■ No signal for plan to reopen ghost train station...

Plan derailed By CASEY NEILL

Kaye Eastwood and her daughteer Kelly say this crossing is dangerous for pedestrians. 145303 Mr Morton said it would make sense to grade-separate the Progress Street crossing in conjunction with a new or refurbished station. “There must be adequate provision for pedestrians including clear sight lines and appropriate lighting,” he said. “In the interim, the Progress Street crossing needs a proper pedestrian treatment including automatic gates in accordance with current standards.”

A spokesman for Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said there were no plans to reinstate the General Motors station, which the 892 bus route linked to Dandenong Railway Station. He said the State Government took to the last election a list of 50 level crossings it would remove, based on traffic congestion, safety, alternative routes available and economic benefits.

“The Progress Street level crossing has not been identified for removal in the first 50, but the nearby crossings at South Gippsland Highway and Abbotts Road have been, and will be removed in the next seven years,” the spokesman said. “The removal of Progress Street level crossing will be considered in the future.”

DANDENONG South’s disused General Motors railway station should be reinstated to cut commute times for workers in the growing job precinct. Kaye Eastwood and Public Transport Users Association are also calling for a safe pedestrian pathway across the rail line at Progress Street. The General Motors station opened in October 1956 to service the General Motors Holden car factory, and closed in July 2002. “The area has changed and there’s a need for it again,” Ms Eastwood said. “There’s so much industry and business.” Her son Adam has a disability and works at Gateway Industries in Progress Street. “I have to drive him because it’s such a long haul to get to there,” she said. “He’s got to catch a bus in the morning here by 6am, then he’s got to catch a train, then he’s got to catch another bus to get to the end of Progress Street on Princes Highway and then he’s got to walk up.” Ms Eastwood also has concerns about the safety of the Progress Street level crossing. “We’ve been on and on it to try and get it fixed,” she said. “There’s no pathway for the pedestrians to go across. They have to go out on the road. “It’s fallen on deaf ears all the time.” Public Transport Users Association (PTUA) president Tony Morton supported a station in the Dandenong South industrial precinct, given the long distance between the Dandenong

Church abuse Muslim avoids child threat jail By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A “DERADICALISED” Muslim convert – who was the victim of severe childhood sexual abuse at Catholic institutions – has been spared jail after threatening to kill his ex-partner’s daughter. Thomas Ratcliffe, 48, of Dandenong pleaded guilty on 11 October to nine charges, including threatening to inflict serious injury, over text messages largely sent to his partner and her daughter over a 24-hour period in late June. Defence barrister Peter Ward submitted for the “watchful eye of a stringent community corrections order” rather than jail. He argued Ratcliffe had not been given rehabilitation opportunities despite a deprived childhood including the abuse and lack of education, as well as a heroin and cannabis addiction.

“He deserves a break.” Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told that Ratcliffe, as part of a list of “bad” priors, had served a 30-month jail term for threatening police. At the time of that offending, the accused had suffered a psychiatric episode, been admitted to hospital, and had become a “radicalised” Muslim, Mr Ward said. The accused had to wait to undergo a deradicalisation program, meaning he received little parole time and treatment when released in October 2013. Mr Ward said Ratcliffe’s recent $100,000 compensation settlement for abuse as a child at St Vincent’s Boys Home and an Abbotsford nunnery was “huge” in the context of Catholic Church payouts. It reflected the severity of the abuse inflicted on the accused, Mr Ward argued.

The accused was motivated, in the “embryonic stage” of counselling and had found stable accommodation with his dog after 12 months of homelessness, Mr Ward told the court. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the court’s main focus was to ensure people were safe. He described Ratcliffe’s recent offending as “ranting” that didn’t make sense. “If I was (the victim) I would be concerned because they were concerned by your behaviour generally ... (and) the force and power of those threats.” Mr Vandersteen noted a mental health assessment stating Ratcliffe had trouble controlling anger, trouble expressing positive emotions, and exhibited reckless behaviour. He said despite 10 significant convictions in the past, Ratcliffe hadn’t received

a rehabilitative order and there was “no doubt” the accused needed assistance. Resolving the severe abuse and neglect inflicted on Ratcliffe as a child was almost like “unscrambling an omelette”, he said. “No-one should go through the abuse you did through the church ... but nothing can compensate you for what you went through as a young child.” Ratcliffe replied: “I won’t touch the money. It’s blood money. It means nothing to me.” Ratcliffe was convicted and put on an 18-month community-based order with judicial monitoring, secretarial supervision, drug and alcohol testing and treatment, and mental health treatment. “If you breach the order I’ll be the one that sends you to jail. I’ll respond very sharply,” Mr Vandersteen said.

POLICE believe two failed robberies on women walking alone are linked. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis said a 32-year-old Dandenong woman was walking along Cambria Road, Keysborough, about 7.05am on 12 October. A silver four-wheel drive pulled up ahead of her and a man exited via the front passenger door. He approached the victim, tried to grab her handbag from her arm but fled back to the vehicle when she fought back. The 4WD left the scene north along Cambria Road. Det Sen Const Jarvis said an eight-minute drive away, a 15-year-old girl from Noble Park was walking along Elonera Road. She was using her mobile phone when, at 7.23am, a man of Sudanese appearance approached her from opposite direction and demanded the device. When she refused, the man pushed her to the ground, lifted her upper body and threw her back down. The victim held onto the phone and the man fled to a silver 4WD parked 20 metres away. She suffered grazes to the back of her neck and a scratch to her right arm. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

A KEYSBOROUGH podiatrist is toe-tally focused on helping people in need put their best foot forward. Ngan Kim Harwood, known as Kim, is an official collector for Shoes for Planet Earth and on Wednesday 14 October gave more than 30 pairs of sports shoes to the Dandenong Community Street Soccer Program. “If you have old sport shoes that you no longer wear, please drop them off at our clinic,” she said. They need to be in good condition with no holes and good soles, clean and tied together in pairs. “The shoes will be sent to those in need all over Australia as well as many international communities,” Kim said. “These include homeless shelters, youth and female cri-

sis centres, Indigenous community sporting groups, orphanages, churches, flood and other disaster victims, African communities and many, many more.” Kim arrived in Australia in 1983 as a Vietnamese boat refugee. She’s been a podiatrist for 19 years and started The Footcare Clinic in Keysborough in 1998. “I have a deep connection with running,” she said. “I started running after my first child was born 10 years ago and have gone on to do seven marathons and two Oxfam 100-kilometre challenges. “Choosing to be a part of Shoes for Planet Earth was a natural progression as its purpose and mine are very similar.” The Footcare Clinic is at 159 Kingsclere Avenue, Keysborough. WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST-KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT RUDDUCK STREET, WHICH IS NAMED AFTER SAMUEL RUDDUCK.

