DANDENONG SHOW

All the drama and details in print THE Dandenong Show and the Dandenong Journal have been inextricably linked for 144 years. The Journal, which was founded in 1865, has reported on every show since the inaugural carnival in 1872. It is hard to imagine the community pride and sense of anticipation that would have surrounded that first show held at the Dandenong Market site on 7 March, 1872. In those days the market site was located in the area bounded by Foster, Thomas, Mason and Walker streets. Families from around the district dressed up in their Sunday best, hooked up their horse and jinker and set off for a day out at the show. The top prize on offer was three pounds for the farmer who turned out the best draught horse. There were 301 entires that first year, including two casks of colonial beer, 42 horses, 40 cattle, 6 sheep, 27 pigs, 16 cheeses, 14 butter, 52 fruit, 8 flowers, 7 honey, 1 egg, 18 poultry, 49 farm produce. Total prize money up for grabs was 24 pounds. However, the year was also tinged with sadness when the society lost its foundation president William Keys, who drowned while trying to rescue cattle in floods at Bangholme. By 1874, the prize money had leapt to 145 pounds, and in 1876 the show had a vice-regal visitor when Victorian Governor Sir G. Bowan attended the carnival. By 1888 the show had become so popular that a new exhibition hall was built. The South Bourke and Morning-

ton Journal, as the Journal was then known, reported that the new building was “substantial, commodious and handsome, situated on an elevated site, commanding an excellent view of the surrounding country and midway between the centre of the township and the railway station. A long-felt want is now supplied by the beautiful building just completed, which undoubtedly has few equals in the colony.“ Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society secretary Lynne Ferris said

photographer could always be seen roaming the showgrounds, interviewing showgirls, woodchoppers, livestock owners, show jumpers, flower arrangers and show patrons,” Mrs Ferris said. Show president Ricky Ferris encouraged everyone to enjoy a day out at the show. “On behalf of the society, I wish to thank all the volunteers, stewards, judges, community groups, stall holders, long-time contractors, Showmen’s

Guild, generous sponsors, exhibitors, and the hard working members of our committee – we would not be able to put on the show without them,” he said. The partnership between the Dandenong Show and the Journal, two of the region’s oldest institutions, will continue this year with the Journal presenting a special stall at the show on Saturday and publishing a comprehensive wrap-up of all the action online and in Monday’s printed edition.

DANDENONG SHOW

New-look home for the kids DANDENONG Show regulars can expect a revamped, free animal nursery this year. In the words of organiser Kate Reedy, the nursery has “entered the 21st century”. The main differences are a more open, renovated home with more pens open for children to hug and cuddle about 40 of their favourite young chickens, ducks, rabbits, sheep, goats, guinea pigs and other farmyard regulars. The attraction for many children is they haven’t handled such animals before. “It’s hands on and 100 per cent free,” Ms Reedy says. Under the same roof will be sheep shearing, Angola goats shows and other demonstations. The regular guess-the-weight of an adult cow competition also returns, with the winner taking home $50. The Reedy family has a fourgeneration association with the show - three of those generations being past show presidents. Kate used to herself enter horses for exhibition, her mother and grandmother submitting pancakes and sponges in the cake sections. She has witnessed many changes at the show over the past 40 years. One has been the lesser emphasis on animals and handcrafts in favour of the “commercialised” rides and showbags. But perhaps this year’s bigger animal nursery will help redress that balance for the remainder of this century.

Crunch time for the best Anzac bickies

Jo-Anne Duggan’s goat Louise shows some personality.

Goats have appeal all of their own Margaret Weightman and John Wells tuck into Anzac biscuits. 144685 Picture: ROB CAREW THE search is on for the best Anzac bikkie at this year’s Dandenong Show. A $200 prize is on offer for the biscuits that take the cake. Art and craft pavilion chairwoman Margaret Weightman said the competition would commemorate the Anzac Centenary. “That’s why we’re doing it,

“It’s a visual thing as well as having a taste. It’s up to the judge - every judge is different of course.” Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL Sub-Branch president John Wells will award the $200 prize at 2pm on Saturday 14 November in the art and craft pavilion.

On show at Dandenong will be about 50 specimens from breeds such as the AngloNubian - known for their pronounced noses and floppy ears, the white Saanen, the blackand-white striped British Alpine, the hirsute Angoras, and the brown-and-white striped Toggenburgs. There are also two Australian breeds - the Australian-bred black Melaans, and the self-descriptive Australian Brown. They will be judged on their milk yields, their udders and their “confirmation” - which covers their gait, grooming and

state of their hooves. Most of the show specimens will be females - or does - quite simply, because the bucks tend to stink. Ms Duggan still keeps two British Alpine does Thelma and Louise - named in tribute to the film - though they are too old for show. “People who show goats genuinely love their animals,” Ms Duggan said. “They are also absolute nutters, that’s the truth of it.” This year is the Year of the Goat - but that doesn’t bother Ms Duggan. “I’m a science teacher - I just deal in facts.”

ONCE a goat person, always a goat person. So says self-confessed devotee Jo-Anne Duggan, who heads the goat section at the Dandenong Show. Ms Duggan remains hooked by their large, distinct personalities. “They’re quite personable animals. Cute. Not a high maintenance animal. “And despite popular perceptions, they don’t eat everything.” Since a young age, Ms Duggan has had one or two goats. She says they prefer the company of another goat, and not being chained up by them-

Tak’s mayor triumph By CASEY NEILL COUNCILLOR Heang Tak has emerged from a 10-day storm of controversy wearing the Greater Dandenong mayoral robes. He received seven votes to Cr Peter Brown’s four in the final vote for the coveted role at the annual statutory council meeting on Thursday 5 November.

Cr Brown at the 26 October council meeting announced plans to lodge complaints against Crs Tak and Youhorn Chea with the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate, alleging misconduct. “It’s played out as it’s played out,” Cr Brown said after the mayoral vote. He said the outcome would have been the same regardless of his accusations.

Cr Brown was the only one of Cr Tak’s peers who did not applaud his victory, instead sitting cross-armed and red-faced. He told the Journal he had misgivings about the appointment. Cr Tak declined to comment on the pending investigation, intead focusing on the busy year ahead. His heavily-pregnant wife Manette was absent from the meeting, due to

give birth to their second child at any time. The new arrival will join Lawson, almost two, but Cr Tak said juggling family, work and council commitments wouldn’t be a problem. “We do have a plan - extended family,“ he said. “My parents and my parents-in-law have volunteered.” Cr Tak said it was “a privilege to be

mayor for this multicultural city“. “More than 50 per cent of our residents were born overseas and I’m one of them,” he said. The Cambodian-born lawyer has called Greater Dandenong home for more than 19 years and was elected to council in 2012. “I am very proud to lead this city. I love this city,” he said. Parents’ hit run plea By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE parents of a Springvale man killed in a hit-and-run collision in Noble Park last year have called for the driver involved to come forward. Peter Danh, 36, was found dead on Prior Road, about 10.20pm on 11 September 2014. The vehicle involved has been captured on residential CCTV at the road, though unable to be identified. Parents Trung and Anh Danh fronted a press conference on Thursday 5 November in the hope that they could get some answers and perhaps move on from the tragedy. “He was really nice,” a distraught mother Anh said. “He loved me, I loved him.” The father Trung said: “Every day I

Peter Danh 146513 can’t forget. It’s like yesterday my son had an accident.” Detective Acting Inspector Bradley McArthur, of the police’s Major Colli-

sions Unit, revealed new details about what happened to Mr Danh. He had been in the process of walking home from a friend’s place, then laid down intoxicated in the middle of the lit residential road where he was struck by a vehicle at “relatively low speed”. Det McArthur said it appeared the driver had tried to avoid Mr Danh, who suffered significant fatal head injuries in the collision. Initially, the Homicide Squad investigated for several days what was thought to be an intentional act. That theory was dismissed - a disturbance in the street thought to have preceded the incident was later attributed to witnesses’ reaction to Mr Danh’s body. Det McArthur appealed to the driver’s “conscience” and vowed that this matter would not go away.

