Just a super effort, kids

IT WAS ready, set, go for the Superkidz and Special Triathlon on Saturday as kids aged 7 to 13 ran, swam and rode their way through a child-only course. Encouraged to participate and have fun, kids set off from Chaplin Park into the Noosa River, before emerging up the sand and starting the cycle leg of the triathlon. A short run was the last leg of the triathlon, with spectators cheering on the competitors in both the Coates Hire Noosa Superkidz Triathlon and the Tingirana Noosa Special Triathlon. For the full run-down of the 2015 Noosa Triathlon and for more photos of our local “super kids” turn to pages 38 and 39.

Internet ‘super slow’ By JOLENE OGLE LOCAL home-based business owner Gail Rast has had enough of slow internet connections in Noosa, saying it’s hard enough to run a business let alone deal with a lack of internet service. Gail runs the Life’s a Feast cooking school in Noosaville and even though she lives just 4.5 kilometres from an internet exchange, she is currently trying to run her business

on a “super slow” ADSL connection that sometimes stops working altogether. When Gail signed up for her internet connection she was receiving ADSL2+ connection speeds, but was downgraded to ADSL1 by her internet provider without being notified and is unable to be upgraded as there are now no ports available. While Gail is now in a long-running battle with her internet provider to improve her service, she said in-

ternet speeds throughout the shire were unacceptable. “We may as well be living in the middle of nowhere,” she said. “I’m not the only one with this problem.” Gail said her internet speed had progressively slowed down over the past six months and her main concern was what would happen in another six months’ time. “My internet speed is progressively deteriorating,” she said.

“What will it be like in six months’ time? The demand on the network is so great, but we’re stuck with infrastructure that can’t handle it. I can only imagine it will get worse.” CCIQ Noosa president Peter Chenoweth said a lack of internet service was a real concern throughout the local business community. “We see this as a major issue for business and the community,” he said.

But, with the National Broadband Network still two years away, CCIQ Noosa is offering a possible solution to local internet issues. Our Community Broadband cofounders and directors Andy Whitmore and Steve Dunton originally addressed CCIQ Noosa members on 13 October to launch their internet service that offers faster internet speeds at a reasonable cost. Plastic cops a bagging from all sides COUNCIL is calling for better recycling and more of it, as they launch the Towards Zero Waste campaign. Taking recyclable rubbish out of the general rubbish bin is the main message from council as they launch the TZW campaign to coincide with National Recycling Week from 9 to 14 November. In keeping with the community jury’s recommendations, the first phase of the campaign is about New Life, Not Landfill, calling on residents to be mindful when separating their rubbish. To help educate residents on what can and can’t be recycled, council staff will be at National Recycling Week pop-up stalls through supermarkets across the shire, ready to answer questions. Magazines, aerosol cans, plastic food trays and clean pizza boxes are just some of the items that can now go into the recycle bin in addition to tin and aluminium cans, plastic bottles, cardboard and newspapers. Council’s waste and environmental health manager Wayne Schafer said a recent bin audit revealed 20 per cent of rubbish in Noosa’s general (red or dark green lid) rubbish bins, could be recycled into something new and should be in the yellow lid recycle bin.

Council's environment officer Cherie O'Sullivan demonstrates council's message to Noosa for National Recycling Week, 9 to 14 November. “Council estimates more than 2000 tonnes of recyclable items are going to landfill each year completely unnecessarily,” he said. “The audit also showed on average, five plastic bags are in every recycle bin. Plastic bags contaminate the recycle bin because they cannot be recycled and create major problems at the Materials Re-

covery Facility (MRF). “Plastic bags definitely belong in the red lid (or dark green lid) bin or back at the supermarket, and not in the recycling bin." According to the latest audit data, Noosa residents currently divert 17 per cent of rubbish from landfill by recycling. Council has established a target of 22 per cent by end 2016 and is

asking residents to please do their bit by recycling more, doing it better and keeping plastic bags out of the yellow lid bin. To find out more about National Recycling week, please visit www.recyclingweek.planetark. org/ and to find out more about Council’s Towards Zero Waste campaign visit www.noosa.qld. gov.au/recycling-waste-services.

Boy on fire horror IT HAS been a Halloween horror for the 14-year-old Teresa’s Catholic College student who was found alight on the doorstep of a Sunrise Beach home on Saturday night (31 October). The quick-thinking residents helped to put out the fire before the boy was airlifted to the Lady Cilento Hospital in a serious condition on Saturday night. The latest report states the boy has undergone surgery to release pressure from burns that affect 40 per cent of his body. With a recovery time of about six weeks and the boy still in a coma, a police spokesperson said they didn’t expect to talk to the boy until late this week or next week to find out what happened. Speculation is growing, but the police say they don’t yet know what led to the boy being alight. Police are calling for anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Coroner's finding on battery death A QUEENSLAND coroner has handed down 13 recommendations following an inquest into the death of local girl Summer Steer, who became the first child to die in Australia from swallowing a button battery in 2013. Summer died on 30 June 2013 after swallowing a lithium battery. The little girl was taken to Noosa hospital twice with a stomach ache but was sent home. When Summer was transferred

to Brisbane a battery was found lodged in her oesophagus, causing her death. Coroner John Hutton made 13 recommendations including for manufacturers of button-sized lithium batteries to make them safe if swallowed, warning signs on button battery products, sealing of button battery compartments, as well as a public awareness campaign on the dangers of lithium batteries.

Zombies in dance off MORE than 40 zombies and goblins took locals and visitors by surprise when they danced up a storm at the Pirate Park on Saturday. Leading the ghastly ghoul dance grew was local Zumba instructor Sheryl Bingham, who said the team had practiced for two months to get the dance just right. This is the second flash mob dance for the group who turned Noosa Main Beach into a sea of high-energy in May when they danced to raise funds for the Noosa Heads Seahorse Nippers program. This time the group hoped to raise $1500 to help local family the Laidlaws get a Smart Pup, which costs about $20,000, for their son Ziggy who is non-verbal autistic. Dancing to the song Thriller in

honour of Halloween, the group were able to exceed their fund-raising goal with an impressive $2145 donated on the day. “The participants were brilliant,” Sheryl said. “Thanks to local businesses sponsoring the event, the community buying raffle tickets and the participants paying to take part, we raised over $2000. “While we are very proud of our efforts this is only one tenth of the amount the family needs to have a Smart Pup trained for Ziggy ... I know this family still needs a great deal of money to make this a possibility for Ziggy.” If anyone would like to donate to

Kids are in court, but in a good way By JOLENE OGLE IT WAS an eye-opening day for the Year 11 health students of Sunshine Beach State High School when they visited the Noosa Magistrates Court last Friday (30 October). The visit to the court was part of the students' health studies curriculum, where they learn about domestic violence and the process of applying for a domestic violence order, among other social and health issues. Head of physical education, surfing and health Ms Janine Lahey said the visit took about six months to plan but was a very valuable experience for the students.

