Forgotten workers’ transition struggle By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
Sisters fight mystery bug PAGE 3
They are Geelong’s forgotten workers who feel like they have fallen between the cracks. While politicians trumpet multi-million dollar grants for Geelong companies to boost innovation, former Alcoa workers feel left in the lurch. Three ex-Alcoa employees revealed their experiences to the Indy since the aluminium smelter closed in December. Leopold’s Kel Brewer, 54, Corio’s Brett Noonan, 54, and Lovely Banks’ Garry Holmyard, 57, each spent many years at the 50-year-old plant.
“We’ve struggled since Point Henry closed,” Kel said. “We’ve all struggled.” The three recognised that the face of Geelong’s workforce was changing but rued being left behind in a transitioning economy. Only one, Garry, had ongoing work - as a casual brick cleaner for Simonds Homes. Kel had found occasional casual work but Brett, still dealing with injuries he said were a legacy of his tough work at Point Henry, had remained jobless. “We’re not the only ones,” Brett said.
“We still talk to a lot of mates from Alcoa. A lot of them are just sitting at home getting depressed.” The three agreed that replacing full-time work with courses was not enough. “I’ve done lots of courses but lots of other blokes are all doing the same thing,” Kel pointed out. “Everyone from Alcoa is doing the same thing because that’s all that’s available. “But I haven’t studied for years and I admit I struggled with it.” Continued page 14

Sisters’ mystery disease baffles doctors, experts By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN An unknown genetic disease affecting the livers and kidneys of two Inverleigh sisters has baffled doctors worldwide. Jenna and Jayda Conci have been through endless operations and procedures and had DNA, skin, and liver samples sent overseas in an unsuccessful attempt to find a diagnosis. Their mother, Rebecca, said she was at her wits’ end as she watched her daughters deteriorate almost daily. “Jenna is now in full liver failure and has severely damaged kidneys,” Ms Conci said. “She’s become so malnourished from her body no longer being able to absorb foods that she cannot walk properly. “Coming from being the fastest in the class to needing help to get out of bed is heartbreaking for this nine year-old. “Jayda has just turned seven and is watching everything that her big sister is going through while wondering how long it will be until she’s in the exact same place.” Inverleigh and Geelong communities have rallied around the family, organising a fundraising day at Inverleigh Sporting Complex on Sunday. Ms Conci wrote in a blog on her photography business website that the girls suffered side effects including flash burns to their eyes. “One of the most distressing and inexplicable side effects of the unknown condition is that the girls are extremely photosensitive to the point that their eyes burn from the reflection of surfaces such as water, sand and concrete. “Any parent’s reaction first is sudden heartache, the complete overwhelming feeling of absolute uselessness and then pain. “Pain for the child, pain for her siblings, and pain from deep within.” Ms Conci said she and husband Jason had planned a round-Australia trip with the girls but “well-meaning” doctors had advised them to stay home. “Three months later Jenna could no longer walk properly, hundreds of lesions had grown in her liver and her skin and eyes had gone so yellow that you couldn’t look at her without knowing how unwell she was. “She needs constant blood products for her liver, loads of medication, and electrolytes for her kidneys. “She’s now being tube fed through the nose and chest to help her stay as strong as possible. She was admitted into emergency on 7 July and has not come home.” Jenna had a liver transplant but the new organ is failing. Doctors are unsure whether her body is rejecting it or the disease is attacking the liver. Ms Conci is working on a personal project exploring the emotional complexities of living with an undiagnosed disease. As part of a worldwide foundation Syndromes Without A Name (SWAN), she is producing photos for a calendar and has a book planned to help raise awareness and funds for further research to

