A SEA of crocheted and knitted daffodils will honour lives lost to cancer at Greater Dandenong Relay for Life. Teams will keep batons moving around Ross Reserve Athletics Track in Noble Park from 3pm on Saturday 10 October until 9am on Sunday 11 October. Dandenong University of the Third Age (U3A) created about 600 daffodils to brighten the event - one for each Greater Dandenong resident diagnosed with cancer. Participants raise money for the Cancer Council and honour those who’ve beaten or are battling the disease as well as those they’ve lost. Visit www.relayforlife.org.au to get involved or sponsor a team.
Copping a spray a two-man takedown to bring him to ground. According to the review, a second male - a friend - is sprayed with capsicum spray after approaching within two metres of the officers. Dandenong magistrate Greg Connellan, who presided over the second teen’s trial in February, was reportedly critical of those actions. “I have to say I have real problems with the deployment of foam to (the second male),” Mr Connellan said, according to ABC TV’s 7.30 program. “There is nothing in his behaviour or body language which justifies him being sprayed.” He acquitted the second teen of charges of assault and hindering police. Mr Georgiou told the Journal that OC spray seemed to be used “indis-
criminately”, “unjustifiably” and “too readily” as the PSO held the second male. PIRT deemed that the officer had acted in line with OC spray training by first trying to “maintain a safe distance” from the second male. According to OC guidelines, the spray should be deployed only in situations of violent or serious physical confrontation, or an imminent threat. In his post-memo, Insp Thompson said it was “arguable” whether the spraying was necessary and proportionate. Insp Thompson noted the need for the officer to cover and assist his partner - who was restraining the fare evader. He described the teen’s friend who “continually challenged a lawful direction” as a “potential threat”.

In a statement, Victoria Police stated the two PSOs were debriefed and received “further development”. In response to the incident, police command had emphasised to PSOs that fare evasion should not be their “primary focus”. It was stated that Victoria Police had since introduced a process to review all CCTV footage of use of force, and audited all railway stations for available water points. Sealable water containers have also been stored at the stations for OC spray after-care. Mr Georgiou says the report showed the need for independent reviews into future incidents. “This is a review conducted internally by the police and it seems to lack objectivity and certainly lacks independence.”

LIBERTY Victoria has slammed a lack of “objectivity” in an internal police review into Protective Services Officers’ use of force and capsicum spray against two 17-year-old boys at Springvale railway station. A redacted version of a report into the 7 June 2014 incident by Victoria Police’s Post Incident Review Team (PIRT) was released on Monday. Liberty Victoria president George Georgiou took issue with the report’s take on officers pouring water from a mop bucket onto the two 17-year-olds’ faces to flush OC spray from their eyes. Mr Georgiou contrasted the aftercare given to one of the PSOs - who suffered OC spray splashback - who was treated with clean water in toilets upstairs.
“No-one has suggested that the (mop) bucket was clean or hygienic before it was used. “To be pouring the contents of a bucket which might have had cleaning solution or fluid in it is not only foolhardy but dangerous in terms of infection.” The “after-care” was described as “adequate” by the PIRT report. In an internal memo also released on Monday, Victoria Police Inspector Darryl Thompson stated in response to the PIRT review that “there is no indication that the contents of the water within the bucket were not clean”. The PIRT review described the PSOs initially chasing a fare evader who fled from the station’s ticketing barriers. The officers removed him from a train parked at the platform and used

Show-off hoon had iron bar in his car By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN APPRENTICE mechanic has pleaded guilty to hooning in front of police after driving up and down Princes Highway, Springvale, with 300 other vehicles for several hours early one morning. Daniel Morgan intentionally lost traction for about 20 metres as he accelerated his vehicle from traffic lights at the corner of Corrigan Road and Princes Highway about 3am on 7 February, a court heard on 28 September. The incident had created noise and smoke in front of about 20 other vehicles at the intersection. Morgan was charged with dangerous driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, displaying false registration plates and not displaying P-plates at the time.
Morgan told police at the time that he didn’t know why he performed the burnout, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Glenn Horman told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. “I f***ed up. It was spur of the moment.” He claimed the false number plates were on the car when he bought it. A month earlier, Morgan was charged with drug-driving after testing positive to methamphetamines. His unregistered black Commodore ute, affixed with stolen number plates, was seen by police on Gladstone Road, Dandenong North, at the time. In November police found a stolen number plate in Morgan’s thenhome garage in Dandenong North. Last year, Morgan was caught
driving three times during a ninemonth suspension. Each time - in Pearcedale, Doveton and Narre Warren - he was driving the same unregistered car with different sets of false number plates. On each occasion, he failed to produce a licence. When he was intercepted in Doveton, a 50-centimetre iron bar was found within Morgan’s reach inside his car. He told police at the time that he had the weapon for safety purposes, the court heard. “There’s a lot of crazy people out there.” Defence lawyer Adrian Dessi told the court that jail was a “real possibility” for Morgan but a community-based order could serve as
punishment and rehabilitation for the accused’s ice issues. He said since the offending, Morgan had moved out of the Dandenong area. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said it would have been no surprise if Morgan had killed someone. Mr Vandersteen particularly noted the accused had been “running amok with ice in the system” and dropping a burnout as part of a group of 300 speeding vehicles. He bailed Morgan to undergo a community corrections order assessment. He indicated the order would comprise of unpaid community work, supervision, drug treatment and a road trauma awareness course. Morgan was also facing the loss of his licence, Mr Vandersteen said.
Crunch time for the best Anzac bikkies By CASEY NEILL THE best Anzac bikkie baker will take home $200 from this year’s Dandenong Show. Art and craft pavilion chairwoman Margaret Weightman said the competition would commemorate the Anzac Centenary. “That’s why we’re doing it, to bring into people’s minds what went on in the First World War,” she said. What makes a winning biscuit? “It’s texture, it’s how they come out in size and that they’re not all over the place,” Ms Weightman said. “It’s a visual thing as well as having a taste. It’s up to the judge - every judge is different of course.” Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL Sub-Branch president John Wells will award the $200 prize at 2pm on Saturday 14 November in the art
and craft pavilion. Mr Wells and his members are gearing up for the annual Poppy Appeal in the lead-up to Remembrance Day on 11 November. From late October, thousands of Poppy Appeal volunteers around the state will be selling the iconic red poppy to raise funds for current and former servicemen and women in need. Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of France and Belgium, and since 1921 they have been used in remembrance of those who fell during times of war. Mr Wells thanked the community for wearing poppies with pride. They’ll be available from Woolworths and Officeworks stores, RSL sub-branches and volunteer collectors.
IN BRIEF Rent cost landlord his life HALLAM woman Kristy Robb bashed her Noble Park landlord to death in his own home, a Supreme Court jury has found. The 28-year-old was on Friday 25 September convicted of the manslaughter of Alan Matthews, 69, on 30 January last year and will return to court for a plea hearing at a later date. The court heard that Robb lived in a bungalow on Mr Matthews’ Henry Street property for about a week earlier that month but hadn’t paid rent, so the landlord held onto some of her belongings when she moved out. Robb broke into the bungalow with boyfriend Gino Rachele, 42, to retrieve the items but Mr Matthews discovered and confronted them. The court heard that Mr Matthews called triple-zero after the intruders fled, said he’d been assaulted, provided Robb’s name and number and described Rachele. Police found Mr Matthews dead in his bathroom a short time later. Rachele was on Thursday 3 September sentenced to a oneyear community corrections order after pleading guilty to one charge of recklessly causing injury and false imprisonment.
Arrest after drugs seized A 41-YEAR-OLD man was arrested this month after police seized heroin, ice and cannabis from a Springvale property. Police raided the Goodwood Drive property on Friday 25 September and arrested the man after they found a kilogram of cannabis, 20 grams of heroin and 10 grams of ice in the house. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Car lost after speeding A MAN has allegedly been caught speeding almost 60 kilometres an hour over the limit in Dandenong in the early hours of Saturday morning. The 20-year-old driver, from Blackburn, was clocked travelling at 139km/h in an 80km zone in a Nissan GTR about 1.15am on Saturday. The car has been impounded and the driver is facing $917 in towing costs. He is expected to be charged on summons with speeding offences.