“It can be of some concern for students,” she said. “But it is a great opportunity for the students because the more you know the more you can be prepared to help others, or even in your own life. The students always come back with more questions.” The students visited the Noosa Magistrates Court to take part in a mock hearing alongside domestic violence liaison officer Senior Constable Mark Jones and police prosecutor Melissa Campbell. Year 11 Sunshine Beach State High School (SBSHS) student Jessie Smith said the visit to the courthouse was a bit daunting, but she learnt a lot about domestic violence.

“We learnt about domestic violence and how much of an impact it has,” she said. “We also went into the holding cell. It was really scary. But the experience certainly changes the way you think about domestic violence. It’s something that’s so hidden. Unless you learn about it, you don’t know about it.” Jessie said she now felt better equipped for identifying domestic violence in the future. “We have learnt about the different types of domestic violence and how to look out for the signs,” she said. “I feel much better equipped for the future.”

The Sunshine Beach High students take part in a courtroom role play.

Internet ‘super slow’ From Page 1 With six live sites currently operating throughout the Sunshine Coast, the internet service company is calling for expressions of interest from Noosa residents and business owners to gauge whether there is the support for their company to build new infrastructure that will offer fast, wireless internet in Noosa. Andy said the response so far had been overwhelming with interest from most regions in the shire including Noosa Heads and Sunrise Beach, through to the hinterland. “There are a lot of Noosa businesses suffering,” Andy said. “With our service we will be able to increase internet speeds exponentially.” But the company needs 200 residents or business owners to commit to the new service before infrastructure is built to ensure the project is viable. An information meeting will be held at The J from 5.30pm tonight (Thursday, 5 November) for anyone interested in learning more about the Community Broadband service. Hosted by CCIQ Noosa, the information night is free for members and $10 for non-members. Bookings can be made by visiting www.noosa.cciq.com.au.

Veterans help us remember THE Vietnam Veterans' Association is offering locals 30 chances to remember those who have fallen in conflicts throughout history. As part of Remembrance Day, the VVA will sell 30 handmade white crosses decorated with a poppy for only $3 to help raise funds for the association. VVA member Bruce Wilson says anyone who wants to buy a white cross can write the name of a loved one who has served onto the cross and it will be placed in a sandbox at the Tewantin Noosa RSL cenotaph for the Remembrance Day memorial service. Mr Wilson said all funds

raised through the sale of the white crosses would go towards funding events and programs to help veterans reintegrate back into the community, as well as help support local charities and causes. The VVA will have a stall outside Dan Murphys, Mary Street, Noosaville, and Bendigo Bank, Poinciana Ave, Tewantin, on Monday 9 November and Tuesday 10 November. The group will be selling the white crosses plus other merchandise from 8am to 5pm at the Bendigo Bank and from 9am to 5pm at Dan Murphys.

You’re in safe hands Ron Lane's

people THE Impact Boxing Academy of Cooroy is yet another relatively unknown success story, one of the many that exist within the boundaries of our community. Perhaps one of the most pleasing aspects of all is that the Academy revolves mainly around our youth. It is now ten years since Mark Evans started the Academy and commenced coaching; and he happily acknowledges that its success has been due mainly to the support of the local people. Nestled in amongst the trees in Cudgerie Estate, is the small but well-equipped gym with everything that young athletes or the older groups, just wanting to keep fit, could want. The atmosphere in the gym is good - friendly and inviting. A motto on the wall carries a very honest message; Pain is Temporary - Pride is Forever. “It all began ten years ago,” said Mark, “and now it is going so well that it really has become my life. I have a regular stable of twelve fighters, and over the years, our achievements are something that the fighters their families and our support group can take pride in.’’ Apart from family and work, for Mark who is a painting contractor by trade, fitness boxing and

Sam Cameron-Hands will be one to watch over the coming years, along with a host of talented youth in Noosa. martial arts have been his life. “I came from a family of boxers so it was only natural that I followed on having some 32 fights boxing as a Light Middleweight.’’ Prior to his boxing Mark spent ten years in martial arts training at the Tong Long Kung Fu School in Nambour; seven of which were spent as an instructor. When the training sessions start the discipline required for success is ever present, not over the top, but solid. As one watches Marks methods and approach to his young charges it is easy to understand why he holds the position of Head Coach for the Queensland team. Recently he travelled to St Petersburg in Russia for the World Junior Championships as the Home

Coach and proud to say one of his boxers, Sam Cameron-Hands, was also on the team. “Despite not coming home with a medal we were happy,” said Mark. “It was a great experience and the standard was very high. We learnt a lot.’’ For Sam, his years training with Mark are really starting to pay dividends. After returning from Russia he had a week home then along with his Academy gym mate James Beazley, it was off to Europe as a member of the 14 man Queensland Team to fight Germany for the Brandenburg Cup. Each member was nominated to have three fights with the tournaments being held in three dif-

ferent towns in Germany; Weiser, Munster and Cologne. With just one day to shake off the jet-lag it was all on and happy to relate Queensland came home winning 2-1 in the three tournament challenge. Sam won two of his three fights with James losing two and a bye in his third. Despite his two losses James's performance against two highly world-rated opponents drew high praise from his coaches. “On November 14,” said Mark, “we will be taking a Queensland team of 14 boxers to Perth for a Queensland vs Western Australia tournament and proud to say that young Ben Cameron-Hands, Byron McKeown, Brock Shelly and James Beazley, four of our boxers from the Academy are in the team.” Mark has also been appointed head coach. Ben Cameron-Hands, younger brother to Sam, is not only a hot prospect as a boxer with 54 fights for 48 wins, but at 15 years of age is the type of athlete that is a credit to not only his family and coach, but also to Queensland boxing. “He is a good lad,” said Mark, "easy to train, listens and has an incredible attitude to the discipline required for boxing.” On meeting this young lad, affectionately known to his gym mates as The Bulldog, he has a presence beyond his years, with a firm hand shake and eye contact that never wavers during discussions. He's one of Our People.

I DON'T know about you but I am still getting over last weekend’s Triathlon, and a big congratulations to all involved. I made a statement in last week’s column that by having the swim in the ocean, it would only enhance the reputation of the event. Sure there was some terrific PR up to and including the day, but it's from here on with the added worldwide exposure. November 15th will give us locals the first taste with the festival highlights on the 7 National Network. I was very proud to host the beach start and was simply amazed

by the athletes and their supporters who joined me on the beach. I can only imagine what the worldwide audience will think when they see over 6000 swimmers in the crystal clear and safe ocean. For an Olympic's perspective, it was a fantastic hit out for Ladies' winner Ashley Gentle, but for unknown American, Joe Maloy, victory was as sweet as its gets. The 28-year-old has been in the US Elite squad since 2100 but Sunday's win is an early Christmas present. And to think he was going to nominate for the Age Group and not the Elites, even makes his win more impressive. Just think, when he goes home, the race coverage in America will be even more poignant. Thankfully the weather was great, and the beach spectators got to have a drink with Noosa’s next

Mayor Hey Bill Watson. I wonder if my mate Michael Egan from Pomona was down watching the action. Probably not, he would have just waited for Councillor Wellington to give him a call with a run down. In Mr Egan’s recent letter to editor (22 October), he first questions what goes on in my head, and then asks is this man on drugs? Then to add weight to the personal attack, he tells us of his 12 years' community experience and how refreshing it is that Mr Wellington returns calls and comes to meetings. Hey Michael, Tony is a paid councillor and is required to answer phones and go to AGMs and meetings, especially if in his electorate. I have been around the Coast and Noosa for a little longer then 12 years, and the first time

I heard or ever saw your ‘intelligence, professional and attention to detail’ would-be mayor was just after he was first into the Coast Abbot-led council. He was front and centre at most of the big event functions enjoying the proceedings. Most of the events were already well established long before Tony was elected, and most of them were in the Sunshine Coast. And to suggest that Sandy Bolton is a 'cabinet secretary’ is an insult. I suggest you give her a call instead of Tony, you might be surprised of the depth of experience she has to offer. On a brighter note, congratulations to Noosa Yacht and Rowing Paul Blundell for his nomination at this year's Q-Sports Awards in November. A terrific honour for a hard-working local sports official. Until next time.

