CRANBOURNE’S Australian Garden has been lauded on the global stage, winning the International Garden Tourism Network’s Garden Tourism Garden of the Year award for 2016. After taking out the award at a conference in South Korea, director and chief executive of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Professor Tim Entwisle said he was delighted to receive yet another international award. “The Australian Garden provides a stunning display of Australian plants in an evocative setting at our Cranbourne Gardens,” Prof Entwisle said. eyes and was oblivious to his dangerous driving, Sen Const Hawkins said. Valotto told police, at the time, he refused a drug test because he feared he still had “weed” in his system. The accused, who represented himself, told the court he had an opoid addiction in his twenties and been on a suboxone treatment program in his thirties. He had since replaced suboxone with antidepressants, and believed a combination of the medication with

cannabis use had caused side-effects during the incident. He had since “stayed straight” and was seeing a psychologist. During the incident, Valotto ruined his car by scraping it on concrete, he told the court. “I haven’t driven it since I realised it was dangerous.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said it was a “wonder” Valotto had driven so far without killing himself and others. “I know,” Valotto replied. “I drove
from the city to Cranbourne like that.” Mr Vandersteen said Valotto appeared a bright, intelligent person dealt a “poor hand in life early on” and who had not offended in the past five years. “It’s very rare we see someone of your age before the court.” Valotto was convicted, disqualified from driving for two years and fined $750. He was also placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond on the condition he continued his psychological treatment.

AN APPARENT drug-affected driver who repeatedly veered between lanes and grass verges in peak-time freeway traffic while slapping himself in the face to stay awake has conceded to a court he was lucky to survive. Robert Valotto, 39, pleaded guilty to careless driving and refusing a policeadministered drug test at a Dandenong Magistrates’ hearing on 2 November. A witness had observed Valotto driving erratically outbound on
Monash Freeway near Notting Hill about 4.45pm on 9 July. As he approached the South Gippsland Freeway exit, Valotto was seen slapping himself in the face “to wake himself up”, police prosecutor Senior Constable Kimberley Hawkins told the court. Police intercepted Valotto’s car at William Street, Cranbourne. They noted a seemingly “intoxicated or drug affected” Valotto was unsteady on his feet, had bloodshot

Ice man’s hard cell By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A BERWICK ice user whose persistent family violence included inciting his ex-girlfriend to throw herself in front of a train has been refused appeal bail. Jayden Calleya, 19, had applied for bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 November on the basis that his ice habit was under control after 12 days in juvenile custody. Calleya was appealing a four month youth-detention sentence handed down in October at the same court. He had been found guilty of assaulting, threatening to kill and breaching intervention orders protecting the girlfriend. He had also been charged with twice inciting her to suicide, once by urging her to jump in front of a train.
believe his behaviour has changed and he will be a better person”. Calleya had promised not to touch ice again, the father said. “He doesn’t want to be where he is (at the moment). “I’ll plan to trust him. He’s learnt from his mistake and he’ll be fine.” The stepfather told the court he didn’t think Calleya’s younger girlfriend was “any good” for his son and “probably” caused a lot of his son’s problems. Calleya’s defence lawyer said that ice was the cause of Calleya’s offending over a “relatively short time”. The lawyer said it was “telling” that Calleya had pledged he won’t be in contact with the girlfriend, and had not been in contact since being in custody. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said
In response, the victim jumped off a railway station platform on the tracks, but survived, the court heard. The applicant had breached intervention orders against his girlfriend while on corrections orders in August and September, the court was told. Calleya’s stepfather, who was called as a witness, said he had kicked out the accused from their Berwick family home during the offending. “He started stealing my stuff and I didn’t want to put up with that,” he told the court. Even after Calleya was kicked out, he still broke in and stole property from the family home, the stepfather said. The stepfather pledged to the court he was prepared to take Calleya back home for bail because “I
the stepfather’s evidence was “not enough” to secure appeal bail. Mr Vandersteen noted Calleya had “persistently” breached family violence orders against his girlfriend even while on community based orders. He said he wouldn’t bail Calleya to a home where the stepfather blamed the girlfriend rather than Calleya for his “problems”. There were no drug and alcohol services organised for Calleya’s release, Mr Vandersteen said. “There’s less in place than when I placed him on a (community-based supervision) order in September. “He’s re-offended too, so that’s why he’s spent the time in custody.” Calleya’s appeal is at the County Court on 9 December.
Around the world in a day FEASTING on food from around the world as part of International Children’s Week, the three-year-olds at Rangebank Pre-school learnt a one big lesson about the globe- that it’s round. Barbara Ryan-Perkins from the preschool said the children had a good look at
the globe on Monday 26 October. “They learnt that they live on planet earth and helped me identify flags from different countries,” Ms Ryan-Perkins said. Nine children dressed up in costumes inspired by India, Samoa, Ireland, France
and Hawaii and indulged in fried rice, Spanish donuts and apple strudel. “They made flags and international dolls out of cardboard as well,” she said. The annual event runs throughout the week at the Cranbourne pre-school.
Home invasions By LACHLAN MOORHEAD POLICE are being called out daily to home invasions in Casey despite months of warnings. Detective Senior Sergeant Rodney Maroney, from Casey CIU, told Star News there were one to two reports a day of aggravated burglaries occurring all over the municipality. The most recent saw a victim come face to face with an intruder inside his Cranbourne home this week. The victim was woken up in the early hours of Monday 2 November when he heard a sound inside his Harry Street house. When he got up to investigate he was confronted by an unknown man who then fled, taking the victim’s iPad, house keys and car keys. The intruder is described as Caucasian, aged in his mid-twenties, about 185cm tall, and was wearing a dark beanie, a shirt, an orange highvisibility vest, dark pants and boots. “It’s typical of your aggravated burglary lately,” Det Sen Sgt Maroney said. “We’re still getting one to two a day where people are breaking into houses through an unlocked garage.” There has been a concerning spate of homes burglaries in Casey this year, in which thieves enter houses, often through unlocked doors while people are asleep, steal keys and use them to make off with the occupant’s car. “It’s a simple thing of making sure the garage door is locked, locking any internal doors, and making sure that the keys aren’t anywhere where they can be found easily,” Det Sen Sgt Maroney said. In August Star News spoke to David Linton, of Berwick, whose 18-year-old daughter, Emma, had her Holden Commodore stolen when thieves entered his house through an unlocked door and stole the car. On 29 July, thieves broke into a Cranbourne North home in Paratea Lane in the middle of the day and took car keys which they used to steal a Kia Sportage. The car was found burnt-out in parkland in Narre Warren two days later. Overnight on 31 July, a 2015 Range Rover Evoque and a 2008 Holden Astra were stolen from a Furness Court property in Berwick, after thieves also broke in and stole the keys.

