Kids ‘forced into caring’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN It’s A tough enough job for an adult, let alone a 16-year-old. But Geelong children as young as eight are being pressed into service as carers when disaster strikes families. Corio teen Bee Norman has known the pressures of taking on adult responsibilities and being forced to grow up fast since she was 13. Both her parents have mental health issues, plus her father works two jobs to make ends meet. Her mum suffers ongoing physical pain and can only work a couple of hours at a time but the real issue is her obsessive compulsive disorder. “I get very tired,” Bee answered succinctly when asked how it affected her. “Sometimes I have to take days off from school because I’m so tired. “Life has changed completely in just three years. So much can happen in a short time,” the teenager said. “I look at other teens doing whatever they want and I wonder how they can do that. I rarely get out.” Because of mum’s OCD, life runs to strict routine, planning and scheduling. Besides cooking dinner nightly, doing some tidying and washing, Bee spends all of Saturday cleaning house. The family tried getting home help, but only Bee knew how to manage the house to keep her mum’s OCD at bay. “I know how she wants it done, so it’s easier for me to just do it rather than go through all the hassle of trying to get someone else to understand,” Bee said. With only Sunday to herself, Bee

often finds herself catching up on school work. She receives some support by seeing a psychologist but the Young Carers program run by Barwon Health is her greatest source of help. “It helps a lot to speak to others in the same situation, some are as young as eight others are older,” Bee said. Bluebird Foundation’s Bron Lawson said Victoria had an estimated 104,000 young carers and that young people up to the age of 25 were providing unpaid care for a family member. “Caring responsibilities can have positives as young carers are often independent, capable people with strong family relationships. “However, they’re also at risk of social isolation, poor health and dropping out of school.” Bron said few young carers knew about the support available, such as the Young Carer program. The Bluebird Foundation was the catalyst behind a group of young carers working on an art project called Cubed to raise awareness among schools, youth organisations and health professionals. Under the guidance of local artist Jenna Ramondo, the carers have created a series of images telling their story for a street art installation and a package of posters and 3D cubes to be distributed to schools and youth services throughout the Barwon region. “Art can be such an effective tool to raise awareness about important issues,” Ms Lawson said. “One image can tell a story and move people in a powerful way.”

HER MOTHER’S KEEPER: Bee Norman was a full-time carer at 16.

In Brief Vale Shell Geelong former Labor MP Hayden Shell, who did not always toe the party line, has died aged 78. Mr Shell also served as a councillor at Geelong West and Geelong councils and president of Geelong RSL.

Rape charge A fourth man charged over an alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in St Albans Park has appeared in court. Rowan Wild, 27, of Corio has been charged along with three other family members, Kevin Wild, 28, Allan Wild, 29 and Brodie Wild, 20, who was extradited from Queensland.

Borboun stolen Geelong police have appealed for assistance in identifying a thief who struck at Dan Murphy’s Corio liquor store at 3.15pm on Monday, taking an unopened case of a dozen 700ml Jim Beam bottles worth $450. Police said the man, described as a tall, medium built, Caucasian male in his late 30s or mid 40s with brown curly hair under a black baseball cap, wearing black hooded jacket, jeans and runners, ran to a black Holden Cruze which had stolen registration plates ZIF-144.

BETTER THAN EVER: Mayor Darryn Lyons and the Indy’s Tony Galpin launch the Geelong Indy’s new look and additional features this week. (Reg Ryan)

New-look Indy ‘has more for readers, advertisers’ Geelong’s favourite newspaper has a new look and more to read. And it also has a new name with the introduction of the Geelong Indy masthead. The changes are part of a new direction for the paper, with refreshed design and more space for community involvement. Managing editor Tony Galpin said that this week marked the paper’s biggest shakeup since it was launched in 1986. The change from Independent to Indy reflected community sentiment, he said. “Everyone affectionately called us the Indy anyway, so it made sense to make the change,” Mr Galpin explained. “The name Indy complements our place in the community as a warmly regarded local paper with a strong, close relationship to our readers. “It’s also a contemporary rebranding, acknowledging the need for relevance and immediacy in the presentatation of local news, whether in print or digitally. Indy still means Independent, it’s just easier, more casual.”

Mr Galpin said other changes included more opportunities for community input. Readers could submit pictures to new Favourite Photos and Hot Shots sections, while additional editorial space allowed room for more stories on local people and issues. Mr Galpin said the Indy’s digital focus would also increase. “I encourage readers to like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for alerts to breaking news on our website, geelongindy.com.au. “And don’t forget the free subscription to our epaper for a link to be delivered to your email inbox every Friday.” Mr Galpin said some aspects of the Indy would remain the same despite all the changes. “We’re still Geelong’s family-owned, truly independent newspaper. We’ll always give all sides their say and keep doing the best we can for our readers and community.” Mr Galpin thanked the Indy’s loyal advertisers, who he said would benefit from the changes. “It’s all aimed at stenghtening our readership

and appeal, which can only be an advantage for the local business community. “We’re committed to providing the best product possible.” Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons was impressed when he inspected the changes at the Indy’s Moorabool Street office this week. The makeover mirrored Geelong’s transition to a “21st Century smart city”, Cr Lyons said. Community papers like Indy would continue to play an “incredibly important role”, he said. “Such papers offer us a stable, reliable and reputable medium to responsibly report on and record the daily local events that shape our lives. The Geelong Indy will continue this great tradition - especially as it wisely adapts its content, layout and approach to deliver news and information that its current and future readers truly want. “This is a great innovation and I congratulate all at the Geelong Indy for having the foresight and courage to move in this great new direction.”

