THE Otway Ranges are a prime location to introduce controlled marijuana crops, according to the leader of the Australian Sex Party. Fiona Patten said the Otways could become an international supplier of medical marijuana to help overcome a global shortage. “The Otways is one of the great places to grow a controlled crop for medicinal purposes,” Ms Patten told the Independent yesterday. She identified the Owtays’ potential as state and federal governments continued considering legalisation of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Ms Patten said areas such as the Otways had the right climate to grow the drug without the prohibitive heating costs of nations that had already legalised it for medicinal purposes, such as Canada, the Czech Republic and Israel. “There’s a global shortage of medicinal marijuana and it’s a highly profitable export crop,” she said. “This a great renewable resource ... it gives us a great chance to reinvigorate the farming communities.”
Ms Patten said legalising the growth of medicinal marijuana could also revive the hemp industry. “If this is done properly we could become a leader in the supply of this product.” The Otways have a history of illegal marijuana cultivation, which has led to many major drug busts over recent decades. Ms Patten, a Victorian Upper House MP, welcomed the State Government’s consideration of a “cultivation trial” of cannabis for medical purposes as long as it was under strict supervision. Federal Greens leader Dr Richard Di Natale, who has a property at Deans Marsh, introduced a medicinal cannabis bill that earned a senate committee’s unanimous backing. Senator Di Natale said it was” a significant step toward achieving medicinal cannabis reform”. “This issue is not about politics, it’s about getting medicine to people who need it,” he told the Independent. “We have an opportunity to relieve the pain and suffering of many Australians if we can just come together and show Parliament at its best.”

FOR JENNY Griffiths, teaching at Norlane’s St Aquinas Primary School is much more than just classroom time. Ms Griffiths is no stranger to juggling multiple extracurricular learning activities and after-school programs with her already-hectic teaching schedule. Her diverse role covers everything from reading-recovery teacher, literacy and pastoral care leadership and lunchtime reading club coordination through to managing early-morning breakfasts and refugee program Mercy Connect. On top of all, she also runs Saint Thomas Aquinas’s mentoring program for children, known as STAMPS. Ms Griffith’s dedication and passion for teaching was among local success stories celebrated during Literacy and Numeracy Week. “It’s an absolute pleasure to work with such a diverse group of children and their families (in) a rewarding job that has motivated me to continue my role at the school for so long,” she said. “One of my favourite programs is Mercy Connect, (which) I’ve been coordinating for three years now. We work with refugee children in the school to teach them English and help them integrate with ease. “Mercy Connect also welcomes volunteers from the community to help the children’s parents learn to read and write, so it’s not only about the children but the whole family as well.” Ms Griffiths enjoyed helping students “integrate into the broader community“. “I love being a part of Norlane; it’s grown immensely over the years and developed into a budding community that’s very supportive of each other, full of wonderful young kids with a bright future.”

Double Take
PATIENTS must wonder what’s going on at University Hospital Geelong (previously known as Geelong Hospital) when it charges them $10 a day for access to television channels, with the alternative of looking at the ceiling from their hospital beds. In a major concession, the charge drops to $9 a day for pensioners or health-card holders. However, anyone who doesn’t want to pay finds that the racing channel comes on automatically. Maybe the idea’s sponsored by the betting agencies.
Oh boy! Is it that time of year again? I think it is, because I’m starting to see all those usual posts on my Facebook feed. No not holidays, but hoaxes. You know the type. he ones that get you to copy and paste a paragraph of text that somehow keeps your proile set to private being shared by all your friends on facebook who’s understanding of facebook and how the internet in general works is limited to what they see in front of their face which is the social equivalent of believing that the word “gullible truly is not found in the dictionary. GEELONG’S unusual tradition of comically dressed robbers flared again twice this week. First a bloke held up an APCO servo at Newcomb while wearing a pink and purple hat decorated with a cow print and pom-poms. Then another ne’er-do-well in a clown mask held up a 7-11 in central Geelong yesterday morning. The pair trod a well-worn path of crooks who have tried to rip off traders while dressed in everything from drag to wigs and an assortment of other bizarre masks. So much for the traditional stocking over the head, although finding matching hosiery would be a challenge. But what could be the inspiration for the strange disguises? Inspector Double Take suspects the Cats’ Mad Monday outfits.
HACKERS are usually associated with thieving from computers. But there are good hackers too, with governments and Geelong’s council even encouraging them with awards and prizes. The first GovHack event, held in Geelong in July, attracted 60 participants, with seven of the resulting apps and websites receiving awards. A Mighty Ducks Stormwater Tracker by Rubber Ducks won a $400 prize for showing exactly which river, creek or bay litter ends up in when it goes down the drain. If only there was an app to track where our hardearned taxpayer and ratepayers dollars go. THEY might eat the odd surfer but sharks are also “unlikely heroes protecting humanity, according to the latest left-field research out of Geelong’s Deakin University. What on Earth could sharks protect humans from? Er, climate change, apparently. Deakin scientists argue that sharks limit atmospheric carbon dioxide by eating turtles, which in turn eat sea grass, which in turn stores CO2. Therefore, fewer sharks means more turtles, which means less sea grass and more C02 in the atmosphere. The Deakin boffins posit a simple solution: stop eating so many sharks. Okay, but only if they stop eating us first!

