Call to ban gambling advertising which is being blamed for domestic abuse...
Courage to cut By ERIN SOMERVILLE
A LOCAL leader in the fight against domestic violence has called for the end to advertisements that promote gambling. Nan Lepinath, who co-founded of the Border’s domestic violence support group The Courage to Change, said constant advertisements for gambling apps, betting agencies and odds often brought on anxiety in victims that the group supports. “I have had a lady who has told me she really freaks out when she sees gambling ads. It’s like post-traumatic stress, Ms Lepinath said. “They really freak her out because her husband spent $500 a week on gambling and her and her children were left with nothing. “It’s about time they started removing the gambling ads to protect problem gamblers and their families. Ms Lepinath said it was important for people to realise that domestic violence wasn’t just physical abuse but included many other aspects including emotional, spiritual, sexual, mental and financial abuse. She said gambling is a common factor in partners being financially abused with many women on the Border reporting to have suffered at the hands of a partner who was addicted to gambling. The group is also concerned about how accessible gambling has become online. The issue echoes concerns from local support services which told Albury Wodonga News Weekly in March that an increasing number of young people are becoming addicted to gambling through online betting agencies, apps and social media. “It’s too simple and it’s showing

The call to stamp out gambling advertisements comes with reports continuing of constant accommodation shortages on the Border for women, men and families fleeing from all
forms of abusive relationships. Meanwhile, Ms Lepinath and cofounder Penny Le Breton, who are both trained counsellors, are continuing to encourage victims of domestic violence to attend The Courage to Change support groups on Tuesdays at
either 10am to noon or 7pm to 9pm at Mirambeena Community Centre, Lavington. “It’s good to get that one-on-one with others who have suffered domestic violence. Ms Lepinath said that, sadly, wom-

Getting away from hustle and bustle By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHEN it comes to a location that offers great lifestyle, it’s hard to beat the highly soughtafter village of Kensington Gardens. The village’s great location is one of the key aspects of the great lifestyle it can offer residents. With metropolitan-level shopping, sporting and medical facilities, and dining options found in the peaceful, regional setting at Albury Wodonga, residents enjoy living a rich lifestyle without the hustle, bustle, and chaos of the city. Kensington Gardens lies in the heart of Thurgoona- a popular location to call home for many Border residents. With rural views stretching to the bluetinged mountains beyond, Thurgoona is a picturesque place to enhance your lifestyle. Thurgoona itself is the fastest growing area of Albury, and is brimming with options to make your life simpler, stressfree, and promote your well-be-
ing. Many residents enjoy walking to nearby shopping centre to do their groceries, and relish the health benefits they reap when able to ditch the car keys in favour of their feet more often. There are also popular pubs that serve up great meals with entertainment in the area, it is only a short drive to the airport, and direct access to the golf course means it is never hard to get away and have a hit on the green with friends. One of the advantages of living in Kensington Gardens is also the strategic location of living on the Border. Perched between Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney, it’s just a matter of deciding on your destination and pulling out onto the fourlane freeway. It is also ideally located to take advantage of local attractions, all within a short drive. You can relax by the Murray River or Hume Weir, sample the tasty harvest at nearby vineyards, take a step back in time at Beechworth, catch the train to Melbourne for a day of shop-
ping, see the latest exhibition at MAMA, dine on delicious local dishes at nearby restaurants and cafes, or fill your lungs with fresh air at nearby alpine villages or cycling the rail trail. Residents also have peace of mind knowing that Albury Wodonga has many health specialists and excellent modern medical facilities. A big drawcard is the $65 million cancer and wellness centre being constructed in Albury, which will include 30 inpatient beds, 30 -chair day chemotherapy facility, 17 medical and allied health consulting room, an education and training facility, a ‘wellness centre’, two paediatric treatment chairs connected to the current paediatric unit, a PET/CT scanner facility on the Albury Hospital site, a Brachytherapy service for the region, and additional car parking at the Albury Hospital site. With so much on offer right at Kensington Gardens doorstep, it really is the ideal location to call your new home.

Explore village lifestyle feel By ERIN SOMERVILLE
A crowd explores Kensington Gardens at last year’s open day. 145379
Kensington Gardens open days have won over many happy residents in the past. 145379
When security matters
THE secret is finally out about Kensington Gardens, and there is no better time to head out and explore the popular lifestyle village than at its upcoming open day. Tucked away in the tranquil, rural setting of Thurgoona, Kensington Gardens is simply too good not to come and see for yourself. On 24 October, staff and residents will be throwing open their doors to show guests why so many have fallen in love with the village. “It’s a great opportunity to meet the residents and get information from a resident’s perspective,” Kensington Gardens manager Tony Lieschke said. As the word gets out about the first class resort-style living on offer, the wonderful social community, and Kensington Gardens ability to maximise on active retirees’ plans, it is no wonder over-50s are coming from all over to join in on this patch of paradise. This year’s open day will allow guests to see the life they could have in the estate. From tours of the new 36-lot stage six housing development, to browsing the high-quality, modern, and tailor-designed houses, to exploring the great facilities, the guests will have a chance to see it all and imagine themselves living the Kensington Gardens lifestyle dream.
The estate is beautifully manicured and presented, and always will be. The homes are also guaranteed to stay in pristine condition, and while things won’t often go wrong having been built to the highest standard of quality, there is always a friendly pair of hands on call to help with any maintenance problems. On top the beautiful setting, Kensington Gardens also has an undeniably wonderful community atmosphere guaranteed to win over even the hardest of sells. A friendly neighbour or staff member is always around to help out, to catch up for a chat, or to simply start off your day with a smile and wave. The architecturally designed $4.5 million clubhouse gives the over-50s estate a constant resortliving feel, and inside its wonderful staff can help with just about any problem residents may have. When residents do decide to go on holiday, they are assured knowing their home is in safe hands and being cared for. It may sound like an over-50s plan set aside for the rich, but this kind of quality living is affordable for most. Dare to explore all Kensington Gardens has to offer at this month’s Open Day, and simply imagine the wonderful life you could have in this idyllic part of the world. You’ll only wish you had have done it sooner.

Kensington’s demand is growing By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE demand to become a Kensington Gardens resident is growing, and so too is the popular lifestyle village. With its stage six development due to commence in mid-October, it is evident Kensington Gardens continues to win over residents with its great lifestyle and stress-free building process. Stage six boasts 36 house lots to cater to the growing demand for bigger homes and yards. Development has not yet begun, but already interest in stage six has been unprecedented, with almost 30 per cent of the lots already being snapped up by those eager to share in a slice of the fabulous offerings at Kensington Gardens. “These are predominantly larger homes due to the market demand on the south side of the estate,”Kensington Gardens manager Tony Lieschke said. “Some lots open up to views of open farmland and the mountains in their alfresco area.” The estate’s great homes and lot availabilities has driven interest from interstate and lured those liv-
ing in metropolitan areas to enjoy a regional lifestyle. “We have a high demand for larger homes that offer flexibility and design, some are up to four bedrooms, are on larger lots, and have double garages.” It’s the flexibility with design that has won many potential buyers over, being able to put their unique stamp on designs and decor. It’s the small differences like this that make Kensington Gardens stand apart from the competition. With a wide range of colours, styles, tiles, and additional trimmings to choose from that make a home unique, buying and building in Kensington Gardens is a delightful journey for many. “We are unique,” Kensington Gardens regional manager Col Ward said. “We have beautiful open spaces and we have houses that have nothing directly behind them. “These are things other estates can’t offer.” With stage seven already being planned, it’s time to check out Kensington Gardens before the best is quickly snapped up.
Enjoy the beautiful rural views on offer as part of the stage six development. 145481

