interested in programming and coding, as well as those with interests in creative fields like design and storytelling.

INBRIEF Noosa Civic A DECISION on whether to refuse the controversial Noosa Civic Shopping Centre expansion will be held over to the Noosa Council's next General Meeting on Monday 21 September, due to the significance of the issue. In a report to the Planning and Organisation Committee meeting on Tuesday 15 September, council staff recommended the refusal of the planned expansion based on a number of reasons such as a belief the development won’t diversify Noosa’s economy and that the plan conflicts with the Noosa Plan’s intent for the site to provide “long-term, non-retail employment growth and diversification”. The report states the development will have “undesirable economic impacts on existing commercial centres” and the applicant has not demonstrated an “economic need for additional retail development in the Shire Business Centre”. The issue will now be discussed at the General Meeting on Monday 21 September with a final decision expected to be made at the Ordinary Meeting on Thursday 24 September.

Clean energy flows By KARINA MAY NOOSA is to be the supplier of clean, cost efficient and renewable energy to remote communities after tests of a new water turbine showed positive results. The in-current hydrokinetic turbine, designed by Nextera Energy, was tested on the Noosa River with the help of the Coastguard last week. CEO of Nextera Energy Paul Camilleri said the tests far exceeded their expectations for the turbine. “Based on the results we got yesterday, we were quite staggered, to be honest with you, we got two and half times the capacity that we originally designed for, at much slower speeds,” he said. “So that means previously we were looking at currents in the tropics, thinking that’s probably where it should go but now we find that in currents of less than one knot we can actually generate electricity, so it’s quite amazing.”

Running at two knots, the turbines have the ability to produce electricity for 45 homes. It is also estimated the final product will be up to 15 per cent more efficient once the design has been refined. This means the turbines, first to be used in Aceh, Indonesia, have even greater applications than first thought. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said the floating turbine could be used in places such as Australia’s Indigenous remote communities that relied on diesel power. “Most are built on rivers or by the seaside so to have one of these in the river or the ocean where there is a flow of current, and as you’ve seen today, we operated at between one knot and two and half knots, so it generates an enormous amount of power that will help these communities significantly,” he said. “They will cut maintenance costs right down and virtually eliminate fuel costs. Anywhere that you’ve got water that flows,

CEO of Nextera Energy Paul Camilleri with Member for Noosa Glen Elmes. even flows very slowly, has an application.” Mr Elmes said the turbines didn’t only benefit remote communities, but also the Noosa community. The entire production for the turbines is being completed in Noosa and with 80 turbines to de-

sign and build; this will see an increase in the local workforce. Mr Elmes said he was excited to see such a great export coming from Noosa. “It’s got all the great applications and the fact it’s being made in Noosa, through a Noosa-based company, is fantastic,” he said.

Injury brings a change for the better By TANIA PHILLIPS WHEN injury ended former professional Rugby player Richard Kelly’s career earlier than expected - it opened a new door for him. Richard turned to coaching the sport he loved in his native South Africa and found working with youth and helping them navigate life’s ups and downs was a new passion, and he became a life coach as well. Eventually his day job working with Vegan food brought he and his family to Noosa two years ago where he was involved once again in Rugby - however after talking to local parents he once again saw a need to help young men find their way in life an Invicta Youth was born. “We are passionate and committed to initiate positive changes in the lives of our youth where they feel empowered to live with purpose and meaning”, Richard said. “With the increasing distractions facing the youth today, it can be extremely difficult to reach through the clutter and assist the youth to navigate this ever increasingly complex world we live in. Social media, technology, online

but we’ll take younger due to many queries from parents. “We bring in incredibly inspiring and knowledgeable speakers and mentors to contribute throughout the program such as social media experts, a senior constable from the Noosa Police and fitness/nutrition specialists. “We are also fortunate to have well known personality Ian Jacobs, triple world champion kickboxer and Australian sports celebrity who has this to say: 'Becoming triple world champion launched my profile and shaped my journey to create other champions in and out of the ring'.” He said topics covered will include dealing with social media and cyberbulling, finding your passion, learning the five maxims of life - character, sincerity, effort, etiquette and self control, making the right choices as well as dealing with adversity, grooming and style, nutrition and self-leadership. An Invicta Youth program will be held at the Noosa Lifestyle Centre on 26 September, from 9am to 2pm for more information contact invictayouth@gmail.com or call Richard Kelly on 0449 992 895.

A staff exchange program is netting fresh idea ideas from across the Tasman, with the council welcoming New Zealand local government employee Susan Jones to Noosa. Ms Jones is human resources and administration manager at Gore District Council on New Zealand’s South Island and she has spent the past week sharing ideas with Noosa staff, including planning and infrastructure director Martin Drydale, about different ways of doing business. Ms Jones spoke with councillors, attended council events, and visited neighbouring Gympie Regional Council during her two-week stay. Ms Jones said she was particularly interested in Noosa Council’s community jury initiative. “There are several similarities between our councils, for example the approach to environmental matters, and we are also a tourist area. Although we can’t offer Noosa’s 28 degree weather,” Ms Jones said. “It’s also been interesting to see the different approach to organisational matters such as human resources.”

Domestic and family violence is very real and it's happening in Noosa.

Horror at home From page 1 “We have no input on what the court decides, and so it should be.” Noosa Head domestic violence liaison officer Senior Constable Mark Jones spoke with Noosa Today about attending domestic violence incidents in the local community and said better deterrents were needed. “We’ll never stop domestic violence completely,” he said. “But we need stronger penalties to deter offenders.” Sen Constable Jones said it was frustrating when police attending a DV incident couldn’t arrest an alleged offender due to a lack of evidence or co-operation, but said he hoped urgent reforms led to stronger penalties for offenders. If you or anyone you know is affected by domestic or family violence, call DV Connect on 1800 811 811 or phone 000 in the case of an emergency. The Noosa Heads police station is located on Langura Street, Noosaville, and is open from Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm and can be phoned on 5440 8111. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Shark has a rockstar smile TELEVISION personality and entrepreneur Steve Baxter was the guest speaker at a Digital Entrepreneurs networking event last week at the Noosa Boardroom. The star of Channel Ten’s Shark Tank was welcomed like a rockstar by the crowd of 120 local entrepreneurs and businesspeople at the sell-out event. His passion and commitment to the startup community came through loud and strong according to event organiser Anne Lawrence from Noosa Boardroom. “He literally got mobbed by everyone wanting to talk with him,” Anne said. “His speaking session

went on for nearly an hour and he answered many questions about his personal journey both as a businessman and an investor, about startups and about the Australian techbusiness landscape. “He painted a convincing argument about the economic value of investing and supporting startups, who are distinct and different to small businesses and require special attention as they could literally become the next Google of the world.” “He encouraged us all to get involved in the debate and contribute to our local communities to ensure we are innovating and investing in order to future-proof our region.”

