Rodeo Queen is crowned royally Casey’s tips

THE 2015 Warwick Rodeo is fast approaching and over the weekend Warwick announced its new addition to royalty. The Rodeo Queen Quest was held on Saturday night with numerous awards across various age categories but the big winner was this year's Miss Warwick Rodeo Queen Georgie Stower. Supporters packed the Douglas Feez Pavilion on Saturday night with 15 entrants battling it out. In the end, Georgie Stower took the top prize in her first attempt.
“It’s a great honour to win this title. It is a very prestigious event and I absolutely take pride in winning,” Ms Stower said. “My first job as rodeo queen is going to Sydney with Miss Rodeo Australia to meet the international queens. Then it will be a full week of rodeo next week.” Ms Stower grew up in Pittsworth where she also went to school and currently works for Charlton Produce on the outskirts of Toowoomba. “My passions are rodeo and campdrafting which is also why I entered the competition,” she said.
“I first heard about the competition many years ago and have always admired all the girls. I thought this year would be a great year as I felt like I was well prepared and ready to have a go. I have absolutely loved being an entrant in the quest and it’s an honour to win and be the face of Australia’s most famous rodeo and campdraft. “I can’t wait to see what the next 12 months have to offer. Hopefully I can inspire some young women like myself to enter next year.” The official start of the rodeo will be on Monday 19 October.
Southern Downs local sits in youth parliament By DANE LILLINGSTONE SOUTHERN Downs local Fraser Peterson has joined a host of youths around Australia at Parliament House in Brisbane for the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament. The Youth Parliament is an annual event that invites 15 to 25-year-olds to see firsthand the inner workings of parliament. The process involves taking a seat in the House, debating mock bills, holding votes on these bills and taking place in mock Question Time. The initiative is run by young people and is for young people where participants can engage on community issues as youth representatives.
There were 93 young leaders participating from across Queensland in the 20th sitting of the event that saw the election of a temporary youth premier and eight new youth bills debated. A 16-year-old from Killarney, Fraser, who is currently at Scots PGC College, said it was an experience he wouldn’t forget. “It was a great experience, and I’d recommend it to anyone,” he said. “It was good to see a heap of different people from around the country and what they’ve done with their lives.” Fraser got accepted into the five-day program after putting in an application at the beginning of the year. He said that al-
though he wasn’t interested in a career in politics, the experience opened his eyes to a potential future in the industry. “If it’s anything like I did in those five days, I would be a politician,” he said. “I was in the agricultural resources and environment committee, and we wrote a bill on increasing live exports from Queensland and then we also did a part on eco-tourism and how we can sustain the Great Barrier Reef.” He said if he were a politician, he would be turning his focus to regional areas. “I’d be trying to help people in rural Queensland and trying to get better support for farmers,” he said.

The trial over Gail Lynch’s alleged murder continues in Toowoomba.
Warwick murder trial begins IAN Phillip Hannaford will face the Toowoomba Supreme Court, charged with the murder of missing Warwick grandmother Gail Lynch. Mr Hannaford, 61, was arrested in July 2012, three weeks after Ms Lynch’s disappearance, and has remained in custody ever since. Mr Hannaford was the former boyfriend of Ms Lynch, 55, and has pleaded not guilty to her murder. There are expected to be more than 50 witnesses called to the stand over the course of the trial, which is expected to take several weeks. Justice John Bond will oversee the case.

End domestic violence call
In brief Racetrack dare A 28-year-old man from New South Wales has been fined after invading the racetrack at Allman Park during the Warwick Cup on Saturday. The man was detained by security staff after making his way onto the track after a race. He was later fined by police after telling them that he was on a bucks’ night and that “it was a dare”. He was fined $353 for being a public nuisance.

There will be refreshments, guest speakers and a Q&A session. Zonta’s main event will be a breakfast held on Friday 20 November. It will start at 6.30am at Kings Theatre at the Warwick RSL and tickets are $35 with money going to the organisation to end domestic violence. Zonta Club president Jacinta Fromm said their organisation was about raising awareness and money to stop domestic violence. “Zonta is committed to doing as many activities as possible to raise awareness, information sessions and fund-raising,” she said. “We want to try and put some money towards the root cause and things like prevention
techniques and education.” The Local Government Association will also be raising awareness through a candlelight march on Thursday 10 December, from 5.30pm, at Warwick Town Hall. White Ribbon ambassador councillor Neil Meiklejohn said domestic violence needed to stop. “As a White Ribbon ambassador it’s about men taking a stand with men saying ‘no it’s not OK’. Too often it’s seen as a women’s issue, Men have a role to educate other men and say it’s not OK and they need to stop,” he said. “Prevention is so much easier than cure.” “The destruction of women’s and children’s lives can’t keep going on.”
Stanthorpe police have caught a driver doing 164 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone. On Sunday about 5pm police intercepted a Holden sedan on the New England Highway in Thulimbah doing 64 kilometres per hour over the limit. When stopped by police and asked why he was going so fast, the man replied that he was “running out of fuel and needed to find a service station quickly”. Police were confused by the man’s answer and his reckless behaviour resulted in an onthe-spot fine of $1099 and the suspension of his driver’s licence for six months.
Rollover on highway Two people were involved in a car rollover off the New England Highway near Wallangarra on Friday. Police said that about 1.30pm the 44-yearold driver veered onto the wrong side of the road when his car rolled down an embankment. A 46-year-old passenger was taken to hospital while the driver suffered minor injuries.
A man pulled over in the early hours of Saturday morning by Stanthorpe police has been charged with several drug offences. Police intercepted the man at 1.30am on 10 October on the New England Highway at the Summit. A subsequent search revealed man to be in possession of ice and four glass smoking pipes.

