Opposition fires up STATE Opposition Leader Matthew Guy joined Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Brad Battin at Monbulk Fire Station to pledge support for non-discriminatory presumptive legislation. Mr Guy and Mr Battin both pledged on Thursday 12 November they would support presumptive legislation that awarded equal compensation conditions to both volunteers and career firefighters. As compensation laws for firefighters currently stand, firefighters who contract cancer and other illnesses from smoke or chemical exposure must prove which fire or chemical incident caused their exposure. Legislation introduced at a federal
level and across other states presumes that the cancer developed from exposure during duty and shifts the onus of proof away from the firefighter. A bill to introduce presumptive legislation was knocked back several times by the then Liberal Victorian government over the last few years. Mr Guy said his party regrets not signing up to this legislation when in power and said the advice received from departments held them back. “Yes, it’s absolutely a regret,” he said. “Hindsight is a great thing of course, but it would certainly have been helpful to get better advice and to be able to sign.” Mr Guy said the figures received from treasury at the time made the legislation financially unworkable.
“Treasury were looking into a costs basis that was unrealistic and we were provided figures that were clearly unrealistic.” “When you look at the South Australian model today; that is clearly workable, if we had been provided that kind of information I would have set a very different tone of the debate,” he said. Mr Guy and Mr Battin also pledged to address other discrepancies between volunteer and career firefighters’ working conditions. “I will sign this pledge in every station in the state so people believe me and can hold me to it,” Mr Battin said. “Going forward we need legislation that is equal for all firefighters.” Rod Stevving, a volunteer firefighter with the Monbulk CFA, said volun-
teers had the same training and skills as career firefighters and that needed to be recognised in the legislation. “We’re not just weekend warriors,” he said. “We need to have both volunteers and career firefighters to work effectively and both deserve respect.” Jane Garrett, the current Minister for Emergency Services under Premier Daniel Andrews, said presumptive legislation will be delivered next year. “The Andrews Labor Government is keeping its promise to deliver presumptive legislation in 2016.” “We are currently working through the details and we are talking with stakeholders including the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria and the United Firefighters Union,” she said in a written statement.

The discussion today around presumptive legislation brought up some discrepancies between career and volunteer firefighters in the CFA that Mr Guy has committed to address. “Volunteer firefighters are the heart and soul of the CFA and the heart and soul of fire combat in Victoria,” he said. “We want to have a long-term conversation with our CFA volunteers and work out how they are not on par with some of their paid counterparts, and to bring them up to that standard.” Mr Guy has joined Mr Battin and Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe as three members of the Victorian Opposition to sign the pledge to support non-discriminatory presumptive legislation.

The Pathway for Carers project gives carers an opportunity to connect with one another and with service providers in an informal and low-pressure setting. The project is offered as a free service with no commitment by carers to attend a set number of walks and is designed to give carers a break from their caring role. POLICE are searching for would-be thieves who were caught trying to steal registration plates from a car in Montrose earlier this month, and asking for anyone with information to come forward. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that at 7.20pm on Sunday, a resident noticed an unknown person removing the registration plates from their car on the corner of Sheffield and Glasgow roads in Montrose. “When they confronted them, the offender threw their number plate at them,” Det Sgt Barrow said. He said the offender, who was wearing a bright blue hoodie with the hood over their face, then got into an older-model green-coloured Ford Falcon, and drove away. Det Sgt Barrow said anyone who might have witnessed suspicious behaviour, or the car in the area, should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