Club businessman whipped town into line SAMUEL Rudduck came from a long line of business people in England. In Australia he first established a hay and corn store in Chapel Street, Prahran, and was at that time listed as the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute treasurer. He arrived in Dandenong in 1859 and built himself a general store in Lonsdale Street, near the corner of Walker Street, which he ran until 1885. It was built up on high piles because the creek in flood would surge all round it. The same site eventually became Renfrees, Crumps, McEwan’s, Savers and now headspace. Mr Ruddock also later built a small shop next door on the Walker Street corner opposite the town hall. In it, William Thompason opened a fancy goods store,

barber’s shop and tobacconist. At a public meeting in October 1872, Mr Rudduck moved that a Dandenong Cricket Club be formed. He was a foundation committee member and treasurer and helped to seek land from the Roads Board for a local sporting oval. By 1879 he was appointed a club trustee and overall he was active in the club as treasurer, president and a player. He was recorded as a football umpire in 1877 when Dandenong Football team played St Kilda at Dandenong. In 1878 he was appointed as Wesleyan Church in Dandenong’s trustee and accepted the

treasurer position. Mr Ruddock and his wife were both generous financial contributors to the church. He was a member of the anti-alcohol and drug groups the Independent Order of Rechabites and the Independent Order of Good Templars, and the Victorian Alliance. He was a part of the committee selecting commissioners for the formation of the Dandenong Market. He belonged to a group of male singers who performed in “primitive” concerts held in the Market Produce Shed using lamps and candles, with ushers carrying whips to control the crowd. He was part of a successful group that lobbied the Roads Board to remove toll gates around Dandenong and he fought that same board long

and hard when it wanted to run a drain beneath his shop. A drain was instead created around the property. In 1884 Mr Rudduck bought land on the corner of Clow and Foster streets in Dandenong, and it was sold to the Cadle family after his death. The Cadles were related by marriage to the Rudducks and Rudduck Street was formed

within that property. The original Rudduck Street was lost when Stud Road was linked to Foster Street but now connects George and Foster streets. Samuel and his wife Nettie in 1885 retired from active business after 25 years living and working in Dandenong, and settled on Port Nepean Road in the centre of Mordialloc.

Samuel died in 1903 at age 67 and was buried in Dandenong Cemetery. With thanks to the Dandenong and District Historical Society. Want to know the history behind a street name in Greater Dandenong? Let us know and we’ll find out! Email journal@ starnewsgroup.com.au.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 15 October 1915 Telephone Wanted Some time ago the council’s attention was directed to the urgency of taking immediate action to secure an automatic telephone box at the railway station, but nothing appears to have been done in the matter, or if steps have already been taken, the issue still rests in doubt. I hope the council will endeavour to get such a desirable and necessary facility installed at the earliest moment. It would prove a great boon to residents of Dandenong, as well as the

travelling public, and there should be no serious difficulty in presenting a strong claim to the Postmaster General for the installation of the telephone in question. 50 years ago 20 October 1965 The ‘Girls’ showed real form Dandenong - Lady members of the Staff of McEwans, Dandenong, recently played a football match against some of the Melbourne store and beat them. One way and another it was a torrid time for umpire Dennis Dale because the girls seemed to be in

better form than he was and showed the benefit of a number of practice runs. Dandenong snatched victory when Jan Barker took a mark and gaoled and followed with a behind just before the final siren. 20 years ago 23 October 1995 School spends cash on ‘Gold’ Lyndale Primary School has received $200 to help fund it’s musical ‘Grab that Gold’. The money was presented by Ken Leemon on behalf of Dandenong Lions Club. It also helped pay for a trip to Sov-

ereign Hill for 40 students who had a first-hand taste of life on the diggings. The trip enabled them to put more realism into their performances. ‘Grab that Gold’, with a cast of 85, will be performed at Carwatha Theatre. 5 years ago 18 October 2010 Field of Support Mini-fields of women have cropped up across Greater Dandenong this month. Pink cardboard silhouettes of women are on display at the South East-

ern Breast Clinic in Noble Park and Dandenong Hospital chemo day unit. They are just a couple of examples of the events held during October for breast cancer awareness month. The South Eastern Breast Clinic is also raising funds through its third annual breakfast. Breast care nurse and clinic coordination Lee Alexander said the breakfast had raised $20,000 for several cancer support services last year. - Compiled by the Dandenong and District Historical Society

Inga Peulich has denied allegations of racial bullying. 127157 Picture: DONNA OATES discrimination against persons on the grounds of their race, religion and ethnicity. “The allegations are now subject to legal processes that I have instigated.” Ms Peulich told Star News that she could not comment further on internal party matters. Casey councillor Gary Rowe told Star News: “I was chair of the meeting and the matters alleged did not occur.” Mr Philip said he was frustrated that a Liberal Party investigation only began after media reports in June, seven months after he made his complaint. The investigation has been conducted by party elders David Kemp and John Ridley. Liberal state director Simon Frost said the inquiry would be finalised shortly.

A CRANBOURNE Liberal Party member has called on state multicultural affairs spokeswoman Inga Peulich to resign and challenged her to sue him over allegations that she racially bullied him. Prasad Philip, backed by three other eyewitness members, has claimed that he was verbally threatened by Ms Peulich at a Cranbourne electorate party meeting at Amstel Golf Club in December. Mr Philip interpreted her alleged words as a put down of his Indian descent. “If it’s not true, she should sue me,” he told Star News. Ms Peulich, who is Legislative Council MP for the South-Eastern Metropolitan region, has denied the claims in Parliament and her denials have been backed by other Cranbourne Liberals. She has also issued legal letters for defamation against the complainant and a national newspaper that first published stories about the complaint in June. Mr Philip maintained he was a victim of racial vilification and had the right to “use my voice”. He said he remained a Liberal branch member because he wanted to “fight within the party” for a “real solution”. “The party should ask Inga to apologise to me,” he said. “If I was in Inga’s position, I’d step down as the opposition multicultural minister.” Mr Philip said he had also formally complained to police and the Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. In Parliament on 5 August, Ms Peulich said she “completely and categorically” rejected the “false” and “malicious” allegations. “As a member of Parliament from a migrant background, I find racism abhorrent, and my entire life has been committed to working against

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT…

JOURNAL OPINION and he pays less than Dandenong. The council wants to put meters in Springvale. People come from all over but now they will go elsewhere. Is the council looking after small business? John Kelly has been a councillor too long. I rang John to ask him why trees that they are planting grow to 15 to 20 meters and their roots crack the footpaths. Why do you need such large trees, are you sitting under them on your day off, how many times you hear that when a storm hits, branches fall and damage cars or even kill people. You only need trees two meters tall. His answers was “if you don’t like it you can plant your own”. Like he said it is only 50 cents per hour. It’s not the 50 cents, it is getting people to the market. The Dandenong council needs to look after small business and people. Karl Joseph, Noble Park.

