THE 2015 Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft has wrapped up after seven days of competitive action. This year’s combination of the Gold Cup Campdraft and Rodeo Australian Championships meant that the prestige for this year’s events was higher than ever – and the action did not disappoint. Sunday saw the fourth and final round of action and competitors
from across Australia clashed one last time to determine who would be going home with the trophies. In the end, Warwick campdrafter Ben Tapp claimed the Pryde’s Easifeed Warwick Gold Cup for the second time and ensured the trophy would be staying local. Tapp can now lay claim to being a double champion after also taking the cup in 2012. It wasn’t the only local win, with the winning horse also

Safe seat move Casey’s tips

By DANE LILLINGSTONE LOCAL man David Littleproud has won LNP preselection for the Federal seat of Maranoa. The Warwick businessman was one of the frontrunners in the race and beat out Maranoa councillor Cameron O’Neil, graziers Rick Gurnett and Alison Krieg, and banking manager Lachlan Douglas for the position. The move comes on the back
quired to be a strong advocate for the Maranoa electorate,” Mr Scott said. “I look forward to working with David in the lead-up to the 2016 election. “I would also like to offer my congratulations to the other preselection candidates - Lachlan Douglas, Cameron O’Neil, Alison Krieg and Rick Gurnett - who showed dedication and respect for the party’s preselection process. I wish them well in their future endeavours.”

of long-serving LNP Maranoa MP Bruce Scott’s retirement. The seat is regarded as one of the safest in Australia for the LNP. Results of the postal ballot were revealed on Friday with Mr Scott congratulating Mr Littleproud on the win. Mr Scott said he looked forward to working with his replacement. “I believe David has the knowledge, leadership and passion re-
THE Australian Anti Ice Campaign (AAIC) will be making its mark in Warwick over the next month. Members of the Christian Victory Centre have jumped on board to help spread the word in the community and get a foothold in the region. They have formed the first Warwick AAIC committee and plan to start making their presence known soon. Pastor Trevor Springate is right behind the campaign having experienced both sides of the drug war. “I was hooked on drugs,” he said. “I had my big conversion. I was in the lounge room myself one night drunk and stoned and woke up and I was clean. The next day I was healed. I was sick of the lifestyle.
It’s the lifestyle that gets you.” The committee currently has five members and is planning a barbecue next month as their first introduction into the community with high schools already notified about their plans. “We’re going to start off small. If just want people to come down and meet, it’s a place to meet each other,” he said. Mr Springate jumped on board because he said he could see what the drug was doing to the community. “We haven’t got as an epidemic here in Warwick, but when it hits, it hits. The money is huge. It’s not just teenagers who get addicted, it can be business workers, whatever, it doesn’t discriminate,” he said. “People need to be aware of what’s going on
Members of the Christian Victory Centre, David and Nathanial Leigh, Ann and Errol Rieck, Pastor Trevor Springate and Mick Billsbough. because they don’t see it. “These addicted people spend this money on drugs and it doesn’t go back to the community, it just goes back to the drugs, it affects the whole community. “Whatever we can do out there to make a better
community, we’ll do what we can.” The free barbecue is planned for Wednesday 4 November, at 3pm, at Leslie Park. The committee would like to invite any youths to come down for a chat and something to eat after school.
Tenterfield school injection PUBLIC schools in Tenterfield will benefit from a massive funding boost after an announcement by the New South Wales Government. The $113 million in funding has been described as being a record and a big increase from last year. As a result of the funding, in 2016 Tenterfield High School will receive $426,828, which is an increase of $72,303 on 2015 and Sir Henry Parkes Memorial School will receive $503,461, which is an increase of $93,612 on 2015. Lismore MP Thomas George said the needs-based funding will be delivered in a fair and transparent way. “In 2016, local public schools in the electorate will receive $11,558,713,” Mr George said. “This substantial ongoing investment in public education is fantastic news for our schools, and will further boost their efforts to deliver improved student results.” The 2016 funding was made possible through NSW’s commitment to the Gonski agreement with funding totalling $860 million and being distributed through the Resource Allocation Model. “This needs-based funding can be used in a variety of ways, including employing speech pathologists or specialist teachers to target learning areas,” Mr George said. Through the NSW Government’s Local Schools, Local Decisions reform, principals in NSW public schools will be given the power to decide how these funds will be spent in their districts.