A WOMAN will face court next month for fraud, after a Yarra Glen burglary led to a police raid in the northern suburbs last week. On Friday 13 November, Yarra Ranges police officers executed a search warrant in Mernda, arresting a 34-year-old woman. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow sad the raid followed a burglary in Yarra Glen on 19 August. The woman was charged with multiple counts of fraud and bailed to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on 16 December. Subway safe stolen POLICE are searching for witnesses after a safe was stolen from a Seville restaurant earlier this month, setting off an alarm in the process. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that, at 11.56pm on Sunday 8 November, unknown persons jemmied open a back door at Seville’s Subway restaurant on the Warburton Highway. The burglars set off a monitored alarm when they entered, but stole a safe, which contained about $2000, and exited through the back door. Det Sgt Barrow said that anyone who might have seen suspicious behaviour, or vehicles parked around the restaurant at the time, should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

Confronted intruders flee POLICE are calling for information after two men were allegedly seen trying to force their way into a Chirnside Park property earlier this month. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said between 1.45pm and 1.50pm on Sunday 8 November, two men were allegedly seen trying to force open a rear door at a property in Meadow Fair Way in Chirnside Park. Det Sgt Barrow said that when a resident confronted the men, they ran, and no vehicles were heard nearby. The men were described as possibly aged in their twenties, of Islander appearance, with a large build. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Missing man is found safe, sound By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS MISSING 40-year-old man Toby Coxhill from The Basin was located by Richmond police on the morning of 13 November. Toby Coxhill from The Basin went missing at 8.30pm on Tuesday 10 November after
visiting family in Brunswick. Mr Coxhill had not been seen since he left the family member’s house, stating he was going to visit a friend but not disclosing his destination. Police have thanked everyone who helped search Toby on social media and are glad he was back with his family.

Inge said she took the shot in the afternoon light, with the contrast turned down slightly in order to capture the vibrant reds. According to Inge, she began feeding a male king parrot in 2006, with rosellas arriving not long after. “It takes quite a strategic effort to prevent them all from squabbling, though,” she said. More CCTV needed By PETER DOUGLAS A MT EVELYN woman who alleges she was a victim of rape in the town has called for more CCTV cameras in the streets. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, alleges she was the victim of a rape and assault on Swansea Road on Boxing Day of last year. At present, she says she has grown frustrated because the alleged offenders have been unable to be prosecuted due to the lack of witnesses and CCTV footage. The woman said she felt a need to speak out on this issue after an incident in Geelong in which brothers from Mount Evelyn and Olinda are facing court, charged with the alleged
abduction and gang rape of a girl, 14. “I strongly believe and feel very passionate about making our local communities a safer place,” she said. “I believe that cameras won’t stop the violence, though they are a massive breakthrough for many cases in terms of using public assistance to put a name to criminals. “Not only can CCTV footage help those who unfortunately fall victim to violence, but also catch offenders of a vast range of offences.” The woman also felt there was a lack of adequate lighting in the Mount Evelyn township, particularly along the many trails, parks and back streets. She said she felt too frightened to venture out at night in the town now, as she continued to recover
from the ordeal. “I’m doing really well at the moment, mostly because I received so much support from family and friends,” she said. “However, I still tend to live in a bubble and disconnect from the outside world. “I’m learning to speak out more now - I did hear about what happened in Geelong and wanted to speak.” In response to the woman’s message, the Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch has promised to bring up her concerns at its next meeting. Anne Welsh from the group also said it would also include the issue of lighting and CCTV in the coming quarterly newsletter. Ms Welsh believes there is some
CCTV in the main street, which was organised the Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce, but that it was very expensive to establish and monitor. She said extra lighting on trails in the area could definitely improve safety in the town. Meanwhile, the brothers charged over the Geelong incident - Kevin Andrew Wild, 28, from Olinda; and Allan Mark Wild, 29, from Mount Evelyn - faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last Friday, 13 November. The pair will now face a committal hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 19 February next year. The pair entered no plea or application for bail.
Students share the Christmas joy By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE Knox School in Wantirna South will again this year run their annual Giving Tree Appeal, raising money to buy toys for those in the community who may not know the joy of Christmas. The school donated over $10,000 worth of toys last year to the Salvation Army, and are hoping to break their record this year. Students from all year levels have pitched in to raise money by running fairs, raffles, free dress days and competitions. Year 5 teacher at The Knox School and co-ordinator of this year’s Giving Tree Appeal Kobi Searle said the appeal gave the students valuable lessons in humility and charity.

