Scams hit elderly By PAUL MILLER SCAMMERS are preying on elderly migrants in the Geelong area, promising rebates in exchange for bank details. The latest in an ongoing list of scams against vulnerable local targets involves phone-callers claiming to be from the Federal Government. A woman, who declined

Fake feds offering ‘rebates’ to be identified, told the Independent she was visiting her elderly father who had just returned from hospital when the phone rang at his Geelong West home. The caller told the woman she was entitled to a $6000

rebate “for being overcharged for years”. The woman was concerned the caller was inquiring about her late mother and asked whether the call was a scam. The caller said the woman

could phone a supervisor on (02) 8091 3990 to verify the offer. The Independent’s call to the number was answered by a woman claiming to be from the Government and working in the finance ministry.

“We’re giving money back to people who have been overcharged,” said the woman, who named herself as Angelina Cooper. Ms Cooper, who had an Indian accent, said: “This is not a scam. People are getting money back after being overcharged”. Continued page 7

MIND OVER MATTER: Highton primary team members Elijah, Will, Claire, Flynn, Caitlin,Ruby and Nick are looking forward to their Tournament of Minds challenge in Sydney. 144343 Picture: REG RYAN

Highton kids’ mind games reach Australasian level By PAUL MILLAR STUDENTS from Highton Primary School will challenge some of the brightest minds in the Asia-Pacific region after winning a Tournament of Minds state final. The team of seven will take on schools from Hong Kong, Thailand, New Zealand, Singapore and other Australian states in the Australasian

championship at Sydney on 17 October. Principal Tony Gove said the school had reached the state finals three times from four attempts. “Now we’ve made it to the next level,” he said. The Tournament of Minds pits students against each other in intellectual challenges.

The region level’s first challenge has a spontaneous format, requiring students to answer questions immediately. The second requires the team to select a problem and develop a solution for demonstration through performance six weeks later. State finals teams must develop a solution of similar complexity but

within three hours. The Highton students were “confident, relaxed, well-prepared and went about their business” in the state final, Mr Gove said. “They didn’t spend a lot of time stressing about anything.” The students were looking forward to the challenge in Sydney, Mr Gove said.

A new break through in the way artiicial intelligence learns has occurred. While super computers that can plan and defeat human opponents in chess have been around for a long time, the engine that runs these programs has changed little. hese super computers rely on a method of brute force, considering all strategies and possible outcomes and playing the statistical best move over and over again. Famously, IBM’s Deep Blue super computer beat our Gary Kasparov nearly 20 years ago using this method. But Kasparov shouldn’t feel too bad, I once played chess against a taxidermied cat and lost.

WHAT’S the difference between opening and closing? Central Geelong’s Civic Car Park car park currently closes at 6pm most weeknights. But City Hall this week announced the car park would begin “opening later in response to increased night trade in Little Malop Street. The release went on to say the car park would trial extended opening hours to 11pm Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, midnight on Thursday and continue closing at midnight on Friday and Saturday. So it appears the car park will actually open at the same time but close later. It’s an open and shut case.

So what’s so nity about this new intelligence engine? It’s the way that it learns and evaluates the game of chess. It has not been given the positional data to sort through and make selections on the best of all the available moves, but rather, has developed it’s own set of moves based on actual play. he system uses a layered system of nodes in much the same way the human brain does, and these nodes change as required to adapt to changes in the game...

THE INDEPENDENT’S story last week on parking woes at Cunningham Pier has put the spotlight on another issue as well - trying to get out of the place. A service lane accessing Cunningham Pier also accesses an adjacent council car park, so every evening a glut of cars forms as drivers try to exit on to Western Beach Road. A keep-clear zone on the northern side of the road is often ignored by drivers and more motorists seem to be taking the foreshore drive option to traverse the city. The keep-clear zone needs to extend right across the road to give escaping pier motorists a better-than-even chance of being on their way without risking a fender bender.

GEELONG fashion students are busily putting finishing touches on their designs for a show in Geelong next month. Gordon Institute of TAFE’s 2015 fashion show will be the culmination of three years of study and work. The event gives students experience of participating in a “real fashion show with an audience of “industry experts“, Gordon said. Final-year student Bri Vogt was excited about showing off her work. “The end of the year is coming so quickly. I can’t wait to see our final collection. The New Geelong Designers Fashion Exhibition from 6 October to 9 October is open weekdays The show will begin 5.30pm on 13 October at Gordon Gallery.

THERE must have been a Holden Captiva convention (pictured) at Deakin University’s Waterfront campus this week. There they were, six cars of the same make and model all neatly lined up along the waterfront car park opposite the uni. Five were all white, with one black car among them, just to prove every family really does has a black sheep, or a black Captiva at least. Double Take had no idea the vehicle was so popular.

Dolphin death fear as trawler out after dark By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN PERMISSION for controversial factory trawler Geelong Star to resume night fishing has opponents fearing it will mean more dolphin deaths. Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) announced the lifting of the ban this week. The ban was initiated after the Geelong-based 95-metre factory fishing trawler killed eight dolphins and four seals in its first two trips. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson told federal parliament yesterday she was dismayed at the ban’s removal. She wanted the trawler banned altogether. “As dolphins feed predominantly at night, it’s almost certain that overturning this night ban will lead to more dolphin deaths,” Ms Henderson said.

