A TWO-hectare fire in Yellingbo that took 60 firefighters some hours to contain was caused by a smouldering burn-off from two weeks ago, according to Yellingbo’s CFA Captain. On Tuesday 6 October, CFA crews from the Upper Yarra area and through the Dandenong Ranges were called out to a fire on Yellingbo-Macclesfield Road in Yellingbo. The fire was called in at 1.39pm, after Yellingbo CFA Captain Paul Spinks said a burn-off from two weeks ago flared up in hot, dry and windy weather. Describing the incident as a “freak accident”, Capt Spinks said that a house was immediately threatened by the blaze, and crews scrambled to its defence. “It appeared it started from a burn from two weeks prior with green waste,” he said. “The owners certainly believed it was dormant and that it was all out – it was just terrible luck. “It did threaten a house very quickly within the first half-hour – with Yellingbo and Macclesfield’s appliances, we maintained protection of the house.” Crews from Yellingbo, Macclesfield, Wandin, Seville and the Dandenong Ranges group of fire brigades rushed to the scene, with 15 vehicles and about 60 firefighters on the scene. Capt Spinks said the fire was contained to two hectares within the first half-hour, and praised the quick action of the local brigades for preventing the fire from getting worse. “Even the firefighting models showed this could escalate, based on the area and the temperature,” he said. “The quick response, quick thinking, water conservation and firefighting technique is what actually contained this fire. “It was a fantastic effort by the CFA crews – it wouldn’t have been contained if it wasn’t for them.” At the time of the fire, the temperature in the Yarra Valley was in the midthirties, with hot northerly winds coming through. By 2pm, the CFA had issued a Watch and Act warning for the sur-

By JODIE SYMONDS A FORMER Wesburn resident plans to take her teaching career to new heights in South America. Stephanie Carroll, 22, will be holding a fund-raising day at the Sam Knott Hotel in Wesburn on 22 November. The fund-raiser aims at raising enough money for Ms Carroll to fly to Ecuador, South America to take part in an organisation called the Volunteer Eco Students Abroad (VESA). All proceeds raised will contribute to flying her to Ecuador, purchasing learning materials and basic essentials for the children, providing fresh running water and addressing other major issues in the community. Ms Carroll said she would be doing community work to also help teach English and improve the schools there, including assisting with building and refurbishing schools and amenities blocks. “I think it’s a good opportunity because I’m a bit naive I guess, so it will definitely open my eyes.” Ms Carroll said her time in Ecuador would also help when she completed her Bachelor of Arts/Secondary Teaching Degree at Deakin University and became a qualified teacher. “Australia is becoming such a multicultural place that I think this experience will really help me teach the students one day,” Ms Carroll said. The event will have raffles, auctions and live entertainment at the fund-raiser for the whole family to enjoy.

Throat burnt after hot sauce dare HEALESVILLE police officers are warning teenagers against a hot sauce dare which saw a Healesville boy taken to hospital earlier this month. Leading Senior Constable Chris Hickey told the Mail that on Wednesday, 30 September, a 12-year-old Healesville boy was dared to drink “extremely hot” chilli sauce straight from the bottle. He said the boy burnt his throat

Water pump stolen, witnesses wanted HEALESVILLE police are asking for witnesses to come forward, after a water pump was stolen from a Badger Creek property last month. Between Monday 31 August and Wednesday 21 September, a water pump was stolen from underneath a house on Badger Creek Road in Badger Creek. Healesville Police Sergeant Stewart Thomson has asked for anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00. Sgt Thomson said the theft was a “timely reminder” for residents to keep firefighting equipment secure as the fire season drew closer. “People get their trailers, park them in the front yard of the house ... ready to rock and roll, and offenders are driving in, hooking up the trailers and going,” he said. “Obviously, be prepared, but be conscious of the security of your property as well, because they’re a valuable asset – they can be the difference between life and death.” Sgt Thomson said chains and padlocks or trailer locks were both effective ways of deterring wouldbe thieves.
Disqualified driver caught drink driving A TOOLANGI woman is expected to front court after being caught driving in the Toolangi State Forest drunk while disqualified over the grand final long weekend. Victoria Police announced on Sunday that State Highway Patrol police patrolling the Toolangi State Forest on Saturday 3 October, pulled over three four-wheel-drives, driven by two men and a woman, all from Toolangi. The Toolangi woman, a 49-yearold, was found to be disqualified from driving, and returned a positive preliminary breath test. After being taken to the Kinglake police station, the woman returned a reading of 0.194 per cent Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) – nearly four times the legal limit for fullylicensed drivers. She is expected to be charged on summons for disqualified and drinkdriving.

