Pigger y’s red tape By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE future of the Happy Valley free range pig farm in Wandin North has again been cast in doubt after council rejected the permit to change their feeding processes. The farm submitted a request to council that would bring them into line with the planning scheme that currently classifies the piggery as an intensive farm. “We are looking to grow foraging crops to bring the nutritional levels of the property up,” farm owner Jo Stritch said. “That way we wouldn’t need to bring as much feed in from outside and we could then be considered an extensive farm.” Yarra Ranges council has rejected their request for a permit based on the advice of a farm nutrition expert that did not believe the Stritches could grow the appropriate level of nutritional food on the farm. “Council has rejected it on the hearsay of the expert, but this person has never seen the property and never seen the pigs, which is disappointing,” Mrs Stritch said. Mrs Stritch and her husband Andrew feel the council has not considered their proposal thoroughly enough. In a letter sent to the pig farm, Yarra Ranges Council stated it was not satisfied the submission would make land use lawful under the scheme as the pigs
could not survive on foraging crops alone. Mrs Stritch pointed out that the crops would provide a majority of the pig’s nutrition and not the entire diet. “I believe the pigs can get more nutrition from the property if we grew more crops,” Mrs Strich said. “We grow Italian rye grass already, and if we introduced other mixes we could produce 55 per cent of the pig’s diet from the property.” Mr Stritch said the couple felt they had been knocked back at every turn despite doing everything they could to comply with the planning scheme. “The food we are bringing in is grown, not manufactured,” he said. “But now we are told we can’t grow it ourselves, it’s has to been grown somewhere, so why can’t we do it?” The couple say they have had enough of trying to fight the regulations and are considering their options for the future. “Our only options are to continue to pursue council for foraging crops or to relocate.” Mr Stritch said. Clive Larkman, Chairman of Agribusiness Yarra Valley said the pig farm had been unfairly targeted in this matter. “This decision has come from people who are not qualified to make that decision,” he said. “I feel they are being unfairly targeted and it’s wrong.”

Green grows the garden of hope Warburton’s Melissa Ho and Suyin Chan are two happy planters, after their project for a Yarra Valley Food Network website received a community grant from the Yarra Ranges Council last month. The YVFN website received a $3000 grant from the council through its community development grants as part of its 2016 Grants for Community Program, sharing in a total of $322,232 with 56 other projects. The website, which will be auspiced by the Koha Community Cafe, will allow users to share information about food and produce they have available and will allow for a buy, swap or sell for that food. FREE mental health events are being held today (Tuesday) and tomorrow at the Healesville Library for Mental Health Week, and residents are invited to stop by to sing, move and have a cup of tea. To mark Mental Health Week, Sunday 4 - Saturday 10 October, the library is holding events on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 October to promote better health. Manager, Sharon Waller said the events begin with a demonstration of the Ageless Grace Fitness program, run by Healesville’s Leah Marlowe, at 10am on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Leah will return to the library for a performance with the Rocky Road Choir in the Library from 1.30pm. Ms Waller says at 2pm, visitors will be able to have a cup of tea, before Mind Australia ambassador, Dave Alexander, will speak on his personal mental health experiences. Following Mr Alexander’s talk, a Q&A session will be held for those with questions about mental health and mental illness. Ms Waller said having events such as Mr Alexander’s talk helped to break down the stigma of mental health, which
can often go unspoken of. “It should be really good, Ms Waller said. “With Dave, who’s an ambassador and who has suffered from mental illness, talking about himself is a really good thing - it makes people realise that it’s not unusual, it’s common. Throughout Mental Health Week, the library will also have a display of books about mental health for members to read and borrow. All of the events at the Healesville Library are free, though bookings are essential. For more information and to book, call 9800 6497.

700 sign pool petition By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS AN online petition to save the Warburton Outdoor Swimming Pool has gained over 700 signatures from supporters over the last week. The pool was closed in November 2008 due to significant leaks and structural defects, according to Yarra Ranges council’s director Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis. The Warburton pool fell into disrepair after the Yarra Junction
Aquatic Centre opened in 2005, which, Mr Varmalis said, had since been providing swimming facilities for the Upper Yarra community. One of the concerns raised by the author of the petition is that people turn to the river for swimming since the pool has been closed. Life Saving Victoria states in their annual drowning report that from 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2014, 47 per cent of drowning deaths occurred in inland waterways.
Furthermore, The Royal Life Saving Drowning Report for 2015 placed the Yarra River as number three in the top 10 river drowning black spots. However, in the same report from Life Saving Victoria, the upper section of the Yarra River that runs through Warburton has been identified as a low risk area for drowning. Life Saving Victoria also identified the most common locations for non-fatal drowning in 2013/2014
was in swimming pools (38 per cent) with public pools making up 32 per cent of that figure. The future of the Warburton Outdoor Swimming Pool is unknown at this stage, but Mr Varmalis said there were plans to rejuvenate the area. “Council is currently consulting with the community on future plans for the Recreation Precinct where the pool is located, adjacent to the Warburton Caravan Park,” he said.
Briefly Ram-raid ATM burglary POLICE are appealing for witnesses after last Tuesday’s ram-raid burglary of an ATM from a Yarra Glen service station. At 3.50am on Tuesday 29 September, a Nissan Patrol four-wheel-drive reversed through the glass doors of the United Petroleum service station. Police believe that an ATM was then hooked onto the four-wheel-drive, which then drove away, taking the machine with it. Victoria Police put out a call for witnesses on Thursday 1 October, after receiving more information about the burglary. Police believe a B-Double truck was travelling behind the Nissan Patrol, which had sparks coming from it, along the Healesville-Yarra Glen Road. The truck was towing a short trailer behind the cab and a long trailer behind, with faded green coloured sides. A Victoria Police spokesperson said the truck was not believed to have been involved in the burglary, but that police would like to speak to the driver. Debris of the ATM was found scattered throughout Bell Street, Yarra Glen, and Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson estimated that the burglary caused between $8000 - $10,000 to the service station. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Special tribute to Walker families THE 2015 Timber Memorial Service will be held at the Heritage Pioneers Chapel in Woori Yallock to commemorate those in the timber industry who have lost their lives. The service will begin at 11am on Saturday 17 October, and will be a time to reflect, remember and pay tribute to the men and women from the timber industry who are no longer with the community. This year, the service will pay special tribute to the Walker families of the Yarra Valley and Marysville, among others who were integral to the timber industry in the area. The Heritage Pioneers Chapel was built to care for families in the Yarra Valley affected by
the loss of a loved one in their line of work. It was dedicated to the timber workers of Victoria as a place of honour to the industry and to ensure the memories of those hard, risky days are not forgotten by the workers. The memorial service has steadily grown in numbers since its inception in 2009, with truck drivers, log carters, sawmillers, fallers and all who have contributed to the timber industry remembered. The chapel includes a huge red gum log stump that stands as the lectern in the chapel. The red gum trunk from the Barmah forest in northern Victoria is over six feet wide and was dedicated to the memory of Keith ‘Bones’ Poynton, who was killed in a logging accident at Mount Beauty in 2006.
Families who would like to have relatives remembered at this year's service are asked to submit photos and information to form an honour roll of workers. To include a loved one’s memories in the forthcomingTimber Memorial Service, photos, stories and memorabilia must be submitted by 9 October. They can be dropped (by appointment) to the Heritage Pioneers Chapel at 1414 HealesvilleKooweerup Road, Woori Yallock, or emailed to Leonie Lang on info@heritagefunerals.com.au. Ensure all information is clearly marked with the name of the person to be remembered and contact details for return of photos. For further information, call Leonie Lang on 5964 6500.

