The Zonta Club of Noosa joined forces at the Safer Families, Better Communities day on Sunday 11 October to say no to domestic violence.
Arrest as Noosa hits streets in protest By JOLENE OGLE LESS than 48 hours after the Noosa community gathered at Lions Park Noosaville to say no to domestic violence, a local man armed with a knife has been arrested over “very serious” threats to his partner. Police said a 32-year-old man was arrested at a store in Noosaville about 4am on Tuesday 13 October after he threatened his 29-year-old partner while she was working. Police will allege the man sent over 90 text messages and tried to call the woman four times before turning up at her place of work and breaking down a grill to try and get to her. Police said the man made “very serious” threats against her and had the potential to carry them out.
While the woman hid in the store, the man fled the scene, but the dog squad tracked him down before he was arrested and taken to the Maroochydore Watch House. The man is expected to be charged with assault, damaging property, possessing a knife, breaching bail conditions and contravening a domestic violence order. Noosa Heads officer-incharge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said his team were currently attending about one domestic violence incident per day throughout the Noosa region. “In the 24-hour period from Monday to Tuesday, we attended two DV incidents,” he said. For more on the day of action against domestic violence, turn to page 5.
Stockwell in race THE local government election race is heating up, with long-time local and Noosa Shire Residents and Ratepayers Association President Brian Stockwell announcing his candidacy as a councillor for the 2016 elections. Mr Stockwell said he was announcing early so he could spend the next three months listening to the community through “coffee cup consultation”.
8 WEEK BODY CHALLENGE
Mr Stockwell plans to travel throughout the shire and meet with residents to hear their concerns. “I hope to sit around a table with small groups of people to identify what the important issues are for them,” he said. “Whether people want to get a few friends around the kitchen table, meet at a local coffee shop, or invite me to their group’s meeting, I am happy to come along and listen to their concerns and aspirations for the future.
“The issues at Peregian Beach are different to those at Pomona, and if I want to represent the whole of the Noosa Shire I need to understand what people want to protect and what they would like to see changed; both on the coast and in the country.” Mr Stockwell has recently been the head of a local movement to address issues with the management of the Noosa River and said he has been actively lobbying the government for a more integrated approach to achieve a better balance between recreation,
fisheries and the environment since the late ‘90s. With the recent announcement that Councillor Tony Wellington will be running for mayor, together with Noosa Mayor Noel Playford and Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot’s pending retirement, Mr Stockwell says he believes there is a need for new councillors who have local government experience and a strong commitment Brian Stockwell has announced to Noosa values. he will run in the 2016 local Continued on Page 3 government elections.

Plans for food and wine By JOLENE OGLE MORE details have been revealed about Noosa’s newest food and wine festival planned for May next year at the CCIQ Noosa meeting on Tuesday (13 October). Earlier this month Tourism Noosa announced the Sheraton Noosa Resort and Spa had won the bid for sponsorship from the tourism body to hold a culinary event. At the meeting, Sheraton Noosa Resort and Spa general manager Stephen Ferrigno said the decision to apply for the marketing support from Tourism Noosa was made during the Noosa Jazz Festival
Long Lunch held on 4 September. Mr Ferrigno said the Sheraton applied to Tourism Noosa for marketing support rather than funding due to the organisation’s reputation for marketing the local tourism region successfully. “They punch above their weight, he said. In a candid question and answer session with CCIQ Noosa members, Mr Ferrigno said the owners were hoping to run a commercially successful event. “The owners’ intent and desire is commercial. It is for profit. They’re there to make money, he said.
“I make no bones about that ... but they do have a benevolent view that a healthy street, a healthy Sheraton is helping their community. As one of the biggest employers outside of council, Mr Ferrigno said the owners felt a need to stand up and be counted in the community. While no definite program or plan was revealed at the meeting, Mr Ferrigno did confirm the culinary festival would be family focused and include local businesses, with an application made to council to hold the event from 19-22 May next year.
Mr Ferrigno said over the next six weeks the organisation committee plans to have a program of events ready, a website established and to be able to reveal their plans to the community. “Between now and then there is a hell of a lot of ground to cover, he said. “But I’m excited by what we’ve got available to us. I am confident because of the support. "There are too many people saying this is going to work and that it’s good for the community. With that behind us I can’t see how we’re going to fail.
Mind game maestros ture team also awarded Honours and the Maths Engineering team coming first. Mathamatics head Steve Miller-Metzner said the hard work and dedication of the students had paid off. “They’ve really been rewarded for their dedication and determination," he said. “I have no doubt that this young team will commit to giving their very best as it’s been a big thrill for them to be part of continuing the legacy of success in TOM that Good Shepherd has established over many years. TOM is a non-profit organisation that has been running challenges for students with a passion for learning and problem solving
Winners: Ben Rostron, Alex Winn, Rhiannon Ward, Tahli Roche, Gemma Sampson and Bailey Tobin. for over 25 years. “The enthusiasm, hard work and creativity shown by the students, especially when complemented with collaborative teamwork, is fantastic to witness and no doubt provides the keys for
Stockwell in the race From Page 1 IN a statement released to the media on Tuesday morning, Mr Stockwell said he offered the community 30 years of local and state government experience as a planner and catchment ecologist, having held senior positions in government including the role of Director for the Sunshine Coast Region for the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation and State Development Infrastructure and Planning. Mr Stockwell said the
biggest challenge for the next Council will be to undertake a major review of the Noosa Plan to meet the requirements of the new planning legislation. “I believe I can bring a commitment to a community driven approach, which aims to maintain our high levels of environmental protection, while providing sufficient flexibility to attract new business to Noosa as well as job and recreational opportunities for our youth, he said. Mr Stockwell said stand-
ing for council had always been on the “long-term plan since deciding not to stand for a second term in 1991 in order to start a family and pursue a career. “I’ve never lost my passion for thinking globally but acting locally, and believe I can bring a diverse range of skills and experience to the table, he said. “The time is right, and I hope to have the privilege of working with the community to keep Noosa at the top of the Sunshine Coast and an inspiration for coastal communities globally.
success, said Mr Anthony Dyer, principal Good Shepherd Lutheran College. “This is an awesome result and the whole college is just so proud of everyone involved.
Zoo welcomes baby rhino AUSTRALIA Zoo has welcomed another baby rhinoceros born at 6am on Sunday 11 October. Proud mum Caballe welcomed the precious male calf as the fourth rhino baby born at the zoo in four years. After a labour that lasted only two hours, both Caballe and her new baby were doing well and will be taking some time out to bond behind the scenes before joining the rest of the zoo’s ever-growing rhino family. With a rhino gestation period totalling 17 months, this long-awaited birth signifies a successful rhino breeding program at Australia Zoo, helping to highlight the plight of rhinos in the wild. Australia Zoo’s head keeper for ‘Africa’ Manu Ludden was elated by the birth of this newest addition. “We are so happy to announce the birth of another healthy baby rhinoceros. The calf weighs approximately 45kg and is doing extremely well. He’s big and strong and is already suckling very well, she said. “Caballe is an amazing mother, she’s very attentive and protective of her new baby boy. Australia Zoo will keep the public updated on when the little one can be seen on at the African Savannah via their website and Facebook page.

Rally aims for home safety COMMUNITY members, Noosa Council and local groups all came together on Sunday to say no to domestic violence in our community as part of the state-wide day of action. The council staged a Safer Families, Better Communities day at Lions Park, Noosaville, on Sunday to bring together the community as well as showcase local services and organisations available in Noosa. Noosa mayor Noel Playford said in the last year alone there were more than 2000
reported cases of domestic violence across the Sunshine Coast, Gympie and Noosa region, with many more going unreported. Cr Playford said even one case was too many and “cowardly” acts of domestic violence had no place in our homes. On the day, the Zonta Club of Noosa, St Vincent de Paul's, the Salvation Army, the Sunshine Coast Rainbow Network and many more community organisations were on hand to speak with the community
and share information on their services. Throughout the event community members were urged to add their hand print to a statement board that will tour Noosaville and Cooroy library branches as an enduring reminder that Noosa says no to domestic violence. If you are concerned about the welfare or safety of yourself, a friend or family member call the DVConnect hotline on 1800 811 811 or phone 000 if you are in immediate danger.
Noosa MP Glen Elmes, pictured with Noosa mayor Noel Playford, thanked Noosa Council for staging the event.