Islam calls for calm on anthem By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) has called for calm in the wake of the National Anthem debate involving a Cranbourne primary school. The ICV released an official statement on Monday in which ICV secretary Kuranda Seyit said the group did not want the incident to “divide Australians”. “The national anthem is important to all Australians, including Muslims,” Mr Seyit said. The ICV was responding to Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School’s decision to allow Islamic students to leave a Year 2-6 assembly to avoid singing the Australian National Anthem, citing Muharram - a religious month of mourning for Shi’a Muslims. Over the last week, the issue has been covered on several television networks, on 3AW and ABC radio, drawn comment from opinion writers and national columnists, and even a response from Senator Jacqui Lambie and Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison.
It was also debated on the ABC’s Q and A program, and Channel Nine’s new equivalent, The Verdict. Star News broke the story last month after Lorraine McCurdy, whose grandchildren go to the school, attended the school’s assembly and was concerned by the staff’s decision to give Muslim students the option to not sing the national anthem. She said about “30 to 40” Muslim students left the assembly. In its statement the ICV said the incident was a “departmental matter” and they would allow the school to deal with the issue. “We will provide advice to the Department of Education in subsequent years, but ultimately it is their decision,” the ICV statement said. Education Minister James Merlino last week threw his support behind the school, saying the school had shown “respect and sensitivity to the different cultures and faiths within its community”, and that the action of the students “was not a sign of disrespect”.
By LACHLAN MOORHEAD
Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School principal Cheryl Irving said the decision was made in adherence with Muharram - the Islamic month of mourning associated with Shi’a Muslims in which they do not participate in “joyful events”. “Muharram is a cultural observation marking the death of Imam Hussein,” Ms Irving said. “This year it falls between Tuesday 13 October and Thursday 12 November. During this time Shi’a do not participate in joyful events as it is a period of mourning. “This includes listening to music, attending parties, wearing nail polish or make-up, etc. “Prior to last week’s Years 2-6 assembly commencing, an announcement was made advising anyone participating in Muharram, that it was an opportune time to leave the hall as music was about to be played (the National Anthem). “Anyone who was unable to listen to music due to this cultural observance was given adequate time to comply with their religious belief.”

ASKED what the favourite memory of his late uncle was, Ramesh doesn’t hesitate. “Every day was the happiest day with him,” the Cranbourne resident said. Ramesh Bector lost his uncle, Shaun, to cancer in 2013, while his best friend Karen also died from the disease in 2012. It stands to reason that Ramesh didn’t hesitate in signing up for next month’s Cranbourne Narre Relay for Life at Casey Fields, in memory of those he’s lost. “It was a big loss,” Ramesh said. “I was depressed, I couldn’t get over that I lost my uncle - he raised me. “We were very close me and my uncle, playing soccer, cricket, spending time together, and going on holidays. “There was a strong bond between us. “Seeing him lose his fight against cancer was painful.” When he takes part in this year’s relay, Ramesh will have Shaun and Karen in his hearts. This is his first time participating in the event. Last year he watched the relay and was incredibly moved by the initiative. “I looked at the thousands of people and thought why not me?” he said. “I don’t have to be a cancer patient to take part.” Last year $121,880 was raised at the Cranbourne Narre Relay For Life. “I hope my story will encourage others to get involved

when our youth are going to have to step up. “What better thing to do in your life than protect another, than to go out there and do good for the community? “The Victorian community can’t afford a paid CFA workforce to replace its volunteers.” To underline the point, the CFA’s 1240 brigades include just 33 that are staffed by paid fire-fighters. As for himself, Mr Owen said he loves the CFA because of its familylike camaraderie and the calibre of its self-sacrificing recruits. “They are, in my opinion, of the highest order in the community. “To put your body and your life on the line for another is just something that says it all. “And it’s damned good fun.”

NEW arrivals’ lack of fire-smarts loom as a challenge ahead of a dry, perilous bushfire season, says the region’s CFA boss Trevor Owen. Assistant Chief Officer Owen, who oversees Victoria’s south-east including metropolitan Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, said he’d like to see fire awareness taught in primary and high schools even in the suburbs. “We will continue to live amongst (native vegetation). It’s beautiful but incredibly dangerous. “When you think of the growing risk we face, and it’s not going to go away, we should be educating children about the dangers of bushfires. “We need to build it into schools so generations growing up appreciate the risk.” There should be a concerted campaign to inform leaders of our community’s varied cultures, he argued. “Many who come to Australia to live don’t understand the bushfire risk. They haven’t grown up around it and are oblivious. “How we work with the multicultural communities is an important factor.” The official fire season is expected to arrive early this year - sometime in November. Soils have dried and grassland fuel has built over consecutive rainsparse years. Volunteers, as always, are the “backbone of the CFA’s firefighting power” this summer but more are needed to pitch in, Mr Owen said. He believes volunteer culture is one of Australia’s success stories. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult. Our average age (in the CFA) is getting older and there comes a time

PRETTY balls of yellow fluff now look over Clyde. A native to the region- the Billy Button flower was the inspiration for the Clyde North public art piece. Standing at five metres tall, the stainless steel pop of colour by renowned artist, Matthew Harding, holds pride of place on Berwick-Cranbourne Road at the entrance to the Bloom estate. A fitting sculpture for a new and blooming Clyde North, the floral- inspired eye catcher is meant to serve as a metaphor for the growth of the area.

WHEN Star News Group journos have to slave away at the keyboard on a public holiday, we do it to a carnival-like atmosphere. With an array of chips, dips and a barbecue of fresh tucker, Melbourne may have stopped in its tracks for the big race- but your local newspaper kept at it for its people- listening to the race on an old Panasonic radio. HOME gardeners unite! The Myuna Farm’s monthly produce swap needs your fresh greens. Vegetables, fruit, eggs, seeds and seedlings, compost and worm castings are all welcome at the farms swap held on the second Saturday of each month, from 9am to 10am. Swap your bulk home grown goods for something you need on Saturday 14 November. “SHIVERS! Wowie! I’m amazed!” He exclaimed when the Gippsland man from southeast Victoria heard about the $20million Tattslotto money he was about to welcome into his bank account. The Gippy local won division one in the Halloween Superdraw. Wishing to remain anonymous, the man had this to say: “I’ll pay of our home and help out my family with my winnings.” Green with envy we can only hope we’re related to this guy!

THE NBN will be rolled out over most of Casey by the end of 2017. NBN Co recently released its three-year construction plan, with lots of Casey suburbs on the list. One of the first areas scheduled for the NBN is Endeavour Hills, which has been put down to receive the rollout in the first half of 2016. Cranbourne North, Narre Warren, and Narre Warren South are listed for the second half of 2016. Berwick, Blind Bight, Cannons Creek, Tooradin and Warneet are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016. Meanwhile, a number of suburbs are on the list to be hooked up in 2017, including Hampton Park, Lynbrook, Lyndhurst, Botanic Ridge, Clyde, Cranbourne, Cranbourne East, Cranbourne West, Devon
Meadows, and Pearcedale. Doveton, Eumemmerring, Hallam, Lysterfield South, and Narre Warren North are scheduled for the second half of 2017. In March, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Casey in his capacity as Federal Communications Minister to announce that Narre Warren South had been added to the rollout list. Mr Turnbull came to the Casey Central Shopping Centre to confirm the long-awaited development, which will see work on Narre Warren South’s NBN begin in the second half of 2016. It was then he also met Steve Barnes, a Narre Warren South resident and passionate NBN campaigner. Mr Barnes, an IT worker, operates from home and has been advocating for a better internet service in his suburb for 12 years.

can take shape in many different ways,” he said. But it’s Sgt Lane’s long-term concerns that really worry him. “If we have such a problem now, in five years what is our problem surrounding family violence going to look like then, it’s not something that’s happened over night, it’s been going on a long time,” he said. Sgt Lane admitted he thought the court system was good at prosecuting, but fell short in promoting change in the offender. “We have a very strong network of agencies assisting the victims of family violence but I don’t know if there’s enough help and rehabilitation for the offender to let them think about how they’ve been acting to prevent it from continuing,” he said. At the moment the CFVU’s main area of response is tackling repeat offenders. “If a person comes to our attention more than three times in the last year we get involved with the family and even more involved with the offender,” Sgt Lane said. The CFVU has been operating for five years and Sgt Lane encourages those affected by family violence and even bystanders to “get involved and call police”. “If family violence reports went down I’d ask myself why, because I don’t know that enough is being done at the moment to stem the flow,” he said.

