Bird’s-eye view of sinkhole ONE local business is making the most of a massive sinkhole at the popular Inskip camping ground by offering people the chance to view the landslip from above. Skydive Ramblers Rainbow Beach is offering daredevils the best views of the sinkhole; an aerial tour witha difference. Coralie Ferreira of Skydive Ramblers Rainbow Beach said skydiving over the sinkhole is the best way to view the phenomenon. “It’s really beautiful up there – you can see how deep the sinkhole is and you can see the darkness and the depth of the water right near the shore,” she said.

Greens enter fray NOOSA Greens have announced they will endorse a candidate to run in the 2016 Noosa Council elections in March next year. With the Noosa Greens is yet to hold pre-selections, they are remaining tight-lipped on who will be running as a candidate and if they intend to run for councillor or mayor, but the announcement marks the entry of party politics into the Noosa Council. In a statement to the media, the Noosa Greens said they will endorse
a candidate following the “excellent primary vote Joe Shlegeris achieved as a candidate in the recent State Election” and “Greens success across local governments in NSW”. “The Noosa and Hinterland Greens resolved to campaign for Noosa to become the first local government area in Queensland to vote in a Greens councillor,” the statement said. “Branch members believe a candidate who values the four Greens principles of ecological sustainability; grassroots democracy; non-
violence and social justice, delivered with sound economic practices can give voters confidence when choosing their local representative. “A Greens councillor would add further momentum to Noosa Council’s sustainability objectives.” The Noosa Greens said they wanted to run a candidate to mitigate the potential threat to the Noosa Plan should “pro-development” candidates nominate. “With the Noosa plan exposed to Labor’s policy of accommodating another 2 million people in
Queensland’s south east corner, our community needs to send a clear message; Noosa’s planning protections are off limits,” the statement said. Locals made their thoughts clear on social media following the announcement this week calling for party politics to be kept out of local government. “Keep your political noses out of Noosa’s local issues,” said Gregory James Steele on Facebook. “We have always done just fine with passionate local and Indepen-
dent candidates ... we certainly don’t need your input.” Neil Walker said party politics weren’t needed in local councils, saying “its politics that bugger up the world”. Facebook user Chris McDonnell said all local councils should ban political affiliations and called on councillors and mayors to not be paid. Have an opinion? We would love to know what you think on the Greens’ announcement as well as the coming election. Send your thoughts to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au.

Push for nude rights MORE than 20 people turned out at Noosa’s unofficial nudist beach on Saturday calling on the government to legalise a clothing-optional beach for the region. Local architect and same-sex marriage advocate Robin Bristow led the rally at Alexandria Bay asking if Queensland is the smart state, then “why is it 40 years behind the rest of Australia when it comes to nude beaches?” “Tourists come from all around the world to visit Australia’s iconic resort towns and cities. These tourists can legally enjoy nude sunbathing all around Australia except for here in Noosa where they get themselves arrested,” he said. “Queensland needs to act now to preserve its desperately needed tourism industry from having its name trashed by the state’s outdated attitudes towards nudity.“ Mr Bristow called on local residents to lobby council, tourism organisations and state members to change the “oldfashioned law” in Queensland. “This campaign is going to need your vocal support, but it is entirely doable,” he said. Mr Bristow said the Australia Sex Party, who organised the rally, were already in the process of drafting a submission to the Queensland AttorneyGeneral to have the Summary Offences Act changed to enable local councils to exempt clothing-optional beaches from the scope of the Act. Mr Bristow said the Australian Sex Party would need the support of local councillors, tourism organisations and

what they thought of making Alexandria Bay an official nudist beach. “If it was official, then it could be signed to warn off the prudish,” - Jane Boehm. “It’s always been an unofficial nude beach since I came to the coast in the ’70s. It is so out of the way and hard to get to. There are plenty of other beaches to go to if you don’t want nudity. Time to make it official,” - Maxine Dwyer. “It’s been a nudist beach for years and years,” - Joal Smith. “No. It’s the most beautiful beach in Noosa. Why should the dirty old men have it?” - Karena Nuttall. “I think, to be fair to everyone, just make the south end an official nudist beach. Then those who are offended can also enjoy the beach. Personally, I don’t care either way,” - Pauline Gleeson. “Yes! It has always been a nudist beach so leave it as it is. Prudish people don’t have to go there,” - Rosslyn Tadd. “Walked through there once by accident with my hubby. I learnt some valuable lessons: 1) nudists do not look like they do in movies, 2) gravity and time are cruel mistresses, and 3) slip, slop, slap!” - Jodie Russell. “If they want to hike up and down to get their kit off and skinny dip, go ahead,” - Justine Plummer. “Each to their own, away from children,” - Leanne Henningsen. “It’s a shame it’s not more easily accessed,” - Alex Baker. “No, get your own pool and do the nude thing at home. Why should the public have it in our face?” - Fay Wheeler.
All set for river fest perfection A PERFECT spring day is expected for the third river festival on the Noosa Boathouse lawn with live music, street food and cold drinks all on offer. The Spring River Fest will kick off at noon this Sunday 11 October with delicious street food from Noosa Boathouse chef Shane Bailey, drinks supplied by Stone and Wood Beer and live music from some fantastic local acts. Setting the mood with his chilled out tunes will be Sean Fitzgerald from 1pm, followed by local talent Matt Stillert from 3pm, and Jay Bishoff from 5pm. The festival will be a warm welcome back to the coast for Jay, the original creator of the Peregian Originals, who has just returned after almost four years living in Bali. The festival is free of charge, although optional donations can be made to Sunshine Butterflies Charity at the entrance. Noosa Boathouse owner Phil Bradford said the festival is perfectly timed

Phil said he encouraged people to bring their family and friends down and
enjoy the atmosphere, entertainment and sunset on the river. Noosa Boathouse has had a facelift, with some work recently done to the front of the vessel, including a new coffee bar - Little Boaty on the front deck. The awesome Wolff Coffee will be available on Sunday, along with fish and chips and other delicious street food.
Bad weather and running costs were blamed for the poor performance of last year's Noosa International Food and Wine Festival, but director Jim Berardo is determined to relaunch the event in 2016.
Berardo backs new festival By JOLENE OGLE SHERATON Noosa Resort and Spa has been named as the winner of Tourism Noosa’s sponsorship offer for a 2016 food event, but Jim Berardo said the announcement won’t change his plans to re-launch the International Food and Wine Festival next May. Tourism Noosa chairman Steve McPharlin said the Tourism Noosa board had offered Noosa Pacific Hotel, which owns Sheraton Noosa, sponsorship for a culinary event to be held in May 2016 that will showcase the region’s culinary and produce offerings. Only last month restaurateur and former director of the International Food and Wine Festival Jim Berardo announced he would re-launch the failed food festival in May 2016. In a statement to media, Mr Berardo said while the announcement from Tourism Noosa is “disheartening,” he confirmed he will host the Noosa International Food and Wine Festival under Berardo Festival Management in May 2016. According to Mr Berardo, “the dates” for the planned event have been “booked” with Noosa Council. “The dates for the next Noosa International Food and Wine Festival event, 19-22 May 2016, were booked by Mr Berardo with the Noosa Shire Council,” the statement said. But a Council spokesperson said Council will address
the question of a permit for an event in 2016 “in due course”. Mr Berardo said it was “disappointing” to hear the “local tourism body was not interested to support the Noosa International Food and Wine Festival after 12 years of proven benefit to the region and the local economy, but would work with other partners to continue to strive for successful outcomes for the nation’s premier food, wine and lifestyle event”. The media statement said Mr Berardo was “confident” and remained “hopeful” negotiations with the Queensland State Government (Tourism Events Queensland) would be successful, and said his negotiations with corporate partners were “nearing final stages”. Mr Berardo said he also “continues his plan to repay creditors from personal funds while the negotiations run due process”. Mr McPharlin said while Tourism Noosa offers sponsorship to the Sheraton Noosa for the coming festival as well as sponsorship to 12 other events throughout the year, the new sponsorship deal places no restriction on individuals or organisations to conduct other events. “Tourism Noosa looks forward to working with Noosa Pacific Hotel along with all stakeholders to help ensure the success of this event for the region,” Mr McPharlin said. Sheraton Noosa Resort and Spa were contacted for comment but were unable to response by deadline.