By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA Council is calling on locals to have their say on the management of flying fox colonies in Wallace Park, with council due to release the management plan for public consultation this week. The Wallace Park Flying Fox management plan was presented to councillors at the planning and organisation committee meeting on Tuesday 13 October, along with a report reviewing various management options. The report said Ecosure Consulting were engaged to develop the draft plan and throughout their investigations spoke with park neighbours including the Noosa Parks Association and the Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club. Council’s principal environment officer Peter Milne said the best option for consideration in the management of flying foxes was the list of mitigation measures outlined in the report. The mitigation measures include pruning and removing flying fox food trees, using protective covers and double glazed windows, plus creating buffer zones through vegetation removal and using deterrents such as sprinklers.
“I think one of the deterrents that is worthy of investigation is the use of sprinklers,” Mr Milne said. “Flying foxes are very temperature sensitive so if we can try and separate them from residential areas that may be a benefit.” Mr Milne said the method wasn’t proven but was worthy of investigation, as dispersal hadn’t worked in the past. Ecosure made eight recommendations to council which include neighbours to the Wallace Park precinct taking management actions such as covering vehicles, structures and clothes lines. An education program, along with interpretive signage, buffer management, deterrents such as wire netting and the re-establishment of the Goat Island roost through limiting disturbance around the island, were also among the recommendations put to council. The community will now be invited to comment on the draft plan over a three-week consultation period through the Noosa Council Your Say portal, as well as through a local letterbox drop and a copy of the draft plan will be available at the Noosa library. Rally backs same sex By JOLENE OGLE FAMILIES, entertainers and supporters will join the LGBTIQ community at Noosa’s Lion’s Park on 24 October, in support of marriage equality at a free, family friendly rally. Event organiser Robin Bristow said it was time to make some noise about marriage equality. “We’ve been let down in Noosa by our local representatives and we can’t let this important issue be forgotten,” he said. “Our message will be particularly aimed at our local Federal Member and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, who has consistently fought against same-sex marriage declaring, ‘it has nothing to do with equality’.” In the wake of Mental Health Week, Mr Bristow said politicians and the community needed to recognise LGBTIQ people face particular mental health issues as a result of discrimination, homophobia and isolation. “LGBTI young people have up to six times the rate of suicide attempts as their heterosexual peers,” he said. Special guest speakers for the event will include representatives
from The Greens, Labor and the Australian Sex Party, plus Noosa councillor Frank Wilkie who said healthy communities were inclusive communities. “Amending the Marriage Act may be a decision for Federal politicians, but there’s a lot we can do to ensure Noosa remains a place where everyone is appreciated and valued for who they are regardless of religion, sexuality, age or race,” he said. The national spokesperson for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Shelley Argent will also speak on the day. “At present, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) community is one of the last minority groups in Australia that lives with discrimination, inequality and injustice,” Ms Argent said. “Several other first world countries have recognised the need to grant same sex couples their human rights and Australia federally in late 2008 removed the economic discrimination, but there is still more work to be done to gain total equality.” All people from across the Coast are invited to show their support for the LGBTI community, and participate in a fun day of

Entertainment will be provided by the Meerkat duo and the Alan Casey Blue Dog Bush Band, as well as Melony Brests. There will be a prize for the best dressed pooch and funds will
also be raised for SHOUT of headspace with a gold coin raffle for fantastic prizes. The Noosa Spring Carnival and Marriage Equality Rally will be held on Saturday 24 October from noon to 3pm at the Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville.

PLANS for the Sunshine Butterflies’ hobby farm in Cooroibah have taken flight this week with the delivery of an ex-army shed valued at $60,000. The 25m shed was surplus from the Vietnam War effort, having never been sent to the frontline but instead stored at the Wallangarra depot. The shed was delivered flat-packed to Sunshine Butterflies’ new property at Cooroibah and will be used as the main activity shed. Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh said the donation of the shed from the Australian Defence Force was a wonderful addition to the organisation’s plans to build a hobby farm that would offer animal therapy along with the group’s already successful art and music programs for children with disabilities. The shed is yet to be constructed, but director of Russell Green Strategic and former Councillor Russell Green has donated his time and skills to help Sunshine Butterflies apply for planning approval through Noosa Council. Mr Green said the application was far from simple with a host of paperwork to be

It is simply the right thing to do. What they do is wonderful.” Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss applied for the shed donation on behalf of Sunshine Butterflies and said the organisation should be com-
mended for their work in helping people shine through ability. “Your new program at Cooroibah will build on your achievements and this donation is fitting recognition of the tireless work carried out by your volunteers to provide this much appreciated community service,” he said. Sunshine Butterflies also received over $30,000 in funding as part of the latest round of grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes announced the groups to benefit from the funds last week, with the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club scoring over $28,000 in funding, the Eumundi District Swim Club has been awarded over $12,000, while the Noosa Navy Cadets will benefit from over $34,000 in funding. Ms Walsh said the organisation had been desperate for extra funds to start construction at the property. “We need the funding to build sheds to move all existing and new programs to, as well as our office and therapy room,” she said. “With the help of the grant, we will be able to complete two new sheds making us one step closer to completion and reaching our vision of ‘our backyard’ hobby farm.”

RON LANE
FOR Steve and Nikki Mawby of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, 8am Saturday 27 May 2013 is a date that will live in their minds forever. It was on this day the first ever sessions for the newly formed Noosa Seahorse Nippers, a Nipper club to help children with special needs, took to the sands of Noosa's Main Beach. For the Mawbys this was indeed their brainchild. The success of such a project would be something in which not only they, but their club, community and indeed the state of Queensland, could take great pride. At about 4.30pm on the previous afternoon Steve chaired the first ever meeting of what was to become known as the Noosa Seahorse Nippers; and in doing so welcomed lifesavers, visitors and helpers and briefed them on the aims of the group and what lay ahead. Steve said the Seahorse Nippers program was based on Pambula Surf Club members Michele and Peter Bootes’ concept. Their reason for doing so, was that they themselves were parents of a child with special needs and after starting with just five children, built the program up to include 19 participants. “We held our first ever beach session in January 2000,” Michele said. “Initially our aim was to provide a modified beach/surf program for children who due to their problems could not pass the required pool swim.” For Steve it all started back in 1979 when he joined the North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club in Sydney and obtained his bronze medallion. Afterwards, Steve became heavily involved in surf sports with his main discipline being ski paddling and after marrying at Cronulla in 1988, Steve and Nikki shifted south to Thredbo in 1990. On the weekends they would travel to Pambula Beach SLSC where Steve was then a patrolling member. It was during this time that Steve and Nikki had their first ever look at lifesavers caring for special children; the project instigated by their clubmates Michele and Peter Bootes; and it was something the Mawbys were to remember. In 2003 the Mawbys made the big move. With their two daughters Abbey and Kahla in tow they shifted to the Sunshine Coast and on arrival joined the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club; their daughters followed along with mum and dad by joining the Peregian Nippers. In 2005 Steve transferred to the Noosa Club. On joining Noosa Steve continued to compete in ski events at local carnivals as well as fulfill his obligations as a patrolling member. From 2006 to 2010 they kept busy spending their summer months running their ski lodge in
Niseko, Japan. However June 2012 saw Steve move up the ladder and become fully obligated to the Noosa Club when he was appointed to the position of Finance Officer on the management committee. All during this time the desire to help children in need still burned fiercely within the Mawbys. So it was that after months of research and planning with the relevant people, Steve presented a full and very comprehensive report to the management committee of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club. They gave it total support; it was time to move. On the evening of 26 May at the inaugural meeting, perhaps the most relevant statement came when the meeting was told, “Remember that these teenagers will have exactly the same feelings as regular teenagers, so be careful how you pair them up. Watch for body language as this is often the first sign of stress. Keep instructions short and simple and above all be patient.” Further to this Steve explained what the program would include. Events such as warm-up runs, stretching, beach flags (modified), ball games, wading races, body surfing, soft rescue boards and on calm days kayaking. All this he explained would be governed by weather conditions with qualified lifesavers supervising their every move. All activities, the workers were told would be a ratio of one on one, lifesaver to child. However in the case of a wheelchair the ratio would increase to three to one. On looking back over the years the Mawbys' first meeting which was well attended and well briefed, was the launching pad that was to make this incredible project the success it is today. It was obvious that the three components necessary for total success would be; a big workforce, family support and above, all happy children. Happily, all three evolved. Regarding the outcome both Steve and Nikki agree: “What we have achieved is due largely to the massive support from people such as; Seahorse parents, young lifesavers from various clubs and organisations such as Fire and Rescue, the Floral Shirts, the Surf Club, Noosa Council and all aspects of media. “Council's support regarding the car park was incredible and the work of the lifesavers in the car park was massive. Regarding people, Dawn Fraser has been incredible and her rapport with the children has been great; also Jordan Mercer, another favorite with the kids.” Of late another factor has come to Steve and Nikki's attention regarding the children - Smart Pups. With this new, “and expensive” factor being addressed, plus the massive spread of the Seahorse concept both local and interstate, it is easy to see why these two quite achievers have gained both the support and the respect of all with whom they come in contact. Proud to say, they're Our People.

Cowboys’ win goes down in history - with Jimmy Benny’s
beat BENNY PIKE
THERE’S no doubt that Rugby League was the winner on the day, after the enthralling 17-16 Cowboys victory over the Broncos in the NRL decider. Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel had the punters at fever pitch 20 minutes before kick off, and really the rest is now history - with smarter people than me calling it the best ever Grand Final, and that’s a big call. Two things will happen in the future, Jonathan Thurston once retired will be inducted into the Immortal’s alongside Lewis, Gasiner, Fulton, Langlands and Beetson, and North
Queensland will get a new super stadium. I had the pleasure of being involved when the Cowboys first galloped onto the scene in 1995. I was there when Cowboys CEO and legend Kerry Boustead turned the first sod at the harness racing track at Kerwin. That was the day the dream started, and wasn’t to win a Grand Final, more so it was to give local players the chance to play in the big time without leaving home. Everything was going as planned, maybe not winning, but local boys were having a go, and fans got to see their heroes. Sadly, the Super League waved its magic wand and Cowboys officials made two mistakes - first, sacking Bowie, and second trying to buy a premiership by bringing in outsiders and saying bye to the local players. As expected, the crowds dropped and it

