Barwon Coast began building a sandbag wall at Ocean Grove Main Beach last Tuesday, to protect dunes being battered by coastal tides. The 50m long and 5m high wall will protect the dune on the east side of the beach’s concrete ramp. “It’s a temporary solution,” said Barwon Coast general manager Gary McPike. “There’s been quite a bit of erosion there over the years. If that continues, it will threaten the car park and the toilets.” Mr McPike said the total cost of the project was about $90,000, which included planning for the project. “We think it’s a good spend of money,” he said. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning gave Barwon Coast permission to begin the wall. “It was on the provision we would plan for a more permanent solution,” he said. Mr McPike said a permanent solution would most likely be a new ramp, replacing the existing concrete ramp. “We’ve allocated the funds for the planning of that,” he said. “In six months we will hopefully have finalised the plans for the new ramp.” The sandbag wall should be finished sometime this week, according to Mr McPike. “Provided storms don’t interrupt the work,” he added. The dune damage is the result of what’s known as a ‘terminal scour’. Mr McPike said waves don’t hit the beach parallel but rather move sand across the beach. “When you’ve got a hard structure on a beach, you get a build up of sand on one side and erosion on the other,” he explained.

This year’s Ocean Grove Park Car Boot Sale is shaping up to be possibly the biggest yet, according to organiser Murray Waugh. “It will be a huge car boot sale - we’ve got 55 sites booked so far,” he told the Voice last Friday. “I’m getting heaps of calls and there’s still a week and a half to go.” It appears this year’s numbers will eclipse last year’s sale, which Murray said had roughly 50 sites booked. Murray encouraged locals to come meet their community and enjoy a barbecue for lunch, put on by the Ocean Grove Park Association. “It’s a very friendly atmosphere,” he said. “There’ll be a huge variety of pre-loved household goods and lots of bargains.” The car boot sale begins at 8.30am this Saturday, at Ocean Grove Park, and runs until 12.30am.

Signs of the times “As an organisation we are interested in community and families,” Nigel said. “So when we heard about Elwood and his keen interest in road signs, we saw it as a genuine opportunity to help.” Elwood’s mother Stephanie Majewski said the tour was a dream come true for her son. “VicRoads has certainly gone above and beyond by helping us get a brand-new sign for Elwood’s bed-
room wall,” she said. “We were thrilled that they offered him a tour of the depot as well.” The event concluded with Nigel thanking the family for spending some time with VicRoads staff. “VicRoads has a major focus on community and road safety and this occasion is an excellent opportunity for us to engage with an enthusiastic young boy and his family,” he said. “VicRoads celebrates diversity and it is a pleasure for us to do some-
Trees bring Christmas cheer By LUKE VOOGT OCEAN Grove Scout Group will bring some cheer to town with its annual Christmas Tree Sale, starting this Saturday. “We’ve got the car boot sale down here the same day - which is great,” said local leader Lisa Dyson. “We’ll have the music and the atmosphere.” The tree sale is the group’s major fund-raiser, which goes towards equipment and activities, like its planned trip to the New Zealand Jamboree next year. “It’s basically for the day-to-day running of the group,” Lisa said. The two-day sale, at Ocean Grove Park, normally makes $8,000 to $10,000 for the Scout group. It reached $10,000 last year. “We sold 200 trees on each day,” said Scout committee member Fiona Seitz. “We’re trying to hit $12,000 this year.” The Scout group will donate a Christmas tree to the Ocean Grove Library and a recipient nominated

by Ocean Grove Connected Communities. Scout committee member, Kate Callaghan, said it was a great year for the Scouts, thanks to community contributions. “The group has been able to deliver one of the most exciting and active programs to our youth members throughout the year,” she said. Kate thanked council for funding leader training and Ocean Grove Connected Communities for contributing towards the uniforms of members.
She also thanked the RSL, Rotary and Lions for donating funds to the group’s expedition to the War Memorial in Canberra to commemorate the Anzac Day Centenary. The Scout group will donate $2 from every Christmas tree preordered online to a participating community organisation of the customer’s choice. The sale continues on the following Saturday at the Ocean Grove Park. Full details are on the website at www.oceangrovescouts.com.
thing special for this little boy.” He said he hoped the tour would create long-lasting memories for Elwood and his family. The event was hosted by VicRoads and South West Maintenance Alliance Manager, Peter Stringer. The depot is home to the VicRoads and Fulton Hogan alliance team which, in September, commenced a road maintenance and improvement program in the region, worth approximately $40 million per year.
In brief Police call for fresh vigilance
BELLARINE police are warning locals to stay vigilant, after a recent spate of house burglaries and car thefts in Ocean Grove and Clifton Springs. Senior Sergeant Nick Terry, of Bellarine police, said many car thefts were opportunistic. “We ask people not to be complacent as to where they’ve left their keys,” he said. “Make sure they’re not accessible - thieves are robbing people’s houses to steal their cars.” Sen Sgt Terry also encouraged residents to lock their homes and cars, to prevent other items being stolen. “If you see any suspicious activity, report it straight away,” he said. Residents can report any crime or suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Bellarine police on 5256 2698.

ALTHOUGH Christmas is a month away, a special present arrived early for one youngster at the VicRoads Fulton Hogan depot in Geelong. Elwood Majewski is a threeyear-old autistic boy from Ocean Grove with a love for road signs and road safety. This month Elwood took a guided tour of the depot, met staff and received two shiny new signs from VicRoads Manager, Operations, Nigel Powers.

By LUKE VOOGT Ocean Grove students will meet racing royalty next week, as former Melbourne Cup Winner, Sub Zero, visits the Bellarine. It’s the first time the champion horse has visited the Bellarine in his 10 years as a ‘Community Education Ambassador’ for Racing Victoria.
“‘Subbie’ visits schools all over Victoria,” Racing Victoria community education co-ordinator Kerri Rees said. “We’ve visited 600 schools in that time.” Kerri, a Clifton Springs resident, said Sub Zero was scheduled to visit Ocean Grove Primary School next Wednesday.
She said the 27-year-old horse relished getting out and about. He kept a tight schedule, appearing at nursing homes, hospitals and race days. “He has such a beautiful connection with the kids and the elderly,” she said. According to Kerrie, the champion horse starts pacing restlessly
around the yard when he’s not on the road for more than a few weeks. “He absolutely loves it - you’ll see,” she said. Sub Zero also will visit Drysdale and Clifton Springs Primary Schools and Drysdale Grove nursing home, along with other locations in the Bellarine.

