A whiz with words By CASEY NEILL

ANIRUDH starts each day with a visit to the bathroom armed with biographies and flashcards. The nine-year-old Keysborough kid is inspiring young spellers across the country to hit the books. Anirudh, 9, trumped 3000 applicants to win The Great Australian Spelling Bee and his passion for words is also rubbing off on his younger brother. Four-year-old Aarav recently finished third in his early learning centre spelling bee. “I’m so glad that he’s been an inspiration not only in the family but to other kids as well,” their mum Sujatha said. Anirudh spent three and a half weeks in Sydney filming for the Channel 10 program and took home a $50,000 education scholarship and $10,000 worth of goods for his school, Haileybury. Camaraderie was the last word he correctly spelt. “I’m really glad that I actually ended up on that word because it means a mutual trust or friendship that actually brings people together,” he said. “That’s what I’ve been doing the whole time of the spelling bee.” Anirudh started reading at age two. “He wasn’t even talking,” Sujatha said. “At his child care during reading time, he used to read instead of the teacher.” She said he was a self-guided learner with a great memory. “I really liked words in general and my interest in reading gradually developed into spelling,” Anirudh said. “I worked on my spelling because it was my interest.” His dad Prith told him he needed to learn two things to spell well. “You need to learn words and then you need to learn about words,” he said.

He’s completing an online neuroscience course run by Harvard University and has a neuroscience career in his sights. “People say that the brain is the most complex organism in the whole universe that we know of,” Anirudh said.
“So my curiosity is driving that, and I also want to help people because there are neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease that devastate people’s lives. “I just want to help them.” Anirudh is the youngest in his class and skipped Grade 3.
“One of my skills is I can make friends really easily,” he said. “They don’t really bother with how smart I am as long as I’m fun.” Intrapac Projects chief operating officer Max Shifman said Anirudh was a “Somerfield celebrity”.

Death knell sounds for heritage arena By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE proposed demolition of Stan Prior Sound Shell will help deter drinking and violence in Dandenong Park, says a senior police officer. Greater Dandenong councillors will vote on the council’s proposed $255,000 joint demolition of the sound shell and nearby kindergarten and bowls club on 12 October. As stated under the council’s dormant 2007 Dandenong Park masterplan, the facilities will make way for a multi-purpose open space area. The buildings’ age and deterioration, as well as the high capital cost to make them building and safety-compliant, were also factors, a council report stated. Dandenong police’s Inspector Bruce Kitchen welcomed opening up the sound shell area, which had become blighted by public drinking, graffiti as well as the alleged nighttime murder of Christian Williams last year.
He said opening up the cluttered area would deter and expose drinkers to police and council officers’ attention. “It’s against a council bylaw to drink in that park – we reinforce that quite regularly.” Cornerstone Contact Centre pastor Don Cameron said he had long advised homeless people to avoid sleeping rough under the sound shell. “I know some heavy drinkers who say it is a dangerous place as (there are) too many drunks and also people using drugs hang out there to drink or use drugs with their associates. “Things can become violent. “It is my hope that Dandenong Park becomes a safer place at nights, there are less people sleeping rough and those that do have somewhere safer to sleep than Dandenong Park.” However, each of the sites have significant history – the bowls club had occupied the green since 1883,
and the kindergarten building and sound shell are listed in the council’s heritage places register. The park itself is subject to a heritage overlay, requiring a special permit for the demolitions. According to the council’s heritage places register, the 48-year-old sound shell was significant to Melbourne’s metro area because it was a “well preserved and good example of an uncommon building type”. It was also a memorial to prominent local identity and City of Dandenong Band member Stan Prior, who died at the age of 102 in 1992. The band, which lobbied for the sound shell in the 1960s, has rehearsed and stored its instruments there for many years. “The increase in open space means more park for people, but less opportunity for the band – a situation which would have disappointed Stan, I am sure,” the band’s music director Michael Mathers said. Mr Mathers said the band’s growing membership would have
preferred to have seen the space developed into a more suitable, less cramped venue. “Alternatively, we would love to have been offered the bowls club or another suitable building as a bandroom and thus been able to erect a more permanent, substantial and appropriate recognition to Stan in close proximity to the sound shell.” Under the council’s plan, a “suite” of interpretative signs will mark the history of the to-be-demolished facilities. Dandenong and District Historical Society president Chris Keys said the sound-shell’s significance had waned because it was underutilised. “I think it is a great idea to have music in parks but it’s probably more because where it was. Very few people would know where it was.” She noted that a lot of buildings in the council’s heritage register had been demolished.
DANDENONG’S Kate Cumber will climb more than 1600 steps in a bid to inspire. The Genesis Dandenong fitness instructor and personal trainer has signed up for the Eureka Climb, on Sunday 15 November. The finish line is at the Eureka Tower Skydeck – 88 floors or 1646 steps up. “Some of my clients need motivation,” Ms Cumber said. She said others had reached their goal weight and needed another challenge. “I’ve been including extra stairs and extra hills into my workouts,” she said. “I’ve done it before, two years ago, and I came second. “I really want to win, though.” Australia’s biggest vertical race up Melbourne’s tallest building will raise money for Whitelion and Interplast Australia and New Zealand. It’s open to anyone aged 12 years and older and there will be timed and untimed stairwells available.
Kate Cumber will tackle 88 flights of stairs. 144916
Home for harmony DANDENONG Carols by Candlelight is moving to Harmony Square. The 68th incarnation of the event will leave Dandenong Park for the bright lights of the Lonsdale Street civic centre. Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce executive officer Amanda Checken said she hoped the move would boost attendance. Live performances will kick off at 6.30pm on Friday 18 December and will include children’s entertainment group The Workers. Justin Peters, Emma Kate Tobia, the City of Greater Dandenong Band and the Greater Dandenong Sings choir will return, and Santa will make an appearance. A MAN was hit with a wrench and had his car stolen in a harrowing group attack after he pulled over in Noble Park this month in one of two Greater Dandenong armed robberies which are being investigated by the Embona Taskforce. In the first incident the victim parked his car outside a Noble Park milk bar near the intersection of Yarraman Road and Charnfield Crescent, about 9pm on Monday 5 October, when he was set upon by four men who demanded his car keys. One of the men hit him with a wrench and took his keys before fleeing in the victim’s black Range Rover. The rest of the attackers fled in a light-coloured Camry, the same car the group had arrived in. The victim’s arm was injured in the attack but he didn’t need hospital attention. The four attackers are all described as being Asian in appearance. Then on Tuesday 6 October a man was walked along Olympic Avenue in Springvale South about 9.30pm when two men came out of Burden Park, one wielding a large hunting knife, and demanded his backpack. Both men were described as teenagers and of Pacific Islander appearance. Any witnesses to either incident are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report to www. crimestoppersvic.vic.gov.au

Training options for a career of the future THE south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne are home to the most diverse community as well as two of the fastest growing local government areas in the country. It boasts more than 100 nationalities speaking more than 180 languages and an additional 270 people arriving in the region each week. The cultural and linguistic diversity of the almost 500,000 people living in the region is mirrored by the diversity of employment options available and the level of educational attainment of residents. At a time of huge investment in vocational education by both state and federal governments, the south-east region is lucky to be serviced by some extremely reliable and ethical training organisations. However, the region is also home to a number of training organisations that take advantage of the vulnerability of some local residents and their innate trusting nature. If you are looking for training, treat your future studies as an investment, think of it as though you are buying a car.

