Flame death desperation By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

ALONE without family, friends or a home, 30-year-old Afghan asylum seeker Khodayar Amini burnt himself alive in a Dandenong park. Some thought he may have been living in a car during his last weeks of life. Others think he may not have had a car to live in, but in his last despairing days was hiding in scrub – much like where his blazing remains were found by firefighters in Robert Booth Reserve. The blackened mulch has become a makeshift shrine, its charred edges lined by artfully-placed flowers. A memorial service was due to be held at the site on Saturday. Many in the region’s vast Hazara community did not know of Mr Amini until after he self-immolated on a video call to Western Australian refugee activists on Sunday 18 October. When Mr Amini arrived in Dandenong two months ago, there were no family or friends for him. Most of his family had been killed by the Taliban and two of his friends had committed suicide in a West Australian detention centre where he had also been locked up for three years. It appears Mr Amini had been trying to avoid authorities. NSW police had charged him over an alleged threatening phone call – how serious the call was and to whom is not clear. Immigration department officials also sought a meeting with him. Mr Amini was on a bridging visa and had told people he was terrified that he would be detained again and forcibly deContinued page 3

Husband’s threat to burn his family alive By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DANDENONG man throttled his wife and regularly threatened to kill her and their four children by setting them alight with petrol or by strangling them with an electrical cord, a court has heard. The Afghan-born 42-year-old former refugee unsuccessfully applied for bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 October, signalling his intention to fight the serious family violence charges. Police informant Senior Constable Leigh Wilkinson of Dandenong police told the court that the accused became enraged after his wife of 20 years refused his sexual advances about 11pm on 10 September. He allegedly grabbed the victim’s throat with both hands and told her he would kill her. “The victim indicates she was having to struggle to break the ac-
cused’s grip around her neck,” Sen Const Wilkinson said. “She seriously feared for her life.” After releasing his grip, the man returned with an electrical cord. He said he would “murder” her, the children and then himself, Sen Const Wilkinson said. According to a medical report, the woman suffered a possible dislocated shoulder as well as bruising and swelling to the inside of her neck. The victim told police that the accused had threatened to kill her and had sexually and physically assaulted her many times prior to the incident. The alleged threats variously involved using an electrical cord or to douse the family members with petrol and incinerate them. None had been reported to police before. The husband had also threatened
to kill the victim’s family in Pakistan, the informant told the court. Sen Const Wilkinson said police had “grave concerns” that if released on bail, the husband would retaliate against the victim for reporting the matter. However the victim, who had moved out of the family home with three of their children, supported the accused’s bail application. “She’s paying for both residences which is quite a financial drain for her,” Sen Const Wilkinson said. The husband allegedly told police he tried to restrain the wife without using much force and denied making threats to kill her and the children. His defence lawyer argued that a CREDIT bail order would assist the man with anger management and mental health treatment. The accused had been in custody for the past 37 days, he said.
“As a man with no prior criminal history, it cannot be said he won’t take his (bail and intervention order) obligations to the court seriously.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he rejected the “very difficult” bail application because of the seriousness of the alleged violence and threats. “You’d remain an unacceptable risk of committing an offence endangering your wife and your children, and interfering with them or the course of justice.” The accused was placed on a two-year full intervention order banning him from seeing and contacting the wife and children. Child access could be made with the agreement of the Department of Health and Human Services. The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 6 November.

He told Refugees Rights Action Network recently: “My crime was that I was a refugee. “They tortured me for 37 months and during all these times, they treated me in the most cruel and inhumane way. “Every human being has the right to live. “Living shouldn’t (be) a crime anymore.” John Gulzari, like many Hazara former refugees, has been seeking to find out who Mr Amini was and why he fell to such awful depths. Up to a few weeks ago, Mr Amini apparently showed no sign of mental health problems. “His most major fear was that he would be deported to Afghanistan where he lost his family members,” Mr Gulzari said. “Atrocities are still happening. It’s unsafe for Hazara there because there is little law and order. He didn’t want to die there.” Mr Gulzari said Australia’s punitive asylum-seeker policy brought Mr Amini to such despair. “It’s in the hands of the government. No death is too minor.” Mr Gulzari said it was worrying what this will do for the state of mind of other shocked Hazaras living in Australia. Many are depressed and concerned for their families back home. Some have spent almost three years on bridging visas, scrimping on less

JACK JOHNSON IS THE AUTHOR OF WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES, A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN DANDENONG, HIS YEARS TENDING TO THE CITY’S PIPES AND DRAINS AS A PLUMBER AND BRINGING UP A FAMILY WITH WIFE FRANCES IN THEIR BELOVED HOME IN MACPHERSON STREET.
Smoko with the devil, that’s no furphy THE council storage yard was on a small island of land in McCrae Street. It was bordered at the rear by Boyd and McClennan lanes and was about where today’s CWA meeting rooms and public toilets are, in the Plaza section of McCrae Street. The open brick drain and bridge ran across McCrae Street, almost in front of the storage yard. Dandenong Shire Council stored some of their materials and equipment there. We often explored this yard and climbed over the various pieces of equipment left lying around. There were horse-drawn graders and rollers, horse-drawn scoops, and large tip drays with wooden-spoked, iron-rimmed wheels. And of course there were ironwheeled furphies with a road sprinkler bar across the back. After nicking a couple of dad’s or Uncle Gordon’s hand-rolled cigarettes, Nipper and Guss had wandered down

McCrae Street looking for somewhere to smoke them. Prior to this they had tried smoking rolled up brown paper, but this was a disaster, as Guss burnt his eyebrows and both of them burnt their throats and nearly choked. This time, they had the real McCoy - good quality Log Cabin, fine cut tobacco, rolled in gum-rice papers. ‘None of that bloody repeater rubbish!’ as Uncle Gordon always told us when he sent us down to buy tobacco and cigarette papers from either Mr Simon’s barber shop opposite the town hall or old Mr Evans’ shop on the Pult-
ney Street corner. They even had a used Log Cabin tin to carry them in. They planned to go under the bridge over the open brick drain and smoke their ill-gotten gains, but as they reached the bridge, two senior citizens were leaning against the wooden railings having a yarn. They walked off into the council yard looking for a spot where they would not be seen from the street and climbed onto the shaft end of the furphy tank, where the lid opening and filler hole was. Usually the lid opening on the furphy carts was at the back end, but this one was at the front. These openings normally had a heavy domed cast-iron lid with raised lettering as did the cast-iron ends of the tank, but the council workers, or some needy person, had pinched this one. Nipper and Gus must have still been fairly small when they lowered them-
selves into the tank, because the opening was not much bigger than a milk bucket. Once inside they squatted down and lit their cigarettes. It was not long before a stream of blue-grey smoke was issuing from the tank. With the amount of smoke they were producing, they must have been puffing like a steam engine pulling a passenger train up Pretty Sally hill. Just at this moment a bedraggled looking swaggie - with a beard and hair so thick and matted that all you could see of his face was his flaring nostrils and wild eyes - was walking along McCrae Street heading for the stock market, where they usually camped in the roofed-over wooden sheep and calf pens. Seeing the smoke coming from the furphy tank, his curiosity got the better of him. He dropped his swag on the grass,
stepped over a fallen rail of the old post-and-rail fence and walked through the yard to the furphy cart. He peered in at the two startled kids, who yelped with fright. The swaggie, being a bit startled himself, yelled the Lord’s name, hyphenated by a bloody in the middle and followed by, ‘what the bloody hell’s going on here?’ Then, just as suddenly as he had come, he picked up his swag and headed off. Nipper and Guss were so shocked they thought the devil himself had just poked his fearsome head into the furphy. Terrified that he was still waiting for them, they cowered in the tank for about 20 minutes. Even when they re-joined me where I was sitting on the rail at the side of Old Patto’s paddock, they still did not believe me when I told them that the evil one was just a swaggie.
1000 Marching Girls in Dandenong The Dandenong Girls Matching Association, comprising the famous Heinz teams, will be hosts at a championship competition to be held at Dandenong Show Grounds on December 19. Depending on the number of teams that will enter for the competition, Dandenong’s population of marching girls could well rise above 1000. Bearing in mind that the competitors are girls ranging from eight to the late teens, their welfare has to be strictly supervised.

