NEW GC OUT Telco tower grave fight NOW

CONCERNED: Kate Warby with daughter Ava at the Geelong West Cemetery. 144782

By PAUL MILLAR

ANGRY residents aim to topple plans to erect a telecommunications tower in an historic Geelong cemetery, telling the provider: not near our backyard. The Geelong Cemeteries Trust has signed an agreement with Telstra to lease a section of the Western Cemetery to install a 37.5m pole at the rear of the graveyard. The City of Greater Geelong is considering a planning application. Kate Warby, a mother of two youngsters, said it was just not the right place for a “monstrous tower. Her home backs on to the cemetery, where her grandparents are buried. “It would almost be in our backyard, every time you went out you

would be staring up at it, Ms Warby said. “Our major concern is how it would affect the health of our children. She rallied locals against the proposal and said a quick walk around a few streets garnered 243 signatures opposing the installation. “What I also found out was that a lot of locals did not know anything about it, Ms Warby said. The cemetery has a heritage overlay, with its first recorded burial in 1858 and has many links to early settlers. It also houses the remains of Willem Baa Niip (also known as King Billy, the head of the Barrabool tribe), who defended his right to live on the land of his people, the Wathaurong.

He died in 1885 at the age of 49. The newly constructed section of the ring road, Baanip Boulevard, is named after him. Ms Warby said locals were angered at the suggestion of the installation of a tower as the cemetery “holds a special place in the hearts of many local residents. Darryl Thomas from the Geelong Cemeteries Trust confirmed that his organisation had signed a lease agreement with Telstra. However, until a planning application had been finalised it carried no weight, Mr Thomas said. He said the Trust was not involved in the discussions and it was an issue that would be resolved between Telstra and council.

Mr Thomas said no graves would be disturbed if the tower was installed as the planned site for the mast was in a boundary storage area. “Victorian cemeteries are here forever and they need to be maintained forever. We do not get government funding and we have to generate our own income, Mr Thomas said. Trent Sullivan, another local, who is running for council, accused Telstra of taking advantage of there not being a sitting councillor in the ward, following the departure of Stretch Kontelj. The application will go before a Council Development Hearings Panel for decision, at a date still to be set, but likely to be within the next month.

Today’s article isn’t so much a ‘Tech Talk’ as it is a ‘Tech Tip’! You see, if you’ve recently updated your iPhone to iOS 9, some of you may have experienced the ‘Frozen on Slide to Upgrade’ bug. his is where you get right to the end of your update and the phone freezes up so you can’t use your device.

Luckily, there is a fairly easy ix. You simply have to connect your phone to iTunes on your computer and restore from a backup you have made prior to iOS 9. his seems to ix the problem right up.

IT’S nice to know there are still some literal people about. The Independent’s weekly Reader’s Recipe asks readers to submit a favourite recipe and send it to the Independent, marked recipe, by mail or email. So that’s just what one reader did - the envelope faithfully including the words ‘marked recipe’. Perhaps they just didn’t want to risk missing out on the prize - a yummy cake from The Cheesecake Shop. THE Surf Coast Aquatic Leisure Centre Action Group has invoked the spirit of one of the most often quoted lines in movie history: “If you build it, they will come.â€? The line has been adapted to: “Build it and they will swimâ€?. The group is pushing Surf Coast Shire for a long-awaited Torquay pool, but wants it to revisit the financial burden on ratepayers. The only thing letting the group down is its acronym: SCALCAG. Double Take is unsure about swimming in that pool ‌

However, if you do not have a backup on your computer, you might be in a bit of trouble. You will need to restore from a backup of some sort that was made prior to iOS 9. At Techrevive, we have a generic blank restore that will serve this purpose. One thing to keep in mind, you WILL lose all of your data currently on your phone. his is another good reason to always keep backups on a regular basis. One other thing you can do is simply wait for Apple to come out with a ix, which usually doesn’t take all that long. We have more details on our Blog page. INVESTIGATORS will scan video footage of an arsonist who torched two cars outside a Corio medical centre early yesterday morning. Detective Senior Sergeant Rod Lloyd said the Country Fire Authority was called out to a blaze at the Melbourne Pathology Centre on Bacchus Marsh Rd about 3.10am. “Two vehicles were totally engulfed in flames and they both belonged to the pathology centre, the detective said. The fire had been reported by

a passing motorist on his way to work. An initial inspection of CCTV footage from the scene revealed that an arsonist had been spreading accelerant around the cars and then fled the scene. Both cars were severely damaged in the fire. Detectives are also investigating an armed robbery at a takeaway coffee establishment in Corio yesterday morning. The detective sergeant said a bandit, armed with an iron bar, threatened the attendant at Coffee Jet, in Thompsons Rd just before 6am.

He demanded cash and the attendant handed over a small container with money in it and then the robber, who was wearing a black hoody, fled the scene on foot, heading south. The attendant was unhurt in the incident. Police believe the thief could have run up a nearby railway line. Anybody with any information about the fires or the armed robbery is asked to contact local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com. au.

