COMMERCIAL netting will finish in Corio Bay on 1 April 2018 in a surprise State Government move. Government introduced legislation yesterday to phase out commercial netting in Port Phillip Bay by October 2022 but to close Corio Bay much earlier. The 43 remaining commercial-fishing licenceholders will receive compensation of $27 million, up from $20 million. The Government said it recognised that many commercial netters were multi-generational fishers with strong family connections to the industry. As part of “a clear and fair exit strategy for licence holders, compensation payments offered in the first year would range from $350,000 to $1.6 million. The Government said banning netting would boost recreational fishing. Geelong and District Anglers Association secretary John Hotchin said anglers could not compete with netters. “We’ve been saying the nets need to go for the last 30 years, Mr Hotchin said. “The practice of setting hundreds of metres of nets across areas such as the inner and outer-harbour of Corio Bay has been a long-standing problem. “Our 7000 members from the Bellarine Peninsula and the other thousands of fishers from around the bay view today as a massive step forward toward to achieving a net-free bay. Continued page 5

Double Take

CCTV funding knockback:

Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au

THE COUNTRY-versus-city divide has always existed, even though urban expansion seems to be reaching its tendrils out further and further. Imagine the surprise of South Barwon MP Andrew Katos when he discovered in State Parliament last week that Mulgrave was part of regional Victoria. More specifically, the electorate of Premier Daniel Andrews where a number of bridges are being repaired under the Country Roads and Bridges Program. “All of a sudden his electorate is in country Victoria and bridges in South Barwon and elsewhere around this region are being neglected, an outraged Mr Katos pointed out. Looks like there’s very little bridge building going on in politics in this state. THIS must be the definition of irony. The Qantas executive who made the decision for the airline’s heavy engineering to quit Avalon 18 months ago is now the head of Tullamarine Airport. Tullamarine of course is the main competitor to the fledgling Avalon Airport, which lost a valuable revenue stream when Qantas left. Avalon chief Justin Giddings revealed Qantas

‘It’s sickening’

wanted $42 million to stay and a deal was negotiated with Avalon Airport owners the Fox family and State Government under then premier Ted Baillieu each putting in $21 million. But after all that Qantas upped the ante and said it wanted $96 million. No wonder the Flying Kangaroo finally made a profit this year.

CLIMATE change and politeness have not always been comfortable bedfellows, especially if the letters to the editor column of the Independent is anything to go by. But the two are connected, according to Deakin University researchers, who have found that gannets at Pope’s Eye near Queenscliff are politely refusing to travel into another colony’s territory to find food. And it’s all down to climate change, affecting the seabird’s breeding, because Bass Strait is apparently one of the fastest warming regions in the world. With the gannet’s main diet, pilchard and barracouta, moving south to cooler waters, the gannets are forced to travel further to find food. I suppose we would do the same if our supermarket kept moving away.

A VICTIM of 17 break-ins is shocked the State Government has rejected an application for more surveillance cameras around Geelong. “It’s sickening, said Raw Edge Hairdressing’s Caitlyn Macdonald. “I’ve had three insurance companies quit on me. I’ve spent $63,000 to replace glass and paid over $3000 for roller shutters earlier this year. “That’s made me feel a lot safer but it’s tough. CCTV cameras are a great idea. Other Belmont businesses

shared their concerns. Coffee By Design owner Tony Rankin wanted the cameras after six break-ins in the past nine years. “CCTV cameras wouldn’t only protect shops, they would make the area safer for nearby residents as well, he said. “It’s a real shame to hear the State’s knocked back CCTV funding. I think cameras are a good deterrence because people are aware of being filmed. Belmont Business Association president Greg Aylmore said the suburb’s existing cameras had reduced crime. “We have a camera in Coles car park. We’ve noticed an im-

provement since the camera was brought in - more are needed. The State Government also rejected council funding applications for cameras in central Geelong, Norlane, Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and Drysdale. Cr Jan Farrell, who holds a community safety portfolio, was disappointed. “I’ve asked for feedback so that council can work alongside the Department of Justice on submissions for the next round of funding. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said a federal Safer Streets program could provide a funding alternative.

In brief Bullying claims MORE than 170 staff “experienced” workplace bullying at City of Greater Geelong in the 12 months to July, according to a state-appointed investigator. Susan Halliday reported that 53 of the allegations related to active bullying among the city’s 2670 staff.

Fracking extension STATE Government has “extended” a licence to explore for fracking opportunities between Geelong and the Otways. Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the Lakes Oil’s permit was extended pending the outcome of a state inquiry into fracking, which remains under a moratorium in Victoria.

Gas monitor ANOTHER 20 gas bores will be drilled at the former South Geelong landfill site, Environment Protection Authority has announced. The extra bores, in an area bounded by Gravel Pits Road, Hede Street, Wood Street and Barwon Terrace, will monitor methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen leaks in the now industrial estate.

Lawn landscape GEELONG’S waterfront will get more lawn area around the shark fins as part of landscaping works, the city council has said. The works include removal of gravel areas and the existing “stunted and sickly” trees, replaced with shade trees and new feature lighting.

