STAR of the screen and stage Eddie Perfect will wave off this year’s GP Run. Perfect has made his mark across the entertainment and arts industries in television, comedy, music, theatre and as a writer, and will be a great drawcard to what is already Casey’s biggest and most exciting community event. At the age of 36, Perfect is one of Australia’s most diverse and prolific writers, composers and performers, having carved out a successful career across many fields. Perfect’s list of credits on the small screen include starring on Channel 10’s hit drama series Offspring, Play School, the 2011 Logie Awards, Kath and Kim, Stingers, Blue Heelers and Spicks and Specks. His list of credits in theatre is just as extensive, having written and toured several shows including Shane Warne the Musical. Perfect is also a regular fixture on the Australian comedy circuit, having hosted the 2014 Melbourne Comedy Festival Oxfam Gala and has toured many solo music comedy shows around Australia, New Zealand, in Edinburgh and London to much acclaim, winning numerous awards. Perfect’s chosen charity for this year’s run is the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC). Founded in 2001, the centre provides food and material aid, health and legal services, employment, education and training, social and community development and social enterprise to more than 2000 people. City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland said the council was thrilled to be able to partner with this great organisation for Casey’s biggest annual event. “The City of Casey has a large population of asylum seekers and refugees and organisations, such as ASRC, complement work being done by council.

Picture: Courtesy Wikimedia “With a centre in Dandenong, the ASRC has provided invaluable support and assistance to the asylum seeker community across this region. “The ASRC is a non-profit organisation that is committed to upholding the human rights of all people seeking asylum. “They have played an important role in Melbourne’s south-east to protect asylum seekers from persecution, support their wellbeing and dignity and empower people to advance their own futures,” Cr Morland said. “On the day, ASRC will have a stall in Childers Street, Cranbourne, and volunteers will be roaming the event with collection tins, so I encourage you to show your support and give what you can,“ Cr Morland said.

Mr Bainbridge also praised Pat Carey for nearly securing the Apache Cat Classic and Cranbourne Cup double,

But Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said that was the first he’d heard of such a report. “That’s news to us,” he said. “I certainly haven’t heard any reports of any incidents from the day.” Mr Bainbridge said he was “delighted” with the weekend’s action at Cranbourne – the biggest on its racing calendar. “There were 7000 people there on Sunday for the pinnacle of our year on what was a beautiful day,” he said.

1201076-KC40-15

THERE was much more than usual up for grabs at this year’s TAB Cranbourne Cup, with one lucky winner walking away with a $33,000 Hyundai Tucson as Digitalism passed the winning post. The John Sadler-trained gelding led from start to finish of the $300,000, 2025-metre race and there was no-one more thrilled with the result than Bunyip mum Lisa Moyle, who entered a Cranbourne Hyundai competition earlier in the day for the chance to be paired with a runner in the big race. She was given number eight from the barrel, and watched on in sheer disbelief minutes later as the number eight crossed the line first, just ahead of Pat Carey’s Kareeming. But the excitement wasn’t only confined to the track on Sunday, with a 23-year-old Somerville woman - Jaimee Van de Parvert – telling the News that she and her friend were confronted by a runaway horse on their way to the races. “We were going to a friend’s house on our way to the races and there was this horse bolting down the road,” she said, unable to pinpoint exactly which road it was. “We ripped off our fascinators, our heels and everything! “We just calmed it down and eventually the rider came up.” Ms Van de Parvert said it was “definitely a sight to see”, and one of the more “weird” or “random” moments she’d experienced. “We were already in party mode and had music blaring, and then all off a sudden there’s this horse bolting down the road. Ms Van de Parvert, who is a former stable hand, said there was no harm done from the incident, but added: “I know how much damage horses can do.”

REVEREND Wendy Snook had a vision. It was about two years ago when the Reverend from the Cranbourne Uniting Church decided she wanted to put something special together to commemorate the Anzac Centenary. But what could she do? That’s when it came to her. Last month, after 18 months and hundreds of hours of work, Wendy and other members of the Cranbourne Combined Quilters group presented their Anzac Centenary Quilt Triptych to the Cranbourne RSL. After a heartfelt thank you from Cranbourne RSL president John Wells and many other special guests who attended the handover, Wendy – herself a member of the RSL – said their appreciation meant the world to her and the other quilters. “Anthony Byrne (Holt MP) made a speech and what he said really touched me,” she said. “Australian history is a short time period compared to the US, they have the 4th of July, Independence Day, but Mr Byrne thinks in 100 years in the future that Anzac Day may be our national day, rather than the January Australia Day. “In many ways Anzac draws people together ... as we know, textile art survives hundreds of years and this triptych could well be part of our celebration in a hundred years to come, even though we won’t be here.” Wendy has more than a small connection with Anzac Day. Her great uncle John Harry Fletcher, referenced in sev-

The seven metre by four metre quilt consists of close to 5000 quilt squares as well as countless amounts of blood, sweat and tears. A grant was also given towards the project by the Department of Veteran Affairs. “Our intention was not to glorify war but remember those who served and honour the Anzacs,” Wendy said. “I’m a person who visualises things, and I was thinking about the centenary and I thought this would be really good thing to do.” The last few years focusing on the centenary also saw Wendy reflect on her own service to the armed forces. From 1991 to 1996 Wendy served as the first female chaplain for the RAAF at the Pearce Airbase just outside Perth.

Twenty years on, particular interactions with servicemen during her time at the base are still etched in her mind. “One of the things I did was help out with the Air Force hospital and one day some guys were in there because they had to emergency eject from aircraft, it had crashed,” Wendy said. “I was talking to them about that and it was just amazing to listen to their story ... it was like you see on the movies - the canopy blows off, and they told me there were rockets under their chairs that tipped them backwards and it was like time slowed down. “The canopy of the parachute went out and started to stop their fall, and then it was like time went back to normal. “I’d never talked to anyone in those situations and it touched me ... there were many good things and sad things.”

Acid on his buttocks By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ALLEGED illicit drug trafficker who held police at bay for five hours during a siege in Hampton Park has alleged that battery acid was poured on his buttocks by a bikie gang member. Police informant Detective Senior Constable Rebecca Maiden, of Casey CIU, told a court bail hearing on Monday that Daniel Saab, 22, was remanded in custody after allegedly threatening to kill and falsely imprisoning a close relative. Det Sen Const Maiden alleged Saab had argued with a close relative about money, punched her arm and kicked her while forbidding her to leave her lounge room for several hours on 24 September. The victim was told by Saab that “you’re dead” if she left or called the police, the court heard. The mother eventually convinced Saab to release her to buy him cigarettes. She did not return to the address, but reported the incident to police. About 9.15am the next day, Saab’s cousin visited outside the home’s locked front gate and heard a single gunshot fired inside. After an ensuing five-hour police siege, Saab

surrendered in an observably drug-affected state, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. Inside the house, police found a black imitation firearm, a knife, a firearm butt, a deal bag containing three grams of amphetamines, and unknown tablets believed to be a drug of dependence. Saab had been on bail at the time to face the County Court in April over eight offences involving an alleged Doveton clandestine laboratory on 30 July, the court heard. He was also to face a charge of contravening a community corrections order in January. Since being in custody, Saab had been in hospital receiving skin grafts for his wounds, his lawyer told the court. The lawyer alleged Saab had been recently assaulted with battery acid by a “bikie in the drug culture” prior to the siege. During last weekend, Saab provided a statement to police about the alleged assault in an effort to “stand up to the person who assaulted him”. The accused wanted to extract himself from the drug scene and his ice and amphetamine addiction, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell warned the lawyer such matters should be sealed and handed up to the court. “There’s press in here today.” In considering bail, Ms O’Donnell said the accused had an “extensive history” of “extraordinarily serious charges”. “He seems to be actively involved in the drug industry and perhaps not just a user of drugs”. She said it was unusual that family members were prepared to fund Saab’s long-term rehabilitation. “Generally I’d refuse bail but I have to say that his age has to be a factor here. It’s bail here, and not sentencing, and it’s all about risk. “No-one can say there’s no risk but the risk is somewhat mitigated by the treatment program the family proposes.” Saab was bailed on condition of reporting weekly to police, complying with a family violence intervention order, residing at a specific address and not using illicit drugs. Star News has chosen not to reveal Saab’s bailed address. He was bailed to appear in court on 7 December.