YOUNG rockers from Wallara wanted to go to the recent Kiss concert so support coach Baden Johnson made it a night they’d never forget. The guys created costumes, put on make-up and went to the Rod Laver gig looking every inch like glam rock stars. They got cheers, applause and photos taken all the way to their seats. A NEW juice bar will soon be serving up beverages at the Dandenong Civic Centre. On Monday 12 October the City of Greater Dandenong approved a lease agreement with local resident Engin Erakman, trading as Juice Engine, for tenancy eight at 225 Lonsdale Street. The business will move in as soon as possible. Patience won out for a suspended driver who for five years defied a suspended jail term at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. During more than 30 hearings - as well as failing to appear in court seven times - the man refused to plead guilty to a careless driving charge after crashing his vehicle while driving suspended in 2010. As late as August, he won an adjournment by telling the court that he had

friends in the CFA and an expert witness who could prove his crash wasn’t careless. On Monday, the judge realised that a state Parliament amendment in 2012 meant any suspended jail sentence breach expires after three years. The man, an ice addict with 18 pages of previous and subsequent offences, walked free - on another suspended jail term! THERE were farcical proceedings after Greater Dandenong councillors voted down starting the statutory process for a proposed land swap deal with a developer in Hanna Street, Noble Park. Then the grave consequences dawned. There was talk that the developer, who wanted the swap to help build 167 apartments and town houses, could go straight to the state’s planning tribu-

nal on the basis of apprehended bias. One councillor later had second thoughts and wanted a rescission motion - until it was realised there was no motion to actually rescind. Councillors will vote again to ‘make right’ their decision on 26 October.

NOT everyone is impressed by the council’s new walking strategy. A councillor took aim at the strategy being based on a survey of just seven people who gave insights such as: “I do volunteer work and I walk from the bus to Thomas Street. “After I finish I like to walk around a bit more.” The councillor mused: “I’d be interested to know how much the council has spent coming up with this strategy.”

A wise man learns from his mistakes, a fool makes the same mistakes twice. The Dandenong council spent a lot of money putting meters in Dandenong. I used to go to the market every Saturday. I parked on the service road by KFC and walked down. It used to be two hours free parking. There were a lot of cars park there, now there are only three or four cars parked. Opposite the service road by Coles you could not get parking, now you can take your pick since the meters have gone up and even during working days you can get a park. At Waverley Gardens and Harrisfield Shopping Centre it is free parking and the veggies and fruit are a lot cheaper. All the Australians that owned veggie shops in Dandenong Market have gone because the rent is too much. One shopkeeper told me that he has a stall in Southland

Pleas for ice addicted son A MOTHER has tearfully told a court there’s no help for her iceaddicted son, who was freed after shoplifting more than $1000 of spray paint on a trolley from a hardware store in Dandenong North, a court has heard. On 11 October, James Kinnane, 20, pleaded guilty to the theft in which he tried to wheel his loot out through the Dandenong North Bunnings store’s timber section, on 17 September, about 3.20pm. When challenged by a staff member, Kinnane tried to use a false receipt to justify the spray cans worth $1103.40. Police at the scene observed Kinnane had no money on his person and appeared drug affected, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Renee Bloomfield told the court.

Kinnane told police at the time he’d smoked some “weed” and perhaps ingested “mushrooms”. The accused’s drug use started with cannabis as a 14 year old, his lawyer told the court. As an adult, he started going into the city and was introduced to amphetamines and ice, his lawyer said. Kinnane had been admitted to hospital, been on a community treatment order and diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, the court heard. His community treatment order with Peninsula Health ceased in February, the lawyer said. “He was on anti-depressive medication and went off that over time. It seems the counselling stopped after that.”

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell declined to place Kinnane on a treatment-based corrections order because it would set him up to fail. “I have an issue with treatment orders. If there’s a breach it’s jail.” Ms O’Donnell said Kinnane’s 24 days in remand custody was adequate time served, taking into account his youthfulness and that it was his first time in incarceration. In releasing Kinnane, Ms O’Donnell told the accused’s mother: “Ma’am, your son needs medical attention.” The mother replied from the gallery: “We’ve been through this for years. There isn’t any help.” “I’m sorry,” Ms O’Donnell said. “That’s out of my powers.”

Club’s greener pastures By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS KEYSBOROUGH Golf Club’s hopes to carve its green-wedge home into a housing estate and move to a new base at Pillars Road have taken a small step forward. Greater Dandenong councillors approved a revised subdivision of 280, 296 and 356 Pillars Road by developer Intrapac on 12 October. The southern 74-hectare lot is believed to be earmarked for the golf

club under a deal with Intrapac which is expected to yield $40 million for the club and members. Intrapac, in its application, has claimed the re-subdivision would enable the existing cross-country riding track and arena, as well as the opportunity for “sustainable farming activities” and a “broader range of agricultural activities”. Defenders of the Green Wedge was the sole objector to the re-subdivision. Some of its objections hinged on

the impacts of run-off water and traffic if the land was used as a golf course. However the council did not countenance those arguments on the basis it had not received an application for a golf course at Pillars Road - though it is aware of the club and Intrapac’s plan. A bemused Defenders of the Green Wedge secretary Barry Ross said: “Everybody knows it is going to be a golf course and they’re resubdividing it under the guise of agriculture.”

In June, the golf club’s members voted for the sale of their 76-hectare Hutton and Springvale roads home to Intrapac - subject to it being rezoned from green-wedge to residential. As part of the deal, the golf club would move to a yet-to-be-built golf course and training centre at 256-356 Pillars Road. It is seen as pivotal to keeping the club “immune from financial stress for many future generations”, club caption Darrell Swindells said.

The whole move still hinges on State Planning Minister Richard Wynne’s assent to moving the club’s existing home out of the green wedge and into the urban growth boundary. His spokeswoman has recently told the Journal: “The Andrews Labor government has committed to maintaining and enhancing the green wedge and, while we will not pre-empt any decisions, future applications would be considered with that pledge in mind”.

Fire brigade’s marches on for a bigger station VICTORIA’S busiest fire station is now also the biggest. The Dandenong Fire Brigade officially opened its new home on Saturday 10 October. Members marched from the old station at 120-122 Princes Highway to the new station, 400 metres away at 186-194 Princes Highway. Officer in Charge Paul Carrigg said the march symbolised the brigade leaving its 30-year-old post and assuming its vigil over the community in the new station. “The new Dandenong Fire Station has been located and built to meet the current needs of the brigade responsible for protecting lives and property in this heavily popu-

lated and busy area,” he said. “This integrated brigade responds to more than 2300 call-outs per year so it was important to update the station to meet the ever-changing complexities of our work and the increasing demand for our services.” CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said the 90-strong team of 50 volunteers and 65 career firefighters would respond not only to Greater Dandenong and surrounding areas, but other parts of Victoria. “I have no doubt this $13 million state-of-the-art facility will boost service delivery to the local area and the rest of the state now and into the future,” he said. The station includes six fire truck parking bays, ame-

nities for 16 on-shift staff, administration offices, large meetings areas, 51 car parking spaces, outdoor training areas including a dedicated road accident rescue training space, and a vehicle maintenance and cleaning area. Construction started in December 2013 and the brigade moved in in July. Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett said signalised direct access to Princes Highway would allow easier access to EastLink and improved response times to Dandenong North and Dandenong South. “Having the best facilities will keep our communities safe, and help prevent our firefighters being harmed while they protect us all,” she said.