Mum’s friends rally to make wish come true

A FORUM for Geelong businesses on the ChinaAustralia Free Trade Agreement will be held by the Australia China Business Council at Royal Geelong Yacht Club on 10 November at 1.45pm. But unions worried about the ChAFTA have organised a community forum at Geelong RSL on 26 October at 6.30pm.

WITH three children aged under four, Belmont’s Anj Aitken suffered for months through what she assumed were routine pregnancy aches and pains. But in late August doctors delivered a devastating diagnosis: neuroendocrine cancer. And it was aggressive. She had four or five months to live. The cancer has since forced Anj to close her new podiatry business after years of hard work and study. Her greatest concern now is for the financial security of her family: partner Ian Nielson and Ember, 3, Jordan, 2, and Leilah, four months. To help make her wish, friends have arranged a fund-raising concert at The Barwon Club next month. Emily McDiarmid and Kerrie Boothey, the driving forces behind the event, said the day would celebrate Anj’s life. “Her prognosis has touched the hearts of many strangers who don’t know Anj personally and we’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of community support,” Kerrie said. Anj’s plight had made Emily aware that everyone was “touched by cancer in some way”. “In the past month I’ve come to realise just how prevalent it is,” she said. “We wanted to do everything we could to help.

We couldn’t sit back and count the days.” “As much as my heart is breaking, I feel pride in the restoration of faith in the sense of community we’ve experienced.” Bernie Clifford, whose Bernzerk Productions is helping stage the fund-raiser, said he met Anj at university days. “She’s such a beautiful person. A bit of a hippy but heavy metal at the same time – she’s like a combination of Stevie Nicks and Janice Joplin. “She has a ripper attitude and has really embraced her situation and is driving herself forward.” Barwon Club owner Greg Dodds said he had known Anj since her days as a drummer in an alternative-music band. “This is what she wanted, a big party with everybody she cares about in the one place,” Greg said. “It will be a great chance for her to catch up with some old friends, under horrible circumstances, of course, but music will be bloody good medicine.” The fund-raiser, from midday on 1 November, includes performers Chris Wilson and Sarah Carroll, silent and live auctions and a raffle of prizes including golf with former Cat Billy Brownless and Gold Pass tickets to Elton John’s A Day on the Green. Details are on the Barwon Club Facebook page. The appeal is accepting donations at mycause. com.au/page/110675/anj-aitken or Andrea Louise Aitken fund-raising account 033-679 292177.

A PET cat has survived an arrow shot into an eye, after apparently removing the shaft himself. Basil’s owner, Bell Post Hill student Jordaine Moat, posted her pet’s plight on Facebook during the frantic search for her beloved moggy. Ms Moat posted that Basil was “probably the luckiest cat alive” after she took him to the vet, where he was now recuperating. The drama began when Basil came home in agony with an arrow through one eye. A shocked Ms Moat said she began frantically making emergency calls but the traumatised cat ran away, only to return hours later with the arrow miraculously removed. “My cat Basil just got shot through the eye with an arrow and has run away in shock,” she posted.

but the amazing vet told me he may even get to keep his eye. “I’m in shock honestly. He is completely responsive, meowing, curious, the cuddly baby he always is. “Please keep Basil in your thoughts but he quite possibly got the best out of the worst situation. “What happened to my cat was cruel and inhumane but in these moments the best of humanity is always so much stronger than the worst. “Basil and I are so thankful for our family and friends.” Ms Moat updated her page after the incident attracted widespread media attention, posting that Basil was not “roaming the streets at night when it happened”. “He is not allowed outside after hours,” she posted on Wednesday.

“We think he may still be alive as it was a clean shot but even if he isn’t we would like to find him. “It happened in Geelong around Bell Post Hill shopping centre about an hour ago.” During the search the 20-yearold said the response to her Facebook pleas had been overwhelming. “Still nothing on my gorgeous, lost and injured kitty. The response has been overwhelming. Thankyou all so very much. “Hoping some kind person picked him up and took him to the vet. Basil, please be safe …” But hours later Ms Moat heard her cat meowing outside the door and rushed him to a vet. In a Facebook update she posted: “He is in wonderful care and probably the luckiest cat alive. “Unbelievable. Not only does it seem he has no brain damage

Avalon development’s ‘huge’ benefit for northern suburbs

‘1500 jobs’ in shops at airport By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A MAJOR commercial and retail zone could create thousands of jobs at Avalon Airport, its chief has told Geelong’s business community. “We’re looking to establish a big commercial zone of both industrial and retail sites over the next two or three years,” Justin Giddings said. “All airports have big industrial and retail sectors and it is where the majority of revenue comes from. “This will be huge for jobs, especially

the 3214 postcode area with its current unemployment issues. “Just the retail sector alone, at 40 per cent capacity, would create 1500 jobs and these would be good jobs for the region.” Mr Giddings told the Geelong Business Network breakfast that Avalon would be unprofitable on aircraft operations alone. “It’s a 1700-hectare site and it’s an expensive site to run so the ability to diversify into other revenue streams is important. “We need to restrain costs and diver-

sify revenue. Airlines will only come to Avalon based on low costs. “As an example, we face a $10 million cost on a runway overlay next year.” Mr Giddings said permanent facilities could be developed to accommodate the airport’s popular biennial international airshow. “We have a deal to keep it until 2025 but infrastructure is an issue. “At moment we put up a big marquee every two years and it costs a couple of million dollars to do it.

