and council, overall, had the same goal - to make the area the best they could. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s environment, history, community groups or service clubs, everybody’s there for the same purpose - they want to make Yarra Ranges a better place, Cr McCarthy said. A Yarra Ranges Council spokesperson said that Cr McCarthy had presented “at least 50 formal speeches during her time as mayor, as well as a number of informal speeches.
Cr McCarthy said that she had lost much of her public speaking confidence in recent years, after experiencing medical issues, though some had been regained through her time with Wandin Toastmasters Club. “Although I was a Toastmaster before and I had my own business, I was quite confident in my own space - but I lost that, she said. “They’ve been very helpful - even sitting in the chair, it’s helped just to be confident speaking and using the microphone.
“It felt quite good to be in the chair yesterday (Tuesday 13 October). Cr McCarthy said no-one had yet put their hand up for the mayoral position, though nominations would be organised in the lead-up to the meeting. Which Yarra Ranges councillor would you like to see take the top job for the coming year? Write a Letter to the Editor at editor@mailnewsgroup. com.au or to 244 Maroondah Highway, Healesville, 3777.

YARRA Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy will not be seeking re-election when councillors meet for their mayoral election next month. Cr McCarthy told the Mail that she would not contest the position of mayor at the 17 November special council meeting, where councillors elect the mayor and deputy mayor for the coming year. “I’m looking forward to going back to being just the councillor, and my
home will be happy, she said, referencing a garden that had been neglected during her mayoral year. “I’m not interested in being reelected. Describing her time as mayor as a “big eye-opener, Cr McCarthy said that her year in the mayor’s chair put her in contact with community groups and organisations outside of her own ward of Billanook. She paid tribute to the groups around the Yarra Ranges, and said they

By PETER DOUGLAS VICTORIA Police have confirmed to the Mail the death of a Sassafras man, 54, after the vehicle in which he was travelling hit a bus in Belgrave on Friday afternoon. Witnesses have told investigating officers the man was seen travelling west along Mount Dandenong-Tourist Road about 5.30pm, when he veered onto the wrong side of the road and crashed his car into a bus. The man died at the scene, while the bus driver and a passenger escaped serious injury. Lilydale police are investigating the incident. Meanwhile, a report will also be prepared for the Coroner.

Smiley Jed is judges’ top pick A SIX-year-old girl who used to be terrified of dogs paraded her family’s new chocolate Labrador to take home the Best In Show trophy from the first St Paul’s Junior Dog Show in Monbulk on Saturday. Caitlin Czaja and Jed, who celebrates his first birthday this week, won the class for handlers aged 5-7 years before going on to compete against seven other class winners for the main prize. Monbulk Vet Clinic judges Gemma and Mike Coulter and Tina Kertesz said it was a difficult
decision to make, but praised the temperament and conformation of Jed, who was bred in Tecoma by Lyndhurstlab stud. Organiser Lisa Conway-Lee was ecstatic with the 35 dogs and 50 entries the Junior Dog Show attracted, and said St Paul’s Primary would definitely be running it again next year. “It’s terrific to see so many children handling their dogs so confidently and having a great time as well,” Mrs Conway-Lee said.
Alyssia Stevens’ Labrador, Bear, was second in the Golden Oldies class for those aged eight years and over.
DOOR-SMASHING vandals are being hunted by police, after an incident at Mount Evelyn’s Yarra Hills Secondary College campus last week. Familiarise yourself with snakes that are common in your area. In the event of a bite, identifying the type of snake may help with your pet’s treatment A snakebite rarely bleeds significantly and is notoriously hard to find. If you find a dead snake in your garden, or have reason to believe your pet has been bitten, get your pet to the vet as soon as possible. A pet that has suffered a snakebite initially may show signs of sudden collapse, vomiting, trembling, salivation and excessive panting. It is possible that your dog may also appear normal. Italy a fine learning experience By PETER DOUGLAS WHAT better way to improve Italian speaking skills than by going to school in Venice. A group of 16 members from Emerald U3A recently returned from a two-week visit to Italy where they not only attended an Italian language school but enjoyed the chance to experience the Venice Biennale. The group was led by Emerald U3A’s Italian language tutors Aldo and Dolores Bellemo. Aldo suggested the Italian class members might like to enrol at The Venice Italian School while the 2015 Biennale was on. U3A member Paul Bianco said the members jumped at the opportunity. “The group attended classes from 12 to 26 of September, in three levels, each weekday from 9.30am until 1pm, then had each afternoon to explore Venice,” he said. “They visited the many exhibitions of the Biennale, churches and palaces, a glass factory on Murano and the silks on Burano, and some even attended a concert of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. “Naturally, everyone has come back speaking Italian much better than when they left.” One of the highlights of the Biennale was a visit to the recently completed Australian pavilion, which features an eclec-