Steve is also the founder of successful startup hub and tech co-working space, River City Labs, and a strong advocate for Queensland’s local, entrepreneurial ecosystem. In addition to providing tips to entrepreneurs at the event, Steve spent the first part of the session with a group of teenagers from a range of schools, including Sunshine Beach High, helping inspire our region’s youth. The event was co-hosted by both Noosa Council and Noosa Boardroom. RDA Sunshine Coast was also a sponsor of this event, as part of the ongoing commitment to the collaborative Digital Sunshine Coast project.

Challenges create opportunities for solutions, and the NCBA also looks to collaborate as an advocacy group with other community associations to achieve positive outcomes. Our motto is 'Living in our Biosphere’ and is about 'Our People, Our Places, Our Future’. We are scheduling our first general meeting in early October. Our town, and our copper Between the Ron Lane’s

flags people

RON LANE

ACCORDING to the citation, the date was August 22, 1986 and the place was the country town of Yandina. The situation was, to put it mildly, somewhat dangerous. Barricading himself within a house an armed offender had repeatedly threatened to shoot anyone who approached the residence and had fired several shots, some in the direction of the police who had been summonsed. One of the officers on the scene was Constable 1/C Steven McReight now Senior Sergeant of Noosa District. “Our people had tried to negotiate with him to come out peacefully but he refused to do so, so a decision was made to somehow get inside the house and disarm him. We had police dogs on site and a move was worked out,” Sen Sgt McReight said. “My job was to try and get a visual of the offender, pin-point his location, identify the weapon and then we would move in with the dogs. I was able to locate the gunman by climbing up a scaffold at the side of the building; but couldn’t be sure of the weapon type. We made our move but on entering the house the dog, a trained sniffer dog in the drug squad, stopped to sniff the air and the gunman turned the weapon in the direction of the team. No choice - we had to rush him. All went well - he was overpowered and on checking the weapon there was a cartridge in the breech. He later admitted that he fully intended to use it on the police.” As a result of their courage and complete disregard for their own personal safety our Senior Sergeant and three of his colleagues were awarded a Commendation for Courage and as was stated in their citation; “They are most deserving of this award.” For Stephen McReight it all started, when his application for a position at Teachers Training College in Brisbane was unsuccessful. “I wanted to become a physical training instructor but with only 40 plus positions available and over 845 applicants, gaining entrance into the college was very hard,” he said. After some discussions with family, Steve made up his mind and so it was that in February 1977 he entered the Police Academy in Brisbane to begin four months of training; training that was to be the start of a very successful career. Steve’s first posting was to the country town of Warwick and for several years he continued with

country postings which included towns such as Dalby, Landsborough, Nambour, Wandoan and Murgon/ Cherburg Mission. “Stationed in some of these country towns was certainly a great way to learn the trade. Being the arresting officer, the watch-house keeper and the prosecutor all in one was not unusual,” he said. “You just had to knuckle down and get on with the job.” A sparse population also made postings interesting, such as Wandoan with a population of some 600 people with probably another 600 spread out on the many outlying properties. As we sat and talked it became obvious here was a cop who would have fitted in nicely with the country people. Approachable, sincere and above all fair in the performance of his duties. These were virtues that were to gain not only the support but also the respect of the community in which he served. “To be a success you have to become involved in the community. If the officer is married, to have a wife who is also involved, can make life so much easier,” he said. “For me I was lucky. While stationed in Dalby in the early ’80s, I met Maree - the lady who was to become my wife. Maree came from Cooroy and we were married in 1984. Because of her country upbringing she fitted in well in the country towns.” For example in Murgon, Steve started the Blue Light Disco for the young locals, was involved in the swimming club (of which his wife was president) and the Adopt a Cop Program. But perhaps his biggest commitment was to the Murgon Rugby League Football Club where his involvement saw him coaching the Under 13s and 17s. Such was his contribution to the club, proudly known as the Mustangs, that before his next posting he was to become the proud recipient of Life Membership of the club. “Life as a country copper can be a great job, because you got to know the town and the people,” he said. “However, knowing all the local folk did have its drawback. If there was a fatal accident, you would find yourself having to deal with the deceased; people that you knew personally- or as in one case two young ones that I had been chatting to the day before.” While discussing this point, my mind was drawn to the number of times that we, the people of Noosa have watched an accident being reported on the evening news, without thinking even for a moment, what

Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight. our local copper being interviewed, might be going through. It was during his time in Mooloolaba that Steve went through what was to be one of his proudest experiences. “I had just finished my shift, arrived home, was inside the house when I heard this blood curdling scream. I ran to the neighbours house two doors down and there lying at the bottom of their swimming pool was a little boy of about two or three,” he said. “I got him out of the pool. There was no sign of life so I started to do resuscitation. Another neighbour

from across the road arrived and we commenced the two man procedure; paramedics were called and the child survived.’’ Several years later at Wandoan, Steve met up with the small child, who by then had grown into a young teenager. “I was at a primary school athletic carnival and I kept hearing his name called over the PA; he was winning everything he went into. Eventually his mother brought him over and we were introduced. ’You owe this officer everything so say thank you’ she said. We shook hands and it was certainly a great feeling.”

Now with retirement just some 22 months away, Sen Sgt McReight can look back on it all and in his own words know, “that I have helped make a difference and above all helped so many people.” “Also the working relationship we have in Noosa with our firies, SES, paramedics and Coast Guard is second to none. Regarding progress over the years, our major advancement would have to be all aspects of communication and the supply of basic needs for our officers.” Our town, our copper; looking after Our People.

