Prizes galore at Cup carnival A CRANBOURNE classic ‘your cup’ is back in town this October. Days of action-packed racing, entertainment for the whole family, giveaways and fashions on the field are all planned for the upcoming TAB Cranbourne Cup Carnival. Gearing up to host one of the biggest sporting and social events on the Casey calendar, the Cranbourne Turf Club is encouraging the whole community to join in. Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said the TAB Cranbourne Cup Carnival was shaping up to be one of their biggest and best carnivals yet. “Cup day really does offer something for everyone from racing fanatics to those who just want a fun day out, with plenty of action on and off the track to keep patrons young and old entertained,” Mr Bainbridge said. Cranbourne’s cup carnival will kick off with night racing for the Pinker Pinker Plate on Friday 9 October, before Cup Day on Sunday 11 October. Boasting a 10-race program headlined by the feature $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup and the $100,000 Procon Developments Apache Cat Classic, the day also brings out some style with fashions on the field. This year the Cranbourne fashions on the field present

$5000 worth of prizes across three categories and for the first time the Turf Club has teamed up with Cranbourne Hyundai to giveaway a $31,500 Hyundai Tuscon Active on Cup day.

Mr Bainbridge said the carnival had cemented itself as one of the great country events during the Spring Racing Carnival. “From a racing perspective, we’ve got a much larger prize

purse than ever before for the TAB Cranbourne Cup and a $1 million bonus on offer for potential Cox Plate contenders, so the feature race is sure to attract a top class field.

“This is your cup and your celebration, and if you haven’t already, I encourage you to book your tickets now to join in the action of the TAB Cranbourne Cup,” he said.

$1 million Cox Plate is the lure

Keys eyes home Cup glory IN more than 25 years, no trainer has won the 2025 metre, TAB Cranbourne Cup, three times and it’s an achievement Ken Keys would love to pull off. This year the Cranbourne trainer will be represented by his talented stayer ‘Bring Something’ in the listed $300,000 feature race on Cup day next Sunday 11 October. Mr Keys has won the race on two occasions in the past in 2011 with ‘Boom N Zoom’ and in 2006 with ‘Blue Collar Jack.’ The last trainer to win the Cranbourne Cup three times was legendary racehorse trainer George Hanlon, in 1989, 1983 and 1980. Bring Something kicked off his spring campaign at Caulfield on Saturday 26 September in The Cup Club Handicap (1700 metres), in which he finished 11th, six lengths behind winner ‘Kenjorwood.’ Mr Keys said he was happy with the Sebring gelding’s effort and looked forward to continuing his campaign through the spring. “It was a good effort on the weekend. “He only beat a few horses home, but it was over 1700 metres, which doesn’t suit him, he was first up and he was doing his best work late. “It was as good as we could have hoped for,” he said, adding that his dream was to win three TAB Cranbourne Cups in the coming years. “Bring Something is not a great chance this year; I think he’ll be better suited to Bendigo or Geelong Cup over more distance,” Mr Keys explained. “But the dream is to win three, whether that’s this year or something we’ll keep trying to do. “He’s never done this path though;

THE Cranbourne Turf Club has dangled a $1 million carrot in front of Cox Plate aspirants in the hope of luring some of the country’s best horses to contest on Sunday 11 October. The club, in partnership with Tabcorp, announced the $1 million bonus to the connections of a horse that can win both the listed $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup at 2025 metres and the Group 1 $3 million William Hill Cox Plate at 2040 metres. Australia’s premier weight-for-age championship, Cox Plate, will take place two weeks after the TAB Cranbourne Cup on Saturday 24 October at Moonee Valley. Winning connections of the Cox Plate collect $1.8 million in prize money and Cranbourne Cup victors will take home $180,000- bringing potential earnings to more than $3 million including trophies. Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said the club hoped this bonus would

he said. The field for next weekend’s TAB Cranbourne Cup will be released on Thursday 8 October.

lure a top quality field to Cranbourne this year. “Possible Cox Plate contenders now have a million more reasons to make a stop at Cranbourne on their path towards one of the major races of the Spring Racing Carnival. “Being two weeks out from the Cox Plate, the Cranbourne Cup lends itself as a possible lead in race,” Mr Bainbridge said. Trainer of cult hero The Cleaner, Mick Burles, said he was already considering entering his last start Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner to the Cranbourne Cup. “The Cleaner will head towards the TAB Cranbourne Cup if we think he needs another run after the (Group 1) Underwood Stakes this weekend. “The $1 million bonus is a great incentive and definitely puts Cranbourne on our radar as a race to potentially include in his campaign,” Mr Burles said.

Car giveaway on Cup day ONE lucky racegoer will drive away in a brand new car at this year’s TAB Cranbourne Cup. Cranbourne Turf Club has teamed up with Cranbourne Hyundai to give away a $31,500 Hyundai Tucson Active on Sunday 11 October. On the day, up to 16 lucky racegoers will be drawn out and allocated a horse running in the $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup; the finalist with the winning gee-gee will also take home the car. Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said this was another exciting addition to Cup day. “All you have to do is be on course here at Cranbourne on Cup day to go in the running. “Not only will we have connections and punters madly cheering on their Cup runners, but the lucky finalists and their friends will be spurring on their horse in the hope of winning a brand new car,” he said. Fashion flair on parade for the Cup SHOW off your fashion flair at the TAB Cranbourne Cup. Calling all fashionistas - it’s time to put your spring racing ensemble together and get ready to strut your stuff in this year’s Cranbourne Fashions on the Field. It’s one of the highlights of the TAB Cranbourne Cup held on Sunday 11 October, and this year the competition will be sure to heat with $5000 worth of prizes up for grabs across two categories. Lady of the Day and Young Lady of the Day will be crowned along with Best Millinery prize which is chosen from contestants across both categories. Fashionable fillies will be competing for a broad range of prizes from major sponsors including Review, Ella Bache Cranbourne, Brazilian Butterfly, De Bortoli Wines and Felicity Northeast Millinery. Casting their eyes over the line-up this year will be former Myer Fashions on the Field ambassador, and daughter of Black Caviar co-owner Pam Hawkes, one of the faces of Flemington’s Playground of Racing Royalty campaign, Alison Saville sitting alongside 2014 Face of Mornington Racing Club, model and milliner Caitrin O’Rourke and trainer and assistant trainer at Ken Keys Racing, Kasey Keys. Ms Saville said she was looking forward to seeing the wonderful spring racing

fashion on display at the TAB Cranbourne Cup. “As I judge I look for the total package; an outfit that shows someone’s own personal style, is ladylike and is on trend with the latest cuts and colours. “The outfit should really complement the person and be appropriate for the day and the weather,” Ms Saville explained, adding that co-ordinating colours is also important for the overall look. “It’s all about the finer details as well, ensuring your headwear, handbag and shoes co-ordinate with your outfit and don’t forget personal grooming, ensuring your make-up and hair is nicely done,” she said. Along with an experienced line-up of judges, Marlee Horobin, from Peter Horobin Saddlery and Marlee May handbags will MC the event. Ladies can register at the Fashions on the Field enclosure on the day between 11.30am and 12.15pm or pre-register at www.cranbourneturfclub.com.au. Heats for Young Lady of the Day will kick off about 12.30pm, with the final to follow directly after. Lady of the Day heats will start at around 1pm. To find out more, call the Cranbourne Turf Club on 5996 1300.