Snake numbers ‘surging’ By ALANA MITCHELSON Geelong’s snake population is booming, according to local pest controllers. Pet deaths and calls for help were rising after an early beginning to snake season, they said. Snake-catcher Darren Keiller said he had never seen so many snakes in 15 years. “We’ve been called to snake jobs four to five times a week on average this year,” said Mr Keiller, of Snake Catcher Geelong. “The worst I’ve seen was about four weeks ago. I got six phone calls in two hours.” Mr Keiller said nine pets died from snake bites in Lara last summer but this year he was already aware of seven or eight deaths. Pest controllers said tiger snakes, lowland copperheads and eastern browns were the most active this season. Two of the species were in the world’s top 10 venemous snakes. Lara and Little River were hot spots for snakes so far this season, the catchers said, but they had also attended calls from Corio, Wallington, Norlane and Torquay. Greg McPherson, of Jim’s Pest Control North Geelong, said snakes were relocated about 5km from capture sites and released into the wild, often near a creek or river. “Don’t muck around with snakes,” he warned. “Move away from the snake, continue to keep an eye on it and call a licensed wildlife controller. “It’s important to remember that snakes are protected under the wildlife act. It’s actually illegal to kill or harm a snake.” Mr McPherson said most calls were during mornings or evenings. “Snakes try to keep cool because they don’t like really hot weather. You can often find them lying on a roof or near an open front or back door for the cool breeze. “They also like food and water, so they’re attracted to dog water bowls and chook pens.” Department of Environment, Land, Water

SNAKEY: A snake captured in Corio by Jims Pest Control. and Planning’s Mark Breguet said snake sighting numbers were difficult to determine because people often dealt directly with snake-removal businesses or councils. “Any reported increase in snake sightings and work for snake removal contractors this year might well be reflecting other significant factors, including rapid urban growth into snake habitat,” he said. “Development of more residential housing estates in rural or near bushland areas naturally leads to more snakes being visible and potentially

entering people’s backyards.” Ambulance Victoria Geelong’s Ben Francis said snakes were more active in summer and were often seen around urban fringes. “Many people who suspect they’ve been bitten were walking through long grass or working in the garden at the time.” Mr Francis advised residents to ensure victims stayed calm and still to slow the spread of any venom. A pressure immobilisation bandage also helped slow the venom, he said.

Crowded trains ‘require action’ Overcrowding on the Geelong rail line must be addressed urgently, Western Victoria Region MP Simon Ramsay told State Parliament this week. Mr Ramsay said increased patronage had led to significant overcrowding, particularly during peak hours. “Recent statistics indicated more than half of V/Line’s peak Geelong trains were fully packed in August. V/Line’s snapshot data for the month revealed seven of its 12 morning services on the Geelong line between 6am and 8am were at full capacity. “These figures only record up to 100 per cent capacity and also showed that evening services departing from Melbourne between 4pm and 6.30pm were absolutely chock-a-block. Even the two largest trains, with 455 seats were overcrowded. “Not surprisingly, the smallest train, the 7.14am from South Geelong, with just 222 seats, was also at full capacity. “I’m sure many travellers will tell you that at peak times trains are over-capacity, even with services running every 20 minutes. There’s no more track capacity, except to possibly use the direct Southern Cross through to Werribee line, which is something I think the minister might well need to consider.” Mr Ramsay told Parliament that Geelong commuters needed more carriages “right now” so additional commuters could ride peak-time services that were “obviously overstretched and at full capacity”. “I’ve made an urgent plea to the minister to look at options to increase capacity on the Geelong line so passengers can at least travel in some comfort and safety but also to have the opportunity to be able to use the service at all, given the full capacity at those peak times.”

Double Take Geelong Police’s Eyewatch Facebook page posted a new scam alert this week, although the scammers behind this one have managed to create their own alert. It’s another ATO scam that is trying to collect people’s hard-earned refunds. But calling it the Australian ‘Taxatation’ Office kind of gave the game away, you would think. Unless the victims of the scammers are just as bad at spelling.

Calendar girls a ‘classic’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN There is nothing like a dame - and the classic carowning girls featured in the Motor Dames 2016 Calendar agree. Cherry De Ville, EveElle Scarlett, Loretta Lowbrow and Rebecca DeWrecker among others all showed off their pride and joy in the Geelongproduced calendar while rocking ’40s or ’50sinspired glam outfits. The idea was at least partly in response to the usual bikini-clad girls reclining on sports cars, agreed one of the driving forces behind the calendar, photographer Kel Hoy. Ms Hoy and designer Mel McLean sounded out a few Geelong friends, all owners of classic and restored cars, and spent six months setting up the photos. The nicknames all came from doing pin-up competitions with a loose network of likeminded female classic-car owners established through Geelong and Melbourne car social clubs. “Female classic-car owners get a lot more respect these days, Ms Hoy said. “The guys say kudos to you. We’re all on an equal par. “We wanted to do the calendar to celebrate women who put in the hard work on their cars because they all appreciate their cars and take great care of them. The cars featured include a 1964 VW Beetle, 1965 XP Falcon, 1948 Hudson, 1967 white Chevy Camaro and a 1968 Mercury Cougar. Ms Hoy said she thought the calendar was first of its kind in Australia. “We plan do a few more for the next few years, she said. The publication had garnered “a lot of interest and enjoyed the support of local businesses. Launched last weekend at Geelong Motor Museum, the calendar can be ordered at facebook. com/RippleDigitalDesigns.

A media release from local member and environment minister Lisa Neville spouted info about the new boards appointed to our catchment management authority. There was even a helpful link to where one could find the said appointees. Clicking the link takes you to the new Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning website, or DELWP, an amalgamation of two former websites, DEPI and DTLPI. Double Take spent an agonising 15 minutes scrutinising all three websites, with nary an item about new CMA boards to be found. The Indy gave the Act on Climate Festival huge promotion last week, announcing the inaugural Geelong event with a lead story on page five. The report noted that CSIRO released survey results showing that only 45.9 per cent of Australians believed climate change was man-made. “FACT CHECK, tweeted festival organiser Dan Cowdell in response. “The survey showed 78 per cent of Australians believed in climate change. The real fact check is that 38.6 per cent thought the change was natural, not manmade. But don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Geelong store in pet policy scare By ALANA MITCHELSON

Claus out for return of floating tree Santa Claus made a flying visit to Geelong this week in time to welcome back the city’s floating Christmas tree for its second festive season on the waterfront. And he wasn’t the only one waiting, with national TV news crews also on hand to film images for reports on Tuesday night. The tree lights up again at 9.15pm tonight with a new light show, contemporary Christmas music and even smoke effects.