RESIDENTS of a home in Tattle Grove Cranbourne East returned home on Tuesday 6 October to find their house had been flooded. Between 4.50pm on Thursday 1 October and 9.15pm on Tuesday 6 an offender gained entry to the home and turned on one of the washing machine taps. A large proportion of the home has been flooded, but nothing seems to be missing from the property. Police were unable to find damage to the front door, however the ensuite window was left open. Anyone with information relating to the incident is urged to contact the Casey Crime Investigation Unit on 9705 3114 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

CRANBOURNE Library is to celebrate social connection and showcase Indigenous culture. Participants in City of Casey social support program Yarn and Art created the Gathering of the Tribes exhibition. The program was established in August last year to bring together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders from Casey and surrounding suburbs to chat and create art. City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland said the exhibition was a wonderful way to celebrate the program’s success. “Participating in a local social group reduces the feeling of being disconnected and can assist you in forging new relationships, help re-establish old friendships and restore emotional balance,” he said. Councillor Morland said 14 people took part in Yarn and Art each week where they tried painting, mosaicking, wood burning, knitting and gardening. “This program not only provides our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents with an opportunity to learn new things but also supports the community to remain connected to their culture and one another,” he said. “Their artworks evoke story sharing and provide an insight into the diverse history of their lands, waters, families and traditions.” Cr Morland said Joy Sellers joined the group for the social as-

A VOLUNTEER organisation dedicated to supporting disadvantaged children in Casey will this month hold its inaugural fund-raising dinner. The ACE Foundation, which offers funding and encouragement awards to local students, has been running for just over a year and on Friday 23 October will host its first charity dinner. All proceeds from the dinner will go directly to the children. ACE chairman Leon Shapero, managing director of the Thompson Road Clinic in Cranbourne, spoke earlier this year about his and the charity’s mission to help educate local teenage students. “Many children in our Casey community face substantial hurdles,” Leon said. “Language, cultural, financial, family fracture and social

On the edge of poverty By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ILLEGAL rooming houses, online gaming addictions and housing stress is on the rise in Casey, putting people on the edge of poverty. Executive officer at Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) Leanne Petrides said, on average, the community organisation gave away one swag a week. “We have a drop in crisis support service, and about 20 per cent of the people that walk in for that service each month are brand new clients and are new to the area,” Ms Petrides said. Giving away the swags donated by Cranbourne Rotary, Ms Petrides said housing stress was what drove people into CISS. “Sometimes, there’s nothing else we can do for them, but give them a swag and try and make them a little bit more comfortable which is really sad in a country like ours,” she said. In the past 17 years, Ms Petrides has seen Casey’s population skyrocket along with disadvantage and poverty. “When I first started, we would be lucky to see six people in a day and they’d come in for some help with food, yesterday we saw 32 just for emergency relief, and the amount of disadvantage tends to be a bit of a pattern with the new growth areas,” she said.

“People get really excited and aspirational, and they move in to the area because they’ve been able to just afford a mortgage, but they still might be living on the edge and things catch up.” Ms Petrides said a lot of the people she saw in Casey were casually employed or on welfare benefits and when circumstances changed they struggled to support themselves. “Their casual hours might get cut, they might get sick and they don’t get sick leave, they don’t get holiday pay and they still have a mortgage or rent to pay and the majority are living on a very low income,” she said. With many people spending up to 70 per cent of their low income on keeping a roof over their head, Ms Petrides said the bare necessities became unaffordable. “Without a doubt housing stress in Casey South is the biggest driver of people seeking help.” Out of what Ms Petrides calls pure desperation, she has witnessed both illegal and legal rooming houses, with up to four grown men sleeping in bunk beds increase across Casey. “We have a more diverse population now, and we are seeing asylum seekers placed on community detention in Casey living off 89 per cent of the lowest welfare, who are not allowed to work or study and still

have to pay rent and food,” she said. “So you can get six asylum seeker males living in one house just trying to get by, by pooling their welfare.” “Some are registered, but some are illegal and the occupants would be homeless without them,” she said. In recent months, CISS has also noticed a new trend in expensive shared bunk bed rooms which have increased right across Casey. “It’s really sad – they are desperate,” Ms Petrides said. Along with housing stress, the team at CISS recognise pokie machines as another severe problem. “I think a bigger hidden issue is gambling, it’s more common in Casey than people realise,” Ms Petrides explained. “People are more reluctant to speak up about their gambling addiction and how it's impacting their lives because there’s a shame attached to it.” But it’s not just gambling that’s burdening the Casey community – Ms Petrides said online gaming addictions are ruining relationships at a rapidly increasing rate. “We have people who come in for counselling because their gaming is impacting their lives, sometimes we see their family members who can’t deal with it anymore and other times a couple will come in together,” she said.

A flair for fashion By GEORGIA WESTGARTH FLORAL flair, lace and bold colour stole the runway at this year’s TAB Cranbourne Cup Fashions on the Field competition as more than 30 brave women strolled down the trackside catwalk. The beaming sun set a glorious backdrop for the fashion headquarters with the three judges blown away at the race-day-appropriate, well-co-ordinated and stylish frocks and fascinators on show. The experienced judging panel of three, model and milliner Caitrin O’Rourke, trainer at Ken Keys Racing Kasey Keys and face of ‘Flemington’s Playground of Racing Royalty’ campaign, Alison Saville said they were “very impressed”. “The millinery on show today was outstanding - what we look for is really well put together ensembles which reflect their personality and compliments their body shape,” Ms Saville said. With three competitions judged on the day, five lucky ladies got to take home a sash in the Lady of the Day over-35s category, the Young Lady of the Day under-35s category and the prize for Best Millinery. Dressed in red lace and white tulle and a pair of pale pink lace gloves, Alison Spence, from St Kilda, won the hotly contested Young Lady of the Day competition. After three heats and against 10 finalists, Ms Spence took home the sash and collection of prizes in a Chi Chi London dress, Olga Berg handbag,

heels from Myer and hat by Emily O’Regan Millinery. “This was one of the easiest outfits I’ve put together, the hardest part was finding the shoes and gloves to match,” Ms Spence said after her win. Having competed in the Caulfield Cup fashions on the field once before Ms Spence knew what was important that being ladylike gloves. “I found the gloves on eBay and had to dye them myself,” she said. With everything matching down to her red sparkly stud earrings Ms Spence took centre stage under the fashions marquee with Lady of the Day winner, 55-year-old Anne Kelly from Beaconsfield. Shining in pearls and representing Berwick and Pakenham boutiques Ms Kelly was the only contestant to wear a coat on the day and was humbled by the win. “I just loved these purple heels by Moschino and I made the outfit around the shoes,” Ms Kelly said. Wearing a hat made by a friend, a baby blue shift dress by Nicola Finetti and a purple clutch from Embellish Fashions in Pakenham it was Ms Kelly’s pastel printed coat from Pol Boutique in Berwick that stood out among the competitors. “I worked on the outfit for a few weeks and just can’t believe I’ve won,” she said. Seasoned racewear fashionista, Ms Saville, said it was lovely to see lace gloves and a coat on show. “I do love gloves, it’s very ladylike

Polished perfection. The Cranbourne Cup trophies that were up for grabs on Sunday 11 October. Above: Lightning put on a colourful show but delayed race 10 as horses and jockeys retreated undercover. Right: Rain, wind and thunder drenched the lawn as race goers ran for cover!

