Gang ‘sex assault’: Syndrome fails to wipe smile from face of ‘Livi’ By ALANA MITCHELSON

By ALANA MITCHELSON INVESTIGATORS have received a “large amount of calls about an alleged gang sex attack on a 14-year-old Geelong girl, Victoria Police said yesterday. A spokesperson said the callers had contacted Sexual Crimes Squad detectives since police released images of the alleged suspects on Wednesday. Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Walsh called the St Albans Park incident “horrific. “This girl is an obviously really young 14-year-old girl, Det Sen Sgt Walsh said. “We understand that at least three of the men were involved with the sexual assault. “She’s absolutely devastated and traumatised. She’s been very brave and fantastic at helping us fill in the gaps. Police alleged the attack began when the four men met the girl and a 16-year-old male friend in a park about 4am Sunday. The men attacked the boy before sexually assaulting the girl. The boy fled and called for

help but the men carried the girl to a nearby house and assaulted her again, police alleged. The girl described the men as “really strong, violent and drunk, Det Sen Sgt Walsh said. Police found the girl in the park at 5am before launching a search of the scene for evidence. Police described the first man as aged 25-30, 183cm tall with a solid, muscular build, unshaven and possibly with an English accent. He had tattoos along the length of both arms and across the chest. The second was in his midtwenties, 178cm with a bulky build and clean-shaven. The third was “youngish looking, 173cm with a thick black beard, police said. The fourth was in his midthirties, 184cm and unshaven with a bulky build. He also possibly had an English accent. Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Callers deluge police

THE EARLY months of a child’s development are an exciting time for parents. But from first step to the first word, it was difficult for Geelong mum Fiona Bell to watch as her otherwise healthy, happy baby slowly began losing these skills. “Before my daughter Alivia was born I’d never heard of Rett syndrome, Ms Bell said. “It was difficult to initially understand what was going on because she was a thriving baby until she began to regress. There wasn’t a lot of information or support and internet searches were a cold way to find out things. “Bill Callaghan from the Rett Syndrome Association of Australia (RSAA) came and met me at my house and, being someone who had a Rett syndrome child of his own, it was so valuable to talk to him because he’s been there. Later this month RSAA will host its first national conference for families in Geelong, its founder’s hometown. RSAA president Mr Callaghan described the rare condition as a genetic mutation that mostly affected girls. Rett syndrome can impact breathing, circulation and movement. Symptoms include loss of speech, repetitive movements and curvature of the spine. Young girls with the condition commonly lose the ability to walk. They are also prone to other medical issues such as seizures, pressure on vital organs like the lungs and heart as well as constipation and heartburn. “It’s a tough condition. It’s not fair, Mr Callaghan said. Continued on page 5 Picture: REG RYAN

Double Take CENTRAL Geelong was buzzing with bargain hunters on Melbourne Cup Tuesday as more than 230 traders flaunted their wares as part of an annual sidewalk sales event. Deputy mayor Michelle Heagney reckoned the sales brought more than 30,000 additional shoppers into central Geelong. Which was all very well for those traders who had a “sidewalk” to sell on - stores in Westfield Geelong wanted to be part of the fun but, without footpaths outside their shopfronts, all they could do was to put tables out in the shopping centre’s walkways. With the added crush of people and less room to move, the crowd was tighter than the betting ring on Flemington.

Our water ‘100% for .0006 the cost’

LAST week’s Double Take reported on dirty tricks against Liberal MP Sarah Henderson in the nascent campaign for Corangamite, but this week demonstrated what a difficult target she has become. The first-term member of the traditionally conservative, probusiness party delved further into Greens camouflage this week, echoing their opposition to a proposed waterfront casino in Geelong. Problem gambling was her concern, not any potential job creation or extra tourism revenue for a casino in a proposed convention centre astride a new pier. Ms Henderson has also opposed tapping onshore gas reserves, called for an end to a Geelong ship’s offshore fishing operations and campaigned against Anglesea’s Alcoa power

station, which employed over 80 staff before it closed. Maybe she thinks her opponents won’t find their target if she keeps stepping to the left. AND ALL credit to the Indy’s impeccable timing with last week’s report on record dry conditions across the Geelong region. The story was written a day before the paper which was delivered last Friday. Which was the day rain finally bucketed down. “Did you not look out the window at the absolute tsunami from the sky?" posted Nick Harrison under a Facebook link to the story online. Next time we’ll consult the weather forecast before going to press.

A 100 PER cent quality rating and a cost almost 1700 times cheaper than bottled competitors are “compelling reasons” to drink local tap water. Managing director Joe Adamski backed Barwon Water’s product this week after announcing its top marks in an annual quality compliance report. The authority achieved 100 per cent for various quality standards under the Safe Drinking Water Act 2003. Mr Adamski said choosing between tap and bottled water was a “personal choice” but pointed out the merits of filling a glass rather than buying a bottle. “Our region’s tap water is sourced from pristine catchments and meets all necessary standards for safety, quality and taste,” he said. “Tap water represents much

DRINK UP: Joe Adamski better value for money, with 1000 litres of tap water costing $2.25, which is about the same as many 600mL bottled varieties. “It’s also more environmentally friendly than bottled water, with Australia recycling less than 50 per cent of PET plastic drink bottles. The rest are littered or land-filled.”

The compliance report also revealed fewer water quality complaints than in the previous year. Barwon Water received 1.3 complaints per 1000 customers in 2014/2015, down from 1.6 in 2013/2014 and below the threeyear average of 1.8. The greatest reduction was in taste and odour complaints. Mr Adamski said supplying safe drinking water and protecting the region’s catchments were Barwon Water’s “highest priorities”. “These results reflect the success of our rigorous monitoring programs, which include weekly, monthly and quarterly sampling across the entire supply network.” Barwon Water encouraged residents to drink tap water through various sponsorship and education programs, Mr Adamski said.