In Brief Mum ‘murdered’ US police are investigating the shooting death of a Geelong woman in an apparent murder-suicide in Florida. Mother-oftwo Monique Denahy, 49, was found dead with partner Daniel Millner in a gated community on the weekend, federal MP Sarah Henderson told Parliament this week.
Region buffeted Strong wind warnings continued yesterday for Geelong coastal waters after dry, hot weather then rainy squalls swept the region. State Emergency Service was called to a number of fallen tree incidents, while the CFA attended a grass fire off Horeshoe Bend Rd near Torquay.
Rig coming A Bass Strait oil rig 51 metres high will make the waters off Portarlington its home for the next fortnight, according to Corio Bay’s harbour master. Dilip Abraham said a 200-metre exclusion zone would be in place around West Telesto, due to arrive this weekend, as it awaited its transfer to Singapore.
Disease jobs A $6.1m centre to study deadly infectious diseases will create 137 jobs in Geelong after officially opening this week, a senior federal MP has announced. The Geelong Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Hub would provide an “important economic boost” to the city, said assistant secretary to the deputy prime minister Michael McCormack.
TRAGIC: Jayda and third sister Rivvah visit Jenna in hospital.
Maternity boost More than 11,500 participants raised $334,865 for Geelong’s public maternity day assessment unit at Run Geelong on the weekend, according to organisers. Maternity unit manager Maree Dell said the money would help provide facilities for women and babies experiencing complications or emergencies during pregnancy.
Men overturned Two men had a lucky escape after their kayaks overturned in strong winds at Point Wilson in Corio Bay’s outer-harbour on Wednesday night. Barking dogs alerted a nearby resident, who called emergency services, but both men managed to reach shore where paramedics checked their condition.

Grave tower in appeal to VCAT By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
DRAMA: Mark Mutzelburg and Riley Redford at Eastern Beach after Wednesday's rescue of a drowning boy in storm-force wind. (ALANA MITCHRLSON)
Teens defy storm, waves in Eastern Beach rescue By ALANA MITCHELSON A beach outing with friends after exams turned into a heartracing rescue mission for a group of 10 teenagers in Geelong this week. The 16-year-olds were at Eastern Beach when they spotted a boy drowning in rough water amid 100km/h winds about 12.30pm Wednesday. Corio’s Riley Redford said he thought the boy was OK when he entered the swimming enclosure but realised minutes later that he was struggling to keep afloat. “He was pretty far away, on the opposite side of the enclosure to us, close to the lap pool near the edge of the bay,” Riley told the Indy. “I’m not a swimmer, so I yelled out to my friend, Mark, to ask the boy if he needed help. “When we ran along the jetty to get closer to him, he tilted his head up, looked really distressed and started screaming out.” Riley’s friend Mark Mutzelburg of Bannockburn jumped into the choppy water and
swam out to the boy. “The water was really choppy and the strong winds made it hard to hear,” Riley said. “In trying to keep the boy above water, Mark kept being sent under the waves because the conditions were so bad.” Riley said another friend, Frankie Pelle, also jumped in to help. The pair tried to take the boy ashore but struggled to swim against a strong current, so they decided to lift him onto a pontoon in the centre of Eastern Beach’s swimming enclosure. The boy hit his head as the waves pushed him under the pontoon before the teenagers lifted him to safety. Mark and Frankie then collapsed, so exhausted they were unable to stand. The teenagers said the boy looked unwell and told them he felt a seizure coming on. Riley called an ambulance at 12.53pm, which arrived about 10 minutes later. Mark, Frankie and other teenagers sat with the
boy on the pontoon for more than an hour, keeping him calm and still. SES southwest duty officer Ian Carlton said his team, the coast guard and police attended. “It was going to take us time to get a rescue boat out to them, so an air ambulance was called to the scene,” Mr Carlton said. “The choppy water, with waves well over half a metre, made it difficult for the boat, so a paramedic was lowered onto the pontoon from above and stabilised the boy. He was sitting up but not talking much. “About 15 minutes later we were able to transfer him into the boat to bring him ashore and he was sent to hospital.” Mark said the boy looked better before leaving in the ambulance but the situation could have easily ended badly. “If we had tried to bring him ashore we wouldn’t have made it. We would’ve all drowned the waves and current were that bad.”