Roundabout crash in Grove carpark A 50-year-old crashed into tree at The Mex carpark last Friday, after allegedly losing consciousness at the wheel. Sergeant Grant Langmaid, of Bellarine Police, said the man was driving on Grubb Road towards Drysdale at around 10am. Sgt Langmaid said the man pulled into The Mex carpark when he began to feel faint. “He lost consciousness and the next thing he knew he had hit a tree,” he said. The car hit the tree front-on and sustained extensive damage to the bonnet. Ambulance officers treated the man at the scene. Sgt Langmaid said the man was still confused, but was not seriously injured. Police are continuing their investigations.

THREE local coastal organisations encouraged residents to “Meet the Neighbours” at 13W Beach this month, raising awareness of local wildlife. Residents took turns spotting hooded plover eggs and guessing distances from (cardboard) seals during an information session on 15 November. Wildlife displays were set up along the foreshore, along with a marquee with information on local dog-control orders. “We are asking all dog owners to keep their dogs close by when off-leash and well away from any wildlife,” Barwon Coast’s Maddie Glynn said. Jimmy Graham, from Jimmy’s Dog Training, was on hand to provide pooch-related advice. Maddie said some dog behaviour changed markedly when the wildlife specimens were displayed along the foreshore. “This is a timely reminder that it doesn’t matter how well trained your dog is, when they are confronted by something new, their demeanour can quickly change,” she said. “Some became very wary and displayed signs of aggression.” Maddie said dog-owners and wildlife could easily co-exist. “Enjoy our coastal zone, but please be responsible - this simple request could prevent you receiving a fine,” she said. “Stay away from wildlife, keep your dogs close to you, clean up your rubbish including the dog poo and help us to educate others.” Ocean Grove Coastcare, Barwon Coast and Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine organised the event.

Bree-arne’s book launch By LUKE VOOGT ABOUT 30 people joined Bree-arne Manley at Green Room studios for the launch of her first book Hope - Fighting Multiple Sclerosis. “It was just a nice quiet afternoon” she said. “That was probably a good thing - I was a blubbering mess when I went to do the speech.”
Bree said the launch was emotional for her and that writing the book had been therapeutic. “It was a hard thing to be so honest in the book and put it all out there,” she said. “Hopefully it helps someone.” The launch featured music by Torquay musician ‘Homesick Joe’, whose wife is friends
with Bree and also has MS. “Us musicians tend to know each other,” said Bree, herself a guitarist and singer. Bree said the book was available on Amazon and would be available at Farmers Harvest in Marcus Hill. She hopes to make it available in local book stores in the coming weeks.

Voice visits Nepal again FOR the second time in a fortnight the Voice visited the beautiful Himalayas, this time with local resident Alice King. Alice took with her the front page of the Voice and an article in that edition about her training for the trip in September. “Due to strict weight restrictions on our gear, I couldn’t take the whole paper with me!” she told the Voice. Alice took the trek for two reasons: to make her 50th year her best yet and to raise money for Alzheimer’s research.
So far she’s raised $3,524, smashing her previous goal of $2,000. Alice’s 82-year-old father, Francis, was diagnosed with the disease 10 years ago. “The most distressing thing for the family is the person losing bits of who they are,” Alice told the Voice in September, as she trained for the monumental trek. “For dad it’s more not being able to do some of the things he used to do.” To donate to Alice’s cause visit atrektoremember2015.everydayhero.com/au/alice-trek-to-remember

Hard to see wood for the trees RE: ‘Concern as trees lopped’ in Ocean Grove Voice, November 11 Dear Editor, It occurred to me that if council was thinking of removing the last cypress tree at Lookout Point, they might like to do something artistic with the stump. Think outside the square - don’t just chainsaw it off unevenly three inches above the ground. They could cut it a metre high and make a nice picnic table base. Then, on my recent travels to Goolwa, SA, there was an amazing sculpture carved into a tree trunk, which depicted many indigenous animals. It was carved by two

C
council workers who volunteered many hours to the community for this wonderful sculpture. I wonder if we can follow their example with a similar artistic project, which would be an ongoing tribute for these majestic old trees which have been landmarks of the town. Maybe this could be a community art project to aim for. Ocean Grove was fashioned after its namesake in New Jersey USA because of its resemblance “a grove of trees by the ocean”. With the current relentless, rapid growth and development we have lost most of the larger canopy trees
especially along the horizon of The Avenue, which made the town so appealing upon approach. Sadly we lost an avenue of 100 trees opposite the Nature Reserve on Grub Road to make way for a “T” intersection into Oakdene Estate and the rare yellow gums were removed along Thacker Street for a new housing project. Offset planting never replaces the large canopy trees we lose, which is all too evident. Shrubs and grasses are a poor substitute and the birds and wildlife have fast lost their natural habitat. Julie Pedler, Ocean Grove.

ABOUT 140 locals gathered in the sunshine of Ocean Grove Park as the town marked Remembrance Day earlier this month. All ages were involved in the respectful and modest service at the town’s memorial cenotaph. Former Ocean Grove RSL president Keith Hankin was the guest speaker while there were contributions from Bellarine Secondary College students Evelyn de Costa and Edward Forde who read In Flanders Fields and the reply to In Flanders Fields. Well-known local piper Brian was on hand to welcome the crowd, sub-branch padre Phillip Christian read the prayer and blessing and president Graham Fisher led proceedings reading Ode to the Fallen, laying wreath on behalf of the RSL.

The charity home at 1 Alcandre Street, Ocean Grove has reached lock up stage and we’re all so very excited. Massive efforts from Jarred Brown from JB Building And Carpentry Pty. Ltd, Merv Godfrey from Godfrey Builders and Trent Comelli from Trenic to get all the exterior cladding and eave work completed. Awesome job guys. Thanks! It has been exciting to watch the progress of the home and the
offer of support from suppliers and subcontractor of Geelong Homes and the local community is overwhelming. The home will be auctioned off on 27th February 2016 by Hayden Ocean Grove and all profits raised from the sale of the home will be donated to local Charity River’s Gift, to support them with the fantastic work they do to raise awareness and fund research into Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
We invite you to follow Geelong Homes’ Pledge for River’s Gift, the progress of the build and show your support to River’s Gift - so we can breathe life back into SIDS research.