“
VICTORIA IS THE ONLY STATE WHICH CAN BOAST A GROWING MANUFACTURING WORKFORCE…
You would never buy a car without taking it for a test drive, making sure it was road worthy, asking friends and family for their opinion and making sure it met your needs.
Training is not dissimilar to this. Ask yourself why you want to study, what course you want or need to do then find some training providers that offer the course, visit them and look at their facilities, ask around your network or previous students for feedback, find out how much the course is and if it is delivered in a way that suits you. Students often ask how long a course will take and how much it will cost. Unfortunately, a short course that is cheap does not always result in good educational outcomes. Ask prospective employers if they value training form the organisation or if they suggest a particular quality training provider. Over the next four years there will be an estimated 45,000 new jobs created in the south-east region, add this to an ageing workforce where approximately 30,000 workers will retire over the same period, and we have a pool of more than 70,000 jobs. Manufacturing remains the biggest employer in the region and despite recent media claims, Victoria is the only state which can boast a
growing manufacturing workforce. The future workforce required for this sector will need to be sophisticated and flexible to match the future direction of these companies. There is also a large percentage of this workforce that is nearing retirement and will need to be replaced in the near future, creating opportunities for younger employees who are seeking to enter the manufacturing industry. Other areas of employment growth will be around health and community services, building and construction, education and training and retail which together make up 60 per cent of the new jobs being created. To be well prepared to take advantage of the opportunities available in this diverse employment landscape, focus your training on growth sector industries, train with quality providers which can be identified through thorough research and broad networking. This approach will give you the best opportunity of matching your qualifications and skills with the needs of employers and putting you on the right path to a successful career.
“Flashing amber dome lights are becoming as common as stray dogs, there is even one in the window of a Dandenong shop.”
5 years ago 11 October 2010 Seniors in on all the fun GREATER Dandenong senior citizens kept active last week through walks, work-shops and a host of other activities in a celebration of the golden years of life. Heritage Hill Museum volunteer Angela Costigan said 40 residents enjoyed Devonshire tea and a tour of the historic precinct in central Dandenong. October is the most glorious month in terms of the roses and spring flowers. Laurel Lodge, Benga House and St James Anglican Church are in the Heritage Hill area and offer examples of past architecture.
LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 8 October 1915 A Recent Accident SIR – Will you kindly grant me space in your esteemed columns to contradict some falsehoods which have been circulated with regard to my treatment of the young man who collided with my milk cart on the 26th September. When the accident occurred my brother, who was riding in the back of the cart, jumped out and went to the cyclist’s assistance, and I asked him if he was hurt, and twice offered to take him to a doctor, but he refused to allow me to do so, after which I left for home. The following evening I called upon the boy’s father, and also saw the young man. These falsehoods should not have been circulated. Thanking you in anticipation. W S Foster
50 years ago 13 October 1965 Make ‘Way for the Red Light’ DANDENONG – Ambulances throughout Victoria will soon all have red flashing dome lights to replace the current amber lights which are almost standard. At present only the fire brigade has the red flashing lights and everything from tow trucks to council garbage collectors have amber dome lights with the Police alone on blue. Another change will be the gradual introduction of all white ambulances throughout the state. Officers of the local Peninsula Ambulance Service are very happy about the change. “It was getting to the stage where nobody took any notice of an ambulance,” Sub-Station Officer Mick Hay said yesterday.
20 years ago 16 October 1995 Train crime ‘alarming’ PEOPLE who travel on trains after dark triple their risk of being assaulted, raped or robbed, says State Labor MP for Springvale Eddie Micallef. Mr Micallef described the results of a survey highlighted in the media this month as “alarming” saying it was no coincidence the crime rate came soon after train staff numbers were cut. The survey found that of 475,000 commuters who travelled after 6pm during a 12 month period, 36,000 were victims of aggressive behaviour.

Blitz fines not fine By CASEY NEILL A NOBLE Park mechanic says unfair parking fines are driving away customers. But the City of Greater Dandenong says it’s just clearing the way for pedestrians. Speaking on behalf of Noble One Motors owner John Theodorou, Paul Rodrigues said parking inspectors were deliberately targeting the business and booking cars. “It’s an easy target. With 10 or 15 cars in one spot, they can pick up one or two sticking over the footpath, he said. “They never book all the other cars that are illegally parked in Ian Street. “He just can’t run his business. “Every time a customer drives in, if they’re sticking over the footpath they get a fine.
“Customers don’t want to come back and get their car serviced here. “John’s losing business because of the council. Mr Rodrigues said Mr Theorodou bought the Heatherton Road business about 18 months ago and it was in the past few months that the number of fines had increased. He said the space between the ageing building and footpath was not long enough to accommodate modern cars. “You can’t really fit cars perfectly against the wall, he said. “They hang about 10 centimetres over the footpath. “But the whole footpath is a driveway. There’s still plenty of room for people to walk. “There’s so much space yet they’re deliberately tar-

Free market parking would cost too much By CASEY NEILL CALLS for free parking at Dandenong Market have been shouted down as unnecessary and too hard. Councillor Peter Brown said parking at South Melbourne Market was free for the first two hours, and additional free council parking onstreet was also available. “There is free parking at Parkmore. Southland. Waverley Gardens, he said. “Why charge people to park at a
market which is intended to attract the lowest economic demographic in Melbourne? “Free parking in Toorak for the wealthy, charged parking at Dandenong for the poor. It does not make sense, he said. But councillor John Kelly said parking at the market was free of charge on Sundays, and on other trading days it cost 50 cents per hour or $1 for three hours. “Fifty cents is the cheapest park-
ing in Australia, and it’s just about trying to turn the customers over, he said. “Free parking for two hours means we’ve got to employ parking staff to check on every car. “I never hear people complaining about the cost of parking at the Dandenong Market. “Peter’s probably had a bad night’s sleep. Corporate services director Mick Jaensch said parking at the market
was extremely affordable and ensured there was a constant turnover of cars to allow customers to park. He said implementing a “first two hours free approach would require a boom gate system as applied at other Melbourne markets, or a significant investment in more patrolling compliance officers. Should parking at Dandenong Market be free of charge? Email journal@starnewsgroup.com.au or comment on www.facebook.com/ DandenongJournal.

Stores given all-clear By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong Council has given a clean bill of health to a fruit-and-veg business after its store in Fountain Gate was accused of “appalling food safety and hygiene standards by an ex-manager. A & S Wholesale Fruit and Vegetables, which also has stores in Parkmore and Dandenong Plaza shopping centres, was targeted on Facebook by its former Fountain Gate employee Michael Storer. The post prompted Greater Dandenong Council to inspect A & S Wholesale Fruit and Vegetables stores in its area. Mr Storer tagged his post on 5 October with graphic photos of vermin and cockroaches among fruit and vegetables, claiming they were taken at the store’s Fountain Gate premises.
The post went viral, being shared more than 27,000 times in less than two days. Mr Storer said he then took the post down because he was being overwhelmed by messages. In its own Facebook post on 6 October, A & S Wholesale Fruit and Vegetables defended its standards in an open letter to Mr Storer. “The reason we hired you (and will continue to hire others like you) is because we take our produce quality, staff safety, training and food handling seriously, the A & S Wholesale post stated. “We want to assure our customers that our produce is stored and rotated appropriately on a daily basis to ensure that all food is fresh, clean and handled effectively.
“We have strict cleaning and hygiene policies in place that we continue to work on and improve. “Extensive pest control is also in place at all of our stores to prevent and eliminate issues of this type if and when they arise. Company spokeswoman Sophie Broomfield said Mr Storer’s posted photos were identifiably taken in a shared rubbish area at Fountain Gate. But Mr Storer stood by his claims last Thursday. “I can guarantee they weren’t taken in the rubbish area. Mr Storer claimed he had been employed to “change the culture and fix standards within the store but was unable to implement change. He said he posted the claims out of “conscience and that it was right to no-
tify families who were shopping at the store. “If the post has (changed the store’s practices) I’m happy I did it. “I’ve had current and past employees message me, saying they would back me. Greater Dandenong regulatory services manager Peter Shelton said “no matters of concern were found during inspections of the two A&S stores in the municipality last week. “A&S stores will be inspected as frequently as necessary to manage the level of risk they actually present to public health. He confirmed the Dandenong Plaza store was issued a clean-up notice by the council in 2013. Ms Broomfield said legal action against Mr Storer was being considered.