NPA FRIDAY FORUM WHAT makes a cuckoo cuckoo? Arguably the most recognised bird call in the world is that of the common or European cuckoo. The “cuckoo” sound of the call has given the name to the bird (onomatopoeic), which in turn has its name associated with other unrelated birds, insects and even a type of clock - also humans. In common usage the word has become synonymous with “silly and crazy”. But is that a fair description of the bird? Kon Hepers is the guest speaker at Friday Environment Forum on 6 November when he will compare the taxonomy and lifestyle of a selection of these birds, particularly the Australian species. Be part of the audience at the Noosa Parks Association Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville, on 6 November. The forum starts at 10.30am, with coffee available from 10am. If you want to learn more about bird behaviour, join interpretive birding in Wallace Park with Valda starting at 8.30am in the carpark. For more information visit www.noosaparks.org. au All welcome.

Now that’s a send-off, all right A POPULAR Noosa Springs couple turned their annual farewell party into a fund-raiser for a significant international health program last Sunday. Clive and Dawn Hesketh in association with Rotary Noosa Daybreak hosted the charity day, with all proceeds going to the End Polio Now program. Over $6000 was raised for this great cause.

End Polio Now is an initiative of Rotary International. A Sunshine Coast local, Sir Clem Renouf, rose to become president of Rotary International in 1978, and in that year was inspired to bring all Rotarians together to fight polio. Rotary joined forces with world health organisations in pursuit of the ambitious goal to rid the world of polio. With a 99 percent reduction in the

incidence of polio since the program was launched, that goal is now in sight. In more recent times, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has become a major donor, and will match two-for-one, all donations from Rotary to the program until 2018. Donations to the program can be made on www. endpolio.org

Rotary Noosa Daybreak members helped raise over $6000 at their annual farewell event.

Working out that old will IF the idea of creating a will seems complicated, the Suncoast Community Legal Service is offering two free sessions to the public to explore Will Power. The two sessions to be held in Noosa this month are aimed at educating residents with practical and helpful information and suggest how they may avoid some of the common pitfalls that can occur when it comes to creating a will. The sessions will be delivered by experienced solicitors Fiona Allen and Andrew Markert respectively, who will explore the law around wills and other end-of-life matters. In particular, the session will address why we need a will, what happens if you die without one, what is probate, can a will change after a death and what role do enduring powers of attorney play. The first session will be held at the Noosa Library on Monday 16 November from 1pm, followed by a session at Cooroy Library on Wednesday 18 November from 10am. Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning Noosa Library on 5329 6555.

The stunning Peregian Beach is the perfect place to spend a warm summer afternoon.

Buzzing Beach village THERE is always something to do at the Peregian Beach village from live music to markets, a stroll on the beach to dining out, and everything in between. Adding to the weekend line-up is the Peregian Beach Hotel’s Sunday Songfest to be held the fourth Sunday of every month, perfectly positioned between the Peregian Beach Markets held on the first and third Sunday of the month

and the famous Peregian Originals held on the second Sunday of the month. One day is never long enough to spend browsing Peregian Beach’s boutique stores and enjoying a meal with friends. If you haven’t been to the village before or it’s been a while, now is a great time to get back and see what’s happening in the buzzing Peregian Beach village.

Boardroom feel down our Alley By TANIA PHILLIPS IMAGINE a place in Peregian Beach where the food is relaxed and tasty and the music is cool and local. That’s the feel that Ian Withers is hoping to create The Boardroom Cantina (opened seven months ago) and his new Dumpling Alley. “My dream is to bring more young-minded people to Peregian - it needs an Ocean Street, Maroochy vibe,” he said. “The challenge is to change the perspective in terms of the way Peregian is viewed - that can only be achieved by wel-

coming change. “We showcase young local musos, we have ice cold Asahi on tap now, our new menu starts next week and dumpling alley opens in a week or so, offering a dim sum style cafe menu.” He said the aim was to provide live music every Friday and Saturday along with an affordable, constantly changing menu with a cool young vibe, tapped into the surf culture with live television for main events. The Boardroom Cantina offers an array of food with the current menu including a mix of street food snacks from

popcorn chicken fried chicken drumettes to Jalapeno Poppers - battered jalapeno chillies stuffed with cream cheese, salsa and sour cream as well as Tacos and cha sui pork as well as burgers, burritos and chimichangas. “Dumpling alley is a salute to my step-grandma who was Chinese and who was an inspiration to me,” Ian said. Peregian Beach’s The Boardroom Cantina is open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and Friday and Saturday for dinner while Dumpling Alley will be open from 11am to 3pm every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Peregian Originals free community concerts are held on the second Sunday of every month.

Originals on show - live WHAT started as a few live gigs in the park almost 20 years ago has turned into one of the region’s best loved live concert events. Peregian Originals has been showcasing local and national talent for more than a decade and draws a crowd of over 1000 during its peak season throughout summer. The monthly gig is held in the park next to the former Sunshine Beach Surf Club from 1pm to 5pm, and is run by a dedicated group of volunteers.

The family friendly event is driven by community and local business donations, and has seen some impressive performances throughout its long history. Triple J Unearthed artists The Dawn Chorus, local lads The Hi-Boys, Carl Wockner, The Flumes and many more talented performers have graced the grass stage at the Peregian Originals concerts. Last year, the Orginals expanded into a major music festival held in September

with headliners Ash Grunwald, Sticky Fingers and Kingswood drawing more than 4000 people to the inaugural event. This year, the Originals Music Festival will be held this weekend, Saturday 7 November, and will feature Regurgitator, Sticky Fingers and OKA among a stellar line-up. The Peregian Originals is simply another great reason to visit the Peregian Beach village precinct. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Lucky Star shines on for Vicki HAPPY customers make Vicki’s Star shine in Peregian. Nearly six years ago when Vicki Cooper launched her Star real estate agency in the heart of Peregian Beach, she had a very clear goal in mind. Although she was already a very successful sales agent with many years' experience, Vicki wanted to do more than simply sell a lot of property. In her own words, she “always hated the way so many people talked about real estate agents - as if we were all crooks and con artists - and I was determined that, at Star, we would do everything we could to change that image - one client at a time.” “Over the years I have met lots of honest, very hard-working agents who had had their customer’s best interests at heart. But unfortunately it’s the ones who don’t do the right thing that seem to attract all the attention and give our business a bad name,” she said. “Selling real estate is a very competitive business so people are sometimes tempted to try and get an edge by over-promising or indulging in deceptive behaviour. My approach from

Vicki Cooper of Star Noosa real estate.

