by her hair. Haugh allegedly held the woman’s head against a wall and grabbed her throat, telling her “I could kill you right now.” The complainant told police she found it hard to breathe before Haugh released her and punched a wall cabinet above her head several times. After he locked the house doors, Haugh allegedly refused to give back the woman’s phone because he believed she would use it to call police, Det Sen Const Jarvis said. Haugh allegedly told the complainant that if he killed her “no-one knows where you are”, the court heard. After the woman told Haugh her mother knew of her whereabouts, Haugh allegedly said he could kill her as well.

She called police soon after being dropped home by Haugh the next day. Det Sen Const Jarvis said Haugh, who had no prior convictions, admitted to police that he’d gone away with the victim but denied assaulting her. She said police took photographs of the victim’s bruised and grazed forearm and knees. Police arrested Haugh on 5 October at his estranged wife’s house where he was in breach of a full intervention order not to contact or approach her. Haugh’s lawyer Jeisa Javor told the court the wife wanted to reconcile with the accused, and had emailed police to have her intervention order cancelled. Ms Javor said Haugh was not a flight risk since he had no prior convictions, was a full-time sales representative and a 10-year volunteer firefighter.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said she was concerned that Haugh hadn’t been “taking seriously” the court-imposed intervention order with his wife. She weighed the seriousness of the allegations, with Haugh having “no prior criminal history of any kind”. Ms O’Donnell bailed Haugh on strict conditions including a night curfew, not to consume alcohol, to submit to breath-tests at the request of police and to reside at a specific Mt Martha address. “If you contact the primary victim in relation to these matters you’ll find yourself back in custody,” she said. Haugh was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 26 October.

A CLYDE North volunteer firefighter is set to deny charges of falsely imprisoning, recklessly causing injury and threatening to kill a woman while holidaying with her last weekend, a court has heard. In a bail hearing on Monday 5 October, Andrew Haugh, 45, through his defence lawyer, indicated that he would plead not guilty over claims that he violently assaulted and threatened the woman and then locked her in a house and hid her phone in his pocket. He agreed, without admitting guilt, to a full family violence intervention order to protect the 40-year-old complainant. Haugh and the complainant had been in a four-month relationship when
they went to Peterborough, Victoria, on 1 October, the court heard. Police informant Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis of Greater Dandenong CIU told the court that Haugh allegedly clashed with the woman the next night over a text exchange between him and his estranged wife. The complainant had allegedly warned she might as well pack her bags and go home, and she put Haugh’s phone in her handbag. Haugh - who had been allegedly drinking since the morning - then appeared to have “snapped”, Sen Const Jarvis said. “I’m sick of this s***,” the accused allegedly said. “You’re not going anywhere.” The woman claimed Haugh pushed her to the floor twice, then dragged her

POLICE recorded 255 driving offences in Casey over the Grand Final long weekend the second highest tally in the state. The high number was a result of traffic cops saturating the municipality as part of Operation Scoreboard, a state-wide initiative that ran from 1 to 4 October and which targeted drink, drug and illegal driving. Acting Senior Sergeant Pat Green from the Casey Cardinia Highway Patrol said he was pleased with the strong police presence in Casey over the weekend. “We had a lot of police in our patch, we were the second highest for offences,” he said. “There were a lot of coppers out and about.” Over the long weekend there were also six injury collisions recorded in Casey and three in Cardinia. In one of the Cardinia incidents, a woman aged in her thirties died from injuries sustained in a crash on McGregor Road on Thursday 1 October after being airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition. Across Victoria more than 1900 drivers were tested for drugs over the weekend, with 218 returning a positive sample, while more than 121,000 drivers underwent preliminary breath tests, with 286 recorded as over the limit. In addition, more than 2000 people statewide were caught speeding and 368 were caught using their mobile phones while driving. Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said the number of impaired drivers caught during the operation was very concerning. “By all means go out and enjoy yourself but if you plan to drink or choose to take drugs plan a safe way home - use a designated driver, call a taxi or take public transport,” he said. “I’m challenging the community to reduce these statistics over the next three months so everyone can enjoy this time of year with their family and friends - safely.”

THE parents of a 14-year-old girl who went missing from her Junction Village house on Saturday night have pleaded for their daughter to come home. Jade Robson-Whitehouse left her South Gippsland Highway home about 8pm on Saturday (3 October) and is believed to be with another girl. Jade’s father, Kim, and stepmother, Tracey, fronted the media on Monday afternoon, while police also confirmed Jade had contacted a friend of hers through Facebook on Monday. Her parents said it was completely “out of character” for Jade to go missing. It’s believed Jade, who does not have a phone or money with her, could be anywhere from Melbourne to the Latrobe Valley. Tracey said Jade was with another girl at the time, who Jade had invited to sleep over. The parents said they’d never met this girl before, while it’s believed Jade had been contacting her through Facebook. “She (the friend) said can we go and pick her up because her mum couldn’t bring her and Kim went and picked her up,” Tracey said. “And on the way Jade said, which was another thing out of character, we’ve got to pick her up from Cranbourne station. Well Jade’s not allowed to catch trains and we communicate with parents when we’re having sleepovers and he picked the girl up and brought her back to the house. “I asked for her mum’s number to communicate with her, she said her phone was flat so I charged her phone and then when the phone was charged she said my mum’s number’s missing. “And I said well I need to drive you home to your mum now ... to let your mum know you're safe. “So I went to get my shoes on and when I got back they were all gone.” The girls fled out the bedroom window and the dress Jade

Jess is on a mission By LACHLAN MOORHEAD JESS White would love if every week was Mental Health Week. As the director of Kane’s Crusade - a depression support and awareness group specialising in, but not restricted to, helping young men - Jess, from Berwick, has always been a strong advocate for the importance of mental well-being. And while she tries to push the message at every chance she gets, Jess said Mental Health Week, which was running now from Sunday 4 to Saturday 10 October, and the ABC’s coverage of the initiative, was a project that everyone should get behind. One in four young Australians, aged 16 to 24, have currently experienced a mental health disorder.
“It’s important, I would love to have more than one week’s focus,” she told Star News this week. “And with the spotlight it has through the ABC doing its ‘Mental As’ programming, this week has become a week to celebrate mental health. “To feel inclusiveness, support and appreciation that this happens in everyday life. “I think it’s vital.” Kane’s Crusade was set up in August 2014 and since then has amassed close to 6000 likes on Facebook. Earlier this year, Star News reported on how the group had launched a petition they hoped to deliver to State Parliament, calling for new laws to be promulgated in Victoria which would make
Jess White and Chantelle, a supporter of Kane's Crusade. it mandatory for all secondary school teachers to undertake Applied Suicide Intervention Skill Training (ASIST).
Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge is looking forward to Sunday’s TAB Cranbourne Cup, where they’ll be giving away a Hyundai Tucson to one lucky racegoer.
‘Your cup, your celebration’ By GEORGIA WESTGARTH JUST three days away the annual TAB Cranbourne Cup is gearing up to be a big day for the region. Cup day is billed as one of the largest sporting and social events on the Casey calendar, and the Cranbourne Turf Club is encouraging the whole community to join in the action. Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said the TAB Cranbourne Cup Carnival was shaping up to be one of their biggest and best carnivals yet. “Cup day really does offer something for everyone from racing fanatics to those who just want a fun day out, with plenty of action on and off the track to keep patrons young and old entertained,” Mr Bainbridge said. The classic event will include a day packed with entertainment and giveaways.
Boasting a 10-race program headlined by the feature $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup and the $100,000 Procon Developments Apache Cat Classic, the day also brings out some style with fashions on the field. This year the Cranbourne fashions on the field present $5000 worth of prizes across three categories and for the first time the Turf Club has teamed up with Cranbourne Hyundai to giveaway a $31,500 Hyundai Tuscon Active on Cup day. Mr Bainbridge said the carnival had cemented itself as one of the great country events during the Spring Racing Carnival. “From a racing perspective, we’ve got a much larger prize purse than ever before for the TAB Cranbourne Cup and a $1 million bonus on offer for potential Cox Plate contenders, so the feature race is sure to attract a top class field.
With more than 1000 people responding to the petition call out, Jess is currently getting the numbers together and plans to soon approach her local MPs to table the petition in parliament. Jess, who is trained in ASIST, is also pushing feverishly to set up an ALIVE centre in the City of Casey - a facility specifically for people suffering from depression where they could get medical treatment, physiotherapy, alternative medicines and counselling all under one roof. For more information on Kane’s Crusade, visit https://www.facebook. com/Kanescrusade, or www.kanescrusade.net. Those in need of immediate assistance can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
“This is your cup and your celebration, and if you haven’t already, I encourage you to book your tickets now to join in the action of the TAB Cranbourne Cup,” he said. On Sunday 11 October one lucky racegoer will also drive away in a brand new car. Up to 16 racegoers will be drawn out and allocated a horse running in the $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup; the finalist with the winning gee-gee will
also take home the car. Shane Lennon from Cranbourne Hyundai said his team was thrilled to support one of Cranbourne’s best days out. “As a local business, we’re delighted to team up with the Cranbourne Turf Club to offer one of our Hyundai Tucson to one lucky member of the community,” Mr Lennon said. For more, visit www.cranbourneturfclub.com.au or call 5996 1300.
Major cannabis operation busted By ANEEKA SIMONIS A MAJOR one million cannabis operation has been foiled in Narre Warren, leading to the arrest of two men. On Monday 5 October, Casey Response and Tasking Team officers executed a warrant on a Vine Grove, Narre Warren. Investigators uncovered more than 490 cannabis plants from the address with an estimated street value of one million. Giang Dyong, a 27-yearold Keysborough man and Viet Hoang, a 19-year-old Noble Park were charged with cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis and theft of electricity. Police spent the past two days dismantling “sophisticated” hydroponic set up, calling in a specialist biologist from Forensic Services, representatives from the power company and the Victoria Police Transport Branch. Both men faced an out-ofsessions hearing and were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.