MPs brawl over ‘failed’ scheme to create work By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE STATE Government has perpetrated a “cruel hoax” on Geelong’s unemployed with its Back to Work scheme, according to Liberal MP Andrew Katos. The scheme had failed miserably in Geelong with few jobs created, the South Barwon MP said. “Before the last state election Labor promised Victorians a $100 million Back to Work plan that would create 100,000 jobs. Figures show that this plan has only created 164 jobs,” Mr Katos said. “In the Geelong region only 10 jobs have been created with not one job being created in the Bellarine electorate. “In the South Barwon electorate only one job has been created and even this is not certain, as the postcode of 3216 also includes parts of the Geelong electorate.” Premier Daniel Andrews pitched Back to Work and Labor’s abandoned Bay West container port plan as “a jobs saviour to the people of Geelong”,

Andrew Katos

Christine Couzens

Mr Katos said. “With only 10 jobs being created by Back to Work and Bay West being ditched, Daniel Andrews has been exposed perpetrating a cruel hoax on Geelong workers and the unemployed. To compound matters, money budgeted for TAFE is now being redirected into this dud scheme. “Daniel Andrews told us we had a TAFE crisis, so why is his Government taking money away TAFE

to fund a dud scheme?” Geelong Labor MP Christine Couzens hit back, accusing Mr Katos of hypocrisy. “The Liberals were in government for four years and haemorrhaged jobs out of Geelong,“ she said. “We need to give this thing a fair go. It has only been operating a few months - we’re still in the first year and it’s early days yet. “There are a number of big-ticket items just starting to kick off now and we’ll see benefits in the coming year. “It’s not going to happen overnight.” Ms Couzens said the redevelopment of Geelong Performing Arts Centre, the next stage of Simonds Stadium and a new rail maintenance building at Waurn Ponds would create local jobs. “WorkSafe is being relocated to Geelong, with a new building to be constructed, and Barwon Water has begun its head office redevelopment, so there are a lot of commitments about to kick off. These are constructions jobs and will have a flow-on effect once they are completed.”

In brief Tornado alert A TORNADO alert was issued for the Geelong region yesterday as a “severe thunderstorm” appeared on the Bureau of Meteorology’s radar. The warning was lifted later in the afternoon, with a suspected tornado instead reported in Melbourne’s north.

Schoolies warning SCHOOLIES heading to destinations like the Surf Coast should plan rest stops and take their families’ “safest cars”, the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) has advised. The TAC warned many schoolies would be on their first road trips, with young drivers 30 times more likely to crash in their first six months of driving solo.

So artistic SOME of the region’s best VCE art (pictured) will go on display in Geelong this month. Geelong Art Society said it would host the city’s 2015 VCE Art Students Exhibition at Shearer’s Arms Gallery from 18 November to 5 December.

Off-road crackdown A CRACKDOWN on off-roaders in state parks north of Geelong has produced 30 infringement notices, according to authorities. Parks Victoria said the “incredibly successful” two-day operation also delivered numerous verbal and official warnings to riders and drivers over the weekend.

Riordan wins LIBERAL Richard Riordan has won a by-election for the state seat of Polwarth with 64.7 per cent of the vote on a two-candidate-preferred basis. Voters in the seat, stretching from Bannockburn and Anglesea into the Western District, went back to the polls after Terry Mulder announced his resignation earlier this year.

Family business at risk as trawler sinks on bayfront By ALANA MITCHELSON A FISHING trawler sank while moored to a jetty off Eastern Beach Road yesterday. Owner Steve Vagias said the incident at Stony Point Pier, near Royal Geelong Yacht Club, could put him

out of business. “I’ve had that boat for 10 years,” the Hamlyn Heights resident said. “I have a family fishing business and that (boat) right there is my bread and butter down the drain.” Mr Vagias said the trawler was “fine” when he moored it and left

about 9pm Wednesday. Environmental Protection Authority officers assessed the impact of fuel leaking from the vessel into the bay. Police and firefighters also attended. Oil fumes could be smelt from the foreshore into central Geelong’s shop-

ping area on Thursday morning. Geelong Police Sergeant Peter Meath said the owner had organised salvaging. “We’re still not sure how the boat sank but there’s no indication that it was anything suspicious,” Sgt Meath said.

Festival ‘to raise heat’ on climate A NEW festival is encouraging Geelong to “rise to the challenge of climate change” as CSIRO research shows that sceptics now outnumber believers in Australia. The inaugural Act on Climate Change Festival would “provide the answers and create a new, positive path” for the city, said event co-ordinator Dan Cowdell. “Let me tell you something surprising about climate change,” Mr Cowdell said, in a media release announcing the event. “While the United Nations announced last week that the national commitments of 146 nations won’t solve the climate problem caused by our uncontrolled air pollution, the good news is that there is no lack of technical solutions lined up to solve the problem. “There is only a lack of will, so instead of waiting around for our politicians to make the right decisions we really need to start acting at a local level, as individuals, as families and as businesses. “We must enable our community to rise to the climate challenge as it confronts us.” Mr Cowdell said State Climate Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville would open the festival before an evening of keynote speakers and a panel at Simonds Stadium on 20 November. Panel members would include Climate Change Authority member Pro-

Mr Cowdell said more information on the festival was available at actonclimatefestival.org The CSIRO released its survey results the same day as Mr Cowdell announced the climate change festival. The survey of 5000 Australians found that 45.9 per cent of respondents blamed human activity for climate change but 46.5 per cent thought it was a “natural fluctuation” or “not happening”. The rest had “no idea” whether the climate was changing. About 40,000 delegates from around the world are expected to attend a UN climate change conference in Paris, from 30 November to 11 December.

BEST MATES: Alivia with Cuddles, her toy monkey.

From page 1 “As they age they become more aware of the environment. But then more and more medical issues knock them down and after each setback it gets harder for them to achieve things.” While early intervention is crucial in supporting the girls through their development, ongoing therapies including physio, hydrotherapy, speech therapy and osteopathy are available. Ms Bell remained hopeful for Alivia despite Rett syndrome having no cure or treatment. Ms Bell said ‘Livi’ remained happy despite the limitations of her condition. She loved “water, music and being with other children, especially her peers at mainstream and special school”. “Livi has the best smile for us every morning when she wakes up,” Ms Bell said. “She loves going to the beach, the waves and sitting on her sister’s board. She loves her dad playing guitar to her and being read to or listening to books on CD. “Livi really just loves being involved and included in daily life like helping with cooking and licking the spoon. I guess she just enjoys what most 11-year-olds do.” The two-day event aims to connect families from across the country so that they can share experiences. Expert speakers from overseas and interstate will offer information about therapies and latest research as well as advice and strategies. Families will be able to drop off their children at a creche where volunteers will entertain the girls with activities such as facepainting, reading a story or blowing bubbles. The two-day RSAA conference runs from 20 to 21 November. Organisers said prospective volunteers for the conference could phone Fiona Bell on 0427 214 950. Floating tree to return next Friday GEELONG’S floating Christmas tree will light up Corio Bay again from next Friday. Mayor Darryn Lyons said he was looking forward to the tree’s return to the waterfront after its big debut last year. “I really hope tens of thousands of people join us for the opening night because the excitement of the kids and the smiles on everyone’s faces is what this is all about,” Cr Lyons said. The tree will feature a new light show synchronised to contemporary Christmas carols. The show would start about 9.15pm, Cr Lyons said. He labelled the tree’s tourism and economic benefits as “crucial” for Geelong. “Almost 250,000 came into the CBD to see the central Geelong Christ-