The lyrics “Too hot, hot damn” played in the background as eligible bachelor, Constable Ryan Blake, took to the runway, giving the crowd of ladies his best blue steel. It’s fair to say Constable Ryan was a hit. Right: Aline Koper, Cassie Dunkley and Amy Hall snapped up a seat on the lawn for the big race!

Driving away in a new car, Lisa Moyle and 9 year old Bentley were blown away with the win! and I think gloves and a coat are very appropriate for fashions on the field,” Ms Saville said. Red made a prominent appearance on the catwalk along with high neck lines and pearl accessories but it was the man dressed in navy and high-vis yellow that got everyone talking.

With the lads missing out on their chance to trot the runway this year Constable Ryan Blake decided to step up to the plate, mastering some poses and delighting crowds when it was announced the Cranbourne police officer was also single. The bachelor was called up for an

encore performance and even gave the girls his best ’blue steel’ impression. The winners took home a broad range of prizes from major sponsors including Review, Ella Bache Cranbourne, Brazilian Butterfly, De Bortoli Wines and Felicity Northeast Millinery.

Arrest for kill threat By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A CRANBOURNE North man will spend at least a week in custody after allegedly threatening to kill his estranged wife soon after being arrested for breaching an intervention order. The car mechanic had moved out of the family home from his wife of 25 years in April, a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing was told on 11 October. About 7pm on 10 October, the man breached the order when he entered the house and helped himself to a beer. He tried to engage the woman in conversation and refused requests to leave. When police arrived, he was asleep in his vehicle parked on the nature strip. Upon his arrest, he told police in

an interview that the intervention order was “bulls***”, police informant First Constable Monique Oldfield told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. “It’s supposed to bring family together but it really doesn’t,” the accused allegedly told police. About 1.30am on 11 October - 30 minutes after being released by police - the man sent a flurry of abusive text messages to the victim telling her she was “going to die in your sleep, b****” and “I am on my way”. Later that morning, the accused was found asleep in his car in the victim’s driveway and again arrested by police. First Const Oldfield told the court later that day that the accused claimed he intended to commit suicide there.

In his bail application, the accused told the court he’d felt depressed in recent weeks and had no intention to harm the victim. “I’m quite concerned about my mental health and I’m concerned to get back to work because I’ll lose my job - which will put my stress on me,” the accused told the court. His charges included breaching an intervention order, breaching bail,

threatening to kill and committing an indictable offence while on bail. He had pleaded guilty to assaulting and contravening an intervention order against the same victim at the court in August. Magistrate Pauline Spencer refused bail due to the applicant’s risk of re-offending. “(The victim) needs to expect the intervention order is there to protect her. “I can’t have any confidence that you will follow it.” The applicant was remanded in custody to appear at the court on 19 October. For crisis support, call beyondblue on 1300 224 636, or Lifeline on 131 114.

Intruder squeezes in A HOME on Madison Avenue, Narre Warren, was ransacked on Tuesday 6 October but nothing was stolen. It’s believed the offender entered the property between 6.45am and 3.45pm through the doggy door. Detective Senior Constable, Daniel Jacobi said because there was no evidence of a break in from any other door or window, the doggy door measuring 30cm by 40cm was “the only possible entry point”. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Casey Crime Investigation Unit on 9705 3114 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Personal trainer, Troy Hawkins at his second home, Casey Picture: DONNA OATES ARC. 145426 After enduring 18 surgeries so far in his life, Troy has remained determined and continues to chase his dream. While he relies on crutches and a wheelchair, he has never been deterred from becoming a personal trainer. “I’ve always been interested in the sport field, and I’ve always wanted to do what everyone else was doing,” Troy said. “I’ve always wanted to push those boundaries.”

He also credits Casey ARC with giving him another fresh outlook on things. “Basically I found I needed a change from what I was doing previously,” he said of his new position at Casey ARC. “I saw the advert online and went through the interview process ... they gave me the job within a few weeks. “Working there has been really good; it’s just a great environment.”

TROY Hawkins has never forgotten when someone told him he’d never be a personal trainer. Born with Spina Bifida, a degenerative spinal condition, 26-year-old Troy has a hole in his lower back which severed his nerves, making him very weak in his lower back and legs. When Troy spoke to someone about completing a Certficate III in Fitness, they told him he wouldn’t be physically capable. But Troy, from Cranbourne, bottled that comment and used it as motivation. After five years working in the field Troy has recently taken a role as a personal trainer at Casey ARC in Narre Warren. He’s come a long way. “He said I was physically incapable of doing the course, and having someone say something like that really hurts you,” Troy said. “I was extremely devastated, I was with my Dad at the time and I remember it, I bawled my eyes out for two hours. “But Dad gave me that encouragement, my Dad and my Mum, they encouraged me to do as much as I could and that helped me develop the right mindset and right work ethic.” Troy cites his parents, Roland and Tracey, as two of the biggest inspirations in his life.

Tourism

145062

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM JUST a short drive from the city, the Casey-Cardinia region can feel a world away from the buzz of the city making it an ideal tourist destination. Congratulations to the finalists in the tourism category of the Casey-Cardinia business awards. Spread over 10 hectares of Pearcedale bushland, the aim of Moonlit Sanctuary Conservation Park is twofold: to protect native Australian species, and to educate guests on native plants and animals and the importance of conservation. Visitors to the park will meet endangered species, feed kangaroos, pet koalas and encounter Australian natives such as dingoes, wombats and various reptiles. Living up to its name, the sanctuary comes alive at night with guests spotting beautiful night birds on a lantern-lit tour. The park has a strong fo-

cus on conservation, running a breeding program, and has implemented several water and energy saving measures. They also focus on education, with schools regularly visiting the sanctuary to learn about its animals and practices. Racing comes to life at Pakenham Racing Club. Backed by over 100 years of history, the brand new Tynong facility boasts two hospitality and entertainment venues as well as a 2400-metre turf track and a 2000-metre Polytrack. The events centre can cater for up to 1000 people and features stunning floor to ceiling windows for optimum race viewing. Over 40 meets per season are held at Pakenham, drawing crowds from around the state. With a 16,000 capacity on racedays, the Pakenham Racing Club brings the elegance and excitement of rac-

ing to Casey-Cardinia, in turn providing business opportunities for other tourism operators in the area. Guests to the region will find themselves comfortable and well-accommodated at Quest Narre Warren. Quest’s one, two or three bedroom apartments will cater to groups of any size, whatever the reason for their stay may be. Quest offers all the conveniences of top serviced accommodation, including on-site reception, internet access, breakfast options, housekeeping and 24 hour on-site management. There are also conference facilities, barbecues, car parking and a swimming pool onsite. Located conveniently on Princes Highway, Quests offers a modern and welcoming feel to all its guests. The winner of the Tourism Award will be announced at a gala dinner on 22 October.

Clean, green advantage Environmental Sustainability

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM IN a competitive business climate, environmentally-conscious companies set themselves apart. Congratulations to the finalists in the Environmental Sustainability category of the Casey-Cardinia Business Awards. Beaconsfield Dental is a leading dental health provider in the region, and has impressively incorporated sustainability measures into their business model. The building features 60 solar panels, capable of generating up to 100 kilowatts of energy each day. The garden also features an array of Australian plants, with 500 natives complementing the surrounding Akoonah Park.