wasn’t until locals like Matt Bowen got a jersey that the interest started to draw the support back. Noosa local Ian Guthrie was also heavily involved from the start, as the marketing manager. He and his team put in place some terrific concepts to promote the players into the community. For the first time, most of the team was being seen visiting schools, hospitals and helping at charity functions and fund-raisers. I suppose Ian’s only problem was that none of the early players had the profile that Thurston and others now receive. I am sure the calls would have been requesting Alfie, Wally, Renouf who were the stars of that era. Also in the that early stage, not every North Queenslander was a Cowboys fan with many long-time ARL Club supporters. I congratulate the initiative of taking the
NRL Trophy out to the wider areas, it wasn’t that long ago when the Foley Shield was the pride of the north. While we are congratulating success, its was terrific to see Sunrise Beach developer Norm Provan inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame. Provan led his beloved St George Dragons to 11 premierships during the 1950s and ’60s. He also donned the Green and Gold jumper 14 times, contested two World Cups and played 256 first grade games. Hall of Fame chairman Robert De Castella said: "Norm’s achievements on and off the field ensure he will forever hold a special place in Australia’s sporting history". Mr Provan joins fellow Noosaites Dawn Fraser and Evonne Cawley, surely he must be the next League Immortal. Until next time. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Drysdale Funerals funeral arranger and conductor Samantha McKiernan has donated her wedding dress to be made into beautiful gowns as part of Angel Gowns' great work.
Angels’ gowns are heaven sent for some THE death of a newborn baby is a tragic time for any family but local volunteers and funeral homes are working hard to help ease the pain. Angel Gowns Australia is a community organisation of volunteers who lovingly hand craft gowns and tutus from donated wedding dresses which are then donated to families, funeral homes and hospitals around the country. Drysdale Funerals Tewantin location manager Christine Sterlson said the loss of a newborn baby can be exceptionally hard but Angel Gowns can help. “Angel Gowns bring the gowns to us and families can pick out which one they would like and we can
dress their little loved one for their final journey,” she said. As a registered not-forprofit charity run by volunteers, Angel Gowns relies heavily on the community for financial support and the donation of materials. Ms Sterlson said Drysdale Funerals will happily accept any donations of ribbons, beads and sewing materials on behalf of the group, as well as wedding dresses. Anyone who would like to donate craft items to the charity or an old wedding dress can drop them off at Drysdale Funerals, Butler Street, Tewantin. Phone 5449 9383 for more information.
Biosphere bosses THE Noosa Community Biosphere Association has a new committee with more than 70 people turning out to the organisation’s first annual general meeting on Thursday 8 October to vote in the new members. NCBA vice-president John Wood said the organisation now had an elected committee from a “diverse background” representing the greater community. Mr Wood said the board was made up of people from corporate to small business backgrounds, finance industry to charities and those concerned with energy efficiency and ecofriendly practices. The eight committee members are Dick Barnes as president, Mr Wood as vice-president, Wayne Langford as treasurer, plus Geoff Acton, Jo Ball, Michael Davis, Chandel Eyre and Darren Walters. Mr Wood said the organisation was mindful of the people element of the biosphere and the group had already started connecting with community groups and councillors. “We have commenced a Ban the Plastic Bag campaign this week targeting our residents and have achieved 315 signatures via change. org,” he said. “This is in line with the Community Jury’s recommendation and NCBA wants to show our support. NCBA wants to send a clear message to council that now is the time to rid the shire of non-biodegradable plastic shopping bags.” Mr Wood said NCBA served as the peak Biosphere body for the Noosa community. LETTERS Art back in business
In loving memory of Claire Exley who was born 1 July 1946 and died on 7 September 2015.
Farewell Claire FRIENDS and family gathered to farewell Claire Exley who passed away from cancer on 7 September this year. Claire, 69, was a long-time volunteer and board member of the Katie Rose Hospice in Doonan and spent the last days of her journey in the hospice she so enjoyed working in. In an interview with Noosa Today in July this year, Claire said it was a pleasure and a privilege to volunteer at the hospice. After working as a midwife and then retiring from medial reception work, Claire said she was attracted to working in palliative care. “It’s amazing,” she said. “Like a labour ward, it’s never dull. The people are amazing.” Claire said she was battling cancer but wasn’t afraid of dying. “I haven’t been afraid of dying since I saw my first dead body at 17,” she said. “Dying, for me, is not a scary thing.” Claire died in the Katie Rose Hospice on 7 September surrounded by friends, family and work colleagues. Katie Rose Hospice president Frank Lewins said Claire was a committed volunteer who believed in the idea of the hospice as a caring environment for those in the end stage of their lives, as well being a support for their families.

SADLY, in this area there are always empty retail shops, some for long periods. There is nothing quite disheartening as a dark, closed business. Well, I have a proposal that is advantageous to everyone. Until recently a group of local artists and artisans were able to display their work at a nice studio on the Wharf. That changed when a new art studio leased the space. I wonder if art and craft groups could take a temporary occupancy in one of the aforementioned empty shops. For a minimal rent, plus the cost of temporary electric service, life would once again be given to an empty, dark, lonely space. It’s a win-win situation. Potential long-term lessees would see the value of the location, the owner would have someone to care for it and give it meaning and for a period of time the art and craft group would have studio space to exhibit its art. This type of situation could, if handled properly, be continuous with the artists and artisans moving from one empty retail shop to another as those spaces found new, permanent tenants. And just like that a new, unique roving art and craft studio is established. Could this be made to happen? Bill Sheehy, Noosaville.
Shining light I WAS so pleased to read of Tony Wellington’s plans to run for Mayor of Noosa. For newer residents and those who may have forgotten, Tony was ‘front line’ in the struggle against the state Labor government which forced Noosa into amalgamation. They were dark days when the prospects of ever seeing an independent Noosa looked extraordinarily remote. Through those many months Tony and others worked diligently and intelligently towards regaining Noosa’s independence. Tony ‘lived and breathed’ the experience of re-creating Noosa. In that time and during his experience with the amalgamated Sunshine Coast Council and our now de-amalgamated Noosa Council, he has engaged with the people of Noosa and has heard from many residents about what Noosa meant to them and what they would like to see for the future. He is a man dedicated to a Noosa that controls its own destiny and is protected from the greedy forces which would force population density, high rise buildings, traffic lights, rampant signage and a ‘growth is good at all costs’ mentality on us. With Tony’s candidacy we have the opportunity to vote for an intelligent, clear thinking mayor who brings transparency and consistency with what has already been achieved under Noel Playford’s administration. He has the communication skills, desire and energy to take Noosa to the next level, not only protecting what is important to us but also facilitating a vision for the future that nurtures current opportunities for growth and creates new ‘compatible with Noosa’ economic opportunities. Do not be lulled in to believing that just because Noosa once again controls its destiny, that its destiny is automatically aligned with what most of Noosa has come to expect. As always, there are forces gathering who would like to challenge the population cap, the high-rise ban, the traffic light ban and so on. Wellington as our new mayor is the only way we can be assured of the future we fought to retain. Greg Reddaway, Noosa.
Waves of despair REGARDING the shocking moment a car swerved towards a dingo on Fraser Island. The speed limit on the beach of Fraser Island must be enforced. It is dangerous for dingoes. In documented autopsy reports, many dingoes and dingo puppies die from vehicle strikes. The maximum speed limit is 80km/h on the beach, 60km/h near townships and 30km/h on inland tracks, so there is no unrestricted driving