Last year s Cranbourne Fashions on the Field was hotly contested with competitors, Tea Blagojevic, Roslyn Czermak, Jenny Beard and Ashleigh Barrie coming out on top.

AN AHMADIYYA Muslim from Cranbourne, allegedly assaulted while attending his mosque, has invited his alleged attackers to have lunch with him and others in an extraordinary show of faith. Abdul Razzaq, 65, suffered a broken nose and was taken to hospital after this month’s alleged altercation in which three youths are believed to have forced their way into the Baitul-Salam Mosque in Langwarrin and started a fight. It’s alleged the teenagers also yelled abuse at Mr Razzaq and other mosquegoers when they entered the Leisureland Drive temple about 9pm on 4 September. It is the latest in a series of offences against the Langwarrin mosque, the group’s Victorian headquarters, in the last few years. Mr Razzaq said the Ahmadiyya community had decided not to pursue charges against the alleged attackers and would instead invite them to a barbecue lunch at the mosque where “they can get to know us more”. Detective Senior Sergeant Miro Majstorovic, from Frankston Police CIU, confirmed that representatives at the mosque had reached out to a community member in relation to the incident, but would not confirm who. The police investigation is ongoing. Mr Rassaq said the mosque had extended the invitation because they felt many outsiders didn’t understand their Islamic beliefs and wanted to raise people’s awareness. “We want to show everyone what Islam really is and what defines a Muslim,” he said. “We want to be a good, productive part of the community and give back to this beautiful country which has given us so much.”

30-month animal ban By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A “CHAOTIC” animal rescuer has been largely banned from keeping animals for two and a half years after unhealthy chickens and carcasses were found at her Cranbourne East property. Wendy Mankelow’s rented “farm area” contained up to 300 chickens and duck, many in “ill health”, “lethargic” and “lacking feathers” during a Casey Council inspection in late 2013, a court was told on Monday. The inspection uncovered four unregistered cats, 12 dogs, guinea pigs, five sheep, nine goats and an alpaca, according to a Casey prosecutor. A chicken, which had a facial affliction and pus running from its eyes, needed immediate treatment, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. Poultry were found in cages without

drinking water, stale feed and dwelling within three metres of Mankelow’s home. The next day, one of the unregistered dogs was impounded after being found roaming on Ballarto Road. In January 2014, a follow-up inspection by Casey and RSPCA officers found 15 dogs, four cats and “multiple” chicken carcasses - including a decomposing body in an animal trap. Mankelow pleaded guilty to failing to treat an animal’s injury, pain and suffering, multiple charges of keeping unregistered animals, exceeding animal permit numbers and having an unregistered dog at large. Defence lawyer David Risstrom told the court Mankelow - who had moved to Gippsland - was someone who “rescues animals, saves animals but keeps them chaotically”.

The accused - a disability pensioner with bipolar depression - was pitching in $40 a week to care for the animals, Mr Risstrom said. As part of her role, she had received a “collection” of unregistered cats and dogs. Mr Risstrom said the law favoured “indifference”, declaring those who “turned a blind eye” as legally safe. “In my experience, the overwhelming response is of no interest. Animals just die because no-one raises a finger for them. “It’s the people who do raise a finger and don’t do it properly who carry the risk.” The lawyer said the RSPCA made a statement declaring there were no welfare concerns. “There’s been widespread infection of poultry throughout Victoria, so

this isn’t a unique issue,” Mr Risstrom said. “(Mankelow) does the job of a refuge but doesn’t do it (well) enough. “She certainly helps a lot of animals, some she doesn’t help well enough.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Mankelow could face jail given the serious charges and her similar prior convictions over the past 20 years. “For her not to have anything to do with animals would not be a bad thing.” He convicted and fined Mankelow $5000. The accused and Casey Council agreed she would not keep animals for 30 months except for a cat and a dog both desexed and registered. The council declined to enforce court costs on Mankelow.

Fluffy family’s quack attack in Cranbourne ONE mother duck has created a home away from home in Russell Street, Cranbourne. For the second consecutive year this mother duck has set up camp to hatch her brood of ducklings in an old pencil pine tree in Val and Jim Bourke’s backyard. Hatching 13 fluff balls in 2014, this year she left with 14 trailing behind her after one died. A Cranbourne resident of 33 years, Mr Bourke said the new tradition is a first in the street. “When we had the wood fire a certain amount of heat would come through the chimney and ducks would sit on the roof to keep warm, but we’ve never had them in the yard hatching before,” he said. The brood of cuteness hatched in their nest in the tall pencil pine tree before making a crash landing on to the grass. “We gave them water and

the mother some bread - they were a fantastic sight and off they would go eating grass and following their mum around,” Mr Bourke said. Running amuck in the Bourke’s backyard for three days, the happy family was off down the street on Saturday 26 September where they may have taken a quick dip in a neighbour’s swimming pool. “The ducklings got out through a hole in the fence and Mum leads the way! the mother flew over. The happy little “I suspect they will go to a brood from nearby housing estate which Cranbourne. has a lake,” Mr Bourke said. The Bourke family has become quite accustomed to the new brood and this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. Lorikeets nested and gave birth in the same tree for three years before the family of ducks took over. “We expect mother duck back next year,” Mr Bourke laughed.

Horses are branded By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE’S three racing codes are now creatively represented at the entrance to the Turf Club, in a $200,000 joint project with the City of Casey. Just in time to represent Cranbourne in a new light at the upcoming spring racing carnival, the series of flagpoles and directional signage was unveiled on Thursday 24 September. Cranbourne Turf Club Chief Executive Officer, Neil Bainbridge said the rusted steel, stainless steel and timber signs made a great addition and first impression to the racing centre. “They certainly create a great sense of arrival and make a real statement - it's one that’s been planned for a couple of years,” Mr Bainbridge said. The various signs direct patrons to the club's key racing facilities and

Mayor Cr Mick Morland said the set of signs now linked with the branding developed by the council for the Cranbourne town centre. “The signage assists with improved navigation to, from and within the precinct, for all users and visitors of the racecourse, which is fast becoming the heart of Cranbourne’s social life,” Cr Morland explained. Mr Bainbridge said the interchangeable flags meant the entry would always look fresh and up to date. “Most importantly the landscaping and beautification works portray racing in Cranbourne at the highest level and I think the signage does justice to the size of the racing industry in Cranbourne. “It’s another project ticked off in what’s been a big year for Cranbourne racing,” Mr Bainbridge said.