Safe on solid ground John is greeted by wife Suzanne.
Sky high for good time LAST week was long-time local John Smeed’s 80th birthday, but there wasn’t a sponge cake in sight. Naturally a thrill-seeker, John decided to mark the occasion by jumping from a plane at 15,000 feet landing on Coolum beach to the cheer of 30 friends and the popping of champagne. “It was brilliant,” the grandfather said of the jump on 30 September. “It was a perfect day. I like to call it a golden day.” John’s wife Suzanne organised family and friends to be waiting on the beach for John to land, followed by an afternoon of champagne, nibbles and great company. “That was the nice thing, that 30 people came to watch and we had champagne and

nibbles on the beach,” he said. “It was lovely to see so many of our friends wanting to attend my 80th birthday idiocy and the celebration after landing turned out to be even better than having an evening party.” The jump was the first time John had sky dived and he said it was “all cool”. “We had perfect weather and I must admit the first shock of tumbling away from the plane was a bit disorientating but after stabilising, the 200km/h drop was a special, exciting experience and once the parachute opened the quiet smooth decent over the beautiful coastline was memorable,” he said. There is no word yet on how John will celebrate his 81st birthday next year. Bungee jumping, perhaps?
SURPRISE, surprise Tony Wellington is going to run for mayor at the next election - not really as that was the innuendo suggested the day Noel Playford first took office. Tony had always been the man anointed to take the position when Mr Playford finally hung up his robe, after steering the de-amalgamation and in his eyes ‘steading the ship for the first couple of years’. With six months before the polling day, I can guarantee many will be putting their hands up for the plum job. I have pondered over my thoughts, on who I would like to see lead the team. I believe ‘Hey Bill’ Watson is the perfect man to lead my dream team for the future. Bill’s a dead-set local business man, who has first-hand knowledge and experience that would be invaluable. He left Bondi Beach over 40 years ago for a
summer break and has never returned. Ask any visitor, what do you remember about your trip to Noosa. No doubt Hey Bill’s name comes up and always a glowing acknowledgement. I would hate to think how many functions or events Mr Watson has helped over the years and all from a voluntary perspective. He’s been there when there has been no beach, when it rains, and when the beach is packed. In fact, the last few years, he has donned the Santa outfit for the annual Christmas parade. No doubt Bill is a people’s person, which is badly missing in most politicians. I don’t think Mr Wellington has anywhere near the experience needed to juggle the demanding and sometimes personal top job. OK, now let’s look at Bill's new cabinet, Frank Pardon stays as agriculture minister, Joe Jurisevic packs in as sports head, Frank Wilkie will excel in the arts role, and Bob Abbott could look after retirement. But there will need to be some new faces, allow me to suggest Hastings Street’s favourite landlord Ken Morrison heading finance, for-
mer '70s real estate whiz Brendan Foley with tourism, the delightful and very capable Linda Jedynak as events guru, plus former councillor Russell Green could be drafted in as liaison for the Eumundi and Hinterland areas. Now to make sure everyone pulls their weight, I would like to see Sandy Bolton as the overseer to make sure everything stays on course. If any of them need to fly out of town on business, pilot-to-the-stars Perry Taylor is only a call away. While we are on the topic of selection, I notice with great interest the plans for the 2016 International Food and Wine Festival are raising a bit of concern. Previous organiser and the man who made it the success in the first place Jim Berardo has already set the dates for the annual event. It appears 19-22 May is booked, and its makes a lot of sense as it will fit into the scheduled ‘Celebrate the Commonwealth Festival’. The 2018 Games are on in April and what a drawcard this festival will be for the visitors looking for something to do. Until next time.

Take a really close look at this steak. It was seared and branded perfectly for just one minute. Then it was rotated, seared and branded for one more minute. At the time this photograph was taken it had been flipped over and the two minute searing was just beginning on the second side. I had never seen a steak that looked this good or tasted this good.. These steaks come from Weber’s latest Genesis E-330 gas barbecue. The only barbecue pictured here equipped with Weber’s Sear Station™. Cycling challenge will fight childhood cancer A team of 30 whale researchers are back in Peregian to track the great mammals’ southern migration.
Eyes on whales A TEAM of 30 whale researchers from at least nine countries have returned to Peregian in October to track humpbacks as they breach, fin-slap and swim their way back to the Antarctic Ocean on their southern migration. Under the guidance of University of Queensland researcher Dr Michael Noad, the scientists are continuing their work into whale song and behaviour until 19 October. The team has spotters on Emu Mountain and Sunshine Beach plus a grid of hydro phones that wirelessly transmit whale song to the headquarters in Peregian’s Horizon’s Apartments where it is analysed and recorded. The eastern humpback whale population has been increasing steadily since being at near-extinction levels when whale hunting in the southern ocean was discontinued in the early 1960s. Dr Noad said his team’s estimates indicated “healthy" growth in the eastern humpback population from 7500 10 years ago to about 26,000 this year. Previous research from this group has shown males only sing and that the song changes slightly each year. A public information night where the findings will be shared is being planned.
A GROUP of locals has launched a challenge to ride 1500 kilometres throughout the month of October to raise funds to fight kids’ cancer. Jetts Peregian club manager Bek Saultry along with husband and wife team Jay and Lindsay Nowoselsky are taking part in the national Great Cycle Challenge that encourages people of all ages to get on their bikes and ride to fight childhood cancer. According to the organisation, cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia with more than 600 children diagnosed with cancer every year and, sadly, three die each week. All funds raised through the Great Cycle Challenge go directly to the Children’s Medical Research Institute to continue its work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer. Bek said she was inspired to do the challenge to help find a cure and would ride up to two hours per day to reach her 1000km goal by the end of October. So far Bek has ridden more than 100kms and raised more than $1200. Joining Bek are Jetts Peregian members Jay and Lindsay who sadly lost their nine-year-old son to cancer nine years ago. Jay said he and his wife would share the cycling duties to reach

Locals back global march MORE than 80 people took to Eumundi’s main road on Saturday 3 October to protest against the hunting of exotic and at-risk animals throughout the world. Held as part of the Global March for Elephants, Rhinos and Lions, the protest group walked Eumundi’s streets with a motorbike escort through the township. Event organiser Marie-Louise Sarjeant said the group was supported by clapping and cheering from locals and visitors at the Eumundi Markets, which are held every Saturday. “It was wonderful to see passionate children join in enthusiastically and canine support too,” Marie-Louise said. “All over the world, cities took part, and all the Australian cities joined in and Eumundi was put on this global map. We are proud to do this and many wonderful passionate people came to support these poor animals. “It makes me cry with such angry emotions of frustration the cruelty of canned lion hunting. We must get South Africa to ban it, condemn it and stop it.” Marie-Louise said the hunting of animals such as lions and elephants is “brutal” and should be banned. “The killing of elephants has reached epidemic proportions,” she said. “To put this into perspective, every time London’s Big Ben chimes, an elephant is dead and one rhino is killed every nine hours.” Marie-Louise said there was
INBRIEF Keep kids and pets safe SUMMER is almost here, and local police are reminding people not to leave their children or pets in the car unattended at any time. According to the RSPCA, it can take just six minutes for a dog to die when left in a car even on a cool day. Vehicles are made of metal and glass, both heat up quickly and retain heat, creating a deadly environment for children and animals when left in the car. Noosa Heads officer-in-charge Steve McReight said people needed to plan ahead and not leave their children or pets unattended in the car. “You don’t want the fire service or police coming along and smashing your window to retrieve your child from a deadly situation,” he said. Anyone who sees a child left unattended in the car can phone local police on 5440 8111 or, if it is an emergency, phone triple-zero. Phone 1800 ANIMAL if a dog has been left in a car.

LOCAL police are reminding motorists the speed limit on Eumundi Noosa Road has been dropped to 80km/h for the stretch of road. The decision to drop the speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/h for the stretch of road from the Doonan roundabout to Beckman’s Road was presented to council in July this year as part of the Noosa Traffic Advisory and Speed Management committee findings. At the time, Mayor Noel Playford said with the volume of traffic on the road it was rare to get up to the top speed on 100km/h and dropping the speed limit would only take commuters an extra 12 seconds.

