Disability Action Week has wrapped up in the Southern Downs this year with a range of events being held over a 10-day period. The Lions River Walk in Warwick on Thursday was just one event in a week where we are remembered to overcome any difference or misunderstanding we harbour in ourselves and always treat each other with respect. A RECENT patient survey from the Warwick Hospital has revealed that 92 per cent of respondents said the care they or their child received was “good or very good.” This comes on the back of the recent announcement that the hospital would go through a ten year transformation from small rural hospital to major regional facility. Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service (DDHHS) General Manager Rural Mr Michael Bishop chose not to answer questions on a

ten year plan or a need for further funding but said upgrades to the hospital were already underway. “Short-term infrastructure works at Warwick Hospital include a $230,000 project for flooring, upgrades to the dental clinic, dental administration corridor, emergency room, Hanlon, Philips, maternity and birthing wards, and areas of the nurses’ accommodation building,” he said. “Stage one is complete and stage two is expected to be finished next month.

“Other infrastructure works under the Backlog Maintenance and Rehabilitation Program include electrical upgrades. Mr Bishop said the process of upgrading the hospital would be ongoing. “DDHHS is also assessing longer term infrastructure needs through capital infrastructure planning studies. This process is ongoing,” he said. The hospital came under some criticism last month when Queensland Deputy State Coroner

John Lock presented his findings at the inquest into the death of Jasmyn Carter and found that staff inefficiency with alert systems at the hospital was in some part to blame for her death. Mr Bishop said the emergency care response rates at the hospital were above the national average. “From April to June this year, 1236 patients were admitted to Warwick Hospital, 2001 outpatient services were delivered, and 53 babies were born,” he said. Support for those in need By DANE LILLINGSTONE

John Boucher and other local Southern Downs firies will now be equally compensated.

Rural firies win right to equality By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Queensland Government has passed historic firefighter protection laws that provide compensation for a number of cancers that may be contracted in the course of their duties - and makes all types of firefighters equally compensated. Rural firefighters across the state will be celebrating the news after the originally proposed legislation had a stipulation that they attend 150 fires over five years to be eligible for onset cancer compensation. Local Southern Downs volunteer firefighter John Boucher has been doing the job in excess of 30 years and was elated at the outcome. “Isn’t that a win. That’s great to hear. I’m happy that they’ve come up with that compromise. We’re all volunteers and you know it’s nice to know we’ve got that backup,” Mr Boucher said. “I think for rural firefighters to have a level playing field with health issues, I think that’s great. It’s something we’ve never had, I don’t think a lot of the other officers would

have thought about it much, they do it for the love of the job.” The Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2015 was passed on 17 September and means all firefighters in the state will now be treated equally when it comes to compensation for dormant diseases they may contract at work. Treasurer and Minister for Industrial Relations Curtis Pitt said it would provide greater certainty in compensation coverage for Queensland firefighters. “These laws are a win for brave Queensland firies who put their lives on the line to keep the community safe,” Mr Pitt said. “They make it easier for firefighters to access compensation for work-related cancers, and that’s a great outcome. “It extends the same rights to volunteer firefighters as those enjoyed by fulltime and auxiliary firefighters who contract one of 12 specified work-related cancers.” However it is in stark contrast to the La-

bor Government’s view on the matter months ago. The government was forced to bow to pressure from the Opposition and 35,000 volunteer firefighters who felt the original compensation was not fair. Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg said it was a win for the Southern Downs. “Volunteer firefighters in my electorate of Southern Downs are the real winners today after Labor agreed to scrap the 150-fire quota,” Mr Springborg said. “Labor pushed for a fire quota that only volunteer firefighters must meet making them attend 150 fires before receiving workers compensation. “Only the LNP has been fighting to ensure every firefighter whether they are permanent, part-time, auxiliary or a volunteer rural firefighter should receive the same workers compensation. “It seems a small act to repay this sacrifice by ensuring fair workers compensation is in place if a firefighter suffers from a disease, including cancers, in the course of their employment.”

THE Advocacy and Support Centre (TASC) in Warwick has had a visit from Southern Downs MP and State Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg. Mr Springborg answered the call from the centre’s CEO Philippa Whitman to visit and learn about their services in the Southern Downs. The not-for-profit centre is the largest regional community legal service in Queensland. The centre, at 69 Guy Street, Warwick, also visits Stanthorpe and provides services to disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the region. They provide advocacy services, social workers and lawyers completely free. Mr Springborg said their services were an important part of the community. “I think Phillipa and the team do a fantastic job, the community legal centres are so highly regarded within the community and so highly regarded by government of all persuasions and that’s why they’re supported by public funding because they do help people who are the most marginalised and disadvantaged and that’s critically important,” he said. “This service can turn people’s lives around. “There has to be a place you can refer people to who have got nowhere else to go. Let’s make the community aware of what is in their community. “Just by raising awareness, it may be that we can offer assistance to somebody who doesn’t know

where to go at the moment.” Ms Whitman said their services were for anyone who was struggling. “I think it’s really important that people know they have a voice and that there’s someone there to support them if there in need,” she said. “Really it’s just about vulnerability or disability so if they’re financially vulnerable or if they have a disability or mental illness, we take it on. “We don’t really turn people away. But we can’t say we’re here for everyone because we really have to prioritise those marginalised people.” Ms Whitman said that while funding was restricted they never struggled. “There are restrictions around funding but we’re very lucky at TASC to be as well supported as we are and because we’ve been in existence for as long as we’ve been around we’ve got the capacity to take a few hits,” she said. “In a perfect world we would extend the services, be more visible, have more staff, but we’re doing what we can do and are very grateful for the support we’ve received to date. “Things are looking positive for the future too, we’ve had some additional funding to provide tenancy services in this region and we’re hopeful that will develop over the next couple of years.” Anyone in the Southern Downs community doing it tough is encouraged to contact the centre for free legal and advocacy services.