Burglar's sour note A MUSICALLY-inclined burglar is being sought by police after a burglary in Coldstream earlier this month, with $4000 worth of gear stolen. Between 1am and 12pm on Saturday, 3 October, thieves smashed a window to a barn that had been converted to a music studio. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Pat Barrow, said that computer and music equipment was stolen in the burglary. A Korg synthesiser, a Virus synthesiser and a Saffire sound card were among the items taken, and with a total value of $4000. Anyone who may have seen any suspicious behaviour or who has any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Facelift for roadside ribbons WOORI YALLOCK’S Kooweerup Road has got a new look, with thousands of native plants recently planted. About 5000 plants have been put in as part of the Ribbons of Green program run by Yarra Ranges Council. The program is aimed at providing Woori Yallock with an improved look that will create an environment for locals and visitors to enjoy. Yarra Ranges councillor Jim Child said the council had a meeting with VicRoads and WYTAG to organise the program in Woori Yallock. Secretary of The Woori Yallock Township Action Group (WYTAG) Beverley Croke said the new plants would help give residents pride in where they lived. “To look out onto (the plants) rather than the long grass will make residents want to keep our town neat and tidy,” Ms Croke said. Ms Croke wrote in a letter to Yarra Ranges Council that the project would enhance the environmental approach to the township. Cr Child said the program was a clas-
YARRA Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy has hit out at vandals who stole a picnic table and chairs from Healesville’s Everard Park last month. The council announced on Thursday 8 October that its parks and bushlands team discovered the table and chair gone last week during regular maintenance. A metal gate had been cut open at the park, off the Maroondah Highway, and it appeared the thieves had unbolted the table and chair from a concrete base. Cr McCarthy said that stealing the chairs was a “low act”, and “shameful behaviour”. “This is disgusting and desperate behaviour, for someone to stoop so low as to remove a table and chairs from a park,” she said. “It’s this kind of anti-social attitude that wrecks things for other people and costs council and, in turn, residents.” Healesville police Senior Constable Kirsty Swankie said the chair and table were stolen over the weekend of Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, though the theft was only reported on Wednesday 7 October. Anyone with information on the theft, who saw any suspicious activity, or who has a friend with a new outdoor setting bolted into the ground, should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to www. crimestoppersvic.com.au
and was taken to Healesville Hospital’s clinic for treatment, and that others may be doing the same for a dare. “Police have information that it seems to be a dare among young kids these days,” Leading Sen Const Hickey said. Leading Sen Const Hickey warned that, in the wrong circumstances, drinking straight chilli sauce could cause an allergic reaction or close airways. “It could be fatal to the wrong child,” he said. He said that some chilli sauces were not sold to minors due to the potential danger of such a reaction.

You can find out more about preparing for the fire season on the council’s website www.yarraranges. vic.gov.au/fireready. There are also helpful hints and tips on the CFA’s website www.cfa. vic.gov.au. As summer is fast approaching, there is another safety message I’m keen to share. As families will soon be enjoying trips to the beach, lakes and rivers as well as spending time in the backyard pool, I would like to remind everyone to be vigilant with children around water. It only takes a moment for a tragedy to occur and a lifetime of devastating consequences.

LIGHT the Night in Lilydale was a success and raised thousands of dollars for cancer research and support. The Mail reported last week that hundreds of people showed their support at the Light the Night walk at Lillydale Lake in Lilydale on 2 October. Hundreds of red, gold and white lanterns were lit at sunset to show support and raise much-needed funds for blood cancer research. The event is in its second year, with plans of another walk in 2016. Organiser of the event, Brian Hodgson said this year’s walk was spectacular. “We have raised over $23,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation, Mr Hodgson said. The reason Mr Hodgson got involved in the event was because blood cancer hits home with him. “My sister-in-law is a blood cancer survivor so she was the main reason I wanted to be a part of this, he said. He said that Steven Hicks, a blood cancer survivor spoke, as well as Member for Evelyn Christine Fyffe who officially opened the event. “It really was an event to not only raise awareness and money for such a good cause, but to also provide a sense of community and a place where people can come together to share stories, Mr Hodgson said. “I also would like to thank everybody that donated, and everybody that got involved in such a good cause, More than 3200 people are expected to be diagnosed with a

OUR early introduction to summer last week was a timely reminder of the need to be fire ready. With predictions of a hot and dry summer, and the reality of bushfires in early October, don’t leave it any longer - make sure you are prepared. Ensure your gutters are empty and make sure that grass, leaves, bark and twigs are removed from
around your home, shed and garages. Just because you’re not living in the forest doesn’t mean you’re free from fire risk. Many urban areas of the Yarra Ranges have significant risk because they have grass, bush or parkland around them. As we know from the events of last week, the weather can change conditions quickly and fire is unpredictable. Make sure you have a written and practiced your fire plan that your whole family is familiar with. Think about what your trigger is to leave, where you will go and what you will take with you.

When the pain won’t stop By JESSE GRAHAM AND JODIE SYMONDS A TEENAGER was killed and eight others were hospitalised last Tuesday night in a single-car crash in Mount Evelyn, with police investigating the circumstances. Police believe that a black, 1998 Holden Commodore was travelling south on Hereford Road, Mount Evelyn, at 6.15pm on Tuesday, 6 October, when the driver, a 22-year-old Mount Evelyn woman, lost control and crashed the car into a pole. In a media conference on Wednesday, 7 October, Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) Sergeant Gerard Clanchy said that a 16-year-old girl was killed in the crash. All of the other occupants of the car, including an 18-year-old man, a 22-year-old man, a 23-year-old woman, a 26-year-old woman, a 16-yearold girl and a 21-year-old man on the
back seat, were injured and taken to various hospitals. Det Sen Sgt Clanchy said the girl who was killed was sitting on the lap of a 26-year-old man, who was in the passenger seat and is in a critical condition. The driver was on her Probationary 2 (green P-plate) licence, and was taken to the Alfred Hospital with lifethreatening injuries. Other media outlets have named the driver as 22-year-old Emily Toulson, a former Healesville resident, and the deceased as 16-year-old Amber Beard. In the days following the crash, Amber’s Facebook page was flooded with heartfelt messages from grieving friends. Victoria Police and Det Sen Sgt Clanchy were unable to confirm the names of those involved in the crash. Det Sen Sgt Clanchy said the Commodore allegedly went around a bend

