A NEW Zealand airline has emerged as the strongest contender yet to begin international flights to Avalon Airport, its chief has revealed. And a regional shuttle to Canberra was also a strong possibility, Justin Giddings told a Geelong Business Network breakfast yesterday. Mr Giddings revealed Avalon was in negotiations with three international airlines, with an Asian carrier also a “reasonable chance”. “We’re on the verge of achieving an international airline for Avalon and since firming up Jetstar we’ve seen a lot more international interest,” he said. “New Zealand would be a very good service, a really good inbound feed for Geelong. Likewise a feed into Singapore or Kuala Lumpur would be a good market for us. “We’re most determined to achieve an international passenger development because it will draw more domestic flights. “Passengers need to be able to fly into Avalon and go international, plus connecting flights offer higher yields. “It won’t happen within a year but probably within two years. We’re in strong discussions with the Victorian Government at the moment on this.”

The revelations follow a recent $200,000 facilities upgrade in the terminal along with approval of the airport’s master plan. Mr Giddings said further improvements to the airport entrance would begin “within days”. Avalon was also in discussions with its newest airline, regional service Jetgo, about establishing a shuttle service to Canberra. “The Jetgo service from Dubbo will most likely move to Essendon when they get a few issues worked out but we’re talking to them about other destinations, like Canberra, using their 36-seater fully-pressurised jet. “A smaller aircraft shuttle two or three times a week to Canberra will be an important opportunity for Avalon.” Continued page 5

THE STINK only gets worse at Bannockburn over its rubbish collection services, or lack thereof. Double Take readers might remember the trouble Golden Plains Shire’s chief found himself in when a current affairs TV crew hounded him over ratepayer complaints about rubbish and recycling. Now it’s turned into a state Upper House issue, with Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay joining the baying fray yesterday. He turned up the heat - it was already 32C in Bannockburn, co-incidentally - by asking how the shire could justify cutting back collections to fortnightly while paying top staff six-figure salaries and running a fleet of 53 vehicles. The result was “real health problem” from piled-up rubbish, Mr Ramsay said. Maybe the shire needs a new slogan: Golden Plains - bin there, haven’t done that.

The storages are now more than 20 per cent below the same time last year, with the traditional spring downpours failing to materialise. Whether or not Barwon Water might soon ratchet

up restrictions is shaping as a rather, er, dry argument. PATRONS were enjoying a quality evening meal at The Gordon’s Davidson Restaurant in Geelong midweek, with top service from the trainees. Then an evacuation signal caused minor concern but the garbled instruction from the public address system could well have been in an unfamiliar language, as nobody understood a word. The young staff, however, were well-drilled and set an example by directing others and moving to the muster point. Maybe they’re multi-lingual as well. CAUSING just as much alarm this week as The Gordon’s restaurant was Mayor Darryn Lyons’ latest wardrobe malfunction. The uptight and politically opposed were quick to condemn his choice of Oktoberfest T-shirt for its image of a naked Madonna hitchhiking with the slogan: ’Gas, grass or ass, nobody rides for free’. Trades Hall called a rally to demand his resignation but could only muster around 30 die-hards. Then a Facebook call for a counter rally produced, as far as the Indy could tell, only two apparently inebriated malingerers at its chosen venue. Maybe Geelong people have better things to do than protest T-shirts.

Fracking permit faces petition, driller angry ronmental” areas of Surf Coast Shire. “The massive exploration zone covers areas of significant population growth and could put residents, local communities, farmland and our local environment at risk,” Mr Katos said. “Large-scale gas industry and hydraulic fracking should not be part of our shire and may put at risk agriculture, tourism and water resources. “No exploration company would willingly relinquish a licence. “Of course they want it rolled over because it’s a long-term speculative investment. “Even though Lakes Oil say they’re not interested at the moment,
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN ONLINE petition has been launched to urge the State Government to refuse any time extension for an onshore gas exploration permit covering Highton to Anglesea. Lakes Oil’s PEP 163 permit runs out on Sunday, although a Government moratorium on fracking is in place until the completion of a parliamentary inquiry into onshore gas. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos initiated the petition saying the Andrews government was “likely” to extend the permit, allowing drilling for unconventional gas in “sensitive envi-
with an improvement in technology or gas price increases they could soon become interested again.” Mr Katos urged residents to sign his online petition against drilling in the area. Lakes Oil chairman Robert Annells slammed the petition as a dangerous precedent that risked driving industry out of the state. Companies applied for permits for mining and petroleum with a clear intent to explore on the terms of the permit, he said. “To change the rules halfway through is commonly called sovereign risk and if you do that you run the risk
of driving industry out of the state. “The Government has got a monitor on drilling as well as an inquiry into fracking and unconventional gas. “Parliament has put in place an independent judge, so why not wait until we see what they say, otherwise you’re usurping the power of the body put in place by the parliament. “It just doesn’t make sense to me. “We can’t move on any of our permits with the moratorium and we have no intention to do anything in the short term.” The petition is at andrewkatos. com.au/StopPep163.