GEELONG Production Company Inc and Mad As Us Productions bring to life Mike Leigh’s 1970s classic play ’Abigail’s Party’ at the Potato Shed this December. Starring Wentworth’s Libby Tanner, the play focuses on an evening of domestic hell in the guise of a suburban drinks soiree. While teenager Abigail parties a few doors away, the pretentious Beverly and her estate agent husband, Laurence, entertain their neighbours - Abigail’s mother, Susan, ex-footballer, Tony, and his wife, Angela. As the alcohol flows, tensions in the hosts’ barely functional marriage emerge and their obsessions, prejudices and petty competitiveness are ruthlessly, and hilariously, exposed. Libby has previously starred in Stingers, Police Rescue Special Ops and Fireflies and most recently in Nowhere Boys and Wentworth. After moving to Geelong, Libby rediscovered her passion for theatre and teamed up with Stephen Macklin to co-found the Geelong Production Company Inc. The two studied theatre together at Ballarat University with Libby working mostly in television and Stephen in and around the entertainment industry in Sydney. “Don’t miss this fantastic new production from a Geelong based company featuring locals Libby Tanner and Stephen Macklin, director,” Cr Andy Richards said. Cast: Libby Tanner, Richard Sutherland, Brad Beales, Rose Sejean and Kethly Hemsworth.

Amanda and her early festive present
Our Shop Local winner Amanda Hooper with the Voice’s Leigh Keast. 147342
1206740-KK49-15
WITH Christmas looming, this fortnight’s winner of the Voice’s Shop Local Competition Ocean Grove mother Amanda Hooper - says it couldn’t have come at a better time. Amanda’s prize includes a $40 Book Grove voucher, $25 for Cleo Fine Jewellery and $250 to spend at Ocean Grove Supertoys. “I’ve got four children aged six to 17,” she said. “So the Supertoys, Book Grove and Cleo Fine Jewellery vouchers will come in very handy.” Amanda said she and her family tried to do as much shopping as they could in Ocean Grove. “There are some really good services here,” she said. “I work at a family-run business - a local winery - so know how important it is to support local business.” Amanda is also involved in Ocean Grove Primary School. “The local businesses are very good to the primary school, so it’s good to reciprocate,” she said. The mother of four was ecstatic to receive the award from the Voice’s Leigh Keast last Friday. “I think I’ll go spend some money now,” she said. Amanda also won vouchers from Parts4Auto, Ocean Grove Camera and Photos, Bakers Delight, Ocean Grove Newsagency and Greg Sly Optometry.

Reading between meaningful lines
Cleo Fine Jewellery was born on 1st December 1995 in Geelong and opened its store in Ocean Grove in 2000. Cleo’s mission statement was to offer a full service Jewellery store locally without the need to travel to Geelong. With nearly 70 years of Jewellery experience between both Andrew and Donna Nicholl, they have achieved just that! Buy a ring at Cleo’s and have it sized while you enjoy a coffee at one of the many café’s close by. Need a watch, but can’t find one that fits? No problem! The band is adjusted while you wait. You have a special occasion and forgot to have your ring cleaned? Easy! Rings can be professionally cleaned, polished and checked for claw damage in the time it takes you to do your shopping.

Bookgrove is a modern, independently owned and locally operated bookstore on the Bellarine Peninsula in the heart of Ocean Grove that has stood the test of time since 2009. It sells books, ranging from Australian and international fiction, latest releases, best sellers, junior fiction, young adult fiction, children’s picture and board books, gardening and landscape design, history and politics, biographies and memoirs, art and design, craft, travel, sports, health and wellbeing and cookbooks and it stocks titles from international and national book awards and adult colouring books. Owner Stacey Moore, a local for 18 years, employs many staff of varied ages who all live and work in Ocean Grove. “I opened a bookstore in Ocean Grove as books are my
passion and Ocean Grove people love books and needed a quality bookstore,” she said. “Most of my business in terms of the sale of books is with Ocean Grove people who are strong supporters of the vision of Bookgrove and permanent holiday makers and tourists. Outside of the sale of books, my business extends to liaising with people all over Australia and the globe, with suppliers and other booksellers, membership organisations such as Australian Booksellers and independent booksellers. My business is going okay and I have the Ocean Grove community to thank for that.” Bookgrove helps the community in many ways by supporting schools, kindergartens across the Bellarine with fundraising and book selections for their libraries.
Stacey is also involved with the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club in many volunteer capacities. Away from the business Stacey has many passions, and of course she is addicted to reading. Other interests are keeping fit by swimming, surfing, yoga, and surf life-saving. She also loves gardening. “Pottering among the greenery of plants is very healing,” she said. Check out www.bookgrove. com.au and www.indies.com. au/bookgrove, which is linked with the network of Australian Independent booksellers of which Stacey is a member. Bookgrove is also active on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. “We love social media,” Stacey said.

WONDERFUL Websites is just that - they offer website design and development as well as graphic design and online marketing. Wonderful Websites has been in operation for five years and has built more than 130 websites in that time, and designed more than 30 logos. Owner Shelley Gross relies on contractors for busy peak periods, but generally does most of the work herself. She has great support from her husband who has an accounting and business background. Shelley spent 14 years as a quarantine officer. “I found the work to be quite repetitive and was not able to explore my creative side,” she said. “My husband and I moved to Ocean Grove 12 years ago with our 18-month-old daughter and another baby on the way. “We now have three children and love living in Ocean Grove. Ocean Grove offers so much both socially and business-wise. “I am lucky to be able to help those businesses promote themselves to the big wide world through online avenues where there are no boundaries or borders.” A large percentage of Shelley’s business is local, but she also services clients in regional Victoria, Melbourne and interstate. “It is such a booming industry, and my business is growing exponentially,” she said. Shelley was raised in Boort,