THE man in charge of the Casey Family Violence Unit (CFVU) is ecstatic with the region’s small increase in reported family violence cases. In the past two years to June 2015 family violence reports in Casey have gone up 1.1 per cent according to a recent report by the Crime Statistics Agency. From July 2014 to June 2015 the City of Casey had reported 3775 family violence cases compared to the previous year’s 3733 - which is something Sergeant Ian Lane from the CFVU is rather happy about. He’s been in the force for 37 years - patrolling Casey for 15 of them - and has been in charge of the CFVU for two years, and told Star News he was surprised at the increase. “Only increasing 1.1 per cent in the last financial year is a surprise to me because Casey’s population has grown more than one per cent in that time,” Sgt Lane said. “I would have thought it would be higher than that but I’m ecstatic it’s not. “However it’s still an unacceptable number and we have to keep doing everything we can as a community and state to stop it.” The numbers show a steady rise in reported family violence cases over the past six years, rising 41 per cent since July 2010, but Sgt Lane said it was a good thing.
“We’re actually happy for the number of reports to police to increase,” he said. “Because it means people are comfortable speaking to us about it so we can help put a stop to it and that’s a really positive thing - but the down side is family violence is happening far more often than we’d like.” The CFVU averages about 10 family violence reports every day and Sgt Lane said the team dealt with intervention order breaches the most. “Contrary to popular belief most of our work isn’t offences of physical violence, it’s a substantial part of what we do but most of it is after the charges have been laid and the perpetrator breaches their intervention order,” he said. The typical family violence offender is male aged 18 to 45 years old. Sgt Lane said the CFVU did not see a lot of female offenders. “Females assaulting males may not be reported to the same level but I could count on one hand the number of those incidents over the last couple of months,” he said, adding that reports of emotional and psychological abuse is what they see most regularly. Threats, economical abuse and controlling behaviours are common in Casey and Sgt Lane said “I’m sure a lot is going on that we’re not told about.” “A male exercising control over their female partner is the real crux of the problem and it

AUSTRALIA’S servicemen will never be forgotten at Alkira Secondary College. This month students and staff from the Cranbourne North high school paid their respects to Australia’s fallen soldiers when they officially opened a memorial garden on the school’s grounds. The garden was funded through a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs and designed by the school’s 2014 and 2015 senior VCAL students. A number of special guests attended the unveiling, including Cranbourne-Dandenong RSL president John Wells, Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME) association president Michael Newbond, Vietnam veterans education team member Rob Lowe, and Casey councillor Mick Morland. Students Cath Yasin and Jordan Creely spoke to the crowd about the many hours spent preparing the special garden. “This memorial garden is a project that the Year 12 Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students of 2014 have spent many hours planning and creating, to remember those who served for our peace and humanity, the fallen, the casualities of war and those who still currently serve our country,” Cath said.
Cath Yasin (2014 VCAL student) and Tayla Rollens (2015 VCAL student) cut the ribbon to the memorial garden with Casey councillor Mick Morland. “The Year 12 VCAL students of 2015 spent many hours ordering supplies for and building this garden for these same reasons.” It was reiterated at the opening how people from the Cranbourne area had supported the nation in times of conflict, with over 100 soldiers estimated to have enlisted from the region in World War I. The students went on to say the garden, which is a tribute to soldiers from all eras, was not only set up to remember and thank servicemen for their time, but also helped bring the students closer together. “They have made our final years of schooling memorable as well as developing longlasting memories that we will remember for many years,” Cath said.
“This is another reason why this memorial garden will be built - so that we will always have a place to remember them.” Alkira also presented their Vietnam veterans film presentations, called the 'When We Remember’ film project on the same day. The senior VCAL students worked in small groups to create seven films of veterans from the Vietnam war. The students filmed the veterans at Alkira Secondary College, the Shrine of Remembrance and the Vietnam Veterans Museum at Phillip Island. One of the veterans, Phil White OAM, passed away in April and his film was shown today to his widow and daughter - the last footage taken of the honourable man.

Pumped for Vegas trip SHE says fitness is in her blood - and it’s taking her from Cranbourne to Las Vegas. Personal trainer and nutritional therapist Davina Maree, 32, has qualified to compete in an international body building competition next month. A world renowned multi sports expo, the Natural Olympia Las Vegas is one of the biggest of its kind and something Davina has worked hard to
qualify for. “Most days I’m at the gym, five days I’m strength training and the other two I’m doing cardio,” Davina said. Having grown up in a family of bakers, Davina said fitness became an early passion of hers. “I was exposed to the effects of poor dietary choices and the toll it takes on the body and this developed a keen interest in good health practices,” she said.
After training for just four months Davina entered her first body building competition in September this year, and Las Vegas will mark just her third competition. “I find fitness and nutrition complement each other and I’m constantly researching new science to facilitate the best nutrition protocols,” she said. Flying out on Sunday 1 November Davina will be up against hundreds of other sculptured gym junkies.
Gun reported in street brawl
1202687-PB45-15
POLICE are investigating an ugly brawl in Cranbourne involving about 10 people, in which it’s believed one of the men had a gun. Two men were walking north along the South Gippsland Highway around 9.45pm on Saturday 31 October when a car drove past them and the occupants allegedly shouted abuse at them.
When the car came back around towards the victims, seven to 10 men got out of it and started a fight with the two people on the street. It’s alleged a gun was seen by one of the victims during the brawl. One of the victim’s fathers was nearby and ran to help them. Then one of the victims al-

AUSTRALIA-WIDE Children’s Week celebrations landed in Berwick with a free activities day. The annual week recognises the talents, skills, achievements and rights of children - and the City of Casey put on a free fun day at the recently-redeveloped playground at the Old Cheese Factory, on Thursday 29 October. Children had the chance to get crafty, have a go at hammering in a nail and strike a few tunes on the African drums. This year marks 25 years since Australia signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was the theme of the week. Children’s week will end on Sunday 1 November.

New taste twist HEROES Burger Diner is a burger diner, but not as you know it, according to owner and chef Didier Richard. This small family owned business has, according to its owner “an old school vibe with a new school twist”. What does that mean? A burger diner in the south east serving burgers, chips, hot dogs, ribs, chicken and waffles, milkshakes/thick shakes, donuts and sweets - all home made with house baked brioche buns which are freshly baked daily. “We mix our own premium beef patties, we make our own condiments and spices, we make our own sweets - cookies, slices and brownies,” Didier said of the business that opened just over three months ago. “We have our own Bronuts - brioche donuts filled with Nutella, strawberry jam or vanilla custard. “Our milkshake/ thickshake flavours aren’t your traditional chocolate and blue heaven etc - you will find flavours such as banana peanut butter, Nutella, Oreo cookies, salted caramel and strawberry jam.” All this is wrapped up in a fun superhero/ comic book theme.
Didier and Adela at Heroes Burger Diner.
What makes it different? “The fact that we make our own bread and sell it as a burger,” he said. “Very few places in Melbourne do that - we don’t sell the bun itself. “We create a new burger as a weekly special every Tuesday and run it for one week only. “It is all part of our plan to give the locals a taste of what quality burgers are like in the city without having to travel the distance of pay the hefty price. “We also focus on other homemade diner style food such as chicken and waffles, baby back ribs, hot dogs and a range of condiments. “We are an all in one burger, chicken, hot dog and chip shop. “We are not just your regular slap it on burger shop.
“You have a qualified head chef in the kitchen with more than 10 years’ experience who has carefully crafted each and every burger to have its own unique taste.” Didier is a past head chef in numerous restaurants around Melbourne. “I’m classically trained with modern cooking techniques,” he said. Didier has business acumen running in his blood as he is the son of well-known Hampton Park business couple Lucy and Burty Richard of Lucy’s Divine Cakes and Sugar Buns. Heroes Burger Diner can be found at 14-6 Fordholm Road, (behind the medical centre) Hampton Park. Phone 8768 8868. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 9pm.