A MAN has been taken to Maroondah Hospital for mental health treatment after abusing staff members and customers this morning at Healesville’s Coles supermarket. Coles employee and Mail journalist Jodie Symonds said about 6.10am on Wednesday 30 September, a man approached her counter at the supermarket before swearing at and abusing staff members. Ms Symonds said the man made accusations at staff that they had not given him his groceries the night beforehand, and became angry when asked to come back to the store later to speak to a manager. She said the man then left, before returning with a coffee and yelling at customers walking in, one of whom told Ms Symonds that they felt unsafe and asked for police to be called. Ms Symonds said the same man allegedly followed another member of staff at the supermarket before 5am - the staff member ran to their car and drove to a staff entrance. Healesville police attended the incident, and Senior Constable Kirsty Swankie said the man, a 41-year-old who was not from Healesville, had been suffering from mental health issues. “He has been taken down to Maroondah Hospital, where he’s getting treatment,” Sen Const Swankie said. He is expected to front Ringwood Magistrates’ Court in February 2016.

Apprentices getting their just rewards TWO weeks ago, I was pleased to host my annual Casey Apprentice/ Trainee of the Year awards, which is now in its sixth year. Our panel of judges, chaired by Phil Munday of Phil Munday’s Panel Works, had the very difficult task of deciding the finalists and, ultimately, the winners. Congratulations again to Mount Evelyn’s Elizabeth Lilburn of Red Earth Flowers, our young apprentice of the year, and Launching Place’s Adrian George of Elecorp, our mature age apprentice of the year. It was great to see the winners and finalists receive some welldeserved recognition on the night, which was again reflected in the articles in last week’s Mail.

serve and the Aqueduct Trail. I was invited by Launching Place Primary School to inspect their new car park, which will provide parents and teachers with more parking spaces, as well as a safer pick-up and drop-off zone. It was also great to visit the Mount Evelyn Football Netball Club to check out the newly completed changerooms for the netballers, which will now provide the players with their own long overdue facility. CCTV security cameras are now officially up and running in Lilydale and Yarra Junction, which will reduce crime and prevent anti-social behaviour. And there is more to come.

School turns 140 in style By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS WARBURTON Primary School is celebrating 140 years of education this year and is seeking input from past students, teachers and families to help with the celebrations. The primary school was opened on 2 March 1875 and the school’s history, present and future will be celebrated at its annual Springfest event, to be held this year on Saturday 31 October. After a difficult beginning in a challenging landscape, the school experienced various locations and incarnations until it settled on a very steep hill site on Dammans Road in 1907. A new campus was opened on the present site on Horners Road in 1953, with the two campuses offering primary and secondary education. This was the case until the Upper Yarra High School (now secondary
college) opened in Yarra Junction on 25 March 1962. The Dammans Road schoolhouse was destroyed by fire in February 1959, after which the school remained permanently on Horners Road. The school’s slogan, ‘Small School - Big Heart’, reflects its purpose of providing an environment that allows its students to thrive, in their learning and through their relationships with each other. School principal Damian Marley is encouraging former students and staff to join the current school community for a big 140th celebration at Springfest. “We are lucky to have such a beautiful school is such beautiful surroundings,” he said. “There’s a big history to celebrate, but we also want to celebrate the great

teaching and learning that is happening at our school, and the bright future ahead of us.” The celebratory event will be held from 10am to 4pm at the schoolhouse on Horners Road in Warburton. Any past students, staff and friends of the school that want to be part of the celebrations and stallholders for market stalls held on the day, please contact the school on 5966 2010.