on the Island, but it needs more control. It is not just the speeding, even at 60km/h or 80km/h there have been reports of dingoes deliberately targeted by vehicles. Sadly it’s the mentality of some in today’s cruel attitudes to animals. It is also dangerous for any other animals and birds alike not to mention children. Hundreds of migrating bird-life, including the common terns, the oyster-catchers use the beach and are disappearing as they can’t raise a chick because when they take their young down to the beach to feed soon after hatching they are run over by 4WDs. Big ghost crabs are also a thing of the past where they were all once in abundance. The speed limits are set to supposedly protect the dingoes and the birds but this is mostly ignored. This beach should be closed to 4WDs unless driven by the responsible tour operators because it is their livelihood and they respect the rules and protect the wildlife of Fraser Island. Not so the hundreds and thousands of vehicles that damage everything on this pristine beach, now a poor relation of World Heritage, and has the lack of funding. Fraser is famous for the 160km beach but it is driven on by trucks, buses and speeding 4WD vehicles. We must help keep and preserve this now at threat island. The National Parks now have the information of the perpetrator and I hope the person is prosecuted. He is a danger to everything speeding like that. I think it’s high time the beaches are closed to 4WD vehicles, only for the tours guide operators, and not give any more licences for anymore tour vehicles. The unrestricted driving is a huge issue. Extinction is forever, there is no reverse button. Marie-Louise Sarjeant, Eumundi.
Boot in for Wellington NOW that Tony Wellington has signalled his mayoral ambitions, I guess he’d better don the armour. I can hear the likes of Lobb, Nuske, Brennan, Jarvis and their other cronies working themselves into a fury. Bitterness runs deep in parts of this community but, thankfully, those troublemakers are in a minority. Maybe they’ll bring Patricia Peterson back for another shot? Michael Egan, Pomona.
Fighting for us HOW good it is to see Tony Wellington putting his hand up for mayor at the next council elections. Tony has been an outstanding councillor in the first term of the restored Noosa Council. He has never wavered from his commitment to the issues and values that were so resoundingly endorsed by voters two years ago. Tony has stood up for Noosa for many years both during the fight for de-amalgamation and after. He has done the hard yards in helping set Noosa Council on the right path in its first term. He will be an excellent choice as mayor for the second term and will only extend his record as a true believer in Noosa and its values. Lyn McAndrew, Cooran.
Cowboy congratulations I HAVE never felt so proud to be a Queenslander. The way our Cowboys and Broncos played the game of rugby league is a tribute to the game. They play tough but they play fair, no niggling, no wrestling, no sledging but a lot of respect and admiration for each other. At the end of the wonderful final on Sunday, nobody left the ground and there were as many Broncos supporters as Cowboys supporters congratulating the mighty Cowboys on their lap of honour. As a die-hard Broncos supporter, I, like many others, couldn’t be happier for the Cowboys as they truly deserved to win. The Broncos will be back next year better than ever and no doubt our Queensland State of
Origin team will make us proud again. Meanwhile, a well-known drug user from NSW Andrew Johns was caught drunk in a country airport abusing women. Crickey, it is good to be a Queenslander! Dom Massoni, Verrierdale.
Party for politicians POLITICAL parties are a destabilising influence in local government and should not be tolerated by the electors. Shirley Krasnoff, Noosa.
Green embrace NO matter how blue-blooded they and their politics may have been elsewhere, after living here for a few years most new Noosans start to turn into environmentalists of some description or other, realising that to preserve this unique paradise they must protest against rampant development. Newcomers may think the environmental battles have ended. Not so. Look at Lake Weyba, Noosa Civic and the unending appetite of the Property Council of Australia. We have to remain vigilant. Some of us became be proud to be called ‘Greenies’ as we did our little bit for beautiful Noosa. But, unfortunately, we can no longer answer to that nickname due to good old party politics. Gordon Barton brought us the Australia Party, Don Chipp the Australian Democrats, and now we have the Greens. I believe Canberra also has a motoring enthusiast party, a sex party and perhaps an afternoon tea party. Although most of us may be motorists, have indulged in sex and also the occasional afternoon tea, we don’t expect to be mistaken for members of those parties and we don’t want party politics in our council. From now on it’s ‘environmentalist’ - or would you prefer ‘treehugger’? Susie Osmaston, Noosa Heads.
Proper plan for the future I BELIEVE the time has come for the residents of the Noosa council area to have a mature look at the Noosa plan, which has been in place since 2006. The council has in recent times knocked back Masters, The Civic expansion, Cooroy Motor Home Park, and is making it difficult for one of our farmers to extend his poultry business. In addition, the Noosa Junction development of the bowls club land seems to be sitting in limbo. This represents millions of infrastructure dollars that would generate employment opportunities for our 14,800 people aged 24 years and under, and for our unemployed population approximately 3000. The idea that we can attract high value industries such as digital services, medical research, and higher education facilities was touted in 2005-6 when Civic was constructed and opened. Some 10 years on the council, National Parks Association, and the Chamber of Commerce, the latter two seem to have a large influence on the council, have not been able to attract these industries. The council seems to think that the growing population in Perigian Springs and Coolum are a problem rather than an opportunity. I believe that Noosa has four distinct areas. They are: (1) Tewantin, Noosaville, Noosa Heads, Noosa Junction, Sunshine Beach, National Parks, the Lake system, North Shore, this is our tourist areas. (2) Our commercial industrial area of Civic, Bunning’s, Officeworks, Noosa Hospital and medical area, and the motor vehicle precinct. (3) The third hub is Cooroy, Pomona and Boreen Point. Cooroy has a flourishing commercial area and is in a strong position to tap the passing tourist trade travelling to North and South Queensland. (4) Our rural area is a diverse agriculture area. We should be encouraging small, medium and large farmers to expand and prosper. The Noosa plan has too much emphasis on one area of Noosa only, to the detriment of Noosa going forward for the next 20 years. noosa.starcommunity.com.au
LETTERS If properly managed the four areas can expand and attract a diverse number of businesses and people without one area detracting from the others, retaining Noosa’s strong environmental record, giving Noosa a strong economy which will even out the effects of the highs and lows of the Australian economy. To allow Noosa to move forward it needs the current and incoming Noosa Council, in consultation with ratepayers and key community organisations to put together a new Noosa plan that reflects the current reality of Noosa and puts in place a Noosa plan that addresses the strengths of the four Noosa areas and allows us to grow in a sustainable manner that takes us forward to 2026. John Cox, Noosaville.
Hospital emergency THERE’S no doubt that the university hospital which is due to open late next year will be a wonderful acquisition for the Sunshine Coast a state-of-the-art health hub with the full range of medical services that a modern community requires. But buried in the planning detail released this week was a note that, as part of a wholesale change to the provision of health services in the region, Noosa Hospital will be slashed from 92 beds to just 20. This is little better than an outpost servicing one of Australia’s prime tourist destinations which serves a geographically diverse region of 55,000 people and caters to a million visitors a year plus another million day trippers. Furthermore, Noosa has a population of retired people that is not only older than the Queensland average but ageing at a faster rate. Instead of adopting a slash and burn approach to Noosa health services, surely Queensland’s health planners could have adopted a strategy of encouraging the transition of Noosa Hospital to a facility specialising in conditions affecting older Australians while still operating as an emergency facility feeding the new university hospital. The surrounding precinct, which is already evolving as a satellite health hub, could be encouraged to emerge as a fully-fledged centre of excellence for an ageing population. I do not believe the people of Noosa will passively allow their hospital to be wound back to a minor facility, totally inadequate to the realities of a major retirement and tourist destination. I think it’s a question of watch this space there’s going to be some action. Ingrid Jackson, Noosaville.
Noisy minority FIRSTLY I am a forties baby - brought up on Manus Island - we had to take it turns to pedal while listening to the ABC program The Argonauts, we used to enter essay competitions and had to study verses out of the Bible for homework at the mission school I attended, and with no TV or social media had to read, read and read some more and write in long hand. I’ve read the Bible twice, once as kid as once, as an adult, and as an adult, are a third of the way through studying the Koran - I’ve also read the Australian Constitution - I believe it is a better document than the Bible or the Koran. Reply to Fran Bate - I suggest you move to a country with Sharia Law where freedom of speak doesn’t exist - although you shoot yourself in the foot “I know people are entitled to their opinions”. Reply to Sally Platt-Hepworth - I’m studying the Koran because you can’t simply read it and because it was written to be read - your letter sounds more like you are willing to join them than me and I’ll wager you have never read or studied the Koran. I have already publically stated that I’m not standing for council. Been a councillor, read the Bible, read the Australian Constitution and

now the Koran - been there, done that. Reply to G Bright - My so called conspiracy theories and mad paranoia is not a wild rant - it is based on facts and findings - your letter is a wild rant and ill-informed ‘Mate’. I know first-hand about Indonesia’s invasion of Dutch New Guinea (1963, I think) and Timor and more recently the Bali bombings list goes on and on. Reply to Michael Rowbotham - As I have already stated I come from PNG and have friends of Jewish, Muslim, Buddhists and many other persuasions. I have never said “religious beliefs dictate character” you make that statement by default how many scriptures you been able to interrupt. I’m willing to wager you have never read the Bible, Koran or any other scripture for that matter. Can you please show me facts where Buddhists have committed atrocities in South East Asia - of all the religions they are the most peaceful and understanding - mind you after I finish the Koran I want to read their doctrine. In reply to you and Sally, I might intend to join them and become a Buddhist. In reply to Angelika Pawlitscheck, Chris Hindmarsh and Geoff Lewis, thanks for your supporting letters. I guess three out of seven isn’t bad when we all know “the noisy minority make more noise that the silent majority” and that’s a fact. Bob Jarvis, Tewantin.
Carry on as normal I WOULD like to point out the inaccuracy of Jeff Nuske’s letter (Not So Strong, Noosa Today, 8 October) and his ongoing confusion about council’s capital works carry-over. As previously explained (Land of Confusion, Noosa Today, 10 September), council has carried forward budgets for those projects not completed by 30 June 2015 to allow for their completion in the 2015/'16 financial year. The carryover of budgets for incomplete projects is normal practice for local government and work on these projects continues. I hope this explanation dispels Mr Nuske’s lingering confusion. Martin Drydale, Director, Planning and Infrastructure, Noosa Council.
Green seen AS A long-term Greens member and an even longer-term advocate of Green principles, I welcome the decision to select a Greens candidate for the council election next March, which by the way is by no means a precedent. A by-election in the old Division 4 in 2007 saw Frank Wilkie defeat Di Bennett, a Greens candidate, as well as Cate Molloy, former State Member for the ALP. As far as I’m aware, the sky didn’t fall in. No doubt the usual protests will be heard, proclaiming that this will tarnish Noosa’s uncorrupted record of voting for independents, to which I’d say: rubbish. Such objections smack of naivety or deliberate misinformation. In my observation of Noosa councils since the early 1970s, almost every council has had members representing vested interests, in particular real estate agents and developers, or with thinly disguised political allegiances. You need only to look at the voting record of some of our current councillors on sensitive environmental issues, including the supposed eco-resort at Kin Kin - which led to the resignation of Cr Griffin and the 2007 by-election - and the more recent question of sanctioning quad-bike tours in Woondum NP, one of our treasured National Parks, and you will see which of them is really green at heart, whatever they may profess to be the case. Given the dismal record of recent state governments of both political persuasions in protecting both Noosa’s right to independence and, perhaps even more importantly, protecting
LENSCAPE
Thank you to Janelle who shared this photo of her husband Peter and son Kurt who caught this fish using a reel hired from O Boat Hire and frozen prawns as bait. It took 30 minutes of reeling to bring the fish in but both Kurt and Peter were more than happy with their catch, which was released back into the river. If you have a photo of Noosa’s landscape or wildlife, we would love to see it. Send your photo to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au. the wider environment, it would be a very brave candidate for Noosa Council who chose to fly their colours. Check out the respective ALP and LNP positions on CSG mining as well as the proposed Adani Galilee Basin abomination if you’re in any doubt. There are many successful examples of Greens councillors in other states, including the Mayor of Byron Shire, Simon Richardson. If elected, a Greens councillor for Noosa would be accountable not just to the wider electorate, but would be subject to scrutiny and possible disendorsement by the local branch if their decisions while on council departed from established Greens principles. There are no hidden string-pullers or vested interests behind the Greens and their actions can as a rule be accurately determined on a matter of principle alone - can any other political party claim the same? Noel Bird, Boreen Point.
How things change WHILE it is understandable that many Noosa residents wish to keep party politics out of the Noosa Council elections, the reality, as we found with the elections of the Sunshine Coast Council, is that candidates can make promises about protecting the environment, but after being elected, put out the red carpet to developers. The Greens are not opposed to development that is in keeping with the Noosa Plan and appropriate for maintaining the low-rise character of the shire. There is plenty of scope for improving our facilities and providing job opportunities without having the white shoe brigade trampling all over our iconic beauty. The local Greens members have decided that by putting forward a candidate(s) who respects Greens principles, voters will have the assurance that, as a representative, the councillor will stand firmly to ensure that inappropriate development does not happen here. It is worth noting that, unlike both major parties, the Greens do not accept corporate or developer donations. This gives voters a guarantee
that what you see is what you get. Because the Greens are a party of grass roots democracy, contentious issues will be discussed within the branch and consensus reached for giving the Greens councillor advice. Party politics has not been absent from some Noosa councillors in the past, but previously those candidates who were members of a political party did not declare their affiliation. In interstate shires where Greens councillors have been elected they have proven to be sensible, constructive representatives. Giving a mandate to a Greens councillor is a good way of helping to protect the ambience that makes Noosa both a beautiful place to live, and a fabulous place to holiday. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.
Who's ignorant? I AGREE with most of what Bob Jarvis wrote and am concerned at the ignorance shown by many responders to his letter about the objectives of Islam. In my view, Islam is bad news for Australia and the world. Islam hates the West and teaches intolerance to non-believers - us Infidels. Islam will say anything to deceive us and their followers to achieve their objectives. And that is to have all submit to Allah, Mohammad, the Koran and Sharia Law. Islam means submission - or else. Muslims themselves need liberation from Islam. I urge your readers to study the life of Mohammad and make up their own mind whether he sets the perfect example on how to live and behave as Muslims are taught and urged to do. And it would be useful also read about the life of Jesus to understand what our values, beliefs and behaviours are fundamentally based on. We only have to read and see what Islam is doing in the UK, Europe and other Western countries - not to mention the Middle East. Our troubled future is there to see now. There are none so blind as those who refuse to see. Rob Nicholls, Doonan.