FROM last Thursday the new cafe at Cooroy Library has been busy serving up work experience skills, along with great coffee. Run by United Synergies as part of the Coffee United program, the new cafe supports young people to help address barriers to employment and gain valuable work experience. The Coffee United brand of social enterprise cafes was developed by United Synergies in response to young people who face barriers such as leaving school early, homelessness and mental health issues when it comes to finding employment. The first cafe was established in Maroochydore in 2013 at United Synergies’ headspace Maroochydore site and the Cooroy Library cafe is the second site for United Synergies, and was made possible after United Synergies was successful with an application to Noosa Council following their call for a ‘social procurement tender’ at the Cooroy Library cafe site. Noosa Council CEO Brett de Chastel said the council was proud to support such a fantastic initiative. “Providing our young people with training and support when they really need it is very important for the wellbeing of the whole Noosa Shire community, he said. United Synergies CEO Christopher John said the organisation was delighted to work with a range of people. “United Synergies works with a range of vulnerable people in our community to enable them to reach their full potential, he said. “We are delighted to be able to support disengaged local young peo-

LETTERS Tony tribute TONY Wellington is prepared to stand for the position of mayor. He is undoubtedly the best candidate for the job. What wonderful news. Thanks Tony. Meredith Smart, Castaways Beach.
Union argument LUCY Stanton’s letter regarding shipping reform runs the usual Maritime Union arguments and is misinformed and misleading. The facts are that Labor’s union-driven coastal shipping reforms from 2012 have failed - and serious changes are needed to save Australia’s shipping industry. Under Labor, the fleet of major ships registered to operate on the Australian coast fell from 30 ships in 2006-'07 to just 15 in 2013'14, and during the first two years of Labor’s scheme, there was a 63 per cent decline in the carrying capacity of Australian flagged vessels in the coastal trading fleet. That is a shameful legacy, and one that needs urgent correction. An uncompetitive domestic shipping industry has damaged Australia’s industry. It is cheaper to bring sugar from Thailand to Melbourne than to ship it from Mackay. It is cheaper to bring cement from China than transport it around the Australian coast. This government’s coastal shipping reforms are designed to deliver greater choice between shipping companies, which will reduce costs for Australian businesses and open up new opportunities for Australian seamen. That’s why our reforms have been supported by Australian manufacturers, businesses and industry groups such as the National Farmers’ Federation and Minerals Council of Australia. These bodies understand what it takes to create jobs and prosperity - not endless red tape that cruels productivity. We will always need trained seafarers with the right skills to fill critical jobs in the industry, including tug crews, harbourmasters and pilots. Our planned reforms will ensure all ships trading predominantly on the Australian coast will have skilled Australian seafarers on board. Coastal shipping is vital to our national economy and economic security. The current environment will leave us with a national freight task expected to increase by 80 per cent by 2030, but a coastal shipping sector which will only grow 15 per cent in the same timeframe. Without change, most of that extra freight will have to be loaded on to our road and rail systems, adding billions every year to the cost of maintaining hard infrastructure. In short, unless we act now to correct these failings, there will be no Australian flagged coastal shipping and there will be thousands of extra trucks on our roads. Warren Truss, Federal Member for Wide Bay.
Remember the workers I TRUST that on Labour Day (October 5) those Labor Party members and supporters who will be remembering those who struggled and secured decent and fair working conditions in years gone by will also spare a thought for all those workers who, in more recent times, have been priced out of manufacturing and other jobs by the job-destroying demands of presentday trade union governance; a governance that has a different agenda to the successful Hawke/ Kelty industrial relations accord of the 1980s. E.J. Ash, Boreen Point.
Tide will come in I DON'T know if many Australians know the story of King Canute, who thought himself so powerful that he attempted to stop the tide coming in - this is what I feel the Noosa Council is like. I have watched, read and listened with avid interest to all the arguments for and against the Noosa Civic expansion. Either way I am not really bothered, in knowing the fact that at some time in the not too distant future an expansion of shopping and retail will happen if not at Noosa Civic, then somewhere in the vicinity! It is inevitable, and denying this, is like denying the fact that we need more schools, more hospital beds and the Sunshine Highway expanded to take more traffic, for all those tourist we are so keen to invite from across the globe! What really bugs me is one of the main arguments against the expansion. Noosa Junction

is a non-place even after the so-called ‘facelift’, most of the shops are boutique and expensive for mums and dads on holiday with the kids, the majority of the food outlets are at best average, parking is problematical for locals and the place shuts down on a Sunday. So expand the Junction now, and don't wait for the inevitable, when either the Civic gets the go-ahead from a new Noosa Council or a large retail area is authorised by the Sunshine Coast Council. Andrew Bell, Doonan.
Not so strong COUNCILLOR Tony Wellington’s claim that Noel Playford leaves Noosa in a strong fiscal position are not supported by the past end of year capital works schedule which had 22 projects partially completed at a cost of more than $600,000 but not carried over to this year’s capital works schedule for completion. It appears that council is fiscally stressed and unable to complete projects properly due to needs of higher priority projects coupled with lack of funds and staff. Jeff Nuske, Noosa Heads.
Don't print it I JUST read Bob Jarvis’s letter and can’t believe you would print such an offensive piece of nonsense. I know people are entitled to their opinions but surely you should draw a line somewhere. Fran Bate, Noosa.
That time of year IT MUST be that time of the year when certain people agitate via the letters page and editorials, and as expected Bob Jarvis is writing letters on just about everything he can think of, and now we are told he is studying the Koran and espousing certain ideological theories about the Muslim invasion. Now we are into WWIII we are told, there is certainly an uneasiness in parts of the world about what is happening in the Middle East, and in Australia, and I for one have deep reservations of what’s ahead, but why Bob have you decided to study the Koran? Is it for inner peace? To be different? Or are you intending to join them? Do you think this piece of news to the public may assist when you possibly have intentions of putting your name up once again for a council position? If so, wrong council. Sally Platt-Hepworth, Noosa Waters.
An ugly rant THANKS for printing Bob Jarvis’s letter in your Thursday 1 October edition. His wild rant about all the world’s Muslims was truly ugly. It’s always useful to know who the ill-informed are in the community. Thankfully most people are not into conspiracy theories and mad paranoia. It may come as a shock to Mr Jarvis to discover that our closest neighbour, Indonesia, has the highest concentration of Muslims on the planet, almost all of whom are moderates with no evil intent on Mr Jarvis’s mind or property. G. Bright, Noosaville.
Not all the same BOB Jarvis seeks to tar all people of Muslim faith with the same brush. Let’s see what happens when we apply the same logic to Christians. Bob complains that Muslims actively seek to dominate the world with their beliefs. So what have Christian missionaries been doing for centuries, and what are they continuing to do in the South Pacific, sub-Saharan Africa and South America? And are Muslims inherently violent? Think about the many wars and atrocities committed under the name of Jesus, from the Crusades to the Klu Klux Klan. I have Christian friends who represent no threat to me or my lifestyle, yet by the same childish logic that Bob Jarvis uses I should be wary of them becoming neighbours. By the way, I also have friends of the Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist persuasions. Religious beliefs do not dictate character. Every scripture has to be interpreted. Even Buddhists commit atrocities in South East Asia. Racism should be challenged wherever it appears. Michael Rowbotham, Noosa.
10 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 8 October, 2015
A light meal IMAGINE going out to a restaurant for a threecourse set menu at “Playfords restaurant” for example, and being told that there won’t be any dessert and no refund for it either! You would feel pretty ripped off no doubt. That is basically how a lot of Noosa ratepayers are feeling about their council only achieving 63 per cent (two thirds) of their due capital works last financial year. Now that “Playfords” is closing down, there is already talk that “Wellingtons restaurant” won’t have any dessert on the menu either! I guess we will have to wait and see, and hopefully a new council soon will serve the full menu. Kev Fuller, Noosa.
Not such a gas I WRITE because I am disgusted at the behaviour of our only two local auto gas distributors. For several months now, the BP service station at Noosaville at 86.9 cents/litre and the United service station at Doonan at 85.9 cents/litre are overcharging the Noosa motorists by up to 30 per cent. It would be hard not to believe these two operators are in collusion, as LPG has been, for several months now, sold by all service stations from Yandina/Nambour, through to and including the Gold Coast, at less than 70 cents/ litre and in most at 65.9 cents/litre. This means these two operators in our Noosa region are overcharging by approximately 20 cents per litre. I regard this as gouging with a capital “G”! I therefore refuse to purchase any of their products including petrol until they end this dreadful “rip off” of us, their regular customers, and would like to suggest that all of you, who can, where possible, do likewise! B. Crollick, Doonan.
Europe in decline BOB Jarvis, I agree with what you wrote (Noosa Today 1 October) “Europe will plunge into a brutal uncontrollable society again”. Five years ago I read the book America alone: the end of the world as we know it by Canadian author Mark Steyn. He predicted by the turn of the century, Europe will be ruled by Muslims due to demographic decline with low European birth-rates and higher by Muslims. With the enormous influx of refugees into Europa at the moment this prediction will come true much sooner. The Turks always predicted: “We will conquer Europe eventually. The Ottomans were stopped before coming into Vienna, but we are welcomed into Europe as guest workers and we can silently multiply and grow.” The Ottomans were stopped in 1683 before conquering Vienna. They have tried to conquer Europe since 1529. Central Hungary was annexed at that time. No wonder the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban is not very keen about taking Muslim refugees into his country. Also while working at a US Air Base in Libya, the GIs told us: “The next WWIII will be not between the East and West, but between Muslims and the rest of the world.” Angelika Pawlitschek, Noosa.
Traffic on radar AT COUNCIL'S most recent general meeting when the Noosa Civic expansion was being discussed, their traffic consultant said there would be no significant traffic problems until 2026 and possibly 2031. Considering this development application is from the Queensland Investment Corporation we can assume they had factored all contingencies and if there is need of additional infrastructure at a later date, I’m sure state funding could be organised. Also, if QIC’s proposal is outside the town plan, then how did Petrac’s 2007 North Shore development be approved? John Lobb, Peregian Springs.
Damp squib IF NOOSA Today must continue to encourage John Lobb’s trench warfare against Noosa Council, can you please make sure he does actually have some ammunition? The ordnance grade evidence in the latest lob explodes to read “mismanagement of capital works (63 per cent last year and three per cent instead of 16 per cent at end August) has now been compounded by what appears to be some different account-
ing; $4 million in planned projects from June have disappeared.” Got that? Sounds like it could be a bloodbath. Or maybe just hot air. But don’t worry about council because Bob Jarvis has discovered the true menace. After a close reading of the Koran he warns us that moderate Muslims are more dangerous than radical Muslims, seeing as how they are not only sneaky but they lie heaps. In fact, it’s about time we all woke up or we might find ourselves forced to drive on the other side of the road. Or convert and stay on the left, was it? Or worse, lose at bridge to those sneaky fidels? WW3 for sure, then. Any paper has a responsibility to be clear, balanced and relevant if it is to serve the community during times of change. Magnifying distortions and spreading internet-derived xenophobia do not serve. Chris Hindmarsh, Tinbeerwah.
That's progress WE ARE being told how the world is progressing through the use of modern technology and how clever and so much more advanced we are than our forefathers. If so how come a stolen piece of plastic has more available monetary value than a stolen $100 note? E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.
The road to war I LIKE Bob Jarvis’s summation of “us” as infidels and his inference that radical Muslims use the moderate Muslim, as a wedge to infiltrate a country before taking it over. This can be done by the use of a very high birth rate or an outright “uncontrolled“ flow of refugees. All pushed by our “intelligence agencies” destabilising the Middle East to achieve this exact end. However I feel the need to take his point just a bit further. The “West” has had separation of church and state for centuries, Islam has yet to have its reformation. Sharia is both a religion and a form of government. We on the other hand have at the least Christian morality which acts as a moderating influence even for politicians. As Christians with the separation of church and state we are capable of rational discussion with people who disagree with us and I believe that this search for the objective truth has placed western societies into the predominant place they are today. It is in the Christian spirit whereby we allow ourselves to be called “infidels” yet take no offence, simply turning the other cheek, to do otherwise often leads to war. Geoff Lewis, Doonan.
Misinformed THERE is a belief on the Sunshine coast that Noosa residents have been misinformed about the poor state of council’s finances, and that, this same council is putting pressure on the local papers to only publish “positive” stories. But I do believe personally the majority of Noosa ratepayers are fully aware of their council’s incompetence. Keep in mind that a lot of the wealthy retirees living in Noosa were once very successful businesspeople, and will know that this council is struggling. I do also believe that the reason why they are voting for this council is rather simple: the fear that a new council, hell-bent on development will destroy this little piece of paradise. Noosa Council has been very efficient in brainwashing locals into believing that they are the only ones who truly care about Noosa’s environment. In six months’ time, there will be new council elections, and it is very important that any new candidates, outside the existing ones, show the locals there is a real alternative. A council who can manage a fine balance between conservation and development, taking care of the environment, while keeping in touch with progress, a council who will reinstate confidence in businesses and investors, and above all a council who will create jobs for our youth. Under the present council, business development and investment is at its lowest ever, youth unemployment (46 per cent) is the highest in the country, and the tourism industry is only two wet seasons away from bankruptcy. Surely Noosa deserves better. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Capturing the wonder of birth PREGNANCY, birth and special moments with your children can come and go in an instant. But, in such a fastpaced world, parents are starting to take the time to capture and cherish these fleeting moments through a growing photography movement specialising in maternity and birth photography. For some, the thought of a camera and photographer in the birthing suite can be confronting, but mother-of-three and former world kiteboarding champion Rebecca Colefax says it’s something mumsto-be are asking for. “My mother once said to me, blink and you’ll miss it,” Rebecca said. “I absolutely have to agree. I look at my little 9-year-old and I think, my gosh I blinked. It’s amazing how time goes so fast through the busyness of life and everyday activity.” Rebecca said her entire life changed when she became a mother for the first time, choosing to give away her successful kiteboarding career to focus on family-life. “It’s so amazing to be a mother. It really changes you,” she said. “I love that I can now share my passion with my children.” Rebecca, who shot her first wedding on film when she was 19, said birth photography was all about capturing and documenting the passing moments in what can be a highly emotional time. “I love capturing moments, moments that are just so fleeting you would miss it,” she said. “I love that connection the photographs trap. “Sometimes it can get intense when mum is entering a state of stress or things aren’t going well, but I’m like a fly on the wall. “My previous clients have often said to me they didn’t even know I was there. The women and their partners are so focussed on being together through their journey, they don’t even notice me.”
From pregnancy to birth, the first 48 hours to the first few weeks, they're all moments that fly by so fast. Picture: REBECCA COLEFAX PHOTOGRAPHY