“We save a lot if we can establish permanent infrastructure for the airshow and we can use the space for other things as well.” Mr Giddings also revealed new uses for hangars that Qantas engineering vacated 18 months ago. “We’ve leased hangar six and we use hangar one regularly for filming. We hosted about 40 or 50 different filming events last year. “The Victorian Government has taken another one for its firebombing aircraft as it has the last few years.”

Netters to go From page 1 Friends of Corio Bay Action Group (FOCBAG) spokesperson Ivan Bereza said he was ecstatic with the date. “We look forward to the day when we can go out there fishing knowing they’re not totally wiped out using nets.” Mr Bereza said Corio Bay was earmarked for earlier closure to netting because its shallow water made it easier for netters to “eradicate“ fish. But Seafood Industry Victoria executive director Johnathon Davey said the earlier closure date for Corio Bay simply added insult to injury. “Corio Bay has been the focus of a lot of the contention between the commercial and recreational industries but you are looking at people being forcefully made redundant from their jobs,” Mr Davey said. “The recreational lobby is jumping up and down with the announcement but when is it enough? It’s forcing people to the wall rather than allowing them to exit of their own choice. “The compensation increase to $27 million doesn’t make it any more reasonable. Spread between 43 it’s not a lot.”

Mr Giddings said a project was underway to improve bus links to Avalon as well as connections with Lara Railway Station. “With the Regional Rail Link there’s a real opportunity to attract people from the western suburbs and even Southern Cross to catch a train to Lara, jump on a shuttle and come to Avalon. “We have to do some more work on making sure the schedules work and eliminating any connection issues,” he said.

Shire rates rise ‘worst’ GOLDEN Plains Shire had the largest rates increases in the state over the past 10 years, according to new State Government figures. The rural shire’s annual increase averaged 8.9 per cent, compared to the state-wide average of 5.99 per cent. Surf Coast Shire was also above the state average at 6.5 per cent. The City of Greater Geelong and the Borough of Queenscliffe were below at 5.3 and 5.4 per cent respectively. The Government released the figures ahead of its cap on rate rises from next year. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said the state-wide increase of almost 6 per cent was an unfair and unsustainable burden on ratepayers. Victorian Local Governance Association’s Sebastian Klein said rural councils would suffer because they had fewer rateable properties but a lot of roads and infrastructure that needed repairs.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A SECOND rally protesting controversial dolphin-killing trawler Geelong Star has been organised for Torquay on Sunday. Barwon Heads’ Jason O’Neill and Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson have organised the rally in conjunction with recreational anglers. Mr O’Neill said anyone who loved the ocean should attend. “We have put the call out to surf lifesavers, surfers and fishermen to participate,” Mr O’Neill said. “This is really about sending a clear message to (Prime Minister) Malcolm Turnbull. We want to tell him that we never wanted the trawlers five years ago, we don’t

- this vessel is no star of Geelong. “There is very significant opposition to this trawler. The scientific evidence to support the fishing of the small pelagic fishery in the manner being proposed is simply not conclusive.” Ms Henderson said trawler operator Seafish Australia had declined an Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation request to avoid high value recreational fishing waters. “This is of particular concern to VR Fish, representing Victoria’s 721,000 recreational fishers. On both environmental and recreational fishing grounds I believe a ban is justified.” The rally begins at 11am Sunday at Torquay Angling Club.

want them now and we don’t want them in the future. “The Australian people never wanted them but the (federal) government let them in and then people like us have to rally about them.” Mr O’Neill organised an earlier rally at Eastern Beach. Ms Henderson said the protest had the full backing of peak state and national fishing bodies. “As a warrior for the environment, I’m determined to stand up and fight for the people of Corangamite on this important issue. After nine dolphin deaths and the resumption of overnight fishing, enough is enough. “To call this vessel the Geelong Star is a real slur on our city

Cost of land ‘eases’ after spike By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG land prices have eased after an “alarming” midyear jump, according to a new report. The median price of a vacant building block in Geelong had settled back to $196,000 after earlier reaching $204,000, said the Housing Industry AssociationCoreLogic RP Data Residential Land Report . Two years ago the median price was $179,000. Despite the lower cost of land,

Region rates fifth for highest prices at $196,000 the Geelong region still ranks as the fifth most expensive regional housing market in the country. The Independent reported last year that Geelong was the 19th most unaffordable property market out of 378 major international centres. Geelong ranked alongside the ex-urban area of outer-London for unaffordability in the 11th annual International Housing Affordability Survey.

