■ Man attacks new live-in partner on their first day together...

Deranged dinner By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

1170560-ACM06-15

A DANDENONG man has told his partner “this is what happens in my country” as he assaulted her for not cooking dinner. Mehmet Akyol, in his rage, allegedly struck his partner’s nose with the palm of his hand in September last year. Later that night, Akyol was still unhappy that a meal hadn’t been cooked and put his hand to the victim’s throat. The victim – who had moved in that day – was pushed over and struck her head. She suffered facial bruising and headaches for days, a court was told on 21 September. “This is what happens in my country,” Akyol allegedly told the victim. “The woman cooks for the man and makes the man happy.” Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that during an altercation in November, the victim was dragged by her legs as she sat on steps, and then manhandled out of the front door. Akyol kicked the left side of her back after she slipped on grass out the front of his house. She called police, who found her in an “emotionally distressed” state and complaining of back pain. In a police interview, Akyol denied the assaults, claiming the “aggressive and violent” partner harmed herself and had been “assaulting herself”. In the early hours of 22 March, an apparently drunk Akyol called out “slut” as he stood outside the victim’s property, in breach of a full intervention order.

When she emerged from the house, he kicked her and punched her to the stomach. Without visible injury, the victim showed police a chain of 35 text messages from Akyol in the past two days. Akyol, who was arrested while hiding in his bathroom, told police he’d done nothing wrong and that the victim had been giving him trouble. Defence lawyer Jeisa Javor tendered psychological evidence to show Akyol suffered memory difficulties – and a possible acquired brain injury – due to three car accidents. She said her client didn’t initiate the stream of texts to the victim for two months prior to the most recent incident. The accused believed his prior unlawful assault conviction involved a “family friend” not the partner, Ms Javor said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen sentenced Akyol to 161 days in custody – which had already been served in pre-sentence detention. He took into account that Akyol’s parents continued to support him, and had available employment. “You’ve been in custody for a significant period of time. People aren’t kept in custody forever.” Mr Vandersteen remanded Akyol – who pleaded guilty – for a community corrections order assessment the next day. He said the order would include a men’s behavioural change program. “The language you used and the attitude to the complainant have to be addressed.”

Anti-radicalisation kits are ‘set to fail’ By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE Islamic Council of Victoria has labelled as “counter-intuitive” the introduction of anti-radicalisation kits into schools It said the kits have already failed in the UK and USA. Greater Dandenong teacher and ICV spokesman Kuranda Seyit said the Radicalisation Awareness Kit released by the federal government on 21 September was a product of “political expediency”. A notorious example of the approach’s “failure” was a Texan boy who was recently arrested when he brought a clock-like contraption to school. “He was mistreated and victimised because he was Muslim, and teachers were trained to report anything suspicious. “It blew out to a controversy. It’s something you don’t want.”

That sort of victimisation played on young people’s minds, Mr Seyit said. “If you want to build resilience and inclusion, it’s counter-intuitive to start talking of radicalisation and linking it with Muslim students.” Mr Seyit preferred the state government’s “balanced” and “comprehensive” approach that promotes student resilience and inclusive schools. He said the Victorian approach was more likely to help youth at risk of being isolated and drifting into criminality It includes new subjects for 2016 such as respectful relationships, and world views and ethical understanding. The method is to challenge stereotypes and behaviour such as prejudice, violence, discrimination and harassment, and teach students

social skills to cultivate respectful relationships. It has been 12 months since Lyndale Secondary College graduate Numan Haider was fatally shot after stabbing police officers in Endeavour Hills. Other former Lyndale students were charged over a foiled terrorist plot targeting Dandenong’s Anzac Day service this year. Department of Education spokesman Bryan Allchin said there would be a focus on prevention - “universal support” for all students plus early intervention for those that are “vulnerable”. However he noted: “Radicalisation is not taking place in the classroom - it’s happening when vulnerable young people are targeted online or outside of the school environment.” As part of its strategy, schools will be urged to engage with community leaders, police and organisa-

tions that can support at-risk young people. The new curriculum will also be supported by programs such as School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS), the Building Resilience Framework, and the existing Bully Stoppers. The SWPBS program is a research-based method aimed at creating a positive school climate and open responsive management from school leaders, staff, students and parents. The resilience-building program will include social-emotional learning teaching material for students to explicitly learn problem solving, coping and help-seeking skills. Last month, the state government announced an $8.6 million, two-year Navigator service pilot that aimed to reconnect 12 to 17-year-olds who were disengaged from schools.

Kids say this yoke is no joke ST MARY’S Primary students put their stamina to the test for a good cause. The Dandenong school raised more than $1800 for a new water bore in Uganda through a wooden yoke challenge on Thursday 17 September. Teacher Margaret Greig said the children sought sponsorship and used yokes to carry buckets of water around the school oval. “As a school this term we’ve been fund-raising for a village in Uganda,” she said. “The whole school’s been doing this together.”

JACK JOHNSON IS THE AUTHOR OF WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES, A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN DANDENONG, HIS YEARS TENDING TO THE CITY’S PIPES AND DRAINS AS A PLUMBER AND BRINGING UP A FAMILY WITH WIFE FRANCES IN THEIR BELOVED HOME IN MACPHERSON STREET.

In a hole lotta trouble to get into the show AS SMALL kids we loved it when a circus came to town and when the Dandenong Agricultural Society staged its annual show. On this particular day, we were sitting with some of my brother Nipper’s mates on the edge of the empty produce market stalls in Clow Street, lamenting the fact that we did not have the money to gain admittance to the showgrounds. At that moment Spiv came past. “What the bloody hell’s wrong with you lot?” he said and on hearing the sad story he said: “There’s a hole under the fence where some kids got into the show earlier this morning.” It was near a large pair of gates in the high corrugated iron fence and beneath the red gum plank baseboard.

JACK LOOKS

BACK JACK JOHNSON

It had obviously been dug by a dog getting in or out of the showgrounds. One of the kids who came from Dandy West, and always seemed to wear a brown checked overcoat, rushed up to the hole and dived in head first and became wedged under the fence with his face in the dirt. Nipper, Tommo and Spidgy grabbed his legs and dragged him yelling and moaning from the hole, leaving

him spitting dirt and laying in the gutter by the roadside. The sounds of the show could clearly be heard from outside the fence. Mr Williams was announcing over the public address system what horses and riders were going over the jumps course. The more we heard these sounds the more urgent our need to get into the show became. Another kid got a small piece of gum tree branch and started to dig the hole wider, but the ground was too hard and the stick kept breaking. Spidgy sneeringly said: “S***! My ferret could dig faster than that.” I suggested that it may be easier to get through the hole by lying on our backs and wriggling through with our

arms by our sides then once we got through to sort of jack-knife under the fence. Nipper, on hearing this reverseentry idea, was the first one up to the hole. There was a sublime expectant hush that came over the group as we waited for that spindly pair of legs to vanish under the fence. Suddenly the moment was shattered by a shrill panicky yell from Nipper. He wriggled back out of the hole with the speed of a tiger snake that he just been whacked with a piece of number eight fencing wire. At the same time someone inside the show ground banged loudly against the double gates and as the yell still echoed and gates rattled one of the kids panicked and screamed: “S***, they’re onto us. They’re coming out the gates.”

In panic, we took off at great speed and did not stop until we reached the bridge over the open drain in McCrae Street. We all listened intently as Nipper told us what had happened on the other side of the fence. He said he had just pulled his arms through the hole and was reaching to pull himself up when both his hands were seized by two large black hands and he found himself staring up into the bearded leering face of a savage jungle head-hunter who was trying to drag him out of the hole. We all listened in amazement and Bricky suggested it was probably someone from one of the sideshow tents trying to frighten him. “Pig’s arse. I know a bloody headhunter when I see one,” Nipper said.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 16 September 1915 Berwick The reception tendered to return wounded Private Ernie Gardiner and Sapper Clemons turned out a pronounced success. Ladies had decorated the hall with bunting and greenery and a large ‘Welcome Home’ was conspicuously exhibited. Under the chairmanship of Cr A’Beckett a very fine musical programme was given. Mrs A’Beckett, Misses Miller and Jones, and Mr T Jennings acted as accompanist. Mr Vieusseux gave the solders a formal welcome and concluded this remarks with an appropriate Jingle entitled “Our Thanks to You”. Private Gardiner replied in an excellent and most interesting speech, detailing his experiences and giving great credit and praise to his comrades the Indian soldiers who fought

and are still fighting shoulder to shoulder with our own boys. Snapper Clemons gave a most humorous account of his experiences, and although badly used up, expressed his desire to get alright again in order to have another “go”. Supper was provided, and one of the best social evening that have eventuated in Berwick for some time was brought to an end. 50 years ago 29 September 1965 True fur seals on Phillip Island Cowes - The colony of seals at Seal Rocks, Phillip Island, which will be under scrutiny of Fisheries and Wild Life research officers over the next five years are true fur seals - eared seals. These seals have small external ears and hind flippers or limbs that are capable of being turned forwards when travelling on land.

