Festival’s top of the pops THE official relaunch of the Australian Body Art Festival held in Eumundi over the weekend has been deemed a success, with hundreds turning out to see this year’s Pop Trashion creations. The festival was a celebration of all things pop culture, from Barbie to Andy Warhol and everything in between. The three-day collaboration of body painting, fashion, street art, music, photography and street culture also included workshops, exhibitions and for the first time, an evening arts jam on the Saturday night. Noosa Plan panned By JOLENE OGLE A LOCAL developer has slammed The Noosa Plan as “inflexible” and “out-of-date” after being served a show cause notice for breaches in a planning approval. Ralph Rogers, who recently opened the multi-million dollar Acres development in Noosaville, said a show cause notice for breaching his original development approval showed how “out-of-date” The Noosa Plan was. “The 2006 Noosa Plan is not reflecting what the lifestyle is now,” he said. “We live in changing times and the planning scheme should reflect that.”

Noosa Council planning and environment manager Kerri Coyle said residents had raised “valid concerns” that aspects of the Acres development were “inconsistent with the planning approvals for the site”. The issues included noise from a cool room, a substantial cafe expansion and the opening of a clothing shop. “Council granted the landowner approvals in 2012 and 2013 to modify and expand the garden centre. The application sought approval for a small cafe of 19 seats, it made no mention of a retail clothing shop,” Ms Coyle said. Council officers have raised the concerns with Mr Rogers who has

since enclosed the cool room, and Ms Coyle said the show cause notice set out a number of options for resolving the other issues. “The owner cannot just set aside planning scheme requirements, and must ensure that what is occurring on the site has formal approval,” she said. While Mr Rogers admits he should have known better, he blames an “element of naivety”. “If I had known how inflexible the plan was then I wouldn’t have tried it,” he said. Mr Rogers also argues the retail store should be seen as ancillary use as it is “no bigger than a market stall” at 20 square metres and it was also common to see fashion elements in

many of the lifestyle and garden centres throughout the country. “I’m trying to take a world-class approach to an industry that is being killed off by big box retailers,” he said. “Acres is reflecting future trends. This is a blueprint for the future.” Mr Rogers said Noosa needed to keep up with the changing business and social landscape, or risk falling behind. “The Noosa Plan is so fixed, it’s not keeping up with the changing world,” he said. “If Noosa has such a claustrophobic attitude to development and innovation, developers will simply go elsewhere."

And that’s a move Noosa can’t afford, according to Mr Rogers, who said an ageing population paired with an average weekly income 20 per cent lower than the state average was a recipe for disaster in Noosa. “Acres is all about innovation and giving young people a go to help drive business and economic growth,” Mr Rogers said. Ms Coyle said council was due to start a review of the shire’s planning scheme next year, saying it was a process that would involve input from the community. “This is an ideal opportunity for landowners and business owners to raise concerns they have about the current scheme,” she said.

Council up the tree By JOLENE OGLE RESIDENTS of the luxurious Iluka apartments in Noosa Heads are outraged the body corporate wants to cut down gumtrees in what they say is a blatant plan to improve views. The issue appeared before council’s planning and organisation meeting on Tuesday 13 October, where the council agreed to defend an appeal lodged by the body corporate who wants to remove 10 gumtrees from an environmental covenant area to “satisfy a bushfire management plan”. The original fire management plan, approved by council, required the first 2.5 metres of the covenant area to be a “fuel reduced zone” with only fire-retardant plantings to be established in the area. According to the report to council, the body corporate wants to cut down the trees because it believes the 10 gumtrees pose a fire danger to the building. Body corporate president Clive Brown said the appeal to remove the trees had nothing to do with improving views, but came down to an obligation to maintain the fire management plan. “We have had two independent reports, a visit from the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and a visit from the Rural Fire Brigade, and they all agree the trees are too close to the building,” he said.

According to council’s report, the trees in question serve as a visual buffer for Noosa Sound residences and are known koala food trees, with Iluka residents sharing photos of koalas in the trees throughout last month. Following the appeal from the body corporate, Noosa Council sent an independent bushfire consultant to view the covenant. The bushfire consultant found the vegetation is “not a risk to life and/or property and/or environment should the area become involved in a bushfire” and that the covenant is a “low bushfire hazard area”. Mr Brown said with council’s consultant returning a different opinion to other fire services, the decision now came down to the planning and environment court. Iluka resident Alan Douglas said the trees should stay as they block the sound from local resorts and traffic on the Noosa River, and provide food for local koalas. “I don’t want to see them cut down,” he said. “I’ve seen koalas enjoying the trees.” Mr Douglas said he was also disappointed the body corporate funds would be used to pay for a legal battle many residents didn’t want to take part in. Noosa Council will now defend the appeal lodged by the Iluka body corporate in the planning and environment court.

FOR six months, nine Green Army foot soldiers have been weeding, seeding and maintaining over 20 sites throughout Noosa Shire as part of a Federal Government program. On Friday, the team gathered to graduate from the Green Army program that helps people aged between 17 and 24 gain practical training and experience through paid work in the local environment.

Green Army supervisor Duncan Struthers said the program had been a great success in Noosa, with the crew teaming up with local land care groups to help deliver projects. “The program has had a positive effect on the team,” he said. “They have all moved forward with some heading off to travel, others have found work and some will study.” Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss attended the graduation cer-

emony on 16 October at Noosa Council Chambers and congratulated the nine participants for their work and achievements throughout the shire. “When dropping into the unemployment cycle, it can be hard to break,” Mr Truss said. “Programs like this are great to help train people.” Green Army graduating member Jean-Luc Tylor said the experience had been rewarding. “A positive energy flows through the team,” he said. “It’s

been a wonderful learning experience and everywhere we’ve gone, we have been extremely welcome. “We are just humble kids learning our way through life. But through this, we have learnt a lot and achieved a lot. It has opened our eyes to the beauty and complexity of nature.” Noosa Mayor Noel Playford also attended the ceremony and said Noosa needed more Green Army team members. “There’s a lot of work to do,” he said.

tennis player to pull his head in. He isn’t happy that some are questioning whether Kyrgios’s is just displaying typical Aussie behaviour. Both Dawn and Greg are without peer and are regarded at home and abroad as true legends, and both are proud to call themselves Australian. I can guarantee if Ken Rosewell, John Newcombe or Rod Laver were around, young Nick would be given a more than stern talking to in the dressing room. Norman’s parents who live at Pelican Waters was in Australia last week to open the 100th course designed and built by his company. Sadly, another loser last week was the Noosa Surfing Reserve group who missed out on a place at a prestigious World Surfing Reserve. The Gold Coast headed by former world long board champion Andrew McKinnon got the nod

for the area from Burleigh Heads to Snapper Rocks. I’m sure Phil Jarrott/ Noosa Council and their team will be disappointed, but they are to be congratulated for putting National Park and Noosa on the world stage. I don’t think it’ll be too long before our beautiful and unique area will eventually be rewarded by the Save the Waves Coalition. OK now while we are on the world stage, congratulations to our local boxers Bryce Hegarty, Sam Cameron-Hands and James Beasley who are currently training and fighting in Germany. These welltrained amateurs from Noosa Box Office and Impact Clubs under the watchful eyes of Israel Kani and Mark Evans are on the verge of great careers. The Sunshine Coast has been a wonderful nursery for boxing champions over the past 40 years

with many National Champions including former Reef Hotel Manager Bob Wilson. The welcome mat is out for the National and International visitors here for the annual Women’s Badminton contest. The leisure centre will host the expected 350 players who will battle it out for honours in the event which started back in the early 1930s. And speaking of women’s success, how about the girls of Noosa Today picking up two awards at the recent Qld Country Press 2015 Awards. Firstly, the most improved newspaper and the best printed supplement for the Anzac edition. Today, Managing Director Paul Thomas said the awards were an excellent achievement and showcased the high quality of work. Next week I will look back to the first ever Noosa triathlon in November 1983. Until next time....