Team works in tourism By DANE LILLINGSTONE DESTINATION Southern Downs’ new Implementation Project Manager Tracy Dobie has settled into her new role and explained how the group will evolve tourism in the region. Tracy said that her role was to implement the TEAM tourism strategy from 2012, while her immediate job is overseeing the introduction of Destination Southern Downs membership across the region. In what will be a first for tourism operators in Warwick, the membership prospectus is expected to be released this week and outlines what Destination Southern Downs will be offering. Tracy said they were projecting for the next phase of Destination Southern Downs to be implemented over the next six to nine months, but their funding would rely on memberships. “Destination Southern Downs doesn’t have a lot of funding. The Southern Downs Regional Council has given us a grant,” she said. “To enable us to do what we need to do for the region, we’re going to need more money to market. “We want to be able to go outside the region and tell people what a great

place the Southern Downs is.” With the introduction of a paid tourism membership to Warwick for the first time, she admitted she did not know how it would turn out and warned that funding would not be sought from council. “Under current circumstances, no, it would be very hard to ask for more money,” she said. “By having a membership we can ask people to pay a fee. For the fee we will provide a service. Those services will involve marketing, assistance with event marketing and assistance with the visitor information centre.” Although Tracy said she had no previous experience in the tourism industry, she is a local to the region. “I grew up between Warwick and Stanthorpe. I left at 17 and I’ve always wanted to come home,” she said. Tracy said that since July, over 4000 people had come through the Warwick Visitor Information Centre. She also said they were a level one accredited centre. They are currently looking for more volunteers to ensure both the Stanthorpe and Warwick information centres can continue to remain open seven

questions over the Warwick and Stanthorpe divide, she said it was not an issue. “Why can’t they all work together?" she asked.

Thumbs up From page 1 “In August, 1745 people were seen in the hospital’s emergency department, with 98 per cent receiving treatment within four hours (well above the national standard to receive emergency care).” Mr Bishop said staff levels have been reviewed at the hospital and that they were happy with their current employment levels. “DDHHS recently reviewed staffing levels at Warwick Hospital and has had more clinical staff allocated, including three full-time equivalent doctors, particularly in the emergency department,” he said. “When benchmarked against other hospitals in the state, there are adequate staffing levels at Warwick Hospital.”

Former Warwick local released from jail

Warwick Hospital will continue expanding for the foreseeable future.

A 20-YEAR-OLD former Warwick High School student has been released from jail in Brisbane. He pleaded guilty to a wide range of offences. Brisbane District Court heard 18 charges for the man including breaching bail, assault, stealing and supplying methamphetamine. The court heard the man had been addicted to ice and his crimes were motivated by his addiction. He was sentenced to two and a half years' jail and has been released on parole.

THE 79-YEAR-OLD man reported missing on Monday September 21, has been confirmed dead. New South Wales police suspected on Tuesday the man was killed in a single-vehicle crash south of the NSW border. They first learnt of the incident on Monday around 10.45am when a passing motorist saw a Honda Jazz crashed down the embankment off Mt Lindsay Road, 45km north of Tenterfield.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Queensland Ambulance attended the scene and found the body of the driver. Further analysis confirmed the missing man to be Desmond Salmon. Police are still unsure at this stage when or why the accident occurred, but it is believed it could have happened as early as the day Mr Salmon went missing. Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon said the family were immediately concerned when he went missing, due to recent health concerns. 1189115-PB26-15

“Traitors to Australia” (Geoff Pickering letter, SFT, 17 September). You speak of Mr Turnbull being treacherous in regards to his defeat in a party ballot of Mr Abbott and quote a Roman consul from 63 BC; you conveniently forgot that it was Abbott who became the leader of the Liberal Party after being treacherous to his leader at the time, one Malcolm Turnbull. Tony Abbott’s tenure was pretty much over after a year, he was never an appropriate person to lead a modern forward thinking country like Australia. Chris Leamy, Wallangarra.

alty to the nation is determined is demonstrated by them passing legislation that will be detrimental to Australia’s long-term interest. Free trade agreements, settling more refugees and climate change treaties are examples where their disloyalty is magnified. They seem to be working flat out to undermine Australia at every opportunity. The new PM needs to be watched VERY CLOSELY as his track record is dubious to say the least. The more we learn of his documented and convoluted past the more questions we have to ask: “What are his real motives?” In the coming weeks let us be vigilant and keep both eyes on PM Mal. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

More treachery

Madness and misery

AFTER the past week’s drama - a drama with as much treachery and betrayal as a Shakespeare tragedy - it is interesting and helpful to see how our Queensland parliamentary representatives voted. It is something to bear in mind come the next general election and the position taken by our senators is of interest to all of us. Of the four Queensland Liberal senators, only Joanna Lindgren supported Tony Abbott. George Brandis, Ian Macdonald and James McGrath all supported Turnbull. Three Queensland Members of the House of Representatives supported Tony Abbott - Karen Andrews, Scott Bucholz and Peter Dutton. The other 10 Queensland Libs all sided with Turnbull. Speaking for myself, I am writing to thank Senator Lindgren and the three MPs. Rowan Shann, Warwick.