Hampton Park Secondary College in 2015, celebrates 29 years of providing dedicated educational services to our local community. This time in our history affords an opportunity to reflect upon our vision for the future and the goals that will take us there. We, at Hampton Park Secondary, remain very much committed to ensuring that our community has the best educational opportunities the College is able to provide. We remain a College that is very much in touch with our community and we see our students and their achievement as the core business that drives the College to consolidate our efforts and to continuously strive to improve our performance. Our connections in the local community are reflected by our college core values of Respect, Learning and Working Together. It is these values that motivate us to ensure that our curriculum offerings, classroom practice, the educational and career pathways on offer to our students are second to none. Indeed, our primary focus is on creating the environment, resources and subject offering that provide all students with an effective pathway in life on completing their schooling. We pride ourselves on being able to offer the broadest possible range of programs and experiences for our students, whether that be through sport, music, our broadly based VCE offerings, VCAL and our extensive VET programs. Over the course of the past 2 years, staff have worked on developing learning sequences that provide access to the curriculum for every student in every classroom in a supportive and safe classroom environment. I continue to be immensely proud of our students and of their achievements academically, in their sporting endeavors and in their commitment and contributions in community. Our College seeks to nurture and support our future community leaders as they grow, encouraging them to take on increasing responsibility at the College and in the wider community. We celebrate their achievements and successes with them, in the positions of leadership they hold on local council committees and state leadership bodies as well as their ability and talent evidenced in the Arts. This includes music and dance, as seen in our regular and successful participation in events such as the College’s ‘State of the Arts’ performance. As leaders of tomorrow, the spirit, commitment and talent of our students at Hampton Park Secondary College fill me with great hope for the future.
It has been my privilege to lead Chairo’s Pakenham campus since it began eighteen years ago and to see it develop into the dynamic and productive community of over 600 students from Kinder to Year 12 that it is today. Students are able to start as three-year-olds at our beautiful, well-resourced campus between Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon, and then transition smoothly from Kinder to Junior School (Prep to Year 4), and then to Middle School (Years 5 to 8) and Senior School (Years 9 to 12). Our goal is to give students every opportunity to learn, excel and grow in a nurturing and challenging environment. We provide a range of experiences and opportunities as part of a diverse and rigorous education. We value and affirm that each individual possesses God-given gifts and we desire that students will mature into strong Christian men and women who are active within the community. Our mission is to provide excellence in Christ-centred education in partnership with families within a caring Christian community. An education at Chairo is founded upon a partnership between family and school, and we encourage parents to be active participants in the educational process. 1193163-CG30-15

Founded in 1970, Maranatha Christian School is the longest serving Christian school in Victoria, built on the foundations of Christian service, integrity, academic excellence and community service. It is a delight to be principal of Maranatha Christian School, which is a wonderful school community, committed to working together to ensure the best outcomes for all students. Maranatha has two well-resourced primary schools and early learning centres at Officer and Doveton feeding into a technologically rich education in middle and senior school at Endeavour Hills. In addition to its rigorous academic pathway that challenges students to think creatively and apply what they have learned, the school also offers a fully integrated and well-rounded pathway for VCAL students that supports them in their future careers. With dedicated, talented and faithful staff, a Maranatha student is well prepared to discover their God given gifts and talents and so become leaders in a wide variety of fields. Raising children in today’s world and ensuring a quality, affordable education is challenging, so the strong partnership between school and home and Maranatha’s dedication to Christian learning supports parents in their decisions. There is no better wish that we have as parents but to see our children maximize what God has given them by using those gifts to the benefit of others. School is a journey that we travel together. I look forward to your partnership as we help boys and girls move from today’s students to tomorrow’s leaders. In doing so we strive to achieve our utmost for His glory.

The centre, headed by director owners Matthew Hall and Peter Harrison and Customer Service manager Simon Robinson, will hold a party to celebrate on that day from 10am to 3pm. Simon said although they have only been operating for a year, the facility prided it’s self in offering a 24-7 training facility with a friendly environment, unlimited group fitness classes, functional training and personal training. “We have a purpose-built training facility, with a friendly environment which is family orientated and with results
guaranteed,” he said. “Our focus is the individual member with personalised service and programs offered in a non-intimidating environment. “We take a member-centred approach in order to achieve goals to creat a healthier and happier community, to raise awareness and promote good health.” He said to celebrate the birthday there would be plenty of membership and product discounts and two weeks free if you mention this editorial when joining up. The team pride themselves in their experience according to Simon. Peter and Simon, two of the personal trainers, have more
than six years of personal training experience and club management experience,” he said. Peter has been a personal trainer for six years and won national Personal T of the year for a previous employer, achieved amazing results with hundreds of clients over his career. PEOPLE with darker skin types also get skin cancers, pictured right. People from the Mediterranean regions, Arabic countries and those from Turkey, Iran and the Indian subcontinent all have a significant risk of skin cancer in Australia. Most commonly they get the less aggressive basal cell cancers from their forties and fifties onwards. Often these basal cell cancers are more pigmented and can sometimes be confused with the more aggressive melanoma. Check out those spots The condition keratoacanthoma is a variant of squamous cell cancer of the skin. They present as firm domes or balls containing a central plug of keratin (dead skin), pictured above right. They grow alarmingly quickly and can get to a centimetre or more in diameter in a matter of weeks. Typically they are most common on sun exposed sites of the body in people over 50. Despite their rapid rate of growth they are not an especially aggressive form of cancer and are very unlikely to spread to lymph glands or through the bloodstream to distant organs (metastasise). Untreated they can eventually shrink and go away but this often leaves an unattractive ragged indented scar. They are best cut out surgically and sent for examination under the microscope to confirm the diagnosis.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Got the fizz By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE’S a fair bit of fizz happening at a newly opened Dandenong South brewery. South East Brewing, which makes the crafty Exit Brewery beers, Kaiju Beer and Golden Axe Cider, was visited by an international food buyers delegation on 28 October - a week after opening the factory. Brewers Callam and Nat Reeves (Kaiju Beer), and Grum Knight (Exit Brewery) poured out cider and high-flavour, high-alcohol content beers for the delegation. One of the options included the Kaiju double imperial pale ale (IPA) that won gold at the Australian Craft Beer Association Awards this month. Callam Reeves said the higher alcohol content - up to 11 per cent, or four and a half standard drinks - was balanced by the beers’ extra malty and hoppy flavours. The Kaiju labels - a Mambolike array of designs by artist Mikey Burton - also stands apart from the crowd. Exit Brewery’s smoked stout was developed by brewer Grum Knight. The inspiration struck him while visiting Belfast. The complex stout consists of a smoked malt; an injection of peat also gives the beer a whiskey-like flavour, Mr Knight said.
Callam Reeves pops open a high-strength beer. 146263 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Over two days, the delegates also toured Clayton Southbased manufacturer Annex Foods, Laurent Bakery in Braeside, dry dairy and beverage mix manufacturer Mansfields in Keysborough, Coolibah Herbs in Pearcedale, Europa Cheese in Pakenham and fruit grower Montague Fresh in Lysterfield. The delegates also visited Victoria’s agricultural regions
as well as processing plants and food research centres. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the mission was a chance for food producers to forge new relationships with overseas buyers - and hence jobs for Victorians. The food and fibre export sector employs more than 190,000 Victorians; its exports worth is $11.6 billion.
Gerry takes a step back By CASEY NEILL GERRY Ryan has left the building - Jayco’s Dandenong factory, that is. He’s retired as CEO of Australia’s largest RV manufacturer, which he founded more than 40 years ago. Mr Ryan told the Journal he stepped down about a month ago and that Carl Bizon from Keysborough’s TriMas Corporation had taken the reins. His comments came during a discussion about the Victorian Manufacturing Showcase, held at Chisholm in Dandenong on 27 October. “I’m sure that it will be there next year. I don’t know that if they’ll invite me back again,” he said. “I might be on the shelf next year - I might be yesterday’s hero!” Mr Bizon told the Journal Mr Ryan remained the Jayco board chairman. “Gerry ultimately came to the view that he needed to withdraw from the day-to-day operations of Jayco,“ he said. “He approached an external recruitment firm and they found me.” Mr Bizon said he was honoured to work for Mr Ryan. “He’s an extraordinary entrepreneur and a leader,” he said. “It was very humbling for him to choose me to take on the role.” He had to walk away from “an amazing job” at TriMas. “The chance to work for Gerry was something I found pretty compelling,” he said.
Gerry Ryan.
Carl Bizon at TriMas. 133022 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Mr Bizon started his working life in the steel industry in Newcastle in 1980. “Through various manufacturing jobs in the steel industry and associated industrial products and industrial markets I’ve ended up here,” he said. Mr Bizon was in June included on the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Honour Roll for helping to make TriMas Australia’s largest towing system manufacturer. “In the seven years that I’ve been here we’ve tripled the size of the company. It’s been a pretty good ride,” he said. It was Mr Ryan who presented him with the award. “That was mid-process so that was kind of funny,” he said. “It was quite a humbling moment when Gerry presented me with my award.” Mr Bizon said he was find-
ing his feet with the 1200-plus Jayco staff. “Everyone’s been very welcoming,” he said. “The dedication and commitment of the team to the business and to Gerry is something to be treasured.” Mr Bizon said he was working on plans to develop the business and its people. “I’m in no hurry. The company in fundamentally sound - there’s nothing broken,” he said. “From where I sit it’s just really about bringing contemporary manufacturing techniques and philosophies to a very wellestablished business. “I understand the product very well. I’ve been a Jayco owner for 14-odd years. It’s helped me to get up to speed very quickly.”
Manufacturing’s best on show By CASEY NEILL

