THE Cranbourne Racing Centre is gearing up to again host Australia’s busiest race meeting, the City of Casey Tricodes Night, on Saturday 21 November. The night brings together the three racing codes for one action-packed night featuring thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing. Renowned as the busiest race day in the country, there will be non-stop action in the space of five hours with 24 races to be held, eight from each code. Cranbourne Turf Club and Harness Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said the unique Tricodes event, which was now in its 14th year, was one of the most exciting and highly-anticipated events on the racing calendar. “There really is no other race meeting in the world like Tricodes Night, with all three tracks lit up at the one venue and constant racing action throughout the night - it’s a racing enthusiasts’ dream,” he said. “Cranbourne is one of the few unique venues in this country that hosts all three codes and it’s great we’re able to bring them together for this event each year to showcase what’s great about Cranbourne. “Racing plays a huge part in the City of Casey, with thousands of participants involved in the three codes as trainers, jockeys, drivers, owners,

Walkers are on a winning streak THE Cranbourne Harness Racing Club community capped off a successful 2014-15 season, taking out a number of awards at the 2015 Gordon Rothacker Medal night on Sunday at Tabcorp Park, Melton. Cranbourne’s top pacer Hectorjayjay, trained by local father-daughter team Simone and Bill Walker, was crowned the Victorian Four-Year-Old Entire/ Gelding of the Year, adding to his Cranbourne Trained Horse of the Year accolade he received in September. The Cranbourne Harness Racing Club was awarded the Best Presented Country Club/Venue for 2014-15, having last year completed a $4.5 million redevelopment of its grandstand and function space. The Victoria Harness Racing Sports Club (VHRSC) Owner of the Year award went to Merv and Meg Butterworth from Decron, who a huge supporters of the Cranbourne Harness Racing Club and sponsors of the Cranbourne Pacing Cup. Hectorjayjay had a stellar four-year-old season with Simone in the driver’s seat, winning 10 races and placings on five other occasions from his 16 starts to collect a total of $130,760

The Dream Away gelding celebrated the first Group level victory of his career when he won the Group 2 Breeders Crown Championship (4yo Entires and Geldings) in August, and was also runnerup in the Group 1 Vicbred Super Series Final prior to that. Simone said it was a great honour to take out
this year’s title. “It was a huge thrill for all of us involved in him to win, as well as those who have followed his journey as he’s got quite a fan club,” she said. “He’s been a super horse for us and he’s just done a top job all season, so it’s wonderful recognition of his great work.” Simone said their next
target for Hectorjayjay was to try and win their hometown cup. “We’re hoping we can have a crack at the Cranbourne Cup with him, it would be nice to win that,” she said. “We’ve had a couple of goes at it in the past but haven’t been good enough, so hopefully next year could be our year.”

Redeveloped grandstand a functions hit CRANBOURNE Racing Centre’s redeveloped grandstand and function centre has been open for just over a year now, proving to be a popular facility with racegoers and the community. The facility was reopened in October last year after undergoing a $4.5 million revamp and now boasts a variety of spaces for race day and non-race day functions. The centre has been a boon for the three racing clubs who call it home the Cranbourne Turf Club, Cranbourne Harness Racing Club and Cranbourne Greyhounds - allowing them to present an improved race day experience and better hospitality offerings. The centre has also been well supported by the community as a popular choice for events of all sizes, including recently hosting the Casey Car-

dinia Business Awards for a crowd of more than 400 people. Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge said it was great that the facility has been so wellreceived. “Cranbourne now offers a revamped, modern grandstand for racegoers to enjoy and a much-needed new function centre in the City of Casey,” he said. “It has been well received and supported by the community in the past year and I’m sure it will continue to grow in popularity and be a venue of choice for many events.” The Cranbourne Racing Centre function spaces include: Legends Room: A spacious room which can cater for a cocktail-style crowd of 850 or 600 people sit down. It has an on trend, industrial feel, is
adaptable for both small and large functions. Champions Room: The premier viewing dining room located on the second level of the grandstand, which caters for up to 200 people sit-down. It has an elegant feel with sweeping views of the racecourse and the Dandenongs. Committee Room: This room offers great views of the racecourse overlooking the mounting yard and is opposite the winning post. The Committee Room has a sophisticated feel, with its own step down tiered lounge filled with couches for comfort. TWO longstanding Sandown Racecourse festivals could be leaving Greater Dandenong, taking tourist dollars and ratepayers’ money with them. Clashes with cars and dark days of the past have left next year’s Chilean Latin American September Festival without a home. About 50,000 people usually celebrate the Vietnamese New Year at the Springvale venue but the Vietnamese Tet Festival will next year leave after a decade - and take $12,000 from ratepayers with it. Vietnamese Community in Australia (VCA) Victoria president Bon Nguyen said attendance had dwindled in the past five years. “Maybe people from the other side of the city think it’s too far,” he said. So the event will move to the Melbourne Showgrounds in an effort to attract more Vietnamese people from Sunshine, Footscray and Richmond. “Once we engage the community we can move it back to Sandown and bring them with us,” Mr Nguyen said. He said he didn’t expect the numbers from Greater Dandenong to drop.
“I know that they know the quality of the festival at Sandown,” he said. “The majority of the people from Springvale will go to the showgrounds. “We want to bring the festival back. “We won’t stay gone forever.” Greater Dandenong community services director Mark Doubleday confirmed that the council had endorsed a $12,000 sponsorship to the VCA to support next year’s Tet Festival, despite its Melbourne venue. “Council’s endorsed funding will remain in place for the 2016 event and the future location can be reviewed after the 2016 festival has concluded,” he said. The Chilean Latin American September Festival has also has taken place at Sandown Racecourse for the past 10 years after outgrowing its original Dandenong Showgrounds venue. Latin American Friendship Fonda la Clinica of Victoria president Miguel Santana said Sandown gave verbal confirmation the group could next year hold the event on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September, but had since advised the dates were unavailable. Festivals are left in doubt
Break-in burglar's caffeine craving By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DRUG-addicted and homeless refugee helped himself to coffee during burglaries of a Noble Park home and a shopping centre. Salay Yamoot, 35, pleaded guilty to multiple burglary, theft, drug and weapon charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 9 November. Yamoot had been found living in the Noble Park home, stealing food, alcohol and clothing while the resident was away for a week in January 2013. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Tess Davison told the court that police found the accused in the resident’s bedroom, wearing the victim’s clothing. A mix of tobacco and cannabis was found in the lounge room. Soon after his arrest, he was taken to Dandenong Hospital for a mental health assessment.
In May 2013, a Noble Park resident awoke and found Yamoot crouching behind his home’s bookcase about 7am. Yamoot had broken into the house overnight, drank a coffee, smoked cannabis and slept in one of the beds. Police found him with cannabis, as well as a chopping board with cannabis and tobacco under the couch. Two months later, Yamoot used large rocks to smash through an Officer shopping centre’s glass door and windows. Inside, the accused forced open and damaged roller doors on three stores, stealing an i-Pod, several cash register keys and making himself a coffee at a cafe. He was found by a security guard in Woolworths, having opened several food and drinks and taken two packets of cigarettes.
Arresting police seized cannabis and hashish, which were found in containers on Yamoot. During three pat-down police searches in Springvale this year, Yamoot had been variously found with a knife, pocket knife, cannabis, heroin and methamphetamine. On one occasion, Yamoot described a found substance believed to be hash as “Asian medicine” and suspected heroin powder as crushed prescription tablets. Yamoot’s lawyer told the court the accused had lived in a Burmese refugee camp for 10 years prior to arriving in Australia in 2008. Soon after his arrival, his marriage broke down, he started using harder drugs such as heroin and ice and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He had been admitted at least nine times to hospital psychiatric
wards since 2009, his lawyer told the court. The accused had been on-and-off homeless for the past four years, and had limited contact with his Springvale family due to his heavy drug use. A Forensicare specialist told the court that Yamoot’s mental health had improved after receiving two depot injections while in custody but that he needed continued care. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Yamoot’s homelessness and drug use complicated his mental health treatment. Yamoot’s recent offending was less serious than the 2013 burglaries, Mr Vandersteen said. He sentenced the accused to 60 days’ jail - which had already been served in remand. Upon the accused’s release, he was to be taken to Dandenong Hospital for a mental health assessment under the Mental Health Act.