Andrew Robinson

day one has been to always tell people what I believe they need to know rather than simply what they want to hear even though this sometimes costs us a potential client. "And it’s the same with our approach to marketing. We often make strong claims. But only if we can support them with facts and independent evidence.” Vicki said her business has thrived on the word of mouth recommendations she has received from scores of satisfied clients and customers, and the results certainly speak for themselves. Star, the small independent startup, has become a recognised strong, local brand. The agency is now a clear number one in a marketplace where the major competitors are three of the biggest national franchise groups. As well as the Star sales team, Star also manages residential property management and services clients along the coast from Marcoola to Noosa. Star Noosa is located at Shop 2, 224 David Low Way, Peregian Beach. Phone 5471 3688 to speak with Vicki or her team.

The Dental Centre Peregian Beach offers a friendly team of staff who love to welcome new and existing clients to their David Low Way clinic. On hand is Dr Sarah Higham who brings almost 25 years of general practice experience to the clinic and a love for treating families. Having two children of her own, Dr Higham knows how hard it can be to bring little ones to a dental clinic. However, she takes great pride in making a trip to the dentist both fun and comfortable for the whole family. Dr Higham is also one of a small number of dentists in Australia who is qualified to provide intravenous sedation for dental treatment. Having preformed over 3000 sedations she is very experienced and welcomes anxious patients to the practice at Peregian Beach. Dr Higham is joined by Dr Andrew Robinson, who was raised in the hinterland town of Cooroy. Where do they go? I HAVE read the report and support all recommendations apart from active dispersal which appears to be problematic, expensive and not proven to alleviate the problem. I would also like to suggest an option from outside the square to be researched and evaluated. My suggestion is that Noosa Council allocates environment levy funds to use tagging to further investigate where the flying foxes go and why. (Could be done in collaboration with the research being undertaken by the Sunshine Coast Council). Once sufficient information is gathered and collated, it could be used to investigate the planned planting of flying fox host trees on their flight path to provide a more ideal roost than those which they currently use. This would be a concerted long-term effort to continually increase host trees in areas away from human habitation which they could find on their current flight paths, hopefully luring them to choose to move their roosts. Mark Rodriquez, Tewantin.

Voting rights I MUST wholeheartedly agree with Nick Smit (Noosa Today, 29 October). Nick is calling for voting rights at Noosa local elections, as do we. We all but live in Noosa full-time these days. On average we are here five days per week. We support the local businesses and restaurants wherever we can, even taking groceries bought here, back to Brisbane. We have aimed and worked toward the goal of living here for many years. We love Noosa, we contribute, we pay rates and the same as Nick Smit would, we also pay $200 extra in our rates for no reason, other than our town home isn’t what is deemed to be our “principal place of residence". Even though we are here the majority of the time. The reasoning behind the surcharge seems to be as simple as “They do it because they they can". Yet even though we aren’t classed to be residents we pay all the same extra fees attached to our rates that residents do. This is a clear case of having one's cake and eating it too, on

I had questioned Mayor Playford about this last year and was told that the Noosa Budget was to be reviewed last June and some changes in charges would be looked at. Of course this particular one was not part of the review. At the very least we should be able to have a voice at voting time. Noosa’s future concerns ALL ratepayers. Martina Gaynor, Sunrise Beach.

Not so amazing WOOLWORTH'S ‘amazing’ new rewards card scheme is in my view simply an attempt to pull the wool over our eyes while simultaneously fleecing us. If you read the small print - and who does? - you’ll find, hidden in the exceptions and contradictions, that to get $10 credit on your next grocery bill you must either restrict your purchases to designated ‘orange ticket’ items, probably house brands with a high profit margin, or take your chances in their great mystery lottery in the sky: offers on your favourites. I quote from their leaflet: you’ll get offers on items you buy and things we think you’ll like - these won’t always be marked in store. A second appeal to the instant scratchie fans is their ‘scan to win’ feature. I also note they are careful to exclude online purchases, other WW subsidiaries and more significantly fuel outlets from their ‘$10 off your next purchase’ offer. One apparent contradiction is that while purchases at Woolworths supermarkets will no longer earn Qantas frequent-flyer points, you still need to be a linked Qantas Frequent Flyer member to be eligible for a WW rewards card. For me it simply doesn’t fly. Brand loyalty and the convenience of doing all your shopping at the same time and location have long been key cards in the double-bluff poker game played with consumers by the Big Two - Coles and Woolies. Now Woolies bring in a new stacked deck - our propensity for gambling as well as the social cohesion factor - the feeling of being in a club that goes with your exclusive WW card. What will Coles come up with in reply, I wonder? As far as we’re concerned, whenever we can we’ll shop at their more honest competitors such as Aldi and IGA, or even better, support our local fresh food markets and independent retailers. Nice try, Woolies. Why don’t you try competing instead on genuine value, variety and guaranteed quality right across the price range? Noel Bird, Boreen Point.

TONY Abbott’s advice to Europe is turn back the refugees. I would like him to explain where his demarcation line should be, or maybe his version of a Berlin Wall. Surely a person with his Rhodes Scholar education and time as Prime Minister of Australia he must realise they are not trying to turn back a village. With that answer to this terrible catastrophe and lack

Now, 20 years later, the Pomona and District Community House (PCH) is known throughout the Noosa Shire and the Sunshine Coast as being a leader among community centres. The event will be held on Saturday 7 November, at Lawson Shed, Memorial Avenue, of compassion for his fellow man we are certainly better off without his leadership. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.

Why so slow? WE ARE relatively new to this area, only moving here 18 months ago. We live to the west of Cooroy and I travel the Cooroy-Noosa Road about three or four times per week to and from work. Can anyone explain to me the common occurrence of vehicles travelling this road very rarely go faster than 80km/h when the speed limit is 100. I realise that at either end i.e. Before Swift Drive and then around Sunrise Road the speed limit is 80km/h (or less) but in between it's 100 - yet everyone seems to do 80 all the way and sometimes considerably less than 80. Am I missing something? It is rather frustrating especially when someone is sitting on 70km/h and there is little opportunity to pass. Michelle Burton, Carters Ridge.

Climate re-education THE new guvmint has decided that the $4 million, ‘Bang for your bucks’, dedicated to the ‘consensus centre’ to re-educate Australians about silly climate change ideas will be scrapped. It believes that “the funds could be better utilised elsewhere”. Any ideas of how $2 billion paid to the big polluters could be “better utilised elsewhere”, giving an explosive ‘bang for your bucks’? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

Not their problem THE question of whether Noosa Council should support same-sex marriage (Noosa Today, 29 October) is a tough one for councillors given the ultimate decision lies elsewhere (with Federal Parliament) and that councillors’ personal views on the matter are rightly their own and they should be under no obligation to disclose them. At the same time, many of our LGBTI friends understandably want to see public affirmation of their absolute equality in our community. However symbolic such an avowal may be, the desire for equality is real enough and seeking an expression of community support is a fair thing to do. It seems to me that this would be a useful question to put to a Noosa community jury, this being essentially a matter of community values and readiness for change. It is surely within the ambit of Noosa Council, through the jury process, to ask residents whether they would agree with a public expression of community support for LGBTI rights, including the right to equality in marriage. I feel sure the Noosa community would engage this question with enthusiasm and that the jury process would operate effectively in this context. Thus armed with a considered community view, councillors could be guided in a

Pomona, from 9.30am to 1pm. The family fun day will offer a day of free fun including face painting, a sausage sizzle, jumping castle and lots of demonstrations, plus live entertainment from the Billy T Bush Band. decision about whether the council should or should not express support, on behalf of the community, for equality in marriage. Keith Jackson AM, Noosaville.