They are found in three other places - Lady Percy Island near Port Fairy, on the Gennie and Anser group of islands near Wilson’s Promontory, and on the Skerries, a group of small islands off the mouth of the Wingan River in eastern Victoria. 20 years ago 2 October 1995 Push to make parts locally Many parts now made overseas could be made locally, leading to an increase in exports, manufacturers heard. Alan Oxley, former Chairman of GATT, and now Managing Director of International Trade Strategies last week spoke in favour of import replacement. A display of locally made products which could replace those made overseas aroused the interest of many manufactures at the launch.

Mr Mike Churchin, Assistant Director of Industries Supplies Office Victoria had already launched a similar campaign in Broadmeadows with great success. 5 years ago 27 September 2010 Drink drive hot spot New police statistics show Dandenong and Springvale are among the top 20 drink-driving suburbs in Victoria. Over the past five years 1800 people were booked for drink-driving in Dandenong, making it the seventh highest hop spot for drinkdriving in Melbourne. Springvale featured at no 13 with 1502 people charged with drink-driving. - Compiled by the Dandenong and District Historical Society

Debt led to thefts A MAN accused of “prolifically stealing and breaking into cars in secure underground car parks in Dandenong has been refused bail. Julio Martins had told police he had no other means of repaying a $4000 drug debt, according to a police summary tendered to a court hearing on Monday 21 September. Martins allegedly made full admissions to stealing a car after jemmying a door to an apartment’s underground car park on Cheltenham

Road, Dandenong, about 4am on 26 August. The applicant allegedly found a 1985 red Mazda RX7 with a wound-down driver’s side window and used a sensor found inside the vehicle to open the car park gate. The car was then pushed out onto the street and towed using rope to Martins’s Dandenong address where it was recovered by police that day. At the time, Martins was on bail and a night curfew for 40 other charges, including burglaries, car thefts, car

break-ins and thefts from vehicles since February. He had also failed to appear in court on 15 July on charges of car stealing, handling stolen goods, unlicensed driving and cultivating and possessing cannabis. On 13 August, Martins and two-accused were also allegedly involved in an assault and robbery of a victim seeking rent arrears. Martins denied being involved in the assault but admitted stealing the victim’s bike, according to the police summary.

The applicant has also been charged with 10 car break-ins in secure apartments’ car parks in Dandenong, Clayton, Oakleigh, Highett and Notting Hill between May and July. Among the stolen goods were a $15,000 VW Golf, four bikes of total value $12,000 as well as cash, credit cards and personal papers. He was also charged with stealing number plates from four vehicles parked at Dandenong Plaza, Yarraman railway station, Prah-

ran and Clayton in June and July, and handling stolen car service books stolen from Crown Casino car park on 18 July. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Martins was refused bail because of his “prolific offending while on “strenuous bail conditions. “The offences aren’t the worst I’ve seen, but they’re significant enough. Martins was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 October.

Police and dogs end home siege A NINE-HOUR siege at a Dandenong South home involving a man who was wanted over outstanding warrants ended when police stormed the house. Police had been outside the Tarene Street house since 12.15pm on Monday 21 September with the 30-yearold occupant refusing to come out. About 9.15pm, police officers and their dogs entered the house and arrested the man. The man was taken to hospital with minor dog-bite injuries, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said. Floating on a sea of dreams By CASEY NEILL “THE boat carries the people and their dreams.” Artist Motoko Katsuta Kitano said this was the sentiment behind the Ship of Dreams sculpture, now on display at Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens in Dandenong. She’s been working with Wellsprings for Women, Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre, Springvale Neighbourhood House and more to create multiple boat sculptures. “For countless people around our planet, a boat represents a journey to a better place,” Motoko said. “A boat provides a way of escaping brutal regimes, religious and racial intolerance, oppression and subjugation. “You can only dream of better things. “I am both honoured and humbled to be working with the community groups on this project. “Many of the participants have experienced first-hand some of the horrors mentioned above, but the strength of their spirit continues to drive them.” Work on the boats will continue until the end of the year, each carrying the character and culture of those who build them. The completed sculptures are to be displayed at the Dandenong Library in January. Motoko’s exhibition Food for Eyes (Food for Thought) is also on display at Heritage Hill. She created the collection while an artist in residence at the McCrae Street site in January. Motoko has lived and worked throughout Japan, the USA, Germany, Hungary and Switzerland but

Artist Motoko Katsuta Kitano on her journey to a better place. said that in Dandenong she experienced the greatest diversity of cultures in one city. “Every day I walked around the local area. I see the different houses and think of the stories and histories of the families there,” she said. “Like a thousand books in the library, each house makes me imagine its stories and wonder how it would be if I could become part of these families and their culture.” Food for Eyes (Food for Thought) and Ship of Dreams will be on display at Heritage Hill Mu-

Jail grips after ‘hug’ By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ICE-user who pleaded guilty to persistently visiting and bashing his ex-girlfriend described one of his attacks as not an assault but a “hug”. Samuel George Patch, 25, of Hampton Park, repeatedly breached intervention orders and committed escalating violence against the victim, according to a police summary presented at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 21 September. Patch visited the victim’s Dandenong North house to smoke ice with her, then accused her of being a prostitute and working at a brothel, and asked how much men pay for her, the

court was told. He stayed until the next morning – in breach of a night curfew as part of his bail conditions. At 6am, Patch aggressively pushed the victim onto her bed, grabbed her by the hair and pulled her head towards him. In the process, Patch scratched the victim’s right cheek. She escaped to report the incident to Dandenong police. He told police at the time that he didn’t think his most recent attack on 9 August was an assault. “I see it as a hug,” he said. At the time, Patch was serving a 12-month corrections order which began on 27 January. In September Patch was is-

sued a limited intervention order after assaulting the victim and smashing a mirror and window at her home, the court was told. He was subsequently charged with breaching intervention orders in November, December and February. On one of those occasions, Patch punched the victim to the face after they had spent the day smoking ice together. At another time, he ignored a five-metre ban from the victim by visiting her Clarinda home, punching her to the face and stealing her handbag, purse and phone. She suffered a bruised back, cut lip and black eye as a result.

The handbag was returned by Patch’s brother-in-law two days later. Magistrate Greg Connellan sentenced a smirking Patch to two months’ jail for breaching a corrections order plus a consecutive one months’ jail for his recent offending. When released, Patch must serve an 18-month corrections order, including supervision, judicial monitoring, drug and mental health treatment and behavioural programs. He was ordered not to contact or associate with the victim during the order. “As a young man, it’s a pity to see you in custody but you are

continually using ice and while on ice you assault your girlfriend.” Patch was also fined $500 for two counts of unlicensed driving and cannabis possession. Mr Connellan said he’d shown a “hell of a lot of faith” in the accused. The 90-day jail term – which included 49 days of pre-sentence detention – was “sufficient” only if Patch complied with the future corrections order. “It seems in my mind that one month without a corrections order wouldn’t cut it. “If you don’t comply with the corrections order, bring your toothbrush.”

On track to beat cancer cycle By CASEY NEILL A KEYSBOROUGH man is getting on his bike throughout October to fight kids’ cancer. Henry Wan has signed up for the Great Cycle Challenge to raise funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI). Participants can ride anywhere, anytime throughout the month and a mobile application will track their progress. Mr Wan started regularly riding on weekends four years ago and has since participated in many charity and fund-

raising rides throughout Victoria. “I haven’t been riding much these last few months with the cold and wet weather in Melbourne,” he said. “Then one day last month I learned about this Great Cycle Challenge event on Facebook and I thought ‘I should do this’. “I have been very blessed with three healthy kids – who are now 21, 20 and 17 – and would like to help those less fortunate. “And it will also help get me back into some regular riding!”