A Geelong council decision to knock back a mobile phone tower in Western Cemetery is headed for the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Telstra area general manager Duane Dalton said the decision to refuse a planning permit for a mobile base station in Herne Hill was disappointing. “The tower was planned in response to continuing growth and demand in the area,” Mr Dalton said. “Telstra conducted extensive consultation with concerned local residents and parties and has made every effort to mitigate any impacts that may have arisen from the presence of the tower. “As we believe this particular location is the most suitable in the area to provide coverage to the most number of people, we will be pursuing the matter through VCAT.” Councillors rejected Telstra’s proposed tower on heritage grounds. A council planning meeting last week decided the phone tower would have “an unacceptable impact on the heritage values of the Western Cemetery as a result of its visual impact”. The panel of councillors decided the tower was not sited or designed to be sensitive to the cemetery. Help Herne Hill community group’s Jonathan Connor said residents and people with family buried in the cemetery had made impassioned objections to the plan. The Indy reported in September that residents planned to topple the tower application after Geelong Cemeteries Trust signed an agreement with Telstra to lease a section of the cemetery to install a 37.5m pole. Mr Connor said residents wanted the
Another head for axed body A new boss will run Bellarine Bayside Committee of Management from January after its previous leadership was sacked last February. John Nankervis would bring a background in park management and town planning to the foreshore body, said chair Diane James. Mr Nankervis was in Parks Victoria's senior management for more than 25 years and was recently City of Whittlesea’s sustainability manager, she said. State Environment Minister Lisa Neville sacked the previous committee over concerns about a “lack of engagement” and “the management of the foreshore”.

Double Take AFL draft watchers were keenly awaiting the selections at both ends of the spectrum when clubs revealed their picks on Tuesday night. Apart from the expected interest in who would be named number one which turned out to be entirely predictable - attention switched to whether Wylie Buzza would become an AFL name to remember. Geelong duly delivered, selecting Queenslander Wylie with pick 69, to the glee of commentators. Now the acid will be on his new Cats team mates to come up with the ideal nickname.

Family turkey win Three generations of Highton’s Watson family have joined forces to win a tasty turkey for Christmas lunch. They scoured the pages of last week’s Indy to help make Anthony Watson one of the five winners in the inaugural Talkin’ Turkey competition. Anthony called on family resources to find the turkeys, knowing that dozens of eyes were better than two. “I put grandma on it and the kids as well,” he said. They found the turkeys in advertisements for The Joker Shoppe, Scooters Australia, Routleys, Camper Trailers Geelong and Larko’s.
FIND ME: Five of these blokes are hidden in the ads of today's paper.
Entrants have to find turkey icons hidden in five adverts to go into the draw. The five winners weekly each receive a free turkey from the Indy and Corio’s A Cut Above butcher shop. The five-week competition began last Friday and finishes
with the 18 December edition. Entrants can identify as few or as many adverts with turkeys as they like but entries with all five are prioritised for the draw. Indy managing editor Tony Galpin was surprised that more than 50 entrants found all five turkeys last week. “Some of the turkeys were extremely well hidden, such as in the camper trailers ad. “Well done to all the entrants who found them all.” How to enter: email indy@ geelongindy.com.au; message facebook.com/GeelongIndy; or phone 5249 6700. Include the entrant’s name and contact phone number.
The AFL still has some distance to go to catch up with the unusual names spread across America’s National Football League, though. Vontaze Burfict, Elvis Dumervil, Captain Munnerlyn, Fair Hooker, Webster Slaughter, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Barkevius Mingo and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix are just a few. Love to hear what Dennis Cometti would make of some of those. Mind you, the NFL doesn’t have a lock on unusual names. In fact, regional Australia was right up there as well a generation or two ago. Double Take fondly remembers dear old mum once recounting the names of childhood friends from her early days in the state’s northwest. She rattled them off one by one until a young Double Take couldn’t help snorting in delight at Ophelia Dickie. “We didn’t think that way back then,“ mum explained, blushing lightly. Hopefully young Ophelia grew up to marry into a less suggestively-named family, like the Paynes.