He said the driver may have been deterred from contacting police due to hearing about the homicide investigation, but it was now treated as a hit-and-run matter. “There wasn’t any sort of poor driving, apart from not stopping to report it or help the victim.” He said hit-run drivers were sometimes motivated not to contact police because they were driving unlicensed, their car was unregistered or they were drunk or drug-affected at the time. “Even those things are minor compared to not stopping to help a human being. “We have a family that has been suffering since September last year. “If they contact us, it can help the family move on, provide some answers and let justice take its course.” Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au

Tak steps up as new mayor From page 1 He said he had connected with people from all walks of life during his time on council and would do his best to represent each and every one of them. Cr Tak said he was looking forward to the Tatterson Park upgrade, continuing the Springvale Civic Space masterplanning and Springvale steetscape improvements. “I know that the year won’t be without its challenges,” he said, highlighting impending rate-capping. Outgoing mayor Sean O’Reilly said his door was always open to Cr Tak. He thanked the council team

that supported him during his term and his family for understanding his physical and mental absences. “I was always thinking about what was coming up next,“ he said. “It was quite hard to switch off.“ Cr O’Reilly said his highlights from the past year were opening the Ross Reserve Skate Park, Springvale level crossing removal project and the Springvale Asian Gateway and naming Harmony Square. “There are many things still to be done that we can achieve as a united group,” he said. Cr Roz Blades nominated Cr Tak for the mayoral role and Cr

Chea seconded the motion. Cr Matthew Kirwan nominated Cr Brown with support from Cr Maria Sampey, Cr Loi Truong nominated himself with Cr Angela Long as seconder, while Cr John Kelly put his hand up with Cr Brown his seconder. Each candidate was eliminated through a show of hands until one had a clear majority. Crs Truong, Sampey and Kirwan voted for Cr Brown while Cr Tak had the support of Crs Chea, Memeti, Tak, Blades, Long, Kelly and O’Reilly. “It’s fantastic to see a full chamber and people taking interest in their city and the democratic process,“ Cr Kirwan said.

Facebook party ends for teen A TEEN was knocked unconscious when a brawl broke out at a ‘Facebook party’ in Springvale. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said officers at 11.18pm on Friday 30 October attended an outof-control party at Springvale Reserve, corner Erickson and Newcomen roads. He said the party had been advertised on Facebook and a fight involving a large crowd of youths spilled onto the street. “Numerous people were hit by flying bottles and other projectiles,” he said. Det Sgt Kirton said the crowd dispersed when police arrived. He said at least four people were assaulted and robbed of their mobile phones. Officers found one victim, an 18-yearold Glen Waverley man, unconscious. A 20-year-old Doveton man suffered lacerations to his head, a 15-year-old boy from Blackburn suffered abrasions and bruising, a 15-year-old Mulgrave boy suffered facial bruising and a 17-year-old girl from Oakleigh South reported minor injuries. Greater Dandenong CIU investigations into the affray and robbery are ongoing.

Hospitalised after mutiple stab wounds He said a road rage incident occurred and another driver punched the victim in the head while he was still in his car. The victim then allegedly got out and remonstrated in Oldham Lane, where he was slashed multiple times with a box cutter. An ambulance transferred

World’s

him to The Alfred in stable condition where he is recovering from non-life threatening injuries.Police arrested a 22-yearold Dandenong man over the incident. Det Sgt Kirton said inquiries were ongoing and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

SPRINGVALE Learning and Activities Centre has been part of Leah Douglas’s life since she was four years old. “For whatever reason I started doing calisthenics there,” she said. “That wasn’t really my thing - that didn’t last long.” But her connection to the thenSpringvale Youth Club has lasted. In October, at age 43 and as committee president she attended her 21st SLAC annual general meeting. “It’s such an important part of Springvale, and it’s energising to be making a difference,” she said. Leah moved on from calisthenics to jazz ballet, gymnastics and more.

NEW

“It was just one of those places that was always fun,” she said. “As a teenager I even worked there. “On top of doing activities there I was an assistant gymnastics coach.” She taught dance and lent a hand in reception. “I was co-opted onto the committee when I was 22 and I’ve been there ever since,” she said. “I haven’t lived in Springvale for the past 18 years, but I just thought that what the centre does is important. “I’d always been raised with that ethos of volunteering and putting back in.” SLAC has been a family affair for the Douglases. Leah’s mum Beverley this year won the Greater Dandenong

Citizen of the Year Award for her 38plus year dedication to SLAC. The organisation first opened its doors in 1945 as the Springvale Youth Club. It changed to Springvale Community Centre before taking on its current title in 2007. Research into its history is underway to celebrate its 70th anniversary, and stories and photographs will form a publication. “To achieve that we need to fundraise,” Leah said. SLAC is also fund-raising to replace its stage curtain, which is more than 40 years old and will cost $10,000 to replace.

“Our biggest challenges these days are challenges in getting funding,” Leah said. “A lot of our funding is dependent on government.” She’s tried approaching local businesses for support and partnerships. “We’re always open to new ideas and suggestions and exploring new things,” she said. “That’s how we can maintain our relevance. “We’ve always been a centre that moves with the community and the needs of the community. “Our main purpose is to provide those services for disadvantaged people to help them help themselves.”

Another challenge is the ageing Osborne Avenue building that SLAC calls home. “If we were able to have a newer and bigger facility we would be able to fill it with activities for the local community,” Leah said. “We do have hopes of different developments that are going to be happening on the old Springvale council site. “No one knows what’s happening with that yet. SLAC will hold a dinner dance from 7pm on Sunday 15 November at Maxim Restaurant in Springvale. Contact SLAC on 9547 2647 to get involved with the history project or make a donation.