EVEN Jayco mastermind Gerry Ryan learnt a thing or two at the Victorian Manufacturing Showcase. He said 600 people attended the event at Chisholm Institute in Dandenong on Tuesday 27 October, up from 500 last year. “Which is a 20 per cent increase - any business would like that type of increase,” he said. “Manufacturing’s alive and well.” Mr Ryan said the panel members had “actually done it” and shared ideas that would help others to improve. “Even though I’ve reached some heights, I had some take away messages from every one of the presenters,” he said. “I wrote three pages of notes, it was just fantastic.” He said the event gave manufacturers an opportunity to network and work together. “We get stuck in our busi-
nesses and don’t get to take time out,” he said. “It was a great springboard for everyone to go back into their businesses and improve their businesses and their network of contacts.” Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced the $5 million Future Industries Fund Manufacturing Program at the event. “This fund will support Victorian manufacturers to invest in new technologies and processes, and help to transition Victoria toward a high-tech manufacturing economy,” she said. Ms D’Ambrosio said companies could apply for up to $500,000 to invest in new manufacturing technologies and processes that would create new jobs, increase productivity and boost economic growth. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden said the cash could only be
good news. “What I like about what they’re saying is the innovation can be product, process, organisation ... it depends what you’re trying to do,” he said. “I think the government is recognising that innovation isn’t just product.” Chisholm Institute engineering, electrotechnology and telecommunications associate director Paul Sadler said he picked up information he could take back to the classroom. “I invited a 3D printer to come back and talk to the group that’s doing 3D printing,” he said. “It wasn’t just about sitting there and listening to people speak. “There was an opportunity for people to engage with senior leaders in manufacturing about their success stories, and try to glean some advice that they could use to improve their business.”
New look for Millers at Fountain Gate FASHION retailer Millers officially unveiled its new flagship store at Westfield Fountain Gate on 17 October. The 340 square metre store is the latest in the company’s 360-strong chain of outlets around Australia. Millers marketing head Evelyn Kipriotis said the Fountain
Gate store was the result of two years of customer research. “We believe our women deserve to not only look amazing, but feel amazing, and that means treating them to a memorable shopping experience,“ she said. “Shoppers will feel like they’ve stepped into a beauti-
ful home as the design is based on comfort and style instead of standard shop fittings. “The cash register area emulates a kitchen environment and a garden theme runs through the entire store to a community space at the back, with shelving full of books customers can take and exchange and a notice board.“

SUITED to all sectors of the market, this 145acre ex-dairy farm is found in the middle of fantastic finishing country – excellent as turn-out paddocks, ideal as a lifestyle property or the prime place for land banking for the potential future development south east of Pakenham. Located 6.5 kilometres from the South Gippsland Highway and only 15 minutes to Pakenham; the bustling town of Lang Lang is also nearby, offering a convenient range of shops, both a primary and pre-school, and many additional community groups and clubs. There are two homes, one, a twobedroom cottage and the larger, a threebedroom residence which would have been the original home on the near 100-year-old farm. Once an impressive family residence, it does not take too much imagination to see the potential for renovation here. Wide verandahs on two sides, high ceilings with plaster mouldings, and timber plate rails in some rooms plus original doors and timber floorboards are all great features inside, and a multi-gabled roofline and weatherboard exterior provides loads of character.
In addition to the three generous bedrooms, there are two separate living areas - a rear sunroom/porch and partial renovation of the kitchen and main bathroom has already been undertaken. This house has potential to be a great project for those seeking a rural lifestyle. A variety of useful shedding is also available here – a disused dairy, hayshed, large implement shed and sundry shedding as well as cattle facilities and a central laneway to the 12 paddocks. Bore water catered for by a large water license and two road frontages are among a range of other features.

IF they gave out points for enthusiasm and dedication then Zed Nasheet of LJ Hooker, Hampton Park, would be an 11 out of 10. The 25-year-old real estate agent is quickly building a niche for himself in his chosen profession with an innovative approach to marketing which is drawing attention and not just around Melbourne. Describing himself as a “24-hour agent” never off the clock who’s passion and whose hobby is real estate, Zed has been an agent for almost seven years. In recent times his innovative marketing style has been featured on the Channel 7 news and Channel 9s “A Current Affairs”. He has found his point of difference in the market - video. “Yes, property video had ‘been done’ before, but not like this,” he said of his funny but inclusive minifilms aimed at showing not just the homes inclusively but their locations and potential lifestyles. “Stepping in front of the camera pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and I quickly learnt that it was very natural for me,” Zed said. “In no time my videos took me to become a household name within my community and most recently across the country.
“Real estate is my career, my hobby and my life. The competitive nature of this industry and the adrenalin when negotiating life-changing deals is what I thrive on. I am always looking ahead at the next step in my life, and combining my passion for real estate and love for being in front of the camera is the next chapter.”
He said while the videos are a lot of fun, they are also great tool for selling properties interstate and overseas because they “showed” the real house better than a static photo ever could. Find Zed Nasheet and the team at shop 20, Hampton Park Shopping Centre, or call on 9702 8388.

Suburb’s fit for a soldier
What’s on
By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE MPA is one step closer to re-naming part of Clyde North to ‘McPherson’, in tribute to a WWI soldier who lived in the area. In its most recent agenda the City of Casey has outlined plans to meet with the Metropolitan Planning Authority
(MPA) to discuss the renaming. It’s understood the MPA has written to council nominating ‘McPherson’ as the new name for the northern part of Clyde North. The name ‘McPherson’ was suggested in tribute to an enlisted WWI soldier whose family lived in the Clyde region.
It also coincides with the Centenary Anzac commemorations running from 2014 to 2018. Clyde North is part of the Balla Balla Ward, overseen by Cr Geoff Ablett. Cr Ablett told Star News he wouldn’t object to the renaming in honour of a “WWI Digger from the area”.