Ted to the rescue of Otway quolls By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A dog rescued from Geelong’s animal pound has become the pride of the Otways after making a crucial ecological find last week. Detection dog Ted, along with owner Lizzie Corke, discovered wild quoll scat in the Cumberland Valley of the Great Otway National Park. Tiger quolls are highly endangered and evidence of their presence in the Otways was only rediscovered in 2012. Ms Corke, also chief executive of Cape Otway’s Conservation Ecology Centre, said the discovery was important because evidence of tiger quolls was so difficult to find. “Ted was so proud of himself when he made the find - he knew it was momentous, she said. Ted is a member of Otways Conservation Dogs, a team of owners and canines that are on a mission to help protect the endangered tiger quoll from extinction. “The program involves a team of community volunteers working with their own dogs across a wide range of breeds, trained to work with minimal environmental impact to detect scats (droppings) of the endangered species. “These scats have the potential to provide vital information to ecologists, significantly assisting conservation efforts. “Finding evidence of tiger quolls is very challenging. Since the species’ rediscovery only four confirmations have been made and this has been far and wide across the region. Ms Corke said Ted was adopted two years ago as a family pet after being found wandering the streets of Geelong and ending up with Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS). “He was in pretty bad condition and very scared. It took a long time for him to realise the world wasn’t going to be bad to him. “But now he’s very confident and comfortable with his surrounds and he’s turned out to be an incredible detection dog.

“It’s a team effort rather than direction. Dogs with noses contribute to the conversation. Conservation and research manager Dr Jack Pascoe said Ted loved being a detection dog. “He works tirelessly in difficult terrain and is

A balcony extends from the northern side of the library, overlooking central Geelong with the bay in the distance. Geelong Regional Libraries chief Patti Manolis said the intent was to maximise the view of Johnstone Park. Fundraiser for new Roslyn PS project By ALANA MITCHELSON A fundraiser night this weekend will help rebuild a Belmont primary school. Businesses and community groups have already donated $2500 for Rosyln Primary School’s new front building to give the school a fresh face. Principal Mary Hutchison said State Government money would fund the rebuild but fail to cover additional costs of furnishings, landscaping and other design elements. “We’re very blessed to have the support of the community and local businesses. It’s great to see people giving back to their local school,” Ms Hutchison said. “This extra kitty will really help us incorporate our school’s strong science focus. “We intend to have big glass panels detailed with life-size diagrams of dinosaurs and other animals. “It will also allow us to get higher-quality furnishings, blinds and heating.” School parent Vin Handley has invited celebrities including Australian Diamonds netballer Eloise Southby, Geelong Cats’ Tom Lonergan and comedian Pete Flaherty as guest speakers. The evening would also include silent and 8 GEELONG INDY Friday, 27 November, 2015

Geelong’s new library and heritage centre opened last weekend, with local bibliophiles and the plain curious pouring in and out over the past week. The ARM Architecture team behind the $45.5 million project’s unique design were also responsible for other notable structures across Australia including Shrine Galleries of Remembrance, Hamer Hall, National Museum of Australia and Perth Arena. Architecture team technical director Wayne Sanderson said many traditional concepts influenced the library’s exterior design. “It was our contemporary interpretation of that classic idea of important buildings being characterised by a dome-shaped top, coupled with the surrounding gardens of reflection,“ Mr Sanderson said. “The glass panels present a stalagmite-like appearance and serve as the crystal entrance to the ‘cave’, a concept which draws reference to reflection, learning and contemplation. “It’s also designed to naturally project the colours of light that fall upon Geelong’s most significant buildings - the spire, town hall, post office and peace memorial, which turn a certain shade of purple during sunset.” Each floor in the library has both an Indigenous and an English name. The six-metre-high ground floor, Gathering Place, or Kikirringitj, meaning ‘we walk together’, maintains the traditional high ceiling of a library entrance. It features a news lounge, an information desk, a mezzanine and an 80-seat cafe to be installed in January. Level one, Reading Nest and Cave, or Kanyul