NOBLE Park Secondary College has set its sights on supporting future footballers. It’s establishing a soccer academy which is set to kick off next year. A fete next weekend will promote the program and raise funds for facilities. Football technical director Aaron Symons will lead the program, which is designed to foster student focus on off-field and on-field skills. Teacher Helen Karagounis said academy members would have to balance their sporting passion with a focus on their studies. They must maintain an academic grade average and training will take place after school. Ms Karagounis said the college planned to develop partnerships to provide students with pathways into sporting careers and was hoping for government support. The fete will be held at Noble Park Secondary College, 3 Callaghan Street, Noble Park, from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 21 November.
From page 1 “The management of Sandown offered as alternatives the weekend prior or a week later,” he said. “One week earlier, the Chilean people are in mourning. “It coincides with 11 September 1973 - a date that is forever associated with a bloody coup d’etat and deposing and murder of the elected president Mr Salvador Allende and many other thousands of Chilean country men and women. “A week later the Chilean community do not celebrate, hence holding the festival on the date nearest to 18 September is key to the success of the festival.” Mr Santana said he’d assessed other venues but none met the festival’s requirements. He urged the council to lobby Sandown to change its decision. In July the council approved a $3000 one-off boost for the Latin American festival on top of the $12,000 Greater Dandenong Council sponsorship grant allocated in June. Councillor Maria Sampey said the festival catered for people from 13 countries and that visitors travelled from interstate and spent cash in the municipality. Cr Jim Memeti said it was a “fantastic event” and was one of the “biggest on our calendar”. An MRC spokesman said the festival occurred about the same time as the Sandown 500 and that the events would clash next year. “The Sandown 500 is an event that attracts some 60,000 attendees across its four days, with its origins dating back to around the foundation of the venue itself in the 1960s,” he said. “Given the size and long-standing nature of the Sandown 500, and the enduring relationship and arrangement between the club and V8 Supercars, that event takes precedence in terms of use of the venue.” Mr Doubleday said the council had offered the Chileans a council venue for next year’s event. “It is understood the organisers are considering the location options,” he said.

WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST-KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT CENTRAL DANDENONG’S FOSTER STREET, NAMED PERHAPS IN HONOUR OF EARLY SETTLER JOHN LESLIE FITZGERALD VESEY FOSTER.
Street namesake whips up a legal storm MANY have believed that Foster Street was named after the Foster family of Keysborough. However evidence points us in the direction of an earlier settler, John Leslie Fitzgerald Vesey Foster. Mr Leslie Foster (1818 -1900) is recorded as being the owner or lease holder of the Eumemmerring Run on the List of Runs at the Chief Secretary’s Office in 1845. This is the very early days of Dandenong when the main roads of Lonsdale, McCrae and Foster streets were named. The Keysborough Foster family did not come into the district until May 1855 and was not established in Keysborough until 1859. It is believed that the Eumemmerring Run was transferred to Mr Foster from Dr Farquhar McCrae in 1839. John Leslie Fitzgerald Vesey Foster was a nephew of Lord Fitzgerald, whose title he inherited.
Dr Farquhar McCrae by Georgiana McCrae 1832, held at National Galley of Australia.
WHAT’S IN A NAME? Foster, a trained lawyer, author and land owner, figured prominently in the colony’s conservative squatting element in Port Phillip in 1846-’48 due to his family connections. However in an episode which must have shaken the citizens of Melbourne in the 1840s, in 1843 Foster - feeling he had been thoroughly fleeced by Dr McCrae on a land sale - denounced McCrae and challenged him to a pistol duel. McCrae declined in provocative terms. Not long before Christmas 1843, McCrae was riding his horse up Queen Street when Foster waylaid him and whipped him so severely that McCrae fell off his horse in a most undignified manner.
Newspapers of the day record the legal proceedings under Judge Jeffcott on the matter. It appears ironic that when naming streets after the early settlers of Dandenong, the councillors of the period arranged for Foster Street to run into McCrae Street. LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 11 November 1915 The Prime Minister on the war Reply to criticism On Friday in the House of Representatives Mr Catts (NSW) referred to the lecture recently given by Mr Ashmead Bartlett on the Dardanelles Campaign, and the proposed lecturing tour in Australia. Mr Hughes, the Prime Minister, dealt with the matter referred to in a manner gratifying to Australians, and his spirited reply was heartily applauded by members. Mr Hughes said: “We have no responsibility in directing the campaign. “Our business is only to carry out the instructions of the Imperial Government. “We must give all the assistance we can (loud cheers) - and at all events we owe the Imperial Government this duty - refraining from criticising any position of vital responsibility (more cheers).
“They are listening to a thousand and one critics who have not the slightest authority, and whose criticisms ought not to be considered seriously. “I do not pretend to understand the situation, but I know what the situation of this Government is. “It is the duty of the Government to mind its own business (cheers) to provide that quota of men that the Imperial Government think necessary in the circumstances, and see that the men are efficiently led, equipped and fed. That we shall do (loud and prolonged cheers).” 50 years ago 10 November 1965 £6500 in fines says it cheaper! The grant which will see vigorous tree planting “bees” over the next 12 months has been welcomed by the Police Paddocks committee of management. “In the last three years the committee, with the help of Aboriginal employment programs, the friends of Police Paddocks, scouts, and other community groups, has planted 8000
trees. The grant will enable us to plant another 25,000 trees.” 5 years ago 8 November 2010 On Path for Fun Take advantage of the many walking and bike riding paths that pass through Greater Dandenong. Cycling enthusiasts can ride to Ringwood or Frankston on the scenic 35 kilometre EastLink Trail which travels along Jells Park, Mullum Mullum Creeks, Shepherds Bush, and the Edithvale wetlands. Mick Wirrick says strong fences make good neighbours. 146656
Picture: ROB CAREW
The land no one wants By CASEY NEILL MELBOURNE Water is washing its hands of sharing boundary fence maintenance costs in Springvale. The authority said it didn’t own the land behind homes and along Mile Creek but the City of Greater Dandenong said it could find no alternative owner. Mick Wirrick’s home in Sullivan Street backs onto Mile Creek and he said that in 2010 Melbourne Water covered half the cost of replacing his back fence. The fence needed repairs earlier this year so he got back in touch with the authority. However he was told that policies had changed regarding fencing and he was directed to contact Glendale Park Pty Ltd. He found the company was de-registered in 2004 so he contacted the council, but found no answers. “The situation is now no one is prepared to help us as residents find out who the owner of the land is,” Mr Wirrick said. “There’s a lot of people
whose houses back onto Mile Creek. We need to know who’s going to pay for half the fences. “In the time I’ve lived in this house I’ve seen so much happen. We’ve had kids swept away. “You don’t want to see a toddler walking through a house that hasn’t got a sturdy fence.” He said his neighbour was almost 90 years old and was saving for the full cost of replacing her fence. “That’s totally unfair,” he said. “She lives by herself so she’s concerned about her safety if the fence isn’t there.” Melbourne Water’s asset knowledge and systems manager Michael Gomez said the authority did not own the land around Mile Creek near Sullivan Street. “We only manage and maintain the functionality of the drainage channel,” he said. “In recent years Melbourne Water has reviewed their policy to be aligned with the Fences Act. “As a result of the review,

Melbourne Water share fencing costs for those properties whose fences border land owned by Melbourne Water only.” The council’s city planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said a search in January this year revealed the land was titled to Melbourne Water. “But Melbourne Water records showed the land was owned by Glendale Park Pty Ltd since 1960,” he said. “Our officers made contact with the relatives of people listed as company directors, but the relatives confirmed the land was no longer owned by them. “An exhaustive search was not able to identify a responsible person, other than Melbourne Water.” Mr Bosman said that the council could provide contact details for land owners to help neighbours sort out fencing issues. “But we are unable to force parties to co-operate,” he said. “In this case we can only refer the resident to Melbourne Water.”
Police on hunt for hit-run driver They said the driver was behind the wheel of an early model white Holden Commodore - possibly a VT or VX - and stopped 75 metres from the collision scene, got out of the car and walked back to where the woman was lying on the road. The man looked at the vic-
tim before running back to his car and driving away. The victim was taken to The Alfred hospital with serious injuries. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

JOURNAL OPINION Game changer THE City of Greater Dandenong has penned an open letter to Mr Monopoly after the south-east of Melbourne missed out on a place in the new Melbourne Monopoly game. Dear Mr Monopoly, Congratulations on the release of your latest game Melbourne Monopoly, it is sure to be a hit with local families this Christmas, however we noticed that Melbourne’s south-east has not even rated a mention. It is a shame that such an iconic region has been overlooked in this snapshot of Melbourne. We believe that Greater Dandenong alone is a real contender for some of those real estate hot spots. Take for instance the Dandenong Market, which next year celebrates its 150th anniversary. Livestock and locally grown fruit and veg were staples in the early years. Today there is a diverse range of cultures represented in the food, clothing and gifts for sale. Sitting atop the Market is arguably one of the region’s most iconic landmarks the Dandy Pig. The neon pig has been doffing his top hat to the world since the 1950s. So iconic is our pig that he was immortalised by Australia Post on a stamp, worth $1.40, in September this year. Known for our cultural diversity, Greater Dandenong is one of the most multicultural communities in Australia with residents coming from more than 150 different countries. We have several cultural precincts that are known far and wide, including Little India and the award winning Afghan Bazaar, both in Dandenong. But our best known precinct is sensational Springvale, which shows off the best of South East Asia. You can enter the precinct via the

Springvale Asian Gateway, which was launched just this year. Finally, Drum Theatre is not only visually pleasing with its striking clock tower and magnificent red drum design, but it also draws the crowds. In 2015 alone it hosted performances by Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet and Circus Oz. But don’t forget the Russian National Ballet Theatre which is bringing its touring show of Swan Lake to the central Dandenong theatre next month. Sure the MCG and Federation Square deserve to be on those two spots before players pass Go, but our community is also vibrant and iconic, and we love a family game night as much as Robert Doyle. Perhaps we could make the cut for a future version of Monopoly? Stay in touch. The City of Greater Dandenong.
Problem rooted out TO KARL Joseph of Noble Park re: your letter (Put Off Parking, Journal, 19 October) why do you need such large trees? Shade would be one answer and you might find that it would take at least 20 years for roots to lift concrete paths. Smaller trees are a problem in that they interfere with line of sight for motorists and pedestrians. Anything that only grows to two metres tall, as you suggest, is a bush and totally unsuitable for planting beside a busy road. I personally worked on the City of Springvale tree crew for quite a few years so I know all about tree-related problems. I am glad John Kelly has been a councillor for so long as he has a wealth of experience and forms unbiased opinions, unlike some. Mark Dalton, via web.