Workers underpaid by rogue hirers - inquiry By PAUL MILLAR AN INQUIRY into labour hire was told that Geelong firms were blatantly abusing the system, underpaying or not paying workers and threatening investigators with shotguns. Industrial Relations Minister Natalie Hutchins was in Geelong yesterday to hear first-hand complaints into rogue companies, sham contractors and the abuse of visas to avoid workplace laws. The Minister told the Independent that the national average for the use of contract labour was eight per cent, but in Victoria it was 28 per cent. “That could be even higher in Gee-

long and we are seeing a rise in the abuse of foreign workers on visas,” she said. This inquiry will address how the labor hire industry could be better regulated and how the rights of workers could be better protected. On her visit to Geelong Ms Hutchins was told genuine refugees, who were now permanent residents, were being denied work by unscrupulous operators, who preferred to hire workers on bridging visas and pay them less. Michael Martinez, the chief executive of Diversitat, said refugees who had now settled in Geelong were being priced out of the market by rogue operators.

“It’s happening in Geelong, especially in the hospitality and tourism industry, it’s rife and how can genuine businesses, who are paying the right wages, compete?” he asked. The hearing was constantly told that workers who complained about wages and conditions had their hours cut or were just dumped and had little recourse as they were not on the books. The hearing, to provide information for a discussion paper, was told that a union representative was met by a farmer with a shotgun when he went to a property to investigate the exploitation of workers. The Geelong meeting was told that

chicken farms and fruit picking operations were a serious area of worker exploitation. It also heard that some workers were being paid $10 an hour, while some employers were acting like gang masters and taking a percentage of wages. Tim Gooden, the local trades hall secretary, said he had personally been approached by two Afghan refugees, who had been employed in Geelong to work on a ship despite having no maritime experience. He said they were promised $3000 each for the trip but it was cut short and they received only $1500 between them.

In brief Abuse letter GEELONG College is the second leading local private school after Geelong Grammar to become embroiled in historical sexual abuse issues after this week sending out a letter to families calling on victims to come forward. The school said it strongly condemned sexual abuse and stood ready to acknowledge, apologise to, and support any student who was harmed while in the care of the school.

Mayoral vote GEELONG remains “on track” to vote for its mayor in October next year, according to the State Government. The government was responding after claims a municipal review was aimed at dismantling the directly elected mayoral model.

Missing out REGIONAL Victoria will miss the benefits of the grand final public holiday because V/line will run a restricted timetable, according to Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber. “Long weekends are an asset for regional economies as people get out of the city. We’re letting ourselves down if we don’t provide quality public transport to facilitate travel across Victoria,” Mr Barber said.

Danger time THE FIRST step in the return of Patrick Dangerfield to Geelong has been taken, with the star midfielder informing Adelaide Crows he wants to exercise his free agency rights. The club said it would “make decisions and take action that is in the best interests of our football club”. Adelaide can force trade negotiations by matching Geelong’s offer, believed to be over $800,000.

Lanterns light the way for familes touched by cancer By EMILY IANNELLO A TEAM of local residents will host a community walk on behalf of the Leukaemia Foundation to help brighten the lives of families affected by blood cancer. General Manager of the Leukaemia Foundation Victoria Stephanie Hechenberger said Light the Night had grown to become “one of Australia’s most special events, with an atmosphere that inspires, encourages and empowers”.

More than 100 communities across Australia will gather at dusk during October for the uplifting event. “We all need a little light in our lives. This sentiment couldn’t ring truer for more than 60,000 Australians living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders,” Ms Hechenberger said. “While research is improving survival, blood cancer still claims more lives than breast cancer or melanoma. Every day, another 34 people are di-

agnosed and, sadly, one Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours.” Highton Recreational Reserve will be turned into a twinkling landscape of hope as families and friends come together for a twilight walk. Each person will carry one of three lanterns; gold to remember a loved one, white for their own blood cancer journey, or blue to show they care. The national goal is to raise $1.5 million to enable the Leukaemia

Foundation to continue providing free emotional and practical support for people living with blood cancer. It will also enable the foundation to invest in research to improve treatments and find cures. The Leukaemia Foundation receives no ongoing government funding and relies on community support to fund its work. The fund-raiser will be held on 10 October at Highton Recreational Reserve from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Popular gym’s closure shock By PAUL MILLAR A POPULAR health club in the heart of the city has been forced to shut down after the landlord locked the doors, claiming the tenants owed thousands of dollars in rent. Stunned members became aware of the problem when they arrived at the impressive Corio Street facility, confronting a sign saying “closed until further notice”. “I sincerely regret to advise that, due to financial difficulties, the gym is closed until further notice,” a poster told members on behalf of the club chief executive Robyn Reimers. She said on her Facebook page that the owners had taken over the premises on Monday night. “I just want to say how deeply sorry I am for what has happened at the gym tonight,” she said. “We fell behind on last month with rent, and we’re working to rectify it.” A notice on the window of the gym said that Club Exec was “in breach of the lease in failing to pay rent, outgoings, GST and legal costs totalling $13,699.38”. The club, according to the notice, had been given two weeks to make good the arrears. That deadline was Monday. “Take notice that we require Club Exec Pty Ltd to quit possession and deliver up the premises forthwith on 21 September,” said the notification, on behalf of the managing agent. Ms Reimers, who is also listed as the club managing director, said: “I will hit the cancel button on the memberships that are direct debited, and I will be available to chat to anyone who wants to contact me. “I will endeavour to do whatever I can to ensure money goes back to clients. “I deeply apologise, and do not know what else to say,” she said.