DOMESTIC violence is the often silent war fought regularly in our own backyards but some in the Southern Downs community are taking a stand. The Zonta Club Warwick and Warwick Safe Haven will be teaming up over the next few months to present a range of activities in Warwick to raise money and awareness for victims of domestic violence. The organisations will be holding planned events over the next couple of months that will co-incide with the international 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence. It will commence on 25 November, White Ribbon Day, and conclude on 10 December, Human Rights Day. Safe Haven president Bette Bonney said they originally wanted to get Rosie Batty to come and give a talk but she couldn’t. Ms Batty’s office sent Safe Haven a DVD of the documentary The Nice House to show exclusively to the Southern Downs. “It’s an impacting but sensitively produced re-enactment of some things that were happening in her home and also features interviews with her after the death of her son,” she said. “It’s very impacting.” She said it would not be appropriate for those under 18. The screening will be on Tuesday 10 November, at

Letters Recycling roundabout I’VE been reading with interest the back and forth arguments about refuse and recycling bins. Every household is different (one person to multiple people) and produces different waste, whether it be bottles, (from sauces, jams, wine or beer), plastic waste (milk cartons etc) and cardboard (cereal boxes etc). Sure, these things should end up in the recycling and most do. What about the plastic bags from the supermarket? No, they are biodegradable, but they are not recyclable, so they have to go into the refuse bin. People in apartments and flats don’t necessarily have the option to compost their food scraps, so it goes into the rubbish as well. Now, due to the safety of public health, the council must do a weekly collection of garbage. This has been going on since council garbage collection began, when men used to run behind the truck, grab the metal cans and dump the contents into the truck and move on to the next house. It was done to reduce pest problems (such as rats) and health problems. The biggest cost to most vehicles when running them is fuel and most fuel is used when stopping and accelerating. If people want to help the council save money, there is no requirement for them to put their wheelie bin out each week if it is not full! Let the truck drive on past to the next house. If a resident is able to put their recycling bin out once a month, do so. If they can put their waste bin out once a fortnight or less, do so, there is nothing stopping them. Where I lived previously, I would put my refuse bin out one week and the recycling bin the next, alternating the weeks so only one bin went out at a time. Since moving, I have not yet had the opportunity to start a compost heap or get some chooks to consume the food scraps, so sadly it goes into the refuse bin and as such, the bin is put out weekly, even though it’s not quite full, but would be overflowing if I waited an extra week. This is a household of four adults. So instead of judging people and making assumptions based on one’s own circumstances, take into account that some families, especially those with young/small children, will produce a lot of waste while others will produce less, but that doesn’t prevent anybody doing their bit and

Free camping cash I READ with interest your article regarding the indecision by the SDRC in regard to the free camping story (SFT, 8 October, page 3). My wife and I have just returned from a two-month trip around this great state. I would just like to make a point in regard to free camping. I had reason to discuss this situation in Longreach, where the Apex Club have established a free park four kilometres north of the town. Several park owners lobbied the local council in an attempt to have this free park closed as they stated that it was hurting their business. One enterprising councillor discussed this with the campers who were currently camped in this area. He provided a locked box and situated it at this camp area, returning every morning and night requesting that campers provide details, e.g. receipts etc. of their purchases in Longreach. At the end of the week he collected these dockets and tallied them up, presenting the findings to council at the next meeting. The total spent by these campers even surprised him and completely blew the council away - a total of $50,000 a week was spent by these travellers, yes $50,000. Purchases included entry fees to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, the Qantas Museum, excursions, fuel, groceries, gas, gifts, meals, alcohol and clothing. My wife and I spent in excess of $400 visiting this town in four days. Time council made a decision, as they are losing valuable business. John and Robyn Griffith, Legume.
King Dam and we would have a lot more water. If the SDRC paid me $50,000 for 12 months I could educate them on how to spend money wisely and save money, then they would not be in debt for $36 million, as I never went broke on my farm and business. The other day I was at an auction sale and the people I talked to said they would be voting for a complete new council and I agree. John Salata, Glen Aplin.
Council antics THE Tenterfield Council is moving away from democracy in the antics of its mayor and some of its councillors. The mayor Peter Petty once again defied ethics and used his two votes entitlement to call for a plebiscite to legalise his personal desire to eliminate wards and put in its place a scheme where a majority of total voters in the shire with no connection to the former wards and have no interest in them could elect candidates to council with similar views. What would happen is certain areas would dominate in interest from council for various reasons. In particular I would say those areas who can grab a councillor to back them would do better than those areas that have little support. So I believe it is necessary to have elected councillors to represent specific areas (wards). Jack Clarke, Rivertree.
Thumbs Up Thumbs Down
Money wasted WHAT a waste of money. The SDRC spent $4 million of ratepayers' money on the Emu Swamp Dam Project and now they are walking away from it. I always said that the SDRC has no brains. This $4 million should have been spent on Storm

Nurse Kathryn Anning will be running the clinics.
Health clinic in town THE Mobile Women’s Health Service will be passing through the Southern Downs in the coming weeks. Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service (DDHHS) would like to remind women who have had the cervical cancer vaccine that it is recommended they continue to get pap smears. DDHHS Mobile Women’s Health Nurse Kath Anning said that many women did not know that it was recommended to continue getting pap smears after the vaccine. “All women who have ever had sex are recommended to commence having pap smears between the ages of 18 and 20 years, or two years after first having sex, whichever is later, even if they have had the cervical cancer vaccine,” Ms Anning said. The service is free and confidential. The clinics will be conducted at: Warwick on Wednesday, 21 October at the hospital from 9am to 3pm; Stanthorpe on Thursday, 22 October at the hospital from 9am to 3pm; and Clifton on Tuesday, 27 October from 9am to 3pm. Appointments are necessary. For an appointment in Warwick contact 4660 3841 or Stanthorpe 4683 3460 or Clifton 4697 3097.