But the June quarter figures signalled some relief from tight conditions in the residential land market, said HIA economist Diwa Hopkins said. “Today’s update shows that a rise in land sales was accompanied by an easing off in the pace of price increases in Australia’s residential land market,” Ms Hopkins said. “This compares with previous quarters which saw strong price

increases amid declining land sales. “While the June quarter result is an encouraging development, what needs to occur is similar results being sustained over the longer run. “A larger and more-consistent flow of shovel-ready land needs to be brought online. “For this to happen, policy reform needs to address the key land supply bottlenecks including

unnecessarily long planning delays, slow and insufficient release of residential land, excessive and inappropriate infrastructure funding arrangements and excessive zoning restrictions.” CoreLogic RP Data research director Tim Lawless said the break in the trend of declining land sales was a positive outcome. “A 17 per cent jump in vacant land sales is impressive but land sales remain lower than the June

quarter of last year and follows three quarters where volumes consistently fell and prices rose. “The most encouraging sign is that this quarterly rise in vacant land sales is broad based with five of the six states showing a substantial boost in sales.” Nationally, residential land sales increased 17.6 per cent in the June 2015 quarter while the median residential lot price increased by 0.6 per cent over the quarter to sit 5.2 per cent higher than 12 months previously.

Cash short for dementia care A STATE funding brush-off has left a new Geelong facility for dementia patients with a $400,000 shortfall, according to an Opposition MP. Annie O’Malley House had a “strong argument” for funding from the Victorian Government, said Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay. The Commonwealth had contributed $500,000 and the previous Coalition State Government provided “seed funding” of $25,000 but its Labor replacement had ruled out any contribution, he said. Multicultural Aged Care Services (MACS) needs $2 million to complete Annie O’Malley House, a dementia wing of the organisation’s North Geelong centre. “MACS has approached Member for Lara John Eren and the Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing (Martin Foley) and they have both said the facility should be funded by the Commonwealth as the state has no money for this project,” Mr

Spend $1000 on furniture to get up to

Ramsay said. “There is a strong argument that the state should play a funding role, given that MACS provides a regional service that fills a service gap that is unique to the Geelong region.

NO: Martin Foley. “I suggested to MACS that we have discussions with the Andrews Government about providing the funding and I gave an assurance that I would do what I could to support this request.” Mr Ramsay said he had in-

vited Mr Foley to meet him and MACS to discuss the funding stand-off. “I have now invited the Minister to accompany me to meet with MACS and discuss how the State Government could provide $400,000 to fully fund the construction of the dementia wing,” Mr Ramsay said. Mr Foley rejected Mr Ramsay’s funding call, saying aged care was primarily a federal responsibility. “The Andrews Labor Government is committed to improving the situation of Victorians with chronic illnesses, so that they can live more fulfilling lives. That’s why we stopped the Liberals’ aged care sell-off,” he said. “Mr Ramsay has no shame. His party cut more than $1 billion from health, which had a savage impact on aged care services. “Mr Ramsay knows he should be criticising his Liberal colleagues in Canberra who have primary responsibility for aged care.”

Cancer patient ‘voice’ wins award

40 off %

SPEAKING up on behalf of cancer patients has won a Geelong nurse a national award. Narelle Place won outstanding graduate at the 2015 HESTA Australian Nursing Awards in Brisbane last Friday for her advocacy work to assist Barwon Health cancer patients. The award recognised her “strong advocacy work on behalf of patients and for improving procedures for patients requiring sedation while undergoing cancer treatments”. Some of her work included initiating changes to improve patient labelling on intravenous medication. Ms Place said she was pleased her advocacy for a patient requiring a naso-gastric tube while receiving radiotherapy treatment ensured he received the necessary pain relief. “Working in the oncology ward presents plenty of challenges, often patients experience a lot of anxiety and/or distress,” she said. “It’s important to speak up on behalf of them, especially when they might not be strong enough to do so themselves. “Often difficult conversations result in positive departmental changes regarding the processes, such as documenting sedation requirements, so unnecessary anxiety and discomfort can be avoided in future.” Award organisers said Ms Place also demonstrated “a pro-active approach to creating awareness among staff regarding the importance of patient labelling on intravenous medication lines and led a project highlighting the risk of patient falls in the hospital. HESTA chief Debby Blakey presented Ms Place with her award. “We’re pleased to recognise the drive and initiative shown by Narelle, particularly given she is only in her first year of nursing since completing her nursing degree.”

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) revealed that Focus on Training was one of 10 abandoned companies being wound up in Geelong. The companies owe a combined $429,000 to 15 employees.