I KNOW you’re not to compare eras, but I reckon I might conjure up some support in today’s column, after golfing great Greg Norman joined the list of Nick Kyrgios detractors. Firstly, it was Noosa’s Dawn Fraser leading the way when she sank the boot in after the erratic tennis star began his ever growing list of bad behaviour. Sadly, the swimming legend was howled down by many saying ‘ he’s only young, give him a go’. Two-time British Open winner Greg Norman doesn’t usually say much, but when he does, most listen. When job training is a necessity By JOLENE OGLE IT'S time to get busy creating jobs, according to Noosa Councillor Sandy Bolton who wants to use Noosa’s resources to grow local industry and break the unemployment cycle. Throughout the year, Cr Bolton has brought together 18 stakeholders from the education, training, employment and business industry to discuss ways to tackle Noosa’s high unemployment rate in an unemployment and training round table. The group first met in May and have since developed three recommendations that include a submission to Council’s draft social and local economic plans that calls for an audit of industry training needs in Noosa. It is hoped the audit will reveal information on what courses would suit the Noosa community and develop the rationale for reopening the former Noosa TAFE facility. While on a recent visit to the site, Cr Bolton said it was resources such as the training facility that are severely under-utilised in the Noosa community. “Noosa needs jobs, but there is also a demand for exports of Noosa products such as furniture and arts and a growing demand for Noosa-based products such as paddockto-plate producers within the food industry,” she said. “Why don’t we utilise a facility such as

the former Noosa TAFE site to develop and grow these industries in a training capacity?” Cr Bolton said the development of such programs would offer locals the opportunity to learn an artisan skill plus gain employment through the sale of Noosa products, helping break the unemployment cycle and grow Noosa as a brand. The appointment of a project co-ordinator to drive the initiative and help manage current initiatives was also part of the group’s recommendations, as well as the formation of an employment and training reference group with representatives from all stakeholders, designed to continue to collaboration between industry, education providers and government. Cr Bolton has handed the reins of the reference group to Sharon Wright who will help drive the push for industry and employment growth. “I am proud to volunteer my time to be part of such a knowledgeable and committed group in its efforts to address a real concern for not only our youth but to all ages,” Ms Wright said. Ms Wright said anyone who would like to become involved and offer their experience to the network in its aims to improve training opportunities and reduce unemployment, is welcome to phone her on 0415 843 592.

Crime stats up THE latest crime statistics have been revealed and while the rate of some offences have increased, local police say it’s down to confidence in the system and targeted policing, not a greater crime rate. According to the latest statistics, the overall crime rate has risen 8.5 per cent but offences against the person have decreased 10.6 per cent, the rate of assault is down 7.3 per cent and the rate of robbery is down 3.9 per cent. Offences that have increased include the rate of rape and attempted rape which rose by 5.8 per cent, the rate of drug offences which rose 21.4 per cent and the

rate of liquor offences which rose by 51.9 per cent. Sen Sgt Steve McReight said the increases in offences in these areas is likely down to better training for local police in dealing with the matters, a greater awareness of the issues in the local community and related targeted policing campaigns as a result. In regards to the increase in rape and attempted rape cases, Sen Sgt McReight said many of the cases his team deal with are historical incidents. He said a growing confidence in the police’s ability to handle such cases has seen

an increase in offences coming through the Noosa Heads station. For drug offences, he said a greater awareness of drug issues in the community means Noosa police can carry out targeted policing campaigns to reduce the spread of drugs throughout the community, which can result in fewer drugs on the street but greater offences due to more arrests and charges. The introduction of a liquor licencing co-ordinator in the region has also helped police to crack down on liquor offences and has seen an increase in charges laid as a result of the targeted policing.

INBRIEF

NOOSA Council will today award a $5.5 million contract for sealing Dr Pages Road to local contractors Shadforths Pty Ltd. A report to the general committee meeting on Monday 19 October outlined the planned sealing of the hinterland road with the works expected to cost $800,000 more than previously estimated due to extra culvert work needed to complete the job. The project will see Dr Pages Road become an 8.5 metre wide road with a speed limit of 80km/h and a flood immunity of up to 10 years. The road will also feature a 1 metre shoulder for cyclists to help make the road cycle-friendly. The sealing of Dr Pages Road is ex-

pected to complete the “missing link” in the tourist road network of Noosa Shire.

Council capital works budget OVER 50 per cent of council’s capital works budget will be spent by the end of November, according to Noosa Council director of planning and infrastructure Martin Drydale. Mr Drydale updated councillors in the general committee meeting on Monday 19 October, stating that as of 15 October, over $3.3 million or 12 per cent of the year’s budget had already been spent on projects with another $3.9 million committed to future projects, Mr Drydale said the figures were on par with what was to be expected and after today’s allocation of $5.5 million for the sealing of Dr Pages Road, more than $12.2 million or 43 per cent of the budget

would have been spent. The repair works to the Munna Point Bridge are also expected to start this week.

EVERY Christmas the beautiful tree at the Emerald and Maple Street roundabout in Cooroy lights up, thanks to Ricon Contractors, but this year the stars will shine a little brighter. Ricon Contractors in partnership with the Cooroy Chamber of Comemrce are offering the community the chance to sponsor a star in honour of family and friends who can’t be with them over the holiday season. Eight 80cm stars are on offer and locals can choose to use the star as a memorial for a loved one, or it can be dedicated to those overseas, or as a thank you to recognise someone for their special effort throughout the year. As an added feature, a story will be written about each person who is honoured with a star and the story will be hung on the wall of the Corooy RSL for the month of December. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president Danielle Taylor said the stars offered the community another chance to be a part of the much-loved turning on of the lights on 4 December.

“Christmas in Cooroy is such a wonderful event focussed on family, community and all the spirit of the festive season,” she said. “Ricon’s sponsor a star idea is such a lovely way to include those who can’t be with us.” Danielle is one of the first locals to sponsor a star in honour of her Nana, who recently passed away. “We lost my nana a couple of weeks ago, so I immediately wanted to sponsor a star in her name, Audrey Cooper,” she said. “She was 94 years old and still living on her own until recently, and while she had never made it up to Christmas in Cooroy she followed the media stories on the event and was very proud of my involvement as event manager. Now, this Christmas, she will be a part of our town’s special event too.” To find out more about the sponsor a star project and Christmas in Cooroy, visit www.christmasincooroy.com.au. Top achieving year nine humanities students were treated to a special lunch and talk from University of the Sunshine Coast associate professor Dr Tristan Pearce as part of world food day on Friday 16 October.