Crims ‘targeting guns’ By PAUL MILLAR GEELONG is the state’s leader in firearm theft, with some villains stealing arms to order. Police statistics supplied to the Independent show at least 66 weapons were stolen from the greater Geelong district from January 2014 to 18 April 2015. Surf Coast had 15 weapons stolen, while Golden Plains recorded six, according to the LEAP police data base. Geelong police Inspector Gary Bruce said burglars had specifically targeted firearms in recent years. “It’s always a concern when fire-

Firearms ‘stolen to order’ arms are stolen,” he said. “Our message to gun owners is to make sure your weapon and your ammunition are secure.” Insp Bruce said firearms were easily disposable in the underworld. Some criminals were placing orders for the weapons they wanted, he said. “The offenders buy guns and cut them down, they think they need something like that. “They’re targeting properties on the fringes of Geelong. Some of these
properties are isolated, both adults are out of the house and at work during the day.” Insp Bruce said investigators had been closely monitoring recidivist offenders while encouraging multiplegun owners to beef up security. “We’ve done a significant amount of work with gun owners over firearm storage over recent years. Make sure your gun safe is hidden as much as possible so that friends or people who visit don’t see it.” Police Minister Wade Noonan re-
cently announced new laws to help a crackdown on gun thefts from registered owners on farms and other rural properties in Victoria. The reforms include trafficking prosecutions for anyone caught with three or more unregistered firearms over a 12-month period. The new laws will also help Victoria Police deal with the firearms of serious and organised-crime groups, such as bikies, when they are found with weapons but deny knowlege or ownership of the guns. The laws will place the onus on gang members to show the firearm is not in their possession.
In brief HQ welcomed UP TO 300 jobs could flow from plans to make Geelong headquarters for a multi-billion-dollar project building armoured combat vehicles, according to Mayor Darryn Lyons. He welcomed Land 400 contract bidder Team Sentinel’s plan, which would partly build the vehicles in Geelong and bring in other components from around the country.
Clown ‘robbery’ POLICE expect to charge a man who allegedly wore a clown mask to rob a 7-Eleven in central Geelong yesterday morning. Police alleged the 23-year-old from Whittington threatened an attendant with a knife before stealing a bag and fleeing, with officers arresting him in Geelong soon afterward.
Tea expo GEELONG will host Australia’s “largest celebration of tea”, councillor Ron Nelson has announced. He said the Australian International Tea Expo would bring more than 50 exhibitors to The Pier from 17 to 18 October.
Holiday hike TEN PER cent price hikes and closed doors are set to greet shoppers in Torquay today as the town’s traders body protests the grand final public holiday. President Barrie Sutherland (pictured) warned of the “surcharge” and one-day closures in response to increased labour costs from penalty rates applied to the new state holiday.
Race upgrade THE CADEL Evans Great Ocean Road Race is now just one step away from becoming a world cycling tour event, according to Sport Minister John Eren. He said Union Cycliste Internationale granted the event a classification upgrade yesterday, leaving the event just one category below UCI World Tour standard.
Woman found
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A SECONDARY student who brought solar lights to an isolated African village has been named Geelong Volunteer of the Year. Sarah Kenworthy’s inspiring story, raising $12,000 so she could take 1300 solar lights to Mannya, Uganda, was chronicled in the autumn 2015 Geelong Coast Magazine. Chair of the Rotary Club of Geelong Youth Committee, Anne Kavenagh, said Sarah was an amazing and humble young woman who deserved to be recognised. Ms Kavenagh said the South Geelong teen’s volunteerism began with leadership roles at primary and Sacred Heart College.
“Her first ventures into volunteering in Geelong began when, in primary school, she organised a fundraiser for the victims of Black Saturday. “Sarah helped organise a Make a Difference group at school working to increase awareness of the less fortunate and to raise funds for local causes. “She organised weekly lunchtime meetings to make blankets for homeless people in Geelong. “Over the past six years Sarah has volunteered for the Refugee Holiday Event, Christ Church meal program, Cafe Light and St Mary’s Basilica’s Café. “She has given her time to visit the elderly at nursing homes, sing Christmas Carols at nursing homes, give Christmas hampers to the less fortu-
nate and organised activities at Reclaim the Night, Young Vinnies, Geelong Hospital and Leopold Carols by Candlelight.” Ms Kavenagh said Sarah took on a “relentless” speaking program visiting schools, churches and community organisations to raise awareness of the needs in Uganda. Because Sarah is such a passionate, selfless advocate, her commitment volunteering has inspired many young Geelong residents to also become volunteers. “Despite being diagnosed with coeliac disease, Sarah is selflessly committed to community service and social justice. “Her efforts have led her to realise that she wishes to study medicine and to work with the underprivileged.”
$100m listing, new contract for carbon wheel firm GEELONG’S pioneering carbon fibre wheel manufacturer, Carbon Revolution, plans a $100 million initial public offer to fund an ambitious expansion strategy. The Waurn Ponds-based company has also signed a contract with a major North American manufacturer of aircraft landing gear, according to reports in the financial media. The agreement, for light weight carbon fibre wheels in the aerospace
industry, follows Carbon Revolution’s deal to supply wheels for Ford’s new Shelby Mustang GT350R sports car. Carbon Revolution hopes the $100 million IPO in late 2017 or early 2018 would enable the company to list on the share market with a value of around $300 million. The funds would be used to ramp up production at its $24 million plant at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus, making up to 50,000 wheels
a year by 2017 and 250,000 a year by 2020. Carbon Revolution chief Jake Dingle told the Independent in July he hoped the Ford contract would be a forerunner to further deals for highperformance vehicles. Carbon Revolution plans to use the IPO funds to build manufacturing plants in North America, Europe and Asia to service the major car makers.
The company already sells wheels into vehicle aftermarkets for marques including Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren, BMW and Audi. Mr Dingle said the deals could double the company’s employment to 300, with Carbon Revolution already employing ex-Ford and Alcoa staff. Carbon fibre wheels offer significant weight savings for the aerospace, defence and trucking industries, where it translates into fuel savings.

