Generous soul By JESSE GRAHAM IN the last week, Healesville’s Peter Low has been remembered as a wickedly funny dad, a keen chef and an expert in his field, with tributes from friends and family coming in their hundreds. But most of all, Peter has been remembered as a generous and kindhearted man who helped whoever he could. On Monday 9 November, Peter Low was killed in an industrial accident, when an explosive detonated at a housing development site in Harkaway. He was 64 years old, a husband to Jenny Low for more than 40 years and a father to Rien, 37, and Brooke, 35. Rien told the Mail that Peter was an expert explosives technician, who started his blasting company, Ribro Blasting (named after his children), in 1984, before moving to Healesville in 1986. “There’s only a couple of people in Victoria who do what he did, and he was extremely well-respected within the industry,” he said. Rien said that his father had trained him as an explosives technician, and that though he had career changes since, his dad always made sure he had a fall-back if things got tough. “I’ve been very lucky that dad has always had a job for me,” he said. “It wouldn’t matter what I wanted, wouldn’t matter what my sister wanted to do - if I came home and said ‘I want to be a dolphin trainer’, whatever it was ... whatever you wanted to do, he’d support you. “He made things easy, he was extremely understanding.” That support was a common theme running through Peter’s life in the community, and his interactions with others - Rien said his father did all he could to help others. “At any one time, when we grew up, there’d be someone staying in the house, whether it was someone disadvantaged, or on a bit of a rough road in life, or someone just genuinely needing help - absolutely anything, he just took them in, no questions asked,” he said.

Family and friends have been left shattered following the death of Peter Low. Pictured is Peter (second from right) with Rien, Brooke and Jenny. Picture: CONTRIBUTED A keen sportsman, Peter sponsored local footballers and was involved in the Healesville Swimming Club, as well as assisting families in Healesville financially. A keen cook who loved making pies and pasties, which he branded as “Pete’s perfect pies and pasties”, he used what he could to help others, including in the aftermath of the Black Saturday bushfires. “In 2009, obviously we weren’t as affected as other people, and a lot of our close friends had been affected, so Dad just got in the kitchen and baked,

and baked, and baked, and baked, and made so many pies and pasties,” Rien said. “We drove them out to people we knew, just to make sure that, if they had a fridge, there was something.” Though, like many cooks, Peter wasn’t keen on cleaning up his work, Rien said it was a “small price to pay” to experience his food. For his family, Peter put in the extra mile - such as with a camping trip at Big River, where Peter travelled there the night before to set up a “minitown”, with kitchen tents, sleeping

tents, and even a bath that he dug into the ground. In the week following Peter’s death, friends, family and community members have expressed their grief about unexpectedly losing such a treasured person. One Facebook post about the incident remembered a “grin more genuine than any I’d seen before”. “The world is a darker place without your generosity, your kindness and your spirit,” the post read. That outpouring of grief has also come in the form of support for the

family, with “hundreds” of people making contact in the wake of Peter’s death. “The outpouring of support has been overwhelming,” Rien said. “Like hundreds of calls, and messages, texts - our house is filled with beautiful flowers. “It still doesn’t seem real - it’s only been a week today.” WorkSafe and the Coroner are investigating the circumstances of the accident, and the Low family expect to farewell Peter in a ceremony in the coming week.

Mayor for third time

Briefly Fraud charges laid A WOMAN will face court next month for fraud, after a Yarra Glen burglary led to a police raid in the northern suburbs last week. On Friday 13 November, Yarra Ranges police officers executed a search warrant in Mernda, arresting a 34-year-old woman. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow sad the raid followed a burglary in Yarra Glen on 19 August. The woman was charged with multiple counts of fraud and bailed to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on 16 December.

By JESSE GRAHAM MURRINDINDI’S mayor has been re-elected unanimously, with Margaret Rae beginning her third consecutive year as mayor. On Wednesday 28 October, Cr Rae was re-elected as mayor unanimously by her peers, with councillor John Kennedy re-elected as deputy mayor. Cr Rae said she was “very appreciative of the confidence the council has placed in me”, in taking the mayor’s chair for another year - her third year as mayor in her four years on council. She said one of the biggest issues facing the council in the coming year would be the budget strategy, in the face of the coming rate-cap for all councils. “We have been working very hard for the last couple of years to define our budget strategy going forward, and we have a good concept and a good strategic resource plan in place,” Cr Rae said. “It clearly doesn’t fit with the rate-capping model coming in.” Cr Rae said the council was still unclear about what form the cap would take - whether the cap would be different for all council, for example - but said it would avoid cutting services where possible. “What we don’t want to have to do is cut services to our community, and that is something we’ll be trying to avoid,” she said. As for her coming year in the mayor’s chair, Cr Rae said her focus was on “continued improvement”, as well as exploring sharing services with other councils. “And stability is the answer,” she said. “I think if you can have clear, accountable messages and you stay true to your community ... I think the community feels much more confident with what’s going on, even if it takes a little longer than we all might hope. “We have a shared vision of maintaining and increasing the understanding of the community, and the level of trust, I think, it’s improved enormously.” Cr Rae said the best part of the top job was getting to meet more community members, though a pitfall was the “sheer volume of work” that comes with it. “A lot of the reward and enjoyment comes in many ways, through the interaction with the community, and it’s often the really small things, because that adds value, I think, to the whole of the community - everything from being involved in local celebrations, to having a cup of tea with local groups, such as our CWA,” she said. When asked whether she will run for re-election in council next year, Cr Rae said she had yet to make up her mind. “I’ll get through the next few months, and then I’ll think about it,” she said.