By ERIN SOMERVILLE CLARE Evans thinks cancer may just be about one of the best things that happened to her. The experience left Ms Evans who was battling the disease at just 30 - with a new approach to health and life. Over six years ago, Ms Evans moved to Albury as part of her healing process and went on to pen her personal journey of healing, growth, and holistic medicine. On Saturday, Ms Evans launched her book ‘Pure Balance’. “I was inspired one day to write a book, the idea just came to me,” she said. “I want to help people who go through similar experiences. “I think a lot of people think that they’re healthy but they’re not, and it can be quite a shock.” Ms Evans journey to discover her own health lead to re-evaluating her lifestyle, emotions, and well-being, which Ms Evans feels are all strongly connected to a healthy life. facilities weren’t built,” Mr Marsh said. “Everything that Kensington Gardens promised was already here, and you can see they are doing it to a very high standard.” While the idea of building a home can be a daunting one, the team at Kensington Gardens helped make the steps very simple for the couple. “We have never built our own house before, and it was a very positive experience.”
They also enjoyed the individualised touches they were able to make to their home, personalising it with their taste in paint, tiles, and decor. But don’t just take the Marshes’ word for it. Head on out to the Kensington Gardens Open Day on 24 October, and you will be guaranteed to find dozens of other residents just waiting to share their lifechanging experience of moving to the estate with you.

JANINE and Stan Marsh are just one of many couples who have been pulled from afar by Kensington Gardens’ magnetic lure. Three years ago, the couple left their Canberra life behind them in search of a change in pace, better lifestyle, and a relaxed country atmosphere. Once discovering Kensington Gardens, they haven’t looked back. “Canberra is very good, but it can be a very unsociable place if you’re not working,” Mr Marsh said. “This place has a very community feel. “Some days it can take me an hour to get my mail from just chatting to everyone in the street.“ With Albury Wodonga boasting some great shopping, medical, and transport facilities, all the while ringed by stunning rural scenery and country hospitality, the couple feel they are now getting the best of both worlds. There are so many overwhelming choices couples have when investigating over-50 estates, however for Mr and Mrs Marsh, Kensington Gardens was an easy decision. “A lot of places promised to be like this, but many of their

Resort living order of day By ERIN SOMERVILLE
WHEN you become a resident at Kensington Gardens, the idea of resort living becomes the lifestyle of most. The team at the estate knows life doesn’t stop after retirement, and are there to help residents make the most of really living their days to the fullest. With so many great activities on offer, residents reap the positive physical, mental, and well-being benefits from the great facilities and community right at home in Kensington Gardens. There is so much to do in the 65acre estate. The multi-million dollar clubhouse is the hub of Kensington Gardens, and a great place to start the day. Many residents are up at the crack of dawn, enjoying the fitness centre at Kensington Gardens leading to improved health and well-being. With the weather now warming up, many are taking to the pool to get their heart pumping with some gentle lap swimming or water aerobics, with others enjoy pounding the pavement around the picturesque neighbourhood. For many, simply sitting in the village’s indoor spa has helped relive tension, stress, and every day aches and pains. For those who prefer being active with company, Kensington Gardens is hard to beat for social options.
Backing onto the golf course, it is easy to take the clubs over and soak up the sunshine in the beautiful spring weather, or challenge a friend to a hit to keep the sense of competition alive. The village also has a workshop and vegetable garden, which is great for getting together to work on small projects, or for simply pottering around and having a chat to the neighbours. Kensington Gardens is also a great place to be when it’s time to relax. With a gold class wide screen cinema, library, and computer room, putting the feet up and enjoying a bit of peace and quiet is simple, too. For those who enjoy a little bit of socialising, there is always a friendly face at the Kensington Gardens bar. A lot of residents enjoy passing their eve-
ning with a cool, frothy beer or tasty red wine in hand and having a hit of pool at the Kensington Gardens’ bar, and with the weather fining up the massive outdoor barbecue area will soon be getting a big workout With a range of activities on throughout the week, from indoor bowls, arts and crafts, games nights, card groups, painting lasses, tai chi, snooker competitions, footy tipping, and more, Kensington Gardens is ideal for the young of heart and mind. For those who like to go beyond the Kensington Garden walls, regular day trips are planned to help residents see the best of the Border without the stress of driving and navigating themselves.
Active travellers will love the latest development at Kensington Gardens: caravan and recreational vehicle lockup sheds. These powered lock-up caravan sheds soon to be built are hard to find at other estates, and helps give Kensington Gardens the edge on other lifestyle villages for the active travellers.
The new facility means residents can lock up their pride and joy safely, and leave plenty of room in their garage or driveway. With so much on offer, and something happening here almost every day, it is easy to see why residents come to Kensington Gardens to really live it up.

Shock death of councillor By ERIN SOMERVILLE
Albury’s new mayor Henk van de Ven has been quick to state Albury’s stance on Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE amalgamation. 144934
Albury aims to go it alone NEW AlburyCity mayor Henk van de Ven is seeking confirmation from the NSW Government that there will be no forced amalgamations of councils. The mayor has written to NSW Local Government Minister Paul Toole seeking a further assurance that there will be no forced merger between AlburyCity and Greater Hume Shire.
“The council unanimously passed a resolution at its September meeting that I write to the minister to seek assurance that AlburyCity councillors will be allowed to serve out their elected terms,” Cr van de Ven said. “I want to make it very clear that this council is resolute in its opposition to any forced
council amalgamations. “We have presented a compelling case to the government that we are Fit for the Future and have the scale and capacity to stand alone.” “We are seeking in writing confirmation that the NSW Government will maintain its current position of no forced amalgamations of councils.”

INDIGO residents are in mourning following the sudden death of councillor Don Chambers, who died on Sunday in Rome. Mayor Bernard Gaffney said on Monday that the council and staff were in shock and their thoughts and prayers were with the family at this difficult time. “Don was highly regarded by his fellow councillors and all the staff. We knew him as a fighter for what he believed was best for the community," Cr Gaffney said. “Don was a fierce proponent for his Rutherglen community but he always had an eye for the bigger picture and where Indigo Shire fitted in the scheme of things. “He was extremely well connected regionally and at State and Federal government levels. His death leaves a void in council deliberations that will be impossible to fill.” Cr Chambers, 78, was a fourth-term councillor, being first elected to council in 1997. He was mayor in 1999 and 2000. He was Indigo Shire Council’s representative on the North East Waste and Resource Recovery Forum, and was chairman of that organisation’s board. He was a past board member of EcoRecycle Victoria, Sustainability Victoria and North East Water. Cr Chambers also represented the council on the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria board, and was national chairman for 10 years. He also played a role in the Municipal Advisory Association’s three advisory committees to the MAV board – Human Services, Planning and Environment, Timber Towns and Murray Darling Region 1 committee, and Indigo Shire Advisory Heritage, Burke Museum and Rutherglen Gold Battery committees. “One of Don’s passions was Indigenous heritage and he was a prime mover in this council fly-

ing the Aboriginal flag alongside the Australian and State flags,” Cr Gaffney said. “As a mark of respect to Don, the new flags outside the council office at The Pines have been lowered to fly at half-mast.” Details of funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised.
Letters Good old rant WELL as usual Bill doesn’t let facts get in the way of a good old rant. He says council dived for cover about the “Englehardt abortion clinic affair” but we warn some right-wing groups (let’s be clear he means people like the United Patriots Front or Reclaim Australia) not to come to Albury. The facts are that council used all the powers available to it to resolve the issue of ongoing protestors outside the Englehardt Street clinic. I personally called on them to hold their protests further away from the clinic itself. Then he chides me for showing support for the Muslim community to show how “I am not racist” and saying things “the minority group wished to hear”. No Bill, I said the things because I believe them! Question for Bill. You’d like us to get rid of the Englehardt protesters, but would be happy to have the UPF in town?
Then he descends into the unintelligible, a hallmark of many of his past letters to the media, when he talks about “unlawful hindrance and obstruction by ‘bead mumblers’ ”? I have no idea what a ‘bead mumbler’ is – perhaps it’s a person saying the rosary. Finally Bill shows his true colours. Using a horse racing analogy he says you look at the form and “if it looks suspect you do not waste your money on it. And some nationalities are the same.” So it’s not about individual people, you can tar everyone with the same brush. Perhaps we could ask Bill to provide us with a list of approved races. I’d bet there won’t be any whose religion is Islam. I wonder if he has any friends who come from other cultures. Great way to promote harmony. Albury Councillor David Thurley, Lavington.