Time to keep our guards up to protect boxing THERE must be an Olympic Games in the near future - around this time in the lead-up to at least the last four Games, the Australian Medical Association gets on its white horse and rides into town with the perennial ban the boxing campaign. The controversial push comes 11 months out from Rio, but also includes the Commonwealth Games on its bucket list. In a position statement on the sport, released last weekend, doctors say all forms of combat sport for people under 18 should be prohibited. The call also extends to media coverage of boxing to be subject to

Benny’s

beat BENNY PIKE

control codes similar to TV screening of violence. They’re also calling for medical staff to be present at every contest, able to stop bouts, examine and call off fights when necessary. AMA President and neurosurgeon Brian Owler, leads with his chin in saying ‘the aim of boxing is to knock out an opponent, which is inherently dangerous and sometimes fatal’. Mr Owler continues his attack “as

14 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 17 September, 2015

medical practitioners, the AMA is concerned by any sports that involves displays of interpersonal violence, and where the goal is to injure the opponent to the point that they are unable to continue“. Dear oh dear, I have lost count of the number of times I have had to defend my sport from these out of touch accusations that clearly show the good doctor hasn’t been to a recent boxing tournament. Local coaches Israel Kani and Mark Evans have put in enormous hours to successfully train both men and women in the art of self-defence. The good doctor is relating back to the old days, where most blokes who put the gloves on, were aiming

to help feed their family. Amateur boxing is tightly controlled and the official clubs are run under the International Boxing rules, where a doctor must be present at the weigh-in, check each fighter and can stop a bout when he or she feels necessary. I have just come back from the recent Pacific Games in Port Moresby, and yes, boxing was well received and yes there was a doctor present at all times. In fact, Tewantin’s Sam CameronHands will be in the ring this week at the World Youth Boxing Championships in Russia. I doubt Sam would be fighting if he wasn’t skilled in the tools needed

to defend himself. It’s a shame the AMA always take aim at the amateurs, rather than the cage fighters or the people who go around king-hitting on Friday nights. I am sure there are many readers who will have a shot at me due to my recent drink driving charges. They are entitled to their opinion; I can only apologise and assure you I am ashamed of my actions. I have let many down, in particular my family and friends. I have activated to fix the problems that have got me down over the past 12 months - it’s no excuse and I will do my best to never let it happen again. Until next time. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

LENSCAPE

Thanks to Paul Lanfear who captured this cheeky seagull stealing a chip straight from the mouth of a pelican on Noosa River foreshore. “I was down by the Boathouse with my daughter taking shots of the pelicans when someone sat on the picnic bench and started throwing chips for them,” he said. “As the pelican had one in its mouth the cheeky gull flew in and took it away. I’ve never seen anything like it.” The gull made a lucky escape with the chip. I FIND the comments of Dom Massoni in Noosa Today (3 September) even more “stupid" but also offensive and certainly ill-informed. I was a member of this jury which after five months of intensive deliberations upon very extensive and comprehensive input from a wide variety of sources came up with a report to council which extended into 35 pages and contained nine principal recommendations of which “banning plastic bags" was only one, and number eight at that. Hardly “10 seconds work for a kid in primary school“! There was no political pressure exerted on the jurors whatsoever, and indeed at the outset Mayor Noel Playford exhorted the jury to “start with a blank sheet of paper" in our approach to this very complex issue. It is a pity Dom didn’t trouble himself to read the full jury report (available on the council’s website) before embarking on his vitriolic criticism. John Rigby, Peregian Beach.

Conpiracy theory BOB Jarvis’s talent for drumming up conspiracy theories knows no bounds. In his most recent letter (Noosa Today, 10 September) he accuses me of a conflict of interest over the sealing of Dr Pages Road. As the public record shows, Gary Martin, who operates Living Valley Springs at Kin Kin, was one of many donors to my 2012 election to the Sunshine Coast Council. He did not donate to my 2013 election to the Noosa Council. The work on Dr Pages Road aims to benefit businesses and towns right across the Noosa hinterland by creating a sealed, round-trip tourist drive. I doubt that this project will have any impact on the operations of Living Valley Springs health retreat. This facility does not rely on tourists, and I’m told its customers almost always approach from the range road. As for Mr Jarvis’s query about roadworks carried out at Tunba Court, the simple answer is that I have no personal interest in those works. I don’t live close to the road, and nor am I personally associated with anyone in that road. These minor road and drainage works never came before a council meeting. And of course councillors cannot instruct staff. So the intimation of “vested interest“ here is absurd beyond belief. Mr Jarvis would do well to read up on what the State Government defines as a conflict of interest for councillors. For example, a councillor

16 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 17 September, 2015

does not have a conflict of interest if the local government is considering an ordinary business matter such as adoption of the council budget. Nor is it a conflict of interest if the councillor’s interest is no greater than that of other persons in the local government area. And, while we’re on the subject, it is not a conflict of interest if a councillor has a personal connection with a community group, club, school, church or political party unless they are an office-bearer of the organisation. My fellow councillors and I are all aware of the rules surrounding real or perceived conflicts of interest, and I believe we have all acted appropriately throughout the term of office. Tony Wellington, Noosa councillor.

To be applauded I THINK the majority of Australians will applaud the decision to increase the refugee intake and the $44 million pledged to assist with the costs of feeding and accommodating those in refugee camps elsewhere. You can bet your life no-one will send a postcard from Nauru or Manus Islands to those that are coming saying “Wish you were here“. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.

Alternative viewpoint I WONDER why my detractors don’t dispute my comments - why they denounce me instead of my assertions. I try to provide an alternative viewpoint and like all credible correspondents research the subject matter. In my opinion this council has been profoundly disappointing they’ve been beset by internal strife and haven’t been able to complete budgets (the trend continues, only 3.19 per cent at end of August instead of 16 per cent +), they’ve reduced funding for community projects and overseen losses in council assets. I also wonder why they’ve been preoccupied with the Biosphere and neglected economic policies. And why do NPA need a formal agreement with CCIQ? John Lobb, Peregian Springs.

The real threat SO, 52 weeks in a year - right? Some 62 women killed by their partner so far this year - more than two per week. This is the new meaning for home-grown terrorists. Billions are spent ‘to keep us safe’ from those who are ‘coming to get

us’. How much was cut from support services for these victims - about $300 million, wasn’t it? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

Some democracy IN REGARDS to the Community Jury, the council forced the New Democracy Foundation upon us. If they say they wanted Noosa to be more democratic the very first proof of this would have been to ask us, do we want this? What they did was you will have this. During the process I had the opportunity to have a discussion with the departmental manager (Wayne Schafer) - he told me he was in attendance with the jury sessions but wasn’t allowed to speak or give advice. There is not one piece of the jury findings or recommendations that Wayne could not have reported to council as part of his job. He is the most informed, experienced and the first person you would have asked. We are all fully aware of our shire’s diversity and we are a unique part of Queensland. For the jury, as part of your patting yourself on the back, don’t tell us about “plastic shopping bags and doggy poo bags” because I can ask young schoolkids about that - I don’t think that is the $50,000 question answered. Bob Jarvis, Tewantin.