Plastic response NOOSA Community Biosphere Association would like to thank our great Noosa residents and 'Biosphere citizens’ for their overwhelming support of our 'Ban the Plastic Bag’ campaign. Thanks to you we have exceeded our goal of 1000 signatures for the month of October; we achieved nearly 1200! Meeting with many residents, one thing is clear - we do not want nonbiodegradable plastic bags in Noosa. We also have received letter of support commitments from several community associations, and our state MP Glen Elmes has thrown his support behind the campaign. Banning non-biodegradable plastic bags in Noosa Shire has the capacity to reduce the burden on our landfills, increase the ability to protect our wildlife, limit the harmful effects on marine life and save on the costs of waste management. As Noosa Shire’s inclusion as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve will be entering the 10-year review process, a ban on non-biodegradable plastic bags should be a focus for Noosa Council to help support and retain the Biosphere recognition. Our council can lead the way for a state-wide ban on plastic bag use. Yes, we can. Banning non-biodegradable plastic bags is good for the Noosa economy and the environment. John Wood, Vice-president NCBA.

Under attack AS A 70-year-old person who cares for a disabled son, I would like to remind Joe Hockey that he attacked pensioners, the disabled and the sick in both his budgets. The rorts for the rich, he left untouched. Ambassador to the USA, I would like to make him Ambassador to Mars and bring forward the launch date. Bob Taylor, Tewantin.

Scrambling DESPITE the need for a quarterly update, the usual Financial Report was not included in last month’s Planning and Organisation Committee Meeting. However after speculation there was a hastily cobbled verbal update by Director Martin Drydale at the following General Committee Meeting (19 October). He claimed the 12 per cent funding for capital works would be increased to an allocation of 43 per cent by end November. However, considering last financial year’s completion rate for budgeted capital works was 63 per cent and only 0.3 per cent for July and 3 per cent for August (should be about 16 per cent YTD), it’s likely the result for September was similarly dismal. Allocating funds is no substitute for completing works. John Lobb, Peregian Springs. noosa.starcommunity.com.au

The rental markets from Gympie south to the Gold Coast and west to Toowoomba are largely at almost historically tight levels, with some parts of the Sunshine Coast registering less than one per cent vacancy.

“We’re seeing strong demand for rental properties in these areas and while a small level of this demand is seasonal, it does mean good news for investors who have certainty around finding tenants for their properties,” she said. Brisbane continued its long-term trend with a vacancy rate of 2.8 per cent, which was still in the healthy range. “We continue to see strong demand for dwellings in the Brisbane market and despite some commentators who suggest that we are facing a glut the data tells a different story,” Ms Mercorella said. “New apartments in Brisbane are reportedly being snapped up by investors and owner-occupiers, although the vacancy

Ms Mercorella said agents were reporting rental incentives were being offered to secure a tenant. “Asking rental prices are also said to be softening in response to the level of supply, however it is evident that the tenant demand is still there,” she said. The Gold Coast dropped from 2.3 per cent to 1.7 per cent, while the greater Sunshine Coast area recorded a drop from 1.6 per cent to 1.3 per cent. The Fraser Coast recorded a small dip from 3.8 per cent to 3.7 per cent, reflecting a trend towards a healthier investor market. Group fitness across board THE Noosa Leisure Centre (NLC) takes its commitment to the community’s well-being seriously. Its comprehensive group fitness program offers classes for all ages, abilities - and genders. Centre co-ordinator Cathy Simon said the emphasis had always been on seniors, but was encouraged to see the recent increase in the number of males attending classes. “Men, who tend to have a reputation for neglecting their health, are starting to enjoy the many benefits of exercising in a group of likeminded people,” she said. “With professional and motivating instructors, the support and mateship of other men and results to boot, the guys are coming back for more.” The rewards of exercise are well-known, and it is not just the body that profits. Even though weight loss, diabetes and blood pressure control and the assistance in the prevention of chronic diseases are among the drawcards, studies have shown that aspects such as the social atmosphere and increase in endorphins after exercise also had a positive impact on the mental health of subjects. “Activities at the Noosa Leisure Centre that appeal to an increasing number of men are indoor bowls, table tennis and badminton, but they also enjoy other classes such as boxfit, Pilates fusion and body moves,” Ms Simon said. “We would love to see more males trying out our classes. The ladies and other gentlemen who regularly participate invite all guys out there to join in and make the most of the health advantages of taking part in our group fitness program.” Group fitness participant Tony King said he had been to a number of fitness classes over his 69 years and Al’s boxfit classes at NLC were the best he had ever been to.

Group Fitness Boxfit participant Tony King and instructor Al Gray. “In fact all the instructors and staff there are very caring and helpful always offering that personal service you rarely get these days,” he said.

Peter Jack, another male participant, said seniors of all abilities, all shapes and sizes come along and exercise together. “We have a lot of fun,” he said.

Pension guide will show you the way FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss has released an updated edition of the Age Pension Guide. Mr Truss said the guide was popular among pensioners because it explained the terms and conditions that applied to the age pension as simply as possible. “The age pension rules can be confusing and complicated for many people. This guide is designed in an easy to use format to help pensioners understand their entitlements,” Mr Truss said. “It also reassures pensioners that the age pension will continue to increase twice per year, as it has done in the past when payment rates are updated on 20 March and 20 September. Pensioners are also better off because they continue to receive the carbon tax compensation even though Labor’s carbon tax has been abolished - saving the average household $550 a year.“Income and asset tests, and deeming and other provisions are also adjusted from time to time, which can affect the amount of assistance that pensioners are entitled to receive, so it is important that people have access to the latest information about the support that is available and where it is available from. “The guide also provides useful information about a range of other issues relating to pensions, including the pension bonus and work bonus schemes, the carer payment and allowance, as well as health and discount cards that are available to pensioners.” Pensioners in Wide Bay who are on Mr Truss’s mailing list should receive their guide in the post in the coming days. But for those who aren’t, the guide is available free of charge and can be ordered by telephoning 1300 301 968 or through www. warrentruss.com.

Settle in for a night of magical performances at the Noosa Art Theatre's production of Side by Side by Sondheim.