Vivid Accountants and Advisers principal Bronwyn Tyrell said her business was proud to be helping raise awareness for a little understood disease. “There’s four females who work here and most of us have daughters,” she said. “At the moment it is quite scary that people don’t know the symptoms, and medical practitioners can’t even diagnose it properly.
“Research needs to be done.” BOCAG was also an appealing choice for Vivid to donate to, with money staying locally. The Border Ovarian Cancer Marquee will also be available on Saturday’s Caulfield Cup Day, which includes an all-inclusive raceday package for $120 with great delicious food and a selection of beer, wine, sparkling wine and soft drinks throughout the day. Proceeds from each ticket sold go to Border Ovarian Cancer and admission to the racecourse is included. For more information visit www. countryracing.com.au

THE Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group (BOCAG) will be the biggest winner on the track at Saturday’s Caulfield Cup Day at Wodonga and District Turf Club, rivalling the bookies by raising thousands to help support local women battling the disease. This year marks the group’s third annual BOCAG Celebrity Horse Race, which sees a number of local businesses put their money where their horse’s mouth is, and battle it out on the turf to raise funds for ovarian cancer. The novelty race, which sees a nominated business representative run with foam horses, has become a highlight on the social calendar for the business community, with entrants forking out $1000 to enter to help fund BOCAG. So far, $30,000 has been raised from the annual event which was inspired by the death of Wodonga woman Kelsey Watts, who died after a three-year battle with ovarian cancer in 2011. Kelsey was a passionate horse trainer in the local area. The funds will go towards the group’s goal of donating $100,000 to the new Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre when it opens. BOCAG is looking forward to playing a major role in the new cancer centre, with negotiations currently in progress to establish the Kelsey Watts Memorial Research

In addition, a 10 km/h shared zone has been enforced in the CBD on Amp Lane from Smollett to Dean Street, Selle Lane from Smollett Street to Volt Lane, and Volt Lane from Amp Lane to Olive Street. The new limit has been dropped from 50km/h following increased business and pedestrian activity. Member for Albury Greg Aplin
said Roads and Maritime Services carried out a review of the speed limit as part of an ongoing speed review program and in response to feedback from Albury City Council and the community. “This change will address community concerns about speed zone consistency and decrease travel time through the area."
“Road users should be aware of the changes and remember speed limits are enforceable once the new signs are installed. “Members of the community can sign up at the Safer Roads NSW website to receive updates about changes to permanent speed limits in their nominated area and have their say on speed limits."

Border takes MAMA to heart
MAMA has only been in town for a week, but already the new art museum knows how to pull a crowd. More than 6000 people visited MAMA in the first four days since its doors of opening on Friday 2 October. MAMA director Jacqui Hemsley said visitor numbers had far exceeded expectations and she thanked the community for its support. “We had hoped 2000 people would visit MAMA in those
first few days, but to have about 6000 visitors was a great vote of confidence in MAMA,” Ms Hemsley said. “I want to thank each and every person who has come through the doors since MAMA opened on Friday.” Ms Hemsley said MAMA’s Big Night Out celebrations on Friday night between 5pm and 10pm attracted up to 10,000 people. “It was great to see families and people of all ages enjoying
the celebrations and checking out MAMA for the first time,” she said. On opening day, Friday, about 3600 people visited MAMA. “We had people travel from Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney - and they weren’t ‘invited guests’ they were people who just wanted to see MAMA.” MAMA is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, extended hours on Thursdays to 7pm and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 10am to 4pm.
ELIZABETH Powles may only be seven years old, but already she is thinking of those worse off than herself. On Thursday morning, Elizabeth was excused from her art class at St Augustine’s Primary School and headed to her local salon to donate over 30 centimetres of hair for those in need. The hair donation will be directed to Variety to help make wigs for sick children. The cost of a wig can be as much as $1200. As well as donating hair, Elizabeth has raised an impressive $1400 to also donate to Variety. The Year 2 student said her gym teacher had donated hair and inspired her with the idea to contribute to the good cause. “I’m doing it so they (sick children) can have hair, too.
Elizabeth Powles has her hair measured at KG’s Hairdesigns by owner Kerryn Gilmour. 145355 Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE “They might be a bit scared without hair.” Elizabeth has only ever had a few trims in her life, and has always enjoyed her long locks, but as she sat in the chair at the hairdresser on Thursday morning was excited to also be
gaining a new, short hairdo free from tangles. You can donate to Elizabeth’s fund-raiser for Variety at KG’s Hairdesigns at 11 Morrison Street in Wodonga, or through www.variety.org.au
The QEII Square markets begin this week. 145386
Festive atmosphere for twilight markets THE excitement around Albury’s QEII Square just keeps on growing. Following one of the city’s biggest celebrations with the opening of MAMA, the QEII Twilight Markets will return on Thursday 8 October from 5pm to 8pm. The markets will be held on the second Thursday of every month from October to March and with MAMA open until 7pm on Thursdays,
people can make it a night out. Nearly 80 stallholders will sell hand-made and unique goods, including up-market vintage clothing, potted plants, essential oils, candles, hand-made jewellery, cookbooks, bottled and fresh produce and more. AlburyCity Mayor Henk van de Ven said the boutique market was a great opportunity to support local traders and enjoy some live music.
“It’s great to see families out on the green lawns of QEII Square soaking up the atmosphere, enjoying a meal and listening to some great musicians,” Cr van de Ven said. “The upcoming markets will also feature a selection of local craft brewers so people can come along and sample the region’s best brews and ciders.” Visitors to the 8 October market
will be entertained by Mount Beauty brothers Gabriel and Michael Saafield who perform as The Royce Twins. They featured on TV’s X Factor and describe their music as easy listening, modern pop with a dash of country. For the budding young artists, smocks, paints and easels will be set up to allow children to create all sorts of masterpieces.

Let ’em roar for bike fest By TANIA PHILLIPS JUST how loud can a bike go? That is one of the many questions that will be answered at the 2016 Border Bike Fest on Sunday 25 October at Gateway Lakes, Wodonga. The 2016 Border Bike Fest will include the Wodonga Lions Club “Motorbike Show and Shine”, and bikes only Swap Meet. The charity event was founded by a small group of motorcycle enthusiasts who wanted to share their passion for motorcycles while raising money for Kidney Health Australia, and was first held in 2008. The inaugural “Motorbike Show and Shine” proved to be a great success, displaying over 150 motorcycles; it attracted in excess of 1000 people and raised $6000 for Kidney Health Australia. Held in conjunction with the Ulysses Club - and now in it’s eighth year - all funds raised this year will be shared to support Lions and local community charities. Beneficiaries include the Kidney Foundation, Carer Accommodation Centre, Lions Children Cancer Research Centre, Eden Camp for Youth, Wodonga Hospital, Country Hope and various Lions affiliated charities. And while the crowd mostly turns up to see many of the bikes on display - for bike owners one of their favourite events is the “loudest bike” competition. The event is run by sound engineer Ray Walsh and started as something fun and has morphed into one of the most hotly contested events of the day and a good fund-raiser.
Border Bike Fest last year helped raise funds for Aspect Riverina School. Back, from left: Michael Georgiou, Laurie Frost, Marie Iurze, Rex Bearde, Eddie Parr, Leon Briggs and Dennis Damiel. Front: Jesse O'Brien, Harry Brady, Cameron Ramsey, Rory Earle, Bridget Favero Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE and Bryce Ackerly. 127784 Participants compete under a strictly managed process and have the volume of the bike exhaust measured and recorded on a certificate for a small donation of $5. The readings are kept a close secret until trophies are presented at the end of the show. “We started this idea at the first one - it was just a fun thing but then we decided use it to raise
some extra money for the cause,” Ray said. “We ran a couple of heats.” He said the bikes are broken up in to two divisions - two stroke and four stroke and each bike is tested three times with the average taken. Ray said it was fun for the owners who get a chance to make their bikes as “loud as possible”.