losing their lives under any circumstances is a waste to the community, and obviously very tragic for the families involved.” The car had no registration plates at the time of the crash, and Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable (LSC), Scott Lardner said the car was allegedly seen around Lilly-
dale Lake before the incident, LSC Lardner said the car was on an unregistered vehicle permit at the time. “Realistically, it’s been used outside of those conditions – but that’s the least of the worries at this time,” he said. “We were obviously concerned with getting the young people out and getting them medical attention.” Describing the crash as like a “TAC ad”, LSC Lardner said there had been a “huge” ripple effect, on the families of those involved in the crash and the neighbours who came to help those in the car. Det Sen Sgt Clanchy said that passengers were spoken to on the night, and that “evidence” of alcohol was in the car, but that no charges had yet been laid. He praised the efforts of neighbours who put out a fire in the car after the crash and said their actions may have saved the occupant’s lives.
Box Hill’s campus bid in the mix BOX Hill Institute could be the taker for Lilydale’s former Swinburne campus, with an announcement about the campus on the horizon, according to the government. Box Hill Institute Group CEO, Norman Gray, told the Mail on Wednesday, 7 October that the organisation had “participated“ in the Expressions of Interest (EOI) process for the campus, which closed down in mid-2013. He said the group’s vision for the site was “innovative and exciting“, and went beyond the requirement of
opening the campus for TAFE and higher education. “We propose to transform it into a comprehensive education precinct for the community that truly encompasses life long learning - from early childhood to higher education and beyond,“ Mr Gray said. Box Hill Institute opened a campus in Lilydale at the start of the year near the former Swinburne campus, though Mr Gray did not indicate whether this campus would move to the Swinburne site if approved. A spokesperson for Training and Skills Minister, Steve Herbert, told the Mail on 25 September that the
Victorian Government expected to make an announcement about the EOI process “soon”. The spokesperson said the government was “on track to reopen the site next year”, and said the government had made a $10 million election commitment to re-open the site for TAFE and higher education. They said the campus was “mothballed” by the former Liberal Government. Mr Herbert said said at the announcement of the EOI process on 15 June that classes would be running out of the site as of early-2016. Evelyn MP, Christine Fyffe, said
that she would be waiting for the announcement. “I’m waiting, I’m waiting,” she said. “I wish they would, so that the students, who are planning further education next year, will know what’s on offer. “They have to start making their applications – they’ll be talking to career advisors – it’s all done before exams start.” Responding to the claim that the former government had “mothballed” the site, Ms Fyffe said the decision to close the campus was Swinburne's alone.

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian, 12 October 1935 Magnificent Views, Tallest Timber OVERSEAS visitors have pronounced the mountain scenery in the Marysville district the finest in Australia, many have said in the world. Marysville is a quiet retreat in the heart of the Great Dividing Range, located on the lower slopes of Mt Kitchener. It is the centre of innumerable tourist attractions and beauty spots, including Lady Talbot Drive, Steavenson’s Falls, Keppel’s Falls, Taggerty River, the Acheron Way, Cora Lynn Falls, Lake Mountain and the Cumberland Valley, home of the hardwood trees. A great many of the giant beautiful mountain ash have disappeared, but in the heart of the celebrated Cumberland Valley there has been preserved a small area on which grow magnificent specimens of these wonderful trees which are among the tallest in the world. Some of these trees are more than 200 feet tall. Healesville Social Chatter I DON'T know whether other people feel

as I do – maybe something to do with the spring – but one feels tired and headachy these days, bored with life and we wish ourselves in some far distant clime where blustering north winds and dust storms are not. But as we cannot get away we must put a bright, clean face on it. If your head is inclined to ache, I would recommend rising a little earlier than usual and doing some deep-breathing exercises before you open the window. The fresh air will penetrate your lungs and incidentally your circulation and will give you a wonderfully fresh start for the day. Warburton Mail, 15 October 1965 Two New Subdivisions TWO new sub-divisions at present in the throes of construction within the Shire of Upper Yarra contain a total of 176 building blocks between them. One is Panorama Sub-division on the Lilydale side of Launching Place and the other is on steep land near the Millgrove Railway crossing. The Panorama division is being constructed by E.T. McColl, a dairy farmer of Launching Place and consists of 126 blocks.
The Millgrove division is being constructed by the Garner Brothers of Melbourne and consists of 50 blocks. The Millgrove division will have concrete channelling and sealed roads and the Panorama division will have drains and metal roads. A sub-division consisting of 158 blocks planned for McMahon’s Creek had been abandoned about two years ago when council had made it a requirement that full construction of streets must be carried out by the sub-divider. Meters swipe not smart IN RESPONSE to our local member's letter to the ‘Mail’ (6 October, ‘Smart meters ... they’re back’). Am I not mistaken, but was not the local member in government for four years and in this time did she actually do anything on smart meters. A quick search of Hansard appears to suggest not. What it does show is that our local member is prepared to jump up and down and scream loudly while in opposition, but once reaching government achieves little. Do we really have to put up with the complaining for the next three years, or can we actually try to get some results for our local community? Peter Harris, Chirnside Park.
Important to check levy RESIDENTS in the Evelyn electorate, if you haven’t already done so, please check your rate notices for the actual increase in the Fire Services Property Levy (FSL). The Opposition has identified a number of increases well above CPI which means the Andrews Government has broken a promise. The Andrews Government promised to keep the FSL to increases in state taxes and CPI or below. Labor’s first budget this year showed that they intended to increase state wide FSL collections by 7.2 per cent, costing Victorians an additional $42 million. However, actual increases after people have compared their
rates notices show that the increase is more than 10 per cent. Yet the government remains silent, hoping you won’t notice. Under the former Coalition Government the FSL was changed from an expensive insurance based tax to a fairer property based tax that meant all landowners contributed to the cost of supporting our fire services. Don’t let the Andrews Government get away with it. If you live in the Evelyn electorate and believe you have been price gouged by the Andrews Government, please bring your copies of your rates notices to my office at 143 Main St, Lilydale. Aldi a welcome addition IT IS excellent news to see that Aldi is intending to establish a store in Healesville. There has been a distinct lack of competition for many years, and residents have had to suffer high prices at Coles, or as we do, travel to Aldi in Lilydale. I sincerely hope that the local ‘minority’ group of narrowminded, self-important people who protest against any change or development in town, remain silent on this issue. This group lost our post office due to their irrational and illogical protests, leaving us with a second-rate and inefficient postal service. Reasonable development is necessary, and the resulting jobs and competition will be of great benefit to Healesville. Terry Draper, Badger Creek.