Chicken makes a crust By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
YOU could call this Springvale South deep-fried chicken finger-lickin’ good. Except with the poultry safely housed in a crispy bread roll, there’s little chance of the spoils dripping on your hands. Tradies are apparently flocking to the Spring Hot Bread bakery for this surprisingly wholesome offering. The cavernous, crusty roll contains an exquisite combo of light, cool salad and deep-fried chicken pieces. What sets it apart are the slices of searing Thai chilli salved with coriander leaves and mayo. Other delicacies at the bakery are steamed pork rolls - popular with farm
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL workers who drop by first thing in the mornings. Also of interest are the pink-battered pork skewers, as well as rolls filled with barbecue pork and hoi sin sauce or ham with chicken-liver pate. Customers also snap up the $4.50 packs of six donuts, and 35-cent bread rolls presented warm and en-masse from the ovens with head-spinning regularity. Anna Nguyen says the roll recipes
had just “evolved” since her mother took on the business 16 years ago. It was the mother’s first venture after leaving her job at a clothes factory that “made T-shirts for K-Mart”. As she established the venture, she, her husband and daughter worked 14hour days including long night-shifts baking from 11.30pm to dawn. “Everyone’s sleeping and we wake up,” Ms Nguyen says. The bakery is among Athol Road’s market-like hub of butchers, fishmongers and vegie sellers, which seems to attract a crowd of food seekers. Spring Hot Bread is at shop 9/160 Athol Road, Springvale South.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 1 October 1915 News and Notes Miss May Rodd of Dandenong collected eight pound two shillings in small sums for the women’s hospital appeal. AN acceptable program was submitted at the Lux Pictures Show, at the Dandenong Town Hall on Saturday night, when there was the usual large attendance. ‘Captured by a Mexican’ proved a most exciting picture story, and ‘The Girl from School’ was a film that kept the audience in a constant state of good humour. Next Saturday’s program is ‘Between Man and Beast; ‘Heart of a Child’ ; ‘Joining the Oceans’; or ‘The Great Panama Canal’. ON Saturday evening a young man
named Visard, who was riding a bicycle past the Dandenong fire station, collided with a milk cart, driven by a resident of Keysborough, named W.S. Foster. The cyclist was bruised about the leg and shoulder, and sustained a severe cut on the cheek. Dr Langley attended to Visard who suffered a good deal of shock. How to make Lemon Pickle PEEL very thinly about six lemons take off the white and cut pulp into slices, taking out the seeds. Put the peel and pulp into a jar, sprinkling between them 2oz bay salt, cover the jar, and let it stand three days, then boil in a quart of vinegar, six cloves, three blades mace, two or three shallots, and 2oz of bruised mustard seed. Pour it boiling over the lemons in the jar, and when cold tie over.
In a month strain and bottle liquor, and the lemons may be eaten as pickle. The above is a useful sauce, especially for veal cutlets and mince of veal. 50 years ago 6 October 1965 Russian migrants are here every 10 days ONE white Russian family is welcomed in Australia every 10 days. Lois, wife of Mr Alan Williams, field officer of the Dandenong Methodist Immigration Committee, told this startling fact to an attentive audience when she was quest speaker at the last monthly meeting of the Dandenong High School Mothers Club. Mrs Williams said that in 1917 during the revolution thousands of White Russians escaped over the border 2000 miles away and took refuge in China. In

After more than 100 suggestions by the Greater Dandenong community for a name, Stockmans Bridge was officially opened on Wednesday. Mayor Jim Memeti said the vital transport connection was on the site of the old Dandenong saleyards. The $29.5 million bridge will connect Cheltenham Road with the Dandenong city centre and will help ensure successful business around Dandenong. - Compiled by the Dandenong and District Historical Society

The proposed name has strong links and relevance to Dandenong’s history and the Grenda Bus Company a third generation Australian family business, started in 1945. It grew from humble beginnings in a bus depot at 9 Foster Street to become a leader in the Australian Bus Industry. Therefore it is considered appropriate this lane is named in its honour.