Renovators to benefit from home giants TWO hardware giants are now competing for business at Cranbourne Home. The centre on Saturday 10 October officially opened a $40 million expansion that included Masters Home Improvement. It joined rival Bunnings in the Springhill DriveThompsons Road precinct - the first time in Australia they’ve traded within the same centre. Aventus Property CEO Darren Holland said not only could the two co-exist, the arrangement would benefit shoppers. “Two homewares giants competing will make renovating in this area more affordable,” he said. The new Masters store will create 130 jobs. Cranbourne Home will next year add another 7000 square metres of large-for-

Double glazing, full insulation, solar hot water, LED lighting and tanks providing water for the garden and toilet are all features that have earned Beaconsfield Dental recognition as an environmentally conscious business. Ten-Rose International Simmental adopts similar values in an entirely different industry. The enterprise has implemented several strategies as part of their commitment to holistic management of cattle and the land. Feed efficiency plays an important role in the business. DNA testing is used to identify high feed efficient cattle, meaning less energy is required in the production of beef. The testing also makes for a valuable commodity - cattle buyers prioritise high feed efficiency when purchasing cows. The business also places a high importance on preserving the habitat of native flora and fauna. They have developed and fenced off a native reserve on the farm, now protected by a Federal Native Title. They plan to plant 10,000 native trees over

the next few years. Kirsten and David Bak own K. and D. Bak Painting and Decorating and have not only been nominated for their environmentally-friendly business practices but also in the trades category of the awards. K. and D. Bak place a high priority on both the health of their customers and the environment. They steer away from conventional paints which continue to release dangerous solvents after they dry. Instead, the business use zero or low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paints in consideration of the continued health of their clients. The business is also a registered Enviropainter, meaning they have taken an accredited course in sustainable painting practices. They have accreditation as a HIA Greensmart Professional, accreditation as a GreenPainter and accreditation in implementing safe lead paint and asbestos work practices. The winner of the Environmental Sustainability Award will be announced at a gala dinner on 22 October.

Business acumen and expertise CRANBOURNE businesses can get free advice on sharing expertise. Cranbourne Chamber of Commerce and Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) are joining forces to present a networking night themed Business and Community Partnerships on Thursday 5 November. CISS manager Leanne Petrides will help guests to explore and examine how businesses and non-profit organisations can share expertise and information to service and support customers and staff.

She has 17 years’ experience in the Cranbourne community and a keen interest in networking and partnerships. These elements have ensured steady growth for the organisation, from its small start to the largest support agency in the region. The event will be held at 156 Sladen Street, Cranbourne - the yellow brick building next to the old shire offices - from 5.45pm to 7.15pm. Register at www.trybooking. com/163939 by 30 October. Email cranbournecc@gmail.com or call 0437 092 468 for more information.

Aventus bought Cranbourne Home in 2004 and has doubled its size over the past 10 years.

It started as a joint venture between local residents and long-term friends John Dunscombe and Brett Blundy. Mr Blundy grew up on

a farm in Clyde and opened his first retail store in Pakenham in 1980. Disco Duck was to become music chain Sanity.

WOOLWORTHS has opened the doors to its new Cranbourne East store. The $5 million development on the corner of Linsell Boulevard and Narre Warren Road officially opened at 8am on Wednesday 14 October. Store manager Joey Zahra said it would employ 95 people. “We are delighted that the opening

of the new Woolworths sees us welcoming so many new people to the company from the Cranbourne East area,” he said. The store has 21 checkouts, a bakery, delicatessen and seafood bar. “Our aim is to connect customers directly with our local fresh producers as much as possible,” he said.

Cafe for special care OPENING day is fast approaching for the Retro 55 Café located at the Specialist Centre at 55 Kangan Drive, Berwick. Café owners Craig and Donna Lewis have been working tirelessly to fit out the retro themed space and refine a menu which offers a delicious selection of raw items in addition to the regular comfort foods. Craig and Donna have run Café Con Leche at St John of God Berwick Hospital for approximately five years and now extend on their experience to also feed patients, caregivers and visitors to the Specialist Centre. The Specialist Centre, home to the St John of God Day Oncology Unit, offers comprehensive cancer services to local patients. “We have chosen the retro theme as it is bright and cheery,” explained Craig. “We want to bring a smile to the faces of those suffering from cancer. Those visiting the centre for treatment can come downstairs and have a break and enjoy a bite to eat in a lively environment.” The raw menu fills a niche in the local market for healthy and appetising foods which are vegetarian and vegan and free from refined sugar, dairy, gluten and soy. The couple, along with their team, prepare 90 per cent of their menu from scratch from their additional site, Earthy Eat-

FOR STYLE AND FUNCTIONALITY

FROM PAGE 1. PROFINE pride themselves on the steadfast trilogy of “quality homes, outstanding service and competitive prices” and they believe their new Roseleigh 22 fits all that criteria. Currently on display at 4-10 Bonnington Blvd, Clyde North, the Roseleigh is a home to suit a family looking for style and functionality in equal measures. The Roseleigh is a turn-

key product featuring a choice of laminate or tiles on the floor in selected areas, carpet, blinds, flydoors and flyscreens, landscaping of up to 400m2, coloured driveway, panel door and clotheslines among its finished product items. It is one of the latest designs from Profine an Australian building company that has been servicing Melbourne for more than 20 years. Entirely owned and operated by the same family since the

company’s beginning, the team brings to the table not only the expertise afforded by over two decades’ experience, but also the unique dedication that comes from a family building homes for other families. Averaging 50 homes per year, the expert team have the capacity to build to all requirements, whether that be: townhouse developments, single-storey homes, double-storey homes, custom-designed homes and house

and land packages. The company believes their small annual output allows them to deliver a higher standard of quality control and personalisation to each and every project they oversee. Through every stage of the building process, the building manager conducts stringent quality control checks to ensure the home will be built to last. Whether or not the customer

has built before, they hope their “easy-to-understand” building process gives the home owner total control and transparency - from the initial deposit right through to maintenance. Find the display at 4-10 Bonnington Blvd, Clyde North, for further information phone 9904 8675, 0409 781 671 or contact alfred@profine.com.au. YOUNG FAMILY BUYS FOR THE FUTURE

First home buyers Deandra and Cameron standing on their very own patch of Ramlegh Springs and the future site of their first family home. visited all the other developments in the area before we made our final decision, Deandra said. “The major difference between Ramlegh Springs and the other estates was the features in the masterplan - the shopping centre and wetlands and walking tracks, as well as the childcare and medical centres and the proposed primary school. “Having all these amenities and services contained within the estate will make our life so much easier - Cam and I both have to travel to get to work every day so it will be nice not having to jump in the car every time we need a litre of milk.

DEANDRA De Silva admits when she and her partner Cameron Coleiro were presented with the contract to purchase their first home, a spacious four-bedroom plus study house located in Stage 1 of Ramlegh Springs, they were both thinking well into the future when they signed on the dotted line. Although Deandra, 23, and Cameron, 26, didn’t have plans to start a family any time soon, their decision to buy at Ramlegh Springs - on a big block a short walk from the development’s long list of on-site amenities - would ensure a smooth transition when the pitterpatter of tiny feet becomes a part of their everyday life. “We did heaps of research and

“We both can’t wait to walk to the shops, or to drop the kids off at school or see the doctor, and all our neighbours will be in the same boat, which will, hopefully, make for a really friendly, tight-knit local community. Ramlegh Springs’s great value for money and lot inclusions, with front and rear landscaping included in the cost of each Stage 1 home site, meant Cam and Deandra could afford a home which gave them a bit of room to grow and would allow them to plan for their future, a luxury that would have been out of reach had they decided to buy closer to the CBD. “We both love that Ramlegh

Springs is a little bit off the beaten track, Deandra said. “There’s no traffic noise from main roads, it’s peaceful and quiet, and if we have to visit a major shopping centre, Cranbourne is just down the road, Berwick is only 10 minutes away and the Monash Freeway gives us access to the city and the beach. Deandra and Cam’s hopes to start building before Christmas are on track, with Stage 1 civil engineering works already underway, representing a major milestone for the project. With the project launching less than eight months ago, it is also a significant achievement for the Macdonald family which for decades farmed

the land now being transformed into Ramlegh Springs and are now overseeing that process in partnership with APD Projects. Upon completion, Stage 1 will feature 66 new homes located close to the beautiful Ramlegh Park. For more information visit www.ramleghsprings.com.au, find Ramlegh Springs on Facebook or contact estate managers Trudi Kerr or Ted O’Grady from Oliver Hume New Communities on 9684 8144. The Ramlegh Springs sales office is open seven days a week from 11am to 6pm on Pattersons Road, Clyde North, off BerwickCranbourne Road.