“The trawler’s owner, Seafish Australia, has not been able to evidence that its marine mammal exclusion device is failsafe. “I don’t believe this is good enough and I’ll be seeking the urgent intervention of Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce.” Ms Henderson said the “significant opposition” in Corangamite to the trawler led to her organising a community rally with Barwon Heads builder Jason O’Neill on 25 October at Torquay. Stop the Trawler Alliance’s Jon Bryan said the existing management plan meant any further deaths might not be revealed. “There’s a lot of secrecy surrounding the trawler’s operations and the damage could go undetected. “AFMA has set up a process that fails to give the best coverage of what

occurs and that’s a problem. There’s no provision for underwater video. “We still haven’t got information on where and when the earlier dolphins were killed.” Mr Bryan said a condition stipulating a single dolphin death would result in the trawler being banned for six months from fishing in the area was inadequate. “It’s not a bad condition except we can’t be sure that dolphin deaths will be recorded. “It’s meaningless unless we can be sure of what’s happening. The system is set up so we can’t be sure of what is happening.” The Independent reported last month that WorkSafe had made several visits to Geelong Star to resolve “health and safety matters” after it was moved from Corio Quay to Point Henry’s Alcoa jetty.

Operators claimed the ship had moved to a “lower-cost berth” for “minor maintenance work”. AFMA said it lifted the ban because a “trigger-limit on dolphin mortalities” was in place. “Safeguards implemented to minimise the risk of dolphin interactions by Geelong Star include (a) barrier net, closures of high risk areas and not discharging biological material when gear is in the water.” Southen Pelagic Fishery chairman Grahame Turk said the ban had been “unnecessarily harsh” and “negatively impacted“ the fishery’s economic viability. “Reinstating night fishing is reinstating the status quo. Night fishing is a feature of every other trawl fishery in Australia and was part of the original management of this fishery.”

In brief Man missing POLICE have appealed for help to find missing Grovedale man Howard Jones. Victoria Police described him as thin, greyhaired, cleanly shaven and wearing a green jumper with a grey overcoat.

Refinery fined “EXCESS sulphur-dioxide” releases have cost Corio’s oil refinery operator an EPA fine. Viva Energy said it was fined for releases over its licence limit in May after two warnings from the EPA about sulphur-dioxide emissions earlier in the year.

Record target VETERAN Corey Enright could break the Cats’ games record after agreeing to play on in 2016. Enright, who said his body still “feels good” after 15 years with Geelong, needs to play 17 games to overtake Ian Nankervis’s 325 matches.

Top scout LARA’S Georgia Smith (pictured) has won a Queen’s Scout Award. Ms Smith’s group said she was the only Scout from the Geelong region to win the award this year and the first ever in Second Lara Scout Group’s 24 years of Scouting.

NDIS rolling THE National Disability Insurance Scheme will roll out to other Victorian regions after a successful trial in the Barwon region, according to Premier Daniel Andrews. Victoria had signed an “historic” bilateral agreement with Canberra to extend the NDIS to another 105,000 Victorians, he said.

$29m works A $29 MILLION refurbishment of Barwon Water’s Geelong offices has begun, Water Minister Lisa Neville has announced. The Ryrie Street office, built in 1977, would be “gutted and updated to meet modern standards”, she said.

Indoor titles just horseplay for Batesford equestrian By PAUL MILLAR THERE’S something easygoing and old-fashioned about a horse and carriage. But when Batesford’s Nicole Linic takes the reins it’s more likely to be a fast and furious ride. The 26-year-old added two more titles to her trophy cabinet when she won crowns at a recent Victorian Indoor Carriage

Driving Championship. The schoolteacher took out the Victorian Small Pony title at Kalkallo’s Broadhanger Equestrian Centre for the third year in a row on homebred ride Folly. She also tested ponies Chocolate and Buzz in their first competition, coming away victorious in the multiple horse and pony category. “It was special, winning with two

ponies in their first competition,” Ms Linic said. The sport is similar to one-day eventing, with cones and obstacles replacing jumps as contestants race against the clock. Ms Linic said the sport was in her family’s DNA, with her mother helping train the horses as they ran up to eight kilometres daily. “The horses just love the speed

ALL EARS: A Cochlear implant has helped Shirley Fifer and Patricia Mitchell do the things they love. 144454 Picture: JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

Ear this: pair implant good advice By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN SHIRLEY Fifer woke up deaf one morning. The 68-year-old keen golfer from Clifton Springs had lost her hearing overnight. “When I went to bed I could hear and when I woke up I couldn’t,” she said. “I did have some hearing problems in the time before that but nothing that made me think I would go deaf.” Shirley discovered she lost her hearing through Meniere’s disease, a condition that results in excess fluid in the inner-ear. Belmont’s Patricia Mitchell lost her hearing aged just 18 months when she contracted measles. Her hearing loss became gradually worse until she was finally diagnosed at age seven. “There’s still a lot of ignorance

about hearing loss,” Pat said. “It’s like deaf people are invisible because it’s not obvious and can be associated with being dumb.” Pat immersed herself in books and reading as a child to escape the hearing world, leading to a sense of isolation. But the world for both women changed about 18 months ago when they each received a Cochlear implant. The technology opened up the world of sound for both, although learning to hear again took time. “The brain doesn’t know what the new sounds are, so you need to retrain the brain,” Pat explained. “You’re introducing a new source of sounds to the brain through the implant rather than through the ear. The first sound I identified after getting the implant was a clock ticking.”