A spill of snail pellets at Bunnings North Geelong has raised new concerns over the company’s petfriendly policy, according to a shopper. The poisonous pellets could have been a dangerous temptation for dogs visiting the store with owners this week, said Lethbridge’s Liz Day. “The snail pellets spillage stretched over about three metres and it just really struck me,” she said. “I could tell it had been there for some time, it wasn’t a fresh spillage. You could tell someone had tried to sweep some of it up but there were still pellets all along the bottom shelf.” Ms Day said the pellets were “attractive to dogs”. “Years ago, someone I know’s dogs injested only a tablespoon of them. The dogs got through it but they were in a really bad way.” Ms Day raised her concerns after a dog allegedly bit a child at a Melton Bunnings earlier in the week. Ms Day, with life-long experience handling animals on her farm, wanted improved safety for pets, customers and children at Bunnings stores. “You can’t keep your eyes on your animals all the time. When you’re shopping and distracted, I think it would be easy not to notice a dog eating some snail pellets and therefore not treat it in time. “Then you might have a dead dog.” Ms Day said the manager was “horrified” when she contacted the North Geelong store with her concerns. He was amenable and open to her suggestions, she said. Ms Day also contacted Bunnings’ head office, which took her feedback on board, she said. “There should be obvious warning signs at the

entrances and staff should be trained about how to handle a potential fight breaking out between dogs. “I suggested they send a dog behaviourist out to stores to assess the sites for any foreseeable safety issues so that appropriate caution can be taken.” Mrs Day was satisfied the store would address her concerns with staff regularly monitoring the aisle with snail pellets but remained worried about other problems arising under the pets policy. “This is only one store and one incident. There are many other items in Bunnings that are dangerous to animals, like rat poison. “I have a rescue Jack Russell called Toby and I definitely wouldn’t take him into a Bunnings store.” A Bunnings spokesperson said pet dogs had been visiting the company’s stores “in a low-key way” for 20 years, some in the back of tradies’ utes and others in the arms of their owners. “Seven months ago, to make things clearer for our team, we changed the wording of an outdated policy that was at odds with this reality. We made a common sense decision to recognise in our policies that well-behaved pet dogs are permitted,” the spokesperson said. “Safety and store presentation are very important to us and we always welcome customer feedback. The team at Geelong North have received a lot of positive feedback this week and little challenges like ensuring any spills are cleaned up quickly are a continual area of focus for our teams. “We’ll continue listening to feedback from customers and take this into account and to evolve our policy so that it meets community expectations.”

Blitz on roads as death toll climbs

Crowd’s funding snapper

By ALANA MITCHELSON

By ALANA MITCHELSON

More police will patrol local roads this summer as part of a state-wide blitz, according to a traffic officer. The “enhanced police enforcement operations” would cover 13 December to 3 January, Geelong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Shane Coles said. The operation was in response to a “particularly bad” road toll this year, he said. “Four have been killed on Geelong roads and unfortunately 10 have died on the Surf Coast. I want to do away with the term ‘road toll’. These are real people with real families and there will be a loved one missing at the Christmas table.” Sen Sgt Coles said police would target major roads and highways, with booze buses out in force around New Year’s Eve. Police would “hit local towns with force” and target bad driving along the Great Ocean Road, he said. Marked and unmarked police motorbikes would patrol high risk areas for recreational accidents, such as the Otways. A spokesperson said the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) had provided police with funding to boost road patrols. “This money funds overtime hours, meaning police can increase their focus on improving driver behaviour without interfering with their normal policing operations,” the spokesperson said. “The TAC will run a campaign over the summer period to help the community understand that police are out there to protect them and keep them safe so they can celebrate the holiday period with their loved ones.” New TAC research reveals that on-road motorcycle crashes are more likely as the seasons warm. “With warmer weather already here, the findings highlight the need for greater caution by riders and drivers, as more motorcyclists take advantage of the favourable riding conditions,” the TAC research said. “Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable and are over-represented in injury statistics. We don’t want this summer or the coming holiday season to be marred by trauma.”

Overwhelming support for a crowdfunding campaign to replace stolen camera gear worth $10,000 has humbled a South Geelong photographer. Kristian Wild was shocked to find his house trashed and a backpack full of digital camera gear gone when he returned home on 29 October. The 22-year-old had been working a retail job for the past three years to save for the expensive equipment so he could further his photography career. The backpack also contained film cameras with “sentimental value“ because he had owned them since he was 13. The burglar broke in through a bedroom window, Mr Wild said. “They’d gone through everything, all my clothes were on the ground. I felt very violated. “They left bigger things, like the TV and my housemate’s guitars, and seemed to grab anything smaller they could just pick up and take with them.“ Mr Wild, who recently completed a shoot for musicians Angus and Julia Stone, said the similar situation of an American photographer inspired the crowdfunding campaign. The campaign had raised about $2300 since beginning two weeks ago, he said. Mr Wild was grateful to his supporters, who had helped him buy a basic camera body and lens so he could continue his work in the meantime. “It’s not what I had but it’s a start. “I’ve been quite surprised by how many of my friends on Facebook and Instagram have donated. People who I wouldn’t have thought would care actually do care. “Some are friends from years ago. It’s quite special. “Even though I’m sad about what happened, I know that my new gear I’ll eventually buy will be special because it will be a gift from all my friends.“ Mr Wild said his campaign was open at gofundme.com/he7t8zpg

SUPPORT: Kristian Wild had camera equipment stolen from his South Geelong home two weeks ago.

Mums the word for cot donations By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN An award-winning local mother’s organisation is on a campaign to ensure every baby has a safe cot to sleep in. The right to a safe to place to sleep is the motivation for Geelong Mums’ latest community initiative - Rise and Shine Baby! Geelong Mums general manager Kate Kent said having essentials such as a safe cot for their baby to sleep was often financially out of reach for Geelong families in need. “It means parents are often forced to use unsafe equipment or even go without,” Ms Kent said. “Rise and Shine Baby is about ensuring families receive the support they need to be able to nurture their child. “Every month Geelong Mums helps more than 120 local families with emergency relief baby equipment like cots prams, car seats, highchairs, clothing, linen, nappies and toys. “Of all of the items, cots are one of the most consistently requested.” Ms Kent said Geelong Mums was finding it difficult to meet the current demand for cots and mattresses for families. “Sourcing high quality pre-loved cots is tough as they must meet strict Australian standards and often pre-loved cots do not meet these standards due to being too old or in very poor condition.” Geelong Mums, through its ‘big sister’ St Kilda Mums, has secured a deal with a manufacturer to buy cots for $140, a fraction of the retail price. The community can support the campaign by making a financial donation, or donating a preloved cot if it meets current Australian standards. “The need in our community is great but our willingness to help is greater and together we can make a big difference in the lives of families with babies and small children in the Geelong region,” Ms Kent said. The Rise and Shine project aimed to raise funds and collect 150 new cots and inner spring mattresses.

SAFE SLEEP: Kate and Abby McGregor, Rebecca and Vincent Wheaton and Lauren and Margot McKirdy support the Geelong Mums Rise and Shine project. (Reg Ryan) Last week Geelong Mums, along with its sister organisations St Kilda Mums and Eureka Mums, won the 2015 Premier’s Sustainability Award.