Stake attack By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN is facing years in jail after repeatedly kicking and wielding a garden stake on another man lying on the ground at Dandenong’s Pop Up Park. Nhial Nhial, 27, pleaded guilty to intentionally causing injury, affray, and committing an indictable offence while on bail over the incident on the Foster Street sports court at 9.30am on 10 October. The public gallery at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 November was warned about the violence of CCTV footage shot from opposite the Dandenong railway station before it was shown to the court. It depicted a fight between a shirtless Nhial and the victim, who appeared armed with a bottle. During the dispute, an unknown male hands Nhial a wooden garden stake, which with one blow felled the victim. As the victim lay on the

ground, Nhial struck him with the stake a further seven times and then kicked the motionless victim’s head twice. Nhial wielded the stake three more times, each time lifting the stake above his head before delivering the blows. According to a police summary, the victim appeared “helpless” and unable to defend himself during the “extremely violent” attack. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Kimberley Hawkins said no-one in the park or the busy transport hub came to the victim’s aid at the time, bar for paramedics who arrived about 30 minutes later. The victim was taken to Dandenong Hospital with a cut to his head, a broken left hand and an injured leg. He was subsequently cleared of serious head injuries, which led to police dropping more serious assault charges. Nhial, who stayed in the park until paramedics and po-

lice arrived, was taken to Dandenong police station. He was on bail at the time for cannabis possession, obstructing an ambulance officer, resisting police, public drunkenness and abusive language in public. The accused gave a no comment to police interview. Nhial’s defence lawyer said there looked to be a “fair fight up to a certain point”. “But clearly there’s a point that Mr Nhial loses any protection of the law for his conduct.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen adjourned sentencing to allow Nhial’s defence lawyer to prepare mitigating material. “From what I’ve seen on the vision and the priors, I don’t think two years (jail) and a community corrections order is sufficient.” Nhial was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 December.

DEMOLITION is now well underway at the former Greater Dandenong Council offices in Springvale. The council relocated to the new Dandenong Civic Centre in March last year and the old building was deemed unfit for other uses. Demolition is to be completed by the end of the year and is the first stage of the Springvale Civic Space Masterplan, which will be rolled out over several years. Fencing around the demo-

lition site has rendered 50 car parking spaces unavailable. The council said Springvale Library and Springvale Town Hall should not be impacted but the customer service centre, two meeting rooms and a playground might need to close for short periods. Temporary fencing will remain once the building is demolished while temporary new paths are created and grass is planted and allowed to grow. The council started community consultation regarding the precinct in 2011.

The city hall and supper room is to be upgraded, a new library is to be built and a new Learning and Activity Hub would provide flexible community spaces. The chambers will be retained as community meeting rooms, the war memorial will feature in the new precinct design and there’ll be more open space. There’ll be no loss of car parking spaces, and the Springvale and District Historical Society will still have a home.

Keysborough lacks much vital infrastructure KEYSBOROUGH’S population has exploded in the past 10 years. Back in October 2012, then-Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy called Keysborough one of the largest infill projects undertaken in Melbourne’s south-east corridor. With population growth, comes strain on existing infrastructure. In 2011, without taking into consideration this population growth, the Department of Education closed a number of local public schools. Public transport is also a major issue for the community, with infrequent services and no connection to train stations or the new Dandenong South industrial estates. With the closure of Maralinga Primary School in January this year, Keysborough South Action Group (KSAG) was formed to advocate for additional public school provisioning for the region. As we spoke to residents about the primary school campaign, further infrastructure issues were raised such as the lack of public transport options, community centre facilities, day care and kindergarten. Ten years ago in 2005, the first residents began moving into the new residential estates. The second major boom began in 2010 and since the 2011 Census an additional 2400 households have been constructed.

COMMUNITY

VOICE NINA KELLY

KEYSBOROUGH SOUTH ACTION GROUP SPOKESWOMAN

There are about 1150 school-aged children living in the Keysborough South community. The overall plan was to have the area populated by 2023, however developers like Somerfield are seven years ahead in land sales and are scheduled to be completed by the end of next year. These strong land sales have forced missing infrastructure already in high demand into a critical tipping point for residents. The community banded together and presented a petition with 1084 signatures in June this year, requesting a school be opened for the 2018 school year. We want the school opened in 2018 to allow today’s three-year-old to attend Prep in safe walking distance from their home. As a community, we find it disappointing to say there have been a number of public primary and

secondary school closures in the area within recent years given the significant population growth. This includes the former Keysborough Primary, Maralinga Primary and Coomoora Secondary College. Why do we want a local school? With safety being the number one concern for locals, they want a local state primary school that is within walking distance, so children do not have to cross two major roads - one an arterial road - each with six lanes of traffic to attend school every day. A VicRoads report from 2013 found 33,000 vehicles used the Dandenong Bypass daily. The volume of vehicles is set to increase once the next link of the extension opens next year. KSAG’s advocacy partnership with Greater Dandenong Council has been productive. The council is not responsible for school provisioning and could have walked away. However the council conducted a study in March on behalf of residents, identifying three possible sites for a primary school. In September, the council, KSAG and Department of Education met to discuss the school. We have also met with Shadow Education Minister Nick Wakeling and joined the Our Children Our Schools alliance. Following on from these meetings, a formal presentation as to when the school should be opened will be made to Education Minister James Merlino later this year.

Funding will be determined in next May’s State Budget. KSAG’s second focus is the bus route extension. Keysborough South residents are petitioning for a bus route because there is no public transport within three kilometres and it’s isolating the community. It was an election promise made by a number of parties in last year’s State Election, however we still have no bus. People should have access to essential services. Again, residents have to cross the six-lane arterial the Dandenong Bypass to reach the closest bus stops. For young people and those with disabilities, it’s limiting job opportunities and access to TAFE or university. Our main goals with the petition are to link Keysborough South residents to Mordialloc railway station, the Dandenong rail line, the Dandenong South industrial estate, a new shopping centre on Hutton Road and the Parkmore Shopping Centre. The council has constructed the bus stops and the bus company is ready to go, yet the State Government has not approved funding in this year’s budget. This will be the second petition from the community. The last petition was run by another community group. Find KSAG on Facebook, at a council forum at Springers Leisure Centre on Wednesday 11 November or at a bus forum on Wednesday 18 November at a venue to be confirmed.

LOOKING BACK pleased to receive reliable information regarding others who have enlisted with a view to adding further names to the Roll of Honour. 50 years ago 3 November, 1965 The audience did not help either The obvious lack of people at the opening night of the ‘Curious Savage’ by John Patrick, at the Mechanics Institute, Frankston, last week made it difficult for members of the Frankston Group to overcome their first night nerves. Unfortunately, the people who attended did little to help the

cast ease into their exacting roles. Somehow a little boy, whose enthusiasm for the visual aspects of the theatre got the better of him, became entangled in one of the exit curtains, and started to slowly rotate, the finished product resembled a Christmas bon bon much to the annoyance of the cast members. 20 years ago 6 November, 1995 Opera singer opens studio Cheryl MacDonald, daughter of the former Dandenong Mayor and Mayoress Ian and Pat MacDonald, who

has enjoyed a successful career as an operatic lyric coloratura soprano has opened her own voice studio in Frankston. Cheryl’s beautiful voice has been heard at many Dandenong Mayoral functions and Mayoress’s receptions over the years. Cheryl has now completed her Associate Diploma of Arts in Opera and Music Theatre, graduating with distinctions in every subject. 5 years ago 1 November, 2010 Tour spices up our city In the past three years, more than