Cup takes the pride of place By GEORGIA WESTGARTH AMONG racing royalty, fashion trotted down the red carpet with Melbourne’s most sought-after trophy taking pride of place at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre on Thursday 24 September. Visiting Cranbourne as part of its international tour before the first Tuesday in November, the $175,000 Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy was passed around by locals. Posing for photos with a white glove, the 18-carat gold cup kept its sheen under the watchful eye of Racing Victoria representatives. A Melbourne institution since 1861, the Cup was discussed in front

of a buzzing crowd by three legends of the sport. Horse trainer and former jockey, Pat Hyland, race caller, John Russell and jockey Bob Skelton amused crowds with their Cup victories and race day insights. Winner of the 1976 Melbourne Cup atop ‘Van Der Hum’, Mr Skelton said it was a race every jockey aspired to win, something Mr Russell only aspired to commentate. Having called 20 horses to Melbourne Cup victory Mr Russell said the most exciting and memorable was his first. “Bart Cummings won that race and I can remember the butterflies I felt leading up to calling it - but it’s

always a big thrill - it’s an experience, I encourage everyone to go to the Melbourne Cup at least once,” Mr Russell said. Riding ‘What A Nuisance’ to Cup glory in 1985, Pat Hyland, showed off his slightly smaller Melbourne Cup trophy to the crowd. “It’s not very often it comes out of the house,” Mr Hyland laughed. Amid the memories came the clothes, with black and white saturating the runway. Ladies showed off flesh in strappy black stilettos and modest off the shoulder and boatneck dresses, with wide-brimmed hats the pick of the bunch.

Three netted in road rage incident POLICE have arrested three men at a Narre Warren house after a harrowing road rage incident the previous day in which it’s alleged a weapon was brandished at the victim. The victim was travelling along James Cook Drive in Endeavour Hills when they were cut off by a maroon Holden Commodore at the Hallam North Road intersection, just after 5pm on Thursday 24 September. Police allege the occupants of the Commodore then became aggressive towards the victim, with one of them allegedly pulling out a weapon and pointing it at the victim’s car. The next day detectives from Cardinia CIU executed a search warrant at a Shiraz Crescent home in Narre Warren and arrested three men. One was remanded in custody while the other two were released pending inquiries. A police spokesperson said numberplate recognition was involved when carrying out the arrests. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

The aftermath of an accident at the Robinsons Road and Westernport Highway intersection in 2014. “There were more VicRoads members at the consultation meeting than locals, which was very disappointing, and now some residents don’t like what’s been done,” she said. After noticing Highway Patrol cars policing the intersection three times since the upgrade, Ms Farmer said she had witnessed drivers blatantly disobey the road rules countless times. “I toot my horn at them maybe putting a camera at the intersection might help, but again it’s more money in the interim,” she said. The mother of three said she doesn’t want to see any more preventable accidents and believes the temporary measures will stop crashes similar to Olivia’s. “The way the kerbing is now, stops a driver going straight through the intersection

because they would hit the kerb, however it doesn’t wind around far enough to stop drivers who deliberately want to break the new road rules,” she explained. Concerned about the bus route even prior to the June crash, Ms Farmer said she now felt more confident about allowing her children on the school bus. “The buses are turning left and heading down to the Baxter-Tooradin Road roundabout before getting back onto the highway which is really good, adding on about two minutes to their trip,” she said. Warning signs are also set to be installed at the nearby Victoria Road intersection on Westernport Highway to prohibit motorists driving straight through or turning right. Road rule breakers can expect a minimum fine of $190 if caught.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S been three weeks since the deadly Robinsons Road and Westernport Highway intersection was made temporarily safe - but law breakers have left some locals feeling disappointed. After community consultations with VicRoads, turning right and driving straight from Robinsons Road where it crosses the Westernport Highway has been banned. Pearcedale resident Bec Farmer lives near the notorious intersection that took the life of 19-year-old Olivia SteadmanMeconi in June this year. Ms Farmer believes the changes will at least protect drivers who are unfamiliar with the intersection. “Motorists can’t accidentally drive through or turn right with all the big bright signage, I believe what’s been done will diminish the chances of an accident up to a point. “But it won’t stop the law breakers who are mostly locals who have been driving across it for 30 years,” Ms Farmer explained. With a roundabout two years away, Ms Farmer said VicRoads had done an “outstanding” job so far. “VicRoads has done everything right in my opinion.

Referring to the letter by John Glazebrook (Council Should Look Forward, News, 24 September). We find it very disgusting that the mayor has informed residents and ratepayers of the intention to reappoint the CEO Mike Tyler. This is a serious issues and the mayor just cannot inform the community he has to get the permission of the community to pass this resolution. Yes, it is very essential that such a highly paid position in the council must be open to other candidates for this position of CEO and a two year tenure of service is sufficient and reasonable. All ratepayers must have a say in this matter as we are the ones who are paying their fat salaries. It is a great shame for the whole local community of 288,000 people. Every resident and ratepayer must raise their voices and be heard, we cannot sit back and be dictated to, we must get the City of Casey Council to do our bidding and not their own. Remember that councils are elected by the people for the people. So, dear ratepayers, please wake up to the call to band together and challenge the council. To quote Abraham Lincoln: “You can fool some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all the people all of the time.” Dunstan Girton, Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association.

WHAT a great letter by Eliezer Francois of Endeavour Hills (Refugee Reaction, News, 24 September). I totally agree with this lady’s comments on the Refugee Invasion of Europe. It was only “yesterday” that we in Australia were told to be “alert” not “alarmed” and to report anything or anybody or anything that was not quite right. Particularly in this past year, even the very young (some only 15 years old) have come under the radar of the authorities because of suspicious behaviour. Are they IS, they wonder. Why is it then that tens of thousands and thousands and more thousands are pouring into Europe. I am sure these same rules apply over there as to be alert but not alarmed. These “refugees” have very different religions, different cultures and different values, why are they travelling to Christian Europe, what the hell is going on here, why is all this happening? Why are Angela Merkel of Germany and Francois Hollande of France encouraging them? Hungary seems to be the only country that has not got its head in the sand. Dutch MP Geert Wilders is also saying “for God’s sakes EU, wake up, wake up, wake up!” (I saw him speak in Parliament) but is anyone listening. This has got to be the biggest Trojan Horse of all times. Yes Elizer, I agree with you. Here in Australia, let us not be swayed by all the bleeding hearts but let us think hard with our heads and not our hearts or else we will suffer some very serious consequences. Beatrice Blyth, Berwick.

I recently watched The Great Australian Spelling Bee on Channel 10. What impressed me more than the children’s spelling ability was their sportsmanship. I don’t watch The Block or My Kitchen Rules because of the way some of the contestants act towards one another. The children were under a lot of pressure. Some of them were as young as eight. Yet they were always positive and continually encouraged each other even though it was a competition. They could teach the adults a lot. Well done kids! Margaret Kotre, Cranbourne North.