Greater Dandenong’s new mayor is Councillor Heang Tak. Gaye Guest: Disappointed with the choice for mayor! Cr Tak has hardly been seen in the community while he has been an elected representative. It has only been in recent weeks that he attended functions. Seriously how could he be voted in as mayor? At the next council election can we replace some of the dead wood in our councillors with fresh new vibrant representatives who are there for the residents and not their own political status? Every year there is some
controversy and a boil over. The numbers are clearly stacked and it would be wonderful to see some of the other councillors given a fair go at being mayor. Cr O’Reilly’s shoes will be hard to fill and Cr Tak will have to be far more visible across the municipality. I really wonder if he is up for the task. New Mayor Heang Tak was absent from his first council meeting as the new mayor. His wife today gave birth to their second child. Gaye Guest: Cr Tak, realising his own family commitments, should
never have been installed in the top job. With a young family he cannot give the amount of time necessary to fulfil this important role. The residents have not been considered in this decision. Brad Woodford: Have to agree with you Gaye. I haven’t seen him around much. Cue a Cr Peter Brown outburst about councillors neglecting Greater Dandenong residents by selfishly starting families when they should be serving the community.
SOCIALLY SPEAKING INSTEAD of promoting culturally and racially segregated soccer clubs, why don’t Rotary donate to a long-time established non-race/ culture based local club willing to encourage inclusion and assimilation? Steve, Dandenong North, via web.
RE: Tak triumphs in mayoral battle CONGRATULATIONS to councillor Tak for his mayor election. Cr Tak has worked extremely hard for the community and the ward he represented. It is by no coincidence that he has been elected as a councillor and ul-
timately the mayor of this great multicultural City of Greater Dandenong. Sok, Noble Park, via web. Colin Riddiford: Congratulation to Mayor Tak and his wife on the arrival of their second child.

Veterans’ trek By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS FOR three ‘young veterans’, 41 days of trekking from Wilson’s Promontory to the tip of Cape York ended in a minute’s silence on 11 November. Shane Dixon, Christopher May and Katie Batham, all ex-servicepeople of the south-east Melbourne based group Young Veterans, held their own Remembrance Day service at the Australian mainland’s northernmost point. It co-incided with Berwick veteran Christopher’s 26th birthday and the end of a relentless journey via schools, RSLs and community centres across the continent. Travelling in two ex-Army Land Rovers donated by Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL, the group spread the word that struggling young veterans weren’t alone, and support such as counselling was available. It was a fitting way to end the journey that started with a phone call between mates two years ago, Chris-
topher’s brother and co-founder Scott May. Mr May stayed back in Pakenham for this mission, but spoke to his brother Christopher before the group started on the long road home. “We achieved the goal we set out to achieve - that is raising awareness with a younger group of veterans in the community. “It’s been a good stepping stone to open that door, to open that line of communication with young and older veterans. “We want to say that the RSL can offer more than a cheap pot of beer and a meal to the younger veterans.” During the trek, the group touched base with ex-service vets, who were injured and for whatever reason had not accessed support services. Some were given a bit of a boost by hopping in for a drive with the Young Veterans convoy. That convoy of vehicles was sym-
bolic of veterans in a way - they’re older and no longer required for military service, Mr May says. It’s not just the horrifically injured vets that have needs, there’s the mentally scarred and those struggling to fit back into civilian life. “I think the government at the time when the Afghanistan (conflict) was at the fullest point, it was unprepared for the flood of demand. “The systems are in place now but people don’t know they’re there. “I think the RSL need to pick up the slack and welcome the veterans in.” The convoy also discovered a deep well of good will with RSL clubs, other ex-service groups such as Cam’s Cause, Soldier On and Veterans off the Streets. On the way, there were emotional points such as during the hand-delivery of quilts made by Berwick group Quilts of Valour to veterans. “The amount of blokes contacting us to say thank you (for the quilts),
Shane Dixon, Katie Batham and Christopher May at the journey's end point - the tip of Cape York. who were moved by receiving that as a gift. “That’s what we’re about - people connecting and helping each other. “There’s a lot of good will out there. It’s just people don’t know what to do with it.”
On their return, there are further activities planned for vets such as sailing on Port Phillip, as well as weekend camps and motorbike rides. For details visit youngveterans. com.au

THERE was no way Albert ‘Bert’ Wragg was going to miss today’s Remembrance Day service. The former Royal Naval Air Service first-class engine fitter hasn’t missed since joining up in 1976. Mr Wragg sat in his motorised scooter to the side of the 150-strong crowd at Dandenong’s Pillars of Freedom service. He stood, not without a stumble, to pay tribute during the Last Post and a minute’s silence, to throw down a red poppy at the cenotaph and then for the Australian and British national anthems. He makes the effort because he remembers relatives that served, including an uncle who died at the Somme.
“This day means so much to me,“ Mr Wragg said. “It’s great that in my life I remember. It’s not a day of mourning, it’s Lest We Forget.“ Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president John Wells made mention of Mr Wragg’s “colossal“ effort. Mr Wells said young people could learn from the Harmony Village resident’s spirit and commitment. “These old soldiers will keep getting out of bed and wheelchairs for this. “The message we should get from this is it’s about those values: duty, responsibility and sucking it up when life gets hard. “No-one said it’s been a long, hard season, so let’s have a bye.“

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DANDENONG-based legal service says the State Government’s push for 25-year jail terms for ice dealers around schools would be better ploughed into rehab services. Under the legislation introduced on 10 November, the maximum jail term could apply to people dealing drugs in public within 300 metres of a school. The government also introduced a 20-year maximum jail term for people supplying drugs to a dealer near a school. Casey Cardinia Legal Service principal solicitor Vera Hardiman said more resources needed to be put into rehab. “It’s great they’re cracking down but there are people wanting to get off ice who are waiting for four months. “With rehab, they address the client’s whole attitude to life so it may prevent them trying other drugs in the future.” Premier Daniel Andrews told Parliament he made no apologies for the tough penalties to tackle what was an “evil poison ... causing untold dam-

age and harm”. “This is not just a message but the full force of the law.” In pumping up the laws, Police Minister Wade Noonan however also conceded “we can’t simply arrest our way out of this problem”. The government’s Ice Action Plan itself is a mixture of carrot and stick. It also provides support for families, treatment, funding to protect frontline workers and powers to close down manufacturers. Victims of Crime Association founder Noel McNamara said it wouldn’t matter if the government prescribed 100year maximums because “the judge sets the minimum”. “The judge seems pretty lenient in cases I have seen that have been drug related. “The government should set a minimum of 75 per cent if they plead guilty.” Sam Biondo, executive director of Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association, said the law alone could not solve the ice problem. “Most people know it’s just

one part of the solution. “What we’re dealing with is a complex set of issues and the solutions necessarily have to be complex. “These sorts of measures on the whole are more about symbolism than substance.” Mr Biondo said the government’s action plan on the whole made “good, positive first steps” such as more nonresidential treatment programs, harm reduction and workplace training programs. However its push for more drug-detection dogs may be counter-productive. “It could lead to people in nightclubs quickly ingesting all the drugs they have (to avoid detection),” Mr Biondo said. Mr Biondo urged for the expansion of the Dandenong Drugs Court, diversion programs, residential rehab and education on the topic. The proposed laws also introduce lengthy jail terms to offenders using threats to force someone to traffic illicit drugs, and those publishing or possessing instructions on trafficking or cultivating.
Earlier the same day, a 25-year-old Doveton man died while servicing an air-conditioning unit in Braeside. The man was electrocuted during routine maintenance on the roof of the Canterbury Road site about 10.30am, Victoria Police said. He died at the scene. WorkSafe is investigating both incidents.

