By DANE LILLINGSTONE BEING the CEO of an organisation that is close to $30 million in debt comes with its criticisms but that hasn’t dissuaded Southern Downs Regional Council CEO David Keenan’s vision for the future of the region. Since taking up the position in January, Mr Keenan has overseen the adoption of an unpopular budget with an even more unpopular rate rise as well as a continued reduction in council staff. Mr Keenan explained what he would personally like to see for the future of the Southern Downs. “We’d be leveraging off a strong education sector, have a strong vibrant community, have businesses that are succeeding and continuing to grow, develop an entrepreneurial and can-do attitude about how we seek out to achieve things and we also focus on the fact that we’re an area that specialises in high quality agricultural produce and to build on

that,” he said. “We need to build on the existing industries that are already here and help them expand. If we spend 80 per cent of our time helping those industries here expand, we should get a really good return. The other 20 per cent of the time we need to be trying to attract industries here from other places.” He also pointed out the importance of balancing different age groups in the region. “We need to think about the real people we need to be attracting to the area, which ideally in the medium-term would be young families, who are going to use the schools, who are going to use the infrastructure here and hopefully create employment and support employment here,” he said. “Across the municipality, the average age is going up.” Mr Keenan said managing infrastructure would be council’s biggest problem moving forward.

“The biggest issue for council will be the replacement of infrastructure over the next 10 years,” he said. “That infrastructure specifically will be things such as the water and the waste water or sewer system. They’re probably the two biggest issues for us in the next 10 years, having the capacity to actually fund the replacement of some of the infrastructure which is very, very old.” For all the negativity surrounding financial watch lists and rate rises, Mr Keenan remains positive when asked what he thought of his role so far. “It’s great,” he said. “There’s some challenges there, and obviously they are from a financial perspective and also trying to build up the culture of the organisation. I’ve certainly come at a time when there’s needed to be some hard decisions made around the budget, but some of those processes are starting to demonstrate some

good savings. “ If all goes to plan, the current financial forecast would see council’s debt slashed to around $10 million in 10 years, but Mr Keenan refused to blame previous councils, the economy or amalgamation for the current level of debt. “There is a significant component in there (the current level of debt) for the water to Allora and that’s a really good use of debt because that should pay itself off over a long period of time,” he said. “If someone comes in and says, ’I want to give an extra $10,000 to a community group, there is no pot’, I need to find that from somewhere else in the budget which means something else in the budget needs to be cut. “As everyone knows, there are no reserves. “I think it’s really important for everyone to be positive, if you’re negative it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

07 4661 9835 LIFELINE Warwick has officially welcomed their new office to the Southern Downs after originally opening earlier this year. Their invaluable service will now continue as normal and their office will enable them to focus their staff at a central hub and provide their services to the entire Southern Downs region and out as far as Goondiwinidi. The work they do is underrated but also a terribly important part of the community. Pictured are some of the team at Lifeline at the official opening of the new hub. Families back with a bang WARWICK will host a night of family entertainment on New Year’s Eve with plans for the return of fireworks and the addition of rodeo events. Warwick Show and Rodeo Society organisers met this week to plan and co-ordinate the afternoon and night of activities for families and older people alike. The first fireworks, sponsored by Warwick’s Steele’s Bakery, will be set off close to 9pm with a second display at midnight. The rodeo will include a poddy ride, junior steer rides, junior barrel races then open events including a $1000 bullock ride, barrel race and both a

male and female station buckjump. Organisers are also planning to include a ladies' steer ride with a special trophy buckle which was not won at the Warwick Rodeo. Society president Dr John Kiss said $7000 worth of fireworks would be set off on the night. “The earlier fireworks display will be aimed at kids and families and will probably be the main attraction,” he said. “The midnight fireworks will go off on the stroke of 12, bringing down the curtain on 2015. “The horse gate in Palmerin Street will be open from midday

and campers will be allowed into Evans Paddock (east). Car parking will also be available in Evans Paddock for easier access. The main gate, near the pavilion, will be open from 4pm and we’d like to encourage families with youngsters to come in early for the free entertainment and rides.” Organisers also plan to have a jumping castle and other school-aged kids activities with entry to the showground at a friendly $20 for adults, $40 for families with concessions at a reduced price and kids under 13 free. Riders wishing to enter the rodeo events should contact the show office on 4661 9060.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE A COMMUNITY meeting held at Inglewood on the Oman Ama nuclear storage facility proposal has reaffirmed what a lot of people already knew - people do not want anything nuclear near their homes. The Inglewood Civic Centre played host to the meeting on Wednesday where over 200 people attended included members of the community, local police, television news crews, local politicians, government representatives and industry experts. Many community members were visibly angry that something like this could be happening so close to their homes. “Disasters do happen,” and “Why can’t they go to the desert in the middle of Australia?” were two of the responses that came from local residents in the meeting. One of the recurring concerns raised in the meeting by the community was the valuation of homes that were located near the site and the future economic viability of the region. Head of Resources for the Department of Industry Bruce Wilson said he was adamant there would be no risks with the finalised proposal. “I’ve very confident there won’t be any risk to any health or the environment,” Mr Wilson said. “The license and procedures and regulatory procedures will not allow us to construct or operate or work this facility if