Hollywood at home THE Southern Downs region will play home to a new Australian television series to be filmed in locations around Warwick, Stanthorpe, Sandy Creek and Killarney. The show Wanted will star gold Logie winner Rebecca Gibney, who is also a co-creator, and will premiere on Channel 7 in 2016. The drama series will follow two strangers who intervene in a deadly carjacking and proceed to be chased across Australia with a car full of money. The series will feature the main cast travelling through rural areas, which is where the Southern Downs will feature prominently. Bushlands, creeks, buildings and roads throughout Warwick, Stanthorpe and Killarney will showcase the Southern Downs on a national stage. Filming commences on the series on Monday 12 October and will continue through to 29 October. It will be the second television
production to commence in the region in as many weeks with filming for a Supercheap Auto national commercial at Warwick Airport being shot from 7-9 October. Queensland will see the economic benefits of the series through filming and post-production both being completed in the state. The series is said to have already contacted local businesses about being involved in the shooting of the series. Mayor Peter Blundell said it would be good opportunity to showcase the Southern Downs. “The natural beauty of the Southern Downs, with its contrasting landscapes and historic buildings, lends itself to attracting production companies for films and advertisements. With easy proximity to Brisbane and strong local business support there is an opportunity for Southern Downs Regional Council to further promote the municipality as an ideal place for film production,” he said.
“Local film production brings new expenditure to the region and allows local business to pitch their skills and expertise to the production companies. “Given the interest in the Southern Downs, with two productions underway, it may be time for council to be more proactive and put together a prospectus to Screen Queensland. “Council staff are working with the production company to ensure all necessary permits and road closures are in place for filming to proceed without delay.” Wanted is being produced by Matchbox Pictures and R & R Productions with support through Screen Australia and Screen Queensland. There is also an opportunity to be an extra in the series with casting looking for local men and women aged 18-80 to play characters like townsfolk, barflies and truckies. Stanthorpe internet flies with more NBN By DANE LILLINGSTONE TELSTRA has announced another allocation of the National Broadband Network (NBN) will now be available to homes and businesses across Stanthorpe, Woodenbong, The Falls and Cottonvale. Almost 500 additional residences will now have access to the network. This follows on the back of the original offering of NBN in Stanthorpe in June this year with more than 1600 premises around the area eligible to connect.
Telstra Country Wide area general manager for Southern Queensland May Boisen said the launch would open doors for locals and provides incentives for tourism. “Tourism is a major economic pillar of the Stanthorpe community and the NBN’s fast internet is a major drawcard for region’s tourism industry as visitors are increasingly able to access reliable wi-fi connections,” she said. “We are seeing real payoffs for local businesses who invest in this
access for their guests and their own business operations. “We strongly encourage residents and local businesses in parts of Stanthorpe to look into the benefits the NBN can provide.” Broadband use in Australia has reached unprecedented levels with last year's volume of traffic carried over Telstra’s fixed network increasing by more than 30 per cent. Ms Boisen said local technicians and store staff - including those at the Warwick store - had been receiv-
ing special training to help residents transition to the NBN. “We are aiming to make sure that for those who choose to sign up with Telstra the process is simple one call to our dedicated customer service centre team and we will help take care of the rest,” she said. Bev’s big win THE Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day will be celebrated on 26 October this year and local businesses have been getting involved. Curves will celebrate its 10th year supporting Pink Ribbon, with an estimated $1.6 million raised since the partnership began. Bev Bevis was diagnosed with cancer over 15 years ago and she credits Curves and her shift towards a healthy lifestyle as big factors in her ongoing health. “In December 1999 I was told that I had breast cancer. On 17 December I had a partial lumpectomy, on 23 December I was called back to have more lymph nodes removed. I didn’t have chemo but I had to

have seven weeks of radium. After the second and third lots of radium I started to feel breathless and when I mentioned this to the radiologist she said that was part of the side effects,” she said. “I happened to see a relieving doctor who sent me for an X-ray which showed the radium had burnt holes in my lungs and nothing more could be done for me. “So it was up to me to help myself. I tried a few different exercise programs which helped to a point. In September 2012 I saw a display for Curves and decided to give it a go. The best decision I have ever made. I got stronger and fitter, great, and not long after I started I could walk up the 27 steps without stop-

ping half way to catch my breath. “Although the pain and the breathlessness will never go completely I can now manage them thanks to Curves. “At my last mammogram it didn’t hurt and there was no bruising, which usually happened. It’s almost 16 years since I was diagnosed and both my arms are now the same size. “I feel better than I have for 20 years. I feel I have my life back.” It is estimated that one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. Local Warwick gym Curves has encouraged everyone to get active with regular exercise to help reduce cancer risks.
Bev Bevis has made a healthy transformation and continues to fight.

Big day of racing By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Warwick Cup has celebrated another highly successful year with a big day of racing at Allman Park. The 155th Warwick Credit Union Cup was a televised TAB meeting for the first time with seven races spread throughout the day. Warwick Turf Club secretary Kristen Doyle said the turnout and weather couldn’t have been any better. “It was one of the best days I’ve seen for a cup day. It was a great day, the weather was perfect and it was close to a record crowd for a Warwick Cup,” she said. She said the marquee was at capacity of 460 and there were over 1500 people passing through the Allman Park on the day. “It was record numbers this year,” she said. The next event hosted by the Warwick Turf Club will be the Railway Hotel Allora Cup TAB Meeting on Sunday 15 November.

Markets hit prime time
Casey’s tips
By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE monthly Warwick Uber Markets were on again over the weekend. Market co-ordinator Christie Russell said it was another successful event, with a television commercial currently in the works and plans already in place for Christmas. “We are putting a TV commercial on for the markets, it is going to be on Channel 10. We are going to be highlighting the activities we have on offer and some of the stalls on offer at our markets,” she said. “The commercial is to really get the word out in Warwick about the Warwick Uber Markets and what we have to offer the community. “I am planning a huge pass the parcel for the December market to celebrate Christmas. “We are also looking at having water fights in the park during the next few months to cool off in the hot weather.” Christie also said that they would be putting on a raffle for a cause in the coming months. “We have also just started a raffle with all proceeds going to a local mum who has recently been going through some hard times, her son was diagnosed with cancer - he had brain surgery and has lost a lot of function. The raffle is for three party

Tickets are expected to be available at the next markets. The next Uber Markets will be on Saturday 14 November, from 10am-2.30pm.
THE 53rd annual St Mark’s Women’s Guild Rose Festival has seen another successful year of colourful competition. The Parish Hall on Grafton Street hosted this year’s event with a range of prizes and some beautiful roses on display. It was noted that this year wasn’t easy on rose growers with weather a constant problem. Leading up to the event, Warwick and the Southern Downs suffered from some strong winds that were not in the favour of rose growers. Judge Glynn Close from Allora was visibly emotional at the roses on display and acknowledged the difficulty some had this year. “It wasn’t easy and everyone needs to remember it’s the opinion on the day,” she said. “There were a lot of beautiful roses.” The big winner on the day was Cheryl Sondergeld