A wheely good way to work GREATER Dandenong residents are urged to jump on their bikes for Ride2Work Day. The council will host a ride from Springvale Railway Station into the Dandenong Civic Centre with several stops along the way on Wednesday 10 October. A free coffee, healthy breakfast and massage will be available in Harmony Square for people who register for the ride. Mayor Sean O’Reilly said the event could help people to discover the benefits of cycling. “It’s a great way to destress, and save money on petrol and parking, he said. “Riding is something you can easily fit around your busy work and family commitments. Bicycle Network is aiming for 10,000 new riders to take part in this year’s Ride2Work Day. Chief external relations officer Chris Carpenter more than two-thirds of Australians were not getting enough exercise. “More than half of the riders who start commuting to work on Ride2Work Day are still regularly riding 12 months later, he said. AN ICE-fuelled Dandenong South man pulled an imitation handgun on a mechanic after accusing the victim of sleeping with his ex-partner. Bashkim Gashi, 32, pleaded guilty to unlawful assault with a weapon, threatening to inflict serious injury and two counts of stealing mobile phones at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 October. According to an agreed police summary, Gashi had asked the victim to meet him in Dalgety Street, Dandenong South, to fix his car at 7pm on 18 May. At the meeting, Gashi showed the man a photo on a mobile phone, and asked the man if it was him. “No, it’s my brother,” the victim replied. Gashi then showed a second photo of a female and asked the victim: “Have you had sex with her?” The accused demanded the
victim produce his phone and type in the ex-partner’s number. The ex-partner’s name came up on the mechanic’s phone; he later told police that he had fixed her car in the past. The victim was told to phone the number, then the ex-partner’s home number – but there was no answer on both occasions. The victim was then told to call a third number – which was the ex-partner’s brother, who answered the call. Gashi spoke to the brother, ended the call and placed the victim’s iPhone 6 in his pocket. When the victim asked for his phone back, Gashi pointed a black imitation hand gun at the victim’s stomach and told him to get back in the car. Four days earlier in Doveton, an “angry” Gashi stole the phone of a female friend of his ex-partner’s, the police summary stated.
He had alleged the friend’s phone contained text messages about his relationship with the ex-partner. Gashi’s lawyer told the court on Monday that the accused had drug issues for the past six years, including using high amounts of ice at the time of offending. The accused had been remanded in custody since 19 May, and been subject to 23-hour-a-day lockdowns due to prison riots, the lawyer said. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell sentenced Gashi to a 12-month community corrections order on top of 140 days served in pre-sentence custody. A full intervention order was varied - with the consent of his ex-partner - to allow him to contact her by phone and to meet her at an agreed location other than her address. Gashi was also ordered to give a DNA sample to police.

DANDENONG has always been known for its large, majestic river red gums. Many have made way for development, but one in the bulldozer's path in Dandenong South has been saved. Abbotts Road is being duplicated from Park Drive to Remington Drive and it was recommended that the tree be cut down based on concern it could drop limbs on drivers. Fortunately our officers rejected it, Greater Dandenong councillor Peter Brown said. An ongoing inspection and pruning regime is planned. Construction works were due to Picture: KIM CARTMELL start in September and finish in May next year. 145069 FAR be it for us to accuse a lawyer of gilding the lily. One defence lawyer, with great bravado, in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court last week told the court her client had never been remanded in custody before. A quick internet search, however, would have told the presiding magistrate a much different story. GREATER Dandenong’s business community is bringing smiles to the faces of sick kids. Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce executive officer Amanda Checken is still doing the sums following the annual Grand Final Charity Lunch at Sandhurst Club in Skye on Wednesday 30 September. But she’s confident the cash going to Make-A-Wish Australia will be higher than last year’s $7000 total. Ms Checken said speaker and AFL legend Tim Watson had each of the 200 guests enthralled. “He probably went about 20 minutes over time but you could have heard a pin drop in
the room so we let him go. He was fantastic.” PLAYGROUP is at the top of its game in Greater Dandenong. The municipality is up for five nods at the Playgroup Victoria Awards, including Playgroup Agency of the Year, Annita Keevers and Doris Wong are in the running for Supported Playgroup Co-ordinator of the Year, Rosswood Playgroup in Dandenong North is among finalists for the Community Committee of the Year title and Jodie Skeels will vie for Supported Playgroup Facilitator of the Year. The winners will be announced on 12 November. Journal photographer Gary Sissons has written a heartfelt piece in this month’s Woman’s Weekly about the horrific death of young Luke Batty at Tyabb in February 2014. Gary was the first photographer on the scene and donated his photos to the Weekly to illustrate an extract from Rosie Batty’s new book about her son’s death.
Feedback can be written in your own language and will be translated by Council. All feedback must be received in writing by 5pm, Monday 2 November.

It’s very nice to see them succeed.
“We have worked with some wonderful volunteers who told me some amazing stories about their lives and the troubles they’ve been through. “I don’t think people realise how moving the refugee experience is until they actually meet that person face to face. “I tried to put myself in those shoes and I just couldn’t do it.” SLAC became a registered training organisation (RTO) in 2009. “English language is a massive issue in Springvale,” Ms Sheldon said. “We provide opportunities for the community to pathway into

meaningful education that would lead to employment. “I think it’s a job that ultimately gives people confidence and dignity, when they have their own income.” She said employment also broke down cultural isolation barriers. The SLAC name came about to differentiate the organisation from Springvale Community Health Service and Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau. “I’d take a phone call from someone with an acute toothache calling from a public phone wanting a dentist,” Ms Sheldon said. “We’d have calls about food vouchers, people turning up on doorstep. “And I think in those years we decided to focus on what we do. “It’s about learning opportunities and about activities but, essentially, it’s all about people achieving positive change in their lives. “I expect to see the change in 12 months and in more than 80 per cent of cases I will see that change in 12 months. “We’ll continue doing what we’re doing and we’ll continue working really hard to achieve positive change.” Ms Sheldon is keen to hear from descendants and associates of the committee members and teachers Robert ‘Bob’ Oliver Luxford, Vera Ericksen, Ken Johns, Nat Prokhovnik, John Burgess, Brian Gardiner, Frank Hodgson, Mary Gardiner, Claude Storer, Gary Hallihan, Ngaire Quinton, Val Ludlow, Rick and Jill Craven, Josh Robinson, Connie Bertram, Helen Bower and Greg Charman.

ELENA Sheldon has watched countless people turn their lives around. She’s managed Springvale Learning and Activities Centre (SLAC) for 10 years. The organisation first opened its doors in 1945 as the Springvale Youth Club. It changed to Springvale Community Centre before taking on its current title in 2007. Research into its history is underway to celebrate its 70th anniversary. “The project will honour the initiators, past and present members, valuable volunteers, partners, participants and more,” Ms Sheldon said. She said interviews would collect personal stories and views on Springvale and all research would go to create a publication which will be made available to the community. “We are looking for people who were involved with the centre at any time during their lives,” she said. “We are very interested in old photographs and stories, not just about the centre but Springvale in general and how it has changed over the years.” Ms Sheldon didn’t know much about Springvale when she started. “I didn’t know much about the community or the dynamics,” she said. “As I learnt more about the organisation I was quite impressed by its history. “The fact that it goes back to 1945, the fact that we still have people on the committee who were involved in the ’90s.