Keith Hogan has carved out a new hobby since joining Barwon Valley Woodwrights earlier this year. And with the help and support of other members, he’s produced a 1/21 scale model of a 1910 locomotive after six months of intricate work. Keith’s two-metre creation will be among numerous other wooden wonders at Barwon Valley Woodwrights’ annual exhibition this weekend. Members’ handiwork will be on display and sale alongside live demonstrations of skills such as wood turning, scroll-sawing, pyrography and other crafts. “Of particular interest for the ladies will be demonstrations by the Spinners and Weavers
Guild, lace-makers and intricate bead works,” said the organisers. “There will be toy assembly activities for children, with assistance provided by members. “The exhibition highlights many unique talents of members, through their finely handcrafted wooden items.” The exhibition will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday at Geelong Masonic Centre, 25 - 27 Regent Street, Belmont, with refreshments available. Entry is $5 for adults and free for children. More information is available at barwonvalleywoodwrights.com.

Greening, traffic clashes By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Rerouting traffic is part of a “can of worms” debate on revitalising central Geelong, according to city leaders. The city needed a “critical conversation” about transport issues, Central Geelong Action Plan manager Hilary Rutledge told a business breakfast meeting at Little Creatures on Thursday 19 November. Ms Rutledge said a successful greening of Malop Street raised the is-
sue of vehicle movements in the city’s bay end. The issue related to freight and public transport as well as cars. “Eastern Beach Road and Western Beach Road has 15,000 vehicles a day travelling in that zone,” she told the Geelong Business Network breakfast. “If we were designing a new suburb we’d be talking a four lane divided road with a median strip. “Is that really the level of amenity we want in the most fantastic and sig-
nificant social space we have? “The Malop Street vision is of a green spine with pedestrians a priority and a high level of bike provision but we’ve got nearly 10,000 vehicles per day that run along that street. The green spine vision isn’t compatible with how some of these existing transport functions work. “It’s a difficult conversation for the community but it’s the one we need to have if we’re to unlock the potential of the city.
“Nineteen of our bus services run through the Moorabool Street interchange. There’s a real question of the compatibility with an al fresco dining setting.” Geelong Authority chair Peter Dorling said Geelong had been too timid for difficult debates. “Let’s get the debate happening, get it on the table. If that means rerouting some traffic around central Geelong then let’s do it,” Mr Dorling said.
School reunion flavour as friends gather for Jac’s 70th JAC Renzenbrink’s 70th birthday was practically a school reunion when he celebrated with friends at home in Wallington recently. Guests even included a former teacher from the school he attended nearly 60 years ago. Newtown’s Fred Le Deux, 81 next month, taught grade three at Ocean Grove Primary School in 1956 when Jac was a pupil. Other former Wallington students to help Jac celebrate his birthday were Wangaratta’s Stuart Russell and Jac’s sister Linda Field of Drysdale. “I didn’t teach Jac but I knew him. He was in grade five,” said Fred, who at the time played VFL for Geelong. “Jac was in Bill Serong’s grade. He was a Collingwood player.” Fred modestly admitted to playing “a few games” for the Cats. In fact, he wore the blue hoops for about 20 matches between 1956 and 1958. “I was a ruckman. Ruckmen weren’t as big in those days,” he chuckled. But his bloodlines remain entrenched at the Cats through the towering presence of grandson Tom Hawkins in the goal square. “He calls me Freddie,” Fred said. - Kevin Norbury