More cash for the community in $300,000 boost By JESSE GRAHAM COMMUNITY groups around the Yarra Ranges will share in more than $300,000 in grants for projects, events and festivals, after funding was approved at last week’s council meeting. The grants, to be given out under the council’s 2016 Grants for Community Program, were approved unanimously by councillors at a meeting on Tuesday, 22 September. Some 57 projects across the municipality will share in $322,232 in grants funding, separated into three streams - Arts and Heritage Development Grants, Festivals and Events Grants and Community Development Grants. Festivals and events such as the Mount Evelyn Street Party, the War-
Melissa Ho and Suyin Chan in the Warburton community garden. The pair will be part of the Yarra Valley Food Network website. 144757 Picture: ROB CAREW burton Film Festival and Healesville Mini Film Festival and Selby Fest were all funded, with $10,000, $3000, and $8000 respectively. An Arts and Heritage grant worth
$10,000 was given to Wandoon Estate Aboriginal Corporation for its project, Coranderrk and Healesville; Shared Stories, and another $10,000 grant was allocated for Coldstream Voice for its project The New Coldstream Story Culture Shift through the science of Narrative Influence. Community Development grants were given out to Dandenong Ranges Community Cafe ($7500), for a Men’s Health Community Forum with the Rotary Club of Monbulk and District ($4000) and for the Yarra Valley Food Network’s new website ($3000). The website, according to an application form supplied to the Mail, is to develop a website which includes an interactive map and trading platform,
for residents to access local and seasonal food. The form states that users will be able to share information about food and produce they have available, and will allow for a buy, swap or sell to take place. The project will be auspiced by the Koha Community Cafe with Suyin Chan, the founder of the cafe. The motion to accept the grants was moved by Lyster Ward Councillor Mike Clarke and seconded by O’Shannassy Ward Councillor Jim Child. Cr Child said this year’s round of grants was the best he had seen in his time on council. “It’s a wonderful outcome,” he said.
“We’ve got some unique community groups out there doing some fantastic work - whether it be arts events, festivals or assisting in community projects, I think they need all the assistance they can get.” The council officer’s report for the meeting stated that $587,223 across 85 projects had been requested by applicants, though only 57 were accepted by an independent panel for each stream of funding. A grants celebration event will be held at Mooroolbark Community Centre on 12 October, for the successful applicants - the report said the event will also showcase successful projects from the past. Letters Dunn is done IN THE corporation known as the Yarra Ranges Shire, some councillors believe they have the right to take our money through the rates system to continue unsustainable programs that benefit very few. Fiscal responsibility seems to be a foreign idea at council and interlopers, such as Samantha Dunn, need to go away. Dunn is done here. Ms Dunn, who believes she can worm her way back to persuade council to continue a wasteful day care program, must be met with fierce opposition from each and every councillor, especially Cr McAllister who unwisely supported the floundering program 15 months ago. Councillors need to be mindful of the financial pressures on all families in the shire and keep their eyes on the Australian debt clock. Total government debt sits about $707 billion while household debt is even worse at about $1640 trillion. Together, those figures add up to an average household debt of about $250,000. Yet the majority in council, and Ms Dunn, don’t see this massive debt as a problem and believe they can hike rates to benefit a few while putting the squeeze even further on everyone.
No, you can’t. Council no longer means ‘rates, roads and rubbish’ but waste, waste and more waste. It’s time ratepayers took a stand and demanded council stops wasting our money. Cait Hoogenbosch, Chum Creek.
Quarter-pipe artwork MCKENZIE Reserve skate park in Yarra Glen needs a new coat of paint this summer, replacing all the faded murals painted in 2013 by a council-commissioned street artist, Jordy Bridge. Public space artwork never remains static and skaters of every age and background will appreciate something fresh. A new design for 2016 will give the next generation its own sense of belonging and ownership of each piece. The best way to discourage unwanted tags and overspray is to apply a protective coating over the original surface and immediately fix any damage that appears using a Yarra Ranges Council graffiti removal kit. The front page photo and large headline (‘Copping a spray’, Mountain Views Mail, 15 September) gave someone heaps of notoriety,
exactly what community leader Mike Baimbridge says he does not want. Have community leaders and the new owners of the former maternal welfare site resolved how to deal with all the graffiti tourists and shoppers encounter every day inside the breezy toilets behind the old toy library? Wasp plan loses sting PREVIOUSLY in the local papers, I read an article about a new aggressive way to tackle European Wasps. I saw my two-year-old granddaughter stung by a wasp, so I was very enthusiastic the Yarra Ranges Shire would do something positive to combat this menace. As I have read nothing further, I phoned the shire to inquire about the progress of this treatment, only to be told the matter had been passed on to the State Government. So, this issue will probably be lost forever in the system. What about the children? Ray Rolando, Seville.
Truckin’ into town So it seems regular Mail cartoonist Danny Zemp is embracing the enhanced competition in Healesville. Will the supermarket chain’s arrival be good for the locals? Let us know. Email editor@mailnewsgroup.com.au.

Birthday Celebrations MR and Mrs J. Northey, of ‘Redlands’, West Healesville, gave a delightful party in the Chum Creek School on Saturday night to celebrate the 21st birthday of their daughter, Loise. In addition to dancing and games, the guests were entertained with vocal numbers by Mr and Mrs Woods, Mr Lamb and Miss Sylvia Fymin. Mr R. Woods, on behalf of local residents presented Miss Loise Northey with a handbag and wished her many happy returns on the day. Council Report THE site of the burnt down house at the corner of Crescent Road and Station Street Yarra Junction was cleared and tidied. Mr Thomas inspected the drive at the Upper Yarra Bush Nursing Hospital and estimated that complete repairs to the drive, including a threefeet widening of the first 300 feet would cost about 200 pounds. East Riding Election MR W.J. Ellis won the East Riding election by 137 votes. Mr Ellis missed winning on a clear majority by only two votes. Mr Orm Singer polled 489 votes, Mr R. Wilson, 120 votes and Mr Ellis 606 but he only needed 608 to win. Death of Bert Burgess ONE of the oldest and best-known residents in the Warburton district died at Warburton Hospital on Tuesday.
Herbert Thomas (Bert) Burgess who arrived in Australia at the age of six and settled in the Warburton district shortly after his marriage, is part of the history of this area since the turn of the century. After working with his father in Queensland on the first steel processing business in Australia he moved to Western Australia and was occupied with gold mining. It was here he met and married Hilda Hilditch, a member of an Upper Yarra pioneering family. Shortly after they moved to East Warburton and with their family have lived there for the last 50 years. Mr. Burgess worked on the construction of the first dam in the Warburton area - the O’Shannassy. - Contributed by Ellena Biggs