The proposed Oman Ama site is expected to be involved in at least four months of community consultation before a further decision is made. there are any material risks of disease.” However Mr Wilson said while they were confident, nothing could be zero risk. “There’s never such a thing as zero risk however we can be assured and will be assured that the operation and construction of this facility will make any risk as low as reasonable,” he said. “We’re very confident in the long term.” The consultation process will now go on for another 120 days with at least another two or three community meetings. Southern Downs MP and State Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg said he was adamant that nothing would go ahead without community backing. “The Federal Minister has said to me personally that it won’t go ahead here or elsewhere without broad commu-

nity support,” Mr Springborg said. “I think if you looked at this meeting today, people do understand that if we are producing this material for the benefit of the broader community, this material for nuclear medicine and treating cancers, that we do need to do something responsibly about disposing it in a central place. The point to be decided of course is where is that?” The next step in the consultation will be to narrow down the proposed six sites to a final two or three and then commence more critical assessments on the sites including risk management assessments, a safety case, technical evaluations and further community consultation before deciding on a final site towards the end of next year. The current plan is to begin construction of the facility in 2018 with a projection to start operation sometime from 2020.

ONE man has selflessly volunteered his time to make Warwick a cleaner place. Leonard Monaghan has been cleaning rubbish of the streets and roads of Warwick since 2008. "In that time I have removed over 34 tonnes of rubbish" he said. Leonard collects the rubbish by using modified strollers and using them to carry the loads which can sometimes weigh as much as 50 kilograms. "Unfortunately, since strollers are not designed to carry this weight, structural failure of suspension components is rela-

tively common," he said. As he needs these strollers to carry the rubbish, Leonard is asking the community to donate any unused strollers they may have. "The condition of these strollers is not important, indeed those with faded or torn fabric which precludes them from their original purpose would be preferable," he said. Leonard said he doesn't like taking strollers in good condition as does want to pay $5 per stroller to whoever donates. If you would like to help you can contact Leonard on 4667 0041, 0488 504 140 or email

LIFELINE is a service that has been associated with Warwick and the Southern Downs for over 20 years. Their first office in Warwick was opened in 1997 on King Street, and now they have officially opened their new office in Warwick. Senior practitioner with the Personal Helpers and Mentors Service (PHaMs) Terry Pinney said the office would serve as a hub for their services. “This is the first time we’ve had an office where we can co-ordinate the services and that actually has enough space for everybody,” he

said. Lifeline now has offices based in both Warwick and Stanthorpe but their work seeps much deeper into the community. “We don’t work a lot in the office, we meet people in the community, we meet people in their homes, we’ll go anywhere that people need us to be,” Mr Pinney said. Their services cover the Southern Downs and its surrounds including up to Clifton, Wallangarra and out to Goondiwindi. Having first opened in July, there are now eight workers across the PHaMs and Co-ordinated Accom-

modation Support Program available in the office, as well as gambling help and financial counselling services available by appointment. Mr Pinney said that Lifeline did its best to make people comfortable and that people could expect ongoing support from their services. “We have some processes that make it easy,” he said. “We could see them for the first time in a coffee shop or wherever's comfortable. “If they already know someone, who they feel comfortable with, we’ll go with them. Or they can bring a friend, family member or

partner. Whatever works for them, we will do. “We can support people, sometimes they come in a real difficult stage of their life, rock bottom, not always though. We can work with people over quite a long period of time - up to two years or longer. “That enables people to really tell their story and really take time to work out what will make a difference in their lives. “We’re not working in a clinical practice way, we’re working in a support way. We’re really supporting people's recovery journey. “We will walk alongside them.”

Community members at a meeting held at GrainX earlier this year repeatedly stressed their concerns for housing price drops.

Housing price puzzle By DANE LILLINGSTONE RESIDENTS in Allora located near GrainX have continuously worried what the organisation's operations would do to their house values and recent property reports reveal conflicting results. House pricing data obtained from realestate.com. au reveals that the median house price in Allora peaked at $283,000 in 2011 before dropping to $200,000 in 2012 and increasing to$249,000 by the end of 2014. Warwick’s median property price sat at $239,250 in 2011 and jumped to $260,000 by the end of the 2014. However, Allora-based Mayne Real Estate agent Bevan Vanderwolf said the sample size was too small to be accurate. “For median house prices in a market like Allora, it only takes two higher priced ones to sell one year to fluctuate the median,” he said. “House prices are down in Warwick, down in Toowoomba, down everywhere, it’s hard to attribute it to one particular point.”