Standout election DURING the council election campaign in 2013 there were many things that stood out. One was being seated between Bob Abbott and Noel Playford and another was what Noel Playford had to say. No rates increase in his first year (achieved), sealing and upgrading Dr Pages Road which is now at the table to be done. To question the integrity of Noel Playford over this issue is just plain wrong. If people think they can contribute or do things better, then run at the next election. In other words, put up or shut up. When it comes to Nuske and Lobb I always thought they were satirical characters like HG and Roy. That was until they kept lobbing up to de-amalgamation meetings and election forums. The fact is they have the perfect names to be a tennis doubles team playing at the Delhi Open beaten in straight sets in Round One by Singh and Singh. Paul G. Lowe, former candidate Noosa Council, Pomona. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Not only does this elevated block have an uninterrupted view of the ocean and the beach across the green reserve it also has one of the best private beach access paths anywhere on the coast. The home was originally built in the mid'80s, but is of timeless design and superior construction.

Inside, the house is full of surprises. Living is spread over three generous levels, while the entire lower floor can be closed off from the main house and used as a private retreat with its own living area, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, ideal for in-laws or long term guests.

Mapping out site plans INTERESTED Peregian residents, councillors and council staff met recently at the Peregian Community House to discuss the new concept plans under further review for the Rufous Street site after public consultation. The development of a “knowledge campus" on one third of the site, with the remaining two-thirds of the site devoted to free recreational green space for general community use, is central to the plans. Noosa Council’s director of community services Alan (Fox) Rogers said the concept provided more open space than previously available to the public on the privately

owned site where a fee had to be paid in order to gain access to the bowls green and beach volleyball areas. “It also replaces the two asbestos-ridden buildings and maintenance shed of the former bowls club with structures designed to be environmentally sustainable,” he said.

park next to Veggie Village. Pedestrian links to Peregian village are also intended.“ Talks have been initiated with interested local businesses and universities regarding potential partnerships.

“The plans include a building that will foster IT- driven education and enterprise, mixed-use areas and capacity for a future community hub on the southern corner of the site near the tennis club.

The next step in the process is for council to analyse feedback from the September meeting of key stakeholders, revise concept plans and undertake traffic and financial feasibility studies, prior to lodging a Material Change of Use (MCU) for the northern end of the site.

“Nose-in car parking is proposed along Rufous Street along with an upgraded car

Home loan demand NEW data released for the July Housing Finance Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows 53,095 home loans were approved over the course of the month - up 0.3 per cent on the month prior. The total value of all dwelling commitments was also up, with more than $32 billion in home loans written throughout July. Mortgage Choice chief executive officer John Flavell said the spike in home loan demand and value of dwelling commitments was interesting, especially given the current market conditions.

Contraband are coming to Tewantin Noosa RSL on 18 September.

today A rockin’ good time NOOSA’S LIFESTYLE GUIDE

IT isn’t illegal but it is so good it probably should be - local band Contraband is a mix of seasoned musicians who have a rich background in the music industry. Their experience shows with every croon from vocal seductress Leah Russ, every lick of lead guitar by Ben Richards, the cool foundation

beats of Dave Evans and every beat of the drums by Mark O’Bryen. Together they have formed the ultimate party band covering artists of many genres. The entire repertoire is focussed on getting the party started and keeping it going. Florence and the Machine, Pink, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Alanis Morrisette

and The White Stripes plus lots of classic top 40 rock are always firm favourites. New music from Willl Pharell, Daft Punk, Katy Perry, Lily Allen, Paramore and Sheppard are featured alongside classic songs from Wolfmother, Offspring, Kiss, Michael

Jackson, Green Day and Nirvana. Aussie artists don’t miss the Contraband treatment either with Australian Crawl, Baby Animals, Birds of Tokyo and Sam Sparro all performed to perfection. Always delivering the ultimate night of entertainment with a fan

base that grows exponentially with each gig, this is an act that won’t disappoint. Catch them at the Tewantin Noosa RSL in the Diggers Bar from 8pm on Friday 18 September - free for members and only $10 for non-members. Tickets available from reception or dial’n’charge on 5447 1766.

Dimity on fire in California who rides them all, a red-hot longboarder and finless surfer as well as a shortboard pro. But Dimity has been a battler since she qualified for the tour, showing flashes of brilliance but also dipping out early too often, and struggling to keep up in the rankings. Going into the Swatch, she was sitting at 16, with four events to come, and needing to make top 10 to automatically requalify. Well down on the qualifying tour rankings too, it didn’t look good. And then, on a glorious fall Saturday at Lowers, she took out title contender Sally Fitzgibbons to move into the semis, her best result of the year. As I write, the

It’s a tough game, the women’s tour, with only a fraction of the money of the men’s tour on offer, and middle-rankers chewing through that in airfares. Not quite in the top echelon yet, Dimity has limited sponsorship and her winnings for the year so far are less than $60,000. Let’s hope a big result at Trestles changes all of that, and keeps her on the tour. Kelly Slater and the four-point punt It was the judging decision heard around the world! Kelly Slater, 43, the greatest surfer in history, hit the water running at Trestles for his round five clash against Mick Fanning, knowing that he had to take the Aussie down to keep his hopes alive for a 12th world title. Fanning and Slater have had some monumental heats over the years, with the results fairly even, but normally you’d back Kelly to beat Mick at Lowers, a high performance A-frame where he’s produced so many wins over his storied career. But Slater is a thinking surfer, and last Saturday he paddled out knowing that his point of difference over Fanning was his superior air game, and his ability to excite the crowd. Rather than ride rail for rail with Mick, he paddled to the left and took off late on a crumbling set wave. What happened next is difficult to describe. Even when you rewind the video, it’s hard to know what exactly happened. Slater stalled at the bottom, then stepped on the gas into his turn and exploded through the lip into a massive punted air reverse. The huge San Clemente crowd held their breath as he brought it down to land, and then the unthinkable happened. Slater and his board became unglued and both were free-falling at jaunty angles. He had blown the most radical manoeuvre of the event. But wait! The champ grabs the rail in midair, tries to set it under him, then lands heavily on the deck with his knees, then belly, smashing the board in two places. Then, in the midst of the exploding foam, he finds his feet again, powers off the bottom and flips a casual 360-degree turn to finish the wave. The crowd, admittedly partisan, goes