Geelong show begins with attractions old and new By PAUL MILLAR A YEAR after the Eureka rebellion, Geelong began putting on its own show, capturing visitors with traditional pursuits alongside everchanging attractions to keep up with the times. Royal Geelong Show has been operating since 1855 but to organisers it’s still going from strength to strength. Justine Chisholm said more than 100,000 visitors would make their way to the showgrounds for this year’s four-day carnival, with patron-
age growing each year. Geelong’s economy would receive a major injection from the show as more people travelled in from the other side of Melbourne and interstate, she said. “We’re well up on the horse entries, with 3500 registered (2800 last year), plus the dairy and sheep - it’s going through the roof.” Ms Chisholm said organisers were constantly working on innovative ideas as well as the traditional drawcards to keep the show fresh and inviting.
They had spiced up the event this year with acrobatic performers from Cirque Africa putting on their own show, she said. “We’re always changing things, mixing it up. Everything gets crammed in over four days yet we have a venue that has the space, it fits in really well.” Ms Chisholm said one of the new attractions this year was a 21-metre long fishing tank for experts to teach visitors casting techniques to land the big one. The show began yesterday and finishes Sunday.
Meanwhile, Consumer Affairs Victoria said officers would attend today to conduct product safety inspections of showbags. “The safety of Victorian children is paramount, which is why we enforce tough safety compliance standards on all toys sold in showbags,” a spokeswoman said. “Each year Consumer Affairs Victoria inspects thousands of toys sold at the show and families can rest much easier knowing dangerous products are removed or modified before they see the light of day.”

NZ target of Avalon From page 1 Mr Giddings said loads for established tenant Jetstar were strong, with a new daily Gold Coast return service beginning on 26 October. “Jetstar will shortly announce a third destination. I think I know what it will be - I can’t say yet - but it’s a very good destination for us from an inbound perspective. “We want to have one or two services to every major capital around Australia in the next few years. “We want to get the Brisbane flight back, we want to get a Perth service and Adelaide is a really good market for us.

Geelong NBN work:
‘Miss’ Eleni’s biggest wish
Fast-track, expansion for rollout
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LEOPOLD’S Eleni Anastasopoulos has reached the national final of Miss Australia International 2016, with judging in Sydney on 7 November. Ms Anastasopoulos said she entered mainly as a vehicle to continue her community work, with her fundraising efforts focussed on Make A Wish Foundation. “It’s about working with the community and fund-raising more than anything, she said. “It’s less about the person and more about making a difference. Ms Anastasopoulos also reached the finals of Australia’s Miss Teen Galaxy in 2014 after raising $14,000 for Make A Wish. “I like to do a different quest each year and learn different skills and meet different people, she said. Her final fund-raiser before judging will be a High Tea, 2pm Sunday, at Capri Receptions, North Geelong. The former Belmont High School student plans to use her pageant experience to enter the fashion industry.
MORE than 136,000 premises across Geelong will have access to superfast broadband by March 2017 under an accelerated three-year rollout of the National Broadband Network. All the newly announced connections will be fibre to the node, with the existing copper telephone network connecting to homes and businesses. Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson hailed the announcement as fantastic news. “After my continued strong advocacy on behalf of residents, the rollout has been extended to cover much of Geelong’s CBD and suburbs, Ms Henderson said. “This is a great result (that) will see many more residents have access to superfast NBN broadband. This is in contrast to the former Labor Government, which completely left off Geelong’s southern suburbs from its three-year rollout. “These locations announced today are in addition to the many other locations in the fixed wireless NBN rollout across the Corangamite and Greater Geelong regions. Ms Henderson said the announcement was a significant step forward for the NBN as it worked to speed up the rollout and make the build as cost-efficient as possible.
MODERN MISS: Pageant finalist Eleni Anastasopoulos. 145556 Picture: REG RYAN
“The Coalition Government understands that internet access is important for our community and will transform education, health care and other critical online services. “Rollout progress under Labor was slow and costly. The NBN only managed to connect 51,000 premises to its networks during the previous term of government. “In contrast, the Coalition Government recognises that consumers want fast broadband as soon as possible. “Services over the NBN will allow families to stream movies, surf the web, and complete schoolwork online. Businesses will also benefit from the higher bandwidth available. “The plan demonstrates the Coalition’s commitment to rural and regional Australia in closing the digital divide. Ms Henderson said nationwide more than 1.3 million homes and businesses could order an NBN service while around 600,000 premises already had an active connection. Key Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula towns will be rolled out by February, with Bannockburn and Winchelsea to follow in March. Suburbs from Leopold to Lara will have a rollout by September, with the 3216 postcode to be completed by March 2017.

Local tears for gutted church By PAUL MILLAR
1200282-KK39-15
ABLAZE: The church in flames.
PROBE: Investigators at the scene on Wednesday. Picture: REG RYAN
LOCALS young and old wept in the street when an intended day of celebration turned into their Ash Wednesday as Bannockburn’s historic church went up in flames. Residents woke to the smell of smoke on Wednesday morning when the church of St John the Evangelist was gutted the same day children were to gather for a sacrament of reconciliation. In another cruel coincidence, a new priest was due to arrive the same day that precious religious artefacts were scorched. Fire crews arrived at the weatherboard church on High Street about 4.15am to find it engulfed in flames. CFA incident controller Barry Planner said crews spent an hour bringing the blaze under control. “This church was over 100 years old and crews did an excellent job of containing the fire,” he said. Four trucks from Corio, Lethbridge and Bannockburn attended. Police declared the site an overnight crime scene, with investigators combing the ruins during the day. Parish co-ordinator Diane Ritchie said the church was part of Bannockburn’s character. “It’s a landmark, it’s part of the town’s history. We’ve had people here all day crying, people are really upset,” Ms Ritchie said. “We had 22 children who were going to take the sacrament of confirmation today. “It’s so significant. We have families that were married here, burials – the people are devastated. “There were books, vessels, the chalice, sentimental things like statues that were donated by families, memories; hopefully all the hosts are intact." Churchgoers will have to attend Inverleigh’s Sacred Heart on Sunday for Mass. Ms Richie said Bannockburn priest Herman Licayan was due to return to the Philippines on 11 November after six years at the parish. “The new priest is due to arrive today, it’s just awful,”she said. The arson squad is investigating.