Kinders get some cash By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS FOUR kindergartens in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges have received over $45,000 in funding grants from the State Government to improve their building and IT infrastructure. State Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos said over 350 kindergartens would share in $2.6 million worth of grants to improve their services and facilities. “These upgrades will create better playrooms, as well as giving our youngest Victorians access to technology that will form part of their education for
years to come,” she said. All Saints Preschool in Yarra Junction, the Woori Yallock Preschool, Marysville and District Kindergarten, and Talaskia Child Care Centre in Upper Ferntree Gully were awarded the grant money announced on Tuesday 13 October. Kindergartens who have been awarded grant money have received up to $25,000 for minor expansion works, up to $10,000 for minor refurbishment works and up to $1500 in IT grants. In a written statement, Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn
Symes said these grants would improve early childhood education and lead to more effective learning. “As a parent of two young children, I know the importance parents place on our local kinders needing to be up to speed with the latest technology so our kids have opportunities to try different ways of learning,” she said. These grants form part of the Labor Government’s $50 million investment in the early childhood sector through the building and upgrading of kindergartens and children’s centres across Victoria.

Principal has lofty goals By PETER DOUGLAS NEW Emerald Secondary College principal Julie Doble’s philosophy on education is simple but one she believes in wholeheartedly. This being that “every student has the right to learn and can achieve”. Ms Doble said that everything she had set out to achieve in education streams from this statement. She hopes this will stand her in good stead as she begins her journey as head of the renowned local college. “I’m a firm believer that the student needs to be put first, which is always in the best interest of the school,” she said. “Every student has the right to learn, to set themselves goals and to achieve that ambition.” It’s been a long, fascinating journey to the Emerald Secondary College for the enthusiastic educator, with her work life starting on the stages of West End Theatre in the United Kingdom. Ms Doble, who also has a background in the performing arts, was trained in teaching in the UK and came out to Australia 13 years ago. Initially, she temporarily came to the country after gaining a position with the UK Government, which required her to study best practice in Australian education.
Emerald Secondary new principal Jodie Doble. 145306 She was eventually offered a full-time position in Australia and the rest, as they say, is history. Ms Doble is married with two teenage children. In the near future, Ms Doble said she hoped to continue a transparent culture at the school, one which is deeply connected with the community. “I believe the college is the
heart of the community and something people should be proud of,” she said. “I have an open-door policy, as well as high expectations and clear goals about where I want to head.” Ms Doble said she had been actively seeking feedback from her students and looked forward to working closely with them in the coming months.

Cruelty bill By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS LA TROBE MP Jason Wood has introduced a private members’ bill to the House of Representatives to ban the practice of cosmetic testing on animals. Not only would Mr Wood’s bill ban the testing of cosmetics in Australia but would also “phase out the unnecessary developing, manufacturing, selling, advertising or importing into Australia of cosmetics, or ingredients in cosmetics, which have been tested on live animals. Mr Wood introduced his bill on Monday 14 September with an impassioned speech about the cruelty inherent in testing cosmetics on animals. “Cosmetic testing on animals is wrong, it is barbaric, it is cruel and it is no longer necessary, Mr Wood said during his speech. “Testing the ingredients of cosmetics like mascara and shampoo on living creatures is a completely unnecessary cruelty, and it is time Australia joined the growing number of countries around the world which have banned this practice. Mr Wood also quoted results from polls conducted by Nexus Research and Roy Morgan Research that show 85 per cent of Australians oppose using animals in the development of cosmetics. The survey also revealed that the ‘not tested on animals’ label is one of the top three features that Australian consumers look
Newly appointed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull with Member for La Trobe Jason Wood 144389 Picture: CONTRIBUTED for when buying cosmetics. The motion was supported by Steve Irons MP, Kelvin Thompson MP, Melissa Parke MP, and Adam Bandt MP. RSPCA Victoria states that while there is no direct testing of cosmetics involving animals conducted in Australia, the majority of cosmetic products sold here contain ingredients that will have been tested on animals at some point. Mr Wood said in his speech that Australia should join other countries around the world that have phased out and banned testing cosmetics on animals. Countries that have a ban on cosmetic animal testing include the 28-member states of the European Union who were the world’s first set of countries to ban cosmetics tested on animals
in 2009. Along with the EU in already having banned animal testing for cosmetics are Norway, India and Israel. Jason Wood recently met with Senator Fiona Nash, Assistant Minister for Health to discuss the ending of cosmetic testing on animals in Australia. Both agreed the meeting was very positive and the assistant minister is seeking advice from her department on how to best change legislation in relation to animal tested products. Ms Nash is also working on how to change the guidelines for the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme, which is the process by chemical imports and exports are handled in Australia.