a lot of tourists from Christmas to Easter,” Brendan said. YOU can’t get much more local than Hayden Real Estate in Ocean Grove. Hayden is a residential real estate company that deals primarily with the sale and leasing of residential homes and units. In the past, the business has come under the guise of McKewan and Son Pty Ltd (est 1969 in Geelong) and Guyett Real Estate. They have been trading as Hayden Real Estate for around 10 years, however the current business (in one form or another) has been in the terrace since the 1960s. The Hayden Real Estate brand was established in country Victoria in 1928. Andrew Hamilton and Hugh McKewan became friends and then business partners after Hugh sold Andrew a house in 2007. They have 17 staff, all specific to various departments. Hugh worked in the bottleshop at the Barwon Heads Hotel for a couple of years after school and then came kicking and screaming into his father’s business. “Shortly thereafter I realised I was quite good at it, became engaged in the business and then passionate about it,” he said. “Eighteen years later I can’t imagine doing anything else.” Andrew worked in various marketing roles in both Melbourne and Sydney before making the seachange. “Both sets of my grandparents lived in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads as well as aunties and uncles so in a lot of ways it is just home,” Hugh said.
Hayden Real Estate directors Hugh McKewan and Andrew Hamilton run a lifestyle and property investment podcast radio show called Ocean Grove Living. 147336 “Andrew was looking for the seachange and chose the Ocean Grove community for the children and the beach.” Hayden Real Estate has been serving locals and seachangers for years. “Given the nature of our business we do deal a lot with the people of Ocean Grove but we also deal with plenty of Melbournites and country Vic people as well,” Hugh said. “A year or two ago we set up a series of initiatives designed to provide accurate information to Ocean Grove property owners, so that they can make informed decisions for their future. “This takes the form of our twice weekly podcast, the Ocean Grove Living Radio show, monthly reports, blogs,
social media updates and local media availability. “The information and opinions we provide are always genuine and not self-serving. We believe that this is appreciated and that business is coming as a result of that.” Hayden has structured their businessto service the Ocean Grove Community specifically, and have become active in local clubs and charities. Andrew is the president of the tennis club and they are long term sponsors of Ocean Grove Bowling Club, Collendina Cobras Junior Football Club and various other clubs and charities. ate or give new life too,” Corrie said. “Social media has given me a platform where I can share my work with others and give them the opportunity to ask questions or place orders.” “It’s so important to support small local businesses and to keep our money in our community.” Melanie Renton-Wright and Matty Wright are the locals behind Calmsea Creatives, making concrete and recycled timber homewares. “After living in Ocean Grove my whole life, it’s so nice to find like-minded people and be able to support each other in our coastal hub,” Melanie said. “We are stoked to be a part of the OGBH Locally Made community. It’s an amazing online directory and a great way to support local businesses.” The OGBH Locally Made group also features local shops and businesses that support local makers, said Karri. “New cafe Hello Birdie in Ocean Grove is a fabulous ex-
ample of this. They have filled their walls with beautiful products made locally,” she said. “It’s just fantastic.” Other businesses supporting local makers include The Health Creation Centre and Deckle in Ocean Grove. The Ocean Grove Toy Library and Wallington WRG are holding community events in December and have offered free stalls to local makers and artisans. “It’s such a great initiative and means a lot for those who are starting out,” Karri said. Another local Kathryn McCauley has recently launched a series of online guides to towns on the Bellarine. After seeing a gap in the online promotion of local businesses Kathryn has started with A Guide To: Ocean Grove, which promotes them and community groups through photos on Instagram. Here is a small sample of the work local makers are listing on the OGBG Locally Made Facebook group.

Almost 500 locals have joined a new group on Facebook featuring creatives from Ocean Grove, who sell their goods online from their own homes. Karri Clifford, from The Planter Pod, recently set up the OGBH Locally Made group to support local makers and help businesses source locally-made items. “There is a big shift towards supporting local but without a shopfront, creatives have to work extra hard to promote their work,” the Ocean Grove resident said. “When I started my business 18 months ago I found it difficult to get my work out there. Karri said she now had regular customers, stockists and a following on social media. “But I remember thinking, ‘how do I let everyone know about my work without a shop?’” she said. “This group allows our community to shop locally and gives creatives the opportunity to promote their work with no costs attached.” On the group’s page you’ll find ceramics, concrete pots, terrariums, macrame hangers, jewellery, artwork, wooden furniture, wall features, photography, art, linen, clothing, baby wares and much more. And they’re all made in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads or the local area. Another local using the group to promote her work is Corrie Hale, from Wood Love Designs. Corrie creates beautiful pieces of wooden furniture and art from her garage in Ocean Grove. “I love to show off the natural grain of wood and let it be the hero in the furniture I cre-

Tawny chicks thriving - the best of times By JEN CARR
I’VE spent the past few weeks on a wild goose/tawny chase, trying to locate the tawny frogmouth chicks in Woodlands and in another location in Ocean Grove. Tawny frogmouths are so interesting to watch, and the young stay in the nest for (it seems) about two to three weeks after hatching, then even before they seem capable of flying they move to a different location. I think the young must move by climbing and walking on interconnecting branches of trees. They must not be too far from their nest, but they are so clever at hiding that I have totally lost both families of tawnies and I hope that they turn up safe and sound somewhere soon. The three galah chicks in Pete and Chris’s garden in Woodlands left the nest, and haven’t returned to their garden since. The kookaburras are nesting in Pete and Chris’s garden, and I look forward to monitoring the chicks over the next few weeks. I’ve been taking a few walks in the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve lately, as I saw on Facebook that some lucky photographers captured a sacred kingfisher and brown goshawk from the West Dam bird hide. The photos that they took were magnificent, but alas I haven’t been able to locate the same birds during my visits to the bird hide (just lots of blowflies and mosquitoes). The Nature Reserve is a hive of activity at the moment. John Sharp photographed a wallaby with a joey in the pouch which was great to see. I bumped into Kevin
Teasdale at the Nature Reserve one morning and we had a close encounter with 15 black cockatoos, and one was a juvenile bird which was wonderful. I participated in a Latham’s Snipe survey which was conducted around the Bellarine Peninsula on 14 November. I surveyed the lake in Kingston Estate, and I didn’t see a Latham’s Snipe there, but did observe 12 reed warblers, and a newly hatched dusky moorhen and another very young purple swamphen - it’s reassuring that young birds can survive in that lake with so many dogs and cats around. The survey did reveal that there were a whopping 35 Latham’s Snipe at Begola Wetlands, which is many more that I would have imagined. I think birds are safer in a fenced off area, so I will continue to request that Kingston Lake be fenced off to help protect the birds. Speaking of Begola, I have been observing an Australasian grebe nesting there, and I noticed three beautiful stripy young chicks this week, so I will keep an eye on these young birds (unless they disappear like the tawnies do). There will be hooded plovers nesting on the beach from now on, so please keep dogs under control near the signed areas, thanks. You can keep an eye on the organised birdwatching activities conducted by the Bellarine Birdlife Group by going to the website at http://birdlife.org.au/locations/ birdlife-bellarine-peninsula.