State gaffe ‘behind koala cull’ By PAUL MILLAR AN EMBARRASSING gaffe has led to culling of koalas at Cape Otway, according to a conservation group. Australian Koala Foundation said the state had planted 93,000 trees of the wrong species in an “ill-informed attempt“ to protect starving koalas. Foundation chief Deborah Tabart said neither of the two kinds of eucalypt planted since
2012 suited the koalas or the region. “There are hundreds of different tree species that koalas eat and their diet varies greatly from one region to the next,” Ms Tabart said. “I’d be embarrassed if I was the person who approved the planting of the wrong tree species.” Ms Tabart blamed a lack of ecological expertise, both now and in the past.
“There are issues, huge issues, with the trees and these issues are being clouded by the government culling koalas under the guise of welfare. “Thirty years ago these koalas were moved to Cape Otway for tourism purposes. “They shouldn’t have been because the preferred trees for Victorian koalas do not grow well on these soils. “Basically, these koalas have been stuck eating the wrong trees
for 30 years and they’re sick and the trees are sick. Worse still, 93,000 of the same trees have been planted that cannot possibly fix the problem.” Conservation Ecology Centre, which has state and commonwealth support, has been conducting revegetation work at Cape Otway. The centre has co-ordinated revegetation, focusing on private land. A Department of Environ-
ment, Land, Water and Planning spokesman said the work was undertaken across 10 private land holdings. “This included 40 hectares of revegetation work on former pasture land as well as 50ha of restoration planting in areas where the coastal manna gum canopy has been over-browsed by koalas,” he said. “These plantings include a range of native plant species that are endemic to, and likely to
thrive on, Cape Otway’s sandy soils. “Many koalas at Cape Otway are able to access the Great Otway National Park, which has extensive stands of several other known koala food tree species but many are reluctant to move from their favoured coastal manna gum trees.” The state recently culled more than 50 koalas at the cape amid concerns for their health and claims of overpopulation.

AN ABC-TV commissioned series based on John Marsden's novel Tomorrow, When the War Began filmed scenes around Barwon Heads bridge this week. Ambience Entertainment’s six-part drama has financing from the ABC, Screen Australia, Film Victoria and Ingenious Investments. The television adaptation follows a 2010 theatrical release. ABC head of children’s TV Deirdre Brennan said the series would bring Marsden’s powerful story to life within a new television format. “Tomorrow, When the War Began has connected to so many Australians since the book was first published in 1993,” she said. “More than 3 million copies later, these are characters we know and love - the dilemmas they face are compelling and have never been more relevant.” The high-production, dramatic-action series is set amid an invasion of Australia, with a group of teenage friends returning from a remote camping trip only to find themselves thrust into the middle of a war no one saw coming. The group overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds and discovers that in order to save the things they hold most precious they must be prepared to sacrifice everything.

Road safety just child’s play at Ocean Grove ROAD safety has literally become child’s play at Ocean Grove. The town’s toy library and Boorai family centre have used a grant to buy educational toys for lessons about staying safe around roads and traffic. The grant was a “fantastic” Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) initiative, said councillor Kylie Fisher.

The toy library used the $3000 to buy roadwork signs, a pedestrian crossing, trikes, dress-ups and Leggo for safety messages. The main lessons will be teaching children to look in all directions for oncoming vehicles and working out when to safely cross roads. The toys will be available to children at-

Mr Allwood, of no fixed abode, then allegedly attended a pharmacy at Labuan Square, Norlane, almost an hour later and stole cash and drugs from staff at gunpoint. Police said the ute was later recovered in Norlane about 5.50pm.

THE growing popularity of sustainability on the Surf Coast has spawned a new event, Build Grow Live. Surf Coast Energy Group (SCEG) and Danawa Community Garden have organised the event as a break from traditional sustainable house days. SCEG president Pat Onesta said the event would “celebrate the wealth of sustainable living happening in Torquay and the surrounding region”. The event would showcase three professionally designed “eco residences”, Freshwater Creek Free Range Egg Farm and Surf Coast Shire’s civic precinct, he said. Spring Creek Reserve’s Danawa Community Garden would host stalls and workshops as part of the event. “We wanted to bring a more holistic aspect to the event by expanding sustainable house day to include local food growing and production,” Mr Onesta said. “You’ll be able to find out first-hand how some of the amazing foods grown in the region are produced with presentations by the growers and makers, learn the 10 steps to an ecological garden and explore a range of stalls showcasing renewable energy, container building, natural building and landscape design. “Stalls selling homemade treats, bush cubby building for the kids, along with food and music are all part of the mix.” All proceeds from the 25 October event would support SCEG and Danawa sustainable events and initiatives. Mr Onesta said more information and tickets were available at sceg.org.au.

ALL TOGETHER NOW: With One Voice Geelong director Kym Dillon and choir members. 145206 Picture: REG RYAN
Geelong choir on song By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A GEELONG community choir hopes to change the world – one song at a time. With One Voice Geelong has been together for six years and now averages 50 singers at its weekly rehearsals – and growing. Conductor Kym Dillon said members came from all walks of life. “The choir links different social groups that wouldn’t necessarily be linked elsewhere,” Mr Dillon said. “Singing breaks down the barriers and enables people to make con-
nections or hang out together that otherwise would never have had that opportunity. “Plus, everyone acts as a support; perhaps someone needs some sympathy or is looking for work.” Mr Dillon said his favourite choir moments were when people who had never before sung in front of an audience did so for the first time. “They're nervous but they're always well supported by being part of a group. They'd never try public speaking but they can sing on stage at Melbourne Town Hall.” The choir will perform at that ven-
ue again in a With One Big Voice concert on 8 November alongside other community and school choirs. A member had suggested With One Voice Geelong should perform Life in a Northern Town as its entry, Mr Dillon said. “That song resonated with the group, given that Geelong has lived through factory closures. It felt relevant for the town.” The choirs are affiliated with Creativity Australia, whose founder, Tania de Jong, said singing made people happier, healthier, smarter and more creative.
“There are a lot of lonely people in our communities. Their isolation leads to anxiety and depression, unemployment and so much more,” Ms de Jong said. “Through singing with other people we break down the barriers between us and build stronger communities. “With One Voice empowers people to care for one another, instead of relying on top-down, siloed, social welfare services. Together, we can change the world.” Readers can watch With One Voice Geelong’s entry at singforgood.org.