Hannaford found guilty on death
Robbery on rise By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE annual Queensland Police Service’s Statistical Review has been released showing an overall 3.9 per cent increase in crime across the Darling Downs. The biggest single increase of crime in the district was a 25.4 per cent rise in robbery offences. Darling Downs District Officer Acting Superintendent Ben Marcus said break-ins tend to be opportunistic in nature. “The overall crime rate of offences against the person decreased during 2014/'15 with assaults decreasing by 3.6 per cent, robbery offences increasing by 25.4 per cent and other offences against the person including kidnapping and abduction offences increasing by 6.3 per cent,” Supt Marcus said. “A lot of break-ins are opportunistic and are preventable.”
However, Warwick Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon said any rises were not necessarily a bad thing with Warwick and the Southern Downs being grouped into a much larger district. “I don’t have an issue with our stats, our stats are actually fairly good,” Sgt Deacon said. “These stats include proactive police work. It means our staff are being proactive and finding offences like drugs.” Out of the local stats included in the robbery numbers, Warwick only had two robbery offences, and both were solved. He also said that media campaigns could sometimes play a part in raising crime rate statistics. He used domestic violence as an example and said that an increase did not necessarily equate to a ‘bad’ rise in crime. “The recent media interest in

domestic violence that encourages people to report domestic violence that’s a good thing,” Sgt Deacon said. “It means people in the public are willing to report offences they might otherwise not, which shows an increase. “There is a corresponding increase in breaches of domestic violence being reported and there is a corresponding increase in as-
THE man accused of killing Warwick woman Gail Lynch has been found guilty. The Toowoomba Supreme Court has heard the case for the last three weeks with the jury taking two days to reach the decision. Ms Lynch, 55, has not been seen since 2012 and her body has never been found. Ian Phillip Hannaford was always the prime suspect in the case as they had been involved in a relationship and subsequent break-up prior to Ms Lynch’s disappearance. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
saults. There has been an increase in breaches recorded. “People who are victims of domestic violence are willing to report breaches - we are happy with that. “The most common crime category that links to domestic violence is assault.” All percentages used in the statistics relate to the number of reported offences per 100,000 people.
In brief Night trespassers
A Leyburn man will soon face Warwick Magistrates’ Court on several serious charges allegedly committed over the past 15 years. The 55-year-old man is due to face 12 counts of torture, four counts of rape, 16 counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed, 10 counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, two counts of stalking, five counts of common assault, four counts of domestic violence and three counts of animal cruelty. He is currently in custody and is due to appear in court on 12 November. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Two youths were caught trespassing through yards on Saturday night in Stanthorpe. Stanthorpe police received a number of calls just after midnight about two people walking through yards on Mackenzie Street. Police subsequently apprehended the pair and charged the 18-year-old male and released a 19-year-old pending further investigations. The 18-year-old was charged with two counts of breaking and entering a dwelling, two counts of breaking into other premises and one count of possessing tainted property. He was taken straight into custody and po-
lice are now investigating his relation to other incidents in the Stanthorpe area.
Home invader flees On Friday 23 October there was a break-in at a house on Glen Road, Warwick. The raider is believed to have gained entry into the residence through a broken window about 7pm before proceeding to the main living area. One of the occupants in the house was in the living area and the raider fled after seeing them. Police said he was wearing all black with something covering his face. Nothing was reported as stolen.

Champion rides home Rodeo police Casey’s tips
By DANE LILLINGSTONE
HE may not have taken out the big prize but Warwick local Michael Maher can hold his head high after a tough Warwick Rodeo. The 2014 Australian Professional Rodeo Association’s saddle bronc champion couldn’t repeat last year’s heroics but that didn’t stop him from being a hometown favourite. Coming in to the rodeo as the saddle bronc favourite along with Warwick’s Mark Collins, Michael has come a long way since high school. “I’ve been riding broncs for probably 10 years now,” he said. “I was one of the first members of the high school rodeo program in Warwick. It was actually part of our high school curriculum. It was our physical education. Instead of playing football we’d come down and ride steers.” Michael said he knew almost instantly it was something he wanted to pursue.
Michael in action over the weekend. “I liked it. I knew I could go places with it,” he said. “I’ve been riding calves and steers since I was five or six. I got on my first saddle bronc when I was 16.
PIctures: TERRY WEST “It took me probably two years to be able to get going and get on the road and compete competitively with everyone else.” Since then Michael has carved himself a nice career with a highpoint com-
ing after winning in both Warwick and Mt Isa last year. “They are probably the two biggest rodeo events in Australia,” he said. He responded instantly when asked what the hardest part of his job was. “Falling off,” he said. “Hitting the ground is probably the hardest thing. With saddle bronc riding it’s a little bit different. A lot more technical stuff goes on. With bull riding it’s kind of like hold and go with the bull.” From a broken arm to stitches in the head, Michael said during the event he was happy to be in front of a home crowd. “It’s good to be home, it’s good to have family and friends behind you,” he said. “I definitely get nervous. “At the end of the day, the best of the best are here.” With his first performance in Warwick coming in 2005, there is no doubt he will be back doing it all again next year.
Local girl wins poly buck jump By DANE LILLINGSTONE LOCAL Warwick woman Sharni Collins added to the rodeo trophy cabinet of the Southern Downs, taking out her event in only her second attempt. The ladies poly buck jump is not a common event around Australia, but it was something that Sharni always wanted to try. “Dad always kept saying no,” she said. After continuously pushing it back, and having her son, she made her debut in last year’s Warwick Rodeo. “I thought what the hell and gave it
a crack last year, and decided to do it again this year,” she said. Claiming a second place in her debut last year, Sharni didn’t have too many doubts about returning this year. She walked away with the top prize this year, and it was an impressive result given she doesn’t really get to practice. “I ride horses usually, but don’t really practice for it,” she said. “I was hoping for a win and I was just hoping to stay on.” Her win did come at a cost though with an awkward fall, meaning she
broke the bones between her thumb and wrist in seven different places. “Last year the pickup men got me and I didn’t even fall. This year, I happened to keep going and ended up coming off and landed the wrong way,” she said. “But they were clean breaks.” Sharni said she’d see if she’d be back next year, but added it wouldn’t be the injury that would scare her away. She also wanted to thank fellow Warwick local and cousin Mark Collins for getting her poly saddle just right for the event.