Drug dealing and trafficking jumped from 153 recorded offences to 179, and stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour saw an increase of 32 per cent. John Hall from Cranbourne said he was horrified. After moving to Casey from Alexandra 10 years ago, Mr Hall said he was welcomed to the city with a sexual offence. “We had come from an area where there’s very little crime to experiencing someone get molested on the crossing a hundred yards from where I live after just moving in - it’s scary,” Mr Hall explained. With the city up 61 recorded offences for assaults between July 2014 and June 2015, Mr Hall said he wouldn’t drive to work at 3am without his car doors locked. “I won’t go walking by myself, I’d rather walk somewhere else,” he said. “I’ve got locks on my windows, have everything insured, I’ve done everything I can do already.” The Crime Statistics Agency report also exposed that Casey’s homicide and related offences were up more than 30 per cent on last year’s numbers.

LESS than impressed but not surprised at the jump in crime confirmed by recent statistics Cranbourne residents put the spike down to drug addictions and the cost of living. Experiencing a surge in robberies - up 39 per cent on last year’s figures - along with burglary and 'break and enters' up 14 per cent, Victoria Norris from Cranbourne thinks it could be a direct link with ice. “I know that there’s quite a big drug problem happening in the region and maybe theft is feeding their drug habits,” Ms Norris said. A new mum Ms Norris said it may be time to look into installing an alarm system with the figures released on Thursday 1 October by the Crime Statistics Agency showing a jump of 25 per cent in theft on the previous year. “An alarm would just increase comfort and you don’t want to not be able to do things out of fear, everyone has to look after their own neighbourhood these stats are an eye opener but I’d like to see how other regions compare,” she said. “Because unfortunately there’s a bit of stigmatism attached to Cranbourne, like ‘Crimebourne’ but if it’s jump-
ing this much where are we going to be in a few years’ time.” The numbers showed sexual offences had moved upward more than 30 per cent in Casey, but 17-year-old Tegan Weir from Cranbourne West said she was not surprised having been followed home numerous times. “I don’t feel very good when I hear stuff like this, but I do see a lot of it in the area I live,” Ms Weir explained. “My next door neighbour got robbed and with so many young people in Casey I think that could be a contributing factor, but it shouldn’t be happening regardless.” Long-term resident of Devon Meadows John O’Brien said the solid increase in crime made him feel insecure, adding that he’ll stay out of dark areas and always walk with the crowds. “I’ve lived here for 40 years and I’m not surprised - Casey is not a wealthy area and people are on limited income, many have a drug habit they need to support and the best way to do it is by theft,” Mr O’Brien said. As syringes left in public places become more common in the City of Casey, the stats revealed local police had dealt with more than 180 people for drug use and possession this financial year compared with last year.

Letters Library legacy
Holiday hotspot
I NOTE that Ms Inga Peulich, Member for South Eastern Metropolitan, recently made comments about local library funding, suggesting there was a flaw in the way it is currently allocated. Odd, because the current funding model - how the funding is divided between councils - was implemented by the former Liberal Government - Ms Peulich’s government. It is a shame that she took the unconstructive approach of criticising the Andrews government and failing to mention that it was a funding model we had inherited. Despite this, I am more than willing to consult on whether there are better options for funding local libraries, especially in light of our recent record $40 million investment. With that in mind, I look forward to hearing Ms Peulich’s constructive suggestions on a way forward. Natalie Hutchins MP, Local Government Minister.
What to do with Dan’s un-necessary Long Weekend? If you’re not a Hawthorn supporter - leave town for a long weekend. Support local tourism - Victorian small business, who will suffer from this dumb idea. The Grand Final is on Saturday, which has been a holiday as long as I can remember! And consider joining the Liberal or National Parties - to support our small business - lifeblood of the state and our biggest employers. With the socialist Andrews Government in charge, Victorian business can do with all the support we can give them. Don Jewell, Cannons Creek.

NO AUSTRALIAN-BORN citizen, no migrant who loves Australia, can condone the Parramatta shooting by Farhad Jabar Khali Mohammad, a 15-year-old boy. There can be no justification for attacks against the police force and police stations. Attacks against police seem to have become a routine, though. Last year two police officers were callously attacked at Endeavour Hills police station and last week a civilian police employee was brutally murdered at Parramatta police headquarters. The motive appears to be the same - religious fanaticism and radicalism. The police need our support because they are the representatives of law and order in our community. They constitute a rampart against any form of violence, public disturbances, riots, murders and acts of terrorism. We should, therefore, all stand up to stop more brutal and unjustified attacks against the police from happening. Otherwise, the situation in Australia might become similar to what we see every day in many other countries where only chaos and anarchy prevail. I, for one, feel a bit disappointed by our Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s response to the Parramatta shooting. He said the incident had been “a shocking crime” and a case of “cold blooded murder” but said it would be counter-productive if people rushed to blame Muslims Australians. In the above statement, the Prime Minister seems to be more preoccupied with the idea of not offending Muslims Australians rather than with the security of all Australians and that of the police force. As the Prime Minister of Australia, he should, instead, have issued a strong and firm warning of zero tolerance to anybody, whether

Court struggle SKYLIGHTS ROOF VENTS
A MAN allegedly found slumped behind the wheel of a stolen car in Cranbourne South has been refused bail. Robert Barden of Somerville struggled with police and demanded to see his family as he was led from his unsuccessful in-person bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 5 October. The court heard that Cranbourne police had found Barden inside the locked and running Holden Cruze sedan with allegedly false number plates earlier that day. Police informant Constable Allison Johnston alleged that when a “dazed” Barden got out of the car, a round of cartridge ammunition was found in the drivers-side door. A further search of the car uncovered cannabis in a plas-
tic deal bag and a large kitchen knife sheathed in cardboard inside a green duffel bag, the court heard. Tools including a screwdriver, pliers and a hammer were also allegedly found. At the time, there were two outstanding warrants for Barden’s arrest for failing to answer bail. Barden allegedly gave a largely “no comment” police interview, except for saying the cannabis was for his personal use and that he’d failed to appear in court due to family commitments. Const Johnston said Barden was still to face two other vehicle-theft charges, and presented “16 pages” of prior convictions to the court. Barden told the court he understood the “severity” of the charges as well as breaching his current community corrections
order but hadn’t had “much support to do with my criminal history”. “I’ve had a drug problem since I was 15 years old and nothing’s been done about it.” Barden submitted he could be placed on the therapeutic CREDIT bail program, which would allow him to also care for an ailing close relative. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said Barden’s re-offending while on a community corrections order - which included drug treatment and judicial monitoring - was “aggravating and concerning to the court”. She noted the applicant’s criminal history, which dated back to 2001, included “constant offending” this year. Barden was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 26 October.