By PAUL MILLAR VOLUNTEERS expect a green light in time to re-open Portarlington’s mini-railway for summer’s tourism surge. The Rotary Club of Drysdale ran the popular children’s line from 1999 but mounting costs and fewer volunteers forced operations to halt last December.
Club president Bruce Van Every said Rotary was drawing up an agreement for a volunteer organisation to control the tourist attraction. “Basically, we have an ageing and falling membership base and we couldn’t see our way clear to continuing ... it’s a big commitment to keep it running, Mr Van Every said.
“It will be sad to pass it on but it’s also a good move because the volunteers are keen to take it over and have worked with us previously. A dedicated group of engineers and volunteers built the locomotives over hundreds of hours after constructing the rail line. The kilometre of track includes a platform and railway signals.

Group appeals for servo costs By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A FUND-RAISING appeal will seek to cover the legal costs of a community group that lost its bid to stop a service station development at Dyrsdale. Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association must pay Caltex franchisee Milemaker Petroleum $5500 by 7 December after losing an appeal at Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). The tribunal ordered costs against the not-for-profit association, which had fought Milemaker’s planning permit to build on Jetty Rd, near the twin towns’ main roundabout. Secretary Neil McGuinness said both DCSCA and Victorian
Environment Minister and Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville wrote to Milemaker, asking it to waive the costs as a gesture of goodwill. Mr McGuiness said Milemaker failed to respond. “We accept VCAT’s ruling and we’re resolved to comply with our obligation but we do not have the funds and have launched an appeal.” Mr McGuinness said the association had launched a drive for new members and donations, which should include contact details. “Should Milemaker belatedly agree to waive the costs, DCSCA intends to return all donations and pledges.” Mr McGuinness said the as-
sociation hoped a public meeting begining 7pm Tuesday at SpringDale Neighbourhood Centre would help generate further interest in its plight. “Even with the stress of the service station (appeal) DCSCA has had a productive year with significant progress on several ongoing projects,” he said. “These include a bypass for Drysdale, a fishing jetty for Clifton Springs, funding for the Drysdale Sports Precinct, improvements to Lake Lorne and improved access to the Dell.” Mr McGuiness said guest speaker, City of Greater Geelong senior engineer Ralph Roob, would provide further information on coastal management and Clifton Springs’s jetty.

$1.3m ‘farm’ for jobless, disabled By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN HUMAN services organisation Encompass is planning a $1.3 million training facility at its rural property in Leopold. The multi-purpose shared use training facility will include two new training rooms and a purpose-built training kitchen. Called The Paddock, the facility will enable Encompass Community Services to increase its training services for the long-term unemployed and its National Disability Insurance Scheme clients. Construction manager Baade Harbour Australia has already been engaged and tenders have been called.
Encompass has already raised half of the funds needed from charity Give Where You Live, Perpetual Trustee (Percy Baxter Trust) and Helen MacPherson Smith Trust. A major fundraising event for the new facility will be held at Buckleys on 23 October, celebrating the organisation’s 30th anniversary. Encompass farm co-ordinator Chris Evans said the new facility would open a world of opportunity for the organisation’s clients. “It means we will be able to teach basic life skills so more people, such as those with mental health issues, can become
more independent,” Mr Evans said. “We have people often spending time traveling between the farm and Encompass in Pakington Street, Newtown. “This means much less travel and more time spent on our projects.” The three hectare farm also houses vegetable gardens which provide produce for Bellarine Peninsula customers including Flying Brick Cider Company, chickens coops and a hothouse. The new facility would also be open to community use, Mr Evans said. More information and tickets are available at encompass-cs. org.au.

Huge majority RELAX. ‘OK with shirt’
TOO RUDE OR NOT TOO RUDE: The “offending” T-shirt. Kylie Watts said his apology was unnecessary. “The world has gone completely mad,” she posted. Mona Chahine said the shirt attracted attention only because it was on Cr Lyons. “If he was just some random person would he be dealing with this crap? I think not.”
Rob Baard said Cr Jan Farrell, the first to complain and a regular critic of Cr Lyons, was “fuelling her own agenda”. “Some people fuel fires rather than put them out. Let’s hope the focus is on a better Geelong and not (getting) caught up in someone’s (artistic) opinion.” Sherryn Fitzsimmons asked: “Who cares? “He does the job and didn’t run off crying like the last bloke.” Other media pages carried similar overwhelming responses brushing off the controversy. But Labor State Member for Geelong Christine Couzens wrote to Cr Lyons condeming him for the shirt. “As a community leader, wearing a T-shirt of a naked woman with the caption ‘Gas, grass or ass, no-one rides for free’ is unacceptable,” she wrote in the letter, obtained by the Independent. “There are many of us in the Geelong community who are working hard to change disrespectful attitudes towards girls/ women, particularly in light of the shocking statistics around family violence. To have a community leader, such as the mayor of our city, think that it is acceptable to be seen at a public event wearing this T-shirt is the height of poor judgement and represents misogyny at its worst.” Cr Lyons suggested the attacks were political. “This is not about sexism, this is about ... a personal attack,” he told Channel Seven.