1000 people have explored Dandenong by taking part in a cultural tour. The tours began in 2006 with the launch of a Little India Tour by Greater Dandenong Council. From there they have grown to include four tours highlighting everything from the Afghan precinct, Little India, the region’s delis and groceries and the rich array of cuisines on offer. We are introducing participants to new areas, and new cultures. It really opens people’s eyes to what we have here in Dandenong. Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

A MAN is fighting child pornography offences over images of baby girls in nappies that were found on his i-Phone. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Aimee Ryland told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 November that the images had been uploaded from a ‘synched photos’ album within the man’s Facebook account. She said the accused had denied knowing about the images, blaming either the man’s nineyear-old son or a “vindictive expartner”. Neither of those parties had yet made a statement to police, the court was told. Defence lawyer Bernard Keating said the man had told Greater Dandenong police’s Sexual Offences and Child Abuse In-

vestigation Team he was receiving notifications that his son was using his phone and Facebook account. Mr Keating also raised doubts whether the images were child porn. He said the subjects, due to their youth, had a cognitive inability to portray themselves in a sexualised manner. He paraphrased a US Supreme Court statement on the theme that it was difficult to define but “I know it when I see it”. “It’s in the eye of the beholder.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said his preliminary view was at least five of the images sexualised the subjects - through they were wearing nappies. One of the photos for example lacked “prior innocence”.

“She’s on the floor of a lounge room with a heater in the background.” Mr Vandersteen said the other images should be viewed not in isolation, but as a collection of similar images of similarly aged female babies. He said the general community would find objection with the images. “It’s open for a magistrate to conclude that (it’s pornography). “It’s unusual you see children in these poses.” Mr Vandersteen said he had not yet been provided details on when or how the images were uploaded onto the phone. The matter was adjourned for further mention at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 December.

Victim run down by stolen car A MAN was run over by a stolen car during a road rage incident in Noble Park. The 30-year-old Altona Meadows man suffered a badly broken leg and head injuries and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said the victim was exiting the 7-Eleven at Corrigan Road and

Princes Highway about 2.45am on Monday 2 November. A Volkswagon Golf hatch stolen from Glen Waverley earlier that night sideswiped the victim’s car and an altercation occurred between both drivers. The man behind the wheel of the stolen car got out and fled on foot. The victim gave chase, but Det Sgt Kirton said a nearby parked vehicle sprang into ac-

tion, struck the man and threw him over its bonnet. He said police recovered the forensically examined Golf but believed two other stolen vehicles were involved - a small silver Kia sedan and a black Honda Civic sedan. Det Sgt Kirton appealed for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

CARLEY Scott couldn’t speak more highly of her childhood in Dandenong North. It set her up for success, she says - and she’s had plenty of it. The 34-year-old is the CEO of the Developing East Arnhem not-for-profit in Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory. “I flew up in February - just in time for two cyclones,” she said. “It’s about 660 kilometres east of Darwin. It’s an extremely remote location, but well-serviced.” Ms Scott had worked in economic development in Victoria for several years. “I was a national director of Economic Development Australia and that was a really good experience as well,” she said. She took this opportunity following the curtailment of a Rio Tinto refinery. “You’ve basically got a mining town that was starting to look at ‘what’s the future for the town and the people of the town and that area’,” she said. “You have to hit the ground running there. “It was about establishing the company quickly and trying to get some runs on the board for the community there. “Like most communities, they’ve got a vision of their own and things that they really want to see happen, so it’s about facilitating those goals. “Much like Dandenong where you’ve got a range of manufacturing roles and you want to make sure you’ve got diverse employment, in this area as well it’s really about saying ‘not only do you have

Carley Scott aims for great heights. 146100 manufacturing - or up there, mining - what else do you bring to the table? “Tourism for them is a big winner because it’s such a beautiful location. “They’ve got fantastic cultural assets as well.” Agriculture is also on the table. “It’s an interesting thing coming from Victoria and then going to a place like the Northern Territory because you get a lot of similar stories about wanting to diversify your economy and make sure there’s jobs for people coming forward,” she said. Ms Scott returned to her home town while in Victoria representing

the Northern Territory in the National Archery Competition in Morwell. She won a gold medal and a silver medal using the low bow - after only a year in the sport. “About a year ago I thought ‘I’ve always wanted to give it a go, I’ll try it’,” she said. “I’m loving it.” Ms Scott recalled her time at Dandenong North Primary School, swimming at Dandenong Oasis and working at the Pancake Parlour. “My brother played football for Dandenong North Football Club and I did the boundary umpiring,” she said. “It’s just a great place to grow up.

“There was a really strong sense of community. “It’s a place I’m really proud to have grown up in and tell people about it really proudly as well, and I love coming back because there are so many positive connections.” Ms Scott’s been excited to watch central Dandenong’s evolution in recent years. “You just know there’s more people getting to call Dandenong home which is great,” she said. “Growing up here, you’ve got a whole range of opportunities to grow and learn from which is great. “None of these things have come easily. You have to work at them.”

A LAWYER nearly made a diabolical error by mistakenly booking himself to work at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Melbourne Cup Eve. What was he thinking nearly depriving himself of a four-day weekend? Anyway, he patched up matters by concocting an email to the court the night before. Told them something like he still had a few things to work through with the prosecution. May take another four weeks. The only catch was that the clients blurted to the judge that the lawyer was off on “personal service leave”, that he’d forgotten he’d planned a long weekend away. “But he hasn’t said that here in the email,” the judge thundered. The lawyer was then ordered by the court to provide the “real reason” for his absence by email. The judge asked the client to send on a message: “Tell (him) we won’t be accepting any further adjournments.” THERE was a procession of deviant drivers applying to get their licences back at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. One was a middle-aged man who’d been off the road for 18 months for clocking 160km/h in an 80km/h zone while dragging off with another driver on Wellington Road, Rowville.

He’d also been caught speeding more than 25km/h over the speed limit twice before that. Of course, he was a totally different bloke now. Newly-minted family man. Why would you do such a thing at your age, the judge asked. The man replied he was feeling extremely emotional at the time. “If you killed my family I wouldn’t care what problems you were having in your life at the time,” the judge retorted. Still, the application was granted. FORGET the new mayor - Jo Thorn was the star at the Greater Dandenong annual statutory council meeting on Thursday 5 November. Thanks and applause flooded in for the executive assistant to the city’s mayor and councillors. “Jo’s organisational skills are par excellence,” outgoing mayor Sean O’Reilly said. “Jo never gave me a wrong address ... which is quite a feat when you think of the amount of detail Jo has to manage.” Cr Jim Memeti said: “Jo’s the one that runs this place.” And she proved her worth as Cr Heang Tak accepted the mayoral robes from Cr O’Reilly. “Take your jacket off,” Jo advised. “You’ll get hot under the robes.”