A CONMAN is $9000 richer and on the run after pulling off a tyre swindle in Dandenong. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Jamie Cummings said a man on Tuesday 26 October offered to sell truck tyres to TCB Transport. “The owner regularly deals with sales reps in relation to tyres and presumed this was legitimate,” he said. “He told the offender to reattend with the tyres and he would accept the offer.” The swindler called Goodride Tyres in Huntingdale, said he was the TCB manager and ordered 72 truck tyres to be delivered to TCB on Thursday 29 October - a $22,800 purchase. At 9.40am he flagged down the Goodride delivery truck driver outside TCB and climbed aboard. Det Sen Const Cummings said the driver spoke limited English.
Police are searching for this man. “The driver is in no way a suspect,” he said. “He’s been swept up in it without realising.” The driver pulled the truck into the property and the conman got out, told the business owner the tyres he’d ordered had arrived and requested $9000 payment.
“The owner has written out a $9000 cheque made out to cash,” Det Sen Const Cummings said. The conman helped the driver and TCB factory workers unload the tyres, said the truck driver had no identification to cash the cheque and asked a TCB worker to accompany him to the bank. The driver and a TCB worker went to ANZ in Lynbrook, returned and handed the cash to the conman, who left the scene in a gold-coloured SUV, possibly a Toyota Land Cruiser 2000 series. “At no point was his actions questioned by any parties involved,” Det Sen Const Cummings said. He said TCB had returned the tyres and Goodride had reimbursed TCB the $9000. Det Sen Const Cummings urged anyone with information or who had fallen victim to a similar scam to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A THIEF is wanted for using a stolen credit card in Springvale and other areas to buy cigarettes, a skateboard, gift cards and alcohol. The purchases of nearly $400 occurred in six stores in Frankston, Springvale and Mulgrave between 12.30-3pm on 13 October. Each of the purchases were under $100, enabling the thief
to exploit tap-and-go technology. CCTV stills of a wanted man have been released by Frankston CIU detectives. He is described as late 40s, Caucasian, wearing a black beanie, glasses, a black jumper, blue jeans and sneakers. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN accused of spitting on his partner and pushing her backwards onto a coffee table has won judicial praise for changing his ways. The 27-year-old Dandenong IT worker had thrown a glass and food on the floor as the couple’s baby cried during a dinner-time argument, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 9 November. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Tess Davison said the man then spat on his wife’s face and squeezed her neck. In the midst of the assault, he took the baby from her arms. As he held the child, the accused pushed the victim, causing her to
fall back and smash a coffee table. The man told police that he pushed away the victim as he tried to leave, admitting she had “done no harm to me”. The accused, who had a prior assault conviction involving his brother, pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife. The man’s lawyer told the court that the man and his partner had not committed to separation, though he now lived with his parents. “He was undergoing a lot of stress due to having a new child and his work. “He never had the chance to undergo counselling and talk about his feelings.” The man had since attended and
committed to a men’s behaviour change course in the hope of regaining his family and rebuilding a healthy relationship with his wife. “This particular behaviour is out of character. He doesn’t generally act in anger,” the lawyer said. “It is quite shocking to members of the family that this occurred.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the man’s “disgraceful” behaviour demeaned his wife, and described him holding the baby from her as a powerplay. “Do you spit in your boss’s face at work and throw things on the ground? Do you punch on with the referee? “What makes it worse is she’s your wife. If there’s anyone you
should respect, it’s her.” Mr Vandersteen, however, praised the man for booking into the men’s behaviour course - an action that few offenders initiate. For that reason, the man was convicted and placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond. Under the bond, he was ordered to pay $750 to the court’s charitable fund and complete the men’s behaviour program. Mr Vandersteen, however, extended an interim intervention order protecting the victim until a further hearing in January. “If you want to wear that ring and work towards reconciliation you have to prove that it won’t happen again.”

Dazzling Diwali spirit in Dandy DANDENONG Plaza got shoppers into the Diwali spirit on Saturday. The centre hosted Bollywood dance performances, free henna art and a craft workshop for kids on 7 November. The Festival of Lights, Diwali, means ‘a row or series of lights’ and is a time for reflecting, cleansing and celebrating the victory of light over darkness. A Hindu legend traces Diwali to Lord Rama, a descendant of the Hindu God Vishnu, who returned to his kingdom following 14 years in exile and won a battle against a demon king. The festivities continued on Sunday 15 November at Dandenong Market. Visitors enjoyed traditional sword dancing, a Rangoli artist, festive face painting, turban tying and henna hand art. Bollydazzlers dressed in dazzling Bollywood costumes performed to Indian music. Bhavesh Mahant from Curry and Chaat Corner joined chef Russell Bald in The Kitchen sharing insights into festive cooking.

A CRANBOURNE South woman has been dragged by a car along a Dandenong roadside in an internet sale gone wrong. Police said two vehicles pulled into a car park on Stud Road about 12.45pm on Monday 9 November. The victim, 26, and the passenger from the other car got out to make the exchange. She handed over the item but changed her mind when the buyer returned to his car. The woman reached inside the window to take the item back and police said the man held onto the item and the driver drove off with the woman still reaching in through the window. The passenger assaulted her while the car continued to move, before pushing her onto the road. The two men are described as about 35 years of age and Caucasian in appearance, one with possible European heritage and the other of Middle Eastern appearance. They were in a red or maroon-coloured Ford Fairmont or Falcon. The victim suffered minor injuries but police said she was “fairly shaken up”. They urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

DANDENONG'S Little India looks likely to be announced as the home for the new State Government-backed Indian Cultural Precinct. Premier Daniel Andrews couldn’t confirm a decision when in Dandenong last week, but did have this to say: “I can’t make any announcements about the Indian Cultural Precinct today but, hopefully quite soon, I’ll be able to come back and talk to you about it.” FENG shui didn’t come into play when planning parking ticket machine placement in Springvale. Councillor Youhorn Chea told the 9 November council meeting that blocking a business’s front door was bad luck in Asian culture. City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said the machine in question was not obscuring any shop, though couldn’t vouch for its adherence to feng shui principles. “When it comes to garbage bins, parking metres and park benches, that isn’t one of the criteria,” he said. NEW Mayor Heang Tak was on 9 November absent from his first council meeting since his election. His excuse? His wife gave birth to their second child earlier that day. Cr Tak told the Journal it was three months before their first child, Lawson, had a name. He joked that they might aim for two months this time around. Congratulations from the Journal.
The cleaner told police he didn’t realise he had stolen the items such as a police-issue torch, baseball cap and lanyard because they had been discarded in bins. “I love the police and I love their property,” he told police at the time. With no prior convictions, the man was given a good-behaviour bond.
DANDENONG woman Hasina Chowdury drove away from Dandenong Genesis in a new Volkswagen Polo on Monday 9 November. She won a national campaign which offered anyone who took up a membership trial during October the chance to win a car. Genesis CEO Ian Jensen-Muir and franchise owner Sean Whitaker congratulated the winner. 146614 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS the 64 alcohol breaches he racked up in the previous year. The judge told the man to return in six months - but only if he had a clean sheet. Hope he doesn’t blow it! BOORAN Holden’s bare appearance of late is nothing to worry about. After receiving calls asking whether a move or redevelopment were on the cards, the Journal put in a call to the dealership last week and was assured “the yard is well and truly full”. It was cars making way for bitumen cleaning that caused all the concern.
A LUCKY Keysborough shopper is $1 million richer - but doesn’t know it. TattsLotto is waiting for the winner to claim their share of the 31 October first division prize, with a ticket purchased from the Lucky Corner Lotto.
MORE than 150 people have signed a petition calling on Greater Dandenong Council to install a drinking fountain for thirsty dogs at Frederick Wachter Reserve in Keysborough. The council is considering the request.
ONE blow of 0.02 in the past 12 months halted a drink-driver’s application at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to have his four-year alcohol interlock removed. His efforts were a slight improvement on
SOME people, perhaps, love the police too much. A former cleaner at the Victorian Police Academy not only lost his job but faced court on theft charges after taking home some souvenirs.
IT’S probably too late now but maybe you should have reconsidered getting that facial tattoo - especially if you’re a crim. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that a man who had stolen a smartphone from a cafe returned to the scene of his crime months later. Unfortunately for him, his elaborately inked bonce and face jolted the cafe owner’s memory... and led to his date in court. SOME high reverence was shown towards a member of the judiciary in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. A spectator’s mobile phone rang and chimed several times in the gallery - which is definitely against court protocol. On the third ring, its owner stood, faced the judge and crossed himself. Then he made a speedy retreat out the door as he answered his phone. THOSE who represent themselves in court are said to have a fool for a lawyer. But maybe not one hardened criminal who defended himself with expletive-laden gusto in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The man got worked up into such furious diatribe - mainly about police persecuting him and hiding a “drone” in his car - that three police officers were called to keep an eye on things. The judge kept his cool, aside from some warnings about the man’s cluster of C- and F-bombs. He thought it better to let the man talk on because he was so “fired up”, the judge said. In the end, the man’s “I don’t deserve jail” defence won mainly because the judge said there was no point. The man had already done 15 years behind bars and would “do it on his ear”.
Career information for School leavers Many of us do not want to spend years attending university when we finish school. Importantly, many of us are not comfortable attending large impersonal TAFE Colleges where we become another number.