Anti-military ‘trespassers’ plan to sue over Queenscliff arrests
ADF refuses to name soldiers By PAUL MILLAR THE DEFENCE Department will refuse to disclose the identity of soldiers who intercepted protesters after they breached security at a top-secret Swan Island training facility. Three of the protesters claim Defence Force members assaulted them when they snuck onto the Queenscliff base, where the army trains elite troops, including SAS soldiers. Law firm Maurice Blackburn has filed proceedings in the Victorian Su-
preme Court to force Defence and the Commonwealth to provide the names of the soldiers involved in the incident last October. Lawyer Jacob Varghese said the protesters would then sue them for assault and battery. But a Defence spokesman said the names would remain secret. The protesters who reached the island were trespassers, he said. “Four of the protesters were arrested by Victoria Police, the remaining four
individuals were arrested by Defence members before being handed over to the Victoria Police. These individuals were subsequently charged with trespass offences.” The spokesman said a Defence inquiry was considering the protesters’ allegations of mistreatment as well as their alleged trespassing. The department respected Australians’ right to express opinions in a peaceful, law-abiding way but soldiers also had a right to arrest trespassers, he said. “ADF members have the power under
relevant legislation to arrest individuals who enter Defence premises without authorisation. At the time of the incident the protesters were trespassing on the Swan Island training facility.” Defence had counselled the soldiers about the “manner and measure of their response” to the incident, the spokesperson said. He confirmed the department had received a request to disclose their identities. “Defence has declined to name the members ... Defence has not received
any civil legal proceedings arising from this incident.” The protesters claimed they were part of a peace movement objecting to Australia’s involvement in foreign wars. A number of unidentified officers confronted them when they swam onto the island, they said. The protesters alleged they “were thrown to the ground and dragged, had bags put over their heads and were stripped naked”. One was allegedly threatened with rape and another with drowning.

IT’S high time State and Federal governments actually invested in the region’s two peri-urban councils, according to the head of the region’s council alliance organisation G21 chief Elaine Carbines said Surf Coast and Golden Plains shires were in danger of being left behind without government commitments to infrastructure matching population growth. “We want to see from them what their commitments are. We need those levels of government to listen and act because otherwise we’ll lose the amenity of the region, ” Ms Carbines said. “We have a regional growth plan and an infrastructure plan, which is a precautionary planning tool and has been incorporated into State planning provisions. The challenge is for the infrastructure to keep up with the pace of growth.” The issue was highlighted this week
when the Opposition’s planning spokesman David Davis visited the region. Mr Davis said Bannockburn alone was predicted to grow an average 8.6 per cent a year to 2031 for total growth of 173 per cent. Figures from a Peri Urban Group of Rural Councils show Surf Coast and Golden Plains face massive growth rates without adequate resources to cope. Surf Coast and Golden Plains are predicted to grow 52 and 41 per cent respectively by 2031. Ms Carbines said G21’s regional growth plans clearly forecast that Bannockburn and Torquay-Jan Juc would be among the state’s fastest growing areas. “We’ve been advocating to state and federal governments and oppositions to keep pace. Issues like duplicating the Midland Highway from Bannockburn to the ring road, is enormous, because that is just an accident waiting to happen.”

Dirty toilets, litter for tourists By PAUL MILLAR FILTHY toilets and overflowing bins could greet thousands of tourists in the region’s state forests and national parks this long weekend as union bans start to bite. Australian Workers Union said it would also enforce bans on planned burns following State
We’ll ‘understand need for bans’, says union Government “lethargy” over an enterprise agreement. A union leader said the government was refusing to recognise the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s forest firefighting force as emergency service workers.
“We have warned them of this for months,” said union state secretary Ben Davis. Parks, especially the Otways and the You Yangs, will draw thousands of visitors as warm weather coincides with the new grand final public holiday.
Mr Davis said the union had been left with little option other than industrial action to advance its claims. “It’s not ideal and the public will be inconvenienced but I believe they’ll understand. “We have not had proper talks
with the government since the end of last summer,” he said, admitting that talks with government officials this week had failed to advance the union’s demands. “This government appears too lethargic to respond to issues that are taken very seriously by our
members and the people of regional Victoria in particular.” The union said it had given the department notice informing of a ban on planned burns on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The bans would extend to an indefinite stop on falling trees for firewood as well as cleaning toilets and collecting rubbish in picnic areas.
Croatian robot whizzes turn on to Deakin lab’s expertise A wild time By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN in Geelong

THE expertise of Deakin University’s robotics lab electrified a team of young whizzes from Croatia when they visited Geelong this week. The Croatian Junior Robotic Team is no slouch itself, having scored second place medals at an Australian National Robocup junior competition in Adelaide last weekend. Croatian Ambassador Dr Damir Kusen, who organised the team’s visit, said the young enthusiasts found it difficult to drag themselves away from Deakin’s Centre for Intelligent System Research, Robotics and Motion Simulation Lab. “It’s a language kids understand. All kids are interested in robotics,” Dr Kusen said. The team also put on a robotics demonstration and workshop for more than 50 students at Holy Family Primary School, even though its students were still holidays. Dr Kusen said the team would participate in an Exhibition of Robotics at the Croatian Embassy in Canberra, together with high-tech educational institutions and companies. “One of the highlights will be the first ever soccer match between Australia and Croatia, played by robots,” Dr Kusen said. “We’ll also demonstrate a robotic competition of an equestrian chivalric tournament called Sinjska Alka, a 300 year-old tradition in Croatia. “We’re keen to encourage student exchanges and use this as an opportunity to bring the two countries closer together through the culture of innovation.”
WILDLIFE tourism professionals have migrated to Geelong for the biggest event of its kind - the Australian Wildlife Tourism Conference. Australia’s most-prominent wildlife tourism operators, international academics and government decisionmakers gathered at the Mercure Hotel for the three-day conference, finishing today. Tourism Minister John Eren said the event, also partly held in Melbourne, canvassed Victoria’s range of wildlife tourism activities and venues. “This conference is our chance to showcase our strengths to industry experts from all over Australia.” Wildlife Tourism Australia’s Janine Duffy said nature was one of Australia’s biggest attractions. “Interest in genuine wildlife tours is expanding rapidly. We are exploring the best way to enjoy and protect our unique wildlife resource and how we define the benefits of wildlife tourism to regional communities.” Organisers said field trips before and after the conference travelled to the Mornington Peninsula, East Gippsland, Wilson’s Promontory, the You Yangs, Phillip Island and Mt Rothwell.