French’s Laundry has a proud history in the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges dating back to the early 1920’s when the workers on the Maroondah Dam asked Mrs Rackor to do their washing. For most of its’ 90 plus year history, French’s was owned by the related Rackor, French and Hort families. French’s in 1922 was a simple service, washing clothes for the men working on the construction of the Maroondah Dam. Dina Rackor and her daughter Wilma used a copper and a trough on the back verandah of their home. As more and more work came in they bought a commercial washing machine and a spinner and built a new construction. Healesville became the Mecca for Holiday makers, and this generated a higher demand for French’s Laundry. Ervine French from Deniliquin married Wilma Rackor and together they grew a thriving business that took pride in servicing local customers as it does today. Ervine retired in 1964. Beril French and Jack took over the business and sold it 1988. French’s under went several changes in ownership until the business tragically burnt to the ground in July 2012. Although the business name changed from Rackor, to the Continental in the early years, it will always be known to the locals as French’s Laundry. An iconic Healesville and surrounding area institution. It was this longevity and local history that attracted Rob and Ashley to purchase French’s Laundry. Rob and Ash have firm ideals about the type of business they wanted to buy, these included, a business that COULD NOT BE BOUGHT by an overseas company, providing a quality service to Hotel’s and B&B’s, a business with Family and community connections, a business that creates local employment (Kate and Jason are both local Healesvillians), plus a business that had stood the test of time French’s ticked all the boxes. Since taking over Frenchs Rob and Ash are working with and supporting SIGN FOR LIFE and employ hearing impaired duo Marissa and Gordon in the laundry. French’s Laundry also works with ALKIRA, who assist Down Syndrome adults to find meaningful paid work. Another and welcome community service, French’s donated 300 clean towels, 60 woolly blankets and 25 comfy pillows, to the City Salvation Army, so that homeless people did not go cold throughout this chilly winter. After the fire French’s Laundry relocated to London Drive in Bayswater, but with daily deliveries to the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges, sees itself very much a part of the local community. This historic 90 year old business services many local accommodation, food and beverage businesses in the across entire Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges. Rob and Ashely are building a future based on high quality products, old fashioned customer service and true family values.

CLARENCE FLOWERS AND FANCY GOODS Clarence Flowers was purchased by Kerrie Courtney early this year and she loves the idea of carrying on the family tradition within the ‘Hort Family’. Alyson Galletti (Hort) owned a florist between 1995 – 2007 and family friends owned Bron Bron Janga for several years. “Our gorgeous Aunty Dorothy used to sing ‘Somebody Loves You’ while helping Alison deliver flowers”. I’m sure today I would be chased off the property if I was to continue with that tradition”. “We’re incredibly fortunate in the Yarra Valley with having the choice of selecting fresh flowers from local growers, which are stored and displayed on the farmhouse table as you walk in to Clarence”. The burst of colour and fragrance lure passersby into the shop where Kerrie and her hand picked floristry team Annabelle, Dayne & Kylie will assist with bouquet designs and styling ideas with season flowers for weddings, events, christenings, birthdays, funerals, corporate installations or just because. Kerrie and her team get so excited with the change of each season, when they have the opportunity to create and design fresh ideas for the unique ‘Clarence Style’ arrangements. “Kylie comes to work via the bush where she goes hunting for unusual foliage, I just love her style!” The artfully arranged window display changes monthly to reflect seasonal flowers & décor. Kerrie grew up in a nursery where her love for flowers & plants started. “Mr Sykes had a show room where he displayed indoor plants in the most exquisite planter pots, his styling was superb, he was so ahead of his time. I love creating those ideas with flowers & have recently introduced indoor plants and I’m currently sourcing a gorgeous range of planter pots”.

Power loss By JESSE GRAHAM WHILE many may have enjoyed the sunshine over the long weekend, Lilydale RSL has been left fuming after its solar power was cut off by a thief. On Friday, 18 September, Lilydale RSL members came to their building on Anderson Street in Lilydale, only to find that their solar inverters had been stolen right off of the wall. RSL President, Don Parsons told the Mail that it looked like the thieves had come in with bolt cutters to take away the inverters, valued at about $3000. “They’ve come along with bolt cutters, thrown the isolat-
ing switches, cut them off of the wall and taken them,” he said. “They obviously knew what they were doing and knew what they wanted.” Mr Parsons said the theft had been damaging for the club, which gets its revenue mainly through donations. “I think it’s pretty poor when they start stealing from the bloody RSL,” he said. “What sort of morals have people got when they steal from an RSL organisation in our centenary year? “They’re just low-lives.” He said the inverters ran the building’s heating, and would
have to be replaced for the solar panels to power the building. Police were notified of the theft, and Lilydale Police Acting Sergeant, David Johnson, said officers were investigating the theft. “Generally, the inverters are the cheap part of the system,” Act Sgt Johnson said. “(But) you can’t use the panels without the inverter.” Anyone with information on the theft, or who saw any suspicious activity on the night of Thursday, 17 September, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Mobile donations move off By JESSE GRAHAM THE Red Cross’s mobile blood donation service will no longer be visiting Healesville, finishing up with a final round of donations later this month. The Australian Red Cross Blood Service announced last week that its mobile donor centre would make one final visit to Healesville’s Senior Citizens Centre on Green Street from 19-21 October, before leaving town for good. A Blood Service spokesperson said the mobile service, which visited the town regularly for the last 13 years, is being wound back due to less demand for red blood cell donations from hospitals. “Currently, Australia’s demand for plasma is at an all-time high, while demand for red cells derived from whole blood donations - continues
to fall,” the spokesperson said in a written statement. “Medicinal science keeps finding new ways to use plasma products, leading to this increase in demand, and we need to adjust what we collect to meet this growing need.” “We hope our donors will understand this change is a reflection of shifting demand, as hospitals change the way they use blood products to treat patients.” The mobile service will continue to visit Lilydale on a quarterly basis and the Blood Service spokesperson said residents could also donate at the Ringwood Donor Centre. State Donor Services Manager Maureen Bower said that over the last 13 years, enough blood
had been donated through the Healesville service to be used with 27,000 patients. Millgrove resident Jackie Murphy, who receives blood transfusions every 28 days for primary immunodeficiency, said some regular donors would be saddened by the decision to no longer visit Healesville. “It will be harder for people who come from Marysville and other places,” she said. However, Ms Murphy said she hoped passionate donors would make the trip to Lilydale or Ringwood to donate regularly. “A lot of people are really passionate, because it does save lives,” Ms Murphy said. “It really is needed by other Australians - if there are three of you in your household, one
member of your family is going to need blood one day, and yet one in 30 donates blood. She says she often meets blood donors who are moved by her story, and by meeting one of the many recipients for the blood donations. “Someone, years ago, said to me ‘I feel this is one of the few good things I can do in my life, and that’s why I donate’,” Ms Murphy said. “Every 28 days, I get a second chance at life. “You’re grateful to get a second chance at life ... I do every 28 days.” The Blood Service spokesperson said donors would be notified of the change to the Healesville service. For more information, or to book a time to donate blood, visit don8blood.com/1L7Z3yd.
New animal area just for fun By JESSE GRAHAM
The centre is named after long-time volunteer, Marg Wellington, who Ms Boland said helps out in rain, hail, or shine. “She was a little embarrassed to start with, but it’s very appropriately named - she really has been such a dedicated volunteer for the dogs in that time,” Ms Boland said. “It doesn’t matter what the weather is, she’ll be here and she’ll do what she can in the conditions, even if it’s just spending time with them in their pen, giving them a cuddle.” Ms Boland said the shelter was “pretty full” after having more animals handed in over the winter period, and that the beginning of spring was a busy time for animals being surrendered by their owners. “Coming out of winter is usually a much higher rate of surrenders, and we don’t know if that’s just the Christmas presents that have grown up now, or whether it’s all the mud,” she said.
“Obviously, there are always times where it is the best option, because the situation they’re in is not in their best interest, or working for anybody, including the animal - we can try and work out what’s going wrong and support people through that.” Heading towards the Christmas season, Ms Boland urged people to consider adoption before buying from a breeder or store, when looking for a pet, and to put as much thought into getting an animal as they would for having a baby. “That’s what you’re doing, you’re adding a new member to your family, and you need to have a suitable environment and the time to put into training - particularly with dogs - no matter what age you acquire them at,“ she said. “There are so many animals in shelters all over the country that are perfectly deserving of love and affection, and if you’re someone who can give that to them, why not come in and
Daisy tries some of the equipment at the Wellington Centre with Kate Picture: ROB CAREW Fisher. 144419 have a look?” While Ms Boland said Animal Aid was not a no-kill shelter, she said staff would “try every option for every individual", and that euthanasing animals
was always a last resort. For more information on the Wellington Centre, classes for animals, or adopting, call Animal Aid on 9739 0300.