operation By DANE LILLINGSTONE WARWICK police conducted a weekend long operation during the rodeo netting several offenders, although no serious crimes were reported. Operation Enola commenced on Friday and wrapped on Sunday at the completion of the rodeo. Although there were several offences recorded, it was noted that crowds were generally well behaved over the weekend. In total five people were charged with public nuisance, one for public urination, two for obstructing police, 13 for drug-related offences, 10 traffic-related offences and there were 114 tickets issued for a variety of offences. The offences were committed across a large area with the police operation including the showgrounds, CBD and the greater Warwick area. Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon noted the crowds were generally well behaved. “The Rodeo crowd were very well behaved. There were only two public nuisance offences committed at the showgrounds over the three days,” he said. There were a total of 567 random breath tests conducted on the roads during the operation with no-one being charged. However there were 14 people caught for drug-driving. Sen Sgt Deacon said he was pleased that none were caught drinkdriving. “That would indicate to me that the message may be getting through – to not risk it,” he said.

Run fund-raiser On behalf of the Lions Club of Warwick, I would like to thank the Warwick community which supported us in the recently run fund raising of the Grocery Grab (vouchers) $400 valued grocery in aid of Lions Cord Blood Foundation, an Australia-wide Lions project. This fundraiser was in cooperation with the participant Store of Foodworks Westside Warwick whose generosity donated $200 worth of goods and the Warwick Lions Club matched it with another $200. The three weeks fundraising ended with the draw of the ticket by Lions treasurer Jeff Ferguson and Foodworks assistant manager Annett Davies. The winner was Alan Ryan, ticket No. 998. Congratulations Alan. Funds raised were a little over $1500 after expenses. The Lions Club decided to donate $1000 to the Cord Blood Foundation while $500 will be donated to a local community in need, which is
yet to be nominated. I take the opportunity to thank the Foodworks Westside proprietor and manager Chris Pettiford for the kind donation. The Warwick community is always there to support us and volunteers at Warwick Lions who worked hard to get this project going. Concetto Lo Giudice, Lions Club of Warwick.
Rates highly Thank you for Lots More Rates (Southern Free Times, 22 October). It is sobering indeed to read the Qld Palaszcuk Government now intends to slug urban and rural property owners with yet another state tax; an additional Emergency Management Levy imposed on each individual portion of the property they own. This unjust matter should have been thrashed out at the recent council and mayors’ meeting in Toowoomba.
Our council needs to show a bit of backbone for a change and truly represent us, their ratepayers. Clearly with 80 per cent of the state in severe drought, the government demands are equivalent to getting blood out of a stone. Such an imposition displays total ignorance and is nothing short of an utter disgrace. A. Daly, Warwick.
You’ll pay To Mayor Blundell and SDRC councillors, with special notes to the mighty mayor. I read with amazement that you are talking rate rises for next year. Don’t get excited as I doubt whether you will have your cushy job after the next election as well as many of your councillors. As rate payers we have had enough of your wasteful spending of rate payers’ money. It seems to me that the more handouts you get
from the State Government the more you want to waste on vehicles and flash cars. Don’t you think rate payers can see what you are up to? I think your scrap book will be nearly full of coloured pictures I have seen in the papers prior to the rodeo. I think the rate payers know who you are and the rest who have had their photos splashed around, I can assure you that by the people I have spoken to it has done very little to getting you votes. Also, by the way, why have we got machinery hidden down back streets not used for up to four days? I was told by a council worker that this happens because we do not have enough operators. So wouldn’t it be good to get rid of your well paid high flyers with all the lurks and perks and the new shiny vehicle and employ some local people and teach them how to operate the machinery so this does not happen again and the rate payer gets value for money. W. Long, Karara.