The award recognised the recycle, reuse and recycle strategy promoted by the organisations. “We are thrilled to be recognised for the work we do but, more importantly, we need to be able

to keep growing to meet the needs of Victorian families. “The demand for our service only continues to grow.”

Housing waiting list has blowout

NOMINATIONS CALL: Inaugural category winners Casey Geffke (achievement) and Phoebe Mitchell (sports and recreation) with awards supporters Karen Pritchard, Cr Kylie Fisher, Carol Okai, Mike McKinstry and Andrew McLeish.

Award nominations called Simone Stevens was rapt to be a finalist in the inaugural Geelong Awards for People With a Disability last year. The East Geelong champion campaigner for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was nominated for the volunteering category last year. The awards were overdue recognition for disabled people, she said. “Famous people get recognised a lot more than those of us who have challenges in life. “People with disabilities get overlooked but I want to change this and these awards can assist with this. “Radio stations and local newspapers need to keep talking about disability issues (through promotion of) the awards and the Having a Say Conference as well as the NDIS.” Nominations for the 2016 awards opened this week with categories for volunteering, sport and

recreation, leadership and advocacy, achievement, arts, and outstanding employee. Community services agency Karinga has again partnered with City Hall to run the awards which will double as the opening of Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability’s Having a Say Conference. “Last year’s awards were an outstanding success and this year is set to be even bigger and better - it’s a terrific initiative,” said councillor Kylie Fisher. City Hall has partnered with community services agency Karinga again to run the awards which will double as the opening of Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability’s Having a Say Conference. Winners will be revealed on 9 February. Nominations are open at geelongaustralia.com.au/disabilityawards/default.aspx.

The waiting list of families seeking public housing in Geelong has blown out under the Andrews Labor Government, according to South Barwon MP Andrew Katos. Mr Katos said 50 more people were waiting for housing compared to March this year. He accused the State Government of “silently” posting online the quarterly figures because they “showed a disturbing trend”. The September quarter waiting list for Geelong was 1880, up 46 from the June quarter. The state-wide waiting list was 34,726. Mr Katos said he was concerned that the public housing waiting list would blow out again the same as when it reached around 41,000 under the previous Labor government. “History is repeating itself under the Andrews Labor Government,” Mr Katos said. “The public waiting list had been steadily decreasing under the coalition but it’s taken just six months for Labor to undo everything that had been achieved. “Despite Daniel Andrews’s promise to reduce the waiting list for public housing, it has now blown out with over 50 people added in the Barwon region in the last six months alone.” Mr Katos said the State Government budget forecast a net loss in public housing, forcing more people onto the waiting list. “With a budget now in deficit it is hard to see how Daniel Andrews will be able to afford to re-

verse this concerning trend,” Mr Katos said. “Daniel Andrews should explain to local families and children waiting for public housing why they will wait even longer now for a home.” But Minister for Housing Martin Foley said the most important measure of the list was how long people in need spent waiting for housing. He said average wait times for those most in need blew out 54 per cent under the former coalition government. “The Liberals neglected public housing for four years as $470 million was ripped out of the Victorian system, which has inevitably had an impact on the waiting list,” Mr Foley said. “Liberals don’t care about our most disadvantaged, it’s why they cut funding to housing. “In their last year of government, the Liberals not only failed to build more public and social housing, they robbed 327 Victorian households of the chance for a home by getting rid of 327 homes. “It will take some time to fix the damage inflicted by the former Liberal Government but we are committed to working with the sector to do this. “That’s why the Andrews Labor Government has invested $180 million in new housing development, increased the Housing Assistance budget by 5.5 per cent and invested $40 million in Homelessness Innovation Action Projects – all in our first budget.”

Scientists settled on city as host The science is settled: Geelong is an ideal conference venue. Well, maybe that should be the scientists are settled, with more than 340 of them visiting Geelong last week for the 13th Asian Textile Conference. The talkfest provided a financial windfall for Geelong as the delegates, some of whom brought family members with them, spent four days in the city. “We chose Geelong because of its strong connections with textiles and fibres, its culture, reputation for excellent food and wine and beautiful setting on Coiro Bay. It was clearly the right choice,” said Kerryn Caulfield, of the Technical Textiles and Nonwoven Association. “Our delegates, some bringing wives and families, came from China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan the Middle East, Europe, Britain and the Americas. There were many positive comments on the beauty of the seaside location, the warmth of Geelong hospitality, the excellent food and the four-day program filled with opportunities to share knowledge and their work with colleagues from across the globe.” The association hosted the conference in conjunction with Deakin University. Professor Xungai Wang, director of Deakin’s Institute for Frontier Materials, said hosting the conference was a “privilege” for the university and Geelong. “Textiles and fibres play a vital role in society today in our clothing, sport, the cars we drive, our farming, mining, coastal parks, medicine and much more. This is why this conference is so important,” Prof Wang said. “As one of the world’s leading conferences on textiles and fibres, it sets the direction for the advancement of textiles and fibres for the future benefit of society.” The response of the visiting scientists to the event will back Geelong’s case for government funding to build a convention centre, which City Hall and other bodies have placed at the

The Indy reported last week that businessman John Haddad had proposed building a convention centre with a casino on a new Yarra Street pier extending from Geelong’s waterfront. The proposal would require State Government

changing laws to allow a second casino in Victoria. Opponents to the proposal, including the Greens and Liberal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson, have urged the government to reject the proposal.

Mayor Darryn Lyons has enthusiastically supported the conference centre proposal and development of a new Yarra Street pier but was last week still waiting for more information on the casino plan.

‘A sigh of relief’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A reprieve on legal costs from a failed bid to stop a service station has saved Drysdale and Clifton Springs Community Association (DCSCA). Victorian Civil and Administration Tribunal (VCAT) had ordered DCSCA to pay Caltex franchisee Milemaker Petroleum $5500 by 7 December after the group lost an appeal against the proposed service station development on Jetty Road. The association started a fund-raising campaign to try covering the costs after appeals to Milemaker initially fell on deaf ears. But DCSCA president Rich Paradise said Milemaker had now decided to waive its demand for legal costs.