ABANDONED animals will have a new place to play at Animal Aid, with a new centre set-up at the Coldstream shelter - and residents can come along with their pets to try out the training grounds. On Friday, 11 September, Coldstream’s Animal Aid opened its Wellington Centre - an area where dogs can be exercised and trained on the property. Animal Aid representative Debra Boland said the centre, a concrete fenced-in area with training and exercise equipment, will “enrich” the lives of animals at the shelter. “It’s fully decked out with agility equipment, so they can do some training,” she said. She said it will also provide a meeting point in times of emergency, and an area where people can attend obedience and agility lessons for their own animals.

Fireys want fresh blood By JESSE GRAHAM CFA stations around the Yarra Valley are looking for new recruits, as the season of open days continues and the bushfire season draws nearer. Crews around the valley will be opening their doors over the coming months to recruit new members, answer community questions and raise awareness of fire safety. Following Badger Creek CFA’s Open Day on 13 September, Healesville’s brigade will hold its own event on Saturday, 31 October, from 9am-4pm. Fire appliance displays, police displays, fire season preparation information and children’s events will all feature at the Healesville event, and Captain Graeme Bates said the brigade was looking for 20 new volunteer firefighters, to add to its crew of 50. Capt Bates said that, with a large number of firefighters working full-time, community members able to lend a hand during the day were being encouraged to sign up. “Any stay-at-home mums, dads, whatever - shift workers, that’s the type of people we really need,” he said. “Because the community leaves Healesville, so people that are around weird hours, it’s really good for the brigade.” Capt Bates said the brigade was also looking for new members in the Chum Creek area, as the Healesville brigade also covered that area. Badger Creek CFA Captain Josh Martin said his brigade would also welcome new members, with 22 volunteers currently on the team. “For anyone that’s community-minded, and wants to give something back to the
community, it’s a brilliant opportunity to make life-long friends, and go through experiences, and see the places of the country not everybody can,” Capt Martin said. “As a volunteer brigade, you can never have enough (members) - and I think it’s paramount that we’re very team-minded here.” Capt Martin said that volunteers wouldn’t have to fight fires, but could lend a hand with brigade support or administration. “Don’t feel like you have to join the fire brigade to be a firefighter,” he said. Those that are looking to pick up a hose undertake a six-month, nationally-accredited training program, which Capt Bates said would enable them to go out to incidents next year. “If they sign up now, they won’t be ready until after the fire season,” Capt Bates said. “(But) we’ll get them ready for the next one.” Both Capt Bates and Capt Martin said people aged 16 and over were welcome to sign up. To sign up to the Healesville CFA, visit the station at 62 Crowley Road in Healesville on Sundays after 10am, or Thursday evenings after 7.30pm. To sign up for the Badger Creek CFA, visit the station at 360 Badger Creek Road on Sundays from 9am-10am and on the first, second and third Thursday of the month from 7.30pm. Coldstream CFA will be holding its Open Day from 10am-2pm on 15 November at 670 Maroondah Highway, Coldstream. Yarra Glen’s Open Day from 9am-12pm on 21 November at Yarra Glen IGA.