In previous years, the school has needed a six-tonne truck to deliver all the toys to the Salvation Army distribution centres in Rowville, Ferntree Gully and Dandenong.

A court to call their ver y own By PETER DOUGLAS EMERALD Lakers junior basketballers will soon boast one of the best home-court advantages in their league. The previously homeless club, which has more than 200 players, will this month start playing at one of the newest and best basketball stadiums in the region, thanks to a newly constructed facility at the Emerald Primary School. Thanks to much support from the school, the club and La Trobe MP Jason Wood, the stadium has been constructed inside the school grounds and features a full-size and a junior-size basketball court, as well as plenty of
room for family and spectators. The Emerald Lakers and the school will share the facility. Taking advantage of the stadium will be junior basketballers who range in age from eight to 14, and who make up an incredible 35 teams. Emerald Primary School principal, Mark Carver, said much great work had been completed behind the scenes. “What we have is a fantastic community resource and we’ll make great use of the facility, now the Lakers have a domestic base where they can train and play. “Without Jason Wood’s great support, this would never have happened.”
Mr Carver said the school would use the premises to conduct sports lessons and events. Meanwhile, Lakers coach Criss Johnston said it would deliver top-level facilities to eager young sports fans. Emerald Lakers Basketball Club was formed in 1989 and has continued to be a strong community sporting club. The club has always been committed to providing opportunities for all levels of players to join in and have some fun, regardless of their skill. The club will celebrate an open day for the stadium on Sunday, 22 November, with an official launch planned next year with Mr Wood.
AS SOMEONE who has worked in Local Government for more than 25 years, I find it amazing that Yarra Ranges Shire councillors can exempt themselves from the normal sensible checks and balances of financial governing. This move sounds more like some state in Mexico. Yes, women are entitled to financial assistance if they need it, but there should be financial checks as to the total income of a councillor’s family, similar to the age pension. A limit of $10,000 must be included to ensure that all councillors play by the same rules or we could give each councillor a credit card to do what they want, like some union officials. Teamwork needed on weeds WALKING or driving through the Dandenongs is becoming more and more frustrating. Weeds are out of control. As if the ground cover like Wandering Trad and Angled Onion or the gumtree killing English Ivy aren’t bad enough, the bigger weeds like Sycamore Maple and Sweet Pittosporum are allowed to spread freely. Many landowners probably don’t even realise their properties are a breeding ground for weeds and affecting large areas around theirs. Many, however, like some of my neighbours, simply don’t seem to care their inaction on private property has a serious negative effect on the surrounding National Park. If no-one takes responsibility, the fastspreading Sycamore will become a dominant tree in the Ranges. With seeding season around the corner, now is the time to act. I wish Yarra Ranges Council and Parks Victoria would co-ordinate targeted weed programs with residents. Getting rid of weeds is a team effort. Maarten Mulder, Kalorama.
Will volunteer pick up slack? CFA volunteers could end up in a political cross-fire early in this fire season. Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) forest firefighters are in dispute with the government over wages and conditions, and have placed part work bans on planned burns. The government has said it will use ‘other workers’. What if CFA volunteers are asked to be the ‘other workers’ or to be standby or backup crews? How to respond? CFA volunteers respond to all requests for emergency assistance, and rightly so. All triple-zero calls and strike team requests should be and will be honoured. So picking up the pieces after a 'planned disaster’ is just part of the everyday job of a CFA volunteer. But what is a right response if CFA volunteers are asked in advance to be part of a pre-organised team to back-up non-union DELWP ‘fire-lighters’? If volunteers agree, and act as de facto strike-breakers or scabs, that is an improper use of volunteers and could poison the relationship between forest firefighters and the 38,000 operational CFA volunteers. It also means that burns may be done with inadequate crews and patrolling, with a more likely breakout effect. Recently, Lancefield is an example of a burn which ‘got away’, probably due to inadequate patrolling and follow up. If volunteers elect to not be connected to planned burns by inexperienced nonunion crews, that very action may cause the government to re-think the use of unskilled labour in the dangerous work of planned burning. The best option is for each volunteer to search his or her conscience and decide whether or not to become a pawn in what is basically a political struggle. John Nieman, Monbulk.