berserk. Watching at home, I go berserk too! Sitting in their not-so-ivory tower, on the gravelly strip next to the railroad tracks, the World Surf League judges consider what they have seen - surfing history in the making - and tap their scores into their handheld computers. They give Slater the low-average score of 4.17. Now it’s time for social media to go berserk! I have run world tour surfing events and worked closely with the judges, so I don’t want to join the squadrons of armchair judges who get quite hostile and personal in their dissent on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Judging the biggest events in surfing is not an easy job and, contrary to popular misconception, it doesn’t pay a motza. I feel for these blokes, but really ... Did they see what the world saw? Okay, you can pull out the manual and quote the bit about power and flow, and deem that the manoeuvre was not completed, and you can disregard the fact that even without the manoeuvre, Slater rode the wave extremely well, but can you call that low-average! The ramifications of that textbook reading of the rules could be enormous. Slater put up a fight, but it was really all Fanning after that. A younger Kelly might have had a piece of the judges during the post-heat interview, but for years now he has been the voice of reason and positivity in the face of a negative result. He took the party line - “didn’t complete the manoueuvre, didn’t get the score” but he conceded that he was now out of title contention, then dropped a quiet bombshell. He’ll skip the next leg in Europe, citing “niggling injuries”. Kelly is too great an athlete to go out on a bum note, but that 4.17 could be the beginning of the end of an era. Madam Chair And speaking of ends of eras, Noosa’s Norm Innis steps down this week after a stellar reign as chair of surfing’s national governing body, Surfing Australia. Norm and CEO Andrew Stark have presided over a period of huge change and dramatic growth at SA, and now the Noosa connection will be kept alive as our Festival of Surfing ambassador and eighttimes world champion Layne Beachley takes the chair. Well played, Norm, and good luck, LB!

LIVETODAY

Show shows the Anzac spirit WET weather didn’t dampen the spirits of locals who turned out in droves for the 106th annual Noosa Country Show at Pomona Showgrounds. Held over two days on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September, organisers of this year’s show said there was something for everyone. Few country shows have stood the test of time as well as Noosa and the Pomona showground is still the hub of the community, in the town where Noosa Shire was originally formed so many years ago. For two full days, the main arena was a hive of activity with horses and people of all ages showing off what they have, with riders coming from all over regional Queensland to enter - with some as young as five years old. As with all good shows there was sideshow alley, rides of all kinds and food as far as the eye could see, while a massive selection of different goodies meant show-goers

were spoiled for choice. While the general numbers were down a little from 2014 because of the rain, showgoers were happy and right into the spirit of the two-day celebration. Noosa Country Show president Perene Barker said she was delighted with the show and the efforts of so few for so many over the two days. “It’s been a real labour of love, but we’re very happy with the way it all came together,” Perene said. “We’re a new committee and a small one at that, but we’re thrilled with the program we were able to assemble. I really want to thank this year’s committee for their incredible efforts, allowing us to showcase the very best of Noosa Country to so many. “We have to thank our many sponsors with Noosa Council, Geoff Edwards and the team at Bendigo Bank, Pomona Caravan Park and Nielsen’s Quality Gravels, Claytons Towing, Cronin’s

Excavations to name just a few. Events like these simply don’t happen without this sort of support and we’re very grateful.” Noosa Country Show remains one of Queensland’s premier traditional country shows and this year the show honoured the 100th year of Anzac. The Grand Parade on both days featured the 2nd and 5th Lighthorse Brigades, Noosa Navy Cadets, Pomona Museum giving the community one of its last opportunities to commemorate the centenary milestone. When the sun went down, the partying started, with Dallas Frasca, Swanee, Steve Hart and the All Stars and Kevin Barker and the Beagle Babes on Friday night, and the Rodeo, Smokin’ Mirrors topped it all off the following night. For those who missed the 106th installment of this great community get-together, plan to get along in 2016.

This year the show commemorated 100 years of Anzac with a special parade and free entry for veterans.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Get up close and personal with the whales these school holidays.

Have a whale of a time IF you’re looking to keep the whole family entertained these school holidays, why not jump on the shuttle and head off for a day of whale watching. Whale One, Mooloolaba, is having a bumper season so come and join the team on board for a whale of a time. The Humpback Whales are the most predominant whale species passing the Sunshine Coast at this time of year. Naturally curious, they are known as the ac-

robats of the sea and perform many tricks including breaching (jumping out of the water) which is the most amazing sight. They live for about 45-50 years and about 20,000 migrate past local shores every year making an exceptionally long journey between their feeding grounds in the Southern Ocean and their breeding grounds in the tropics. They can travel as fast as 8km/h but on their long migration will only travel about

1.6km/h, choosing to rest and socialise along the way. To make the most of the bumper season, Whale One is offering a 50 per cent discount on all cruises and a super School Holiday Special for the early risers with the 7am cruise for just $29 for children (4-14 years) and $49 for adults. Don’t miss out on this bucket list experience. Phone Whale One on 1300 whale1 (942 531) for more information.

Your pets in good hands THE holiday season is just around the corner, so now is the time to start planning where your furry friends will be spending their break while you’re away. Kennels are a great place for dogs to enjoy a sociable holiday but not every pooch settles into the often hectic environment of a large kennel. If a kennel isn’t your pet’s thing, Small Pawz Bed and Biscuits retreat is an ideal petminding service for small and elderly dogs who might not settle well in kennels.

After years of experience with pet-minding in the UK and throughout Australia, Jean Leigh has settled in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and now offers a unique home from home for your pet with the Bed and Biscuits pet retreat. “Many dogs don’t settle well in kennels and coming to us offers peace of mind to owners and a safe haven as part of our family,” she said. Jean can cater for just one night or a weekend, as well as small to medium dogs and elderly dogs who need extra care.

Jean also offers a home visit service where she can walk, feed and play with your pooch if you are away, as well as put out the bins, water the plants and bring in the mail.