Truckies tow the line By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DANDENONG tow-truck company has been convicted and undertaken to reimburse insurance companies over dozens of false salvage fee charges. Time Nominees and five of its drivers initially faced 496 charges over the matter at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 October. On a plea of guilty by Time, all but one of those charges were withdrawn by prosecuting agency VicRoads. The court heard that Time wrongly charged a salvage fee on top of a towing fee at 55 accident scenes between 8 July and 9 September 2014. On each occasion, the company in-
voiced salvage fees of up to $210 to the relevant car insurers, the court heard. Time gave an undertaking to attempt to reimburse more than $6000 of wrongly charged salvage fees. “I’m instructed that is difficult ... but my client will make attempts,” Time’s lawyer told the court. He argued there had “long been confusion in the industry” about what constitutes a salvage and how much should be charged. According to the law, a salvage only occurs when a towed vehicle is not on a road or “road related area”, or it is embedded in a building or object that isn’t another vehicle, or it is overturned. To illustrate the uncertainty, the lawyer
said one of the non-salvaged vehicles had run off the road, knocked down a pole and became stuck behind the pole and a bush. “The vehicle couldn’t be driven out of there even if it was still working. Yet, under the definition, that isn’t salvageable. “The reasonable person walking along would say that sounds like a salvage.” The defence lawyer noted the insurers had approved the invoice payments after viewing photos of the accidents. Since the offences, the company had discussed the strict definition with VicRoads’s chief investigator, and improved its processes, the lawyer said. It had lost four demerit points from its accreditation. A subsequent offence would result in
Time losing its towing licence for a month. “Effectively it is a three-year probation,” the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the company’s early plea of guilty, no prior convictions, its co-operation with VicRoads and commitment to get more educated on the issue. Mr Vandersteen accepted there was a gap between the ordinary usage and the statutory definition of ‘salvage’, but there was an obligation for the company to know the difference. He said there was a need for general deterrence due to the charges being passed onto consumers’ insurance premiums. Time was fined $3000 and ordered to pay $8000 of agreed costs to VicRoads.
The changing face of Springvale SPRINGVALE’S streetscape is set for a shake-up. City of Greater Dandenong plans to build on the momentum the level crossing removal project created. On Monday 19 October it launched two projects to improve the look and amenity of central Springvale, and announced it would recruit a project manager to oversee the works over the next two years. The first project will include a major upgrade of the Springvale Road streetscape between Virginia Street and St James Avenue. Designs are yet to be final-
ised but are expected to include new paving, street furniture and lighting. The second project will feature the redevelopment of council-owned land in the Warwick Avenue precinct. The vision for the precinct is to provide mixed-use development opportunities, including apartments to complement the activity centre and the Springvale Civic Precinct project. A number of private developments are already underway in central Springvale. Consultation with traders and the broader community will start next year.

Site dust complaint By CASEY NEILL A DUST cloud has left a Dandenong woman gasping for air and questioning training for asbestos removalists. Sharon Harris lodged complaints with Greater Dandenong Council and WorkSafe about a demolition team at a property neighbouring her Carson Street home on Monday 19 October. “He pulled a big chunk down when I was just getting out of my car,” she said. “I had grit in my eyes and I had to go inside and wash my eyes. “My eyes still sting and I have been wheezing since then, too. “I could see these little particles floating through the air. I just thought it was dust at the time.” Ms Harris then noticed an asbestos removal sign and looked up the code of practice for handling the hazardous material. “There’s supposed to be someone there hosing it down,” she said. She said she should have been advised
that the removal was taking place. “I didn’t get any letters and I’m the closest to them,” she said. “I’ve got my dog and I’ve got washing on the line but I didn’t get told any of it.” Ms Harris questioned whether training in asbestos removal should be stepped up. Greater Dandenong city planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said the council investigated the complaint. “The investigation, by two of the council’s environmental health officers, revealed that the alleged asbestos removal was being undertaken by a WorkSafe licensed asbestos removalist,” he said. “Discussions with the complainant indicated that WorkSafe had been contacted, who advised her that they were investigating the matter and would respond back to her.” A WorkSafe spokesman confirmed a complaint had been received. “WorkSafe is making inquiries to ensure appropriate measures are in place to minimise risks to workers and the public while the asbestos is being removed,” he said.
Police are looking for this stolen dirt bike.
Arrests following burglary A MAN and woman were arrested earlier this month in relation to two residential burglaries in Keysborough. A 33-year-old man was arrested and remanded on Friday 16 October after a substantial amount of jewellery was taken during the robbery. He was charged with burglary and theft. A woman was also arrested on the same day but was released pending further inquiries. It followed another residential burglary in Dandenong, on Wednesday 14 October, when four KTM dirt bikes were stolen from an Egan Road property. A motorbike trailer was also stolen. A Northern suburbs man, in his twenties, has been arrested in relation to the robbery but no items have yet been recovered. Police have released a photo of one of the stolen bikes.

Skate park security set to be ramped up By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SKATE park touted as “changing the face of Noble Park” is set for security and amenity upgrades. Skaters across Melbourne have en masse carved their boards through Ross Reserve skate park’s street course, bowl and ramp under bright white lights since it opened several months ago. On 19 October, the reserve received a further $245,000 State funding injection for bright LED lighting outside the nearby com-
munity centre and footpaths, earthworks to improve sightlines, and a kiosk near the skate park. Greater Dandenong Council, as part of its $451,000 contribution, will build toilets and shelters for the park’s precinct, and lights for the skate facility’s car park. The works are expected to be complete by April 2017. Keysborough MP Martin Pakula said at the funding announcement that the upgrades would help instill community
pride and perceived safety at the reserve, and reduce opportunities for crime and anti-social behaviour. “For the community to get the maximum benefit from the development, they need it to be as user-friendly as possible, as safe as possible and as inviting as possible.” Police and councillors have already observed that the recently opened skate park has been incident-free and looked after by its young patrons. The brightly lit, CCTV moni-
tored arena attracts crowds of skaters at night. Their strong numbers, in itself, improves “passive surveillance”. Cheltenham skater Jesse Donald told the Journal the park’s popularity came down to its variety of rides. He said improved security would attract even greater hordes of young users. “I had been hearing good things from everyone. It’s got people using it from other parts of the city.” Councillors Peter Brown and
Roz Blades said the facility had “changed the face of the suburb” and helped turn Noble Park into a “destination” - together with its restaurants and award-winning aquatic centre. Cr Blades noted how young people had cared for the skate park, which seems free of litter and graffiti. Mayor Sean O’Reilly said the council’s Ross Reserve masterplan and impending Heatherton Road rail-and-road grade separation would provide a further boost.