Mr Wan signed up and asked his boys to sponsor him instead of getting him a Father’s Day gift. “I originally intended it to be a small immediate family thing, until one of the boys posted my challenge on Facebook,” he said. “Next thing I know, donations started coming in from family members including those from overseas. “I have so far raised slightly over $500 and therefore the pressure is on. “I will be riding my target of 500 kilometres

in October rain, hail or shine.” The annual event started in 2013 and last year raised more than $2.1 million. CMRI director Professor Roger Reddel said funds raised would accelerate the search for new treatments for childhood cancer. “We are working towards a new form of treatment that is designed to target every type of cancer,” he said. Bypass is ‘missing’ from maps THE Dandenong Bypass is missing from online maps and holding back Keysborough South. That’s according to Keysborough South Action Group, which called on people to report the issue to Google Maps and Melways. The volunteer group run by local residents is running a petition calling for a new bus route to service Keysborough South and a vocal campaign for a new primary school for the growing suburb. “The bypass is the key to both the bus and the school campaign,” the group said on its Facebook page. “The problem is that on both online Google maps (Earth arterial view) and street directory (Melways) it is still shown as under construction even though it was opened in December 2012. “Someone viewing either of these maps online may think it’s not an issue for the community.”

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… LITTLE Day Out, the Full Moon Festival and the Dandenong and District Orchid Society Show - it was all happening in Greater Dandenong on Sunday. And Journal photographer Rob Carew was there to capture all the fun, food and flowers. Visit www.dandenong.starcommunity.com.au to view his snaps from all three events straightaway and keep an eye on next week’s Journal for a selection of shots. BE WARNED - birds in Johnston Street, Dandenong South, are rather territorial. A Journal reporter found this out the hard way when a particularly feisty noisy miner crashed into their head not once, but twice,

as they left an interview last week. WE’RE not sure many Gateway Industries AGM guests were willing to admit they’d spotted the classifieds notice advertising the event. The disability employment provider’s president Russell Smith brought along a copy to the 21 September event at Dandenong Club for those who missed it, highlighting an adjoining advertisement spruiking “ladies $80 special” and “Club Keys”. “Our ad is just next door,” he said. MR SMITH was in good company as he read the candidates for the incoming committee, with many sharing his surname. “They’re all legit... and were not necessarily related!” he said. GATEWAY’S accountant asked Rotary Club of Noble Park president

Chris Hansen to deliver the organisation’s financial report. “He told me he was flying out... that really worried me!” he said. It was just as well no one took up Mr Hansen’s offer to take questions on the report. “Good, I probably wouldn’t be able to answer it.” DINNER conversation at the AGM unearthed a rare direct connection to The Beatles. Liverpudlians Phil Lunt and wife Ann recalled watching the music legends when they were simply another band on an evening line-up at the Cavern Club - and having a chat to them post-show. Ann even recalled the late Cilla Black taking her coat when she was a cloak room attendant at the club before her big break.

THERE were tense times on Robinson Street Dandenong last week. On Tuesday a driver escaped with minor injuries after his ute was crushed against a traffic signal pole. The next day, the police bomb squad used its robot to check a suspicious bag left in a car park. Ninety minutes later, the scene was cleared. The bag contained groceries.

GATEWAY Industries employee Mark Hutton endured bullying and verbal abuse at work every day for more than two years at his previous job. The Dandenong-based nonprofit employs people with disabilities and Mr Hutton was a guest speaker at its AGM at Dandenong Club on Monday 21 September. He said working at Gateway for the past three years had restored his self-esteem. “I have made a lot of friends who are like my family,” he said. Mr Hutton said he stuck it out in open employment “even though it hurt inside”. “I had to learn to cope with it and it was stressful,” he said. But he suffered a mental breakdown and needed counselling to recover. “I now feel happy and wanted,” he said. City of Casey Councillor Amanda Stapledon said Mr Hutton had “shown resilience, decency and tenacity”. She spoke about the council’s support for people with disabilities, including programs to promote social inclusion and disability-friendly facilities. Cr Stapledon also spruiked Livvi’s Space in Lyndhurst, which was designed to include children of all abilities and officially opened on 13 September. She said Gateway Industries workers who maintained parks and gardens throughout the municipality left it looking beau-

tiful. “We are grateful for the work that Gateway Industries employees do in our city,” she said. “They put their heart and soul into what they do.” Gateway CEO Alan Warwick said workers took care of litter patrol and bin and street furniture cleaning in City of Greater Dandenong. “We are able to ensure that recreation reserves, parks and streets in the City of Greater Dandenong are maintained in a clean and acceptable standard that allows the residents and general communities to enjoy the facilities provided,” he said. Mr Warwick said the team each year removed about 15 tonnes of rubbish, cleaned seats, drinking fountains and bike racks and more. The Gateway team also maintains gardens and grounds at retirement villages, factories

and businesses. It completes several woodwork projects, packages air filters and timing belts and labels water bottles. Mr Warwick said Gateway sales in 2014-‘15 increased $60,000 on the previous year, and that New Skills was training employees in Certificate I in Work Education. “This will assist our employees in the understanding of what is required by them in the workplace, and also how to apply for employment in open employment,” he said. President Russell Smith said Gateway was now in its 31st year and it was tremendous to see so many people at the AGM. “To see our folk happy and involved in our community, with a sense of purpose in all they do is to realise what a real benefit Gateway is to their sense of well-being and belonging to society,” he said.

Death follows dispute By ANEEKA SIMONIS A MAN who imprisoned and injured a Noble Park man in his own home has been sentenced to a community corrections order. Gino Rachele, 42, was sentenced on Thursday 3 September after pleading guilty to one charge of recklessly causing injury and falsely imprisoning a Noble Park man who was found dead by police at the scene of the incident. At 2.45am on Wednesday 29 January 2014, Rachele and his partner Kristy Robb went to

Mr Matthews’s home to pick up items kept in the man’s Noble Park bungalow. The Supreme Court heard Ms Robb had sublet the bungalow at the rear of the premises earlier that month to Ms Robb and a number of items were being held as collateral for outstanding rental money that was allegedly owed to Mr Matthews. The pair unlawfully entered the bungalow and began collecting items before Mr Matthews became aware of the intrusion and confronted them. In court, Rachele said he

heard yelling, screaming, movement and banging. The prosecution argued during this time Ms Robb had assaulted Mr Matthews who sustained blunt force trauma injuries. Rachele, who said he saw Mr Matthews holding something in his hand as he stood in the doorway, tackled the man to the ground from behind, pinning him down with his knee. After hearing Mr Matthews elicit a “distinct cry of pain” Rachele removed his knee, letting the man get to his feet. Rachele then pushed Mr Matthews into the lounge room,

holding it closed so he could not get out. He closed off other exit points being attempted by Mr Matthews in his bid to escape, holding him captive in his own home before fleeing with Ms Robb. Mr Matthews contacted police at 2.53am, saying he had been “bashed by a woman and a bloke who come to get some stuff”. Police attended the home a short time later to find Mr Matthews dead in the bathroom. The prosecution said Mr Matthews suffered multiple areas of blunt force trauma, including several

lacerations to the scalp, bruising to the chest and limbs. In sentencing Rachele, the court found he did not enter Mr Matthews’s home with the intention of causing injury to the man and was unaware that he had sustained serious injury during the incident. The court suggested Rachele injured and imprisoned Mr Matthews to avoid further physical confrontation between he and Mr Robb. Rachele, who had no prior convictions, was sentenced to a one-year community corrections order.

Tutor teaches students what he needs to learn By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS SHOAIB Doostizadah knows first-hand the challenges for newly-arrived students. He’s put those lessons into practice as co-founder and tutor of maths, physics and English at a Australian Hazara students’ group in Dandenong for the past six years. As for what makes a good tutor, Shoaib said they should not assume they know everything. “Be open and honest. Just recognise the fact that it’s a two-way street – you’re actually learning also. “If you acknowledge that, you, as a person, will grow and your student will enjoy the relationship.” Shoaib, a recent aerospace

engineering graduate, and the group’s other Afghan-speaking tutors have helped more than 150 students from refugee and migrant backgrounds to reach university. His efforts earned him the Outstanding Tutor award at the Centre for Multicultural Youth’s 2015 MY Education Awards this month. The recognition of his efforts to give back to the community was humbling, he said. When Afghan-born Shoaib arrived from Pakistan as a 17-year-old refugee in 2006 he had done just a “little bit” of schooling. He felt “bamboozled” by his new homeland for quite some time. English classes and several

“understanding” tutors helped him through Noble Park Secondary College, his VCE and then to RMIT University. “I’ve had a personal experience of what it’s like to be in a new country and not knowing how things worked.” The hard work isn’t over for Shoaib – who said aerospace engineering jobs are more common in the US and Europe than in Australia. “We don’t build components for aircraft here.” He has landed a job as an engineer with airline Jetstar, however. The weekly tutoring sessions are at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School. Phone 0411 285 071 for details.

Education Minister James Merlino presents Shoaib Doostizadah his outstanding tutors award.