Armed robbery: police peruse CCTV By GEORGIA WESTGARTH POLICE have taken CCTV footage from the Cranbourne Newsagency on High Street after a man wielding a machete stormed the store, stealing cash on Monday 5 October. Fleeing the premises on foot about 6.20am, the man got away with an amount of money from the register. Staff member of five years Eric Chong said it was shocking news to hear. “I think we just have to start being more mindful of the
people that are coming in,” Mr Chong said. Two staff members and a customer were inside the shop at 105 High Street, Cranbourne, when the incident occurred, however no-one was injured. Mr Chong said he couldn't recall such a brazen robbery occurring at the newsagency. After opening at 3am on Monday morning, the two staff members who witnessed the armed robbery have since gone home. Mr Chong was unaware of the amount of cash stolen by the
man, described as Caucasian and wearing a grey hooded top. Recent data from the Crime Statistics Agency has confirmed robbery is on the rise in Casey. Between July 2014 and June 2015 such offences increased 39 per cent, and local business owner Sam Abdulhak said he was worried. Owner of the Cranbourne Charcoal Chicken, located opposite the newsagency on High Street, Mr Abdulhak said, “it’s very dangerous now.” Anyone with information is urged to call 1800 333 000.

Stepping up for climb By GEORGIA WESTGARTH FOCUSING on the 88 flights instead of the 1642 stairs that make up Melbourne’s tallest building, Cranbourne resident Victoria Norris is taking on the Eureka Climb this November. One of the highest vertical races in the world the annual steps race is both a personal goal for Ms Norris and a chance to make a change in a young person’s life. Fund-raising for Whitelion, which supports youth at risk, and Interplast, helping those in the Asia Pacific region, Ms Norris said since taking on the challenge in May she’s learnt a whole lot about people doing it tough. “I’ve learnt that there’s a lot more kids in need than I ever thought,” she said. “We do take our day-to-day life for granted and this has put things into perspective like just having food to eat, shelter and family around you.” Aiming to lose 30 kilograms after giving birth to her first child a year ago, Ms Norris said it’s been amazing just how quickly the training has impacted her life. “Six months ago I couldn’t even recognise myself in photos and I decided that was it, and now I’m 15 kilos lighter - I was shocked how quickly I became accustomed to exercising every day, if I don’t get my walk in I notice my mood changes,” she said. Stepping up 300 metres of vertical elevation, Ms Norris said she was speechless after walking past the mighty tower not long ago. “A lot of people laugh at me and just say “are you crazy” because it is nuts, but I also signed up for the timing aspect - but it is my own race,” she explained. The event allocates two and a half hours to complete the 88 flights and Ms Norris said she didn’t care how long it took her - but she’s getting to the top. “Because it is about raising money for kids who struggle on a daily basis, I think

Stepping alongside 2500 other climbers, Ms Norris, a community engagement officer at Casey Race, said she was looking forward to seeing where the money raised went. “My friend and I have already raised close to $1000 and Whitelion sends out

MAKING headlines for all the wrong reasons, the woman who accompanied the two young boys caught on camera stealing a handbag from a high end Southbank restaurant is from Cranbourne. Splashed throughout the media since the alleged incident on Saturday 12 September the Cranbourne woman who was with two young boys at the time of the incident was arrested in Dandenong on Monday 5 October. Police charged the 35-year-old following the theft which took place around 8pm. It’s believed the woman told restaurant staff she was meeting friends who had already arrived. The woman has been charged with a number of theft and deception offences and will face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

Faith makes peace push By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FAITH leaders are playing a pivotal role in tackling family violence. A number of these leaders, councillors and activists gathered at the Dandenong Council Chambers on Wednesday to launch the Family Violence Prevention Resource kit - the culmination of the Challenge Family Violence project. The challenge project is a three-year partnership between Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong councils, with funding currently scheduled to finish at the end of 2015. The resource kit, entitled ‘Promoting Equality and Respect: An interfaith collaboration on preventing family violence’, includes fact sheets, faith perspectives, legal service, support contact numbers, and more. It was funded by the Department of Justice and Regulation and supported by Monash Health and the three councils. Joining Dandenong mayor Sean O’Reilly and Dandenong Interfaith development officer Helen Heath to talk to guests at the launch were a number of influential faith leaders including Father Jean Mawal from the Antiochian Orthodox Church of St Paul’s, Jasbir Singh Suropada from the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria, Suleyman Sahingoz from

upon to provide guidance and grassroots care to individuals. “That’s why collaborations can be so important, together we’ve developed a resource which will support our faith leaders in their discussions and actions as they seek to prevent and address the issue of family violence.” Dandenong community development officer Crystal Bruton, who was piv-
otal in putting together the resource kit, explained the importance of including the ‘faith perspectives’ section in the resource kit. “We invited the community faith and spiritual leaders who have contributed to this project to provide some references to religious texts or particular values that underpin their faith tradition,” she said. “And we’ve included them to show how particular faith traditions promote gender equality and promote respect towards women.” Ms Heath paid tribute to the community elders and volunteers for refusing to bury their heads in the sand in the face of such a confronting issue. “One of the things that the leaders here appreciated is working alongside each other, because it’s not easy talking about some of these issues and the challenges,” she said. “And we’re widely honoured that people acknowledge this project.” For more information about the kit, contact Greater Dandenong Council on 8571 1000, or visit www.greaterdandenong.com. If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence and needs support, you can contact 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732).
Grants target native growth for revegetation THE Casey Council is opening its pockets for residents keen to improve local vegetation. The City of Casey’s Biodiversity Incentive Scheme Grants are again available, offering financial help for residents who undertake projects to enhance and improve native vegetation. Landowners can now apply for a grant up to $2000 to manage the native vegeta-
tion on their property. Casey mayor Mick Morland urged residents and business with “remnant vegetation”, or areas of land that could be revegetated, to apply. “A recent survey indicated that only six per cent of indigenous vegetation remains within the municipality, so the council has implemented a range of initiatives to increase native vegetation, in-
cluding linking patches of remnant vegetation across Casey,” he said. “As part of Council’s Biodiversity Enhancement Strategy, these grants are offered to help landowners undertake actions that will improve the extent and quality of native vegetation in Casey.” The grants may be provided for actions including putting up fencing to protect remnant vegetation, controlling nox-
ious and environmental weeds on private properties, revegetating land with indigenous plants or implementing measures to control pest animals - including red foxes, European rabbits and feral cats. Applications close at 5pm, on Friday 9 October. For further details, including eligibility and assessment criteria, and to submit an application online, visit www.casey. vic.gov.au/biodiversitygrants