MANY Australians watching the madness of misery sweeping the world in 2015 hoped Australia was immune to it via our island state. Watching the hordes of arrogant interlopers demanding the European states accept them all without question was a warning to us all. They came, demanded and left behind in their wake, piles of rubbish and their host was to clean it up! As we saw these thankless tens of thousands of foreigners refusing to take no for an answer, we blessed the tranquility of governance Aussie style. Then came the astonishing removal of the outstanding Prime Minister, in a crazy act of torturous mindlessness. Prime Minister Tony Abbott will hopefully forgive the gang of 54, however this writer will not! As talkback programs allowed the voices of the people to vent their anger, one outstanding broadcaster gathered the names of 54 people who have got it so wrong! Thanks to the National Party our seat is not on the list, and Liberals will long be reminded of their choices come the next election, when booth workers in those 54 seats find better things to do with their time. Regardless, Australians must now live with the government in power and those deserters from their homelands should stay and live with plans to live with and correct their own governments. Too many have come here to change us to the places they left! Changes prove impossible for ungrateful, demanding people. Melba Morris, Allora.

Whose treachery?

Scott Squealed! SCOTT Morrison squealed that he was offered the Treasurer’s job and Deputy Prime Minister, if he would support ex-PM Tony in the leadership vote. Scott was under no obligation to admit this, and there’s no way to prove that it happened. But what it does indicate is that it is a stab in the back for Tony. This act of disloyalty in spilling the so-called beans, of his conversation with Tony, proves there’s minimal loyalty among politicians. They have little loyalty to each other and few loyalties to the nation. Can we trust any of them? Their disloy-

Donna George, front, event manager for ‘1000k’s 4 kids for Camp Quality’ with the ‘Fine Master’ cheering on some of the participant cyclists at Woodenbong Hotel.

Riding for the kids By JOYCE MARSH WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT WOODENBONG Hotel provided a warm and welcoming stopover for the Camp Quality’s ’1000k’s 4 Kids’ bicycle ride which came into Woodenbong on Saturday 5 September. The Newcastle based Camp Quality’s entourage consisted of 64 in the group, 34 of those were participating bicycle riders some of whom have children with cancer. This group had cycled from Dreamworld, staying overnight at Beaudesert and thence to Woodenbong. They were riding 100 kilometres per day on this 10 day venture to reach their goal of

1000 kilometres. It’s a fund-raiser for Camp Quality Newcastle to improve the lives of young cancer sufferers as Camp Quality cares for ages of 0-13 years and Canteen cares for 14-24 years. This is the fifth year of the event and their target for this year is $300,000. The riders must raise $4000 to qualify and the support crew have to raise $1000. A ‘Fine Master’ travels with the group and is assured of monetary rewards along the way by being able to fine people for misdemeanours. It costs $500,000 per annum to run Camp Quality Newcastle group with no Government funding to assist them.

The eight riding teams wore eight different colour co-ordinated tops with their generous sponsors names displayed. The preliminary reconnaissance had found Woodenbong Hotel more than capable of providing a fully catered and secure overnight stay, with host Tony Neylon, Mellissa Fellin and staff including James the new chef were up to the task. Donna George, event manager, has experienced 20 years with the fund-raising organisation firstly as a volunteer then becoming an employee. “The children are an inspiration by their acceptance, optimism, ability to have fun, embracing life and are so resilient,” Donna said.

2016 COUNCIL ELECTIONS • Due to the recent demise of council happenings in print, one must wonder how those who can’t logon or afford a smart phone are to know what Council is doing or not doing. • Whilst technology is the way of the future, information and communication should be readily available to all and not have to be searched for.

• The Southern Downs needs a cohesive front and a team representing all – de-amalgamation is not an option, it will not happen under the current State Government. Therefore we need to be united for the benefit of the whole community and not split by where we live.

• Further we need a Leader who doesn’t forget what day it is to get a pay rise and a Deputy who could and should have reminded him ! • We need representatives with a plan of action to increase economic development, increase private investment, increase employment opportunities, increase tourism activities and events, not just building the current ones, increase sporting events, a definite vision and most importantly be judged on their performance. • When considering your vote ask candidates “what is their plan and how are they going to achieve it”? • We need true representation – not lip service and happy snaps. • You, the voter have a choice – you can do something to make a difference! Bony Mountain rocks again By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Bony Mountain Music Festival has wrapped up for another year with a jam-packed weekend of entertainment. The festival had a bit of everything - country and folk music, Irish dancers, a Dungaree March tribute and a pirate cave. Local organiser and musician Norma O’Hara Murphy said it was a community effort. “It was just fabulous, the reports are that there was more there than last year,” she said. “We had the most amazing weekend. I think the Sunday program was, with the Dungaree March tribute almost 100 years to day, I think that really brought a lot more locals than normally come.” She said she would like to thank everyone involved and didn’t want to leave anyone out. Lawrence Springborg officially opened the festival on Saturday in its fifth year on Norma’s fifty acre property. Norma said it was about putting something on for the community and that locals could be proud of.

“It was a lifelong ambition of mine to start my own festival. When we found this property it was just perfect. With the space people can all have their own campfires and the mateship is a big thing,” she said. “I don’t believe in bringing in international artists because we need to support our local artists here.” Norma said a DVD from the festival would be available. “We have filmed a performance DVD of the festival this year and we hope it will be ready for Christmas. We’ve already got a lot of pre-orders,” she said. If you would like any more information on the festival or on how you can purchase the DVD you can visit http://www.bonymountainfolkfestival.com. As for next year, Norma said there wouldn’t be much of a break. “I’m going to start (planning) next week. It really takes up so much of my time. You’ve got to plan 12 months ahead to get the people you really want,” she said.

Tourism jumps TOURISM surged in Tenterfield last month with big numbers coming through the Tenterfield Visitor Information Centre. August welcomed 1376 visitors through the information centre looking for activities in the region. Of particular interest were Tenterfield’s national parks, scenic drives and museums. There was also interest in the location of caravan parks and conditions of roads - both locally and regionally. A large percentage of visitors came from Brisbane, Lismore and the Central Coast.