LOCALLY owned car dealership Cassels Automotive will be officially welcoming Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge to the family next month. With the dealership having been connected to the region for over 70 years, the new showroom will open up more opportunities for local employment and investment. Owner David Cassels, who took over the dealership when he bought it in 2008, said the new showroom was another feather in the dealership's bow. “We’re very encouraged with the economy in Warwick and we’re investing money into the place and creating a few more jobs,” he said. “We’ll have an official opening in November, so people can come for a drive day and have a test drive.”
Owner David Cassels and Customer Service Manager Abraham Basson in front of the new showroom. The new showroom is now open, giving Warwick buyers an opportunity to purchase the new premium
car brands locally. “It’s a premium brand and there are a lot of current owners in the
area, so we’ll service all those cars now,” Mr Cassels said. Cassels Automotive employs 28 local staff with an emphasis on customer service, and although the market has been up and down, Mr Cassels said things were picking up. “The market isn’t too bad, it’s been a bit challenging the last few months, but it’s certainly picking up now,” he said. “Whatever car you want, we’ve got something here.” The dealership offers new and used cars as well as servicing with facilities such as a kids room, cafe and a great view overlooking Warwick. There is expected to be an announcement soon on when the official opening of the new showroom will be.
Three generations in family business CHRIS O’Leary has been involved in Warwick in some way his whole life having grown up here and now running his own business. He now owns and runs Warwick Livestock Equipment. Most of the work is done by himself with the occasional help of his son. It’s a business that spans three generations as he took over the business from his father this year after his retirement. Originally CG Welding, Chris said, Warwick Livestock Equipment could do just about anything. “We specialise in stock handling equipment, cattle yards, loading ramps, crushers, horse crushers, horse panels, sheep yard gear all the way to a house yard gate to a shed,”
he said. Being a qualified boiler maker by trade, Chris said he was bit of an all-rounder. “We can do anything,” he said. “I’ve been in the rural game for a very long time and for different rural companies across Queensland.” Chris said that although business wasn’t booming at the moment, things were looking up. “It’s going pretty good at the moment with cattle prices at the moment locally,” he said. Having been up and down Queensland for work and travel, Chris said Warwick was the place he wanted to call home.
Chris O’Leary has continued the business of his father.

Biggest one yet THE annual Rodeo Country Craft markets were held on Saturday as part of a massive weekend of events in Warwick. The markets are a rodeo tradition and usually referred to as the biggest of the year with over 170 stalls, jumping castles, various food stalls and activities for the kids. Market co-ordinator Sue Creed said it continued to get bigger. “It was our biggest rodeo market yet,” she said. “All the market holders and the people in attendance were very impressed. I’ve had no complaints.” The markets have been running for over 30 years. Warwick Potters County have supported the event, and Sue said they were appreciative of the community support. “We’re very grateful for the support from Warwick and the community,” she said. “Probably, half the stalls were marketeers from the Southern Downs.” Sue said the markets would definitely be returning next year.
Enjoying the markets on Saturday was Kelly Ellis with Joshua Stevens, Tahlia and Britteny Lawler. Pictures: TERRY WEST 1202704-ACM42-15

What’s On Artwork brings The bard at his funniest back memories
Too Dull. These days Ms Warner lives on a sheep and cattle property and has pursued her lifelong interest in art through distance education. “My work attempts to communicate how isolation and distance can bring mixed blessings,” Ms Warner said. “I have chosen broken and rusted tools as my visual vocabulary because they are sym-
bolic of digging up the past. The works, I hope, offer insight about family relationships and how hopes, dreams and sometimes despair are etched into details of daily routine.” Gallery Director Karina Devine is certain that visitors to the exhibition will relate to the objects and images in the exhibition. “Peta’s exhibition contains lots of surprises and challenges for the viewer,” Ms Devine said. “Some of the works are appealing because of their drama and scale. Others, that incorporate sheepskin, beeswax and recycled timber from her father’s bee boxes, are wonderfully innovative.” 'The Keeper: Memories of a Rural Life' was curated by Dr Sally Butler and Kerry Gillett from the University of Queensland. It will open in Thursday 29 October and continues until Sunday 6 December. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and on weekends 10am to 1pm.