Casey’s tips
Rodeo’s dust is a must HOLD on tight, it’s that time of year again - time for the famous Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft. On the last full weekend of October every year, the nation’s top rodeo riders and the best broncos and bucking bulls gather for the Warwick Rodeo - known far and wide as “Australia’s Most Famous”. The seven-day program of events keeps the competitors and crowds coming back each year. And with this year’s event doubling as the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) National Finals, expect more action, more thrills and lots of fun as the top rodeo and campdraft riders descend on the town over the next week. The Warwick rodeo is so famous that it was immortalized in song by Australian country music legend Buddy Williams in the early 1940s. This event has a long tradition with the very first official Warwick rodeo held in 1906, although buckjump competitions were recorded near Warwick as far back as 1857. Don’t hang up your hat, let Rope and Ride know what you need.
Warwick become the home of the regular Australian championships from around 1928 and in 1931 the opening campdrafting competition became the Warwick Gold Cup - named because of the presence of the Governor of Queensland Sir John Goodwin who present the first gold cup to the winner. The Warwick Gold Cup, paid for each year by the business houses of Warwick, remains today as the Holy Grail of campdrafting in Australia. Today, Warwick Rodeo and Gold Cup Campdraft attracts more than 30,000 people with competitors and horses travelling from every mainland state to compete. The event, held at the showground, now spans seven days from Monday 19 October through to Sunday 25, with plenty of things to see and plenty of action and prize money and entertainment. On Thursday 22 October Kent Tonscheck performs after 6pm, on Friday 23 October Mik Oberle starts after 6pm and on Saturday night James Anderson performs.
The rodeo action start on Friday night under lights and there will be two hours of action-packed riding and roping along with live music, full bar facilities and barbecue on the grounds. Action starts early in the rodeo arena on Saturday morning while downtown Warwick comes alive with the Rose and Rodeo Festival street parade, markets and fun. Attention returns to the rodeo arena after lunch and the street parade where there will be campdraft finals and rodeo action through until 9.30pm when James Anderson will play and there will be dancing under the stars. The action starts early on Sunday with the second round of the Warwick Gold Cup and then it’s rodeo action all morning before an afternoon of finals. The first final - the Warwick Gold Cup - starts at noon and then the top 12 riders in all six open rodeo events decide who takes home the major portion of prize money in the best rodeo action to be seen anywhere in Australia.
Ride high in the saddle at the rodeo THE Warwick Rodeo is now just under two weeks away but finding the right rodeo gear is not always easy. However Cliff and Rose McFarlane are hoping that is all going to change. The couple, after years of working in piggerys and other jobs, decided it was time for a change of job and have opened the new Rope and Ride store in Fitzroy Street - just in time for the rodeo.
And while they have opened in time for the rodeo, they are still waiting on stock and working out what to carry. Cliff said they realise the rodeo riders needed specialist gear and would love to hear from locals and visitors about what their needs are. “We look forward to supplying what people need and we encourage people to come in and tell us what they want,” he said.
Cliff said there be a bit and spur maker coming up for the rodeo who will then supply the shop with stock so that locals can buy what they need at other times of the year. He said he and his wife loved Western gear and quarter horses and wanted to opened a store to supply Western riding gear, clothing and saddlery equipment. “I am getting a bit long in the tooth to be chasing pigs,” he said.
He said the store was “part of my retirement plan” and he hoped to be running it for the next decade or two. The plan is to import clothing and equipment from the US as well as sourcing stock from Australia and locally, including hand-made leather gear. Find Rope and Ride at 79 Fitzroy Street, Warwick. Open Monday to Friday 8.30pm to 5.15pm and Saturday from 8.30apm to 1pm.

Kids learn from Free Range fun
Enjoying the fun at bush Kindy.
Fun for kids at Bush Kindy ONCE a week the kindy children at Little Rascals Child Care Centre in Killarney enjoy a different kind of experience. After hearing of a Bush Kindy program run at a Kindergarten in Melbourne, Little Rascals decided to introduce their own Bush Kindy. Bush Kindy involves the children heading to a bush location situated on the edge of Killarney once a week without toys and play equipment as they learn life skills instead. Teacher Alison Rowling said the positive opportunities of the program were endless. “We play lots of good games
in the bush which has been great for developing strong friendships,” she said. “It’s also been good for their language skills because they are communicating more. “It has helped their physical development through climbing trees and tackling different terrains. “They are more observant about nature and link this with the outside world. Bush Kindy has been a fantastic learning opportunity for the children in that it has provided something different.” Director of Little Rascals Lorna McMahon said they have
students from throughout the Southern Downs. “While a large percentage of our enrolments are from Killarney, we also have children enrolled from Yangan, Legume and Warwick.” Mrs McMahon and Mrs Rowling are travelling to Melbourne at the end of the month to visit Westgarth Bush Kinder to talk to their teachers, educators and families about this great program and see firsthand how they blend it in to their curriculum. For more information regarding enrolments phone 4664 1800.
WITH the increasing problem of childhood and adult obesity in Australia, Free Range Kids Child Care has a focus on promoting good eating and exercise habits at an early age that will carry through to a child’s adult life. At Free Range Kids, staff believe children need fresh air, exercise and physical activity to keep their bodies and minds fit and healthy. Free Range children are encouraged to be physically active and are provided with an environment to promote this lifestyle. The centres have minimal media or technological activities for children because Free Range believes children can learn just as well from spending active time outdoors. In particular, the Junior Farmers’ Program encourages participation from all groups in the centre to learn from the world around them outdoors. The objective of the program is for children to develop their skills through the management of a small farm, for children to demonstrate an understanding about caring for the natural environment, and for children to have an awareness of the need to sustain farming as a natural
Free Range children enjoying activities. resource for the community in the future. Children will have the opportunity to care for and learn about farm animals and what they mean to the environment and will be able to assist staff in feeding chickens and collecting their eggs. They also participate in the centre’s veggie garden by preparing the plot, sowing seeds, watering, fertilizing produce, weeding and harvesting the crop.
Staff will assist and guide children through this process. Produce will be used in the kitchen for children’s meals which are provided in the centre. This helps children understand where their food comes from and will help them to make healthy food choices throughout their lives. For bookings contact Jodie on (07) 4684 3685 of visit Free Range Kids Child Care at 63 Barrawell Street, Wallangarra.

Pirate performance THE School of Total Education is set to present The Pirates of Penzance at the school’s Vijayadev Yogendra auditorium this week. The show will be performed on two evenings, Friday and Saturday from 7.30pm. Premiering in America on New Year’s Day 136 years ago, The Pirates of Penzance has since become one of the most iconic and much loved works written by Arthur Sullivan and William Gilbert. “This was their fifth collaboration together, out of a total of 15 - not bad for two gentlemen who did not get along
with each other particularly well!” said senior music teacher at the School of Total Education Colin Alley. “Pirates is full of humour which has not dated. “It is a very funny story with great music and brilliantly written lyrics. “The students are getting right into it and the voices sound first class.” He said the story concerns young apprentice pirate Frederick (played by Ashur Perkins), who on finishing his apprenticeship plans to turn pirate hunter. Complications arise as Frederick discovers the opposite sex and gets caught
on a technicality due to being born on 29 February. Just how old is he? Throw in a kind-hearted pirate king (Kieran Power) a bumbling major general (Jimmy Freeman), the beautiful Mabel (Ellie Douglas) and some frightened policemen and you have the recipe for a hilarious comic operetta. The students are continuing the school’s reputation for quality performances and tickets are available at the school office at 2 Freestone Road, Warwick, or by phoning 4661 2666. Tickets will also be available at the door.
Calling all pirates: arrrr we ready? BONY Mountain Folk Festival present Captain Jack and the pirate crew at Rose City Shopping World, Warwick, 4pm daily from Monday, 19 October until Saturday 24 October. From Tuesday, Norma O’Hara Murphy and friends will open the program, performing her Solid Gold album. The event will give a taste of the Festival and school kids are invited to come and join in every day, to meet Captain Jack, find the hidden treasure, have a sword fight with free entry all week. The Warwick Rodeo Queens will also make appearances at various times. Rainbow FM will conduct live broadcasts, giving out free Rainbow stickers, plus Blazer the Fire Brigade Mascot will also attend.
Pirate princess face painting at Bony Mountain - watch out for her at Rose City.