Family assaults rising By CASEY NEILL FAMILY violence incidents are still on the rise in Greater Dandenong. The Crime Statistics Agency on Thursday 1 October released crime statistics for Victoria for the year ending 30 June. They showed there were 2123 family violence incidents in the Greater Dandenong Police Service Area (PSA) during the period. This was up 0.3 per cent from the previous 12 months and up almost 30 per cent from 2010-’11. The figure is well below neighbouring Casey, which recorded 3775 incidents, but
well above the 608 incidents recorded in Bayside, the lowest in the Southern Metro Region. Holly Gordon from Dandenong education and welfare service Wellsprings for Women said family violence had always been prevalent among its users. “I think they’re very scary statistics, and I think it’s sad that it’s still increasing despite what’s happening the media to try and bring those statistics down,” she said. “It doesn’t seem to be making a difference at the moment. “It’s very heartbreaking when our participants have to leave the area due to domestic violence and break their own edu-
IN BRIEF Wheels on fire TWO wheelie bins were set on fire outside a Dandenong North home late last month. The bins were set alight on the Outlook Drive nature strip about 4.30am on Tuesday 29 September. CFA crews put out the fire, which also singed some of the grass. It’s understood there were other wheelie bins in the street that weren’t tampered with, but a spokesman for Dandenong police said it was unlikely the fire was a targeted attack. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic. vic.gov.au.
support domestic violence issues, but it’s still something that definitely comes up. “There needs to be more funding in those areas. It does put a strain on other organisations.” Ms Gordon said Wellsprings focused on education, particularly for new arrivals. “We’ve had local police come and speak to our Learning to Live in Australia group about what is and isn’t okay in Australia, what domestic violence is, what to do if there are any issues ... ” she said. “We want them to be familiar with the police and that there’s somewhere safe to go in Australia.”
cation to take their families to safety. “I guess it’s hard for people to talk about here. “I think they come here for safety and sometimes it’s the only place that their husbands might allow them to come as well because it’s a women-only environment.” Ms Gordon said not all family violence victims who visited Wellsprings disclosed their ordeal. “We can support women who do disclose what’s happening to them. We can refer them to the right services,” she said. “It’s not really our core business to
School market’s aim is to help them fly PLANTS, bric-a-brac and face painting are helping kids to feel freedom. A sausage sizzle, toys, art and craft, a jumping castle and giant slide will also be on offer at Springvale Park Special Developmental School’s first market. Proceeds will go towards a liberty swing, which is specially designed for children in wheelchairs. School principal Jackie Lowther said the school catered for children with disabilities, from pre-schoolers to 18-yearolds. It has six students in wheelchairs. “We want to make play accessible for all of our students,” Ms Lowther said.
“The swing allows children and young people in wheelchairs the opportunity to experience the joy of having a swing like their non-physically disabled peers. “These children and young people currently have to sit and watch from the sidelines as their peers experience the freedom and exhilaration of a swing. “This is something most of us take for granted.” The market will take place from 8am to noon on Sunday 15 November at Springvale Park Special Developmental School, 13-15 Sandown Road, Springvale (opposite the railway station). Stalls are priced from $15. Call 9546 7666 for more information or to get involved.

FIRE crews extinguished a shed blaze that ignited the lawns of Springvale Botanical Cemetery on Tuesday 6 October. Four CFA appliances were called to a backyard shed alight in Aintree Court, Noble Park North, about 10.13am, a CFA spokesman said. The fire spread onto the backyard fence adjoining the cemetery and onto about two metres of the cemetery’s lawn. Firefighters reportedly had the blaze under control within 15 minutes.

Development concerns By CASEY NEILL NOBLE Park residents are demanding action on overdevelopment in their suburb. Level crossing removal was also a hot topic at the Noble Park Community Action Forum at Paddy O’Donoghue Centre on Wednesday 7 October. Noble Park resident Felix De Nyagui said Level Crossing Removal Authority said the tender process for grade separations at Heatherton, Chandler and Corrigan roads hadn’t been finalised. “But we were given assurances that by January 2016 we will
know the specifics – whether it will be an underpass or overpass,” he said. “That’s what the community was really concerned about. “That was really important for the traders. “A lot of people were concerned about the impact it would have on Heatherton Road and the traffic. “Would people be able to make right hand turns from Ian Street and the other streets that run along Heatherton Road?” Mr Nyagui said there was a large and passionate turnout.
The Community Action Forum (CAF) chairwoman said she would also write to MPs. “The residents are right to be frustrated,” she said. “I’m as frustrated as they are at the lack of listening to them. Everything goes to VCAT.” She’s “cheesed off” with developers moving into older areas and failing to take parking and amenity into account. “We’re all the time speaking to the government planning department about what we can do,” she said.
“There was also a lot of passion shared about what many people perceived as overdevelopment in the Noble Park area,” he said. He said he wasn’t opposed to redevelopment, just multistorey developments with ramifications for parking and overshadowing. Mr Nyagui asked council representatives to hold a forum regarding the topic. Councillor Roz Blades urged the residents to write to their local parliamentarians to request a meeting because it was a State Government issue.
Cr Blades said the forum was “one of our best”. “The place was packed,” she said. “We heard about CCTV, crime stats from the police. “There are going to be 15 CCTV cameras. That was wellreceived.” Cr Blades said the group had invited the level crossing removal representatives back to a meeting early next year for updates. “We stressed to them that we were looking for rail under the road, because the Springvale station model had worked so well,” she said.
When stress strikes, it’s time to share with friends A SEA of students flooded Harmony Square during a Mental Health Week event. The Greater Dandenong teens heard from three guests speakers and enjoyed entertainment at the City of Greater Dandenong’s Youth and Family Services forum on Thursday 8 October. The aim was to increase help-seeking behaviour in young people and increase their capacity to support their peers. Guest speakers included The Resilience Project founding director Hugh Van Cuylenburg, renowned for his ongoing work nationally and internationally. He discussed youth mental health with a focus on helping mates experiencing mental health issues. Motivational Company director Sacha Kaluri founded the annual Australian Teen EXPO and explored how young people could help their mates and build resilience in the context of bullying. Aussie rules footballer and Beyondblue ambassador Jason Ball discussed how his mates and community supported him when he came out publicly as a gay footballer.

Stolen cars ‘borrowed’ By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DISQUALIFIED driver has argued he was found with two different stolen cars in three days out of a misguided desire to get his life on track. Paul Donnell, 41, had been allegedly found by police next to a stolen Mitsubishi van with stolen number plates at a Cranbourne North 7-11 car park late on 4 October, a court heard on Monday. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Adam Green told the court that tools had been found in the van to trigger its ignition.
The van had been stolen from Caulfield, and the number plates taken from a vehicle parked at the Dandenong Club in the previous month, the court heard. On 2 October, Donnell was allegedly driving an unregistered stolen vehicle with stolen plates in Dandenong North. Inside the car was a backpack containing a screwdriver that police believed was used to steal number plates, Leading Sen Const Green told the court. Donnell, whose driving licence was suspended, admitted stealing the car’s number plates from a vehicle in Noble Park.
Defence lawyer Nadine Daniel told the court that Donnell’s offending stemmed from “borrowing cars in dubious circumstances” due to his own car being impounded. “The offence can’t be put on the basis that he stole it but was using a stolen car in circumstances that he should have known it was stolen. “(The vehicles) had things in the back that he wasn’t aware of.” She said most of Donnell’s criminal history related to breaching intervention orders rather than dishonesty offences. Donnell had suffered “significant is-
sues” such as losing his removalist business, clinical depression and at times sleeping rough since his marriage broke down four years ago, Ms Daniel said. She said he was driving the cars because he was “blinded” by his desire to get his business “up and running”. Because of his homelessness, Donnell was unaware his licence expired last year. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted Donnell’s “short but serious” criminal history for someone of his age. She remanded Donnell in custody for an assessment for a community corrections order the next day.
Kids get their pennies out SHARING a personal connection with the Very Special Kids Foundation (VSKF), Haileybury’s Keysborough Campus has raised more than $2000 for The Piggy Bank Appeal. Piling their pennies for children with lifethreatening conditions, Haileybury’s junior school students racked up $1200 over two days of fund-raising. Running a number of initiatives throughout the month of September Haileybury’s middle school students managed to raise $1000 in one week. With the funds raised going towards provid-
ing sick children with hospice and family support services, Haileybury students chose the Piggy Bank Appeal due to their fellow student’s brother, Darcy Hanssen. Under the VSKF care since he was born, Darcy’s two younger siblings attend Haileybury and with the help of the school the Hanssen family has been able to give back to the foundation that has done so much for them. The Hanssen family along with student leaders presented the cheque of $2215.80 to a representative from the VSKF.
IN BRIEF Roof fire POLICE and CFA crews were called out to a house fire in Latimer Street, Noble Park about 9.45pm on Tuesday 29 September after reports of a small fire in the roof of the house. The CFA crew extinguished the fire, which is not being treated as suspicious.
Van torched A STOLEN van was set on fire next to the Sandown Park greyhound track earlier this month. The Ford Econovan was reported on fire in Lightwood Road, about 6.50am on Tuesday 22 September. The van was stolen the day before from Murrumbeena. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