National park trail rider threat By EMILY IANNELLO PARTS of the Otway National Park could be “trashed“ by out of control recreational activities, a Geelong Enviroment Council investigation has found. And a proposal for mountain bike trails around Eumeralla has been criticised as “damaging” to the value of fauna and flora in the area. Parks Victoria has proposed approximately 13 kilometes of dedicated cross-country moun-

tain bike trails and eight kilometres of shared trails around Eumeralla in the Great Otway National Park. The GEC investigation found riders had already created “multiple illegal tracks” throughout the park, many separated by just a few metres. “National parks should not be trashed by recreation activities out of control,” GEC said. A Parks Victoria proposal said the official trails would provide for a range of experiences that

would be appropriate for riders of various skill levels and be suitable to support the current schedule of annual events. The proposal was based on Park Victoria’s recognition of the need to provide suitable mountain biking opportunities for the growing number of riders across the state. Although it admits environmental and cultural values must be considered while planning, GEC president Joan Lindros said the proposal had “too much em-

phasis on mountain bike tracks and events”. “Our belief is that although recreational activity should be accepted, it should be the type of recreation that doesn’t affect the value of fauna and flora,” she said. Describing the area as “valuable” Ms Lindros said the National Park Act 1975 (Vic) should be properly reviewed before any decision was made. “We need Parks Victoria to really look at the Act, and manage

this area according to the Act,” she said. Ms Lindros was further concerned the tracks would be “too fragmented for wildlife”. “We want parks to be kept for their environmental values - but we also want people to enjoy them. “The riders haven’t created the tracks with intent for harm I have no objection to mountain bikes if there are tracks that are suitable for them,” Ms Lindros said.

Ms Lindros said she would like to see “a less environmental piece of land be turned into a mountain bike track set-up.” “There is one at Forest - the tracks have been planned and set out really well - it gives a good experience for the riders and maintains the integrity of the land.” GEC was still waiting to receive a map of proposed tracks. “The whole process is still under investigation,” Ms Lindros said.

Geelong line overcrowded GEELONG train travellers suffer more overcrowding than any other commuters in the region and are in desperate need of improved services, according to State Greens leader Greg Barber. He said that V/line had revealed that Geelong’s peak-hour trains were consistently full, but the government had no plan to increase capacity. “The latest data shows many peakhour trains are standing room only,” Mr Barber said. “These figures show Geelong is a special case, with worse overcrowding than other lines,” he said. However, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan scoffed at the suggestions that Labor was not investing in transport. “Only Labor invests in and improves public transport - the Greens can’t and the Liberals don’t,” Ms Allan said. “The former Liberal Government didn’t order a single V/Line carriage for two years or start any major public transport infrastructure projects.” Ms Allan said since coming to office the government had delivered 200 extra services a week to Geelong and ordered 21 new V/Line carriages.

“Our rolling stock strategy sets out a 10-year plan for 100 new metropolitan trains, 100 new trams, and a massive expansion of our regional train fleet.” In January 2013, Mr Barber also had a swipe at the Liberal Government on the same issue, saying: “Five years ago V/line told the government that trains would be standing room only from the opening of the Regional Rail Link. The government has been caught out without a plan for expanding V/line services to keep up with urban growth. “The government should be urgently ordering more train carriages to meet demand across all our regional train lines.” The Member for Western Victoria, Simon Ramsay, also bought into the transport debate, seeking assurances from the minister that an immediate review of all bus and train timetables in the Colac and Geelong regions would be undertaken to address failures in timetables and bus routes after the recently introduced changes. Mr Ramsay said the government needed to apply the appropriate resources and infrastructure in response to the many complaints received so that there was a more reliable service for public transport users.

“You are told that due to errors on your tax return, a warrant has been issued for your arrest and the police will be called unless you attend the local post office and make an immediate payment,” the warning said. Detective Senior Constable Daryl Crosthwaite of the Geelong Criminal Investigation Unit said police were aware of the problem and were investigating. He warned people not to give out any information over the telephone. There have concerns raised around the country about the bogus arrest warnings. Consumer Affairs Victoria has urged people to be wary of the high pressure scam saying targets were pressed for credit card details and other personal information, or to make a payment via wire transfer. CAV said regional areas had been particularly targeted by the scam.