Shirley described the implant procedure as “quite simple”. “It’s just an overnight stay in hospital. The Royal Eye and Ear Hospital staff are angels on Earth.” About 29,000 Victorians aged over 45 are at risk of severe to profound hearing loss but new research has found that many Victorians still fail to have their hearing checked. Professor Graeme Clark, inventor and pioneer of the world’s first multi-channel cochlear implant nearly 40 years ago, said hearing loss affected people of all ages. “There’s nothing to be ashamed of,” he said. “We need to dispel the misconceptions and negative stereotypes around hearing loss. Now is a good time for people to think about their options and speak with a hearing care professional about their concerns.”

‘Funding recycled as schools neglected’, parliament told

State ‘failing schools in south’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IS IT new funding or not? That’s the question that has voters scratching their heads after the State Government claimed it had allocated an extra $8 million for local schools. A spokesperson for the Education Minister told the Independent the funding was in the budget but “unallocated and therefore constituted previously unannounced funding. But Liberal South Barwon MP Andrew Katos quickly con-

demned the announcement. Mr Katos this week went on the attack in Parliament over the issue, saying the government had neglected the South Barwon school community. “The Andrews Labor Government has broken its promise with regard to Armstrong Creek West Primary School, with no funding allocated to buy land or build the school in the 2015/2016 state budget. “The Napthine Government delivered for the Torquay community with the 2014 opening

of the $37.5 million Surf Coast Secondary College for 900 students, fulfilling our commitment to have full secondary education in Torquay. Mr Katos also raised concern over the delay by the Andrews Government to open the Torquay North Primary School. “The school was scheduled to have been operational at the start of 2017 but as yet not a sod has been turned, Mr Katos said. “The government is now saying that the school will be operational in term one of 2018.

“This is unacceptable as it places further pressure on Torquay P6 College with over 1025 pupils and Bellbrae Primary School with over 425 pupils. Mr Katos said the Napthine Government acquired land and made a budget allocation to construct primary schools at Torquay North, Armstrong Creek and to build the Armstrong Creek Special School. “These three schools were fully funded in the 2014/2015 Victorian state budget along with land purchased for a future new

secondary college in Armstrong Creek east. “Upgrades to Montpellier Primary School, $4.8 million, Barwon Heads Primary School, $3.4 million, and Roslyn Primary School, $2.2 million, were also all funded in the 2014/2015 Victorian budget. Mr Katos advised that work was about to commence at Montpellier Primary School with $4.8 million from the former Napthine Government for classroom upgrades. “Montpellier Primary School

was in the former Geelong electorate and over 11 years was neglected by the Labor Government, he said. “The Napthine Coalition also made election commitments of $3.96 million capital funding commitment to upgrade Bellaire Primary School, $6.4 million upgrade for Grovedale Secondary College, $1.135 million to Highton Primary School and $6.3 million to Belmont High School. Letters, page 13

Healing at art of the matter for new hospital display A UNIQUE confluence of Aboriginal art and Indigenous health will adorn the walls of Geelong’s major public hospital for patients and visitors alike. A partnership between hospital operator Barwon Health, City of Greater Geelong, Grovedale’s Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Lara’s Margoneet

Correctional Centre will develop the art display. Barwon Health acting chief Paul Cohen said the display at University Hospital Geelong was part of efforts to improve Aboriginal health outcomes. “Lining the walls with Aboriginal art provides a visual experience for visitors, Mr Cohen said.

“Culture is an important factor to consider in improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Barwon Health said the contributing artists had used stories with significant meaning to reflect health and healing in the artworks.

AN EXTRA $90,000 to float Geelong’s Christmas tree again this year will be worth it, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons. The council this week approved the funding increase to deliver the tree as the centrepiece of this year’s Christmas celebrations. The $90,000 will cover costs associated with installing, dismantling and storing the tree as well as measures to ensure public safety during nights of high visitation to the waterfront and central Geelong. More than $32,000 will be allocated to traffic management, increased security and additional public toilets on selected nights to cater for expected crowds. The additional money does not extend beyond this year’s festive season, leaving the long-term future of the tree in doubt. Cr Lyons said the tree delivered significant eco- AFLOAT: The tree lights nomic benefits. up last year. Last year it generated $2.4 million in media coverage and brought 250,000 people into central Geelong for an economic benefit of $18 million, he said. “It created a huge response on social media, with #GeelongChristmas attracting 79 million impressions on Twitter and two million impressions on Instagram. Cr Lyons said nearby businesses reported a spike in trade that created “120 extra jobs. The additional contract follows a supplier breaking its contract to store and install the tree each year, citing unexpectedly high costs.

Corangamite had benefitted from “many important investments” including funding for roads and jobs, she said. Ms Henderson holds Corangamite with a margin of less than four per cent. Reports this week said the Liberals feared losing Corangamite and other marginal seats based on pre-spill polls. Unions have been targeting Corangamite and other marginally-held coalition seats with campaigns against the Government’s China free-trade agreement and proposed university fee deregulation.