Stolen car at store A DISQUALIFIED driver has argued he was found with two different stolen cars in three days out of a misguided desire to get his life on track. Paul Donnell, 41, had been allegedly found by police next to a stolen Mitsubishi van with stolen number plates at a Cranbourne North 7-11 car park late on 4 October, a court heard on Monday. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Adam Green told the court that tools had been found in the van to trigger its ignition. The van had been stolen from
Caulfield, and the number plates taken from a vehicle parked at the Dandenong Club in the previous month, the court heard. On 2 October, Donnell was allegedly driving an unregistered stolen vehicle with stolen plates in Dandenong North. Inside the car was a backpack containing a screwdriver that police believed was used to steal number plates, Leading Sen Const Green told the court. Donnell, whose driving licence was suspended, admitted stealing the car’s number plates from a vehicle in Noble Park.
Defence lawyer Nadine Daniel told the court that Donnell’s offending stemmed from “borrowing cars in dubious circumstances” due to his own car being impounded. “The offence can’t be put on the basis that he stole it but was using a stolen car in circumstances that he should have known it was stolen. “(The vehicles) had things in the back that he wasn’t aware of.” She said most of Donnell’s criminal history related to breaching intervention orders rather than dishonesty offences. Donnell had suffered “significant issues” such as losing his removalist
business, clinical depression and at times sleeping rough since his marriage broke down four years ago, Ms Daniel said. She said he was driving the cars because he was “blinded” by his desire to get his business “up and running”. Because of his homelessness, Donnell was unaware his licence expired last year. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted Donnell’s “short but serious” criminal history for someone of his age. She remanded Donnell in custody for an assessment for a community corrections order the next day.
Plum career choice has Karly up for prize By GEORGIA WESTGARTH LEARNING the ropes in a maledominated trade, Karly TapnerGillies, of Clyde, is paving the way for young women in the plumbing industry. A first year apprentice, Karly will represent Clyde at the inaugural Plumbing and Fire Industry Awards in October. In her first year out of high school Karly scrapped the idea of pursuing a university degree in accounting and made the bold decision to become a plumber - and she’s never looked back. “I knew I wanted to be a tradesperson, and plumbing stuck out to me because it was a well-respected trade that’s always developing and one that’s recognised worldwide,” Karly said. “And I love it - it’s awesome.” The 18-year-old apprentice and footballer with the Melbourne Uni-

versity Women’s Football Club hopes getting shortlisted for the new awards will inspire other girls to consider plumbing as a career. “I don’t think many young girls know about the opportunities that exist in a plumbing career, or how welcoming the industry is. “It’s a great career for anyone, it keeps the brain ticking and it’s financially stable, so why not?” she said. The state-wide awards have been organised by key industry stakeholders to recognise excellence in the training and achievements of individuals in both fields. Karly will be up against other females in the Rose Curtis Award category, which specifically acknowledges a female apprentice or professional who has excelled. A total of 350 industry members will be in attendance at the gala presentation on Saturday 10 October.

Police hunt resumes for car thief POLICE are trying to track down a thief who stole a car from an address in Cranbourne West on Monday 19 January. Detective Senior Constable Angela Butler from the Casey Crime Investigation Unit said “we are still trying to find the offender”. The male strolled into a home on Crepe Avenue through an unlocked front door and stole a silver Hyundai wagon using keys taken from inside the home. Since the incident in January the wagon has been recovered but police have recently released CCTV images of a male they wish to speak to in the hope that someone will recognise him. The incident occurred about 3am and a credit card that was found inside the car was used at a local fast food outlet and numerous other stores in the Melbourne CBD area. Anyone who recognises the male or has any information on the incident is urged to contact the Casey Crime Investigation Unit on 9705 3114 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A DRINK of water at Banjo Paterson Park will soon take just the press of a button for pet owners and their best friends. Approval for water fountains fitted with dog bowls and a tap to fill up drink bottles was passed through a recent Casey Council meeting - to the delight of petitioner Susanne Arnott. With more than 80 signatures in favour of a freshen up to the old drinking fountains, Ms Arnott said it wasn’t until she took a jog around Berwick Springs that she noticed the convenience of attached dog bowls. “It has the water bubbler up top, a tap to fill up your bottle and dog bowl and an ’axle’ to tip out old water to keep it fresh for your dog,” she explained. Four months in the making, Ms Arnott is hopeful the two new pet-friendly fountains will
be installed by Christmas. A member of the Lynbrook Residents Association, Ms Arnott’s second petition wasn’t as successful. “Unfortunately we won’t be getting more rubbish bins with dog bag dispensers along the Banjo Paterson Drive walkway,” she said. Casey councillor Damien Rosario said the decision is a “balance between what we need, want and can afford.” “The bins weren’t justifiable and the City of Casey did trial the doggy bag bins but found they got vandalised and the onus is on the pet owner to police their pet’s excrement,” Cr Rosario explained. The three new drinking fountains - two of which hold dog bowls - will be scattered through the popular park near the barbecue area, cricket oval and play equipment.

Bloody idiot drink-drivers still have a lot to lose NO LONGER ‘bloody idiots’ the TAC has a new message and a set up for the TAB Cranbourne Cup which leaves no room for excuses. This spring racing carnival and in the lead up to the silly season, the Transport Accident Commission has revamped its drink-drive safety message launching a new slogan ‘A little bit over, a lot to lose’. The TAC released a message to all Cranbourne race goers to plan ahead for the Cup on Sunday 11 October which urges them to be ‘races ready’.
TAC road safety manager Samantha Cockfield said reaching out to Victorians about not drinkdriving on their way home from the track is “vital”. Research reveals that country drivers in areas outside metropolitan Melbourne are more likely to take the risk behind the wheel. “Everyone heading to the Cranbourne Cup this Sunday should be in for a great day of racing, which can often involve having a few drinks as well,” Ms Cockfield said. “What we don’t want race-goers
to forget is that having a plan to get home safely is more important than any race at the track.” Free courtesy buses will be running to the racecourse from Cranbourne railway station from 10am to 12.30pm and there is also a taxi rank near the exit gates for a safe journey home. “One in four deaths on Victorian roads involves someone driving with a blood-alcohol level of more than .05 - the consequences of drink-driving can be the loss of someone’s father, mother, brother or
sister,” Ms Cockfield said. Victoria Police will be parking booze buses in targeted areas throughout the country racing season and TAC breath testing teams will be set up at exit points at the Cranbourne track on Sunday providing free tea, coffee and water. The TAC said as many as 20,000 breath test teams will be set up across 60 country racing meets this season. - Georgia Westgarth
ATTENTION all hip-hop dancers and beat boxers in Casey and Dandenong. Applications are now open for the 2015 Fired Up Hip Hop Tournament, to be held later this year. The City of Casey has partnered with the City of Greater Dandenong and Replay Dance Productions to run the tournament, organised by a group of volunteers aged 12 to 25 from across the municipalities. Applications, for both groups and individuals, will be open until Friday 16 October and include four categories - breaking, beat boxing, urban choreography and individual freestyle. “This tournament is aimed at young emerging dance crews and individuals who have not won a major competition in the past,” Casey mayor Mick Morland said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for up and coming crews to showcase their talents to the community, gain experience performing in front of a crowd and compete for great prizes. “With the support of the two councils and Replay Dance Productions, this tournament is being organised by a passionate and enthusiastic group of young people who should be commended for the wonderful work they’re doing.” Individuals and groups wishing to compete must register their act with the council before Friday 16 October by downloading the application form at www.casey.vic.gov.au/youth “The council encourages our talented young people to start rehearsing, to get ready to battle it out and show off your moves at Fired Up! in November,” Cr Morland said. The hip-hop tournament will take place on Saturday 21 November at the Berwick Church of Christ Auditorium, 432-446 Centre Road, Berwick, between 12.30pm and 9pm. Tickets for spectators will go on sale at 9am on 26 October and can be purchased at www.trybooking.com/ILXT