SPRING OPENS DOORS TO A NEW HOME DUST off the cobwebs on a dream to build the perfect new home this spring with Peet’s fun-filled Spring Open House event at the Livingston display village in Cranbourne East on Saturday 17 October. Peet is throwing open the doors to 17 new homes - designed by nine of Melbourne’s leading builders - in the heart of its Livingston community to help inspire prospective new homeowners. The award-winning developer is encouraging people to make an afternoon of it, bringing its display villages to life with a whole host of family-friendly entertainment and activities, mouth-watering refreshments, and the opportunity to win a $2000 Freedom voucher! As part of the celebration, 21 new homesites will be released on the day. These lots range in size from 336 to 777 square metres and are all in easy walking distance of the new Megasaurus Park. Currently under construction, the new park is set to feature a cutting-edge playground with an impressive skeletal dinosaur climbing frame, a slide, cradle swing, climbing scales and even a zip line. “People are at the heart of all our Peet communities, including Livingston, and we hope new homebuyers get a feel for the style of property they could be living in,” said Peet managing director and CEO, Brendan Gore. “This event will offer a great opportunity to experience firsthand the community buyers could become a part of when they take that next step of building a home.”

Visitors on the day will be encouraged to stroll around the display village, explore the latest in sophisticated styles and modern home design, and find the ideal floorplan to suit their own lifestyles and budget. Builders featured within the new Livingston Display Village

include Eight Homes, Simonds Homes, Burbank, Dennis Family Homes, Boutique, Homebuyers Centre, Hotondo, JG King and Amaroo Homes. The Livingston Spring Open House event will begin at 1pm on Bathgate Crescent, Cranbourne East and include three hours

of entertainment from roving performers, caricature and balloon artists, food and drink vans and a display village challenge which will invite visitors to discover unique facts from the builders’ homes. Livingston in Cranbourne East is already home to more than 450

households, many of whom were attracted to the estate by the more than 10 hectares of parklands and open space it will feature upon completion, as well as its proximity to Casey RACE and Casey Fields. For more information visit livingstoncranbourne.com.au

Digitalism a clear winner By RUSSELL BENNETT JOHN Sadler’s Digitalism led from start to finish in Sunday’s $300,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup, recording another emotion-charged win for owner Phil Sly. “He’s really enjoying his horses at the moment, in fact it’s given him something to live for,” Sadler said after the race. “We all want him to be around for a lot longer.” Sly, who has been battling cancer for the past five years, was trackside on Saturday as another one of his horses Politeness - won the Cape Grim Beef Steaks. And on Sunday, Sadler paid tribute to him after apprentice jockey Michael Dee rode Digitalism to a big win - just edging out Pat Carey’s Kareeming. “The older he’s got, the more mature he’s got,” Sadler said of the sixyear-old gelding. “It’s a case of a happy horse racing well and we’re trying to keep him happy “I didn’t think he was good enough to win today, to be honest. “Kareeming looked like he had him when they straightened. “I went down to the fence so I could watch opposite the TV and they just walked up the straight - nothing wanted to lead, and he (Dee) did the right thing, the kid. He’s a really promising kid and even though I didn’t want to be in front, going so slowly I thought he was as good a chance as any. “It’s just a real thrill to win a Cranbourne Cup with a horse like Digitalism.” For his part, Dee admitted leading from the start wasn’t the original idea. “That wasn’t the plan, but once he came from the barriers he pulled his way up I just had to settle there,” he said. “Once I got there I slowed him up and we were able to get a comfortable lead through the race. “He’s got a huge heart and he fought it out well. “To actually pull it off is a huge thrill. I’m amazed I’ve won the Cranbourne Cup.” In the lead-in to the Cup - the $100,000 Apache Cat Classic - Pat Carey’s General Jackson caused the mother of all upsets, knocking off previously undefeated Singapore star Super One. “He’s a tough old prize fighting sprinter - that’s what he looks like - but he was able to get the job done nicely and hung on well,” Carey said after the race. “Some of my long-term clients are in the horse so it’s just fantastic to have everyone involved. It’s great. Cranbourne is to absolutely be commended - they’ve put on a fantastic program for the horses - and it was a great ride by Pat Moloney too.” Moloney said the horse responded just when it had to. “He relaxed really nicely and when I gave him a niggle he gave me a little kick and that probably took a bit of the spring out of the others after we were riding at a nice tempo,” he said.

General Jackson, ridden by Patrick Moloney (centre, green cap), recorded a huge win over the previously unbeaten Super One in the Apache Cat Classic.

Lisa Moyle and her nine-year-old son Bentley were blown away by winning a brand new Hyundai Tucson. “This is fantastic. Pat (Carey) has been a massive supporter of mine - he’s one of my biggest supporters - and I can’t thank him enough. “He presented the horse today in magnificent order - you wouldn’t see a better horse in the yard than his horse.” Super One’s trainer, Michael Freedman, admitted his disappointment with the result after the race. “On face value, a little bit disappointed,” he said. “He sort of had his chance sitting outside the eventual winner. “He looked a little bit unbalanced coming around the corner. “I do think fitness-wise there’s a bit to come with him, because he hasn’t had a run since the end of July.” On Friday night at Cranbourne, Mark Kavanagh’s Long Face Grace with Glen Boss on board - edged out Zanteca to win the $100,000 Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate, named in honour of the 2011 Cox Plate winner which was trained at Cranbourne but died unexpectedly in 2012.

Cranbourne Cup-winning jockey Michael Dee was all smiles after the big race.

Latham lights up the WGCA By RUSSELL BENNETT

Sen Sathyajith is ready to build a few innings at the state level, representing the Victorian schoolboys at the upcoming national under-12 cricket championships. 145453 Picture: JARROD POTTER

State nod for Sathyajith, 12 By JARROD POTTER CARRYING on the family tradition, Cranbourne cricketer Sen Sathyajith has earned his first schoolboy’s cap. Cranbourne Cricket Club’s 12-year-old batting powerhouse fought hard to go one step better this year and make it into the School Sport Victoria (SSV) under-12 cricket team. Making the team, the same side his older brother Nivin made two years ago, was a great honour for Sathyajith ... especially considering he had to toil to get into the line-up. “I was pretty proud to get in,” Sathyajith said. “I tried out last year and made it through the first round and was cut in the second round this year I just made it to the last round and into the state team. “I reckon last year I didn’t really train much, but this

year I had more determination to make it really.” He wields his blade right handed and although Sathyajith doesn’t mind charging in as an occasional pace-bowler, he sees himself more of a top-order batsman who likes to play his way into a big innings. “I’m not really hard hitting - I just play my shots whenever I see them,” Sathyajith said. “Usually I’m not a fast batsman, but I’m not that slow.” He’s not just a cricket star on the rise, with Sathyajith playing for Casey Comets under-12s and under-15s in the soccer - getting the best and fairest for the younger side. It leaves him with the ageold dilemma many teenagers eventually face - whether to stick with summer sport or winter sport.

“In the winter, I want to be a professional soccer player, but in summer I want to be a professional cricket player - so I never really know,“ Sathyajith said. “In the under-12s, I play centre-mid usually, but in the under-15s I play left back.” But with the sun out, he’s focused solely on cricket this summer, playing under-15s at Cranbourne with his older brother and Sathyajith hopes to get back into the DDCA representative side and eventually the Southern Pioneers region team, too. Sathyajith will head off with his Victorian schoolboys side to Brisbane in January for the national championships. He wanted to thank his family, his coach Bathiya Perera and all the clubs that have supported him throughout his cricketing journey so far.