Refugee volunteers have since changed it into a freshly painted, welcoming one-stop shop that provides free lunches, clothes and other essentials, job CV help and training, English language classes, a GP, counselling, a men’s group, a library and games room with a pool table and a carrom board. Somehow it runs on donations and volunteers five days a week without a cent of government or Jesuran church funding. The centre’s Pastor Hilda Samuel calls it a “miracle house”. She said it is a place where those who have escaped from misery in war zones and detention centres are loved. “We do inner healing that deals with the trauma - the spirit, mind and body. We identify all the emotional pain. “We are here to make the journey with them and get them right.” In the kitchen, some mothers gather and talk. It’s quickly apparent why they need help. One is practically a single mother due to her husband being imprisoned for domestic violence. She hasn’t seen her greater family for years and wishes to
Hilda Samuel who runs a "miracle house" for Tamil asylum Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS seekers. 145604 bring them to Australia to live, which is impossible while she’s in the tortuous limbo of a bridging visa. Speaking on Khodayar Amini’s tragic suicide in a Dandenong park recently, Ms Samuel said the Federal Government must treat new arrivals more humanely. “These people have the same ambitions, the same desires and the same plans for their families as you and me. “They come with these dreams that are shattered and broken. The laws drive them to this kind of behaviour.” Ms Samuel said she can empathise with new arrivals’ plight to some extent - their search for jobs, the language barriers and just the fact that many people don’t understand what they’re going through. Her own business went bust, she owed the bank $500,000
and then she found God - who she said helped her overcome her debt. Ms Samuel estimates about $25,000 of goods have been donated as a starting point. She requires much more to extend her ambitious mission finding jobs for asylum seekers, plus the help of pro-bono lawyers, donors and volunteers. There’s a need for a giant rice cooker, Asian groceries and a television. “Nothing is impossible and I know God is helping me,” Ms Samuel said. “You have a vision and you have to believe in your vision. You can’t believe in anyone else saying you’re wasting your time.” Jesuran Wellness Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday at 79a Herbert Street, Dandenong. To help, phone 0407 125 649.

A MEMBER of The Salvation Army gave an alcoholic man a stern dressing down in the courthouse last week. The accused had pleaded guilty to threatening to kill his wife of 25 years soon after being arrested for breaching an intervention order. With permission from the judge, the Salvo told the court that the accused had long promised Alcoholics Anonymous that he would give up the drink. “He’s a good bloke when he’s not drinking. He’s got a lovely wife and beautiful kids. “It’s time he lived up to his promises. THERE was a good use of the carrot and not just the stick by a Dandenong judge last week. A drug user and accused thief, who is very much on the mend, was given judicial permission to skip his bailed residence for a weekend show coming up in Bendigo.

Tragic death of immigrant who feared detention... Brad Woodford: While I have some sympathy for the plight of people facing persecution, I continue to remain baffled by refugee groups who say we should abolish bridging visas, and simply “let them all in. This is a completely unrealistic option and we shouldn’t be forced into doing such things simply because a minority of people want to selfharm. If we are to abolish bridging visas, this will realistically only result in people being kept inside detention centres for longer periods of time.

KEEP an eye out for scammers in Keysborough. John Dickens’ neighbour paid more than $4000 up-front to tradesman offering her a front fence. They dug a ditch around the property more than a month ago, abandoned the job and have since been uncontactable. 145788 Picture: ROB CAREW “The reason I’m doing this is you’re looking really well, the magistrate said. “If you’re doing the right thing, we have to do the right thing back.
Asbestos fears have neighbour looking for answers... Eric Simmons: It’s funny reading that as only two weeks ago on a Sunday morning we were woken up to a noise of a hammer at 7.30am, went out to take a look to find next door had a tape fence up saying ‘warning asbestos’, spoke to the guys about it and they said ‘yes, we are meant to let you know but thought we might have woken you up’. These guys did hose it down, but they could have at least left a letter in the mail box a few days before or knocked on our door to let us know, but being done on a Sunday it still makes me wonder if all was done above aboard.

Big weekend on the roads By CASEY NEILL GREATER Dandenong police will be tackling road trauma during the Melbourne Cup weekend. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts said Operation Furlong would bring additional officers into the municipality between Friday 30 October and midnight on Tuesday 3 November. “We’ll be targeting the main causes of road trauma, primarily being speed,” he said. “We know for certain that is the main cause of trauma on our roads. “We’re also looking at impaired drivers, which incorpo-
rates drug and alcohol. “Since April last year, we’ve had 40 instances from this office alone where people have progressed from a preliminary test to an oral fluid test.” Sen Sgt Roberts said these drivers generally had “some sort of substance in their system”. “It’s a matter of getting it out there that the opportunity for detection is a lot higher than it ever was before,” he said. He said police also had a way to test whether prescription medications were impairing a driver. “If they are impaired we can require them in certain circumstances to have blood taken, testing for a far greater array of
prescription and illicit drugs,” he said. Sen Sgt Roberts said penalties for driving under the influence of drugs included impoundments. He said officers would also target drivers using mobile phones and failing to wear seatbelts. “These are all drivers of trauma within the road toll,” he said. “It’s really a matter of people being courteous on the road and just knowing that they’re sharing the road with their relatives and friends. “Would they behave and put themselves in a similar situation if they knew it was their friends and relatives on the road?”
Attack bandits on the run FOUR robbers bashed a man with a metal pole and stole his car in Noble Park. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are appealing for public help following the incident on Monday 5 October. The victim parked his Range Rover outside a milk bar on Yarraman Road to go into the store about 9pm. He realised the milk bar was closed and returned to his car when four men approached him. One hit the victim with a metal