Small animals such as rabbits, cats, chickens and caged birds can also be catered for. For more information or to book your pet in, phone Jean on 0435 521 962.

IT was a gourmet affair at Peppers Noosa Resort and Villas last Thursday when renowned local chef Matt Golinksi teamed with Peppers chef Michael Jenkins and Shane Bailey from Noosa Boathouse to officially welcome Peppers to Noosa. Tourism industry identities, meeting and event planners, wholesalers, OTAs and corporate clients were treated to a local produce-led menu featuring spanner crab, Mooloolaba prawns, Gympie beef, Kenilworth yoghurt and Cooloola berries complemented by Vasse Felix wines. Peppers took over management of the resort - formerly part of the Outrigger group - in July and general manager Steve McPharlin said the team had a firm focus on changes to View Restaurant’s food and beverage offerings. “Locals and guests can look forward to a new menu launching late September that combines modern Australian with Japanese and Asian influences,” he said. “There will be changes to View Restaurant’s decor over the coming months and a new bar set-up that will take full advantage of the panoramic views over Laguna Bay.” The lunch took place on the terrace of View Restaurant - a multipurpose space accommodating around 100 guests and used for special occasions or weddings - themed in a garden style setting with trestle tables and native flower centre pieces by First Class Functions. Local food identity Matt Golinski said food and wine was such an intrin-

Spring into the sunshine Stop using soap - despite looking innocent and smelling great, soap can actually be quite harsh on your skin leaving it dry. Swap to a body wash that is free from chemicals, is organic and has added ingredients to soften your skin.

SPRING is well and truly here so it’s time to get your skin ready for the warmer weather, higher hemlines and shorter sleeves. Get rid of dry elbows, knees and ankles and spend some time looking after your skin to make sure you’re safe in the sun this season. Here are a few quick tips to get you on your way.

Slip, Slop, Slap - Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, so it’s important to look after your skin when you’re heading out into the sun and the best news is it’s easy to do. From getting ready in the morning to enjoying a day on the beach, applying sunscreen has become a simple task. Most good-quality foundations include sunscreen, so popping on your foundation already adds a layer of protection. If you prefer to go au naturel, then tinted moisturisers or face-specific sunscreens can give your skin the added protection. Big floppy hats are in style, so there’s never been a better time to pop one on before you head out into the sun. Don’t forget to wear a pair of Cancer Council approved sunglasses, a fabulous tunic to protect your shoulders and you’re ready for the beach.

Vanish Dry Skin - covering your skin throughout winter is a great way to hide dry skin, but when it comes to spring, it’s time to address the issue. Dry weather throughout winter dries out skin and can leave it flaky and scaly. Fight back with a gentle exfoliation using a product such as an oil-based salt or coffee scrub. After exfoliating, massage in a rich, thick body butter to add muchneeded moisture back into the skin. Make sure you concentrate on trouble areas such as elbows, knees and ankles.

Right spirit, in right fight By SAM KRUSHKA (RESERVES COACH) LAST week, the Noosa Tigers reserves squad returned to Burpengary for the grand final against Mayne. After a perfect preparation during the week the team was ready for the challenge that lay ahead. We played the windy conditions well in the first quarter and were well on top in the stoppages, but the second quarter was an arm wrestle and we held a small lead at half time thanks to Zac Smith’s three first-half goals. We continued our good form in the third quarter leading by 16 points until the momentum shifted with Mayne

being awarded some very dubious free kicks in key areas of the ground resulting in goals. The Tigers began the last quarter with two players down and another two heavily impacted by injury, but in true Tiger style this didn’t affect our effort with all players continually putting their bodies on the line with effort after effort. Despite all our efforts we could not put a goal on the board in the last quarter, while Mayne kicked two goals to run out winners by 15 points. Best players were led by joint players of the finals Mitch Danahay and Jack Tickner as well as Wayne Wilson and Zac Smith while

Nathan Winter, despite heavy tagging tactics, never gave up for his team. Although the result did not go our way, all 22 players and the rest of the squad should hold their heads high for the way they performed in the big game and the season as a whole, showing great improvement in attitude and effort along the way. I would like to thank the Noosa Tigers football community for the way they have supported us throughout the year. I would also like to thank the players for their commitment this year. Let’s use this loss to spur us on to bigger and better things next year.

When the river delivers By JACK MANGROVE WITH the wind still blowing, offshore anglers opted for the river last week. The Noosa River is a consistent performer and has again come up with the goods. The mouth of the river has been productive with some great reports of trevally, bream, tailor and school jew. Woods Bays has had good sized giant trevally, golden trevally and the odd golden have all been accounted for over the last week. The back of the sound and the area up from the Tewantin boat ramp have also seen a far bit of trevally action. If flathead are what you are chasing, Weyba Creek has produced some nice sized lizards on the run-out tide. Soft plastic worked slowly across the bottom has been most successful. Up river, Johns landing continues to produce quality jacks - live baits and suspending lures are doing most of the damage. The dog beach and the frying pan has been very productive for quality whiting and flathead. Live bloodworms, pealed prawns and yabbies have all been doing the job. For sand lovers, the beaches have been fishing a treat, whiting, dart and bream have all been

inhabiting the closer gutters, a fish first thing in the morning has been the go. For those chasing the larger fish like jew and tailor, that bigger evening tide has been perfect. Doing a bit of recon is worth the effort when it comes to spotting gutters, heading up the beach on the low tide not only makes it easier to spot those gutters, it also gives you the opportunity to pull a few worms and collect some pippies. The southern beaches have also been coming up with the goods, in fact a nice jew was taken on worms down that way last weekend. With the wind being up for most of the last week, offshore reports have been mostly from the larger charter vessels. Even with the sloppy conditions and winds to 20 knots, the anglers that were on board got some great results. North Reef was the main destination with good results - pearl perch, snapper, traglin jew, venus tusk fish, moses perch and spangled emperor all made their way onto the boats. Smaller boat tended to hang on the closer reefs with some quality long tail tuna coming from Sunshine reef on floater baits. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

Dan Wicher with the 55cm giant trevally he caught.