SOCIAL media users have ridiculed controversy over Mayor Darryn Lyons’ Oktoberfest Tshirt. Hundreds of posts on the pages of local media organisations overwhelmingly supported Cr Lyons or dismissed controversy over the shirt, which featured an image of Madonna hitch-hiking naked, from her 1992 coffee table book. Cr Lyons apologised after initial media reports of calls for him to resign, saying he had not read a risque slogan added to the image before wearing the shirt to his Oktoberfest event on the weekend. But almost all comments on the Independent’s Facebook page dismissed the resignation calls. Women denied the T-shirt was “demeaning”. “I think (people) in the media need to get a life. Really, it’s a bloody T-shirt for God’s sake,“ Cazza Frost-Maynard posted. “Look at all the great things he’s done for Geelong. It’s a sad world if we are going to pick on him for a T-shirt.” Aran Johnston found the outrage amusing. “How pathetic. There are more things going on that are far more important than this, like helping the less fortunate.” Lisa Andretti considered Cr Lyons an embarrassment for spending money on flowers and an “overpriced” Christmas tree but didn’t “give a rat’s about his T-shirt”.

Letters Spits on candidate unfair SADLY, our community has more than its fair share of young, disengaged people struggling to find their voice and their place in society but it’s encouraging that young candidates have put their hands up to represent the community in the Kildare ward byelection. How disappointing then to read the letter from Robert Spits in last week’s Independent, unfairly criticising 23-year-old Trent Sullivan for daring to express a view. Mr Spits was wrong to suggest that councillors’ opinions are not taken into account during decisionmaking on issues related to their wards. Mr Sullivan is a young man courageously attempting to step up and represent his community while setting an example to other young people that they too can aspire to leadership roles. Yet before he’s even had a chance to prove himself he’s being bullied into submission. I encourage any young person contemplating running for council or aspiring to a particular job to reach for their goals without fear of ridicule. Most people would not condemn them but pat their backs and congratulate them for their courage and determination. I am proud to have the by-election posters of Mr Sullivan and Stacy Sellars on my fence. Win, lose or draw, I congratulate them and all the candidates for their courage and commitment. UNINTENTIONALLY, Sports Minister John Eren got it in one, saying “many more events will head the way of Geelong when this (stadium) upgrade is complete” (Independent, 9 October). ‘When’ being the operative word, because the impediments remain. Not only does the tail continue to wag the dog with Simonds Stadium, as stage four morphs into stage five the stadium will continue being on song for where Geelong is not at while also short-changing tax and ratepayers tens of millions of dollars above the latest $80 million public-purse contribution. Factoring in Simonds Stadium tenant Geelong Football Club denying local caterers a fair crack at elite Crown
Palladium red-carpet events, doesn’t charity start at home? The supposedly autonomous Kardinia Park Trust, whose composition is without grass-roots or professional, independent representation, is to function in conjunction with City of Greater Geelong, which it replaced. How has the status-quo changed, despite the beat-up? Why can’t, between and during upgrades, Simonds Stadium host music and the arts, which, given the right products, offer an unquantifiable patronage? Why can’t soccer, which has been stymied every time it’s got a gig together, be given roster surety with cricket and rugby? Richard Worland Manifold Heights
Later he congratulated a woman on her “massive t**s”, then asked a group of women: “Who farted, you dirty b******?” The so-called oompah band played a couple of traditional tunes but mostly pop or pap. The lowlight was the 1960s song Delilah, which absolves and romanticises domestic violence. As the afternoon wore on, the MC urged the audience to “get as much booze down as possible”. Oktoberfest was not, as promised, ‘Bavarian culture come to life’. It was an insult to women, the German settlers of Grovedale and their descendants. Our mayor knew exactly what he was doing when he chose to wear a T-shirt depicting a naked female hitchhiker and suggesting a man who gives a woman a lift is entitled to sex. Cr Lyons should take a hike. Christine Brooks Ocean Grove

pre-loved and new, for as little as $1 an item. Shirts, trousers, jeans, shoes and much more. In some cases these charitable concerns are happy to give items away free to the genuinely needy. It is an urban myth that the poor in our society cannot afford decent clothing. It has far more to do with their individual priorities. One cannot help those who will not help themselves. Ladies on a train I WRITE about kind ladies on trains. I went to Watergardens to see Silvers Circus and returned on Sunday. I got on the train at Sunshine but it was packed and all the seats were taken. As I tried to find one, two ladies offered me a seat. The same thing happened when I returned from the Melbourne show when a lady offered me a seat. It all goes to show what nice ladies we have in this state.
IF THE problems we face are not properly diagnosed we will never find any solutions, which seems the case with Islamist extremism. Our leaders seek answers but fail or refuse to understand the core beliefs that drive young men to seek martyrdom. These beliefs are found in the Koran, particularly its Medina verses that, unlike the peaceful Mecca texts, promote violent jihad. The Koran covers two periods: one when Mohammed was without power in Mecca and the other when he ruled from Medina, with the latter revelation taking precedence over the former. Islam needs reforming to be compatible with modernity and for adherents to live peacefully in a pluralistic society. Until then it will never be truly compatible, always seeking the domination projected in its Medina theology. Leaders of Islam in Australia must reject everything incompatible with their assertions that Islam is a religion of peace and use their school system to teach the rejection of all violence toward fellow Moslems, Israel and other democracies. Pastor Frank Lowry Aberdeen St Baptist Church
Unsettling research KEVIN Crough made the false suggestion that fluoride science was settled. Thousands of scientists around the world are addressing harms caused by this toxin. A recent Irish review found over 3500 peer-reviewed papers from 2006 to mid-2014. In 2007 the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) found statistically significant evidence of fluoride causing: endocrine disruption that reduced the age of menarche, a breast cancer risk factor; congenital malformation; goitre; mental retardation; urinary stone disease; osteosarcoma in young males; and Alzheimer’s disease. The NHMRC also quotes a study of 21.8 million Americans that found positive associations between fluoride and various cancers. Geoff Pain, Monbulk