New stolen generation By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS FRIGHTENED parents with disabilities are not registering their children’s births because their previous children have been taken away from them, according to a south-east based advocate. And Michelle de Hommel, who has successfully raised six children and is the head of Parents With a Disability, said recent changes to child protection laws could create a “new stolen generation”. Ms de Hommel said she knows of parents with a disability who, out of fear of losing their kids because the Child Protection Service says they can’t look after them, are avoiding registering their births or are fleeing interstate. Her group, the Law Institute of Victoria and the Office of the Public Advocate have spoken out against the change, which mandates courts to order that children who are out of home

for 12 months are put into permanent care. The natural parents then have access to their children four times a year until they turn 18. Ms de Hommel has “joined the dots” between this new focus on “permanent care” to a high-profile campaign to relax adoption laws of Australian children. The losers are parents with a disability, she said. Her group advocates for a boost in state-funded support above the current three-hoursa-week of assistance afforded by the Department of Health and Human Services. “The money is just not going to parents, who may need just a few more hours of support.” Colleen Pearce, the state’s Public Advocate, said on Tuesday 22 September that children were being removed from parents with disabilities at a much

She said the child protection law changes would be “devastating” for parents with disabilities trying to retain their children. “Disability is assumed to be a risk to children,” Ms Pearce said.

“There is no credible evidence to support this assumption.” Ms Pearce said the DHHS was prone to put “negative scrutiny” over parents with a disability rather than giving support and encouragement. “In a risk-averse system, parents with disabilities are be-

As one of Victoria’s fastestgrowing municipalities - with an average yearly increase of around 8000 people - Casey also ranks high in alcohol-related ambulance

attendances, revealed in an August Turning Point report. The study found Casey ranked in the top five alcohol-related ambulance attendances, alongside Frankston (546), Dandenong (578), Port Phillip (616) and Melbourne (1436) in 2012/13, and increased again in Casey the following year. With a spike in GHB drugrelated attendances the statistics revealed a huge drop in antidepres-

sant-related paramedic call outs, dropping 20 per cent in the period between 2012 and 2014. Crystal methamphetamine callouts dropped along with those for cannabis however heroin, ecstasy and methadone calls for help saw an increase. Cannabis conviction for Chaplin By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN EMPLOYMENT agency worker has grown more than eight kilograms of cannabis in his Cranbourne North home garage to help ends meet, a court was told on Monday. Brett Chaplin, 39, pleaded guilty to trafficking at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court over six mature plants - as well as smaller plants and leaf cuttings - seized by police in September last year. Defence lawyer David Starvaggi told the court that Chaplin was struggling to support his out-of-work partner at the time. Chaplin had no prior convictions or subsequent offences, and had cleared a drug screening four months ago, the lawyer told the court. “My instructions are he is not using (cannabis) now.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the weight of the plants could have been sufficient for a County Court trial. “If you hadn’t have been stopped, you could have gone on and on. “If you come here again on similar things, you’re looking at a jail term.” Chaplin was convicted and ordered to perform 125 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months.

Out of the closet By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A FORMER jockey who was wanted for outstanding warrants and found by police hiding in a bedroom cupboard in Kooweerup has been bailed on his “last chance”. At a bail hearing on Monday 21 September, Jamie Ronald Dentith, 42, faced charges including burglary and theft. He was accused of stealing mobile phones, cameras, handbags, a digital tablet, portable hard drive and luggage valued at $4505 in a Cranbourne West home burglary on 12 May while he was on bail and a community corrections order. Four days later, he allegedly stole from a Cranbourne North supermarket and drove a car without registration plates while he was disqualified. Dentith had said he “more than likely” exchanged the stolen goods with dealers for drugs or cash, according to a police bail summary. There were also two warrants for

Dentith’s arrest for failing to appear at court while on bail for charges including theft of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and trafficking prescribed drugs in July. A woman, whose Kooweerup home Dentith was found in on 16 September, told the court she believed he’d been drug free since residing with her, her husband and four children from 18 May. Prior to his stay, Dentith had contacted her in tears and “quite a bit of distress”, she said. “He wanted to get his life back on track. “My husband and I don’t do drugs of any sort. I felt he needed us.” By agreement, she took charge of Dentith’s access to his bank card, cleared his phone contacts and took him to a chemist for daily suboxone treatment. She told the court Dentith had been confined to the house, where each day he fed and worked 22 horses, cooked and tutored the couple’s children

while she and her husband ran a frantic home business. He had no access to vehicles, other than when driven by her or her husband. “He’s been clean four months and doing fantastic,” the witness told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. She was unaware of two court dates that Dentith had skipped in July, resulting in warrants for his arrest. Defence lawyer Helen Murphy said Dentith had a lengthy break in offending between 2000 and 2010 before receiving two suspended sentences, a good-behaviour bond and most recently two corrections orders with pre-sentence detention. “For four months he’s been abstinent from illicit drugs and his offending was tied up with drug use. “The risk of him reoffending is lower because he’s not using illicit drugs.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen remarked on how healthy Dentith looked.

“I’ve had the opportunity of seeing you off and on for the past 18 months. “There’s been occasions when your mental health has been very poor. “I have to agree this is the last chance you’ve got to manage your drug and mental health issues.” Mr Vandersteen said Dentith had re-offended on bail “more than once” and was likely to face a jail term for the May burglary and thefts. He granted bail on the strength of the Kooweerup witness’s evidence, his stable accommodation and treatment options. Dentith’s bail conditions included tri-weekly reporting to police, not to leave Victoria, reporting to the therapeutic CREDIT bail program, a night curfew and a ban on using drugs of dependence. Dentith was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 October.

THE Hampton Park mystery millionaire has claimed their prize. A woman from Narre Warren will forever remember Monday 28 September as the day that changed her life. Claiming her unregistered first division prize at Sporting Chance in Hampton Park Central, the woman said the win had come at the best possible time. “Wow, wow, wow! I just keep saying wow! The lucky lady left the shop feeling optimistic about the future. “I have a feeling this is just the beginning of good things to come,” she said. Sporting Chance, located on the corner of Somerville and Hallam Roads, sold a winning Powerball ticket

worth $10 million in December 2011 and Ms Bunting said: “We were due for our next win!” “Our customers are always asking us ‘have you ever sold first division’ and now we can tell them that we’ve made a millionaire this year,” Ms Bunting said. The $1 million entry in Lotto draw 3488 was the only one to win first division throughout Australia on Monday 21 and Wednesday 23 September. The winning numbers in

A radical failure By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

THE Islamic Council of Victoria has labelled as “counter-intuitive” the introduction of anti-radicalisation kits into schools It said the kits have already failed in the UK and USA. Greater Dandenong teacher and ICV spokesman Kuranda Seyit said the Radicalisation Awareness Kit released by the federal government on 21 September was a product of “political expediency”. A notorious example of the approach’s “failure” was a Texan boy who was recently arrested when he brought a clock-like contraption to school. “He was mistreated and victimised because he was Muslim, and teachers were trained to report anything suspicious. “It blew out to a controversy. It’s something you don’t want.”