Join up for learning By CASEY NEILL TEACHERS and students are learning from each other and championing inclusiveness. Monash University in Berwick and Dandenong-based community organisation Wallara have joined forces for the 10-week Keep on Learning (KoL) program. Teachers in training gain hands-on experience through tutoring adults with intellectual disabilities that Wallara supports gain education. Dr Sarah Hopkins from Monash’s education faculty is spearheading the program with Drs Penny Round and Pearl Subban. More than 60 first year Bachelor of Education students have signed up for the voluntary program. Two work with each Wallara client to improve their reading skills and their numeracy skills with handling money. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data shows a growing number of students with special needs and a shortage of teachers with special education training. Dr Hopkins said most Australian students with disabilities attended regular or special classes in mainstream schools. “It is critical that pre-service teachers destined for mainstream schools are well prepared to support the participation and learning of students across the full range of abilities,” she said. “Having authentic experiences of working with students with intellectual disabilities is an important part of this process.” Dr Hopkins said there was potential for the program to grow and encompass a range of universities in areas such as medicine, nursing and health sciences. Wallara CEO Phil Hayes-Brown said
IN BRIEF Quality award DANDENONG Hospital Emergency Department has been named Australasia’s best. The College of Emergency Nursing Australasia (CENA) Best Australasian Emergency Department of the Year recognised the department’s transformation after introducing a new care model in late 2013. Chief executive Shelly Park said the award recognised the Dandenong team’s exemplary efforts to champion the new model, in response to the rapid increase of emergency department presentations.
Abuse inquiry Teachers gain experience working with students with disabilities. the initiative would expand the capacity of the mainstream education sector. “It’s long been a goal of ours to work with other education leaders to see preservice teachers have more exposure to disability and to build their confidence and capacity regardless of where they end up in their teaching career,” he said. “Hopefully, programs like this with Monash will inspire more clever ideas which can raise capacity and build greater social inclusion.” The KoL program has been established with help from an Ian Potter Foundation grant.
Students and teachers learn together.

Words of wedded bliss TALKING has been the key to Mary and Gerald Borg notching up 55 years of wedded bliss. “Fight but make up before you go to bed,” Mary said. “Don’t keep secrets. If there is something that is bothering you, talk it over.” Mary, 78, and Gerald, 82, celebrated the anniversary on Tuesday 20 October at the Springvale Senior Citizens Multicultural Club, where Mary has served as president for the past 12 years. “He’s a very good husband,” Mary said. “I never thought we were going to see all those years. “We’ve had our ups and downs, but more ups.” A 22-year-old Gerald was changing electricity wires near Mary’s home in St Julians when he spotted the 17-year-old. “He saw me there and he
started to convince me to go out with him,” she said. They married at the local Catholic Church on 16 October, 1960, in front of 300 guests and soon had two children, Michael and Paul. The Borgs arrived in Australia for a holiday on 26 January in 1966. “Australia Day to me meant nothing at that time, but later it meant heaps,” Mary said. “Exactly one year later a son was born in Australia on Australia Day.” John died two years ago from a heart attack, aged 45. Their son Frank was also born in Australia, and Mary and Gerald have four grandchildren. The couple have lived in Springvale since their arrival and Mary is a Greater Dandenong Living Treasure. “We love it here,” she said. Mayor Sean O’Reilly and
Michael Burke.
Gerald and Mary Borg celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary at the Springvale Senior Picture: ROB CAREW Citizens Multicultural Club. 145506 councillor Roz Blades attended the anniversary celebrations. “I was so happy to see them,” Mary said.
“It was very nice for me because I didn’t do anything - everything was done for me! “Thank you to the committee.
I love them very much.” Call 9546 9512 for information about the Springvale Senior Citizens Multicultural Club.
Station is the platform for city safety launch By CASEY NEILL SAFETY was in the spotlight at Dandenong Railway Station on Tuesday 20 October. The Greater Dandenong Safe City Day featured healthy snacks from Dandenong Market chef Russell Bald and advice from local police. The Greater Dandenong Council event doubled as the launch for its Safe and Harmonious Greater Dandenong: A Community Safety Plan for Greater Dandenong 2015-2022.
The plan will build on achievements at Dandenong Railway Station from the previous Community Safety Plan (20102014) which included new CCTV systems, PSOs, improved cleanliness, maintenance and staffing, a plaza opposite the station and Halpin Way, and a redeveloped bus interchange and taxi rank. Mayor Sean O’Reilly said a safe community meant everyone who lived, worked, travelled, played and visited could do so without risk to their health and wellbeing. “A safe community is also one that’s
based on co-operation, respect, partnership and pride,” he said. The plan’s six key priorities are supporting diversity and promoting harmony, preventing family violence, creating safer public places, safety for road users, pedestrians and commuters, addressing alcohol and other drugs harms, and emerging technology and safety. “These priorities are the foundations of a plan that will take Greater Dandenong into a future that is more secure, healthy and strong,” Cr O’Reilly said.
He said addressing these priorities would involve partnerships, co-operation and connections, designing public spaces to improve safety, a community development approach to community safety and promoting community safety approaches and initiatives. “We are not oblivious to the challenges - which means we are equally committed to identifying and addressing the safety priorities to ensure that our rich and diverse community continues to feel safe, respected and resilient,” he said.
Police seeking this man POLICE are appealing for public help to find Dandenong man Michael Burke. A warrant has been issued for the 36-year-old’s arrest, for failing to attend court in relation to drug offences. Police also want to speak to Burke in relation to a string of burglaries in the Dandenong area, which he is believed to be frequenting. He is about 170 centimetres tall with a thin build, brown eyes, olive complexion and black hair. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au with any information.

The young people who will be shaping Melbourne’s real estate future attended the RMIT - Red23 Industry Learning Day recently. More than 50 RMIT property, construction and project management students were given real life experience in how to create, manage and complete a property development by leading industry experts. The Industry Learning Day, organized by residential sales and marketing group Red23, was designed to give third and fourth year property students exposure to the complexities of property development in a “live” environment. The students were presented with many practical example aspects of the types of property development that they are studying in their property, construction and project management degree.
Key development topics were examined in presentations by Russel Tait, Project Planner from the City of Greater Dandenong, Rolland Gorriceta from the Burbank Group and David Lunardi a development manager at Intrapac. The topics covered all aspects of the delivery of the projects including site acquisition, planning, legal, marketing, construction, operation and risk mitigation. The three presenters used real live examples across both land and built-form in the Dandenong region following site visits to Burbank’s Metro VillageMosaic apartments in central Dandenong and Intrapac’s Somerfield project in Keysborough. “Red23 is extremely committed to affording our future leaders an understanding of the
development process and best practice principles,” Red23’s general manager of research and business development Andrew Perkins said. “This year, Red23 are particularly proud as the Industry Learning Day, for the first time, formed part of the students’ official assessment criteria. “Red23 are extremely grateful for the support from Burbank, Intrapac, Carlisle Homes and the City of Greater Dandenong,” Mr Perkins said. The medium density Metro is the type of urban in-fill development that is rapidly emerging as a new housing form in metropolitan Melbourne while Somerfield is a more traditional residential subdivision that incorporates the latest trends in medium density housing.