mas activities (last year). Meanwhile, the broader central Geelong Christmas activities generated an estimated $18 million windfall for our economy. “Social media was also in a frenzy, with #GeelongChristmas attracting 79 million impressions on Twitter, two million on Instagram, and 6.4 million on Facebook.” Some of the mayor’s council colleagues have criticised the cost of the tree, with no guarantees it will return on water next year. Council recently agreed to provide extra funding for the tree to cover increased storage, installation and other management costs. The tree will be in place on Geelong’s waterfront until 3 January. In other festive-season developments, Myer Geelong will unveil its second Christmas windows display at 5pm today.

City earns $3m in big Mac sale By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG council has reaped a $3 million windfall from the sale of a North Geelong McDonald’s site. Council rezoned the site, formerly part of Jack Deppler Park, known as Seagull Paddock, to a commercial zone earlier this year. The Independent reported in July last year that council had to send the rezoning to an independent planning panel after receiving objections. The McDonald’s, at 400 Melbourne Road, is on council-owned land and the amendment proposed rezoning

and subdividing the lot from the rest of the park and putting it up for sale. Auctioneer Burgess Rawson said the site, leased to the fastfood giant, fetched $3.05 million late last month. Twelve bidders went head to head for the property, pushing the yield down to 3.7 per cent after it was initially listed at offers over $2 million. Burgess Rawson managing director Raoul Holderhead said the result reflected strong investor appetite for blue-chip assets on long leases.

“The low, affordable rental of $117,434 per annum reflects the property being subject to a ground lease with McDonald’s owning the building and all other above-ground improvements,” he said. “With McDonald’s having rebuilt the building in 2003 and in recent years adding a McCafe, it is safe to say McDonald’s plan is to stay. “The busy and proven location is evident by some 37,000 cars passing the property each day,“ Mr Holderhead said. The site has been a McDonald’s since 1980.

Council in dark on casino plan PLANS FOR a $1 billion waterfront casino and convention centre have intrigued Geelong’s council. A spokesperson said City Hall was still waiting yesterday for any further information following last Friday’s reports the Andrews Government was considering a proposal to build Victoria’s second casino in Geelong. The news horrified anti-gambling activists and the Greens, who urged the government to reject the project. Melbourne media reported that developer John Haddad was

Gambling den for convention centre on pier eyeing Geelong for a new venture. He had reportedly identified the city as a “superb place” for a casino and had approached the government. Later reports indicated the casino would be part of a convention centre on a new wharf. Mayor Darryn Lyons said the council was unaware of any government plan to allow a second casino in Victoria. City Hall was “keen” to investigate many initiatives to bring

new business to Geelong, especially a convention centre, he said. The long-touted convention centre is one of Geelong’s priority projects for funding. Cr Lyons has previously suggested building the centre on a new Yarra Street Pier, which would also berth cruise ships. The Greens called on the government to rule out any second casino in Victoria. Geelong’s community could

not afford to lose more money on pokies, said Victorian Greens gambling spokeswoman Colleen Hartland. “Nearly $112 million is already lost every year in the City of Geelong on pokies alone,” she said. “We know poker machines are deceptive and designed to be addictive. “A casino could bring hundreds more to a community already haemorrhaging money to

this unethical industry. “One casino is more than enough for Victoria to cater for the tourist market. The reality is that the casino will be heavily used by locals and our community can’t afford any more losses on gambling. “There are already 1366 poker machines in 26 venues in the City of Greater Geelong. We can’t afford to have any more.” Liberal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson also opposed any

casino in Geelong. She was concerned the government might have “floated“ the plan to test public sentiment. “I strongly support the further development of our waterfront to house a convention centre, boutique hotels and tourism infrastructure, without the need for a casino,” Ms Henderson said. “Geelong’s tourism icon is its north-facing bay – a rare asset which should be fiercely protected. In a city such as Geelong, gambling has the potential to cause real social harm to our tight-knit community.”

Muso writes the book on living an MS life to the full with hope By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

AUTHOR: Bree-Arne Manley has written a book about her life with MS, part as therapy and partly to help others Picture: REG RYAN understand the disease. 146423

BREE-ARNE Manley is never short of a word. The Point Lonsdale singer, songwriter, wife and mother has lyrically alluded to her battle with multiple sclerosis in two EPs and a double album. She’s also been a focal point of fund-raising activities for respite facilities to help people with health challenges. Despite all that, Bree admitted always keeping to herself deep thoughts about the impact of MS on her life. “I’m just used to handling it on my own,” she confessed. “It’s been a bit of a closed circle. I was happy to have people looking in from the outside because I still got to choose what they saw.” That won’t be the case after 14 November when Bree launches her first book, Hope - Fighting Multiple Sclerosis. “Now people get to see all the gory details,” she laughed. “I had to learn how to make myself vulnerable. It was extra difficult because I’m already in

a vulnerable position.” Bree confessed the therapeutic process of redrafting the manuscript multiple times forced her to face some of her own demons, after living with MS for so long she forgot what life was like before her diagnosis. “It took three drafts just to get all the angry stuff out,” she said. “It’s really confronting in parts but there’s a lot of funny stuff in there as well, like the times I’ve stepped into the shower, looked down and realised I still had one sock on because I can’t feel my feet.” Strangely enough, Bree said the confrontation of dealing with a sensitive topic worked both ways. “Now I’m finding it confronting telling people about the book and answering questions about it. I also found I’d developed a few tricks to help cope with life, like learning to stay calm and to mellow out a lot. “Writing it unlocked a lot of emotional triggers that I didn’t expect, so I had to use a few of those life tricks with the book as well.”