TOORADIN Cricket Club president Kane Latham is well known for pinning the ears back and going for his shots at the top of the order. In fact, he’s well known at the Seagulls’ nest for tapping his bat harder and harder at his crease the more aggressive he gets. He’s been responsible for some blistering knocks over the years - such as a ridiculous half century prior to drinks in last year’s winning West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) Sub-District grand final side. But what he produced for the Subbies on Saturday at Lakeside against league newcomers Kalgidhar would have to go down as one of the most amazing knocks in WGCA history - a century in just 34 balls. Far from daunted by the prospect of facing the reigning-premiers in their first ever WGCA clash, the Blues - as Kalgidhar is known - set an imposing 244-run chase thanks to pair of half centuries and a string of handy contributions. Their openers put on more than 100 for the first wicket. Latham, the Seagulls’ skipper, used himself as his side’s eighth bowler and took the first wicket ... caught and bowled. He ended up with 3/30 from seven overs. Then, with his side needing more than a run a ball to win in its chase, Latham took 21 off the first over. The tone was set for what was to come. “What I said to the boys at the halfway mark was ‘Look, they’ve made the runs - we can make them too’,” Latham said. “We all had a job to do and we had to back ourselves in.” Latham brought up his ton at the end of the ninth over. Having faced four dot balls and a wide, he only needed 29 scoring shots. He ultimately holed out on the boundary in the 18th over for 133 with the score at 1/151. All told he belted 23 fours and four sixes ... 116 runs in boundaries. “But if we didn’t get the win it was all for nothing,” he told the Gazette after the game. “I may as well have gone out for a duck.”

Kane Latham gave his young son Hunter a huge hug after last year's premiership win over Pakenham. On Saturday, the Seagulls president was again at his hard-hitting best. 136471 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS The Seagulls passed the Blues’ 5/243 in the 37th over of the 40-over aside one-dayer at 5/248. Latham rated his knock as “the most fun” he’s played so far, and his third favourite ever behind half-centuries in premiership wins against St Francis Xavier and Pakenham. He said he’s tried to curb his aggression in the past, but curtailing his natural game just doesn’t work. “It’s not that I rate myself or anything, but I open the batting because you tend to get loose balls from bowlers,” Latham said. “The ball is hard, the bowlers aren’t warm and you get loose deliveries.” He rated the 30 from teenage opening partner Lewis Johnson as particularly important on Saturday, as well as the contributions from Andrew Proctor (27), Chris Brennan (19), Ross Douglas (13) and Mitch Halstead (16 not out) on a weekend where the Gulls were low on player numbers across the board. Latham said he was “incredibly happy” that his side didn’t get carried away with the opening overs only to lose the plot and crumble late in the innings. “Overall it was a fantastic game of cricket and I’m just re-

ally proud of the way the boys backed themselves in,” he said. “In the past we’d have been pretty deflated going in chasing 243 in 40 overs. “We got beaten by Emerald by 150 runs at the start of last season - we got bowled out for 70 chasing 220. We’re horribly slow starters but instead of dwelling on the things we could’ve done wrong, I thought we fought back really well.” Latham also raved about Kalgidhar’s debut performance in a match played in great spirit, saying the Blues’ inclusion into the WGCA could have an “astronomical” effect on the league in the coming years. “It’s stereotypical, and I don’t know if it’s growing up playing cricket on the subcontinent, but they play so well with their wrists,” he said of the Blues. “Okay they’re not (Seagulls Premier star) Tom Hussey or (Pakenham opener) Russ Lehman, but they’re like (former Cardinia gun) Mark Cooper where they know their games inside-out. “I’m looking forward to playing them again at Tooradin but on that fast ground they’re definitely not going to be cellardwellers. They’re going to give it a real shake.”

New name, new look at the park By JARROD POTTER LEATHER on willow is about as traditional as cricket gets ... but the surface it is played on at a newly christened Cranbourne oval is a different story. Carlisle Park - home of the recently relocated Lyndhurst Vikings - played host to its first West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) District fixture at the venue on Saturday against Pakenham UpperToomuc. With a completely synthetic surface - as the pitch, outfield and sub-surface are all manufactured to replace a traditional grass set-up - the Cranbourne facility is only the third venue

in the state to literally lay out the green carpet. Robert Fuller bowled the first official ball at Carlisle Park Reserve as the Under-12 Vikings battled Clyde on Saturday morning before the senior side took to the field. Carlisle Park Vikings president Aaron Straughair said the surface made for a cracking clash against Pakenham UpperToomuc, which the Vikings first XI claimed a 32-run triumph its inaugural win on the new surface. “It was a good competitive game - not a lot between bat and ball and was a tough match,” Straughair said after

the match. Vikings’ top order bat Mark Henry thought it was a surface for perfect play either with bat or ball as there’s no unexpected gremlins in the field. “No excuse for misfields, best surface to play on ... you get value for shots 95 per cent of the time,” Henry said. “It’s by far the best surface to play and field on, as you don’t need to worry about potholes and rolled ankles.” For anyone interested in joining the new-look club and playing on the artificial turf, contact Carlisle Park at carlislepark@club.cricketvictoria. com.au.

Spolly opens with a bang By JARROD POTTER DDCA - TURF 1 REVIEW A Spolly century highlighted the opening round of DDCA Turf 1 cricket as the Eagles poleaxed Lyndale into submission. LYNDALE v CRANBOURNE Steve Spoljaric wasted no time going about yet another Wookey Medal as he blasted 132 not out to rocket Cranbourne (3/225) to victory against lowly Lyndale (87). Spoljaric didn’t have much help from the rest of the top order but found support at number five via Jordan Cleland (56no), with the tandem smashing a 156-run partnership. Spoljaric put his feet up at first slip for the bowling as he let the rest of the side clean up Lyndale for a pittance. Matt Kelly, Cam Dinger and Bradon Tyzzer each picked up a brace to give Cranbourne plenty to smile about after one round. The Eagles face Parkfield at home on Saturday while Lyndale is off to North Dandenong. BERWICK v DANDENONG WEST A new-look Bears attack saw off Dandenong West (5/175), but not after the Bulls put up plenty of headaches for Berwick (5/176) to counteract. A captain’s knock from Matt Sofoulis (75) pushed the score along as he and Matt Collett (43) knocked in a century opening stand. Their tandem was shattered by Berwick leg-spinning import Jack Williams (2/46) who kept the ball up there despite the threat of being belted about the postage-stamp sized Arch Brown Reserve. Williams was rewarded with another scalp soon after as another new recruit – Carlton Premier Cricket champion Nathan Pilon made his first dismissal. Ryan Crawford (3/26) made some timely dismissals to keep Dandy West from taking innings’ honours. Some smash and bash from Sofoulis and Rajpal Dhillon (24) pushed the run rate towards the completion as the Bulls posted 175. Pilon (35) and returning Bear Josh Holden (61) steadied the ship after Ryan Williamson’s three ball quacker. Crawford (40no) finished the job alongside Holden to give the Bears the first points of the season. Berwick heads off to face the reigning premiers Mordialloc while Dandenong West hosts the reinvigorated Buckley Ridges.