HEARTLESS scammers are again targeting Geelong West, with the latest fraudster claiming to be from the tax office and about to issue an arrest warrant. The shysters have reworked their campaign, leaving an intimidating message, saying the resident is under surveillance. The Independent reported last week that scammers were preying on elderly migrants promising rebates in exchange for bank details. Ian Tucker, 66, a retiree, said he had received a startling message on his phone when he returned from a day out. He played the message to the Independent with the caller saying he was from the tax office and that Mr Tucker was being investigated for tax evasion. The caller said his house was under surveillance and a warrant would be issued for his arrest. “I was not frightened by it but

others might be, it could be intimidating for some people,” Mr Tucker said. He said he was alerted to scam operators hitting the region’s phones after reading a report in the Independent, where a “tax officer” targeted a pensioner in Geelong West, offering a rebate. “I’ve been around a bit and I do not appreciate it, people just do not need this type of thing. “Anybody would wonder what was happening if they had never been in trouble with the police and then they get a call saying there was a warrant out for their arrest,” Mr Tucker said. He gave the information to Consumer Affairs to investigate. The Australian Taxation Office is aware of the scam and has issued warnings of what to watch out for on its website, “You are called on either your private home or mobile number by a person claiming to be from the ATO.

Bomb case hermit denied bail By PAUL MILLAR AN APOLLO Bay man living in a shanty in rugged bushland for more than a decade has been denied bail after facing court on explosives, blackmail and stalking charges. Paul Leonard Hill, 75, known as “Noddy” to locals, faced the Geelong Magistrates Court after being arrested

at his bush home. The former abalone diver, who on Facebook gives his occupation as a selfemployed carpenter from Bethlehem, was charged with making an explosive device, two counts of blackmail, and stalking Premier Daniel Andrews. After being questioned and charged by Arson and Explosives Squad detectives on Tuesday he faced an out-of

sessions court hearing. He was then remanded to face the magistrates court on Wednesday, where he was denied bail and further detained to face the same court for committal mention on 22 January. The Geelong court appearance followed a police investigation, which resulted in his arrest on Tuesday.

He had been living in a bush retreat with solar panels, a communications satellite dish and had cut pathways through the rugged landscape. Apollo Bay Police alerted the Arson and Explosives Squad of their concerns when Mr Hill allegedly posted pictures of explosive devices online. The Bomb Squad investigated the images and believed that they could

be highly dangerous. Police allege that Mr Hill had sent 78 emails to the Premier over a 44-day period starting in March, resulting in the stalking charge. It also alleged he demanded compensation from the Premier of $50,000 or he would unleash Armageddon, which prompted the blackmail allegation.

Golfers get clubbed both ways during war protest By PAUL MILLAR QUEENSCLIFF Golf Club has become a casualty of the annual battle between the Defence Department and anti-war protesters. The department “suspended all non-essential access to Swan Island from 21 to 25 September 2015 to coincide with the annual anti-war protest” leaving the golf club without income. Golf club president Graeme Welsh said it was a time when the club should be taking advantage of an influx of visitors and families during the school holidays - instead, they were starved of income. “We are caught between the two, we have been there for more than 100 years and do not want to upset the department, we want to be there in another 100 years,” Mr Welsh said “It’s not good for us - we understand the Defence Department’s point of view but we are suffering financially as a result, especially during the school holidays.” Protesters target the island as it is a training ground for special units, including counter-terrorism police and is used by the elite Special Air Service.

It is run by the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, the agency that operates overseas as a sister organisation to the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation. It has been a repeated target of anti-war protesters. Swan Island Peace Convergence organisers said they planned to run a golf tournament on the island this year “to bolster revenue to the golf club’’ which they acknowledge has been disadvantaged by their previous actions. Mr Welsh said the golf club had no relationship with the activists. The protesters have had a running battle with authorities over the years with eight people arrested last year, when they breached a security fence, entering one of Australia’s key antiterrorism training centres. However, the group said that this year it had no intentions of disrupting the base during its annual pilgrimage and instead wanted to hold a “Peace Classic”. “There is simply no reasonable excuse for the Department of Defence to close the island under these circumstances,” according Greg Rolles, one of the event organisers.

THE art of science will be explored by the Geelong School of Botanic Art in its biennial exhibition. Inspired by Nature 4 by the Friends of the Botanic Gardens will be on show throughout October at Geelong’s Wintergarden. About 25 artists and tutors come together to exhibit work completed over the past two years. Organiser Helena Buxton said the Botanic Art School was one of the Friends’ most important activities. “It’s a wonderful program that offers people an opportunity to explore and learn about the world of plants, a place where art meets

science,” Ms Buxton said. “As in past exhibitions the style and subject range of Inspired by Nature 4 will be incredibly diverse and presented in a variety of formats. “Most of us do not realise it often takes two or three seasons for an artist to finish an individual work. “The world of plants and flowers is transient – once a specimen is selected it must be analysed and sketched then translated onto paper for completion. “In between collection and recording the original flower may have wilted, its life cycle finished. “The artists will often wait a

full year before they can again work directly from a freshly picked specimen.” The fourth exhibition in the Inspired by Nature series will again be curated by Jill Shalless from art@wintergarden. “Much of the plant material featured has been sourced from the Geelong Botanic Gardens; works will represent artists at many levels from highly skilled to beginner,” Ms Buxton said. An exhibition of delicate ceramics created by Anglesea artist Melinda Solly will also be on show. The exhibition will be launched at Wintergarden on 2 October at 5pm.