That sort of victimisation played on young people’s minds, Mr Seyit said. “If you want to build resilience and inclusion, it’s counter-intuitive to start talking of radicalisation and linking it with Muslim students.” Mr Seyit preferred the state government’s “balanced” and “comprehensive” approach that promotes student resilience and inclusive schools. He said the Victorian approach was more likely to help youth at risk of being isolated and drifting into criminality It includes new subjects for 2016 such as respectful relationships, and world views and ethical understanding. The method is to challenge stereotypes and behaviour such as prejudice, violence, discrimination and harassment, and teach students social skills to cultivate respectful

relationships. It has been 12 months since Lyndale Secondary College graduate Numan Haider was fatally shot after stabbing police officers in Endeavour Hills. Other former Lyndale students were charged over a foiled terrorist plot targeting Dandenong’s Anzac Day service this year. Department of Education spokesman Bryan Allchin said there would be a focus on prevention - “universal support” for all students plus early intervention for those that are “vulnerable”. However he noted: “Radicalisation is not taking place in the classroom - it’s happening when vulnerable young people are targeted online or outside of the school environment.” As part of its strategy, schools will be urged to engage with community leaders, police and organisa-

tions that can support at-risk young people. The new curriculum will also be supported by programs such as School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS), the Building Resilience Framework, and the existing Bully Stoppers. The SWPBS program is a research-based method aimed at creating a positive school climate and open responsive management from school leaders, staff, students and parents. The resilience-building program will include social-emotional learning teaching material for students to explicitly learn problem solving, coping and help-seeking skills. Last month, the state government announced an $8.6 million, two-year Navigator service pilot that aimed to reconnect 12 to 17-year-olds who were disengaged from schools.

Winners at the circuit THE Brown family were having a fun day at the circuit last week when they were tapped on the shoulder and awarded one of two $50 Phillip Island RSL dinning vouchers. There is still one $50 voucher to giveaway this week, winners are randomly chosen; so you could be in the right place at the right time and win. All you have to do is walk through the visitor centre door. Take advantage of the warmer weather and strap yourself into the state-of-the-art Sodi RT8 go-karts for an exhilarating session on the 750 metre scale replica of the circuit. Push out a series of hot laps and try to set the fastest time and you could win 2 x 10 minute go-kart sessions.

The new matching tandem karts are equipped with duel controls, so the kids don’t miss out and can participate in the full interactive karting experience which they haven’t been able to do before. When visiting the circuit these school holidays, be sure to leave a review and a happy snap of your time on any of our social media pages to go in the running to win 4 x 10 minute gokart sessions. It is that simple. To be eligible to win you must like us, tag us in your post and use ?#ýphillipislandcircuit? Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is the destination for the whole family with many hours of entertainment and enjoyment on offer and over these

school holidays, so make a whole day of it starting with the state-of-the-art go-karts, then move onto the race simulators followed by the slot cars, the largest GP track in Australia. Slow things down a bit and wander through the history of motorsport, then stroll through the beautiful water gardens keeping an eye out for our beautiful peacocks roaming around. Stop and say hello to our cocky Robbo, have a chat and he will probably talk back. While speaking to Robbo, keep an eye out for kangaroos, the only ones on the island.

Make sure you don’t miss the guided circuit tour at 2pm each day where you will follow in the footsteps of racing superstars and access exclusive and restricted areas such as the control tower, media centre, pit roof, and of course that “hero” photo opportunity on the winner’s podium. Feeling hungry or thirsty? We’ve got that covered too with our Champions Bar and Café where you can choose from a range of homemade goodies, wine, beer, coffee or a full on meal. Rivercrest students are encouraged to see themselves as global citizens. In addition to acquiring knowledge, they are encouraged to recognise the contribution and responsibility they have to engender greater harmony among the people of the world. They are to be respectful, compassionate, lateral thinkers, who, although prepared to challenge prevailing ideas, will also be relective and sensitive. They will be people who are able to communicate efectively and work collaboratively with others. They will be challenged to become globally-minded citizens who epitomise Christ’s commission to love and serve others.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Winners in waiting Manufacturing

By CASEY NEILL BERWICK’S Australian Precision Technologies (APT) won a top manufacturing award just a few months ago and is already in the running for another. The family-owned and operated business took home the Small Manufacturer of the Year title at June’s Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame awards. It’s now in the running for the Manufacturer of the Year Award at the Casey Cardinia Business Awards alongside Hallam’s Wastech Engineering and fellow Berwick business Successful Endeavours. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner a Cranbourne Racing Centre on 22 October. APT was inducted into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame last year and picked up the manufacturing award at the inaugural Casey Cardinia Business Awards. “It’s recognition for all our hard work and commitment in a challenging manufacturing industry,” co-director Ron Weinzierl said. “With government and industry support we’ll be able to develop into a world-class manufacturer.” Ron’s brother Richard Weinzierl founded the company in 1992. Ron came on board in 1998 and said APT was now leading the market on national and global fronts with clients in aerospace, defence, automotive, biomedical and telecommunications. “We’re known for precision engineering - we make stuff that people can make into products,” Ron said. “Flexibility is the key for our future business.” Successful Endeavours is also up for the Business and Professional Services Business of the Year title alongside Hampton Park business Jotterbug Creative and Pakenham’s MetamorphCG. Managing director Ray Keefe started Successful Endeavours as a homebased business in 1997. “By 2005 I realised I didn’t know

how to make this thing grow,” he said. Mr Keefe went looking for a business mentor and tracked down the right one in 2008. He rebranded the business, repositioned it in the market and moved out of home into commercial premises. “Four months after that we won Casey Business of the Year,” he said. The Berwick small business has since collected several award nominations and wins. Wastech Engineering was a finalist for the Medium Manufacturer of the Year title at this year’s Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards. It won the Manufacturing Award at March’s Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards and took home the Casey Business of the Year and Casey Manufacturer of the Year awards for 2013. In May last year it won the Melbourne South East (MSE) Business Awards Business of the Year Overall Business Excellence award and Medium Enterprise category. Brothers Neil and Paul Bone started Wastech in 1993 after largely working on trucks involved in the waste business during their time as diesel motor mechanics. The business has grown from a three-man band to an industry leader with more than 90 staff and a turnover pushing $30 million. Wastech’s customers range from large national retail stores and shopping centre developments to suburban retailers and its equipment includes front lift trucks, static compactors, bin lifters and bins. “Innovation and outstanding customer service keeps us ahead of our competitors and high quality product ensures we stay there,” Neil said.