Tenterfield Shire Council Mayor Peter Petty said it was a showing of faith in the region. “It is great to see so many positive comments coming from visitors to the centre,” he said. “There are plenty of exciting ideas for the centre which we are looking to implement in the coming months. We are pleased to see that tourism in the Shire is moving forward.” The Visitor Information Centre is open seven days a week and currently has 15 volunteers and two casual staff members. A volunteer familiarisation program will begin next month. Each month volunteers and staff will be vis-

iting attractions, accommodation and tourism businesses throughout the region. Tenterfield businesses are encouraged to provide brochures, flyers and business cards to the information centre to assist with promotion, free of charge. Tenterfield Council is also investigating putting souvenirs back in the information centre with a focus on locally made products. You can register your interest to sell local products through the centre, or if you are interested in volunteering, contact Tourism Officer Caitlin Reid on 02 6736 1082 or council@tenterfield.nsw. gov.au.

Mobile breast screenings - just do it! WOMEN of the Southern Downs will be able to get free breast health checks when the BreastScreen digital mobile service arrives in Warwick on 28 September. Local women aged over 40 are encouraged to take advantage of the free services and be proactive when it comes to fighting breast cancer. The state-of-the-art digital mobile service will be located at Warwick Hospital from 28 September to 8 January, 2016, with only 30 minutes needed for a free breast screen. Health Promotion Officer at Breast Screen Queensland Toowoomba Shenaed Bliss said the accessibly of the service was a great opportunity. “The mobile service visits selected rural locations every two years and is always very well received,” Ms Bliss said. “This is a great opportunity to book in for that first breast screen that you’ve been meaning to have, or to come back for a regular two-yearly screen. “A Darling Downs Hospital and

time to do so.” Ms Bliss said the current recommendation for women aged over 40 should have a breast screen every two years and women 18 years and over should have a pap smear every two years. “In 2015, more than 15,000 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and around 850 with cervical cancer,” she said. “One in eight Queensland women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and of those 90 per cent will have no family history of the illness.” “That’s why we encourage all women aged 40 and over to have a free breast screen every two years, and also be sure to carry out regular breast checks. “If you find something unusual, of have any concerns about your breast health, see your GP as soon as possible.” Women aged over 40 who want to book appointment can call 132050 to book a free breast screen with the mobile service. A doctor’s referral is not required.

Walk to honour Sharyn Casey’s tips

THE annual Sharyn Rowen Memorial Walk was held in Stanthorpe on Wednesday 16 September. The event has been organised by Southern Downs Employment Service for the past three years as part of Disability Action Week. They are a disability employment service provider that assists locals in the Granite Belt community. The walk is held in honour of Sharyn Rowen who was a tireless advocate for people with disabilities until ultimately succumbing to multiple sclerosis and leukaemia. She was responsible for organising the first Disability Action Week in the community. In attendance were Stanthorpe Lions Club and St Joseph’s School who both regularly support the event. Light up the Night “I just want to say a huge thankyou to everyone who supported the event from the businesses that gave prizes to the local community groups that jumped on board to provide sponsorship.” Angie said there was more than $9500 raised from the event. “I look forward to doing it again next year,” she said. There are three different colour lanterns used during the event all with their own meaning. Gold lanterns are carried to remember a loved one lost to blood cancer. White lanterns are held as a sign of a person’s own battle with blood cancer and blue lanterns are taken by those who want to show that they care. A total of 60,000 people are currently living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder and 34 people are

Manager of Southern Downs Employment Service Alan Jones organised the event this year and said it was an important tradition in the Stanthorpe community. “It’s a big deal because there’s a big network of people in this area who have disabilities and support people with disabilities and we want to make sure everyone is included in the community,” he said. “It’s been going since 1995 and my organisation has always been involved. “It’s run in conjunction with Granite Belt Support Services, Community Development Services and Endeavour Learning and Lifestyle.” The Sharyn Rowen Memorial Walk will return next year.

A Light the Night event was held at Stanthorpe to raise money for those affected by blood cancer. The nationwide events are held in association with the Leukaemia Foundation to raise money and research and support for families affected by blood cancer. The event invites people to light lanterns and walk to raise awareness. Organiser Angie Sims worked with a bunch of people in the local community to get the event up and running including her husband Stuart, son Daniel, Fiona Patty, John and Julia Boucher and many other Stanthorpe locals. Angie said the whole community got involved in the event on Saturday night, 19 September. “It was really good with probably a couple hundred people who were all very generous,” she said.

Braving the cold were Mal and Lee James from Stanthorpe. Pictures: TERRY WEST diagnosed each day with a form of blood cancer. More events will be held nationwide on 9 October with simultaneous events in Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba and most other major cities in Australia.

Ready to light the night were Lindsey Friend with Blake and Paige Friend.

The disabled join young, take action By DANE LILLINGSTONE SCHOOLS and people with disabilities from around Warwick and the Southern Downs converged on Queens Park on Thursday morning 17 Septmember for a river walk as part of Disability Action Week. The Lions River Walk couldn’t keep the rain away but it didn’t detract from the importance of raising awareness in the community of people with disabilities. Organiser David Gavin said it was an important event in bringing the community together. “Our Disability Action Week Committee in the Southern Downs has been very busy this year and we’re striving towards a more connected and inclusive community,” he said. “We’re here to celebrate Disability Action Week and showcase the abilities of people that have a disability and ensure that they’re included in society.”