Fete fun with a hard purpose By ERIN SOMERVILLE JINDERA’S St Mary MacKillop College is working its way towards a new multipurpose hardsurfaced sports court through its upcoming Country Fete. “We’ve got no hard surface at the moment, but plenty of grass,” principal Kevin Tingle said. “At the moment if we have wet weather it’s a problem for assemblies.” The initial development is expected to cost about $70,000. The Country Fete is the fifth one for the school, and will include an array of attractions including a chocolate wheel, a raffle, food, home-made goods, children’s activities such as face
painting, puppet plays, and mini golf, and Miner’s Rights which includes a cash prize for the winner. “We have kept our fete traditional and with a country theme and for something different this year, we decided to introduce barefoot tug-of-war challenge with cash prizes,” organiser Vera Galvin said. “Our annual fete brings the whole school community together as everyone comes along to help and join in the fun. “We are looking forward to welcoming many visitors from our local community as well as those from further afield on Saturday 17 October, between 10am and 1pm.”
“It’s a bit of fun and quite a unique event,” he admitted, adding however that it was growing in popularity each year. “Last year we had a lot of interest and more than 30 entries.” So is any model more dominant? “As a rule a Harley usually wins the four stroke,” he laughed.

ROADS and Maritime Services will start work this month to improve safety and travel times on the Riverina Highway between Albury and Bethanga Bridge. Albury MP Greg Aplin said the work is stage one of the NSW Government’s overall $11 million commitment to improve road safety on the highway. Stage one from Sandy Creek to Hume Weir Village will see road widening, guard rail installation, new and improved signage, upgraded drainage, vegetation removal, and rebuilding the road surface. Work will be carried out seven days a week between 6am and 7pm, weather permitting. Signage advising motorist and landholders of commencement of the works is now in place. While both lanes of the highway
will be open to traffic up to Christmas, traffic control will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists, and delays of up to 10 minutes may be experienced. Motorists should plan their trip, allow extra travel time and follow the direction of traffic control and all signs, including reduced speed limits of 40km/h during work. There will be no work between 18 December and 4 January to ensure holiday traffic is not impacted. Work is expected to be completed at the end of April next year, weather permitting. Stage two work from Hume Weir Village to Bethanga Bridge is expected to start in October next year. For the latest traffic information, visit www.livetraffic.com, download the Live Traffic app or call the transport management centre on 132 701.

Arts Space Wodonga curator Simone Nolan with some pieces from The Art of Story Picture: WODONGA COUNCIL exhibition. 145361
Artworks show the real story THE creation of the highly acclaimed picture book and animated film, The Lost Thing, is the subject of a new exhibition at Arts Space Wodonga. The Art of Story exhibition is informed by Shaun Tan’s art for both projects, his personal notes and comments. It begins with sketches, the dummy book, roughs and final original illustrations for the picture book published in 2000. It then moves through the collaborative process, with members of the film team at Passion Pictures, to create the animated film of the same story. This was a 10-year creative journey, with the DVD of this film released in 2010. The process of developing the animation is shown through
Tan’s character sketches, pencil storyboards, soft pastel stills and texture paintings. A short film documents the complex stages of the digital development of the surreal place Tan calls Utopia, its environment and inhabitants. It illustrates how the animation was created from early structural stages to the final digital masterpiece and incorporates alternate and experimental pieces of film and sound. “Do not miss this once off opportunity to experience the brilliance of an artist, illustrator and storyteller such as Shaun Tan,” Arts Space Wodonga curator Simone Nolan said. “This is not just an exhibition for children, or for the budding illustrator, but for ev-
eryone. You can’t help but be amazed at the detail and imagination on display in this very special display.” The Lost Thing animation has won many film awards in Australia and around the world including Best Short Film at the 34th Annecy International Animation Festival in France and the 2011 Academy Award, The Oscar, for short animation. Shaun Tan is the multi award-winning author and illustrator of many illustrated books including The Arrival, The Red Tree, Tales from Outer, Suburbia, The Bird King and Rules of Summer. A touring exhibition from Books Illustrated, The Art of Story opens Friday 9 October and continues until 7 November.

Big step to better health PRIMARY school students in Wodonga are encouraged to walk to school and towards better health this October. Wodonga Council, in conjunction with Gateway Health, is working with local primary schools to co-ordinate Walk to School activities with funding from VicHealth. By getting involved in Walk to School, students learn healthy habits and are supported in meeting the 60 minutes of physical activity recommended for children each day. “We want to encourage more kids to walk, scoot or ride in Wodonga because
exercise is fantastic for children’s health,” Wodonga mayor Rodney Wangman said. “It also helps reduce congestion on our roads, and reduces the associated environmental impacts.” VicHealth chief executive officer Jerril Rechter said children who walk to and from school can build healthy lifelong habits, become more familiar with their neighbourhoods and make new friends with other local children. “With today’s children living a more inactive lifestyle and spending lots of time on screens, there is an increasing risk of serious health
problems,” Ms Rechter said. “Students who take part in Walk to School can not only increase their daily physical activity, but also get to spend more quality time with their parents, siblings and friends.” Walk to School activities will include healthy breakfasts, group walks, safety workshops and raffle prizes for participating students. All participating schools will receive student certificates to celebrate their students’ achievements, and will be in the running for regional prizes provided by VicHealth.

Friendly face to civic space LANDSCAPING of the civic space in front of the new Yackandandah Council Office and Library is scheduled to begin late next month. The area between the Yackandandah Hall and Ardsville is part of the original design for the modern council office, and will be used for community events, public art and cultural activities. Indigo Shire mayor Bernard Gaffney said that all the planning, care and community input was sure to see the new space become a much used and loved feature in the town.
“The designers, architects and council officers have spared no effort in ensuring the wishes of residents have been reflected in the concept plans," he said. “Their ideas for how the space can be used for events and gatherings of all sorts have ensured residents and visitors alike will have a fantastic new meeting place right in the heart of town." A feature of the area will be a garden arbour incorporating a sculptural art piece from the winning design of Smoko artist Richard Walker. A flag station next to the centrepiece arbor
will feature the national, State and Aboriginal flags. Work is expected to start in late November and be completed in time for the Yackandandah Folk Festival in March next year. Gardens will be planted in April or May, when conditions will be optimum for growth. Plans and the architects’ concept drawings will be on display next week outside the civic space in High Street, Yackandandah, and further information will be available inside at the Yackandandah Customer Service Centre.