‘Death squad’ claims By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has told a court that he absconded from his nominated bail address because he was hiding from a murderous Saudi Arabian consortium headed by a man he called “Iranian Ali”. Christopher Pierre appeared in an inperson bail application on 28 September shortly after being arrested at Dandenong Plaza over outstanding arrest warrants. He had been wanted for failing to answer bail and contravening family violence and community corrections orders. Pierre told the court he had moved from a Dandenong boarding house ad-
dress to a Doveton home - without telling police - because he had been “implicated in a homicide”. He claimed that he was “linked in” to a former housemate “Gung Pham” in Doveton who was stabbed and burnt to death five months ago. Homicide Squad detectives had investigated the case but the suspect could not be extradited from Saudi Arabia, Pierre said. “When I was meant to be in court, the people caught up with me. I was hog-tied in a cupboard.” When asked to identify the culprits,
Pierre said: “A person called Iranian Ali.” Pierre said he was “too scared” to report the incident. The court was told Pierre had failed to appear on bail on 1 September - on top of similar previous offences. He also hadn’t reported to police for more than a month, and was in breach of his third community corrections order, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. Since his most recent community order in April, Pierre had not allegedly attended one appointment with Corrections Victoria - not even the induction. On his arrest, he was found with sy-
ringes in his pockets. The applicant had said he was on prescribed methadone and addicted to pain medication, police informant Senior Constable Russell Bratton told the court. “He said something was happening in his life and he had to stay low.” Magistrate Greg Connellan adjourned the application until 7 October to give police time to verify Pierre’s homicide and Iranian Ali claims. “Potentially we may need to also speak to the (police) Homicide Squad.” As for Pierre’s bail, Mr Connellan said: “At the moment, no way.”
Memorial service for Cold War’s warriors A MEMORIAL service in Berwick will honour the men called up to serve their country during desperate times. The National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (Victoria) South-East Sub-Branch in November 2006 erected in Buchanan Park a plaque dedicated to the Nashos who served in the navy, army and air force between 1951 and 1972. In particular, it pays tribute to the 212 who paid the supreme sacrifice during active service in Borneo and Vietnam. The group each year
holds a memorial service at the plaque and the event will this year take place from 10.45am on Sunday 11 October. The one-hour service will include a volley from re-enactment group The Great War Association and a wreath-laying ceremony. The National Servicemen’s Association of Australian represents the 287,000 young men the government called up for service during two conscription schemes. About 227,000 were called up between 1951 and 1959, during the Korean War, and were intended to form the 3rd Australian

Sleeping driver hits truck A MAN who fell asleep at the wheel of his vehicle late one morning and caused a truck to roll over on the Monash Freeway has escaped conviction. A court was told the accused was driving on the freeway in Dandenong about 11am on 13 January when he fell asleep and struck the truck from behind. The victim lost control of their vehicle, which rolled on its side and sustained “substantial damage”, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Glenn Horman told the court. The victim was taken to Dandenong Hospital for observation. The man told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 28 September that he had been working night shifts as a baker at the time but had not felt sleepy and said he had since given up night shifts and was studying. The accused, who had no prior convictions, pleaded guilty to careless driving and was put on a 12-month good-behaviour bond. He was ordered to enrol in a road trauma awareness seminar. “You’re lucky you’re here,” magistrate Jack Vandersteen told the accused. “So too the truck driver.”

THE Dandenong Bypass is on the map. Last week The Journal reported that the road was shown as under construction on Google Maps and Melway online despite opening in December 2012. Keysborough South Action Group called on people to report the issue and on 24 September applauded Google for updating its maps to show the bypass as open. A BLIND Springvale man has settled his differences with a restaurant that refused him entry with his guide dog. Twanny Farrugia said a staff member at Nam Loong in Russell Street, Melbourne, asked him and pooch Val to leave at lunchtime on 16 November last year. Through a Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission hearing, the restaurant’s management “profusely apologised” and agreed to settle the matter.

MORE than 1000 people signed a petition calling for the Easternats to return to Sandown in a bid to combat street hooning and drag racing. Greater Dandenong councillor Jim Memeti tabled the signatures on 28 September but said “as council, we can do nothing” unless Sandown owner Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) applied for a permit to hold the offstreet racing event. He urged council staff to meet with police, MRC and Easternats organisers to discuss further options. Acting CEO Mick Jaensch said he would discuss the possibility when CEO John Bennie returned from leave.

A JUDGE found it hard to reconcile how a hard-working student fitness-trainer could be driving with ice in her system. The 28-year-old student, who was working two jobs, told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that she was also surprised - she had thought she had “only” taken speed at a party three days beforehand. “That’s the problem - you don’t realise what you’re ingesting,” the judge said. “I’m sure you wouldn’t eat something you knew was unhealthy.”
The student was convicted and fined $500. Her licence was cancelled for six months the minimum mandatory period for what was her second drug-drive offence. A DRUG trafficker showed an honest side to police, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. Springvale police had arrested the 19-yearold unlicensed driver after finding two grams of cannabis in his car. At the police station, the man told officers that they had missed some of the stash. On a second search of the car, the officers found a further 10 grams and charged the man with trafficking. LIBERAL Party headquarters has denied involvement in a robocall purporting to deliver a message of a snap, early federal election from “Prime Minister Tony Abbott”. Residents in the south-east Melbourne seat of Isaacs received the recorded message on their phones on Monday night. Its voice-over declared it was the local Liberal candidate Garry Spencer “providing a message from Prime Minister Tony Abbott”. The message closes with: “Vote for me and the Liberals in the next federal election, which is likely to be called in the next few weeks.” Liberal state director Simon Frost said there had been no robocalls made into Isaacs by Mr Spencer this week, and said the call’s voice bore no resemblance to Mr Spencer. Peace push By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FAITH leaders are playing a pivotal role in tackling family violence. A number of these leaders, councillors and activists gathered at the Dandenong Council Chambers last Wednesday to launch the Family Violence Prevention Resource kit - the culmination of the Challenge Family Violence project. The challenge project is a three-year partnership between Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong councils, with funding currently scheduled to finish at the end of 2015. The resource kit, entitled ‘Promoting Equality and Respect: An interfaith collaboration on preventing family violence’, includes fact sheets, faith perspectives, legal service, support contact numbers, and more. It was funded by the Department of Justice and Regulation and supported by Monash Health and the three councils. Joining Dandenong mayor Sean O’Reilly and Dandenong Interfaith development officer Helen Heath to talk to guests at the launch were a number of influential faith leaders including Father Jean Mawal from the Antiochian Orthodox Church of St Paul’s, Jasbir Singh Suropada from the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria, Suleyman Sahingoz from the Emir Sultan Mosque in Dandenong, Jacqueline Russell from the Brahma Kumaris Centre for Spiritual Learning, and Sheiny New from the Jew-