Berwick’s Jack Williams showed he’s not just making up the numbers as a token spinner, with the Bears leggie ripping through Dandenong Pictures: JARROD POTTER West. 145451

Matt Sofoulis’ 75 almost gave Dandenong West bragging rights in round one against Berwick... almost. 145451 HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v NORTH DANDENONG The newest Soupman Hari Krishan (86) excelled in his DDCA debut to help Heinz Southern Districts (6/213) brush aside North Dandenong (162). Combining with the evergreen youngster Brad Downe (67), Krishan enlightened the crowd at Reedy Reserve with a smack-about half-century only halted by Caleb Millman (2/41). The Northerners tried to hunt down the tal-

ly, but couldn’t stop the multi-faceted Cobras strikeforce as Ashan Bandaranayake (3/32) and Krishan (2/26) finished the job. Heinz faces Narre Warren in a cross-town showdown while North Dandenong hosts Lyndale in a fateful early season battle. BUCKLEY RIDGES v SPRINGVALE SOUTH What many thought was the match of the round lived up to expectation as

Swans go down fighting By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUNDS 2 AND 3 DO NOT let the scoreboard suggest otherwise, Casey-South Melbourne has come to fight this Victorian Premier Cricket season. Despite being 0-3, sitting down the bottom of the ladder and struggling after an off-season exodus, the Swans have gutsily fought out another weekend to almost snare its maiden win in 2015/'16. Geelong and Dandenong rolled Casey-South Melbourne in the weekend’s double-header, but the Swans were well and truly in the hunt for both matches until centurions struck. Casey set Geelong 4/217 after James Seymour (50) and Kasun Suriaratchie (77) got out of the blocks quickly before Keirran Voekl (45) helped finish the job. But the problem for Casey came in the shape of former Australian all-rounder Andrew McDonald (103), who struck a better than run a ball century to take the points after 37.4 overs. Sunday proved similar for the Swans with Seymour (86) and Suriaratchie(89) piling on a 165-run opening stand before the innings ground to

a halt. Justin Butterfield (3/40) struck to take the initiative away from the visitors as the rest of the order failed to fire. It gave Casey 6/231 to work with and outside of a stellar knock from Dandenong captain Tom Donnell (119), it was a tally that gave the Panthers top order a lot of headaches. Dandenong held on to win via Duckworth-Lewis at 5/203 after 43 overs as the buffeting rain hit Shepley Oval to deprive Casey-South Melbourne of yet another closely fought clash. “We need to break that big partnership and need to find a way to get 10 wickets,” Casey captain Lachlan Sperling said. “We’ve had chances in all three games and just haven’t been able to grasp it. But we’re showing good signs and there were a lot of positives to come out of the weekend.” Sperling was impressed with his openers in particular who have guided the batting effort thus far. Seymour is in early Ryder Medal calibre form, smashing 81, 50 and 86 from his first three digs in the new colours at Casey Fields and alongside Suriaratchie – who smashed 77 and 89 on the weekend – have formed a strong new opening tandem.

Springvale South (6/157) chased down a slender score from Buckley Ridges (8/153 on their minuscule Park Oval. Disruption throughout the innings halted the Ridges attack – returning captain DJ Watson (16) and new recruit Cal O’Hare (14) couldn’t break through the Bloods. It took some lateorder hitting from Matt Goodwright (25no) to push Buckley Ridges to a defendable tally. But the Ridges were no match for former Sri Lankan Test batsman Michael Vandort (60), who flayed all and sundry onto Pultney Street and the creek. His early smack about was cut short, but Craig Berger (20no) made sure the runs were put on the board with three overs remaining. The Bloods host Hallam Kalora Park while Buckley Ridges heads to Dandenong West. PARKFIELD v NARRE WARREN In a nail-biter, Parkfield (5/189) managed to hold off Narre Warren (9/185) in the first thriller of the season. Joe Barrett (69) and captain Shane Bell (40) added 100 for the second scalp and were supported down the order by Travis D’Souza (50no). Kaushalya Weeraratne (3/44) was the best of the Magpies bowlers before the batting order almost swooped on the target. Stuart Plunkett (80) added a half-century to his impressive pile of runs purloined from around the country and beyond as he’s played in Tasmania, North Territory and further flung regions. With support via Atishsinh Chouhan (29) and Weeraratne (28) the trio nearly picked up the first win of the year, but Plunkett’s early dismissal derailed the attack. Hemantha Jayasundera (4/16) spun circles around the Magpies middle order to take the clash. Parkfield faces Cranbourne while Narre is hosting Heinz. HALLAM KALORA PARK v MORDIALLOC The reigning premiers Mordialloc (155) were upset by Hallam Kalora Park (7/156) and its new faces at Hallam Reserve. Chris Pereira (0/32) held down an end while Will Whyte (3/35) Cory Booth (2/18) and Leigh Booth (2/27) started extracting scalps. The response was led by Jordan Hammond (42) as the Hawks claimed its first victory of 2015/’16. Hallam heads to Springvale South this round while Mordialloc battles Berwick. Three innings, three 50s. It’s been an impressive start to the Premier season for Casey opener James Seymour. 145446 Picture: JARROD POTTER

“The batting has been really good – the top two Seymour and Suriaratchie have given us a great start to the game,” Sperling said. “They’re going really well – setting the platform for us, but yesterday the middle order couldn’t carry it on. “We were none for 160 and were looking towards 250 and 260 but they (Dandenong) pegged us back well and we couldn’t carry on from what they did and something we’ve got to improve.” The Swans take on FrankstonPeninsula at home this weekend, for yet another one-dayer and Sperling be-

lieves if the whole side clicks together the results will come. “Fair chunk (of one-dayers) to start the season and hopefully we can carry on from what the openers have done and get some wickets as well to bowl teams out,” Sperling said. Dandenong’s first match of the weekend was nowhere near as successful as its second, downed on Saturday by Prahran – with the visiting Panthers unable to chase down 167. James Nanopoulos (3/22) and James Wilcock (3/32) were the best of the Dandy bowlers while Donnell (32) led the way with the blade.

McCalman steadies the ship By RUSSELL BENNETT WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION A BRILLIANT undefeated 87 from Merinda Park opener Daniel McCalman steered his side home with less than two overs to spare against Upper Beaconsfield in WGCA Premier grade action on Saturday. The under-rated, elegant stroke maker was stellar at the top of the innings in the Cobras’ chase (3/160 chasing 5/158 cc), particularly given the loss of two early wickets – both with the score on 25. He combined with Paul Filippone (31) for a 69-run stand that took the Cobras from a precarious 2/25 to 3/94 and well on the way to victory. Merinda Park skipper Danny Diwell has long been a big wrap for McCalman’s ability and he tipped him to be a real player to watch in season 2015/16. There’s more responsibility on his shoulders after the departure of allrounder Jess Mathers, but he looks ready to shoulder more of the load. The Maroons, despite their first-up loss, have plenty to be positive about moving forward. Matt Hutson slotted back in to the top order and top-scored with 41, while Rob North (33), Bathiya Perera (27 not out) and Julian Bayard (22) all got starts – along with prodigiously talented youngster Jack McHale (14), who opened the innings with North. Emerald, meanwhile, made an impressive start to their season against the newly-promoted Cranbourne Meadows, chasing down their 9/147 with 14 overs to spare. The Bombers won the toss and sent the Rebels in – giving Premier fans an early glimpse at a new-look bowling attack without the likes of Alex Cann and Darcy Hellriegel. But Clinton Marsh (2/25), Trent Rolfs (2/23), Ian Litterbach (2/15) and skipper AJ Walker (2/44) combined for a strong all-around performance with the ball. All-rounder Shameera Weerasinghe crossed to the Rebels from Beaconsfield in the off-season and had an immediate impact in round one, top-scoring with 42. Emerald lost opener Litterbach without scoring early in their chase, but Dave McDonald (21) and star import Hashan Goonetilleke (54) then combined for a 97-run stand. Walker (25 not out) and Jason Burns (16) then got the Bombers well and truly within reach of victory. In other results from across the WGCA, Premier champions Kooweerup brilliantly defended just 180 against Tooradin (177); Devon Meadows (7/243) impressed with the bat in its first game of the District season, proving too much for Clyde (217); and Tooradin (5/248) stormed to victory in Sub-District over league newcomers Kalgidhar (5/243) after a lightning century from skipper and club president Kane Latham.