Three ‘stooges’ so far for ward By PAUL MILLAR VOTERS could find up to three stooges and a few laughs as candidates for Geelong’s Kildare show or hide their colours in the lead-up to the ward’s by-election. The Independent has heard that several candidates will be separated on political lines. Liberal MP Andrew Katos scoffed at Adrian Schonfelder’s declaration he was not politically aligned, saying Mr Schonfelder was a booth captain for the ALP

Political leanings emerge in ward by-election at the last election. “He claims to be politically unaligned but his actions and his Facebook page demonstrate that this is untrue,” Mr Katos said. Mr Schonfelder’s page is crammed with ’likes’ by Labor politicians. “I don’t mind if anyone chooses to stand as a Labor or Liberal candidate, just be open with the

electorate,” Mr Katos said. The Liberals are also likely to have several dummy candidates. Trent Sullivan, who is close to outgoing Liberal councillor Stretch Kontelj, showed his hand early. “I do believe a lot of Labor candidates are running but not showing their allegiance,” the treasurer for the Geelong Young

Liberals said. The real estate worker has latched onto a campaign issue early, fighting Telstra’s plan to install a tower in Western Cemetery. Mr Sullivan claimed Telstra was taking advantage of the absence of a sitting ward councillor in Kildare. Eleven candidates are in the

She was concerned the female caller knew her father’s address. “She spoke with authority and even gave me a number to call back to speak to her supervisor. I googled the number and there were complaints about scammers using that number.” A Consumer Affairs Victoria spokesperson warned of numerous government-agency scams. “People should be especially wary of this type of scam during tax time, as scammers often pose as representatives of the Australian Tax Office or the Department of Finance, claiming you’re entitled to a tax refund but for a fee.” “Remember, you’ll never have to pay to claim a tax return from the ATO. If you’re uncertain whether you’re being scammed, speak to friends or family or check independently.”

By PAUL MILLAR MOTHER Nature will embrace thousands of visitors as Anglesea comes in full bloom for its annual wildflower and art show this weekend. The coastal township with its spectacular scenery will put out its welcome mat both tomorrow and Sunday. Winsome Coutts said the show attracted many return visitors drawn back annually to see a stunning display of indigenous flowers that flourish in the area. “We have such a diverse range of local Australian flowers and orchids growing in the district, they really are stunning.” Ms Coutts said visitors were encouraged to take guided bus tours into the bushland. “It allows the visitors to really see the flowers and orchids in their natural environment.” The show also attracts families with art and craft exhibitions and activities for children, while indigenous plant sales were so popular that organisers were forced to draw on emergency supplies.

Koala cull check HUNDREDS of koalas face death in the Otways as the State Government prepares a new culling program. The government said it would begin to “assess the health” of up to 400 koalas next week, with unhealthy animals likely to be euthanased. The program was in response to an “overabundance” of koalas reducing their manna gum food source in the Otways, the government said.

running, including Socialist Alliance member Sue Bull, Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative co-chair Annette Xiberras and hairdresser Stacey Sellars, who admitted “political leanings” while declining to reveal their direction. Diversitat employee Sophia Shen said she was unaligned and pushing for more education funding, while youth worker Brad

Clarke described himself as politically in the middle and concerned about the partisan culture of councillors. Other contenders include former policeman Peter Murrihy, teacher’s aide Ellen Csar and Matt Podvinsek. Voting packs for the postal poll will be sent out by the month’s end. Mr Kontelj caused the byelection when he left Geelong for a job promotion in England.

Osborne plans to restore icon By PAUL MILLAR

PARK LIFE: Susan Allsop on the former shire depot site adjacent to Osborne House. 144365 Picture: REG RYAN

OSBORNE House, once an icon of Geelong’s maritime past, could be restored to former glory under an ambitious plan to lease out adjoining clifftop land. The prime site with bay views has become a weed and rabbit haven since its Shire of Corio Depot closed more than 20 years ago. But all that could change if a councillor’s initiative comes to fruition. State Tourism Minister John Eren met Cr Eddy Kontelj at the North Geelong site to discuss options for its historic buildings and under-used surrounds. Cr Kontelj has asked council officers to investigate how to lease off land at the depot, which Mr Eren described

as some of Australia's best-placed real estate. The site had potential for investors to upgrade and lease the depot as a quality dining area, Cr Kontelj said. “It’s right on the cliff so the potential is enormous but at the moment it's just barren land and needs to be cleared.” Lease revenue could be injected back into Osborne House to pay for renovations and routine maintenance, Cr Kontelj said. “I see this as a real win. We'd be using an asset to create revenue to provide funds. “I’ve also been encouraged by the minister’s enthusiasm to work with us on this important project.” Mr Eren said the site was outstanding but under-utilised. “It is one of the best pieces of land

that you could find anywhere in the country, the potential is astronomical,” said Mr Eren, whose seat of Lara includes North Geelong. “It's a council asset and we're in discussion with council at the moment. It's a wonderful asset and we believe it could be utilised in a better way and we hope these discussions can assist council.” Osborne Park Association secretary Susan Allsop said any successful proposal for the site would have to blend commercial enterprise and community organisations. “It’s a matter of bringing ideas together about what works and what does not,” Ms Allsop said. “Its location could not be bettered, it’s all useable space and it’s not rocket science or impossible.”