Subway safe stolen POLICE are searching for witnesses after a safe was stolen from a Seville restaurant earlier this month, setting off an alarm in the process. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that, at 11.56pm on Sunday 8 November, unknown persons jemmied open a back door at Seville’s Subway restaurant on the Warburton Highway. The burglars set off a monitored alarm when they entered, but stole a safe, which contained about $2000, and exited through the back door. Det Sgt Barrow said that anyone who might have seen suspicious behaviour, or vehicles parked around the restaurant at the time, should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Help locate service badge plea: Digger By JESSE GRAHAM A FORMER Healesville soldier is calling for help to find a 50-year-old service badge, lost at last week’s Remembrance Day ceremony. On Wednesday 11 November, Edwin (Ken) Williams attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at Healesville RSL, with about 100 community members. When he returned home after the

event, Mr Williams noticed that his Returned from Active Service badge had come off of his jacket and was missing. Mr Williams told the Mail that the badge was roughly an inch in size, diamond shaped and bronze in colour, with a crown, anchor and wings emblazoned on the front. The front of the badge reads, “Returned from Active Service”, while the reverse of the badge has his name, Edwin Williams, and an individual badge

number of AF 12458. He said the badge had been given as recognition of his work in Vietnam, and was awarded to him in the mid-60s. “It’s just an important item in my service career,” he said. Mr Williams said the RSL staff had helped him search the grounds and his car for the missing badge to no avail. He said it could have become lodged in a tyre, or ended up in the grass.

On Thursday 12 November, Mr Williams reported the badge missing with Healesville Police. Though Returned from Active Service badges are still given out to defence members, the design has changed since Mr Williams received his. Anyone who may have spotted the medal or who has any information is asked to call Healesville Police on 5962 4422.

POLICE are calling for information after two men were allegedly seen trying to force their way into a Chirnside Park property earlier this month. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that between 1.45pm and 1.50pm on Sunday 8 November, two men were allegedly seen trying to force open a rear door at a property in Meadow Fair Way in Chirnside Park. Det Sgt Barrow said that when a resident confronted the men, they ran, and no vehicles were heard nearby. The men were described as possibly aged in their twenties, of Islander appearance, with a large build. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Sleep is nature’s fixer SLEEP is the most important natural healer that humans possess. Think of it like a super supplement. Getting into deep sleep (also called REM sleep or the fourth stage of sleep) is a priority that our systems require in order to maintain optimal health of our musculoskeletal system, immune system and even our psychological state. Parents of young children and those who suffer from pain syndromes will attest to this, but it is also a common complaint of people with arthritis, sporting injuries and neck or back pain. In conditions such as fibromyalgia for instance, the body never

Now most elite sporting agencies measure fatigue levels of their athletes via physical tests or subjective questionnaires daily during training periods in order to predict risk of injury. It is common for AFL players to regularly have a lighter ‘day on the track’ when their fatigue levels are up just from these questionnaires, because we know that muscles do not perform and do not recover optimally when we are generally fatigued. Extra mile for the heart By JESSE GRAHAM A GROUP of cyclists made their way into Healesville last week, finishing off the second-last leg of a 1200 kilometre ride from Canberra to Melbourne. Twenty-nine riders stopped on Friday 13 November in Healesville’s Queens Park for a lunch break after a gruelling ride from Marysville to Warburton and across the valley. The visit to the valley is one of the final stops in the journey after the riders set out from Canberra on Saturday 7 November, as part of national charity Paceline’s annual ride. The ride aims to raise money for the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Sydney, and raise awareness of atrial fibrillation and other kinds of heart

arrhythmias. Professional mountain bike rider Paul van der Ploeg took part in the ride, and said the group was hit by a hailstorm in Marysville on the Thursday. “It’s been pretty wild,” he said. “Everyday has been a different challenge, whether it be hot or hailstorms, or really windy, so it’s got a bit of everything. “From Marysville, we climbed a pretty brutal ascent towards Lake Mountain ... and the whole road was covered in leaf litter from the furious storm we got hit by yesterday.” Mr van der Ploeg said the group would make their way to Yarra Glen for a rest stop, before Saturday’s 80 kilometre ride through the Dandenong Ranges, into Beaumaris, and then into Melbourne to finish. Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe met