Grounds for excitement By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE self-funded futsal courts, tennis courts and athletics track at Mt Hira College in Keysborough has left the school of 533 students itching to get moving. The $260,000 sports facilities were officially opened for use on Wednesday 7 October, and principal Sareh Salarzadeh said it was fantastic to see the students making the most of the grounds. “Before the construction the area was just grassland, now we have three synthetic futsal courts, three tennis courts and a running track,” Ms Salarzadeh said. The major upgrade was also celebrated by Federal Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus who cut the ribbon. “I’m sure that this new sports ground will offer great opportunity to Mt Hira College’s students and aspiring athletes,” Mr Dreyfus said.
Ms Salarzadeh said the grounds had made a big contribution to the college’s existing basketball courts and football oval, opening the doors to a whole range of different sports. “The teachers are in the process of looking into a new sports curriculum to make the most of the new courts because it’s quite hard to play hockey on grass,” Ms Salarzadeh said. After being in construction for about eight weeks, Ms Salarzadeh said she was looking forward to watching the students’ abilities improve with practice. “Not everyone is academic and some students shine in sports and we need to bring out the best in every child and facilities like these will help us do that,” she said. The college is now waiting on town planning permits with the hope of starting construction on a VCE centre next year.

Carers' kindness praised A NEW aged care centre in Keysborough is leading the way. Peak aged care body Leading Aged Services Australia (LASA) has selected Arcare Keysborough as an example of one of the state’s most transformed developments. Delegates from around the country toured the Stanley Road facility as part of a recent national LASA conference. They heard about Arcare’s innovative dedicated staff assignment, which involves all staff working with the same small number of residents every time they come to work. Arcare’s strategy and innovation manager Daniella Greenwood devised the approach, which focuses on building relationships and celebrating old age rather than treating it as a sickness. “Treating the elderly with respect and truly valuing humanness and relationships between older people, staff and family members is where the industry is heading,” she said. “The main thing is that we are all treated as people and not a diagnosis or set of illnesses.” Arcare Keysborough will hold an open day from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 14 November at 85 Stanley Road, Keysborough.

Brothers stand IT’S been a big few months at Hallam’s Wastech - from acquiring another business to opening a service centre and bringing in new trucks from Germany. Taking home the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year Award, as well as this year’s Manufacturing Award, can now join the list. Neil Bone accepted the honour at a gala dinner at Cranbourne Racing Club on Thursday 22 October. “Thank you to (brother and business partner) Paul for putting up with me for 23 years,” Neil said. “It’s the people that stand

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Legal advice for free I EARNESTLY ask the local community leaders, government officials, including Australian police, asylum seekers and refugees’ support services for better commitment in advocating for appropriate supports and resources to meet the needs of asylum seekers and refugees. Practical and constructive steps must be taken through government, police and local community collaboration to respond to the pressing needs of refugees and asylum seekers. Local communities must be the foremost voice on asylum seekers’ rights, issues and needs. It must be thoroughly acknowledged by the local the government and police that asylum seekers are often fleeing from conflict, human rights violations and persecution and come to our community seeking safety and protection. It is important to uphold asylum seekers’ human and legal rights and demonstrate compassion. It was alleged that Mr Amini, a few days prior to ending his life, was living out of his car for
fear of being arrested by the police after he was told by his room-mates that the police attended his home address looking for him. He feared he was going to be sent back to Afghanistan if he was arrested by the police. Further, it is said that the Immigration Department was well aware that Mr Amini was suffering from mental illnesses and that his mental health was deteriorating. The question remains whether or not Mr Amini’s mental condition was taken serious enough by the government authorities in dealing with any alleged charges against him and a decision to deport him back to his country. It has now become apparent that the burden on Mr Amini was significant enough to cause him burn himself alive. I offer pro bono legal advice for asylum seekers on bridging visas with respect to any criminal charges they may be facing. I can be contacted on 9225 7444 or email roona@vicbar5.com.au. On trail of Anzacs By CASEY NEILL AN INTERACTIVE tribute to Greater Dandenong’s World War I connections now traverses the municipality. The council launched the Anzac Trail at Noble Park RSL on Friday 23 October featuring markers at nine locations. “There are stories that belong to our community, that are significant to our community,” public art and heritage program leader Annetta Latham said. “If we don’t tell them we just felt that we’d lose them as generations moved forward. “For us it’s about keeping those stories alive and honouring those who have come before us. “It’s just something that we can treasure as a community.” The markers in the Anzac Centenary project feature “augmented reality”. “We have tail-blazed a little on this one,” Ms Latham said. “You can see images and read the information on the trail markers, but you can also download an app on your phone. “You can access different photos of what happened at the site and different audio - some old speeches of councillors and mayors at the time, some other facts about what happened at that site.” The council worked with researcher Natalie Filmer, the Dandenong and Springvale historical societies, RSLs, historians at the Shrine of Remembrance and Anzac House. Ms Latham said they cut through the myths passed down through generations.
Noble Park RSL's Ray McCarthy. “We went from collecting people’s stories about what they believed or what they thought, to finding out what the facts were behind the different sites and why they were relevant,” she said. “I know these stories now and they’ve become part of me.” The former Dandenong Town Hall, now the Drum Theatre, was the first marker site and where recruits enlisted. The Dandenong Drill Hall was built in 1916 and was used to drill citizen soldiers in compulsory military training, and the Noble Park marker recognises the town’s role as a soldier settlement. Langford was Dandenong High School’s first principal and a marker honours the now-defunct Springvale Mechanics Institute, opened in 1915 and the scene of WWI fund-raisers. A marker at Dandenong RSL honours local soldiers and one at Springvale Town Hall relates to the Springvale and Dandenong Red Cross branches which were formed out of the Great War. The Peace Memorial Bridge on Lonsdale Street was built during the war and still features original engineering elements that were ground-breaking in their time. “We want to make sure those stories are told,” Ms Latham said.