The letters were removed by painters in a cherry picker and the top letters were removed by abseilers. The project was driven by a team of 20 people and took four weeks to complete.

Viva Energy is planning to build a new crude oil tank located in its current tank farm on Station Street. Dithering Dan delays local school projects I READ with interest in last week’s Independent where Daniel Andrews tried to take credit for three new schools in the South Barwon electorate. This was completely false. The Armstrong Creek Primary School, Armstrong Creek Special School and Torquay North Primary School were all initiatives of the previous Coalition Government and were all funded in the 2014/2015 state budget. Due to the inaction and dithering of Daniel Andrews, Torquay North Primary School will now open one year later than scheduled in 2018 instead of 2017 as originally planned.

This incompetence will see additional pressure placed on Torquay P6 College, which has over 1000 students, and Bellbrae Primary School, approximately 425 students, both of which are struggling to cope with large student numbers. Given that Mr Andrews wants to call Victoria the education state, he also needs to explain why his 2014 election commitment to build the Armstrong Creek West Primary School has not been honoured. The Andrews Labor Government has no funding allocated to buy land and build the school. Andrew Katos MP Member for South Barwon

Yes, mayor MP ANDREW Katos is worried political opponents want Geelong’s mayor to look as bad as possible (Independent, 11 September). To paraphrase Sir Humphrey Appleby, I’ve never known a Geelong mayor who needed assistance to achieve that. M Dunn Norlane

Can’t see costing for tree RECENT newspaper reports about the Mayor’s iconic tree stated it required another $90,000 for refloating but they didn’t mention he wanted it another storey higher. It seems City of Greater Geelong (COGG) costings don’t include or reveal this to ratepayers. So how much will this tree really cost with its vertical extension added? Jeff Kennett stated some accurate evaluations of our COGG honchos but forgot to add he was responsible for amalgamations that landed us with them. DN Tomkins Herne Hill

Grammar lessons in jail ABJECT apologies will not suffice. It took a royal commission to uncover the rampant sexual abuse of students at Geelong Grammar. What does this say about the management of this socalled elite school? It has failed lamentably in its duty of care to students. All those responsible, whatever their age, should be charged and imprisoned upon conviction for their outrageous offences against minors in their care. Michael J Gamble Belmont

WILD about council women WITH 11 candidates standing in the Kildare byelection, electoral democracy is alive and well in Geelong and WILD (Women in Local Democracy) is encouraged that the majority are women. This contrasts markedly with the 2012 council election in which only two male candidates contested the seat. While City of Greater Geelong featured in the top 10 councils for female candidates, who comprised 42 per cent of the field, the 2012 election resulted in only 25 per cent of elected councillors being women, which was not only a zero increase but also against the statewide trend. The percentage of women councillors across Victoria increased in 2012 to 34 per cent, up from 29.8 per cent after the 2008 elections. WILD will survey all candidates in the Kildare by-election to assess their support for the Local Government Women’s Charter and its three principles that underpin good governance and healthy participatory local democracies: gender equity, diversity and active citizenship. The charter was endorsed by City of Greater Geelong in 2010. Sixty-seven Victorian councils, along with Victorian Local Governance Association, Municipal Association of Victoria and successive state governments, have also endorsed the charter, providing a strong foundation for progressing greater gender equality across Victoria. WILD hopes the six women candidates for Kildare will translate into the successful election of a new female councillor and reduce the gender gap on City of Greater Geelong’s council. Jennifer Wills Geelong WILD convener

Benefits up in smoke FEW WOULD have known about the Victorian Law Reform Commission’s “community consultation” in Geelong on medicinal marijuana. I accidentally stumbled across the consultation 10 minutes before it started in Geelong West Town Hall. The most interesting information was that thou-

sands of studies into marijuana had been conducted worldwide. In question time, I told presenter Dr Ian Freckelton QC that any problems with medicinal marijuana could be immediately sorted out if he could cite any adverse effects proven by the studies. He was unable to cite any but resumed his attempt at convincing the audience, many of whom had illegally medicated themselves and loved ones with great positive effects, that further study of medicinal marijuana’s efficacy was needed. Two days later I learned that the US Government had known of marijuana’s medicinal benefits for over four decades and had two worldwide patents on this most-beneficial of plants. It seems the US will fully exploit the lucrative possibilities of medicinal marijuana. Once a government legislates on medicinal marijuana it will effectively own all rights to it and be the financial beneficiary of its use. Government authorisation, with fees attached, obviously, would then be needed to use the product. If medicinal marijuana has no provable adverse effects then people should be able to use the plant freely. Any government-produced medicinal marijuana should also be sold to the public for minimal profit without exceptional-circumstances limitations. Marijuana is God-given, not to be commandeered for any government’s commercial benefit. I am not a regular marijuana user. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West