‘Blowout ahead’, warns NDIS HQ GEELONG-HEADQUARTERED National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has warned the Federal Government of potential cost blowouts for the $22 billion scheme. The ABC reported it had obtained an NDIA document saying the National Disability Insurance Scheme remained at risk of cost overruns. State Government plans to roll out the scheme across Victoria over the next three years after a “successful” Barwon region trial. The Independent reported in September that Premier Daniel Andrews had signed a $5.1 billion bilateral agreement with the Commonwealth to roll out the scheme to an estimated 105,000 Victorians. NDIA said higher rates of autism, workforce and supply shortages, and state costshifting could increase costs. Daniel Andrews “Clearly risks remain, especially for the Commonwealth Government, which is on risk for cost overruns," the NDIA document said. NDIS trials are also under way in the ACT, New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia. The agency said $952.8 million had been committed to fund individual plans at an average annual cost of more than $38,423. The figure for individual plans was $3454 higher than the expected average cost when the scheme was designed. The NDIA said moving to a full roll-out would happen quickly but its full range of costs would emerge over time. The trials were still on time and budget and reporting a high level of satisfaction among participants, the NDIA said. Almost 19,817 people were eligible for the scheme at the start of the financial year, with more than 17,000 plans approved.

Storages down to 58%

TRICKLE-DOWN EFFECT: The Barwon River was still managing a trickle at Buckley Falls this week, despite the dry weather. Picture: REG RYAN

GEELONG has experienced its hottest and one of the driest Octobers since records began for temperatures in 1903 and rain in 1871. The combination left the region’s storages below 60 per cent of capacity after the end of the month, despite a final-day deluge. The previously hottest October was in 1940 when the mean temperature was 15.9C. This year it was 17.1C, compared to the latest 30-year average of 13.7C. The most likely culprit for the 2015 record was not man-made global warming but a combination of a very strong El Nino and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) together with the everpresent rain-shadow effect from the Otway Ranges and the Great Divide. When the first two features combine they provide warm dry air masses from the northeast and northwest, which have full sway over southern Victoria to produce the optimum conditions for record-breaking heat and aridity. Very low rainfall was experienced right across western Victoria, including the Geelong region. Despite a thunderstorm dumping around 10mm-plus up to 9am on the last day of the month, the totals remained generally below 30 to 50 per cent of normal October falls. The urban average was only 17mm compared to the latest 30year October average of 53.8mm. The region’s storages were 58.4 per cent this week. Numerous temperature records were broken in October.

Under

the

weather Lindsay Smail

The highest daily maximum average was a record 24.1C compared to the 30-year average of 19.1C. The previous highest 22.9C was in 1914. The October mean temperature was the highest since 1903 when records began, with 17.1C recorded compared to the previous highest of 15.9C in 1940. The region recorded its warmest first week in October, with three days over 30C. The other records were: six days over 30C, equal with 1977; 21 days over 20C compared to the average 10.5 days; and 13 nights over 10C, equal with 1963. The maximum temperature for the month was 35.5C on 5 October. The lowest overnight was 2.9C on the first day of the month. The highest overnight minimum was 15.9C on 21 October and the coldest day was 15.5C on the 22nd. Three strong wind days were recorded for the month, with a maximum gust of 78km/h at Breakwater’s weather station on 7 October. One thunderstorm was recorded on 31 October but the month was free of severe storms.

Review to trim size of council GEELONG will have one less councillor after a Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) review beginning next week. The electoral representation review wants submissions on the number of councillors but state laws require one fewer at next year’s municipal elections, from Geelong’s existing 12, excluding the mayor, to 11. The review follows a State Government examination of Geelong’s directly elected mayoral model. A discussion paper released as part of the Local Government Act review questioned the effectiveness of directly electing Geelong’s mayor. South Barwon Liberal MP Andrew Katos feared the review indicated the Andrews Labor Government wanted to axe Geelong’s public vote for the mayor. The separate VEC will not consider the directly elected mayoral model but will have significant ramifications, changing the number of councillors and altering ward boundaries. At least two wards will be amalgamated to reduce the number of councillors. A reduction to an even number of councillors could result in hung votes, forcing the use of a mayoral casting vote.

1205234-CB45-15

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

MAPPED: Geelong's existing ward boundaries. The review could also recommend changing Geelong to an unsubdivided municipality, with councillors acting regionally rather than on behalf of their ward. It could also consider moving to multiple-councillor wards and new ward names. The VEC said the review sought to ensure fair, equitable representation for voters. “Public submissions are a vital part of the review process, providing valuable local knowledge and perspectives,” commissioner Warwick Gately said. VEC will host a public information session at City Hall from 7pm on 18 November. Public submissions are open at vec.civ.gov.au until Wednesday.

Letters Fall back to storage I SUGGEST further analysis and action by Barwon Water and the Andrews Government regarding Barwon Water managing director Joe Adamski’s assurances in last week’s Independent. Wouldn’t it be better to deliver a fall-back position by constructing additional Otway storage given existing infrastructure and the area’s usually reliable but heavily unharvested rain? Why not exploit this ace in the hole? Neither Barwon Downs nor Anglesea aquifers have gauges and the jury’s out on water-table-reduction downsides for primary production. Why seek to add further unnecessary impost on the state’s water grid, which for all intents and purposes when push comes to shove will have as its sole provider an overtaxed Wonthaggi desalination plant? While recycling, becoming more water-wise and inevitable restrictions can all play a role, it would be cavalier for Barwon Water and the government of the day to assert they can combat climate change out to the middle of the century without having a fall-back position that innumerable communities across the country would be so grateful to have at their disposal. Richard Worland Manifold Heights