SPRING OPENS DOORS TO A NEW HOME Dust off the cobwebs on a dream to build the perfect new home this spring with Peet’s fun-filled Spring Open House event at the Livingston display village in Cranbourne East on Saturday 17 October. Peet is throwing open the doors to 17 new homes - designed by nine of Melbourne’s leading builders - in the heart of its Livingston community to help inspire prospective new home-owners. The award-winning developer is encouraging people to make an afternoon of it, bringing its display villages to life with a whole host of family-friendly entertainment and activities, mouthwatering refreshments, and the opportunity to win a $2000 Freedom voucher! As part of the celebration, 21 new homesites will be released on the day. These lots range in size from 336 to 777 square metres and are all in easy walking distance of the new Megasaurus Park. Currently under construction, the new park is set to feature a cutting-edge playground with an impressive skeletal dinosaur climbing frame, a slide, cradle swing, climbing scales and even a zip line. “People are at the heart of all our Peet communities, including Livingston, and we hope new homebuyers get a feel for the style of property they could be living in, said Peet managing director and CEO, Brendan Gore. “This event will offer a great opportunity to experience first-hand the community buyers could become a part of when they take that next step of building a home. Visitors on the day will be encouraged to stroll around the display village, explore the latest in sophisticated styles and
modern home design, and find the ideal floorplan to suit their own lifestyles and budget. Builders featured within the new Livingston Display Village include Eight Homes, Simonds Homes, Burbank, Dennis Family Homes, Boutique, Homebuyers Centre, Hotondo, JG King and Amaroo Homes. The Livingston Spring Open House event will begin at 1pm on Bathgate Crescent, Cranbourne East and include three hours of entertainment from roving performers, caricature and balloon artists, food and
drink vans and a display village challenge which will invite visitors to discover unique facts from the builders’ homes. Livingston in Cranbourne East is already home to more than 450 households, many of whom were attracted to the estate by the more than 10 hectares of parklands and open space it will feature upon completion, as well as its proximity to Casey RACE and Casey Fields. Police open cell jobs By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS WANTED in Dandenong police cells: people with high emotional intelligence and ethics. According to Dandenong police’s Inspector Bruce Kitchen, this is the desired skill set for custody officers - a new group of public servants who will replace police officers in supervising the cells’ prisoners. The station is one of six pilot sites in Victoria to accept the first intake of officers in January. Mr Kitchen said the officers will free up police members for foot patrols and other law enforcement duties. Police officers, in recent times, have
been regularly supervising up to 20 remand prisoners and people taken into custody on court days. As part of their duties, rotating pairs of police officers would be required to supervise prisoners in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court dock. Mr Kitchen said the recruits would be supervised by experienced police members and trained on-the-job. “But I suspect it won’t take them long to pick up how the system works. “Initially they’ll be utilised for watchhouse duties and custodial duties into the court.” Their other duties include guarding offenders in hospital and transporting
people from police stations. As part of a six-week training course, the officers are trained to use OC spray and handcuffs, but are not armed with tasers or guns. They have the power to search prisoners and to use reasonable force to maintain security, safety and good order. Some of the prisoners are observably agitated in their cells, heard screaming and furiously banging on doors from the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The court often hears that prisoners are afflicted with mental health issues and withdrawing from illicit drugs. Mr Kitchen said Dandenong police will interview and make the final selection of the successful custody officers.
Extremely ethical people with good communication skills and emotional intelligence were sought for the roles, he said. “You can see it as a stepping stone for being recruited into Victoria Police, because the job will give them relevant skills,” Mr Kitchen said. Custody officers will be paid at the level of Victorian Public Service Grade 2 award, which starts at $46,143. They are employed as public servants rather than police officers. The State Government has announced it will recruit, train and deploy 400 custody officers in 22 stations in the next three years at a cost of $148.6 million.
Cheque's out for funding donation WALLARA’S ambassadors have received a $2500 boost. CMV Group on Tuesday 6 October presented a cheque to the Dandenong-based disability service’s CEO Phil Hayes-Brown. The business is the parent company of Hallam Truck Centre and has a staff foundation that raises cash for local charities. CMV heard about the Wallara Ambassador program and wanted to lend a hand. Through it, Wallara clients learn public speaking and spread the word about the organisation. Ambassadors were on-hand to accept the cheque, present a plaque of appreciation and make cuppas in Potter Coffee, an on-site cafe at Wallara’s headquarters in Potter Street.

Opening the doors to help AN EXTRA 1000 people sought help from Keysborough’s Open Door in the past year. Keysborough Learning Centre’s pastoral, wellbeing and community development manager Glenda Arthur said demand was not as high as in central Dandenong. “We have still seen the numbers through Open Door rise over the past year from 3546 to 4622,” she said. “At the end of the 2008 financial year the number accessing Open Door was 1112 so these numbers show the huge increase over the years.” Ms Arthur said Open Door had been fortunate to have greater access to fresh fruit and vegetables from Avocare during the past financial year. “We continue to access food on a fortnightly basis from Foodbank Victoria.”

Mum’s knife threat By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A NOBLE Park girl called emergency services in fear while her alcoholic mother allegedly threatened her father with a kitchen knife. A court bail hearing on 5 October was told the 44-year-old applicant had repeatedly breached a full intervention order banning her from the house for previous threats and use of violence. Police informant Constable Phillipe Latour told the court that the “highly erratic and emotionally charged” mother allegedly banged on the Noble Park house’s door on 4 October. She told her ex-partner that she wanted to say goodbye to her daughters and dogs.
The children hid from their mother, who then allegedly took a knife from a kitchen drawer. “You and your mum are going to cry like I cry,” she allegedly told the ex-partner. “The kids will need foster care.” Out of “significant fear”, one of the children dialled triple zero while the ex-partner grabbed the knife before the accused could unsheathe it, Const Latour said. The accused left, and returned to the house later that day. The court heard that she had gone to the house twice the previous day smelling of alcohol. “The victim was very supportive of the applicant being in custody for
the safety of himself and his children,” Const Latour said. The “chronic alcoholic” was also barred from drinking alcohol at her own mother’s address under an interim intervention order, the informant said. Defence lawyer Adrian Dessi, in arguing for his client’s release, said the accused had “very limited” prior brushes with the law, had never spent time in jail and would not “necessarily” face jail for her current offences. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted the woman was not engaged in alcoholic treatment, and that alcohol played a role in her behaviour. “The thing that concerns me is her daughter has to ring triple zero.
“You have a child calling police due to her fear of her mother’s behaviour.” The mother was granted bail to live with her sister in Rushworth on the condition she was not to travel to Greater Dandenong except for court. Const Latour said the family dynamics were too unstable, given previous verbal arguments between the sisters over ownership of the northern Victorian property. “It could cause further family violence incidents.” Ms O’Donnell said the risks to the victim were mitigated by the distance from Noble Park and the woman’s “complete lack of (criminal) history”.

Marathon effort steps up By GEORGIA WESTGARTH AIMING to walk the equivalent of Uluru in a month Yarraman Oaks Primary School is transforming their school schedule for the month of October. A part of the school’s involvement in ‘Walk to School’ month, yoga, hiking, gardening, tennis and even bellydancing workshops will be on offer for parents and students. Launching ‘Walktober’ on Wednesday 7 October, the school’s Elissa Sewell said the morning had a carnival like atmosphere. “It was a fantastic morning the students had fruit salad and yogurt for breakfast and everyone was getting into
the spirit of the whole school month long event,” Ms Sewell said. Keeping track of their steps with pedometers donated by Victoria Walks, Ms Sewell said all the steps would be counted and their total revealed at the end of the month. “Hopefully we make it around Uluru,” she said. The school has also introduced nude food Friday’s which means every student has to bring food to school that isn’t wrapped in plastic. “It’s about encouraging healthy non-processed eating and on Fridays all the bins won’t get out so if students do have wrappers they will have to take them back home with them to throw away,” Ms Sewell explained.