Grand final blitz gets results By JESSE GRAHAM

Kickstart for our hearts By JODIE SYMONDS TWO defibrillators are now accessible around Wandin and Seville for emergency situations. The defibrillators were donated by the Golden Opportunity Shop in Wandin as part of their community donations for the year 2014'15.
They are located at Seville IGA, Warburton Highway Seville and Wandin Motors Warburton Highway Wandin at the roundabout. Secretary of the shop committee, Glenda Fraser, says she just wants to get the message out to the community that they are accessible if needed. “We wanted to pick a place that was on the highway so that people
could easily access them, but we also didn’t want them to be so accessible that they get vandalised,” she said. The defibrillators cost about $2000 each, and she said the shop just wanted to give back to the community. “Well, in reality you hope that they are never important because
you never want them to be used,” she said. “But unfortunately, one day they will have to be and that is why we have put them in those locations where they are easily accessible.” Glenda said she would also like to thank the Bendigo Community Bank for their help in providing the community with these resources.
IT WAS a surprising Grand Final long weekend for the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol, with more than 100 drivers flouting the law despite a welladvertised police blitz. Over the Grand Final long weekend, Friday 2 October-Sunday 4 October, police in the Yarra Ranges detected 156 traffic offences, 106 of which were for speeding alone. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant, John Morgan said he was surprised by the results, due to how well police had advertised their road blitz across the state. “We set up a little laser-sight in Maroondah Highway, outside McDonalds (Lilydale) on the Sunday morning – and it’s pretty well-publicised that there’re coppers all over the road,” Sgt Morgan said. “We got 16 in just two hours, and we ended up getting 38 for the shift – that included nine people for driving unregistered, two or three for driving while disqualified and a couple for driving while unlicensed. “It surprises you, that it’s so well-publicised and that people just continue to speed as if they’re not going to get caught.” One of the more notable cases came when police detected a driver on Swansea Road in Mount Evelyn and detected him travelling at 86 kilometres per hour in a 60 kilometre zone. “He was all over the road,” Sgt Morgan said. “We pulled him over and we realised straight away that he was drunk. “We impounded his car for 28 days, we served an immediate licence suspension to him and he’ll be going to court for some very serious charges.” He said the man, a 59-year-old Heathmont man, returned a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .190 – almost four times the legal limit for fullylicensed drivers, and is expected to lose his licence for four years. Over the weekend, four drivers were caught for drink driving; four were booked for drug driving, though Sgt Morgan said the statistics may be higher due to late reporting. and I’d encourage people to run,” he said. “The more they want to get involved in the community, the better.” Yarra Ranges CEO, Glenn Patterson said he would “welcome the opportunity” to attend a community meeting held by Mr Leake. Mr Patterson said his wage was the “average” for Victorian category one local councils, which is surveyed annually by the State Government, and defended the council’s current budget use. “Yarra Ranges Council manages its budget responsibly and is committed to delivering value for money for ratepayers,” he said in a written statement. “The funding program assists community groups to undertake exciting local projects and initiatives developed by, and run for, our local communities,” he said. Mr Patterson said the council’s rate increase of 3.3 per cent for the 2015-'16 financial year was “well below the real cost increase” for the council, and required “significant operational savings” to fill the difference. “If rates were not increased at all there would be enormous cuts to capital works and services provided,” he said. Council rate increases will be capped at the consumer price index (CPI) as of next financial year, though councils can appeal this to the Essential Services Commission.