Kids hunger for Asia By JOLENE OGLE A-GRADE humanities students at Sunshine Beach State High School were treated to an Asian feast and a special guest speaker as part of World Food Day on Friday 16 October. World Food Day is a day of action against hunger where people come

together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger and this year the top achieving students gathered to share a meal and learn more about the impacts of global climate change on communities around the world. Students who study humanities learn about geography, various biomes and food security throughout

the world as well as history. Research fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s (USC) sustainability research centre Dr Tristan Pearce joined the students to talk about the impacts of global warming throughout his native Canada. Dr Pearce shared stories of his work in the Canadian Arctic where

he investigated how changes in the environment affect the indigenous population’s ability to hunt and create a healthy, nutritious food system. Dr Pearce said he was excited to speak with the students and hoped that by sharing his research and stories he would inspire the students to go out and learn more.

Local police said they were “shocked and “disappointed to charge five people with driving while under the influence of drugs in just over 24 hours during the weekend. Noosa Heads officerin-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said traffic patrols from midnight on Saturday until 6am Monday morning found five people were driving with drugs in their system and a number of the offenders were also charged with possession after searches revealed quantities of cannabis. Sen Sgt McReight said six more people were charged with drink driving during the same period while three people were charged with driving without a licence. “It’s disappointing to see so many people driving while under the influence, Sen Sgt McReight said. “Especially when there has been such an emphasis on road safety through state-wide campaigns and through the media. Sen Sgt McReight said people who flout the law and drive while under the influence are not only putting their lives and the lives of others at risk, but they will also void their insurance if an accident does occur. “People are leaving themselves open to serious issues, he said.

Estate’s flood works finished By JOLENE OGLE MORE than a year after first announcing flood works for Tewantin’s Daintree estate, the three tiers of government have united once more to give the project the tick of approval. Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Wide Bay MP Warren Truss, Noosa MP Glen Elmes and Noosa mayor Noel Playford gathered at the estate to chat with residents about the now complete works. Over $1.3 million was spent on the flood mitigation works after more than forty homes were flooded in a 2012 deluge, which the council called an “extreme event”. A long wall has been built along a section of the bushland as part of the project, designed to work with a bund wall to redirect flood waters away from local homes. A channel at the entry of the estate has been widened to allow for extra water, with the land removed from that zone used to build the bund wall at the rear of the estate. Residents said they were still worried the new wall and wider channel might not survive a severe weather event this summer but Noosa Council project manager Adam Britton said deep consideration was given to the works prior to starting the project. “Our priority was to keep the houses floodfree and we’ve achieved that with our modelling,” he said. Mayor Noel Playford said incorrect prior flood modelling was part of the reason homes were affected in the 2012 weather event. “Before this development was approved there was flood modelling, but they got it wrong. That’s why there was a problem - they got this badly wrong,” he said. “But technology is a lot better these days. We can fly aeroplanes over and work out where the catchments are because of the technology that couldn’t be done years ago. “Sometimes in God we trust, sometimes in hydrologists.”

In the heat of the action By ANDREW BELL IT was a hot Friday afternoon in the school holidays when the Doonan Rural Fire Brigade got the call to join the strike team and head to Kingaroy early the next morning to help with a wild fire on a property. Along with appliances and members from neighbouring Sunshine Coast brigades of Eumundi, Ilkley and District, Palmwoods, Tinbeerwah, Black Mountain and Kureelpa, three members hurriedly packed a bag, set ‘record’ for the Grand Finals, kissed the dog, patted the wife, and jumped into one of the yellow trucks bound for Kingaroy. The fire was successfully brought under control with no major loss to property or pasture and a number of other incidents in the area were also ably dealt with. The days were long, starting out early and not finishing until well past 8pm but all teams returned home on the following Monday, safe and sound. So, what is a strike team and why are they formed? Simply put, strike teams are

groups of yellow fire brigade vehicles that are crewed with volunteer members that are deployed out of their usual area of operation to areas in need. Also, urban ‘Red’ appliances and crews can be deployed to help out where there may be the potential for structural fires. Crews come under the control of a local incident officer who is responsible for deploying the appliances to areas of need and ensuing the logistics of the operation are in order. One of the most important aspects of this function is local knowledge, identifying unmarked tracks and fire breaks, natural hazards and, of course, where water can be supplied to. They can also request additional crews, aircraft support and heavy plant, such as graders and bulldozers, to help bring the fire under control. Strike team crews are housed in the local community, usually a motel and meals in the field are provided in bagged or takeaway form. Strike teams form an essential part of the arsenal to fight fires in rural Queensland and those volun-

teers that man them always come away with a sense of achievement and worth. It’s important for drivers to remember not to attempt to overtake a whole strike team because the convoy can be quite long. They should be aware that these little yellow trucks are carrying large loads of water and can’t stop easily for a car. For their safety and that of the brigade, other road users should be cautious around yellow trucks. They should not drive over hoses or witches’ hats, they should drive carefully past any area of operation, be patient when the brigade is moving appliances and don’t forget brigades are made up of volunteers who have left their homes, families and jobs to support the wider community.

Poppi’s out of the bottle ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Poppi Eccleston from Peregian Springs has joined the cast of the Ballet Theatre of Queensland’s upcoming production of Aladdin. Auditioning alongside hundreds of hopeful dancers from across the state, Poppi was successful in her audition for a junior role in the production and is the only junior cast member from the Sunshine Coast. The St Andrew’s Anglican College student said she was surprised to be selected given the number of people auditioning. “I auditioned for Aladdin mainly to gain experience with the audition process so that when I’m older I’ll be more comfortable doing them,” said Poppi. “I was so surprised and excited to find out that I was successful,” Poppi said. Poppi has been a ballet dancer for four years and her mum Penny said this achievement has been a great confidence booster. “We are just so extremely proud of Poppi’s achievement. “It is such a joy for a parent to see their child rewarded for all the hard work they put into their passion,” Penny said. The Ballet Theatre Queensland’s production of Aladdin is showing at The Playhouse, QPAC in Brisbane from 20 to 23 January 2016.

Long-time local experts Craig Arthars, Warrick Brailey and the team are ready to celebrate the opening of the new Cooroy store.

Long-time local experts Craig Arthars, Warrick Brailey and the team are ready, willing and able to take care of all types of motor vehicle servicing, repairs and maintenance, while Tony Schreiber will be on hand to assist with all automotive parts and power equipment needs. The Madill Garage Cooroy opening day celebrations will run from 10am to 1pm on Saturday 24 October with a free barbecue, snowcones, loads of giveaways and kids’ entertainment including games and face painting.

LETTERS Where's my vote? WHILE I always follow your extensive coverage of Noosa Council matters with great interest, I continue to be frustrated at not being allowed to vote in council elections. As a part-time resident but full ratepayer of Noosa, I also spend time in Brisbane where I am registered to vote. I believe I am not the only part-time resident Noosa ratepayer who would like to have a greater say in local affairs through the local ballot box. It is time that voting laws were changed to allow all ratepayers a say in how their rates are spent. Nick Smit, Noosa Heads.

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.net.au

lors having community interests at heart is the way to go. Very disappointed to learn that the Greens have taken this decision even though in the past I have voted Green. Mike Sackett, Noosa.