Toothless take bite By KATIE HARRIS WARM and pleasant conditions but dark threatening skies setting down on the final round of the 2015 Victorian HPV Series at Casey Fields. A record breaking number of 128 teams took to the track, making the event the largest in Victoria on a single track for a HPV race. Community Class and the series win was taken out by Full Tilt from Relentless Racing on 127 laps, second place getters Whipstick from Wattle Racing finishing on 120 laps, and third place getters only one lap behind were HP15 from HPRACING. With only two entrants, it was Toothless from Wattle Racing finishing on 127 laps taking out the series win, overall win and category Community Elite Class ahead of second placegetters Trisled 1 from Trisled on 123 laps. With only one entrant in the Community Female class and a trial category for the final round of the series it was Out of Your League from Wattle Racing finishing on 107 laps and gaining an impressive 12th overall. The boys from SMS/BGS proved too strong with their team PerZeus in the Open Secondary Class finishing strongly on 115 laps ahead of second place getters Asphalt Melter on 103 laps and third place getters Velocipede from Victory Christian College finishing on 99 laps. Series winners was awarded to Asphalt Melter from Woodleigh College.

As congested as the Monash Freeway – but at least moving quickly – the battle at Casey Fields Criterium on Saturday was frenetic in the Victorian HPV Series finale. 145445 Picture: JARROD POTTER With one of the strongest fields and eight entrants in the Open Female class, the girls in Wattle Racing with team She’s The Man raced hard against the girls from SMS/ BGS with team Pegasus and finished ahead snatching the win on 101 laps and breaking the 19th consecutive race wins for the SMS/ BGS team, an incredible feat by the Wattle riders. Third place went to Spudz from Frankston High School on 87 laps. Series winners were taken out by Gremlins from EDEC. Community Solo was represented by a select four entrants who took on the challenge of riding six hours solo and what an impressive ride they all made. However, it was Alex Holden who took out the win on 108 laps putting him only 20 laps behind the overall race leaders from Wattle Racing.

Second place getter Jeff Neilsen finished on 99 laps, third place Tim Marquardt close behind on 97 laps and fourth place Ben Goodall on 43 laps. With an impressive 52 entrants across the Junior Secondary Class, it was a battle for first place with only seven laps separating the top four teams. Overtakers from Frankston Primary School took out the round win on 97 laps, only a lap ahead of second place getters and series winners* Miss Janey from Maiden Gully Primary School finishing on 96 laps. Third place getters were Vortex from Victory Christian College and only four laps behind were fourth place getters Velocity from White Hills Primary School. In the Middle Secondary College class it was a close battle between Infusion from Girton Grammar School finishing on 92 laps and

finishing on the same lap was team Taurus from St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School. Third place went to Gremlins Too from EDEC HPV Team finishing on 85 laps and taking out the series for the category. Intrepid from Girton Grammar School in the Senior Secondary Class proved too strong and finished on 110 laps and ahead of second place getters Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies from EDEC HPV Team which finished on 103 laps, third place getters went to Highview One from Highview College on 100 laps. However, it was the Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies took the series win by only one point ahead of Intrepid. What a year of racing from both teams! “I would like to thank all the teams for attending the final round of the 2015 Victorian HPV Series at Casey Fields,” Casey Cardinia HPV and Cycling Club president Nathan Boon said. “It was a great test for organisers as it was the first time we ever had over 100 teams being represented on our track. “We are excited for the continuing future development and expansion of this event in years to come.” Dates for the 2016 Victorian HPV Series are still in talks and will be released in due course. Audi is fit for the fight AUDI and its two prestigious German rivals are locked in serious sales combat in the midsize SUV crossover market. Audi’s Q3 recently received a midlife makeover to increase its fitness for the fight. Though normally used only on sealed roads, the Q3 has reasonable ground clearance that enables it to handle mild off-road driving conditions. Part of this revamp is the use of electronic stabilisation control that can be set up in two stages. The ESC off-road mode adjusts ABS and the electronic differential lock. Audi Q3 maintains the almost coupe profile that has come to characterise many modern crossover SUVs. Those looking for a big load-lugging station wagon should probably shop elsewhere. The single-frame radiator grille and wraparound tailgate follows the very successful theme Audi has been using in its range for some time. This facelift sees redesigned headlights that are now xenon plus for added illumination. If that’s not enough optional LED headlamps can be selected. These work in combination with

Audi Q3 is getting on in years but the latest front-end freshen up and tail tuck comes up nicely. dynamic turn signals which are also integrated into the restyled LED taillights. Over the years Audi has become famed for its high quality interiors and the Q3 is a premium product that’s a real pleasure to travel in. Our test car was fitted with the 2.0-litre TFSI turbo-petrol engine producing 132 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. It can run from rest to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. The 1.4-litre TFSI engine in the Q3 entry-level model now uses Audi’s Cylinder on Demand (CoD) technology to reduce fuel use and emissions. With two of the four cylinders

shutdown under light throttle loads, Audi says that fuel saving is up to 20 per cent. The 2.0-litre110 kW turbo-diesel is the entry-level quattro model in the new Q3 range, with 340 Nm of torque generated from 1750 to 2800rpm. There’s also a 2.0-litre that produces 135 kW and 380 Nm. The Q3 1.4 TFSI has a six-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and drives the front wheels. Other Audi Q3 models have the benefit of seven-speed S tronic and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system. At the top of the infotainment range is MMI navigation plus with

rotary pushbutton and 7.0-inch monitor displaying graphics and navigation map in 2D or 3D. The Bose surround sound in our test Q3 had a 10-channel, 465-Watt amplifier driving 14 speakers, including a subwoofer. Cleverly, it uses a microphone to analyse intrusive noises and adjusts playback accordingly. Brilliant sound can be enjoyed to the full. The Audi Q3 achieves the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating. There is a range of advanced driver assistance systems to help avoid a crash; side assist, active lane assist, high-beam assist and hill descent control, along with electric folding and dimming exterior mirrors. Some of these items aren’t standard on all models. The engine is a delight to sit behind, very responsive after the expected few moments of turbo lag and willing to charge past vehicles being overtaken with a minimum of time on the wrong side of the road. As is the way with most older dual-clutch autos the Audi unit can be hesitant and irritating at very low speeds. Once up and running it’s fine. ALL NEW BT-50 HAS ARRIVED

WITH the clock ticking down towards the end of local production Holden has released the Series II version of its VF Commodore. Because the nameplate is set to continue as an import after the factory closes in 2017 Holden is aware of the importance of keeping Commodore up to date and so hasn’t ruled out another update sometime in 2016. However it’s safe to say that this will be the final major change to the car that has been such a feature of the Australian automotive industry for the past 37 years and one that was our nation’s top-selling car for 15 straight years between 1996 and 2010. With sales of the sportier Commodore variants (SV6, SS, SSV and SSV Redline) now approaching 60 per cent of total sales, it’s clear that Holden is looking to say farewell to its iconic range in style. The biggest change with the Series II VF is the addition of the latest version of the Chevrolet LS3 6.2-litre V8 engine. With 304 kW and 570 Nm it has significantly more power and torque than the 6.0-litre (270 kW / 530 Nm) Gen 4 V8 in the Series I VF. Indeed, it is the most powerful non-HSV Commodore engine ever produced. It’s also the fastest Commodore sprinter yet, capable of go-

Fuel consumption from the flagship SSV Redline is listed at 11.8 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle. We’ll provide our own test numbers, including a city / highway split, when we carry out our week-long test. CO2 emissions are shown at 292 grams per kilometre. The heavily revised V8 is supported by upgraded FE3 rear sports suspension aimed at improving ride comfort without affecting handling. The range-topping SSV Redline also comes with Brembo brakes front and rear. While performance is paramount for owners of V8-powered cars, the sounds that they emit run a close second. With the characteristic guttural growl steadily declining as modern engines become more

refined it’s become necessary for engineers to intervene. Enter a bi-modal exhaust system and a mechanical sound enhancer. To arrange a test drive contact Barry Bourke Holden, 755 Princes Highway, Berwick, on 9707 2222, or Cranbourne Holden, 217A South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne, on 5995 4555.