Central Wodonga
This place gets it exactly right By ERIN SOMERVILLE
FOR 20 years, Exact Computers and Home Entertainment has been helping Border residents keep on top of the latest technology and gadgets. As the technology sector continues to grow and evolve, so too has Exact Computers and Home Entertainment. From humble beginnings in owner Greg Haysom’s garage, Exact Computers and Home Entertainment has now called South Street home for the past 14 years. “While we have always been Exact Computers, in one way, shape or form all this time, we have also had an ongoing link to Leading Edge,” Mr Haysom said. “We started as Leading Edge Home Theatre, then became a Leading Edge Electronics Agent. “Then we added Leading Edge Computers, and now, most recently, becoming a full branded Leading Edge Electronics Store.” So what does this mean for customers? Exact Computers and Home Entertainment will now be putting out monthly catalogues and stocking a greater range of product, so there will always be great items in store to update your home, or spoil someone you love this Christmas. From computers, to laptops, printers, home theatre, turntables, Bluetooth speakers, toys, radios, security camera systems, or custom installed multiroom audio and video systems, Exact Computers has the right gear for you. Two decades of service in Wodonga has won over many loyal customers, and the team is eager to see that continue into the future as the business continues to develop. “We have always prided ourselves in being the place to go to solve your problems - we love a challenge, you can come to us with an idea of what you want to do, and we will find a way to do it.”
Head on down to see Greg at Exact Computers and Home Entertainment as they continue to expand in Wodonga. 145493 Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE
Pays to shop local By ERIN SOMERVILLE WITH the Australian dollar this month only buying a measly 73 cents US, now is a better time than any to spend your money wisely. That’s why you should be shopping locally, with goods in Australian shops likely to be cheaper than those online. Why? The goods you can find down at your local store were most likely purchased before the Aussie dollar plummeted below US 80 cents, but if you buy online, you are buying at today’s exchange rate.
With the dollar not looking to bounce back to early 2015 prices anytime soon, it is a great time particularly before Christmas to put the laptop away and head on down to the local shops to make your money stretch further. There are also some great additional savings that can be made from ditching online shopping. Meeting your local shop owners can help you get faceto-face advice from those in the know, who can help guide you on the right product for you, offer advice, and provide insight into products that are
the most efficient and costeffective. Building a relationship with a local retailer can also literally pay off, with many happy to let you know when sales are likely to be on, when is the right time to buy a product, and when old stock is being rolled out to make way for the new. Leaving the house and stepping away from the screen can also lead to longer term cost-effective practices, including using less electricity, as well as helping build your health, sense of community, and well-being.

Hard Yacka tests competitors By TANIA PHILLIPS IT was that time of year again as competitors from across the region descended on Yackandandah on Sunday for the second WAW Credit Union Hard Yacka - Run and Ride. The Hard Yacka featured a series of cross country running and mountain bike riding courses. Participants choose a course that best suited their interest, age and fitness level: From primary age courses through to more serious routes for those die-hards out there. The event is held as a fund-raiser for the Yackandandah Primary School and aims to promote the fun and fitness benefits of running and cycling. The event involved athletes from primary school all the way through to the more experienced competitors who took on the challenging 80km ride which included 2000 metres of climbing.

Dr John Brabant is a global leader on Invisalign. 141381

Visible results By ERIN SOMERVILLE
WINNING over both clients and professionals, the amazing results provided by Invisalign are hard to deny. Albury orthodontist John Brabandt has quickly become a global leader with the Invisalign product, which helps align the teeth through a subtle, simple, and hygienic method. Having recently demonstrated the results of Invisalign at the 2015 European Orthodontist Conference in Venice, the Asia Pacific Invisalign Summit in Singapore, and soon to win over crowds of professionals in New Zealand, the success of this technique on the Border is
winning global support. So how does this amazing product work? Invisalign acts like braces in helping gently move teeth to their correct position, but brings many more benefits for the client. Invisalign is very subtle, and its sheer appearance won’t bring the social anxiety that can come from wearing braces. The product is far more comfortable and gentle on the clients’ lips and cheeks, and also encourages better oral hygiene. The process is simple for the client, but involves hightech design and development to produce very effective results. A painless scanner will take images of the clients’ mouths and
produce a detailed model to be sent to the United States within minutes. From there, the talent of Dr Brabant will help create the ideal Invisalign product tailored for your teeth to achieve the perfect results. ‘We are worldwide leaders of Invisalign and have the results to prove it,” Dr Brabant said. And when you see the unbelievable results the team at Albury’s Evolve Orthodontics have achieved with their teen and adult clients, you’ll understand why there is simply no better place to achieve that confident smile you have always dreamed of.
FOR some people, weight control is a never ending cycle of dieting to lose weight only to gain it right back again. Diets simply do not work because they do not change your underlying relationship with food or your thought patterns about connecting with food. Proper weight control is less about being skinny than it is about being fit and healthy. The problem is that most people want a shortcut or a quick fix for their weight control issues, and that is just not a long term solution. Constant dieting is a losing battle because your mind is constantly focused on one thing: food. What’s more, your thoughts about food are negative, such as “I can’t eat that because it’s too fattening”. Another common issue is the feelings you get from eating, including pleasure, emotional fulfilment, and a sense of comfort. The more you depend on food to generate these feelings, the more trouble you will have managing your food intake and controlling your weight. NLP and Hypnotherapy techniques help you control your weight by changing how you think and behave related to food.
Visit Wayne Moffat at Riverina Mind Design to kick your harmful addictions. 137141 You learn how to break the harmful patterns of thought that lead to eating too much of the wrong things, and replace them with healthy patterns of thought that create healthy, balanced eating behaviours. This kind of re-patterning allows you to literally change how you associate food with the rest of your life so that you automatically make the right behaviour choices to achieve your weight control goals. You learn to eat whatever you want, whenever you want, and as much as you want, while
still taking the time to eat slowly and savour your food. The key is that you also learn to want healthy, balanced foods instead of high calorie and high fat junk foods. Another important part of the process is helping you to change thought patterns so that you develop the habit of staying very clear and focused on your weight control goal. You learn to focus on taking in the right amount of the right foods in order to reach your goal. This goal orientation is all about paying attention to what you want rather than what you don’t want. Why? Because you tend to succeed at whatever receives most of your attention. For most people, treatment takes anywhere from three to six one-hour sessions. The focus of treatment is not on dieting, but rather about creating healthy thought patterns and behaviours which in turn create healthy eating habits. Riverina Mind Design’s combination of powerful NLP and Advanced Hypnotherapy will help you reach your perfect size. Say goodbye to your weight problems and reach your ideal weight. Let Riverina Mind Design’s experience in NLP and Clinical Hypnotherapy help you do it today.

Albury Orthodontist named one of Australia's First Diamond Invisalign Providers. Dr Brabant recognised as one of the most experienced Invisalign Providers in the country. Albury Orthodontist Dr John Brabant has been awarded the Invisalign Diamond Provider status making him one of Australia's most experienced Invisalign providers. Invisalign is the clear alternative to braces that uses a series of clear, virtually invisible and removable aligners to gradually move teeth into their desired position, without the use of metal or wires. It combines 21st century technology and revolutionary manufacturing to customise a treatment for each individual patient. “Technology is changing the way we do things and the way we straighten teeth is no exception,” Dr Brabant said. “Now there's a virtually invisible alternative to braces, like Invisalign that make teeth straightening a more appealing prospect for a whole new market of image conscious professionals. Gone are the days when orthodontics was just reserved for teenagers, now people can feel more confident about the process of improving their smile at all ages.” Dr Brabant has been treating patients with Invisalign for many years at his practice Evolve Orthodontics based in Albury & Wangaratta and prides himself on using the latest orthodontic techniques to continue delivering the high treatment standards and personal service he offers patients and their families. Dr Brabant now lectures internationally on Invisalign to other orthodontists. There are four primary benefits of Invisalign: 1. Invisalign is nearly invisible – you can straighten your teeth without everyone knowing. 2. Invisalign is removable – you can eat and drink what you want during treatment ; you can also brush and floss normally to maintain good oral hygiene. 3. Invisalign is comfortable – there are no metal brackets or wires to cause mouth irritation. No metal or wires also means you spend less time in the doctor’s chair getting adjustments. 4. Invisalign allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan before you start – so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete. Invisalign is appropriate for treating adults and teens, to arrange a no-obligation consultation to discuss your treatment needs (no matter how severe or minor). Please telephone 02 6021 1288.