Dual rail track call for ‘choke’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
BCC 13749 Aug15
DUPLICATION of the railway line between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds would remove a “choke point” for local rail services, according to Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. Ms Henderson this week hosted deputy prime minister Warren Truss as part of her campaign for improved rail services in Geelong. “As Geelong and south-west Victoria continue to grow, the duplication of the rail track, particularly between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, is becoming a greater priority for our region,” she said. “The current (15km) single track between Geelong and Waurn Ponds is a choke point on the line, as trains running in the opposite direction cannot pass each other. “This places many constraints on the train services that can be offered to and from Geelong, Colac and south-west Victoria.
Boral Concrete - Waurn Ponds Boral Concrete now operating and servicing the Geelong Area. Boral Concrete is one of the leaders in the Australian building & construction industry, with over 60 years experience in manufacturing and delivery of pre-mixed concrete. We cater to all types of customers from the handy man, residential concrete placer, home builder, through to supply of large commercial projects.
ALL ABOARD: Warren Truss and Sarah Henderson at Marshall Railway Station on Wednesday. 144979 Picture: REG RYAN “For instance, 13 trains leave Geelong station prior to 8am (but) only six depart from Waurn Ponds. “Services are also constrained by the fact there’s only one operational platform at South Geelong and Marshall stations.” The Geelong line is V/Line’s busiest commuter line with more than 4 million trips in 2013/2014 after patronage grew 18.5 per cent
in the previous five years. Public Transport Users Association Geelong convenor Paul Westcott said the duplication was the remaining key public transport improvement needed in the region. “Now that there’s been a change of management at the top of the Federal Government we can perhaps look to federal funding for public transport in Geelong.” Mr Westcott said the project would not have to duplicate the single-track tunnel between Geelong and South Geelong stations. “That bottleneck wouldn’t be an issue because it only takes two or three minutes to get through. “As long as you have duplication of sufficiently long parts of the track you can have services passing each other. “The project could be staged depending on the funds available but as Armstrong Creek grows more people will use Waurn Ponds station, creating more pressure to finalise the duplication.”

Storages lower after dry September SEPTEMBER was a disappointing month for rain. Geelong received only about 60 per cent of its 30-year average, or 32mm compared to 50mm. Most of the region reported similar results. Rain was recorded on only 12 days, with the heaviest delivering 12.6mm at Breakwater on 15 September. Several promising days resulted in a disappointment, fizzling out after early optimism. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts an average chance of median rain for the coming three months, which offers some opti-

mism for farmers, gardeners and water managers. This week Barwon Water measured the region’s storages at 62 per cent of capacity, which is not a good entry point going into the spring-summer period. As for temperatures, September was close to average at .2C above the 30-year figure.
The warmest day reached 28.3C on 14 September and the coldest were 12.9C and 12.7C on 22 and 23 September respectively. The month had only frost, which occurred when the minimum dropped to 1.9C on 1 September. Only one strong wind gust was recorded for the month, with 61km/h blow on 6 September. Several fogs and one thunder day, on 14 September, were also recorded but the month lacked any severe storms or other notable weather events.

When I irst joined Corrections Victoria, I was of the belief that I would be entering a hostile environment every day, but that’s actually not the case. That’s not to say that you don’t have your issues from day to day. It’s very important to listen and observe, demonstrate good judgement, and have a sense of humour. It has become a very culturally diverse workplace, and I just love working in this job with a great bunch of people.

Letters Free trade outdated I WAS surprised to see that Simon Ramsay MP (Letters, 25 September) is still pushing the same outdated claims made by Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey. When questioned whether the free trade agreement (FTA) with China would cost thousands of Australian jobs in hospitality and tourism alone, new Treasurer Scott Morrison said that if hotels and cruise ships cannot compete with China they should import labour from overseas. So much for Mr Ramsay’s claim that Labor and the unions are scaremongering. As for the money that Simon Ramsay claimed will be lost to Australian farmers if the FTA with China falls though, for this we only have to look at the effect of our FTA with the USA. America buys poor-quality pork on the open market and then on-sells it to Australia as Americanprocessed pork. This costs Australian farmers millions of dollars and thousands of jobs a year and, also, we can no longer buy top-quality Australianprocessed pork locally. Likewise we buy from America diseased Canadian Pacific salmon that has had its price cut deliberately to try putting our Tasmanian salmon farmers out of business. We should note that Canadian salmon is outlawed in the UK. So much for Mr Ramsay’s claim that FTAs are good for farmers. B Fletcher Highton
Government by committee IT WAS reported that Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins discussed with Committee for Geelong potential changes to our system of electing the mayor. Surely the changes should be discussed with our councilors, who represent us, the ratepayers. Since when did Committee for Geelong have any authority to act on our behalf? Bob Thompson Ocean Grove

We need Credlin peddlin' GIVEN that the region's potentially most-effective advocacy vehicle is the ratepayer-funded G21, why shouldn't it be headed - up by someone who knows the ropes in Canberra? Stranger things have happened. Why couldn't G21 recalibrate and reach out to Tony Abbott's former chief of staff and Sacred Heart College alumni Peta Credlin to crank up the five municipalities’ interests and potential? Ms Credlin's work ethic and resultant credibility are known and respected across the political divide. To his credit, opposition leader Bill Shorten was supportive of her “formidable” imprimatur. With the 2016 federal poll looming, leverage upside in Corangamite and ordinary representation in Corio, Ms Credlin's political and public service connections, drive and the likelihood of the return of the Turnbull Coalition Government would shore-up the region's advocacy effectiveness and outcomes in spades. Big-ticket potential job-providers such as Avalon Airport, defence contracts, speedy broadband implementation, duplication of the Princes Hwy between Winchelsea and Colac, realistic Great Ocean Road funding upgrades and a 24/7 interactive Yarra St Pier would all benefit from Ms Credlin commitment, networking and drive. For queen, not country IN RESPONSE to Roopublican (Buckets & Bouquets, 18 September), Malcolm Turnbull’s ascension will do nothing to improve Australia’s political fortunes. Smiling assassins like Turnbull, Julie Bishop, Sarah Henderson et cetera would sell their