Champions one and all A TEAM of 18 Dandenong High school students are state soccer champions. Winning 2-1 against Strathmore Secondary College, coach and teacher Garett Cree-Smith said his team of Year 9 and 10 students were a focused and talented bunch. “A lot of the students play soccer together outside of school and some play at very high levels so they were coming in quite skilled,” Mr CreeSmith said. “But they still had to work as a team and they gave 100 per cent we were actually up 2-nil most of the game, Strathmore scored their one goal with five minutes left.” Not worried about losing the championship until the very last minute Mr Cree-Smith said he had a
lot of help from experienced Year 12 soccer brains Shawkat and Mohammed who helped him coach. “They did a great job with game plans - I was basically there to supervise,” he said. A maths and science teacher, Mr Cree-Smith said winning the state championship meant a lot to the school. “Dandenong High School hasn’t won anything at a state level for quite some time, it was good for the students to get a medal and a banner and that will stay up at the school,” he said. The team played three different rounds to make it into the grand final which was played in Thornbury earlier this month.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Leaving the lab By CASEY NEILL SCIENTISTS are leaving the lab and meeting manufacturers, with innovation in their sights. A CSIRO and the South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) collaboration is also taking manufacturers off the factory floor and introducing them to researchers. CSIRO strategic initiatives and collaboration director Ros Hore said the meetings held since March have opened her team’s eyes. “They didn’t realise there were so many manufacturing businesses basically on our doorstep,” she said. “We’ve got a whole manufacturing research program. There’s probably close to 200 scientists.” Ms Hore said they now had a better understanding of how businesses operated, the issues they were facing and their needs. “Collaboration for an innovation outcome is the ultimate goal, but if we can just start broadening the dialogue...” she said. “This is not a quick fix. “This is all about relationships. Relationships take trust and a lot of talking.” Ms Hore said scientists toured manufacturing facilities and then came up with ideas for improvements. “We put it back onto the company to then select what they’d like to pursue further,” she said. “At the moment it’s not costing businesses anything other than their time. “Industry don’t think about going to CSIRO for solutions. “And they don’t even realise that not everything requires a research solution, but we can often connect them to a solution. “We can’t do everything but we have a wealth of information.” SEMMA executive officers Adrian Boden said: “We can confidently say that despite having visited only seven businesses, the collaboration has already achieved its objectives.” “Businesses have appreciated getting access to the expertise of leading scientists from the CSIRO and have also found that the process was not as complicated as they imagined.” Ray Keefe from Berwick’s Successful Endeavours has so far had four meetings with the CSIRO.
“The first was a visit by them to our office to understand our business a little better and to help them work out where the fit might be,” he said. “From that came a number of groups within the CSIRO expressing an interest in having a more detailed discussion.” Mr Keefe spoke with groups in the big data and modelling area and in instrument development technologies. “The big data group have some re-
ally world-class capability,” he said. “Our potential work with them would be augmenting that with some of our own technology so that can provide a complete solution rather than a component of a solution.” He’ll meet with a third group later in the year. “They are interested in low power telemetry, an area we also work in, and could have some useful technology in that space,” he said.
SEMMA executive officer Adrian Boden and president Simon Whiteley. 142505
Unique products could shape the future By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG South company hopes some unique products will come from a CSIRO partnership. U-Neek Bending managing director Les Sabo applauded efforts to connect businesses in the south east with scientists. “Our biggest problem always has been how do we make contact,” he said. “You might have an idea of some sort and you just don’t know where to go.” He toured the CSIRO facilities at Monash University in Clayton. “They showed us all their latest gear,” he said. “We’ve got some ideas we want to explore with them. “I really think it’s a really big step forward for us. “Whether those ideas materialise or not I’m not sure yet, but at least we’ve got some ideas. “At least we know where to go and talk to someone. We’ll see where it takes us. “If we can develop something that’s unique to us, hopefully we can export it as well.” The U-Neek name might not be instantly recognisable but most people regularly encounter its products, from the unique roof that marked Spencer Street Railway Station’s transformation into Southern Cross, to hand rails on buses, trains and trams. “We do a lot of work for power stations. You don’t see it. It’s all hidden,” Mr Sabo said. U-Neek has been rolling and bending metals since 1964, and also supplies the defence, transport, mining and architectural industries. “Our strength’s been that we’ve been able to change over time,” Mr Sabo said. “What’s the future for us? “I think it’s to be more service-oriented perhaps - even more than what we are now - and having more of our own products, whatever that might be.” Business development manager John Lovell said value-adding had helped the business to grow.
Managing director Les Sabo and business development manager John Lovell with a giant coil. 145255
“So instead of just bending componentry for other companies we’re manufacturing the whole unit,” he said. Mr Lovell came on board in 1998. “I worked for an automated design house where we manufactured concept cars,” he said. “That was purchased by an American company and shipped offshore. “I saw an ad, applied for the ad and met Les. “I didn’t know there were companies that bent steel!” Mr Sabo joined in 1989. He was a young engineer out of work and was offered three jobs on the same day. “This was the smallest company. It offered me some sort of challenge where I thought I could see that I could make a difference, maybe,” he said. He said competitors were always biting at their heels.
“I think there’s people that try and copy us or emulate us,” he said. “That’s probably a compliment. “You can’t run away from it but you can try and stay ahead of it. “That’s what we try to do by investing in new machines and getting good people. “We can’t compete on price so we’ve got to compete on service, delivery, quality, back-up, reliability of supply - sometimes those things are more important than price to some people.” Mr Sabo said U-Neek could get parts to repair breakdowns within hours. “You can’t get that from China,” he said. “We want to remain the leaders in our field and we manage to, I think.” Mr Lovell added: “And we have a bit of fun doing it.”
Testing times for workplace drugs By CASEY NEILL ICE use is on the rise in Greater Dandenong workplaces. Rob Foran’s The Drug Detection Agency (TDDA) franchise has been operating in Dandenong North since January. He said cannabis was still the number one illicit drug. “Unfortunately methamphetamine or ice is becoming more prevalent in our testing,” he said. “It’s on the increase.” Mr Foran completes drug and alcohol testing for companies with safety-sensitive staff roles, such as warehousing, manufacturing, transport and construction. “On top of that we do policy development, education and training sessions,” he said. “Managers need to be across it in more detail. They need to maybe be aware of signs that staff could be using drugs at work or could be affected and come to work in an unfit state.” Mr Foran conducts oral testing using swabs “much like mobile police but it searches for a few more drugs”. “We also do urine testing,” he said. “Whatever testing we do is conducted in the mobile vans we have.” TDDA also does hair testing “which gives a
longer detection time”. “It can go back 12 months in the drug history,” Mr Foran said. Mr Foran liaises with his client when a worker returns a positive test result. “By that stage there’ll be a policy set in place,” he said. “It’s very rare these days you find someone sacked off the back of one positive result. “We always suggest assistance first.” He said Greater Dandenong wasn’t really a hot-spot for workplace drug use. “From the stats that I see, Dandenong isn’t glaringly obviously bad,” he said. “We can find clusters of problems in a particular workplace. “You might find a number of people using drugs because there’s a dealer in the workplace. “That can happen everywhere. “Workplace is just a reflection of society.” Mr Foran tests for prescription drugs, too. “The one that we specifically test for is known as benzodiazepine,” he said. “They’re prescription-only but we occasionally find people who abuse them like any prescription medication. “Benzos can be quite dangerous in the workplace - if someone’s drowsy and they’re using
Drug tester Rob Foran. 145915 machinery, there’s a risk around that.” TDDA can also test for methamphetamine laboratories. “We can go into a residence that may have been used for methamphetamine production and
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS we can swab walls and other surfaces,” he said. Landlords or real estate agents usually utilise the service. “The residual chemicals can be quite a health concern,” he said.