A DANDENONG-based human rights activist has called for refugees on Manus Island and Nauru to join the expected mass influx of Syrian refugees into Australia. Wicki Wickiramasingham, who is part of the Australian branch of the International Movement of Tamil Culture, said he had renewed hope for a relatively small estimated number of 1500 asylum seekers in off-shore island detention. That hope was fuelled by the recent installation of a more moderate Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull as well as the announced arrival of 12,000 Syrian refugees. It has been reported that about 4000 Syrian refugees are expected to arrive in Victoria soon.
The federal government, however, indicated that asylum seekers in off-shore detention centres would not reach Australian shores but would be potentially repatriated in foreign countries. It announced that detainees would be given free-range outside Nauru detention centre as a High Court challenge to the centre’s legality began this month. “We welcome the 12,000 Syrian refugees,” Mr Wickiramasingham said. “But at the same time there’s people recognised as refugees who are suffering on Manus and Nauru.” Some processed refugees on Nauru for more than two years have been settled there without any prospect of a job, income, or schooling for their children, he said.
There were nearly 30 asylum-seeker children, some babies, detained on Nauru. Mr Wickiramasingham said Australia’s hardline stance was hurting its bid to get a seat on the United Nation’s Committee of Human Rights. “We’re happy the boats have stopped but the people who have come over here are not being looked after according to the (international) human rights treaty.” He said Dandenong - a longestablished hub for new arrivals - was the ideal alternative home. However many Dandenongbased asylum seekers, including widows and children, remained in community detention and banned from work. “The government should also do something for them and let them live equally with other people.”

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Tasty tour of the heart By CASEY NEILL “ONE might as well be in South East Asia.” Foodie Elizabeth Chong couldn’t speak highly enough on Springvale as she led a walking tour of food businesses in its heart on Friday 9 October. “Springvale was one of the first to really showcase Asian food in such a diverse way,” she said. “I had a cooking school way back in 1961 and I needed to buy some really specialised ingredients and foods that I couldn’t get anywhere else. “I was rather inspired by Springvale in those early days.” Elizabeth said the arcades that today house cuisine from Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and China were then just starting to take shape. “It was mainly old Springvale Road, and I used to go to the Nanyang supermarket,” she said. “I think they’ve still got a pretty strong following. They had a butcher’s shop in there as well. “That would be the oldest supermarket here I think.” The Chinese-born cook has introduced other cuisines to her cooking schools during its 54 years. “I got to really know Vietnamese cuisine here in Springvale,” she said. “This couldn’t be more authentic because they don’t know how to do it any other way. “It’s a testament to that if we warmly welcome and support migrants and refugees, we can create a vibrant community that works. “It just adds the richness and the colour to Melbourne. Where would we be without our migrants?” Milan Tea House was the first stop on the tour. Owner Wendy Wong demonstrated how to properly brew tea and its health benefits. At Quang Minh Chinese Medicine, Elizabeth said her mother regularly took her and her siblings to a herbalist. Bun Bun Bakery cooks baguettes on-site and fills them with fresh-tasting ingredients – including a chilli kick. The same family has run Golden Lake Cake and Roast for the past 20 years, which is known for freshly roasted duck. “I cannot go past this shop without buying turkey,” Elizabeth said. The tour passed Tommy’s Hairdressing, jewellery shops, green grocers and “the smelly fish arcade”, where Angie pointed out prawns she usually payed $25-plus per kilo for priced at $14.99. Frozen Smart stocks dumplings of all kinds ready for the steamer basket. The day finished at family restaurant My Cambodia, which serves traditional Cambodian food with influence from neighbouring countries.

Apartment’s pieces come together for visiting students DANDENONG’S Mosaic apartment complex is being used as a benchmark for future developers. About 50 fourth-year students from RMIT’s School of Property, Construction and Project Management on Friday 25 September spent a day at Mosaic and the proposed Forte Townhouses in Metro Village. They learnt about the master-planned complex’s design, construction and marketing. Burbank designed Mosaic in conjunction with architects Peddle Thorp and it includes
235 one-bedroom and twobedroom apartments designed around a central landscaped court yard, three retail spaces and three office spaces. Burbank’s senior development manager Rolland Gorriceta talked students through the development’s key features, addressing planning, urban form, off-the-plan sales, marketing, sustainability and environmental efficiencies. Mr Gorriceta said the tour gave students an insight into what to expect when they graduated.
He said they learnt how and why the development came to be and the many town planning considerations involved in a large development. “We were also fortunate to have Russel Tait, a project planner from the City of Greater Dandenong, on hand to talk about the development from a planning and community perspective,” he said. Residential development sales and marketing company Red23 organised the event, which for the first time will form part of the students’ official assessment criteria.

Kimberley Andrews will on Sunday 25 October host a trivia afternoon, silent auction and raffle at Dandenong Club. “I run this event with the help of my mum and sister, and we decided to run this event in honour of our grandmother - mum’s mum - who had breast cancer and has sadly passed away,” she said. “She had breast cancer twice and then she passed away of liver cancer in the end. She had quite a big battle. “It’s also for one of our family friends who also sadly passed away from breast cancer after the first year of our event.” They’re expecting about 150 ladies to attend - up from 45 at the inaugural event. “We are sold out at the moment which is wonderful,” Ms Andrews said. “My goal this year is to break our record from 2013 which was to raise over $5500. “At the moment, I’m trying to source prizes for our raffle and silent auction from local businesses.” She has donated more than $30,000 to the Cancer Council during her 10 years of partici-
pation in the Girls’ Night In concept, which has been running for 11 years and raises funds and awareness for breast and gynaecological cancers. “It was something that we could do to give back,” Ms Andrews said. “I do get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing how much fun everyone has on the day.” Dandenong Club has donated a room for the event each year. “And they donate a prize for each person on the winning table to come back and have a meal on them,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of community support. “We’ve had lots of other local businesses that have been on board. “We’re fortunate to have some new supporters this year as well. It’s just getting bigger and better.” Ms Andrews said the 10th anniversary made the day more special. “It’s a really lovely achievement,” she said. “The first time didn’t think about it being an annual thing. “We have good fun organising it. It’s a busy day but it’s worth it.” Call 0438 558 893 or email girlsdayfundraiser@hotmail. com to donate cash or prizes.

LEADERSHIP MIGHT NOT COME NATURALLY TO LENA MIRZAE, BUT SHE’S FAST BECOMING A TEEN THE COMMUNITY CAN LOOK UP TO. THE CRANBOURNE EAST STUDENT SPOKE TO CASEY NEILL ABOUT HOW FOOTBALL IS SHAPING HER JOURNEY.
Lena’s round life on a roll
FOOTBALL wasn’t even on Lena Mirzae’s radar when she was growing up in Afghanistan. Now the 19-year-old describes the sport as her life. It all started with her father fleeing his homeland for a fresh start for his family. “My dad took a boat and came down to Australia. I think it was in 2000 or 2001,” Lena said. “I haven’t talked to him much about it. “There’s danger for every single person out there, but for us - Hazaras - we were being constantly targeted. “My dad thought it was time for us to find a better life. “I actually don’t know much about my own country and my own cultural background, I was just a kid. “I still have a lot of difficulty knowing exactly what happened. “I’m still trying to gain that knowledge, see exactly why, how. “My mum had to handle me and my twin sisters - we were such a pain for her. “Eventually, we made our way here during 2007.” A broad grin spreads across her face as she recalls the reunion with her father. “You can’t describe the feeling, after six years,” she said. “I’m really glad to be here.” Lena had studied English in Pakistan before she arrived so had a grasp on the language. “But coming here was pretty different,” she laughed. The family’s first stop was Frankston. “The ladies were all in bikinis - we didn’t see that back in Afghanistan!” she said. “I can’t describe it, it was amazing. I think I was 11 or 10.” She went straight into school. “It was a bit difficult,” she said. And moving house to Dandenong, Hampton Park and finally Cranbourne East didn’t help. “Every time we moved, I had to change school,” she said. But Lena found her feet and graduated from the culturally diverse Dandenong High School. “There was a lot of commonality between us,” she said. She’s now studying a Bachelor of Business at Monash University. “I hope I find a job in something sport-related,” she said. And she’s forging connections in the field - one she knew next to nothing about before arriving in Australia. In Year 7, she got involved in a soccer program for new Australians. “Some of my friends and I went along and we’ve been playing since then,” she said. “Since then, football has been a big part of me.” And it has led her to the biggest opportunity of her life so far.