Letters Thanks for nothing, NBN Co WHILE the community should be excited about the announcement of the NBN finally coming to the Dandenongs (NBN Rollout Listed, Mail, 20 October 2015), the fact is the Federal Government has severely let down the Dandenongs. They have done this by planning for 19th century technology and expecting it to do a 21st century job. La Trobe MP Jason Wood, who remained silent on the NBN during the last election campaign, now expects that a copper-based solution will be “good enough. Nowhere in the world are governments rolling out copper cables with the intention of providing first-world internet services, but somehow the voters of La Trobe are expected to accept a solution that would not even be considered by a cash-strapped African nation. Recently my neighbours and myself lost telephone and internet connections for more than two weeks when storms took out the overhead copper cables. The technician who eventually came to fix the problem lamented that “the Dandenongs is full of copper just rotting in the pits and yet the current government solution is to replace that copper with even more copper. While Peter Douglas’s article does mention the possibility of Hybrid Fibre Coaxial networks, very little of this technology was implemented in the Dandenongs due to access and topography, these networks basically terminated in Ferntree Gully and never made it up the hill. The obvious solution is to rollout fibre to the premise (FTTP) this will give the community firstworld speeds and reliability that will never be achieved with the government’s “mix of outdated technologies. Mr Wood said he was “proud to be part of the team putting La Trobe on the mark for the NBN rollout (sic), unfortunately that mark is somewhere in the 1950s. If Mr Wood truly wants first world technologies for his electorate, he should be advocating for a fibre-based network across the Dandenongs as a priority. Garry Muratore, Tecoma.
Sour taste THE grand plan by Shannon Bennett with his ‘I am’ attitude to utilise the entry via the original Burnham Beeches gates to inflate his ego takes away the rights of the people to enjoy the Alfred Nicholas Garden, as envisaged in the original handover by the Nicholas family. Two previous managers of Burnham Beeches, when it operated as a hotel, used his existing drive without any problems. If he still sees this as something to be corrected, then he should cut another entry on his own property closer to the gardens. What more will be taken by stealth from the public? He did not purchase the rights to the existing gardens, but could get them by stealth by using this entry on a regular basis. Perhaps Parks Victoria representatives, Messrs Craig Bray and Matthew Hoogland, wish to work as gate keepers and make sure the gates are closed at dusk or later if they wait for patrons to leave from the hotel. I think not. Geoff Birkett, Sassafras.
Fuelling climage change LAST week the Minister for the Environment approved the controversial Adani coal mine. Giving this mine the green light suggests it is OK for the environment. Everyone knows that coal-powered climate change is already damaging a wide variety of environments around the world. We also know that coal is a major source of air pollution and related health problems. Environmentally, it is a no brainer that no new coal mines should be approved. Exporting coal is also wrong morally. It is unethical to sell a product that we know is damaging to the health of present and future generations. The Adani mine is just short-term gain for long-term pain. In south-east Australia, we will experience this pain directly through more droughts and hotter, drier summers and an increased number of extreme bushfire events. Peter Cook, Clematis.