Data provided by Mayne Real Estate reveals that Allora has gone from a house average of $225,000 at the end of 2011 to $265,000 by September this year. During the same period, Warwick actually dropped from $257,000 to $240,000. Sandy Manson lives directly across from GrainX on Herbert Street and has had her property on the market for seven months and has received little interest. “I’ve had enough,” she said. “They won’t tell us what’s in the chemicals. The truck drivers wear dust masks. They make noise all night and the trucks block our roads.” These are common complains you will find talking to residents of Herbert Street and its surrounds. Despite setting up a consultative committee with GrainX, local residents near the site said there was still a lack of communication of what was happening. Council CEO David Keenan said that high production had meant a high level of ac-

tivity at the site this season. “We’re working terribly hard to make sure that the issues with GrainX are dealt with,” he said. “We also acknowledge this has been an exceptional year in relation to grain production in southeast Queensland, it's huge, it’s the biggest year they’ve ever had. “The other thing we have to keep in mind at the moment is unemployment, and GrainX at the moment is supplying a lot of jobs and it’s important for Allora in relation to employment there, but also right across the agriculture sector as well. “I think wherever you’re living, you need to look around and see what the surrounds are and imagine what it’s going to be like when things are in full operation. It’s the same as people living in close proximity to abattoirs or main roads, there’s going to be noise or there’s going to be a smell.” The consultative committee on GrainX will continue to meet every two months.

POLICE have discovered a large quantity of cannabis after stopping a vehicle on the Cunningham Highway on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1.15pm in Warwick after officers intercepted a four wheel drive and conducted a search of the vehicle. They then located sealed packages concealed beneath the vehicle's floor. Police have reported that as much as 12 kilograms of cannabis was located during the search. It is one of the largest seizures recorded in the region after a similar 10 kilogram seizure in Warwick earlier this year. The value of the drugs is believed to be around $100,000. A 58-year-old Victorian man has been charged with possessing dangerous drugs, supplying dangerous drugs and possessing anything used in the commission of crime. He has been denied bail and will remain behind bars until his appearance in Warwick Magistrates' Court on 29 February.

Connecting people and communities

A real community effort By DANE LILLINGSTONE AFTER being rebranded last year and introducing a medical health centre earlier this year, Clifton Community Health Services is a true example of a whole community effort. It is a community focussed co-operative that encompasses the Clifton Private Hospital, a 23-bed nursing home, 15-bed hostel, eight independent living villas and a brand new medical centre. General manager Brad Jones said it was largely run by and for the community. “We actually have members that are drawn from the community,” he said. “At the moment there are 30 community members who pay an annual fee of $20. From that they elect a volunteer board and eight directors. “They’re ultimately the governance of the organisation, carry out strategic direction, and it’s up to us to carry it out.”

The service itself originated in 1949 and has been servicing the town of Clifton and its surrounds since. Mr Jones said that their services attracted people from a wide range of areas. “If you took a 100km radius around Clifton, you’d find we’re drawing people to both the medical centre and aged care, locally but also from the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane,” he said. The medical centre in particular has proven popular and unlike other areas in the Southern Downs, they completely bulk bill. “Once we opened the medical centre, we got people from Warwick and the other side of Toowoomba, which is good,” he said. “For the medical centre anyone can use our services and it’s bulk billed for everyone. You can ring and make an appointment.” The hospital is private and their aged

Dragway dreams Clifton Community Health Services general manager Brad Jones. care facilities are available to those who’ve had an Aged Care Assessment Team assessment. With 75 employed and six doctors, they are a major employer in Clifton and its surrounds but Mr Jones wanted to stress that although they receive grants and funding, they’re not Queensland Health. “We’re not Queensland Health, we don’t have bucket loads of money,” he said. They also invest in the future of rural health.

Community banks on backing By DANE LILLINGSTONE COMMUNITY organisations in Stanthorpe are expected to benefit most from the opening of the new community bank. The Stanthorpe Regional Community Bank has raised over $750,000 in eight weeks. The bank's prospectus closed with $755,351 in shares issued and now anyone else wishing to buy into the bank will now have to do so through existing shareholders. A new location will be the final step in establishing the bank along with hiring five new employees. Stanthorpe Regional Community Bank board chairman Don Gaske said he expected everything to be finalised within three months. “We started a campaign a bit over two years ago to establish a community bank in Stanthorpe,” he said. “It’s been a lot of work in two and a half years.

Thursday, 26 November, 2015 Page 5

warwick.starcommunity.com.au

“We hope to make an announcement on the new location sometime soon.” The board of directors has been set up with nine local business people responsible for running it. All of the business from the current Bendigo Agency will transition straight over to the new community bank. There are currently 310 community banks in operation around Australia with profits redistributed in the community. Mr Gaske has been in Stanthorpe since he became the bank manager of the ANZ in 1985 and said the community bank had been well supported since the idea was first floated. “Stanthorpe is a very tight knit community and it has been very well supported by locals,” he said. “Of the profits that we generate, 80 per cent will be going back to community organisations. They won’t go to a head office somewhere. We’ll be able to make our de-

Cheryl Pearson and chairman of the Stanthorpe Regional Community Bank board Don Gaske. cisions locally. “We’ll accept requests throughout the year from different organisations that are looking for financial support. We will probably have a grants or sponsorship night. “We anticipate it will be a substantial amount that we’ll be able to put back into our local community.”