On side with Sondheim NOT content to coast on the success of bringing Opera Australia’s “The Magic Flute” to the Sunshine Coast, Noosa Long Weekend Festival director Ian Mackellar is back on centre stage once again, this time as director of Noosa Arts Theatre’s production of “Side by Side by Sondheim”. For Stephen Sondheim fans, the revue “Side by Side by Sondheim” is a retrospective of loved musical numbers by one of Broadway’s greatest composers. Sondheim’s songs, as the narrator explains, deal primarily with the theme of relationships and with New York City. In Noosa Arts Theatre’s production, snippets from the Sondheim musicals West Side Story, Follies, Pacific Overtures, A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum, A little Night Music and Company have been carefully and lovingly pieced together under the musical directorship of Simon Russell-Baker. “Sondheim’s music is very emotionally driven and his lyrics are touching, very clever and witty. Even though some of the songs were written decades ago, they are

Beating those allergies Allergies and intolerances can not only make life difficult socially, but can also wreak havoc with your health. Noosa naturopath Yolanda Falivene of Noosaville Natural Health Centre shares her tips for how to shake allergies and intolerances. Organika: A one-stop shop for all organic, health conscious and eco-friendly products.

An organic one-stop shop A ONE-STOP shop for all organic, health conscious and eco-friendly products? That’s how the new owners of Organika in Noosaville see the store. David and Gayle Rogers, who took over a few weeks ago say Organika carries all the staples you need for everyday life from cleaning products and make-up through to (in a few weeks) organic wines. And with new owners on board they are re-launching and offering a wide range of items to suit all needs. Organika has coffee and

food but it is much more than that according to Gayle. “We cater for vegans, paleo and people with food allergies - we have a big range of flours from buckwheat and coconut flour,” she said. “Our cafe is a just a small part of what we do.” There is plenty of fresh produce including several varieties of cheese catering for different needs (including vegans) as well as coconut ice-cream and other sugar-free and dairy-free alternatives. “We have lunchbox items as well as bamboo nappies and other eco-friendly biode-

gradable nappies, supplement supplies and super foods. “And our prices are good we try to keep the staples at a price people can afford.” She said if you needed it, chances were you would find it at Organika with other stock including hair dyes, sunscreens (without the nasties), candles and even bamboo underwear. And don’t forget their bulk section with nuts and grains, and a huge range of pastas. Find them at Shop 2, 3 Gibson Road, Noosaville open Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm, Saturday from 7am5pm and Sunday 7am to 4pm.

FEELING fatigued? Bloated after eating? Itchy eyes and sneezing? Headaches or just can’t shake that cold? There is a staggering increase in the number of people becoming more allergic or intolerant to foods and the environment recently, with Australia having among the highest prevalence of allergic disorders in the developed world. In fact, allergic diseases have more than doubled in western countries in the last 25 years. Nevertheless, having an allergy or intolerance doesn’t have to ruin your life. Understanding and treating the underlying causes and contributing factors concurrently with treating symptoms are important to long-term management. Genetic predisposition plays a role in developing symptoms. However, not all family members develop issues and there are numerous triggers which can precipitate allergic reactions or intolerances in anybody. Viral infections impair the immune system so that allergies are more likely to develop in the future.

Break free of allergies and intolerances. Intestinal integrity and healthy gut flora are vital to immunity. “Gastro bugs”, alcohol, and preservatives in foods are just a few examples of how we compromise gut health. With a damaged gut wall,

we have a reduced ability to produce certain immunoglobulins (or antibodies) which prevent allergic responses. Food molecules pass through the gut wall triggering allergies or intolerances so that sinus, eczema and asthmatic symptoms can actually be the result of food intolerance, not environmental allergies. Nutritional deficiencies caused by stress, malabsorption or a poor diet can also reduce our ability to fight viruses and allergens, and detoxify from environmental pollutants. Fortunately, allergies and intolerances need not cause you any more discomfort or embarrassment. At Noosaville Natural Health Centre, Yolanda uses modern diagnostic equipment including the 3-D body scan to determine underlying causes of the problem. With Bicom Bioresonance Therapy, allergies, food intolerances and the effects of bacteria or viruses can be desensitised and compromised organs treated, facilitating a return to good health. MORE than 50 women dressed in pink, ate pink cupcakes and raised vital funds for breast cancer research at the Handmade in Noosa Pink-a-licious High Tea on Friday 30 October. Held at the Noosa Boathouse, guests enjoyed the stunning views and delicious sweet treats while helping raise funds for a worthy cause with a range of raffle prizes donated by Handmade in Noosa members and local businesses. Handmade in Noosa member Natasha Wenke organised the event with her sister Talia Gittel, who is the event manager of Noosa Boathouse. In a touching speech, Natasha said the sisters started fundraising for breast cancer research in 2010 after their aunty was touched by the disease. Sadly, the girl’s mother who lives more than 1600km away was also diagnosed with cancer. “We were counting the money we had raised (at a breast cancer event) when we got the call,” Natasha said. “Mum said she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She lived 1600kms away so we couldn’t run and be with her, to hug her.” The girl’s mum is now a breast cancer survivor and her struggle with the disease has empowered Natasha and Talia to continue their fund-raising efforts for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. If you would like to donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, visit www.nbcf.org.au.

Club is raising the bar THE beautiful Noosa hinterland is all about the outdoors, fresh air and sunshine. Locals and visitors to the busy little town of Cooroy can now enjoy fresh air, sunshine and a view of the village while relaxing with a delicious cafe treat at the Cooroy RSL. The popular RSL Club now offers open-air seating with a pleasant garden backdrop; the perfect addition to the club’s recently renovated open-air lounge, offering the best compromise between restaurant comfort and an alfresco feel. Cooroy RSL offers an excellent full restaurant and cafe menu, daily Chef’s specials, budget family specials, delicious sweet treats, fresh scones baked in-house and the best coffee in town. Manager Tina Mayfield said she was proud of the recent improvements to the club and was keen to welcome everyone to come along and experience the excellent service and delicious restaurant and cafe menus. “The feedback from our members and guests has been fantastic,” she said. “The open-air lounge and alfresco area are proving to be very popular especially with patrons looking for afternoon tea or a light snack when other cafes are closing for the day.” Cooroy RSL is open seven days a week from 10am until late and has the best seats in town for the feature event of the year, Christmas in Cooroy. The lighting of the Christmas

Classy Lady owner and event organiser Lorraine Kenway, right, with Santa's Classy Helper, Christine Barker, at last year's event.

Classy helpers for Christmas FOR many local families Christmas planning and preparations are well underway, but there are many Noosa families who won’t be able to enjoy Christmas this year due to financial hardship. Whether it’s losing a job or suffering from a severe injury or illness, there are many reasons local families may find it hard to make Christmas special this year. But Santa’s Classy Helpers have been busy all year collecting donations for their annual store at The J, where more than 300 local families were assisted last year.

Noosa Classy Lady owner Lorraine Kenway launched the community charity and together with her tribe of Classy Helpers, they have helped hundreds of local families enjoy Christmas. Donations are collected throughout the year at morning teas where attendees are asked to bring new items such as cleaning products, hygiene products and toys for kids. Then, every December, Lorraine and her team of dedicated volunteers set up a popup store at the J where families that have been referred can come along and, along

with a shopping assistant, pick up everything they need to get through the holiday season for free. Santa’s Classy Helpers are yet to announce the date of the pop-up shop but anyone who would like to help can still donate items to the charity which is in need of new children’s clothing, pillows, toilet paper, long-life food and personal hygiene and cleaning products. Drop your donations into Classy Lady boutique at shop2, 1 Gibson Road, Noosaville.