FOR those who are afflicted with coeliac disease or are dairy or wheat intolerant, it appears things are looking up in the food production area. Many companies are developing new gluten free, wheat free, and dairy free products for the consumer. After attending the gluten-free expo in Melbourne over the weekend, I feel it is apparent that some companies are simply cashing in on what is termed a “fad diet by those who lack understanding of what gluten free really is and how it affects those who genuinely suffer greatly from the consumption of gluten. However, there are many genuine companies developing much-needed gluten-free staples for those consumers who suffer from coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome and dairy intolerance. I feel that many of the new products being developed are providing more choices, however some have missed the issue of healthy choices, for example new brands of crisps or chips, biscuits, breakfast cereals, and cakes are now on our supermarket shelves. Many of them contain a high percentage of sugars, fats, and salt, though. There is something to be said for natural foods like fresh fruits, salads, vegetables and meat to keep us gluten and dairy free. Unfortunately for patrons with specific dietary requirements, when it comes to dining out, choices are very limited and a little akin to playing Russian roulette with your health. Fortunately for those afflicted with food allergies and auto immune diseases such as coeliac disease, Monica’s Cafe and Restaurant in Albury goes above and beyond to provide a diverse menu that supports those patrons who find it difficult to find a safe place to dine out. Mind, Body & Soul to tackle crisis Your health is Counselling pregnancy -need to talk? your best asset
Advertising Feature
By SAXON SELVEY WHAT is your most valuable asset? Is it your house, your car, your bigscreen TV, or that rideon lawnmower? No, it’s your health. How else are you going to get through your week let alone achieve. So what is health? Most people think health is the way they look, or feel. Yet if you look at the second biggest killers in our society - heart disease and cancer,- you don’t usually feel these until the very last stage of the disease process. Can you feel your cholesterol levels or your insulin sensitivity? If we look at the World Health Organisation’s definition of health, it states “ ... health is optimum function ... and not just the absence of disease ... ”. So health was never the way we look and feel, but how well. So what is the master control system that powers the function of your body? The brain. Think of your brain as a supercomputer, your body as a robot, and your spinal cord as a huge internet cable connecting the two. Your body is full of sensory receptors, kind of like circuits in the robot that allow your brain to make sense of the body relative to itself and its surroundings, like the ground, the steering wheel and that cup of coffee. Where are most of these sensory circuits found? Roger Sperry, Noble Prize winner in neurobiology stated “ ... “90 per cent of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine.“ So in order to be healthy, you must have a healthy functioning spine to stimulate your nervous system.
Let Saxon Selvey help improve your wellbeing. 145418 The goal of chiropractic is to keep the spine functioning, so that the brain receives all the information it needs to keep balancing and healing the body. Studies show the chiropractic adjustment changes brain chemistry for the better, improves sensory motor integration and improves energy uptake in the brain. The goal of the chiropractic is to help people get healthy from the inside, brain to spinal cord, nerves to body. Some people use this as a therapy to treat symptoms, others use it as part of a strategy to lead a healthier, more successful life.
WHAT does crisis pregnancy counselling mean? In essence, crisis pregnancy counselling suggests that becoming pregnant is not always the celebrated event it should be due to the many difficult circumstances in which a woman may find herself. The Women’s Life Centre was established to provide a safe place for women and men to come and talk about problems concerning pregnancy. The centre offers free counsellors who provide emotional support and link the client with services that enable her to access psychological, medical and material assistance. Assistance is offered to any person affected by a pregnancy related concern - this can include parents or even grandparents of the baby. With crisis pregnancies, women and men can feel trapped and isolated, feeling overwhelmed by their problems. At the centre, the team wants people to know they are not alone and will support a woman or couple through the whole pregnancy if necessary. To date Women’s Life
Centre has provided assistance with free pregnancy testing, linking women with supportive general practitioners, obstetricians and other local support organisations, assisted migrant and overseas couples and given out many mother and baby care bundles. The word counselling can sometimes frighten people, but we like to think of it as a conversation between two people. Yet this conversation is special, because the client has control of all the information they wish to share and can leave the conversation knowing their problems are safely held by the counsellor and will not be shared with friends or relatives. Sometimes in
a crisis all that is needed is someone to share the problem with. The centre is open five days a week, Monday to Friday 10am until 3pm, for walk-in appointments or previously made appointments. The centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and it provides on-call phone counselling which can be accessed by anybody. Women’s Life Centre has a dedicated, compassionate counsellor on the phone at any time of day. With over 15 caring volunteers, the team aims to dedicate their services to all those in need. No problem is too big or too small, and their counsellors are available to talk.

‘Jazz flavour like no other’ By TANIA PHILLIPS
MUSIC in the Gardens returns to AlburyCity on Sunday, when six-piece jazz and Dixieland band Shirazz takes to the stage in the Albury Botanic Gardens. The event will be held from 1-3pm, and is part of the free open-air concert series staged by AlburyCity. The Music in the Gardens series has entertained more than 15,000 people since it started three years ago. AlburyCity Mayor Henk van de Ven said Music in the Gardens had become one of the most popular spring activities in Albury. “Thousands of people enjoy these free concerts in our beautiful botanic gardens every spring. So don’t miss out, come along and listen to Shirazz on Sunday,” Cr van de Ven said. AlburyCity’s Events Team leader Ros Walls invited everyone to come and spend the afternoon with Shirazz in the gardens. “Shirazz’s heady mix of hot trad jazz and swampy street beats create a jazz flavour like no other,” Ms Walls said. “Pack a picnic, relax on the lawn and enjoy the wonderful music in beautiful surrounds.“ Food will be available and BYO alcohol is permitted. Music in the Gardens is a smoke-free event. A limited number of chairs and tables are provided, but there is ample space for your own picnic rug, chairs and cushions. The Music in the Gardens series is presented by AlburyCity and Johnsons MME. Albury Botanic Gardens is in Wodonga Place, Albury.
Shirazz, set to play in the gardens this weekend.