DARRYN Lyons’ T-shirt objectifying women at Oktoberfest Geelong was no accident. It was in keeping with the sexism promoted by his so-called Oktoberfest. I attended, expecting a scaled-down version of Oktoberfests I previously attended in Melbourne; Oompah bands, traditional Bavarian and Austrian food and drink and, of course, plenty of beer. Instead I found beer, cider and a bit of bratwurst. One pavilion played contemporary rock and sold beer, another just offered somewhere to sit and enjoy a schnitzel sandwich and a beer. And then there was the main tent, supposedly representing a beer hall. As the MC conducted a sausage-eating contest for women, he told a contestant: “You’re going to make some man very happy”.

Piles of horror with ‘wedding’ By PAUL MILLAR SOMETHING always goes wrong at a wedding, from the toppled cake to the torn bridal dress. But a forthcoming wedding at Queenscliff’s Vue Grand is likely to leave guests in stitches. Crepe Expectations Productions has drawn on past horror stories true and false and laced them with wicked humour in an interactive show that press-gangs the audience into participation. The unusual production, Weddings With Piles of Elegance, has been specially written for the historic Queenscliff hotel, with guests nudged into primary roles like father of the bride. The show begins with Tony Piles, the host for the evening,

appeal of the night was the involvement and improvisation of the guests. “Whether you like it or not, you’re a part of the show and it’s unexpected - you have no idea what is going to happen and it’s pretty much just chaos for two hours,” Fleet said. “It’s a fully interactive show with physical comedy and be prepared to get caught up in the commotion!” The show opens 20 November, featuring a three-course dinner and drinks for $130 a head. Flett said more information was available from the Vue Grand’s Sarah Horsburgh, phone 5258 1544 or email sarah@vuegrand.com.au

Museum raises the baa with flock THOUSANDS of participants have helped Geelong’s National Wool Museum muster the world’s largest flock of hand-made pompom sheep. The museum thanked “pompom drovers” from around the region, across Victoria and interstate for wrangling 13,652 sheep, smashing the previous UK record of 8998 and surpassing the museum’s target of 10,000.
The record attempt culminated on Sunday when 300-plus visitors from as far away as China joined Shaun the Sheep for a counting of the flock. “Ewe should have seen it,” quipped councillor Andy Richards, who holds council’s arts and culture portfolio. “Counting sheep was never so exciting. This is a Guinness
World Record-breaking event and thousands from across Australia have participated. “Everyone who contributed by making pompoms, gluing on faces and counting the tally are all part of this Australia-wide effort.” The museum said artist-inresidence Melissa Peacock was instrumental in the record after introducing the idea to Geelong.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BYRON Bay singer songwriter Garrett Kato should feel right at home when he plays Torquay tonight, with a similar seaside vibe between the two coastal icons. The Canadian born musician is opening for local Byron mate Pete Murray on his 31-date regional tour, presenting songs from his recently-released album That Low and Lonesome Sound. Kato is jumping straight on the road solo after just completing his first run of September shows with his full band. “Playing solo with just my
guitar is my most comfortable mode,” Kato declares. “I love breaking hearts if I can.” His new single, Headlights, is an anthemic, toe-tapping folk rock anti-love song. “I’ve always loved the idea of anti-love songs and having a large group of people sing along to something other than ‘I love you babe’,” Kato says. The album was two years in the making with Kato recording most songs multiple times. “I just kept adjusting them and tending to them like my garden,” he explains.
The result is a dynamic album full of texture and warmth with Kato’s smooth, dreamy melodies and exquisite harmonies weaving a rich tapestry of storytelling folk gems. Written about Kato’s relocation from Canada to Australia, the songs focus on the journey and personal battles of letting go of a past life, he says. “Some songs have themes which stretch further into my past, but the majority are about my new life and love in Australia… it’s basically a personal diary of manhood and letting go.” Kato plays Torquay Hotel tonight.

IF THE reviews on social media are anything to go by, Sakuratei Japanese Cuisine in Manifold Heights is a gem. The recent addition to Geelong West’s culinary culture has been reviewed as one of the best Japanese restaurants outside Japan. And that’s from well-travelled tourists as well as locals who have discovered the authentic delicacies served with a minimum of fuss. The real strength of Sakuratei is the extensive menu, with everything from soups and entrees, main courses of ramen, udon, bento boxes and curries to desserts. The teriyaki chicken and beef have proved popular, along with the dumplings and hot-plate meals. Owner Flora says although some meals are not necessarily on the menu, the kitchen is happy to entertain special orders. A range of specials is available at the sushi bar along with a takeaway service – and all at very affordable prices. Not only are the various dishes freshly cooked, they’re served by friendly and knowledgeable staff. After four years in busy Shannon Ave, Sakuratei has developed a loyal band of regular customers, Flora says.