Jail threat over attack By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN faced further jail after being found guilty of lighting spray from an aerosol can near his ex-partner’s face. Andrew James Walker, of Mulgrave, had been on appeal bail and a corrections order at the time of the incident at the victim’s Dandenong South home on 30 August. Walker had just appealed a four-month jail term at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court six days earlier for family violence intervention order breaches against the same victim. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Tanique McFarlane told the court on Monday that

Walker had drunk a bottle of 18 per cent alcohol “shaken premium smoothie” mix when he arrived at the victim’s house about 1am on 30 August. He was at the time banned from being with 200 metres of the address when alcohol-affected. Walker invited the ex-partner to central Dandenong where they bought two more smoothie mix bottles, then smoke and drank on the banks of Dandenong Creek. The court was told Walker became frustrated and punched the victim to the right side of her head. She was followed home by him despite telling him to leave. At her home, Walker picked

up a Rexona aerosol can and lit a flame near her face. The victim said she could feel heat from the fire but was protected from injury by her cap. Walker then left and was arrested in an alcohol-affected state by police when he returned that evening. Police stated Walker was too aggressive to be interviewed at the time. Walker initially denied punching the victim repeatedly in the thigh during a drinking session behind Waverley Gardens shopping centre in April, but pleaded guilty during Monday’s sentence indication hearing.

During the altercation, the victim bit Walker on the chest. He followed her to a nearby friend’s house to sleep overnight. Defence lawyer Bernard Keating said the “penny might have dropped” for Walker now that he faced his first prison stint, and he had attended behavioural change and treatment as part of his corrections order. “There’s a number of things that can be admired about him. “At first blush, he drinks too much and is violent but there’s also positive (aspects).” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Walker needed to address his violent behaviour fuelled by his drinking habit – self-estimat-

ed at about one bourbon bottle a day. Mr Vandersteen noted Walker’s most recent violence occurred despite having an appeal with a jail term “hanging over his head”. “If your client doesn’t address his behaviour, the chances of the complainant being hurt or killed are very high.” Walker pleaded guilty to all charges after Mr Vandersteen indicated a five months’ jail sentence, followed by a corrections order. “He’s not going to get a straight (jail) term,“ Mr Vandersteen said. “He can’t, not with those issues.”

Waste drive draws trail garage mates together REDUCING waste and making mates is what the Garage Sale Trail is all about. Greater Dandenong Council is encouraging residents to take part in the Saturday 24 October event, now in its fifth year and also designed to promote reuse, create awareness about illegal dumping and stimulate local economies. Mayor Sean O’Reilly said Garage Sale Trail helped people to think creatively about how they

could reuse items that might otherwise be put out for waste collection and possibly end up in landfill. “The Garage Sale Trail is a great way to get to know your neighbours and connect with the broader community, whilst raising money for yourself or others,” he said. “It’s a grassroots event that has swept across the country, so we are pleased to be part of something bigger that’s making some positive change.” Last year, the average

Garage Sale Trail seller made more than $300 and 13 new community connections on the day. Once registered at garagesaletrail.com.au, sellers can personalise a webpage and list items for sale. The site also includes tips and tools to help sellers promote their sales locally. Sellers who register before 25 September will receive a pack designed to ensure a successful garage sale.

IN BRIEF Fast food fail INTRUDERS tried to break into an Endeavour Hills pizza restaurant and the fish and chip shop next door, but were forced to leave emptyhanded. The intruders attempted to jimmy open the back door of the Heatherton Road fish and chip shop, but when unsuccessful they then moved to the front of the store and managed to gain entry between 11pm on Saturday 19 and 9am on Sunday 20 September. The intruders ransacked the store but nothing was stolen, as no cash had been kept on the premises. They also tried to get inside the pizza parlour next door, but were unable to break in.

A MAN has been unable to explain to police how he has been found with a gunshot wound in Dandenong early on Tuesday morning. The 31-year-old was discovered in Leed Street about 1.50am. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the man was unable to tell police where the shot occurred or how the leg injury was sustained. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

New stolen generation By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS FRIGHTENED parents with disabilities are not registering their children’s births because their previous children have been taken away from them, according to a south-east based advocate. And Michelle de Hommel, who has successfully raised six children and is the head of Parents With a Disability, said recent changes to child protection laws could create a “new stolen generation”. Ms de Hommel said she knows of parents with a disability who, out of fear of losing their kids because the Child Protection Service says they can’t look after them, are avoiding regis-

tering their births or are fleeing interstate. Her group, the Law Institute of Victoria and the Office of the Public Advocate have spoken out against the change, which mandates courts to order that children who are out of home for 12 months are put into permanent care. The natural parents then have access to their children four times a year until they turn 18. Ms de Hommel has “joined the dots” between this new focus on “permanent care” to a highprofile campaign to relax adoption laws of Australian children. The losers are parents with a disability, she said.

Her group advocates for a boost in state-funded support above the current three-hours-aweek of assistance afforded by the Department of Health and Human Services. “The money is just not going to parents, who may need just a few more hours of support.” Colleen Pearce, the state’s Public Advocate, said on Tuesday 22 September that children were being removed from parents with disabilities at a much higher rate than parents without disabilities. She said the child protection law changes would be “devastating” for parents with disabilities trying to retain their children.

“Disability is assumed to be a risk to children,” Ms Pearce said. “There is no credible evidence to support this assumption.” Ms Pearce said the DHHS was prone to put “negative scrutiny” over parents with a disability rather than giving support and encouragement. “In a risk-averse system, parents with disabilities are being assessed as being inherently at risk of poor parenting, even before it is tested and without supports to assist success. “Research shows that it is overwhelmingly more beneficial for children to live in their biological family home whether or

not their parent has a disability.” Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos said a number of family services and parenting supports were available including individual support packages, case management, aids and equipment, respite and behaviour intervention support. “All new child protection practitioners receive specific training on parents with a disability to ensure they receive the appropriate support required, often in very stressful circumstances. “DHHS will carefully consider the Office of the Public Advocate’s report.”

Inspired to keep trying for career LYNDALE Secondary College students got a taste of working life after school during a recent work “inspiration” course. Over three days, the students got a behind-the-scenes look at different jobs at employment agency Acquire Learning - such as IT, business operations and media. Then they talked about the types of vocations that suited each of their personalities, and got one-to-one advice on how to crack those jobs. Year 11 student Natasha Kaboukas, 17, who is undecided between pursuing disability

work and teaching art, said Acquire employees told her about their struggles to find the ideal job. “One said you’ve just got to keep your head up. “If I don’t get the entry score I want, there are always other pathways.” The Work Inspiration program is a partnership between Acquire Learning and benevolent charity The Smith Family. The charity’s chief executive Dr Lisa O’Brien said such meaningful work experience helped children break the cycle of disadvantage.

We have over 48 staff. We speak more than 10 different languages. We will guide you to owning your first home, your ideal family home. And we will guide you in the best way to invest in the current real estate market!

LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY INVESTMENTS? We are 1 principal owner of 6 offices in the franchise network of over 700 offices The Property Management team at our 6 offices are known for being highly organised and highly adaptable. All three managers have over 15 years of experience in the real estate industry. The team is hardworking conscientious, pride themselves on the level of care and attention to all tasks. Undertaking stringent tenant selection, the team is responsible and efficient; LJ Hooker team ensures that the portfolio runs as smoothly as possible.

Chris, Roeun and Robert Testimonial The approach at LJ Hooker Glen Waverley is completely different and extremely refreshing. LJ Hooker has handled my properties for a long time and they are by far the best property managers I have ever worked with. They understand the market as well as the needs of both owner and tenant. They found several tenants for my properties and on all occasions I have been extremely happy with the tenants and also the level of service. When there have been maintenance issues, the property manager has found quality, professional tradesmen and no job has required re-work. On one occasion when the tenant caused the maintenance issue, they worked with them to resolve the problem. Having lived interstate for the past 12 months I could completely relax about my properties, knowing LJ Hooker Glen Waverley would look after them. I would not hesitate to recommend the LJ Hooker Property Managers Roeun, Chris and Robert to anyone who is seeking a managing agent. Yours sincerely, Chris and Jennifer Anderson

They understand that property is a major investment; their client needs to feel their property is in safe hands and that it will be managed meticulously.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to secure a piece of history at Tulliallan. Tulliallan is defined by its heritage listed elm trees which will frame this spectacular parkland, which is complete with walking and bike trails, community picnic shelter and barbecue area. It has a superior court location and only 20 lucky residents will have the luxury of an exclusive outlook to the Elm Tree Gardens community parkland on its lots ranging up to 757 square metres.