There is another way. True Blue Mates (TBM) is a private College (RTO) and as such provides many benefits to students not always available through some other training facilities. Career qualifications offered are identical to TAFE College courses. Qualifications delivered by TBM meet exactly the same quality standards as any other learning institute delivering competency based training and assessment. These qualifications are nationally recognized and are valid in all states of Australia.
Christmas Day Buffet Lunch and Buffet Dinner
Other good news is that Victorian and Federal Government funding is available to eligible students* who enrol with TBM, and as a result these students will not need to obtain Vet Fee help which would have to be repaid at a later date.
Celebrate Christmas day in fine festive style at Novotel Melbourne Glen Waverley with an extensive buffet lunch and dinner including a selection of seafood, time honoured carvery, traditional desserts, selected beverages and more.
We all like a reward for our efforts and if you are even considering employment and a long term career in Child Care, Aged Care, Home and Community Care, Disability or Community Services, TBM will support you as you acquire the skills and qualification needed to realize your own reward.

Frustration at firey forum Get involved and have your say on a new bus route for Keysborough South
By CASEY NEILL ABOUT 50 people put Keysborough South in the spotlight at a fiery forum on Wednesday 11 November. Councillor Matthew Kirwan said frustration arose about the lack of community infrastructure in the area. Hot topics included the Keysborough South Community Hub project, the Tatterson Community Sports Complex project and lobbying for a school and a bus route. Cr Kirwan said construction of the Tatterson Park Community Sports Complex would start mid-next year and the public could comment on hub design concepts early next year. “Planisphere Consultants were on hand to talk to residents more about the hub to aid in coming up with those design concepts,” he said. Cr Kirwan said residents were also glad to hear that the education department was considering a P-12 school rather than just a primary school. “They were frustrated with no definite news yet, though impressed that the joint efforts of the council and the Keysbor-
The Victorian Government is proposing a new bus service for Keysborough South. Public Transport Victoria will be holding a workshop and would like to hear your views on the proposed bus service, and your general travel needs and priorities. Staff from PTV will also be available to talk through the proposal at a local drop-in session.
Workshop details Wednesday, 18 November 2015, 6.30pm – 7.30pm Keysborough College – Senior Village, Acacia Campus 28 Isaac Rd, Keysborough
ough South Community Action Group is building momentum on this issue,” he said. Cr Kirwan said there were also positive signs on the bus route push, with Public Transport Victoria announcing a workshop at Keysborough College, 28 Isaac Road, Keysborough, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on 18 November. Keysborough South Action Group spokeswoman Nina Kelly co-presented with the council on the bus route and school campaigns. She said residents asked about the possibility of a swimming pool for Keysborough, pointing out that the original Tatterson Park master plan from the 1990s included water pipes for a swimming pool. “That is why the building is set so far back from Cheltenham Road,” Ms Kelly said. Also in the spotlight were traffic issues on Chapel Road, particularly at the roundabout shared with Church Road and Donnici Drive. “Traffic is backing up down all three roads for a minimum of five minutes, waiting for the lights to change at Dan-
denong Bypass during peak hour,” Ms Kelly said. “Only about 70 per cent of new housing construction is finished along Church Road.” Other issues raised included transport companies using Chapel Road to avoid paying EastLink tolls to reach their depot, and a lack of Melbourne Water maintenance on waterways. Ms Kelly met with South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Inga Peulich on 6 November. On 10 November, Ms Peulich asked Education Minister James Merlino in Parliament “what plans are afoot to develop the capacity of the local area to cater for the growth, and are there any time lines for the construction of a new school, which is clearly needed, especially given the growth in the Keysborough area?” Community Hub building consultation will start with an online survey and pop-up event Parkmore Shopping Centre from 10am on 28 November. The council is also welcoming discussion at www. facebook.com/groups/keysboroughsouth.
Bridges to better understanding
Drop-in session details
STUDENTS are taking lessons of tolerance, understanding and acceptance to their school communities and beyond. Lyndale Secondary College and Dandenong High School on Wednesday 11 November completed social cohesion program Building Bridges in the Dandenong council chambers. The group of 30-plus Year 9 and 10 students discussed better ways to negotiate, respect and engage with each other’s differences. They completed activities with members of the City of Greater Dandenong’s Youth Think Tank to learn resilience strategies, peace building and conflict management skills. The students also shared personal stories and experiences of faith, religion, and culture. They’ll now return to their school communities to put their new skills and knowledge into practice with support from the council’s Youth and Family

COUNTRY & COASTAL KOOWEERUP A step back in time but with all the modern conveniences, that’s what the historical property The Grange at Kooweerup offers. This is a family home steeped in history and dating back to 1888. Traditionally maintained, this landmark property now looks like something straight out of a movie set. Set on more than a third of an acre or 1769 square metres in the heart of Kooweerup, it oozes the character of yesteryear with soaring 12 foot ceilings, Baltic pine flooring, pine walls and an open fire. Boasting a gourmet country kitchen, leading out the French doors to the country setting, it is the perfect place to contemplate the possibility of subdivision or just enjoy the land where the new owners can watch the kids run free. Other features include four bedrooms, a renovated bathroom and period features. This is a chance to own a little bit of history. Carpenters William and Bob Ferguson began building the house, originally known as The House Run in 1887 for

the Hudson family. The ketch Kermande brought in building materials to the Yallock Creek to be carted up to Yallock or better known later as the Koo Wee Rup township. Mr Hudson died before moving in at aged 55 with Mrs Hudson and the rest of the family finally moving in on October 1888 and living in the house until Mrs Hudson died in 1913 at the age 86. It has been the scene of many important events in Kooweerup’s history. The railway line was constructed through the property in 1890 from Tooradin to Nyora and Korumburra while Koo Wee Rup Dairies began on the site in 1899. By 1911 the Hudsons’ 39 cows were producing four cheeses daily. After the Hudsons, the property became the family home of four generations of Walkers and at one stage it operated as a horse stud. The Walkers finally sold the property at auction in 1995. Now, with the property due to go to auction on 28 November, a new family has a chance to write another page in The Grange history book. 1206844

BLESSED WITH BEAUTY Cape Paterson is a coastal town in the south-east of Victoria which is surrounded by ocean, native parkland and rural properties. It has a permanent population of 700 that grows significantly in the summer due to its reputation as a premier holiday destination in eastern Victoria. The Cape at Cape Paterson is a residential estate in a geographically blessed location. In addition to the benefits of its naturally beautiful coast, it is also only 10km from the regional centre of Wonthaggi or an hour’s trip from Melbourne’s south-eastern growth corridor. The State Government has identified Wonthaggi as one of six growth centres of Victoria to accommodate the state’s
predicted 2041 population. The new community is an opportunity to buy into an area which will grow but offer the beachside location as Wonthaggi sees its own growth occur. There are strict controls on the Cape Paterson town boundary and the revision of the township to incorporate The Cape development is a rare opportunity to purchase within a new land release plus to be a part of a boutique eco-development that will add a premium to the property’s value. The Cape is a residential community in Cape Paterson featuring more than 50 per cent open space. It has been designed to showcase contemporary sustainability ideals which go hand-in-hand with modern living.
This is a leading community development for modern, sustainable housing in Australia. Sustainable architecture is integral to the built form at The Cape with all residences having a minimum 7.5 star energy rating. They retain heat in winter and stay cool in summer and ensure year-round comfort and cost savings. The Cape showcases 10 architect designed homes that meet the energy rating so buyers can choose from these or build their own customized design to reflect their own personality. Early investment in The Cape is predicted to see great growth as the community grows. Titles for stage one at The Cape are currently available and offer ocean views
and are close to the community precinct which is to become the future heart of the development. Current available blocks range from 440 to 660 square metres. Visit www.liveatthecape.com.au or the Land Sales and Information Centre for further information.