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THIS weekend Warwick will host a National Championship event of the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA). The event will be a first for Warwick Dragway and the only time this season ANDRA will host an event in Queensland. Southern Downs Regional Council has hopped on board by committing over $17,000 to Warwick Dragway and the event. The council approved $10,000 toward resurfacing of the track and $4700 in community grants. They will also kick in a further $3000 to sponsor the event and promote the local region. The council's planning and development manager Cecil Barnard said the event was an economic opportunity with national exposure. “The Warwick Dragway at Morgan Park is a favourite destination on the racing calendar in Queensland,” he said. “Southern Downs Regional Council continuously seeks economic development opportunities, and by assisting Warwick Dragway and ANDRA, the Southern Downs is promoted on a national level as an ideal destination not only for motorsport but as a family-friendly place in which to live and do business.” Warwick Dragway vice-president John Loy welcomed the

investment. “We’re over the moon and can’t thank the SDRC enough for their help. This investment will be put to good use to upgrade the facility and allows us to put on a great show,” he said. Over 100 racers are expected to descend on Warwick Dragway for the two-day event. ANDRA business development manager Jennifer Harrison said the council support was a boost for the event and drag racing in the region. “The support shown by the Southern Downs Regional Council is very encouraging and will benefit Warwick Dragway well into the future,” she said. “We will repay their support in kind with Speedweek cameras in town filming the event and putting a spotlight on the Southern Downs area. “It’s shaping up to be a marquee event and we can’t wait to visit the region for the first time.” Round four of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series will feature Competition, Super Stock, Competition Bike, Super Compact, Supercharged Outlaws, Top Sportsman, Modified, Super Sedan, Modified Bike, Super Street, Junior Dragster and Super Gas at Warwick Dragway on 28 and 29 November. The event is expected to air on SBS. 1202704-ACM42-15

WE WISH to compliment Southern Downs Regional Council for the maintenance and care of both Killarney and Warwick cemeteries. As we have family buried in both cemeteries, the effort put into maintaining the grounds is appreciated when visiting these graves. We also wish to acknowledge the friendly and efficient way the council ladies assisted in organising the plaques. John and Gwen Labuschewski, Killarney.

Street-scaping progress! I AM writing this letter as both a business owner and ratepayer. I firstly would like to say I am all for council being fiscally responsible and ensuring they maintain a tight budget. However I am not all for the negative comments attacking the council for preparing plans for improvements to our street-scaping in Stanthorpe. Ratepayers should be aware that a lot of hard work and lobbying by the Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce has got us to this point. I was personally involved with bringing this matter to the table some years back and I am really happy that we now have detailed, costed plans ready to move to the next stage of looking for funding. In life we are all trying to continually improve ourselves, we need to move forwards not backwards and improving the liveability of our town is important for all those who live in, work in and visit Stanthorpe. I wish to commend council on allocating the funds to complete the detailed, costed plans to improve the streetscape of Stanthorpe. Also for the hundreds of people who contributed to the plans providing feedback in the initial stages. Council can now go and look for possible grant funding, the state

and federal governments provide various funding programs to complete local community projects. Often the funding fully covers the cost of the project, without any cost to the applicant. This means that potentially, council may not have to spend any money to complete some of the stages in the plan; rather they would be funded by grants. I understand that a lot of the work that has already been undertaken in the main street came from grants, not at the ratepayers' expense. Unfortunately you cannot apply for most grants if you don’t have detailed plans and costings completed. The projects have to be “shovel ready” before council can apply for a grant to fund the improvements they have in the plans. So this is where we are now! We are almost ready to look for money from grant opportunities, to get working on the various stages. I understand that one of our local community groups has already discussed possibly funding one of the projects in the new plans, so without these plans the beautification of our town would not be moving forward. Well done to council for supporting this project and working with the Chamber of Commerce. I look forward to council actively pursuing grant opportunities to bring these plans to fruition. I also encourage locals to get down to council and consider the projects and provide constructive input to ensure we are all happy with plans that have been proposed. Lucille Jensen, Owner - Pink Poppies Living Creatively, Stanthorpe.

One more gift THIS year as we finish our Christmas shopping, please spare a thought for others. Once you’ve bought a Kris Kringle for a workmate, a quirky gift for your brother-in-law or any of the presents you need for family and friends, con-

sider one more gift for someone who really needs it. One more gift to Red Cross will help ensure an older or isolated person gets a phone call every day to check they’re OK, clean water for a young child in a remote village in Myanmar, or a shower and a meal for a teenager sleeping rough. This Christmas I urge everyone to consider making one more gift to Red Cross. STANTHORPE Heritage Museum has received a boost after being awarded a $5300 federal Community Heritage Grant. John Cowburn from Stanthorpe Historical Society attended a threeday intensive preservation and collection management workshop at the National Library, the National Archives of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra. In brief House fire escape

Behind the ban ON 12 November this year you published a letter written by me condemning Tenterfield Council for their banning of me from holding a voluntary position on Tenterfield’s Council’s Heritage Committee where I am well-known for my history knowledge. I made a statement of my knowledge at a meeting of a progress committee and was suddenly challenged by Mayor Peter Petty. He was called to order by the chairman. As well, the chairman Glen Lamb stated that what I said was correct. It seems the mayor panicked: and as the position was due for renomination the general manager sat on my application for some months before I began to realise something was wrong. I contacted Lotta Jackson who denied any knowledge and blamed the Legume Progress Association for the hold-up. They in turn denied it. I suddenly realised where the problem was. Lotta Jackson the general manager was sending me contradictory letters; which I have retained. My character is very important to me. Jack Clarke, Rivertree.

in supporting the effort to preserve the Stanthorpe Heritage Museum’s collection at the grassroots level. “While the grant provides the funds, the workshop offers the expertise to help us protect our collection and make it accessible while it remains in the local context,” he said. Anyone interested in helping or in becoming a Historical Society member should contact the museum at 12 High Street, Stanthorpe, or by phone on 4681 1711.