The Warwick Lions organised a barbecue and sausage sizzle, and there was also dancing, face painting and games. President of the Warwick and District Disability Support Group Peter Stacy attended the event and said it was about creating an understanding of how some people lived and what they could offer. “People with a disability are able to provide lots of helpful things in the community,” he said. “Endeavour runs a recycling centre, they also do the tip shop at the dump so a lot of these people with a disability are heavily involved in recycling products within the community. This is a major benefit to the community. “It’s a good thing and it gives them something to do, they work there, they get paid, they’re part of the community.” Mr Stacy said Disability Action Week played an important

!

role in instilling understanding and acceptance in society. “It raises the awareness of the community towards what people with a disability can do and how they can participate,” he said. “There are things that can be done that the community can benefit from. One of the major reasons we have things like Disability Action Week is to allow the community to observe these things and think about these things.” He said this was a way of getting young people who may not be familiar with disabilities to be accepting. “It’s good to have the schools involved. As they grow up through, there is less confrontation and they have more awareness and are more acceptable. They can see with a little more clarity,” he said. Disability Action Week wrapped up on the Southern Downs on 18 September.

What’s On Ophicleide opus By TANIA PHILLIPS WHAT is believed to be Queensland’s first ever ophicleide recital will happen in the concert hall at Robert Channon Wines at Stanthorpe on Sunday, 4 October. The concert features Nick Byrne, one of Australia’s leading ophicleide players and David Miller, one of the country’s finest pianists. So what is an ophicleide? Why is the Battle of Waterloo important? And why is this Queensland’s first recital? According to Robert Channon the ophicleide is a 19th century brass instrument that looks a bit like a brass bassoon. But for the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, it might never have been invented. “After the battle, the victorious troops marched to Paris, led by military bands,” he said. “The Grand Duke Constantine of Russia is said to have been delighted by a particular bandsman from an English regiment, playing a keyed bugle. Constantine had a copy made (of the instrument - not the bandsman!) by instrument maker, Halary, who in 1817 went on to develop a family of three new keyed brass instruments. “He called his soprano instrument a ‘clavitube’, the alto a ‘quinti-clave’ and the bass in-

Nick Byrne and the ophicleide. strument an ‘ophicleide’.” ‘Ophicleide’ was a made up name from the Greek words meaning ‘serpent’ and ‘keys’. The serpent was the excitingly named but hapless wooden tubed instrument (coiled into a snake-like shape) that the ophicleide replaced in bands and orchestras.” He said however while the serpent was in use for more than 250 years the ophicleide went out of style quickly as the newly invented tuba (with valves not keys) became the instrument of choice from the 1870s.

So why is Robert sure this is Queensland’s first recital? “Well, we don’t really know, but according to a paper delivered by CG Austin in 1961 on the subject of Early Musical Performances in Queensland, the first professional orchestra to play in Brisbane was in 1872 - already towards the end of the ophicleide’s orchestral reign,” he said. In recent times, Nick Byrne (also a Sydney Symphony Orchestra trombonist) played the ophicleide in Brisbane in a performance with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra but according to Nick, as far as he also is aware “this will be the first time an Ophicleide has performed in any solo capacity in Queensland!” Robert said the instrument has “a beautiful sound quality” and this will be a chance to hear “two of Australia’s finest musicians performing”. The concert is in the Swigmore Hall at Robert Channon Wines on Sunday 4 October at 2pm. Tickets are $25, including a glass of wine at interval, and they can be booked through the winery on 07 4683 3260. Details of the concert are on their website at www.robertchannonwines.com

Cattle Block with River Frontage Approx 90 hectares of open grass country with shade timber on Mt Lindesay Road over the border from Stanthorpe. The property is fenced into 3 paddocks, all stockproof fencing, with 1 large dam and 1 smaller stock dam. The owners are currently running cattle as part of their main cattle operation. The block features a good frontage to the Maryland River and has some wonderful granite rock formations. Power is available some 400 metres from the boundary fence and the owners would lease back the block for their cattle. NRL Wrap

★★★★★★★★

From north to south NRL has nation hooked RUGBY League fans are enjoying top shelf performances as the competition draws to its climax. After sensational performances last weekend from the Roosters and Cowboys the four teams who dominated the season are just 80 minutes away from making a grand final appearance. While there are no games in Sydney this weekend clubs from one end of the eastern seaboard to the other are represented in the preliminary finals. On Friday night all roads lead to Suncorp for a game of Origin proportions as the Roosters and Broncos do battle to secure the first spot in the grand final. The Roosters booked their spot in Friday night’s showdown after a dominant 38-12 win over the Bulldogs. The Dogs were off the chain and solid in the opening exchanges and the game looked likely to deliver the arm wrestle many had predicted. A litany of mistakes from the Bulldogs at crucial stages let the Roosters off the hook allowing them to post first points - their first win for the night. The Roosters rested Mitchell Pearce for this game giving their playmaker another week to nurse his injured hamstring. His replacement Jackson Hastings was a dominant influence in the game as was the big forward pack. The match was not without controversy. In the 51st minute the Roosters, Kane Evans was awarded a controversial try. Most commentators and Doggies fans thought the ball had been grounded short of the line. It seemed to be a turning point in the game but it cannot be said it cost the Dogs the game. There was no doubting the Roosters domination in the game however it is difficult to estimate how much of the win can be attributed to the poor performance of the Bulldogs who saved one of their worst performances all season for this game. The handling from both sides at times was poor and if the Roosters are to win at Suncorp they cannot afford to offer the Broncos easy opportunities. Brisbane had the luxury of a week off to recharge their batteries. There has been little between these two teams this season. In round six bragging rights went the way of the Broncos on the back of a Ben Hunt try in extra time. In round 24 the Roosters stopped the Broncos march to the Minor Premiership with a tough 12-10 win. Head to head stats show the Broncos hold a narrow advantage. It goes without saying that Bennett will have the Broncos trained to the minute. The biggest advantage they take in to this game will be the