‘Kitten tsunami’ flooding shelter By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A “kitten tsunami” is approaching Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) as it launches a Christmas appeal today (Friday). “Not only is Christmas the season of giving, it’s the season when our community’s cats start to multiply at quite an alarming rate,” said GAWS chief Adrian Buckley. “Spring is the breeding season and we really notice it here at GAWS. We’ve had several litters of tiny kittens dropped off to us in just the last couple of weeks and it’s not going to slow down LOVE CATS: Geelong during summer.” Animal Welfare Society The unfunded animal has launched its shelter relies on donations Christmas appeal. and fundraisers to look after the community’s lost and unwanted animals. The team of volunteers and staff encourages people to consider GAWS as a charity of choice. Mr Buckley suggested making a donation to GAWS as a Christmas gift instead of buying meaningless token gifts. “It’s better than wasting $10 or $20 on a bargain-store item, particularly for Kris Kringles, because it helps feed and care for an animal waiting for a new home. “The simplest way to donate is to go to the website gawsgiving.org.au and click on the Christmas Appeal tab.” Mr Buckely said GAWS had a chief objective of reducing stress on the animals as much as possible. Cats were particularly prone to high stress rates in shelter situations, he said. GAWS staff and volunteers did an “amazing job” and without exception all demonstrated genuine passion and love for animals, Mr Buckley said. “It’s very rewarding for them to see the community pitching in and helping with fundraising.”
Stems of Geelong have moved to a new bigger, better store with a huge range of gorgeous gifts ideas just in time for Christmas. Come and see our beautiful hand carved wood animals, perfect for terrariums.

‘Big rise’ in car theft for Geelong By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Car theft in Geelong rose 19 per cent in the year to 30 September, according to latest figures. The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) recorded 553 cars stolen in “short-term thefts and 190 taken for profit, a total of 743 for Geelong. Cars stolen for profit rose from 155 last year, a 23 per cent increase.
Thieves were stripping some cars, including prestigious European makes, and exporting them for huge profits, NMVTRC said. Short-term thefts, defined as cars taken for joyrides or the commission of another crime, rose 17 per cent, from 471 to 553. Geelong’s total car thefts were third highest in the state, behind Hume with 872 and Brimbank on 755. Geelong’s percentage increase was
13,620, exceeding New South Wales for the first time. NMVTRC executive director Ray Carroll said older model vehicles were more likely to be targeted in the past because they lacked adequate security such as an Australian standards-approved immobiliser. “Recently, however, we have seen a shift towards theft of newer model cars by the thief gaining access to the keys, Mr Carroll said.

The top 10 suburbs for thefts were Norlane 81, Corio 66, Belmont 53, Geelong 49, Lara 48, Geelong West 44, Newtown 42, Highton 27, Grovedale 26 and North Geelong 21. Various models of the Holden Commodore were the most-popular targets for car theft in Geelong. The statistics showed Victoria had a 5.6 per cent increase, up to 14,381 from
“Increasingly this is occurring via house burglary. Our advice to motorists, therefore, is to safeguard your keys. “We recommend that people keep their keys away from windows and external doors where they are easily visible to would-be thieves and to never leave a spare set of keys lying around. Mr Carroll said more security tips for motorists were available at carsecuritybeginsathome.com.
HIPPY families graduate with new skills for life in city’s northern suburbs Sixteen families have graduated from a two-year program teaching valuable life skills in Geelong’s northern suburbs. HIPPY, or Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters, farewelled its 2015 graduates at a celebration last week. Sixty-four participants, also including carers, completed the course, said HIPPY co-ordinator Rob Evans. “It’s a two-year journey that parents/carers and kindergarten children embark on together to develop a love of learning, curiosity and persistence, he said. “HIPPY offers learning opportunities to builds skills, develops self-esteem and even offers participating adults the chance to work in the program, thus providing employment pathways and new opportunities. Mr Evans said last week’s