Mr Paradise said Milemaker general manager Ari Singer told him the company had decided to waive the costs “as a gesture of goodwill to the local community”. “The association congratulates Milemaker for making this generous gesture to the local community,” Mr Paradise said. “It takes the financial pressure off the association, for which we’re grateful, and it shows that the company wants a good relationship with the community, which is good news for everyone.” Association treasurer Doug Carson said donors had responded generously to the appeal. “With the legal costs waived, we intend, as promised, to return each contribution with our thanks and a sigh of relief,” Mr Carson said.

Rescued, but with a catch RIGHTS ON: Elaine Robb speaks out to mark Encompass’s 30th anniversary.

Chief takes on ‘prejudice’ Prejudice against people with disabilities still exists despite “many strides forward” in advocating for their rights, according to the chief of a leading Geelong welfare agency. Elaine Robb marked Encompass Community Services’ 30th anniversary with a speech highlighting the difficulties confronting the disabled, whether seeking employment or simply shopping. “There have been so many strides forward in the rights of people with disabilities but each time someone is denied a job opportunity, visible or invisible prejudices still exist,” Ms Robb said. “Each time a person is ridiculed or told they can’t do something, like buying something from a hi-fi store, ignorance still exists.

“Every time someone feels they have to hide that they live with a mental illness, fear of difference is an issue.” Ms Robb said Encompass was working to “break down the barriers”. The organisation was striving to create “universal opportunities … not because it is easy but because it is the way the world must be,” she said. “That’s what Encompass is going to do; create the new and better reality.” Encompass is a not-for-profit organisation providing services for the disabled, the unemployed and others dealing with financial, social or learning problems, More information is available at encompasscs.org.au.

The owner of a dog rescued with people power earlier this week on the New South Wales south coast is a former Geelong man on the run from Victoria Police. The story made headlines around the country when Charlie Griffith’s American bulldog, Brooklyn, became stuck in a wombat hole. Locals in Nowra banded together to dig the pooch out but the national media coverage aroused the interest of police in Victoria, where Mr Griffith was wanted. Police issued a media release in July last year with a photo of Mr Griffith. “The 38-year-old Geelong man is wanted in relation to stalking and a number of assault related offences,” the notice said. “Investigators have made a number of enquiries at to Charles’ whereabouts and believe that he may frequent the Horsham and Warrnambool areas.” NSW and Victorian police were liaising on Mr Griffith’s potential extradition but refused to comment further.

Letters Birds hit the walls I’m all for E Pollock’s wetland for birds (Letters, 6 November) but he needn’t worry about climate change and rising sea levels. At the current rise of about 2mm a year we’ll have 1000 years to raise the sea walls. Tim Saclier Leopold

Cheap but tainted Barwon Water managing director Joe Adamski was correct to state that a “compelling reason” to drink tap water was its cost, which is 1700 times cheaper than bottled water (Indy, 6 November). But he failed to state that tap water is polluted with toxic waste namely, hydrofluorosilicic acid, or fluoride, from the fertiliser industry. Fluoride has never been approved for human consumption, with plenty of evidence that it harms individuals. Maybe this is why Barwon Water has never undertaken a health impact study on consumption of fluoride, which would show why all European countries, China and Japan have banned fluoridation. Mr Adamski misjudged the community reaction to forcing fluoride on us, which is why some people are prepared to buy bottled water. He also failed to explain the economic sense of administering a toxic waste into the water supply. KW Oakley Belmont

Bells and no tinsel I thought the Christmas decorations being put up in our city would be new this year but by the look of things they are the same, just bells on poles. Surely the city of Geelong needs tinsel. If we had tinsel as well as bells on poles the city would be better this Christmas. Myer’s windows are on again but we still need to make Geelong better than what we have at the present. Tinsel in our streets would achieve this. I hope City of Greater Geelong can consider this in time for Christmas. B Porter Corio

Hold Australia to account I applaud MP Andrew Wilkie’s demand that Australian governments be held to account for the invasion of Iraq. He also called for an Australian inquiry like the UK’s Chilcot Inquiry, stating that “all governments from John Howard to Malcolm Turnbull’s be held responsible for Australia’s involvement in the region”, and condemned Australia’s bombing in Syria as “reckless”. The death of hundreds of thousands cannot be erased with the words ‘I’m sorry’, as Tony Blair recently stated. A Dennis Herne Hill

CSIRO: Green, climate-change is man-made; grey, natural fluctuation; red, not happening; blue, no idea.

Minority reported While it was most refreshing to see the Indy’s coverage of the upcoming Geelong Act on Climate Festival in last week’s paper, the wording about the prevalence of climate sceptics was disappointing to say the least. The fact is that the CSIRO survey of 17,493 people over five years showed 78 per cent of Australians believed in climate change. Climate change is a real threat to the Geelong community and its impacts are already being felt with record-breaking temperature, increased heatwaves and climate variability. The Act on Climate Festival is an important community event to raise awareness of the issue and most importantly showcase positive, practical solutions to the climate crisis that we can all adopt. Dan Cowdell Geelong Sustainability president I congratulate the Indy for its story headlined ‘Festival to raise heat on climate’ but the CSIRO pie chart showed what the event was on about. The chart’s green sector showed a correct portion of 45.9 per cent for believers in man-made climate change but did not show the correct portion of sceptics, 46.5 per cent. This category was shown only as 38.6 per cent for respondents who believed climate change was a natural fluctuation and 7.9 per cent who believed it was not happening, so the CSIRO was fudging its facts. And combing these figures with the stated proportion of people who had no idea whether climate change is happening, 7.7 per cent, does not add up to 100 per cent. The CSIRO’s climate department is clever with its valuations, including the deception that Australia’s temperature has increased a whopping three degrees centigrade. For example, the CSIRO’s figures for the Northern Territory left out zones with cooling temperatures, like Darwin, and showed only Alice Springs and Coopers Creek. Thomas T S Watson Bell Post Hill

High performance I have long thought that, given the prevalence of drugs in sport, some affirmative action regarding drug-taking by sportspeople is needed. When seeing American Lance Armstrong winning Tours De France after bouts of serious cancer, one had to wonder how such a thing could be. Years later the truth came out: Armstrong was a drug cheat, and what was even worse was that his foundation collected nearly $1 billion for, ostensibly, cancer research!