We conserve, present and enhance the natural & developed coastal environs for the enjoyment and use of all
BARWON COAST Barwon Coast is a Committee of Management appointed by the State Government with responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13thBeach. Our Committee members are local residents appointed with consideration of the skills and experience that they have to offer in the management of this important piece of coastline. LIVING WITH OUR WILD LIFE – DOGS ON OUR BEACHES As we approach summer, with its inevitable influx of visitors, it is timely to remember that dogs on the beach is not always a care free occurrence. Uncontrolled dogs rushing at people can be very scary for many people to the point some people avoid the beach; wildlife can be seriously impacted especially our beach nesting birds like the Hooded Plover. Dog excrement is never pleasant if not picked up by owners. Our dogs love the beach; however we must be mindful of other users and our wildlife inhabitants that have nowhere else to go; we urge all dog owners to be responsible for their pets. Barwon Coast has for many years worked closely with the City of Greater Geelong to inform the community of the issues and regulations around responsible dog ownership; this will continue this year with COGG officers using a new 4WD vehicle providing greater access along our coast, enforcement of regulations will be of particular importance. BARWON HEADS PROMENADE UPDATE In late May this year sections of the Barwon Heads Seawall were damaged by storm events, revealing significant voids under the promenade; this resulted in about 200 metres of the promenade being closed due to concerns for public safety. Since the failure of sections of the seawall in May, Barwon Coast has worked continuously toward a solution that would enable the promenade to be opened as soon as is practical. Rebuilding of the seawall commenced on Monday 28th September and is progressing well, with over half of the wall rebuilt at the time of writing. The rebuilt promenade will also include a handrail to address concerns for public safety. It will be a similar design to the Barwon Heads Bridge and the Ocean Grove main beach seawall. In the interest of public safety, all visitors to the area are asked to take note of the site signage and only walk as directed.
Particularly be advised that at times the riverbank beach maybe closed to limit risk to pedestrians. Barwon Coast is confident the rebuild of almost 200 lineal metres of the seawall and the promenade path can be completed prior to the summer season. BARWON HEADS CARAVAN PARK – HOWARD HARMER OVAL PRECINCT MASTER PLAN Barwon Coast, in partnership with the Barwon Heads Football Netball Club, has commenced work on a Master Plan for the oval precinct to guide improvements over the next 5 to 10 years. Consultants Thompson Berrill Landscape Design have been engaged by Barwon Coast to facilitate community engagement and the development of the plan. Preliminary consultation has been undertaken with the Club, Caravan Park, and members of the community and it is expected that a draft plan will be available for full community comment by mid to late December. LET OUR SEA BE PLASTIC BAG FREE This month saw phase 2 of the Let Our Sea Be Plastic Bag Free in Barwon Heads with the launch of the Borrow and Bring Back reusable shopping back loan scheme now available to all shoppers in Barwon Heads. Forgotten to take your reusable bag shopping, no stress, just pick up a Borrow a Bag from IGA, Newsagency or Starfish Bakery and return them on your next trip. Please remember others would like to use this free service, so it is important that you do return the bags. CRAB NETTING BAN: Please be aware that due to the Rock Lobster closed season, hoop nets must not be used on the ocean side of the Barwon Heads Bridge from the 15th September to the 15th November. Hoop nets may still be used on the inland side of the bridge at any time for the collection of sand crabs. To report illegal fishing call 13FISH (13 4374). I encourage you to contact Barwon Coast to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning 5254 1118. Gary McPike General Manager

Endless Summer Cafe, The Terrace, Ocean Grove - long-time local surfers Steve ‘Chooka’ Piec, Ian Duckworth and Bill Kelly are regulars at the Endless Summer Cafe. The trio are among surfers who have donated memorabilia to the venue.
The summer is endless 1206858-KC48-15
ENDLESS Summer Cafe has made some changes to its menu, featuring scrumptious homemade cakes and slices, as well as exchanging recipes with some of its loyal customers. The cafe has an exciting new menu that will be launched in the coming weeks with the addition of some new seafood dishes sourced from local providers. All of the favourites that they are known for will still be available, including the deli-
cious eggs benedict, smashed avocado, breakfasts, kids racing cars, cupcakes, and the best coffee getting around - ‘Naked Espresso’. Coming into the Christmas season they will be making their own delicious plum puddings ... it’s a family secret passed down from Mandy’s great grandmother and there will be a range of sizes to suit everyone. At Endless Summer Cafe, they love surfing! Along with the surf
inspired takeaway coffee cups, Chooka and Bill’s have made generous contributions to making the cafe as iconic today as it would have looked in the ’60s, with such beautiful longboards lining the ceiling and walls, and photos all over the walls from old Ocean Grove and the ‘Young Wave Hunters’. It really is worth a look at some of their surfing history. You never know, you may see yourself or someone you know in the photos.
It’s 12 months down and the cafe has gone from being the new kids on the block to being a much-loved Ocean Grove cafe - the overwhelming support from the local and surrounding community has been amazing! The cafe would like to thank the Ocean Grove Community for their ongoing support in their first 12 months and they are excited about the years ahead.