Time of renewal SPRINGTIME is the most important time in the growing phase of orchids, according to the Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society. Most of the plants have flowered and are now producing new growths and new roots; this is the ideal time to repot your collection. Orchids that grow are ephytes (grow on trees) hate being grown in pots. The potting media should be replaced every two years as it breaks down and causes the mix to hold too much moisture, which leads to the roots rotting. Also when fertilisers are applied this can cause a build up of harmful salts in the mix. The Noosa club held a terrific show in Cooroy at the end of September. Thank you to all the people who supported the show. It was a resounding success. The Noosa club meets at the Tinbeerwah Hall on the first Saturday of each month from 1pm-4pm. The objective of the club is to share growing ideas and promote friendship with like-minded people. The next meeting will be concentrating on repotting orchids. All visitors are welcome. Property loans surging ahead PROVING the property market remains alive and well, new data has found home loan demand hit a six year high in August. According to the August Housing Finance Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 55,677 home loans were approved over the course of the month up 2.9 per cent on the previous month. Mortgage Choice chief executive officer John Flavell said home loan demand had not been this strong since September 2009. “The last time more than 55,600 home loans were written in one month was back in 2009, when the boosted first home owner grant was in full swing,” Mr Flavell said. “To see a similar level of home loan demand in today’s market, when there is not only no boosted first home buyer incentives in

Over the month of August, the total value of all dwelling commitments written exceeded $34 billion - up 3.5 per cent on the previous month.
“Data from CoreLogic found property prices across the combined capital cities climbed 0.3 per cent over the month of August. As such, it is no real surprise to see the total value of all dwelling commitments on the rise,” Mr Flavell said.
“Since the beginning of the year, the average home loan size for all owner occupied housing commitments has surged seven per cent, hitting $371,200. “Moving forward, it is fair to assume the average home loan size will continue to grow so long as
property prices continue to climb.” Mr Flavell said he also expected home loan demand to remain strong over the coming months, as many lenders were offering some significant incentives to owner occupiers in a bid to win their business.

recorded at $483 per week and they have increased by just 0.3 per cent over the first three quarters of the year while they have risen by 0.5 per cent over the past 12 months.
In a report by CoreLogic RP Data senior analyst Cameron Kusher, the annual rate of change has continued to slow over the month reaching a new historic low of 0.5 per cent.
“The data points to an ongoing softening of rental growth,” he said.
According to Mr Kusher, dwelling rental rates across the combined capital cities are
“The 0.5 per cent rise in rental rates over the past year is the slowest rate of rental growth on record based on data which goes back as far as December 1995.” Mr Kusher said the
construction boom across the capital cities coupled with slowing population growth, low mortgage rates and the heightened level of activity from investors are the major contributing factors to the slowing rental growth. “Three of the cities which have seen the largest ramp up in new housing supply and investor activity over recent years; Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, have continued to record rental rises over the past year however, each city is seeing a slowing in the pace
of rental growth,” he said. “It is clear the increase in investment stock is providing landlords with little scope to lift rental rates while the low mortgage rate environment provides little incentive to push yields higher.” Mr Kusher said data also shows weekly rents have remained unchanged in September, taking the annual pace of rental growth across the combined capital cities to a new record low of 0.5 per cent over the year.
Rental rates across the combined capital cities were unchanged in September but rates fell in most individual capital cities, according to new data.

“They specifically cite the Palaszczuk Government’s new planning legislation along with the SEQ Regional Plan and new State Infrastructure Plan, which are both being developed, as contributors to the confidence boost.” Mr Pitt said there was an exciting pipeline of major developments in Queensland in some of the state’s tourism and population centres. “Work is already underway on

The Australian Body Art Festival comes to Eumundi this weekend from Friday 16 October to Sunday 18 October.
today NOOSA’S LIFESTYLE GUIDE
Colourful body of work THE Australian Body Art Festival promises to be a colourful collaboration of Pop Trashion, body paint and a host of guest artists. The three-day festival kicks off this Friday 16 October and will include a program full of workshops, competitions, exhibitions, and a Saturday night arts jam in the style of the Warhol Factory. The Australian Body Art Festival centres on a unique artistic expression using the body as its three-dimensional canvas with applications ranging from face painting to special effects, airbrushing and wearable art. Visitors and artists will witness body art in surprising new ways and can get hands-on at workshops, showcase their creativity in competitions or simply be spectators and embrace the fusion of fashion, art and culture across the weekend. Relaunched this year, the festival will focus on combining art with fashion in this year’s theme of Pop Trashion; a cool melding of the New Warhol movement with enviro fashion style. Highlights of the three-day program include an appearance from renowned body artist Emma Hack who painted Gotye and Kimbra in the famous Somebody That I Used to Know film clip, the Saturday night Lost Movements Arts Jam and the myriad of body art shows throughout the weekend. The Australian Body Art Festival will be held at the Eumundi Amphitheatre from Friday 16 October with a host of workshops to kick start the 2015 festival, with the main events to be held on Saturday and Sunday. Walk the Line at the Tewantin Noosa RSL on Saturday 17 October with the music theatre show, “I Hear That Train a-Comin’: The Johnny Cash Story”.
Music of the Man in Black COUNTRY superstar Johnny Cash was a music industry legend for over half a century, with an instantly recognisable voice and style. The hit movie “I Walk the Line” introduced his dramatic life story and his unmistakeable, tough music to a younger generation of music lovers. Vocalist and writer Barry Ferrier has brought together a team of talented performers to create an immersive music theatre show, “I Hear That Train a-Comin’: The Johnny Cash Story”. Featuring the contrasting voices of Barry “Dr Baz” Ferrier and vivacious songstress Ilona Harker, this great show is a musical tribute to Man in Black, his epic life story and his love affair with partner June Carter, threaded through with a tongue in cheek look at Johnny Cash’s wild side and their stormy relationship. The vivacious and versatile Ilona Harker plays the three women in Johnny’s life, his
“Mama” Carrie, first wife Vivienne and June Carter Cash. With authentic rockabilly she ‘hoots and hollers’ her way through this toetapping, side slapping mix of great songs and stories. The show captures Johnny looking back on his rise from humble conditions as a child on a poor cotton farm soaking up gospel and country music, to tough times on work gangs, enlistment during the Korean war as a US airman, which got him to the honky tonks of Germany where he began to hone his characteristic style and began writing his unique songs ... and on to his rise as a music sensation and a recording artist for the legendary Sun Records, alongside Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. The show strings together all Johnny Cash’s great hits and signature tunes as his fascinating larger than - life story unfolds, and woven through this rich musical journey is a fascinating glimpse into the darker side of his life, his
drug taking, outlaw image and the Prison Concerts, and his epic redeeming love story with lifetime soulmate June Carter, a child star of the famous country music icons ‘The Carter Family’. Reminiscing on the tough origins, their rise to fame, and Cash’s drug addiction, they laugh, they joke, they fight and they harmonise, as they bring so many great songs to life, accompanied by the rockabilly rhythm of the Tennessee Two with lush backing vocals from Slim Pickens on Bass and Neil McCann on twangy Fender guitar. It’s a polished and entertaining upbeat musical show to get you yee-haa-ing and your toes a tapping. Catch this awesome show for free at Tewantin Noosa RSL on Saturday 17 October at 8pm. Ensure a great view with a dinner reservation on 5447 1766.