This is the one where Ferdinand, the King of Navarre, declares that no woman should come within a mile of the court, leading to three years of celibacy, study and fasting. The arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies make it difficult (impossible?) for the men to keep their vows. They decide to abandon their oaths and woo the ladies but events
don’t go smoothly. Tickets are available at Maddie’s Gift gallery. A coach is also available with pick-up from outside the wine bar at 6pm or Glen Aplin at 6.15pm. This is $10 per person return paid when tickets are purchased. Visit 'Stanthorpe Little Theatre’ on Facebook or contact Bungawarra Winery (181 Bents Road, Ballandean) on 07 4684 1128.

WARWICK Art Gallery’s latest exhibition showcases the lyrical figurative artworks of Peta Warner, from Eulo near Cunnamulla in Western Queensland. The inspiration for 'The Keeper: Memories of a Rural Life' developed from the discovery of old implements stored in boxes for many years by the artist's father. These objects were the catalyst for Ms Warner’s exploration of the history and sentiment embedded in items and materials from her family’s life on the land. The eloquent technique of graphite on traditional gesso and assemblage characterise rural experience as a labour of love, and translates familiar worn and weathered surfaces into a register of a way of life that is largely past. Ms Warner’s intimate attention to detail traces the texture and tensions of her family’s working life in migratory beekeeping and sheep farming, and provides a visual record of Australia’s social history.
EACH year since 2005 the Stanthorpe Little Theatre Group has staged a Shakespearian play in the magical outdoor setting of Bungawarra Winery amid gum trees and backlit granite boulders. This year, it’s the turn of the bard’s comedy of errors -“Love’s Labour’s Lost" to be held Friday to Sunday, 6, 7 and 8 November from 7pm.

Multi-front rivalry looms The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
HAS the rivalry with our Kiwi cousins across “the Ditch” ever run deeper? The 2015 Netball Constellation Cup remains up for grabs, the All Blacks and Wallabies go head to head in the Rugby World Cup, the Kiwi invaders line-up in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup and the Australian cricketers prepare to do battle with the Black Caps in the first Test at the Gabba. Whew. The Australian Diamonds suffered their first defeat in the Constellation Cup, going down 50-47 last weekend against their Kiwi arch-rivals. The Silver Ferns stunned the Diamonds clawing back a nine-goal deficit in the third quarter. The Diamonds levelled the match in the dying minutes but the Silver Ferns dug deep scoring four of the last five goals and their first Constellation Cup win since September 2013, forcing the Diamonds to a decider in Perth next weekend. It was a memorable 100th Test milestone for New Zealand captain Casey Kopua and ended Australia’s run of 10 consecutive wins against their Trans-Tasman rivals. The Rugby World Cup will be decided half a world away at Twickenham next weekend. All Blacks and Wallabies fans finally have the World Cup decider they have been craving, with the All Blacks and Wallabies meeting in the final for the first time. The Kiwis overcame a determined Springboks and the Australians showed plenty of grit to defeat the improving Pumas in the semis. It has been a long haul for players and fans. As a spectator, the first pool games feel like they were an age away; one can only hazard a guess at what the battered and bruised players are feeling. There is no doubt All Black would start a very short priced favourite at Flemington next Tuesday given the winning form line over Wallaby. It would show only one Wallaby win in 12 starts but dig a little deeper and perhaps Wallaby is on the up as they say. The pair met twice in the space of seven days in August and the one game apiece score line showed Michael Cheika had sprinkled some magic on Wallaby since taking over the reins a little over a year ago. On Sunday at Twickenham fans will be hoping a new chapter is written in Wallaby folklore. There is one certainty - plenty of bleary eyes after another 2.00am kick off. There will be little time for fans to digest that result moving on to the form guide for the Cup on Tuesday. No doubt there will be plenty of Kiwis staking their claim against a handful of true blue Aussie starters and a host of International marauders. I am reserving judgement until after this weekend’s Derby meeting but recent form lines show we should really be paying attention to the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate results. With that in mind I have a leaning towards Criterion, Who Shot the Barman, Mongolian Khan and market mover Almoonqith who won the Geelong Cup. Sentimental favourite Red Cadeaux must be included in any trifecta or first four. (Still searching for the Aussie in that lot). As the champagne bubbles subside, the cricketers and yours truly will be preparing for the first ball of the Gabba Test on Thursday. It will be a true Test of character for a new look Aussie side who face a Kiwi outfit who believe it is their time to turn the tables on the Aussies. Aussie selectors have plenty to think about as they do their form lines with several players putting their hand up in recent weeks. Steve Smith is set to lead an unfamiliar outfit onto the Gabba pitch. What a great time to be an Aussie or perhaps even a Kiwi - Trans Tasman rivalry is
Winners of the 2015 Apple Blossom Cup The Summit Bowls club team of Len Covill's, Rod Newlands, Paul Zamprogno and Alex Mattiazzi. alive and well and I doubt we will see better examples of our love hate relationship with those pesky Kiwis cousins. Like all Aussies, I’m rooting for the Constellation Cup to stay with the Diamonds, the Wallabies to give William Webb Ellis a first class seat on the plane home to Australia; The Melbourne Cup to stay at home for a change and Australia to have success in the Chappell Hadlee Test Series - not much of an ask really. Come on Aussie; Come on. - Casey DONALD RECEIVES RECONIGTION THERE is no disputing that Tom Donald hits the target as a committed clubman at the Inglewood Sporting Shooting Club. He has been and continues to be one of the driving forces behind the success of the very proactive club. Last weekend, in recognition of his hard work and commitment, Donald was made the inaugural Life Member of the SSAA (Inglewood Branch). Paul Drier presented Donald with a plaque to mark the occasion at the monthly meeting. At the same meeting the club also committed to holding a five stand clay target competition next year. Of course, there was also plenty of action on the range itself last weekend. Action Pistols are proving a popular and fun shoot and the competition was keenly contested. The overall winner was Peter Jones who shot well to relegate Ross Jackson and Iain Bowen to the minor placings. This weekend the competition will be a mix of clays and pistol and visitors are very welcome. SADDLE UP AT WEBSTER’S IF you can’t be trackside at the 2015 Melbourne Cup and have yet to decide on how or where to celebrate, then book a table at the Rotary Young Ambassador’s Melbourne Cup Luncheon at Webster’s at the Central Hotel Stanthorpe. Gates open at 11.30am and full Tab Facilities available. A big day is planned with form lines on the big race to be provided by visiting compere and former Courier Mail sporting scribe Bernie Pramberg. You could be the lucky winner of a holiday pack-