“
YOU DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU CAME FROM OR WHO YOU ARE, IT’S JUST EVERYONE BUSY PLAYING WITH THAT ROUND BALL. LENA MIRZAE
A friend encouraged Lena to contribute to the Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) I Speak Football project at Mills Reserve in Dandenong during terms two and three. The free activity is designed to highlight discrimination, equality and participation. “You don’t even think about where you came from or who you are, it’s just everyone busy playing with that round ball,” Lena said. I Speak Football is also part of the global community initiative Cityzens Giving, run through the Manchester City, New York City and Melbourne City football clubs. This connection gave Lena and fellow leader Mohammad Zarjan, 23, from Dandenong, the chance to travel to Manchester, England, for the first City Football Global Young Leader Summit on 13 June. “It was my first time travelling alone and my first time travelling overseas,” she said. “Going to Manchester was mind-blowing for me, and being treated like professional players. “We had to actually stay in the first team’s hotel. It was amazing.” Lena met Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and trained on the same field as the rest of the team. “That was a privilege,” she said. She also participated in leadership activities daily. “I don’t feel like a leader,” she laughed. “I never am a leader. I have a lot of work to do to become a leader.
“But there were bits and pieces that I took that I can visualise in our project out here in Melbourne. “There are a few sections that we are missing. “The developing countries put a lot more effort in compared to us. “We need to put on our seatbelts and let’s do this. “It’s more about teaching the kids exactly what is the idea of social cohesion. “We just basically run the football sessions but we don’t tell them exactly what it is and what’s our aim and what are our objectives. “That’s the first thing on the list that we need to work on.” Lena personally took a lot from the other 31 leaders, who hailed from six countries. “Some of the countries touched my heart,” she said. “I could reflect how they are at their home and how I could be back in Afghanistan. “There were some groups like from Colombia. “I know exactly what they go through and the fact that they don’t have access to much resources compared to what we do out here in Australia. “So I could imagine what I’d go through if I was back home in Afghanistan.” Leadership doesn’t come naturally to Lena, but she’s not shying away from the challenge. “I mean, why not? I need to give more to the community,” she said. “I need to have those leadership traits to do such a thing. “I have a lot of work to do in order to achieve that.”

A thunder(ing) end By JARROD POTTER THE journey they started in January came to a fitting end on Sunday for Dandenong Thunder’s Premier League under-18s. Showing the seniors just what it takes to claim a championship, the Thunder’s under-18s proved too strong in a 3-2 back-and-forth NPL thriller. A muggy Sunday evening at Broadmeadows Valley Park set the perfect backdrop for the final FFV match of the season - as the NPL under-18 East champions Dandenong and NPL U18 West champions Pascoe Vale squared off in the NPL Junior Finals Series. Both sides went in at full throttle for the ball, with bodies flying everywhere from crunching tackles and fairly hard shoving as neither side gave an inch in pursuit of the title. Dandenong was under immense pressure through the first 20 minutes as Pascoe Vale surged to create a number of near misses. Thunder launched a counterattack through forwards George Smethurst, Nathaniel Giabardo and Leigh Karavasil - with their hard work paying off in the 31st minute. After a Karavasil header beat the keeper, it took four attempts at a boxscramble for Thunder to slam the first goal home. Eventually, Smethurst connected with the go-ahead score to make amends for an earlier goal disallowed off-side. But Pascoe Vale responded instantly to keep the scores level as the sun set on a first-half deadlock. Playing under lights for the second half, Smethurst immediately resumed his, beautifully weighting a cross to Karavasil, who slammed another superb header past the keeper and this time into the net in the 55th minute. Pascoe Vale didn’t bow down though, equalising once more in the 75th to leave the last quarter-hour of regulation to decide a champion. Thunder’s midfield contingent pushed the ball for one last drive deep into Pascoe Vale territory, with Nicholas Farrell connecting with the matchwinner after getting loose from a great chip over the top. The defenders shouldn’t be overlooked either as Dhruv Rodrigues Chico, Wahedullah Ataei and the keeper
TAKING his football to the peak of the junior ranks, Dandenong Stingray Josh Battle has worked his way into an illustrious 2016 draft-prospect program. Battle, 16, from Berwick has split his time between the Dandenong Stingrays, Haileybury College and Doveton Football Club this year and will soon add another side to an already jam-packed schedule – the AFL Academy. It makes for a power-packed 2016 as the 190cm (and growing) forward prospect has impressed throughout his time in the junior system. When Josh found out he was set to head to America for a high-performance training camp later this year, it proved a satisfying end to a turbulent 2014 performance. “It was pretty good Henry (Paul Henriksen) the Vic Country coach

Leigh Karavasil beats the keeper with this header, setting up the first goal. 145179 Lewis Cotsopoulos made a number of sensational stops at the back, especially in the last 15 minutes as Thunder held onto its hard-earned lead. The match had five minutes of injury time to endure and it threatened to boil over as both sides felt the pressure of the moment, but Dandenong was able to fight out the final seconds to claim the championship to go with its league title. “I’m very stoked – it was a very tough final physically, but the boys kept jumping off the ground, they got hit a few times but they kept popping up and you’ve got to give them credit,” Dandenong coach Giabardo said. “I just coach them and guide them, but the boys have the big hearts and the big work-ethic – we started on 6 Janu-
ary with our hard training and here it is, it’s 4 October and it’s been a really long season, but they’re still standing and they deserve it.” Taking the East title wasn’t a cakewalk for the Thunder, fighting back after injury took its toll on the squad, but Giabardo knew his side’s hard work on and off the pitch would prove important in the final. “They’re really good, they’ve worked well as a team all year and that’s what we try to preach – that team ethic, look for someone in a better spot and it paid off,” Giabardo said. “They deserve it.” It was Dandenong’s first title under the NPL banner and Giabardo thought it was fitting to bring the pennant back to George Andrews Reserve.
“First NPL championship for Dandy Thunder and very happy for Dandy Thunder – they’re fantastic colours red and black and the boys thoroughly deserve it and it’s a great club as well,” Giabardo said. DANDENONG THUNDER NPL CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD: Lewis Cotsopoulos (captain), Kane Bentley, Nicholas Farrell, Nathaniel Giabardo, Leigh Karavasil, Alexander Krstic, Adam Kruize, Connor Lewis, Nanthawat Magee, Charlie O’Connell, Druv Rodrigues Chico, Anthony Santoro, George Smethurst, Michael Tucci, Wahedullah Ataei, Sebastian Gueho, Andre Gulbenkian, Thomas Flavelle, Elia Pellerito, Robert Giabardo (coach), George Perpina (assistant coach) and Cheryl Lewis (team manager).