EMPLOYEES are using their disabilities to their advantage at EDMI in Dandenong. Operations manager Cameron Bower last year took on five workers through DVJS in Cranbourne to cover extra work. The three who remain are going from strength to strength. Dion from Doveton has vision problems, but Mr Bower said that heightened his sense of touch and made him perfect for a role checking crucial parts. Scott from Hampton Park has autism and works in the packing area with meticulous consistency. “It’s exactly what I want,” Mr Bower said. “Since he started packing I have not had one issue.” David from Kooweerup is deaf and works in the spray painting booth. “That’s no issue for me - all of

my employees have to wear hearing protection anyway,” Mr Bower said. EDMI repairs domestic and industrial gas meters and assembles and tests meters and regulators. “Our core business is repairing gas meters and supply of new for the domestic market,” he said. The company has been in Dandenong for 15-plus years, previously as Atlas Measurement. Mr Bower came on as operations manager in 2010, and said smart meters could see the business grow in the near future. “In the UK, we’ve won part of a tender for 20 million gas meters over about five years. That’s all government-legislated,” he said. “Unless government legislation changes here, it’s not going to be something that’s on a mass roll-out.” Mr Bower had avoided “body shops” in the past, but found DVJS consulted with workers and workplaces to find the right fit for both. “You’re not stuck with that per-

The DVJS service is free and includes government rebates, training and post-placement support. Mr Bower now works with DVJS employment executive Willie Alefaio to conduct pre-placement trials to assess workers’ skills.

“It gives us the confidence to be able to put them forward,” Mr Alefaio said. DVJS, formerly Dandenong Valley Job Support, has been helping people with disabilities to access employment since 1993. The company also has offices in Narre Warren, Pakenham and Dandenong.

PUT on some pink, sip champagne and colourin pictures - it’s all for a good cause. SEBN will hold a Girls Night In networking evening to raise money for the Cancer Council. Art therapy specialist Diane Collett will be on hand to stimulate guests’ minds through adult colouring and drawing. The repetition, pattern and detail involved are said to help participants de-stress. The event will be held from 4pm for a 4.15pm start until 6pm on Thursday 15 October at the Dandenong Civic Centre, 225 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. RSVP by Tuesday 13 October to 8571 1576 or sebn@cgd.vic.gov.au. Visit www.greaterdandenong.com for more information.

Businesses picked by voting choice of the people THE people of Casey and Cardinia have spoken. Dandy Mart Hampton Park, SJD Homes in Officer and Village Way Cafe in Pakenham are the finalists in the inaugural Casey Cardinia Business Awards People’s Choice Award. The City of Casey and Cardinia Shire Council asked the community to nominate and vote for businesses in the region that impressed or inspired them. Casey Mayor Mick Morland said the councils received a great response to the new award. “There were 52 businesses from across the region nominated for the award, with the public then asked to vote for their favourite business from the nominees on the region’s website,” he said. Cr Morland congratulated the finalists. “You’ve obviously left a lasting impression on your customers and clients,” he said. Cardinia Mayor Leticia Wilmot said the new category had been a wonderful way for the community to shine a light on the local businesses that had impressed them and provided superb customer service. The winner of the People’s Choice Award and 12 other Casey Cardinia Business Awards categories will be announced at a gala awards dinner on Thursday 22 October at Cranbourne Racing Centre.

Confident to learn in 2016 Get a head start for the New Year. Contact your local Kumon Centre to hear how we can support your child’s learning over summer and in the long term. Kumon helps tackle fundamentals in maths and English. 144834

Kumon Maths and English Programmes develop

FOR many nine-year-olds, the summer will be spent at the beach or going away on holiday. Theo will be doing all that as well as taking 20 minutes each day to ensure he goes back to school full of confidence. Theo has been studying the fundamentals of maths and English at Kumon for just over a year and can now confidently solve Year 6 fraction problems and comprehend texts like Treasure Island. “When I go back to school, I won’t have anything to worry about, Theo said.

Kumon students learn at their own pace so they can practise topics they find challenging or progress to study advanced work. “I feel like Kumon gets me somewhere because I know it will make high school easier for me. I’m three quarters of the way through Year 6 maths and I want to get up to half way through Year 8 maths by the end of the year, Theo said. Theo’s progress has impressed his teachers as well as his mum, Mary. “He’s definitely on top of things at school. His teachers

were surprised by his English because he wasn’t much of a reader, which worried me, but he’s good with that now too, Mary said. Mary said the support Kumon gave Theo had helped him muster more confidence. “You have that one-on-one positive feedback which makes Kumon a positive learning experience and that’s what Theo needed. It’s a very nurturing environment, she said. Contact your local Kumon instructor for further details.

Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Daredevils are champs By RUSSELL BENNETT SOMETIMES it’s so easy to get caught up in the politics of local sport that the things that really matter fall by the wayside - the love of the game, the community spirit and mateship. But on Sunday at Donnelly Reserve in Cranbourne, everything that’s good about the game of cricket was on display for a massive crowd. The thrill of a bowler on a hat-trick, the excitement of a batsman in search of quick boundaries, the sportsmanship of strong competition, even just the sound of willow on leather. The final of the Melbourne Champions Cricket League (MCCL) saw the Red Daredevils defeat the Eleven Spartans in a thrilling contest. The Twenty-20 competition has had 16 teams competing in it over recent months, and now an exciting new chapter is about to start - with one of its clubs, Kalgidhar Cricket Club, set to enter a side in the Sub-District division of this West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) season. MCCL secretary and treasurer Amandeep Singh said one of the league’s main aims was to extend the game of cricket into different communities of various backgrounds. “We’re promoting this for the kids as well so they can play in the future in a more professional environment,” he said. Rupinder Singh Dhanoa will be Kalgidhar’s inaugural captain in the WGCA. He said when the MCCL first started roughly a decade ago, the organisers were “just migrants with nothing on us - not even a bat - but we had a dream to play at this level, and we’ve been working on it together and we’ve finally got there”.

Brett Armitage (second from left) was joined by MCCL secretary and treasurer Amandeep Singh; president Kawalpratap Singh; MCCL vice-president and Kalgidhar Cricket Club captain Rupinder Singh Dhanoa and chief advisor and committee member MCCL and Kalgidhar vice-captain Ashish Uppal in presenting the winning trophies on MCCL grand final day. He paid tribute to WGCA president Brett Armitage for his role in helping Kalgidhar take that next step. “I took a call from Jason Mathers, our Region 8 manager,” Armitage said. “He told me this cricket league was looking for some help to get into some competitive cricket and to be affiliated with somebody under the Cricket Victoria banner. “Within two or three weeks we had them affiliated with us so they could play their winter competition. “The intention was to give them the ability to use My Cricket and have all

the insurances and incorporations they needed to be recognised as a cricket association, and it wasn’t going to affect the summer competition, so we had no hesitation in offering our services to help. They’re extremely passionate supporters and I’m glad I’m not facing some of the fast bowling I’ve seen in this competition!” Kalgidhar will be temporarily based at Lakeside in Pakenham until a more permanent home can be arranged. The club’s players stem from the local south eastern suburbs, and could look to field junior teams in the

not-too-distant future. “If there are more players and juniors, they can be put in during the course of the season,” Armitage said. “At the moment, we’ve only got five clubs in our G Grade and six in our one-day comp so there is room there. “Over the past 10 years in the WGCA, sometimes halfway through the season, we’ve been able to fill a position in a grade because there’s a team there. We left the affiliation of teams until the 18th of September because we don’t want forfeits, so we’ve left it a month later than normal to give ev-