Hardware giants set to face off CRANBOURNE Home will officially open a $40 million expansion on Saturday 10 October. Hardware retailer Masters Home Improvement anchors the project at the Springhill Drive-Thompsons Road precinct, joining Bunnings, JB Hi-Fi Home, Officeworks, Spotlight and The Good Guys. It’s the first time anywhere in Australia that Bunnings and Masters will trade within the same centre. Masters will create 130 jobs. Aventus Property CEO Darren Holland said the two could co-exist. “Two homewares giants competing will make renovating in this area more affordable,” he said. The expansion takes the Aventus Property-owned centre to more than 54,000 square metres, 38 showrooms and 1668 car spaces. The growth is set to continue, with another 7000 square metres of large-format retail showrooms and a freestanding pad site to be added and opened next year. Mr Holland said the project was the culmination of five years of planning. The company bought Cranbourne Home in 2004 and has doubled its size over the past 10 years. It started as a joint venture between local residents and long-term friends John Dunscombe and Brett Blundy. Mr Blundy is a significant investor in Aventus Property and global retailers including Lovisa, Bras and Things, Dusk and Adairs. He grew up on a farm in Clyde and opened his first retail store in Pakenham in 1980. Disco Duck was to become music chain Sanity. “Ten years ago almost to the day, I was working for another company in Sydney when I got a call from Brett Blundy,” Mr Holland said. “He told me he was thinking of buying a homemaker centre at Cranbourne and wanted my advice. “I met with him, which was in effect a job interview. “The next day I was working for him and a month later he purchased the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre.”

PRESTIGE LAND AUCTION FROM PAGE 1. OVER the last 10 years, the Kimberley Downs estate has offered large lots from 600 square metres up to 1200 square metres and this has been the key to developing a quality estate. The natural streetscape and a six metre setback have made the streets more spacious, encouraging a magnificent array of large homes. Saturday 17 October, at 1pm, marks auction day for the awaited “exclusive
final release” at the Kimberley Downs estate, to complete this prestigious estate, with extensive parklands and natural wetlands. The final release of the Kimberley Downs estate, being stage 10, includes 26 lots, with sizes from 600 square metres to 1112 square metres, with the choice of overlooking the extensive parks and wetlands or in a quiet court location. Construction of stage 10 has been completed and titles are expected in October.
With surrounding estates offering the smaller lot sizes, Kimberley Downs estate looks ‘on it’s own’ for the prestigious home builder. For more information about the land auction and to register for updates, please visit www.kimberleydowns.com.au or please call Monique 0419 119 719. The land sales office is on the corner of The Esplanade and Glasscocks Road, Narre Warren South and is open Saturday and Sunday, from 1pm to 4pm, or by appointment.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A NORMAL visit to the doctor turned out to be a life saving trip to the hospital which saved pregnant mum Shanae Taylor and her premature son Oliver. The Cranbourne mother of two could have been hours away from a seizure if her doctor hadn’t picked up the signs. “It wasn’t even a planned check-up I went to the doctors to get a letter to approve leave from work and my blood pressure was shockingly high, due to pre-eclampsia,” Ms Taylor said. At 29 weeks, baby Oliver was rushed into the world by caesarean birth due to the lifethreatening condition - something Ms Taylor describes as scary, foreign and worrying after naturally giving birth to her first child, Isabella, four years ago. “I made sure I was awake to experience some of it, I remember asking if I would hear him cry and they said they couldn’t promise that, but I heard a little cry - it felt like an out-of-body experience because it all went so fast,” Ms Taylor explained. “They held him up for a second and showed him to me and whisked him away and put him on life support - it was all really hard and I felt pregnancy grief because I knew what it was like after giving birth to Isabella.” The experience left Ms Taylor in an unexpected and terrifying situation - one that was made a lot easier with the help of the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation which supports families through a website, phone app and booklets in hospitals. Published by a foundation dedicated to supporting families of premature and sick babies,
CISS AGM THE Cranbourne Information and Support Service is holding its annual general meeting with guest speakers Maree Cullinan from the Balla Balla Community Centre and Mark Guthrie, CEO at Ray White Real Estate who will be discussing the future and the benefits of partnerships between businesses and notfor-profit organisations. ■ Old Shire Offices, Cranbourne corner Sladen Street and South Gippsland Highway on Wednesday 14 October at 6pm. Book at 5996 3333 or admin@cranbourneiss.org.au.

Tree planting day Ms Taylor said the booklets were most helpful during such an awful experience. “I used many things such as a bible over that period but the Life’s Little Treasures booklet had a lot of information relating to other peoples stories,” she explained. After finding some support through the foundation Ms Taylor said getting involved in the charity since Oliver’s ordeal was very important to her. “Oliver was in hospital for about 10 and a half weeks he came home two days before his due date because he had two brain haemorrhages, a hole in his heart and a heart murmur, an inguinal hernia which he had repaired and blood transfusions and oxygen support,” she said. “If I didn’t have the support around me from my own family I would have reached out to
the foundation more and I know some people don’t have that.” The Taylor family will be walking in the foundations ‘Walk for Prems’ this October to raise money for the organisation. “We have made a team called Oliver’s Army and the money raised will go towards providing more hospitals with booklets and giving families things like fuel vouchers because there’s so much driving back and forth to feed and visit after the birth,” Ms Taylor explained. Now on the mend, baby Oliver will be pushed around Albert Park Lake in his pram on Sunday 25 October for the foundation that supported his mum during his very first days. Memorial service for servicemen By CASEY NEILL A MEMORIAL service in Berwick will honour the men called up to serve their country during desperate times. The National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (Victoria) South-East Sub-Branch in November 2006 erected in Buchanan Park a plaque dedicated to the Nashos who served in the navy, army and air force between 1951 and 1972. In particular, it pays tribute to the 212 who paid the supreme sacrifice during active service in Borneo and Vietnam. The group each year holds a memorial service at the plaque and the event will this year take place from 10.45am on Sunday 11 October. The one-hour service will include a volley from re-enactment group The Great War Association and a wreath-laying ceremony.
LAUNCHED in Cranbourne in September with more than 75 stall holders the Cranbourne family market has lots on offer for the whole family and already has more than 90 stalls attending the next market day. ■ Cranbourne Public Hall, 166-178 South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne. Market open from 9.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday 18 October. To book a stall email Lauren on pakenhamfamilymarket@hotmail.com.

The National Servicemen’s Association of Australian represents the 287,000 young men the government called up for service during two conscription schemes. About 227,000 were called up between 1951 and 1959, during the Korean War, and were intended to form the 3rd Australian Imperial Force (AIF), but hostilities ceased and they were not needed. Between 1965 and 1972,
National Servicemen aged 20 were called up for two years’ full-time service to the army during the wars in Borneo and Vietnam. Of the 64,000 called up, 19,500 served in Borneo and Vietnam and the remainder were in support units in Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Australia. Buchanan Park is in Clyde Road, Berwick, next to Monash University.