Nibble away at the issue sations with your girlfriends, mothers, grandmas, sisters and daughters – let’s keep on top of our health together. “Get to know your own body, be aware when little changes happen and never be too scared to visit your doctor and have them checked.” Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the charity was thrilled to have the ongoing support of Alana Lowes for this important cause. “Events like Girls’ Night In raise funds to allow the Cancer Council to work across every aspect of women’s cancers, from research to prevention, support and advocacy,” Ms Clift said. “Invite your friends over to share a delicious meal, host a movie night, or enjoy a pajama party - there are plenty of ways you can show your support. “Simply get the girls together for a fun night in and donate what you would normally spend on a night out.” This year, the Cancer Council Queensland aims to raise $1.9 million through Girls’ Night In, including Pink fund-raising events. Show your support by registering to host a Girls’ Night In fund-raiser, pink event or by purchasing merchandise on the official Pink Ribbon Day (26 October). ALANA Lowes is calling on Queensland to share a meal together this October, to help raise vital awareness, support and funds to beat women’s cancers. The celebrity cook, TV presenter and writer has prepared an exclusive recipe in celebration of the Cancer Council Queensland’s Girls’ Night In campaign – in a bid to bring people together in support of the cause. Cancer Council’s Girls’ Night In campaign encourages Queenslanders to get the girls together now to keep the girls together later. One in six Queensland women will be diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancers in their lifetime. This year alone, around 4200 Queensland women will be diagnosed with these cancers – and about 850 will die from the disease. Alana has backed the Cancer Council campaign to show her support for women impacted by the disease and is serving up some delicious advice to encourage others to get involved and make a difference. “Girls’ Night In offers the perfect excuse to get the girls together and to show your support for the fight against women’s cancers - it’s an easy, fun and delicious way to raise funds and awareness,” Alana said. “To help the cause I’ve prepared a special recipe you can use to bring your loved ones together ‘Smoked Paprika Grilled Prawns with Chilli Salt’. “Meals bring people together and I don’t think we should be afraid to use this time as an opportunity to have those all-important conver-

Going organic
Organic farmers grow what's best at different times of the year. That's why variety and availability can differ throughout the year.
RAW, organic foods are more than just the latest in food trends. Uwe Wullfen of Your Every Day Organic Grocer Bioshop Noosa shares some food for thought on why organic really is best. How do you know a product is organic? Organic products meet stringent standards – certification is the public’s assurance that products have been grown to strict procedures without any chemical inputs. Why are organic products better for us? There has been much talk over the years about the link between cancer and other diseases to pesticides. Organic agriculture is one way to prevent nasty chemicals from getting into the air, earth and water that sustain us. Organic farmers build healthy soil. Soil is the foundation of the food chain. The primary focus of organic farming is to use

practices that build healthy soils for our future. When shopping organically, sometimes there is not the range of fruit and vegetables that mainstream suppliers offer. Why is this? Organic producers follow the season of the sun and grow what is best, when it can. They also strive to preserve diversity. The loss of a large variety of species (biodiversity) is one of the most pressing environmental concerns. The good news is many organic farmers and gardeners have been collecting and preserving seeds, and growing unusual varieties for decades. Why not try something that looks a little different, you might just like it.

Founder and surfboard shaper Thomas said he loves what he does. “I studied social work at university and got a degree then I realised it’s not what I wanted to do,” he said. “So I turned my hobby of shaping boards into a career.” Thomas and Jake now visit France once or twice a year and will be in Bali this week shaping boards for the Deus ex Machine shop in Canggu. As well as high-end custom boards for the Thomas Surfboards labels, Thomas and Jake also make boards for Hayden Queensland and performance short boards for French brand UWL. Surfboard study helps industry THE Australian surfboard manufacturing industry could learn a lot from the efforts of elders in Papua New Guinea who are working to reverse the disintegration of their local surfboard industry. Renowned surfboard shaper and University of the Sunshine Coast PhD student Tom Wegener travelled to PNG earlier this year as part of the USC research project he started in 2013 into the sustainability of surfboard manufacturing on the Sunshine Coast. A former Californian professional surfer, Mr Wegener will present his findings from the trip at a special presentation entitled, “Surfboards of Papua New Guinea: How culture supports local industry” on Wednesday 14 October at USC. Media and the public are welcome to attend this free presentation. “A chief elder from PNG got in touch with me and expressed his concerns about the lack of locals surfing the traditional way, which is on wood surfboards that are crafted locally,” Mr Wegener said. “There’s a real worry that the culture is being displaced with the introduction of foam surfboards from Australia and travelling surfers, and they’re extremely conscious of losing
The Australian surfboard manufacturing industry could learn a lot from the efforts of elders in Papua New Guinea, according to renowned surfboard shaper and University of the Sunshine Coast PhD student Tom Wegener. their surfboard industry to imports from overseas.” Mr Wegener spent two weeks in the village of Tupira in the Madang province of PNG to help local surfers and board makers update their design and construction methods in an effort to retain their culture of being surfboard builders. “While I was there, I found that the native balsa wood that they have in abundance throughout PNG could be the resource that helps get the surfboard construction industry back on its feet,” he said. “The Australian industry isn’t facing the same level of threat just yet, but the threat from overseas imports is very real. In Australia, we’re some-
what ambivalent about the culture and if we don’t appreciate its heritage, contribution and importance to the country, then it is entirely possible the surfboard industry could be lost altogether. “I really hope this work opens the eyes of Australian manufacturers, as well as local surfboard shapers. I’d so love for local surfers to attend this presentation in the hope it gives them a renewed appreciation of what they do every day,” he said. “PNG has village chiefs looking after the industry and maybe Australian surfboard manufacturers should do the same - find ways of maintaining local surfboard culture and appreciating its value to Australia.”

Veronis stays consistent In the

WEDNESDAY Ladies - Consistency final was a great struggle between Veronis O’Connor and Jocelyn Rabjohns. Veronis trailed for most of the match however the long ends finally gave her the advantage and victory with 101 to 99. Congratulations to both for a great game. Social bowls winners were Marie Robertson, Glenda Rohde and Elizabeth Dewhirst. Next Wednesday is the Neilsen sponsored event so please place your names on the whiteboard. Thursday’s Handicap Singles is becoming more popular each week. Winners of the day were Daryl Millar, Keith Muir, visitor Ron Conder and Bob Andrews. Twilight Friday game winners Shane Luppi and Rick Goulding +11; runners-up Glenn Patterson and Frank Long with +9 which was
the winning jackpot number. Well done! Sunday’s Mixed Triples Final was a fantastic game to watch. The team of Judy Muir, Daryl Millar and Keith Muir were behind until about halfway through when they drew even with Gary Cornell, Gaye Bible and Veronis O’Connor. Then a battle royal began with both teams very evenly matched until on the 25th end they were 21 all. Keith won the toss for the extra end and although Gary put his bowls near the jack, Daryl drew the ultimate winning shot by sitting on the jack. As skip, Veronis played two good upshots however each time hit Keith’s blocker bowls. Judy, Daryl and Keith were winners by +1. Congratulations to both teams on an excellent Championship Final. New bowls event – Tuesday afternoon 3.30pm start – two games of rotating pairs. This is a fun game and all members are invited to put their names on the whiteboard and you can play either one or both games. – Kitty and Jack