cluding the ‘faith perspectives’ section in the resource kit. “We invited the community faith and spiritual leaders who have contributed to this project to provide some references to religious texts or particular values that underpin their faith tradition,” she said. “And we’ve included them to show how particular faith traditions promote gender equality and promote respect towards women.” Ms Heath paid tribute to the community elders and volunteers for refusing to bury their heads in the sand in the face of such a confronting issue. Veterans look north By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS COME Remembrance Day this year, a group of three veterans plan to mark their respects at the northern-most tip of Australia. Shane Dixon, Mathew Keene and Chris May - all members of the group Young Veterans - by that stage would have stopped at 30 towns between Wilson’s Promontory and Cape York in six weeks. They would have spoken at schools, groups and RSL branches to spread awareness on the often-overlooked plight of the young, modern veteran. “Kids are often shocked to know me and (brother) Scott are veterans of the war,” Mr May said. “They picture veterans as old guys with jackets.” Most of Australia’s returned veterans are now in their mid-twenties to thirties. Some return with disabilities, mental health issues and some simply struggle to cope with “fitting in” to civilian home life.
Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL general manager Greg Betros meets Young Veterans Scott May, Shane Dixon, Chris May and Mathew Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Keene. 145098 Young Veterans has been the conduit for many of them, making initial contact via social media. It has helped many newly-returned servicepeople - and anyone who put
on “the uniform” - to get help, counselling and housing. On weekends, the group organised camping trips to stir some veterans “out of the woodwork”.
On 1 October, just prior to embarking on its 40-day cross-country odyssey, the group made a brief visit to Dandenong RSL - its major sponsor who donated three ex-military Land Rovers to the cause. General manager Greg Betros said the group had “opened our eyes” to what young veterans endured. “We’re happy to support them. We think it’s more than beneficial.” Chris May remembers spending his 20th birthday in a rocket shelter in Afghanistan after his party was “rocketed”. He and his companions shared a birthday fruitcake cooked by his mother and lit with 20 candles. “I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” he says now of that experience. Such treats like that cake also “mean the world” to our servicepeople, Mr May says. Soberingly, he returned home after being wounded when his armoured vehicle drove over a roadside bomb. To keep up to date with the trek, follow the Young Veterans site on Facebook.

CRACKDOWNS on family violence and bail breaches have caused crime figures to skyrocket in Greater Dandenong. The Crime Statistics Agency on Thursday 1 October released crime statistics for Victoria for the year ending 30 June. In Greater Dandenong, order breaches jumped 67 per cent to 2752 offences, up from 1644 the previous 12 months. Greater Dandenong police Inspec-
tor Bruce Kitchen said the offenders involved breached intervention orders issued to protect family violence victims and bail orders. “The bail orders particularly relate to youth offenders,” he said. “We’re concentrating a lot more on those breaches. That’s a state-wide that action.” Insp Kitchen said Dandenong Magistrates’ Court’s location within his jurisdiction pushed up the numbers, which also cover escaping custody and resisting arrest. “There’s a lot around PSOs at the
railway station,” he said. Total crime in Greater Dandenong increased 6.6 per cent on the previous 12 months, from 13,642 offences to 14,538. The state-wide average increase was 4.6 per cent. After order breaches, the Police Service Area’s (PSA) top five offences included theft (4790 offences), burglary (1587), assault (1579) and property damage (1274). Insp Kitchen said thefts of and from motor vehicles remained “a real issue for us”. “A lot of it is about people leaving
valuables in their cars, number plates being taken off vehicles and vehicles being left unlocked,” he said. “We’ve sent the message out - I’ve lost count how many times - but a lot of people aren’t listening.” He said Greater Dandenong averaged 28 thefts from cars each week and about 13 thefts of cars. “My main concern is assaults. They’re tracking at 20 a week, excluding family violence,” he said. “It’s more important to me to be more concerned about issues that affect the individuals.