own mothers to guarantee their political and financial survival. In 1999 in his role with the Australian Republican Movement, Mr Turnbull ensured the referendum failed to include Australian’s right to elect its own Australian head of state. The process was a sham designed to fail. Mr Turnbull is the consummate arrogant political pretender whose exuberance will quickly disappear. Australia has collapsed from an industrial powerhouse into a debt-laden, colonial-style raw materials quarry for foreign mining interests such as the Queen’s Rio Tinto. Section 51 of the Australian Constitution states the people, through parliament, possess power over banking and money supply. But the Crown expanded its powers to override sovereign actions deemed threatening to British money power by altering our constitution. Mr Turnbull will ensure this rotten system continues to flourish to enrich his ilk. Ralph Huisman Belmont
We can win race challenge “F****** learn to speak English, you f****** c***, that’s what you’re being f****** paid for.” A woman launched this disgusting racial attack on three innocent Muslim women outside Centrelink. Why are we, as a society, still so hateful and prejudiced against people of other races? We are all human with hearts, brains, feelings and dreams. Our only differences are the colour of our skins and languages. It is human nature to fear and mock what is different or what we don’t understand. We seem only to see ugly labels and not the beautiful individual person. Equality is a beautiful word and thought but is far from achieved. We have a long way to go before we can truly say equality is practised as well as preached. As a challenge to readers, I ask everyone to say something nice to a person of a different race, not just this week but every day, or just to smile and nod when passing someone of another race. Let’s show our racially diverse citizens that hateful, bigoted and racist people are the minority, not the majority. Suzanne Bridson Herne Hill

‘COME to the cabaret’ goes the line from the famous song but Waurn Ponds Hotel is instead bringing the cabaret to Geelong. Hotel manager Margaret Spence said the new Tuesday Cabaret was great for all ages. Sydney’s legendary piano man John Watson and his band would be on hand on the first Tuesday of each month to liven up proceedings, Spence said. The program would pair Watson with one of Australia’s most sought-after entertainers, singers, comedians, magicians or theatre performers at each monthly event. Watson, a popular pianist and singer from Sydney, had performed for celebrities such as Alan Jones, Brett Lee, Glen McGrath, Michael Parkinson and Anthony Pratt, Spence said.
“He’ll be playing all the hits from the 1920s through to the 1980s, including some of the great sing-along songs for the young and old. “A special guest artist will be flown in from Sydney to entertain after lunch, backed by John Watson and his band. “Our first show features international comedian Al Showman and future shows will present singer, actor and dancer Derek Metzger from London’s West End plus many more fantastic performers. “This brand-new concept of Tuesday Cabaret has traditional sing-along songs that many people love and enjoy.” The shows will also feature more up-to-date sing-along songs from Elton John, Billy Joel and Neil Diamond plus a few surprises. “After the morning sing-

A GUITARIST renowned as ‘The Lord of the Strings’ will perform at Geelong College this month. Promoters said Matthew Fagan was “Australia’s leading all-round acoustic guitarist”. He played a 10-string guitar during a “vibrant musical journey with a magical repertoire” covering styles from flamenco and Celtic through to bluegrass, folk, blues and rock, the promoters said. “As a touring musician Matthew has followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Milton Parkes, and great-uncle Cecil Parkes, Australia’s child prodigy in the 1920s who was personally chosen by Dame Nellie Melba as her star attraction on patriotic Australasian tours.” Scottish comedian Billy Connolly described Fagan as “the best guest artist I have ever toured with”. Fagan plays the college’s senior campus from 7.30pm 15 October, with tickets available through trybooking.com.

TRAGIC: Cassidy Krygger as Cathy and Simon Finch as Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.
Ceres’ Heights THE WILD and windy Barrabool Hills in winter could just as easily have been the setting for one of the world’s most tragic love stories. The affair between Cathy and Heathcliff will be transported from the rugged, bleak Yorkshire moors when Theatre of the Winged Unicorn presents Wuthering Heights. Adapted directly from Emily Bronte’s novel, the rustic, raw and heart-breaking adaptation would fit perfectly into the Ceres landscape, said director Elaine Mitchell. “Their love story is cruel,
bleak, and wild - no romantic dances and sweet proposals here,” Mitchell declared. “They’re consumed by each other and no-one else can come close to breaking their bond. “But it’s a love story most tragic, most harrowing, most doomed, and the fallout permeates into the next generation of their families. “Heathcliff and Cathy are adopted siblings and best friends, but more than that, they are metaphysically and spiritually bound together.” The production features a cast

of 12, including Simon Finch as Heathcliff, Cassidy Krygger as Cathy Earnshaw, Ben Mitchell as Hindley Earnshaw, Hannah Verspaandonk as Catherine Linton, and Kathryn O’Neill as Nelly, the faithful and long-suffering servant and companion to two generations of tormented Earnshaws. Theatre of the Winged Unicorn will present Wuthering Heights at 8pm on 9, 10, 16, and 23 October and at 5pm on 11, 18 and 24 October at Ceres Temperance Hall, 20 Wheatsheaf St, Ceres. Bookings are available at theatreofthewingedunicorn.com.au.

AS THE excitement builds towards Market Square Shopping Centre’s 30th birthday, we’ve noticed an array of new retailers opening there that would excite any shopaholic. For the fashionistas, the most exciting addition to Market Square is Purple Cow. This Geelong icon has opened its doors opposite Duffs Jewellers with their much-loved guys and girls’ fashion waiting to be snapped up. We recommend visiting Koko Belle with an array of gorgeous handbags and funky luggage. Recently opened in the Moorabool Street entrance of Market Square, you’ll find it next door to the forever popular Good Housekeeping.
Do not fear for those who adore Geelong’s own Venus Flytrap - Hannah has simply moved upstairs to level one and still stocks her vintage fashion, young designer labels and handdesigned jewellery which greatly appeals to those who nurture an artistic flair. Just along from Venus Flytrap, a new clearance store called Urbanizt has opened its doors. With some fabulous bargains, the young label is mostly targeted towards guys, so it’s a good excuse to drag him in for a wardrobe update. With a selection of ladies’ clothing, you might even find yourself something while you’re there. Next door to the delicious Tasty Asia appears Hot Wave a flavoursome Indian cafe that
makes lunchtimes very satisfying. Serving both traditional and modern Indian takeaway cuisine in a spice level for a variety of tastes, we are impressed with their vegetarian range. For those who have yet to visit, Tomi Bar and Restaurant is Geelong’s newest and most exciting restaurant and lounge, open from 6am until late every day of the week. With delightful tapas and meals, there is also a very pleasing range of beverages in a classy venue. For the lovers of fabulous cocktails internationally acclaimed Geelong local Nick Reed impresses customers every Thursday night as a guest expert cocktail designer.