A DEADLY disaster sent Joseph Manuel Kierulf on a mission to better himself. He’s now living in Noble Park, studying a Diploma in Hospitality and Diploma in Management at Chisholm Institute in Dandenong, and is a finalist for a Victorian International Education Award. On 1 December Joseph will find out if he’s the International Student of the Year in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) category. The nomination recognised his fund-raising efforts for the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation and volunteer work at the Melbourne Good Food and Wine Show - and puts him in the running for a $10,000 scholarship to contribute to his studies in Victoria. “I am deeply honoured and happy. I never imagined that I could be chosen as a finalist for this prestigious award,” Joseph said. “After Typhoon Haiyan struck my home town in Cebu, Philippines, I decided that I wanted to better myself. “I made the decision to come and study in Australia because the education system here is among the best in the world and it is easy for me to communicate in English.” The Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation helps students through a scholarship program. “I had heard the story of Caroline Chisholm and was deeply moved by her,” he said. “I have volunteered my time this year and last year for this foundation.” At the Melbourne Good Food and Wine Show he helped with preparation for the Laucke Creative Kitchen. “There was a total of 52 shows over three days in the creative kitchen,” he said. “At the Sydney show I prepped and set up the stage for Karen Martini. “After completing my studies I plan to work in the hospitality industry. “My career goal is to become a hospitality manager. “I want to practice what I have learnt in the industry here in Australia in my home country.”
Joseph Manuel Kierulf. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert said all student award recipients would become ambassadors of the State Government’s Study Melbourne initiative and help promote the state as a leading international education destination. “International education is a vital part of Victoria’s economy and these awards will help showcase the fantastic results that can be achieved from studying at a Victorian university or vocational education provider,” Mr Herbert said.

JENNY Andrews possesses a showbag of memories from the Dandenong Agricultural Show. One of 13 children, eight of them fostered, the show was an annual treat eagerly anticipated by Jenny and her siblings. Later Jenny, who lives in Doveton, went to the show each year to watch her late husband, Albert, perform with his band, Country Pride. On Saturday, Jenny was among the thousands who flocked to the 144th show. “I always came as a child,“ said Jenny. “I loved the cattle. I wasn’t a showbag kid. There were 13 kids so there wasn’t money for that sort of thing. Mum used to make a whole lot of food and we’d have a picnic just there,“ she said, pointing to the wire fence that separates Greaves Reserve from the railway line. “We could see the horses from there.“ She remembers the pretty coloured fairy floss, the school dancing competitions and the grand parade “always held at 3pm“. “It’s just a tradition to come to the show. Even though I’ve lost my hubby I still come. “I feel I should come.“ In the animal pavilion Joyce Hanmer takes a break from her spinning wheel to show Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan her knitted replica of the Dandy Pig. Joyce can’t remember how long the toy took to make, but by far the hardest part was his blue top coat and tails the details of which she collected as mental notes over many visits to the Dandenong Market. She loves Dandenong’s most famous symbol, remembering how the pig greeted people as they arrived in Dandenong from Gippsland, and said she was thrilled
the pig was recently featured on an Australia Post stamp. Joyce has spun wool for 30 years, and was a spinning and weaving steward on the weekend. With a hat made of wool she spun herself perched on her head, Joyce showed fascinated children how raw wool is spun into yarn. “Boys are interested in how it works and girls are interested in the end result,“ she smiled.
“
Eunice McMurray As a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign, this year’s show included a special Anzac biscuit competition. Fifteen entrants vied for the $200 prize judged by Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president John Wells. John, who is a Vietnam veteran, is no slouch when it comes to Anzac biscuits. In 1967 the girl who would later become his wife sent a tin of the iconic biscuits to John during his tour of duty. He reckons he might be one of the last soldiers to eat Anzac biscuits in a war zone. “The standard (as the show) was good,

but many were too big,“ he said. “Anzacs were traditionally square so they could be packed and shipped. And they should be hard, a lot of them today were soft. I like a more traditional Anzac biscuit.“ The winning Anzac, a well proportioned biscuit with a nice crunch, was baked by show committee member Jeff Tully. Betty Bassett reckons she has been going to the Dandenong Show for 50 years, possibly more. At 88 she can be forgiven for not quite remembering her first visit. Betty, a long time Journal reader, was a steward in the art and craft pavilion for many years and her brother-in-law Roy Bassett was show president. Her husband Norm used to give lapidary demonstrations and the couple always took their children to the show. Betty even remembers “when the show was at the back of the market“. “The art and craft is the best. I love looking at the cooking,“ Betty smiled as she hurried off towards the animal pavilion. “It’s wonderful that it’s kept its agricultural roots.“ Hallam’s Eunice McMurray used to demonstrate wool spinning at the Dandenong show. She had hoped to buy a fleece on Saturday after the shearing demonstration, so was disappointed to find out the shearing was scheduled for Sunday. She thinks the show is an important part of Dandenong’s heritage. “The heritage of this area was on the land. It’s important for kids to see chickens and ducks and all the other animals. “I saw a little boy go up to an alpaca and say ’hello horsie’. “It’s nice for people to get back to grass roots.“

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Premier is super primed By CASEY NEILL PREMIER Daniel Andrews has put his support behind a manufacturing super showcase which is set to stop traffic in Dandenong next May. The Drum Theatre stage hosted a launch for the Dandenong and South East Manufacturing Super Event on Tuesday 10 November. Committee for Dandenong, South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) and the City of Greater Dandenong are working together on the National Manufacturing Week event. The launch was designed to drum up financial support to employ an international events co-ordinator. Committee for Dandenong chairman Gary Castricum said last year’s Dandenong on Wheels event had impact. “We got their attention,” he said. “This time we’d like to close the main street to really get people’s attention. “We don’t want to hear about the woes of Ballarat and Geelong, do we?
“We want students and future engineers to believe the City of Dandenong is a good place to work.” Mr Castricum said the showcase would also paint a positive picture for future customers, investors and suppliers. “We’re working with government to bring a super reverse trade mission into Dandenong for that event,” he said. Already financially committed to the event are Actco-Pickering, Bombardier, Chisholm, Cardinia Shire Council, Hilton Manufacturing, Iveco, M and K Lawyers, Norden Body Works, Volgren and Cablex. Mr Castricum encouraged more businesses to get on board. Mr Andrews told the Journal that there was a lot of good work going on in the south eastern suburbs and he looked forward to attending the showcase. “People are trying very hard to not just talk about a new economy and new jobs but to create those really important opportunities - new products into new markets - using all the skills that we’ve got now to try and shape the fu-

Caroline’s doing fine in the line
Next steps forward By CASEY NEILL THREE Greater Dandenong manufacturers will share $10.5 million to expand their operations. Bombardier Transportation in Dandenong, Aluminium Industries in Dandenong South and Walkinshaw Automotive Group in Springvale have been successful in their applications to the Next Generation Manufacturing Investment Programme. They’ll also each pitch in cash to make their projects a reality. Bombardier received $3.2 million towards new assembly lines for robotic welding and electrical propulsion equipment, and extending its final assembly and testing facilities. Aluminium Industries will use its $2.3 million grant to establish a new facility in Dandenong South to manufacture aluminium components for the light and heavy transportation industries. It will include Australia’s larg-
est linear computer numerical control (CNC) machinery. Walkinshaw’s $5 million grant will establish facilities in Springvale for vehicle modifications. Federal Industry, Innovation and Science Minister Christopher Pyne said the investment would help to attract private investment in the sector. Victorian Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said it was excellent to see that Victorian manufacturing firms are keen to invest in extending their capability to remain competitive and reach new markets. “The programme will encourage the growth of advanced manufacturing operations including in the defence, transportation, pharmaceutical and medical device sectors,” she said. The Australian, Victorian and South Australian Governments jointly fund the $60 million Next Generation Manufacturing Investment Programme.

CAROLINE Kennedy has paved the path for other women to a top job in the male-dominated building industry. She’ll share her story at SEBN’s Showcasing Women Breakfast on Friday 20 November. Ms Kennedy also created Gift Wrapped Up, wrote The Power of Wow, and was this year a Telstra Business Women’s Awards finalist. The SEBN Showcasing Women Breakfast will run from 7am to 9am at Highways, at the corner of Princes Highway and Corrigan Road, Springvale. Book by Monday 16 November at www.greaterdandenong.com.

Get back on track OSTEOPATHY is a well-established system of diagnosis and treatment using manual therapy to treat a wide range of problems affecting muscles and joints. Osteopaths search for the cause of pain and treat the body as a whole to help its recovery process to ensure that it is functioning at an optimum level. Common issues treated are migraines, tendonitis, fasciitis, hip, knee and foot pain, arthritis, postural and mobility problems, sciatica, acute and chronic injuries, pregnancy and muscular problems. On the first appointment osteopaths allow an hour to discuss the complaint in detail and provide a full examination and treatment. The follow-up appointment is 30 minutes long during which time patients receive undivided attention for the treatment which makes extensive use of soft tissue massage to relax the overlying muscles.
See how osteopathy can help. Joint movement techniques such as articulation, mobilization, and manipulation are used to relive pain arising from areas that are inaccessible to massage. The discs, joints, and ligaments as well as the deepest muscles can be reached and treated with movement. Phone 9701 1169 or visit www.totalosteo.com.au.