Wrong path

READING recently the letters regarding the next Noosa Council elections and the pats on the back for certain councillors and also who appears to be favourite for our next Mayor. We are aware Noel Playford is retiring and I also understand so is Bob Abbott. I have to say the whole elected team chosen by the shire deserve a pat on the back and a bucket full of accolades as I think some of their critics forget they took on a whole new business with departments and administration which all had to be set up on a shoestring as we was robbed. The next council walks into a place with offices and the necessary paperwork and guidelines already there just to be adhered to. A few tweaks here and there maybe. It appears the CEO and mayor and the team, those we never get to see have it all under control. One thing we have in our favour is our mayor - we choose and can hire and fire him or her and not that excuse for democracy the caucus. Well done to you all and let's look forward to a continuation of the excellent service we have had and the pleasure of being lucky enough to be a Noosa resident. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.

To the thousands of rural, hinterland, and Noosa beachside residents under the new Sunshine Coast Airport (SCA) flight paths, please go to https://www.facebook.com/sunresdev to see them, and sign the petition. At top left is a link to the ResDev website for more information. Write to the the Co-Ordinator General at: Barry.Broe@coordinatorgeneral.qld.gov.au addressing any concerns on the lack of consultation by SCA of the opportunity to submit to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) (were you consulted by mail?), and definite future noise issues. ALL suburbs under the flight paths will be overflown 24/7, some at about 200 metres, yet there’s been little to no public consultation by SCA beyond the immediate vicinity of the airport. Most will be surprised at noise and air pollution resulting from the proposal, and how severely it will impact their lives, and property values. The misinformation in the EIS is so significant that it is flawed, and therefore should be rejected. The proposal will never compete with Brisbane Airport's expansion occurring now, and passengers will never be able to fly to the rest of the world from SCA as cheaply and conveniently as they can from Brisbane. Services to all Australian East coast cities and NZ are possible now at no added expense. If it’s approved, SC Council rates will increase by at least $200/ year to fund the minimum $347 million cost! This is your last opportunity to have a say. Mark Jones, Project Officer, Coolum Residents Association.

Propaganda push

Forced to respond

I SEE Jeff Nuske is at it once again peddling his anti-council propaganda (Noosa Today, 8 October). Not to let the truth get in the way of a good yarn, Nuske again claims council has scrapped any of its 2014-'15 financial year works projects that weren’t completed by 30 June. But council has confirmed in the press that these projects are now complete or soon will be. Mr Nuske either doesn’t read the papers or he’s too blinded by his own bias to care. To describe Noosa Council as 'fiscally stressed’ is just absurd when, earlier this year, the Queensland Treasury Corporation gave it top marks for its financial health. I guess this sort of rubbish is to be expected from Jeff Nuske and his fellow letter-writing conspirators John Lobb, Dom Massoni and Kev Fuller. The surprise is that a responsible local newspaper knowingly and continually publishes such blatant nonsense. You do this community a huge disservice. H. Saunders, Sunshine Beach.

I FEEL compelled to respond to the comments made by a few naive readers in relation to Bob Jarvis’s letter, in particular, Fran Bate’s aggressive suggestion that Bob’s comments should not be printed. Freedom of speech is under serious threat in this country and Bob has as much right to state his opinions as you have not everyone took offence. In order to be informed about a subject, one must research or educate one’s self. I suggest Sally Platt-Hepworth might have a better understanding of why Bob is studying the Koran if she read a book called The Story of Mohammed by Harry Richardson. In it, the writer advises he too studied Islamic doctrine and history, soon realising that almost all of what is conveyed to us regarding Islam, its goals and its influence on the actions and beliefs of Muslims, is entirely wrong. This lack of understanding has been the root cause of some horrendous policy failures which tend to dominate our daily news. It is also clear that the reason for these failures is an almost total lack of knowledge of the doctrine of Islam amongst all sections of Western Society. Mohammed created a religious and political movement called Islam, to which a quarter of the world’s population belongs and is the

LENSCAPE

THANK you to Rebecca Brimlecombe who sent in this striking photo of a Pacific Baza. Rebecca said she “stalked” the beautiful bird to capture this unique shot. “I was stalking the poor thing half the day until I got lucky and he landed on a low branch beside a raised garden,” she said. Rebecca said the Pacific Baza was being “buzzed” by native miner birds, hence why he is fanning his wings. “The harassment from smaller birds is well-deserved as nestlings or, in our case, whole broods of ducklings are easy prey for this strikingly-marked crested hawk,” she said. If you have a photo of Noosa’s landscape or wildlife, we would love to see it. Send your photo to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au world’s fastest growing religion by far, the influence of which currently stretches into more aspects of our societies than almost any of us realise. In case you hadn’t noticed, Muslim populations are exploding across the world as Western birth rates plummet. It is common knowledge (to most of us) that Muslims have publicly stated they intend to outbreed Australians within 50 years. What do you think that brings with it? You may have no objection to being governed under Sharia Law (read Harry’s book and see what this means, especially for women) or having no option other than to eat halal certified food, for example, but I definitely do! And Michael Rowbotham is correct that racism should be challenged, however Islam is not a race. Islam is an ideology that dictates how Muslims should live. Also, if you want to talk about the many wars committed under the name of Jesus, here’s a current day stat you may not be aware of - almost all terror attacks (more than 22,000 since 9/11) are carried out by Muslim Jihadists. And to G. Bright I say you are the ill-informed one. Read and inform yourselves, instead of pushing out letters of ignorance. Well spoken, Bob. I and many others applaud your honesty and informed opinions about this huge threat that hovers above our country. R. Davies, Doonan.

A strange beat WHAT beats in Benny’s head? Reading Benny Pike's column in Noosa Today last (8 October) I initially thought it was satire or a humour piece, but when I got to the end it became apparent that it was largely what he thinks. Is this man on drugs? To suggest that Tony Wellington has not had the experience, or does not have the skills, to be mayor, and in the next paragraph to suggest that one-time councillor, Sandy Bolton, could be “cabinet secretary“ is beyond belief. The drinks man, Hey Bill, for mayor is surely a joke though. Tony Wellington did the very hard yards on the Sunshine Coast Council representing our needs, against well-funded and well organised opposition to de-amalgamation and has for the last three years worked closely with, and I believe has the endorsement of, our current mayor Noel Playford. At a local level, in my involvement over the last 12 years with many community groups here in Pomona I am really impressed with Tony’s intelligence, professionalism and attention to detail. Refreshingly, he returns phone calls promptly, comes to AGMs and community meetings when invited, answers his phone on the weekend, and is generally helpful. What a breath of fresh air. It is early days in the mayoral race but at this stage Wellington gets my vote. Michael Egan, Pomona.

A star all her own making AUDREY Cooper (nee Hungerford) is one of the first people to be honoured with a special star to be placed on the Cooroy Christmas tree this year. Audrey is being remembered by her grand-daughter and Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president Danielle Taylor. Audrey, 94, was born in Woombye in April 1921 and had a lot of wonderful stories of her country life as a child with her sibling. She had many loves but cherished her family most of all. She often commented that as long as she was surrounded by her loved ones, she had everything. She raised her two girls, Raylee and Robyn, on her own which would have been a formidable task at the time. She al-

ways had an incredibly positive attitude and her advice to others who were feeling unhappy was to keep your cup at least half full. Her own cup was mostly overflowing. She had plenty of joy to spread around leaving most people happier after being in her presence. She loved her puzzles and was a master of suduko and together with her sister Claudia would finish the Woman’s Day crossword nearly every week. Audrey loved writing letters and poetry and had written an extensive life story which is in the process of being published. FRIDAY ENVIRONMENT FORUM

COOROY HEALING GROUP

ABORIGINAL stories tell of a time when areas of the Australian coast, now long submerged, were once dry land. They are known from at least 21 places from our northern coastline to the south. The Aboriginal occupation of Australia dates from at least 50,000 years ago so unquestionably Australians lived through the last great ice age when the sea level fell to about 120 metres below its present level, profoundly transforming Australia’s coasts, before rising again. Professor Patrick Nunn of Sunshine Coast University is guest speaker at Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum this week. He will explain how these stories have survived for more than 7000 years and how they might inform strategies for adapting to present day climate change. Come along to hear the discussion from 10am for morning tea, with the forum commencing at 10.30am at the Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. Meet the Interpretive Birders at 8.30am in the car park to enjoy birds of Wallace Park, and visit www. noosaparks.org.au for more information. All welcome.