Birth photography offers parents a chance to look back and relive the experience of birth. “I take the photos so families can enjoy the moment. Dad doesn’t have to worry about picking up the camera to try and get some photos for mum,” she said. “They can relax and be together and enjoy that moment of connection.” Rebecca has photographed many births and said, while some mothers can feel pressure to have a certain type of birth, every birth is a whole new experience. “Every single birth I go to is different and every single journey is different,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how you birth, it’s not important. It’s only important the baby is well and the mother is well and their connection is growing.” Rebecca said she understood that birth photography
Photographer Rebecca Colefax said birth photography is all about capturing the fleeting moments often missed throughout the chaos of birth. wasn’t for everyone, but parents could choose to have the first 48 hours of baby’s life, a mother’s pregnancy or the first few precious weeks photographed instead. “I love pregnancy photo sessions as it allows the mother-to-be to realise just how beautiful she is in a time when she’s probably not feeling that way,” she said. “But what I love most is that in today’s world, everyone has a choice. It’s great we can choose to have a birth photographed if we want,” she said. “I think it’s great we have the power of choice.”

Steps to ease the stress IT’S back to school and for many senior students that means the start of final exams and for many parents that means the start of stressful times. While exams can be allconsuming and stressful, there are some ways parents can help their children feel prepared, calm and ready to tackle the coming exam period. Remember it’s not the end of the world Getting good grades can definitely make it easier for your child to get on at school and get into future study courses that can lead to a good job, but there are also many others pathways to work available these days if your child doesn’t achieve high grades. Universities such as the University of the Sunshine Coast offer courses such as Tertiary Pathway Preparation (TPP) which prepares students for university study, plus a host of extra courses to help students get into the course they really want. Be prepared and get in touch with your local university to see what other options are available if your child doesn’t receive the OP score they were hoping for. Create a learning environment While not every home will have a dedicated study nook or home office, finding
As final exams creep closer parents can help their children be prepared for the coming stress and anxiety. somewhere quiet, calm and free of distractions for your child to study will help them stay focussed on their exam preparations. Get busy now If your child gets started early before exams then you won’t be kept up with allnight study groups and tired teenagers asking you to reread their essay at 3am. Encouraging your child to put in one hour of good-quality study every night will pay off when it comes closer to exam time. Eat and sleep Many people think coffee in massive supply with improve study, but as a stimu-
lant coffee can make people feel more alert but reduce concentration and increase irritability. The best option is to stick to healthy snacks such as nuts and fruit, plus nutritious meals throughout the day to keep energy levels and concentration high. A good night’s sleep is just as important so encourage your teenagers to keep to a regular sleeping pattern so they feel fresh and ready for learning the next morning. And remember to allow your child to be rewarded for their hard work. A break from study and chores to spend time with friends will have them feeling refreshed and ready to continue study.