Liquidators had been appointed to help the former employees access a Fair Entitlements Guarantee scheme (FEG), ASIC said. “The appointment of liquidators also facilitates a full and proper investigation into the reasons why the companies failed and allows recovery of any voidable or unreasonable directorrelated transactions.” The FEG is a legislative safety net scheme with Australian Gov-

Werribee cleans up IT’S FANTASTIC when you take your car in for a service at the dealer and it’s washed and vacuumed as part of the service. Unfortunately, I had to go to Werribee for this kind of service, as it seems it’s a long-lost courtesy here in Geelong. Geelong car dealers stopped washing cars during servicing when we were in drought. Prominently displayed signage in servicing foyers told us this. That was an easy and convenient opt-out for Geelong’s car-selling duopoly and the ritual car wash never returned to the yards where I’ve bought a number of new cars in the last couple of years. Melbourne’s dealers suffered water restrictions as well and a very few stopped washing cars too but most came up with solutions, such as tank water. But not in Geelong! So I now have a car that was freshly serviced, washed and vacuumed and I wasn’t even inconvenienced because of the free-of-charge courtesy car supplied for the day. TRAGIC: The only house lost in the Wensleydale fire goes up in flames.

etcetera, has been kind, polite and friendly. Yet, sadly, misguided and hateful stereotypes stop some white Australians returning that favour. And, sadly, whites have committed crimes as horrific as Muslim extremists, the Klu Klux Klan, Hitler’s genocide of Jews, the treatment of native American Indians, black slaves, the treatment of Aboriginals and the segregation of black and white Americans to name a few. Diversity and acceptance of people from different races is what Australia is built on. We can learn so much from other races, if only we can move past hateful racism and stereotypes. WILD about equality WILD (Women in Local Democracy) congratulates Peter Murrihy on his election as the Kildare Ward representative on City of Greater Geelong’s council. WILD surveyed the ward’s by-election candidates and was pleased that all 11 supported the Victorian Local Government Women’s Charter, endorsed by the City in 2010. All candidates pledged if elected "to work with other councillors, council management and staff and the community to promote equality of women and men and the charter’s three principles of gender equity, diversity and active citizenship". Accordingly, WILD expects that Cr Murrihy and all other sitting councillors will uphold the charter and will collectively take a stand of zero tolerance regarding any behaviour that undermines women’s equality in political, civic and/or community life. WILD offers, in the interests of a healthy local democracy, to assist council in ensuring the City becomes a municipal leader in addressing gender inequity and promoting gender equality for all. I PRAISE local CFA crews for their prompt response to the recent Wensleydale fire. CFA units were quick to respond to the fire under difficult circumstances and their efforts should be recognised. If it wasn’t for the prescribed burns in recent years undertaken in surrounding state forests that were under ember attack, the fire could have been much worse and engulfed property all the way to the coast. I am certain the prescribed burns limited the fire’s ferocity and the burn area. While it is tragic a house was lost, jointlyfunded Commonwealth-state natural disaster relief was activated to provide assistance to those affected by the fire. This fire and others across the state this month demonstrate the importance for landholders to undertake fire mitigation works now to reduce the risk as we move into the high bushfire danger period. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria Region

Race against hate WHEN I said we should be nice to people from other races I didn’t just mean Muslims, I meant every culturally diverse race that calls Australia home (Letters, 2 October). My point was that no-one, no matter their race, deserves to be treated and attacked as were the three women I mentioned. Every racially diverse person I have met and spoken to, be they Greek, Indian, Asian, African, German, Austrian, New Zealander

IT WAS heartening that Mr Barron (Letters, 9 October) grudgingly admitted that carbon dioxide was warming the planet. However, he quoted evidence from German scientists who had identified volatile organic compounds emitted from plants that offset the effect of global warming. He concluded that this showed how predictions of global warming were overstated. The scientists’ papers make no such claims. What Mr Barron failed to understand was that whatever influences plants have on mitigating warming, they have done so for eons, such that the planet’s equilibrium has been maintained. The reality is that global warming looms as civilisation’s greatest threat, so pseudo-scientists, vested interests and head-in-the-sand Luddites should stand aside while wiser heads grapple with the disaster most of us hope to avert. Don Bartlett Indented Heads

Headline caused Pain I UNDERSTOOD the letter from Geoff Pain (Independent, 16 October) and he was entitled to be upset. The assertion that the fluoride issue is settled was not made by me. It was made by the editor of the Independent, who put an eye-catching headline to my letter. This headline distorted the thrust of my letter, which recommended getting the data first before making a decision. I can only ask Mr Pain to ignore the headline. I think he would agree that fluoride, like copper, iron and other elements, is essential for life but an excess is toxic. Kevin Crough Lara

Shadow of mystery in movie fest A DOCUMENTARY film about a legal case with parallels to the Lindy Chamberlain controversy will be a feature attraction at this year’s Lorne Film festival. Award-winning Tasmanian documentary Shadow of Doubt follows one of the most intriguing and alarming legal cases in recent Australian history. Radiation physicist Bob Chappell, aged 65, was last seen alive on the Four Winds yacht on Australia Day, 26 January 2009. In October 2010 his partner of 18 years, Sue Neill-Fraser, was convicted of murder and jailed for 26 years, later reduced to 23 years. Lorne Film chief Emma Crichton said the documentary presented evidence that the case was entirely circumstantial, given Bob Chappell’s body was never found. “Sue has always protested her innocence, vehemently denying any involvement in Bob’s disappearance,“ Crichton said. “Fresh and compelling evidence has emerged and this will be discussed following the screening via a 45-minute panel session with facilitated audience discussion.” The panel discussion includes filmmaker Eve Ash and Dr Robert Moles,