Other side’s insane I WANT to clear up that I did not pull my fluoridecauses-autism claim (Letters, 4 September) from nowhere. A well-known Melbourne newspaper reported in black and white that some anti-fluoridation groups are peddling this unproven claim as fact. I have carefully read both sides of this story on websites. Perhaps those portraying me as ignorant (Letters, 11 September) should read the other side of the argument. One anti-fluoridation website claims that arsenic, lead and cyanide are in fluoride and goes even further to say China is dumping its waste into our fluoridated water. Yes, that sounds insane but I didn’t make it up, an anti-fluoridation group did, so perhaps you can see my point about some of these groups’ crazy scare tactics. I may only be 26 but I have enough sense to not blindly believe unproven facts. And of course dentists are still in business. People eat sugar-loaded food, guzzle soft drink, aren’t always 100 per cent up with their oral hygiene and fluoride can’t change that. Read the other side of the argument to see that the fluoridation issue is not as concrete as some antigroups would have us believe. If any of their claims were proven, why would fluoride be in our water? S Bridson Herne Hill

Fluoride on the brain TO MY knowledge only one person, not “groups”, has made the claim that fluoridation causes autism. That person likely confused autism with ADHD, which a 2015 study found in higher rates among children in USA states where a greater proportion of people received fluoridated water from public water supplies. The study concluded: “The relationship between fluoride exposure and ADHD warrants future study”. As for fluoride lowering IQ, Suzanne Bridson would be well-advised to do some research at fluoridealert.org/issues/health/brain/ after first noting that the USA National Research Council reported in 2006: “It is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain”. direct from the usa... a celebration of

Losi tuning up fundraiser gig By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT’S BEEN been a gradual learning curve for teacher and musician Izzy Losi. The Armstrong Creek singer/songwriter already has an impressive resume, including an inaugural Queenscliff Music Festival Scholarship in 2011 and winning the 2014 Telstra Road to Discovery. Losi has also just finishing up a master’s degree in music while embarking on new songwriting journeys for her next album. But, as is the case for all independent artists, finding the funds to live the musical dream is always the stumbling block. “It takes time to prove your place in the music world,” Losi conceded. “Yes, we’re doing it tough and when you do gigs they don’t pay you properly but it just stokes the fire in my belly.” Many musos have turned to online funding campaigns to get new albums off the ground. Losi said she had lauched a Pozzible campaign but preferred “doing something in person”. “You can get too tech these days. I’m excited to perform for people again.” That passion is behind a fundraising gig she and her band, the Auracles, will perform at Geelong Wintergarden on 26 September. Losi will channel the funds into producing, mixing, mastering and releasing a new EP, a follow-up to her 2012 debut, Outlast The Storm. With a swag of “killer new songs”, she hoped the new EP would garner wider attention. “The eight new songs are more mature, exploring some darker themes, with a bit more of a rock feel, more of a harder edge. “I tend to concentrate on the lyric and use the

The exclusive, up-close-and-intimate launch event will include an exclusive preview of Losi’s newest and previously unheard compositions. Other fundraising activities on the night will include a silent auction of various packages, including a chance to be involved in the recording process and an exclusive vinyl version of the new record. Losi said more information and tickets were available from izzylosi.com.

Two Kates: The Katering Show being filmed.

Kate’s web win By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A WEB series starring Geelong comedian Kate McLennan has won state funding to continue filming. McLennan’s The Katering Show is one of seven Victorian film, television and online projects to receive production investment funds from State Government. The Katering Show stars McLennan and Kate McCartney as fictional celebrity chefs who slice and dice the smorgasbord of reality cooking shows on the small screen. The galloping gourmands - frenemies for the main part tackle such issues as ethical eating, food porn, quitting sugar, Christmas and Mexican meals. They road-test pressure cookers and the celebrated Thermomix, generally with disastrous yet

miraculously achieved results. The six-episode first series garnered more than a million views when it first hit You Tube. “Something’s certainly happened. We don’t know just how but we’re very pleased,” McLennan told the Independent. “We had a ball writing the script - it was lots of fun taking swipes at trends in foodie culture. “It took a while to find the characters for it. We’ve been friends a long time and wanted to catch our natural rapport but also have our separate personalities. “The characters we’ve taken on are not too far from our own personalities.” Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley announced $455,226 in the latest round of Film Victoria funding for the various projects. “Collectively, these projects are expected to generate over

$4.5 million for the state, creating more than 300 employment opportunities for the local screen sector,” he said. The other projects included an animated web series, two feature films, a documentary on Victorian Olympic aerial skier Lydia Lassila, a murder-investigation drama and a project placing six “wellknown Australian” in Aboriginal communities. “A thriving screen sector is a crucial part of Victoria’s creative industries. Investing in a dynamic slate of new and established film, TV and online projects builds on our culture of innovation and excellence,” Mr Foley said. “This round will not only generate unique and exciting content for audiences, it means investment in local talent and skills and will provide more than 300 additional employment opportunities in Victoria’s screen industry.”

STAR POWER: Guy Pearce has called for entries to Geelongs’ newest film festival.