Jackie thrilled to join dynamic team HEALESVILLE Living and Learning Centre would like to welcome Jackie Warren as their new Vocational, Education and Training Manager. Jackie brings with her over a decade of experience in the community house and adult education sector as both a co-ordinator and a trainer. “I’m thrilled to be part of the dynamic team at the centre and I look forward to adding my skills and experience to the great work being done there, Jackie said. One of Jackie’s first tasks has been to put together a program of activities for term four. “Because of the time of year, I have put together a number of short courses that have a focus on skills for employment that address the needs of many of the local industries, she said. “Fundamental skills for the entry level jobs in the tourism, hospitality and retail businesses; as well as a number of introductory ‘taster’ style courses for those interested in certificate courses in 2016. “The idea being is that you can see if you’re a good fit or not for the career you’re commencing. “I’m more than happy to speak with anyone who would like some guidance in how to choose the right course for them, now or for next year. “For all those people, young and old, school leavers or mature aged, now is the time to enrol for next year. “Our classes have limited num-
bers to ensure you have the best learning experience; so first in, best dressed, as they say. Pre-enrolment interviews are commencing in November, so call now to book your time. The centre is also a place where people can make friends and enjoy recreational activities. Cherie Schultz is the Community Engagement Officer and responsible for organising the health and fitness, art and craft and after school programs. Cherie had to think hard about what were her favourite picks for term four. “I think it’s hard to choose between the Lego Club for kids, the Brewer’s Workshops; or the Healthy, Wealthy and Wise group that formed after our Arabian Nights event, she said. “All have something really fun about them, which appeals to me. When asked which program was her favourite, chief executive officer, Karen Kisala had to think twice. “I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the Youth Reconnections Program which gives disengaged young people a second chance to complete their education, she said. “After all, that’s what we’re all about - second chances. If you would like to explore your learning options, don’t put it off any longer. Call today on 5962 5982 and have a chat with the friendly, helpful staff at your local centre.

A long look at liquor licences By JESSE GRAHAM EILDON MP Cindy McLeish took to the streets in the valley recently, visiting licensed venues to hear the concerns of owners, with a Shadow Cabinet colleague in tow. Ms McLeish and Shadow Minister for Liquor Licensing and Gaming, Russell Northe, visited venues across the Yarra Valley on Wednesday, 9 September. The pair stopped in at the Healesville RSL, the Terminus Hotel and the Fluid Lounge in Healesville and Launching Place’s Home Hotel to hear opinions from business owners about what did and did not work with current liquor and gaming laws. During a meeting with Fluid Lounge owner, Garry Christie, Mr Northe said the visit was both to gather information to put to the current government, as well as to develop the Coalition’s policies for the next election. “We’re in opposition at the moment, so my job is to work with liquor and gaming venues and work out what improvements we can make to the current arrangements that are in place, with the ultimate view of developing policy so we can have good outcomes - not just for pubs and clubs and venues, but also making sure we give regard to the community at the same time,” Mr Northe said. He said both he and Ms McLeish had heard about “challenges” for venues, in regards to applications for liquor and gaming licensing, and

At the end of last year, the council approved a permit for Fluid Lounge to extend its opening hours to 3am on Fridays and Saturdays - ending a two-year dispute on the matter that went to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) twice. Mr Northe said he welcomed the government’s announcement last month of a review of the Gaming Machine Arrangements framework, which will determine machine entitlements in the future. A venue currently must have an entitlement for each gaming machine it operates, and current entitlements will expire in 2022 - the review will report back to the government by July 2016.
Shire make-up may not change at all By JESSE GRAHAM THE ELECTORAL make-up of the Yarra Ranges Council may stay largely the same following a Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) review, but residents still have time to have their say. The VEC released its preliminary report into its review of the Yarra Ranges Council’s electoral make-up on Wednesday, 30 September, putting forward three options for the council’s future. The review, which takes place after three elections, will assess the amount of councillors and wards in the municipality, to determine what changes, if any, should be made for next year’s council election to achieve fair voter representation. The VEC’s “preferred option” in the report is to maintain the current nine councillor, nine ward system in the Yarra Ranges, with modified boundaries to even out voter numbers. This option, Option A, moves the Lyster Ward boundary to Ferny Creek, brings the border of Walling and Streeton Wards to Canterbury Road and moves part of the boundary between Chandler and Billanook Wards to Olinda Creek - 4491 voters will be moved to different wards under this option. However, this preferred option comes despite half of the public submissions in the first stage of the review recommending a change to three large wards for the Yarra Valley, Dandenong Ranges and urban area of the council, with three councillors elected from each ward. This option was slated as an alternative, Option B, in the report. The VEC stated in the report that its preference in the review was for “minimal change if there are no special circumstances to warrant major changes”. It said that the nine councillor, nine
ward system gives the “positive features” of councillors with specific knowledge of their ward, with an easier to understand voting system. Option B, however, would result in less splitting of municipalities by ward boundaries, and would “arguably” improve “fair and equitable representation” by having three councillors to represent a range of interests in larger wards. Option C offers a slight adaption to Option B, with nine councillors elected from one four-councillor ward, one three-councillor ward and one twocouncillor ward. With this option, four councillors would be selected from a central ward that takes in urban areas around Chirnside Park and stretches through Mount Evelyn, Seville, Silvan and Wandin North, while two councillors would be elected from the Yarra Valley and three would be elected from the Dandenong Ranges. The report can be viewed by visiting www.vec.vic.gov.au, and public submissions can be made up until 5pm on Wednesday, 28 October. Submissions can be made online, by emailing yarraranges.review@vec. vic.gov.au, by post to Victorian Electoral Commission, Level 11, 530 Collins Street, Melbourne, VIC, 3000, or by faxing to 03 9629 8632, and must include a full name, address and contact phone number. A public hearing will be held at 7pm on Thursday, 5 November at the Yarra Ranges Council offices at 15 Anderson Street, Lilydale - submitters can indicate on their form if they wish to speak at this meeting. The Yarra Ranges Council was contacted for comment, but did not respond by deadline.