eryone the opportunity to put in their nominations.” Armitage also hit out at some existing criticism around local circles that the WGCA wasn’t doing enough to make the future of its clubs sustainable. “We need people out there (from potential new teams or clubs) to want to take that step and the league will find them a ground, like we’ve done here,” he said. “It wasn’t a lot of work - it was just having the right people who were keen to do something. “The other thing that’s really disappointing is that we’ve had this concept of Premier, District and Sub-District for I think five or six years, and I just wonder what some clubs are doing about it. “We ask them all the time about growth within their own cricket club because they’re now a first eleven team. We’ve put in player points to minimise not being able to financially reward people or share the money around, and we’ve actually even given money back to the clubs on all royalties we negotiate with Kookaburra and stuff like that. “We’re trying put money back into it and make it easier for everyone to promote, to recruit and do things they’ve just got to get off their backsides and help us.” With around 200 people in attendance at Donnelly Reserve on Sunday, it showed the grassroots support for cricket in the south east is absolutely alive and well. The WGCA went from having 59 junior teams last season to 70 on the eve of season 2015/'16. For more information, search for ‘West Gippsland Cricket Association’ on Facebook.

Lightning to field side in the SFL By JARROD POTTER THE Lightning is in. The City of Casey based football club has made its choice. It will affiliate with the Southern Football Netball League and will put a senior men’s team into the 2016 Division 3 competition. After a meeting with Southern FNL officials on Monday night, the club decided the league was the right fit as it expands from just juniors into the senior football ranks. Lyndhurst president Andrew King said the club joined the Southern FNL as opposed to South East FNL, Nepean or the VAFA as it geographically and divisionally suited the club perfectly. “We felt that was probably the best fit for us for the time being in our early stages,” King said. “They’ve got divisions that we think we can be competitive in, and geographically probably the best fit for us at the moment.” The club has yet to figure out

if it will put a Thirds side into the competition alongside its Division 3 side and will host a public meeting at Marriott Waters Reserve on Sunday 18 October at 10am to gauge numbers and lock down its total playing list heading into next season. “That’s really a call to arms to have everyone there that’s interested in playing or being official,” King said. “We’ll have a coach appointed by then, and we’ll need to know our total numbers at the end of that day to dictate what division we’d go into. “We’ve had 20-25 training for the last three months, so the minimum we’ll have is definitely one team, so it will definitely go ahead.” For people in the Lyndhurst area wanting to hunt down the red leather, the club has encouraged all to come along and give Lightning football a crack. “Everyone is welcome to come down and have a crack for sure,” King said. “We’re in a development stage really - the 24 or so that

we have at the moment are young blokes that have played a bit of footy and have been training over the winter. “Definitely know there’s a few older heads that haven’t trained but expressed an interest in playing and will complement the younger brigade.” Lyndhurst Football and Netball Club is now searching for an inaugural senior coach for the following position for the Southern Football League Division 3 2016 season. Applications should be directed to Lyndhurst Football Netball Club vice-president Isaak Iliadis at vicepresident@lfnc.com. au and for more information on the club visit the Lightning’s website www.lfnc.com.au or its Facebook page facebook.com/ lfnclightning. Other positions with the senior team - runners, team manager and trainers - are also open to application. Lyndhurst is the third club in the City of Casey region to join Southern FNL in the last five years, following the path taken by Endeavour Hills and Hallam.

Hayley’s massive future By JARROD POTTER CRANBOURNE Women’s Football Club premiership hero Hayley Wildes claimed one more prize to cap off her stellar debut VWFL season. Wildes, 18, from Lang Lang, had been a perennial feature in the Eagles’ best each week for the Division 1 side, and her efforts throughout the season earned her the league’s Debbie Lee Medal - awarded to the league’s best first year player. Wildes shared the trophy with St Kilda’s Brianna Davey at the awards night held last week and couldn’t quite believe she was held in such high esteem across the league. “I wasn’t expecting it at all - I went there and was invited, so I thought something was happening, but I didn’t know that was on the cards,” Wildes said. “It means a fair bit; I knew I had a pretty good, consistent year ... I didn’t think I was one of the top first year players in the league but I’ll take it.” Stepping up from Cranbourne’s Youth Girls team this year, the former South East Juniors phenomenon brought her best attributes to the Eagles’ senior ranks: run-and-carry, dogged attack on the footy and a monstrous right boot that makes her one of the longest kicks in the competition. But despite her outstanding 2015, Wildes admits getting used to the senior standard was a challenge she relished. “It’s a lot different - a lot harder and faster, but I’d played a few women’s games the last two years, and I

thought I was ready but it was definitely a big step up and I enjoyed the challenge,” Wildes said. She has ended the season with 43 goals, nine times in the best on ground and an incredible four-goal haul in a match-winning performance in the grand final - including two majors well into fourth term red time to steal the premiership from under Knox’s nose. “Going into the year, I didn’t really know how we’d go, but that first game when we beat St Kilda I thought we were going to be pretty decent this year ... then to win the granny by a point was pretty good. “I thought cause that snap was a pretty straightforward goal really, the handball out from the team mate, perfect handball to me and I had to finish it off and I did.” Wildes was thrilled at the prospect of Cranbourne potentially entering the VWFL’s Premier Division in 2016 as all she wanted to do was continue her football development against the best around the state. “I’m pretty sure that it’s happening, and I want it to happen as you always want to play against the best and see how you go,” Wildes said. “It’s definitely a big step up again though and we wouldn’t be winning by 100 points any games - it would certainly be different but I think we’re ready.” Wildes wanted to thank Kris Smith, Keith Edwards her junior team Lang Lang Football Club and her parents for their ongoing support.

Hampton Park in good nick BOWLS pennant starts in earnest next week, and Hampton Park’s final practice matches earned sold results. Unfortunately, the Tuesday’s games were abandoned early due to the weather. Saturday saw Cranbourne RSL visit with three teams for good results for both clubs. Hampton Park’s division 1 had an 81-all draw. Division 3 had a good 93-65 win and Division 6, a 71-72 loss. Saturday pennant next weekend will be played on Sunday due to the AFL Grand Final. Sunday saw the quarter finals of the Casey Division over 60s pairs, with Peter Hayden and Geoff Ampt competing. They had a solid start, keeping the scores close, but faltered late in the game to lose by 7, 12-19.

THE Tooradin Dalmore Football Club has sincerely thanked everyone who supported their major raffle this year. The Seagulls also thanked Cameron and Katrina McLeish of Freeway Ford in Cranbourne for their ongoing support over many years, and in addition to that Ford Australia. Both companies contributed to supplying a brand new Ford Falcon XR6 ute as the main prize, which Lindsay and Norma Hyde won. The club congratulates them on their win, and has wished them many years of happy motoring.