Classroom of the jungle A GROUP of Dandenong Ranges tropical biology students have recently returned from a week-long field trip to Borneo, Malaysia. As part of their studies with Monash University, the group had the chance for a hands-on experience to learn about the plants, animals and ecology of the tropics. The students visited an orang-utan sanctuary and a coastal national park, before spending time undertaking research projects at the Gunung Mulu National Park. Among the group were Annie Lamb (Belgrave), Emily Drummond (Emerald), James Chiefalo (Lysterfield), Belinda Comerford (Seville) and Zoe Birnie (Emerald). Associate Professor Richard Reina, who is a Belgrave Heights local, led the camp and said it was an incredible experience for the students. “The experience of learning about tropical biology in the real-world setting is a fantastic opportunity to connect lectures and practical parts of the
subject,” he said. “‘Doing research projects on frogs, insects, plants, birds and rainforest ecology gives students first-hand exposure to the incredible richness and diversity of life in the tropics. “The students also got to see firsthand some of the conservation issues facing the tropics, including the clearing of rainforest for palm-oil plantations and the impacts of hunting on large animal populations.” Meanwhile, the students couldn’t speak highly enough of their opportunity. Annie described the experience as an eye-opener. “It was confronting to witness first-hand the impacts of deforestation within the tropics, but it was an amazing learning experience to research the overwhelming diversity of the wildlife of Borneo,” she said. The field trip included a visit to Deer Cave, one of the world’s largest caves, home to about four million

Top marks for energy smarts MOUNTAIN District Christian School was recently awarded 2015 Newcomer of the Year and 2015 Energy Secondary School of the Year at the recent presentation of Resource Smart Education Awards. A total of 120 schools in Victoria nominated themselves, while 40 schools were shortlisted and six schools were presented with awards. The Monbulk-based school received two awards. The Resource Smart Edu-
cation Awards are Victoria’s largest sustainability awards program for schools and early childhood services. These awards were presented by Stan Krpan from Sustainability Victoria and Paul Geason from Momentum Energy. The 2015 Newcomer of the Year is awarded to the school that has not nominated themselves before for these awards and has begun to progress in sustainability, and particularly energy and biodiversity.
The 2015 Energy Secondary School of the Year is awarded to the school that shows the most progress in the decrease use of non-renewable energy. Each entrant aimed to help educate future leaders and ingrain sustainability in the lives of Victorians. They did this through either helping to reduce waste to landfill, protecting waterways, saving energy, educating the community or enhancing the biodiversity of their school.

High spirits at fair By KATH GANNAWAY ROVING minstrels, jousting knights, market stalls and lots of hearty tucker kept the 3000 or so visitors to Camelot Castle at Yellingbo in high spirits on Sunday. The annual Medieval Village Fair was a huge success, bringing local and visiting families and community groups. The event is auspiced by WHYLD and run by Yellingbo CFA, Camelot Castle and Woori Community House to give local families an affordable day out in spring. The Punch & Judy show was a huge success again this year along with the free games organised by the Hoddles Creek CFA Junior volunteers. Event spokesperson Sonja Mazar from Woori Community House said the fair was about giving back to the community and promoting community spirit and networking. “It is great to see this event so well supported by local people and organisations,” she said. Ms Mazar said the financial support for the event by the Woori Yallock Community (Bendigo) Bank was a great example of that support. “They really have put back into the community to enable us to put on a low-cost family day and without their support it wouldn’t happen. She saidYarra Valley FM radio station was another great supporter. Donations made on the day will assist Yellingbo CFA.

All the comforts of home By KATH GANNAWAY THE work of more than 40 Country Women’s Association members, along with contributions from other community craft groups from around the Yarra Valley feature in Home Comforts to the Front, a patchwork and textile exhibition that opened at The Memo in Healesville on Friday night. Presented by the CWA’s Wanallock Branch, it’s a WWI Centenary exhibition that looks at a very different aspect of the war, focusing on the work and the role of the women back home. It’s a little-known story presented through contemporary pieces and treasured family WWI mementos. Co-ordinator, Wanda McPherson, said thousands of items of clothing, including
socks and sheepskin vests were sent overseas on the troop ships. The exhibition includes contemporary textiles and original hand-made items that were sent to husbands and family members to provide comfort while they were overseas. Original WWI knitting patterns will be presented as well as reproductions of these items that demonstrate the skills of the artists. Mrs McPherson said many of the exhibits have personal stories attached to them and added that researching and making the items had been an emotional undertaking for many of the women. She said the exhibition was an eclectic collection that would appeal to people of different ages and interests. “A lot of exhibitions and
events throughout the early part of this year have focused on the major role the men played and the conflict and I think now we can step back and reflect on the contributions women made,” she said. The exhibition was funded by the Federal Government ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program and was officially opened by Casey MP, Tony Smith. Mrs McPherson thanked both the Federal Government and Yarra Ranges Council for supporting the project, which she said had enabled it to be presented as a free exhibition. Home Comforts to the Front will be on show until Tuesday, 17 November. Visit www.culturetracks.info for more information.