Rated M and MA15+ respectively Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and Denis Villeneuve WE’RE doubling up this week, covering Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario and M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit (you’ll see why). The Visit is The Sixth Sense director Shyamalan’s attempt to restore his reputation after a long string of failures, and this low-budget horror film about two kids staying over with their estranged, increasingly creepy grandparents is a modest success. The performances are en-
gaging, the film has some amusing self-aware humour about film-making technique, and maintains an intensely eerie atmosphere. The main problem with The Visit is that Shyamalan doesn’t pace his clues properly, in that some of the most disturbing moments happen too early, and you’re likely to figure out the big twist (something Shyamalan once had a gift for) rather quickly. But overall, quite a decent horror movie. But Sicario is a far better horror film without even trying to be. This taut, expertly-directed thriller follows Kate Macer
(Emily Blunt), an elite SWAT agent taking part in a crackdown on a Columbian drug cartel. With its unrelentingly grim tone, stark violence and confronting depictions of the extreme corruption on both sides of the war on drugs, Sicario feels like a horror movie grounded in very real conflicts. On top of that, the characters are riveting and multi-faceted, and Roger Deacon’s cinematography is stunning. The Visit is a fairly scary diversion, but Sicario ranks among the year’s best thrillers and horrors. - Seth Hynes

Time to sing again - and again! WITH two very successful years behind it, the third Massed People’s Choir and Orchestra event in Warburton is shaping up to be as big and enjoyable as • ever. If you love to sing or play sacred music, you are invited to join with hundreds of others and a large orchestra on Saturday, 17 October, at the Warburton Seventh-day Adventist Church. Church spokesperson, Mrs Sue Marshall, said the theme this year centred on the wellknown hymns of Charles and John Wesley, and Isaac Watts. “These men are considered to be among the greatest hymnwriters of all ages,“ she said. “Their hymns are truly the heritage of the Christian church, and are still known and loved by many.“ Music director, Nyarne Darko-Harrison, will again lead the large orchestra in music which has enriched the lives and worship of countless Christians over the past 200 years, and hopes the event will attract young people as well. Once again, the Massed People’s Choir and Orchestra is a fund-raiser for the Redwood Community Centre in Warburton, which is jointly sponsored by the Warburton SDA church and the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA Australia). The Redwood Community Centre is a vibrant assistance hub for many in the Upper Yarra Valley.
The programs are created to assist people of all ages who need encouragement and support from time to time. This year the Redwood Community Centre has been offering: • A youth drop-in program; • Redwood Kids’ Resilience program; • Low-cost fitness classes; • Free cooking classes; • Health education programs; • Art classes; • Food parcels; • Second bite free fruit and vegetable distribution; • Agency referrals and advice; • The Lounge Room; • Youth mentoring; • Free meals; • Women’s support group; • Friday night soup; • Employment services; • Homelessness support; and • Holiday activities for school children. Mrs Marshall said, “The Massed People’s Choir and Orchestra event is open to all and free of charge, but people do need to register (see advertisement for details). “And by making a donation as you leave, you can help to ensure that the Redwood Community Centre programs continue for the It’s time to again join in song and enjoy all that is on offer. coming year.“
Saturday, October 17: Praise and Worship Service – 11.00 am, and the Massed People’s Choir and Orchestra – 3.30 pm (Attend either or both)
The Massed People’s Choir and Orchestra is an inspiring experience of singing and playing Hymns of Praise in a large group. Join the 400 or so singers and the large orchestra for the 2015 Massed People’s Choir and Orchestra.
The Hymns of Charles and John Wesley, and Isaac Watts.

Field days to raise profile THE Wandin-Silvan Field Days Committee will this year host its 46th annual field days. This premier agricultural event of the greater Yarra Valley region is a unique farm field days with a strong horticultural theme, focusing on the needs of intensive farming systems including orchards, vineyards, rubus growers, commercial nurseries and others. The Wandin-Silvan Field Days continues as a not-for-profit organisation. It is operated and run by a committee of local volunteers, some of whom have a history dating back to the first event. The field days foster community involvement with local schools and community groups, providing catering and other services as their major fundraising opportunity. Newly appointed president and long-time committee member William Anker is looking forward to the challenge of increasing the profile and maintaining the high interest in this important local event. William and his family have had a long-time association with the field day; his father John Anker is one of the foundation committee members and inaugural secretary. William said, “The event provides the perfect showcase for machinery, irrigation, farm inputs and a multitude of other items specific to specialised crops”. As well, “It is the ideal opportunity for local and regional business to make direct contact with their target audience”.
“From work boots to whipper snippers, ride-on mowers to sawmills, tractors, tools and tyres, worm farms, water tanks and welders, fertilisers, forklifts and fence posts; gumboots and government departments to caravans, motorcars and camping gear even homemade cakes and hot coffee - there is something of interest for everyone from the numerous exhibitors at the Wandin-Silvan Field Days. “There are few other field day events with this specific focus in Victoria, and the Wandin-Silvan Field Days commonly attracts growers not only from the local area, but those further afield across regional Victoria.” Of particular note this year: Jane Bunn, meteorologist and Channel 7 News weather presenter, will be in attendance for a luncheon on the Friday, and to address an audience of invitees, courtesy of WandinSeville Bendigo Community Bank and Rural Finance; A special feature will be the erection of a Scout Abseiling Tower, manned by trained professional abseiling staff, and the public will be invited to learn to abseil at the show; Black Snake Productions - featuring an educational and informative interactive display and talks from their snake pit - with taipans, brown snakes, tiger snakes, death adders, pythons, lizards, a croc and more on show in the snake pit, with reptiles for the public to handle between talks. The ‘General Interest’ Marquee section, featuring local regional products and demonstrations of cottage industries.

Food habits for a lifetime SIBILLA Johnson, B.Sc Nutrition, is a health educator who has given lectures all over the world, teaching parents and families the importance of eating well from a young age. Children’s attitudes to food are shaped quite early in life, so it is clear that examples set by parents and guardians play an important role in shaping and influencing the child’s perception for life, as well as their relationship with food. Primary school children, aged between 5 and 12, are at a stage in their development where physical growth is slow, but steady. Their food and eating habits are so important during this time, because children who are poorly nourished are likely to become tired and cranky. Of course, this can make life more difficult both during school hours and at home. Obviously, young children don’t usually have health problems such as high blood pressure or heart disease, but what they eat now can set the stage for these diet-related diseases later in life, so learning about food and nutrition at this early age should be made a priority. Sibillia will be giving free lectures on ‘Food Habits for a Lifetime’ at the Redwood Community Centre in Warburton on Tuesday 13 October, and Tuesday 20 October, at 7.30pm. Come along and learn how to encourage children to make healthy food and lifestyle choices from an early age. For more information, contact 0418 369 333.