Canberra comp for our Jyah JYAH Seymour-Poad led the way with two gold medals as the Noosa Swim Club members excelled at this year’s Queensland Winter Swimming Championships held last week. Jyah won gold medal in the 16 years’ 100m and 200m Freestyle with huge personal best times of 50.4sec and 1min 50.9 sec. Jyah also out-swam the 17 and 18 year categories in both these events, and won bronze in the 50m Fly and finished a narrow 4th in the 50m Freestyle. Through this success Jyah has qualified for the Queensland State team to compete in the National interstate meet in Canberra next month. Shailee Finney placed in the top 10 in the 16 years 200m, 400m and 800m Freestyle events, again with three personal bests, while her sister Brooke continued the best times rolling with her efforts in the 18 years 50m and 100m Freestyle. Talisa Brady placed in the 14 years 100m, 200m and 400m free-

Noosa Aquatic Centre has a successful squad program run by experienced Noosa Swim Squads coaches; John Rodgers (JR), Graeme Brewer (BREW) and Sally Evans (SALL).

WITH a hiatus in between softball seasons, Noosa softball players switch to the representive honours with the Queensland School Boys and Girls titles being played last week. Noosa had a number of kids playing for the Sunshine Coast who all did well but three, Amaya Foxover, Rylee Read and Ethan Lewis, were selected for Queensland. Jack Murray and Laucke Cruice also had good tournaments while Jasmine Murray missed the tournament with injury. This brings Noosa’s current Queensland crop of players to eight between school and club. This week is the State Under 17 titles at Toowoomba with seven players representing as pick-ups or in a combined team again. The Noosa association wish them well and hope to get a few more picked for Queensland. The new season starts on 17 October and players can play for Dodgers, Redsox or Slammers. NOOSA Tigers player Nick Hill has taken out both the seniors best-and-fairest award and the player-ofthe-year award at the Tigers’ awards day on Sunday. Held at the Tigers’ Weyba Road home ground, the awards ceremony is a chance to recognise and celebrate the players who have put in a stellar effort throughout the season. Hill took out fifth place in the QFA seniors bestand-fairest last week, and this week 117 votes secured him the local best-and-fairest award while 35 votes secured him the title of the Sandcastles Noosa/ Noosa Today player-of-the-year award. In the player-of-the-year award, Hill was closely followed by Robert Copeland with 29 votes, Zach McDonald with 24 votes, Shane Davis with 23 votes and Gary Wallace with 15 votes. Also a winner was Nathan Winter, fresh from his win as the QFA reserves best-and-fairest last week, Winter won the reserves best-and-fairest for the Tigers with 124 votes at this week’s award ceremony. Winter was followed by Jack Tickner with 58 votes, Jake Fulton with 55 votes, Matt Gray with 47 votes and Matt Deans with 37 votes to round out the top five. The Tigers will now hold their official presentation night at the Weyba Road clubrooms on Saturday 26 September.

Played with a passion THE Noosaville State School hosted the annual Brent Moloney Cup last Thursday (10 September) with the home team coming out victors. The AFL game was held between Noosaville State School and St Thomas More Primary School, and is a fun way for the two schools to come together and share their passion for the game. The game ran from 11.30am to 12.30pm, with the final score Noosaville State School 9.7.61 to St Thomas More 5.6.36. Sponsored by the Tewantin Noosa RSL, the game is hosted by ex-Brisbane Lions player and Noosa tiger Brent Moloney, who also holds an academy for aspiring AFL players to learn leadership skills and develop football skills. Best played on ground for St Thomas More was Hunter Smith, while Tallis Buntain took out the honour for Noosaville State School.

What a way to win it back! By BRIAN STOCKWELL DOWN 2-1 with about five minutes to go in your 11th straight soccer grand final, playing on a field just big enough for 12 year olds, you probably would be excused for chalking this one up to experience and going down gracefully. But that was not the case on Friday night when veteran duo Michael Shepherd and Steve Cooksey combined in the over-35 grand-final. Just as they done for 10 consecutive years before, the two led from the back. It took a perfectly weighted free kick from 35 yards out from Mick Shepherd to level the scores before the end of regular time. Finding his range, Shepherd scored a hattrick, but it was a whole team performance for the full 120 minutes. Going in to extra time against a determined Coolum side, Noosa lifted - and after another 30 minutes walked away with their fourth consecutive championship and a comprehensive 6-2 win. The Fourth Division had their chance at glory in the next game. Thanks to a few nimble fellows with good ball skills, Noosa quickly adjusted to the small field conditions, unlike their highly fancied rivals Kawana. It was the Lions’ tall timber Tavish Patterson who opened the scoring, timing a header from the corner perfectly. Not too long after Kawana levelled. It took until after the 80th minute for a great run and shot by Nick Bloxsome to seal the championship for Noosa. Reaching the grand final in their first year as a squad, Noosa Coastal Women could not repeat their semi-final heroics against Cooroora. The Cooroora women - who only lost twice

The Noosa Lions under-17 (2) side after their victory. all season (both times to Noosa) - were deserved champions with a 4-0 win. Noosa supporters were spread thinly on Saturday morning as the grand-final of three junior sides, under-14 (1) boys and girls and under-13 (2) boys, all kicked off at 9am. It turned out to be the witching hour for Noosa with all three sides going down. The under-14 (1) boys would have to be the unluckiest side on the day being clearly the bet-

goalie to deny Noosa the championship. The last junior game of the day saw Noosa under-17 (2) side come up against Kawana. This was an end-to-end pitched battle which saw striker Lucas Van de Steer come on after 20 minutes and slot the only goal of the game. A well-deserved championship to a side that grew in confidence as the season progressed under coach Craig Thomson.

WITH the weather reasonably stable all of our bowls events were held this week. Wednesday Neilsens Sponsored Mixed Triples - with quite a few of our ladies and men players away not as many takers for this game however for those who played the standard was very high. Winners on the day were the pairs team of Daryl Millar and Elizabeth Dewhirst with runners-up Jeannie Price, Glenda Rohde and Carol Broadbent. The jackpot was not won and carries over to the October game. Thursday handicapped singles - again only a small number on the green - with the wins going to Curly Greig and Charlie Dewhirst. Friday Twilight Bowls again proved a winner with the rain only stopping play for a few minutes. The green was running well and there were some big wins and some big losses. Winners of the game were Shane Luppi and Veronis O’Connor with +20; runners-up were Glenn Patterson and Walter Horn +17. Great to see Walter completely recovered from his recent operation and back playing in fine form. Pennants on Saturday our team travelled to Cooloola Coast. Unfortunately we were not able to pull off the match going down by seven shots. Although Bob Schofield’s team won their game the teams skipped by Mel Hobbins and Trevor Walsh could not get across the line. The last match will be played against Albert Club and even with a win our men’s team will be unable to win a flag this year.