Course gives teens’ careers a boost By TANIA PHILLIPS FOR the past five years a Noosa business has been helping local teens achieve their work dreams – without leaving school. So often young school leavers are told they can’t get a job without experience and of course you can’t get experience without a job – but You First Personal Training is ensuring that high school students learn both the practical and theory side of their profession while still in their final year at school. The business has combined with RTO Fitnance to provide a one-year traineeship and Certificate III registered course for young enthusiastic students, aged 16 and 17, looking to go into the fitness and personal training industry. Fitnance provides the online theory side of things while the kids are hands-on with real clients in a real life work situation with You First. Tyrone Saul from You First Personal Training said under the program students from local high schools including Sunshine Beach State High undertake a Certificate III in Fitness and combine this with a one-year traineeship with You First Personal Training Sunshine Beach. Tyron said the certificate contributes to the students QCE points assisting them in their entry to their chosen university courses.
Students attending a physiology presentation as part of the traineeship program. He said You First Personal Training had assisted more 25 high school students attain such qualifications including Jett Kenny (Lisa Curry and Grant Kenny’s son) and Brisbane Roar player. The students take a full day off school each week to do their practicals on site at the studio/gym
located at Sunshine Beach. According to Tyrone, the course acts as a bridge between high school and university or full-time employment. “We have had one of trainees purchase one of our studios after two years in the program which ef-
fectively employs herself and three others under the age of 20,” he said. Tyrone said with youth unemployment reported by Australian Bureau of Statistics to be as high as 14.92 per cent in January this year it was important to do something to help young people achieve their dreams.
Surfers aim to get all on board FOR many of us, heading to the beach to surf or play in the water is a regular pastime, but for those who have difficulty moving or accessing the sand due to a disability, a day of fun in the sun is nothing more than a dream. But, the Disabled Surfers Association of the Sunshine Coast is turning the dream into a reality thanks to dedicated volunteers who help people with a disability enjoy a day of surfing at local beaches. The organisation holds events throughout the year with the next beach day on Saturday 31 October at Ballinger Beach, Caloundra, then on Saturday 28 November at Maroochydore Beach in front of the Surf Life Saving Club, and the final event is at Noosa Main Beach noosa.starcommunity.com.au
on Saturday 19 March at First Groyne. Anyone who needs assistance to access the beach or surf is welcome to attend and the Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) are also looking for volunteers. “We would love as many volunteer helpers to join our events to make them as fun and safe as possible for our surfers,” association president Tim Byrne said. “Anyone can come and help out.” Sign-on for all events is between 8.30am and 9am with surfing from 9am to 11.30am. There will also be a free barbecue lunch afterwards. Anyone who would like to be involved can phone Tim on 0423 621 371 or email sunny.prez@disabledsurfers.org
The next Noosa surfing session will be held in March next year, but there are plenty of chances to get involved before then.
Thunder lose in tight battle By RANDALL WOODLEY TEWANTIN-NOOSA CRICKET TEWANTIN-NOOSA Thunder firsts went down outright in a game that went right down to the wire after a shaky start. Caloundra set the Thunder 232 to chase and the TNT boys 3-30 at stumps. Things did not improve on day two for TNT with Caloundra taking wickets regularly. The Thunder team could only compile 98 and were asked to bat again. The second innings was a big improvement but still the score was less than expected. Andrew Kratzmann was the standout batsman with 63. Caloundra were set the task of scoring 71 runs in 23 overs for an outright win which seemed the obvious outcome. However the match went down to the last ball of the day with Caloundra scoring the runs for the loss of eight wickets to win outright. Things didn’t go a lot better for the TNT Fifths on day two of their match against Palmwoods. The TNT team, batting for a second time, again fell well short of the mark, only managing 90. Best scorers for the home team were Justin Talbot with a swashbuckling 35 and Ron Davey with 26. In Palmwoods’ second innings the bowlers again toiled hard, but Palmwoods passed the target of 45 with only the loss of two wickets to win the match outright. However it was better news for the seconds who resumed play at 7-177 against Caloundra and continued to bat, eventually declaring on 8-221. Wickets fell to both opening bowlers of Fittchet , Fazackerley and Bobby McGhee had them slump to 4-10. Caloundra were eventually out for 128 giving TNT the win. The Thirds scored first innings points thanks to some tight bowling by youngsters Brett Forster and Tom Olsen and a solid second innings opening stand by Reece Langan and Mick Sobey. Playing at Glasshouse against the home team, TNT thirds scored 120 in their first innings and had the opposition 5-65 at stumps. On day two, TNT bowlers Forster and Olsen stepped up with a disciplined spell that had them on the defensive from the start finishing with two a-piece. Phil Drescher cleaned up the last wicket to claim first innings points. The second dig saw openers Reece Langan (30) and Mick Sobey (25) getting off to a solid start with a 48 run stand but the rest could only manage to get the score to 100 leaving Glasshouse to score 124 off 22 overs. The home team finished seven runs short to give TNT the victory.

New-found Auckland love Life of
brine PHIL JARRATT
AUCKLAND shines, even when the sun doesn’t. Last weekend was spent discovering Auckland. Not before time, I guess, having dropped into the airport at least a dozen times previously (usually on the way to somewhere imagined to be more exotic) without setting foot in New Zealand’s biggest city. Before leaving for Kiwiland, we dropped in on old mate Murray Mexted, holidaying on the Gold Coast, eager to elicit some tips on where to go and how to behave in the land of the long, black raincloud. Being a Wellington man, the former All Blacks skipper was none too impressed with our plan to make Auckland our city stop rather than his own more cultured habitat. Nevertheless, over dinner and some good NZ rose and pinot gris, he gave us some key pronunciations and told us the towns where we shouldn’t stop. And that was pretty much all we needed to know, Muzza said. Auckland didn’t start that well, with a scrap over the transmission of the rental car I’d ordered, a hotel that couldn’t be found because its signage and street number were obscured by construction works, and the fact that its parking was at the other end of the city. Despite that, we found we kind of liked the fading grandeur of the Grand Windsor, just a couple of blocks back off the port and its myriad brew bars and chowder houses. We liked the city’s European alleyways even more, and uncovered a cosy delight in the Occidental’s Belgian Cafe, where the moules frites was as good as most I’ve had in French seaports, the wine crisp and tasty, and the service efficient and friendly. On this chilly spring Friday night, the city seemed vibrant and full of fun. We spent the first of Saturday on the harbour, doing the touristy things, and ended up in Devonport, from which point the arresting Auckland skyline is revealed in all its reinvented glory from across the water. Devon-
Santa came to First Point Noosa a little early last week, when surfing dogs guru Chris De Aboitiz and his little reindeers popped through town for meetings with VetshopAustralia, a dog obedience clinic and a Christmas card video shoot with Panga Productions for the Noosa Festival of Surfing. Look for the results on the festival website in December.
Contented author. A glass of Kiwi rose and a vintage Dickens. Picture: JACKIE JARRATT port hasn’t been re-invented yet, although the gentrification is underway. Its welcoming cafes were crowded and noisy and full of life and wonderful local seafood choices. But the biggest surprise in Devonport was its multitude of antiquarian bookshops. It seems like a lifetime ago that Berkelouws existed only in this form, and Sydney’s Paddington, Balmain and Glebe were full of such treasure troves. In Australia, harsh economic realities have seen to most of these, but what a pleasant surprise to find them flourishing in Devonport. I lost myself for hours in the cramped spaces between overflowing shelves of red and brown-spined classics, eventually succumbing to a 1910 pocket edition of Dickens’ American Notes. Later in Auckland’s long daylight saving afternoon, we caught up with former Noosa surf chick Jane Purtell for drinks at a chic waterfront bar, then segued on to a fabulous dinner at a place called Monsoon Poon, where southern and eastern Asiatic influences ruled both decor

I don’t know why it’s been off our radar all these years, but it’s not anymore. Tonight, I write from the old goldmining town of Thames, in a backpacker joint, sitting at a kitchen bench across from a young Frenchman who keeps asking me questions about Noosa. Just come, I tell him, and now, if you don’t mind, I have a very important column to write for a major metropolitan newspaper. I’d go to my room to finish it, but you can’t swing a cat in there and my wife is sobbing on the bed about the shared bathroom situation, so I guess I’ll soldier on. The reason we are in Thames, at the foot of the Coromandel Peninsula, is that for the next couple of days we’ll cycle the Hauraki Rail Trail, which interests me greatly, not only because I like mining history but also because it’s basically flat, which is where cycling is at for me these days. More on that next week. Dale’s last ride MY OLD scribe mate from the 1970s halcyon
Picture: JIM NEVILL years of surf journalism, Drew Kampion, longretired on Whidbey Island in Washington State, alerts me to the fact that an era has ended. Last week Dale Webster retired from daily surfing, so he could undergo mandatory surgery, after 14,641 consecutive days of surfing at least three waves a day. Don’t worry about the calculator – that’s every day since 1975. I’ve been aware of Dale’s mad mission for a great many years, and always thought of how much in life he must have forsaken in order to achieve it. Work, weddings, funerals, bar mitzvahs, landmark birthday parties, all these things can take you away from the beach for a day or more. But Dale Webster simply would not go. Rain, hail, shine, snow, sleet, pollution warnings or hangovers be damned, every day Dale had to go catch his three waves. Until now, when it’s surgery or die.You have to dip your trucker cap to the guy, don’t you? Forty years of surfing every day, he’s gone where no man (or woman) has gone before him. I just hope he didn’t miss anything really important. As old mate Paul Neilsen used to say, having surfed his brains out, turn your back on the ocean and the world is in front of you.

Bradbury skates in to golf A SPECIAL guest appearance from gold medal-winning Olympian Steven Bradbury spurred on more than 120 golfers as they took to the tee at Noosa Springs Golf Course on Friday. Steven shot to fame in 2002 when he won the 1000m speed skate event at the Winter Olympics after his opponents were snagged in a last-corner pile-up. He helped raise over $20,000 for Sunshine Butterflies, which will go towards developing the Our Backyard hobby farm in Cooroibah. After Steven arrived by helicopter he joined the more than 120 local golfers who turned out to support the event and enjoy a morning of golf to help boost the local charity.