Not only will buyers be a proud land owner in the south-east’s most premiere location, they will now stamp their name on Tulliallan’s best land! The Historic Elm Tree Park will set the stage for the most pristine location within Tulliallan. The majestic elm trees will create a unique shaded alcove where residents can relax in the park with a book, cook up a barbecue with friends and family or explore the cycling paths that meander throughout the community. More than 250 lots have

been sold since the initial launch in December 2014, averaging 25 lots per month. The first three stages have now been completed and houses are well under construction, with stages four, five, six seven and eight currently being built. SALES SPREE ON BOARD ENZO RAIMONDO

CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria

If you think you’ve seen a lot of real estate boards on display this year, you’re right. It’s been a very busy 12 months for property sales across Victoria. The appetite for settling and investing in regional areas has never been stronger and we’re seeing solid sales activity across the state. The latest REIV data shows several records have already been broken in 2015. Sales volumes are the

highest on record with an estimated 84,000 sales transacted so far this year - up 8 per cent on last year’s figures. Of those transactions, just over 12,000 were in regional Victoria, a 22 per cent increase when compared to the same period last year. Regional areas have contributed to the state’s high sales volumes with several towns recording significant sales growth of more than 100 per

cent in the 12 months to 30 June. Clifton Springs on the Bellarine Peninsula had the highest increase in transactions, up from 46 sales in June 2014 to 117 at the end of June 2015. This was followed by Yarrawonga, up from 35 sales to 75 over the year, and Wallan and New Gisborne in the Melbourne commuter belt where sales also increased significantly. In the case of New Gisborne, sales have

doubled in the past 12 months. Some of the state’s other top-performing areas include Churchill in east Victoria (75 per cent), Benalla (61.5 per cent) and Shepparton (39.4 per cent). Meanwhile, Victorians clearly love coastal locations with Geelong, Torquay, Barwon Heads, Highton and East Geelong all recording strong annual sales growth of at least 22 per cent.

Bad year blamed on cuts

SPRING Parks Primary School has become a haven for honing English skills. Each Thursday it hosts about 50 women who are eager to improve their ability to converse. Principal Julie Fisher said the program had been running for 15-plus years. “There are some older women there who really struggle to pick up English but they come along for more of the social aspect,” she said. “Some are parents and relatives. A lot aren’t, as well. “They’ve just always seen it as a venue where they can come and learn English.” Ms Fisher said the school community was about 85 per cent Asian - mostly Vietnamese plus Cambodian and Chinese. “We used to have about 60 children from Samoa, Tonga and New Zealand. That’s now about 30,” she said. “A lot of Africans came through from the Sudan but they’ve started to move on. “At the moment we’re finding Indians are coming through but they’re coming in speaking English, because a lot of them are professionals. “When the enterprise hostel was up here in Westall Road they were coming in straight off the boat and straight to our school and there was no English with mum, dad or the kids. “Now it’s very rare to get a child in with no English. “Now there’s language schools all around and they’re advised to go there for six months.” Anne Brown became a tutor with the English group about seven years ago after a friend encouraged her to come along. She’s watched women improve their English and increase their confidence. “People know English but when you try and use it quickly in a shop it’s very hard,” she said.

KEYSBOROUGH Learning Centre has made it through a tough year with a small surplus. General manager Neil Cooper said KLC student enrolments in accredited courses dropped about 30 per cent in the first six months of the past financial year, “causing us to complete some of our programs in 2014 at a loss”. “Student feedback suggests most of this decline was the result of financial factors - funding and eligibility cutbacks and employment concerns being the most prevalent,” he said. Mr Cooper said a Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) audit late in 2014 cost more than $14,000, “not counting the time of staff and teachers to remediate a number of issues”. He said that a number of classes did not have the numbers to proceed this year. “KLC needed to cut two night classes and a day class, as well as materially reduce administrative costs,” he said. “However, this focus has certainly allowed the centre to finish the June 2015 year with a small surplus and also to go into the next year with a more secure financial footing.

Staying speech sharp

Phuong listens to tutor Margaret McDonald. “We have people arriving with only a few words. If they stay long enough they really improve. “We have one or two students with special needs children and it makes all the difference to them.” Ms Brown said many participants were grandparents who could speak to their children in their native tongue but now couldn’t communicate with their Englishspeaking grandchildren. Most students come from China, Cambodia, Vietnam, India and Sudan, and they’re grouped by ability. “We’ve had as many as four men but usually it’s women because it’s during the day,” Ms Brown said.

“We do not set a program - each tutor decides what topics to cover, according to students’ needs and interests. “Most tutors are ex-teachers, some with qualifications in ESL.” AMES has supported the group with training courses, workshops and other resources. “All tutors are volunteers. Students pay 50 cents a class to cover costs of photocopying,” she said. Students are also welcome to attend an excursion, held once a term and ranging from lunch at a local restaurant to galleries, the Botanical Gardens, Docklands and a farm. A friend recommended Phuong Phan

Lynn Bamford, Van, Anne Brown and Pau enjoy the lessons. 141986 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS from Springvale South give the lessons a go. “I studied English in Vietnam but I’ve improved my English here,” she said. “In Vietnam my teacher was Vietnamese so they didn’t show me much about the voice.”

Golf plan annoys Greens GREENS MP Nina Springle has raised an objection in State Parliament to Keysborough Golf Club’s plan to convert its greenwedge golf course into a housing estate. On 17 September, Ms Springle asked about Planning Minister Richard Wynne’s attitude to “removing 76 hectares from the green wedge so that a property developer can make a killing?” She said Mr Wynne had until mid-October to respond to her constituency question. A spokeswoman for Mr Wynne recently told the Journal the plan was “yet to be considered”. “The Andrews Labor government has committed to maintaining and enhancing the green wedge and, while we will not pre-empt any decisions, future applications would be considered with that pledge in mind.” The club’s plan involves moving to a yetto-be built golf course and training centre about 2.5 kilometres away to 256356 Pillars Road. Under the move, the current site at Hutton and Springvale roads would be sold to developer Intrapac - subject to the state government agreeing to rezone it for residential development.

Drug sentence appeal By ANEEKA SIMONIS DRUG smugglers who were convicted over importing up to $15 million worth of heroin to properties in the Greater Dandenong area have had their sentencing appeal submissions denied. Cambodian born pair Chhodaphea Kev and Sambath Sok were each found guilty of importing and possessing a com-

mercial quality of a border controlled drug in April last year. The 16-day trial in the County Court found the men had organised for five parcels containing a total of 12.36 kg of heroin - eight times the prescribed commercial quantity - to be sent from Cambodia to their rental properties in Keysborough and Springvale. The first parcel, containing 2.4kg of heroin, was delivered to

the rental property in Springvale on 4 April 2012. The other four parcels were examined by Customs officers, before three were delivered to the Keysborough rental on 13 April 2012. Kev picked up the parcels and then went to the Springvale property where he and Sok were arrested by police. The court heard the imported

heroin was valued between $8 and $15 million wholesale. Each received a 14 year and nine month jail term with an 11 year non-parole period. Kev and Sok applied for leave to appeal their drug convictions but their submissions were thrown out by the Supreme Court at the start of September. Kev’s legal representatives argued his sentence, in compari-

son with the sentence imposed on Sok, offended the principle of parity. Sok applied for leave to appeal his sentence based on the belief the sentence was too excessive and did not make fair considerations to his prospects for rehabilitation and contributing drug addiction problems. Both submissions were denied by the court.

Dandy Pig is rapt about raptor friend By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE Dandy Pig has a new friend in town. Keeping watch over the city from the balcony of the Civic Centre the inflatable dinosaur named Puck has taken pride of place overlooking Lonsdale Street. Dandenong’s newest prehistoric pal was designed by artist Felipe Reynolds and theatre maker and director Ed Boyle for the launch of the Greater Dandenong Children’s Festival. Erected on Friday 18 September, Puck’s family have set up camp in the foyer at the Drum Theatre where they will stay until Sunday 4 October. Now in its fourth year the Children’s Festival has taken on the theme of dinosaurs and has more than 100 scheduled activities. Mayor Sean O’Reilly dubbed Dandenong a “child friendly city”

Welcome to Dandenong, Puck, we hope you enjoy your stay! and said events such as these showcase how important children and families are to the community. “There is something for everyone during the Children’s Festival and the fact it runs over school holidays gives all families the chance to have some fun,” Cr O’Reilly said. Fond memories for family By CASEY NEILL FORMER Keysborough footballer Alexander ‘Alex’ Mackay has died at the age of 97. His daughter Thelma Churchill said he passed away on 18 September and was survived by his wife Beth, 97. She said had been a prominent member in the Dandenong and the Keysborough areas and was due to be buried at Kilcunda Cemetery on Friday 25 September at 10.30am. “He used to play cricket, football and tennis for Keysborough and Dandenong,” Ms Churchill said.