the group in the park, and said people often made the mistake of assuming heart problems were a condition for older people. “This is not the case - people in their mid-thirties can just as easily be struck down,” she said. Paceline president Steve Quinn was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation at the age of 35 - now 47, he led the ride into Healesville. Mr Quinn said those who had undiagnosed heart arrhythmias may experience mild palpitations, and urged anyone worried to speak up and ask a doctor. “You feel the palpitations - initially, it comes and goes, and the frequency increases,” he said. “Ultimately, you’ll go into heart failure. “If they’ve got a palpitation, they should tell their doctor.”

HEALESVILLE Action Group (HAG) made a final bid to convince the Victorian Electoral Commission that Yarra Ranges Council should be made up of three, threecouncillor wards. HAG spokesperson John Anwin spoke to the group’s submission at the Victorian Electoral Commission panel hearing tasked with overseeing the 2015 Yarra Ranges Shire Council Electoral Representation Review (ERV). The panel, headed by Deputy Electoral Commissioner Liz Williams, presented the three options previously on the table throughout the ERV process, with an 11thhour option “D” put forward at the 5 November meeting by Yarra Ranges Council. The VEC’s preference for Option A would see the continuation of nine single councillor wards with modification to some ward boundaries. Option B is for nine councillors from three three-councillor wards and Option C was for nine councillors elected from one four-councillor ward, one three councillor ward and one two councillor ward. In their submission on the night, Yarra Ranges Council supported Option A but put forward Option D which, they said, incorporated ward boundary adjustments which were more representative and gave more consideration to the strong communities of interest that exist in the shire, with the exception of Mount Evelyn. There were assurances, however, on the night from Ms Williams that should Option D become a viable option, it would need an addendum report and would, in fact, require the consultation process to

start over. She indicated that this would be an exceptional outcome, and unlikely to happen. Mr Anwin stuck with the group’s preliminary submission, saying they believed in the 3x3 Option B, adding that they noted that the VEC summary supported their viewpoint that it was more cohesive and less dividing of communities than the VEC’s, and Yarra Ranges Council’s preference for Option A. In regard to Option A, Mr Anwin said it was important that councillors looked at the overall picture in terms of the entire shire as the rate pool was derived from and needed to be spread across the entire shire. In relation to communities of interest, he said Option B largely eliminated concerns about the divisiveness what arose when communities were split. HAG rejected Option C, saying with differing numbers of councillors representing the individual wards the same disadvantage that exists in Option A is exacerbated. Mr Anwin said the additional cost to ratepayers of additional councillors could not be justified. Yarra Ranges councillors and council spokesperson, manager Corporate Affairs, Jennifer Bednar, argued that single councillors were better able to represent their specific wards and emphasised that ratepayers can go to any and all councillors to seek advice and representation at council. The final VEC report is scheduled to be published on Wednesday 25 November on vec.vic.gov.au or calling 131 832 and will be available for inspection at Yarra Ranges Council offices.

Shake Up at Powelltown A BIG shake-up at the annual meeting of the Powelltown Football Club on 7 November resulted in an entirely new set of office-bearers being elected. No controversy surrounded the change in office, but all the men in official positions in the 1965 season have either been replaced or moved to another sphere for the coming season. President is Rob Adams, treasurer Ron Mary, secretary Ian Burns, vice-president Ray Bennett. TO SAY it’s been a topsy-turvy few weeks when it comes to the weather in the Yarra Valley is an understatement. The region has been hot, cold, miserable, beautiful, rainy and everything in between. Letters Valley respects cyclists I’D LIKE to thank drivers in our area for being so courteous and careful with cyclists on the road. It’s not the same in the city, where unprovoked abuse is hurled from windows and trucks seem purposely to squeeze cyclists into the gutters. They don’t seem to realise how vulnerable a cyclist is without the protection of a cabin and airbag. Cycling is still safe compared to driving, but cycling fatalities are rising and are now almost three per cent of all traffic fatalities in Victoria. There seems to be a culture of ignorance and aggression in the city, which is lacking here. It’s not as if being 30 seconds later at their destination will make that much difference. Here in the Yarra Valley, I think I’ve only heard such abuse once and that was from youngsters who probably knew no better. I guess we have retained the old country culture of courtesy on the roads where occasionally you will see drivers raising a