support of the Suncorp crowd with many expecting an Origin atmosphere. The result may depend on which team handles the occasion best and of course who gets, or orchestrates that lucky break at a crucial time. Hunt may well be the player that can do that. In what will be a game worthy of a grand final I think it will be a Broncos win giving captain Justin Hodges the chance of a fairytale end to his remarkable career. On Saturday the action switches to AAMI Park in Melbourne. With no AFL games in the sporting capital at the weekend nothing less than a sell-out crowd is expected for the battle between the Storm and Cowboys. The Cowboys were clinical and ruthless in Townsville last weekend as they reeled in and filleted the Sharks. The Cowboys saved their best home performance of the year for last they cut the Sharks to shreds. Co-captain Matt Scott set the scene from his opening touch mowing down Sharks players like nine pins. JT and fullback Lachlan Coote combined to produce their best kicking game of the season as the Cowboys galloped away with the game. The sense of urgency from all Cowboys players was palpable and they never once took their foot off the gas to hold the Sharks scoreless. The Sharks looked to have lost their captain when he suffered an ankle injury and left the field before half time. Gallen returned after the break and love him or hate him, he showed again he is one of the toughest in the game. He was one of the few shining lights for the Sharks but the Cowboys had him hog-tied. The NQlanders know better than most that in finals football you must seize every opportunity and on Saturday they will be hoping to ride the wave of momentum all the way to the grand final. Standing in their way is one of the most experienced outfits in the business, Melbourne Storm. Coach Craig Bellamy admitted his troops needed the week off to regroup after defeating the Roosters in a torrid encounter in week one of the finals. The Storm go into this game knowing the Cowboys will approach the match with a game plan to neglect their strengths and try and contain them. Melbourne, by their own admission play their best football in super competitive games against quality opposition and it does not get much better or bigger than this. The prospect of the matchup between Origin team mates JT and Cooper Cronk should have all league fans salivating. Last Saturday Cowboys

young hooker Jake Granville stepped up after a quiet performance against the Broncos. He faces an enormous test here against the very best in the business Cameron Smith. Up front it will be an NZ pack facing off against what is almost the Kangaroo pack as the Bromwich boys and Matt Scott and Co rumble. Melbourne has a decisive advantage in the head to head stats but never has there been as much at stake for the Cowboys. Who heads to the grand final from here is a real toss of the coin. My heart says Cowboys but my head leans ever so slightly towards Melbourne. Either way this will be an encounter worthy of any grand final. Perhaps the team that wins here will ultimately lift the trophy in Sydney on the biggest rugby league stage of all.

Local Sport Casey’s tips

Connecting people with the sport they love.

It’s okay to dare to dream The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

ONLY days into the Rugby Union World Cup tournament and fans have been floored by the performance of supposed minnows Japan who staged one of the biggest upsets in sporting history with their 34-32 defeat of the Springboks. It was more than just a defeat - they defeated one of only three nations to have won the William Webb Ellis trophy twice, and to add insult to injury in doing so defeated one of the most experienced sides to take to a Rugby World Cup field. It is fair to say that concerns in some quarters about Japan hosting the 2019 World Cup event may have just been obliterated. Who wins William in this World Cup does not look quite as cut and dried as it did before the competition. Adding fuel to that fire was the performances of the All Blacks who were less than convincing in their win 26-16 over the Pumas in their opening game of the tournament. The Pumas were singularly unfazed by the famous jersey and the famous faces in the line-up. As this is written, the Wobbly Wallabies are yet to open their account so we should not yet “count our chickens” as they take on the unpredictable Fijians. One of the most successful of all code hoppers Israel Folau is biding his time waiting for the chance to dominate on the greatest stage there is, the Rugby World Cup. At 1.45am Thursday morning the Wallabies begin their campaign and he gets his chance. Folau has spoken of his dream of putting down a marker that will stand forever and leaving a legacy. His opportunity is beckoning and there will be plenty of Aussie Union supporters blearyeyed today after a late night or early morning glued to the TV, just as there was when Jason Day blitzed the field in BMW Championship his win securing the top spot in the golf world rankings. Watching on closely was good mate and former junior playing partner Stanthorpe’s Nathan Reardon. Day, who dreamed big back then as a junior, has won four of his past six tournaments and a total of five events on the US PGA Tour this year on his way to being the youngest ever Aussie Number One. Who says dreams don’t come true. Not Jason Day, not the Japanese Cherry Blossoms and not Izzy Folau. - Casey MACY CLARK WINS STATE TITLE MACY Clark, former Tenterfield teenager now based in Mudgee, recently claimed the NSW State Junior Motocross Title after a successful season competing in events in Cessnock, Orange, Port Macquarie, Nowra and Appin. After the 15 races, Clark had amassed enough points to be crowned champion in a very tight competition. The race for the title went down to the wire and her coach Wayne Flack was impressed with the maturity Clark showed in the final round at Appin to clinch the title. Trailing the leader by 10 points heading in to the final round she edged closer in the opening two events but need a win in the final race. Holding her composure, Clark did not put a foot wrong in the final event and showed great maturity to win the event comfortably and snatch the title. While Clark paid tribute to her family and friends who have helped her achieve her dream, her coach was full of praise for her hard work and dedication. “She trains on the bike twice a week to work on her skill and gym once a week as well,” he said. Grandparents Ian and Alisa Brown are two of her biggest fans and have put in plenty of kilo-