OPENING five months ago, the Chaat and Grill Indian Restaurant offers authentic Indian food and beverages. Manager Radhay Kishan said curries and chaats are traditional street foods that can be found on the streets of India. “We also have tandoori breads cooked in the tandoor which is a clay oven,” he said. “Seafood is available now, too.” He said the decor was attrac-
tive and could cater for up to 60 to 80 customers with an outdoor area coming soon which accommodate another 30. Radhay said the staff is friend and there were plenty of great chef’s specials to tempt any palate. Chef and owner Radhay has been a chef since 1975 and has worked in five star hotels in India before going on to Dubai in the early '80s and Australia in 1982.
He has opened and run several restaurants all over Victoria. And to complement the wide range of food there are also half-priced drinks from Monday to Thursday, 6pm to 8pm. Capiron’s top gong By DAVID NAGEL DANDENONG Stingrays defender Daniel Capiron has bounced back from a disappointing 2014 season to take out this year’s club best and fairest award. The 19-year-old, who emerged as an exciting talent in 2013, made slow progression last year but has reignited his AFL draft prospects with a solid and consistent season. The 189-centimetre 83-kilogram strong-marking half-back won the award despite playing just 12 games for the season. He played seven senior games for Frankston in the VFL. He won the award from fellow defender and former Beaconsfield premiership player Brandon White, with talented midfielder Bailey Rice back in third place. Stingrays’ coach Craig Black believes Capiron has all the tools to make it at the elite level of the game. “He’s in contention to get drafted, there’s no doubt, and he certainly has the attributes to make it in the AFL,” Black said. “His ability to bounce back from last year shows he’s mentally strong and he polled in just about every game with us this year. He really consistent and reads the ball well and went at 74 per cent with his kicking this year ... that’s outstanding.” Black, who will coach the Stingrays in 2016, said the AFL National Draft, to be held in Adelaide on Tuesday 24 November, was an exciting time for the club. “Normally if you get two or three drafted, you’re happy, but we have the

“But there are no guarantees, just like every other year some exciting players will miss out.”

Over 100 he may be, but he’s not over the hill By RUSSELL BENNETT STORIES like Alan Sauvarin’s are what make local cricket so great. No matter the age, no matter the experience, no matter the ability - it’s a sport for everyone. Alan, better known as ‘Munga’ to most in the local sporting community, was 13 when he started playing cricket. Earlier this month, after 44 years in the sport, he finally scored his maiden century - 121 not out for his beloved Beaconsfield in the Dandenong and District Cricket Association’s (DDCA) F Grade competition against Lynbrook. The 57-year-old’s cricketing journey began in Leongatha but he’s been at the Tigers since 1983 - a stretch that spans more than 360 senior games in Beaconsfield colours. He’s been on the committee, has been a much-loved junior coach to many, and is still active in the social side of things. “You could use the word ‘everything’ to describe what the club means to me,” he said. “If I didn’t love it I wouldn’t have been there since 1983.” But Sauvarin classifies himself, in simple terms, as a cricketing “spud”. By his own estimation he averages about one half century for every five seasons he’s played and he never made it into the 70s until last week. “Someone showed my My Cricket page and I’m averaging about 11 since that came on, so for me to hit 121 not out is something out of the ballpark!” Sauvarin - a usual lower-order batsman - opened along with skipper Declan McDermott. After McDermott (5) and Will Ryan
Great mates Wayne Hocking and Alan Sauvarin shared a massive partnership in Beaconsfield’s F Grade game on the weekend. (16) fell relatively cheaply, Sauvarin put on a whopping 191-run stand with great mate Wayne Hocking. Then, when Hocking - a fellow Beaconsfield legend - fell for 117, Sauvarin set about putting on another massive stand - this time with Wayne’s son Jarrod (35 not out). “There’s absolutely no way known I’ll ever get another hundred,” Sauvarin told the Journal. “I’ll try, but I’ve got one now and that’s enough for me.
“I hit 100 on Sunday too ... but that was on the golf course, and I smashed past 121!” In the coming seasons, Sauvarin said he wants to play over-60s cricket and be the young energetic boundary fieldsman of the team. He’s loving life at Beaconsfield, which he said has been reinvigorated by its move to the DDCA and the installation of a turf centre wicket. “We’ve got a new coach, we’ve got a new league, we’ve got a new turf wicket
and we’ve got a new direction,” he said. “It is just exciting and it’s just ... wow.” Sauvarin said the unknown - just how Beaconsfield’s sides would fare in the DDCA for the rest of the season - added a real element of excitement, but he - like his fellow Tiger brethren - is still chasing success. And as for individual goals for the remainder of 2015/16, Sauvarin said he’d settle for another 121 runs. Total.

Female footy fun makes its mark AFL Victoria, the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) and AFL South East have released plans to establish a regional division of the VWFL for 2016. This progression comes on the back of extraordinary growth of the game at all levels of the female sector of the sport, and is a key part of the strategy to establish national, state, premier and localised female competitions. Eight teams are targeted for the inaugural year of the regional competition; with these being a collection of newly formed teams and others from the lower grades of established clubs. The competition would remain under the management and control of the VWFL in the first year, transferring to a local administrative structure in 2017 under the AFL South East Commission. Discussions are continuing with a number of clubs regarding the creation of new teams; however the VWFL and AFL South East are extremely confident that the goal of an eightteam competition will be realised in the first year. AFL South East region general manager Jeremy Bourke said this move was an exciting development for the region and a reflection of the level of interest female football had created in the region. “To think that in 2013, we had one Youth Girls team on the Mornington Peninsula and now we have over 20 Youth and Junior Girls teams is just extraordinary,” Bourke said. “Combine that with the growth of female football in the South East Juniors and our region has had the most significant increase in participation in female football in Australia over the past two years. The creation of a regional senior women’s competition is the natural progression and we are extremely excited to be the first area in Victoria for this to occur”. AFL Victoria’s female football manager Darren Flanigan was excited at the prospect of working with AFL South East on the project. “The unprecedented growth of female football allows the VWFL to join forces with AFL South East and create the first ever regional women’s competition in Victoria,” Flanigan said. “The VWFL and AFL Victoria see region competitions as a vital step for all female footballers to gain access to open age competitions without the need to travel to metropolitan Melbourne to participate in their sport of choice.” Further details around team composition will be released shortly. Any club interested in fielding teams in the new competition are asked to contact AFL Victoria on 8341 6000.