an Australian academic regarded as a world-class expert on legal theory and miscarriages of justice. “The Neill-Fraser case is one of the worst ever,” Dr Moles said. “No body, no plausible scenario or motive and no credible evidence that a murder has even been committed.” Civil Liberties Australia head Bill Rowlings said the film depicted a miscarriage of justice so blatant it was “impossible to believe it could happen in this day and age”. Stuart Tipple, lawyer for Lindy Chamberlain, said the story had many parallels to Chamberlain’s case. Well-known QC Robert Richter said if half of the Chappell allegations were well-founded it required “a full judicial inquiry into the investigation and prosecution of the case”. Ash said she began filming Shadow of Doubt in Hobart after Sue NeillFraser was arrested and later convicted of her partner’s murder. Sue Neill-Fraser is in her seventh year at Tasmania’s Risdon Prison. A new law to be debated in the Tasmanian parliament this month could give her the right to a further appeal. Shadow of Doubt will screen at 2.30pm on 15 November at Lorne’s Cumberland Auditorium.

WITHIN the confines of a chandelier-lit studio in the tranquil surrounds of a garden, Elaine Mitchell has explored notions of purity and innocence in a rare exhibition of her drawings. While Mitchell has had a number of exhibitions over the years in many venues, Angels and Unicorns is a rare open studio display of her creativity. She will open the exhibition in her Scarecrow Patch Studio, which usually serves as a performance space for Mitchell’s Theatre of the Winged Unicorn. “I think people are always seeking truth and purity, and unicorns stand for those qualities,” Mitchell said. “Purity is something you don’t find very often.” Since losing husband Dennis last year, Mitchell has developed an interest in angels and other winged creatures such as unicorns and butterflies. She draws inspiration from varied incidental fleeting observations that explode into pencilled drawings, collages with glass organza, drawings on calico or acrylic paintings. Mitchell stressed that imaginary creatures such as unicorns were not just for the kids but for everyone, for all time. For Mitchell, creativity isn’t a pastime, it’s a lifestyle. “I live and breathe it. It’s an integral part of who I am. “I look forward to people just walking in, maybe having a drink, and wandering through to have a look at the work I’ve produced.” The exhibition will be open 10am to 4pm on 7 to 8 and 14 to 15 November at the studio in Thomas St, Ceres.

MELBOURNE City Ballet will bring the timeless opera Carmen to the Bellarine Peninsula tonight (Friday) as part of a regional tour. Australia’s fastest growing ballet company, MCB, will stage its production at Drysdale’s The Potato Shed. Carmen tells the story of a city policeman, Don Jose, whose mother calls him to return home to marry childhood sweetheart Micaela. Instead a chance encounter with an enchanting gypsy girl, Carmen, leads the pair into a tumultuous relationship that changes their lives forever. Michael Pappalardo’s Carmen is portrayed by Nikki Blain, who recently joined the company from the National Ballet of Canada. Known for her gorgeous legs and feet, Blain is one of Australia’s foremost emerging ballet artists, having trained with the Australian Ballet School, Melbourne. “I respect that Carmen is an independent and strong woman in her time,” Blain said. “She has a lot of sass and makes a very interesting change for a ballet artist.” Melbourne City Ballet has attracted experienced artists from across the world. Early Birds For Australia Book by 6 November 2015 and SAVE $$$$$

IN A changing world where holiday itineraries can be booked solely online, Dalma Travel and Cruises continues to pride itself on its face-to-face customer service with a personal touch. Having just returned from the ‘picture perfect’ Amalfi Coast and Adriatic Coast of Croatia, Dalma Travel owner and manager Rashida Przastek is inspired to help jetsetters plan a smooth and eye-opening trip overseas. “It’s my passion for travel that keeps me going,” she says. “The only way to really explain places to clients - where to go, what to do, what to eat, what

to see - is to go there and experience the place first-hand.“ After befriending Italian locals in Sorrento and the Bay of Naples, Rashida took an eightday tour in Croatia across lakes, national parks, palaces and fortresses. She then went on her annual visit to England where she indulged herself with an affordable dinner cruise on the River Thames, a unique way to see London by night. Originally from Pakistan, Rashida has worked in London, and for Pakistan Airlines and Air India. With over 50 years of expe-

rience in the travel industry, she guides customers to develop personalised itineraries according to their interests; be it historical sites, beaches, shopping or traditional cuisine. Rashida recommends planning holidays with Australian based companies, which gives clients more flexibility in terms of making changes to their itineraries compared with booking online. For more information on Dalma Travel, visit dalmatravel.com. au or call 5229 7631. Meet Rashida and her team at 92 Pakington Street, Geelong West.