“He worked on the market gardens at Keysborough. “He played full back for Keysborough for many years. He was always bald but they all called him old baldy. “Mum and dad were given a lovely send-off by the Keysborough football club when they left to come back onto dad’s father’s dairy farm at Woolamai, behind the Woolamai Racecourse. “We still have a nice chair that was presented to mum and dad when they left Keysborough.” Ms Churchill was the eldest of Alex’s five daughters. “I started school when

they lived on the Kingston property at the end of Bennet Street,” she said. The family later moved to Chandler Road in Keysborough. “We used to have to ride pushbikes three miles into the school,” Ms Churchill said. “Then we used to have to ride into Dandenong for tennis lessons on a Saturday and back into Dandenong for Sunday school. “Mum and dad always did their shopping in Lonsdale Street. “We have lots of memories in Dandenong.”

Plaza to be sold for $200m

By CASEY NEILL

DANDENONG Plaza is up for sale. Owner The GPT Group expects the 57,116 square metre shopping centre to fetch $200 million. JLL’s Australian head of retail investments Simon Rooney will market it via an International Expressions of Interest (EOI) campaign which will close on Thursday 5 November. The centre includes Kmart and Target department stores, Coles, Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets, Reading Cinemas, 14 mini major tenancies, 142 specialty stores, 24 kiosks, 15 ATMs and car parking for 3248 vehicles. Last year the centre unveiled a rejuvenation of the former Myer store area and new shops in Aldi, JB Hi-Fi Home, Daiso and Trade Secret, which Mr Rooney said had enjoyed solid sales growth. He said there was record demand for large shopping centres and he expected Dandenong Plaza to be keenly sought given its significant size, recent successful tenancy remixing and long-term major tenants.

POTTERS around the world are making masterpieces with clay made in Dandenong. Clayworks Australia makes an appearance in canoe-shaped sculptures that appear to glide through the Dandenong Civic Centre foyer. “Some of those are bone china, but one of them is made out of southern ice porcelain,” director Max Campbell said. “Southern ice porcelain is one of the best studio porcelains in the world and we export it to Singapore, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, the UK, the US and New Zealand. “It’s very white, very translucent and it’s fully vitrified (glasslike). “We mix the materials in a big plunger with water. It’s like a food processor with a 54-horsepower motor on it.” Mr Campbell said machines then sieved, filtered and de-aired the mixtures. “The production process is a bit unusual. It’s a relatively expensive production process but you get a very good product at the end,” he said. He said porcelain was at the top end of Clayworks’ 35-strong clay range. It’s about half clay, one quarter silica and one quarter feldspar, which is a chemical agent that melts. “When you make glass you use feldspar and silica as well, but you don’t use the clay,” he said. “Schools don’t want to use that sort of material – it’s very difficult to work with. “We make school clay, we make clay for hand working and we produce terracotta pottery clay.” Clayworks uses clay mined in Bacchus Marsh and Axedale in Victoria and from Gulgong, near Mudgee in New South Wales. “This used to be one of the premium pottery clays in Australia but, unfortunately, the pit is coming to an end,” he said. “We’re dealing with a finite resource and have to constantly adapt our techniques.” Will Mulder started Clayworks more than 30 years ago. “He was a potter and he started making clay for his own use. He started selling potter’s clay and it just grew from there,” Mr Campbell said. “We’d probably have an output of maybe 100 tonnes a month. “Schools are our biggest market, followed by artists and potters and there are still a few production houses around. “Robert Gordon Pottery in Pakenham is one of our customers.” Mr Campbell came on board 18 years ago. “People in other industries do it because they have to do it,” he said. “People in this industry do it because

Brad and Wally at work. 144420 they want to do it. Your customers become your friends.” He also loves to see the creations from sculptors like James Cattell, which often come back to Clayworks for glazing and firing. The company also regularly hosts sculpture workshops. “We make rectangular blocks of clay. It’s just fantastic to see what people make,” he said. Mr Campbell said the industry was about 15,000 years old but there was still

Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS opportunity for innovation. “Traditionally, you would fire at earthenware or stoneware. Earthenware’s about 1100 degrees, stoneware’s about 1280 degrees,” he said. “We brought in a number of clays that fire in between those. “They have the performance of a highfired body but at a lower temperature and that saves a lot of energy.” Factory manager, director and partowner Doug Hocken has been with Clayworks since 1990.

An example of James Cattell’s work.

He said Clayworks customers were also innovating to combat cheap Chinese imports. “Little studio potters are now eking their way into that part of the market place and supplying designer, one-off type ware,” he said. “The cafe set is demanding a personalised experience. Part of that personalised experience is having your food served on a unique plate.” Visit www.clayworksaustralia.com for more information.

UNEMPLOYMENT rates are climbing but there’s good news for young people. South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) CEO Andrew Simmons told a Migrant Youth Employment Forum at Dandenong Civic Centre on 15 September that jobs were on the way. He said youth unemployment rates were the worst they’d been for 14 years and many entry-level jobs had disappeared. But Mr Simmons said the Department of Employment predicted that about 45,000 jobs would be created in the south east over the next five years, with the greatest number appearing in the health care and social assistance sectors. He said that coupled with the 30,000 jobs retirees would vacate in the next five years, there would be 75,000 job opportunities in the region. The forum audience also received advice from Bunnings Victoria regional learning co-ordinator Darren Moulder, Target regional manager Paul Newnham, Skillinvest operations manager Paul Konig, Metalsa Australia HR manager Esperanza Sugay and Wurth Australia human capital manager Kelly Alford.

Sri Samy is heading an effort to employ asylum seekers and refugees in social enterprises. 107644 Picture: ROB CAREW

TERMED AN ‘ANGEL’ BY COLLEAGUES, SRI SAMY HAS TIRELESSLY, VOLUNTARILY LED EFFORTS TO HELP HUNDREDS OF REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS SETTLE IN MELBOURNE’S SOUTH-EAST FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS. HER NEXT CHALLENGE IS TO UP-SKILL NEW ARRIVALS FOR WORK. CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS REPORTS.

Angel is not just a friend By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS SRI Samy is a CEO without a salary. As head of volunteer group Friends of Refugees, she’s poured in not only 50-plus hours a week but her own money. Her donations are spontaneous. To fuel up the group’s delivery truck, which supplies furniture and food to impoverished new arrivals in Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong. To feed a family newlyreleased from a detention centre who are dropped off at a house without basic essentials such as mattresses. “I believe I’m lucky to have food on my table and a roof over my head. “I’m not rich but I have enough to lead a decent life. I don’t have time to reflect on my future. “My mother said to me the person who planted the seed will reap the harvest.” Sri is now creating social enterprises to help new arrivals garner an income. In recent years, many asylum seekers released into the community were powerless to improve their plight, banned from working under their visa conditions. Most are without serviceable English and job-skills training, for starters. Without government funding, Friends of Refugees collects bikes for children at Christmas, set up a men’s woodwork shop, women’s support groups, English and work skills classes, children’s homework tuition and pitched in with food, beds, fridges and other necessities. Sri is frustrated the ‘professionals’ such as governmentfunded agencies and the three tiers of government can’t do or spend more. It’s a system that “doesn’t care enough”. Employed people from funded agencies help only 9-5 and within their budgets, Sri says. They often refer clients to Friends of Refugees for a chopout.

“The federal government just handballs it,” she said. “They just want these people to go back (to their homelands) in frustration. After two years of talking to Greater Dandenong Council, she says a body to co-ordinate the agencies and volunteers helping asylum seekers has still not been set up. “They say they don’t have the money with rates-capping and things. “They just do the symbolic things. They design an action

for help. One day, she asked a household of two newlyreleased families, each with several kids, what they needed. They said they wanted mattresses and kitchen utensils. “I noticed they didn’t have anything to eat. They reluctantly said ‘we desperately need food.’ “They had just been released from the detention centres and had nothing.” After buying them vegetables and other foods, Sri told them: “We will give you every-

plan and beautiful flags but what have they done for asylum seekers who are actually living there. “We have so many meetings but they’re wasting my time.” A wife, mum and trained architect, Sri says her personal and professional lives are on hold. Her day starts about 4am to trawl through emails - then the school run and off to work where she picks up volunteers, runs programs, works out what programs are needed. She picks up her daughter Krisha from school, followed by more meetings and visits to the detention centre. It can be late at night before she gets home. Sri has been the main-stayer of a group of like-minded people who started Friends of Refugees in 2013. “I got involved because I was quite disturbed to see people sleeping on floors. “I come from India and I know what poverty is. “We lived in a First World country. We don’t think things like this would happen here.” At its height, Sri hardly took a day off.She has been a nurse and source of counsel for the mentally stressed and a saviour for the hungry. She said many asylum seekers were ashamed to ask

thing we can.” For 45 days, she cooked for a hospitalised woman who had exotic dietary needs because there was no-one else. “It has been emotionally draining. It’s personally taken a lot of toll on me - just moving from one thing to the other.” A new wave of volunteers has helped lighten Sri’s workload - people with business backgrounds who can help on the social enterprise project. The employment program is about training up asylum seekers, identifying their skills and then employing them in social enterprises - which double as potential income for the group. The services include garden maintenance, food catering, furniture removal, repairs - using the tools and skills already within the group. Sri says the group is proof of a community spirit at odds with the government’s punative approach to asylum seekers. Recently the group successfully crowdfunded to buy a $30,000 replacement truck. “I’ve come across such generosity from people offering time and donations. “I have never come across a person who said refugees aren’t welcome.” To help Friends of Refugees, go to friendsofrefugees.org.au