Season shaping up Compiled by Jen Franks
THE season is shaping up well at Ocean Grove Tennis Club. Five out of 15 teams are top of the ladder in their divisions - Sections 3, 9, 18 Red, 20 Red and 21. In section 20 Ocean Grove Red is top with Ocean Grove White second on the ladder. Teams 13, 18 White and 20 White are in the top four. This week all teams will have played against the complete schedule of opposition teams, and will therefore have a good idea of the calibre of competition going forward. Friday night is a busy night at the club. There are three development squads - First Squad, Junior Development and then the Advanced Squad. This is also a good night for parents to come in with queries, as the committee members are usually around preparing for the Saturday competition, and having a cuppa together! In social news, there was a very successful halloween evening at the club on 31 October. Many club members and their children came down to the club for a barbecue dinner and social evening. The children then went trick or treating in groups and returned with bags full of treats. The next social event is the Christmas Party on Saturday 12 December where all members are welcome. There will be a lovely dinner, children activities, a visit from santa and carol singing. This will be a very special night, and one not to be missed! Important Dates 27 November - There is a trivia night at the club for a community work fund-raiser. See flyer on clubroom window for more information. 12 December - Last home and away match before the break and the OGTC Christmas function is held at the club all members welcome, details on clubroom noticeboard. 11-14 January - Warrnambool Country Week Tournament. 30 January - Tennis recommences after Christmas break. Junior Grubbers claim three wins
Young basketball Stars OUR Lady Star of the Sea Primary School Year 6 female students took part in the 2015 School Sport Victoria Basketball State finals at Albert Park this month. The Primary School Basketball Girls School State Championships were held on Tuesday 17 November. The 10 Year 6 girls were undefeated in the lead-up to the State titles and won all their games except for the finals. St Therese Primary School, Kensington, went on to win the State title. It was a great effort by the girls, and Our Lady Star of the Sea Learning Community are very proud of their achievements.
Under 15 OG Red D’Arcy Division Round 4 OG Red versus Queenscliff at Memorial Reserve OG Red won the toss and batted first getting 10 for 204 with Liam Mulllen a fabulous 69 not out supported by Charlie Walter 40 and Will Owen 21. Charlie then starred with the ball getting 3 for 11 from 8 overs and Noah de Bruijn 3 for 13 from 8, Nathan Scarpa 1 for 8 and Noah Cunninham 1 for 7 leaving Queenscliff all out for 119. Under 15 OG White McMahon Division Round 4 OG White versus Highton at Highton OG White won the toss and elected to bat, getting 9 for 141 from 36 overs with Angus Priestley in form with the bat for 41 supported by Bailey Le Maistre 24 and Henry Walsh 23. OG then bowled getting Highton all out for 70 with Angus and Henry getting 2 for 7 and 1 for 6 respectively assisted by Louis Beale with 2 for 8. Under 13 OG Swans Norquay Division Round 4 OG Swans versus Drysdale at Drysdale OG Swans won the toss and decided to have a bat, making 4 for 207 from their 52 overs with Nathan Down, Hayden Ewart and Jack Doyle all retiring not out on 30 and a handy 19 by Zane Branniff. The bowling was exceptional with Nathan Down and Oscar Walter both bowling 6
overs and getting 2 for 3 supported by Will Hart with 2 for 14. Getting Drysdale all out for 178. Under 13 OG Grubbers Norquay Division Round 4 OG Grubbers versus Queenscliff at Queenscliff OG Grubbers batted getting 10 for 133 from their 52 overs and Queenscliff getting 8 for 207 from their overs. Cooper Ward and Fletcher were the stars with the bat getting 34 and 28 retired not out respectively and a solid 17 from Tahj Wirth. Best of the bowlers were Connor Asquith getting 2 for 13 and Toby Gill 1 for 9 and Cody McSween 1 for 13.
Quality win for Cobras UNDER 17s The fourth-placed Ocean Grove/ Collendina Combine made the journey into the King Lloyd Reserve to take on the sixth placed Murgheboluc Cricket Club in this round five, twoday clash. Ocean Grove/Collendina won the toss and elected to bat. Logan Taylor and Ronan Healy opened the batting and got the score to 36 before Healy went for four. Lachlan Hooper joined a dangerous looking Taylor to combine for a 156-run secondwicket partnership when Hooper was dismissed for a well made 60. Sam Walsh then joined Taylor to put on a further 54 runs before Walsh went for 29. Max Sutton and Zach Walter were also solid with 31 and 21 respectively but it was Taylor who was the standout with an incredible 101 retired. His innings consisted of 17 fours and 1 six and was the backbone of the teams eventual score of 4/277 off 55 overs. It would take some catching. A win here would cement the combine at the pointy end of the ladder but on the tiny King Lloyd Reserve, the bowling and fielding would still have to be disciplined even with a great total on the board. James Butteriss and Lachlan Madden opened the bowling and were solid but it was Lachlan Hooper who came on first change to get the initial breakthrough. He eventually took 3/29 off a fine 12 overs. Butteriss took 1/7 off 6 tight overs, Cody Richardson was as reliable as ever with 1/13 off 4 overs. Craig Goodger was also good with an important 2 wickets off his 9 overs. Murgheboluc responded well to a very imposing total and made it to 8/227. A 50-run win is always good but rumour has it fielding practice may be the focus on the training track this week. This win sees the combine head to fourth position on percentage but equal top of the ladder on points. Next week they take on St Joseph’s who sit third in yet another big game. Coaches Long and Walsh will be pleased with the effort so far but there are no easy game in the under seventeen top division. UNDER 13s The Cobras made the journey over the bridge to take on Barwon Heads in this must win two day game. The Under 13 ladder at this stage of the season is very even and every win is vital. Captain Xavier Norman won the toss and sent the Seagulls in. They were solid and made it to 3/87 after day one. The Cobras’ reply was also solid with a fine 4/87. Day two was going to be a cliffhanger between these two evenly-matched teams. Collendina batted first on day two and made it to a final total of 7/163 off 52 overs. Barwon Heads managed to get to 131 before they were dismissed. A great win for the Cobras to propel them into fourth place on the ladder. All bowlers were good with Izaak Terhorst taking 2/1 off his three tight overs, Sam Donegan, Charlie Every and Xavier Norman all took one wicket each. Diesel McNeil took his first ever wicket for the Cobras combining with Tom Gross and finishing with the figures off 1/16 off four overs. The standout with the ball was big opening bowler, Brodie Muscat. He took 2/6 off 3.3 overs. He took his two wickets with his last two balls so this means he will be on a hat-trick when he next bowls. Charlie Every and Izaak Terhorst were great in the field combining for two run outs while Tom Gross took two great catches. Opening batsman Nick Gibbon was sensational with the bat having to be retired on 31. He was well supported by Tom Gross who made a very well compiled and cautious 11 runs at a time when caution was needed in the Cobras innings. Max McLachlan was superb with a very fluent and aggressive 28 runs. Coach Ross Norman will be pleased.