African safari THE great annual migration of millions of zebra, wildebeest and antelope in east Africa tops almost every list of safari experiences. Travellers planning to see it need information like when to arrive and where to stay, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania The animals’ journey of around 2900km includes spectacular and dangerous river crossings from July to September when the herds battle strong currents and hungry crocodiles lying in wait. Out on the plains the herds face Africa’s impressive predators, including lions, leopards, hyenas and wild dogs on the prowl.

As a natural event, the precise timing and route of the migration changes yearly. Sirocco Travel & Cruise can help clients experience the migration with its Kenya-Tanzania combination safari covering the most famous premium game parks and reserves in east Africa. The safari program offers rare opportunities to interact with ethnic communities and see the “big five” of Africa: lions, cape buffalo, savanna elephants, leopards and rhinos. The safari ends with chances to observe the “special five”, only found north of the equator: Grevy’s zebra, beisa oryx ante-

lope, swala twiga gazelle, reticulated giraffe and Somali ostrich. Also included in the trip are opportunities to experience the majestic Victoria Falls and South Africa’s Cape Town. Sirocco’s Gerlinde Greig will personally escort the small group on the tour. Anyone interested in the oncein-a-lifetime safari can contact Gerlinde at Sirocco Travel & Cruise, Shop 33, Newcomb Central, Newcomb, phone 5248 1605 or email gerlinde@siroccotravel. com.au. Please express your interest in our upcoming information day.

WHEN it comes to tyres, there’s not much that Scotty Wolfenden doesn’t know. And he’s keen to pass along his knowledge to customers of his independent, locally owned and operated, Geelong Tyre and Wheels store at Breakwater. “I’ve been wholesaling tyres and wheels for 15 years, so I’ve been able to develop an in-depth knowledge of products available,” Scotty says. “We take the time to talk to our customers, find out what driving they do, have a good look at their tyres on the car and see how they are worn. “That way we can be sure we recommend the right tyres for the customer, because they are always talking to the people who own and manage the store.” Geelong Tyre and Wheels carries all major brands, including Pirelli, Bridgestone, Kumho, Maxxis and Kenda. Not only that, but Scotty is a car enthusiast himself, owning a classic 1966 Ford XP wagon, so he understands the pride and joy that some cars carry for their owners. Geelong Tyre and Wheels can supply everything needed to turn a four-wheel drive from mild to wild with a full range of lift kits, rims and mud tyres. The business also offers a full mechanical workshop with brakes, suspension and servicing for all makes and models, without voiding a new car warranty. IndySport On the

Cohesion, game plan ‘keys to Cats premiership bid’

bite

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

Chris Pitman

Snapper spring up in numbers WITH calm conditions on Sunday morning, Kim Gorell and Pete Beard decided to head out from St Helens. Drifting soft plastics over the channel edges, Pete’s rod nearly fell overboard when he hooked a snapper of 5.5kg, which was boated after a short battle. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van der Lught and Paul Mayer also fished the bay on Sunday, casting soft plastics over the spoil grounds for an impressive bag of larger-model flathead. Later they tried for bream inside the grammar school lagoon, taking a pair to 38cm. Clifton Springs hosted the majority of snapper anglers last week, and with good reason. Joe Novella ventured out to The Turn where he boated a 7.2kg snapper. Ben Mclean fished off the quarries at first light on Saturday. His pilchard bait took a snapper of 4.5kg just after sun-up and on the way home he drifted over the shallow grass beds to catch a bag of squid on Gan Craft jigs. Squid were also present in great numbers at Queenscliff where the grass beds to the left of the harbour hosted plentiful numbers. Anglers caught squid to 2.5kg on the last of the incoming tide, with the Queenscliff Bight also productive. Digby Ford caught silver trevally in the Barwon River estuary, along with a 36cm tailor. The entrance of the river produced King George whiting to 45cm on the run-in tide. While the fish were a great size, their numbers were limited to five or six per angler. Offshore, southern bluefin tuna to 120kg were taken by keen anglers willing to cover large distances of water. Large skirted lures continued to work best. I fished down the coast with lures in the Hopkins River, encountering bream and estuary perch to 35cm. A 60mm Daiwa Double Clutch was my most effective lure. On the freshwater scene, the Barwon River from Buckley Falls to Queen’s Park produced redfin on soft plastics and hard-body lures. Most reddies averaged 800g and were holding in tightly packed schools, allowing anglers to bag numbers of fish. St Augustine’s Lake fished well for rainbow trout left over from the recent school holiday stocking program. The trout responded well to small hard-body lures and pink Powerbait. Anglers continued catching Chinook salmon to 2kg with bait around the margins of Lake Bullen Merri. Anglers fishing the lake should keep an eye on blue green algae levels with the warmer weather tending to create larger blooms. Up at Ballarat, Lake Wendouree produced brown trout to 2kg for anglers fishing mudeyes suspended under floats from the banks. Lures accounted for a few trout but fishing the mudeyes were the standout tactic. Anglers seeking a snapper fix over the next week should again set their sights on Clifton Springs, otherwise Queenscliff would be well worth a look for monster squid that have been latching on to any jig crossing their path. Freshwater anglers will find Lake Bullen Merri holding Chinook salmon, which will take bait from the boat or the bank.