Environment for the future RESIDENTS of Greater Dandenong are urged to have their say on the future of the Environment Protection Authority when an independent inquiry team hosts an open public meeting in Dandenong. A major independent inquiry has been commissioned by the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water to look at the future role of the EPA, Victoria’s environmental regulator. Dandenong is among 17 locations around the state chosen to host the meeting which will focus on land use planning, public health, emergency management, climate change, better regulatory approaches, and ways the EPA

can effectively consult with the community. Chairwoman of the Ministerial Advisory Committee Penny Armytage and deputy chairwoman Jane Brockington will host the meeting. It is being held at the municipal offices on Thursday 22 October from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the City of Greater Dandenong Municipal Offices, 225 Lonsdale Street. Register at www.epa-inquiry.vic.gov.au or telephone 9948 2882. Chairwoman of the Inquiry Penny Armytage said: “After extensive consultations across a range of areas in Victoria we are looking forward to hearing

directly from the Greater Dandenong community.” “We want to better understand individual, community, and business needs, so the EPA can be well equipped to meet Victoria’s future challenges,” she said. Interested parties are encouraged to visit the interactive website www.epa-inquiry. vic.gov.au to register to attend the consultations, participate in discussion forums, read the discussion paper and find out how to make online and written submissions. The inquiry will report to the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water by 31 March 2016.

The accused then dragged the victim to the ground where he was punched and kicked. The couple fled from an approaching security officer but the wife returned later to scream abuse at the victim, the court was told. Ldg Sen Const Bloomfield said the brother-in-law, with bruising and grazing to the left side of his face, was taken to Dandenong Hospital by ambulance.

A MAN - in concert with his partner - has pleaded guilty to assaulting his brother-in-law in Dandenong Plaza out of his belief that the victim was a paedophile. The couple approached the victim in Dandenong Plaza on 4 July, a court heard on 11 October. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Renee Bloomfield told the court that the couple believed the man had perpetrated “serious” sexual and physical abuse against his own partner and children. The victim told police he

The couple were later charged and issued with a family violence safety notice. The accused denied to police that he had punched and kicked the victim, but was just trying to break up the fight, the court heard. He claimed his wife had been taunted by the victim, who allegedly told her he’d do to her what he’d done to her sister. “I’ve got away with abusing children and I will get away with it in future,” the victim allegedly said. The accused will be sentenced at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 November.

Suspicious waste site fire PLUMES of black smoke from an industrial waste site fire caused the CFA to issue an advice warning to Dandenong South. Crews responded to the suspicious building fire in Ordish Road, about 8.35am on Sunday 11 October. It involved a shed at the rear of ACE Waste that was about 60 metres by 30 metres in size. Incident Controller Glen Proebstl said the shed was storing materials ready for disposal. “Around 50 per cent of the shed was saved thanks to the great work by

crews,” he said. “The other 50 per cent was gone prior to our arrival.” Firefighters from Dandenong, Frankston and Springvale attended alongside Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and police members. Greater Dandenong CIU is investigating. Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton urged any witnesses to come forward, particularly people who might have been walking or riding bikes along the EastLink Trail. Prime site gets new tenant

GREATER Dandenong Relayers have raised more than $27,000 for the Cancer Council. About 250 people kept batons moving around the Ross Reserve Athletics Track in Noble Park from 3pm on Saturday 10 October until 9am the following day. The Carwatha Champions team raised more than $6000 and will have a research grant named in honour of late student Damien who would have graduated this year. Event organiser Gaye Guest said the event raised $21,000 last year and that this year’s total could easily top $30,000. She said the event’s first chairman Alan Collier spoke at the opening and was part of the Rotary Club of Dandenong team. About 100 VCAL students supported walkers over the course of the evening and daffodils knitted by Dandenong U3A members brightened the track. “It’s a symbol now that is very unique to Dandenong. Whenever we go to an event we’ll be able to wear them, she said. Celebrant Dawn Dickson led a candlelight ceremony to honour those who’ve lost their lives to cancer. “It was just a beautiful service the way she brought it together, Ms Guest said. “We had a PowerPoint presentation of those people that we were remembering. “It was very special. Three candles were lit to symbolise the past, present and future. “A girl Poppi lit a candle in memory of her father, she said. “Nyssa lit the present one because she is a cancer survivor. Then there was a student, her name was Natalie, she lit the candle for the future. “Then there was a procession around the track and the three candles led the possession.

A NEW tenant is moving into the former Bendigo Bank building on Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. Councillors on Monday 12 October approved a lease with O’Brien Real Estate, Dandenong, for the prominent site on the Clow Street corner. Greater Dandenong Council bought 282 Lonsdale Street in 2007 “for strategic purposes. Bendigo Bank vacated the site in October last year when it moved to the new Civic Centre at 225 Lonsdale Street. The council has been investigating short-term social enterprise and market opportunities, but found converting the site to suit would cost too much. It opened it up for a short-term lease in July and negotiated with O’Brien Real Estate, which plans to move in on 16 November and open before the holiday season. The lease is for five years with an option for an additional five at a cost of $75,000 per year plus GST, with a 3 per cent increase each year. The council agreed to a three-month rent-free period in lieu of costs to fit out the building.

Jail for online abuse By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A NARRE WARREN South man has been jailed after pleading guilty to Facebook abuse of two victims in breach of a full family violence intervention order. Lionel Ari Albert had denied to police he was bound by the order, which banned him from approaching and contacting the victims, or publishing on the internet about them, a court was told on 11 October. According to a police summary, Albert - an ice user with an extensive history of drug possession and trafficking - had been

kept in custody since arrested over the matters in Noble Park in late August. In one of his Facebook posts in AprilJune, he had called one of the victims a “f***ing low life dog” and that she was a “full of s*** b****”. Albert ended the message with “ps the turk will find you dog”. The victim knew of “the turk” as Albert’s friend and someone known to act violently to women, according to the summary. Albert admitted to police that he posted the items but denied to police that he knew “the turk”.