Some of the winners from the Tenterfield presentation night. The Tenterfield Tigers presentation. metres to attend race meetings across the state as their talented granddaughter chased her dream of a State Title. Unfortunately Clark will be unable to attend this year’s national titles given the logistical nightmare of getting to Western Australia. Once Clark turns 16 she will move up to seniors but is planning on having a fairly relaxed 2016 season. The youngster is enjoying the school break back in Tenterfield catching up with family and friends. Macy Clark oozes natural talent in this sport. With a combination of talent work ethic and composure that exceeds her years you can expect to hear more of Macy Clark as she begins her career against the best riders in Australia. CLOSE, BUT SIMMERS GETS THE NOD SCORES were close in the Laurie Newley Memorial Day single Stableford last Saturday. After a countback, Aaron Simmers got the nod ahead of Greg Fraser after both players returned scores of 41 points. In the ladies event Kay Webb returned to the winner’s circle carding a score of 39 to defeat Nikki Rossow (37). Pin shots went to Lyle Bryant at 3/12 and Dylan Barraclough at 17. Rachael Hendry held the ladies pin at 3/12 and Nikki Rossow had best approach at 17. Stephen Kay collected the balls on offer for the pro-pin at 1/10, Ian Harvey at 5/14 and Simon Shannon at 9/18. In the run down, it was a ball each to Trevor Wren (40), Stephen Kay (40), Simon Shannon (39), Dylan Barraclough (38) and Mark McCosker (38). Rachael Hendry collected a ball in the ladies run down. The club wishes to thank the Newley family for their continued support of this popular event. This Saturday the club has scheduled a Canadian Foursomes competition sponsored by Mitre 10. Get your partner organised and be ready for a shot gun start at 11.45am. DIEHARDS AND WARRIORS FACE OFF THE Dalby Diehards stormed into contention for the 2015 TRL premiership with 28-24 win over the Gatton Hawks in the preliminary final last Sunday. The Diehards will go into this weekend’s grand final underdogs but are riding high on a wave of confidence after some outstanding recent form. The Diehards have only made the grand final twice in 20 years so they are sure to have plenty of support. Their more fancied opponents blitzed the Hawks two weeks ago to progress to the final. Players, officials and supporters are hoping for back to back wins in the club’s 50th anniversary year. The minor premiers have been in stellar form all season and Wattles back-rower and club presi-

Graham Morgant at Inglewood SSAA. dent Aaron Scheid was excited about the chance to play in another grand final as the Warriors try to defend the A grade title for the first time in the club’s history. “In the 50 years of Wattles, no team has gone back-to-back so that is something we want to do.“ Both sides have big mobile forward packs and that is expected to provide an exciting clash in the middle. If the Wattles forwards can lay a good platform expect to see some fireworks from the flying Matt Purcell and Ciesolka who teams have found difficult to contain all season. Grand finals are a 50/50 bet but if Wattles play to the form they have displayed all season they can go back to back here. Game Day Program TRL grand finals 9am: Women’s League Tag: Goondiwindi v Pittsworth 10.15am: Second Division: Millmerran v Warwick 11.40am: Under 18: Valleys v Pittsworth 1.15pm: Reserve grade: Gatton v Valleys 2.30pm: A grade: Wattles v Dalby WARWICK GOLFERS OUT AND ABOUT IT was been another busy week on the Warwick Golf Course. Conditions may not have been ideal but 23 hearty souls strolled around for nine holes for the Red Rooster Rumble. It is good to see Mat Penn back playing golf and with a score of 22 points he claimed ta win

in RRR. Finishing runner up also with 22 points was Alan Mathews on a countback from Sean Morrison. In the rundown it was Rhys Farrell and Greg Wallace 21 and Josh Hynes with 20.The pins went to Garry Adcock, Brad Rose and Sean Morrison. Sandy MacDonald was in good touch on Saturday and took out the Single Stableford competition sponsored by The Horse and Jockey. Macdonald finished with 38 points one point clear of runner up Bob Lester. The balls in the rundown went to Peter Morrison 37, David Craggs, Garry Hankinson, Henry Kelly, Gordon McKeen and Rupert Smith (35). The pins went to Gordon Cooper, Peter Morrison, David Craggs, D Blazely, Nathan Jones and Jay Roberts. The foursome championships were held on Sunday in conjunction with the Coe Cup.The winners were Nathan Jones and Shane McKenzie with a gross score of 148. Sam McLennan and Declan Murphy were runners up with a score of 159. The Coe Cup was won by Conrad Seibel and Ken Burley (nett score 139). In second place was Pete Boney and Dion Phillips. The pins went to Dion Phillips, Declan Murphy, Adrian Murphy and Shane McKenzie. Bookings for the Single Stableford competition this Saturday can be made by contacting the Pro Shop on 4661 3664. The event will be sponsored by B&K Motors.