Disabled focus GEELONG’S most-famous movie star, Guy Pearce, wants local filmmakers to enter a new local film festival highlighting the contributions of disabled people. The Gateways Film Festival of Amazing Shorts (GAFFAS) is aimed at highlighting the positive contributions of the disabled to their families and the community. “I’m very excited about the launch of GAFFAS,” Pearce said. “This is a real chance for budding film makers to express their talents through a short film, showing us the many facets of life

for people with disabilities. “It’s an opportunity to celebrate diversity as well as perhaps highlight some of the hurdles faced in everyday life. “Films can be fun, moody, educational, inspirational ... anything you want really, so get your cameras rolling and let’s see what you’ve got.” Gateways Support Services chief Rosemary Malone said GAFFAS was an opportunity for experienced and novice filmmakers to share their untold stories. “Over the years we have met

many amazing people with stories of courage, humour, determination, self-belief, joy and friendship,” Malone said. “This is a chance for their stories to be told and I can’t wait to see them up on the big screen. “There are some great cash prizes for the winning films, so I encourage you to grab your camera and take up the challenge.” Entries for GAFFAS close on 6 November, with more information available at gateways.com. au.

INTRIGUE: The cast featuring in the Geelong production of An Inspector Calls.

Inspector Rep Sat 19th Sept in the Sports Bar from 8pm

By PAUL MILLAR IT MIGHT have been set in an industrial English mill town more than 100 years ago but JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls still touches a nerve with audiences around the world. Now theatre production company Geelong Rep is bringing the show from its setting in the living room of a wealthy, classconscious family to Woodbin Theatre. David Postill, who plays the aristocratic Gerald Croft, said the play triggered intrigue and made the audience think about how life choices affected others.

Great night out and prizes to be won!

“Many of the characters develop into unlikeable people during the play and the audience is left thinking about the choices that people make,” he said. “It’s thought-provoking, it triggers intrigue.” The plot centres around the apparent suicide of a young working-class woman by drinking disinfectant. The plot reveals how each member of Croft family could have somehow been involved in her death. The play’s message evolves after a mysterious inspector interrupts celebratory drinks at Croft’s engagement before interrogating

Spring is in the air and it’s time to celebrate... Grab your Routleys Party Pies today!

FOR more than 60 years Routley’s Bakery has been synonymous with this region – a local family providing beautiful baked goods for local Victor Routley families. Vic and Verna Routley first started baking in 1947. The Original Routleys Store was on Nelson Place in Williamstown though Vic and Verna both grew up in Geelong. After the War in 1947 the couple moved to Williamstown, where Vic worked as a baker before deciding to buy the shop where he had been working and operating Victor Routley it together. Working “days” began at midnight, when they stoked up their big brick lined “scotch” oven, fired with wood or briquettes. They would put the pies in first, when the oven was hottest, followed by cakes and then the delicate sponges.

September Special

In 1971, Vic and Verna Verna Routley handed on the baton to their son Lawrie and his wife Anne, who have expanded the business with the help of their five children (Simon, Penny, Michael, Kate and Sam) to what it is today.

and its surrounds, with attractions geared to suit families. The Koori Cultural Centre on the grounds takes visitors beyond the history of the lighthouse with guides explaining the finer points of bush medicine and tucker. “You really can take a step back into yesteryear, try cooking some damper, throw a boomerang, or paint abalone shells,” she said. The fresh air, roaming the historical precinct and the amazing views are certain to rev up an appetite and the lightkeeper’s kitchen stays with tradition, spe-

cialising in fine local produce from around the Otways. The lighthouse is still a striking standout. Built in 1848, after a series of shipwrecks cost hundreds of lives, it stands in defiance of the elements perched on cliffs, overlooking a wild expanse of water where the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait collide. Ms Goodlet says it’s also a great spot for whale watching or just wandering through the grounds taking in the sights, which include an historic telegraph station and WWII radar bunker.

Heart of the Great Ocean Walk

TRAVELERS from Europe once drew inspiration on sighting the Cape Otway lighthouse - now as one of the leading Great Ocean Road attractions visitors are inspired by the stunning views from the peak of the beacon. The light, for many, meant their long journey was drawing to a conclusion. These school holidays a trip to the tower and its historic surrounds takes you to a place that was once so isolated it took six months for supplies to arrive. Light station manager Tricia Goodlet said there was an ongoing fascination with the beacon

For two full hours, children will be entertained with warm-up games, bouldering and rock-climbing. Perfect for school-aged children, the sessions are fully supervised with experienced rock instructors. Business owner Richard Lodge, who has 23 years of climbing experience under his belt, celebrated the company’s 14th birthday this month. Richard says the response to the holiday seasons has been “fantastic” over the past 10 years. “Parents love that they can drop their kids off and go shopping down Pakington Street. Others just love sitting there with a latte while watching the kids have a climb.” Richard says parents also enjoy seeing their kids trying something different. With holiday sessions so popular, bookings are essential to secure a place. Kids Rock Holiday Sessions cost $20 a child, including the harness hire. Richard recommends purchasing a family pass if everyone wants to join in the fun. “They’re a great, affordable way for the whole family to experience the fun and excitement of indoor climbing.” The Rock Adventure Centre is open from noon to

Time for school holiday smiles WITH the school holidays fast approaching, it is very easy to be a bit more relaxed and fall behind in oral health routines. It is also not uncommon to see increased snacking on unhealthy food and drinks during the holidays. However, the school holidays may also be the ideal time to schedule routine dental visits. A few simple tips to staying focussed on dental health include: · Reinforce brushing for two minutes twice a day followed by flossing. · Stack pantry and fridge with

healthy snacks. Take time to teach kids about the damage that sugary drinks and sweets can do to their teeth. · Wear a mouthguard as part of any contact sport. · Schedule preventive dental visits. The good news is that children may be eligible for dental treatment up to $1000 under the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Schedule (CDBS) over a twoyear-period. Staff at Smile Care Dentists proudly support this scheme by bulk billing eligible children be-

tween two and 17 years of age. Those who are unsure about their eligibility can phone 5223 3255 and staff will be able to check. Children making their first visit will also receive a personalised certificate as a keepsake. To make it more rewarding for the kids, goodie bags with all the fun stuff are available. With all this and more, staff at Smile Care Dentists are sure to make children’s dental visits exciting. Phone now on 5223 3255.