WANT to improve your health and well-being? Come along to Lotus Inner Light Healing Group where we have a range of qualified healing professionals to help you, eg: reiki, massage and psychic readers. Thirsty Merc.

Still thirsty for more music By TANIA PHILLIPS

already, stepping in to help. And while their friends are never far from their thoughts it seems like being on stage is the best medicine for the band. Thirsty burst onto the Australian music landscape 12 years ago - an intoxicating blend of intelligent lyrics and foot-tapping music in a world of sometimes over-written inane words and samey rhythms. They were a musical breath of

fresh air and their catchy music and the rather heart-felt lyrics of lead vocalist Rai Thistlethwayte struck a chord. Since then they’ve produced radio staples like 20 Good Reasons, Someday Someday, Mousetrap Heart and In The Summertime. Fast forward to 2015 and after selling over 200,000 records with Warner Music, this time around the band tackled the recording and release of their fourth studio album –

Shifting Gears – and first new material in five years, independently, and very differently. And then they headed out on tour and while The Good Life Tour hasn’t been what Rai, Phil Stack (bass) and Matt Smith (guitar) expected it has taught them a lot. Thirsty Merc will play Saturday 24 October at Villa Noosa, Noosa. Tickets available from www.villanoosa.com.au/whats_on

IT’S hard not to know Thirsty Merc are touring – or maybe it is. A month ago the band were in the news for all the wrong reasons with an accident claiming the life of their stage manager Shane Cooper and putting their drummer Mick Skelton in hospital. And while it would be trite to say

“the show must go on”, Thirsty Merc are soldiering on and according to lead vocalist Rai Thistlewayte “musically very strong”. “There is a lot of love in the room from the crowd it’s been amazing – the support has been a bit overwhelming it has been amazing from everyone,” Rai Thistlethwayte said. The music community has banded behind them – with a drummer, due to play on some of the gigs

A feast of fine films IN a first, the Noosa Film Society is presenting a weekend of internationally acclaimed films that everyone can enjoy. Named Love and Adventure, these award-winning movies are being screened at the Noosa 5 cinema complex from Friday 6 November until Sunday 8 November. Recent co-host of ABC At the Movies David Stratton has given his stamp of approval to the program, saying: “it looks to be an exciting and stimulating weekend of quality cinema”. The selection of films cross all genres from ro-

mance and drama to comedy and suspense, so movie lovers can be sure to find a movie they just have to see. The festival starts on Friday 6 November with a party and celebration in the Coffee Club next to Noosa 5 before a screening of The Lobster. Starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, this is a wickedly funny and bizarre satire of our couple-fixated society. Tickets for the opening celebrations and the film are $25 per person. Six more films will be shown over Saturday and Sunday and tickets are $15

The two-day festival kicks off on Friday 23 October and runs to Saturday 24 October, with film screenings to be held at The J, Noosa Drive, Noosa Heads. The inaugural Noosa Surf Film Festival (NSFF) aims to be a platform for the increasing amount of creativity and talent rising throughout the community and the world through surf culture. Highlights of the festival include an art show to be held on the opening night, Friday 23 October, at The J. There'll be plenty of stalls, live music and festival vibes on offer, plus a free screening of local surfboard shaper Tom Wegener’s For The Love at Threads Project,. JOE Cocker is a name that resides in glory in the rock world. His gritty tune and all-out performances were capable of moving your soul. Now there is a chance to relive the emotion that Joe Cocker brought to the stage with The Mad World Blues Band’s tribute show, ‘The Joe Cocker Experience’. The band pays their respect to an idol by giving everything they’ve got to the crowd. And now, this tribute show, which has received rave reviews from all across Southeast Queensland, will be appearing at the Tewantin Noosa RSL. The seven-piece band consists of diverse and talented musicians from across the local blues and rock scene including Bruce Bird, Paul Rea, Steve Turner, Ian Lock, Simon Spencer, Gillian Kristensen, and Ellie Jane Gibbs. Each one of these artists have experience playing cover and original works throughout Australia and overseas in their chosen style, but despite varying talents, all these musicians share a love for what they do.

The Joe Cocker Experience will be at the Tewantin Noosa RSL, on Friday 23 November, at 8pm. The band is led by singer Bruce Bird, known for his performances at blues and rock festivals across

Australia and widely regarded as having a Joe Cocker voice like no other.

“Everyone in the band grew up as huge fans of Joe Cocker’s gritty sound and passion, and we view him as one of the most iconic musicians in rock history, with a voice like no other. We’ve worked very hard to create a show that celebrates this passion and honours Cocker’s legacy. Paul Rea, who plays keyboards in the tribute show, even had the experience of playing with the man himself when Cocker toured Brisbane in 1981,” Bruce said. The two-hour show presents favourite songs from Joe Cocker’s extensive catalogue including Cry Me A River, Feelin’ Alright, With a Little Help from My Friends, Delta Lady, Up Where we Belong, Unchain My Heart, Many Rivers to Cross, You are So Beautiful, Leave your Hat On, and many more. The Joe Cocker Experience will be at the Tewantin Noosa RSL, on Friday 23 November, at 8pm. Tickets are free for members and just $10 for non-members. Come on down and enjoy a cold drink, something to eat, and the hits of yesteryear.

tionally renowned guests such as body paint artist Emma Hack, multi-award winning body painter Julie Tattam and airbrush expert Symon Molony added star power to this year’s festival. Noosa Today’s photographer was on hand to capture all the festival action.

Calcium is the key IN honour of World Osteoporosis Day on 20 October, Dairy Australia has launched a series of contemporary meal planners that reflect the Australian Dietary Guidelines to help Aussies combat their low calcium consumption and improve overall diet. Calcium is the number one nutrient of concern in the Australian diet, with more than half the population not getting enough, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Accredited dietitian Emma Glassenbury said calcium was the key mineral required for strong, healthy bones with a low intake linked to osteoporosis and poor bone density. “Dairy foods are the richest source of calcium in the Australian diet,” she said. “Combining dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yogurt with weight bearing exercise and vitamin D is vital to help your bones stay strong and mobile as you age.” The Australian Dietary Guidelines’ recommendations for milk, cheese, yogurt and/or alternatives vary from 2.5 to 4 serves a day, depending on age and gender. A serve is defined as a cup (250ml) of milk, three-quarters of a cup (200g) of yogurt or two slices (40g) of cheese. Dairy Kitchen manager at Dairy Australia Amanda Menegazzo is excited to launch the meal planners in time for World

Osteoporosis Day explaining they have been designed to show people how to get adequate dairy into each day along with other core food groups. “Planning balanced, great tasting meals every day is no mean feat,” Amanda said. “So, the Dairy Kitchen teamed up with dietitians to develop this series of five-day

meal planners, taking the hard work out of deciding what to cook. “Not every Australian has the same nutritional needs, likes, dislikes and time on their hands, so we’ve combatted this by developing meal planners for a number of different life stages.” It’s quick - and free - inspiration, tailored to your require-

ments, that will be delivered to your inbox, seasonally. Sign up for the free Dairy Kitchen Meal Planner at www.legendairy.com. au/mealplanner. The Dairy Kitchen has kindly shared two favourite recipes from the meals planners to help Noosa Today readers boost their calcium intake.