Sunday Mixed Fours Championship - and what a great game between two very evenly placed teams. Judy Muir, Daryl Millar, Tina Camp and skip Keith Muir against Sheena Millar, Glenda Rohde, Russell Murray and skip Mel Hobbins. Beautiful Sunday morning for the competition and with play from both teams evenly matched it was always going to be a close game. Around the 16th end with the scores fairly even, Mel’s team picked up four points which changed the definition of the game giving Mel’s team the victory 21-16. Final next Sunday with Mel’s team playing against Gary Cornell, Bill Alford, Gaye Bible and skip Veronis O’Connor. This should be a great match! Don’t forget to put your name on the board for Thursday 17 September Ausroads Open Pairs. Also nominations are being called next week for Championship Mixed Triples.

It’s race time for yachties NOOSA Yacht and Rowing Club was well represented in North Queensland recently at both Airlie Beach Race Week and Hamilton Island Race Week, several yachts and a diverse group of skippers and crew who made the annual pilgrimage north. Yachts and their crews travel from all over Australia to attend the racing each year and this year totalled 202 entries. All Noosa yachts performed well with podium finishes in their divisions which is an excellent result with such quality competition. Hamilton Island Race Week is a high profile event attended by such notable yachts as “Wild Oats” and “Alive” for a full week of racing, fun and festivities and enjoys a lot of media coverage. The format is three days of racing around the beautiful Whitsunday Islands, partying every night, one day off to “rest” and then another three days of racing. “Wide Load,” a Young 11 cruiser/racer, was the only keel boat to represent Noosa and raced with a crew of six according to owners/skipper Elaine Williams and Allan McClintock. “We were very happy with her performance and our Noosa crew and we all had an amazing time,” they said. “We will probably include Magnetic Island Race Week to our itinerary for 2016.” Last year, the weather for Hamilton Island Race Week was very light but this year there was a bit more excitement on the race course with stronger conditions. “Wide Load” sustained damage to her sails, but another of the Noosa fleet “Rhumbo”, a Ross 780, lost her rudder and had to retire from

racing on day five. One of the youth sailors was aboard the racing multihull “Fantasia” which was involved in a start line collision in heavy conditions. The port bow was seriously damaged so the yacht also had to retire. With the help of our local Noosa boat builders at Noosa Marine, “Fantasia” was repaired overnight and able to compete again the next day. Now that all the competitors have returned to Noosa, they are back to racing every week on the beautiful Noosa River and competing at various local regattas. Upcoming events include the St Helena Cup in Brisbane and the Kingfisher Night series of races in Moreton Bay. The St Helena Cup is always well attended by Noosa yachts and sailors and this year will be no different. Last year Allan and Elaine with Noosa crew Tim Jones were part of the winning team on the Farr 1104 “Moonshine”. This year will see Allan and Elaine campaigning their new yacht "Wide Load", but they will still have all Noosa crew aboard. “Our team for the Night races will be all youth/young adult sailors from Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club which will be a fantastic way to promote Noosa and our club in particular,” Elaine said. “Noosa has one of the strongest youth sail programs and highest youth membership bases of any club in Australia. "Our young sailors are talented and very experienced for their ages, so we expect to be very competitive even against some of the bigger faster boats.”

Patrols resume as life savers go back to the beaches Between the

flags RON LANE

ON Saturday morning the lifeguards will once again hand control of Queensland beaches back to the volunteer life savers. The summer patrols are on again with Noosa Peregian and Sunshine working at full strength to maintain their record of no lives lost while members on patrol. For all our local clubs, it has been a busy winter with a heavy emphases placed on training for IRB crews. The competition and experience gained during the winter carnivals will come to fruition, and the major recipient of all these hours of training and travel will no doubt be those who come to visit our shores. We wish them welcome and safe bathing, and to remember whenever possible - bath between the flags. However, as with the start of every sumnoosa.starcommunity.com.au

mer season, we take the opportunity to remind those who choose to do the tourist walks through the beautiful National Park or into that Devils Playground known as Alexandria Bay, of a few safety rules. If you do choose to bath on an unpatrolled beach, don’t go in above your knees - and if you have children, please leave them on the beach. If on a walk you see people in trouble remember, don’t panic, ring triple-zero (000) and give the following information: location, details of incident (number of people and how far out) and remain where you are. By doing this, you can if necessary, wave a towel or shirt to attract the IRB crew's attention, thus assisting them in quickly finding the right location. For the visitor on the scenic walk, please feel free to talk to the duty life savers at Sunshine Beach and Main Beach Noosa before you go. This applies not only on our local beaches but also anywhere in Queensland, for our Red and Yellow Army is there for you and your family. They will be only too happy to

help with advice. At Sunshine Beach, they have the largest crew ever for their patrol rosters and once again these teams will be under control of the Sunshine Coast captain of the year for 2014/15 season Scott Summers. At Noosa the patrols will again be under the watchful eye of club captain Ian Widdicombe. Good to see the Noosa Club continuing with Surf Awareness Training. This week some 190 students from Iona College Brisbane, aged 12 and 13 years, are attending two three-day camps. One group of 100 worked Monday to Wednesday and the remaining 90 will work Wednesday to Friday. Their program will cover activities such as the surfboard, stand-up paddle boarding and cable skiing - all under the supervision of highly trained life savers. Well he is home and despite feeling slightly exhausted he is a very happy and proud young Australian Clubbie. His name is Lachlan Lans-

down and at the ripe old age of 19 years this Noosa life saver last month set the American surfing fraternity on its ear when he won the Catalina Classic Board Race (a 53km race, off the coast of Los Angles) in a time of 6 hours and 30 minutes. “I was told there were about 100 entrants but only three Aussies, so we were stoked that it was won by an Aussie,” he said with a laugh. “I was the only teenager to enter and by winning I have become the youngest to ever have their name engraved on the trophy.” As we talked it became quite apparent that despite his youth this young lifeguard possessed a determination well beyond his years. His contribution to his club is also outstanding. Surf sports director Peter French said: “At training sessions he is always one of the leaders; he is on the coaching panel for the JACs (Nippers) and has been a worker in the Seahorse Nippers right from the very start. A member to be proud of.”