Poppykettle’s fun activities CHILDREN throughout the region are gearing up for the 34th annual Poppykettle Children’s Festival at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) from 22 to 23 October. The festival engages youngsters in the arts to unleash their creativity. The festival debuted in 1981, inspired by local author Robert Ingpen’s award-winning children’s book The Voyage of the Poppykettle. Since then generations of children have enjoyed the annual Poppykettle celebrations. “GPAC is proud to continue the Poppykettle tradition and we look forward to inspiring and entertaining a new generation of young people at this year’s festival,” says the centre’s general manager, Jill Smith. The fun begins next Thursday with Poppykettle Kinder Day from 10am to 1pm. The free event includes activities for kindergarten children and their siblings, including face-painting, pasta necklaces, badge making, a gymnastics circuit and various art and craft activities. Twisted history is a good scare COME and join the team at Twisted History inside an intact 19th century jail, as we explore the darkened halls and cells and hear the stories of those who once lived behind these walls. The prisoners themselves referred to it as the “Seaside Sanatorium” and it would become known throughout the colony as the “Prison of the Ill”, but this building was home to a host of convicts, murderers, lunatics and young girls under the most extreme conditions. From escapes to ghosts to paranormal investigations, we have a tour that is sure to appeal to everyone. Our famous nightly ghost tours will explore the stories of the convicts, the building, the executions and of course those who may still be here behind the gates! Or if you are after proof that the paranormal truly does exist, join our paranormal investigation team on our nightly two-hour investigation. The camper-trailers are fully set up in a large indoor showroom and staff are always on hand to provide valuable direction and advice.
Camper trailers can be viewed in an indoor display. Patto’s also have an extensive range of quality pre-loved camper-trailers in a variety of sizes, makes and models on sale, they are ready to be hooked up and driven to that special out of the way place. Trade-ins are welcome. Accessories including batteries, battery packs, Gasmate stoves, foldable wardrobes and camping stretchers are also available. “On returning from your break we can provide on-site storage for your camper-trailer or caravan, undercover or in our secure yard at competitive rates,” Patrick says.

THE LONGEST drive of the year for many motorists is to their holiday destination and the last thing they need is to suffer a breakdown or mechanical failure en-route, according to Rob White. The managing director of Wayne’s Wheel Alignment and Service Centre says drivers also needed to ensure that they’re running safe as well as running well. “We’ve been in the business for a long time many of our customers come to the workshop annually because they know the kind of service we provide and all our work is guaranteed,” Rob says. He urges car owners to make safety and reliability their priority before making any long distance trips. “We can do everything that is needed from mechanical repairs from a new vehicle and out of warranty servicing, wheel alignments, suspension, brakes, tyres, wheel balancing and automatic transmissions,” he says. The Belmont centre has state of the art equipment that allows its experienced staff to work on all forms of vehicles. “Just make sure everything is in order before you pack up the car and set off on holidays,” Rob says. The Geelong company has been operating for more than 25 years and Rob says you do not survive in such a competitive Industry unless you establish a trust with your customer. “Our reputation means everything to us, that’s why we are prepared to make that extra effort to ensure that our customers are happy with our service,” Rob says. The wheel alignment specialists have also expanded their engineering expertise to meet a growing demand for motorcycle maintenance.

DOING up a car is a great Aussie tradition and one that Adam Guglielmi is doing his level best to ensure remains an institution in Geelong. Owner of South Geelong’s Bodyshop Paint Supplies, Adam offers a one-stop shop with everything that anyone looking to restore or upgrade a car might need. Or a boat, or industrial machinery as well – he’s got everything covered. Bodyshop Paint Supplies is an auto paint retailer, dealing with all aspects of the panel trade as well as industrial coatings for machinery or boats. “We’ve got all the stuff they’ll need, everything from start to finish – and all the right stuff so they’re not led down the wrong track,” Adam says. “We want to make sure they get everything right the first time, so it’s more affordable and we’ll do great deals, too.” Bodyshop Paint Supplies carries brands including Debeer, Valspar automotive and industrial mix, House Of Kolor, HB Body, Smirdex abrasives, Durablock, Apac tools, Iwata sprayguns and airbrush equipment and Menzerna polishing compounds. A complete range of specialised tools for the industry is also available. Bodyshop Paint Supplies offers free colour-matching and, for trade customers, a free delivery service. The staff are all fully qualified tradesmen and more than happy to point customers in the right direction to achieve the best results possible. “If you’re after a custom job we carry the complete range of House Of Kolor custom paints, so why not come in and discuss your next project with us,”Adam says. IndySport Cats’ must-win match King for a day in after confidence rises our big tuna run
On the
bite
Chris Pitman
AFTER hearing about record-size southern bluefin tuna on their doorstep, Tim King along with Andrew Hopper headed out of Queenscliff on Saturday morning to get into the action. They began trolling a spread of lures in 70m south-southeast of Port Phillip Heads. Tim’s rod started screaming off line mid-morning, leading to an extended fight that ended with them boating a 119kg tuna. Plenty of anglers fished Bass Strait for tuna over the weekend but they were hard to tempt. Apollo Bay was still the number-one destination for ‘barrel’ tuna with several fish taken each day around Long Reef. Inside the bay, Queenscliff had an incredible run of southern calamari. The bight producing the best squid with large jigs fished in the deeper taking the biggest numbers, especially for anglers on the water early. Just around the corner, the mouth of Swan Bay also produced squid but in smaller sizes. Bag-limit captures were achieved, though. Snapper continued dominating reports from Clifton Springs, with numerous fish taken from the Point Richards channel over the weekend. Bait anglers fared best, with fresh squid or pilchards doing the trick. The Barwon River estuary held large numbers of smaller-model Australian salmon, with the Sheepwash yielding the biggest hauls. As has been the case for the past few months, the odd mulloway was taken by anglers with fresh or live bait. Down the coast, anKING, KONG: Tim King glers banked salmon with a big tuna. reaching 2kg, especially when spinning lures from the rock platforms and beaches surrounding Lorne. The most effective lure was the Sea Iron Pelecus. Numerous small estuaries down the coast fished well for bream, which proved a back-up plan while waiting for the salmon to come on the bite. Freshwater anglers fared better over the past week. Bradley Cox returned to Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, finding the recent run of warm weather had brought large redfin on the chew. He banked a 48cm fish that devoured a soft plastic. The Barwon River around Queen’s Park produced better numbers of redfin, with small hardbody lures doing the job. Moving around until locating a school was the key to success. Kevin Hunter and ANSA members fished the crater lakes Purrumbete, Bullen Merri and Elyngamite on the weekend. They managed brown trout, Chinook and Atlantic with a mix of tactics such as trolling and baitfishing with mudeye suspended under a float. The Chinook averaged 1.9kg, with Tyler Sparks boating the biggest at 2.6kg. Darren Dyson caught the best Atlantic salmon, 2.547kg, while Frank Naylor took the largest brown trout, 2.596kg, from Lake Elyngamite. Ken Worland boated three Chinkook salmon on Powerbait while fishing Lake Bullen Merri from the bank on Monday morning. Eric Box recently returned from Lake Toolondo where he fished mudeye under a float to boat 12 trout over three days. Eric released most, with his biggest trout a brown weighing 3.03kg. This weekend should be good for chasing snapper off Clifton Springs, with the area known as The Turn being an ideal starting point. Plenty of salmon should be holding in close around Lorne, so spinning from the rock platforms should be worthwhile, although boat anglers might like to try for bluefin tuna off Ocean Grove.
GEELONG Cricket Club put in some solid performances in last weekend’s double-header to give the playing group some much-needed confidence that it can match it with the best. On Saturday, chasing Casey South Melbourne’s 4/217, things looked grim as the top order crumbled to 3/29. But when former Test player Andrew McDonald, playing his first game for the club, strode to the crease, things settled down a bit. So much so that after some brilliant support from Liam Buchanan with 80 not out, McDonald smashed a fine unbeaten century to guide the Cats to their first win of the season. Backing up on Sunday against Ringwood at home, skipper Eamonn Vines top scored with a wellmade 74 in his side’s total of 231 from 50 overs. In reply, a tense struggle ensued but, unfortunately for the hosts, Ringwood was able to sneak home with two wickets in hand in the last over. Tomorrow Geelong travels to Northcote in a game it must win to capitalise on some good momentum and keep its finals hopes intact. In the Geelong Cricket Association, fans of topclass batting would be well advised to head down to Winter Reserve tomorrow as two of the best players in the league go head-to-head.