TODAY, as is normal, I went to Springvale Safeway because service is great and they have fantastic staff who go out of their way to assist in whatever way than can. Today, parking as we normally do outside the shop in Springvale Road, we noticed parking meters installed. This action was undertaken by the so-called greater City of Dandenong. I believe this is yet a money-raising avenue for the so-called city. Our rates are dear enough as is without extra for parking. Even though it’s only $1.20 per hour it’s the inconvenience of parking the car, getting

out then back in to place the ticket. After speaking to the mayor he told me it was to ease congestion in the area, and I was informed that there is a multi-tier parking facility further into the shopping centre - a good 200 to 300 yards from Safeway. The shopping strip in Springvale is mostly made up of small businesses so their trade will be badly affected. I pointed out to the mayor that people will not shop in Springvale and he said “so be it”. The people of this area are the ones who voted him in. I’d say his attitude leaves a lot to be desired. Kath Cushen, Springvale.

Road-rage reversal

Victims’ rights on the table

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A ROAD-rage driver in her fifties deliberately slammed on her brakes and reversed into a following vehicle in Dandenong, a court has heard. Police told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that Suzanne Williams, 52, had tailgated the victim’s car and tooted on the horn as the victim approached the Wilson and Langhorne streets intersection at 5.20pm on 5 February. Williams then overtook the victim turning right into Langhorne Street, police prosecutor Senior Constable Kimberley Hawkins told the court on 2 November. As the victim drove behind Williams,

the accused deliberately slammed on the brakes causing the victim to narrowly avoid a collision. Williams then reversed her vehicle, ramming the victim’s car and jolting the occupants. She fled the scene. A “shaking” victim reported the incident to nearby Dandenong Police Station. After being tracked down by police, Williams later made full admissions to dangerous driving and failing to stop at the collision scene. She said she rammed the other vehicle because the victim was “smart towards her”, the court was told. Williams’s lawyer, armed with character references, said the accused’s behaviour was out of character.

“Without blaming her actions on the victims and complainants, there was conduct and driving by them preceding this,” the lawyer said. “It wasn’t completely out of the blue.” Since the incident, Williams had been medicated for long-diagnosed bipolar and major depression. A treating psychiatrist’s report stated Williams’s illness impaired her judgement and caused her offending behaviour, the lawyer said. The psychiatrist noted Williams’s remorse and concluded the offending was unlikely to happen again, the court was told. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the incident was serious and a “poor

example of driving”. “You felt inflamed and aggressive towards something the occupants did. “That’s something you’d normally see with a young male.” There were strong mitigating matters such as Williams’s co-operation with police, her early plea of guilty, no criminal history, favourable references and her age, he said. Her moral culpability was reduced by her mental health issues. Williams was convicted, fined $1500, put on a 12-month good behaviour bond and her drivers’ licence cancelled for 12 months. She was ordered to attend a road trauma awareness seminar.

Champions think on their feet

A FORUM that will inform victims of crime about their rights and available support services will be held in Dandenong. The event on 10 November, which is open to the public, includes the premiere screening of a short film telling the stories of five families who lost loved ones to crime. Service providers such as the Department of Justice and Regulation, Victoria Police and the Magistrates’ Court will make presentations. Department of Justice and Regulation Victims Support Agency director Clare Morton said becoming a victim of crime was often confronting. “Most people have little experience of the criminal justice and court systems, and navigating them when also dealing with the impact of a crime can be very daunting. “This forum will help improve understanding of how the justice system works.“ The forum is at Punthill Dandenong, 157-163 Lonsdale Street, 9am to 2pm. KEYSBOROUGH students have triumphed in a David and Goliath debating battle. Lighthouse Christian College has won the state Christian Schools Sports Network (CSSN) senior debating championships against larger and more experienced schools. Principal Avril Howard said the students involved gained so much from experiencing and competing in a discipline that involved thinking on their feet and framing a whole perspective on a given topic -instead of the quick 80-character digital reply world they live in. Year 9 student Sherridyn Forrest said preparing for a debate was always nerve-racking

and took a lot of thought. “But at the end of the day, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had,” she said. “My team members, English teacher and I all grew as a whole and not only did we accomplish winning the championships, but also accomplished great teamwork, unity and respect towards other schools.” Sherridyn said that debating had broadened her knowledge and developed her speaking skills. “Whether we had won or not, we would have walked out ready and excited to be involved in debating next year,” she said.

Teacher Rebecca Felici with debating students Andrew Lawton, Iris Pirvu, Hanna Psomoulis, Sherridyn Forrest, Daniel Andrew and Travis Zimmerman.

Units an easy answer THIRTY new units will ease demand for housing in Springvale, according to two Greater Dandenong councillors. Councillor Loi Truong supported the 29 three-storey and one double storey units at 39 to 45 Sandown Road, Springvale, at the 26 October council meeting. “In Springvale, the accommodation need is very high, he said. But Cr Matthew Kirwan with Cr Peter Brown voted against the proposal, with concerns about allowing a one-space visitor parking shortfall. “With the visitor parking require-

ments controlled by the State Government inadequate as they are, I can’t support this allowed reduction, even if it is just one, he said. “For a 30 dwelling development 10 of them three bedroom - five visitor car spaces are not enough. “While it may be near a train station, visitors are not likely to come just along a train line or up and down Springvale Road for that matter. “They can come from anywhere and usually by car in a suburban location - Greater Dandenong is not the inner city.

Cr Kirwan said on-street car parking would not help. “This is an area where density is expected to increase and put pressure on on-street car parking, he said. “It is also near a train station and a busy activity centre. Cr Kirwan also objected to providing first floor balconies to meet secluded open space requirements. “These are not apartments - they are townhouses - and thus providing ground level secluded open space is reasonable to be expected, he said. Cr Youhorn Chea said residents

would likely work in the city and wouldn’t need a car because of easy public transport access. He said the application complied with regulations. “I haven’t seen anything wrong,“ he said. “We need high-density housing in Springvale.“ Cr Chea voted in favour of the application alongside Crs Truong, Heang Tak, Jim Memeti, Maria Sampey and John Kelly. - CASEY NEILL

Research student is up for international award By CASEY NEILL HEBA Zahid is not your average student. The Springvale South resident moved to Australia from Saudi Arabia in 2008 to complete a Masters of Clinical Embryology. “I came pregnant with my first child, she said. “Then I did masters research for one year to qualify for a PhD. Ms Zahid is now a year from completing her PhD in breast cancer research at Monash University, has three children and is a finalist for a Victorian International Education Award. On 1 December she’ll find out if she’s the International Student of the Year in the Research category. “It’s an honour. I was very excited. I was very, very happy, she said. The nomination recognised her advocacy for support services for international students at Monash University - and puts her in the running for a $10,000 scholarship to

contribute to her studies in Victoria. She’s the Saudi Student Association south Melbourne female sector president, and recently volunteered to be a first-aid officer at Monash University within Hudson Institute for Medical Research. “You learn more when you engage with other people, she said. “If you want to improve your language you need to communicate with other people who speak the language. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert said all student award recipients would become ambassadors of the State Government’s Study Melbourne initiative and help promote the state as a leading international education destination. “International education is a vital part of Victoria’s economy and these awards will help showcase the fantastic results that can be achieved from studying at a Victorian university or vocational education provider, Mr Herbert said.