Two Cranbourne footy legends recognised By RUSSELL BENNETT CRANBOURNE superstar Marc Holt and coach Simon Goosey have been named as two of the Herald Sun’s ‘Country Footy Legends’. The metropolitan daily released its list of the best country footballers from across Victoria over the past 25 years, and Holt and Goosey featured in the South East section - along with 43-yearold Sorrento icon Guy Stringer. The two truly legendary full for-

wards fell short of winning another premiership at Cranbourne this season, but they’ll both be back with a vengeance in 2016. From Gippsland, Maffra brothers Adrian and Hayden Burgiel also made the list - as did Martin Cameron and Greg ‘Googa’ Morley from Traralgon. From the Yarra Ranges region, Wandin gun Jarrod Bayliss featured as did revered Yarra Valley figure Jason De Graaf, and Paddy Sharp and Danny Ryan from Woori Yallock.

Some of Gippsland footy’s biggest alumni have chimed in with their thoughts on some of the potential snubs. Some huge names in the history of the Garfield footy club feature massively. Local footy fans have put their favourites forward, with the Sun reporting that inspirational Western Bulldogs skipper - and Warragul product - Bob Murphy chimed in with a vote for Ben Soumilas. “But Soumilas, the All-Austra-

lian captain’s brother-in-law, said his younger brother Andy or former teammate Lincoln Withers would be more deserving of legend status,” a 28 September article on the Herald Sun website, titled ‘Victoria’s country football legends: Feats that turned players into local heroes’, reads. According to the article, Sydney premiership player, former Gippsland Power star and Drouin product Luke Ablett also backed Andy Soumilas to be on the list.

Garmin Map Pilot satellite navigation is standard across the range as is an Audio 20 sound system; single-disc CD player; Bluetooth phone plus audio streaming; and USB and Aux sockets. Getting underway is likely to prove a bit of a chore for the uninitiated. The start/stop button is tucked away on the dashboard behind the steering wheel, the parking brake lever (push for on and pull for off) is on the right hand side of the dashboard and the gear shifter is a small stalk mounted on the right-hand side of the steering column. THE Mercedes B-Class has been on sale in Australia for almost a decade, having evolved from one of Benz’s cleverest products, the A-Class city car. The latter was one of the first little-big cars – managing to combine a small exterior with a deceptively large, strictly two-seat interior, largely through its tall body. The B-Class inherited many of these qualities but with a more conventional styling than its boxier older sibling, but nevertheless it’s still taller than the average five-door hatchback. The benefits include easy step-in access, a relatively high driving height and excellent rear head and headroom, even when fitted with the optional panoramic twin-sunroof. The latest B-Class arrived here in March with the mildest of facelifts that include a new bumper, wider radiator grille and integrated daytime running light. The rear bumper is also new with some chromed highlights. Engine capacities and outputs are unchanged but there are a number of interior enhancements including the inevitable infotainment catch-ups. There are four engine options in the Benz Bs, three petrol and one diesel – all turbocharged. The B 180 and B 200 get the same 1.6-litre turbo-petrol but in different levels of tune. The B 180 peaks at 90kW and 200Nm with the B 200 tweaked up to 115kW and 250Nm. In line with its sportier credentials the B 250 4Matic comes with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and outputs of 155kW and 350Nm. The B 200 CDI comes with a 100kW/300Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel unit. Official fuel consumption ranges from 4.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the B 200 TDI to 6.8 L/100km in the B 250. The latter also uses allwheel drive, the other three are driven by the front wheels. All models have seven-speed direct-shift automatic transmission. All variants come with nine airbags; ABS brakes with Brake Assist and Hill Start Assist; Electronic Stability Control with Acceleration Skid Control; brake pad wear indicator; Pre-Safe accident anticipatory system; automatic headlights; front and rear parking sensors; and reversing camera. The B 200 and B 250 models also get LED headlamps; full LED rear lamp cluster including brake and reversing light; and Blind Spot Assist. In addition to all-wheel drive the B 250 has an anti-theft alarm system with interior monitoring and tow-away protection. There is no spare wheel in any model, instead using run-flat safety tyres with a pressure loss warning system. A 16-inch space saver spare wheel can be purchased as an accessory. The boot can take a healthy 488 litres although that will be reduced if you opt for the spare which can be strapped onto the top of the boot floor. New to the 2015 B-Class is an eight-inch colour screen that sits on top of the dashboard. We have seen retractable screens in this location but in the Merc it’s fixed, possibly because of its size. Nor is it a touchscreen, instead being controlled

Opened up for the space By ALISTAIR KENNEDY THE Mercedes B-Class has been on sale in Australia for almost a decade, having evolved from one of Benz’s cleverest products, the A-Class city car. The latter was one of the first littlebig cars - managing to combine a small exterior with a deceptively large, strictly two-seat interior, largely through its tall body. The B-Class inherited many of these qualities but with a more conventional styling than its boxier older sibling but, nevertheless, it’s still taller than the average five-door hatchback. The benefits include easy step-in access, a relatively high driving height and excellent rear head and headroom, even when fitted with the optional panoramic twin-sunroof. The latest B-Class arrived here in March 2015 with the mildest of facelifts that include a new bumper, wider radiator grille and integrated daytime running light. The rear bumper is also new with some chromed highlights. Engine capacities and outputs are unchanged but there are a number of interior enhancements including the inevitable infotainment catch-ups. There are four engine options in the Benz Bs, three petrol and one diesel all turbocharged. The B 180 and B 200 get the same 1.6-litre turbo-petrol but in different levels of tune. The B 180 peaks at 90 kW and 200 Nm with the B 200 tweaked up to 115 kW and 250 Nm. In line with its sportier credentials

Model range B 180 1.6-litre 90kW turbopetrol five-door hatch: $41,400 (automatic) B 200 1.6-litre 115kW turbo-petrol five-door hatch: $47,400 B 200 CDI 2.2-litre turbodiesel five-door hatch: $47,900 B 250 4MATIC 2.0-litre turbo-petrol five-door hatch: $54,200 Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a sensible compact SUV alternative. the B 250 4Matic comes with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and outputs of 155 kW and 350 Nm. The B 200 CDI comes with a 100 kW / 300 Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel unit. Official fuel consumption ranges from 4.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the B 200 TDI to 6.8 L/100 km in the B 250. The latter also uses all-wheel drive, the other three are driven by the front wheels. All models have seven-speed direct-shift automatic transmission. All variants come with nine airbags; ABS brakes with Brake Assist and Hill Start Assist; Electronic Stability Con-

trol with Acceleration Skid Control; brake pad wear indicator; Pre-Safe accident anticipatory system; automatic headlights; front and rear parking sensors; and reversing camera. A 16-inch space saver spare wheel can be purchased as an accessory.

streaming; and USB and Aux sockets. It’s a prestige brand and so prices are higher but there is that big threepointed star on the grille. Nor is it a touchscreen, instead being controlled through a mouse-type knob in the centre console area, a safer, less distracting option in our opinion. Garmin Map Pilot satellite navigation is standard across the range as is an Audio 20 sound system; single-disc CD player; Bluetooth phone plus audio