BLOCKED EARS? Don’t like water syringing? FOR CRYSTAL CLEAR HEARING... Gentle, dry ear cleaning by specialist ear nurses
Volunteer Debbie Humphreys, left, with president Pam Virgona.
House of care Pam Virgona said. “Attendees will benefit from the opportunities for greater social participation and connection.” “Our activities co-ordinators Jo Brown and Rosemary Nugent are looking forward to meeting and greeting everyone.” People with dementia or disabilities, ageing members of the community (who may not be as physically able as they once were) and their carers are encouraged to attend. In particular, the program aims to build the social confidence, expand and extend social
connections and experiences, and enhance mental well-being. The two-hour sessions will be in a comfortable and relaxed environment and offer a range of activities and support for participation. Those who attend will be encouraged to assist in planning the program and have their own interests included. There is no cost to attend and afternoon tea will be provided. For more information and to register contact the Gateways Dementia Respite Co-ordinator on 5221 2984. The program runs through to 10 December 2015.
Hear hear for clean clear ears DO YOU remember your mother saying: “Don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear!” We probably all thought: “What an odd thing to say” without really stopping to think about it. It’s amazing how we never forget those old sayings, and how strange, but true they are. Mardi, an ear nurse from Crystal Clear Ears, Geelong, says that ears are lined with sensitive, thin skin, and quietly go about gathering earwax. If you put something smaller than your elbow (like a cotton bud) in there, you are likely to push the whole lot further in, or accidentally scratch the ear. Our ears have wax for a reason. It helps protect our ears from infection. Some people have a natural problem with wax build-up, which is not a sign of failing to clean them well, but a hereditary problem. Ears are designed to naturally push out the wax, but for some people, this just doesn’t work. Hearing aids, ear plugs or using ear buds for music, prevent the wax from coming out naturally. Mardi says it is amazing how often she sees peo-

Where Old fashioned customer service is standard
SCOOTERS Australia in Charles St, Newcomb, is where old-fashioned service is standard for all customers. Licensed dealers Mark and Susan Dillon train their local team with the motto: “It’s not about providing the best scooter to the customer, it’s about providing the scooter that meets the customer’s needs the best”. The trained staff takes the time to listen to the customer’s requests, evaluate the best solutions and provide a range of options that best suit the requirements of the end user - all done with a smile and a distinct lack of “sales pressure”. “We stock Geelong’s largest range of scooters, to provide products to meet everyone’s needs, and budget,” Mark said. “At any time we can have up to 20 to 25 scooters in stock with

Lifesaver skin checks AUSTRALIANS love the sun and every decade of overexposure to UV increases your risk of skin cancer. Statistics show at least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70. Now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to be vigilant in the sun. Leading Geelong plastic surgeon Mr Ian Holten says the sun is the best natural source of vitamin D and it is a balancing act. “A few minutes of mid-morning or mid-afternoon sun exposure provides enough vitamin D. Too much exposure causes sunburn, premature ageing and damage that could lead to melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer,” he says. “Skin cancer and mole checks, talking to an expert about your level of risk and advice on early detection is a good idea.” Mr Holten says over 95 per cent of skin cancers can be successfully treated if detected early. But detection can be difficult, with skin cancers rarely felt and sometimes occurring on parts of the body not usually exposed to the sun, such as between the toes. Not all skin cancers start out as moles, so it is important to have a trained eye look over your skin. “A skin check is easy and simple and takes 20 minutes. It’s just one of those things you need to do.” Mr Holten has trained Australian Skin Face Body’s team of doctors to carry out the checks. “A skin check with an experienced GP will cost
Ian Holten. only $30 after the Medicare rebate and it could save your life,” he says. Located at 50 Western Beach Road, Geelong, the Plastic Surgery, Skin and Laser Clinic has ample parking at the rear. No referral is necessary to see a GP trained in skin cancer checks, simply make an appointment by phoning 5221 8444.

PREVENTION rather than cure is much more than just a slogan at Manifold Podiatry. Dr Simone Leembruggen says the clinic seeks out the cause of any foot-related problems, rather than just treating the symptom. “When people come in we look at the whole person and look at the cause of the issue, looking at why the problem has arisen,” Dr Leembruggen explains. “Then we look at how to prevent it, to enable people to keep doing things they love doing for as long as they can. “We want to inspire people to value their feet. Feet are impor-
tant - what would we do without them?” Dr Leembruggen says education and empowering people to look after feet and prevent problems is the key. “We talk to clients about understanding what a good shoe is, how to fit shoes properly to make sure people are wearing the right shoes for them.” “So often we see people wearing the wrong size footwear.” Dr Leembruggen says that if clients return with a similar problem, the underlying cause has not been resolved. “We fully address the problem
and make sure clients are not continually coming back with painful conditions.” Manifold Podiatry also offers a revolutionary, safe and effective treatment for fungal nails. “The sooner we can treat fungal nails, the better the success rate. If people wait until the fungal infection worsens, it’s a lot harder to treat,” Dr Leembruggen says. Manifold Podiatry also supports Research for CDKL5 disorder. Manifold Podiatry is at 2/84 Shannon Ave, Geelong West, phone 5298 2746.