Arrests, drugs seized in raids POLICE have seized more than $17,000 in drugs in two Greater Dandenong raids. Three people will answer charges over the Greater Dandenong Tasking Unit drug warrant executions. On 26 October in Noble Park, officers arrested a 56-year-old Noble Park woman for allegedly possessing proceeds of crime and 15 grams of methylamphetamine, known as ice, valued at about $10,000. She was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 December. Police during the search also arrested a 20-year-old man for trafficking 400 grams of cannabis, valued at $5600, and possessing proceeds of crime. On 28 October they executed a further drug search warrant in Dandenong and arrested a 20-year-old Dandenong woman for possessing four grams - a traffickable quantity - of ice, valued at about $2000. She was charged bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 4 December.

A STOLEN car has been torched in a Springvale car park. The blue, mid-1990s Holden Commodore sedan was beside the railway line, in Newcomen Road near Erickson Street. A passer-by found it alight about 1.34am on Monday 2 November and called the CFA. Firefighters extinguished the fire, but the car was totally burnt out. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said police had forensically examined the car but so far had been unable to identify its owner.

Chris, Roeun and Robert Testimonial The approach at LJ Hooker Glen Waverley is completely different and extremely refreshing. LJ Hooker has handled my properties for a long time and they are by far the best property managers I have ever worked with. They understand the market as well as the needs of both owner and tenant. They found several tenants for my properties and on all occasions I have been extremely happy with the tenants and also the level of service. When there have been maintenance issues, the property manager has found quality, professional tradesmen and no job has required re-work. On one occasion when the tenant caused the maintenance issue, they worked with them to resolve the problem. Having lived interstate for the past 12 months I could completely relax about my properties, knowing LJ Hooker Glen Waverley would look after them. IF they gave out points for enthusiasm and dedication then Zed Nasheet of LJ Hooker, Hampton Park, would be an 11 out of 10. The 25-year-old real estate agent is quickly building a niche for himself in his chosen profession with an innovative approach to marketing which is drawing attention and not just around Melbourne. Describing himself as a “24-hour agent” never off the clock who’s passion and whose hobby is real estate, Zed has been an agent for almost seven years. In recent times his innovative marketing style has been featured on the Channel 7 news and Channel 9s “A Current Affairs”. He has found his point of difference in the market - video. “Yes, property video had ‘been done’ before, but not like this,” he said of his funny but inclusive mini-films aimed at showing not just the homes inclusively but their locations and potential lifestyles. “Stepping in front of the camera pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and I quickly learnt that it was very natural for me,” Zed said.

“In no time my videos took me to become a household name within my community and most recently across the country. “Real estate is my career, my hobby and my life. The competitive nature of this industry and the adrenalin when negotiating lifechanging deals is what I thrive on. I am always looking ahead at the next step in my life, and combining my passion for real estate and love for being in front of the camera is the next chapter.” He said while the videos are a lot of fun, they are also great tool for selling properties interstate and overseas because they “showed” the real house better than a static photo ever could. Walkers in giant feat WALKERS have put their best foot forward and pounded the pavement across Greater Dandenong. The sixth annual WalkFest on Friday 30 October featured four walk routes of different lengths.

All converged on Hemmings Park in Dandenong. Young people from The Bridge, Dandenong High School, Noble Park Secondary College and Emerson School helped plan the event, which was conceived to get people of all abilities active.

Making the cut for film FILMMAKERS of all ages can now make their mark on Greater Dandenong. Entries are now open for the City of Greater Dandenong’s newest art event - the Short Cuts Film Festival. It will provide a platform for local community members, emerging artists and accomplished industry professionals to showcase their talent and share their stories. Successful films will be screened in April next year, and the council is accepting entries in three categories. Emerging covers current or recent film graduates with less than five years’ experience, while professional filmmakers can enter the open section. The community/student category is for primary and secondary students and people with no professional filmmaking training. The deadline for submissions is 5pm on 15 January. Visit www.greaterdandenong.com for a submission form. The Short Cuts Film Festival is also looking for a curator. Visit the council website for a position description email expressions of interest to arts@ cgd.vic.gov.au.

Boxing for their lives By CASEY NEILL TEACHING the downtrodden how to box seems a strange choice - until Adam Kaoullas explains the value to the individuals and society. He’s lending a hand at The Big Issue Community Street Soccer program in Dandenong in the name of self-defence, fitness and boosting self-esteem. “The feeling you get from exercise is amazing,” he said. “It makes people feel so good. It makes you healthier. “It’s a big identity and belonging thing. It gives them a place to go.” Mr Kaoullas said boxing provided an outlet that could steer people away from less constructive activities, like taking recreational drugs. He has been boxing since a young age and turned to volunteering, first with youth workers at Moorabbin Boxing Gym, after an exchange trip to the US. “I felt like I needed to give something back to the community,” he said. “I started working at a clinic for individuals with disabilities. “The feeling that I got when they were improving, saying thank you at the end, it was like no other.

“The amount of joy I get from helping out and from their appreciation is amazing. “These people have been through so much but still have such a great attitude to training.” Stuart McGown brought the Community Street Soccer program to Dandenong in June 2008. “We have 25 to 35 people each week and we target those who are marginalised and disadvantaged in the community and use sport as a catalyst to promote positive change,” he said. “To get Adam to come out here and give up his own time and see the smiles on people’s faces was a real credit to him. “We’re really pleased to have him on board.” Mr McGown said soccer players had represented Australia at the Homeless World Cup in Milan, Paris and Poland. The program welcomes people aged 16 and above from different walks of life, from refugee backgrounds to mental health service referrals and the homeless. Mr McGown said participants experienced improved fitness and social connectedness. “It’s about having a safe place every week to come along and have some fun,” he said.

Adam Kaoullas leads a boxing drill. 144913 “Every week we seem to sign up new players.” There are clinics in different sports and guest speakers talk about health issues. “We also invite different organisations and agencies to have tournaments with us,” Mr McGown said. “We’ve had the fire service, family justice,

Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Ermha ... “They get to meet people they wouldn’t normally meet and it breaks down the barriers. “As soon as they cross that white line it doesn’t matter who they are.” The Big Issue Community Street Soccer program runs at JC Mills Reserve from 4pm to 6pm every Wednesday.

Bacon is back BACON lovers rejoice - it’s OK to eat processed meats, at least in moderation, says Dandenong Hospital bowel cancer specialist Bruce Waxman. But eat more fruit, salad, vegies and other fibrous foods to help avoid bowel cancer - now Australia’s second-most common cancer, Associate Professor Waxman says. He says there is evidence that backs a UN health report attributing a high cancer risk to eating large volumes of red and processed meats. “But like everything, taken in moderation it shouldn’t be a significant risk.” Another high-risk factor is a family history of bowel cancer, particularly of parents and siblings. Another tip is to take part in bowel-screening tests if you’re aged 55-andover, and act quickly if blood is found in your stool samples. The hospital’s head of colorectal surgery is one of a host of Monash Health specialists taking part in a free health seminar. The seminar is held by Aus Audio Visual Arts Association at Springvale Town Hall on 14 November, from 1pm to 5pm. For details call Vajira Ekanayake on 0401 178 436.