Buckets& Bouquets BOUQUETS to the nice men working at St John of God Hospital’s emergency department on 11 September. They wheeled my friend up to see his sick mum then brought him back to my car. Aunty, Geelong West BUCKETS to road and footpath works in Woodstock Street, Newtown. The new entrance from West Fyans Street reduced the already-narrow width by at least a metre, making it even harder to turn into the street when someone’s waiting to exit. Also, essential drains were removed from the street’s lower end. Golden Opportunity Missed, Grovedale BOUQUETS to the lovely Jen at the ABC Shop. Thank you for your kindness, knowledge and friendship. You will be missed. All the best for your future. Miss Fisher, Belmont BUCKETS to the woman driver who backed her horse float into the side of my one month old Ford Focus at Beach Side Nursery last Sunday. There was a ton of room where I was tucked away in the car park and she did not even have the decency to come and speak to me. A brand new car is hard won for a retired person and she spoiled Shame, Grovedale the day and car for me. BOUQUETS to GAWS who rescued our gorgeous cat Nutmeg 3 years ago. We believe she’s now one of the happiest cats in Geelong, which may not have been the case without people like you. Nino, Newtown BOUQUETS to First World Problems of Highton (B and B, 18 September) for their literary skills. Unfortunately their cognition and judgement seem somewhat impaired. Maybe it’s the water, which has fluoride in it. Fluoride is an accumulative poison and a proven neurotoxin, among other things. Don’t shoot the messenger. Peter McKinlay, Geelong

BUCKETS to Michael (B and B, 18 September). If you do not leave enough space and a driver brakes and you hit that car you may find that your insurance company may deny you a claim. The same may apply if you stop too close to a car and you get rammed from behind and pushed into the car. Another Michael, Corio BOUQUETS to Michael of East Geelong (B and B, 18 September) for hitting the nail on the head re selfish drivers who do not move forward when stopped at the lights, thus preventing other motorists from moving into the turning lane. This is my absolute pet hate. Please drivers, be aware of others on the road and show some courtesy. Kim, Grovedale BOUQUETS to the people of Geelong, Surf Coast, Bellarine and outlying areas for their generosity towards the 2015 Annual Geelong Legacy Appeal in support of the widows, widowers and children of deceased ex-service men and women. For their dependants the needs continues, including those of personnel returning from the more recent conflicts in which Australia has been involved, in support of the work of international agencies. Letters See-through council THERE appear to be serious divisions among councillors at the City of Greater Geelong. It is not unreasonable to assume this stems from political difference. This is not what ratepayers expect or want. It will be interesting to see if the upcoming Kildare Ward by-election results in more of the same. Indeed it would be helpful for voters to know before the poll on 17 October if any of the 11 candidates are politically aligned. I am standing as an independent; I am not a member of any political party. My focus will be on representing the people of Kildare Ward, not pushing the agenda of a party. It is crucial that transparency in the lead-up to the byelection is mirrored in the council chamber. Peter Murrihy Kildare Ward candidate Newtown

Don’t scare China away

THERE are three very simple steps the elderly, indeed anyone, can take to reduce the possibility of being scammed (Independent, 18 September). • Never agree to hand over money to anyone you don’t know. • Hang up on the caller. • Report the call to the police immediately. Sadly, this advice may be of little help to those suffering from the onset of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Hopefully, these people will have given power of attorney for financial matters to someone they can trust. Michael J. Gamble, Belmont

farmers are angry they are prepared to do what it takes to protect their livelihoods. They will demonstrate to the Australian community that local jobs will be protected under this agreement. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria Region Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Rural and Regional Transport

Foxing on planning NO, PRISCILLA Wright (Independent, 11 September), having a Labor State Government in charge of the Geelong Council is tantamount to leaving the fox in charge of the henhouse. It’s been bad enough having ALP councillors, blocking and deriding any policy offered by a Liberal, and they attack our popularly elected mayor at every turn no matter how good an idea. This same attitude finds itself in furious agreement with their state and federal colleagues – slash and burn and damn the consequences, without a care who they hurt as long as a combined effort of all Labor members and allied unions gets them into power. They are also proven bad managers of money. How much council cash will find its way into state coffers in the way of ‘fees’ for services that won’t be worth implementing? No thanks for the offer Mr Andrews – the solution will be far worse than the problem. Elizabeth Cross St Albans Park

Fluoride bias I FIND recent articles in the media (Suzanne Bridson, 18 September) biased and promoting fluoridation. I firmly believe the promoters are going to great lengths to justify fluoridation simply because time is showing it does not work. The compounds used for fluoridation contain arsenic, lead and cadmium. A certificate of analysis is available from fluoride suppliers (hydofluorosilicic acid). I have these certificates in my possession if anybody cares to read them. These products have never been approved for human consumption. As Suzanne Bridson admits, the dental profession is still in business. This is simply because people do not care about their dental hygiene, so what is the point of putting something in the water in the belief it will reduce tooth decay? At the introduction of fluoridation in Geelong, promoters made claims fluoridation could reduce tooth decay up to 60 per cent. Where is the proof? I firmly believe the powerful dental lobby cannot now admit fluoridation is a fraud simply because of their so-called professional standing in the community. KW Oakley Belmont