Silks and sculptures on show THE Artists’ Collective Studio at Tenterfield will hold their next Featured Artist Exhibition, from Friday. The opening night will be held on Friday,16 October at 5.30pm until 8pm (NSW). The exhibition will then continue through to Sunday, 15th November. The collective will feature the work of textile artist Sue Jurd and timber artist Michael Pieper. Sue Jurd is well-known and loved in Tenterfield for both her most beautiful hand dyed scarves and also her framed silk paintings, and this exhibition has both.
Michael Pieper is well-known for his design sculptural, decorative and functional works using natural and repurposed timbers. Sue and Michael have exhibited together for many years at the Art in the Mill art show in Ballandean. All invited to come and celebrate the work of the two artists at the Artists’ Collective Studio in Tenterfield with drinks and nibbles from 5.30pm-8pm. The gallery is then open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10am until 4pm (NSW) and Saturday and Sunday 9am until 3pm.

Homes&Property Real Estate Guide
When presentation counts De-cobweb and dust “Yes an obvious one but how often is this taken for granted,” he said. “Make your home sparkle and the results will speak for themselves.” Painting “If you can spare a tin or two of the same coloured paint to spruce up any scuff marks on the walls that is great - if you can go further then that is even better,” he said “It will add to the freshness. “If there are brightly coloured feature walls than repaint them back to neutral tones.” Neutral tones also for those curtains “The curtains and blinds are normally what stays so replace those signature style curtains and take your beloved soft furnishings with you,” Bevan said. “Again, this will not be your home any more, it is being handed over to someone else - so with that in mind re-create your space with current market savvy colours.” Carpets clean “If there is room in your budget to get your carpets professionally cleaned, then do so,” he said. “This can add life to an otherwise dull floor covering and a de-odorize can give your home a real lift.” Garden care Bevan suggested mowing and trimming all edges as well as getting rid of any weeds, dead branches and leaves. “You want to show your buyer how effortless it is to keep your (their) garden looking great,” he said. “It will also add value to your property. “Some bright flowering plants are also a nice touch.”
Outside decks and concreted areas “Use a high pressure washer to remove any grime and dirt to present the deck and concrete areas fresh and clean,” Bevan said. “Oil the decks and you are almost there.” Finally, don’t forget the garage “If you can’t bear to throw anything away or you have had that garage sale already and there is still a lot stored here, go back to the neat and tidy rule,” he said.
“Orderly stacks look a lot better than messy mounds. If you are thinking of putting your home on the market to sell make a start by doing these few free and easy steps to present your property at its best,” he said. To arrange for a free market update, phone Mayne Real Estate on 4666 3591 and staff will also be able to discuss how to present a home at its best.

WHEN it comes to putting one of the most valuable assets - a home - on the market for sale, presentation counts, according to Bevan Vanderwolf from Mayne Real Estate in Allora. “As the old saying goes, ‘first impressions count’,” he said. “Adding little finishing touches for no or very little cost except your time and effort will gain interest from potential buyers, aid you with a more timely sale, and get you the best possible price.” “We have a few ideas to get you started.” De-clutter “Having your home looking spacious and uncluttered allows the buyer to envisage where their own furniture will go and how they can enjoy living in the home,” he said “Walls with minimal clutter also aid in that spacious feeling. “Most buyers can, of course, look past your furniture and your memorabilia, however with a little effort you can present your home at its optimal best with no cost to you and it aids you in the eventual packing process. Start this one today.” Neat and tidy “Now with that extra space you have created it is time to tidy,” Bevan said. “It is amazing what a straightening up can do visually for even the fuller household. “If there is a pile of items that you cannot find anywhere else to put or hide then simply straighten them up - and what a difference it can make. “Try it and you will see the difference yourself. “Right down to the most insignificant items like the remote controls - neat and tidy is the order of the day for those open homes and for the photos for marketing.”

★★★★★★★★ ★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20 This is a great week for putting on those finishing touches. Money matters may improve after the weekend. Weekend plans may be cancelled - the reason is legitimate, though not completely understood. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 For health’s sake, make balance your present keyword. Balance work with recreation and a balanced diet. An unexpected expense may be required on Thursday, meaning the delay of a longed-for luxury. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 Messages seem to be weighted with hidden meanings, but only because they really are so simple. This is the weekend for entering contests, attending sports events and taking on a new physical activity. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Expect to be called on to assume a family related obligation, but consider all the implications before committing yourself. This is not the week for shortcuts. Everything taking a bit longer is best. LEO—July 23-August 22 This week you seem unusually clever in financial matters. Still major risks should be avoided as your intuition is weak. News from a distant corner could cheer you and your whole family. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 A phone call from a relative may answer an important question but open up a new area of concern. Don’t get carried away with recent success at the workplace. Your love life brightens by the end of the week. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 The trouble this week is that every problem has two good solutions. The best plan is to aim for long-range success. You are extremely popular Wednesday - Thursday, enjoy the company, but watch out for rich foods. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 You can make important gains now, provided you resist impulsive moves. Your popularity dips before the weekend, but by Sunday you are the top name on the social roster. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 A barter system could be the answer to decrease costs. A family deadlock is broken by the weekend. Simplicity is the key this week in everything you do, including your dress.

Allora car boot sale ALLORA State School will be putting on a car boot sale next month and wants the Southern Downs community to hop on board. The Allora State School P&C Association will be organising the sale, to be held on Sunday 15 November. They are encouraging residents to have a spring clean of their cupboards, wardrobes and sheds and turn their unwanted goods into some additional dollars in the leadup to Christmas. Car boot sale co-ordinator Andrew Dunn said the inaugural event was part of the Allora State School’s efforts to build a covered area for the kids. “The P&C is committed to providing a tiered, landscaped covered area for the students to congregate in hot or wet weather. This is an ongoing commitment and proceeds from the Allora Car Boot Sale will go towards this,” he said. The car boot sale will be held on the school’s soccer ground located at the corner of Darling and Raff Streets from 9am to noon on the day. Sites will be available from $20 per car. For more information or to request a site registration form, please phone 0408 845 549 or email alloracarbootsale@outlook. com

CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Be more careful in choosing words and phrases. If you are not prepared with the facts, embarassment could follow. Friday favours financial gains. The weekend features outstanding entertainment. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 The beginning of this week is frantic. Plans are rearranged and it seems that cancellations are unavoidable - but dig for a solution and you will find it. Children are in the picture on the weekend and you will enjoy their sense of humour immensely. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Don’t be secretive or coy with your worries. It’s easy to be accident prone in the work environment so take a more relaxed approach. There should be some financial gains after the weekend. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK The first impression you present is a lasting one. You are determined, supportive, reliable. ambitious and slightly aloof. In all realms - romance, finance and friendship, there are a lot of options in the months ahead. It’s your choice.
Budding boxing star rises By DANE LILLINGSTONE LOCAL boxing trainer Peter Liesegang, from Warwick Boxing Club, is adamant he is witnessing the beginning of a future boxing star. Jake Thomson is only 22 but Peter thinks he is destined for big things in the boxing world. “I honestly think he’s got a professional career ahead of him,” Peter said. Jake has only had three fights but he’s shown enough to suggest to Peter he has a long
career ahead of him. Peter expects Jake to fight again in a fortnight. “He won and he won well,” Peter said. On Saturday night, he avenged a previous split-decision loss to 27-year-old Jason Danaher by decisively winning the rematch in a unanimous decision and forcing an eight count from the referee in the third round. The win takes his amateur record to 2-1. He will be surrounded by a wealth of experi-
ence if he does pursue a professional career. Peter is a former professional boxer, having his first fight at 12 years old and racking up 150 amateur fights by the time he was 17 before making the switch to professional at 22. One of his brothers was at one point ranked number one in the country. Peter said he couldn’t do it without his sparring partners ex-professional Chris Fox and current professional boxer Kyle ‘Tank’ Teer.

Memorable Wallabies win The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
THE Wallabies showed real grit and determination in their win over the Welsh last Sunday morning. For all those who were up early to watch the game, it certainly was a nail-biting affair with Australia forced to defend their line with only 13 players. In one of their best performances in recent times, the Wallabies won plenty of admirers with their gutsy win. The Wallabies were under the pump, having being penalised 12 times in a game which saw Will Genia and Dean Mumm sent to the sin bin. The Wallabies managed to hold on and escape with a memorable win, but their coach concedes they were lucky and cannot afford such costly mistakes if they are to go all the way in the tournament. David Pocock was fortunate to escape sanction for striking Welsh hooker Scott Baldwin with his knee. The incident could have cost him and the Wallabies their chance at the WW Ellis Cup. The win placed the Wallabies at the top of the “Pool of Death” and they will now play Scotland in the quarter-final contest on Sunday (Monday morning AEDT). Both Pocock and Israel Folau will be racing the clock to be fit for this important clash. Meanwhile, Twickenham has been converted into a little piece of Oz for the Wallabies. Cricket, rock music, AC/DC’s Thunderstruck and Australian flags are beginning to turn Twickenham from a feared venue into Wallaby fortress as the Aussies begin their World Cup charge in earnest. The Wallabies must win the next five games in a row at the ground to be crowned World Cup champions, a winning-streak never achieved by Australian teams. Stephen Larkham organised to have an AC/DC classic play through the ground’s loud speakers at the last training session every week. Players put training on hold and set up a cricket pitch at Twickenham which may never be the same. It might not be home, but the Wallabies are doing their best to make their mark. For fans it will be another early morning Sunday as the World Cup Carnival rolls on. Don’t forget to set your alarm. - Casey FINAL TOUCHES THE committee of the Stanthorpe Jockey Club has been busy in recent weeks putting the final touches on the Armstrong Park facilities in readiness for Saturday’s big Caulfield Cup meeting. The five-event programme has been well supported by owners and trainers, and when nominations closed earlier in the week, 10 horses had been nominated for the Stanthorpe Central Motors Handicap. Despite failing at his last run at the Gold Coast, the Toowoomba-trained Billy Aucash looks to be well placed in the Cup. The Benchmark 55 Country Club Hotel Handicap over the 1200 metre journey has drawn a capacity field of 12 runners. The Tony Sears galloper Wyllie is an interesting runner having won on the track two years ago. The MJ Cleaners/ Stanthorpe Painting Services Maiden has also attracted a capacity field. Club secretary Jill Brunckhorst said earlier in the week the response to the annual Stanthorpe race meeting had once again been enormous. We have good bookings for seating in the marquee and lunches, and I am still fielding inquiries, Mrs Brunckhorst said. Courtesy buses will once again ferry racegoers to and from the course and organisers urge patrons to take full advantage of the service which will run from the Country Club Hotel. Patrons are reminded that they are not permitted to take their own alcohol on to the course. The Cup day meeting is family friendly and
No 4, French Song, ridden by S. Bogenhuber crosses the line first in race 3 at Allman Park on Saturday. children will be well catered for. The Fashions on the Field is once again expected to be a hotly contested event. The 2016 Apple and Grape Young Ambassador entrants will be officially introduced to the public during the course of the afternoon. There will be plenty of on course bookmakers betting on local and southern events. With the forecast of a fine day, and fast track all looks to be on target for another bumper meeting at Armstrong Park all punters need now are winners. It looks hard to go past the fancied imported runners in the Caulfield Cup. They come into the race with good form and well weighted. Jockey James Macdonald is enjoying a purple patch of form and rides the well-credentialed Hauraki. I will probably be sticking with Ollie (Damien Oliver) and the $15 chance Snow Sky. BUSY CARNIVAL SCHEDULE SOCIAL bowlers took to the greens at the Summit Bowls club last weekend, but there has been plenty of activity in and around the club as final preparations are made for the upcoming busy carnival schedule. In Social games on Saturday afternoon, Atilio Zamprogno and Ray Spiller proved no match for Andy White and P. Parker, going down 27-18. P. Davis and Eliseo Zamprogno defeated Eddie Zanatta and Brian Wilmot 20-13. In other games, R. Parker, Keith Mungall and Rob Capelli proved too strong for Brian Brown, Graham Rubie and Michael Sweeney 20-9. Errol Moss and his team worked hard and did a great job on the bottom green. In preparation for the upcoming carnival events, the club held a well-attended and fruitful working bee last Sunday. The club is now looking very smick just in time for the annual Three Bowl Triples Carnival this weekend and the always popular Apple Blossom Carnival the following weekend. A reminder to all bowlers that it is possible to play on either or both days of the Apple Blossom Carnival. The carnival is one of the biggest events on the Summit Club’s calendar and always attracts a large number of visiting bowlers from other clubs. Local players are asked to nominate their teams this week to avoid disappointment. NO GOAT ON THE TRACK BELYING his years and unfortunate name Toowoomba galloper Billy Goat notched up his second Country Cup victory in as many months last Saturday with a narrow win in the Warwick Credit Union Warwick Cup over the 1500m journey at Allman Park. Starting at the good odds of $8, the winner drew the outside alley in the 13-horse field and was well ridden by apprentice Brendon Newport. Newport judged the race perfectly, saving his horse for one last crack at the leaders collaring top weight Skip Town on the line to win by a