Weight loss revisional surgery REVISIONAL Bariatric surgery is performed to repair or alter one of the various types of surgery done for weight loss. This is often required to improve weight loss outcomes and a person’s quality of life. With increasing numbers of surgical procedures performed for the treatment of morbid obesity, the need to revise and/or repair these operations is on the rise. The two operations that were widely performed for the treatment of morbid obesity and associated with a high rate of revision are gastric stapling and gastric band. The gastric sleeve and gastric bypass are the next stage in treatment for these patients. Careful assessment and consideration is essential in the decision between the patient, the GP and the surgeon. Type 2 Diabetes Best practice indicates Bariatric surgery before insulin therapy for patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Revisional surgery for patients with a failed gastric band Thousands of patients in Australia had gastric banding surgery between the years of 2000 and 2010; Statistics show a 50 per cent failure rate in these patients at five years; The device fails to achieve satiety as the stomach becomes fatigued leading to dilatation of the stomach pouch above the band; Often patients find the band intolerable to live with or it simply fails to

achieve significant weight loss. The solution is to remove the gastric band, wait three months and proceed to a sleeve gastrectomy or do a one-stage operation, removing the gastric band and proceeding to a gastric bypass. Both operations can be done laparoscopically. The surgeons at LSA have performed hundreds of revisional procedures for failed gastric band patients. Without intervention, these patients will more often regain all their weight. Case study revisional surgery This patient had gastric banding in 2010; Lost 23kg in the first two years; In 2014, attended for review and following an approximate weight gain of 30kg a salvage bypass was suggested and performed in February 2015; They had achieved a 20kg weight loss five weeks after surgery; Patients are reviewed annually by the in-house physicians to assess their general health and nutritional status due to the nature of this surgery. Importance of taking daily vitamins and minerals Vitamins and minerals are very important for the body; They help to keep you healthy and full of energy; Every day the body uses these vitamins and minerals, so they need to be replaced by eating nutritious foods; If you are unable to get enough vitamins and minerals each day, this can lead to poor health, making you unwell, low in energy and un-

LUSATIA Park Dexter Stud farm will be having an open day next month so people can come and get to know this breed of little cow. Dexter cows are a traditional Irish cow that date back to the 1800s and due to their smaller stature are great for smaller plots of land than are required for larger breeds of cattle. Stud owners Steve Ross and Vikki Chandler have been breeding the cows for about five years and want more people in the Yarra Valley to know about them. “Our push for this breed in the Yarra Valley is because there are a lot of small landholders of 10-50 acres in the area,” Ms Chandler said. “Dexters are perfect for smaller lots as you can carry more cattle than with the bigger breeds because they are a smaller animal.” Because of the smaller stature of the cattle, they are less hard on the land, softer on fences, need smaller cattleyards and are less intimidating than larger breeds. “We are first-time cattle handlers,” Ms Chander said. “Dexters have an incredibly good temperament, they are small, easy to handle and calve really well.” “They are great for people who may not have handled cattle before.” While the breed is very small compared to others they are not a miniaturised breed, they are just naturally small. They are a versatile dual-

Perfect for a house cow.” The Lusatia Park Dexter Stud open day will be on 25 October. It will be the fourth year Ms Chandler and Mr Ross have opened their farm to the public. “We weren’t that busy when we did open days in conjunction with the Dexter association,” Ms Chandler said. “From the second year onwards we decided to do it ourselves.” “We decided spring was the best time because the grass is green and the spring calves are
ready for sale.” The stud farm had about 10 groups through to meet the cattle last year and they are hoping to have more than that this year. Ms Chandler said the day was really good for getting to know the cows and experiencing the kind of lifestyle a smaller breed cow can offer. “It’s a real learning experience, and a lifestyle choice,” Ms Chandler said. “We’ve sold to people over the years and made good friends and network with other people who like these cows.” Ms Chandler and Mr Ross invite anyone interested in learning about these cattle to come down to the open day or send them an email for more information at vchandler@hotmail.com.au
Catch up with Ed Sheeran By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE competition is heating up for the chance to win two double passes to Ed Sheeran’s 'Jumpers for Goalposts’ concert film debut at Croydon Cinemas. Croydon Cinemas will receive a live feed of this cinematic event that will be beamed live via satellite from London’s world premiere in Leicester Square. You have a chance to snap up a double pass to the feed on Friday 23, Saturday 24 or Sunday 25 October that will include red carpet highlights and an exclusive live performance, before showing the film in its entirety for the first time. Jumpers for Goalposts brings together Ed’s performances from the biggest shows of his career at Wembley Stadium in July this year, where he wows the 80,000-strong crowd. The film also includes his biggest hits to date, including 'The A Team’, 'Sing’ and 'Thinking Out Loud’ - and there’s even a surprise duet. As well as his on-stage performance, ‘Jumpers for Goalposts’ is intercut with the story of Ed’s road to Wembley, presenting a revealing and personal glimpse into life backstage and on the road, along with an honest and intimate reflection by Ed - and those closest to him - on just how far he has come. This special global cinema event is an invitation for Ed’s millions of fans to join him around the world and celebrate what he has achieved so far, before inevitably he moves the goalposts once again. Croydon Cinemas are offering a money can’t buy experience for Sheeran fans to snap up two double passes to each of the screenings, so six double passes in total valued at $300. To be in the running, head to the Mail’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MailNewsGroup and find the post to enter. Good luck!

Dobson dominates Warburton golf WEDNESDAY, 30 September: PAR: winner: Mike Dobson, who returned to form with a stunning +6. Runner-up on a countback, with a creditable +3, was 12-year-old Django-Ward. Django is the future of the club (and great manners, too). Balls went down to square. Nearest
the pins were Alan-Johnson (9th), Gary-Ward (11th), and on the 15th, Geoff-Lord. Saturday 3 October: Stroke and Monthly-Medal: A-Grade and medal went to Ray ‘Happy’ Gilmore, with a great net 67. (‘Happy’ also had a fantastic Eagle on the 14th hole on the
Wednesday). Meredith-Nursery won B-Grade, also with a net 67. Clearly that handicap, (17) is too generous for the classy Meredith. Nearest the pins were won by Craig-Brown on the 9th, by Eddie-Leonard, (12th), and on the 15th by Shane Campbell.