Star Englishmen Matt Lineker and Richard Oliver will take to the field for East Belmont and Geelong City respectively, and both will be aiming to guide their side to their second victory from as many starts this season. Lineker starred for the Lions last week against Lara, firstly with the ball taking 4/27 in the Cats’ innings of 185, before smashing a dominant 117 not out to lead his side to an eight-wicket win. Meanwhile at Richmond Crescent, City took on Newtown and Chilwell, with the Sharks restricting the visitors to just 129, Mark Worthington the pick of the bowlers with 4/25. In reply, Oliver did what he does best, peeling off an effortless 68 not out. Having said all that, both sides boast plenty of other good players but on paper the Lions appear to have a slight edge. LEOPOLD v Murgheboluc, Newtown and Chilwell v SOUTH BARWON, GROVEDALE v Lara,
ST JOSEPHS v Bell Post Hill, Geelong West v NORTH GEELONG. In division two, St Albans Breakwater hosts St Peters in a game that could see the winner claim early season premiership favouritism. Both sides enjoyed first up wins last week, St Albans Breakwater registering a 33 run win over local rival Thomson, while St Peters thrashed Torquay after Sam Bourke took 4/20. The class that St Albans Breakwater has added over the off season should be enough to see them win this one. HIGHTON v Waurn Ponds, Manifold Heights v MODEWARRE, MARSHALL v Alexander Thomson, TORQUAY v Bell Park, NEWCOMB and DISTRICT v Thomson. Inverleigh and Bannockburn both had good wins in round one last Saturday, making tomorrow’s clash at Inverleigh a great chance for one of these sides to really put their stamp on the ladder. Lachlan Platt was the difference for Inverleigh with a well-made 57 in its win over Little River, while Bannockburn had an even spread of contributors against Corio Bay. That even spread looks like being the difference tomorrow. Corio v MEREDITH, Corio Bay v WINCHELSEA, Guild St Marys v LITTLE RIVER, Lethbridge v Teesdale, Shelford bye. Over-60s on pace for cricket during Seniors Festival By PAUL MILLAR ONCE they were pacemen, now some have pace makers, but that competitive edge remains, as does old-school camaraderie for the Geelong Over 60 Cricket Club. Club secretary Graham Mulroney said it was all about participation, with the social side strengthening bonds and players looking out for each other on and off the ground. “We don’t bowl or run as fast as we used to years ago,” Mulroney admitted.
The players, however, refuse to allow their cricketing memories to remain in fading photographs on some out-of-the way shelf. They want to continue playing as long as their bones allow them and now and then one of them will produce something for all to celebrate. “We had a team that went to Narre Warren recently to play Casey and Lindsay Fisher (an ex-schoolteacher) clean-bowled Australian skipper Graham Yallop,” Mulroney said. The feat gave the Geelong side
plenty to talk about, especially Fisher. Mulroney said continuing to play or returning to the game helped maintain fitness and sharpness of mind. “Yet the social side of it is also important, as a lot of the guys are on their own. We look out for each other, it’s a support structure, our age group were workaholics and now we have time on our hands.” The players’ ages range from approaching 60 to mid-70s and they compete against about a dozen teams from around the state.
They also play invitational matches interstate and for the more committed there is always the state side. The Geelong cricket tragics play every Sunday from October until March, with their home base at Stinton Oval, Queen’s Park. As part of Seniors Week activities, they will have an intra-club game at Queen’s Park from 10am Sunday, with potential players invited to try out.