Dandy Diwali ALL things Indian will descend on Dandenong Market during Diwali celebrations. Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau (SCAAB) is partnering with the market to present free entertainment from 11.30am to 3pm on Sunday 15 November. Visitors can enjoy a traditional sword dancing performance, a Rangoli artist, festive face painting for kids, turban tying and henna hand art.

Bollydazzlers will dress in dazzling Bollywood costumes and perform to Indian music. Bhavesh Mahant from Curry and Chaat Corner will join Chef Russell Bald in The Kitchen to share insights into festive cooking. All Diwali activities and performances are free and will take place in Market Square. Sundays at the Market include free parking. Diwali, also known as Deep-

avali, means ‘a row or series of lights’ and is a time for reflecting, cleansing and celebrating the victory of light over darkness. A Hindu legend traces Diwali to Lord Rama, a descendant of the Hindu God Vishnu, who returned to his kingdom following 14 years in exile and won a battle against a demon king. The story told of how people lit up their houses to celebrate his victory.

Fresh fish siblings are the catch of the day By CASEY NEILL A BROTHER and sister duo hopes a Victorian retail first will net new customers at Dandenong Market. Third generation fishmongers Dimitri and Adriana Ganotis have opened Hellenic Seafood, specialising in fresh, whole Australian fish. They’ll have everything from fourkilogram snappers and salmon down to sardines and silver whiting. And they’ll be on show in large granite ice wells - the first retail outlet in Victoria to do so. “They’re like the ones that are in the Sydney fish market,” Adriana said.

“Everything’s nice and open and everything’s on ice. “Visually it’s a lot more appealing. “It’s a little bit more interactive with the customers. “We wanted a point of difference and something that looked a bit more traditional.” Adriana said fresh fillets cut in-store, King Island crayfish, Queensland prawns and oysters shucked in-store would also be on offer. “Nothing’s frozen. Everything comes fresh to us,” she said. “A lot of it is sustainably sourced as well. We try to get the highest

quality we can. “It’s something we’ve got a bit of a reputation for.” That reputation comes from family business O’Psaras on Portman in Oakleigh. “We worked together at the Oakleigh store as well, but it will be the first time we’ve worked together full time,” Adriana said of starting the stall with Dimitri. “We argue a lot. We’ll see how that goes! “He just finished up high school and I just finished up my uni degree. “Mum and dad will be around on the weekends, as well.

“There is a saying that we Greeks have salty blood due to our love of the sea and the bounty it offers, and I can certainly say that’s true for myself and my family.” The Greek seaside-village themed stall features decking floors to make visitors feel like they’ve stepped onto a pier and oyster shell tiles and sparkling glass to represent the Mediterranean Sea. Adriana said she was excited to welcome Dandenong Market. “It’s got some atmosphere and culture to it that we really love,” she said. The stall joins Schwarze Seafood and Marmara Seafood in the meat, fish and deli hall.

Industrial infill site AUSTLANDER Developments has paid $5.69 million for an infill site in Keysborough with plans for an industrial estate in its sights. The 5.66 hectare allotment at 241 Perry Road is zoned Industrial 1 and adjoins the Key Industrial Park. Savills Australia brokered the deal and senior executive Paul Jones said Austlander would seek to subdivide the land into 29 lots of 1000 square metres and two of 7000 square metres.

Trade ties could benefit business, says young achiever KEYSBOROUGH’S Kalyan Ky says free trade between Cambodia and Australia would boost Greater Dandenong business. The Greater Dandenong 2011 Young Achiever of the Year is the Cambodia Australia Chamber of Commerce, Innovation and Industry president (CACCII). The Cambodian Prime Minister’s son Hun Manet was in Australia with a delegation from 16 to 19 October. Ms Ky organised for them to meet International Adviser to the Office of the Prime Minister Lynette Wood, and Richard Colbeck, the Tourism and International Education Minister

and the Minister assisting the Minister for Trade and Investment. She said both parties committed to continued discussions to strengthen ties, and spoke about a free trade agreement, the prospect of a working holiday visa and increased scholarship numbers. Ms Ky said Cambodia could benefit from Australia’s technological expertise and that Greater Dandenong housed manufacturing businesses that produced industrial equipment, agribusiness equipment, food production and packaging technology. “All of which can be used to ex-

port Cambodian produce - in particular, live seafood - to Australia,” she said. Ms Ky said Australian companies could play a major role in Cambodia’s development. She said that with investment would come technological advances, skills and expertise, and strong corporate governance. “They can help build individuals, create jobs - which in turn alleviates poverty - and serve commercial interests,” she said. “These are the benefits of free trade.”

Arrested following alleged assault POLICE have arrested a man over an alleged assault on a Dandenong woman in Melbourne. The woman, 21, was walking along Swanston Street when she was punched in the head, about 1.10pm on Thursday 29 October. Police arrested a 39 year-old Frankston man a short time later. He was interviewed and released pending summons for intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault. Police have determined that the incidents were not prejudice-motivated. The Dandenong woman was “surprised” by suggestions from the Islamophobia Register Australia that the man assaulted her because she was Muslim. A 16-year-old Muslim boy, Muhammed, told the register that he had intervened in the attack and that the attacker had tried to remove the victim's hijab. “The offender did not appear to pull out a knife during the attack but he allegedly later pulled out a knife, when Muhammed tried to chase him away,” the register said. Police said the victim had not reported her attacker trying to remove her hijab or producing a weapon.

Pictures light up their lives DANDENONG and Keysborough students have helped to brighten the lives of sick kids. Students from Dandenong West Primary and Haileybury’s Newlands campus joined 100 kids from 12 schools at the soon-to-open Monash Children’s Hospital in Clayton on Monday 26 and Wednesday 28 October. With help from about 30 volunteers from PPG Architectural Coatings, they painted murals on the hoardings surrounding the construction site. Dandenong West’s design included a genie-inspired cloud of hearts while flowers were the order of the day from Haileybury. They’ll be displayed in the new hospital once it opens as a colourful symbol of support from the community, creating a bright environment for patients and their families.