Local Sport FLAG EVENT TIGHT SATURDAY Wallangarra Golf Club members and guests played the flag event which prove to be another tight affair with Jamie Purcell narrowly edging out Gary Sutcliffe by a club length to claim a win. Kevin Williams finished third. Denis McMeniman took the pin on three and Scott Williams grabbed the ninth. There are unsubstantiated reports that one members may have had a few air swings under a tree while playing the thirteenth. That member has been given the benefit of the doubt - apparently the flies last weekend were out and about quite early in the season at the ‘Garra. This Saturday a Two Ball Ambrose (sans flies) has been scheduled. BIG WINNERS IN PAIRS FINAL THE finals of the Summit Bowls Club 2015 pairs competition was decided last weekend.Taking out the event was the team of Len Covill and Paul Zamprogno. The pair out played their opponents Kurt Empen and Wayne Thompson on Sunday winning by a 30-2 margin. Social Bowls were played on Saturday. Chris Stratford Attilio Zamprogno and Ray Spiller went down Brian Brown Rod Newlands and Phil Davis 20-16. The greens were once again turned out in fine style by Errol Moss and Paul Zamprogno ensured no one went thirsty. A reminder that the Club Triples will be held on 3 October. Players are asked to submit their nominations and teams will be selected by the club. Nominations close 25 September. The annual Apple Blossom Carnival is only a month away and names/ teams are required by the organisers ASAP. PEARSON IN FORM AT SPORTERS SPORTERS were out and about last Sunday playing the front nine. Craig Pearson played consistently to claim a win ahead of runner-up Dick Hilton. Run downs went to John Walsh and Bob Watts. Paul Byrnes was in good touch and showed plenty of class to finish with the best gross and nearest the pin on the third hole. Clarky fluked the pro pin. It was another good Sunday morning but there could be a review, an investigation or even a Royal Commission in the wind after the two boys who run the raffles each went home with a meat tray - sounds a little dicey Mr Simmers and Mr Clark. Sporters will be on again this Sunday at the usual tee off time 8.00-8.30am. MORGAN SCORES WELL GRAHAM Morgan was in great form last weekend at the Inglewood SSAA Muzzle Loading shoot. The 10 lane Seneca Run comprised of 10 animal shaped targets at various distances out to 100 metres. Morgan hit eight of the 10 targets to win the event. Stephanie Dudgeon placed second ahead of Ray Dudgeon. A 100 metre Rimfire competition was held at the benchrest area. Peter Jones had a great round to win the event with Murray Brown and Quentin Chapman taking out the minor placings. This weekend, the club is holding a two day pistol competition commencing 12.30pm Saturday and 10.00am Sunday. Visitors are welcome and the club is able to provide firearms for your use if necessary.

Tom Donald wearing period costume coonskin cap.

Members have been involved in the club’s annual fund-raising raffle for Careflight, arranged by Shirley Evans. The support from the public has been outstanding. Anyone with an interest in the game may obtain information from the ladies running the fund-raiser who have a supply of information brochures on hand. COWBOYS FACE UNDEFEATED MILLMERRAN AFTER a good win last weekend over Valleys, the Warwick Cowboys second division team will take on favourites Millmerran in the grand final of the Clive Berghofer Second Division competition on Sunday. The Cowboys had a comfortable 32-20 win in the end but were forced to do it the hard way when Valleys skipped away to an early 16-6 lead. The Cowboys met the Minor Premiers Millmerran in the semi-final and went down 2416 in a tough encounter.

The grand final clash should be a great game. The Cowboys have played themselves in to good form while Millmerran, who finished Minor Premiers after going through the season undefeated, will be out to avenge their grand final loss last season. Unfortunately it is season over for the Cowboys Reserve grade season after going down 2616 to Valleys in last weekend’s major semi final. TEAM MATES HEADING TO GOLD COAST INTER-CLUB team mates Marty Wylie Alex Mattiazzi and Dylan Politch are preparing to take on some of the best young football talent in Queensland next week after their selection in the South West Under 15 side which will play in the Gold Coast champions Youth Cup. Registrations for the 2015 event exceeded expectations and it will now be staged at Glennon Park Nerang to allow all games to be held at the one venue. The three Stanthorpe players were selected in July following strong performances in the South West Queensland trials. Each brings their own unique skills set to the 13 man squad according to Coach Michael Wilmot. Mattiazzi is a natural striker. Wylie is a strong defender and a good reader of the game. Politch who plays on the wing is capable of changing the pace of a game in attack and has good vision. The annual Gold Coast round robin tournament will be played over five days and is a great opportunity for these boys to test their skills against some of the best in the state. SHOUT OUT TO JUNIOR CRICKETERS IT’S time for junior cricketers - boys and girls - to nominate for the 2015/2016 season. The Stanthorpe Junior Cricket Association is currently accepting sign-ons for the coming season. Play commences on 10 October and runs through to December before a break for the Christmas school holidays and recommences in late January. Response to last Saturday’s sign-on and sausage sizzle was positive with 40 children already nominated. Junior cricket session begin at 9.00am on Saturday mornings.

Enjoying the Tenterfield Tigers presentation night. A reminder to members that the monthly meeting will be held at noon on Sunday. GAME CUT SHORT MEMBER of the Stanthorpe Croquet organisation attended the recent Warwick Friendship Day. There was plenty of warmth on and off the green however the day was interrupted by some dire weather. It was on and off the field during breaks in the rain and the day was cut short when a storm washed out play. SOUTHERN CROSS BOWLS IT WAS a busy weekend at the Cross with bowls on both Saturday and Sunday. First up we had Beaumonts Transport enjoy an afternoon of bowls. Thank you to our members who came along and helped out for the afternoon. On Sunday the Oak Tree Retirement village sponsored the day and our lucky winners were C Wickham, C Davidson and N Fletcher. The runners-up were R Lawson, A Blazely and Slave. With two rounds of bowls and a sausage sizzle in between it was a really nice day. Our raffle winners were Raymond, Clark, Brian and Slave. Results - Q Hamer, D Blazely def R Francis, Y Reid 29-20; C Wickham, C Davidson, N Fletcher def B Doherty, C Hope, B Bourke 21-19; R Lawson, A Blazely Slave def V Hemmings, T Francis, D Scotney 23-20. It was nice to have two visiting travellers Anne and Des Blazely come along and enjoy a game. Thank you once again to Oak Tree for their sponsorship. Unfortunately there was no bowls last Thursday with the rain cramping our style. Coming up today Thursday 24 September will be Claire’s pairs. The men are invited to come along and join in with the ladies for a game. Names in by 12.30pm please. The final of the men’s B Grade singles are also on today at 10am between C Davidson and V Grey. Good luck to you both. This Saturday 26 September the Cowboys Reserve grade reunion will be on at the Cross and our members are asked to come along and join them on the bowling green. Names in by 12.30 please for a 1pm start. Also coming up the following Saturday 3 October the Condamine Sports Club will be sponsoring the day. Names can be put on the sheet now.