4 Gordon Avenue, Geelong West Phone 5229 8605 www.geelongfurniturebydesign.com.au CONCERNS TABLED: Kel Brewer, Brendan O’Connor, Brett Noonan, Garry Holmyard, Richard Marles and Libby Coker discuss isses facing ex-Alcoa workers in Geelong.
‘Smart jobs’ not for all, says ALP By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong needs an employment program targeted at retrenched workers, according to Labor’s candidate for the federal seat of Corangamite. “It was valuable to hear and meet the former Alcoa workers and hear about their challenges and experiences in re-skilling and trying to find employment,” Libby Coker said. “It’s obviously been very challenging for them, because of their age and skill level, to find rewarding work. There needs to be more done to work with them and to support them.” Ms Coker said existing employment funds should acknowledge that some workers needed work other than the smart jobs being created. “It’s difficult but we can’t just forget about them. We should say to employers and the wider community that older workers bring with them reliability, responsibility, wisdom and life skills.” Federal Industry Minister Christopher Pyne

and state counterpart Lily D’Ambrosio last week spruiked $11.2 million in grants to Geelong businesses from a Geelong Region Innovation and Investment Fund (GRIIF). The grants would create 145 jobs and boost investment by $44 million, Mr Pyne said. “The Geelong region has faced more than its share of challenges but its ability to innovate, create new products and demonstrate its capabilities to the world is evident in the grants we announce today,” Mr Pyne said. Recipients included Jeff Sykes and Associates, Air-Radiators, Caronlab, The Edge Glass and MC Herd. State and federal governments and Ford Australia established the $25.9 million fund in response to Ford’s announcement that it would cease local production in 2016. The fund expanded with $5 million from Alcoa Australia in 2014 after it announced the closure of its Port Henry aluminium smelter.
Kel said he studied two courses since the plant closed, one in horticulture and another in civil construction. Many other workers had completed a traffic-management course, he said. “There are all sorts of courses but no work. There are only casual jobs available and we’re all going for the same jobs. “I know there are new jobs being created but those jobs are not for us.” “We’re too old and too injured,” Brett said. “As soon as you walk into an interview and they find out you’re injured or old you’ve got no chance.” Redundancy payouts could never cover the cost of being jobless, Brett said. “We stayed the course and, yes, we got a package but being denied work really gets you down. “The younger ones lined up jobs and left before the closure, so they missed the package but they have a job. We had to stay to keep the package. “Ford workers can get the package any time, even if they leave to go to another job. They get time off for training. “We missed out on that.” Brett said taking time to study in the hope of finding a new career was sometimes counterproductive. “By the time you finished the courses you’re out of work for a year.” The trio estimated that 20 per cent of exAlcoa workers had found full-time jobs, up to 60 per cent had either a little casual work or nothing and the rest had given up or retired. “We just want to feel worthwhile, be part of something,” Garry said. “Being at Alcoa, especially the shift workers, was a big part of our social life and that has all gone. “We just want to raise some awareness of what’s happening so people can learn from it.”

Could the couple or the girl’s parents phone me on 0435 823 133. Tony, East Geelong Buckets to selfish bike riders who fail to alert walkers to their presence on tracks along the Barwon River. It’s almost as bad as when they fail to indicate while riding in traffic. Why is it one rule for riders, another for drivers? Walker And Driver, Highton Bouquets to Highton Valley Meats and Highton Village Florist for contacting me about an elderly gentleman finding my wallet. I was so relieved. It’s heartwarming to know honest, kind people are still in our community. Melissa, Highton Bouquets to Lions Club of Corio/Norlane for a trivia night, Golden Opportunity Community Shop’s Anne for running its silent auction and to the many people who supported the successful evening to raise money for The Heart and Love Centre in Cambodia. The $3000 will pay another year’s lease. Helen McLean, Bell Post Hill Bouquets to Gull Bus’s service to Station Pier, Melbourne. We were very impressed. It was punctual, efficient and once our luggage was loaded we didn’t see it again until it was delivered to our cabin. It was easy for we older travellers. The return trip was equally well organised. Two Happy Travellers, Lara Bouquets to Alison and Alan for kindly offering to take me to my car at South Geelong Railway Station after I boarded the wrong train from Melbourne, which terminated at the Geelong station. I love a parade - at twilight
Imported disharmony our reality If the primary responsibility of any state is the preservation of the state and the protection of its citizens from internal and external threat, how is it that successive Australian governments have allowed in people who pose a demonstrable risk to public safety and community harmony? Some immigrants have had little or nothing in common with the culture of this country and our democratic process and, therefore, little to offer it, coupled with clear evidence they are long-term burdens on taxpayers. This is neither racism nor religious intolerance, only reality. Our country has been let down by self-serving party politicians who place so-called international humanitarian considerations over the welfare of their own citizens. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Patriots defend law, unlike lefties In recent months ISIS boasted it had secreted hundreds of jihadi fighters in Europe among its refugee influx. According to Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party, 15,000 of the same were floating around Europe, with 450 fighters in England alone. European governments seem not of a mind to stem the flow, even though countries neighbouring Syria are well-placed to accommodate genuine refugees. They do not need to go to the other side of the world. Reclaim Australia and other such outfits wish to remind Australians and immigrants of a couple of basic requirements. We have our own law and do not require Islamic law, which is summary law without right of appeal. To propose implementation of Islamic law is sedition under our constitution and essentially an act of treason that should be frowned upon by anyone with the least amount of patriotism. I attended a rally earlier this year at Federation Square where I was appalled as socialist lefties perpetrated all the spiteful behaviour whereas Reclaimists peacefully held placards and chatted. The mainstream media ought to get the story straight and stop misrepresenting patriotic Australians who want to keep their country as it should be. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West