He told them he had the right to publish the posts, claiming not to recognise the intervention order under the “Queen’s law”, according to the police summary. Albert was also charged with harassing one of the victims, phoning up to seven times on a private number on 21 August and referring to “the turk” post. “I have not breached anything. Those are alleged lies. I never called her in my life,” he allegedly told police. Albert was also charged with driving unlicensed, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an unroadworthy vehicle and driving with false number plates in

Noble Park on 3 April. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said the “distasteful” posts and phone calls had been frightening to the victim. She said Albert’s offending contravened his community correction order at the time. She didn’t penalise him for that since he’d otherwise completed 90 per cent of required appointments and unpaid work. Albert was jailed for eight months and fined $1500 on the other matters. His 45 days in remand were counted as time served in custody.

Club bridges language gap NOBLE Park Italian Elderly Citizen Club is celebrating its 25th anniversary. MPs and councillors attended a get-together and cultural performance at Noble Park Community Centre on Friday 16 October. Rita Giaquinta has been the club secretary since last year and her husband Rosario is vice president. Bingo, cards and other activities are held for about 100 members each Wednesday and Friday. Ms Giaquinta said many were in their 80s and one was 93. She’s aged in her 70s,

making her the secondyoungest. She joined the group about three years ago. “I like it because I’m bilingual to start off with, whereas the others are not,” she said. “I can communicate with both sides. “I used to be an office worker so I can help out with organising things. “I helped one of the members to become naturalised Australian because they didn’t know how to fill out the forms. “We’re very close-knit and I try to make everybody happy.” - CASEY NEILL

Hunt for tattoo robber A MAN allegedly bought alcohol from a Dandenong bottle shop soon after violently robbing another man last week. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives say the victim was struck unconscious by a blow to the face from behind as he walked near the Foster Street bottle shop about 3.15pm on 6 October. The robber then removed the victim’s bum bag and entered the bottle shop to buy drink. He was last walking towards the nearby Dandenong railway station. Police have released CCTV images of a man wanted in relation to the incident. The images show him talking on a phone as he purchases alcohol. He is described as of Middle Eastern appearance, aged between 25 and 30, with an athletic build, a large nose and short dark hair. He was carrying a black shopping bag and wearing white shorts, white runners and a black singlet top with a skull and cross bones motif on the front. Police say the man has several “unique” tattoos on his left bicep and chest. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Night to raise the roof By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A DANDENONG aid group, Atipan, is holding a night of cultural singing and dancing in Hampton Park to raise the final cash needed for typhoon safe refuge houses in the Philippines. The project began following the devastation caused when Typhoon Yolanda struck the Philippines two years ago. Atipan means ‘to care’ in Filipino and it has grown from a small group of Dandenong Baptist Church members to a not-forprofit project. The committed team now has members from across Casey and Dandenong. Atipan aimed to raise $25,000 to construct two concrete refuge houses to provide typhoon safe shelter in the Philippines. The team has already raised $17,000 which has left the shelters half built. Atipan co-ordinator Laurie North, from Dandenong, said that after his first visit to the typhoon affected areas he knew a lot more

had to be done. “The devastation and damage was absolutely unbelievable. “These people had nothing left,” Mr North said. “It didn’t take long to realise that these lovely people would not be safe from typhoons for years to come,” he said, and with that the project was started and land was donated to build the safe houses. Atipan is holding a night of cultural singing and dancing at the River Gum Performing Arts Centre in Hampton Park to raise the final $8000 needed to finish the building. Mr North said the shelters will be used day to day as work centres to enable the locals to earn some income. “The two buildings combined can take a large number of villagers; they are the only safe buildings in the whole Iloilo district,” he said. For more information on the project and to donate to the construction of the shelters visit www.atipan.com.

Play money for kinders gives kids early IT bug GREATER Dandenong kinders will share in more than $180,000 to improve playrooms and boost technology. The State Government announced successful Children’s Facilities Capital Program grant applicants on Tuesday 13 October. Major Infrastructure Expansion Grants of $25,000 will go to the Keysborough and Springside community kindergartens, which are both in Keysborough.

In Dandenong North, Rosswood Community Kindergarten will receive $24,600, Shalimar Park Community Kindergarten will get $19,600 and $24,100 will go to Heritage Community Kindergarten. Olinda Avenue Kindergarten in Springvale will receive $24,600 and in Springvale South, $24,600 will go to both the Springvalley and Darren Reserve community kindergartens. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the cash would allow the kinders to

enlarge their playrooms, giving them flexibility and space for children to learn and helping them to better accommodate the improved educator-to-child ratios ahead of their introduction next year. Noble Park’s Harrisfield Kindergarten will receive an $8500 Minor Infrastructure Refurbishment Grant and Athol Road Primary School Kindergarten in Springvale South will receive $10,000. They are among 122 grants handed out to refurbish playgrounds and improve ac-

MP sees red over Holi fest funding WHAT’S being touted as “a real breach of trust” could be a simple case of bad timing. Opposition Multicultural Affairs spokeswoman Inga Peulich has slammed the State Government for breaking an election commitment to fund the Holi festival at Keysborough’s Tatterson Reserve. The Labor Party promised $30,000 each year from 2015 to 2018 to help fund the Australian Indian Innovations Inc (AIII) festival of colours. Ms Peulich said no money came for this year’s event - “a real breach of trust” and “a worrying sign for future multicultural events”. “Labor’s failure to deliver shows its tokenistic approach to multicultural communities,” she said. But this year’s Holi Festival took place in March - before the May budget was announced. A government spokesman said the Holi Festival had instead been offered $30,000 per year from 2016 to 2019. “The Office of Multicultural Affairs has been liaising with the organisation about this funding,” they said.

Outstanding art effort MORE than 200 people turned out for the 10th Noble Park Community Art Show’s opening night. Noble Park Community Centre manager Brian Woodman said the Friday 9 October event was “just outstanding”.

“We also had record entries for the art show this year,” he said. “It was our 10th anniversary so it was a really big occasion.” Local artist Brendan NichollCaddell won the open section.

Post helps to pool resources A POOL-SIDE program is empowering young people from multicultural backgrounds in Dandenong. Victorian YMCA Community Programming has received $6000 in Our Neighbourhood Community Grants funding from Australia Post. YMCA’s Alexandra Ash said Dandenong Oasis would use the cash for an employment strategy to engage young people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. “The pathway introduces local young people to swimming lessons to enable capacity-building in the aquatic space, but also build essential life skills,” she said. “Once these skills are obtained, young people can complete an Austswim or/and lifeguard accreditation to commence employment at Dandenong Oasis and/or Noble Park Aquatic Centre.” Australia Post managing director and group CEO Ahmed Fahour said that the awards fund projects that build digital skills, increase employment opportunities for marginalised Australians, build community spirit and foster inclusion, or help communities to prepare for natural disasters.