Where’s the prescription? FLUORIDATION is a lifelong prescription of an untested substance, unapproved by TGA or FDA, given

to patients a doctor has never met or examined and without an opportunity to treat side-effects. I ask Suzanne Bridson if she would accept her sister to be prescribed an unapproved treatment for autism for a lifetime, never to be seen by a medical professional to treat any side effects, from cradle to grave. Fluoridation is not science; it is quackery. If fluoridation really worked then Tasmania - an island fluoridated for over 50 years - would have minimal dental decay, which is not the case. The anti-fluoridationists, whom I have had the pleasure in meeting nationally and internationally, are compassionate people, who are concerned for their fellow citizen. Anna L Michalik North Geelong

Toxic water I SUFFER from fluoride toxicity. In February 2013 I drank a 250ml glass of fluoridated tap water as a fluoride challenge test and nearly died. In 1983 I moved to Geelong from Melbourne as the fluoride in the tap water was making me unwell. What I didn’t realise at the time was that the vegetables, fruit and other drinks had higher amounts of fluoride in them than a glass of tap water - up to 180 times more. I kept becoming more unwell, as I was eating from Australia’s toxic food and water chain. These days I cannot have contact with fluoridated tap water: Cannot shower, wash hands or drink it. I have to grow my own fruit and vegetables, due to the higher levels of fluoride contained in the commercial variety. I even tried to source organic food, but 95 per cent of it in Geelong alone has been contaminated with the toxic tap water. By May 2013 I was hypothyroid, which has been proved by UK studies to be linked to fluoride poisoning, as it is an endocrine inhibitor. I also have other health issues directly linked to fluoride. Our federal and state governments and the National Health Medical Resource Council have never tested the safety of fluoride. It has never been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Authority. Apparently it doesn’t seem to matter about the damage to the rest of our body’s health. I am not a walking set of teeth. Marilyn Pollard North Geelong

FARMERS in the western Victoria region are angry that the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has waged a scaremongering campaign filled with lies, hatred and racism over the Chinese-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA). CFMEU members are using bullying tactics by rallying outside MPs' offices and waging a war not seen since the industrial campaigns against the Howard Government. This is blatant political activism and is aided and abetted by the Federal Labor Opposition and Andrews Government, which is too gutless to stand up to Bill Shorten, but makes hypocritical platitude noises as it embarks on its trade missions to China. The National Farmers Federation is reported as saying that modelling shows if the FTA collapses it would mean a loss of a massive $18 billion over the next decade, and the peak dairying group, Australian Dairy Farmers, reports it would cost the dairy industry $60 million in the next 12 months. There is a real chance China will walk away from this trade deal if the CFMEU continues its hate campaign and the Labor Party continues to support CFMEU actions. The irony is that this trade agreement will create thousands of jobs for Australians and Victorians, particularly in rural and regional areas. I say to CFMEU members that when Australian

Spring is in the air and it’s time to celebrate... Grab your Routleys Party Pies today!

FOR more than 60 years Routley’s Bakery has been synonymous with this region – a local family providing beautiful baked goods for local Victor Routley families. Vic and Verna Routley first started baking in 1947. The Original Routleys Store was on Nelson Place in Williamstown though Vic and Verna both grew up in Geelong. After the War in 1947 the couple moved to Williamstown, where Vic worked as a baker before deciding to buy the shop where he had been working and operating Victor Routley it together. Working “days” began at midnight, when they stoked up their big brick lined “scotch” oven, fired with wood or briquettes. They would put the pies in first, when the oven was hottest, followed by cakes and then the delicate sponges.

September Special

In 1971, Vic and Verna Verna Routley handed on the baton to their son Lawrie and his wife Anne, who have expanded the business with the help of their five children (Simon, Penny, Michael, Kate and Sam) to what it is today.

Big band show By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN WAS IT the words or the music? The singer or the band? It’s part of music’s mystery that throws up partnerships that seem like they should click and those that actually do. The synchronicity between Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra was one that saw the singer’s career blossom and the band become more successful than ever. That legacy now falls to musical director Terry Myers who compares the best of the big band era with classical music. “There will always be people who still appreciate the great classics. I think it’s the validity of the music that ensure it doesn’t die,” Myers says. “While the time where big bands were at the top of the pop charts has long since passed, there are still musicians playing in them and people listening to them. “As we travel around, usually after every performance people

arrangers who have ever lived,” Myers enthuses. “Plus we have a band full of wonderful musicians to play them.” The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra celebrates the 100th anniversary of the legendary Frank Sinatra in 2015 with a series of commemorative centennial concert events. Grooving blues hits hot moves TWO OF Melbourne’s top blues performers will strut their stuff at Sleepy Hollow Blues Club’s September gig on Sunday. Fiona Boyes and Dan Dinnen team up as the main act, preceded by the regular jam session where local blues musos are invited to take the stage. Fiona Boyes has been recording and performing internationally for more than 25 years, building a career that has taken her to major festivals and stages in Australia, New Zealand, North America and Europe. She is a veteran recording artist with 13 releases, six international award winning albums, four successive Blues Music Award nominations in four categories, 15 Australian Blues awards, as well as a string of accolades in the folk, jazz, and Americana scene. Boyes has carved out a welldeserved reputation as a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and band leader, and is equally at home on acoustic or electric guitars. Her repertoire is like a blues travelogue. Those who listen to her play will hear pre-war Delta slide, wailing laments, single chord Mississippi Hills grooves, intricate and beautiful Piedmont finger picking, rollicking New Orleans barrelhouse, greasy