NEXT Monday 26 October the state will turn pink in celebration of Cancer Council Queensland’s official Pink Ribbon Day. Hundreds of dedicated Cancer Council Queensland staff and volunteers will be out in force across the state selling pink merchandise to raise vital funds for breast and gynaecological cancer research and patient support. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift called on the community to join together in a show of strength for women impacted by breast and gynaecological cancers. “Every year in Queensland around 4000 women will be diagnosed with breast or a gynaecological cancer and around 800 women will die from a women’s cancer,” Ms Clift said. “Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day helps raise vital funds for the one in six Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with a women’s cancer in their lifetime. “CCQ is working hard every day to beat women’s cancers through prevention programs, support services and world-class cancer research. “The good news is that our hard work is making a difference. Thanks to prevention and early detection programs and improved treatment options, more Queenslanders are surviving women’s cancers. “Nearly 45,500 Queensland women are alive today after a diagnosis of women’s cancer in the past 25 years.”

THERE are many types of people living within our communities. After several decades, one starts to become aware of two in particular one is the type that merely exists; the other is the one who not only lives in, but also for, the community. With our society becoming more and more dependent on voluntary organisations, it is those who live for their community that become our backbone. Without them many organisations would crumble. One such person who lives for his community is Len Tyler. Len would be known to many of our locals because of his tireless work not only for the Rotary Club of Noosa but also Noosa Community Radio 101.3FM. Born in Melbourne in 1941, Len spent his young years growing up in the suburbs. He describes himself as being a curious child, but one who was fortunate to grow up in a great family environment with cousins, aunties, uncles and grandparents. During his early years perhaps some of his most unforgettable times were those spent in New Guinea where he worked as a manager for Elect Services. It was also during this period Len took his first steps into the world of radio when he started working part time as a DJ, interviewer and educational programmer, on the ABC’s 9PA and 9RB. Working with him on these programs was a young graduate who impressed Len with his intellect and determination. His name was Michael Somare. It was this young man who, years later was destined to become famous as Prime Minister of New Guinea. “In those days I admired him for his aspirations to lead his people. However his rise to power changed a lot of his thinking and I now have a totally different view of his leadership,” Len said. Living and working within the realm of New Guinea was an eye opener, for it was during those years Len in his own words learnt “what poverty and deprivation was all about”. On returning to Australia Len did a study course then entered commercial radio going straight into Capital City 7HT Hobart. “However after three years I felt there was nowhere to advance in Hobart so I returned to the the mainland and started a degree in journalism. However it was during this time that I renewed my friendship with a lovely young lady named Helen, a lady I had met years previous during a visit to the baths at Mildura; it was not long after this that we married. Later we became the parents of two wonderful boys.” It was in his thirties that Len made his move into the co-operate world, a decision he has never regretted. “I started my new life with Kempthorne, a major company within the electrical business; a good move very successful. From there I moved into Capital Goods/infrastructure; information communication technology (ICT) with NEC for a period of 10 years.” With careers in the field of ICT in high demand and the industries continued growth, opportunities were many. As a result of this Len seized on the moment joining Fujitsu Australia to become national manager for corporate and strategic business. It was during his time with Fujitsu that he became aware of a strange phenomenon. “Despite my successes on radio doing interviews and such like I feared public speaking. After a discussion with a higher management I decided I had better join Toastmasters. I did and it worked just fine. No more butterflies.’’ With his reputation now well established in the corporate world, it was only to be expected that other companies would make overtures; so it was that Alcatel in Victoria made an offer not to be ignored.

A man who lives for his community - Len with Helen.

A man who lives for his community - Len with Helen. However because of the demands that go with corporate life, important family time was being lost. “On reaching the big 6-0, Helen and I decided it was time to slow down, retire and move from Melbourne to to the Mornington Peninsula; but having holidayed at Noosa we decided to stop kidding ourselves, and here we are,” It was during the 1990s that Len had his first introduction to Rotary at the Melbourne South Rotary Club. “Here was a world of service with people of integrity, achievers, doers, real planners. I went on to hold directorships for six years, becoming president-elect in my final year. After retiring and shifting to Noosa, I joined the Rotary Club of Noosa, found new friends, new challenges, including Shelter Boxes, and went on to become president. “It is the Shelter Boxes that really got my attention. It is a transportable plastic box that provides emergency accommodation and other survival essentials for disaster victims. Stored in Australia and other places around the world at rapid deployment centers, it is ready for dispatch at very short notice to anywhere in the world. Some years ago, they were used to assist people of Innisfail, North Queensland, and more recently in areas hit by big floods and cyclones. “Then there was the formation of a new Combined Probus Club. Started in Noosa in February 2010, Probus is a social club that enables people to enjoy the fellowship fun and friendship of likeminded people.” In 2014 for his outstanding contribution to Rotary, Len was appointed to the position Assistant Governor Sunshine North District 9600 for three years. A high honor indeed. The radio seeds buried deep within the soul of this man during his New Guinea days have not died. Every Wednesday from 9am to noon you can listen to his melodious voice on Community Radio 101.3fm as he brings us news, music and interviews with people from all walks of life. A highlight of Len's programs are the interviews with our youth. These create the opportunity for the voice of our young to be heard. By doing this, they do for a time reach out to us all. Rotarian since 1990 and a voice on Community Radio; Len Tyler, definitely one of Our People.

Four seasons in extremis Life of

brine PHIL JARRATT

THE week started with us trying to cycle through a pitch black, freezing cold, one-kilometre railway tunnel, and ended with a cruisy ride down a stony track to a beachside winery for cheese platters and the best Hawkes Bay pinot gris you could imagine. So, as cycling goes, I suppose you could say it had its ups and downs. New Zealand does tend to have wind and weather in extremis, especially in spring, so we can’t really complain that we’ve had four seasons in one day, as Neil Finn might put it. And if our ride along the Hauraki Rail Trail at the start of the week was a wee bit damp, bleak and windy, it was enjoyably challenging nonetheless. And the Landscapes Ride along the Hawke’s Bay coast and wetlands in warm sunshine last Friday was nothing short of superb. A decade or more ago, when we lived in France, we used to do a lot of pleasurable cycling along coastal tracks and river flats, stopping here for a coffee and croissant, there for a wine and cheese, but to be honest, we’re a bit rusty now. After the 50-kilometre rail run, we had to vacate the saddle for a couple of days while our butts recovered, but last Friday’s wineries run was totally painless, particularly after a few tastings at the Clearview and Elephant Hill Estates. All of the Hawke’s Bay wineries I’ve managed to sample in two visits have been great, but the distinct contrast between the Elephant Hill and Clearview properties, almost next door to each other along the Cape Kidnappers road, was as intriguing as it was appealing. Elephant Hill is modern, chic and just a little daunting, although the view to the coast across the infinity pool, while you sample the signature blend Le Phant Blanc, is just about unbeatable. Established by German winemakers Reydan and Roger Weiss about a dozen years ago,