Triple Minx take to the stage at the awards night.

Fitting farewell for musicians ST TERESA'S Catholic College at Noosaville have honoured their talented musicians at a glittering music awards night at The J recently. Almost 100 students from Years 7 to 12 in dozens of acts, from solos and ensembles to the infectious jazz and soul dance songs of the school’s popular Soul Collective which recently performed at the Noosa Jazz Festival. St Teresa’s Instrumental Music co-ordinator Sonia Petrack said the night showcased the students involved in co-curricular music at the

college and recognised their commitment to ensembles and performance groups. “There’s an amazing depth of talent and fantastic energy among the students - from singers, songwriters and pianists to strings players, drummers, guitarists and saxophonists,” Ms Petrack said. “Taking the students out of the classroom and having them perform on a large stage like The J with professional lighting and sets in front of over 200 people is a wonderful opportunity, and shows them another side of music.”

Bands that performed included Femme Fatales, Blues Brothers Band, Triple Minx, Soul Collective, Concert Band, Year 10 Jazz Band and Seventh Citizen. Ensembles included the string ensemble, vocal group and sax ensemble. Bronze, silver, gold and honours music awards were presented to students on the night which had a “Hollywood Glitz and Glam” theme. “This was the last public performance by our Year 12 music students, so we really wanted to farewell them in style,” Ms Petrack said.

Gestapu a talking point Life of

brine PHIL JARRATT

Electrifying Ubud Back in Bali. Home away from home. Sun going down outside our suite on the edge of a ravine, noise of kids bathing in the river way below, the slower pulse of life here. I breathe it in, revived. As I write, we’ve been here just four days, this edge of town resort providing the perfect counterpoint to the crazy melee that is the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. I mentioned last week that the

Indonesian Government of Joko Widodo had banned certain sessions discussing the 50th anniversary of the genocide known as “Gestapu”, and understandably this has been a major talking point among the gathered writers, academics, politicians and diplomats. Some of my friends have been banned from speaking, but Dick Lewis, who witnessed the horrors of Klungkung in 1965 as a child, snuck through the cracks somehow, and this afternoon I listened to his descriptions of his missionary parents risking their lives to save people from the death squads, with a mixture of sadness and pride that my mate will tell his story, regardless of consequences.

This advertisement is intentionally upside down

And speaking of that, Patrick Burgess and I have been circling each other for decades, without actually meeting. I knew his legendary dad, the Vietnam war correspondent and knockabout journo Pat Burgess from my tyro days as a journalist in Sydney when the late Ron Saw opened all the doors for me, but Pat Jr, who has lived in Bali for years, was one of those guys everyone says you must know, but I didn’t. Until this week. Wow! I’m in awe of this guy. Since meeting, we’ve formed a lovesick triangle, me, Patrick and Bill Finnegan of the New Yorker, mainly because we’re all surfers and there’s a macker of a swell forming right now and we want to be riding waves rather than talking. (Finnegan in fact slipped the chain this morning and phoned me from Uluwatu suggesting I skip my chat session and join him.) But back to Burgess. He was a Sydney barrister, part-time muso and serious surfer when he decided to devote his attention to the plight of Timor Leste. By then his experience in human rights issues had put him on the radar of many UN agencies, but his passion was equalled by the girl he met in Timor, Galuh Wandita, now his wife and one of Indonesia’s most respected activists. Galuh and Patrick now run Asian Justice and Rights (AJAR) out of Bali, and work to alleviate many forms of injustice across Asia, but the story is just beginning. Sitting in a quiet workspace in Canggu a few years ago, working for world peace between surfs, Patrick met a bald boofhead named Phil Gwynne, who was writing TV scripts. The two became friends. A few weeks later, Patrick was in Myanmar at a social justice convention when he found himself on a panel with Aung San Suu Kyi, the social democrat hero of Burma, and also possibly the sexiest 70-year-old on the planet. Suu Kyi suggested to Patrick that he should develop a television soap opera that explained human rights to Burmese. Pat’s such a cool cat that he said he would consider it, despite having no television experience. Okay, back in Canggu, he tells Phil Gwynne that the most respected female politician in the world is willing to back a TV project. This is where it starts to sound like a joke - two Aussie scriptwriters walk

The Bill and Phil Show in Ubud.

into a bar in Burma etc - but the two bro down, write a treatment, and it’s up and running, the most-watched TV show in the country. Patrick is telling me this story last week around midnight in a noisy bar in Ubud while we catch Legally Brown comedian Nazeem Hussain’s hilarious act. I probably miss a few bits of both, but next day he and Phil Gwynne present their project to an intensely interested audience, and it’s bloody brilliant. I’m sitting with old mate Arthur Karvan, from nightclub nights in Sydney long ago, and we both agree that this simple concept is so good, so worthy. Bottom line is that Asians are largely ignorant of their legal rights, and their governments often are happy to take advantage of this. Pat and Phil’s series, The Sun, The Moon and The Truth, (the Buddha said only three things can never be hidden for long) is reaching millions of Burmese in terms they can understand, and this is just the beginning. Regardless of whether the programmed sessions are good, bad or indifferent, it’s electrifying being at the Ubud Festival, with incredible private encounters around literally every corner. Even our government gets in on the act. We had farewell drinks with the estimable Majell Hind, our outgoing Bali consul-general, followed by lunch the next day with the incoming deputy head of the Indonesian Embassy, Justin Lee, both lively and animated occasions. Meanwhile Finnegan, author of Barbarian Days, the first surf book to ever make top 10 on the New York Times bestseller list (the bastard!) and I are on the road, flogging our wares at fringe events in Sanur and Canggu this week. And hopefully squeezing in a few surfs.

SPORTTODAY

A promising future Between the

flags RON LANE

AT THE recent Summer of Surf Carnival Round 1 held at Kurrawa there were some very good signs for the Noosa club. Competing in moderate surf, Noosa's Open Male Taplin Relay finished in third place. As this is considered to be a blue ribbon event, the team, which consisted of Bailey Williams, Rhys Burrows and Jack Moyes could be well worth watching. To make the future of the Taplin in Noosa look even better the Under 17 Male also finished in third place. This team consisted of Connor Burrows, Cooper Williams and Jasper Outram. For the ladies Jordan Mercer won the Surf Board, second in the Iron Woman and teamed with Kirsty Higgison to win the Open Female Double Ski. For Noosa this event was a double with Sharlene Kelly and Molly Bainbridge finishing second. For the Ski Relay Kirsty Higgins, Sharlene Kelly and Jordan Mercer combined to make it another first for Noosa. Regarding Noosa's overall performance Team Manager Bruce Warren said, “When you