Last year's event attracted more than 5000 people to the Lions Club of Peregian Christmas Carols at Peregian Beach park.
Disney theme for golden carols LAST year more than 5000 people packed the Peregian Beach park for the Lions Club of Peregian Christmas carols, and this year promises to be even bigger and better. The Lions Club of Peregian is proud to present a night of magic and wonder with the Once Upon a Christmas Carol musical performance, starring the Doo Wop Dolls. The Disney-themed night has been carefully choreographed by local music director Melissa Isles. A fireworks display is set to light up the night sky. Santa will also make an appearance for all good girls and boys in what is now the Carol’s 50th year. But none of this will be possible without a host of lo-
cal and business sponsors to help the Lions Club of Peregian make a magical night come true for local children. The Lions Club of Peregian is calling for sponsors to help support the event and make the night possible. Believed to cost almost $20,000 to stage the carols, the Peregian Lions Club said they needed all the help they could get from local businesses who wanted to help support such a great community event. “As a professional event, we have to hire stage, sound, lighting, buy fireworks, right down to the port-a-loos,” event organisers said. “Last year, it cost around $19,000 and that is too much of an outlay for a service club like ours.” Event organisers said
sponsoring the Christmas carols was a great opportunity for local businesses to be involved with the community, plus advertise their logo and business to over 5000 locals. Anyone who would like to help support this fantastic community event can contact Sharon Stevens on 0417 227 254 or email Sharon. stevens@westnet.com.au or peregianlions@hotmail. com. The Lions Club of Peregian’s Once Upon a Christmas Carol will be held at the Peregian Beach park next to the Surf Life Saving Club on Monday 21 December from 6.30pm. Entry to the event is by a gold coin donation and a no-alcohol policy applies for the family-friendly event.
Cakes of cheer for Christmas EVERY November Noosa Today launches the Christmas Cheer Campaign aimed at brightening the holiday season for the local community, but this year we have started early. Noosa Today has just received 200 Lions traditional Christmas cakes and we’re excited to not only hand them out to local business owners in the community but also help to support important local Lions projects. The Lions Christmas Cake program has been a major fund-raiser for Lions projects in Australia since 1965 and has helped raise over $50 million. Money raised from the sale of the cakes is donated back into the community, as well as used to help local projects throughout different regions in Australia. The recent order of Christmas cakes was delivered by the Lions Club of Noosa Heads, who keep busy throughout the year with a host of local projects. To order your Lions Christmas Cake from your local Lions Club phone Peter of Tewantin Lions on 5474 1297, Chic of Noosa Heads Lions on 5455 4106 or 0414 710 410 or Fran from Peregian Lions on 5471 2742. and re-vegetate Heritage Park in Tewantin, to improve connectivity for birds and other wildlife and enhance the biodiversity of the area. Many hands will enable planting of more native species in the park, improving habitats for some of our endangered flora and fauna. Caring for bushland is not just a healthy, outdoor, physical activity, it also provides mental stimulation for the community, both young and old. While learning about plants, animals and

Only three homesites remain in the Elysium Noosa community.
Last chance for land at Elysium the finish line at Elysium Noosa, with all but three homesites in the community now sold out. Total sales in the development, which borders Weyba Creek and Noosa Springs Golf Course, have topped $49 million, with AVJennings confirming there will be no further land releases once the homesites in the final stage have sold out. The final homesites are priced from $330,000 and range from 651 square metres to 792 square metres, with some fronting parks and nature reserves.
AVJennings state general manager Rod Chadwick said the overall scarcity of land available in the heart of Noosa would drive buyer demand, leading to a quick sellout of all remaining lots at Elysium. “Buyers need to recognise that this is not only their final chance to call Elysium home, but also one of their last opportunities to buy land within easy reach of all Noosa has to offer," he said. “Elysium has been extremely successful because it is so centrally located - with a creek and golf course at its doorstep, and the famed Hastings Street retail precinct, Noosa

Danny’s in it for the laughs THE popular Sit Down Comedy Club will be back at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club on Friday night for another evening of side-splitting laughter. Headlining the show is Brisbane-based comedian Danny McGinlay, who has been performing stand-up since he was 16. Hailing from Melbourne, Danny has performed in London, New York, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and all over Australia, but has enjoyed a regular gig in Brisbane since 2004. “The Paddo Tavern is one of my favourite clubs to play in the world,” he said. “The Queensland audiences are so much fun. They’re proper Australians. All they need is beer, sunshine and a laugh.” Danny will be supported by fellow comedians Ting Lim and Joe Shaffer, with Peter Grose as MC for the night. Peter has been in the business of making people laugh for over 16 years and has previously performed in Los Angeles, New York and all over Australia. Known as the thinking-man’s comic, Peter delivers a fast-paced combination of comedy, music and dramatic skills to give the audience a very slick, very funny performance. Danny McGinlay, along with Peter Grose, Ting Lim and Joe Shaffer, will perform at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club on Friday 9 October, from 8pm. Tickets are $15 for members and $18.50 for non-members. Phone the Surf Club reception on 5447 5491 to book your tickets.

Stocker’s work includes 10 acrylic paintings of photorealistic lips that have been described as an intense, voluptuous and amorous sensation with tremendous depth. This is Stocker’s first solo show in Australia and follows on from a recent show in Switzerland this year. Spinal decompression is a computer controlled, intermittent traction that has been shown to be effective in caring for a range of issues like back and neck pain, facet joint jamming and nerve pinching.
Chattanooga Triton DTS Spinal Decompression System.
High-tech spine traction By TANIA PHILLIPS LAGUNA Bay Chiropractic at Noosaville is excited to let everyone know about their latest chiropractic technology - spinal decompression. Doctor Travis Davis of Laguna Bay Chiropractic believes it is the only chiropractic office in the area to offer this technology and one of less than a handful of offices in Australia. “Spinal decompression is a computer-controlled, intermittent traction that has been shown to be effective in caring for a range of issues like back and neck pain, facet joint jamming and nerve
pinching. Where spinal decompression really shines is in the relief of nerve pain like sciatica that is often caused by a disc bulge,” Dr Davis said. “The secret to why spinal decompression is so effective, compared to “old school“ traction or even inversion tables is in the computer controlled intermittent traction head. The software allows for the finest possible adjustments in pressure as well as provide multiple pull patterns, so we can find one that is effective for each individual patient.” He said modern spinal decompression works by applying a light traction to the spine at a very specific amount of pressure.
“Once this pull has been achieved, the machine holds this pressure for a preset amount of time and then lets off about half of the pressure before pulling again,” he said. “This pumping style of traction decompresses the bulged disc by relieving the pressure within the disc and gently pulling the disc away from the nerve, thereby taking pressure off the nerve and relieving the pain. “Sometimes, people are nervous about trying something new, and I jokingly tell them that spinal decompression isn’t some old medieval torture device! It’s a new, gentle and effective way to relieve nerve pain like sciatica to possibly
prevent the necessity for spine surgery.” Dr Davis said he had used spinal decompression in all of his practices in the USA, and absolutely love the results he got from it. “In addition to spinal decompression, our office uses computer assisted adjusting and many other modern approaches to chiropractic care,” he said. You can learn more about spinal decompression by going to their website at www.lagunabaychiropractic.com, find them at Laguna Bay Chiropractic, 205/90 Goodchap Street, Noosaville phone 07 5474 1473 or Email: Chiroinnoosa@gmail.com.
It’s all in the diet IF YOU'RE having trouble getting your body bikini-ready for the coming summer season, local naturopath Deb Roberson might be able to help. With more than 22 years’ experience, Deb said she had always had a weight loss program in her clinic, but none had been as effective as the latest version of the HcG diet. Deb said it was common for users of the diet to lose about 2kg a week and said she always made sure health came first for her clients. “(The diet) is simple, but it’s not a silver bullet,” Deb said. “You will need to be in the right mindset and you will need to adjust your eating habits.” The diet system helps users learn which foods to eat to maintain a lean, healthy body. To find out more about the HcG diet, phone Deb on 5447 6380.

Lifting your effort Looking to get fit for summer? Owner and operator of You First PT Tyrone Saul shares his tips on how to get that summer-ready body.
Looking to lose weight and tone-up? A combination of cardio and weight training is best.
“EXPERTS suggest a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise can not only help with losing weight, but can prevent loss of muscle tissue, also known as muscle atrophy, plus other preventable diseases. “According to Dr Michael Colgan, author of Why You Should Weight Train, the average female loses 3.6kg of muscle and gains 10kg of body fat between the ages of 20 and 40, while men lose almost a quarter of their lean mass between 20 and 80 years of age. “Recent studies show running, cycling and other aerobic sports aren’t enough to prevent
lean tissue loss. What’s needed is a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise that will help maintain lean tissue while also increasing cardio fitness. “According to studies, women who maintained a high frequency and volume of resistance training found the training significantly impacted fat loss especially in post-menopausal women. “The 2010 study found resistance training is a viable long-term method to prevent weight gain and “unfavourable” changes in body composition, with both men and women expected
to benefit from aerobic and resistance training, such as lifting weights, with both shown to diminish body fat and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. “Despite the overwhelming evidence that lifting weights assists in losing weight, it is a reminder to us that resistance and aerobic training are feasible options for us as individuals to maintain or improve health outcomes irrespective of weight loss.”
Biting more than you should chew Frustrated with trying to lose weight? Naturopath Yolanda Falivene shares her top tips for losing weight this season. WEIGHT loss is not just about willpower, but eating a low-fat, low-calorie diet - and exercising is sometimes not enough. I see many people who are inadvertently eating a combination of foods, often healthy foods, that actually slow down their metabolism by upsetting the delicate hormone balance of their body. Symptoms such as midriff fat, low energy, bloating, cravings, mood swings, hot flushes, difficulty sleeping and poor concentration can result.
Many weight loss or meal replacement programs are based on restricting calories, but this type of weight loss usually results in some muscle loss, not just fat loss. When the correct food is consumed in correct portions hormonal balance is restored, your metabolism improves, cravings disappear, energy lifts and fat is burned. Another benefit is that only fat, not muscle, is lost so that your weight won’t rebound when you finish. What’s more, your diges-
tion improves, memory sharpens and your skin looks younger. Conditions such as an underactive thyroid, menopause, insulin resistance and diabetes - all due to hormonal imbalances - can also contribute to the building up of fat stores in the body and are influenced by the type of foods eaten. With weekly visits and monitoring, I can give you the support and motivation you may need to stay on track - you can succeed in your goals to lose weight and keep it off. 1201614-ACM41-15
Naturopath Yolanda Falivene has a special interest in helping people with weight issues and hormone imbalances. At Noosaville Natural Health, Yolanda uses modern equipment including the 3-D body scan to determine underlying causes. With Bicom Bioresonance, food intolerances and compromised organs are treated, facilitating your recovery to optimum health. For more information, phone 5470 2408.