Dandenong will play host to a pilot netball program - Rock Up Netball - throughout December and January. Picture: GRANT TREEBY
Rock up for the netball NETBALL Victoria has delivered a series of Rock Up Netball (RUN) pilot sessions in Dandenong to encourage female participation by offering a new way to play. Developed in conjunction with VicHealth, RUN is a program tailored to the different fitness and skill levels of women aged 15 years and over. The program is a flexible ‘pay as you play’ alternative to organised physical activity. Launched on Friday 10 August, there have been 15 pilot sessions in both metropolitan and regional Victoria, with more than 150 women rocking up and joining in. The RUN program will be held at Dandenong Netball Stadium at Greaves Reserve on five Mondays starting on 7 December. Netball Victoria Participation Development Manager Scarlett O’Sullivan is pleased with the progress being made and hopes women will spread the word to join in and get social with netball in their community. “Netball Victoria is excited to bring this new initiative to life with the support of VicHealth,” O’Sullivan said. “We understand there are a lot of people in the community who are wanting to play sport in a social, relaxed environment and we believe that Rock Up Netball will help meet their needs.” A VicHealth report published in October 2014 showed that more than two-thirds of adult Australian females were classified as being sedentary or having low levels of exercise. To facilitate the barriers that stop women from participating in physical activity, RUN offers non-traditional netball activities and ensures a safe and inclusive environment where women can get together with friends and exercise at a pace that suits them. In the same VicHealth report, evidence showed that four times as many Victorian women (44 per cent) were choosing to participate in non-organised physical activity compared to organised physical activity (9 per cent). ROCK UP NETBALL DATES: Monday 7 December, 14 December, 21 December, 11 January, 18 January (6-7pm each night).
FOR Dandenong Stingrays ruckman Jayden Bubb, season’s end has also brought about the sudden conclusion to his football journey. After returning to the sport he played as a kid, the 204cm ruckman decided to hang up the boots after only one season of elite football as the lure of basketball was too tantalising to resist. After the TAC Cup season ended, Bubb was left to wonder where he wanted to take his sporting talents, with elite basketball proving the best fit for him as he has joined the Dandenong SEABL basketball team. “I think it was within the last week of football ... I wasn’t selected and I was in doubts whether I would continue playing footy,” Bubb said. “Obviously, there were better players than me in the position at the time, so there’s nothing held against Dandenong for that. “Basketball has always been my first sport and I still think it’s the greatest game to ever be made, so I sat down with (Dandenong SEABL coach) Darren Perry and spoke to him about it, got everything off my chest. “He said he was happy to have me down ... and in the men’s team.” Bubb had questioned the decision to stick with his football earlier in the season and get back to basketball even quicker, but he knew completing season was the right thing to do. From sticking with it, Bubb earned the opportunity to leave the football world with plenty of proud memories including his VFL debut for Frankston against Geelong alongside nine appearances for Dandenong. “When I was going through the rough patch, thinking about it part way through the year, Dad just said that I’ve never been known as a quitter and neither is your family, so just push through
Bubb ends his football journey on nine TAC Cup appearances with Dandenong and four in the VFL for Frankston. 140440 it and give it a red hot crack,” Bubb said. “I didn’t finish the season half-way through it and be one of those quitters, so I put that in my stride and finished off the season, so I could see what happened from there.” While he missed a significant year in his basketball development, which could have potentially involved Victorian and Australian representative duties, Bubb doesn’t look back and wonder what if, as it’s just not in his nature. “No regrets - life is too short for regrets,” Bubb said. “It was a great accomplishment and I was really thankful with what Dandenong and Frankston did - I learned a lot and made some really good
mates - Mitch Cox, Jake Lovett - and a lot of boys I’ll catch up with in the future so it was good. “The coaches were awesome down there - especially Nick Cox who wouldn’t shut up and Brandon White; he didn’t want to shut up either.” He’ll pick up where he left off in basketball as he hopes to adapt some of that footy physicality for the court. “Will take back some physically 100 per cent,” Bubb said. “I think in the first couple of weeks of training I wasn’t tucking in the elbows and played a game last night and was teched out for rough conduct, so I’m still trying to adjust back to basketball rules.”
Ready to get stuck into pre-season with Dandenong Rangers, Bubb hopes to prove a potent tall weapon for Perry alongside Dandenong mainstay Daequon Montreal (DQ), who Bubb holds in the highest esteem. “Just being back on the court would be really good, especially under DP who is a really good coach,” Bubb said. “Especially since I’ve been mentored by him since I was in 16s and 18s - he’d pull me aside and tell me to do this and that which improved my game a lot. “Also to get to play with DQ, playing the four-five, I’d love for him to take me under his wing and show me a few pointers and really help my game out heaps.”
Tarnished track has turned into a true treat By JARROD POTTER FROM bedlam to beauty in the space of a generation, local trainers and former jockeys Pat Hyland and Lenny Marshall have marvelled at the growth of Sandown Racecourse over the past 50 years. With vivid memories of the inaugural race meet at Sandown Racecourse - now William Hill Park - Hyland and Marshall couldn’t believe how many were cheering the horses past the post. The crowds flocked to Sandown for a chance to see the state’s stars take to the new American-style racecourse on 19 June 1965 - with 52,000 people in attendance. As he started in the saddle as a spry 14-year-old apprenticing for Jim Moloney, Hyland, now 74, has seen many champions come through the south east en route to Sandown. While track-legend Samson took the inaugural Sandown Park Stakes, it wasn’t much of an outing for Hyland who didn’t pick up a winner there for half-a-year after it opened. “It was a bit of a bun fight,” Hyland said. “There were a heap of people there, it was amazing, it was a big day, a great day as well. “I didn’t have much luck - it took me a long while to win a race at Sandown, but it was a great track, even in the initial stages of it.
“It stood up really well to racing and was a great camber and great track to ride on - I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t win a race on it for so long, but we got going after a while.” Hyland would eventually get his just glory at Sandown though as he won the Sandown Guineas on Birthday Card in 1967 and once more aboard Opposition in 1976. Marshall also thought the first meeting was amazing - both for the massive crowd and how he was never far from a win there, even if you were stuck in the pack early. “Bedlam... it was a massive day, Marshall said. “Big crowd, great racing and beautiful track. “In my opinion I always thought it was the best track to ride on - beautiful win from anywhere, come from behind, sit four deep and still win. “Beautiful track to ride on.” Brothers-in-law Hyland and Marshall will head to the yard to watch the 1600 metre Sandown Guineas as the Pyingerra Park tandem watch Craig Hewitt guide three-year-old stable hope Gredington. “If he runs up to his Mooney Valley run then he’ll win, if he runs up to his run at Flemington he’ll run last,” Hyland said. “We took the blinkers off him at Flemington - Blake Shin? Rode him at
Pat Hyland with his latest hopeful Gredington who will run in the Sandown Guineas at Sandown's 50th birthday on Saturday. 146854 Picture: JARROD POTTER Mooney Valley and he suggested we take the blinkers off as he pulled a bit. “We took them off and was probably the wrong thing, so we’ve put them back on him and he’s got a pretty aggressive jockey on Saturday (Newitt), so he’s a horse that takes a bit of riding and I think he’ll run super ’cause his work has
been really good.” Sandown Racecourse will celebrate its 50th birthday on Saturday at the Spring Carnival Race Day - starting at 1pm with the Santa’s Magical Kingdom Stakes before the headline races the Zipping Classic at 3.25pm and the Sandown Guineas at 4.40pm.

Rare century for Dandy quick By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 7 REVIEW (Day 1) UNABLE to command a powerful position in a club legend’s 100th first grade clash, Dandenong had the screws tightened by the inexperienced, but gutsy, Carlton (8/339) line-up. Dandenong mainstay Justin Butterfield (2/56) steamed in for his 100th Victorian Premier Cricket match in the Dandenong uniform and had to work hard for his wickets on a difficult day in the field. Dandenong coach Ross Woodall said Butterfield’s perennial efforts throughout the years though - sticking by the Panthers through lean years after the club’s premiership success in 2010/11 - was a testament to his character. “He’s the heart and soul of the place and it’s really important for us to perform well in his 100th,” Woodall said. “He’s done a hell of a lot for the club and the blokes out here today, so it’s about time we repay the favour.” With 168 first grade wickets at an average of 22 since joining the club in 2006/07- including 17 already this season - he’s been a force throughout the competition and Woodall was pleased to see his best on show early in the season. “Ten seasons and he is pushing lifemembership now,” Woodall said. “The good thing about it is he’s got his swing back this year. “He’s already taken 17 wickets, so that’s added to an already imposing
tally - they’re proper figures and we’re very pleased for him.” James Nanopoulos (4/83) powered through 22 overs as his efforts were rewarded early to knock over both Carlton openers. Butterfield returned fire to reduce the visitors to four-for, but no matter what Dandenong threw at them, Carlton was able to slip the net after falling to 5/162. The tail wagged furiously to keep the visitors at the crease all day as the sun started to take its toll on the Panthers. Tim Buszard (53) combined with Jayden Borg (48) and Cameron Stevenson (45no) at the depths of the Carlton batting line-up, helping steer the side towards a whopping 339 by stumps, leaving a lot of work to do next weekend if Dandenong wants to get the points for Butterfield in his milestone match. In Women’s Premier League, Dandenong (104) was unable to hold off Essendon-Maribyrnong Park (177). Sarah Elliott (6/19) - who will captain the Melbourne Renegades Women’s Big Bash League team - was sensational with the ball, picking up her first five wicket haul and career best figures to boot. But her efforts couldn’t displace Molly Strano (74) who guided the EMP attack. Elliott (31) was the best of a lacklustre Lions’ batting performance as the side slipped away after her dismissal at 3/57. Erica Kershaw (23) was the next best scorer. The third ranked Lions host Prahran in a Twenty20 match on Saturday.