A FAMILY on Brook Street received a fright on Saturday night after a fire started in their home. The blaze began in the garage of the house, but also severely damaged the kitchen. Neighbours reported that the family had originally tried to retrieve belongings from the home. Around 7pm firefighters were called and managed to contain the blaze. Investigations will continue into the cause of the fire.

Livestock on the road DO YOU know who to call when there is livestock on the road? Southern Downs Regional Council said that all calls to report livestock on roads should be directed to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) on their 24-hour phone number 13 19 40. If required, TMR will contact council as follows: For stock on council controlled roads, TMR will notify council to attend. For stock on main roads, TMR

· ·

will assess the situation and will contact council’s animal control officers if assistance is required. However it is important that TMR be contacted in the first instance. Warwick police also said that if there was an imminent danger and people believed there was an imminent risk to the safety of people, they should call police first.

League visit TWO legends of rugby league will be coming to Warwick in December. Former internationals and New South Wales State of Origin representatives Bryan Fletcher and Steve Menzies will be appearing at the Warwick RSL on 3 December as part of Christmas with Fletch and Beaver. The night will be a chance for fans to have a meet and greet and also be entertained with the pair recounting stories from their playing days. If anyone’s seen Fletch and Hindy on television, then they know there will be more than a few laughs to be had on the night. Proceeds on the night will go towards Warwick and District Junior Rugby League.

Warwick RSL administration manager David Burgess said it will be a fun night for all involved. Warwick RSL administration manager David Burgess said it was something they would look to continue annually. “We want to do a sportsman dinner once a year and support

different junior sporting clubs in the district each time we do it and spread it all around,” he said. “It’s going to be a night of fun entertainment and good night out to try and raise as much money as we can for Warwick junior rugby league.” The two players will be bringing a piece of memorabilia each that will be donated and given back to charity along with raffles, auctions, table bingo and prizes. Justin Karcher will keep the crowds warmed up as the MC for the night. Tickets are $55 and can be purchased from the RSL until they sell out. The price includes a two-course meal and drinks package. $5 from each ticket sold will go towards supporting junior rugby league.

Casey’s tips

Good, bad, and ugly response “GOOD” drivers turn bad when faced with poor driver etiquette, according to QUT research which has found many motorists are creating the problem they hate by responding aggressively to rudeness on the roads. Lauren Shaw, from QUT’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland(CARRSQ), said there was a widespread belief among drivers that their own on-road performance was good, and they expected other people’s driving behaviour to be poor. “It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when drivers respond aggressively to behaviour they think is bad,“ she said.

“My studies found common on-road events that trigger driver aggression from ’good’ drivers were actions like poor merging, cutting off behaviours and tailgating. “Although these behaviours are all dangerous, the reason they aroused anger was because the receiving driver thought it to be rude, inconsiderate and disrespectful. The offending driver had violated appropriate driver etiquette.“ Ms Shaw said typical responses from ’good’ but angered drivers, were to sound their horn, flash their lights or verbally vent their frustration. She said the underlying motivation for these behaviours was to let drivers know they had be-

haved poorly, so that they would not repeat the behaviour in future. “It’s a contradiction. Good drivers are using rude and unpleasant bad behaviour to teach other drivers how to be better drivers,” she said. “All this does to the driver on the receiving end of the aggressive act is reinforce their own belief that the behaviour of other drivers is bad.“ Ms Shaw said other research had also shown that expecting something to happen raises the likelihood that it will happen. “In this context, drivers become more alert to instances of bad driver behaviour that meet this expectation,” she said. She said almost 40 per cent of drivers surveyed reported verbally venting their frustrations through actions such as name calling and while this might seem physically harmless, research had shown yelling increased driver danger. “When drivers scream and shout they don’t let

the negativity go and it actually increases negative emotions and that increases crash risk,” Ms Shaw said. She said the good news was not all drivers reacted aggressively to poor etiquette. “There are definitely those drivers who feel a level of superiority and perceive themselves as better than the offending motorists, and therefore refuse to respond aggressively,” she said. “These drivers feel that an aggressive response would be lowering their driving standards to that of the bad driver.” Ms Shaw’s study focused on looking at the thought processes that promote driver aggression rather than the personality traits that make drivers behave aggressively. “Driver aggression cannot be blamed on gender or age, it is widespread and linked to how we think about the behaviour of others on the road,” she said.