Train death findings By CASEY NEILL A CORONER’S findings into a Dandenong North woman’s death will help families to better support mentally ill loved ones. Coroner John Olle on 24 September delivered his finding into Elaine Elizabeth Sykes’ suicide by train. The 58-year-old walked onto railway tracks between the Chandler Road level crossing and Noble Park Railway Station, about 7.30am on 10 November 2011. He recommended that clinicians discharging a psychiatric patient - that they expected family members to help care for - should provide a document stating who to contact with any concerns and what support services were available.
Ms Sykes was admitted to Dandenong Hospital on 25 August 2011 after her mental and physical health deteriorated over the course of four months. Consultant psychiatrist Dr Llina Tzolova told the coroner that during treatment Ms Sykes’ health improved and she “consistently denied suicidal thoughts” and “expressed hope for the future”. In October, treating clinicians discussed discharge options with Ms Sykes and her son Dean. “Dean expressed concerns that his mother would be unable to care for herself at home, and that he felt she was suicidal,” Coroner Olle said. She was discharged on 2 November and Dean was to stay with her for a few days.
“The decision to discharge appears reasonable and appropriate,” the coroner said. He heard that Ms Sykes was offered a stay in step-down unit PARCS or temporary supported residential services (SRS) accommodation but declined. She also refused referrals to Eastern Region Mental Health Services (ERMHS). Dean stayed with her until 6 November. “He reported that when Ms Sykes was at home she was really confused, agitated and unsure about a lot of things,” the coroner said. “Dr Tzolova acknowledged at inquest that after hearing Dean’s evidence he may not have understood everything about the diagnosis and what
treating clinicians were trying to do, and stated that maybe if it was written down it would help.” Dr Tozolova also gave evidence that treating clinicians decided Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (CATT) involvement was not required because Dean would be better placed to judge any decline in his mother’s health. “I find that referral to CATT would have been appropriate in the circumstances, given Dean’s concerns about his ability to care for his mother and her capability to survive in her home,” Judge Olle said. “CATT clinicians are very experienced in assessing patients post-discharge and identifying if there are any concerns that need to be monitored or addressed by treating clinicians.”
Police honour the fallen SPRINGVALE Botanical Cemetery honoured Victoria’s fallen police officers with a moving service. The End of Day Reflection was part of National Police Remembrance Day on Tuesday 29 September. Since Victoria Police was established in 1853, 159 officers have been killed in the line of duty. Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said their memories would live on forever. “We are well aware of the dangers our members face,” he said. “Yet every day, more than 13,000 police and 1100 protective services officers put on their uniforms and come to work to protect those around them.” Senior Police Chaplain Reverend Dr John Broughton conducted
the service at the cemetery’s Police Memorial, which features a plaque commemorating each officer who died performing their duties. Guests laid 13 wreaths and speakers included Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) CEO Jane Grover and Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton. Ms Grover described the service as an opportunity to “recognise the enormous debt we as a community owe the men and women of Victoria Police, who risk their well-being each and every day to keep our streets and neighbourhoods safe”. The lowering of the Police Flag to half-mast while the Last Post played, a minute’s silence and the raising of the flag concluded the service.

More help for ice afflicted families By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

FAMILIES affected by ice use need more help, according to Hotham MP Clare O’Neil. According to her submission to the National Ice Taskforce, Ms O’Neil stated local experts agreed there was huge stigma and a “significant” lack of support services for relatives of ice users. There was also a particularly critical shortage of rehab for teens, she stated. Ms O’Neil also submitted for better protection for emergency services workers and a recognition that the ice ‘scourge’ is part of a broader drug problem. Her response was formulated at a July community forum in Springvale, with a panel of experts including Victoria Police’s Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius, clinicians, ambulance workers and a teen-rehab manager. The forum heard that two per cent of Australians consumed ice and that its use was most common among 20 to 29-year-old men. In 2013-'14, ice use in metro Melbourne rose by more than 80 per cent. In that period, paramedics were at the wrong end of 314 threats or assaults from ice-affected patients.

We have over 48 staff. We speak more than 10 different languages. We will guide you to owning your first home, your ideal family home. And we will guide you in the best way to invest in the current real estate market!
LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY INVESTMENTS? We are 1 principal owner of 6 offices in the franchise network of over 700 offices The Property Management team at our 6 offices are known for being highly organised and highly adaptable. All three managers have over 15 years of experience in the real estate industry. The team is hardworking conscientious, pride themselves on the level of care and attention to all tasks. Undertaking stringent tenant selection, the team is responsible and efficient; LJ Hooker team ensures that the portfolio runs as smoothly as possible.
Chris, Roeun and Robert Testimonial The approach at LJ Hooker Glen Waverley is completely different and extremely refreshing. LJ Hooker has handled my properties for a long time and they are by far the best property managers I have ever worked with. They understand the market as well as the needs of both owner and tenant. They found several tenants for my properties and on all occasions I have been extremely happy with the tenants and also the level of service. When there have been maintenance issues, the property manager has found quality, professional tradesmen and no job has required re-work. On one occasion when the tenant caused the maintenance issue, they worked with them to resolve the problem. Having lived interstate for the past 12 months I could completely relax about my properties, knowing LJ Hooker Glen Waverley would look after them. I would not hesitate to recommend the LJ Hooker Property Managers Roeun, Chris and Robert to anyone who is seeking a managing agent. Yours sincerely, Chris and Jennifer Anderson
They understand that property is a major investment; their client needs to feel their property is in safe hands and that it will be managed meticulously.
We are pleased to introduce our Property Management team of our 6 offices:

I like to get in and advise on ways to maximise space and declutter properties. Why do you choose to market your properties in the local newspaper and online? The very best exposure and ultimately the very best price is achieved for my clients. I believe in the coverage. Marketing is the tool used to attract buyers, after that, that’s where my job comes in to negotiate a premium price for the vendor. I need the tools in order to do what I am paid to do. In this world of digital space, I still believe there is a form for real estate newspaper advertisements.

KEYSBOROUGH 8/104 CHURCH ROAD YOU MAKE ME FEEL BRAND NEW Designed as a 3 bedroom home, the owners had a wall removed (which could easily be reinstated) to provide a superb upstairs living area to compliment the main living/dining downstairs. An oversize single garage plus parking apron and a euro-style laundry complete this level. Upstairs are 2 excellent bedrooms, the main offering a large, private en-suite and a walk-in robe. All this just seconds from Eastlink, Parkmore and all wanted facilities. Now, buy this and live the lifestyle you’ve earnt.

Dino delights THE Drum Theatre has been invaded by dinosaurs and crafty bits and pieces over the school holidays. Kindergarten and primary school children could take their pick from an array of ribbons, bows, sparkles and cardboard to create their favourite prehistoric creature. Participants in the 90-minute dino-craftit workshop could also take a look at the fullsize triceratops and velociraptor that landed in the Drum Theatre foyer.