More checks needed AS SOMEONE who has worked in local government for over 25 years, I find it amazing the Yarra Ranges Shire councillors can exempt themselves from the normal sensible checks and balances of financial governing. This move sounds more like some state in Mexico. Yes, women are entitled to financial assistance if they need it, but there should be financial checks as to the total income of a councillor’s family, similar to the age pension. A limit of $10,000 must be included to ensure that all councillors play by the same rules or we could give each councillor a credit card to do what they want, like some union officials. Relay moves By JESSE GRAHAM THE Yarra Ranges Relay for Life may return to the Dandenong Ranges next year, in an effort to draw teams from the valley and the hills for the annual fund-raiser. About 20 teams walked around the oval at Healesville’s Don Road Sporting Complex from 3pm on Saturday 7 November, through until 9am the next day. Event chairperson Prue Northey said the 20 teams, with about 150 relayers, raised $22,500 at the event for the Cancer Council, including donations and sponsorships from residents and businesses. Ms Northey noted a “smaller” attendance at the event than in previous years, with the event shifting to Kalorama in 2014 and back to Healesville

for this year’s event. “We’re kind of in the rebuild stage of it,” she said. “It just means that fewer teams are coming and we have to find creative new promotional ways and creative ways to get the team numbers back up. “Everyone there seemed to have a really, really good time they were really into the cause, they were really enthusiastic about it.” Community members, carers, cancer survivors and their loved ones all took part in the relay, while musicians including Eden Lee and Dylan Raath Music performed on stage. The event has traditionally been a space where people can gather and remember loved ones, while also raising money towards cancer research through the Cancer Council.

Ms Northey said “98 per cent” of the people she spoke to at the event said they would come back the next year, and that next year’s event would likely be held in Kalorama. “I really loved Kalorama, loved how intimate the event was,” she said. “Kalorama just has something about it - it’s smaller, more intimate, the teams can socialise.” In the weeks following the event, donations can still be made towards the total, and teams will consolidate and donate their raised funds. Ms Northey said she hoped to raise more than $25,000 as the final sum. Residents can donate by visiting relayforlife.org.au and searching for the Yarra Ranges event.

The war was just beginning “the lucky ones”, and that Remembrance Day served as an occasion to pay tribute to those who suffered fighting for their country. “And today, as on many days, I pause to remember their incredible contribution and the terrible legacy of war,” she said. At 11am, everyone at the services also paused to remember the contributions and the sacrifices made by those who came before, and those currently serving the country abroad. UPPER Yarra RSL welfare officer, Dennis Reeves, painted a vivid picture on Remembrance Day of what Australian troops experienced as they endured the second year of WWI. Speaking to a small gathering, compared to the Anzac Day crowds, he invited the diverse group at the Yarra Junction Cenotaph to take a trip back in time to 1915 where he said over 8000 ANZACs died. “Unknown to us in 1915, the war will continue for another three long years with the name ANZAC becoming both feared and respected among the nations of the world as they battled their way across Europe and north to Jerusalem,” he said. Mr Reeves said the First Armistice Day was held in 1919 with two minutes’ silence observed in London and Australia. At the end of World War II, in 1945, the name of the observance was changed to Remembrance Day as a commemoration of all war dead past and present. “Today we remember their sacrifice and to those who survived and returned home battered and worn, but still built our towns such as Yarra Junction as we know it today,” he said. In Healesville, Ryrie Ward

councillor Fiona McAllister then made a moving speech to the crowd, to illustrate some of the devastation families back home felt during the “War to End All Wars”. “As many, if not all of them headed off to war, we can only imagine what it felt like in the weeks and months and often years that followed, waiting for news ... in those days before the internet, mobile phones and even just waiting for letters to reach you, while you waited and worried,” she said. Cr McAllister said those left behind during the wars were

IT WAS hard to miss the Healesville Music Festival, which filled the town’s venues and main street with bands, musicians and events over the weekend. The sixth annual festival was held from Friday 13 November through until Sunday afternoon, with businesses and venues in towns hosting a line-up of musicians from home and abroad. While the Memo, the Terminus Hotel and the RSL hosted paid, ticketed events, anyone passing through the town would have received a taste of the festival, with bands performing in the streets and cafes. Organising committee members David Johnston and Michael de Oleveira hailed the event as a success, with a strong attendance right across the board. Mr Johnston said the Soulsville performance at Healesville Uniting Church

on Sunday morning saw about 280 people cram into the church and an overflow room. Between an opening night event at the Memo, a bush dance the following night, and packed rooms at the RSL and the Terminus, along with other festival venues, both Mr Johnston and Mr de Oleveria said next year’s event will build on this year’s successes. Mr Johnston pointed out Healesville musician, Ben Mitchell, who “took the bull by the horns when equipment blew during his set, only for him to perform acoustically with his bandmates. Mr de Oleveria said the organising committee would have a couple of months of rest and relaxation before starting their planning for the 2016 festival in February. By KATH GANNAWAY AN UPDATED VicEmergency website will provide a one-stop shop for emergency warnings and information this summer. While that’s good news for Yarra Ranges on the whole, the Warburton Emergency Planning Group is continuing its campaign to ensure residents, and visitors to the Upper Yarra district have access to the same digital emergency communication as other areas. Funding was announced in June this year for a mobile phone base station for East Warburton, with the Reefton area identified as a contender for the $60 million second round funding. WEPG is also pushing for a repeater station on Mount Victoria to improve ABC radio reception in the Warburton area. WEPG spokesman, Kevin Bargar, told the Mail a technical brief was being put together over the next week or so to evaluate what was required.