Fun, food and friends on trail ALMOST two years ago, a handful of Noosa locals decided to eat their way through Noosa one restaurant at a time. The group named the Noosa Restaurant Trail meets every second Wednesday and the 60 members are about to celebrate their 50th dinner. Group co-organiser Kerry Finch said between 20 and 30 members usually attended the dinners, held in different restaurants throughout Noosa. “We are not elitist or ageist, with members (both single and couples) aged between 30 and 75, having dined at a range of local eating places, from burger bars to some of the most expensive restaurants in the area,” she said. “We love supporting local businesses, and they have been very welcoming. A booking for 25 people on a Wednesday night makes a real difference to their takings.” By exploring restaurants they may not have been to before, the members of the group are discovering new favourites, to which they return time and again bringing others with them. The group ensures they have a mix of cuisines and
price points so that as many people as possible will find a dinner that suits them. “We know that not every-

Mangoes mean sweet relief WHEN it comes to culinary delights, warm weather can only mean one thing - mango season. The delicious, sweet fruits are now in full supply throughout local supermarkets, roadside stalls and Farmers’ Markets across the state. While the first trays of mangoes sold for around $100 each, you can now expect to pay about $2.90 per fruit in major supermarkets
and often cheaper at roadside stalls and farmers’ markets as the season progresses. The fragrant fruit can be eaten in a number of ways from simply cutting the cheeks into cubes and diving straight in to grilling the flesh on a hot barbecue or adding to proteins such as chicken for a traditional mango chicken dish served with rice. For a quick boost in the morning or to beat sugar
cravings, try a simple mango smoothie with milk, ice and mango in a blender or if you’re out to impress friends, try a mango, macadamia and avocado salad as the perfect accompaniment to grilled chicken breast. The benefit of the mango also reaches beyond the kitchen, with the fruit packing a nutrient-rich punch of dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals, and is a good source of potassium.
A simple mango, milk and ice smoothie is refreshing, healthy and will help beat sugar cravings. Pour the mix into icy-pole moulds for a healthy treat for the kids over summer. We love mango season!

Understandably, this love is usually attributed to the nuts' transcendent creaminess, plump buttery taste and wickedly crunchy texture. Not to mention, Macadamias are rich in good monounsaturated

Anne at a Community Action Day with the QLD Rural mascot Blazer.
On the road for fire advice By ANDREW BELL HI Folks, well for this foray into the life of the Doonan Rural Fire Brigade we have concentrated on some of our other volunteers who, while not being in the thick of things all the time, do a most valuable job. I hope you find it informative. “Doonan 91 - mobile on VCE business in local area, crew of two”. That’s the radio call to Firecom from Anne and Kerry as they head out from the Doonan Fire Station to a property advice visit nearby. Anne Schofield and Kerry Hermence are both firefighters with the Doonan Rural Fire Brigade and both of them are volunteer community educators (VCE). VCEs are members of their local brigade who educate the community about bushfire safety and work with local fire wardens to help locals get ready for the coming bushfire season. Since the tragedy of the Victorian bushfires in 2009, rural fire agencies around Australia have revised some
of the ways we respond to fire and how we can assist landholders and communities to better protect themselves in the future. In Queensland, this meant new arrangements for fire danger periods, new warning systems and better ways of planning to minimise the risk to life and property - all part of Australia’s national message about bushfire safety Prepare. Act. Survive. QLD’s Rural Fire Brigades comprise of more than 1400 Rural Fire Brigades and more than 35,000 volunteer firefighters and support members - all focused on protecting the 93 per cent of the state’s land area which is rural QLD. Anne and Kerry do presentations, displays, demonstrations, ‘street meets’ and property visits to promote the Prepare. Act. Survive message. Trained and supported by the RFSQ, they provide expert advice on what people need to do to prepare their family and home, how to act if a bushfire approaches and how to survive a bushfire. VCEs also have a key role during fire emergencies. They may doorknock their local area, provide public ad-
vice at community meetings or even act in a media liaison role at an incident. The VCE program is unique to Queensland but its success since 2010 in carrying the message about bushfire safety and assisting locals to reduce fire risk is being watched by fire services around the country. Rural Fire Brigades cannot fulfil their mission to protect life and property without the co-operation of their local community to reduce fire risk in advance of the fire season. This season looks to be no different with late rain, high fuel loads and rapidly-drying vegetation likely to increase our fire risk. Anne and Kerry stand ready to help locals learn more about bushfire safety, whether they have lived in a rural area a long time or have moved here for a ‘tree change’ away from the suburbs. If local landholders, business or community groups would like a visit from a VCE to deliver a presentation or provide information on preparing for this fire season, they can contact Anne on 0497 337 017 or call the RFSQ Caloundra Area Office on 5420 7517.