A YARRA Ranges resident is putting the spotlight on council expenditure, drawing hundreds into a Facebook group and preparing a run for next year’s council elections. Woori Yallock resident, Jeff Leake, is the administrator for the Facebook group, Shire of Yarra Ranges Council Reform Group - where members can air their grievances and discuss solutions to issues with the council. In an interview with the Mail, Mr Leake - who has run for office in state and federal elections - said there were three main issues he wanted to focus on with the council: rates, waste and permits. He said that, in his opinion, council rates should not increase at all, the council should take over control of its waste transfer stations and lower tipping prices, and permit application times should be shorter. However, the council currently leases its transfer stations to Knox Transfer Station, and prices are influenced by the EPA’s landfill levy. When asked if taking back ownership of the transfer stations would be incompatible with lower rates, Mr Leake said the council could trim their budget elsewhere. “It’s incredibly complex, there’s no argument there whatsoever,” he said. “The governments are not short of money, they’re just not spending it wisely - the es-
sential services, kinders, parks and maintenance, street maintenance, all this is really the essential stuff, they should absolutely put it as a priority.” He claimed that cutting the wages of the council’s CEO and council’s community grants programs would also find savings in the budget. Mr Leake said he was organising a public meeting for residents to raise their concerns with council, and would also encourage people to stand for next year’s council election in every ward. Chandler Ward councillor and deputy mayor, Jason Callanan said that he had seen the group himself, and while he empathised with their view, said council was often in a “balancing act” with its budget. “I’ve had a look at the comments on there, and I would have agreed with a lot of those comments prior to getting into council,” he said. “There are things I didn’t even know, and opened my eyes to understand the complexity of council - it’s not as simple as just lowering rates. “Something small moved here can create massive waves in another area, and it’s very much a balancing act.” He added that the council’s main revenue came from a “fixed sum” of rates, rather than from parking fees and fines. Cr Callanan said he encouraged passionate residents to run for the October 2016 council elections. “Everybody can have a go

Treated like a family member DR JIM Bokas, Dr Kylie Moseling and the friendly team are (B) Orthodontics. They offer a range of orthodontic treatment for both adults and children. Early intervention treatment for younger patients that might prevent damage to the teeth or gums and reduce the complexity of future treatment is provided in appropriate cases. Full or partial braces in either metal or clear options, plates and Invisalign are all available. They also use white wires, which can make the clear braces look even less obvious. They provide real options and a full range of treatment choices for their patients, including considering what might happen over time if no treatment is undertaken, so patients and families can really understand and make an informed choice about their treatment.
They take the time to discuss treatment, with initial appointments taking 30 minutes and the patient spending that entire time with the orthodontist. They then provide a detailed letter, which the patient can use at home or with friends to further discuss treatment. They don’t rush patients to decide immediately on treatment. They also provide a letter to the patient’s dentist so they can ensure all members of the dental team are working together. Kylie and Jim personally treat every patient individually. Orthodontics is like any other field of medicine, no two patients are exactly the same and no treatment plan is identical. (B) Orthodontics has been seeing patients in Lilydale since early 2015, but also has of-
fices in Burwood East and Doncaster. Kylie and Jim have been working together in these locations since 2005. When they opened their first practice in Burwood East, they decided their motto would be ‘fun, friendly and informative’. They wanted to show patients that orthodontics wasn’t scary and to create an experience that was as enjoyable as possible. They want their patients and families to be comfortable with them and their staff and to feel they can ask any questions. When providing treatment, their guiding principle is “if this was a member of our family, what would we do“. They aim to look after their patients the way we would treat their own children or brothers and sisters. Kylie graduated from her Masters in Orthodontics in 2002 and Jim in 2003. They
have worked both as consultants at the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne, as well as in private practice. Patients can feel confident of receiving quality treatment and care from our orthodontists, whose knowledge and experience is regularly kept up to date. Jim and Kylie are registered specialist orthodontists, and both lecture for the University of Melbourne. To ensure the highest levels of care, Kylie and Jim work with a highly qualified and well-trained team. Their nursing assistants at Lilydale, Melissa and Caitlin, are both qualified dental nurses who have significant experience in both dentistry and orthodontics, while their practice manager Alycia has been with the team for many years. Payment plans, typically comprising a deposit and 20 monthly payments, are provided to all patients.

Heritage comes back for more By JESSE GRAHAM THE Healesville Heritage Festival is coming back for another year, bringing vintage cars and historic exhibitions to the Healesville Railway Station this weekend. The Heritage Festival will be held at the station on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October and will give visitors a look back over the past 150 years. Vintage cars and trucks will be brought in to the station for the festival, which will accompany industrial engines and railway vehicles. Historic crafts and trades will be on display, as well as ex-
hibitions from the community. Children will be well-provided for, with food and drinks, a model railway depicting the Yarra Valley Railway and the railway’s own Walker railmotor running trips up to the Tarrawarra tunnel each half hour. But old machines aren’t the only things on display – interesting vehicles of all kinds will be on show, including Peter and Linda Dickenson’s pink tractor, painted for breast cancer awareness, and their rare double-doe Ferguson tractor, which has two tractor bodies end-to-end. A replica Locomobile steam-powered car will also be at the festival, along with local
historical vehicles, such as a McKenzie’s 1948 school bus. The Healesville Heritage Festival will be held from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 17 October and from 10am-5pm on Sunday 18 October. Entry is $10 for adults, $5 for children aged three to 16 and children under three will receive free entry. Dogs must remain on leads at all times, although the event’s website said dogs are not recommended as loud noises from heritage displays may startle them. For more information, visit www.healesville-heritage-festival.com. Peter and Patricia Culhane, with Alex Lagerwey, are gearing up for the Healesville Heritage Festival later this month. 145124 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM

TWO school friends will go a little ‘Hollywood’ this month as they prepare to debut their documentaries. As part of their school curriculum, the Little Yarra Steiner School students were asked to complete an independent project throughout the year, in which they sought out and received advice from a mentor. Year 12 students Marlee Nebauer, 18, and Amanda Merilainen-Beca, 18, chose film as the medium for their projects. Marlee drew on her experiences while living in Africa, while Amanda sought to explore the subject of body language in dogs. Marlee spent time living with a Maasai tribe and in her

documentary she explores the differences in love and relationships between Western culture and Africa. “In Africa, men can marry multiple partners, whereas the women can only have one partner,” she said. “Jealousy, particularly in Western culture, can be a very different thing.” Marlee said the favourite part of the production process was developing the soundtrack, because she is a musician. She plays guitar and sings, along with being a regular fixture on the local busking scene. Meanwhile, Amanda said the content and inspiration for her film came smoothly, but did find the production aspect a little harder.
“The film explores how dogs communicate, particularly the language barriers they experience when communicating with people,” she said. “Hopefully, this will make people aware of signs about when dogs may feel threatened or may attack.” Some of her personal experiences were drawn on for the film, including when she adopted a dog, although she had two existing dogs and socialisation was a challenge. The films will be shown back-to-back at the Memo in Healesville on Friday, 23 October, from 6pm to 9pm. Both students hope to get as many people as possible to support their achievements and welcome the community to attend.

WHO would have thought a film about an astronaut (Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon) stranded on Mars would be one of the most uplifting movies of the year? In a year (more like a decade) of predominantly dark, dour blockbusters, The Martian is unique in how joyful and good-humoured it is. Damon carries much of the
film with his affable larrikin charisma alone. Watney makes frequent wisecracks about his desolate situation but these are organic to the story as another way for him to stay alive and sane. Watney must constantly deal with the sheer isolation and hazards of being stranded alone on Mars, which maintains heavy suspense. But this naturally tense atmosphere has the added benefit of making every accomplishment – from Watney growing potatoes in Martian soil to rigging communication with Earth
through the old Pathfinder rover – feel like a fist-pumping triumph. The Martian isn’t just about perseverance and surviving against the odds; it’s an intimately personal yet solar system-spanning epic about human ingenuity, exploring a new frontier and Earth pooling its resources together to help someone in need. The Martian is exciting, funny and wonderfully inspiring. Let’s hope this film inspires us to actually send manned missions to other worlds again.

and Woiwurrung language specialist, Mandy Nicholson, who grew up in the Healesville area. Ryrie Ward councillor, Fiona McAllister, who opened the event, said the package was the culmination of years of discussions and was an “incredible resource” for student. Using the example of her one-year-old daughter, Lexi, learning to speak, Cr McAllister said language gave a connection to family, community, and the world. “If one has a connection with words, motivation to learn, to explore, to share and to understand grows,” she said. “These 45 words will open the door to a new world for these children, a world of culture, stories, and connections.” Cr McAllister said she would be purchasing one of the resources to use with her children. Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin, in a Welcome to Country
speech, praised the work of the council in producing the resource and working towards reconciliation. “Today is one of the moments in history I’m glad I lived for,” she said. Ms Nicholson then spoke to the attendees, who had filled the Aunty Dot Peters MultiPurpose Room, and presented a slideshow of each of the language cards while demonstrating the different sounds used when speaking Woiwurrung. The crowd followed along through the presentation, mimicking Ms Nicholson as she explained the translations to Woiwurrung words. The language resource was then provided to some education providers. Council’s co-ordinator of early years development, Anne Monichon, said about 60 packages had been created - though more might be produced in future.

Angels fund-raiser is helping out By PETER DOUGLAS THE Dandenong Ranges community is being encouraged to throw its support behind the Avonsleigh Angels fund-raising dinner this Friday. Held to support the families and friends affected by the tragic accident in Avonsleigh in June this year, the event will be held at the Paradise Valley Hotel at 7pm and features live entertainment and a three-course set menu. Sharn Walker, Felisha Allen and Jason Breakwell lost their lives after their car hit a tree along Phillip Road, Avonsleigh, on the afternoon of 30 June. Their friend Jake Mitchell,
19, survived the crash. Event co-ordinator, Julie Hoffman, said it was important the community came together at difficult times such as this. Over the past few months, the incident has drawn an outpouring of emotion. Many moving tributes have been held around the region, including at this football season’s Emerald versus GembrookCockatoo football match, where the teens all had strong links. The trio also had close ties to the Emerald Football Club and the Emerald Secondary College. Emerald Secondary College has also endured a tough time,
because they were well-known within the school community and both girls were in Year 11. Principal at the time Mike Jaremczuk said after the incident the teens were well-known and popular among their peers. “The two girls were both students here and really wellliked,” he said. “Jason was a student last year ... he was a charismatic kid, well-liked and had many great mates. “It’s a complete tragedy, which will have a big impact on the community.” To book your spot, visit www.trybooking.com/ISLF.