Cup carnival kicks off By RUSSELL BENNETT THIS year’s Cranbourne Cup Day, on Sunday, is set to be one of the biggest ever. With prize money for the main event - the 2025-metre TAB Cranbourne Cup - having been increased over recent years from $175,000 to $300,000, the lure for big-name trainers and their horses to become involved has become even bigger. Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said this year’s Cup carnival was shaping up to be one of their biggest and best carnivals yet. “Cup Day really does offer something for everyone, from racing fanatics to those who just want a fun day out, with plenty of action on and off the track to keep patrons - young and old entertained.” Bainbridge said the club had made a conscious decision to increase the prize money, and therefore the stature, of the main race. It’s Cranbourne’s signature event, and it also helps to showcase even further the largest thoroughbred training centre in Australia. This year’s Cup carnival will kick off on Friday night for the Pinker Pinker Plate. Cranbourne’s Friday night racing calendar through to the end of May has seen an increase in prize money, from at least $20,000 per race up to $25,000. The Apache Cat Classic this weekend is set to feature one almighty showdown - the expected bottom weight ‘Super One’ up against the Peter Moody superstar ‘Moment of Change’, which is predicted to carry around 64 kilograms. While acceptances for the Cranbourne Cup don’t close until today (Thursday), local trainers Richard Laming, Robbie Laing and Michael Kent are set to lead the local training contingent. Sydney’s Chris Waller and Victoria’s leading trainer Darren Weir are also set to field runners. Ken Keys, meanwhile, is aiming to pull off the remarkable - something no trainer has done in more than 25 years and that’s win the Cup for a third time. The Cranbourne trainer will be represented by talented stayer - and last year’s Bendigo Cup winner - ‘Bring Something’ in this Sunday’s feature race. Keys’ victories in the race so far came in 2006 with ‘Blue Collar Jack’ and 2011 with ‘Boom N Zoom’. The last trainer to win the Cran-
Bring Something, pictured with jockey Jessica Payne and Ken Keys Racing Assistant Trainer Kasey Keys, will be one of the local hopes in the Picture: DONNA OATES $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup. 145035 bourne Cup three times was the legendary George Hanlon, in 1980, 1983 and 1989. “Bring Something is not a great chance this year,” Keys admitted, adding that his dream was to win his third TAB Cranbourne Cup in the coming years. “I think he’ll be better suited to the Bendigo or Geelong Cup over more distance. “But the dream is to win three, whether that’s this year or something we’ll keep trying to do.”
The Cranbourne Turf Club, meanwhile, has dangled a $1 million carrot in front of Cox Plate aspirants in the hope of luring some of the country’s best horses to contest the Cranbourne Cup. The club, in partnership with Tabcorp, announced the bonus for the connections of a horse that can win both the listed $300,000 Cranbourne Cup and the Group 1, $3 million Cox Plate. “Possible Cox Plate contenders now have a million more reasons to make a stop at Cranbourne on their path towards one of the major races of
the Spring Carnival,” Bainbridge said. “Being two weeks out from the Cox Plate, the Cranbourne Cup lends itself as a possible lead-in race.” Along with the quality racing this Sunday, there’ll be a Hyundai Tucson car giveaway thanks to Cranbourne Hyundai, and - of course - Fashions on the Field. Gates will open this Sunday at 10.30am and all racegoers can register to win the $31,500 Hyundai Tucson Active at the Hyundai tent located just inside the main entrance.
Up to 16 people will then be drawn out and each allocated a horse set to race in the Cranbourne Cup. The finalist who has the Cup-winning horse will win the car. “With jockeys, trainers and connections out to win the coveted Cup, racegoers hoping to drive away with a brand new car, and lots of ladies hoping to take out the Fashions on the Field, plenty of people will walk away winners from Sunday,” Bainbridge said. For tickets and further information, visit www.cranbourneturfclub.com.au or call 5996 1300.
Singapore’s Super One ... could he be in for a super run? SINGAPORE’S star two-year-old last season, Super One, is set to make his Australian debut at Cranbourne this weekend ahead of his Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes tilt. Trainer Michael Freedman confirmed that the unbeaten three-yearold would kick off his campaign in the $100,000 Apache Cat Classic (1000 metres) on TAB Cranbourne Cup day on Sunday. The I Am Invincible colt blitzed all
rivals in his four career starts in Singapore as a two-year-old, including his past two starts at Listed level in the Golden Horseshoe and Juvenile Championship, winning both by five lengths. Freedman said the Apache Cat Classic seemed like the best starting point for Super One, who will finish his stint in quarantine next Saturday, the day before the race. “The 1000 metres was most appealing for us to kick off with; it fits in well
for the program ahead of him,” he said. “Given he won’t have had a run since the end of July, the 1000 metres was more appealing than some of the other races we were considering for him over 1100 and 1200 metres. Freedman, the brother of Lee and Anthony, said it was hard to know how Super One would shape up against his Australian rivals, but he had done everything right to date to justify having a crack at a spring feature.
“We’re probably more hopeful than anything else heading into his campaign, but he’s done everything he could do here in Singapore thus far,” he said. Freedman said the $500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200 metres) on Derby Day was Super One’s only spring feature target at this stage, but that the colt was likely to stay in Australia beyond spring. “We’ll obviously have to see how
he performs at Cranbourne, but hopefully he goes well and then the main goal will be the Coolmore after that,” he said. “At this stage, that will be it for him then we’ll look at the autumn next year.” Freedman said, depending on the weight Super One gets for the Apache Cat Classic, Hugh Bowman was likely to take the ride at Cranbourne, as well as in the Coolmore.

Old rivals square off in creek battle By JARROD POTTER DDCA SEASON PREVIEW THE turf is down, the side is ready and the association has rolled out the welcome mat. Everything is set for Beaconsfield Cricket Club’s first outing in the Dandenong District Cricket Association for the 2015/’16 season. Resuming rivalries after decades apart in different leagues, the “Battle of the Creek” will be an all-year affair once again, and Beaconsfield will square off against Berwick in the first Turf 3 battle between the next-door neighbours. Saving the inaugural run-around on Perc Allison Oval’s new turf deck for Sunday, the newest DDCA side is ready for the challenges ahead with a new-look first XI. “There’s great excitement here,” new captaincoach Dylan Freitag said. “There’s a great vibe around the club wanting to do well this year.” Making his way up from Centrals in the Traralgon and District Cricket Association - Freitag made the switch when he moved to the south east, and thought taking the reins at the Tigers was a great opportunity to help develop the side’s turf prospects. “Came down for personal reasons - was moving to the Cranbourne area as it was, and I saw the guys were advertising for a new captain-coach,” Freitag said. “Didn’t really apply for the job - asked the president and after having a chat we pretty much had an interview and asked them what competition they were playing in. “They said they were shifting to turf, and I’ve been playing turf since 14 years old, so why not come out and help the club in a new competition.” Freitag will have a number of new ins to pick from for his inaugural DDCA first XI with Josh Beets (Devon Meadows), Heshal Silva, Mario Perera (Dandenong West), Jack Lawford (West Bairnsdale) and UK player Matt Golding (Toongabbie). The biggest name he’ll have to select is former captain and coach Glenn Marinic who returns to the club after a year out of the game. His biggest weapon will be returning opener Brendan Johnson, who is hoping to recapture the form of 2013/’14 where he belted 803 WGCA District runs. How the side will go, what the composition is and where the side will fit into the pecking order is something Freitag said could only be found out after a couple of rounds. “Hard to say, being the first year on turf again, the first few games will be a learning curve for a lot of them,” Freitag said. “As a committee, we’re just talking about improvement - blooding a couple of the young kids, get them onto the new turf as early as possible and
Glenn Marinic is back for Beaconsfield’s first crack at turf cricket. 117241 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS mixed with a bit of experience to keep improving on last years. “From the big highs two years ago, going undefeated and winning a premiership, to last year not winning a game as blokes walked out on the club - it’s all about having improvement and showing the DDCA what we can do.” Beaconsfield will feature six senior sides, one masters team and seven junior sides in its inaugural DDCA season. Berwick will be fearsome in 2015/’16 in the DDCA’s Turf 1 competition with the addition of Victorian Premier Cricket champion Nathan Pilon. The former Carlton wicket- keeping mainstay - who is also the club’s leading dismissal getter throughout its Premier history - smashed 6654 runs at the first grade level and will be a starring addition to the Berwick batting order for another charge at the DDCA flag. Also making his presence felt at the Bears this season will be Josh Holden, with the DDCA premiership player returning home after two seasons away at Casey-South Melbourne in the Premier first XI. Robert Bleumink (Grassmere) and English leggie Jack Williams round out the inclusions to the line-up. Narre Warren will return to the top flight after an amazing lower-order fight back to take the 2014/’15 Turf 2 premiership. The Magpies knocked over St Brigids/St Louis and avoided the reverse outright as Sanjeewa Weerasinghe (53) starred with the blade. Kaushalya Weeraratne and Wendell Perumal will lead the side in 2015/’16 as it hopes to change the poor fortunes that demoted them from Turf 1 in 2013/’14. Cranbourne has only gotten stronger with the inclusion of St Kilda all-rounder Matt Chasemore into the line-up to support perennial Wookey Medalist Steve Spoljaric while Heinz Southern Districts will hope to go one step better than last year after its defeat in the Turf 1 grand final against Mordialloc.