Pies’ black future By DAVID NAGEL IT MAY be looking forward with an intense and steely glare but Narre Warren has gone back to the future with the appointment of former Fremantle and St Kilda star Heath Black as its coach for 2016. Not since 2006, when Black’s former StKilda team-mate Austinn Jones took over from Paul Hamilton at Kalora Park, have the Magpies invested their faith in such a high-profile leader. The Jones experiment worked wonders, the Magpies winning three consecutive flags from 2006 to 2008 in his only three years at the helm. The 36-year-old Black, who shared 192 games between the Dockers and Saints from 1997 to 2008, takes over the top job from Chris Toner, who won back-toback flags in 2012-13 during his five-year reign at the club. Black understands expectations are high at Fox Road. “What I do know about Narre Warren is that it judges itself on premierships, so the pressure is going to be on to perform,” said Black, who finished second to Peter Bell in Fremantle’s 2001 best and fairest award. The 2005 Australian International Rules representative said the Magpies put forward a case that was hard to refuse, forcing him to change his mind on the direction of both his life and his coaching career. Black coached at his old stomping ground at Mazenod College last year and it was all supposed to end there.
“It was out of the blue, there’s no doubt about that, because finishing up with Mazenod in the Amateurs last year was going to close the chapter on my coaching career,” he said. “But the way Narre Warren handled themselves, their professionalism, and their honesty in particular, was a real clincher for me to come and have an interview. It happened quickly and it’s already changed my life over the last two weeks.” Black said his decision to leave Mazenod should not be mistaken for a lack of passion for the game. “I was coaching at Mazenod and also coaching junior footy which took me away from my family,” the father of three said. “But taking on this role, I’ve taken away that junior aspect which releases me for two days, and we’ve decided to shuffle things around a bit at home to suit. I’m looking forward to the competition, it’s a strong comp, I was surprised how strong it is, Narre Warren president Tim Allan welcomes the club’s new and I’m looking forward to the coach, former AFL star Heath Black, to Kalora Park. 145802 Picture: DAVID NAGEL challenge of making a great club even greater.” The classy left-footer, who one my strengths. Outstanding year for race carnival THE world’s greatest racing carnival has passed half way and it is again proving an outstanding year. The BMW Caulfield Cup Carnival was a top class opening chapter for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival which culminates in the 59th running of the Group 2 $301,000 William Hill Sandown Guineas (1600 metres) on Saturday 14 November at William Hill Park, Sandown. The International Quarantine Centre at Werribee has been overflowing with the large number of international performers who are seeking a share of the riches on offer, especially for the 155th Emirates Melbourne Cup and prize money for that race of $6 million plus $200,000 in trophies. The internationals have already shown their quality and some are here for other races than the ‘majors’. Owners and trainers realise that the prize money in Australia is on a par with the best in the world and exceeds what is mostly available in Europe. It is expensive to make the trip but it can be rewarding. At the weekend, Moonee Valley took its turn with the running of the Cox Plate and this week the attention turns to Flemington. Racing purists have always declared this Saturday as the finest day of racing on the Australasian calendar and one of the major international days, although it is now being challenged by BECK Caulfield Guineas Day. Saturday’s program features four Group 1s, two Group 2s and three at Group 3 level and is a perfect opening to the most important racing and social week of the year. It is a week that will attract thousands of visitors from around Australia and internationally and inject a considerable amount into the local economy. Feature of the day is the 161st running of the Group 1 $1,510,000 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500 metres). The Caulfield Classic (2000 metres) (formerly the Norman Robinson Stakes) on Caulfield Cup Day has always been a good guide to the Vic-

toria Derby. This year’s winner was Sacred Eye, the only filly in the race and her target will be the Crown Oaks. Lizard Island, trained at Cranbourne by Pat Hyland, was always up on the pace and ran home well for second after an impressive second in the Caulfield Guineas. He looks an enormous chance. Etymology and Get The Picture ran excellent races. Tarzino ran home well for seventh in the Caulfield Guineas. Vanborough has good Sydney form having won his last three including the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000 metres) at Randwick. Last Wednesday Extra Choice from the Lindsay Park stable had his first run in blinkers and impressively won the Geelong Classic (2200 metres). The race has been a strong Derby guide. “He was always travelling well and there is nothing else I would want to be on,” jockey Ben Melham said. Saturday also features the Group 1 weight-for-age $1,002,500 Longines Mackinnon Stakes (2000 metres), which will see many having their final start before the Melbourne Cup. The Group 3 $301,500 Lexus Stakes (2500 metres) will also see horses making their last bid for a Melbourne Cup start as the winner is exempt from the ballot. The Group 1 $502,500 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200 metres) will feature some start sprinters and the Group 1 $502,500 Myer Classic (1600 metres) will attract top fillies and mares. The day will attract a massive crowd to Flemington that, with the next three days, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday week, will be sure to draw a total of about 350,000 patrons.

Door opens up to power By DEREK OGDEN IT’S been a long time, but well worth the wait. When the Hyundai Veloster first came out, with its out-there looks and unusual architecture, it shaped up to be a challenger to the hot-hatch mob. Unfortunately, somebody had forgotten about giving it the performance to match. The Veloster was held back by a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. Fortunately, we forgave shortcomings, much talk being of the sedan-cum-coupe styling, with two doors on the passenger side, only one on the driver’s side. The result was the dismissal of the inconvenience of squeezing in and out of the back seats through a single entrance as in a conventional coupe. It wasn’t until later when a turbocharger was hung off the motor that things began to heat up. I have had to wait until now and the Series II to taste the added grunt with a stint with a rangetopping Veloster SR + Turbo, which comes to market at $36,490, plus on-road costs. The Veloster Series II has taken on more of Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture styling with a distinctive grey grille surround and 18-inch alloy wheels in a choice of two new styles, both shod with sporty 225/40 R18 tyres. However, the popularity of the Veloster seems to have dampened some of the car’s curiosity quotient. It was, in fact, the new unique Blue Sprinter matt paint finish of the test vehicle that ‘stole the show’. Taking up from the exterior, the test car cabin had blue highlights scattered all around, including the word ‘turbo’ on the sides of the

front seat backs. Contrasting stitching can be found on the steering wheel and coloured seatbelts are about to be installed with the newest models. Also new is an electroluminescent sports-style instrument cluster, while driver and front passenger are treated to power adjustable heated and ventilated seats. The whole thing is topped off with a panoramic glass sunroof. Up-to-date connectivity comes courtesy of a 7.0-inch LCD touchscreen displaying satellite navigation, CD player, MP3 input and three years HERE MapCare. Veloster Series II is powered by Hyundai’s direct-injection 1.6-litre Gamma engine, in naturally aspirated or turbocharged form. Power and torque figures for both engine types are unchanged. Turbo + power and torque are 150kW at 6000rpm and 265Nm between 1750 and 4500rpm. Exclusive to the SR Turbo range is a smooth shifting seven-speed double clutch transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts. The all-new seven-speed DCT offers fast changes and improved fuel economy, measured on the official test at 7.1 litres / 100 km, down from 7.6. Six airbags - driver and front passenger, driver and front passenger side (thorax), full-length curtains - offer passive protection for occupants, while Electronic Stability Control including, Traction Control, Anti-lock Braking, Electronic Brake force Distribution, Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Management aim to keep the car out of trouble in the first place. Hill-start Assist Control, somewhat pointlessly offered with auto only, helps with setting off on steep inclines. A rear-view camera lets you keep track of ob-

stacles when reversing. After a slowish turbo take-up, the engine chimes in with a rorty note when urged with continued pedal pressure but the Veloster is short on the out-and-out exuberance of a true hot-hatch, even when using the paddle shifts. Fuel consumption of the test vehicle was clocked at six litres per 100 kilometres in highway cruising but turned out a thirsty customer with up to 13 litres per 100 guzzled in the suburbs. The Veloster SR + skipped along nicely, the wheels anchored firmly to the bitumen, even on the
broken surfaces of some poorly maintained roads, thanks, no doubt, in no small part to the Aussie input of the suspension and steering tuning. Veloster Series II has dumped the previous Veloster’s 16-bit Motor Driven Power Steering in favour of latest-tech 32-bit system. The SR Turbo + also adopts Hyundai’s driveradjustable three-mode Flex Steer system. While not calling up the word ‘tepid’, the Veloster SR + fails to match performance with many of the so-called hot hatches of today. What it does have is looks to carry it off. And there’s the sub30K turbo tag.