Words loud as actions By JARROD POTTER THE final siren had sounded on Dandenong Stingrays’ season. Post-match talks had ended, final warm-downs and stretches had just begun in earnest as the players prepared for one last 2015 dip in the dreaded icebaths. For some of the 22-selected Stingrays, they took off their jumpers, placed them on a neat folded pile on the floor in the Princes Park change room and bid farewell to the TAC Cup. One of the last to take off his jumper, the one he’s worn for 32 TAC Cup matches in two seasons, was fittingly the man who led the side onto the field week-in, week-out - Dandenong Stingrays captain Lachlan Williams. The 18-year-old from Somerville had been the most vocal throughout the day and across the year in whole. His was the last man the Stingrays heard before they went down the race onto the famous Carlton oval on Saturday as he pumped up his side before the first bounce. Once again Williams did that at half-time when the team needed a rev-up before returning to the field. Williams finished what will likely be his last TAC Cup clash with 20 possessions and a number of forward-entries - playing his role throughout the forward half - as the Stingrays tried but couldn’t mount a comeback. In one of his final tasks as the captain, Williams was one of the loudest Stingrays telling his mates to keep their heads high after the season-ending 28-point TAC Cup preliminary final loss to Eastern Ranges. That was customary throughout Williams’s time at the head of the leadership group in 2015 - as round after round he’d lead vocally as much as by action - he’d be heard clearly in the locker rooms, in the huddle and on-the-field in the middle of the

action. Williams knows it’s a thrill just to become a TAC Cup player but to become the side’s leader has been his proudest football accolade. “It’s been a big honour they’re a really good bunch of blokes and I’m pretty speechless at the moment,” Williams said after the match on Saturday. “It’s pretty heart-breaking at the moment but every bloke I can see in this room today I’ve made a better relationship with them. “We’re all from different areas with the three different leagues - and I couldn’t think of a better bunch of blokes to play footy with and win or lose, I hold close to my heart how much I love these guys and it’s something I’ll never forget.” It’s been a challenging year for the midfielder/forward who was rushed to hospital partway through the season with an inflamed appendix requiring emergency surgery. But in a strange way the surgery helped him out tremendously - giving him time out of the game through June and July to dig deeper on the training track and eventually thrive in his final seven clashes. “It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster year for myself - the appendix was all new to me, but I learned a lot off it and I couldn’t thank the staff enough - especially Octo, he tried to get me on the park as much as possible and get my fitness up and the result has been amazing,” Williams said. “I’ve played some better footy coming back from it, feel a lot fitter and it’s probably a blessing in disguise the way it happened.” Season’s end holds a different feel for Williams and his TAC Cup brethren. There isn’t next year for this group to bounce back; the topage players graduate the program to pursue senior ambitions while a new group of 16 and 17-year-olds will try to continue

One last forward entry for the Dandenong skipper Lachlan Williams in his final TAC Cup Picture: JARROD POTTER match. 144584 the traditions the alumni hold dear. To the AFL the best will go, others onwards to the VFL and local leagues but the skipper knows that the red, black and yellow will always course through his veins and every other player who was lucky enough to become a Dandenong Stingray. “Once you’re a Stingray player, you’re a Stingray for life,” Williams said.

“It just shows from the past, the amount of players that have gone onto the AFL and VFL, how much they look back at their time wearing the Stingray jersey. “No doubt we’re going to have some players go on to the top level and some going in other ways to VFL or local but we’ll back on this and think about the journey we had together - it started back in November as Blacky (coach Craig

Black) said and I just couldn’t be more thankful to play with these type of guys as they’re a ripper bunch of blokes.” Williams’s next footballing task will technically be as an individual - running around Etihad Stadium at the Victorian State Combine testing day later this year - but it’s clear he’ll still be a leader, as he cheers for his team-mates in pursuit of their AFL dreams.

Heard helps Cougars to success THE Keysborough Cougars ended a highly successful BIG V season with one last accolade. Champion import Malcolm Heard added another trophy to his cabinet with the Wilmington College alumnus earning a place in the Division 2 Men’s All Star Five. Sharing the court with grand final rival Manny Hendrix, Craigieburn’s Jonathan Maybank, Patrick Manifold (Oakleigh) and Darren Galloway (Pakenham), Heard gave the Cougars’ men’s program one last taste of success in 2015. While he didn’t pick up the MVP - edged out by Western Port rival Manny Hendrix - Heard had plenty to celebrate from his inaugural Australian basketball season as he helped the Cougars claim the Division 2 Men’s championship. Billie Lucas - Keysborough women’s dominant guard - finished the season as the Division 2 Women’s leading scorer and earned her own place in the All Star Five. Dandenong’s Youth Championship sides also featured prominently in the awards with Jordan Jacotine and Bree Whatman inducted to the YCM and YCW All Star Five sides respectively. Also impressing from Dandenong was SEABL and YCM forward/centre prospect Mason Peatling as the 18-year-old from Berwick received the YCM Rookie of the Year award. Former Dandenong junior and WNBL player Carley Mijovic was named to the All-Star Five - for the BIG V State Championship Women’s division - as was former Dandenong SEABL player Brent Hobba (Division 1 Men).

Knee problems didn’t stop champ Galileos from rocking the joint EVEN with the rigours of an expanded repertoire and recovering from dual knee injuries did not stop Nick Galileos from taking his spot atop the swimming podium. Galileos, 16, from Dandenong, swam strongly at the opening meet of the summer swimming season - the Swimming Victoria Short Course Age Championships - with a new found passion. The Casey TigerSharks dynamo - who has starred in short and middle distance racing throughout his time at the state level - amazed the field with a scintillating 16.04.68 minutes 1500m for

the under 15-18 race. His efforts were strong enough to earn him the gold - showing the TigerSharks’ newly acquired might in the distance events. “I started my state championships with the 1500m freestyle - coming back from injury it was a bit of an unknown how I was going to go, but to win that was pretty good,” Galileos said. “I suppose I did the 1500m through training really - I was going alright at training with all the distance works so I thought I might give it a crack.” But it could have been completely different season for the Dandy dynamo - who

had been derailed by knee problems on each leg. “Was just my knee - knee injuries, had one late last year then one earlier this year on different knees,” Galileos said. “One was for three weeks and the other was about two, so I was out of the water for about five weeks.” Galileos didn’t let the knees slow his podium progress at the age championships, though, as he also picked up third in the 200m and 400m freestyle events as well as the 200m under-16 boys butterfly. “Four hundred free bronze in the 18 and unders - then also bronze in the 200m free and 200m but-

terfly,” Galileos said. “Four out of four podiums from all my swims so that was really good, too.” He backed up his 1500m gold medal swim in the age championships with second at the open short course championships in the 1518 men’s event, third in the 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle. The summer swimming season has already been hectic for Galileos as he the former National age champion was one of the TigerSharks added to Swimming Victoria’s Performance Squad, which went into camp in July for the Victorian Development Program.

Trainer makes final break By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG Stingrays have lost a link to their origins with long-time trainer Brian Hunt choosing to end his time in the TAC Cup. After nearly a quarter of a century spent on the Stingrays’ sidelines Hunt, 76, decided it was time to pack away the water bottles and trainer’s kit and let someone else take up his customary spot in the forward pocket. He made it clear that this finals campaign would be his last and his final season came to an end on Saturday as Dandenong was defeated in a preliminary final by the Eastern Ranges. Since the inaugural 1992 TAC Cup season, Hunt has been a perennial part of the trainers’ set up, with his club affiliation pre-dating the Stingrays in many respects as he joined in 1991 when the club formed. He came across from the old AFL/VFL Under-19s system when it was reformatted into the TAC Cup and has been a Shepley Oval fixture ever since. While he won’t miss the cold training nights or freezing

weekend mornings manning the boundary, the softly-spoken Hunt - who would have much preferred to recede into retirement quietly and without any fuss - said it was exciting to be part of the Stingrays and he had loved every moment as part of the Dandenong community. “It’s been good while I’ve been there - had a lot of good talent managers and made some great friends there that I’ve had for a long time,” Hunt said. Dandenong region manager Mark Wheeler made sure Hunt wouldn’t exit without just celebration and applause from the Stingrays’ parents and players after the preliminary final loss. Wheeler said Hunt’s involvement with the team was incredible and he was one of those invaluable contributors that had helped form the culture at Dandenong.“He’s been amazing from day dot with the Hawthorn-St Kilda merger of the 19s, he came with it and he’s been here ever since,” Wheeler said. “To have someone like that for 24 years you just can’t replace that, so we’re massively proud of him.”