All patrons will receive a free Mystery Bet with their ticket and there will be sweeps and much much more in the starting stalls. Nomination fees (Tickets) are $45 and are available from Samantha Blaxland, Stanthorpe Print Copy or call 0438 813 942. Book now you wouldn’t want to miss the start in this event. BOXING PROVES POPULAR THE return of boxing to the Stanthorpe Civic centre last Saturday night proved popular with locals and visitors as over 250 people crowded in to the venue to watch all the action. A card of 23 fights featured divisions from 22kg through to the big boys - 91kgs. Ty Miller boxed aggressively against Dylan Lane of Kingaroy for a draw in the 32kg division. In the same weight class, Dean Dunbar lost on points to talented youngster Logan Slis of Grafton. At 42kg Dylan fought hard, losing on split points to Braydon Marou of Rockhampton and Kaine Doorley lost narrowly to Dylan Lane of Kingaroy. In the 55kg division, local Stanthorpe boxer Mason Picknell defeated Grafton visitor Logan Slis in a lively bout. Mason was named best up and coming fighter and received a set of boxing gloves donated by Smithy’s Gym of Toowoomba and presented by Critter Brackin. In the main junior bout, Marco Kent had a late change of opponent fighting Billy Evans of Rockhampton. In an action-packed three round bout, the judges were unable to split the pair and the fight was declared a draw. At 85kg Jamie Dunbar proved his toughness when he went the distance with the big hitting Aiden Malloy of Coffs Harbour. Dunbar showed plenty of heart in this crowd pleaser, but lost on points. The main event on the card was the clash between Adam Martin and the experienced and talented North Coast Superheavyweight champion
Tyler White of Woodburn NSW. In an excellent display of boxing, both fighters landed heavy shots. Martin kept his opponent backing up and counterpunching. At the end of the three rounds, the bout was declared a draw in what was the fight of the night. The evening was a great success for the Stanthorpe boxing club and organisers wish to thank all of their sponsors, in particular M & D Autos, Glen Aplin Autos and the Stanthorpe Motorcycle Workshop for their support. Thanks to the Stanthorpe community for their support; Dr James Telfer for kindly donating his time and also Smithy’s Gym and the Brackin family for donating gloves and shirts to the boys. On Saturday, the Stanthorpe boys will compete in bouts at Kirra Beach. In one of the feature bouts on that program, Marco Kent will take on Connor Stamm of Bendigo Victoria. EAGLE LANDS AT ‘GARRA A rare eagle landed at the ‘Garra golf course on Saturday during play for the Paul Hampstead Memorials Trophy. Simon Blair nailed an eagle on the par four eight and while it got him neither a win nor even a pin shot, it was definitely an almost unseen species. Honours on the day went the way of Mick Hurtz denying Simon Blair a win. Scott Williams also played a good round to finish in third spot. Pin shots went to Damien Moore at three; Hurtz on nine and Steven Hampstead got lucky stealing the Approach Shot. Peter Williams was lucky enough to win the jackpot hole at 11. Organisers at the club wish to thank the Hampstead family and all competitors who helped make it another great day at the “Garra. This weekend, the club has scheduled a single stableford competition. CARNIVAL BLOOMS AGAIN VOLATILE weather conditions marked both days of the popular annual Apple Blossom Carnival at the Summit Bowls club, but the bowlers who came in numbers to do battle for the prizemoney and enjoy had a bloomin’ good time. Intermittent storms rolled in late on Saturday and about 1.30pm on Sunday. In all only half of one game was disrupted due to a heavy rainstorm. It was the Len Covill’s Summit team including Rod Newlands, Paul Zamprogno and Alex Mattiazzi that was able to put their local knowledge to good use and grab the top prize and the 2015 Cup. Congratulations to the whole team. They played consistent bowls throughout the carnival, scoring aggregate wins over the two days. The runnersup also had a local flavour, the Stanthorpe team of Frank Taylor, Brian Brown, Cliff Jones and Rob Alcock. Saturday winners: Richard Middleton’s Texas team - go Texas. Runners-up: Quinton Stanley’s Summit team. Sunday winners: Terry Banditt’s Tannymorel team; runners-up: John Cooke’s Stanthorpe team. Not everyone can be on a winning team and for the rest of the players, it was an enjoyable carnival with plenty of witty banter, multi draw raffle wins ; the odd liquid refreshments; a tasty lunch and some very tidy and some not so tidy shots. Teams from Beenleigh, Glen Innes, Urbenville and Stockton joined teams from our region to make this another spectacular success and the club and players look forward to Apple Blossom 2016. Mossy and his crew turned the greens out in spectacular fashion. The greens drew plenty of positive comments from the many visiting players. Despite some late minute withdrawals and a few hiccups, the club with the help of members was able to deliver an even number of teams for both days. A shout out to Ray Rankin from the members of the club who hope you are well keep the bowls rolling Ray. Thanks to a raft of fantastic sponsors including Elders; Wilmot’s House Removals; I&L Rizzato and Sons; M and D Auto One; MJ Cleaners; Maddie’s Gift Gallery; Aqua Rural; Qld Farmers Warehouse; Pink Poppies; Bendigo Bank Community Bank; Granite Belt Fruit Freighters; Paul Zamprogno and Chris’s Carpets Blinds and Tiles. Without your support and the efforts of a dedicated band of volunteers from the club the carnival would not be possible.