The win gave apprentice Brendon Newport backto-back wins in the event. He rode Manfred the Man to victory in last year’s Cup. After successes in the Dalby and Warwick Cups, connections of the seven-year-old gelding will now consider a start in the Roma Cup in November. The Cup was the highlight of the seven-event programme which attracted good fields. The meeting opened with the running of the Warwick Hotel Maiden Handicap over 1350 metres and was won by the Ipswich-trained Sharp Ratio starting at the good odds of $13. The fiveyear-old mare won by a length from the more fancied Carnecar and favourite Shockwave. The Hutchinson Quarries class 1 Handicap gave Warwick-trainer Norm Hilton the first of two winners. With claiming apprentice Les Tilley on board, the Hilton-trained Tani Tei En started $1.60 favourite and showed his liking for his home track with a classy win over Smincha ($21). The pair also combined later in the day to win the final event on the programme, the Fraser’s Livestock Transport Warwick Newmarket (1100m) with Had Me at Hello. Starting favourite in the race, the five- year-old mare made it four starts at the track and distance for four wins beating Dontcryargentia and Blooded. In the Warwick Veterinary Clinic QTIS ThreeYears-Old Maiden Handicap over 1100 metres, the locally bred Court Command filly French Song saluted for the Nolan Family. It was only the fifth start for the Raheen-bred three-year-old filly which is trained in Toowoomba by Shane Iverson. She was well ridden by leading Toowoomba rider Skye Bogenhuber and looked impressive, beating Memphis Girl and Raw Deal. Beaudesert visitor Mount Perry started at the good odds of $12 and saluted in the Blue Chip Accounting Class One Handicap for the Harvey
connections. The winner was ridden by Fiona Jervis and trained by Mark Palmer. The fifth event was another good result for bookmakers when $9 chance Sherbet defeated locally trained galloper Ollie’s Run Riot and the Toowoomba-trained Gold Deal. Race Club officials were delighted with success of the Cup day which has been many months in the planning. A big crowd enjoyed the Cup meeting in perfect conditions. RSL OPEN INNINGS WITH WIN WINNERS of last season’s Stanthorpe Cricket Association premiership, RSL opened their 2015/2016 innings with a sound win over Wanderers. Both sides were at a slight disadvantage with both teams missing key players for the season opener. RSL elected to bat first after winning the toss. On an unpredictable wicket at CF White Oval, Wanderers contained the premiers to a gettable total of 195, dismissing the premiers in the 39th over. Ross Lupton starred last season for RSL with bat and ball, and on Saturday began the new season in fine form, top scoring with 65 before he was caught and bowled by Tim Harslett. There were plenty of loose balls with Wanderers notching up 45 extras which added significantly to RSL’s total. Playing in their first senior fixtures, youngsters Josh Crestani Brock Patti and Harry Williams all bowled well, snaring some handy wickets. Between them, the trio dismissed Todd Brady, Duane Lihou and J. Wren without troubling the scorers. Wanderers needed something special from their opening partnership of Hill and Harslett, however Ross Lupton had Hill caught for a duck. Harslett and Drayton were the only two batsmen to reach the 20s as Wanderers capitulated for only 94 in the 28th over. Anthony Di Bella led the strong RSL bowling attack, taking four wickets in an impressive opening performance. HERITAGE PINK THE Heritage Bank sponsored “Pink” event at the Stanthorpe Golf club last Saturday was a huge success as members got behind the theme of the day, turning out in all manner of pink to show their support for breast cancer research. Following the day’s play, the club was able to present Sonya Caslick of the Heritage Bank with a tidy donation for the cause. Inglewood visitor John Slack was the clear winner of the event returning a score of 47 points. Kev Rowling and Lyle Bryant both returned scores of 42 points. Kev Rowling eventually got the nod and took out the runners-up spot. Lyn Ludlow took out the Ladies event with a score of 43. Graham Tonkin picked up the “Best Dressed” Award for his attention to detail in the way he presented his buggy for the day and dressed for the occasion. Ian Harvey who picked up the award for the “most Colourful” was among a number to receive encouragement awards. Things returned to normal on Sunday for the annual mixed foursome championships played over 27 holes. The father-daughter team of Rob and Hannah Reeves scored 115 shots to ensure their names were added to the trophy. The team of Angelo Maugeri and Margie Locke had the best nett score of the day. Their win the narrowest of the day - only a quarter of a point. This week there are sure to be plenty of golfers trading the clubs for betting tickets on Saturday with the running of the Stanthorpe Central Motors Cup. For the dedicated golfers, the club is holding a single stableford competition playing for a club trophy. Tee off will be from 11.30am, and there may be a rolling starter in the box this week. There are some significant events just around the corner including the Stanthorpe Open which will be played on 24 and 25 October. The time sheet for Sunday’s single event is now full and any new names will go on to a reserve list. There could be a few spots remaining for the 4BBB on Saturday but you will need to get in quick and get your name on the sheet. The club greatly values the continued sponsorship of Maddie’s Gift Gallery for the Open weekend. A relationship that has been longing for many years. The City Club Toowoomba has also been another supporter of the event for a number of years throwing their support behind not only Stanthorpe club but many of the smaller clubs in the region.