Elephant Hill now has vineyards across the Bay area, but their holdings on the Te Awanga coast make their statement about quality, with the main building, housing restaurant and tasting rooms, reflecting the natural colours of the coastline. Clearview, on the other hand, is old school cool, a refreshingly humble jumble of buildings set in a beautifully wild garden, with table-tops set on wine barrels and the restaurant’s fare simple and flexible all day long. Where they get serious however, is with their wines. As I write this, I’m sipping on a Black Reef Blush rose, which is seriously good, but no better than the Haumoana Pinot Gris I had for lunch. Ah, but enough about the wine, time to consider the ride 25 kilometres back into town. I’ve yet to see a booze bus on a cycle path, but you never know. And since this is theoretically a surf column, I should point out that just along from the wineries, Te Awanga Point offers huge potential as a rock and sand right-hander, but was fortuitously flat this glowing Friday afternoon. Our base for these recent Hawke’s Bay adventures has been the pleasant town of Napier, much of which was flattened by an earthquake in 1931, but rebuilt in the art deco style over the next few years. The result is a charming city centre, if a little try-hard around the edges, with a few good restaurants and cafes. These past couple of evenings, we’ve enjoyed our apres-bike sunset cocktails at the street tables of the Churchill Champagne Bar at the County Hotel, one of the few major buildings downtown that pre-dates the earthquake. And if you happen to find yourself in Napier, a cool cafe called Groove Kitchen Espresso, on Tennyson Street, has the best coffee and breakfast menu I’ve encountered in a long while. After getting the tip from the friendly barman at the Churchill, we ate there every morning and found it hard to leave to get on with the day. Now it’s back to the surf, with a swell on the way and the Mahia Peninsula beckoning.

Calypso with rescuer Ty. Is that a parrot on your shoulder? There’s been some distinctly piratey behaviour happening in Noosa in our absence (and a happy 40th, Jay!), but thanks to a sharp-eyed young man named Ty, one parrot of our acquaintance has found its way home to its owner. Our dear friend, the artist Rachel Newling, had barely arrived at her new home in Noosaville, and was making a temporary aviary for her two Eclectus parrots, Calypso and Sonny, when Calypso was frightened by something and flew off. Five days later, when despite a poster and social media campaign, it seemed all hope was lost, Ty’s mum phoned with good news. Quick-thinking Ty, who had seen the poster of Calypso, spotted the bird in his backyard,

threw a laundry basket over it and fed it some apple to keep it occupied while mum rang the number on the poster. Well done, Ty! Everyone loves a happy ending.

Bennett shines with bat

Great start to softball season

By RANDALL WOODLEY

WARM conditions greeted the softballers as they started the summer season. First up were the U15s, and Redsox got off to a flyer as the Dodgers were still blowing off the cobwebs. The Dodgers came back a bit, but it was too late and the Redsox took the points. Dylan was good with Dodgers helping the new players learn the game while Ethan and Riki looked like they had not missed a beat in the off season. Next was the U13s, and it was Redsox versus Redsox and it was played in good spirits as the new and old players combined as did the coaches. Meanwhile, it was Dodgers slammers up on diamond one and again the game was played as it should be in good spirits. It was a good mix of old and new players. Erin had a good game as did Jack and Chloe Murray, Lachlan was in everything as usual. The U17s slugged it out in the heat in a bit of a muck up game but still all had fun. This was, of course, followed by the seniors and it must be mentioned another Clifford came out of retirement to play. Clinton was still trying to put every ball onto the next field while Gary and Simon did apparently have a run feast down there. Other mentions were Rylee Anderson who was ready a long time before the game (keen for her first run), so we will be at it again this Saturday at the Noosa grounds. The club caters for four-year-olds upwards in the games, so come on down and have a look; juniors from 8.30am and seniors from 1pm.

ALEX Bennett starred with the bat as Tewantin-Noosa under 16As batted themselves into a strong position on day one of their cricket match against Maroochydore at the weekend. The team declared at 9-220 with Bennett scoring a solid 62. At stumps, Maroochydore were 1-20 and will resume their run chase this weekend. Meanwhile, the Under 12b Gold TewantinNoosa junior side found themselves involved in a unique game of cricket on Saturday, playing a tied match with rivals Nambour. TNT batted first and were 3-108 with their opponents finishing their day at 8-108 . Best performers for TNT were Dylan Hayes with 26 not out and Kye Porter with 3-13. Meanwhile, the Under 10s Gold Team, playing at home on Friday night, were involved in an enjoyable and exciting game of cricket. In the end they scored 62, going down narrowly to Coolum Red who scored 79 runs. The U12a Thunder continued their great start to the season, beating Maroochydore Red.

Alex Maxwell taking a swing. Red batted first, making 4-88 with Thunder finishing with 120. Leading scorers on the day were Ben Stewart 25, Nick Roughly 18 not out and Cooper Langan 16 not out. Mitch Langan starred with 51 as the Under 14As scored 5-217 in their game against Maleny at Maleny. After their 10 overs, Maleny were 2-25 at stumps with Kade North taking the two wickets.

Under 14B played the Caloundra team at their home ground. Batting first Caloundra scored 111 off their allotted 30 overs. However, the TNT team could not reach this target and lost the game. A good victory by Caloundra and an early reminder of how the game of cricket can change week by week. Under 12 B Maroon The team played a nail-biter against SC Grammar at Tewantin on Saturday. The TNT team lost by just two runs, with Grammar making 2-49 and TNT 1- 47 - both after 20 overs. Meanwhile, in the senior cricket the four teams played Day one of their two-day matches. The seconds, third and fifths all fared well after day one, and each team is in a good position to win their games, either on the first innings or outright. The firsts are in trouble being bowled out for 45 against Gympie. Gympie already have the first innings points, declaring at 6-153.

District night pennant opens In the

Fishy families out in force By JACK MANGROVE MUMS, dads and the kids have been having a great time fishing the Noosa River! The Gympie Terrace Stretch of the Noosa River has again showed why it is one of the premier spots on the Sunshine Coast for a day out with the family. With the sensational weather we had last weekend, families were out in force. The kids where entertained, catching whiting bream and flathead along the banks of the river. Down towards the dog beach, there have been good numbers of whiting with some real elbow slappers among them.