Rina Glucina’s last medical clinic was in the outback, a six-hour drive on a dirt road from Kalgoorlie. Her vast range of medical experience is now available from her new fully equipped medical clinic in Pakington Street.
From the outback to Pakington St RINA Glucina has spent the last decade solely managing medical clinics for indigenous communities in the most remote places in the outback. Her last outback medical clinic was a six-hour drive on a dirt road from Kalgoorlie. There she dealt with everything, from the simple everyday issues of children and family health, to emergencies such as car roll-overs. After over 40 years of experience spanning every aspect of nursing, from army hospitals,
children’s wards to aged care, Rina has finally realised her dream and has opened up her own fully equipped medical clinic in Pakington St. She welcomes all new patients for medical consultations from Monday to Friday. For those who prefer a holistic approach to their health and wellbeing, the clinic is open on Saturday for holistic health therapy and hot stone massage. Rina offers therapeutic touch, a holistic approach to nursing that she studied during her Masters at Flinders
University. Therapeutic touch is a noninvasive technique, based on the belief that human beings when healthy have a balanced and free flowing energy field which becomes imbalanced and blocked with illness and disease. Therapeutic touch clears negative energy, enabling it to flow and rebalance. For further information about the clinic visit the website at npfamilyclinic.com.

mechanical wear and tear of joints, so usually occurs in older people. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks the joints and can affect people of all ages, including children. Therefore an accurate diagnosis and correct treatment is very important.” The most qualified practitioner to diagnose and treat pain and injury associated with the feet and legs is a podiatrist with expertise in musculoskeletal concerns. Apart from thorough and accurate diagnostics and assessment, an experienced musculoskeletal podiatrist can provide
advice and treatments including specific exercises for strengthening and conditioning feet and legs, general exercise and nutritional advice to assist healing and weight-bearing strain, addressing faulty biomechanics, orthoses prescription, advice on appropriate shoe selection, dry needling and natural regenerative injection therapies such as Prolotherapy and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). FOR those wanting to improve their smiles, dental veneers are a simple option. Veneers are thin coverings that are placed over the front (visible) part of the tooth. They look like natural teeth. Veneers can be used to correct a wide range of dental issues, such as teeth that are stained and cannot be whitened by bleaching, chipped or worn teeth, crooked or misshaped teeth, uneven spaces or a large gap between the upper front teeth. Veneers are made of either porcelain or composite resin material. A dentist will help choose the material that is best for you. Each type of veneer has its own benefits. A porcelain veneer is a thin
shell that is custom-made to fit on the tooth. The benefits of porcelain veneers are that they are strong and long-lasting, they have a naturallooking surface, less tooth enamel needs to be removed than with a crown or cap, and they don’t stain easily. A composite resin veneer is made from a tooth-coloured filling material bonded to the tooth. The benefits of composite resin veneers are that usually less tooth enamel needs to be removed than for crowns or porcelain veneers, they may mean fewer visits to the dentist as sometimes these veneers take just one visit and they are easy to fix if they get damaged. Before you get veneers, consider the following:
• Your teeth and gums must be healthy before you get veneers. Your dentist can treat any disease or decay before your veneers are placed. • Veneers are not always a good choice for patients who clench or grind their teeth. • It is possible for veneers to come loose over time. • Regular dental visits are a must for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. If you decide to go for veneers it may take a few days to get used to the feeling and they can chip or break under pressure so avoid biting fingernails or chewing on hard objects. JOINT pain is most commonly experienced in the feet, toes, ankles and knees. Symptoms can include aching, swelling and stiffness, making standing and other activities painful. Podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh, from one of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal podiatry practices Foot & Leg Pain Clinics, explains why: “There are many causes of joint pain. It can be the result of an injury but could also be a sign of arthritis, of which rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are the most common. “Osteoarthritis is caused by

Lots to ‘like’ for local mums Owner Lora Skracic believes her costumes are a cut above.
Captain Jack Sparrow anyone?
Going out for a bite?
Playing the part sizes, no booking fee and only require a half-value security bond,” she said. “At Queen of Hearts Costume Hire we wash our costumes ourselves after each and every single use. “We also have a website where people can view all our 1000-plus costumes and buy our products. “We have a wonderful friendly team, Lora, Vesna and Jayne, who exude bubbly personalities and will make you feel like one of their own and get you excited about your party.” She said October was often a busy month with plenty of dressup events including Halloween, Oktoberfest, Year 12 celebration day, Geelong Cup and the Melbourne Zombie Shuffle. “We are offering Year 12 stu-
dents $5 off each costume $50 or over for their celebration day. We also offer free bookings plus only a half value security bond.” It’s all part of giving back to the community, something Lora feels strongly about. During September she raised more than $600 through a make-up challenge that saw her dress up in costume every day and then apply her own character make-up. Find Queens of Hearts Costume Hire at 2/29 Milton Street, Bell Park Geelong, phone (03) 5272 2224. They are open Tuesday and Thursday 10am to 5.30pm, Wednesday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 3pm (closed Sunday and Monday) or check them out online at queenofheartscostumehire.com.

THERE’S nothing more enjoyable than dressing up for a party or a special event and with more than 1000 costumes for hire in sizes from XXSmall to Plus, Queen of Hearts Costume Hire can help make that occasion even better. Owner Lora Skracic, who has a degree in fashion design and a long career in retail, says at Queen Of Hearts Costume Hire the focus was firmly on providing high quality, clean costumes that suited everyone’s budget. The business, open four years in February, stocks more than 1000 costumes as well as selling a wide range of accessories including coloured contact lenses, special effect make-up, stockings, facepaints and even eyelashes. “We offer the widest range in