Kumon gives vital edge FOR many nine-year-olds, the summer will be spent at the beach or going away on holiday. Theo will be doing all that as well as taking 20 minutes each day to ensure he goes back to school full of confidence. Theo has been studying the fundamentals of maths and English at Kumon for just over a year and can now confidently solve Year 6 fraction problems
and comprehend texts like Treasure Island. “When I go back to school, I won’t have anything to worry about, Theo said. Kumon students learn at their own pace so they can practise topics they find challenging or progress to study advanced work. “I feel like Kumon gets me somewhere because I know it will make high school easier for me. I’m
three quarters of the way through Year 6 maths and I want to get up to half way through Year 8 maths by the end of the year, Theo said. Theo’s progress has impressed his teachers as well as his mum, Mary. “He’s definitely on top of things at school. His teachers were surprised by his English because he wasn’t much of a reader, which worried me, but he’s

good with that now too, Mary said. Mary said the support Kumon gave Theo had helped him muster more confidence. “You have that oneon-one positive feedback which makes Kumon a positive learning experience and that’s what Theo needed. It’s a very nurturing environment, she said. Contact your local Kumon instructor for further details.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Cabcharge buys taxis By GEORGIA WESTGARTH PAYMENT technology company, Cabcharge, has expanded with the purchase of Dandenong Taxis Limited. The leading electronic payment system for taxis in Australia announced the acquisition of Dandenong Taxis' 105 cabs on Friday 25 September after the agreement was
first negotiated in January this year. Originally Aerial Taxis, Dandenong Taxis has been servicing the south east of Melbourne since 1954 and Cabcharge managing director, Andrew Skelton, said the attainment was a chance to put more cabs on the road. “The purchase is in keeping with our network’s strategy to increase fleet size and establish a national
operating plan that will lift the standard of services for both passengers and drivers,” Mr Skelton said. Servicing Melbourne’s south east growth corridor, Mr Skelton added that with a strong population growth in the region “investments in public transport have struggled to keep up”. “The area Dandenong Taxis serves is well-placed to benefit from
potential infrastructure investments, such as reinvigoration of the Port of Hastings and the opportunity for an additional airport as set out in the long-term Urban Growth Zone Plans,” he said. Cabcharge has ensured business will continue as usual for Dandenong Taxis drivers and passengers and manager of 24 years Paul Smith said he would stay on in his role.
Disability doesn’t have to be a job barrier By CASEY NEILL EMPLOYEES are using their disabilities to their advantage at EDMI in Dandenong. Operations manager Cameron Bower last year took on five workers through DVJS in Cranbourne to cover extra work. The three who remain are going from strength to strength. Dion from Doveton has vision problems, but Mr Bower said that heightened his sense of touch and made him perfect for a role checking crucial parts. Scott from Hampton Park has autism and works in the packing area with meticulous consistency. “It’s exactly what I want,” Mr Bower said. “Since he started packing I have not had one issue.” David from Kooweerup is deaf and works in the spray painting booth. “That’s no issue for me - all of my employees have to wear hearing protection anyway,” Mr Bower said. EDMI repairs domestic and industrial gas meters and assembles and tests meters and regulators. “Our core business is repairing gas meters and supply of new for the domestic market,” he said. The company has been in Dandenong for 15-plus years, previously as Atlas Measurement. Mr Bower came on as operations manager in 2010, and said smart meters could see the business grow in the near future.
By all accounts, they’re a top choice A DANDENONG-BASED accountant is officially a favourite for investors. RJ Sanderson and Associates was recognised as the Best Accounting Practice in Victoria in the Investors Choice Awards. Voting was open to any investor who’d used a professional to support the purchase of a property. They scored them on their level of support, professionalism and value for money. “Being recognised with an Investors Choice Award is the ultimate accolade in a profession where trust is essential and results are expected,” the awards organisers said.
Grand final holiday comes at a cost By CASEY NEILL EDMI's Cameron Bower and Willie Alefaio from DVJS. 144551 “In the UK, we’ve won part of a tender for 20 million gas meters over about five years. That’s all government-legislated,” he said. “Unless government legislation changes here, it’s not going to be something that’s on a mass roll-out.” Mr Bower had avoided “body shops” in the past, but found DVJS consulted with workers and workplaces to find the right fit for both.
“You’re not stuck with that person trying to make it work when really, it’s in both party’s interests if you separate,” he said. The DVJS service is free and includes government rebates, training and post-placement support. Mr Bower now works with DVJS employment executive Willie Alefaio to conduct pre-placement trials to assess workers’ skills.
Picture: ROB CAREW “It gives us the confidence to be able to put them forward,” Mr Alefaio said. DVJS, formerly Dandenong Valley Job Support, has been helping people with disabilities to access employment since 1993. The company also has offices in Narre Warren, Pakenham and Dandenong.
Group makes sure careers are on track By CASEY NEILL RAIL young guns are sharing their skills to grow interest in the industry. Bombardier Transportation Australia (BTA) Dandenong employees Nhan Tran and Abhishant Pursawalkam helped to establish the Young Transport Professionals (YTP) Network in October last year. YTP now has more than 200 members from 30 different organisations and last month held a tour at Bombardier. “We felt that there was a need for an organisation willing to help the development of young rail professionals to step forward and take on the challenge,” Nhan said. “We all agreed that, sadly, there is a general lack of advertising for the rail industry and information about careers in rail. “Students need to know what a great industry this is to work in. “YTP aims to bridge this gap and spread this message. “This will in turn attract young talent.” Nhan said the industry would also benefit from cross-organisational communication.