SPRINGVALE Monash Legal Service has won a $100,000-plus state funding boost over two years to help chronic illness patients and victims of family violence. The funding will support an outreach lawyer in Monash Health hos-

pitals and health centres, as well as training health workers to recognise legal problems. The legal service said people who had on-going health issues often suffered from problems with debt, employment disputes and family violence. “Research has shown that pa-

tients often disclose legal issues to health workers before other services. “This is often the case in circumstances of sexual assault and family violence.” The service stated there was a large unmet need for timely legal help for such patients.

The service also received a state grant for more magistrates’ court family violence services and duty lawyers. Attorney-General and Keysborough MP Martin Pakula said community legal services provided essential services to disadvantaged and vulnerable Victorians.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Magic move to the top By CASEY NEILL MAGIC Mobility general manager Jill Barnett’s passion for the company is obvious as she explains her journey to the helm. Her face understandably lights up as she speaks about the Noble Park manufacturer’s life-changing work for people with disabilities. “It’s an absolute joy to know we have such a profound impact,” she told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards breakfast at Sandown Greyhounds in Springvale on Wednesday (14 October). The Premier Regional Business Awards were designed to profile and highlight successful businesses in the region. They’re now in their 25th and final year, so this year’s breakfast events are highlighting successful businesses from the awards’ past and newcomers with a bright future. A gala dinner next March will cap off the celebratory year. Magic Mobility was this breakfast’s newcomer, though it’s been around for 21 years. Ms Barnett came on board with a degree in mathematics and physics and 12 years at Rolls Royce in the UK under her belt. She was “over big business” and wanted to run her own, so spoke to a young man in Frankston who happened to be her brother-in-law. “I wanted to run a business and I wanted to move to Australia,” she said. So Ms Barnett went through a twoyear visa process before landing in a small factory that was then based in Rowville.

Youth Enterprise Award nominee Juwita Jouhari. 145602 “To start with I was a bit of a snob and thought it was beneath me,” she said. Then she realised the company was changing people’s lives. It produces custom-made wheelchairs, including a four-wheel drive chair. “We know that individual’s name and we know their story,” she said. She spoke about the custom wheelchair created for a man who wanted to weld. It’s was four-wheel drive so he could access his shed, had a swivel seat so he could move around the workshop, and boasted movable arm rests and a toolbox. Ms Barnett has used her Rolls Royce connections to help the company to export globally.

Guest speakers Jill Walsh and Jill Barnett. “America is our biggest market for export,” she said. “We’re highly sought after by colleagues in France, Germany, UK, New Zealand ... ” Magic Mobility is experiencing 20 per cent growth year on year. “Because we’re small, we can be innovative,” Ms Barnett said. Actco-Pickering has a long and successful history with the awards. Partner and Committee for Dandenong member Jill Walsh said the company claimed the employment

award in 2008 for pro-actively seeking apprentices and trainees across all age groups. Apprentice Alex Woller won the 2014 Youth Enterprise Award. “We call him Hollywood Woller now, he’s so used to being on stage,” Ms Walsh said. She was inducted into the chamber’s Hall of Fame for her efforts lobbying governments about local content, particularly in the rail sector. The manufacturer supplies sheetmetal to defence and rail and has

been “subject to the cyclical nature of those industries”. Ms Walsh said it had invested profits designing its own products “so we were less exposed to contract manufacturing”. There are aluminium ute and truck service bodies and an off-road camper trailer. “We had to lift our skills set in aluminium welding,” she said. Ms Walsh said Actco-Pickering now had one of the highest skill sets in the country. Youth Enterprise Award nominee Juwita Jouhari is studying a Diploma of Community Services. The Keysborough 19-year-old said she’d always struggled with education. “I was always that student in the corner,” she said. “But I realised that the more I push myself, the more I grow as a person. “I’ve always wanted to work with people who are most vulnerable.” She wants to be able to stand beside them, encourage them and support them. In five years she hopes to have finished her current diploma plus a case management or community development diploma. Juwita hopes to have a stable but challenging line of work in family violence or child protection. Guest speaker Riki Polygenis, National Australia Bank’s head of Australian economics, spoke about the global and Australian economies. Long-distance swimmer Tammy van Wisse will be the guest speaker at the final ever Premier Regional Business Awards breakfast on 26 November.

Train manufacturer gets the job done BOMBARDIER Transportation workers and suppliers have celebrated a major milestone. The Dandenong manufacturer has completed its contract to produce ACity electrical multiple unit (EMU) trains for South Australia. It invited customers and suppliers to sign a poster commemorating the occasion on Wednesday 14 October, and acknowledged the local supply chain’s significant contribution to the project. Bombardier operations director Stuart Inglis said the South Australian planning, transport and infrastructure department awarded the Adelaide ACity Train Project in March 2011. It was for 22 three-car electric trains, including 10 years’ maintenance at Bombardier’s Dry Creek facility in Adelaide. The department this year awarded a three-year fleet maintenance extension. Mr Inglis said the A-City combined

two rail vehicles known for their performance and reliability - the Perth B Series EMU and the Australian Design Award-winning VLocity diesel multiple unit (DMU). The trains include about 60 per cent local content. “Bombardier is proud to have designed and built this vehicle locally right here in Dandenong,” he said. “We are also extremely proud that this project has not only supplied robust, high-performing vehicles for the South Australian transportation network, but has done so utilising up to 600 local suppliers and, at peak, employed a workforce of 150 direct employees on the project.” Mr Inglis said the project’s success had not been without challenges. “But we have worked together through these challenges with the experience and dedication of the Bombardier workforce at Dandenong,” he said.

Workers and guests sign the project completion board. 145178 He also thanked the South Australian Government’s unwavering support, the extended Bombardier family’s global expertise and capabilities, industry partnerships, and “our accomplished local suppliers”.

City of Greater Dandenong mayor Sean O’Reilly and South Australian planning, transport and infrastructure department project director Phil Agnew also spoke at the event.

Pharmaceutical HQ build gives jobs a boost CONSTRUCTION of a $135 million pharmaceutical headquarters in Dandenong South is expected to create 200 new jobs. On Tuesday 13 October the first sod was turned for Ego Pharmaceuticals’ new global headquarters in Oppenheim Road, which will include a distribution centre and manufacturing centre. The company currently employs 295 people in Victoria and 155 interstate and

overseas, doubling its workforce in the past five years. It exports 34 per cent of its products. Stage one of the project is expected to be completed by late 2017. Ego Pharmaceuticals managing director Alan Oppenheim said the project secured the future of the business in Victoria. It would enable the company to “grow exponentially and continue to

drive our manufacturing and export business,” he said. “Australian manufacturing and exporting has significant benefits to the wider economy. “We’re committed to continuing to innovate, invest in Australians and lead the industry with our world-class practices from state-of-the-art facilities.” Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the investment “cements Victoria’s

position as a leading centre for pharmaceutical manufacturing”. “(It) ensures the company’s products continue to be manufactured in Melbourne for the Australian and global market.” The State Government supported Ego’s planning application with a view to further infrastructure on the site over the next 25 years.