FRIDAYS on my Mind returns for the 2015/16 season with Bustamento bringing their hip vibe to The Cube Wodonga Courtyard stage. More than 4000 people enjoyed the festivities throughout the inaugural 2014/15 season and took part in music, art, games and food. Bustamento will kick off the new season after spending the past two years performing around the globe. Led by Australian musician Nicky Bomba, the seven-piece ensemble has returned to musical shores with a great collection of songs capturing the international flavour of their intrepid travels. An exciting departure from the Caribbeanbased style of their ARIA nominated first album, Intrepid Adventures to the Lost Riddim Islands, their new tunes show the band flexing its creative muscle. The Knitted Neurone project will be featuring as part of Fridays on my Mind with people encouraged to join with others in weaving a knitted neural network to help keep their minds and brains sharp, engaged and healthy. Other activities include a photobooth, adult colouring and indoor croquet in the library and giant Jenga in The Cube Wodonga. Deep, dark look into the eyes of evil Movie: Black Mass Length: 122mins Rating: MA15+ IT TOOK until about 20 minutes into this film to finally realise the pure evil gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger was actually being played by Johnny Depp, which is both a compliment to Depp’s acting here and the skillful make-up department. In a thinning blonde wig, piercing dead eyes that rival Voldemort’s, and an air of unpredictability, Depp’s version of Whitey is the personification of an ominous force, spreading fear and uncertainty by his mere presence. The film follows the real-life story of Irish-
American mobster “Whitey“ Bulger, Jr who rules the Winter Hill Gang in south Boston. As Whitey makes what he perceives as an ‘alliance’ with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1975 to take down the local mafia mob, he takes advantage of his immunity as he starts to spiral out of control following the death of his son and mother. His descent into pure evil is soulless and chilling as he threatens and kills the unsuspecting with all the care one protected from the law would show. Meanwhile, FBI agent and Whitey’s childhood friend John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) becomes criminally entangled in the alliance as he turns an obvious blind-eye to Whitey’s actions.
While Whitey inspires sympathy in perhaps only the devil himself, the real cliffhanger of the film is the moral tightrope Connolly walks, bringing his family along with him. There are some big names in this film helping it roll strongly into the box office, including Dakota Johnson aka Miss 50 Shades of Grey as the tormented partner of Whitey, Benedict Cumberbatch as the straight-laced political brother William Bulger, and Kevin Bacon as a straight-shooting FBI agent. Not many of the characters are enjoying themselves much in this film besides the psycho Whitey Bulger, but the audience certainly will. No psychopathic qualities required. - Erin Somerville
Link to chain of entertainment THIS year’s Festival of Blues at the Edwards Tavern Wodonga will have a “chain” of incredible acts. One of the originators of ‘Oz Blues’, Chain, first formed in 1968 - some 47 years ago have joined the line-up for the event to be held on 21-22 November. They will join headliner Diesel, who began his career in 1986 with the band Johnny Diesel and The Injectors. The ARIA Award-winning Diesel went solo in 1991 and will celebrate 30 years in the industry next year. Not forgetting the more modern era they have up and comer, and Yackandandah local Richard Perso, who despite being only 23 years old has played at more than 130 festivals in Australia, Canada and America. He played his first festival at age 15 and hasn’t looked back - winning a host of competitions/ awards in his teen years and releasing album number two Dreams vs Reality in 2013. The line-up is rounded out by some of the best live musicians in the business and returnees such as Fiona Boyes, Phil Manning, Sweet Felicia, Lloyd Spiegel and many more. Chain is still the only blues band to have a number one on Australian charts (‘Black ’n’ Blue’) as well as a number two (‘Judgement’) - together with singer Matt Taylor another number one (‘I Remember When I Was Young’) and the double gold album Toward The Blues ensured them a place in history. With ‘Chain Awards’ honouring their achievements at the Australian Blues Festival (Goulburn) and as the first act listed in the new blues section of Screensound (National Archives), the accolades still continue. Founding members, guitarist Phil Manning and singer/harmonica player Matt Taylor, each have highly successful careers as solo performers, and are regarded as among the finest exponents of their respective instruments this country has produced. Chain’s new material retains the earthiness of the '70s while including the insights and musicality expected from a lifetime of experience in the blues genre. These songs feature on their latest album titled Sweet Honey, and continue the tradition of ‘Oz Blues’. Chain live is a great entertainment experience, and with four decades of albums and performances under their belt, it would be a shame to miss their only north east show at Festival of the Blues on 21 and 22 November 2015 at Edward Tavern Wodonga. Weekend passes are now available to purchase from www.festivaloftheblues.com.au.

Multi-split air-conditioners connect multiple indoor units to a single outdoor condenser, meaning there is usually less work involved in installing them, but a single control station operates the whole system, so individual room temperatures aren’t possible How big should you go? When buying air-conditioners, a big consideration is how powerful the device needs to be to adequately cool your home, keeping you comfortable throughout the warmest of summer nights.
Air-conditioner capacity is rated by British Thermal Unit (BTU) and power output in kilowatts. Buying the right size unit is very important as air-conditioners that are too big will use more energy, while undersized ones will not cool the room sufficiently - so think about the size of your room first. For a living room measuring 30 square metres about 3.75kW will be needed at around 125 watts per square metre, allowing a constant level of comfort for you to entertain your friends For a bedroom, as a rough guide, 80 watts of power per square metre should be enough to keep the room cool enough to allow you and your family to fall peacefully to sleep Bells and whistles: Now that you have made the decision to buy an air-conditioner, you can’t go past a few extra bells and whistles that will shoot you to the top of the cool list this summer. Even though some features tend to be more expensive, here is a list of common extras that are worth taking a look at: Remote control Timer Sleep timer Dehumidifier Reverse cycle for heating Slide-out chassis for easier installation Mosquito traps Air filter to remove odours, smoke and germs available.

High risk of damage in spring wind MOST storm damage occurs in spring, new RACV data reveals, prompting a warning to residents to take steps to reduce the risk of storm or flood damage around the home. Close to 40 per cent of all storm-related RACV home insurance claims in the past three years were the result of incidents in the months of September, October and November. In 2014-’15, the eastern suburbs dominated the claims statistics in metropolitan Melbourne, with Knox in the top spot after recording 602 claims. Greater Geelong, recording 316 claims, was the regional centre with most claims. History shows that unstable weather patterns in the warmer months can bring damaging wind, hail and flash flooding, posing a risk to properties, RACV general manager Insurance Paul Northey said. “Major storms and floods are a major cause of damage, with extreme weather events resulting in close to 30,000 claims for property damage in the past three years,” he said. “We are in the danger period now, and
there are a number of basic things people can do that can make a big difference in reducing the risk of storm or flood damage. “These include securing loose objects around the property; keeping gutters, downpipes and drains clear and checking your roof for any holes or loose tiles that need repair or replacement. “Another factor people need to consider is the risk of falling trees and branches, which can cause severe damage to buildings and vehicles,” Mr Northey said. “If you are concerned about the safety of a tree on, or near your property, you should seek professional advice from an arborist before proceeding with any removal or pruning.’’ Mr Northey noted that being underinsured was also a risk to residents and property owners. “Home owners should make sure they have the level of insurance they need in the event that damage is caused, which can be extremely costly and inconvenient,” Mr Northey said.

Cooling options to choose from WITH the hotter months getting ever closer, Albury-Wodonga residents should start considering their cooling options for summer. For those who are looking to guarantee this summer’s forecast as sunny with 100 per cent chance of staying cool, The Good Guys Albury Store general manager, Luke Sims, has pulled together a list of key considerations to ensure you choose the right air-conditioner. Types of air-conditioning: If you’re looking to keep all rooms of the house cool at once, a split system is the way to go. These air-conditioners are made up of two parts, with one part attached to the internal wall of your home and the other sitting on the outside to exhaust heat out. These usually cost less to install and provide flexibility as you can choose separate units for each room of the house. A reverse system refers to airconditioners that provide both cooling and heating functions, coming in very handy during the cold winter months Air-conditioners with inverters are your kind of cooling system if minimal noise is important to you – these are often the quietest. They can also vary the temperature of the air they produce, rather than stopping and starting, as well as being cheaper to run and helping you achieve your desired room temperature more quickly – although they can be slightly more expensive