Gun Hulett puts his exhibition skills on show

Liam Hulett relished his opportunity in the Young Guns Game on Sunday. 144602

IT WASN’T the match he would have loved to play in over the weekend, but there were plenty of positives to take away from a Young Guns Game appearance for Dandenong Stingrays utility Liam Hulett. Instead of featuring in Dandenong’s preliminary final against Eastern on Saturday - where he was just too raw to return to the line-up in the do-or-die clash- the exhibition match was a welcome distraction for Hulett and his difficult season so far. Hulett has been mired with injury throughout 2015 as his ankle caused havoc with his top-age TAC Cup campaign and restricted him to just two Stingrays matches this year. “Obviously this year hasn’t really gone to plan for me with the injury that’s put me out for most of the season but it’s good

to be playing footy again,” Hulett said. “I did the ligaments in my ankle pretty badly, but I’m all past that now and onwards and upwards from here.” The 193cm utility who played mostly with Bonbeach instead of the Stingrays this season - was given the call-up to the Young Guns Game to give recruiters one last chance to watch him on-field this year before the looming AFL National and Rookie Drafts. Hulett featured predominantly in an unusual position for the ruck/forward ... playing mostly at centrehalf-back but he took his unique challenge in his stride and made it his own. He held strong on the Black Team forwards and streamed out of defence, booting it long to set up his one-day-only midfield and forward team mates.

Hulett’s Green Team ran away with the match from the second quarter onwards to build a 62-point lead over the Black Team by the final siren. “I suppose it’s a pretty good honour and it’s good to get another game of footy under my belt,” Hulett said. “It was good out there; I was expecting to play up forward but was switched down back for most of the game, so it was good to have a run down at centrehalf-back and all that.” Next up for Hulett is the AFL State Combine on 11 October at Etihad Stadium. “Hopefully test really well, put my best foot forward and there’s nothing much else I can do from there,” Hulett said. “Just want to test well and the rest will look after itself.” - JARROD POTTER

THE Hyundai Genesis: it’s hard to know where to start. Hyundai’s flagship delivers eye-watering high levels of automotive technology and refinement at astonishingly low prices. The first-generation lefthand-drive only BH Genesis set the standard with rave reviews and major awards, including the 2009 North American Car of the Year, now the all-new second-generation DH model eclipses this in many ways. The basic Genesis is bursting at the seams with innovative high-tech kit, some of which is an expensive addition in European rivals, and others not at all, yet it comes to Australia market for a mere $60,000. This can be topped up with more features from two packs, Sensory and Ultimate, for $71,000 and $82,000 respectively. Hyundai took the middle ground with our road test vehicle, the Genesis Sensory Pack. Genesis has a one-piece hexagonal grille, HID headlights, LED indicators and daytime running lights, a sweeping line along its flanks, aerodynamic boot

The new Genesis has Hyundai punching above its weight in the luxury sedan division. lid, and ‘jewelled’ LED taillights. The wheelbase of 3010mm is not only longer than that of a BMW 5 Series but also 1mm longer than the wheelbase of a Holden Caprice and translates to a generous amount of space for occupants. It’s a premium look all round with widespread use of soft-touch materials, timber-style trim surrounds and real aluminium detail, while double-stitched, perforated leather-appointed front seats offer 12-way adjustment for the driver. The test vehicle’s Sensory Pack has an extendable seat-cushion for under-thigh

support, bolster adjustment and four-way lumbar-support adjustability. Attention to detail is characterised by a new dash top designed to decrease reflections in the windscreen. The stylish centre console features a square clock that’s synchronised via satellite. An impressive 9.2-inch wide-view touchscreen is centrally located on the dash. It gives offers access to satellite navigation incorporating Here maps, Suna live traffic updates, and a comprehensive Point of Interest database. Also included is Here

MapCare where up to three years free mapping updates are provided when the vehicle is serviced at a participating Hyundai dealer. The touchscreen also acts as a display for the Genesis around-view monitor, providing a 360-degree bird’seye view of the vehicle. In amazing attention to detail, the Grammy Lexicon sound system utilises 17 speakers uses an algorithm program to the car’s interior contours and trim materials. Genesis sedans are powered by Hyundai’s 3.8-litre V6 engine, driving the rear wheels through an in-house eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Lambda II uses Gasoline Direct Injection, triangular-pattern fuel injectors, Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, three-stage variable induction, all-aluminium block and heads, steel timing chain and iridium-tipped spark plugs. Hyundai Genesis was awarded the highest ever ANCAP score achieved in local crash testing. Passive safety equipment includes nine airbags, pretensioner seatbelts and antiwhiplash head restraints. Active safety features are smart cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot detection, lane change assist, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert and smart high beam. There has been great attention given to in-cabin noise, vibration and harshness suppression with extensive use of sound-deadening measures. The 3.8-litre high-tech V6 engine has impressive performance off the mark (zero-to-100 km/h acceleration is a claimed 6.5 seconds). Combined fuel consumption is listed as 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

Last Aussie Holden tweak By EWAN KENNEDY THERE are sure to be tears when the final Australian-made Holdens roll down the production line in 2017 but there were certainly no signs of any at the weekend when Holden announced details of the final major changes to the Commodore. Reflecting on the past and looking to the future, Holden set up a huge Commodore Gallery at its Port Melbourne HQ to announce its future plans to the media. Examples of all 37 years of Commodore to date were on display, not just cars you see on the streets, there were also concept cars and models that were exported, particularly to the USA. Then it was time for us to move onto the reveal of the very last Commodore model, a facelift of the VF named, without a great deal of imagination, the VFII. Though it will be offered in a variety of day-to-day sedans and wagons, the big emphasis for the latest Commodore is on a heavily revised version of the much loved LS3 6.2-litre V8. Possibly the last V8 engine ever to be offered in a Commodore as it’s likely its imported replacements will be four-cylinder turbo-petrols, and naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol V6s. The latest LS3 will give subfive-second time to 100 km/h,

Final Holden Commodore revealed; big push on stunning LS3 V8 engine.

the first time a Commodore has squeezed into the four-second bracket. This requires 304 kW of power and a very useful 570 Nm of torque so it will be a stunner on the road. In true marketing fashion, Holden is holding back on details of the LS3 at this stage, teasing us by only talking about the sounds it produces. Holden tells us its engineers have developed a bi-modal exhaust system with what’s called a Baillie Tip, a mechanical sound enhancer. This aural package will be

installed in the sports variants, the SS, SSV and SSV Redline. We will have to wait until we drive the VFII at its launch in Adelaide in the first week of October for our ears to experience what the guys and gals in GM-Holden’s exhaust department have given us. A mild facelift and tail tuck is part of the VFII package. The emphasis on the LS3 sees it getting functional bonnet vents and fascia duct. These are certainly not just for show, being developed by Holden engineers with support from Melbourne’s Monash Uni-

versity wind tunnel. The heavily revised V8 is backed up by upgraded FE3 rear sports suspension said to increase ride comfort while retaining sharp handling. The top-of-the-line SSV Redline gets Brembo brakes front and rear which sounds like the makings of a weekend track-day machine to us. Harking back to a once glorious Commodore past, Holden’s chairman and managing director Mark Bernhard described the Commodore VFII as the culmination of nearly four decades of design, engineering

and manufacturing expertise. “We made a commitment to keep this iconic car exciting and relevant for Australian motorists and that is exactly what we have done. This is the vehicle that our Commodore customers have been asking for,” Mr Bernhard said. “Commodore VFII is powerful and refined, it will evoke emotion in its driver and exhibits all of the hallmarks Commodore has become renowned for over the years. “Holden’s design, engineering and manufacturing teams

have produced the best Commodore ever - a vehicle that truly lives up to its reputation and one that the entire company is incredibly proud of. “This is the reason Holden is committed to ensuring we will continue to have engineering and design input into Commodore, and every other Holden vehicle in our range, for generations to come.” Immediately following the full Adelaide-based media launch we will provide details of the full Commodore VFII range, with initial driving impressions.