consider that it is very early in the year we are very happy with the results; these people could be in for a good season.” To record these results so early is indeed good for it gives the Head Coach Darren Mercer an indication as to the progress of the team and what, if any, changes are required. Well it has been and gone. The big gamble of conducting the swim section of the Noosa Tri at Noosa's Main Beach has, by all considerations, been a major success. Well done to all involved. To walk amongst those who were enjoying breakfast on the deck of the Noosa Surf Club during the Tri, their opinions were all the same; “How good is this - Noosa at its best.” The weather was beautiful and from the lifesavers' point of view, swimming conditions were safe, and to keep the fans informed a large screen bought up-to-the-minute progress. Water Safety co-ordinator Joe Cirello of the Noosa Club said, “For the Tri we had 25 of our local lifesavers on patrol with members driving IRBs, jet rescue skis and other members manning rescue boards and tubes. It was very successful and all went well.” Water safety for the Tri was supplied by the Coolum, Sunshine Beach and Mudjimba

clubs and for the Friday ocean swim was supplied by Noosa. For the clubbies on Sunday it was a long day with their organisers starting at 5.30am and patrolling through to 10.30am. It is these types of lifesavers that are the backbone of all our clubs. The patrol people for the Tri knew they had a tough job ahead of them. After the starter's gun was fired at 6.30am through till 10.30am there were at any given time, upward of several hundred swimmers in the water. When you take into consideration the fact that these swimmers were spread over a distance of 1.5 kilometres you can understand the responsibility undertaken by the lifesavers. A responsibility that these experienced members handled with ease. With the Noosa Tri now rated as the second biggest in the world, I feel that the organisers can rest assured that the success of Sunday's event has proven that water safety at Main Beach for future events is definitely 'No Problem'. At Noosa bronze training is still ongoing. The success of the surf education in the schools, conducted by Greg McLaughlin and his training team, is continuing to be on a par with the success of our Seahorse Nippers program. It is good to note that both are centred on the young.

Masters of the race AUSTRALIA’S Ashleigh Gentle claimed her third Noosa Triathlon title on the weekend and Joe Maloy became the first American to salute Australia’s most iconic triathlon. In the elite men’s race a large pack, featuring all the pre-race favourites, exited the water together including Maloy, Matthew Roberts, Clayton Fettell, Ryan Fisher and Jake Birtwhistle. Out onto the bike course the top contenders stayed within sight of each other until Maloy, the 2014 Elite National USA Champion, made his move at about the 13km marker. “I was with the top group in the swim and had a pretty good transition and once I hit Noosa Garmin Hill I felt pretty good, it wasn’t my strategy but I just rolled with it and drilled it up the hill,” Maloy said. Queensland’s Fisher and Ironman 70.3 specialist Fettell attempted to bridge the gap to Maloy but weren’t able to close the gap and Maloy entered T2 with a lead of over a minute. Maloy said he was surprised with the support he received from the Australian crowd. “This is an amazing event. I can’t believe as an American I got so many cheers. It’s just been awesome,” he said. Race favourites Ryan Fisher and Jake Birtwhistle were second and third across the line. In the women’s race Queenslander Danielle De Francesco set the cracking pace to exit the ocean swim first with the likes of 2013 Noosa Triathlon champion Emma Moffatt, Natalie Van Coevorden, Gentle and Charlotte McShane close behind. It was Van Coevorden who made the move out in front on the bike, until a disappointing early turn out on course led to her disqualification.

Back in charge the defending champion Gentle used a bike and run combination to run out a convincing winner. Gentle’s emotion as she crossed the line showed exactly what the win meant to the Olympic hopeful.

I had a lot of confidence in my bike but I haven’t been well over the last week and I knew that the run would be a bit touch and go. I really tried to hold form and composure and I couldn’t be happier to win here today … Ashleigh Gentle

“I know Danielle (De Francesco) very well. We actually started triathlon together and she is an amazing swimmer so I knew she could set the pace really fast at the start,” Gentle said. “I had a lot of confidence in my bike but I haven’t been well over the last week and I knew that the run would be a bit touch and go. I really tried to hold form and composure and I couldn’t be happier to win here today. Fingers crossed for Rio in 2016 and I will definitely be giving it my best shot.” Gentle joins legend of the sport and mentor Emma Frodeno (nee Snowsill) with her third listing on the Noosa Triathlon Honour Roll.

NOOSATRIATHLON Over 8300 kids, mums, dads, elite athletes and veteran competitors all took part in the 2015 Noosa Triathlon held over the weekend. The main event on Sunday was accompanied by a host of extra events that encouraged everyone to take part in Noosa’s most popular event. From the Superkidz and Special Triathlon that saw kids aged 7 to 13 run a fun course, to the charity-driven Noosa Breakfast Fun Run, the Noosa Triathlon is a family-friendly fun event the whole community can take part in. The Noosa Today photographer KARINA MAY was on hand to capture some of the most inspiring moments of the weekend.

High five!

Big smiles all round for this pair completing the triathlon.

Hooray! A winning finish for this competitor.

A glorious finish to the sound of applause for one triathlon competitor.

Andrew’s motivated to keep tri-ing By JOLENE OGLE TWENTY-FIVE kilos lighter and fourteen minutes faster, local Andrew Lane took to the Noosa Triathlon for the second year. When Andrew, 39, moved to Australia from England almost a decade ago, he weighed in at 106kgs, but a desire to live the “Aussie dream” inspired the Noosa man to pick up the weights and get training. “(Moving here) was a chance to get fit, get more active and enjoy the outdoors, which is the Australia I always dreamt of,” he said. But it hasn’t been a smooth transition for the international digital business generation agency CEO who worked hard to lose more than 25kgs after moving to the Sunshine state. “When I moved here I was 106kgs and at my lightest I’ve been 80kg,” he said. Andrew said his dramatic weight loss was down to a strict diet and plenty of exercise, plus the motivation of wanting to compete in the Noosa Triathlon. “I went for a period of time where I was pretty

boring, cutting out alcohol while eating clean and healthy foods. But I managed to shift the weight and keep it off, as well,” he said. “I wouldn’t have been able to do a triathlon at 106kgs so as I started to lose the weight – I needed something to keep me motivated.” While most people would opt to run a shorter event as their first tri, Andrew said he wanted to give the Noosa Triathlon “a crack” and registered in the event last year. “I decided to get straight into it with an Olympic distance,” he said. “I didn’t even know if I could finish it last year, but this year I know I can because I’ve done it once already.” Heading into this year’s event, Andrew said he was a little more relaxed than last year but was worried about the swim leg of the tri now it had been moved to Noosa Main Beach. “I’ve never swum in the ocean before,” he said. “So the swim is my weakest discipline. I know if I finish the swim I will finish the race.” Post-event, Andrew reported back with a time 14 minutes faster than last year’s 3 hours and

Now: Andrew getting ready to take to the water at the Noosa Triathlon on Sunday now 25kgs lighter. 18 minutes and said the swim leg “wasn’t so bad”. “The whole thing went a lot better than I thought it would,” he said. “The swim did seem to go on forever, but there were less people trying to clamber over you and you could keep to the side of faster people. I think it went well as I had never swum in the sea before.” Despite mild sunburn and blisters on his feet, Andrew said the last kilometre of the running track was amazing as hundreds of locals and visitors cheered on competitors. “It doesn’t matter how tired you are, the crowd gets you through it,” he said. “That’s the great thing about the Noosa Tri; so many people turn out to cheer you on.”