BUSINESSES are calling for this year’s Grand Final Eve public holiday to be a one-off holiday. Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) chief executive Mark Stone said it could cost $543 million to pay Victoria’s almost 2 million full-time employees to stay home. “This waste strikes at the heart of efforts to improve the competitiveness of Victorian business and grow jobs,” he said. “I’ve spoken to many owners of businesses of all sizes ... and to date no-one feels this holiday is a good idea. “Businesses throughout Victoria have contacted VECCI asking us to see if we can have this decision retracted. “We’ll continue to campaign on their behalf to see these holidays are not repeated in years to come.” The push followed Dandenong Retail Traders Association (DRTA) chairwoman Glenys Cooper telling the Journal that the holiday would put strain on small businesses. “Some businesses might decide that it’s not worth opening,” she said. Greater Dandenong councillor Peter Brown said the “economic impacts on Greater Dandenong businesses are unaffordable and unjustified”.

Kinder turns 40
DANDENONG businesswomen supported families in crisis with a networking night. The Maurice Blackburn’s Women’s Network on Wednesday 30 September hosted Dandenong Unites at Ginger Jones in Dandenong. The focus was on homelessness and domestic violence and the guest speaker was Dione Healey from Launch Housing, formerly known as Hanover. Attendees donated backpacks, books and thongs for Launch Housing to distribute to people in need. The organisation’s deputy CEO Heather Holst said thongs were a very practical donation for those in need of a shower. “There’s a public shower that’s at our service in Dandenong - I think it might be the only public shower in Dandenong,” she said. Ms Holst said the books were important for children who often carried only the bare essentials. “It’s really important for children to have access to books and for their parents to read to them as well,” she said.

Memeti heads for the top By JARROD POTTER “IT’S pretty amazing for me because I started my career off at Dandy and I never thought that I would ever play for the Australian team ... and now I’m playing.” With an almighty header, Australian under-16s defender Mersim Memeti helped Australia qualify for the 2016 under-16 AFC Championship (Asian Cup) in India. Memeti, 15, from Dandenong, got to fulfil a childhood dream of representing Australia when he donned number four in the green and gold and took the field in the Asian Cup qualifiers in Vietnam earlier this month. It was an impressive tournament performance from the Joeys, knocking over Guam and Myanmar in earlier group clashes before facing the host nation to seal its place in the next tournament on the international junior soccer calendar. With a home-field advantage and knowing the local weather inside and out, the Vietnamese had the upper hand heading into the must-win Group J clash. But not even a sweltering day in Hanoi - with the mercury skyrocketing over 35 and the humidity levels of a tropical forest - could halt Australia’s charge and especially its Dandenong defensive specialist. In the back-and-forth must-win clash against Vietnam, the match was turned on its head in the first half as Memeti found space at the far post from a well-weighted corner and his header across the goals beat the keeper. Memeti’s first-half goal would be the only score in the clash as Australia booked its spot atop the group following the 1-0 victory. “We had to win the game against Vietnam - if we didn’t win Vietnam would have gone through instead of
us,” Memeti said. “The game was pretty good, but we didn’t play that well it was pretty hot, very humid, but at the end of the game we still won 1-0 and that’s all that matters. “Scored a header; it was very good scoring for the country.” It’s been a whirlwind couple of months for the young defender, playing in two international soccer tournaments - the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-16 Youth Championships in Cambodia and recently the AFC Under-16 Championships. “It’s been really good - it’s been a great experience for me and the team,” Memeti said. “The AFC was good - thing was only a friendly tournament - then the AFC qualifications we qualified for the Asian Cup in India in 2016.” Memeti now set his sights on the Asian Cup in 2016 - hoping to emulate the success of the Socceroos earlier this year - with the bigger goal in mind: a top-four finish to help Australia qualify for the under-17 World Cup. The Dandenong Thunder alumnus gets to rest up for a few weeks before his next local assignment - playing for Melbourne City NYL where he hopes to get a few minutes on-field in the eight-round season, despite being one of the youngest players in the squad. Capping off the amazing year so far for Memeti was making his senior debut for Melbourne City - in a midweek friendly against North Geelong earlier this year. “Was good to play with the first team players and a good experience to play with the older boys,” Memeti said. He wanted to thank his family and friends, Melbourne City and Dandenong Thunder for their support.

Trackside thinking takes on a global focus NOW that the AFL season is over, all thoughts turn to the track. Melbourne is the focus of world racing with the opening of the 2015 Caulfield Cup Carnival on Saturday 10 October, which starts the greatest thoroughbred racing festival in the world. The Melbourne Racing Club bookends the overall carnival, opening with Caulfield Guineas Day on 10 October and concluding at Sandown Park on 14 November with the Sandown Spring Carnival Race Day featuring the Zipping Classic, Sandown Guineas, Eclipse Stakes and Sandown Cup. International interest is growing, especially after ‘the visitors’ won all three majors last year, proving the carnival is truly a world event - Admire Rakti (Japan) at Caulfield, Adelaide (Ireland) at Moonee Valley and Protectionist (Germany) at Flemington. After winning the Caulfield Cup last year, the Japanese were the first to arrive this spring with Fame Game and Hokko Brave landing on 19 September.
SPRING FEVER WITH
ROY ASPINALL
A week later another 10 internationals arrived from Europe and another 15 are due to land this Saturday. It’s shaping up to be the strongest invasion yet. Fame Game is regarded as better than any previous Japanese visitor and at his last start in May finished second to Japanese superstar Gold Ship in the Tenno Sho at Kyoto. Among the second group of September arrivals is the evergreen nine-year-old Red Cadeaux. Having already run second three times (2011, 2013 and 2014) he’s back for his fifth try at the Melbourne Cup. He’s joined by stable mate and Ascot
Gold Cup winner Trip to Paris. On the same flight were Melbourne Cup secondfavourite Max Dynamite and Caulfield and Melbourne Cup top-weight Snow Sky. All have reportedly settled in well at the Werribee quarantine centre. A super day of racing at Caulfield on Saturday will feature four Group 1s, two Group 2s and two Group 3s plus two listed events - a real feast of racing. Heading the meeting is the 135th running of the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600 metres). First run in 1881, the Caulfield Guineas is traditionally one of the most exciting events of the spring as it brings together the nation’s best three-year-olds over a competitive distance. Many trainers consider it to be the nation’s major event for three-year-olds and victory ensures a big future as a stallion. It is an intriguing event this year, with an even group of Victorians and the likely favourite coming from Sydney in Stan Fox Stakes winner Press Statement. He’s from the powerful Chris Waller
stable and has won four of six starts with one second. The Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400 metres) at Caulfield on 26 September threw up several local chances - Bon Aurum, prepared by Ciaron Maher, was impressive beating Tulsa and New Zealander Dal Cielo both had eye-catching runs. Ready For Victory began badly and was never a real chance but is much better than that. Interestingly 10 of the last 15 Caulfield Guineas winners have come from that event. The Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600 metres) became part of the day last year and adds greatly to the meeting. The South Australian-trained Miss Gunpowder impressed, winning the Prelude on 26 September and Payroll, Jameka, Stay With Me and Pasadena Girl all look chances. In a day of great racing on Saturday there is also the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000 metres) and the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600 metres).