TEAM cohesion and executing the game plan will be keys to the Cats’ premiership hopes next season, coach Chris Scott has declared. He warned that Geelong’s recruiting coups of the AFL trade period - snaring Patrick Dangerfield from Adelaide, Scott Selwood from West Coast, Lachie Henderson from Carlton and Zac Smith from Gold Coast - would not automatically put the Cats in contention. “We’ve got a lot of work to do on the way we play,” Scott said. “With new players coming in there are some challenges around cohesion and game style and we need to get working really quickly. “We’ve got some young players coming through that we’re confident in but they’re by no means bona fide A-grade AFL players yet, so we’re optimistic that we’ve given ourselves a platform we can work from. “But we’re going to have to work really hard, really diligently, to turn that platform into something bigger.” Scott said the ambitious recruitment plan was the culmination of “years of planning”, paying tribute to recruitment manager Stephen Wells. “We’re really happy. The plan was a long time in the making. “Most clubs these days are thinking a couple of years ahead, at least, and in the early stages it seemed like a pretty ambitious plan to get all four guys over the line but now it’s done, we’re optimistic we’ve given ourselves a chance to be really competitive. “We also acknowledge that it’s only a chance. It doesn’t really solve anything in the short-term.” The potential for finals is firmly on the agenda of Geelong recruit Lachie Henderson, who was keen to disprove his doubters when he arrived at Simonds Stadium this week. “I look back on it now and I’ve learned a lot of lessons this year,” Henderson said while pulling on a Geelong jumper for the first time. “It was a tough year for myself and the club and I probably didn’t really play how I should have this year, so I’ve learnt some lessons and there definitely is a point to prove but I’m really looking forward to the future and what it holds. “I think the playing group down here’s got some really good things to give in the near future.” Henderson grew up in Birregurra, not too far from the Moggs Creek home of Dangerfield, who he played with in the Geelong Falcons. “We had a good year together down at the Falcons and we’ve stayed in touch ever since,” Henderson said. “We’re pretty good mates and our families are pretty close, too, so it’s good to play with him.”

Bats collapse again as country round arrives GEELONG Cricket Club continues to show vast improvement so far this season, however some fine individual efforts aren’t being converted to points on the ladder, with another frustrating narrow loss last weekend. Taking on Ringwood, the Cats bowled first, Jake Reed claiming a wicket with the first ball of the innings to set the tone. While the bowlers all stuck to their guns, a series of solid partnerships saw the hosts finish their 50 overs on 8/236 with Justin McPhee the pick of the bowlers snaring 3/49. In reply, the Cats started shakily, falling to 3/42 before a strong 102 run stand between Andrew McDonald (107) and Luke Ibbs (31) righted the ship, and at 4/198 they were probably in front. From there, though, a familiar batting collapse saw Geelong crumble to be all out seven runs short of its target. While the signs are there that the side is starting to gel, it needs a win to keep its season on track. It will get a good chance to do that in the final one-day game of this block when it will host Essendon at Maryborough on Saturday in the annual country round. In Geelong Cricket Association, round three sees the return of two day matches to the fixture and the clash between two of the undefeated teams in North

Geelong and Murgheboluc will be a good chance to see where they are at this season. North Geelong destroyed St Joseph’s in round one before easily accounting for Geelong West last week, Sam Hall starring with an undefeated 104 to show the loss of Thorne brothers hasn’t affected the Magpies’ finals hopes in the slightest. Murgheboluc has also lost some firepower with Glen Talarico not playing after moving away, however the Frogs have marched on winning a thriller against Leopold by one run last week. With both sides having many players in such good form, this will be a great game but North Geelong’s experience would still see it start favourites. South Barwon v EAST BELMONT, LEOPOLD v Newtown and Chilwell, GEELONG CITY v Grovedale, Lara v ST JOSEPHS, BELL POST HILL v Geelong West. In division two, Highton has started the season brightly, with two wins from as many starts, and will

give itself a good chance of knocking off Manifold Heights this round to cement its spot in the top two. The Heat racked up 313 last week against Waurn Ponds before bowling out the Eagles for just 120 in a huge percentage boosting win. The Sharks will put up a good fight, though, with class players such as Charlie Owen in the side, but at the end of the day the Heat should be too strong. Modewarre v MARSHALL, Alexander Thomson v TORQUAY, Bell Park v ST ALBANS BREAKWATER, St Peters v NEWCOMB AND DISTRICT, THOMSON v Waurn Ponds. And in division three, Bannockburn is the only team to remain undefeated thus far, although Guild St Mary’s will provide a good examination in their clash on Saturday. Having knocked off Corio Bay and Inverleigh so far, the home side will be looking to take a big scalp. Guild St Mary’s, however, has been very competitive after dropping down from division two, meaning for either side to take the points here they will need to be at their best. Guild St Mary’s could just cause an upset here. WINCHELEA v Inverleigh, Corio v CORIO BAY, Shelford v LETHBRIDGE, TEESDALE v Meredith, Little River bye.