Regional homes are hitting the $1 million mark
It’s central and so convenient
WHILE best known for its affordability, around 80 homes in regional Victoria have sold for at least $1 million in the year to date. The latest REIV data shows coastal locations, in particular those within commuting distance of Melbourne, were home to some of regional Victoria’s most expensive properties. The state’s highest residential sale so far this year was in Barwon Heads on the Bellarine Peninsula, where a four-bedroom home sold for more than $3.5 million in January. With a median house price of $811,000, Barwon Heads has recorded several sales well above $1million this year including a $1.9 million sale in September while a smaller, three-bedroom property there went for $1.52 million in May. An additional 10 homes in the coastal town have garnered a sale price of $1 million or higher in the year to date. In Geelong, a four-bedroom home sold for more than $3 million in February and another for $2.5 million in August well above Geelong’s median house price of $580,000. Larger homes were also in
THIS lovely unit is in a nice block with excellent neighbours and would be ideal for a mature person. Both bedrooms have built-in robes and a ceiling fan, while the main one has its own air-conditioner. The large lounge includes a gas wall furnace, air-conditioner, and ceiling fan, while the dining area has sliding doors to the large backyard. There’s plenty of cupboards and a gas stove in the kitchen, and the garage has internal access to the laundry. A second car space is beside the garage. Set back from the street, this unit is in a nice location close to a large park, swimming pool and shops.
demand at the top end of the market in Ocean Grove on the Bellarine Peninsula with a fivebedroom home snapped up for $1.6 million in April after being on the market for just 16 days. So far this year, more than 10 homes in Ocean Grove have attracted sales prices above the $1 million mark - considerably higher than the median house price of $523,500. Quality three and four-bedroom homes in the Ballarat suburb of Lake Wendouree have also been popular with buyers, with seven properties this year selling for in excess of $1 million. Other areas attracting top sales include the Bendigo suburb of Kennington as well as Paynesville and Foster in the Gippsland region. Likewise, the Geelong suburbs of Newtown, Waurn Ponds, Highton, Mount Moriac, Manifold Heights, Hamlyn Heights, Drumcondra and nearby Wallington have all recorded million dollar sales this year. Point Lonsdale, Clifton Springs, Curlewis and Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula have also seen sales of at least $1 million in the year to date.

Local Sport Night games in youth court WODONGA is set to start a midnight basketball program, thanks to the hard work of local organisers. Midnight Basketball Australia chief executive officer Tess White said she was delighted to see the program start in Wodonga. Registration is now open for new players and volunteers. The first night of the inaugural tournament will take place on Friday. Starting at 7.30pm on Friday nights, the first eight-week Midnight Basketball Wodonga Tournament will be held at Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre. Midnight basketball is a national, community-run program held in a safe environment on Friday or Saturday nights for 12-18-year-old 'at risk’ youth. Each eightweek tournament night includes a hot, nutritious dinner followed by a compulsory life skills workshop before the tournament basketball begins. A bus takes all players home to their front door around midnight. “Midnight basketball is a natural catalyst for breaking down barriers, meeting new people and building trust. We encourage both players and volunteers to get behind the inaugural tournament. "Come along and give it a go. We invite the whole community to get involved. We are seeing communities get a great sense of satisfaction by building a great program together,” Ms White said. Midnight Basketball Wodonga’s Rachel Habgood said they were proud that so many people had got involved to drive midnight basketball and support it, and believed that volunteers would get a lot out of their involvement in the program. “Each night requires 15 volunteers who help with tasks like helping to serve dinner, setting up the workshop rooms, managing teams, scoring, refereeing, and driving the buses,” Ms Habgood said. “We welcome not only volunteers but all kinds of support from local organisations, whether it be in kind or financial support. There are lots of ways you can help from running professional workshops or refereeing, through to providing food, buses or even petrol.” For further information and registration, contact Claire Killeen on 0439 430 366. Register online at www.midnightbasketball.org.au/Wodonga or inquire at Wodonga@midnightbasketball.org.au

Bullets: shots fired By TANIA PHILLIPS THE Border Bullets have moved through to the next round of the new Plan B Regional Bash Cricket competition. The Bullets scored 3-110 and in reply had their opponents Southern Riverina Vipers all out for 108 at Bilson Park, Albury, on the weekend. The T20 game was part of round one of the state-wide competition which will culminate in the finals gala day at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 6 December. Sponsored by Cricket NSW’s major sponsor, Transport for NSW, the Plan B Regional Bash competition involved eight Sydney Sixers Conference franchises and eight Sydney Thunder Conference franchises creating a direct pathway for identification of regional cricketers into the Cricket NSW BBL franchises. The eight Sixers Conference teams were the Central Coast Rush, Coffs Coast Chargers, Hunter Hitmen, Illawarra Flames, Macquarie Coast Stingers, Newcastle Blasters, Northern Inland Bolters and Northern Rivers Rock. The eight Thunder Conference franchises were the ACT Aces, Border Bullets, Central West Wranglers, Murrumbidgee Rangers, Orana Outlaws, South Coast Crew, Southern Riverina Vipers and Wagga Wagga Sloggers. Both conferences have a Conference Ambassador to help coach teams, engage with the regional areas and promote T20 cricket in general. Former NSW and Australian batting hero Doug Walters is the Sixers Conference Ambassador, while former NSW and Australian fast bowler Len Pascoe is the Thunder Conference Ambassador. “The Plan B Regional Bash is a fantastic new competition, and we

We also want to ensure everyone in NSW Cricket has a direct link with the Sixers and Thunder teams, and the Plan B Regional Bash will do all of these things.”

All sorts of cycling booming on Border By CRAIG MCMILLAN - BENDED ELBOW CYCLING TEAM CYCLING is booming on the Border region, with its quiet roads, excellent off-road trails, bike paths and settled weather. From the outside, cycling can appear a different world, full of bright lycra and strange shoes, but look through that, it’s time to make the effort to get out and have a go. Once you do, you will soon enjoy the health benefits of an exercise that’s kind to all ages and fitness levels. It’s never too late to start. The Border region has plenty of options and variety in the coming months for any new or seasoned cyclist looking to tackle some challenges, enjoy some social riding or find out how they match up in a competitive event. The region is supported strongly by three excellent clubs, and a number of social groups that encourage you to have a go, and get the most out of your riding. The cross between the cycling codes is enjoyable, and a great way for even the region’s best athletes, to get more out of their love of cycling. Mountain Biking’s James Downing and Triathlete Jess Featonby compete in road races, professional cyclist Taryn Heather competes in Triathlon. The region has long been the playground for the off road side of cycling, with excellent trails in the heart of town including something for all abilities on Nail Can Hill.
Cycling is booming on the Border. 145449 Go to the Albury Wodonga Mountain Bike Club website to find up to date trail maps and news of upcoming events. The club also hosts a summer race series from 30 October at the Hunchback Mountain Bike Park in Wodonga. Targeted at introducing new riders into the sport, there is plenty of encouragement and support on hand for you to get the confidence to have a go. For those looking for an off road challenge, join the Bended Elbow Racing Team and enjoy the Mittato Mount Beauty MTB event. This
year’s event is taking place on 25 October over a 55km course that tests the legs more than the skills of a rider. If you have ever wanted to try an organised mountain bike event, then make this your year. The Albury Wodonga Tri Club has kicked off its summer program of events focusing around their Alans Flat course. The events are popular with new competitors as the social atmosphere focuses on personal goals and participation, but also serves as excellent training for some of the professionals and Ironman competitors based in the region. For those who are keen to try some competitive road cycling, the Bended Elbow Time Trial Series kicks off on 5 November. Raced over a flat 16km course, each rider is timed as they race individually. Often called the race of truth, the Bended Elbow Time Trial attracted many new riders last year but also gave many from the different cycling codes the opportunity to match “horsepower” for bragging rights. For those who are still making excuses, then there are no excuses to why you wouldn’t sign up for one of the many ride options of the Lake Hume Cycle Challenge on 27 February. The event is the Borders relaxed celebration of cycling, where all the regions bike riders, from families to competitive cyclists, take in the sights of the region. So there are plenty of ways for you to get your start in cycling and get your share of the health, well-being and enjoyment from being active.