To protect, not self-serve FURTHER to my letter in last week’s Independent, about council’s inability to find $45,000 for cameras dedicated to public safety, a number of things must be said. First, council pulled the pin on another public safety initiative, namely the security men who populated the area of the Mall in the CBD. This would have saved council more than $45,000 easily and was done simply as a commercial decision. Council, police, and State Government are all contracted by the public to attend to public safety issues such as the security cameras. It is my belief that, as an incorporated, commercial entity, Victoria Police and its Chief Commissioner hold full commercial liability for its inability to honour its contract with the people of Victoria. To this end, if police will not schedule adequate patrols and council won’t shell out a measly $45,000 for cameras, then people adversely affected should consider class actions or suing individually. Wetlands for the birds, not 5000 people IT IS proposed the Cheetham salt fields at Moolap should be converted into a Gold Coaststyle housing development with canals and a marina, which would create many jobs and bring in approximately 5000 residents into this exclusive housing project (Independent, 9 October). However, such a development would involve massive earth movements in the water and on land, destroying the valuable seagrass meadows in the bay. Furthermore, with the prospect of global warming and accompanying sea level rises there is a high risk that such low-lying properties could be inundated in the not-too-distant future, resulting in expensive compensation claims eventually borne by rate and taxpayers. On the other hand, the area could be turned into parkland, which would also create numerous jobs to clean up the site and construct paths and boardwalks. With the growing popularity of ecotourism, the park also could attract thousands of tourists to see the myriad resident and migratory birds

Local scenery in great film EVEN if Independent readers haven’t been to the cinema lately, The Dressmaker is a must. It’s absolutely brilliant; beautifully made with drama, pathos, humour, excellent scenery filmed partly at Little River, 1950s morals exactly as I remember them and a host of wonderful Aussie stars. ACTU misleads members THE AUSTRALIAN Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) recently organised what turned out to be a phoney debate on the China-Australia free trade agreement (ChAFTA) in Geelong. After I indicated I was unable to attend, the ACTU distributed in Corangamite flyers falsely stating I would debate Textile Clothing and Footwear Union’s Michele O’Neil. The ACTU did not even have the decency to tell its own members the truth. Anticipating this was a stunt to disparage me, I published an open letter asking the ACTU to desist from this disrespectful, dishonest campaign. The day after the debate Corangamite residents were bombarded with pre-recorded ACTU robocalls falsely claiming I failed to show up for the de-

BIRDLAND: Geelong would be better off with wetlands than a "Gold Coast-style" development, says a reader. in the wetlands. Such a park would also leave intact the nowrare seagrass meadows that, according to a recent Science Show, absorb a larger amount of carbon dioxide than rainforests. In addition, the seagrass meadows could probably form an asset in carbon trading. On balance, wouldn’t the park option bring more benefits to Geelong? E Pollock Belmont bate. The ACTU used the same tactics in many other electorates. Rather than playing partisan political games, union bosses should spend their members’ money fighting for local jobs. Their failure to speak out when the state Labor Government cancelled the East West Link project, destroying 7000 jobs, said it all. After months of trying to derail ChAFTA, Labor has agreed to vote in support of this once-in-a-generation trade deal. ChAFTA is good for trade and jobs and will see massive benefits flow to Australia in the coming years. Union bosses need to get behind this great opportunity for our country. Life on Mars IT SEEMS Mars is now the new-world preferred destination for 21st Century adventurers. It’s a one-way trip, so any space travellers will have to stay permanently. Here are some reasons against living on Mars: • no mobile phone coverage; • broadband hasn’t been rolled out yet;

Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au PO Box 407, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799

• no breweries and only BYO wine; • no public transport to whinge about; • no venues for Aussie Rules or the Sport of Kings; and • no surf and barbecues would be impossible - no meat, for starters. On the other hand, some reasons to live on Mars include: • no politicians and the likelihood of in-laws arriving is very low; • it never rains; • there’s nothing to frack; • no taxation; • it’s a developer's paradise with no feasibility or environmental studies, no marketing or consumer reports and no permits or building inspectors; and • no petrol price wars, high interest credit cards or ATMs. Melva Stott Anglesea

Kids want real policies BILL Shorten is adding two and two together again to make six. Many countries around the world give 16-yearolds the vote but none have compulsory voting like we have. If droves of 18-year-olds thumb their noses at voting despite knowing the penalty, why should younger people take it up? When asked why they don’t bother with this privilege they tell me they think politicians are many things, none of which are complimentary. They are more than cynical. If Mr Shorten would only come up with real policies that promise them future jobs and security they would listen intently. Dropping little sweeteners into the dialogue about them being able to act like the adults they are in no way educated for is a furphy they can see through immediately. Just the same, Mr Shorten would go to the top of their favourites list. They’d say, ‘Yes please, Mr Shorten’ if they thought it would give them access to other adult privileges like drinking and smoking legally, telling their parents and teachers they are no longer children and can make up their own minds about their lives. Speaking for the kids, I say get off the popularity train, Mr Shorten, and give us some real policies. Elizabeth Cross St Albans Park

ductor, Mr Roose studied conducting in Vienna and founded the Sinfonia of Adelaide. Mr Roose, a musical director of Melbourne Sinfonia for the past 20 years, lives at Inverleigh. With 35 members so far, Ms Galloway said the orchestra was keen to hear from other highly skilled musicians in the region who would like to attend rehearsals at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus. Ms Galloway said the orchestra planned two concerts for 2016 and hoped to attract broad audiences with accessible programs and affordable ticket prices. The first concert would be a gala event showcasing the region’s musical talents at Deakin’s waterfront Costa Hall on 26 February. The program would impress and inspire lovers of fine music, Ms Galloway said, with celebrated Australian pianist Amir Farid to perform Grieg’s much-loved Piano Concerto. The concert will also feature Dvorak’s great symphony From the New World and Nicolai’s sparkling Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor, she said. The new initiative will officially launch at 4pm on 21 November at Geelong’s City Hall.