THE TURF specialists at Anco Geelong have seen the costly mistakes homeowners make when they lay the wrong kind of lawn. So the Anco experts are always keen to ensure clients get it right the first-time. Martin VanderVlist and Jenny Hudgell have decades of experience in the industry, supplying lawns to homes and sports grounds around the Geelong region and as far as Apollo Bay. The owner-operators of the Anco outlet on Latrobe Tce, Geelong West take the time to ensure that their customers make the right selection for their new lawn so it looks good for years to come. “You have to ensure you have the right variety and take into account factors such as whether there will be dogs in the yard, whether there are children, whether it’s a high traffic area and whether it’s in the sun or in the shade,” Martin advises. “It’s smart to get advice from experts - if it’s not the right lawn it can wear out quickly and then needs to be replaced. You don’t want to be doing that sort of thing twice.” Anco Geelong’s hard-earned reputation comes from offering good service and expert advice. The Geelong West outlet is also stocked with the finest lawn-care products, seed and fetilisers.

EVEN DIY and automotive enthusiasts can obtain professional finishes with professional products with the help of Darby’s Paints. The qualified and expert team at Darby’s Paints deal with the professionals in panel shops around Victoria on a daily basis. So they know what the pros prefer and can offer the same to everyone who wants their pride and joy at its gleaming best. Darby’s Paints’ three stores service hundreds of panel shops right across Victoria, ensuring they are up-to-date with the top products. Among the leading brands supplied by Darby’s Paints is Glasurit, the ultimate premium product. Darby’s also supplies Baslac, a top quality product suitable for smaller panel shops and Salcomix, a commercial vehicle and industrial product. Darby’s also specialises in direct-to-metal finishes, with no priming required. Top supplier DNA offers its ‘genetically modified paints’ in virtual chromes, colour shifting paints and candies with a range of stand-out iridescent colours. There’s also the Por15 rust preventative range, claiming to be the only product that really stops rust permanently. There’s an array of professional standard panel beating equipment and restoration products, spray guns and airbrushes as well. Servicing Geelong for more than 30 years, Darby’s Paints is locally owned and operated. The team takes pride in providing a quality service, using its knowledge and experience to help clients choose the right products to get their vehicles looking brand new again, according to manager Anthony Spanninga. Darby’s Paints is at 413 Moorabool St, Geelong, opposite Kardinia Park. For more information phone 5229 3884.

IT’S THE personal touch that sets Keleman Motors apart. Gary Keleman has been in the business since 1982, so he must be doing something right. His care and attention to detail has enhanced his hard-won reputation in the car repair trade. The personal service includes a drop off and pick up service to the city. Gary is known as a Mazda specialist but his tried and true slogan, ‘Anything on any car’, sums up his approach. “We do all major and minor repairs, including exhaust, brakes, clutches and suspension,” Gary explains. “Plus we do the full range of upgrades and servicing, including air-conditioner re-gassing.” Gary and Mazda go back a long way, including his top qualifications in the repair and servicing of the famous rotary engine. Gary uses only genuine parts in his new-car repair and servicing work. “This way our customers can be sure their factory warranties are not affected.” He says customers should be able to receive dealer level service without paying dealer level prices. “We’re always happy to give a quote so the customer knows exactly what they are up for,” he says. Gary’s workshop boasts the latest in diagnostic and scanner equipment. “We’re proud of the quality of all work we undertake and our competitive rates.” Keleman Motors is at shop 3, 13 Crown St, South Geelong, phone 5229 9555.

IndySport Training partners in triathlon triple treat By PAUL MILLAR TWO GEELONG training partners have taken out gold and silver in the World Triathlon Sprint Championships in Chicago. It was stunning effort with their locally-based coach making it a trifecta, claiming a bronze title in his age group. Kate Bramley and Shari-Ann Livingston claimed first and second, respectively in the 25 to 29-year-old age group with gritty efforts to earn their medals. The athletes had some vocal support as they crossed the line with the green and gold of Australia prominent in the crowd. An elated Livingston said it had been an amazing experience for both of them. “We have trained together for so long and still can’t believe we got gold and silver,” Livingston told the Independent. “We are great training partners and our coach Stephane Vander Bruggen has supported us and got us to this level through all his hard work, taking us to Bali to train and guiding us in exactly what we have to do,” Livingston said. “It is hard finishing the Australian season, then to continue training all through winter to be in peak condition for a world championship in September. “We will have a small break now, but we will be ready again for the Australian season and Gatorade series that starts in November,” Livingston said. “I couldn’t achieve a result like this without my amazing coach, who is more than just a coach and my team-mate and biggest competition, Kate Bramley, who won gold. “Thanks for pushing me in every race and training session,” she said. Belgian-born Vander Bruggen more than shared in the glory of his charges, earning the bronze medal in the male 35 to 39-year-old category.