By JARROD POTTER BACK-TO-BACK WNBL preseason hit-outs over the weekend showed plenty of promise for a newlook Dandenong Rangers. Dandenong showed that despite losing 2014/’15 star trio Penny Taylor, Cappie Pondexter and Kathleen Macleod, there’s plenty to be excited about coming from Stud Road. Coached at the WNBL level for the first time by former Rangers’ player Larissa Anderson, Dandenong put its doubters back in their place with emphatic victories over Adelaide and Bendigo. After drawing with the Perth Lynx (formerly West Coast Waves) in their first practice clash last week, the Rangers had no such issues running out victorious in the last fortnight of its pre-season. Dandenong rested two starters Aimie Clydesdale and up-and-coming centre Alex Bunton - on Saturday against Adelaide to give plenty of opportunity to a sea of familiar faces. The Rangers’ depth starred in the 105-71 triumph, in particular their returning champion Jacinta Kennedy. The Rangers’ centre showed she’s not just a force at SEABL level as she has smashed through her first WNBL pre-season in 10 years - terrorising opposition under the ring with her impressive wingspan and
Dandenong centre Jacinta Kennedy powers through the key as her return to the WNBL took another great step forward. 144872 deadeye shooting outside the key. Back-up point guard Amelia Todhunter relished extended time at point alongside nimble guards Tenaya Phillips (Narre Warren South) and Bree Whatman (Beaconsfield), with the trio showcasing a bit of the potential Dandy speed set to blow sides off the park. Australian Opal Sara Blicavs ensured the Lightning would not have it any easier on the wings, with
the WNBL champion picking up at Dandenong where she last left off in 2012/’13. Anderson said the Rangers needed to show more defensively. “I don’t think there’s any issue with scoring, our focus will be defensively,” Anderson said. “That’s exactly what practice matches are for- we’ve got a lot of work to do and we’re no different to any other team - that we wished
we had a few more weeks together to iron out the creases, but it is what it is. “Compared from game one to now, we’ve made a massive improvement ... and for us it’s just a matter of getting used to each other and getting it all done.” Anderson was impressed by the side’s bench stocks - which will allow Dandenong to play up-tempo ball getting players in and out rapidly. Dandenong backed up its Saturday rampage by blitzing the Bendigo Spirit 88-65 at Traralgon in its second last pre-season clash. Holding the Spirit to only 11 points in the second term, the Rangers launched into their high-speed offence once more to unleash another superb scoring performance. Blicavs (19 points, seven rebounds, six assists) was sensational across the court while Phillips (14 points, five assists) impressed once more and Alex Bunton (eight points, nine rebounds) showed her might under the ring from only 14 minutes court-time. Dandenong heads away to face Melbourne Boomers on Thursday in its last practice match before its WNBL season opener against the University of Canberra Capitals away on 10 October before the Rangers’ first home match on Friday 16 October against South East Queensland.
No holiday here for first round of the season By JARROD POTTER CRICKET returned to Greater Dandenong this week with Victorian Premier Cricket and the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA) spending the extra public holiday knocking in the first round of the season. Dandenong faced newly inaugurated rivals Kingston-Hawthorn - the merged club that could have been Dandenong-Hawthorn if the Hawks didn’t withdraw from the Cricket Victoriaapproved union at the last minute. But the Panthers haven’t let the failed merger halt their pre-season campaign, re-signing Darren Pattinson to give another front-line seam option to skipper Tom Donnell. The Panthers attack has
its hot spots in a year, but will look to new faces to guide its spin brigade with Tanner Stanton and Jack Worrell set to get some serious overs unless Dandenong can find a UK import at short notice. The ins list is headed by Greenvale’s Alex Kerr and Prahran all-rounder Michael Nyary alongside Pattinson. Panthers coach Ross Woodall earlier this year said the side was desperate to return to the top eight and try to make an impact on the competition. “It’s critical that our first grade team gets back to a position to play finals - we haven’t been able to do that recently - and landing Darren Pattinson is a massive in for us, in what he brings to us on game day and also his leadership,” Woodall said. “There may be a bit more
Darren Pattinson will be back for Dandenong this Victorian Premier Cricket season. 95014 feeling to it (match against Kingston-Hawthorn), but since it’s a game of cricket, we just have to make sure by the end of that weekend we have the four points in the bank and we’re starting the season the way we want to.” Leaving the Panthers first XI group are Nathan Lambden (Casey-South
Melbourne), Matt Willcocks (Northcote) and the skipper Dan Doran - who has returned to the Gold Coast for work reasons. Endeavour Hills has seen a mass exodus of its best and brightest including Victorian representative Zach Allen (St Kilda), young wicketkeeper Ben Swift (Dande-
nong) and spinner Shane Peake (Ashburton Young Cricketers) and last season’s skipper Chris Pereira (Hallam Kalora Park). The Eagles faced Box Hill in the first of a two-dayer at home. Noble Park will look to bounce back from its early exit after losing a qualifying final to Ormond. Under new coach Luke Wintle, the Bulls are set to pick up where they left off earlier this year. The Bulls faced Plenty Valley away on Friday. Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club will begin their season against Box Hill at home on 10 October.