Local Sport Casey’s tips

Testing time for the pink ball The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

ALL cricket fans, players and officials around the world are eagerly anticipating this week’s Adelaide Test which gets under way on Friday. It marks the biggest change cricket since the Packer war - and perhaps the biggest ever change in Test Cricket - a move to a day/night Test match. Response to the concept has been positive from supporters and ticket sales appear to be good. Of course bums on seats is great but how the game actually pans out will be the biggest factor. The new especially designed Pink Kookaburra ball has met with mixed reviews during trials from bowlers batsmen and fielders. Experts believe it will suit the spinners and probably give the bowlers the edge. Not a bad thing I think - the last two wickets look to have been a batsman’s paradise and bowler’s nightmare. Of course this week marks the anniversary of the death of Phil Hughes and that event is sure to be on the minds of many of the players who take to the field on Friday night. It is an event that perhaps had a more profound effect on our cricketers than the outpouring of grief we witnessed last year. Recently retired Mitchell Johnson has spoken of the effect that it had on him personally, while in Michael Clarke’s recently released book he also speaks of the impact and how it changed his love of the game. Clarke’s book of course has reignited the war of words between the former Aussie skipper and former Australian coach John Buchanan. Can’t see Chrissy cards being exchanged again this year. Unfortunately I expect to have a fair degree of difficulty when it comes to watching this week’s historic test and it has little to do with a pink ball and a level of colour blindness. Along with a small group of Stanthorpe Rotarians and a few corralled helpers I am in Niayala, Fiji working on a Rotary project to deliver running water to the Niayala High School. Anyone who knows me well, will now be doubled up with laughter given my well documented prowess with any type of tool but I can confirm that I have an “A” grade ticket in passing tools - but only if someone explains what they want. Bula from Fiji - enjoy the Test. - Casey ANOTHER FIRST FOR DRAGWAY WARWICK Dragway notches up another first this weekend when ANDRA Drag Racing hits the eight mile track with the running of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series. After events in Sydney and Portland, the series heads to Queensland for the first and only time this season, giving local racers an opportunity to pick up championship points. The much-anticipated event has attracted over 100 entries from all points. Competitors are expected from as far afield as Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. A contingent of up to ten local competitors including Matt Loy are expected to take part in this weekend’s racing. Supercharged Outlaws racer and Gatton identity Christine Steffens believes there has never been a better time for regional tracks and fans as the series reaches more venues than ever before. Steffens will be racing in the Supercharged Outlaws category alongside Super Comp, Competition Bike, Top Sportsman, Modified, Super Sedan, Modified Bike, Super Street, Junior Dragster and Super Gas when the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series visits Warwick Dragway this Saturday and Sunday. Speaking recently, she was full of praise for the recent Warwick Dragfest. “There were a number of first timers at Dragfest that told me they will be back for the November 28-29 meeting and everybody I spoke to had a great time. The grandstands have shade covers

Some of the action you can expect this weekend at Warwick Dragway.

A Pearl Cichlid - lovely in your fish tank or aquarium but not in our waterways.

It is one year since cricketers across Australia "Put a Bat Out" for Phil Hughes - he will be remembered this week at the start of the Adelaide Test.

A Tilapia fish pictured with eggs in its mouth - these pests should be carefully destroyed if caught.

to keep the sun off the spectators on those warm summer Queensland days and there are plenty of facilities for spectators to buy food and drinks or BYO picnic and sit on the grass on the hill,” she said. "Warwick Dragway itself was as good, if not better, to run on Dragfest than the Winternationals track, so you know you can give it your best shot and go for a number. We actually put more into it than we had at the Winters as we had to take horsepower out and try and get down Willowbank albeit unsuccessfully. “Racing in Group Two - Four isn’t just about driving the car, it is about doing the numbers as you are going down the track as well. You have to know your car and what it does on each pass because of the dial ins/handicaps rule in Group Three and Four, just as records/indexes rule in Group Two. "If we go too fast in Group Three and Four we normally lose so when you need to cut awesome lights, run on your handicap and also beat the racer in the other lane over the finish line - but not by too much in case you breakout - you have a lot going through the brain while trying to drive a car going more than 200 m/ph. “Racing over the eighth mile condenses this and you have to think that much faster and sort it that much quicker. It doesn’t matter what car I drive as they all have their own requirements and it is a sense of achievement when I get it right and depressing when I get it wrong.” At the completion of the event this weekend, racing will return to Victoria. For more information regarding this weekend’s event, visit the website visit www.warwickdragway.com THOMPSON IN FORM ANDREW Thompson lapped the field with 44 points in the single stableford competition at the Wallangarra Golf Club on Saturday. Peter Butler snatched second spot after playing an honest