Who is Your New Dentist? I am Monica O’Malley, I’ve been part of the dental industry for the last 24 years and I am proud to announce the opening of my new Dental Practice. “Your New Dentist” is a family friendly dental practice committed to personalised care and a positive dental experiences for all ages. I am a dentist with decades of experience, a passion for helping others and an innovative modern vision of what a visit the dentist is all about. I’ve assembled a fantastic team to help deliver a great service. We are committed to challenging negative stereotypes and help our patients discover the freedom and confidence of great oral health as part of healthy lifestyle

Who on earth would want to be a dentist? I hear this question a lot. The answer for me is that I actually became a dentist by happy accident. Born in 1972 in the western suburbs of Sydney, I began my career as a dental assistant in the early 1990s. I quickly found that I became completely engaged with helping and caring for others. In 1993 I graduated as a dental therapist, laying my initial groundwork as a practitioner in the Community Health services. In 1995 I became the first member of my family to enrol in university and 1998 I graduated from Sydney University with a Masters Degree in Health Science Education. In 1999 I went on to enrol in the Bachelor of Dentistry and graduated with Honours in 2003. I feel proud and privileged to be able to be to play a part in the health the of the local community. The question for me now is ...

“We’re pushing for this fire season, but it will depend on what needs to be done, and funding,” he said. Meanwhile, the new emergency.vic.gov.au has been updated with the CFA and SES incident and warning pages going directly to the VicEmergency website, providing better access to information before, during and after an emergency. Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said the focus of the website was to make it easier for the community, so they don’t have to access multiple websites in times of emergency. “Victorians largely live in a digital world and the VicEmergency website is an important tool for providing localised and relevant information to help people make good decisions about their own safety,” he said. The VicEmergency website brings together emergency information and warnings from agencies including CFA, MFB, SES and DELWP, providing

emergency incidents in real time, on a Google Maps display. Over the coming months, further features will be added to the site, including the ability for people to create Watch Zones, similar to the FireReady app. Mr Lapsley said the VicEmergency website was just one of the channels available and it was important that community members had more than one way to access emergency information so they had a fall back if power failed or there was no internet access. Victorians can also get information by tuning in to ABC local radio, or other emergency broadcasters including commercial and community radio stations or SKY TV, by downloading the FireReady App, phoning the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667 or following VicEmergency on Twitter and Facebook. Information from Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria is not currently included on the VicEmergency website.

Brigades bring it together By KATH GANNAWAY BRIGADES on either side of the Yarra Valley are inviting their communities to celebrate their partnerships. Yarra Glen CFA will say ‘thanks’ to Ritchies IGA and their local community with a display and information session at the Yarra Glen store on Saturday, 21 November from 9am to 1pm. Brigade members will be on deck to sizzle some sausages, organise activities for the kids and help with home and bushfire information. Yarra Glen CFA’s Louise Higgins said Ritchie’s IGA, the local community and businesses had been incredibly supportive of the CFA after the 2009 bushfires. She said the launch of the Community Benefit Card and the events of Black Saturday and the weeks following culminated in the community wanting to support the local brigade. “Through the Community Benefit Card a significant amount was donated towards a new truck,” she said. “Yarra Glen CFA are thankful for the support that Mark and his team provide - whether that be assisting us with the distribution of calendars, hosting us for our annual Father’s Day raffle, or

‘Why do I continue being a dentist?’ The answer to this is easy. I care about people and every day I am grateful to have been able to develop skills that allow me to engage with others and make a positive contribution to their health and wellbeing. I am committed to personal development through regular voluntary work and ongoing professional study. I am continually developing my skills as a practitioner to ensure my patients receive the best possible personalised care. I go to the dentist everyday, but let’s face it - going to the dentist is not at the top of everyone’s to-do list. It saddens me to think that most of us (me included) have at some stage had a less than ideal dental experience - I know this has had an impact on our confidence at the dentist. This of course comes at a price, when we avoid care that can at times leave us in pain or feeling embarrassed. Your New Dentist understands the importance of personalised and empathetic care.

assisting us with the supply of sausages for community barbecues." In Millgrove, the Wesburn-Millgrove CFA, supported by River Valley Church and Millgrove Residents’ Action Group, is holding a community open day on Sunday, 20 December between 10am and 2pm. The day will celebrate the opening of the new fire station and community refuge and to provide the community with an opportunity to look through the new facility. The theme is “Fire Station Celebration".