Magpies make most of early slip Mark of a champion By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 4 REVIEW (DAY 1) SLIPPING the noose after some early headaches, Springvale South (206) powered on to register a double-century mountain for Narre Warren (1/9) to climb. SPRINGVALE SOUTH v NARRE WARREN The Magpies surged early to leave the hosts in a world of hurt at 3/54 after losing former Test cricketer Michael Vandort (18). Pushing himself up the order when the chips were down, captain Craig Slocombe (53) combined with Dylan Quirk (36) to see off the worst of Narre spearhead Kaushayla Weeraratne (4/56). Their 56-run stand changed the dynamic and allowed Quirk to get the run-rate going with Jackson Sketcher (22) and Jarryd Armitage (39). Quirk’s gutsy knock was brought to an end by Narre’s Sri Lankan spinner Janaka Liyanabadalge (2/81) in his DDCA debut. Armitage (1/4) had one last trick up his sleeve, dismissing Magpies opener Wendall Perumal (4) late in the day to give the Bloods the upper hand. MORDIALLOC v NORTH DANDENONG Mordialloc (155) was kept to a very uncustomary middling total after some superb work from North Dandenong (6/35) ... at least with the ball. Michael de Kauwe (5/62) and Musa Amin (2/33) set about carving up the Bloodhounds, but found resistance in strange places. Damith Ralalage (45) anchored the innings along with number 10 Jakob Woinarski (24 not out) to rescue the flagging Mordialloc effort after falling to 8/89. The Northerners could not inflict the killshot as Ralalage pushed the tally along before his time came to an end via Amin. North Dandenong’s batting effort was in stark contrast to its bowling, falling to a ruthless Chathura Athukorala (3/9) spell late in the day. Zafar Sheikh (9 not out) was left to watch on as the
Dylan Quirk glued himself to the crease to ensure Springvale South had a Picture: JARROD POTTER solid score to defend next week. 146962 innings crumbled around him, with the visitors left to pick up the pieces with 120 runs left to get on the second day with a measly four tail-end wickets in the shed. BUCKLEY RIDGES v PARKFIELD Parkfield (61 and 3/40) was punished badly by an up-tempo Buckley Ridges (5/191dec) hell-bent on leaping back into the Turf 1 top-four. Dan Watson didn’t even need to bowl himself as his Ridges’ attack was too potent for the visitors anyway; Su-
santha Pradeep (5/24) and Hussain Ali (3/19) brutalised the Bears in only 32 overs. From there Buckley went the smack about at the postage stamp known as Park Oval, with Pradeep (68) all but guaranteeing himself three votes with a sensational hitting effort alongside Watson (43) and Cal O’Hare (37 not out). The declaration came after 34 overs of Parkfield fielding misery at nearly a run-a-ball. Kunal Kapoor (2/12) snared two at-the-death scalps to leave Parkfield 90 short of an outright innings defeat.
FERNANDO Bale looks set to cap his remarkable career with victory in the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park on Friday night. Despite drawing the unfavourable box six, Fernando Bale’s exceptional early speed will see him head into Friday night’s classic at a short quote. In what is shaping as his final campaign, Fernando Bale was sent to the boxes the $1.10 favourite in his heat last Friday - the 22nd consecutive race he’s started at an odds on quote - and his customary explosive early speed allowed him to open a three-length lead on the field passing the post for the first time. He extended that margin with every stride down the back straight before stopping the clock at 29.06 seconds to record a stunning 7.5 length victory. The win was the 25th in his last 27 starts and 33rd overall, and will be aiming to maintain his perfect group race record when he takes his place in Friday night’s $600,000 group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup final. “He’s a champion, that’s all I can say,” said his emotional trainer Andrea Dailly. “I wasn’t nervous going to the boxes, but once I put him in the box I thought ‘geez I hope he wins’. There’s been a lot of hype about him retiring after the
Cup and I really wanted to see him compete in the big race because he deserves to, he’s a champion.” A win in next week’s final would be his 12th group race victory - the 9th at group 1 level - and take the white and brindle superstar’s prize money to $1,588,110. “A lot of people have come to the track to see him - it’s a really nice feeling knowing how many people enjoy watching him race. “Because we’re with him every day it’s easy to take him for granted, but when you see a crowd like tonight it reminds you just how special he is.” Despite dominating his heat, Fernando Bale cannot afford a misstep in the final, with an outstanding field assembled to challenge him in the world’s richest greyhound race. Leading the charge is kennelmate and fastest TAB Melbourne Cup heat winner Dyna Double One. The TAB Melbourne Cup is the eighth group 1 Dyna Double One has qualified for, but despite being placed in five of them, he is yet to break through at the highest level. Come On Fantasy, Kilkee Flex and Ryno’s Raider also recorded heat wins, and will be joined in the final by Kraken Flash, Bourbski Flyer, Lady Toy and Lithgow Panther.

West belongs to Wildcats PERTH continued to be a horror hunting ground for Dandenong this year, downed for the second time in a month as the Wildcats knocked over the Rangers 83-66. Dandenong fell behind early and could not catch up as Perth dominated the third term in particular as former Dandenong junior Carley Mijovic (21 points) shone off the bench. The Rangers were well led by Jacinta Kennedy (12 points) while Sara Blicavs (11 points, 11 rebounds) added a double double to her season’s tally. Dandenong is on the road again this weekend ... but at least it’s not by plane as the Rangers battle Bendigo away on Sunday afternoon.

McDonald’s best shot SPRING FEVER WITH
ROY ASPINALL STAR jockey James McDonald, secured two of the three Spring Premierships when he outrode his opposition to win Saturday’s 128th running of the $351,000 Group 2 weight-for-age Quayclean Zipping Classic (2400 metres) on Who Shot Thebarman at the William Hill Park, Sandown Hillside track. The Spring Premierships concluded on Saturday. The categories were Premier Jockey and Premier Trainer, plus Premier Young Gun Jockey (riders under 26 on 31 December 2015). The first two categories carry a $25,000 prize. In addition, a $25,000 donation for their chosen charity partner. The third will be awarded $5000, with a $5000 donation to the nominated charity. In securing both jockey’s titles, McDonald settled Who Shot Thebarman at the tail of the seven horse field but at the 1000 metres he took off around the field and went to the lead. As they straightened for home he dashed away for the easiest of wins. Who Shot Thebarman won by seven lengths from Tall Ship with two and half lengths to Do You Remember third. It was another big win for Sydney’s leading trainer, Chris Waller, who this spring has won the BECK Caulfield Guineas with Press Statement and Cox Plate with Winx. An
Who Shot The Barman flashes a big smile after picking up the Picture: JARROD POTTER Zipping Classic. 146961 Auckland Cup winner, Who Shot Thebarman was one of those badly interfered with in the Melbourne Cup. He also collected a $100,000 bonus offered by the Melbourne Racing Club, on top of his $180,000 first prize, having also run in the BMW Caulfield Cup, in which he
ran a good seventh. “It was a great ride by James he summed it up well because he knew we couldn’t outsprint Rising Romance and we had to get rolling,” Justine Hales said, Waller’s Melbourne representative. “James just got him into a
rhythm, he got to the front so easily and once he got there, it was not really a worry because he won the Auckland Cup from the lead.” Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir secured the trainer’s premiership when he won the $251,000 Group 2 William Hill Sandown Guineas (1600 metres) with Mahuta. The three-year-old made it four straight wins since Weir put blinkers on. He won a Kyneton Maiden, a Caulfield Listed race a Flemington Group 3 and now a Group 2. Jockey Brad Rawiller had him well placed throughout and he dashed to the lead at the 200 metres and raced clear. Mahuta won by a length and a quarter from Dal Cielo with a length to Don’t Doubt Mamma third. James McDonald, whose charity partner was Variety, secured 81.5 points to win both premierships for jockeys and Darren Weir recorded 83.5 points. His charity partner is Down Syndrome Victoria. Michelle Payne’s brother, Stevie, works for Weir and has Down syndrome. Another looking ahead was David Hayes, who in partnership with Tom Dabernig, trains Almoonqith, an impressive winner of the $150,500 Listed William Hill Sandown Cup (3200 metres). He won by a length from The Offer with two lengths to Grand Marshall third. All three placegetter were unlucky in the Melbourne Cup. The Hall of Fame trainer says Almoonqith will go for a spell now and is likely to run first-up in the Australian Cup before heading across the border.