A VOID in the city’s cultural landscape is set to be filled with the launch of Geelong Symphony Orchestra (GSO). The initiative will bring together the region’s best, highly trained classical musicians, while providing music lovers with new opportunities to enjoy world class concerts at local venues. Spear-heading the initiative is well-known local musician Wendy Galloway, president of the GSO’s management committee. Ms Galloway said the orchestra had grown from a groundswell within the music community to harness a growing pool of local talent living and working in the region. “GSO aims to be a dynamic and collaborative ensemble performing inspiring music that enriches the cultural life of the region,” she said. “Geelong has many fine musicians who are experienced and well trained, but have lacked the opportunity to come together as a symphony orchestra under the baton of a skilled professional conductor. “The Geelong Symphony Orchestra will fill this gap and we are delighted that Joannes Roose has agreed to be our inaugural conductor and musical director.” A highly regarded con-

Angie’s convoy on coast today By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT’S A caravan charity convoy and it’s coming to Torquay bearing the musical gifts of beloved local performer Angie Hilton and perennial pop rocker Wendy Stapleton. The convoy is doing the rounds of regional Victoria staging free concerts to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The concerts will be filmed as part of the Channel 10 caravan and camping television show What’s Up Downunder, of which Ms Hilton is a co-host. Ms Stapleton and Ms Hilton will perform at Torquay Foreshore Holiday Park from 6pm today. “I’d love to see Geelong families get behind the What’s Up Downunder Convoy for Charity,” Ms Hilton said. “The free concert is a great day out for the whole family. Pack a picnic, bring a chair and come and have a boogie with myself and the WUDU crew.” The $17 billion dollar caravan industry has again puts its wheel power behind Convoy for Charity, showcasing the newest and most advanced caravans on the market. The convoy has already been to Nagambie and Ballarat and af-

The Convoy, covering 1600km in 10 days, will air as part of the What’s Up Downunder Summer Series nationally on Network Ten throughout January and February. A NEW-AGE music festival will bring together “eco-minded folk” on the Surf Coast this month, organisers have announced. Waves 2 Woods would be a “brilliant day out” at Anglesea, said festival co-founder Alex Boston. The one-day “curated festival” on 21 November would include activities for “families and foodies, live music lovers, yogis, craft beer and wine tipplers and green hearts,” she said. “Waves 2 Woods is all about exploring the areas where we can individually and collectively make a difference. “We have created a fun and engaging day out where people can kick back and share in positive and empowering messages about their role in a sustainable future while having a cracking afternoon with live music and good mates.” Boston said all the festival elements had a “social outcome”. The event’s series of “morning adventures” comprised meditation and yoga, including on standup paddleboard, she said. Festival proceeds would go to charities focused on depression, childhood development and environmental protection. Boston said Waves 2 Woods

DESPITE rumours of unconfirmed property developments in the Geelong CBD, it’s definitely business as usual at the Carlton Hotel. Co-owner John Mole said the Carlton Hotel appeals to all ages. While unassuming on the outside, the interior represents the charm of the art deco era. Timber panelling, open fireplaces and sweeping ceilings all contribute to a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Gallery Lounge is a new social meeting hub and designed for casual dining with family and friends. A feature of the lounge is the resin art booths and display of a local artist’s seascape paintings. With three different sized function areas, there is a room to suit every occasion. The Carl-

Mr Mole stressed how fortunate they were to be surrounded by beautiful wineries. “We have mostly local wines on our extensive wine list, including Oakdene, Scotchsman Hill and Swan Bay,” he said. The Carlton Hotel has a weekly Wednesday parmi night and provides lunch discounts to Geelong CBD workers, with six choices at $13 each. Manifold Podiatry’s Celia Jackson, Jake MacKenzie, Annie Horvath and Simone Leembruggen.

Prevention key at podiatry clinic PREVENTION rather than cure is much more than just a slogan at Manifold Podiatry. Dr Simone Leembruggen says the clinic seeks out the cause of any foot-related problems, rather than just treating the symptom. “When people come in we look at the whole person and look at the cause of the issue, looking at why the problem has arisen,” Dr Leembruggen explains. “Then we look at how to prevent it, to enable people to keep doing things they love doing for as long as they can. “We want to inspire people to value their feet. Feet are impor-

tant - what would we do without them?” Dr Leembruggen says education and empowering people to look after feet and prevent problems is the key. “We talk to clients about understanding what a good shoe is, how to fit shoes properly to make sure people are wearing the right shoes for them.” “So often we see people wearing the wrong size footwear.” Dr Leembruggen says that if clients return with a similar problem, the underlying cause has not been resolved. “We fully address the problem

and make sure clients are not continually coming back with painful conditions.” Manifold Podiatry also offers a revolutionary, safe and effective treatment for fungal nails. “The sooner we can treat fungal nails, the better the success rate. If people wait until the fungal infection worsens, it’s a lot harder to treat,” Dr Leembruggen says. Manifold Podiatry also supports Research for CDKL5 disorder. Manifold Podiatry is at 2/84 Shannon Ave, Geelong West, phone 5298 2746.

AUSTRALIAN Institute of Health and Welfare statistics show that Australia faces a major health crisis, with three out of five people either overweight or obese. Both present serious health consequences such as increased risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease, all of which are preventable. The team at The Firm Slimming & Health Clinic has over 20 years’ experience helping people lose weight, tone muscles and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Electrotherapy plays a crucial part in their program, helping firm and tone muscles. This noninvasive treatment is an excellent way to reshape the body and for centimetre loss. It’s also a safe, painless alternative to surgery or drugs, achieving rapid results with no recovery time needed. Electrotherapy is combined with an infrared treatment and a customised eating plan to ensure optimum weight loss that’s effective, fast, healthy and sustainable in the long-term. Treatments take place in private individual cubicles in a relaxed environment. Silicone pads are strategically placed on targeted areas of the body which sends pulses from the machine’s advanced computerised program, encouraging muscles to contract and relax, stimulating natural movements on specific areas that clients want toned and firmed. Anyone who wants to lose weight but struggled with attending gyms or who has body areas in need of firming and toning should visit The Firm Slimming & Health Clinic.

Renowned for successful patient outcomes without medications or surgery, Foot & Leg Pain Clinics’ services have assisted people with long-term complaints and others told elsewhere that nothing could be done for them. Musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh, who heads the Geelong clinic at Belmont, says healing is not “a one-size-fits-all approach”. “We achieve consistent, successful and long-term outcomes for patients because we take an individual approach considering patients’ lifestyle, overall health and injury concerns, nutritional

And for those not quite ready to place an order, November is the perfect opportunity to trial new meats before Christmas lunch. Business owner Andrew Gunther says Lara Quality Meat’s boneless ham is a company best seller. “During the Christmas season we also sell the traditional full hams on the bone,” Andrew says. “All of our hams are made from top quality Otway Pork, naturally smoked and made fresh in store.” Lara Quality Meats is also taking orders for their popular Christmas free range turkeys. The business also has a “huge range of quality BBQ products” over the summer season. “We have 15 different flavours of sausages and beef, lamb and chicken schazlick,” Andrew says. Lara Quality Meats is open from 6am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 6am to 2pm Saturday at 46 The Centreway, Lara, phone 5282 1471.