round relegating Scott Williams to third spot. Thompson also pocketed the only pin shot of the day on hole three. It is another busy weekend at the 'Garra. Brendan McMillan sponsors a stroke event on Saturday and Sunday is the Wallangarra Open 4BBB sponsored by Sexton and Green. Tee off for this event is 9am Qld time. The cost of $25 per person includes lunch - it is sure to be another great day on the 'Garra greens. FISH FISH SET FOR RELEASE IT IS that time of year when the Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association begin their stocking season. The Association has already placed a fingerling order with Nick Donges Granite Belt Fish Hatchery at Severnlea. It is anticipated that this season Leslie Dam will be stocked with 5000 Murray Cod, 100,000 Golden Perch and 5000 Silver Perch. While these are healthy quantities, an additional $20,000 funding last season allowed for significantly higher release numbers at Leslie Dam. Last season 32,987 Murray Cod; 220,870 Golden Perch and 15,000 Silver Perch were introduced. Connolly Dam will receive 500 Murray Cod, 10,000 Golden Perch and 1500 Silver Perch. There will also be 2000 Murray Cod, 20,000 Golden Perch and 1500 Silver Perch released into the Condamine River. As is the normal practice, the Murray Cod fingerlings will be the first to be delivered around New Year’s Day with the Golden and Silver Perch in late January and February. The releases will ensure happy fisherpersons well into the future. Warwick fish stocking group has also installed 131 pieces of structure into the Condamine River over the last two years and further installations are planned. Please remember to buy your fishing permit for Leslie and Connolly Dams as reminders are not sent out by post now. Fishing in our rivers systems remains free. The closed season for Murray

Cod in the rivers ends on 30 November. WATTS A WINNER A STEADY round on the Stanthorpe course saw Bob Watts returned to the winner’s box last Saturday. Watts was out with 22 points and back with 21 to return a round of 43 points - a three point advantage over runner-up Rino Piovesan with 40 points. The ladies event was much a closer event. Linda Kelly scored 37 points to just edge out Nikki Rossow 36 points and claim a win. Stan Spencer had a rare foray onto the course and went away with the balls for his pin shot at 3/12 and the pro-pin at 1/10. Dylan Barraclough also managed a double, taking the pin shot at 17 and the pro-pin at 5/18. Richard Reardon held the remaining pro-pin at 9/18. Hannah Reeves claimed the ladies pin at 3/12 and Lyn Ludlow held best approach at 17. In the run down, it was a ball to Ron Batterham and Lyle Bryant with 39 points and Christine Welstead with 36 points. Eric McLellan sponsored the day. A reminder to all members and friends that following this Saturday’s event the club will hold its Christmas barbecue where the 'Golfer of the Year’ awards will be announced. The men’s event is sponsored by Apple and Grape Motel and the ladies event is sponsored by Out & About Fashions. Club members are awarded points for each Saturday competition played, the better the score the higher the points. There have been some close finishes over the past few years and spies tell us this year is shaping up as much the same. The game on Saturday is a medley 4BBB Stableford played for the Kev Delaney Memorial and is sponsored by the Delaney family. There will be a shotgun start at 11.45am with registration by 11.30am. The time sheet for the event is on the board at the club. DONALD DAYS IT WAS another busy hand gun competition weekend at the Inglewood SSAA with events held on Saturday and Sunday. Peter Jones from Texas designed and manufactured new portable stands for the members which were very much appreciated in last weekend’s heat. Competitors were able to shoot from a shaded area. Perhaps that shaded area may have contributed to the successful weekend Tom Donald enjoyed but we will really never know. On Saturday, Tom Donald was the winner of the two events combined Rimfire ahead of Michael Dudgeon and Scott Jones. Proving it was no fluke on Saturday, Donald backed up the performance to take out the same event on Sunday. This time relegating Peter Jones to second place and another Dudgeon (Stephanie) picked up third placing. When you are in the winning zone why not keep on winning must have been Donald’s mantra, because he also backed up those performances with a win in Sunday’s Revolver centrefire events. In this event he out-scored Iain Bowen and Wal Shepherd. This Sunday the club is hosting members of the Texas Pony Club competing in their shooting event of the annual pentathlon competition. Members are asked to lend their assistance in staging the event. The Annual Christmas shoot has been set down for Sunday 13 December. Cost is $10 per head for all members and includes food, 25 rounds clay target ammo and 50 rounds of .22 for those competing in our shoot. Cold venison and salad is on the menu. Visitors are most welcome and they can compete as non-members at a cost of $20 per competitor. The meal only is $10 per visitor with juniors under 14 free. PUBLIC MEETING - PEST FISH FISH scientist Greg Ringwood is hosting a public meeting at the Warwick Golf Club today, Thursday 26 November at 4pm. Mr Ringwood will be discussing the pest fish, Tilapia and others which could potentially end up in the Condamine River system and he will outline the damage they can do to our waterways and impoundments. Whether you are a serious angler or only pick up a rod and reel occasionally this is a meeting you should attend and it is open to all members of the public.