Coffee-imbibing athletes have faced severe consequences for their latte consumption and it might even be that a cough lolly is a prohibited substance now. The situation has become so ridiculous that the agenda behind this might just be the making of a quid out of highly-paid sportspeople via fines. The solution I came up with, silly as it seems, is a Stoned Olympics. Athletes would get to take whatever perfor-

mance-enhancing drugs they liked. Everyone would run around the track and the punters in the bleachers could place bets on who blows up, collapses or spontaneously combusts first. If my plan goes ahead, Kardinia Park could be renamed the Kardinia Koliseum. Who knows, even mixed martial artists could be enlisted to kick, stomp and arm-bar each other into submission too. The public would love it. Kardinia Koliseum might even be able to pay its own way for stadium upgrades just through the television broadcast rights. Great family entertainment, for sure! How to Finnish school Stress and anxiety among young students suggests it’s time to look at an alternative style of education. In my 15 years teaching secondary students I avoided exams like the plague. In some cases I was bound by law to give exams, so I would go over previous exam papers until the students were comfortable and confident they could pass. If I had my way all students would be assessed by the teacher in conjunction with themselves. Students know their levels and any good teacher knows where they fit in class. Putting a student in a situation of stress or anxiety, as in exams, never allows them to achieve their potential. Canada is adopting the Finnish system for stagebased rather than age-based learning. This means replacing grades nine to 12 with a project-based system. Students learn as they progress through the material rather than being held back or moved forward because of their age. The amount of time students spend in school shouldn’t depend on their age but instead on their ability to perform. An underlying reason for student disengagement is that high-performing students are forced to learn things that don’t challenge them. Those who learn slower grow similarly disengaged, so both are led down a path of underachievement. With stage-based learning comes a different approach to assessments, with qualitative portfolios that record accomplishments without a quantitative value replacing exams. Students put under stress will not learn or enjoy school, so maybe it’s time we looked at the Finnish system. Bob Thompson Ocean Grove

Past back to haunt us It’s probably futile trying to enlighten climate change deniers such as Tim Saclier (Letters, 30 October). His reminder that the carbon dioxide levels on Earth five million years ago were tenfold higher than now, before land plant or animal life existed, only served to remind us what we might return to. The fact is CO2 levels are now far higher than they have been throughout human history and all the increase can be attributed to human activity. Like so many who refute global warming, he finds sanctuary in extremists like the discredited Richard Lindzen rather than accept the views of mainstream scientists who recognise that global warming is a threat we must address with the greatest urgency. Murlocs tune up with local gig By ALANA MITCHELSON Local blues/rock outfit The Murlocs have big plans for 2016, with an overseas tour on the agenda and the release of a new album. It’s been a long time coming since The Murlocs released latest single Adolescence last summer, but lead singer Ambrose Kenny-Smith said a new album was to be released very soon. “We’ll be releasing a new album by the start of next year and I’m hoping we’ll finally take our tour overseas,” he said. “There’ll be a lot happening next year.” The majority of the quintet grew up on the Bellarine Peninsula. Kenny-Smith, guitarist Callum Shortal and drummer Matt Blach had known each other since their school days at Ocean Grove. Kenny-Smith fondly recalled The Murlocs’ first gig when the band was granted a slot at Ocean Grove’s Piping Hot Chicken Shop as part of Queenscliff Music Festival. “People are clueless to the fact that so many bands come out of the Geelong music scene,“ he mused. “I’ve moved to Melbourne now but it’s always really nice to come back to Geelong and play a show at the Barwon Club. “I usually spend a lot of the night catching up with people I haven’t seen for ages.” Kenny-Smith said the band was quite collaborative in its approach to making music. Shortal usually created the music and KennySmith wrote the lyrics, he explained. But in crafting their second full-length album, the songwriter found himself picking up the guitar and strumming melodies much more than usual. Now preparing for the tour, Kenny-Smith said things always seemed to go wrong when The Murlocs were on the road.

HEDGE FUND: The Murlocs play Geelong this weekend ahead of a new album early next year. “Just recently our bass player had an allergic reaction to antibiotics,” he said. “We all rushed him to the hospital during peak-hour traffic and had to race back to play a show as a four-piece. It gave us a bit of a scare but

he’s fine now. “We just seem to have a bit of bad luck on tour. Hopefully we’ve had all the bad luck we could possibly have for one year and luck will go our way next year.”

The Murlocs play at The Barwon Club Hotel tomorrow, with supports Hills Hoist, Zig Zag and Orb from 8pm.

North SKAART’s young heart Northern Geelong’s 10th annual SKAART Carnival this weekend will be the “biggest event ever”, according to its ward councillor. Patrons could expect activities including a mega shark slide, a silent disco, aerosol art and skate, scoot and BMX competitions at the “huge community celebration”, Cr Kylie Fisher said. “SKAART offers exciting and unique activities all designed to celebrate young people and bring the local community together for a free family day out,” she said. A committee of young people organises SKAART each year to unite Geelong’s northern suburbs communities. “SKAART has become a much-loved and anticipated event for the northern suburbs of Geelong and the young people are so proud to be able to organise this event for their community,” Cr Fisher said.

The Geelong Bonsai Club meets the second Monday of the month and new members are welcome. Mr Buttigieg said more information was available by phoning 5221 2896 or 0412 604 211. FINALLY FRIDAY Musical night to help festival By ALANA MITCHELSON Anglesea Music Festival volunteers are hosting a music night next month to raise funds to support their Australia Day weekend all-day event. Local favourite Chris Wilson will perform at Anglesea Hotel on 4 December, with a string of other musical acts battling it out to secure a place in the AMF line-up at 6.30pm. The festival itself will kick off on 23 January from 11am at Ellimatta Reserve in Anglesea, with headliners Mick Thomas of Weddings Parties Anything, Jimmi Hocking, Geoff Achison, Cleveland Blues as well as Bellarine’s Chris Wilson. His talented sons Fenn Wilson, 19, and George Wilson, 16, will also join him on the main stage. AMF director Karren Stoneham is a singer and has been a music teacher for 18 years. She used to host open mic nights, known as Anglesea Live, which eventually grew so popular that the concept developed into a festival. Next year’s event is expected to attract another huge crowd and Ms Stoneham said it could sell out. “Every year we receive more applications from musicians who want to audition to perform on the day,” she said. “It becomes tougher each year. There are so many fantastic performers.” Two main stages will feature the headlining acts, while three other stages will showcase solos and duos, up and coming musicians and buskers. A community market will feature local community group stalls and locally made arts and crafts. Musicians will lead a number of instrumental workshops. Andrew Davern, who will take the didgeridoo workshop, moved to North East Arnhem Land in 2000 to live among the Yolngu Indigenous people for two years. Mr Davern was adopted by an elder who taught him how to make

We believe this is one of the strongest and most diverse group of performers to appear in Australia at a one-day community festival.“ Tickets are on sale at moshtix.com.au, with early bird tickets available until the end of November. Baton handover for orchestra By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Lovers of orchestral music have a smorgasbord of live performances to choose from with three orchestras contributing to Geelong’s cultural life. Orchestra Geelong’s will announce a vibrant 2016 program to be directed by newly appointed and highly regarded conductor/organist Professor Mel Waters, now a Geelong local. The program adds to two concerts to be presented next year by a newly-formed Geelong Symphony Orchestra. Orchestra Geelong president Malcolm John said Geelong was well served for live orchestral music. “The fully professional Melbourne Symphony Orchestra gives five superb concerts a year in Costa Hall,” Mr John said. “We also have Orchestra Geelong (previously Geelong Community Orchestra) with 42 talented players from within our city.