Club Grove cement top spot Compiled by Matt Flapper THE highs and lows of lawn bowls have been the story for the defending Premier Division champions over the last fortnight. On the road to Sebastopol was one of the best performances this season so far when all 16 players responded to the challenge and had to dig deep to record a tough fought 15-shot win. Facing off against last year’s Ballarat Division One champions in round 6 provided the low the Premier team did not need. A determined City Oval side took to the Grove greens like they were their own and straight away had the home side on the back foot. Relentless in their attitude and pressure was certainly a credit to them and a learning curve for the home side. City Oval proved too good in the end taking the match by 10 shots. Over the road on C’Green Division Two continued their run of good form and took to top placed Geelong Cement. With five wins on the trot since its loss at Bannockburn in round one momentum was definitely favouring the home side. With all that said they were up against the current ladder leaders and the winner would either go a game clear or take over that pole position. Dave Mackay, Ray Moloney, Norm Thomas and skipper Warren Davis stamped their author-

ity on the game very early as they set up a commanding 24-3 half-time lead. Overall 85-33 was a massive half-time advantage and one that would set up the game as players resumed after the break. All teams continued their domination as the home side recorded a massive 127-73 win and 18 points which cemented their spot at the top of the table. Davis the main man as his rink cruised to a 41-11 victory which was a fine way to celebrate his 60th Birthday. Bob Nicol, Wendy Gibson, John Hoult and John Aitken ensured the majority of the points were going to Ocean Grove in Division 7. 33-16 winners against Barwon Heads backed up by Keith George 24-14 and Alby Touwslager 27-19 has the sevens at 4 wins from 6 games and well in contention as we approach the halfway mark of the season. Three in a row and Dave Harvey leading the way in the Nines with his team’s 14-shot win against Geelong at Geelong. Supported by Terry Tinker, Mike White and John Hughes the Harvey rink has hit form which covered the narrow loss to Graeme Constable’s side. Overall enough shots to get the majority of the points on offer. Currently sitting top two after a massive home game win against Clifton Springs has the

Midweek Division One team with their eyes set on a top two spot as we approach the half way point of the season. All three rinks were in cruise control as they set about bowling their way to a 114-45 victory. The climb up the ladder in Division two has gained momentum three weeks ago sitting 9th and with the last three wins on the trot they have entered the top four. A massive turn around in form and a renewed confidence among the players now make them a threat in this division. Betty “Sapphire” Wilding, Marianne Rogan, Lorraine Hunt and Val Cook again well in control as they established the teams shot margin with a 26-10 win. Undefeated and flying in the threes with six wins and a draw from seven matches is an amazing start to the season for a promoted team. Winners of Division Four last season they have certainly learnt how to win games. Lyn Stonehouse, Elaine Hager, Bob Poole and Pauline Almond devastating as they marched their way to 35-6 on the scoreboard. With all three rinks locked in battles it was the first major points of the season for Division Five. Loretta Curwood and Judith Bradley both plus 2 and Lorraine Oliver with a draw was enough to record the fives first win of the year. Now a job to back it up next week and make it two from two.

Bronze re-qualification brings quite a crowd UP to 70 keen surf lifesaver participants took part in Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club’s first bronze medallion re-qualification earlier this month. Ocean Grove SLSC president Steve Peatling, who took part in the bronze re-qualification, said it was a fantastic turnout from the club and other nearby surf life saving club members on 8 November. “It was well attended on the day, I think we had numbers of around 70 people,” Peatling said. “The first bronze re-qualification of the season is normally well attended.” Participants applied first aid, conducted tube and rescue water activities and completed a 400 metre swim and prior to the day successfully finished an online test.

Iconic local business Ocean Grove Pizza and Pasta has signed a three-year partnership with the Grubbers from the 2016 season. Regular SLSC patrol season starts OCEAN Grove SLSC legend Dave Renton holds what is probably an unassailable record in surf life saving patrols, having clocked up 50 years without missing a single rostered patrol session. With around 20 patrol members rostered on for each session, it is regulars like Dave Renton who work to maintain the safety of beachgoers all through summer. The regular patrols at Ocean Grove main beach kick off this Saturday 28 November and continue until after the Easter break in 2016. Ocean Grove SLSC president Steve Peatling said the committee had been in planning for volunteer weekend surf patrols to commence since August. “It is our core business (surf patrol),” Peatling told the Voice. “Bill Strachan our Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club Captain, has been preparing for the season for probably the last three or four months and they held their patrol captains’ meeting (this month). “Hopefully we get a nice weekend to start surf patrol and the beach is well attended and we make it all worthwhile.” In the 2014-’15 summer, records show that club patrol members performed 3,702 preventative actions and there was only one incident that required an ambulance. The cooler weather last year resulted in a total of 111,959 visitors to the beach during patrol periods,