LOW-IMPACT collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

Big range of vehicles for any purpose at Truck Car WHETHER it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.

Big fun in little league JUNIOR baseball will take on a definite American little league flavour with a new charter revolutionising the sport locally. Geelong Baycats Little League Baseball Charter president Larry Meager welcomed the change from the traditional club-based summer competitions. “The new league will focus on maximising participation and enjoyment,” Meager said. “This is an exciting development for junior baseball in Geelong and represents a great opportunity for all children to play and develop their baseball skills.” Meager said Geelong had a rich

history as an elite competition, developing international class players like Major League baseballers dual New York Yankees World Series Winner Graham Lloyd and San Diego Padres and Arizona State University National Championship pitcher Josh Spence. Geelong has also developed 10 players who have made it to American professional leagues as well as many others taking up college baseball scholarships, James Wood most recently. “There will be an opportunity for kids to join the Geelong Baycats charter development squads for both under-12 and under-14 teams playing in Melbourne,“ Meager said. “There’ll also be a Baycats All Star

team of 14 players selected from the charter competition to compete in the Victorian Junior League State Championships over the Australia Day long weekend. If the side wins the championships it will progress to the national championships and potentially represent Australia overseas.” Meager said games would be played on Wednesday nights and every second Sunday at Geelong’s top-level baseball complex in Grovedale, with training on the alternate Sunday. “Training will be in the form of clinics for kids to improve skills, with access to elite coaches. Playing this number of games is a fantastic opportunity for our children to develop their skills and have fun.”

The season opener is scheduled for 25 October before a break for Christmas and the grand final on 9 March. Meager encouraged new and prospective players to attend two Come and Try Days from 10am to midday on 1 and 12 October at Geelong Baseball Complex, oposite Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre. “Interested kids only need to bring a can-do attitude,” he said. “There’ll be representatives from all the current Geelong baseball cvlubs and from Geelong Junior Baseball Charter to help players get setup and allocated to a club.” Meager said anyone wanting more information could phone him on 0417 418 995.

One goal. WorkSafe’s goal is to help make workplaces safe, so that all the players, officials, volunteers and fans can be there every weekend, doing their bit for their club. Proud sponsors of Country Football and Netball for over a decade.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

APOLLO Bay again produced world-class southern bluefin tuna last week but in even greater numbers than previously. Hordes of anglers fished calm conditions off the town, with the biggest tuna take in 80m to 100m straight out from Cape Otway. Large skirted lures were effective, with anglers reporting multiple simultaneous hook-ups. Matt Alsop and Dylan Pace set a spread of skirted lures, quickly hooking a fish that escaped minutes later. They were soon on again, this time boating a 74.8kg tuna after a battle of one hour and 50 minutes. Paul Carson, Michael Jackson and Gavin Chivilo trolled similar ground to boat a tuna almost breaking the scales at 133.9kg on 24kg tackle. Without a harness, the trio was exhausted after a three-hour fight. Not all anglers sought tuna off Apollo Bay. Andrew Orchard fished a gummy shark spot with a neighbour, catching fish just over 1m each on salmon fillets. Snapper were available in good numbers in 40m off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. The change of the tide produced fish to 6.5kg, with the odd gummy shark making a welcome by-catch. Anglers targeted squid off St Leonards where size 3 jigs in white colourations worked well when fished in 3m to 4m. St Leonards also gave up reasonable amounts of King George whiting on pippies during the run-out tide. Clifton Springs hosted anglers seeking snapper but the going was tough. Fish to 7kg were taken, with after-dark best. Geoff Redmond tried Cunningham Pier on Monday morning, catching a bag of barracoota to 50cm on a Strike Pro lure. Geoff said he had to fish deep to entice bites. Freshwater fishing made a significant improvement as redfin and trout came on the chew. Kelvin Baldwin cast hard-body lures just below the old paper mill in the Barwon River, targeting redfin. He was surprised to instead land a well-conditioned 46cm brown trout. Bradley Cox cast Fish Arrow soft plastics at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, landing a healthy 44cm redfin that darted up and down the rock wall. The reservoir’s brown trout were a little quieter but some were still taken on mudeyes fished under floats. On Sunday Shaun Wills tried Bostock Reservoir, which has been a little quiet lately. Shaun managed to bank a brown trout of 1.65kg and 56cm on a pink Tassie Devil cast from the bank. The next week’s run of warm spring weather should allow anglers to chase large bluefin tuna off Apollo Bay, while freshwater anglers should keep focused on Wurdee Boluc Reservoir for redfin and trout.