A real hive of activity Between the
flags RON LANE
IT WAS definitely a full on weekend for all areas of surf lifesaving; patrols, nippers and competition. With school holidays coming to an end, crowds are gradually starting to thin out. At Noosa, the Sunday afternoon patrol reported a busy time with two seizures, one requiring transportation to Nambour Hospital, several first aid cases resulting from injuries received on a low tide sandbar and a young girl struck with a surf board. On Noosa West, another hospital case occurred when a patient was diagnosed with suspected spinal injuries. Interesting to note all occurred outside the flagged area. With the second weekend of nippers completed, the clubs Noosa (combined with Peregian) and Sunshine have reported great membership numbers. Noosas Nipper chairperson Sam Smith said, “With Noosa and Peregian now working together, we have a combined membership of 568, and this is very good. We have a busy season ahead. To get things moving this weekend is our annual Rainbow Beach Surf Carnival, with all age groups competing. It is a two-day carnival and it is always a big event.” Sunshine reported quiet patrols with no incidents. For their nippers, Sunday was busy with the club running their Nipper Family Day; and this was well attended. Like Noosa /Peregian, Sunshine will be attending the Rainbow Beach Carnival. We wish all our nipper families a happy weekend. For our competitors, it was definitely full on with both Noosa and Sunshine travelling to the Gold Coast to contest the Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold. This is an endurance event with a 41.8kl long course and a 33.6 short course and with its multi-discipline events is considered to be one of the most prestigious on the surfing calendar. The program consists of open and age categories as well as individual and team events. (This includes mixed teams.) Happy to relate both our clubs performed well. For Sunshine Tristian Collins, competing in his first Coolangatta Gold U/19 category finished in sixteenth place. For a novice, this is indeed a good effort; and in the U/19 team event Ben Ashman, Nick Sloman, Zion Pettigrove and Tom Wilson finished sixth. “For some of our competitors, it is the first time they have competed in an endurance race, so we are happy with their all-round effort,” coach Max Pettigrove said. Contesting the Open Mixed Team Short Course Event, Noosa’s squad of Kirra Molnar, James Widdicombe and Jake Batholomeaus finished in first place, Tainui Kaihau finished third in the U/19 short course. In the 50 + category Tim Mandville won the long course and Molly Bainbridge took ninth in the Open Female. This event, which is run by Surf Life Saving Australia, is contested by the finest that Australia has to offer. The results that have been achieved by our locals are something to be proud of and speak volumes for the work being done by our coaching staff of both clubs. Well done to all involved. During the winter months, aspects of our work as lifesavers can come under review when deemed necessary; right from State level down to the smallest clubs, and rightly so for we must never forget that we are first and foremost a rescue organisation. Recently as a result of Internal Review at State level Queensland, the Jet Rescue Boat seen patrolling our beaches from North ShoreSouth, has been transferred to the Gold Coast. However, this will not leave us short for an extra Jet Ski Patrol is now on duty and the high level of surveillance to which we have become accustomed is being maintained.
Finding an M&M in a plate full of flour was just one of the many challenges of the day as Sunshine Beach Surf Club welcomed new and returning Nipper families.
Fun day for Nippers under the sun By DEAN SMALLMAN THE annual Sunshine Beach Nippers family fun day took place under beautiful conditions last Sunday as hundreds of Nippers took on a Tough Mudder type event. This annual event is organised to welcome back returning families to Nippers at Sunshine as well as new families. After undertaking their regular nippers, the kids took to a variety of challenges both individually and as groups with huge rewards offered (mainly lolly snakes). Before the main event got underway, the kids were attacked with flour bombs before being hit by water balloons thrown by an over excited group of parents. During the main event, the kids undertook a variety of challenges that included removing an M&M from a plate of flour by using only their mouths, a speed test that saw the kids tackle a course that included swallowing a shot of baked beans, followed by eating a dry Weet-bix and finally consuming a shot of green custard, after which the kids where doused with a fire hose before being covered in flour. The day was completed with a timely and much-needed swim before everyone enjoyed a family barbecue with all bread donated by the Tindal family at Bakers Delight in Noosa Junction.

It wasn't just the kids who copped a flouring. This week, the events will be a little more traditional as the U8 to U15s head north to Rainbow Beach for the two-day Banjo Memorial carnival. This is the only carnival of the year when the U8 to U10 age groups see the bigger kids in action and what a great weekend it will be for the Sunshine Beach Nipper Crew. And finally the Sunshine Beach U14s are
completing their Surf Rescue Certificates (SRC) over the next few weeks, which will see 25 new patrolling members put on the red and yellow for the remainder of the season. This is the biggest group of SRCs ever put through Sunshine Beach SLSC, and is testament to the great Nipper programme run by Dave Gleeson and all the great helpers that make this club such a great place to be.
Fun in the sun FUN, fitness and friendship - that’s what Noosa Nippers are all about. Pictured are the U13 girls having fun in the sun on Sunday before taking the boards out into the surf. Anyone interested in joining the Nippers can still get into any age group from U6 to U14. Phone your local club for more information. Picture: DONNA FREY

Bryce is a prized boxer By RON LANE HIS name is Bryce Hegarty, and he is yet another local young man starting to make a name for himself in the tough world of Amateur Boxing. Working out at the Noosa Box Office (NBO) gym under trainer Israel Kani, Bryce boxes in the 75kg division. Earlier this month, he travelled to a tournament at Acacia Ridge, Brisbane, where he was successful in winning the annual Golden Gloves. This was Bryce’s second consecutive win in the Golden Gloves tournament. Bryce, who has a total of 54 fights for 48 wins said, “It was great to win the Golden Gloves again and what made it better it was also my 21st birthday.” Late tonight (Thursday) along with two other local boxers Sam Cameron- Hands and James Beasley of the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, Bryce will board his first ever international flight; a flight that will take him to Germany, where along with

his travelling companions he will represent Queensland; boxing against the German team for the Brandenburg Cup. Bryce will then return home, and after a four-day break will again fly out, this time to China. Under the care of Australian coach Kevin Smith the purpose of this is to attend an intensive two-week sparring and training camp. “I can’t wait; Germany then China. It will be a great learning experience.” Asked how he started off in boxing he said, “My dad Shane was friends with Israel, but I was playing basketball. My brother Drennen who’s a year older started going to Israel's gym once a week and I followed. He was 11 and I was 10 and it started from there.” When not boxing, his other love is mountain running. “My other goal is I want to be the King of the Mountain; you know, win Pomona.” Our local lads, we wish them well.
Badminton jamboree in Noosa MORE than 350 badminton players from across Australia and New Zealand will converge on Noosa Leisure Centre from 18-24 October for the 2015 Atalanta Jamboree. “Noosa Leisure Centre is thrilled to host the annual women’s badminton contest, which has grown to include more than 60 Australian teams, and 15 from New Zealand,” Leisure Centre co-ordinator Cathy Simon said. “Not only will the jamboree showcase our picturesque shire to visitors from far and wide, but highlight the quality facilities Noosa Leisure Centre offers. It’s also a fantastic celebration of women in sport,” Ms Simon said. Held in a different location each
year, 2015 will be the event’s third time in Noosa. “When the opportunity arose again for 2015, there was no difficulty for the delegates at the 2014 annual general meeting to vote in favour when they recalled the wonderful atmosphere and attractions enjoyed in those former years,” event spokeswoman, Val Nesbitt said, of the decision to return to Noosa. “The ladies teams are really looking forward to visiting the array of beaches and holiday attractions.” Ms Simon said spectators were welcome with competition happening between 18 and 24 October at various times of the day between 8am and 6pm. The competition includes all grades from A to D5. Ms Nesbitt
also thanked the Cooroy Badminton Club for providing the jamboree an additional venue. The Victorian Ladies Badminton Association established the Atalanta Jamboree as an annual teams contest between the combined Melbournebased ladies badminton associations and the Geelong Women’s Association. It has grown to include teams from all but one state, and New Zealand. “Women’s daytime or midweek badminton has been a strong and lasting feature throughout Australia and New Zealand since the early 1930s,” Ms Nesbitt said. “This strength has helped to build the Atalanta Jamboree to the long lasting successful event of the past 32 years.”
Noosa Leisure Centre is preparing to host the 2015 Atalanta Jamboree badminton event.
Outstanding river catches this week By JACK MANGROVE
Shelley Johnson with a nice 62cm flathead. noosa.starcommunity.com.au
RIVER fishing in the Noosa River has been nothing short of outstanding over the past week. Quality whiting has been coming from Gympie Terrace, the Dog Beach and the Frying Pan. Whyba Creek and the lake have also produced some great fish, some of them touching the 40cm mark. Yabbies worms and peeled prawns have all been doing the job well with poppers and surface walkers like the River2sea Skinny Dogs in the 65mm size. Woods Bays has also been producing some nice fish. An early
morning fish has been rewarding with quality trevally, tailor and large brim. Soft plastics have been the go here with the squidgy prawn range working a treat. Heading up the Tewantin stretch of the river has again produced some fantastic giant trevally, plastics like the fuse prawn heads have been working well, also in the same area flathead have been feeding profusely with a number of fish over the 70 mark been caught this week. Out on the beach, things have been sensational; most eastern beaches have held good schools of whiting bream and the ever-present swallowtail dart, and with the
evening tight at the moment, jewies have been coming in to feed and have been well accounted for on the southern beaches around Coolum. Larger baits, like a mullet fillets, bonito fillets and worms clumped onto a large hook are all perfect baits for jew. Up on the Noosa Northshore, the southern migration of the tailor has begun. The fish are a little leaner now after spawning up at Fraser Island, with this they are hungry for prawns, mullet, bonito strips and, of course, a good old-fashioned pilchard. It hasn’t been the best week offshore with most of last week
seeing big swells and higher winds. The earlier part of the week saw a couple of the charters head out with some good results. Last Sunday was the prim day and angler headed out early, North Reef has been fishing well for moses perch, pearl perch, squire, grass sweetlip, coral cod, sea bream and gold spot cod. North Reef has also seen some great schools of tuna, floater baits have been the favoured way of targeting these speedster’s of the sea. Smaller craft headed to Sunshine Reef and were well rewarded with sweetlip and coral trout. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures!