Million-dollar phone call By PETER DOUGLAS FOR most of us, it sounds like the stuff of dreams. But it has become a reality for a retired Healesville man. After failing to check his TattsLotto entry after the weekend’s draw, owing to a bad cold, he was none the wiser he had won a share in first division worth more than $1 million. In a phone call he won’t forget in a hurry, which possibly got him jumping out of his sick bed, a Tatts official contacted him on Tuesday morning. The happy winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased his ticket from Sanctuary Lotto in Healesville.
Store owner, Karl Jones, said he was over the moon because the winner was a local. “It’s only been 10 months since we bought the outlet and we’ve been desperate to sell a big one,” he said. “Here it is - our first division one win. “Of course, we hope it’s the first of many to come for us.” According to the Tatts official who broke the news, the winner was understandably excited, too. He said, “Gee, it must be millions if you’re calling me this morning?” *Please gamble responsibly: For anyone in need of assistance, contact Gambler’s Help on 1800 858 858.
Police say these situations can be avoided if more care is taken when crossing intersections 145470 Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS
Turning into trouble By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS POLICE are asking people to make sure intersections are clear before turning after two cars collided with a truck on the corner of Francis Crescent and Swansea Road in Lilydale Monday morning 12 October. Police said it appeared the Volkswagen Golf and Holden Commodore crashed into each other and then into the truck
during the school rush, just before 9am. Each car had three occupants and the truck had one occupant - with the Volkswagen containing 6-year-old and 10-year-old passengers and the Commodore containing 13-year-old and 16-year-old passengers. While there were no serious injuries caused on the scene, all occupants of the cars were taken to hospital for further checks.
Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol senior constable Aidan Williams said drivers needed to take care when crossing intersections across oncoming traffic. “The message is just don’t cross the intersection until you know it’s clear,” he said. “It’s very lucky no-one was seriously hurt here today and things could have easily been a lot worse.”

Bowlers’ skills are on display By GARRY LEWIS
Colin Voigt with his 30 year-old cricket bat at Launching Place Cricket Ground. 145421
Voigt, 50 years not out at the crease By JODIE SYMONDS PRESENT Launching Place and former Emerald cricketer Colin Voigt is celebrating a remarkable 50 years of cricket. The first time Voigt held a cricket bat was when he was just 11 years old when he was living in Wantirna South. At this time, most of the area around where he lived was farmland and the only thing to do was to play cricket or football. As houses began to be built up, Voigt finished playing for Wantirna South when he was about 18 and moved to Seville. While living in Seville, he joined Emerald Cricket Club.
After marrying and by the time their son was born, Voigt and his wife decided to move to the border of Launching Place and Woori Yallock on a farm, so his son could go to the primary school. At 31 years of age, Voigt began competitive cricket at Launching Place Cricket Club. He said he didn’t want to leave Seville as it was a more established club, but Launching Place was also very new. Upon asking Voigt about the highlights of his remarkable 50 years of cricket, he laughed. “I’ve been very lucky because I’ve never missed a game of cricket due to injuries,” he said.
“The best thing you’ve got in life is your health so I’m pretty fortunate.” Voigt is playing as a D Grader at Launching Place Cricket Club and has been there for the past 31 years. “My batting definitely isn’t what it used to be but I guess that’s old age,” he said. President of Launching Place Cricket Club, Stuart Parker, said the effort and support he has contributed never goes unnoticed. “Everything he’s done for me is always greatly appreciated,” Parker said. Voigt said he is so grateful to be able to have coached juniors. “It’s great seeing young kids get
involved and see how they grow up and improve,” he said. Although he might not play next year, he is still confident he will coach the juniors and be socially involved in the club. He said the game isn’t a ‘no winend all’ situation, but a chance for the club to get together, play some cricket and have fun. “I’ll definitely hang around the club socially but with the upkeep of a farm, it’s hard to be around as often as I used to be,” he said. “The farm definitely keeps me fit.” Launching Place Cricket Club would like to congratulate Colin Voigt on his 50 year milestone.

Warburton golf Bag-day results WEDNESDAY, 7 October: Stroke and M. McGrann ‘Bag-day’: Winner: Gerry-Hadfield, (87 years young!) with a fantastic 65 net. Runner-up: Ossie-McClay, also with 65, but who lost on a countback. Balls went down to 72. N.T.P’s were Craig Brown (3rd), P. Marshall (guest), on the 10th and Alan Johnson (12th). Saturday, 10 October: Stableford - A Grade: Meredith Nursey, with a well-compiled 39 points. (The handicapper ‘must’ catch up with you eventually, Meredith!). B Grade: Leigh Patrick, (35 points). The ball rundown went to 32. N.T.P’s were P.K. on the 3rd, 5th: Noel Cross, 9th: Geoff Hall, 12th: David Murch (again) and the 15th: John Hall. Two matches of note were played on Saturday. Captain, P.K. and his partner, Andy Lockey, played a match against Allan Hubbard and Kevin Conway, in a semi-final of the time-honoured Singer/Walker trophy. In a riveting encounter, the captain and Andy finally won on the 19th hole - playing the extra hole to decide the winners. Well done to all concerned. In another event that is steeped in history, the Harry Martyr singles matchplay, Gary Ward held off a determined Trevor Porter to come out the victor on the 18th hole. These sorts of results are what ‘real’ golf is all about. Congratulations to all those involved on a fine performance all-round.