War to end all wars remembered By PETER DOUGLAS A PASSIONATE Emerald community turned out to the town’s cenotaph last Wednesday, 11 November, for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony. An estimated 100 people paid their respects. In a positive sign for the future, a huge contingent of school-age children were present, who mixed with the many community leaders. Emerald RSL President, Peter Maloney, spoke about the importance of remembering Australians who had fought for their country, particularly in World War I. “Our small town of Emerald sent 100 men to the war and lost 32 of these young men in our population of maybe 1000,” he said. “And that was only the first world war, there were many more young Australians lost in World War II and other conflicts and that is why we stop now and remember.” Mr Maloney spoke of the symbolism of the red poppy, before inviting dignitaries and members of the public to lay

An estimated 400 people attended the local cenotaph to commemorate the end of World War I. Present were representatives from Mount Evelyn Primary School, St Mary’s Catholic School, Birmingham Primary School and Yarra Hills Secondary College. Mount Evelyn Combined School, led by Angela Glennie, sang ‘In Flan-
ders Fields’ and the national anthem. Brianna Moore and James Rhodes of St Mary’s Primary School recited the poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’. Guest speaker for the ceremony was Afghanistan veteran, Ben Gorfine. Owen Forrest and Keely Preston of Yarra Hills Secondary College read out the list of the Mount Evelyn Fallen. Meanwhile, four more name plaques were unveiled afterwards at the Mount Evelyn RSL, with names of RSL members who had past away in the last year.

The first serious tour from the duo will see them take their unique brand of folk, jazz and singer- songwriter genres around the country. The vibrant brass-clad acoustic duo will be heading west to Port Arlington, Warrnambool and Adelaide as well as Ballarat, Bendigo, Phillip Island, Albury, Canberra, and Sydney. One half of The Bean Project, Bryce Purcaton, said touring was great for the band but they felt like they were still growing. “We are still just working and building,” he said. Market fun with serious message SELBY CFA is intent on ensuring its community is well prepared for this coming fire season. The annual Selby Fire Brigade and Fire Awareness Info Day will be held on Saturday 21 November from 9am to 3pm with the local residents encouraged to attend. Martin steps up By DENNIS FULLER THE ducks were all in alignment and standing to attention when Ross Martin (12) stepped on to the first tee at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday. Players were limited to five clubs but that did not stop Martin from coming in with 40 stableford points to win A Grade and overall. B Grade was won on a countback by Ken Hill (18) from Dennis Fuller (18) when they both carded 39 points. Of the confused and befuddled left behind, it was only Ian Scott and Peter Jones who got near their handicaps when the both amassed 34 points. Dean Shannon was nearest the pin on the 4th, Peter Glasscock the 7th, Peter Clowes the 12th, Graham White the 13th and Justin Fuller, visiting from
Georgia, USA, finished the round well by pocketing the Aussie dollars for the pro pin 18th. The ladies' event saw a titanic struggle for most of the round until Petra Clowes triumphed over Phillipa Crossley narrowly on a countback. Wednesday’s Opulently Fashioned Golf was a stroke event with varying tee positions. Bobby Kennedy (22) picked up and ran with this format and crossed the finishing line with a nett 59. The unlucky schmucks in second place were Ben Balfour (24) and Graham White (10) who both waddled in with 61 but no bickies. Next week is a 4BBB event which should cause some excitement when partners are being conscripted.