was good enough to win the event. Richard Reardon restored local pride by taking out the nett event. All local players took out the grade events, Dylan Barraclough was successful in the ’A’ grade. Trevor Ludlow won the ’B’ grade and Tom Fittock took out ’C’ grade. Best nett scores went to Stephen Kay, Marshall Grundon from City GC and Rod Werner. The ladies stableford winner was Cara Frires from City Golf Club with a score of 39 points. Divisional winners were Ann McCleery from Maryborough, Mandy Benussi and Nikki Rossow. Runners-up in each division were all local players, Hannah Reeves, Christine Welstead and Di Kirby. The club committee were thrilled with the support from local players and the many visitors now make this a regular event and have done for many years. The course was well presented and many good comments were passed onto Stanthorpe’s hard working green keeper, Bill. The work put in to the day was much appreciated and members who took part in the preparation and operation of the day should be very pleased. Sponsorship of the day was also greatly appreciated. Maddie’s Gift Gallery has been a long time sponsor, not only of the Open but of golf throughout the year. City Golf Club in Toowoomba have also sponsored the Open for a number of years, as they do for other smaller clubs in the area and always bring a bus load of participating players. With the support of members, players and sponsors, the day was very successful and enjoyable. BUSY WEEK FOR MALLET SPORTS IT WILL be a busy week for gateball enthusiasts this week. The Stanthorpe Gateballers will host the Australian Gateball Union on Friday to assist with the planning of the Gateball triples event on
21/22 November. In triples there are three rather than five members to a team. The captain plays one ball and plans the tactics while the remaining two members play two balls each. Club games close again this week, with each team winning a game. There was plenty of time spent practising different and alternate strokes. In association croquet games, Grace Howard and Andres Denkewitz scored 18 hoops, but it was not enough to hold out Heather and Pat Schnoor who made it to 24. Andrea following instructions attempted a long shot which ended up putting the opponent through the hoop. Margaret Dickenson scored 24 in her game against Joy Newman and Effie Russell 22. Hoop runners played two games of triples. Shirley Evans, Val Fancourt and Elaine Brown had a narrow with 13 against Billy Golding, Judy Lock and Teresa Pyne 12. All six players played well, however with Shirley Evans top scoring. Because of the weather conditions the second game was limited to a first to seven score. Winners were Billy Golding, Judy Lock and Teresa Pyne. ON THE GREEN IN WARWICK DRY course, lots of run, lots of high stableford scores. The Red Roster Rumble is no different. Mark Coote country member living in Townsville managed half a dozen games and at least one win. He carded 24 points in last Friday’s nine hole event. It was a slim win by one point from Brian Sullivan on a countback from Mark Coote. Other run downs went to Brett Donovan 22, Neville Heard 21 and Gordon McKeen 21. Nearest to the pin winners receive a voucher to Red Rooster for a hot chicken. They were Gordon McKeen, Mark Coote, and Paul Coote. Saturday’s single stroke event was sponsored by the golf club. Regular competition play for Neil Moore is clearly im-