South was just too good By RUSSELL BENNETT
Michael Clarke's sudden death serves as a reminder for just how precious life is.
Lyndale on pause By RUSSELL BENNETT LYNDALE Cricket Club’s senior players didn’t take to the field on Saturday. Instead, many of them were at home - spending time with their loved ones. The tragic passing of Michael ‘Pup’ Clarke just last week stunned Lyndale to its core, but reminded everyone in the local community - from West Gippsland to Dandenong - just how precious life is; and to take stock of what’s truly important. Michael is being remembered as a genuinely great bloke who loved the gym and working on his health and fitness. That’s part of what makes his passing, in his thirties, so unimaginably cruel. He headed home from the cricket on the Saturday the weekend before last to get a few hours’ sleep before one of his shifts as a security guard, and didn’t wake up. Rodney Keyaerts, Lyndale’s junior president, said Michael - a left-arm off-spinner in the Turf 5 side - “just adored the club”. “He had a great relationship with the young players coming through, in particular,” Rodney said, adding that Michael was a kind of mentor to many of the younger players in his side - many of them teenagers. “Ours is a club in a bit of a transition at the moment, with a lot of kids coming through and some of the older players moving on. “We know our firsts will probably struggle this season, but this sort of thing really puts that into context.” Cricket clubs provide so much more than an avenue for players to take to the field with bat and ball each week. They’re a support network for their members, in good times and bad - through the highs, and the lows - and a family club like Lyndale has now been galvanised by one of its darkest days.
WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION - T2O ALL-STARS SOME of the biggest names in West Gippsland cricket, along with some emerging new talent, showcased their skills at Glover Reserve in Devon Meadows on Sunday for the now annual ‘North’ versus ‘South’ T20 clash. The concept of the game was conceived and developed by a group of current and former WGCA ‘Warriors’ representative players as a means of showcasing the large array of talent within the association both north and south of the Princes Highway. And the ‘South’ - captained by Devon Meadows gun Matt Hutchinson - came away with the bragging rights, defeating the ‘North’ by six wickets. Adding a little extra insult to injury, the North was skippered by Hutchinson’s housemate Pakenham Upper-Toomuc player-coach Scott Clark. The South won the toss and put the North in to bat, and while practically everyone in Clark’s side made a start, no one reached 20 as they were dismissed for 138. Kooweerup’s Jake Bardwell and Catani’s Ben Ahern took 2/17 and 2/12 respectively, while Clyde star Kyle Brooke was particularly economical with the ball, finishing with 1/9 from his four overs. Demons wicket-keeper Chris Bright was outstanding behind the stumps, taking two catches, and two stumpings one of those off Tooradin gun Tom Hussey. And he kept up his out-
Clyde star Kyle Brooke shone with bat and ball on Sunday. 146412 Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT standing form with the bat in the South’s reply, blasting 56 from just 23 balls thanks to six fours and two thunderous sixes. Seagulls all-rounder Josh Lownds (19) and Brooke (25) were the not-out batsmen for the South (4/143) as they secured a comprehensive sixwicket win in just the 16th over. Emerald import Hashan Goonetilleke took two wickets for the North to go along with his 17 with the bat. He was named co-man of the match with Bright. Entry to the game for fans was by gold coin donation, with all proceeds being donated to the Ponting Foundation to help support families dealing with childhood cancers. A range of Kookaburra cricket equipment was also raffled off on the day, with all proceeds of that going towards

Brookers set the T20 benchmark By RUSSELL BENNETT
Michael Clarke is being remembered as a genuine bloke who adored his club. In a genuine display of support and solidarity for their own Lyndale brethren doing it tough, the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) accepted the club’s request to postpone the weekend’s matches on compassionate grounds. “Please enjoy the day free of cricket and take time to spend quality time with your family and friends,” said a statement on Lyndale’s Facebook page. “We thank the DDCA and opposition clubs for their understanding.” Buckley Ridges (in Turf 1), Hallam Kalora Park (in Turf 5), and Berwick (in B Grade) all agreed to have their games against Lyndale postponed. Rest in Peace, Pup.
GEMBROOK once again looms as the real giant-killer of this season’s Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup in the West Gippsland Cricket Association. The Brookers, in B Grade in the WGCA, knocked off Premier division outfit Emerald by four wickets on Tuesday last week to advance to the second round of the knockout competition. It’s the second time in as many years Gembrook has eliminated Emerald from the tournament, after defeating the Bombers by three wickets in Round 2 last season. After winning the toss and electing to bat this time around, the Bombers lost both AJ Walker and Julian Scott early and continued to lose a steady stream of wickets throughout their innings to be all out for 101. Geordie Scott finished with 3/27 from his four overs, including an incredible reflex
Gembrook all-rounder Geordie Scott hung on to this brilliant caught-and-bowled chance in his side's upset win over Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT Emerald. 146422 caught-and-bowled that had to be seen to be believed. The Brookers’ marquee player Kunal Kapoor, from DDCA Turf 1 outfit Buckley Ridges, finished with 3/21 and backed that up with a hardhitting 34 at the top of Gembrook’s batting order. Skipper Andrew Hilder (43) top-scored with a series of big hits, including some off the Bombers’ marquee player - for-
mer Kooweerup junior - Adam McMaster as the Brookers reached 6/102 in just 15 overs. In other results from across the first round of the Kookaburra Cup so far, Merinda Park (9/144) just had a little too much in the tank for Clyde (7/137) despite 5/20 from Cougars seamer Kyle Brooke; and Pakenham Upper-Toomuc (8/203) proved far too powerful for St Francis Xavier (101) at Yabbieland.