AS THE sun sets on Wandin on Friday, 27 November, Christmas festivities will be in full swing. The retailers of Wandin Shopping Centre and Community Groups are once more hosting the annual Wandin Sunset Festival. As always, they’re inviting local people of all ages to join in the fun and excitement. If previous years are anything to go by, there will be lots to see, do, eat and enjoy. So bring along your family and friends and have an amazingly fun time. More than 60 market stalls will provide a great opportunity for guests to support local groups and businesses, as they work their way through their Christmas gift list. To add to the entertainment, there will be local dance, martial arts and fitness demonstrations, which will be there to add to the great sense of community spirit and involvement. Also during the evening, the CFA will be demonstrating the Jaws of Life on a vehicle. There will be hot rods, chainsaw carving, raffles and fireworks. For the kids, there will be a petting zoo, jumping castles, face painters, balloons, bucking bull ride, craft activities, pony rides and, of course, the star of the show - Santa! The festival will run from 5pm to 9pm. Organisers hope to see all their local school families and families from in and around the Yarra Valley to be part of the community festival. The event is proudly organised by Wandin Traders and Community Groups and sponsored by the Yarra Ranges Council. There is plenty of time for guests near and far to get on board and support this event. Make sure to mark it in your diary and head along to a fantastic community evening out. For further information, see their Facebook page: wandinshoppingcentre.

Auction Sat 12th Dec @ 1.30pm

A Piece of History - Circa 1917 Everyone’s passed by this home & gazed with envy at the position & character it offers. A part of a bygone era the property offers and magniicent old garden on over 1 & 1/2 acres & is bounded by the Little Yarra River at the north & the Warburton Trail on the south; a remarkable position. The home has seen better days. Those days are evident upon inspection. The wide bull-nose verandas, high timber lined ceilings, large rooms and character & charm are everywhere you look. The opportunity exists for a buyer to renovate & restore the former glory or to rebuild anew (STCA). A leisurely walk of about 500 metres along the trail will see you arrive in the centre of Yarra Junction at the cafes, shops & sporting facilities. Come for a look, stay forever.

Horsepower! By KATH GANNAWAY HORSEPOWER meets horsepower at Mont De Lancey’s Draught Horse and Vintage Machinery Weekend on 21 and 22 November. The annual hark back to ‘yesteryear’, organised by the Yarra Valley Machinery Preservation Society in conjunction with Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead, features displays of working draught horses alongside the steam-driven horsepower of vintage machinery. Colin Jarvis and Ben, one of

the Yarra Valley’s most famous Clydesdales (he even has his own facebook page - Ben The Clydesdale) and Don Walker, president of the YVMPS, are passionate about horse-powered history and keeping the Yarra Valley’s pioneer heritage in the picture. The weekend has something for everyone with working displays of ploughing, hay baling and drag-sawing, machinery running up a great head of steam, blacksmiths firing up the forges to make horse shows, woodturners, working sheep-

dogs and creative chainsaw sculpture ... and more. At $10 for adults and children free, it’s an affordable family day out. Mr Walker said the entry fee was designed to attract families and added that they would like to see more young people attending to get a sense of heritage. The event runs from 10am to 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday at 71 Wellington Road, Wandin North. Phone 5964 2088.

An afternoon of laughs By JESSE GRAHAM AN AFTERNOON of laughs and performances will be held this weekend at Healesville High School, with Healesville U3A’s annual revue opening for a one-off show. The Healesville University of the Third Age (U3A) will hold its annual Revue at the high school’s performing arts theatre from 2pm on Saturday, 21 November. Committee member Val James says the revue, which will run until about 4pm, will feature 20 U3A members per-

forming different sketches and songs to visitors over the afternoon. “We’ve got music, we’ve got sketches, we’ve got funny things happening,” Ms James said. The performers are aged from their fifties to their eighties, and are “very active, of course”, according to Ms James. She said there would be monologues and sketches to crack the audience up. “It’ll be a good laugh, and, as you know, laughter is the best medicine,” she said.

Ms James said members had been practicing for the last six months, with a full dress-rehearsal last week, and that the event followed a revue at the Yarra Glen Memorial Hall last year. However, she said this year’s revue would be a step up, with air-conditioning, better seating and a professional sound set-up - and 246 seats for visitors. Tickets to the Healesville U3A’s revue are $5. The event will be held at Healesville High School’s Performing Arts Theatre on Camerons Road from 2pm.