Local Sport It has been 18 months since a pearl cichlid (Geophagus braziliensis) was captured in the Condamine River at Warwick. The good news is that no more pearl cichlids have been found however members of the public cannot be complacent. This is not time to let your guard down as native fish like the mighty Murray Cod still need help to recover. The meeting will look at the risks pest fish pose to the Condamine Catchment and the increasing threat Tilapia pose to the MurrayDarling Basin. There will be discussion on how to restore native fish populations and how healthy native fish populations help prevent pest fish becoming established. There are several key points members of the public can all follow to help our native fish: Most importantly do not dump aquarium fish into the river as your pets could easily become pests; Always give unwanted aquarium fish to a friend or the pet shop. Do not bring tilapia back into the MurrayDarling Basin dead or alive. Tilapia can carry their eggs and babies alive in their mouths; If you catch a non-native fish kill it and dispose of it away from the river, preferably in a rubbish bin; Always report unusual fish captures or sightings to Fisheries Queensland. Mr Ringwood will also present monitoring results for habitat restoration projects. Native fish provide important social, cultural and economic values to the local Warwick community. Recreational fishing delivers a significant financial contribution to the district. It is estimated that Leslie Dam contributes $3.38m per year and Connolly Dam $0.36m per year to the local economy through recreational fishing. MAKING A SPLASH WARWICK youngster Henry Reardon has been busy making a splash at the the Pacific School Games in Adelaide. The Assumption College student won gold as a member of the Queensland 200m AWD medley relay. Swimming the final freestyle leg of the relay the team was in third place when Reardon left the blocks but he reeled in the leaders to take gold. He was back in action later in the week in the 50m butterfly event picking up a bronze medal and has more events later in the week.

Competitors enjoying the new shaded pistol bays at Inglewood SSAA last weekend. OLDIES LEADING THE FIELD PETER Senior set the golfing world back on its heels a little earlier this week when at the age of 56 he won his third Australian Masters, beating a flock of young things and becoming the oldest golfer to take the title. It seems senior moments are not restricted to the majors. At the Warwick Golf Club presentation evening one of Warwick’s finest golfers Ken Burley proved that in a game where numbers matter - age is but another number. The octogenarian, a trifling 87 with over half a century of golf experience under his belt, picked up five trophies during the evening and added them to the secretary’s pen he won earlier in the season. Burley won the most honour board events in one year at the club - as all six trophies were for honour board events. His wins included the Gray Cup for overall winner in Single Handicap Matchplay - his fifth win in the event. He also took out the C Grade Matchplay event and the Lane Cup - 4BBB Handicap Matchplay with partner and wife Marge - an event they have won three times. In the Coe Cup he was partnered by Con Seibel and they proved a force to be reckoned with. It is the eighth time

Action on the range at Inglewood.

Burley has his name on that trophy and on most occasions with playing partner Seibel. WINS FOR WHEATVALE AND ANIMALS WHEATVALE spin bowlers helped their side to a six wicket win over Allora last weekend at the game played in Allora. Allora opened the batting but were restricted to 144 by the bowling attack. Wheatvale spin bowler Cameron finished with 3/30 off his eight overs. Carter Bilbrough, Alex Fessey and Fergus Hume contributed with two wickets apiece in a fine bowling performance. Allora batsman Luke Cullen top scored with 33. Chasing the moderate total of 144 Wheatvale always looked to be in control Billborough followed up his good performance with the ball to top score with 55. Brenan Malone was unbeaten on 49 as his side claimed a comfortable victory. Allora bowlers Nick Morris and Sean Bryson each picked up two wickets. Sovereign Animals grabbed the points in their game against Warwick Hotel Colts at Slade Park. Animals had first use of the wicket. Best batting performances came from Tim Drennert (30) and Tony Munro (20). Michael Coleman took two wickets in two balls for Colts to dismiss the last batsman after Lachlan Gross had finished with the good figures of 3/23.

Colts began their innings with plenty of fire and intent. A solid partnership developed between opener Goff Thorley and Nick Inmon before Thorley was dismissed, caught off a delivery from Glenn Doyle. It triggered a collapse as Doyle ripped through the batting line up to finish with 4/9 from seven overs. He was well supported by Munro 3/24 and Caleb Kind who took 2/20 from his six overs on debut. Colts failed to recover from the bowling onslaught and animals had a 34 run victory. RSL FIRE UP IN HEAT IN THE Stanthorpe cricket fixtures last weekend RSL showed they are going to be a force to be reckoned with this season. They shrugged off the stifling conditions to post a comprehensive win over Wanderers. After winning the toss Wanderers elected to bat first. At 3/128 the Wanderers top order had set a good platform to build on but under the powerful RSL bowling attack the middle and lower batting order collapsed to be all out for 145 in only the 33rd over. RSL have an intimidating bowling attack and their bowlers were on fire despite the sultry conditions. Anthony DiBella took three wickets; Ross Lupton two while Lihou was on a hat-trick when the Wanderers’ innings closed. Conditions were hot and the RSL batsmen had obviously opted for a short stay in the middle. In an awesome display of big hitting, they smashed their way to the required total on 13 overs. Sam Dowie smashed 91 not out in his first game this season and Duane Lihou added a quick first 43 to guide their team to another win and more bonus points. SOUTHS SMASH TENTERFIELD ON THE CF White Oval, Tenterfield found themslves dismissed for a mere 69 runs after 17 overs in their game against Souths. South’s bowling line up ripped through Tenterfield. Danny Folkers helped his season bowling averages with figures of 5/8 from only four overs. In reply, Souths needed only 12 overs to comfortably reach the required target; Folkers made a day of it by scoring 34 not out off the bat. Representative cricket returns this weekend. On Sunday, Stanthorpe will host Warwick in both Davis and Mitchell Shield and Central Downs playing Lockyer in the Mitchell Shield. The second round of T20 fixture competition will be played in Stanthorpe on Saturday due to the rep games.