Victory is near for Swannies By DAVID NAGEL CASEY South-Melbourne is just two wickets and a healthy run chase away from its first win of the season after a topsy-turvy day one against Footscray Edgewater (8/196) at Casey Fields. The Swans’ day started perfectly with Lachlan Sperling winning the toss and asking the visitors to bat first on a wicket that was certain to seam. The start of play was delayed but, when it did begin, the Swans pounced.
Opening bowlers Nathan Lambden (3/26 off 12) and Leigh Diston (3/23 off 12) had their motors purring early, claiming two wickets each to have Footscray in all sorts of trouble at 4/10. Talented number three Daniel Hodgson (37) was proving a tough nut to crack but his departure saw the Swans still well on top with the opposition at 7/69. But that’s when the momentum of the match changed rapidly. The out-of-form Ben Green’s (75 not out) eighth-wicket partnership of 107 with Lucas Dredge (44) dug the
Left: Casey-South Melbourne players were up and about after a great start to Saturday's Premier Division fixture against Footscray Picture: DONNA OATES Edgewater at Casey Fields. 146295 visitors out of a massive hole. Green was very selective, stroking 12 fours during his three-hour vigil, while Dredge was more attacking, hitting five fours and two towering sixes. Green, a player with four knocks in the Premier Division this season that have totalled 27, still stands in the Swans’ way. He was dumped to the seconds for last week’s clash against Prahran, where he scored 20. Somehow it’s not surprising and just typical of the Swans’ luck this season that even the improbable becomes more
than a likely possibility. Lambden and Diston were the pick of the Swannies’ bowlers, while Jackson Fry (2/24) was also impressive in his nine overs at the crease. The Swans need to claim Green or Alex Hewet (13 not out) early, and then number 11Jeremy Hart before they can launch their assault. It will then be up to in-form opener Kasun Suriaratchie to lay the platform for victory. Play recommences this Saturday at Casey Fields at 11am.
Demons in spot of trouble By DAVID NAGEL WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION PAKENHAM remains the trend setter and Kooweerup’s star-studded top-order was made to look ordinary in an eye-opening ending to round four of the West Gippsland Premier Division on Saturday. Cardinia (8/257cc) sent its arch-rival and back-to-back reigning champion Kooweerup (67) into a semi-crisis meeting after the Bulls charged through the Demons at Gunton Oval. The entire senior list of Kooweerup was called into a meeting on Monday night to discuss some issues that need to be addressed. One of those may be how to play spin after Bulls’ coach Dwayne Doig (6/31 off 22.3) swept a path of destruction through the Demons’ elitequality top order. Stars like Michael Giles (0), Jess Mathers (4) and Chris Bright (0) were mesmerised by Doig, who had his first real impact since returning from a three-year hiatus from the club. Travis Welsh (3/1) took three wickets for the Bulls, including the scalps of Matt Bright (21) and Matt Davey (14) who top-scored for the Demons. Pakenham (295) finds itself a game clear at the top of the table after the Lions put their day-one advantage to good use against Emerald (140) at Toomuc Reserve. Openers Chris Smith (81) and Russell Lehman (53) did the majority of the grunt work a week earlier, getting to stumps at 0/85, but things didn’t go according to plan early on day two.
Lehman scored his 50 before departing; both Ben Shipperd (5) and Sean Gramc (6) went cheaply, but skipper Dom Paynter (40), Rob Elston (31), while lower-order pair Daniel Vela (30 not out) and Jack Anning (28) made sure some centre-wicket batting practice was put to good use. The Lions have a tough run through to Christmas, with reigning-premier Kooweerup, thirdplaced Merinda Park, and back-to-back encounters against second-placed Tooradin set to define their season. AJ Walker (3/47) toiled hard for the Bombers. Tooradin (4/147dec) openers Tom Hussey (69) and Josh Lownds (54) compiled a 127-run partnership as the Seagulls toyed with Merinda Park (134) at Donnelly Reserve. Resuming at 0/63, the left (Lownds) and right (Hussey) hand combination had the Cobras on toast, doubling their day-one efforts against a Reece Williams (3/53) led attack. The Seagulls replace the Cobras in second place after the win. Upper Beaconsfield’s (7/209dec) first win of the season had some real bite, the Maroons jumping to sixth place on the table after claiming outright victory over Cranbourne Meadows (39 and 120) at Upper Beaconsfield. The Maroons declared their innings closed before the start of play, giving Kyle Gibbs (4/10) and leg-spinner Scott Pitcher (3/29) plenty of time to weave a spell over the disappointing Rebels. Chris Milne (51) and Shameera Weerasinghe (30) shared a 70-run stand for the fifth wicket and opener Wayne Diss (21) battled manfully -
Heinz sitting in box seat By RUSSELL BENNETT DANDENONG DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION TURF 1 THE weather gods didn’t take too kindly to DDCA Turf 1 cricket on the weekend, with only two of a possible five games getting underway. The sixth game of the round, Lyndale versus Buckley Ridges, was postponed on compassionate grounds following the tragic passing of Lyndale Turf 5 player Michael ‘Pup’ Clarke. Of the two that did begin on Saturday, Heinz Southern Districts and Dandenong West are in the box seat. Berwick won the toss and elected to bat first against HSD
at Reedy Reserve and openers Ryan Williamson (28) and Adam Watson (20) both got off to promising starts. But Williamson’s dismissal - the first of five by Michael Davies (5/37) - triggered a mini-collapse that saw the visitors slide from 0/48 to 5/65 and then 6/85. Only an unbeaten 47 from Ryan Crawford provided any real middle or lower order resistance as the Bears were dismissed for 149. Davies was the star with the ball, while Matt Downe also claimed 3/18. HSD will resume this week on 0/4. The North versus West derby, meanwhile, is locked in a fascinating position after the close of day one. Dandy West won the toss at Lois Twohig
Reserve and sent North Dandenong in, and the decision reaped immediate rewards as the home side was rolled for just 89 with skipper Nasrat Malikzada (20) and wicket keeperbatsman Declan Fowler (23) the only batsman to reach 20. Andrew Harry was the pick of the bowlers with 4/18, while Rajpal Dhillon claimed 3/34 and Peter Atkinson chimed in with 2/17. Ordinarily, with just 89 on the board in the first innings, the game would practically be all over. Not in this case, with the West stumbling badly to be 3/38 after 23 overs at the close of play. Skipper Matt Sofoulis is not out on 18 at the top of the order, while Clayton McCartney is the new batsman.

Fritz’s team holds strong CRANBOURNE BOWLS THE long hair has long gone but fabulous Fritz Helle and his “Love Love me do” team of John Stanley, Stan Myers and Peter De Lisle won by 13 shots which was enough to get Cranbourne 1 side home against Berwick by 8 shots. However it was a ‘Halloween Horror Story’ at home as side two went down by one shot again for the second week in a row, this time against Oakleigh. Perhaps a Cranbourne player walked under a ladder before the game, hey! The previously undefeated Women’s Division 1 side lost to Edithvale and once again sides three and four continued their losing streak. RESULTS FOR ROUND FIVE. SIDE 1 DIVISION 2 Cranbourne 80 defeated Berwick 72: F Helle 28-15, D Boggie 15-19, J Parker 19-23, and J Mulder 18-15. Cranny’s win under pressure CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS MIDWEEK Division 3 - It was always going to be a thrilling finish when the scores were tied with one rink still to play two ends. Ray Chapman’s team stood firm under pressure and scored the winning five shots. It was the only time Ray’s team was in front all day. Well done to everyone especially Karen Murray’s team - without their 12 shot win the last two ends would have meant nothing. Cranbourne RSL 53 def Narre Warren 48 S Brobyn, M Hodges, Y vd Wees, K Murray 23-11; R Bligh, C Butler, P Males, R Chapman 7-15; B Hall, D Hut, G Dore, J Spencer 13-22. Divison 4 -The RSL came crashing back to earth today with all rinks going down to a very strong Upwey/Tecoma team, especially at home where we rarely lose. The next round can't come quick enough so we can bounce back. Cranbourne RSL 47 lost to Upwey/Tecoma 71 H Reefman, D Muir, H Rogers, T Bonney 17-26; V Bonney, A Black, M Bobetic, J Black 12-22; P Campion, M Hogan, K Hickson, S Hickson 18-23.
SATURDAY PENNANT Division 2 - A week's a long time in bowls and after our first good win last week the RSL went to Elsternwick full of confidence. It was not enough, we won two rinks but fell short in the other ones, to go down by 10 shots. Bill Bradbury’s team did well winning by 12 shots. Cranbourne RSL 79 lost to Elsterwick Club 89 R Hansen, J Wylie, R Crawford, B Bradbury 28-16; J Black, G Dore, K Murray, K Hocking 21-19; R Bligh, F Scicluna, W Brannan, R Chapman 16-25; T Townley, M Hodges, Y vd Wees, N Fell 14-29. Division 5 - The RSL bounced straight back after their first loss last week to down a gallant Sandringham by 41 shots. All rinks won with Steve Hickson’s team doing the most damage winning by 24 shots. Enjoy the two week break team and keep up the good work. Division 8 - Team 3: Enjoyed the day off with Keysborough giving us a walkover. Team 4: In a close encounter Noble Park held on to defeat the RSL by just 4 shots. Cranbourne RSL 37 lost to Noble Park 41 D Muir, M Pearson, J Grant 18-17; J Hart, B Cook, A Underwood 19-24. With the Victorian Open starting next Saturday 7 November, the next game of bowls will be on Saturday 14 November. Enjoy the break.