Cavaliers boys show their worth By JARROD POTTER FINISHING their season on a high note, Casey Cavaliers boys under-14 team proved one of the best junior basketball teams in Australia. The Cavaliers fought their way up to fifth place in the Basketball Australia under-14 club championships which were held last week in Perth. Battling teams from across the length and breadth of the country - Cairns Marlins, Tamworth Thunderbolts, Northern Tasmania, Melbourne Tigers, Bendigo Braves, Bulleen Boomers and Central Districts - the Casey contingent excelled to book its spot in the fiveversus-six playoff on the final match-day in Western Australia. The boys rallied to take the 50-40 win over South Australia’s Central Districts in its final match together for 2015. “We did well - ended up fifth in Australia out of 24 teams competing,” Casey coach Simon Phillips said. “We achieved the goals that we set for ourselves - we wanted a top six finish and that gives us a lot of feedback. “We only lost three games - and those were to the sides that finished second, third and fourth - so that’s a true reflection of where we should’ve finished.” While his Cavaliers weren’t as tall as the mightiest sides across the country, their fighting spirit and scintillating speed impressed Phillips the most as they burnt off all-comers. “Our middle range height players really stepped up in the championship and other teams found it hard to match up on us,” Phillips said. “Especially when they put all their bigs on court and we were too fast for them.” “The standout was when we got within 13 points of the VC champions Melbourne - we really came out and played that game - good physical game and that was the one I was really proud of.” The coaching group believed Makaio Haywood was the best player across the tournament and was very closely followed by Gericho Landicho. The team will go its separate ways now with most players going up to under-16s next season but Phillips hoped the side inspired the next generation of Cavaliers to work hard off the court to drive the successes on it. “They really have to work on their game outside of official trainings to achieve what these boys did,” Phillips said. “At least four or five of them were doing outside individual

training with other coaches and three or four were going to schools that focus on basketball. “This upcoming year will be a learning curve for them as
now they’re the young boys going up into the older age groups and will need to take the experience they used in the nationals to take them up again.”

Panthers open with a bang By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 1 REVIEW DANDENONG should take the field every public holiday if Friday’s effort against Kingston-Hawthorn is anything to go by. The Panthers (0/115) mauled the Hawks (114) in all facets of a 10-wicket thumping as Victorian Premier Cricket commenced with a rare Friday season-opener on the Grand Final Eve day-off. James Miller (21) and the skipper Ryan Ninan (37) had the makings of a strong partnership in the middle order, but once West Gippsland seamer Adam McMaster (2/21) steamed through Miller, the wheels started to fall off the Hawks’ innings. Sharing the wickets, James Wilcock (3/36) and spinner Pete Sweeney (3/16) dispatched the lower order to rattle off 7/62 in an impressive period after drinks. Skipper Donnell (61no) and longtime opening partner Brett Forsyth (49no) destroyed anything the Hawks could muster. Donnell took to Javed Khan (0/19 off three overs) and Tom Collett (0/27 off three overs) to force KingstonHawthorn to frantically switch up its bowlers. It didn’t work as Donnell smashed his first half-century of the season. Forsyth was not to be outdone by the skipper, as he proved exceptional with some inventive strokes - including a “Dilscoop” over his head for four - and two front-foot, cross-bat sixes with the match-winner leaving him one short of a well-deserved 50. It only took the opening tandem 14.5 overs to dispatch the visitors without so much as a second innings drinks break as the clock stopped ticking at 1.54pm in one of the earliest finishes in club one-day history. “It was pretty handy - we thought it was going to be a tough one first up ... but the game was looking in the balance when they were only a couple down,” Donnell said. “To fight back and take six or seven for 30 in the middle there really set things up. “(The pitch) was alright - bit on the slower side, which it always is this time of year, but just wanted to take advantage of the short boundary and the wind, so luckily got a couple away which was good.”

Tom Donnell saw them like beach balls on Friday as he belted Kingston-Hawthorn out of the match in a 14.5 over barrage. 145171 Pictures: JARROD POTTER Donnell praised his bowlers for clipping the Hawks’ wings as 114 is a chase any Premier batsman would take in a heartbeat. “The batsmen have the easy job out there always and it’s not too bad chasing a low target,” Donnell said.
“It’s the bowlers that have to take all the credit there - they’ve put in a great pre-season there and the rewards start to come, and hopefully we can take it from here.” Donnell admitted the side is in need of a front-line spinner but was pleased
with the left-arm efforts of Sweeney as the side utilised its part-timers well. “That’s one obvious thing we’ve tried to fix,” Donnell said. “We’ve tried to get a spinner and haven’t been able to get a hold of anyone, but Pete did a great job today - he’s a really good bowler and knows what he can do and is a little bit underrated I think, even within the club. “We’ve still got Tanner (Stanton) to bowl a few leggies too and that’s filling in a little bit - we need a frontline spinner that would top us off nicely, especially in the two-dayers to bowl a chunk of the overs.” Dandenong hopes to get former Victorian representative Darren Pattinson into the line-up soon to add another point of power to the first XI. The Panthers head out to Toorak Park to battle Prahran in round two action. The rampage didn’t extend to Casey-South Melbourne (155), as the
Swans were pummelled by Camberwell (6/270) in their round one clash. Casey’s new-look attack - led by former Dandenong quick Nathan Lambden (2/53) and captain Lachlan Sperling (1/52) - were unable to halt Camberwell’s attacking batsmen. The home side’s powerful middle-order strikers Justin Lampard (52) and Chris Thewlis (46no), after Morgan PerssonClark (81) set the stage with a dour opening effort. Casey’s response revolved around new opening batsman James Seymour (81) - who put in a gallant half-century despite a lack of help from his middle order and beyond. Sperling (23) pushed the run-rate along but fell early to Thomas Russ (3/47). Once Seymour succumbed to Russ at 4/128 the floodgates opened, with Casey dismissed in the 39th over for 155. Casey-South Melbourne will host Geelong in round two at Casey Fields in another Premier one-dayer.
WGCA season hits off and the intrigue just continues By RUSSELL BENNETT and JARROD POTTER WGCA - PREMIER AND DISTRICT DIVISIONS SEASON PREVIEW MUCH of the intrigue in the top two tiers heading into this West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) season rests on the Casey-based clubs. Premier newcomers Cranbourne Meadows are fresh off winning the District title last year but will find the going much tougher in the top grade. Player-coach Chris Milne (Skye), Brent Whyte (Hurstbridge), and Shameera Weerasinghe (Beaconsfield) head a list of exciting inclusions, but the Premier side - skippered by Geoff Bradshaw - has lost Shane Murdoch to Bendigo. “Our bowling will be our strength this year with most players handy with the pill,” Bradshaw told the News. “After a shuffle of players the Premier team looks to be in good shape.
We will look to be more than just competitive.” Merinda Park, meanwhile, has seen a raft of changes since the end of the 2014/15 season. Last year’s bolters - who ultimately finished second on the Premier ladder after an outstanding home and away season Jason Toan, Reece Williams (Surfers Paradise), Nick Tucker (Bamawm Lockington United), and Paul Filippone (Skye) have all come on-board, but Jess Mathers - one of the most proven commodities in the WGCA’s fast bowling stocks - has joined rivals Kooweerup. Cobras skipper Danny Diwell is confident in the well-rounded, balanced side at his disposal and the group is aiming to again make the top four, despite the loss of Mathers. Tooradin has also lost a big-name all-rounder, with Cal O’Hare heading to Buckley Ridges in the DDCA. But the Seagulls have welcomed Bradey and Matt Welsh from Pakenham and
are expecting plenty of improvement from their promising group of young all-rounders. “Dylan Sutton has had a massive pre-season and will look to have a big year with both bat and ball,” said skipper Tom Hussey. “He has really led the way at training, setting excellent standards and showing big improvements in his game early. “Our improvement will come through understanding our game and controlling the controllables. We’re striving for consistent cricket.” In District, only six teams will fight it out for the crown. The fixture will take some getting used to at first, with sides facing each other up to three times in season 2015/16. It will be interesting to see what the switch to an all-synthetic pitch does for the Vikings’ top order as once the ball is hit on Carlisle Park, it won’t stop. With a new coach, Pe-
ter Neville, new name, new ground, not much from the Lyndhurst of old remains season-relevant for the newlook Vikings. Jason Hameeteman is the biggest loss in the division as his 1565 runs in three WGCA seasons won’t be replaced that easily. Ammar Bajwa remains one of the best all-rounders going around and alongside Mark Henry and Justin Hinkley will be a handy triumvirate in the Vikings’ top order. Whether sides need to adjust to Carlisle Park’s synthetic surface will dictate a few outcomes. Meanwhile, aptitude at the batting crease was all that separated Clyde from the peaks of District last season. From holding top spot before Christmas, it started to tumble away for the Cougars to miss the grand final. John Simpson will anchor the batting once more while Kyle Brooke will be part of the multi-pronged pace attack that will worry many in the as-
sociation alongside Pat Lawson and Nick Sadler among others. Bilal Abbas has replaced Bradley Birkhead as Clyde’s token Englishman because Birkhead wanted to return but had to cancel at the last moment. The club has added more batting depth via Daniel Walton who may also take the gloves. Finally, at Devon Meadows, the Panthers are looking to take that next step. Jamie Glen and Ash Adams will add plenty to their batting and bowling stocks respectively, with skipper Lucas Carroll, Darren O’Brien, Kyle Salerno and Matt Hutchinson around the top of the pops. The half-season outs of Ben Hussey and Adam Newstead hurt the bowling attack but Mick Floyd and Hutchinson are more than capable of burdening the extra workload. It’s a solid line-up on paper but whether that translates into the regular season is up to the cricketing gods.