Facebook.com/PakenhamGazette Facebook.com/DandenongJournal Facebook.com/CranbourneBerwickNews Facebook.com/MailNewsGroup
ME AND Earl and the Dying Girl is an acclaimed indie film with a big heart but a poor judge of character. Withdrawn high-school senior and amateur filmmaker Greg (Thomas Mann) is pushed into a friendship with Rachel (Olivia Cooke), a classmate who has been diagnosed with leukaemia and finds himself caring about her far more than he ever expected.
I should have loved this movie. The performances are outstanding, the visual style is lush and the film is bursting with love for classic cinema, including frequent references to the great German director/artistic wacko Werner Herzog. But Me and Etc. feels emotionally lukewarm due to a severe, foolish imbalance of its main characters. Anti-heroes are an established and fascinating species of character, but Greg is so weaselly, sullen and unambitious that he becomes insufferable to watch. Furthermore, he only de-
velops because other characters admonish or force him to, which deprives him of agency. Rachel is a sweet character and her slow, inexorable death (and its toll on her self-image) is heartbreaking, but we see far too little of her to receive the full intended impact. Earl (Ronald Cyler) is also a fairly superficial presence in the overall plot. With a truly terrible protagonist sinking what would have otherwise been a touching film, Me And Earl And The Dying Girl needs more of the dying girl and less of the “me”. - SETH HYNES

A SUMMER of love? Maybe not, but it will certainly be a summer of fish, chips, rhythm and blues in the Hills with Graham Greene’s Novel Mystery satisfying ‘60s and ‘70s blues’ appetites ... that along with a generous fish and chip supper. Hammond player Graham Greene begins the evening with the music of Booker T; you may remember Green Onions and Time is Tight ... OK, born in the ‘90s you may not. Graham Greene at the 1935 Hammond Model-A Organ, affectionately known as ‘Abigail’, brings the hits reeling back to life. Abigail from Chicago is in superb voice after 80 years of wailing. She has lived through World War II, the Indo-China conflict, Vietnam, man on the moon, depressions, recessions and several vocations, including a 30-year stint in the clergy. The mature lady now stands as a shining example of the ‘built to last’ philosophy of the previous century. She’ll no doubt be “sweet as” when man sets foot on Mars. The group features the searing blues vocals of Tom Wolfe with Robert M. Pirsig on drums, Neil Simon on bass and ... you wouldn’t read about it ... Harper Lee on guitar. Graham Greene’s Novel Mystery can be digested with copious fish and chips every Thursday evening over the summer months after cricket practice - at the Paradise Valley Hotel in Clematis from 8pm. So head on down to the crossroads at stumps.

Gerbes grabs cup By DENNIS FULLER THE last round of the club championship was held at Emerald Golf Club with the penetrometer reading being lightning fast with a touch of unpredictability. Martin Yeats (12) led the field onto the first tee but as the day evolved he had difficulty answering the challenge from Travis Gerbes (8), who stormed home for a total of 249 to salute the judges and win the cup. Mark Starick (11) hung tough to come in 4 behind Gerbes with Yeats 1 back again. When the handicap gong was calculated it showed that Yeats won that by being two strokes ahead of Dennis Fuller and Starick. B Grade saw Ben Balfour (21) lead the field into the last round and win in a canter on 260 with Ken Hill (18) 5 back on 265 followed by Leigh Morison (10) and Ian Scott who were a whole lot further back.
Balfour also picked up the handicap section on 195 with Scott in second place on 201. The ladies championship saw a clear win to Daisy Mackey with Brianna McCoy in second place and losing ground. The daily comp saw Balfour scoop the pool again with a nett score of 59. Mike Litchfield headed up the A graders with a very solid 68. Peter Clowes was nearest the pin on the 4th and the 12th, Dean Shannon the 7th, Gerbes the 13th and Leigh Morison played a beautiful shot to take away the pro pin cash on the 18th. Wednesday’s Ordinary and Floppy Golf (OFG) was a stableford event. Dennis Fuller (18) was the winner with 43 points from Geoff Whittaker (26) on 39 followed by Moss Fuller (22) and Sepp Krummenacher who both carded 38.
Moore shines for Stars YARRA Valley Ladies Cricket team played Pakenham Upper Toomuc last week, with the girls coming home with their second win for the season. The Stars won the toss and elected to field, P.U.T. got off to a shaky start giving a few chances in the field. However, the girls were unable to hold onto the catches as they had done the week before, seeing captain Downes and Caruana both making half centuries. But once they did make the breakthrough, they were able to get through the order fairly convincingly. An undefeated century by Donna Moore finishing on 101 not out was the highlight of the day. Donna opened the batting and carried her bat through to the end of the innings; her shot selection and experience showed in her approach as she built her innings. She was also excellent with the ball, taking 3/20 off 10. Best bowlers: Donna Moore 3/20 off 10, Marlee Wandin 3/42 off 8 Best batters: Donna Moore 101no, Caitlyn Parker 15, Marlee Wandin 12, Ebony Camilleri 6, Jessica Day 4 Next match against Frankson at Frankston.
Donna Moore finished the day on 101no, which was a highlight for the club. The Under 10s team took to the field this week with seven girls playing some for the first time and some as young as five. They played against Warburton and had their first win. It was a fantastic night and all the players had an amazing time.
Great signs for the future. Ladies of all ages, if you think cricket is a sport for you, then Yarra Valley Stars is the team to join. They also have an Under 10s Girls team. For further details, contact Leah Parker 0411 417 253.