Wheels are on a roll for a great year “WATCH out Dandenong - hold onto your hats because it’s going to be great next year.” Committee for Dandenong’s Jill Walsh has plans to bring back and expand April’s Dandenong on Wheels event. She’s dubbed it the Dandenong and South East Manufacturing Super Event and is scouting for international coverage. “We really need to put Dandenong on the map and send a message that manufacturing is alive and well,” she said. Ms Walsh said the day would be held during Manufacturing Week in May and would coincide with a super trade mission from abroad. “In Manufacturing Week, Dandenong will stop for the best of reasons,” she said. The inaugural event stopped traffic around Dandenong Civic Square on 17 April, a tram, train, buses, trucks, caravans and more surrounding proud workers, students and visitors. Ms Walsh wants next year’s showcase to involve niche and large manufactures and to highlight what jobs are available in the sector. She’ll hold a cocktail event on stage at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong on 10 November to raise funds for event planning.

Honour for conscripts MEN called up to serve their country during desperate times have been honoured in Berwick. The National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (Victoria) South-East Sub-Branch in November 2006 erected in Buchanan Park a plaque dedicated to the Nashos who served in the navy, army and air force between 1951 and 1972. In particular, it pays tribute to the 212 who paid the supreme sacrifice during active service in Borneo and Vietnam. The group each year holds a memorial service at the plaque, and this year’s event took place on Sunday 11 October. The one-hour service include a volley from re-enactment group The Great War Association, a wreath-laying ceremony and music from the City of Greater Dandenong Band. The National Servicemen’s Association of Australian represents the 287,000 young men the government called up for service during two conscription schemes.

Women take long-term view DANDENONG women have raised $320 for children in need. About 40 Dandenong Evening VIEW (Voice Interests and Education of Women) Club members and guests enjoyed a three-course meal at the Graduate’s Restaurant at St John’s Regional College in Dandenong on Thursday 17 September. The school’s catering and hospitality students use the space for hospitality and catering studies. The dinner, a raffle and door prizes raised money for the Smith Family’s Learning for Life program which helps disadvantaged Australian kids to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. Humphreys leaps to top By JARROD POTTER ROCKING up to the Southern Football League awards night last week, Keysborough midfielder Geoff Humphreys didn’t expect much more than a good night out ... let alone picking up the Division 2 league best and fairest. Humphreys, 26, from Highett, leapt to the top of the polling in his inaugural SFL Division 2 campaign as the Burra mainstay polled 21 votes to knock off injured team mate Tyson King (15 votes) and Highett’s Jacob Duscher (14 votes). Called to the podium to pick up his first piece of league silverware, Humphreys could not believe it was his name the umpires thought topped the league this season. “Pretty surprised to be honest – I didn’t think much of it heading there,” Humphreys said. “Just went along and enjoyed the night with the rest of the crew and then they start reading the votes at round 15. “They went from and I was on top from then and Tyson (team mate Tyson King) wasn’t going to play any more games, so I knew I had him covered.” On an individual note, Humphreys was pleased with his season but was disappointed for the team as a whole as the Burra bowed out of the SFL Division 2 finals race in straight sets. It wasn’t the end to the year they expected, after leading the league for a few rounds at the start of the season and ending second in the home-andaway season.

“Personal year I thought I went ok just apart from going down a couple of times,” Humphreys said. “Niggling injuries and I feel I’ve got a bit of work to do to get back stronger for next year. “As a team, a pretty disappointing end to the year going out in straight sets – we did all the things right throughout the year but fell away at the preliminary. “Injuries don’t help us with Kingy and Wilko (Corey Wilkinson) going down and inexperience by the young blokes as well not realising the position we were in. “A lot of our blokes didn’t realise the position they were in to win a flag and what we had to sacrifice.” But as a whole the transition from Casey Cardinia to Southern FNL received the thumbs up from Humphreys – as the club is trending upwards for the first time in many years. “Without a doubt (the move was positive),” Humphreys said. “Obviously, going off the last five years I’ve been there, the previous four years in Casey Cardinia have always been tough and we were always there abouts, but this has levelled the playing field heading across the board. “The (SFL) players seem good, and it’s always a tough battle, no matter who you come across – at the end of the day it’s always 22 versus 22.” He wanted to thank the club for their support, especially president Manny Scata for his hard Geoff Humphreys had the shock of his footballing life last week when the Keysborough work behind the scenes – especially getting ju- midfielder received the SFL Division 2 league best and fairest. 126160 Picture: JARROD POTTER niors back to the club.

Pressure’s off for draftees doing the hard yards By JARROD POTTER THE hard work is finally over for a fleet of TAC Cup players after a gruelling week at the AFL National and State Combines. Eight Dandenong Stingrays featured in the national combine – the final chance for AFL recruiters to test and evaluate this year’s batch of potential draftees. Number one draft prospect Jacob Weitering, premier defender Keiran Collins, Narre Warren pair Gach Nyuon and Kurt Mutimer as well as Beaconsfield quartet Bailey Rice, Tommy Glen, Tom Jok and Brandon White performed admirably at the event. Nyuon put his hand up as the premier ruckman in the draft as the All Australian equalled Nick Naitanui’s jumping records – hitting 362cm for the absolute running vertical jump. From rough diamond to polished AFL prospect in three years as a footballer, Springvale resident Nyuon’s footballing growth has been astonishing and Dandenong Stingrays region manager Mark Wheeler said it had put the 201cm ruckman at the top of his area of expertise. “Young Gach has been great, I got stopped about four or five times and congratulated for the amount of work we’ve been able to do with him,” Wheeler said. “That’s a credit to himself and he’s grown up a lot in the last 12 months. “He’s presented himself in a manner that he demands an audience – he’d sit in a corner before, but now he’s the funny bloke who can stand in the meetings.” Also shining on the big stage, Weitering showed another string to his bow – running a 15.1 beep test impress out of the tall defenders while Collins’ clean hands test (29/30) and running personal best times kept him in recruiters’ minds as well.

Mutimer’s express 20m sprint – clocking in at 2.88 seconds – clinched the top time ahead of Alex Morgan, Daniel Rioli and team mate Glen (2.90). “I think as a group itself they all presented themselves pretty well – Collins and Weitering were the standouts – the testing showed they’re both in the top 20,” Wheeler said. “15.1 – shouldn’t be running that when you’re a key back and he shouldn’t be able to achieve what he does with his results, but he did. “Performed in a professional manner, which was good for him. “Collins was fantastic – PB his 3km time, 20m, repeats and the feedback we got was all the boys interviewed well with the clubs.” The state combine had its hiccups with long wait times and a compressed schedule, but the Rouse boys still managed to excel in their beloved beep test, with Zach reaching 16.1 and Jordan getting into the 15s. From now on the potential draftees’ fate rests in the hands of the recruiting staff ahead of November’s AFL National Draft, held in Adelaide. At least half a dozen Stingrays will have their names called throughout the drafts, according to Wheeler, but he thinks there are up to 14 players ready to make the step up if they got their chance. “Credit to the boys for all the hard work they’ve done, and it’s a tick to us that we’ve done everything and there’s not much we can do after that,” Wheeler said. “We’ll get the follow up phone calls after they rejig the order and trade their picks – but I still reckon we believe have six to eight genuines who will go and a good four to six in the rookie chance window and we’re pretty happy with that.”