BARWON Tyre and Auto Centre is a business with a heart. And the heart beats long and loud for Camp Quality, creating a better life for kids living with cancer. Owner Graeme McMahon and his team are longtime supporters of Camp Quality, holding a number of fund-raising events for the charity. The gang will be manning the barbecue at Bunnings Waurn Ponds all day on Sunday and would love to see plenty of customers popping in to buy a sausage for lunch. Graeme is also a regular entrant in the annual Camp Quality EsCarpade and this year aims to raise $15,000 as part of the $1.2 million total. This year the EsCarpade runs from 17 to 24 October, from Narrabri heading off to St George and Charleville to Longreach and returns through Emerald and Roma, finishing in Goondiwindi. “It’s a seven-day trek and we cover 6500 kilometres. It’s all in good fun and we do lots of school visits to promote Camp Quality,” Graeme says. “Laughter really is the best medicine and hopefully we spread some cheer along the journey.” It’s become part and parcel of the family owned and operated business that doesn’t just offer quality tyres - there’s also a full range of mechanical repairs available. Barwon Tyre and Auto Centre has a well-earned reputation for personal service, customer care and attention to detail. IndySport Warriors lose place in bite NPL1 after ‘long wait’
On the Chris Pitman
Snapper Browsed
By JOSIP ZILIC AFTER a rollercoaster first year back at the top flight of Victorian football, North Geelong Warriors have lost their bid to stay in NPL1 after going down to a youthful, match-hardened Melbourne Victory. A goal in each half by Callum Goulding and Pierce Waring gave the Victory a 2-0 win - but not without controversy. The Warriors came out with more intent as the first chance of the match fell to Gareth Richards who saw his shot blaze over the top corner. Victory then started to compile a series of midfield combinations to put the Warriors defence under pressure, including an effort by Victory skipper Joey Katebian that was denied by an oncoming Daniel Zilic in goals. Victory earned a corner midway through the first half when the ball was knocked to the back post for Goulding to slot home through the hands of Zilic. With limited opportunity in front goal, the Warriors began to construct their build-up better. A Michael Anderson through-ball for Vito Cichello
RELEGATED: Another chance goes wanting as the Warriors lose their grasp on the top flight of Victorian soccer. Picture: MARK AVELLINO PHOTOGRAPHY looked promising but Lucas Spinella turned the well hit-shot around the post. Anderson was giving opponent Christian Cavallo a hard afternoon, drawing him into rough play that earned a yellow card for the Victory defender. The resulting free kick,
driven square into the box, appeared to be a handball for everyone but the referee. The second half began with more physicality, with the Warriors enjoying the lion’s share of play and forcing the Victory into a counter-attack to protect its lead.
Katebian snuck through on 60 minutes to find Jesse Daley at the far post alone, only to see his chipped shot sail wide. The Warriors piled on the chances in the next 10 minutes, with Nikola Jurkovic forcing a save from his header and then Anderson blasting well over from straight in front to try bringing North Geelong level. The Warriors rued those chances as substitute Pierce Waring sealed North Geelong’s fate on 80 minutes, collecting a long-ball to pass from Michael Grgic and Matt Townley to drive past Zilic for the second and the promotion to NPL. The Warriors can hold their heads high, though, earning a lot of respect from the football community for the way they went about the season. It was unfortunate they had to be the guinea pigs of the system, which forced the Warriors to wait five weeks without competitive football before meeting their fate. Coach Micky Colina was proud of the team’s effort for the match and congratulated Victory on its achievement.
ALLAN Browse ventured out from Limeburner’s Point late last week, anchoring up off the quarries where he set a spread of baits. At 8.30am his rod buckled over with a 6.25kg snapper. A few hours later another rod sprang to life, this time with a 5kg snapper. Other anglers found a steady supply of squid in close off Hermsley Rd, with size-3 jigs the most productive. I trolled deep-diving hard-body lures off Clifton Springs on Saturday afternoon for snapper but instead boated some large flathead to 55cm. St Leonards Pier provided Tommy Ruff on maggots suspended under floats, while the odd squid was taken on jigs. The pier is worth fishing at this time of year for large snapper at night. Queenscliff kept anglers busy with good quantities of squid over at the bight and further around to the mouth of Swan Bay. Anglers fishing the cleaner water caught the most squid.
EARLY: Allan Browse with a snapper. Anglers who again made the effort to fish in 40m to 50m off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads were rewarded with snapper to 6kg on larger baits such as whole squid. The Barwon River estuary’s Sheepwash section produced bream and some surprisingly big whiting to 42cm, with the better quality fish of both species taken on live Bass yabbies. Anglers fishing the lower section of the estuary at night with baits like mullet managed mulloway to 8kg. The western district continued providing worldclass fishing for southern bluefin tuna, with a record 174kg fish reportedly taken on Saturday afternoon out of Port Macdonald. Dave and Alex Haygarth took a run to the Hopkins River early last week in search of bream and estuary perch. Fishing land-based, they banked perch to 40cm on hard-body and soft plastic lures after wading out far enough to reach the drop-off. Chinook salmon really switched on at Lake Bullen Merri, where bait-fishing was the most-effective method. Powerbait rigged on a running sinker rig cast from the bank caught fish to 2.5kg, while anglers fishing from boats around Potter’s Point caught similar size salmon on baits such as pilchard fillets. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir was productive for Azi and Jean Osmic, who landed a 1.5kg rainbow trout on pink Powerbait. Azi also had success a few weeks ago with a brown trout of 2.2kg on a mudeye suspended under a float. Highton’s St Augustine’s Lake was a hotspot for kids chasing the yearling rainbow trout liberated for school holidays. Redfin were also caught by anglers seeking trout with small spinners. Clifton Springs should be worth fishing for snapper over the next week, particularly around any tide change coinciding with dawn or dusk. Freshwater enthusiasts should consider driving to Lake Bullen Merri for its Chinook salmon.
Jan Juc teen in search of back-to-back surf victories JAN Juc teen India Robinson will seek to conitinue her winning form when she takes on some of Australia’s best junior surfers at home this weekend. Robinson will contest the Jan Juc leg of the 2015 Rip Curl Grom Search after winning her first World Surf League Women’s Pro Junior event last month in New South Wales. The 16-year-old will have the advantage of surfing her home break in the second round of the Grom Search series.
Some 100 of Australia’s best 16-and-under surfers are scheduled to compete, with a favourable forecast of one-metre surf, offshore winds and temperatures in the high twenties. Robinson will hope to use the Grom Search as another opportunity to enhance her form before representing Team Australia in an ISA World Junior Championships. Other local surfers set to compete in the Grom Search this weekend include Jan Juc duo Tane
Bowden and Xavier Huxtable and Barwon Heads’ Billy Harrison. Organisers said heat draws and schedules would be posted on surfingvic.com. After Jan Juc the five-event series heads to Western Australia’s Trigg Point, South Australia’s Yorkes Peninsula and Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The first event was run in small surf at Maroubra. Leaders on the national ratings will qualify for a Rip Curl GromSearch National Final at Sydney’s North Narrabeen from 11 to 13 January.