The Business (originally named Belmont Hardware) was initially owned & run by Ken Huxley & Family for approximately 25 years. It was then taken over by Trevor Klemm & family for 5 years, and then by myself and wife/family in March, 2003 till present time, which is approximately 13 years. We changed the name of the business to “Belmont House & Hardware” in 2007. During our time here, we have won numerous Belmont Business Awards, not to mention the “Shop Local” Geelong Award in January, 2013, for great Customer Service, nominated by lovely loyal customers (past & present) that have supported us throughout all these years. It is with great trepidation that we close this business, but due to ever increasing running costs, and the struggle to keep afloat, we have had no choice but to make the decision to close, which has been very stressful on us as Belmont has become our 2nd Home. Our only regret in making this decision is disappointing our loyal customers that we have befriended throughout these years, because if it wasn’t for their undying support, we would not have lasted as long as we have considering the massive competition we have had to endure . .... Thanks again to all who have supported us throughout all these years .... Tony, Anna & Family

Bigger Better Bike Power Bike Power has been known in Geelong as the little shop in Belmont for the past 35 years. But after a recent relocation and transformation, Bicycle Centre Belmont is fast becoming known for its extensive range of bicycles, parts and accessories. From electric bikes to BMX, road to mountain bikes, kids’ bikes, cruisers, vintage bikes, scooters and more – it stocks everything needed in a massive new store. Bicycle Centre Belmont also offers professional repair services as a one-stop shop for all cycling needs. Basic servicing starts from just $60. The centre’s mechanics begin with a basic check list of safety requirements. “We then look at what’s required to keep the bike fully functional,” says business owner Shane. The centre’s experienced mechanics know what’s needed for cyclists of all levels. Bicycle Centre Belmont caters for many different riders, from children’s first balance bike right through to professional athletes striving for ultimate performance and precision. “We also do the simple things, from changing tyres right up to disassembling bikes and rebuilds,” Shane says. Quick turn-around is guaranteed and same-day servicing is often offered, depending on the season. “We support local athletes from multiple disciplines of cycling, who are recommended to us by their performance coaches who appreciate our professional service and knowledge in getting the right bike-fit and setup,” Shane says. “We utilise the Shimano Bike-Fit program along with our own professional expertise to ensure that every rider gets the best comfort and performance out of their bike.” Bicycle Centre Belmont is at 119 High St, phone 5244 3650 or visit bicyclecentrebelmont.com.au.

Gary Keleman has given 33 years of his best personal service to city IT’S THE personal touch that sets Keleman Motors apart. The personal service includes a drop off and pick up service to the city. Gary uses only genuine parts in his new-car repair and servicing work. “This way our customers can be sure their factory warranties are not affected.” He says customers should be able to receive dealer level service without paying dealer level prices. “We’re always happy to give a quote so the customer knows exactly what they are up for,” he says. “HOW do I talk to my parents about this?” is just one common question asked by youth seeking support from Espod Geelong Inc. Meanwhile, parents often ask “Is my child’s behaviour normal?” That’s why Espod Geelong is hosting the upcoming seminar “Talking With Young People About...” which will cover topics of adolescent development. Program manager Kate Tuohey says Espod has invited four independent guest speakers to the event. “Many parents feel they are not equipped to have these sorts of conversations,” Kate says.

“We want to help people understand how to talk with young people, not to young people.” Kate says talking about these issues relates to “protection and prevention”. “Not having these conversations exposes young people to risk,” she says. But Espod Geelong believes the seminar extends beyond its application to parents and their teenagers. “It also applies to health workers and people of all ages,” Kate says. “People will be more informed about what’s normal and expected behaviour of young people. They

will also learn what services they can access to help support their young person.” Renowned guest speaker Les Twentyman will speak about substance use. “It’s a key topic because we are talking about the ice epidemic in Geelong,” Kate says. Supported by the Real Needs Grant Program, $30 tickets can be pre-purchased by contacting 5223 2425. Subsidised and free tickets are available. The event will be held from 10am to 4pm at The National Wool Museum, 26 Moorabool Street, Geelong on Sunday 15 November.

IndySport Blues day for Geelong bite

On the

GEELONG Cricket Club failed to get a start last Saturday due to the thunderstorms that rolled through in the early hours of the morning. That means its match against Carlton at Princes Park will revert to a one-day fixture tomorrow. While the Cats have lost Joel Davies to injury, they will hope to have Australian star Aaron Finch back in the line-up, the hard hitting opener being named last week on the back of a massive double hundred for an Australian XI against the touring New Zealand side. Currently sitting at 14th place on the ladder, Geelong need to win this to keep any hope of competing in this season’s finals alive. The same weather that interrupted Geelong’s hopes of getting on last week caused major disruptions in the Geelong Cricket Association last week, with just two games able to be completed. Ironically, the two sides that lost last week, Geelong City and St Josephs, clash this round, and with the reigning premiers St Josephs yet to win a game after three rounds, it’s crunch time. The Joeys would have been confident of defending 244 out at Lara, but a magnificent hundred to Andy Hughes put paid to that. Geelong City also would have hoped for a better

Local

cricket Jim Timberlake

showing against Grovedale, but could only manage a measly 104 chasing the Tigers 193, Gareth Yelland the star, the veteran taking the amazing figures of 5/11 from 14 overs. The key here will be City’s ability to call on more from their lesser lights, and not expect Richie Oliver to continue to bat them to winning positions. If they can’t, St Josephs will be too strong and record an easy win. EAST BELMONT v Newtown and Chilwell, GROVEDALE v South Barwon, NORTH GEELONG Leopold, MURGHEBOLUC v Bell Post Hill, Geelong West v LARA. In Division Two, Torquay and Modewarre will be looking to stay in touch with the top six when they clash at Spring Creek Reserve. Torquay are sitting in ninth place on 6 points,

while Modewarre aren’t faring much better, sitting seventh with 9 points. For the loser of this one, it’s going to be a battle to regroup and put some points in the bank prior to the Christmas break. While Modewarre haven’t been setting the world on fire, they should have enough depth in their side to win this one. MARSHALL v Manifold Heights, Thomson v HIGHTON, ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Alexander Thomson, Waurn v ST PETERS, NEWCOMB & DISTRICT v Bell Park. Two of the stronger sides of recent years in Division Three, Meredith and Shelford, face off this round at Meredith Reserve. Shelford are in second spot, while Meredith are in fifth. However, a closer look reveals the Rams have actually won two games while the Bullants have only won one, the fact that it was an outright win, and having had a bye already, has elevated them higher than perhaps they might otherwise be. Shelford have had the wood over their rivals of recent times, and should be too strong once again. INVERLEIGH v Corio Bay, Guild St Mary’s v WINCHELSEA, TEESDALE v Corio, Lethbridge v LITTLE RIVER, Bannockburn bye.