Guards busy for the holidays Between the
flags RON LANE
FOR our brothers in arms the lifeguards the school holidays have indeed proved a busy time. At peak times the lifeguards estimated that some 5000 people packed on to Noosa's Main Beach and for the three men on duty their experience was sorely tested. Last week northerlies and flash rips on Main Beach caused troubles with 18 people rescued. Also a total of 84 first aid cases were attended to. “With the big crowds we have certainly been kept busy,” Adam McKane, Senior Life Guard, said. “Apart from the rescue work we also attended to three call-outs in the National Park. In these cases we work in support of the ambulance by taking them into the park via the ATV. This vehicle enables us to get rescue teams in much quicker when emergencies occur and back-up is called for.” McKane, a veteran with some 15 years' experience on Noosa Shire beaches, went on to say, “The team work between the ambulance, lifesavers, lifeguards and back-up groups from within the police force has never been better. This enables us to provide top class beach safety.” On Saturday night members of the Marcoola Emergency Response Group were called out when a 13-year-old boy from the Twin Waters area was reported missing. With lifesavers
assisting with beach search, water police doing search patterns and Polair Helicopter, also performing sweeps of the area every effort to find the boy was made with all teams working from 8.30pm till 1.30am. Happy to relate that at 6.30am Sunday the youth was found wandering in the Twin Waters area. This incident once again reinforces the fact that when emergencies arise on our stretch of coast that we have response groups on call that are equal to any in the state. At Sunshine Beach lifesavers were called to attend to a lady with suspected spinal injuries and once the patient was stabilised she was transported to Nambour Hospital. No water incidents occurred but patrol members responded to several minor first aid cases. On Monday evening the Sunshine Club held their start of the season barbecue which was well attended and several awards were handed out to members in recognition of outstanding patrol work last season. Lifesavers on patrol at Noosa's Main Beach reported record crowds but with calm seas and safe bathing no problems apart from minor first aid occurred. With the school holidays now over 200 students from the Peregian Springs State School on Tuesday attended a training session at Noosas Main Beach. The students, all from Years 5 and 6 were under the supervision of Peregian Springs Physical Education Teacher Cameron Hutchins. “Last year we were here with Years 6 and 7 and it was very successful,”Hutchins said. “Our students will undergo training in areas such as swimming, boogie boards, iron person
The Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club Nipper's first day back on the beach. It was a beautiful day for the under 6 to under 14 Nippers as they took to the clear blue water. Picture: DONNA FREY and nipper boards. I have worked with the Noosa Education Officer Greg McLaughlin several times and find that the program is first class, and our students really enjoy it.” The sessions are run by a team of qualified lifesavers from the Noosa Club with nine Surf Education Instructors supervising their every move. Thunder opens season with a bang By RANDALL WOODLEY THIS year the Tewantin Noosa Thunder Club has more than 120 players registered to play in junior teams, ranging from under 10s to Under 16s. This is 20 more players than last season. Matches are played each Saturday morning at the club’s grounds at McKinnon Drive, Tewantin. Practice is held every Tuesday and Thursday (4pm to 5.30pm) at Read Park. The season started well with both the Under 16 teams, the 12As and the two Under 14 teams winning their matches. Under 16As started their season with a good win over a Maroochydore side. The opposition team compiled a competitive score of 3-136 off their 30 overs. In reply, TNT made 5-143. The highlights of the innings was a quick-fire 19 from Grayson
Matthews and a 90-run partnership between Euan Buxton (33) and Alexander Bennett (64no) In the Under 16Bs, the TNT won their match against Cooroy playing away. They dismissed Cooroy for 40 runs after 20 overs. Top bowlers were Luke Smalley 2-1 and Cody Wright 2- 4. TNT ended the day winning comfortably by 77 runs. Under 12As started the season on a winning note, defeating Buderim on their home ground. TNT bowling first were able to dismiss their opposition for 75. Best bowlers were Ben Stewart 2-5 and Harry Dunning 2-9. TNT batted strongly and finished on 2-127 to win by 52 runs. Both the Under 14 teams also registered wins in their respective matches. Meanwhile, the four senior teams playing two-day matches ended the first day with mixed results.
The firsts playing at Caloundra toiled all day to dismiss the home team for 230. Stand out bowler for TNT was Michael Perry with 5-39. At stumps, the TNT were 3-30 with a lot of work to do next Saturday if they are to get first innings points. Seconds, playing at home, the TNT team lost the toss and were sent into bat by Caloundra. Ben Gear, making his debut for the club batted extremely well for his 51. A solid 60-run partnership between Ben and Jason Toohey helped the score to look respectable, before Ben Gear was dismissed. At stumps, TNT were 8-177 with Jason 41no and Robbie McGhee 16no. The Thirds team travelled to Glasshouse. Winning the toss, TNT decided to bat first on what appeared to be a good wicket. However, after a "pretty dismal batting performance” the captain’s words, the innings ended on 120.
Only Phil Drescher 26, Jonno Reynolds 24 and Kent Officer 22no troubled the scorers. Glasshouse finished the day on 5-65, so the game is certainly there for the taking when it resumes next Saturday. Fifths playing at Dale Officer Oval against Palmwoods, the team came into the match with a newlook team. Palmwoods won the toss and sent the home side into bat. Bowling tightly and with plenty of movement the Palmwood’s team dismissed TNT for 44. The only batsman to reach double figures was Rupert Kain (11). Palmwoods batted with more care but the TNT team were able to restrict them to 90 runs (all out). Best bowling figures for TNT were Euan Buxton, three wickets and Harry Wilkinson and Joe Jurisevic with two each. Next Saturday both teams will be playing for an outright result.

High standard of bouts By RON LANE WITH some 19 amateur boxing clubs from all over Queensland converging on Noosa District State High School Cooroy on Saturday night, it was bound to be a great success. The occasion was the young guns Amateur Boxing Tournament sponsored by the Impact Boxing Academy of Cooroy. With a full program of 31 fights, ranging in divisions from 34 kg to 91, the 420 supporters in attendance certainly witnessed a great night of boxing. However, the most pleasing aspect of the evening was the high standard of the bouts and for this the coaches can take a big bow. President of Boxing Queensland Incorporated Ann Tindall said, “There is a lot of talent here tonight. In our sport, it’s hard to keep the young in the gyms for constant training for there is so much to offer in outside activities. Our success overseas in the World Titles has, over the years, been getting better, so tournaments like this are very important. Tindall, who is in her second term as president, started officiating as a judge and referee in 1992. With this amount of experience, it is easy to understand why this lady commands such respect in what has always been a male-dominated sport. There were several great fights during the evening, but the bout between Ben Cameron-Hands of Impact Boxing Academy and Michael Johnson of the Matrix club was without a doubt one of the highlights. Weighing
in at 48kg these 13-year-old contestants gave a display of boxing skills well beyond their years. In round one, moving in with good combinations of short snappy punching, Johnson started to dictate terms. However, Cameron-Hands with great footwork and his repeated switching from orthodox stance to southpaw evened things up. Round two saw it as anyone's fight until a short snappy right hand from Johnson put his opponent down for the compulsory eight count. This plus a compulsory eight standing count and it was Johnson's round. Round three, with the crowd on its feet, again saw Johnson moving forward, but Cameron-Hands continued to show great footwork and counter punching. However, Johnson's aggressive style and the second round knockdown, from which his opponent never fully recovered, saw him get the nod. It was in the opinion of many ringsiders, that it was anyone's fight. With so many young women now turning to the sport, Indianah Hiebluem from the Sunshine Coast and Chantelle Hissey from Deception Bay fought a bout that left no doubt as to the ability and determination of our young women. After a close fight, Hiebluem got the decision. This and several other bouts contested by girls, clearly suggest that girls boxing is definitely to be taken seriously. To promoter and coach Mark Evans of Impact Boxing Academy and his workforce, a great event for the future of local amateur boxing.

Spring’s in the air all over By JACK MANGROVE WITH the spring upon us, fishing has really fired up in the river, off the beach and, of course, offshore. Good numbers of flathead have been caught around the first lake area trolling 60-100mm deep diving lures, give the River2sea live minnow a go, as these have a great action perfect for attracting a large lizard. If you are fishing soft plastics, give the I Fish Squidgies, they have a realistic look and have been developed with Australian conditions in mind. Bream and quality whiting have been on the prowl in the lower reaches of the river on small surface lures like the River2Sea
Skinny Dog and baits like fresh live worms and peeled prawns and Yabbies. Great-sized flathead have been caught at the river mouth drifting pilchard baits and live baits on a run out tide and the change of the tide. There has been some goodsized giant trevally herding up bait in the two Woods Bays early morning and late afternoon. They have been responding well to surface lures like the Zerek Poparazzi. A little later in the day, give the Fuse Pulse Vibes a go as the fish will be sitting a little deeper. Offshore, things have been a bit average with the wind being up most of last week, but for those that got out on the weekend the weather played the game and a
great selection of fish were taken. Sunshine was one of the reefs high on the hit list with some pan-sized snapper, cobia and sweetlip all on the menu. North reef was also another popular one with anglers; cobia, sweetlip, pearl perch and the parrot featured highly. The larger boat again made the best of the weather and headed to the bank and were well rewarded with some nice-sized snapper and pearlies. On the beach, whiting, swallow tail dart, and small tailor and bream have all been inhabiting the gutters. If you are up for a night fish, large baits with heavy sinkers are the perfect way to attract a large jew that have been inhabiting the same area.

Adaptive surfing comes of age Life of
Victory lap for Australia’s Mark “Mono” Stewart. Picture: ISA
brine PHIL JARRATT
MY OLD mate and sometime sparring partner Fernando Aguerre, founder of the Reef footwear company with his brother Santiago, has done a lot of good during his long reign as president of the International Surfing Association. Although I’ve been a critic of his concentration of world title events in Central and South America, and his FIFA-like tactics in the long march to the Olympics, there is no doubt that this energetic, fun-loving Peruvian has his heart in the right place, and with Japan’s Olympic committee last week giving the nod to surfing for Tokyo 2020, it looks like he might go down in history as the man who turned our little pastime into an Olympic sport, for better or for worse. But nothing Fernando has done, or will do, at the ISA will surpass his championing of adaptive (or disabled, if you want to be politically incorrect) surfing. Last week, thanks to Fernando’s hard work and the financial support of Bob Hurley (another champion in my book) the inaugural ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championships were held at La Jolla Shores, below the Scripps Institute in North County, San Diego. Surfers from 18 countries competed in four disciplines - prone, assist, stand and upright - with Byron Bay’s one-legged phenom, 52-year-old Mark “Mono” Stewart taking the gold in the standing event. Paraplegic Jesse Billauer took out the assist division. Mono said: “It’s a dream come true. I think every day I’ve had a tear in my eye seeing people who are so dedicated and love the ocean as much as I do. I’ve been waiting 35 years for this event, but I now know that the sky is the limit with adaptive surfing. The future is in the hands of all the young people we’ve seen here this week. I can’t wait to see what happens next.” I haven’t seen Mono surf, but our Noosa Festival of Surfing media director Tommy Leitch interviewed him recently and reports that he is an inspirational character who will take on any wave, including some doubleoverhead, inside-out barrels during a recent Mentawais trip. His ambition is to create a high performance centre for disabled athletes in the Byron region. Following on from the inspirational visit of Brazil’s blind surfer Derek Rabelo to this year’s festival, we are hoping to have Mono as a special guest next March.
I have seen Jesse Billauer surf, in a demo with Kelly Slater at the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles a few years back, and he blew my mind. I’ve also had the privilege of sharing a few sessions in the Maldives with shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton. Beth surfs better with one arm than most of us do with two, and she was so adept during that trip that she and Layne Beachley conducted coaching classes for young Muslim girls who enjoyed their first surfs fully-clothed from head to toe. I’ll never forget watching Beth push a young girl onto a wave with her good arm, then launch herself onto the same wave so that she could be right beside her at the other end, since the girl couldn’t swim. The Noosa Heads Surf Club has its fantastic Seahorse program, and the surf festival has long been a supporter of the Sunshine Coast