Prawns, yabbies and blood worms have been the favoured baits, soft plastics and poppers have also done the job on the whiting. Down towards the river mouth, tailor, trevally and large flathead have all been taken. Live baits, pilchards and mullet strips have been the bait of choice. Flathead head offshore to spawn at this time the year, so most river mouths on the sunny coast are holding bigger breeding females. Just remember anything over 75cm must be returned. Further up the river, the Tewantin Ski Run area has produced flathead, trevally and quality bream, soft plastics have been the key here with the brighter reds

and pink colours doing most of the damage. Down towards Woods Bays and the Sound, trevally have also been hammering small baitfish as they make their way into the river. First light is by far the best time to target these fish. Offshore things have been equally sensational, yes the wind has been up all little but not enough to stop anglers from heading out. The charter boats have been heading up to Double Island and bagging out on some sensational fish with teraglin jew, pearl perch, snapper sweet lip and red emperor all hitting the decks. Up on North Reef, it has been a

Noosa celebrates first Straddie THE Noosa Boardriders Club have taken out the coveted Straddie Assault for the first time ever. The Straddie Assault is Australia’s longest running teams surfing competition with a 32year history and as an invitation only event, just 16 of Australia’s premier clubs from Lennox Heads to Noosa took part this year. The Noosa Boardriders Club (NBC) win comes on the back of second place at the Kirra Teams challenge earlier this year showing Noosa is producing some great results and is one of the strongest clubs at the moment. Competitors at the Straddie Assault included Ethan Trotman, who came second in the Under 16 round, Aaron Kelly who came first in the Under 18 round, Harry Bryant who came in with a second in the Under 18 round, Thomas Cervi who finished the opens category with a first place win, followed by Hayden Cervi who also took out a first place win in opens. Daniel Vardy came in second in the over 30s, Tori Farmer came in fourth in the women’s opens and Dean Brady finished the opens category with a first while also taking out the award for best manoeuvre. Thomas Cervi and Aaron Kelly also competed in the teams event and came an impressive third place. Noosa Boardriders Club member Jack Lewis said everyone had an amazing weekend at the championships. “We all worked together as a team, and the spirits were high,” he said. “The Noosa tent on the beach was filled all day with our competitors hearing us cheering and yelling. "We were a solid team supporting each other and so proud to finally walk away with the trophy we have been so close to getting for so many years.”

Over the Rainbow at carnival - for the record Between the

flags RON LANE

THE safety record on all three beaches - Peregian, Sunshine Beach and Noosa - continues and happy to relate no major incidents occurred during the school holiday period. Last weekend was indeed a big weekend for our Nippers with the annual Rainbow Beach Nipper Carnival being contested over the two days. Regarding the success of the carnival, captain of the Sunshine Beach Senior club Scott Summers, summed it up well when he said regarding the whole concept: "The Rainbow carnival is a definite path to life between the flags.’’ Sunshine Beach was represented by some 70 Nippers and club president Craig Law was also supportive in his praise of the carnival. “Rainbow is always a great carnival and this one was no different; it is definitely good for the future of lifesaving,” he said. Noosa's JAC director Sam Smith was also impressed by the weekend. “It really was great; it had everything. Big attendance from the clubs, good weather and tough conditions. Noosa had about 45 competitors and we were pleased with the results. Some events had to be called off because of the sweep, too tough for the smaller Nippers but ok for the bigger kids. It was definitely a great start to the season.” Noosa coach Tom Dritten was very happy. “Our Under 13 boys and girls did well in the Cameron Relay with the girls finishing second and the boys

third in their finals and for the second year in a row Natisha Fox won the Under 12 beach sprint. There were lots of our kids showing promise with Zale Outram, Tommy and Maggie Harmer showing good form. But perhaps our biggest assets were the age managers - they were outstanding. Great all round team effort,” Dritten said. For Noosa community the competition season will really kick off in earnest next week with the kids’ triathlon being contested Wednesday morning on Noosa's Main Beach. This will be followed by the Arena 1000 Ocean Swim on Friday afternoon; Saturday will be a Legends Surf Swim followed on Sunday by the Noosa Triathlon. As in previous years all swim events will be covered by our local lifesavers with Noosa /Peregian, Sunshine and Mudjimba, providing IRB and Rescue Board Patrols. For the first time ever the swim section of the Noosa Tri will be an ocean swim conducted at Noosa's Main Beach. Recently there has been two call outs for our After Hours Emergency Response Group. Happy to say that on both occasions, the incidents finished well with no drama. However there has been one vital factor that has drawn praise from all concerned - the response time. As we have stated on previous occasions, from the time the alarm is raised to the time that all crew personnel are geared up and craft ready for launching is of the utmost importance. This is what we refer to as the Response Time. Fast well trained teams must keep this time to the minimum and happy to relate to our sea-going public, this has been achieved. The response time on the two call-

To all trainers and crews well done. Next week will be a big one for Warrick Redwood. Warrick, a life member of Sunshine, was this year

After taking out silver at the Australian National Muay Thai title on the weekend, Harry Burke of Coolum already has his next fight lined up in the Siam Cup to be held in Brisbane on 14 November.

Harry’s lastminute entry IT WAS a last minute entry into the Australian National Muay Thai titles for Coolum local Harry Burke, but the short notice paid off with the 14-year-old bringing home the silver medal. Harry’s coach Stevie Pye, who has practised Muay Thai for more than 20 years, said Harry was given two days’ notice he was going to compete in the titles, but the young gun came out a winner. “Harry made it to the gold medal fight, coming away with the silver medal,” Stevie said. Harry has been training with Stevie at the Yah Pit Muay Thai studio and can train up to five days a week when preparing for a fight. Stevie said he was proud of his student, who put in a great effort to prepare for the titles. “His medal is well-deserved. He certainly puts in the effort and trains hard,” Stevie said. Harry said the fight was hard and it was a struggle to lose the 4kg needed before the weigh in, but he will have longer to prepare for his next fight in the Siam Cup, a major junior series championship to be held in Brisbane on 14 November, and preparations have already started. “I will start running up and down hills, training hard and preparing for the fight,” Harry said.

Ben Walsh in action at Bathurst.

Walsh wins through NOOSA driver Ben Walsh has secured the 2015 Bathurst Masters Cup Championship in an incidentpacked round of racing. Miss Moneypenny’s owner Walsh claimed the title as part of round five of the Aussie Racing car championship, held in conjunction with the SuperCheap Auto Bathurst 1000. Walsh, supported by Dr Ink Tattoo Removal, Australia’s leading tattoo removal clinics, ran consistently in the top five all weekend. However, it could have all come unstuck in race three when he managed to narrowly avoid an accident that ended up as an international news headline around the globe. However Walsh’s team-mate

Damien Flack wasn’t quite so lucky. Flack pulled alongside Walsh at the fastest part of the circuit, the Conrod Straight, in the battle for third place. He received a slight tap from behind as he pulled alongside Walsh, spearing the car left directly across the front of Walsh’s car, missing him by inches, and resulting in him flipping the car 12 times, clearing a safety fence and then catching fire. Flack was pulled from the wreck unconscious and taken to the trackside medical centre where he regained consciousness before being airlifted to a Sydney hospital. “It was an extremely scary time for all involved while we waited

for news from the medical staff about Damien’s condition,” Walsh said. “It all happened so quickly and I only saw the very beginning of the accident but immediately thought that this was going to be very serious. “We were all extremely relieved when we were told that Damien had woken up.” Flack suffered 12 broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a punctured lung and is expected, in time, to make a full recovery. Walsh went out to race again in race four, starting from third position on the grid for the final race, which was also cut short due to another incident. After the points were tallied, he came out as winner of the Masters Cup.

“I was extremely pleased with how competitive we were this weekend at what is the biggest race of the year at one of the most demanding circuits in the world,” he said. “After not having competed at Bathurst for 16 years, this was always going to be a huge task, but the team delivered me a competitive car and I really feel that I was driving well enough to extract the maximum performance from the Dr Ink Tattoo Removal car. “One of the best parts of the weekend for me was receiving a text from Damien whilst he was in hospital congratulating me.” Walsh is set to hit the track again in five weeks’ time at round six of the Aussie Racing Car Championship to be held at Phillip Island in Victoria.