called me and said congratulations you’re part of the AFL Academy – I was pretty stoked,” Battle said. “I wasn’t part of the academy this year as in the Vic Country game last year I did my hamstring in the last game, so it was good to get in there… Blacky (Craig Black) told me I was close and just had to keep working hard.” He’s learning off the best at Haileybury, with Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd helping him assert his forward line presence and kick truly in front of goals, while the TAC Cup system also hones his skills as a prime target in the Dandenong forward-50. Given the plethora of achievements so far – with Vic Country and AFL Academy selections – Battle looks back fondly on his local performance, his senior debut for Doveton this year playing for the same club as his father and brother.
“Playing for Doveton obviously because that’s where my dad – Tony Battle – grew up and played… so that was pretty good,” Battle said. “I was a bit shattered I didn’t get to play with my brother Nick, but he broke his hand so what can you do?” Battle isn’t just an elite junior football prospect though, with cricket also keen to get him into the state ranks, but he went with his gut and chose the life chasing the red leather rather than bowling or batting against it. “Getting invited to try out with Cricket Victoria – I didn’t really go because as soon as I found out I had made the academy then I was going to give cricket away,” Battle said. “I always loved footy, but when I started going well at cricket it was a pretty hard decision – cricket was opening up – but then I just sat down with my dad and he said “do what you really love” and I chose footy.”
Myles Poholke has also been selected for the Academy in the Level Two squad while under-age Stingrays Aaron Darling, Hunter Clark, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Oscar Clavarino were picked for the Level One squad. Dandenong Stingrays’ coach Craig Black thought Battle AFL Academy selection showed just how capable he is as a footballer and how valuable it is to have him slot back into the TAC Cup side approaching finals. “I think Josh’s games when he’s played for us this year – only played about four or five games this year – every game he’s played he put his best foot forward,” Black said. “Great hands, kicks it well and we’re excited to have him back in our side. “It’s great reward for these guys that work hard to get to go to the AFL Academy.”
THE field for the 138th running of the $3,150,000 Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400 metres) will be decided following final declarations, carrying a fee of $24,750, at 10am on Tuesday 13 October. At the third acceptances on 6 October, 38 horses remained in the race, including five internationally-trained horses and all are in the top 20 in the order of entry. The field limit is 18 horses and four emergencies. The Japanese will this year be represented by Fame Game and Hokko Brave, both trained by Yoshitada Munakata and the latter to be ridden by Craig Williams. Fame Game is considered to be the best horse to come here from Japan and in May finished second to Japanese superstar, Gold Ship in the Tenno Sho at Kyoto and is TAB favourite for both cups. The other internationals paid up for on 6 October are Snow Sky, Trip To Paris, to be ridden by Hugh Bowman, and Quest For More. Quest For More, to be ridden by Tommy Berry, a Northumberland Plate winner and second in the Goodwood Cup, is 20th in the order of entry but should gain a start. Trip To Paris won the Ascot Gold Cup in June and Snow Sky won the Hardwicke Stakes and is top weight for the Caulfield Cup. He is likely to be ridden by Damien Oliver. Magnapal, prepared at Stawell by Terry and Karina O’Sullivan, qualified by winning the Naturalism Stakes and has just 50kg. Our Ivanhowe from the stables of Lee and Anthony Freedman, won the Grosser von Preis Bayern, a Group 1 over 2400 metres in Germany last November. He ran second in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington and will be much better for two Australian runs. Victoria Derby and Turnbull Stakes winner, Preferment, is a possible starter but may be saved for the Cox Plate. Hauraki, Rising Romance and Set Square are coming along well and will be definite chances. Top trainer Chris Waller has announced riders for his team and Glen Boss will ride Royal Descent, Jim Cassidy Grand Marshall, Glyn Schofield Beaten Up and Blake Shinn Who Shot Thebarman. A lot of attention will centre on the $500,000 Group 3 Ladbrokes Caulfield Classic (2000 metres), which was formerly the Norman Robinson Stakes. While most attention centres on Saturday there is a strong meeting at Caulfield on Wednesday with the $350,500 Catanach’s Jewellers Blue Sapphire (1200 metres) the feature event. Also on the program is the $150,750 Group 3 Nine West Ladies Day Vase (1600 metres).

Rangers ready to excite By JARROD POTTER “EXCITING” basketball is set to dominate the WNBL court at Dandenong this season. Unveiled at the season launch on Wednesday night, held at major sponsor Jayco’s Dandenong headquarters, the entire squad is ready for the 2015/16 WNBL season, starting this weekend. Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson, who will make her WNBL coaching debut this weekend against UC Capitals, said that while the pre-season results – three emphatic wins and a draw – were promising, it was the side’s chemistry that impressed her most. “You don’t read too much into pre-season games because everyone is unprepared and it’s been a very rushed pre-season,” Anderson said. “For me, it’s the process that we’ve gone through and there are good signs every week and every session we’re improving and every game we’re improving. “They’re a very, very exciting group, they’re very close, the chemistry is fantastic – anything can happen when a group just generally enjoys being together and works so hard. “The word exciting has been used a lot tonight (Wednesday), but that does describe it well – the coaches, players and the club are very excited for the season to come.” The club also announced its 2015/16 co-captains – a pair of extremely familiar faces around Dandenong Basketball Stadium. Reaching the peak of their Dandenong basketball journeys – starting as juniors rising through the VJBL ranks – were co-captains Aimie Clydesdale and Steph Cumming, both from Endeavour
Hills, who were unanimously voted in by the playing group. “That was unanimous and for me I looked at it and thought it was really special – the fact that both of them have grown up at the stadium pretty much, literally grown up at the stadium before domestic and under-12s,” Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson said. “Whenever they started – at the age of seven or eight – they’ve grown up in this stadium and never played for anyone else in their junior careers and I think that’s wonderful and they’ll do a fantastic job.” Alison Downie was officially announced as the final member of the squad, with the three-time WNBL championship player making her return to the green-and-gold after a one-year hiatus. Dandenong will fly up to Canberra this weekend to battle the University of Canberra Capitals – featuring Australian basketball doyenne Lauren Jackson and champion tall Abby Bishop. Tip off is 7pm on Saturday. The first Dandenong home game is the following Friday night against WNBL newcomers South East Queensland. “Get behind the Rangers – they’re an exciting group,” Anderson said. “There will obviously be some tough times and some challenges like every team faces, but one thing all the fans can guarantee is that they’ll give 100 per cent every single week and we’d love the support.” DANDENONG JAYCO RANGERS 2015/16 SQUAD Larissa Anderson (coach), #5 – Aimie Clydes-
Dandenong Rangers launched their 2015/16 WNBL season on Wednesday, unveiling the completed roster for the first time. 145347 dale, #8 – Stephanie Cumming (co-captains), #1 – Tegan Cunningham, #4 – Annalise Pickrel, #9 – Jacinta Kennedy, #10 – Chloe Bibby, #11 – Lauren Scherf, #12 – Alison Downie, #13 – Alex Bunton, #14 – Amelia Todhunter,

Downie thrilled to be back on her favourite side DANDENONG mainstay Alison Downie is as keen as ever to hit the court for a 15th season after her one-season hiatus from her beloved WNBL side. She never contemplated hanging up the famous number 12 WNBL jersey in her time away from the summer competition, with the 305game veteran keen as ever to make an impact. “It’s exciting – there was a point where I thought I was never going to come back but I guess last year when I had the season off I hadn’t retired,” Downie said. “I wanted to reiterate that to everyone – ’cause I do love it and I love Dandenong and wanted to come back so it’s really exciting for me that I’m back.” A European vacation and plenty of time to unwind throughout last summer has reinvigorated Downie’s desire to get on court. She excelled in this season’s SEABL competition, playing a significant role in Dandenong taking its fourth championship in six years.
But for the WNBL side of life at Dandenong, Downie will have plenty of rebounding support this season from a fleet of tall inclusions. She’ll be joined by Australian Opal Sara Blicavs, centre Alex Bunton and one of Downie’s returning championship team mates Jacinta Kennedy, who will all give sides a lot of headaches in the key. “Huge – I was saying to Tegan (Cunningham) in the photos that I’m the short one now,” Downie said. “It’s never happened and it’s really exciting to have some genuine talls ’cause we’ve been lacking that for a few years now.” Getting to play for long-time WNBL team mate, SEABL coach and at times staunch opponent Larissa Anderson didn’t influence her decision to return, but Downie admitted it has always been her great pleasure to run out in her sides throughout the years. “I really love playing for Larissa – I’ve said that from day dot,” Downie said. “I’ve played with her and against her – didn’t like that so much – but
to play with her then have her coach me and for her to want me is a really nice feeling and we’ve got a lot of history. “She’d be on me all SEABL season – I’ve always loved to play for Dandenong and really enjoyed playing for Mark (Wright) too, just happened that it was the year I had the season off and after 300 games and 14 years in a row, it’s alright to have a break. “It helped that Larissa was signed on as I was talking to her every week and seeing her every week and it’s good to have her.” Anderson believed Downie is the exclamation mark on a strong roster and her experience and tenacity will prove invaluable for the young Rangers roster. “She is that last piece of the jigsaw puzzle for us because we have got such a young team,” Anderson said. “She just gets out there and gets it done – whatever she has to do at any cost. “Someone who can get it done and has the experience, and is com-

pletely and utterly selfless in everything she does and she epitomises Dandenong. “We’ve put this team together and she’s not just a full stop, but an exclamation mark – and for me, too, obviously with the journey we’ve had together over the years, it’s very special for me to have her here.” Downie and her Rangers tip off the season on Saturday night in Canberra.