Mario serves up 2016 pro dream

By ALANA MITCHELSON RISING tennis star Mario Matejcek has just turned pro, with big plans for 2016. The Waurn Ponds resident said he had fond memories of growing up in Geelong and taking private lessons before deciding to take tennis seriously at age 14. Now 21, he broke into the top 86 of the Australian men’s rankings in September, achieving a career high. “Turning pro has been my biggest achievement so far,” he said. “It’s been great to see how strong the players are. Even when you’re losing you’re being exposed to such a high level of tennis.” Since playing his first overseas tournament at age 16, Matajcek has travelled to Serbia, Croatia, France, Hungary, Egypt and Turkey. He trains four to six hours a day, six days a week. But with success comes sacrifice. Matejcek has had to give parties a miss and gave up his social life early to dedicate time and energy to his sport. He had some valuable advice for young guns on the juniors circuit who hoped to also make the transition into the men’s league. “You don’t really live a normal life. You have to grow up quickly,” he said. “And it’s important to be around people who tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. “You have to want to be the best and have a lot of courage because you’ll often be travelling alone.” Matejcek’s coach, Jay Salter, will join him on tour next year with the aim of boosting his professional ranking. He hoped to be in the top 700 by the end of 2016. And all going well, Matejcek will edge closer to earning a wild card into the Australian Open, a Grand Slam event, the following summer. He said his long-term goal was to break the top 50 of the ATP tour. Matejcek is a favourite to win Tasmania’s Glenorchy Open this month.

Snapper, squid bagged in bays DARREN Brockaway fished calm conditions on Monday morning for snapper at one of his reliable marks from past seasons off Clifton Springs. Patience paid off when line screamed off his reel at the start of a frantic session. Brockie went on to boat several snapper to 6.5kg on silver whiting baits. Nearby, the spoil grounds off Leopold fished well for anglers casting soft plastics for pinkie snapper averaging 40cm and the odd pike of almost 1m. As a storm eased on Saturday morning I began putting in a few hours casting plastics in the vicinity of Alcoa Pier. Upon arrival I found large numbers of Australian salmon to 1kg and pinkies to 55cm holding underneath and willing to take five-inch Gulp jerk shads worked slowly along the bottom. Daniel and Lisa Baden fished Queenscliff for squid last Friday, making a few moves to find their quarry. Eventually they had little trouble boating squid to 2.5kg. Last week the squid seemed spread right around from the mouth of Swan Bay to the grass beds left of the harbour and further round to the bight, with most anglers reporting the best results from clean, deeper water. Tackleworld Geelong’a Adam Van Der Lugt fished Queenscliff Harbour again at first light Monday, making use of a kayak to cover more water. Casting soft plastics among the moored boats and other structure, Adam bagged silver trevally to 45cm, with the last of the incoming tide the most productive time. Anglers reported mixed bags from the Barwon River estuary. The Sheepwash section produced mullet and whiting, although anglers with live bait or working soft plastics banked bream and mulloway. The entrance to the estuary fished well for whiting on a change of tide, with some nudging 42cm. Pippies did the job. Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, anglers found the 40m mark worth drifting for snapper and flathead. Some anglers marked kingfish holding deep were unable to tempt them to bite. Easing wind along the Surf Coast allowed anglers to hit rock platforms for salmon. Brian Long and John Mole fished the rocks around Lorne, landing great numbers of salmon to 2kg on metal slugs. Freshwater reports were scarce. The Barwon River from Queen’s Park to Buckley’s Falls gave up redfin to 800g on lures worked tight around structure. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir’s redfin sporadically came on the bite along the main rockwall. However, when they finally came on the chew they measured in at 45cm. The next week should fire for snapper along the channel and over the spoil grounds off Leopold, especially around tide changes. If the wind’s up then the Barwon River estuary should be a great place to shelter while banking a fish or two. Freshwater anglers should look to Wurdee Boluc Reservoir for beasty redfin.

Aussie, Kiwi star gymnasts to compete in Geelong HUNDREDS of Australia’s best gymnasts will compete in Geelong over the next week. Competitors will contest three championships covering state, interstate and national titles from Saturday until 15 November. The event would feature international-level competitors and include entrants from New Zealand, said Gymnastics Victoria chief Jamie Parsons. The event would be particularly

important to gymnasts in the Geelong region, she said. “Gymnastics Victoria is working hard to increase participation and investment in new gymnastics facilities for the community of Geelong and surrounding suburbs. I encourage the community of Geelong to the show their support for the growth of gymnastics and enjoy the gymnastics competition and entertainment on show in November.” Organisers said leading competitors set to compete in Geelong

included Australian senior international gymnast Alexandra Eade, on the comeback trail from a wrist injury, and talented Kiwi Charleis Kingston-White. Gymnastics Victoria events and marketing manager Jacqui Godfrey tipped a “carnival-like atmosphere” with 350 athletes at the Geelong Arena. “These national-level gymnasts have competed in recent qualifying competitions to get the opportunity to represent their club at this event

and they all should be very proud of their achievements,” Godfrey said. Organisers said daily passes to the Women’s Gymnastics Australian Classic, Victorian Championships and Trans Bass Challenge would be available at the arena door. Tickets cost $11.50 for concession-card holders, $18 for adults and $40 for families. More information is available at Gymnastics Victoria’s website or by phoning 9005 4770.