Action revving up NYORA Raceway will blast off its new season this Saturday 7 November with the V8 bellow of the crowd favourite VSC Sprintcars. Added attractions include the Victorian Mini Sprints and the Boost 2 Drive series for Juniors in their standard saloons. The big boys and girls will compete in the Unlimited Sedans and Standard Saloons and the skid kids will also be out to play on the SSA Sprintcars are the pre-eminent division in dirt track speedway and the VSC Sprintcars have been a part of that for many, many years. They also bring a local flavour with many of the drivers being based in the Gippsland region such as Adam Greenwood, Shane Steenholdt, Mark Laity and others. Young Bobby Daly won the opening race of their new calendar so the majority of the drivers have had an early hit out to blow out any cobwebs. Stuart Barkway from Boost 2 Drive is a great supporter of both Nyora Raceway and Junior drivers and has again thrown his support behind the stars of tomorrow in the Standard Saloons. The neat thing about this series is the kids are driving full size sedans that are often shared by their fathers, mothers or siblings as the case may well be on Saturday 7 November. Bailey Perkins has run many laps around the Nyora bowl and will be looking for his next win. Mini Sprints will add more action to the fans of open wheeled winged racing with local aces Danny Milton and young Luke Hickson trying
Nyora Raceway will be the place to be this Saturday night as an exciting new season begins. Picture: CONTRIBUTED everything to dethrone last year’s stand-out racer Dave May. Veterans like Kevin Bomford and Jason Lynn will mix it up with rookie Andrew Burleigh and sophomore Will Van Der Ark. The Ripper Sticker Unlimited Sedans are a real mixed bag of performance and body style with every type of speedway sedan imaginable from Street Stocks, Standard Saloons, Super Sedans, Modified Production Sedans and Division II Hot Rods. Simon and Shona Bent are the local and club favourite father/ daughter combo and both are prepared to take on all comers. Simon has been kept from victory lane of late and is keen to get back to his former position of dominance at the Grundy Street Speedway. Jamie
Paull and Marcus Reddecliffe will have something to say about the Bents however. Brad Hill and Mark Miles have both tasted victory at Nyora in their Standard Saloons and will be looking for repeat performances over the likes of Aaron Price and Brendon Eames in some sure to be entertaining racing. The final part of the day’s action is the 1200cc junior sedans where kids from 12 to 16 years of age can blast around the bowl in relative safety learning skills that will suit them well once they hit the road. Ricky Cornwall will be looking for yet another Nyora victory while Seth Bent (the youngest of the racing trio) will tackle a hoard of Alexandra based juniors who are always tough no matter where they race.
It all adds up to a great evening of family fun at the quirky Nyora Raceway, where excellent viewing and exciting racing is just par for the course. Don’t forget to check things out at the all new website at www.nyoraraceway.com.au or on Facebook. Nyora Raceway is located on Grundy Avenue, Nyora. By DEREK OGDEN ANYBODY who thinks the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe is a GLE just with a slicked-up body stuck on can think again. This is a different beast altogether, molding the best of two segments, coupe with a sports utility vehicle. Having driven both models within 24 hours of each other I can attest to this. Three variants have been pencilled in for Australia. They are the GLE 350d 4Matic Coupe, selling for $121,900, plus on-road costs; the GLE 450 AMG 4Matic at $141,900 and the AMG GLE 63 S 4Matic for $198,900. Already with a series of successful coupes to the Mercedes name, the GLE Coupe joins the classic two-door C, E and SClass models and the four-door CLS and CLA-Class coupes. From the simplified, yet robust radiator grille, flanked by unique lighting set-up to sleek profile and twin five-spoke 21 or 22-inch wheels the GLE Coupe range stands alone from its SUV stablemate. The company says, with room for up to five occupants, it combines typical coupe attributes, such as sportiness, dynamism and agility with the confident presence, versatility and robustness of a typical sports utility vehicle. Added to this are the fine touches of luxury that continue to set the Benz apart but also unexpected bonuses such as the widest rear seat bench and the largest luggage space - 1650 litres - in its class. For the first time in this segment, MercedesBenz is also offering a fully electric extendable and retractable trailer coupling, which also features a trailer stabilisation electronic stability program. At the foot of the range is the six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine powered GLE 350d 4Matic, which drives through a ninespeed automatic. Power output is 190kW, while maximum torque of 620Nm is on tap from a mere 1600rpm. For an entry-level model, standard equipment is exceptional, with AMG body styling, Dynamic Select transmission modes, 4Matic permanent allwheel drive, Airmatic Air suspension, 21-inch AMG wheels, LED Intelligent Light System, Comand navigation, Easy-Pack automatic power tailgate, Harman Kardon Logic 7 14-speaker surround-sound system, Nappa leather upholstery and heated and electronically adjustable AMG Line sports front seats. The first AMG sports model to arrive in the Australian market, the GLE 450 AMG 4Matic Coupe, presents an attractive introduction to the sports car world and Mercedes’ performance arm. Making use of a six-cylinder bi-turbo petrol engine putting out 270kW of power and 520Nm of torque, the car races from zero to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds. In addition to

The GLE Coupe stands out from the Mercedes-Benz large SUV range. the standard equipment across the range, the GLE 450 AMG 4Matic Coupe also wears a panoramic sliding sunroof, AMG Line Nappa leather upholstery, 22-inch AMG Wheels, Active Curve System with anti-roll stabilisation and an Anti-Theft Protection package. The top of the range Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC Coupe benefits from the Mercedes-AMG ‘One man, One Engine’ philosophy, the stonking 5.5-litre V8 motor being put together by a single highly-trained technician. The result is that the GLE 63 S Coupe comes up with 430kW and 760Nm, which in conjunction with the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission, has the vehicle shooting from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds. A list of standard equipment includes AMG Driver’s Package, AMG Performance Exhaust, Air-Balance Package, digital TV tuner, luxury heated and ventilated multi-contour front seats in AMG Nappa leather. Ground-breaking powertrain apart, the newly designed Airmatic air suspension - available for the first time with the continuously variable damping system ADS Plus - ensures exceptionally stable driving. The damping system realigns itself depending on the driver’s preselected Dynamic Select mode. Operating conditions are monitored through a steering angle sensor, four turning angle sensors and driving speed from the ESP and brake pedal switch. The result is infinitely variable adjustment of damping for each wheel. Comfort mode calls up characteristics of a classic Mercedes-Benz saloon with relaxed, effortless cruising. Sport has the GLE Coupe morphing into a vehicle with sporty dynamics. The Dynamic Select Sport+ setting offers the driver added spice. Throttle response, gearchange strategy, ESP thresholds, steering power assist or the characteristic of the continuous damper adjustment exclusive to AMG: the system networks all the control systems, generating a wide variety of distinct driving experiences. All modes are displayed on the centrally positioned dashboard screen and are easy to operate via the Comand system knob. The Active Curve System, with active roll stabilisation, is

also part of the special sports systems that are activated when the driver selects Sport or Sport+. At the same time, the active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles raise the comfort to saloon level and compensate for even heavy, one-sided instability such as when driving over potholes. Thus, combined with the freshly configured Sports Direct-Steer system, seriously crumpled road conditions are easily ironed out. Mercedes’ state-of-the-art safety is standard throughout the GLE Coupe range with nine airbags in position, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Distronic Plus cruise control with Steering Assist and Stop and Go Pilot. Matching the accelerating ability, stopping the coupe is of premium quality with Pre-Safe Brake and Pre-Safe Plus helping to put on the anchors. Also coming to the aid of the driver are Crosswind Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, an Active Bonnet and an LED Intelligent Light System with Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus. An introduction to the GLE Coupe on the media launch less than auspicious, with a bump on the bonce welcoming my entry to the driver’s seat, the result of the vehicle's sleek, aerodynamic profile. A minor mishap, it did not happen again on repeated entries. All was forgiven, with the GLE Coupe reprising the pleasure gained from its wagon counterpart a day earlier, especially in the rorty aural contribution of the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4Matic.