Coach makes strong start By JARROD POTTER ONE match, one win. It makes a strong start to WNBL life for Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson, who commenced her WNBL coaching career on the right note for the former WNBL 250-game player. Making the coaching leap from SEABL - where she has won four championships in her five campaigns – Anderson returned to the league where she made her mark as a player last Saturday in her WNBL coaching debut ... Dandenong’s round 1 clash against Canberra. It took a while to gather pace, but once the Dandenong WNBL juggernaut reached full steam against Canberra in a season opening 80-72 victory. A first term fright left the Rangers trailing 10-24 after the Capitals stormed ahead and left the visitors reeling in the season opener. Dandenong’s defence couldn’t hold onto the elusive Capitals – who’d slip out of trouble in the dying seconds of the shot clock to punish the careless Rangers. But despite the horror first term, it wouldn’t be a sombre trip back home as the Rangers lifted. Turning a 19-point deficit back into the black was a team-wide effort after Sara Blicavs (four points) was fouled out of the game after 21 minutes on court. It left the heavy lifting to

the Dandenong bench – with Jacinta Kennedy, Annalise Pickrel and Tenaya Phillips all shining in the eight-point win. Dandenong slammed 15 points in a row in a devastating third-term run to leave Canberra in disarray. From there it was a matter of holding off Canberra’s last-ditch offensive efforts to snare the round 1 triumph. Anderson enjoyed most of her debut WNBL match as coach and thought it was stellar to show the side’s ability so early in the year. “It was great – I didn’t enjoy the first quarter – but I think everyone kept their nerve and it was great to have everybody there with us,” Anderson said. “My coaching staff and the girls were really excited to get that first win, but the credit goes to such a new team and new coaching staff.” “I think basically the first quarter we were a bit nervous – played tentative basketball and didn’t really play our style,” Anderson said. “Took a while to settle in ... but then second, third, fourth quarter the girls really found their feet and we found a group went on a 15-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead. “We made some adjustments at half-time and during the third quarter and we found a group that really got it done – it showed a lot of character fighting back.” Dandenong hosted South

Rangers eyes on the top spot THE Jayco Dandenong Rangers are looking forward to make it to the top in what promises to be an exciting Women’s National Basketball League. The Rangers took time out recently to visit their major sponsor Jayco at its Dandenong South headquarters, with Jayco founder Gerry Ryan delighted to announce that

this is the 16th season his company had stepped in to sponsor the Rangers, who were hosted to lunch. The three-time championship winners who recorded an impressive first up win against Canberra on 10 October continue to shine in the top tier basketball competition.

Slater is back to base and at helm IT WAS time for Scott Slater to return to Hallam. Having honed his own skills in the Hawks’ colours in the ’80s – winning a junior flag at the club as an under-15 – Slater wanted to give the next generation of Hallam footballers the same chance to flourish at Hallam Reserve. “I was born and bred in Hallam, so it’s in my blood a bit and just wanted to give a bit back to the junior comp and junior club that I was a part of three years ago back then,” Slater said. “Trying to build something that we can look back in five or 10 years’ time and think ‘yeah, that was fun’.” Entering its fifth year in the league with a desire to finally get off the foot of the SFL Division 3 ladder, Hallam Football Club took the decision to advertise for its senior

coaching role despite having an incumbent ready to continue. “It is pretty exciting to be honest – four-year-old club to make the jump well and truly up the ladder,” Slater said. He replaces 2015 coach Gary Frangalas – who re-applied for his job next year – but Slater was picked over the former AFL player for his development experience and local knowledge. “The big thing was because of my seven years with the Stingrays development squad, they wanted someone who could concentrate on youth with the local kids in the area,” Slater said. Hallam Football Club is hosting a Meet the Coaches Day on Sunday at Hallam Hotel from 5pm to 7pm. For more information on the club, visit www.hallamfootballclub.com. au.

Audi fit for the fight By EWAN KENNEDY

MAJOR SERVICE & TUNE-UP Audi Q3 is getting on in years but the latest front-end freshen up and tail tuck comes up nicely. Audi’s Cylinder on Demand (CoD) technology to reduce fuel use and emissions. With two of the four cylinders shutdown under light throttle loads, Audi says that fuel saving is up to 20 per cent. At the top of the infotainment range is MMI navigation plus with rotary pushbutton and 7.0-inch monitor displaying graphics and navigation map in 2D or 3D. The Bose surround sound in our test Q3 had a 10-channel, 465-Watt amplifier driving 14 speakers, including a subwoofer. Cleverly, it uses a microphone

to analyse intrusive noises and adjusts playback accordingly. Brilliant sound can be enjoyed to the full. The Audi Q3 achieves the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating. There is a range of advanced driver assistance systems to help avoid a crash; side assist, active lane assist, high-beam assist and hill descent control, along with electric folding and dimming exterior mirrors. The engine is a delight to sit behind, very responsive after the expected few moments of turbo lag and willing to charge past vehicles being overtaken with a minimum of time on the wrong side of the road.

Petrol consumption was in the six to seven litres per 100 kilometres range in highway and motorway cursing, rising to eight to 10 litres around town. Chassis fine-tuning as part of the update combines with Audi quattro all-wheel drive system and speedsensitive power steering. The set-up gives the Q3 surprisingly agile handling for a tallish SUV. Noise and vibration are well damped and only the roughest of Aussie back roads will create anything remotely approaching unpleasant sounds.

AUDI and its two prestigious German rivals are locked in serious sales combat in the midsize SUV crossover market. Audi’s Q3 recently received a midlife makeover to increase its fitness for the fight. Part of this revamp is the use of electronic stabilisation control that can be set up in two stages. The ESC off-road mode adjusts ABS and the electronic differential lock. Audi Q3 maintains the almost coupe profile that has come to characterise many modern crossover SUVs. Those looking for a big load-lugging station wagon should probably shop elsewhere. The single-frame radiator grille and wraparound tailgate follows the very successful theme Audi has been using in its range for some time. This facelift sees redesigned headlights that are now xenon plus for added illumination. If that’s not enough optional LED headlamps can be selected. Our test car was fitted with the 2.0-litre TFSI turbo-petrol engine producing 132 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. It can run from rest to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.