Students spike state championship THE Monbulk College Year 7 boys volleyball team last Friday participated in the state volleyball finals after earlier in the year winning through their division and eastern region competitions, a competition which started with about 300 teams. To reach the final was a fantastic effort. On the day, the team played three pool games defeating Maribyrnong, Bendigo and Trafalgar.
They were then victors against Westall in the semi-final before finally defeating Eltham in the final to become state champions without losing a set. This team also won the Victorian Schools Cup in term three and look forward to competing in upcoming Australian Volleyball Schools Cup with Monbulk College’s other seven teams. This is the largest school sporting event
in the Southern Hemisphere, involving about 4000 students from around Australian and New Zealand. It is to be held in Melbourne from 6-11 December. The Monbulk College Year 8 girls also participated in the state final last Thursday finishing runners-up continuing the successful and rich history of volleyball at Monbulk College.

Girls’ big shot at cricket LAST Sunday, 8 November, was the beginning of a new cricketing opportunity for girls in region. Representatives from the Ferntree Gully, Ringwood and Yarra Valley cricket associations gathered at Knox Gardens Cricket Club in Wantirna to compete in the inaugural ‘Outer East Region Girls Tri-Series’. Formed in conjunction with the three cricket associations and Cricket Victoria’s Outer East Regional Cricket manager, Di Day, the competition
is aimed at creating a chance for girls to continue playing cricket after the success of the VMCU Claudia Fatone Shield last summer. During this series, each association will play off against each other in two formats, three carnival days where all three associations meet and play two Twenty20 split innings matches followed by Wednesday nights in head-to-head matches for a total of 15 games across the season. The first carnival of the series was held last
Sunday at Knox Gardens Cricket Club and was the first chance to get all players together, and gave the girls another opportunity to represent in association colours. The day started off with FTGDCA taking on YVCA who were a younger side compared to their opponents, however, they put up a great fight although FTGDCA came home with the win. YVCA then played RDCA in the second match with the YVCA coming up as eventual
winners against their underrepresented opponent. Then, as the day began to heat up, the final match was played between the RDCA and FTGDCA who proved too strong for the rising RDCA team seeing FTGDCA winning both their matches across the day. Bradbury last man standing in a great game By STEVE BROWN FERNTREE Gully has found its way to the top of the Reeves Shield ladder after round 4 was completed at the weekend. Chasing Knox Gardens’ challenging 258 for victory, the Blues with two wickets in hand required three runs from the last over as Peter Mannaert in typical style slapped a boundary with five balls remaining in what was a great game of local cricket. Earlier, the innings was set up by a magnificent 111 from Jayden Bradbury who has returned from a stint at Monash Tigers. Bradbury’s 68-run partnership with Bryce Galvin for the sixth wicket was a crucial period in the match, as was Shane Richardson’s contribution of 37 not out. The Gully has now found a way to win the close ones, whilst Knox Gardens has now failed twice to defend scores of 250. In another tight encounter at Carrington Park, Monbulk who were without luck at the beginning of the season has bounced back to defend 196 against the much-improved Knoxfield line-up. The Knights were dismissed 19 runs short for 177 despite a fine 64 from Luke Scanlan before succumbing to the nagging bowling of Jason Fraser who collected 4/62. Johnson Park failed in their quest against The Basin, going down by 87 runs at Fair Park. Josh Lee’s unbeaten 93 on day one was the difference in the game as Johnson Park never really recovered from 2/5 after Steve Ryan’s first over of the day, dismissing openers Bryn Gaunt and Steve Devenish.
‘Private’ Ryan finished with 3/35 and was well supported by Matthew Heskes (3/38) and Shepparton new comer Tyson McKenzie 3/35. The only Sharks batsman to put his hand up was Andrew Devenish who worked hard for his 52. Belgrave won their local derby against Upwey Tecoma in convincing style.