Bowlers on top in three By IAN HARLEY THE conclusion to Round 2 saw some amazing results across the board with bowling sides coming out on top in three of the five games Play at Windemere was completed within 45 minutes as the Blues wrapped up the Mountain Gate tail, successfully defending 109. The Gators recommenced at 5/78 but Ferntree Gully did not loosen their grip with Ryan Handley (6/22) and Bryce Galvin (4/43) tightening the noose. Once the first innings was completed, the captains decided to call it a day. Johnson Park’s Steve Devenish took 2/50 from 42 overs as the Sharks denied Monbulk the six points with a five-run margin. Devenish’s tight bowling allowed Gottliebsen and Samaraweera to take bags of three wickets apiece. Jason Fraser was the only highlight with the bat for the Hawks. Knoxfield will be happy with their batsmen as Trentin Scholfield (73no) and Tom Boxell (73no) ensured they chased down the biggest total of the round 260 set by Knox Gardens. The Knights completed the task for the loss of only three wickets. Belgrave also cruised to victory, defeating Eildon Park for the loss of only two wickets. Johnathon Level (32no) and Dinusha Fernando (43no) got the job done after a strong bowling performance last week. Upwey completed the trifecta of sides successfully defending their scores bowling the Basin out 26 runs short. The Bears had Danny Rundle (55), Jayden Turcinovic (51) and Scott Vozzo (52) all get starts, although it was not enough as the two Jakes, Lynch ( 4/48) and Evans ( 3/41), took control for the Tigers.
In Decoite Shield, Auravale came from the clouds to chase down Upper Ferntree Gully’s 4/336 with Ryan O’Conner making 143. In the other games, Lysterfield defended 189 against Footballers, Rowville held on by 37 runs when play stopped, and St Johns defeated Knox City outright. Higher-flying Hawks assert their dominance
Talented junior cricketers Tam Noonan and Thomas Badgery both starred over the weekend.
SIX out of eight wins for the Hawks highlighted a successful weekend. Unfortunately, the 1st XI just went down again, meaning they have lost their first two games by a total of 10 runs to last year’s grand final teams. They will be looking to bounce back in next Saturday’s Twenty20. In the other grades, Craig Broekhof and Rick Lamers both had terrific all-round games to help the 2nd XI to a big win. Tim Fogarty and Evan Binding put on 26 runs for the 10th wicket to sneak past The Basin in the 3rds and the young 4th XI had their first win, with Dave Williams smacking 68. The Under 16s had a big win over The Basin with Tam Noonan making 51 not out to go along with his 48 in the 4ths. Thomas Badgery also had a great game making 41 not out and taking 4/6 (see picture of Tam and Thomas). The Under 14s had another close game, with Max Lamers whacking two big fours in the last over to defeat Lysterfield. No junior games next weekend due to Melbourne Cup and Under 11s and two new Under 10s teams all start after the break on 6 November, along with the first session of Milo in2Cricket. Next Saturday, 31 October, is an exciting day for the club. They are hosting a Twenty20 double-header versus Belgrave (2s start at 12.30pm followed by the 1s at 3.45pm), so everyone get along and support the teams and enjoy the day. The club is also hosting their business network lunch during the day, which will be followed by their first function.