Local Sport CELEBRATING 15 SUCCESSFUL YEARS WARWICK and District Drag Racing will host their 12th Dragfest meeting this weekend. Organisers are hoping for around 200 entries as the club celebrates 15 successful years. The not-for-profit club relies on a large number of volunteers who come from far and wide to help out at the purpose built 20 acres site. The Drag Racing facility is growing in popularity with spectators and competitors and is also used for young driver training and is the host of Operation Drag. This weekend’s feature class is Supercharged Outlaws with some cars producing up to 2800hp. Darryl Woods from Brisbane will be competing in his Sainty Powered Ford Falcon. In the Extreme Sedan Class, Dave Newman is certain to be one driver to watch in his Pontiac. In the Super Sedan Class Ross Costello will drive his EH Ute and in the Modifieds, Sarah Glanville will compete in a modified dragster. The other classes are Radial, Superstreet, Nostalgia, Street, Modified Bike, Street Bike and Jnr Dragster. Dragfest starts at 10am each day. Bring your car along on Saturday and enter in the Car Show between 10am and 3pm. WINNING ROUND FOR McMILLAN BRENDAN McMillan shot a nice round in to take a win in the single stableford competition at Wallangarra Golf course last Saturday. Taking out the minor placings were Andrew Thompson and Kevin Williams. Investigations are continuing around the mystery surrounding the fate of the pin shots on offer last weekend. Not one of the pins on offer was won. This weekend organisers have pencilled in a stroke event for Saturday which will be followed by the 36 hole foursome competition on Sunday. A reminder that tee off time on Sunday is 9am. MATTHEWS WINS RUMBLE ALLAN Matthews (20) scored a one-point win over runner-up David Routh (19) in last week’s Red Rooster Rumble. Collecting run down balls were Laurie King, Brett Donovan and, Carol Brandon (18), and Gordon McKeen (17). Pins at 11, 13 and 16 went to David Routh, Brett Donovan and Allan Matthews respectively. Winner of Saturday’s single stableford sponsored by B&K Motors was Peter Tomkins with 43 points. Runner-up was Leon Sticklen on 41 points (countback). Run down balls went to Phil McEvoy 41, Henry Kelly 40, Neil Moore 38, Trevor Rock 38, Nick Tomkins 38, Viv Roser 37, John Brack 37. Pins to Graham Clark 5, Ben Tomkins 7, Leon Sticklen 9, Mal Galloway 11, Neil Glen 13, Geoff Hinze 16. COWBOYS GOLF DAY POPULAR A BIG field took to the fairways for the popular annual Cowboys Golf day in Warwick last Saturday. Winner best gross with 61 off the stick was the team of Jamie Saunders, Kris McLennan, Danny Cox and Brad Rose. Runner-up with 62.50 was team Ben Brownlie Scott Beard, Donald Miller and Tim Doyle. The Best Nett winners were Matthew Penn, Rob Easy, Leon Sticklen and Ethan Sticklen with a score of 51.25. Runner-up best nett with 52.75
played Joy Newman and scored an 18-13 win. Grace Howard and Heather Widderick were defeated 17-13 by Andrea Denkewitz. Pat Schnoor pegged out with 26 in her game against Val Richardson 17. Short games were the order of the day for hoop runners last Wednesday in the unexpected and resulted in some very close results. Shirley Page and Elaine Brown scored seven hoops to win a close game against Val Fancourt and Liz Elway. Val nailed a jump shot while Shirley scored a hole in one and top scored with four hoops. In the other group, Teresa Pyne played two balls against Shirley Evans and Bill Golding. Teresa scored seven hoops to her opponents six. A reminder to all that play in all games will commence at 8.30am from this week. WATTS A WINNER BOB Watts had an excellent round at Sporters last Sunday and claimed a win over runner-up Rowan Anderson. The run-downs went to Mick Doorley and Aaron Simmers. Paul Armstrong took out the best gross and also claimed the Pro Pin. Fran Dickens picked up the pin shot at 12 and Angelo Doorley was spot on at 17. The meat tray winners were Paul Byrnes and Woggie. A reminder to all golfers to note the Ball Ambrose fund-raising day on Sunday 22 November for Apple and Grape Ambassador Amanda McCosker. Organisers have a great day planned and there will be some great prizes up for grabs in addition to a Multi Draw Raffle. This Sunday however it is business as usual and Sporters will tee of between 8am and 8.30am. SHAKY START FOR TENTERFIELD TENTERFIELD got off to a shaky start at their first appearance in the Stanthorpe Cricket Association competition for over a decade when they played Souths last Saturday on Sheahan Oval.
Souths won the toss and sent the visitors in. After an opening partnership of 38 between Fowler and Austin, Tenterfield crumbled to be all out for 106. Once again some loose bowling added 34 to the Tenterfield score. A highlight of the Souths innings in the field was the catching of Tim Bonner who combined with Lanza and Furness to take three catches. Tom Furness picked up three wickets. In reply, Souths made short work of the total. They reached the required 107 runs for the loss of only one wicket. Ben Staley smashed a quick fire 34 and retired. His opening partner fell on 16 bowled Austin caught Martin. The father-son Lanza combination took little time to wrap up the remaining runs to give Souths an easy win in round one of the competition. This weekend, games have been rescheduled to fit in and around the big Stanthorpe Race Day. Wanderers and Valleys will play on Friday night and the remaining game between RSL and Souths will be played on a date yet to be advised. STRONG START FOR PREMIERS ROUND two of the Warwick Cricket season saw the 2014/’15 grand finalists Maryvale and Wheatvale go head to head at Slade Park. Last season’s premiers Maryvale looked to be in great touch. Wicketkeeper Pat Bourke continues his good form, and in last weekend’s catches took three catches, had one stumping and then added 54 runs with the bat as Maryvale notched up a good win. Wheatvale were not without their chances after Ryan Collins opened the innings with a classy 67 before he was dismissed by a good catch off the bowling of Josh Ryan. The loss of Collins and Paul Cantwell with the score at 97 heralded trouble for Wheatvale. They collapsed to be all out for the addition of only another 31 runs after some fine bowling from the Maryvale attack. Walker took 3/21 from 8.4 over while Michael Bourke claimed two early wickets. Despite losing the early wicket of Will Gordon (bowled Cantwell) the father-son team of Kevin and Pat Bourke steered the premiers to a decisive four-wicket victory. Inglewood hosted Allora on Sunday, and with first use of the wicket scored 7/265. Inglewood could only manage 160 in reply, giving the visitors a good win. In Saturday’s fixture game, Railway Hotel played Railway Hotel Rascals at Allora. Railway Hotel gave their opponents plenty to chase when they posted a score of 216, thanks to some fine batting from Tom Morris, 74, and Brad Johnson, 69. Sovereign Animals bowler Ben Ngaia once again got among the wickets taking another three wickets last weekend. Unfortunately, Animals were not able to rise to the challenge and were dismissed for a paltry 75. Chris Baker was the standout performer contributing 40 of the 75-run total. After a good session with the bat, Tom Morris took 3/11 with the ball.

All Stanthorpe members played with a visitor and relished the chance to learn different Gateball techniques and enjoy the networking opportunities. The association games were played on the croquet court in the morning while golf croquet was played on the adjacent Stanthorpe bowling green. We reversed the games in the afternoon, finishing with all players joining up for afternoon tea. The friendship day was the culmination of a busy week. Keith McLeod from the Gold Coast joined the group on Thursday afternoon, returning on Friday morning to give the Gateballers helpful and informative pointers. McLeod is an experienced and excellent tutor and his advice is sure to prove valuable to all players. Association croquet was well attended last week, Margaret Dickenson and Effey Russell