Backroom girls and boys By JARROD POTTER WHILE speccies and goals bring the crowds, it’s the hard work away from the field that ensures local football keeps on going. Chris Swinburne personifies that hard work off the ground to help keep Dandenong based St John’s Old Collegians Football Club ticking along. She has toiled for the club across the last seven years and never asked for so much as a pat on the back, let alone winning the AFL’s 2015 Victorian Volunteer of the Year. But her tireless work behind the scenes - working as club secretary, treasurer and a general committee member among countless other non-official roles since 2008 - were not overlooked. Swinburne could hardly believe she won the award after a few boys at the club made sure her name was one of the nominees. She was whisked away to the city for a three-day experience across the AFL Grand Final weekend last month - culminating in receiving her award on that illustrious Saturday before watching Hawthorn claim its third premiership in a row. “The whole three days were brilliant,” Swinburne said. “It’s really hard to put it into words - it’s fantastic and such an honour - it really is and I just don’t

know how to describe. “It certainly makes me feel appreciated which is always nice.” She loves watching the JOCs run out in the Victorian Amateur Football Association, especially her son Glenn Costas, and seeing his recent success winning a flag and representing the association has been her fondest football highlights. “They’ve done pretty well, but on the other hand we’ve had quite a few lows there as well,” Swinburne said. “For me personally it was winning the 2011 premiership and in 2013 my son Glenn went over to Ireland to play Gaelic football and went over there with the VAFA, so I went over with my husband to watch him play that.” It’s all about helping St John’s get on the park each week for Swinburne and she hoped more people would get into the canteens, join committees and generally become a greater part of their own clubs to help the local game flourish. “I definitely always wanted to be involved - footy clubs need volunteers and we need a lot more,” Swinburne said. “I did it just to help the club out in generally, that’s what it is about - just helping the club and helping those boys get out there on the ground. “That’s what you do it for ... to help the boys.”

Win points to promising future for Caleb IT does not sound like much, but for Caleb Boland picking up his first ATP point meant the world to him. The literal world as Boland, 17, from Lysterfield, is now on the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) world rankings list with his high-ranking match victory earlier this year. By knocking off Brandon Walkin earlier this year at the Australia F3 tournament in Mildura - 2-6, 6-1 and 7-6 in a back-and-forth final set tiebreaker - Boland picked up the elusive first ATP point and earned his place among the world’s best. The first round victory gave Boland the right to call himself an ATP

ranked player - currently 1756 in the world - a difficult achievement for most junior male tennis players to accomplish. “It feels really good - not many people my age have an ATP ranking, so I was ecstatic to get that ATP point,” Boland said. “Got a wild card into the main draw and I played a really high ranked player (Walkin) and I beat him and that got me into the second round, but I lost to a very good player (Thomas Fancutt). “It was a really big tournament - the ITF Futures event in Mildura about five or six months ago when I just turned 17 - and to get it in Australia as well I was really proud of myself.”

While 1756 might be on the foothills of the ATP rankings charts and a long way to go to even take a couple of hundred spots off, Boland was thrilled to make his mark and take that first step in the senior ranks. His summer season ambitions are ambitious, but Boland thinks his drive and motivation will serve him well as he hopes a top 1000 ranking looms in his immediate future. “I’m really aiming towards top 1000 ATP - to get that ranking I’ll have to win a lot of main draw matches while travelling, so it’s going to be pretty difficult but that’s my aim,” Boland said. “Would have to get through a lot of qualifying and stuff ... I’d have to win 10 more (ATP

ranked) matches to get to top 1000.” To fuel his tennis ambitions, Boland has made the tough decision to start home schooling so he can focus more on his tennis. He believes, especially with a crucial few years ahead, it gives him the best shot at smashing his way towards a professional tennis career. He’s already bounced about a fair bit already with his calendar featuring Alice Springs, Cairns, Brisbane, Toowoomba and Wollongong this spring. His next challenge - the 18 and under nationals - would open another door for the powerhouse junior: a ticket into the Australian Open qualifying draw.

Stingrays’ new academy spoilt for choices By JARROD POTTER A TALENTED, tall and skilful Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls Academy is set to take on all challengers in 2015/16. Stingrays YGA coach Scott Gowans could not be prouder of the 50-strong contingent ready to hone their skills ahead of next year’s competition. The Stingrays will hit the ground running in their second season as an affiliated academy and it shows how far south-east girls football has reached in recent years as Gowans couldn’t find room for every talented player who attended the trials. “We’re very strong - it’s a really strong group and there are 17 new girls in the 34 (on the mainlist) which is really positive,” Gowans said. “There were five or six girls that won club best-and-fairests that didn’t even make the 50, so the talent is massive. “It’s a great position to be in - it’s hard to put a percentage on it but I reckon it’s gone up 3040 per cent on last year ... it surprised me to be honest.” Picking up where they left off after claiming a third consecutive South East Juniors Youth Girls premiership, Beaconsfield midfielders Georgia Gee, Tyla Hanks and Brooke Struulyart are part of the 34-player main list. Also featuring from the South East Juniors competition are Schoolgirls All Australians Courtney Jones and Emily Browning as well as Victorian representative Logan O’Connell-Webb and Parkmore duo Teagan Sheldon and Karina Diaz.

The tall timber is set to cause headaches in the Youth Girls landscape, especially with dualsportswoman Emily Rylance balancing life between football and basketball in this upcoming 12 months. Gowans thinks Rylance has what it takes to not only represent the state in the upcoming year or so, but to also don an AFL jumper when the time comes. “We’ve got five girls over 180cm and one of them is 188cm - Emily Rylance - so that will be very exciting,” Gowans said. “Potentially with her height and ability, she’s draftable in another 14-15 months. “She’s also got a basketball scholarship, so we’ll go easy on her training commitments and get her to academy games and even state level.” The try-outs were so popular and laden with skilful potential Stingrays, Gowans and his coaching group felt it was necessary to include a rookie list, headed by Victorian representative Georgia Gourlay, who is recovering from a longterm knee injury. “Because the talent was so big this year we’ve gone for 16 rookies instead of 10, which is great, so that game will be to try out the rookies and the young girls in the squad,” Gowans said. “We’ve taken some of the girls from last year like Samara Hazelden, Cassie Rowe - they’re 17 but the list is so strong, that we thought it wouldn’t be really fair to say no to them. “We’ll be able to work through that with them, develop them and get them back in for their top age year next year.”

CELEBRATING its golden anniversary, the Sandown Racecourse is set to shine on Saturday 14 November as the best in the business cap off the Spring Racing Carnival in style. Spring racing won’t be the only reason to get down to the Springvale-based horse-racing track - now named William Hill Park - as the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) will pop the champagne in honour of a memorable 50 years at the course. Sandown has been popular since its inaugural race meet on 19 June 1965, as 52,379 people welcomed the fourth Melbourne metropolitan racecourse to the greater racing community. The Journal reported at the time the 3.5 million pound course was “the culmination of some 17 years intensive planning, the result of which has meant a completely ’new deal’ for racing patrons with refinements such as totalisator windows in the concourse bars atop the grandstand, which have an un-

interrupted view of the track”. With 11 winter race meets relocated on account of extensive track-works over the time-frame of the actual anniversary, the course will instead celebrate its 50th birthday at the upcoming Spring Carnival Race Day. Topping the form guide are the mustwatch Group 2 races, the Zipping Classic and the Sandown Guineas, which will run alongside the Sandown Cup before the crowning of the Spring Champion Jockey and Trainer. Renamed to honour the champion stayer that picked up four crowns consecutively from 2007-10, the Zipping Classic 2400m was picked up by Au Revoir last year ahead of Epingle and this year’s Melbourne Cup winner Prince of Penzance. The Spring Carnival Race Day will feature nine races across the day and include family friendly activities with MRC mascot Clip Clop, from noon to 4pm at the Front Lawn.