Just give this one a miss Mistress America (MA15+) Starring: Greta Gerwig, Lola Kirke, Matthew Shear

Buy & Sell in the

Motoring section of Network Classifieds.

MISTRESS America is another regrettable miss from the Noah Baumbach-Greta Gerwig duo, after 2013’s disappointing Frances Ha. Withdrawn literary student Tracy (Lola Kirke) forms a strong whirlwind friendship with her free-spirited future step-sister Brooke (Greta Gerwig). First, the scant positives. The film’s soundtrack is full of bouncy electronic goodness, and Kirke is a joy to watch as Tracy, bringing an enthusiastic

cheer beyond her blase surfacelevel cynicism. This uneven comedy-drama manifests in three distinct stages. The first act is irritating, mainly due to Gerwig as Brooke. Brooke is an exceedingly vapid, hyperactive motormouth who seldom feels believable as a character. The second act is more engaging, featuring a clear goal of Brooke securing funding for her restaurant, though it’s still dragging an extraneous side-plot about jealousy. The climax will likely leave you dumbfounded, as Tracy’s short story (loosely inspired by Brooke) is mercilessly criti-

cised. Sure, it’s a compelling scene on its own, and illustrates the anxiety many authors have about their work getting rejected, but it’s so surreally, cruelly incongruous with the rest of the film; it feels like a fevered dream. Moreover, there’s no vindication for the unfairly attacked author, which is very unsatisfying. With a wonderful lead performance from Kirke bogged down by obnoxious characters, erratic pacing and an unnecessarily nightmarish conclusion, Mistress America is like a black hole of unco-ordinated hipsterism. - Seth Hynes

won by six shots in a tight game, 46-40. Rink scores: C. Kercher 24/15 and R. Newing 22/25. Warburton 4 (Division 8 Section 6) unfortunately had to forfeit. New players are wanted so come along to the club if you would like a game. The Tuesday pennant did not play again this week due to the Victorian Open. The Wednesday night triples bowls competition saw the Tail Enders win their first ever game since the competition started. Congratulations for never giving up. They won by one shot against the Whipper Snappers 14-13. Other results were: Pensioners 17 d Bolters 11; Domes 16 d Saint Dogs

Yarra Glen Bowls a first division winner FIRST division came home from Lilydale with a well-earned win, seeing Yarra Glen finish with three rinks up and 16 points for their efforts moving up the ranking to 6. This win has brought back a spring to the step in the club, which worked through many hard weeks at the start of the season. The second team wasn’t as successful going down to a strong Warburton side as did the third team, be-

Warburton golf results WEDNESDAY 11 November, stableford: Noel Hyndman, in a welcome return to form, won with 40 excellent points. Runner-up was Steuart Hawke, also scoring 40, but losing on a countback. The ball rundown ventured to 34 points. NTP: 3rd Kim Kennedy, 9th Des Ray, 17th David Murch. Twilight: Winner was Eric Slater, with 22 wellcompiled points (no other information available). Saturday 14 November, stroke and third round of the championships: In the daily comp, A Grade winner was Jon-Cross with an impressive nett 66, meaning he shot 70 ‘off the stick’ - the best gross score on the day. B Grade winner was Mike Dobson who scored a stunning nett 65, which vaulted him into the lead in the C Grade championships. As a result of these scores, balls only went down to 73. NTP: 3rd Paul Mason, 5th Geoff Fall, 9th Ken White, 12th Tex Van Der Kooi and 15th Craig Brown.

Third round championships update: The ladies played their second round on Wednesday 11. Kim Kennedy had a great second-round score of 78, which ‘shot her’ into the lead. Meredith Nursey is holding down second after a 92. These two are fighting it out for the overall title, but in the nett event Meredith has a battle on her hands with Lynda Dickson on nett 144, followed by the ever-improving Lisa King on 147, then Meredith on 149. With regard to the men’s event, Paul ‘Mr Consistent’ Mason is on track for his sixth championship title. He shot a very impressive 71, (second best gross score of the day) to have a commanding lead of 17 shots over young tyro Jon Cross, followed by fivetime champion Willo four shots further back (Paul would have to play like me next week to lose it). In B Grade, the current leader, Steuart Hawke, had

a terrific 80 (nett 66), to cement a solid lead of 11 over Dave Wappitt. Dave also acquitted himself well, shooting an 82 to be within five shots of Steuart. This grade appears to now be a battle between those two. In C Grade, as mentioned earlier, Mike Dobson has taken over the lead from Steve Noonan after shooting a great 87 gross. Steve still had a steady round of 94, which included a sensational eagle on the 10th (not to be outdone, Mike had a birdie on the same hole). Not surprisingly, these two impressive C Graders have cleared-out from the field to also make this ‘a two-horse race’. Mike is already a winner, having won the nett event for the championships (the East Hills Cup), which is taken over the first three rounds. His nett score of 205 trumped Steuart, who also impressed with a total of 208.