branch of the Disabled Surfers Association, but the World Adaptive Championships have taken this to a whole new level. Good on you, Fernando, and good on you, all 69 competitors. Everyone’s a winner, baby I suppose you could call Tony Wellington a quiet achiever. Having worked with him on the National Surfing Reserve committee over the past 18 months, I’ve developed a great respect for the way the councillor (and surfer, and great photographer) goes about his business. He is mostly serious, dedicated, methodical and conscientious, but he does have a devilish sense of humour and a fun side too. I had a beer with him at the Sheraton’s River Bar just a few hours after he’d declared his run for mayor on social media, which was a fairly uncharacteristic thing for him to do (using social media, that is, not having a beer) and he confessed as much with a chuckle. Later that evening at a Tourism Noosa function, I also had a chat with Councillors Frank Pardon, Frank Wilkie and Sandy Bolton, all of whom seem very likely to run for mayor next year too. It’s an embarrassment of riches, really, because all of them are doing a splendid job for Noosa, despite what you read from half a dozen bored people on the letters page. I’m not going to declare my hand until I hear their policies, but it’s good to know we can’t lose, no matter who gets up. What a grand final, by golly, by jingo I reckon that was the best NFL grand final
I’ve ever seen, from Barnesy and Mossy trading licks to the tear in Johnathon Thurston’s eye. I confess I was a bit tired and emotional by the final whistle, but it had been a big day! A few hours earlier I enjoyed a great lunch at Sails on a perfect day with TV mates Brian Walsh (top dog at Foxtel) and Lorraine Willison, and the conversation inevitably turned to our mutual friend Mike Gibson, whose memorial service Walshy had attended a couple of days before. In fact Walshy brought me a copy of the tribute program, shaped as a wraparound cover of Gibbo’s beloved Daily Telegraph, which was where we first met a hell of a long time ago. Later on, I worked with the revered sportswriter and cricket legend Ian Chappell in the early days on Nine’s Wide World of Sports. In fact we did a book together on the 50 greatest sportsmen and women of the television age. Gibbo never quite forgave me for leaving Rocket Rod Laver out. During the years I was at Playboy magazine Gibbo, Chappelli, my assistant editor Neil Jameson and I used to get together (often at the Mosman Rower’s) to decide on Australia’s best beers of the year. It always took a long time to decide, and Gibbo would be running at 10 or 12 by gollies and by jingos to the sentence by the end. Always a man for the underdog, he would have loved to see the Cowboys get up, by golly.

Ray White gets on (long)board THE Noosa Festival of Surfing is only months away and event organisers have announced the Women’s Pro division will be back in 2016, thanks to the generosity of Ray White Noosa. The Women’s Pro attracted surfers from eight nations in 2015, including Brazil, Japan, New Zealand, the UK and France, as well as a strong home contingent. Ray White Noosa provided a small financial gesture this year, offering Noosa Malibu Club member, Lucy Cantori, sponsorship for the Women’s Open division.
With their kind support and vocal encouragement through every heat, Lucy did them proud, making it all the way to the final. “I used to deliver coffees to Ray White and got talking to them about my surfing,” she said. “When the Noosa Festival of Surfing 2015 came around they asked if they could sponsor me and I was stoked. They paid off my new longboard then set me up with a couple of bikinis, some beach towels and a couple of shirts. “All of the staff also came down
and watched me surf every heat, which was awesome and probably one of the reasons I made the final.” Inspired by this small role in 2015, Ray White Noosa has joined the Noosa Festival of Surfing 2016 to sponsor the Ray White Noosa Women’s Pro. While the ladies have provided a superb display of surfing prowess for many years, a significant influx has elevated the Women’s Pro to a new level in recent times and the festival’s continued hosting of a women’s pro division has been testament to the
ever-increasing talent from around the world. “The division really brings out the best in all of us,” says Lucy. “We all see what each other is doing and lift our game because of it. Having a professional women’s division right at my home break is awesome.” As one of the foremost competitions for female longboarding and the largest surfing event in the world, the Noosa Festival of Surfing continues to rely on the kind and generous support of local businesses such as Ray White Noosa. “Having local support like Ray
White Noosa is essential to keep the festival running,” Lucy said. “Without it, divisions wouldn’t run and eventually longboard surfing would disappear. It’s too good a sport to see that happen. More businesses should get involved like Ray White.” The club looks forward to welcoming Lucy and the Ray White Noosa team to First Point in 2016. If you or your business would like to become involved in the 25th Anniversary Noosa Festival of Surfing, please contact Festival Director, Sam Smith at info@noosafestivalofsurfing.com to express your interest.
Perfect conditions for surf comp By DEAN SMALLMAN LAST Sunday the very best of the Sunshine Coast’s surf club competitors went head to head at Alexandra Headlands in the first of the selection events that will decide the make-up of the branch team that will represent the Sunshine Coast at this season’s branch titles. With conditions absolutely perfect with a light offshore breeze and a two-foot swell, the day promised to be an exciting one for all. The day began with beach events which saw in the U15s Tom Baker grab a hard-earned second place and Katie Gleeson a third. When the water events got underway just before noon, Sunshine really stepped up and proved why it was the number one aggregate club
on the coast last season. In the U13s, Tiffany McKay grabbed a great third in the swim and in the hotly contested U14s, Max Moore had a great day with a first in the board and a second in the iron, while Ruby Nolan came away with a second in the swim and a third in the iron. In the U15s, Jonty Redwood worked hard for a third in the iron and a third in the swim with Olivia Emmanuel also grabbing third in the girls' iron and girls’ board. With U17s having to undertake two separate iron events across the day, Sunshine Beach man mountain Zack Barwicki stepped up and grabbed a third in the iron and a third in the super fast swim. The attention now shifts to Rainbow Beach for the two-day carnival that brings together Nippers from
U8s to U15s and for the bigger kids the Coolangatta Gold. With the season kicking off with Nippers just two weeks ago, the training has also stepped up. Max Pettigrove has tailored a fantastic program with key coaching staff that includes Hall of Fame Legend Clint Robinson and the highly respected Alex Austin. With a mix of Open Beach, River and Noosa West sessions available to all members, the foundations for another great year have once again been laid. This coming Sunday with the help of Steve Tindal at Bakers Delight in Noosa Junction, the club will be holding its annual family fun day. This is a great day that sees all Nippers come together in a “tough Mudder” type event followed by
Tom Baker flying on his way to second in the U15 Flags. Picture: SUPPLIED a family barbecue. If you are still keen to get involved with this great summer sport, it’s not too late, sim-
ply contact the club, jump online or simply come to the family fun day and see what all the hype is about.
Noosa Softball’s seven state reps By RICHARD MURRIHY THE holidays are over and the Noosa Softball Club’s season approaches. While most had a relaxing time over the holidays, the club had the Under 17 and Under 19 state championships bookending the holidays and some more Queensland reps added to our stable. The Under 17s were first where Riley, Lewis, Dylan, Josh and William all represented different associations and played well. Riley and Lewis played nine games and won the president’s cup with Caboolture; game time was 11 hours and noosa.starcommunity.com.au
36 minutes with warm up and warm down in a three-day tournament, a fair effort by the two boys, William, Dylan and Josh put in eight games. The girls had Shinai, Shinae, Josie and Emma all play for two associations and eight games each. Shinai and Josie added to our Queensland reps by being selected in the Queensland girls Under 17 team. Well done girls. This was followed by Under 19 girls at Mooloolah and the boys at Hervey Bay. Lewis, Leigh, Luke, Shinai and Fraser all represented Noosa in various teams with the girls losing the
president’s cup final in a good effort. Luke Thomas was again selected for Queensland to cap a good year for Noosa Softball. Noosa now has seven current players in Queensland teams; a great effort by a small club. The season starts on 17 October and there are spots for players from four-years-old and up. The competition is mixed and there is a strong coaching group to help your children progress through the ranks. You can contact registrarnoosasoftball@gmail.com for details of teams.