Slow bowlers take stage By CHRIS ANDERSON AFTER a long, drawn out winter - where Hawthorn supporters were the only winner - cricket was back on the main stage in the Yarra Valley last Saturday. As is always the case, Round 1 saw the cobwebs blown off by the batsmen with most struggling to post significant scores, while the big winners of the day were the slow bowlers, whose patience and guile won the day. Woori Yallock hits the field this season as reigning premiers, and they started with a clinical win against Yarra Junction at home. The Tigers started their title defence in the field and battled hard to remove the Yarra Junction wickets. The standout with the bat for the Eagles was captain Quinton Hodgkinson (44) who has plenty resting on his shoulders this season if the Eagles are to return to finals action this season. He was ably supported by Michael Scott with 22, but the Eagles lacked enough spark and were bowled out for 123. Spinner Ben Hayes (3/16) and opening bowler Simon Young (2/22) were the main protagonists with the ball. Early in the season, any total can be tricky to chase, but the talent of Woori Yallock top order bat Daniel Mock shone through as the former captain sensed the game situation and anchored the chase. With a well-compiled 55no, Mock ensured that while he was at the wicket, the Tigers were no chance of losing this contest. Spinner Keven Bomford (2/21) provided some food for thought for the batsmen, but with captain Michael King chiming in with a valuable 23, Woori Yallock chased down the target with six wickets in hand. Hoddles Creek posted a significant Round 1 victory against a new-look Seville line up. The Wombats batted first, and worked consistently with the bat to post a reasonable total of 150. Warwick Weir (45) provided the backbone to the innings where his experience guided a line-up that provided glimpses of running away with the game, but was continually pegged back by regular wickets.
Andy Kay celebrated his return to cricket, capturing four wickets with his probings spinners, while youngster Mark Sandfort (3/42) provided the early impetus for the Seville bowlers. In return, Seville’s young batting line-up couldn’t manage the skill, and tactical nous, of Hoddles Creek champ Brenton Derix whose five wickets all but rendered the chase over as the Blues stumbled to be all out for 91. It was Kay who again held things together with the bat, but his contribution of 32 wouldn’t be enough. In the final game of DJ Strachan Shield, Healesville stamped their claims to be a more formidable force this season with a well-rounded victory over Mount Evelyn on the road. Healesville batted first and were off to a flyer, courtesy of Michael Jackson (35), but with his wicket, and the run rate slowing, one wondered whether the Bloods would fall into poor habits. The Bloods have recruited well over the off season, and bolstered the top order with some key bats from up the line. Brandon D’Amore (32) showed the value he will have for this line-up as his patient innings held things together for the Bloods through the crucial middle overs, and guided his side to a position on which they could attack. Captain Ash Hamer (38) took up the offer and his quick innings led the visitors to a competitive 166 off the allotted overs. On a quick Mount Evelyn Reserve, the home team entered the chase confident of chasing the runs, but early wickets put the home side on the back foot from which they couldn’t recover. The probing line and lengths of Ben Wallace (3/29) and Dylan Moore (2/16) ensured the Bloods would turn the screws on a struggling Rovers line-up, and despite the youngsters showing fight with the bat, and a fighting innings from Luke Jones (31), the home side never threatened the total, being bowled out in the final over for 113. Although being early days, with back-to-back one dayers next weekend, all sides need to make an impression if they are serious about playing finals. Healesville and Hoddles Creek made the best starts possible in their pursuit of gaining a spot in finals action after disappointing years last season, and both have enough experience in their line-ups
to warrant claims, while Seville and Mount Evelyn will need to usher and develop their young batting line-ups if they are to stay with the main pack. Woori Yallock and Warburton-Millgrove, last year’s grand finalists, look again to be the teams to chase. The final team in DJ Strachan Shield, Yarra Junction, provide the X Factor in the competition with talent that enabled them to reach the grand final two years ago, but if they get it wrong, they miss finals as they did last season. DJ STRACHAN SHIELD Yarra Junction 123 (Q. Hodgkinson 44, M. Scott 22, B. Hayes 3/16, S. Young 2/22) lost to Woori Yallock 4/126 (D. Mock 55no, M. King 23, K. Bomford 2/21), Hoddles Creek 150 (W. Scouting for some golf fresh blood By JODIE SYMONDS IF you’ve ever thought about dusting off the golf clubs, now is a good time to head down to Warburton Golf Club. Membership numbers are at an all-time low and stalwarts are seeking some fresh blood on their beloved course. President Ron Hottes said he believed it was a geographical misunderstanding why their numbers were continuing to decrease. “I think people are under the impression that it’s a whole-day trip to play golf here and it isn’t,” he said. “We’re struggling and we need to get the Upper Yarra Community aware.” The club currently has 150 members and Mr Hottes said about a quarter of those were social members who didn't always play golf regularly. “We are really saddened that it’s just sitting here and not getting used to its full potential,” He said while events such as Warburton Fun Run did bring in casual players or green fee-ers as they were called, it was not enough. Captain Paul Kennedy said they would continue to keep open. “It will definitely be tough,” Mr Kennedy said. A membership at Warburton Golf Club is $990. Young athletes lap up challenge By JAMIE STRUDLEY ALL the fun, colour and noise of track and field athletics returned to Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn, on Saturday morning. The opening round of the Little Athletics summer season started with fantastic numbers in all grades, especially the open boys and girls (13-15 years). This week the club had 70m, 100m, 200m and 1500m on the track and various age groups competing in discus, shot put, long jump, triple jump and high jump events. There were plenty of smiles, laughter and new friendships made on a sensational opening day. The senior athletics team competed in round 1 of the Athletics Victoria AV Shield competition this week at Nunawading. An excellent turnout of athletes had the club recording results in almost every event. A very big welcome to Darcy Price (who broke two club records), Scott Sutton, Jordan Brown, Harry Norman, Michaela Duncan (two records), Ella Strudley, Kathi Hewitson and Tailor Pace. They were all new athletes who competed for the first time at an AV Shield competition. Full results will be available later this week. Next week, the club has its Little Athletics from 8.30am on Saturday. Arrive early to help set up. Just ask how you can help, because there is plenty to do. The seniors next compete in two weeks on 24 October at the home track at Morrison Reserve. Put it in the diary as an opportunity to watch (or compete) in some local athletics. Run, jump, throw ... too easy! For photos, results and updated news, visit yarrarangesathletics.org.au or check out the Facebook page.