DEDICATED Ocean Grove SLSC lifesavers swapped their surf gear for bathers and goggles at Kardinia Pool last week to prepare for the Victorian Endurance Championships. Up to 30 of the club’s elite disciplined young lifesavers have endured a rigorous swim program three mornings a week in the lead-up to the Black Rock based surf carnival on 21 November. Ocean Grove SLSC Head Coach Sonia Kinsey said there were many advantages of pool work compared to lifesaver based training at a surf beach. “Swimming is all the basis of your fitness, so your cardiovascular fitness,” Kinsey said. “Of course swimming is the prime rescue activity, so everyone should be able to swim if they do patrol anyway. “The swimming is everything and it is all about your fitness.” Ocean Grove SLSC won overall honours at the 2014 Victorian Endurance Championships with 113 points to finish ahead of second-placed Half Moon Bay SLSC with 90 points. Kinsey said the 21 November carnival was the start of a busy surf life saving season, and an ideal warm up for Australia Day Open Surf Carnival to be held in Sydney in January. “It is definitely good preparation with all your racing ... you know when you go to Sydney you are racing against the best in Australia because New South Wales and Queensland will be there,” Kinsey said. She said her young enthusiastic group had worked hard over the winter and was looking forward to competing at state based and interstate surf lifesaving competitions. Kinsey praised the ongoing support of parents who helped with travel commute to watch their kids compete. “You find the kids are always really enthused, probably more enthused than anyone else,” she said. “Ocean Grove SLSC has got a fantastic bunch of parents and they are always their to support, so that is a bonus. “The kids are obviously really excited to do some racing ... we are so far behind Queensland and NSW who have already had a few carnivals ... so the kids are pumped to actually do something. “Of course in amongst it, there are some athletes who are really quite talented, but it is getting the group together as a group right from Under 13s all the way up to Masters racing. “It is really all about the team getting together and racing.” Events included a surf boats race, ski race, board race, swim race and run. Age groups that participated included Under 13s, Under 15s, Under 17s, Under 19s, Open and Masters (35+ years). IN other news, Ocean Grove SLSC members took part in Run Geelong on Sunday 22 November. Loyal club volunteers greeted Run Geelong participants at the finishing line with flyer handouts to promote Ocean Grove SLSC’s annual biggest fund-raiser, Rip to River which takes place on Saturday, 2 January. Registrations have opened for the 36th Rip to River event, to enter head to www.oceangroveslsc.asn.au for more information.

Cobras consolidate top four spot COLLENDINA consolidated their BPCA A Grade top-four position courtesy of a resounding victory against Queenscliff at home on November 21. Chasing 228 for victory at the Cobras’ home fortress, the lowly-ranked Queenscliff were all bowled out for only 86 from 46 overs. Collendina had Queenscliff 2/32 from 18 overs in its second innings before play came to an end on day two. Cobra bowler Charlie Lamb, who took 5/17, while youngster Sam Walsh, who claimed 4/46, ripped through the Coutas’ batting line-up. Collendina co-coach Ben Ricardo praised Lamb and Walsh’s efforts with the ball. “Yes, terrific effort from the guys,” Ricardo said. “Charlie (Lamb) led from the front as usual and Sam Walsh was absolute-
ly brilliant taking four wickets. “With a couple of guys still out was great to have such a convincing win and keep pushing our way up the ladder.” Cobra fast bowler Jye Hearps was at his economical best and finished with figures of 0/4 from 10 overs which included six maidens. Collendina will be hoping to continue their winning start when it meets Barrabool in a two-day game at home on Saturday. IN B Grade, Cobra Dean Britt led his side to a 51-run win against Ocean Grove at Ocean Grove. Britt finished with figures of 7/30 from 25.1 overs, a spell that included 15 maidens. Fellow Collendina bowler Mark
Johnston took 2/29 from 21 overs. THE Grubbers are determined to make amends for their round four defeat against reigning A Grade premier Drysdale when they meet Barwon Heads on November 28. Ocean Grove who went into match with a 3-0 record, were thoroughly outplayed in their 98-run loss against the Hawks in a two-day game at Drysdale on November 21. Ocean Grove coach Paul Jubber said his youthful team was enthused about the prospect of facing a winnable game against its battle of the bridge rivals this Saturday. The Seagulls, who lost to Jan Juc on November 21, will also be searching for a muchneeded victory. “The boys are pretty keen to bounce back ... I keep hearing (they are our) arch-rivals,” Jubber told the Voice. “They (Barwon Heads) are our number one opposition ... the boys will be up and about for this week given the rivalry and the history of the two teams.” In pursuit of 241 for victory against Drysdale, the Grubbers lost crucial middle order wickets. Young Grubber opening batsman Jackson Kent continued his consistent season and top-scored with 37, while promising all-rounder Rob Proctor (25) chipped in with late runs. Kent, 4/34 from 12.3 overs, and Proctor who took 2/70
from 17 overs, performed well on day one. Drysdale’s Brendon Sharpe was the star bowler on day two with his figures of 6/40 from 21 overs. Sharpe claimed the vital Ocean Grove scalps of Adam Spiby (11), Corey Buxton (11) and Grubber coach Paul Jubber (8). Jubber praised Sharpe’s heroics with the ball. “Brendon Sharpe took 6/40 and he bowled exceptionally well,” Jubber said. “Their (Drysdale) fielding was pretty good and they were just generally too far good for us.” IN B Grade, Ocean Grove lost to Collendina by 51 runs in their two-day game at home. Chasing 154 for victory, the Grubbers lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 102 from 71.1 overs. Cobra Dean Britt was the star bowler with his figures of 7/30 from 25.1 overs, a spell that included 15 maidens. Ocean Grove middle-order batsman Greg Scarpa top scored with 25 on day two. Collendina were bowled out for 153 on day one. OCEAN Grove’s C Grade two-day game went down to the wire against Jan Juc at Jan Juc Park. The Grubbers who posted a competitive 9/247 from 60 overs on day one, challenged the Sharks late in the game on
day two. The Jan Juc batting pair of John Urgin (95 not out) and a blistering hundred from Troy Hardy (112) took the game away from the Grubbers. Urgin and Hardy combined for a 151-run second wicket partnership stand as the home side posted 7/249 from their 60 overs The Grubbers got back into contest thanks to some individual fielding brilliance from Issac Saunders who took a towering catch at mid-off and created a direct hit run-out. Ocean Grove bowling pair Marcus Wirth took 3/69 from 17 overs, while Billy FoordEnglesman claimed 2/54 from 13 overs. Young Grubber Lachlan Hooper also impressed with 1/37 from 10 overs. IN D Grade, a half-century from Grubber Thomas Kent (53 not out) helped Ocean Grove to a comfortable 55run win over Collendina 1 in their one-day game at Shell Road. Ocean Grove posted 7/159 from 40 overs, while in reply Collendina made 9/104 from 40 overs. Kent also bowled eight overs and finished with figures of 0/7. Jarryn Dower was the leading wicket-taker for Grubbers with 3/10 from eight overs. Continued page 39