proving his game. He scored a nett 61 to win. Runner-up was Greg Sellick on 65 nett after a count back from Ross Kannar. Run down balls went to Shaun Campbell, Graham Clark and Peter Collett (67), Phil Economidis, Jesse Harris, and Eddie Kemp (68). Nearest to the pins went to Shaun Campbell, Dion Phillips, and Graham Clark. Brendon Jones collected at 11, 13, and 16. The mixed foursomes championships were held on Sunday with 40 players (20 teams) competing. The best gross winner getting the honour board spot. With a lead of 13 shots, the winners were Sam and Geoff Hinze, followed by Nathan Jones and Christine Hankinson Jones. Nett winners were Dion Phillips and Donna Keogh, followed by Kerrin Delaney and Judy Stiff. Run down balls were given to Marge and Ken Burley, Liz and Eamon Cockram, Melanie and Sam McLennan, and Mick and Annice Payne. Pins went to Sam McLennan Judy Lester, Geoff Hinze, Anna Cox and Dion Phillips. This Saturday is Big W Day with a shotgun start at 7am and then again at noon. It’s a Four Ball Ambrose competition, and there are still some spots available, particularly for the 7am tee off. On Sunday, the club is hosting the Darling Downs junior classic which will attract around 80 players from around the region. The pro shop will be running a Ping demo/club fit day on Thursday 19 November from 11am - 3pm. Bookings are essential. VALLEYS EXPEREINCE TO THE FORE UNDER the threat of rain, Valleys and Souths did battle last weekend on the CF White Turf. Valleys won the toss and took first use of the wicket. It proved to be a handy toss to win and Valleys were off to a flyer. Valley’s put pressure on the young Souths side and stepped up the pace and when the game was interrupted by rain just two balls short of the innings, Valleys had piled on 4/288. John Fletcher top scored with 88 not out. Fletcher found the boundary on no less than 10 occasions and added a six for good measure. Dave Gavin showed his strength with the bat with a slashing 48 which included seven boundaries and another big six. Phil Irvine also got among the boundaries his 47 included nine fours. Souths were faced with an uphill battle. When the conditions improved, they were facing a revised total of 260 runs from 32 overs. South’s captain Ben Staley and fellow opener Danny Folkers ensured Souths would be competitive with an opening stand of 82. Souths lost Folkers and Jordan Lanza in quick succession and found themselves chasing 115 runs at better than 10 an over. When Staley had his wickets rattled by the opposing captain Damian Anderson for 78, Souths were in trouble. Their young and inexperienced line-up had no answers against the more experienced attack and finished on 198 well short of the Valleys target. It was a solid win for Valleys who look to have a good side this season. After being one of the competition heavyweights for a decade or more, Souths are in a rebuilding faze and their young players can be proud of their efforts last Saturday. The game between RSL and Tenterfield was washed out and will be rescheduled. This weekend Twenty/20 games will be played with Rep cricket returning on Sunday. SHARED SPOILS HONOURS were shared between locals and visitors last weekend when as a large contingent of golfers Wallangarra players Tony Murphy teamed and A. Thompson, teamed up to win Saturday’s 4BBB stableford with a score of 50 points. Both players contributed evenly played very consistent golf, scoring well on each hole. In second place was another visiting team. Rob Perrin and Stephen Dengate from the Wantima Golf Club scored 48 points to claim second spot. Local players missed out on the top prizes for Saturday, but did feature in the minor prizes in pin shots and run downs. Sunday’s events, a single stroke for members and a stableford for the ladies, saw a field of 109 players out on the course. The Open Stroke event went to another Wantima Club visitor, Alex Stephen. His score of 74