Warriors to fight on as juniors represent the future By JOSIP ZILIC TWO talented young players who have come through the North Geelong Warriors junior system have won places on representative teams. Fifteen-year-old Thomas Hidic has been selected for Melbourne Victory’s youth team after a successful year with the Football Federation Victoria national training centre. Max Muscat has earned a spot with the Deaf Football Australia team to tour Taipei in the Asia Pacific Games in October taking on Iran, Thailand and Japan.

A down-to-earth Hidic was quick to acknowledge his coaches at North Geelong, Sime Didulica and Ahmad Sulaimi as well as pathways coach Peter Bradley. “They helped me focus and got me to get the best out of myself each session, both physically and technically,” he said. The opportunity will see Hidic travel to Melbourne four or five times a week under the tutelage of full time coaches where he hopes a full time football program will help him take his game to another level.

Muscat began as a six year old with Brunswick Zebras and moved to representing NSW before settling in Colac and joining North Geelong Warriors in 2015. “It was a tough year with lots of injuries in the squad. However we can thank our under 18s coach Ante Sarcevic for the guidance and support he gave us,” Muscat said. “It’s a great opportunity to represent my country and gain experience playing against good quality players and teams under the pressure of Asian pacific qualifiers. “The tournament is well organ-

ised so the professionalism required will be great.” Meanwhile, North Geelong’s season will be on the line tomorrow when it meets Melbourne Victory’s NPL side in a relegation play-off at Port Melbourne. Melbourne Victory led the NPL1 East for much of the season but failed to clinch automatic promotion. On the other hand, North Geelong’s late season form saw it rise from rock bottom to win a spot in the play-off to retain its top division spot.

On the

Warm weather gets anglers top results WITH a hint of warmer weather anglers wasted no time hitting the water. Mark Clarke took a run out of Clifton Springs last Saturday afternoon and after setting a spread of baits one of Mark’s offerings was snapped up by something rather unusual – a Southern Rock Cod of 36cm. Mark mentioned that the rock cod put up a solid fight for its size and was puzzled at first to what exactly he had caught. Not wanting to let the excellent conditions on offer go to waste, Daniel Baden and myself set out from Clifton Springs Friday afternoon. Anchoring just out from the channel at Point Richards we marked promising soundings of snapper. After quickly setting a spread of baits it did not take the snapper long to respond, with both our rods connecting to solid fish. A hectic five minutes later we both managed to land snapper measuring 92cm and 94cm. The snapper took a liking to pilchards and squid on the run in tide. Josh Whitford and Andy Whitford were putting in a few hours last Wednesday night in Corio Bay, also on the hunt for snapper. The pair found success with Josh boating a well-conditioned snapper of over 6kg. While out on the bay those targeting snapper have had no troubles in taking a feed of flathead as a by-catch especially when using pilchard as bait. Queenscliff has started to see greater numbers of squid come on the bite. The water around the pilot boat jetties has been most productive with larger jigs working the best due to the strong tidal influence. Just around the corner at the mouth of Swan Bay squid were also boated just over the grass beds in three to four metres of water. There are still reasonable numbers of snapper to 7kg on the chew offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads in 40 to 50 metres of water. Larger baits such as squid heads are the go with the odd

gummy shark also taken as a by-catch. At times there have been large schools of Australian salmon bursting out in a feeding frenzy but from all reports it’s a case of right place right time to bump into these guys. Inside the Barwon Estuary bream have been on the chew with those using live bass yabbies fished in the upper reaches of the sheepwash banking some chunky fish to 40cm. Mulloway reports have thinned a little but they are still there if you’re persistent. These past few months would have to go down as one of the all-time greatest runs of southern Bluefin tuna south west Victoria has ever seen. Each day reports flood in from Port Macdonald, Portland and Apollo Bay of tuna to 155kg. Some keen anglers have even reported boating two of these giants at one time. With fish still being taken from as far west as Port Macdonald let’s hope this run continues for some time. Freshwater reports slowed this week with Wurdee Boluc giving up the odd redfin for those putting in the hours casting soft plastics from the main rockwall. Terry Norbeck was at Bullen Merri last weekend fishing pilchard fillets on a lightly weighted rig amongst a liberal berley trail, managing to boat a Chinook salmon of 2kg. Other anglers trolling the lake also took salmon of around the same size with most noting the salmon were in excellent condition. Next week, consider chasing the snapper off Clifton Springs with any tide change at first or last light the best time. Once again if able head down to the western district and chase a beast of a tuna while they are still on offer. For the school holidays, St Augustines was stocked with yearling size rainbow trout which is perfect for the kids. Powerbait on a light running sinker rig will do the trick nicely.

SNAPPED UP: Daniel Baden and Chris Pitman got among the action this week too.