“They bring a pleasing variety of quality music to appreciative audiences three times a year, and have done so for several years now.” Geelong Community Orchestra underwent a name change after more than 30 years, presenting three concerts a year. Orchestra Geelong presents programs including works from symphonies, classical and more modern pieces as well as well-known shows. The third Orchestra Geelong concert for 2015 will be directed by professional guest conductor Dr Kevin Cameron at 3pm on 29 November in the George Logie Smith auditorium, Keith Humble Centre, Aphrasia Street, Newtown. Music by great classical composers Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart’s beautiful 23rd Piano Concerto featuring Geelong pianist Tanika Richards will be performed. Tickets are adult $20, concession $15 and under 16 years free, available by calling 5231 5595 or 0409 333 782 and are available at the door.

New restaurant Vong Noodle Bar is a fusion of Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. Its convenient position at the heart of Geelong’s CBD makes it the perfect lunch break meeting spot for workers in the city and its proximity to the cinemas allows it to double as a great lunch or dinner stop after seeing a movie. The range of cuisine provides for a wide variety of menu options. Favourites include Vietnamese noodles, Thai red or green curries with rice and a choice of chicken or beef, and Chinese-style garlic prawns or garlic chicken with a side of rice and mixed vegetables. Chef and business manager Jhon Ung has worked in the industry for 20 years, with expe-

rience in Asian cuisine in both Melbourne and Geelong. “We opened just two months ago. So far the feedback from customers has been very good. People are enjoying the food and keep coming back,” Jhon says. “Our bubble tea has been quite popular. It comes in lots of different flavours like mango and green apple.” Being a reasonably new restaurant, Jhon is currently looking for more waiters to help support his team of restaurant staff. The noodle bar opens between 11am and 3pm and again for dinner from 5pm until 10pm at 168 Ryrie Street, Geelong. For take-away or bookings, phone 5224 2080.

FINALLY FRIDAY Concert child’s play for Sonus By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN It’s no coincidence that the five core members of Sonus Ensemble all had young children when the group developed the idea of a children’s hour concert. “Our kids have to sit through our concerts so we thought we would do something where kids and parents can come and feel relaxed,” clarinettist Vicki Hallett says. “It’s an opportunity to let children be children and yet enjoy quality music, in a less formal setting.” The informal setting is Drysdale’s Tuckerberry Hill berry farm where families can wine, dine or pick some berries to the strains of child friendly woodwind works.

“Parents want something different but not in a formal concert hall. This lets kids have a cultural experience. All kids need exposure to that and this is one way to do it.” Hallett says the ensemble is well used to the type of “accompaniment” children could provide. “Bring it on, we reckon,” she laughs. “We know what to expect. Besides having your own kids, we have all played at schools and performed concerts for school children.” The members of Sonus Ensemble are Suzanne Moodie (flute), Laura Schulze (oboe), Vicki Hallett (clarinet), Barney Ellis (bassoon) and Melinda Bell (French horn), all of Geelong. The free Children’s Hour concert is at 2pm on 22 November at Tuckerberry Hill, 35 Becks Road, Drysdale.

Guests at the two-course dinner would enjoy a cocktail on arrival before a fashion parade and a styling session, she said. The evening runs from 5.30pm to 8.30pm Tuesday at Mercure Function Centre. “Everyone’s welcome,” Lyle said. Tickets cost $50 for BPW members or $60 for non-members and at trybooking.com/JLYY. BPW Geelong is not-for-profit group founded in 1985 to empower local women “in all aspects of their life, including family, work, personal interests and wider communities”.

Snakes can be a huge threat to your pets. What to do: · Seek emergency assistance immediately · Keep pet as still as possible · Do not try to locate or kill the snake Preventative measures: · Clear backyards of tall grass and rubbish piles · Take care walking pets near waterways or bushy areas · Keep pets indoors at dusk and at night if possible Enquiries U Vet, 102 Fyans Street, Geelong, phone 5222 2139.

Pampering pooches to pieces It’s A dog’s life at Beck’s Boarding Retreat, with its new modernised accommodation almost ready for its canine residents. A new modern and air conditioned building provides even more exercise yards for furry family members, with a significant number of extra beds available. Beck’s philosophy ensures all dogs get personalised care and attention and the opportunity to socialise with staff or other social friends. “We love to get them out to exercise and socialise as much as we can,” Beck says. “Our aim is to provide the best quality care and enjoyment for all our guests. We will spend the time getting to know pets, to ensure they have a terrific time whilst staying with us. “That way pet owners can rest assured their pet will have a great holiday experience here, while they enjoy theirs.” Matching dogs socially (where possible) is part of the service, according to the dog’s age, size and breed. Day stays are also available, a great way to break up the week for dogs who love socialising. A family business, Beck’s Boarding Retreat is at 570 Forest Road North, Lara, phone 5282 8898, or visit becksboardingretreat.com.au.

With summer on the way, pet owners are being warned not to let their dogs or cats become one of the estimated thousands of snakebite statistics recorded in Australia each year. Dr Mark Davis says although the start of spring has been mild, there have already been a number of cases of snakebite treated at the University of Melbourne U-Vet Hospital in Werribee. There has also been a number of snakebite cases treated at U-Vet Geelong Animal Emergency. “Snake bites are becoming more common as we increasingly have housing encroach on their natural habitat,” Dr Davis said. The University of Melbourne U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital sees an average of 50 to 75 cases each snake season, U-Vet Geelong Animal Emergency sees between 10 to 20 cases per year, with dogs and cats bitten in equal numbers. Snakebite remains a huge problem for Australians and their beloved pets. Leading toxicologist Ken Winkel, also with the University of Melbourne, agrees snakebites are becoming more prevalent. “It’s an enduring problem - even in urban areas,” he said. “The idea that you can’t get an urban lifethreatening snakebite is, simply, incorrect.” Symptoms to look for if you suspect your pet has been bitten are: · Vomiting · Sudden weakness or collapse · Seizures · Dilated pupils · Blood in the urine · Rapid, shallow breathing

Whether it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.

Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

Juniors hit out in Milo In2Cricket competition at Murgheboluc.

SPORT Cats seeking confidence LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club was completely outclassed by Carlton last week in a game reduced to a one day fixture after a washout the previous Saturday. Batting first, Eammon Vines lead from the front with 61 while Hayden Butterworth continued his good form, top scoring with 65. The Cats declared their innings closed on 8/217 and quickly reduced the Blues to 2/13 but from there they had no joy as a 148-run stand put the game beyond reach, Carlton eventually cruising to a six wicket win. Geelong now hosts a two-dayer over the next two weeks against Campberwell and will look to

show signs of improvement for their own confidence, if nothing else. In the Geelong Cricket Association, the crucial match between St Joseph’s and Geelong City appears to be slightly in the favour of St Joseph’s after the reigning premier batted first and posted 7/255 from their 85 overs. Andrew Hodgson stood up with 68 while Adrian McCormack finished things off with a well-made 56 not out. For City, Luke Inglis made up for the absence of Kent Agg taking 3/62. St Joseph’s will know that a couple of early wickets, particularly that of Richie Oliver, will go a long way towards winning this game and getting its title defence back on track. In division two, Torquay made a competitive

score of 206 last Saturday against Modewarre and will need to make sure it’s enough if it is to stay within reach of the top six. Luke Adams top scored with 56 batting at number seven after his side fell to 6/104. For Modewarre, Dane McFarlane was the pick, taking 3/57 from a marathon 21 overs. Modewarre’s talented batting line-up should win this if it remains patient and bats its overs. And in division three, Meredith threw away a dream start to let Shelford back into the game. The Rams batted first and at 2/104 were well placed, even moving to 4/134, before the wheels really fell off and, in a clutter of wickets, were all out for just 162. Daniel Maclean was the star for Shelford taking 5/38.

COACH SCARLO: Matthew Scarlett at Geelong training last season. (Reg Ryan)

Defensive Scarlett returns as assistant Legendary defender Matthew Scarlett will take up an assistant coaching role with Geelong next season, the club has announced. Scarlett will oversee defence while Shane O’Bree takes over as VFL coach. Matthew Knights and James Rahilly will work with the Cats’ midfielders and Blake Caracella will be forwards coach. Last season’s VFL coach Paul Hood will become player development manager while Nigel Lappin will look after the academy program for the Cats’ younger players. The changes have been made under the appointment of Simon Lloyd as director of coaching, heading the performance and development of coaches and the player development program. “We are always working to improve our club and we think we have put together a very good

coaching structure,” Geelong’s general manager of football Steve Hocking said. “In Matthew Scarlett we have a person that was a fantastic defender in his own right and during his playing career he demonstrated a great knowledge of the game and an ability to communicate and pass on that knowledge. “Over the past three years Scarlo embarked on a coaching path in a part-time role and has shown the ability, aptitude and desire to take on a fulltime position. “To have him passing on his knowledge of the game to our defenders is a real positive for our team. “Shane O’Bree has worked well with our young players and will continue to do so in heading the VFL program, and it is also an opportunity for Shane to continue his professional experiences in

heading up that program. “Paul Hood did a very good job in that role last year and his new position will see him working with players’ overall development both on and off the field. “The remainder of our coaching staff have been with us in recent times and have done a very good job. “Some roles have changed to ensure they and the players have a fresh voice and fresh ideas in the various areas. “We want to keep challenging our players and coaches and to provide the best support for our team in its efforts to perform at its best. “With training now underway we are excited to get everyone on the track and get rolling towards the 2016 season.”

Snapper biting ON THE BITE Chris Pitman This year’s snapper season is going down as one of the most remarkable of recent times as anglers achieve results with new techniques. Colin Smith drifted along the channel edges off Clifton Springs with sabiki rigs to catch silver whiting for bait last Friday. After catching a couple he anchored up and soon caught a chunky 88cm snapper. Peter and Janice Clifton fished the same area on Sunday afternoon, boating a twokilogram snapper on a set-up intended for whiting. Their fish had ignored four other rods which were all intended for snapper. Calm conditions also tempted Duane Tribe to fish off Clifton Springs. He drifted the grass beds in three metres while casting artificial jigs, catching his bag-limit of squid. Anglers fishing Swan Bay’s channel entrance encountered pinkie snapper, gummy sharks and silver trevally. Fishing into the night led to catches of each species in large numbers. Queenscliff was again hot for big squid. Bell Reef and the Bight were best, with the average at 2.5kg. Those who fished at first light achieved the best results with the squid sometimes jig-shy amid large numbers of boats working the same ground. I fished the change of tide on the Barwon River estuary on Monday morning, boating a 93cm mulloway and silver trevally of 40cm. The cleaner run-in water really fired up the fish. Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, snapper and gummy shark were caught in 40m-plus. Fresh squid did the trick, with tide changes also helping. Australian salmon were caught from the rock platforms west of Lorne. Some reached 2kg and were keen to hit metal slugs. On the freshwater front, anglers caught brown trout to 2kg at Lake Purrumbete while trolling hard-body lures. Small redfin remained a nuisance but were available in big enough numbers for a feed. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir lived up to its reputation as the ‘The Lake of 1000 Casts’, with only small numbers of redfin banked. However, the few fish landed averaged 45cm and were mostly taken on Fish Arrow soft plastics used with heavy jig heads. Lake Eildon’s yellow belly kept visiting anglers such as Darren Wloch busy. Fishing the Deletite Arm, he boated a 65cm fish and noted they were falling for most tactics and schooling in large numbers. In the state’s northwest, Lake Toolondo continued producing trophy brown trout on live mudeye and shallow-diving hard-body lures. Anglers worked their lures and bait among the many submerged trees along the lake margins. Next week, anglers should focus on Clifton Springs as snapper season reaches its peak. Try something different and micro-jig the deeper water. Queenscliff should continue to give up large squid while salmon might be spotted feeding on the surface at the start of the outgoing tide. Freshwater anglers should persist with the east bank of Lake Purrumbete at first light.