Top four battle hots up By CHRIS ANDERSON CRICKET action around the Yarra Valley is increasing in intensity as teams clamber to establish themselves in the upper rungs of the ladder. After five rounds, there is a log jam of teams hovering around the top four as two-day cricket is throwing up some hotly fought contests. Woori Yallock continues to impress in their title defence as they made short work of a sizeable chase against Hoddles Creek. The Wombats would’ve been well pleased with their day one total of 195. Despite facing a strong Woori Yallock batting line-up, they would’ve felt that if they could take early wickets then they would be right in the hunt. That proved to be the case as a lack of early wickets enabled the Tigers to control the chase from the beginning. For the second game in a row, a vital opening partnership between Ryan Smith (72) and Mick Dwyer (51) closed the door on any chances the visitors had of causing an upset. In the end, the Tigers made short work of the total, cruising to the target with eight wickets in hand, sending an ominous warning to the rest of the competition. With a top-order in complete control of their game and a bowling line-up that possesses skill and variety, Woori Yallock are now comfortably the team to beat as they now have extended their lead at the top of the ladder. Next up for the Tigers are Healesville, which have had to bide their time courtesy of a bye, and will be fully aware of the challenge ahead. Hoddles Creek, on the other hand, need to bounce back against a resurgent Yarra Junction, in full knowledge that they need to find a win to restore confidence and keep themselves entrenched in the four. Yarra Junction were the big winners of the round, outlasting Warburton-Millgrove in a classic two-day encounter. On the slow Yarra Junction oval, the home side needed to chase a tricky target of 163 to take the points. Patient bowling, and a slow outfield, made life tough early for the Eagles openers, but they were up to the challenge in the knowledge that a solid start to the innings would set up a successful chase. Marcus Hottes rarely gets much kudos for his batting, but over recent seasons he has been the rock of the Yarra Junction top order and adds the grit to a powerful and fast-scoring top order. His innings of 58 was the foundation to an opening stand of 56, while he was good support for the fast-scoring Quinton Hodgkinson (45) and Cam Spaulding (26) in building a dominant, albeit patient, position the home side had put themselves in. Just when they were about to close the book on this contest, Burra star all-rounder David Lever (5/50) turned the game on its ear with an inspiring spell which saw the Eagles lose 5/23 and put a tremor among the faithful. Unfortunately for the visitors, this is where the challenge ended, and gritty fight from the remaining batsmen saw Yarra Junction get home with three wickets in hand, and seven overs from stumps. The win sees Yarra Junction on the march after a disappointing start to the season. The Eagles will relish the opportunity to take on a stumbling Hoddles Creek, and a win would have them right in the mix heading towards the Christmas break. Warburton-Millgrove on the other hand need to bounce back against a desperate Mount Evelyn as they seek some consistency to their up and down start to the season. Mount Evelyn finds themselves entrenched at the bottom of the ladder after a disappointing showing against Seville. Seville batted patiently on day one to post a score of 171, and one would’ve thought that the Mount Evelyn batting line-up would’ve taken some lessons on putting together a patient innings on the slow outfield. From the outset, the scoring rate wasn’t going to be the issue, as the Rovers found enough ways to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Three early wickets to Matt Hadlum had the visitors on the back foot, but a pair of quickfire and significant partnerships from Gareth Fraser with brother Daniel, and then Brad Jones had the Rovers on top at 4/116 within sight of the tea interval.

Warburton-Milgrove younngster Angus Nelson puts everything into a cut shot at the Pictures: GREG CARRICK weekend. 146973

Gareth Fraser of Mount Evelyn drives one down the ground. 146973 In a stroke of desperation, and good management, Hadlum was tossed the ball for a second spell, and in combination with Ron Sandfort the pair made a mockery of the chase. Hadlum zeroed in on the stumps to claim masterful figures of 7/48, while Sandfort feasted on some poor Mount Evelyn batting to secure 3/28. In the end what looked to be a promising chase quickly turned into a disaster as the visitors were dismissed 40 runs short of their target. Mount Evelyn now have to quickly turn things around if they are to stay in touch with the competition, and will have to do so against a Warburton-Millgrove side that could serve up anything. Meanwhile, buoyed by the win, Seville now have a couple of weeks off, courtesy of the bye, to plan their attack towards Christmas with hope that a couple of wins before the break could see them putting their hands up for finals action. DJ Strachan Shield Yarra Junction 7/163 (M. Hottes 58, Q. Hodgkinson 45, C. Spaulding 26, David Lever 5/50) d Warburton-Millgrove 9/162 (M. Walker 48, David Lever 30, A. Humphrey 29no, T.