Battle in curtain-raiser By JARROD POTTER WHILE everyone else’s Grand Final day preparations consisted of stocking the fridge and manning the barbecue, Dandenong Stingray forward Josh Battle had a lot more on his plate. Battle, 17, from Berwick, earned his ticket onto the MCG for the Saturday morning curtain-raiser between his Under-17 AFL Academy team and the Australian Allies. Comprised of the best Australian talent available for next year’s AFL draft, the AFL Academy team was undersized against the older and strong bodies of the Allies, but put up a gallant performance to stay in the curtainraiser clash. Taking his place on the MCG was awe-inspiring for the 190cm forward prospect as he got to take in the atmosphere of playing on the hallowed turf. Saturday was an overwhelming experience,” Battle said. “It’s what every boy dreams of - playing on the MCG - and getting to play with this great bunch of blokes, wearing the Australian guernsey was pretty honourable.“ While it took a while for him to get used to the fast-paced contest, Battle fought his way into the clash and booted a goal to sign off his first - but hopefully not last - outing on an AFL field. “I struggled to sort of get into it through the first quarter, but then worked my way into it and kicking a goal on the MCG was pretty good,” Battle said. “Looking up in the stands, seeing people just watching us play - I sort of looked up and soaked it all in.” The Allies proved too strong for the Academy, knocking over Battle’s men 13.10 (88) to 12.2 (74). The clash capped off the playing portion of 2015 for the Doveton/Haileybury footballer, which was cut short in Dandenong’s preliminary final loss to Eastern Ranges. “It was unfortunate to lose in the finals - didn’t want to go out that way - but this pre-season, the bottom agers

of this year will have to work a little bit harder next year,” Battle said. “We know what it takes to get back to the finals, so we’ll just have to hit it out harder in pre-season.” Now Battle shifts his attention to the biggest pre-season of his life for his draft year. He’s already been in an initial camp
with the AFL Academy, will spend a fortnight training with an AFL club before embarking on an international preseason training program in America ... all that plus trying to get back and play for Dandenong and Haileybury this year. It’s set to be hectic, but Battle is thrilled to take his Academy chance and absorb everything he can during
this opportunity. “I went into camp on Sunday, met all the boys and was a pretty long, draining week - Sunday to Sunday,” Battle said. “Some of the things I learned there were incredible - just everything they taught me, I learned so much there about nutrition, everything necessary to become an AFL footballer.
“We head back into camp with the Academy in November, probably go back to Stingrays on the 13th and do a bit of training there and back into the Academy - apparently it’s really hard this first week, getting us ready and emulating an AFL club pre-season.” Battle’s Dandenong Stingrays team-mate Myles Poholke also featured in the AFL Academy match.
Great season New kids hit the pool opener for Cougars THE Berwick City Cougars have made the perfect start to the new Victoria Summer Baseball League season, toppling the hometown Malvern 6-4 on their own diamond. The Cougars’ top side, playing in the Division 2 firsts, clinched a hard-fought win while their thirds and fourths also secured victories in week one of the season - the thirds 7-6, and the fourths a whopping 18-4 result. All three of Berwick’s winning sides sit in equal top spot on the ladder after Round 1 of the season. The Cougars’ firsts will this Sunday host Bonbeach from 3.30pm at Cyril Molyneux Reserve. The seconds game will start at 1pm, while the thirds will head to Bonbeach for their own game at 3.30pm and the fourths will travel to Moorabbin for their game from 1pm. - Russell Bennett QUIZ NUMBER 1473 ANSWERS: 1. By EWAN KENNEDY A few weeks back we enjoyed a great day at Phillip Island thrashing around in a series of brightly coloured gen-three Mini JCWs. Now we have come back to reality having road tested one for a week on our home turf on the Gold Coast - traffic, speed cameras, rough and ready roads, the full catastrophe. Given the high-tech nature of the all-new third-generation John Cooper Works (JCW) and engineering ability of BMW, which runs Mini these days, it didn’t come as a surprise that the real-world didn’t faze the car in the slightest. Minis are all about style and the JCW takes the already excellent shape of the standard Cooper S a step further. Its signature is a red bar across the centre of the grille. Larger cooling slots in the lower front are certainly not there for decoration - one of them funnels air through an auxiliary radiator to keep temperatures under control. However, this change means there’s no space for foglights. Interestingly, the reshaped door sills are also not decorative, being part of the revised aerodynamic package. A large rear wing also adds downforce.

Cheeky and sporty - the Mini John Cooper Works. Grey coloured spats around the wheel arches look great. Our car came in standout orange and black and drew plenty of admiring looks from Mini enthusiasts. Sports seats give good side grip but aren’t so deep as to make entry and exit a pain. Should you not want to do any hard track work you may care to select seats with shallower bolsters. All-new JCW Mini uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol en-
gine with 170 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. Peak torque runs all the way across the engine’s range from 1250 rpm to 4800 revs, with a plenty of punch still there right through the fives. Our test car had a six-speed automatic transmission. Sixspeed manuals haven’t come off the boat yet, but are due any day. Paddle shifters do give full control over gear changes in the auto.