just in time to avoid a fine. If a crisis occurs on a busy day your small pets could even be sent off to the vet on their own. There’ll be swarms of them buzzing around everywhere. We’ll be dodging them and brushing them off like flies. There’ll be so many of them up there they’ll deflect the sun’s rays away from Earth and our global warming problem will disappear. There could be a few other problems of course such as crashed drones, and injured pedestrians … but, then, nothing’s perfect! Melva Stott Anglesea

I think it was a good idea to try the Gala Day parade at a new time. From what I saw, it paid off. The people of Geelong who came out to see the twilight parade should be glad, as the timing made it good. I stood at the park where it started to get a better view then walked down to where it was headed. While I was walking, to my surprise the amount of people lining the street was fantastic. I hope the parade is left in its new timeslot for a big 100th anniversary Gala Day next year. B Porter Corio

Common sense wrong on climate
Bogan tweet ‘unsocial’ media
Tim Saclier (Letters, 20 November) accused Dan Cowdell (Letters, 13 November) of ignoring facts in the CSIRO survey on attitudes to global warming, then went on to ignore some facts himself. First, the CSIRO survey found that opinion levels had in fact been stable over time, so nothing has really changed since 2010. It also found that those who think climate change is human-induced were more likely to say scientific research was the source of their opinion, whereas those who say it’s not were more likely to select commonsense as their basis. Commonsense, or what we are used to, is notoriously bad at uncovering real facts of the world. It took Galileo to drop two balls of different weight to show how wrong commonsense was about falling bodies, for example. Mr Saclier then went on to offer arguments citing the Little Ice Age and cyclical weather patterns, which might seem easy to answer with commonsense. Easy but wrong. Let’s not go back to the Middle Ages - trust the science, there’s too much to lose. Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads
Jan Farell wants to talk about “uber-bogans” (Geelong Indy, 20 November). I happen to think she’s badly dressed but you don’t see me taking to Twitter about it. If her tweets are an indication of the kind of professionalism her constituents expect of her then it merely reinforces my point. Forcing idiots to vote is not helping democracy. Kevin V Russell Geelong
At least like thy neighbour Australia was built on God’s plan for fellowship in believing we should do unto others as we would expect others to do unto us. It is time Australians stood up to say we built Australia as a free colony for people with similar open minds to come here and follow the Australian way of life. Have we forgotten to accept that neighbours might share our outlook, otherwise they would not have decided to live in the same street? Why all the locked homes behind high fences? Readers should open their hearts and invite their neighbours in for a cuppa and a chat about things of mutual interest. If this is unacceptable for privacy reasons then they could knock on their neighbours’ door to eventually realise they are just as friendly. Last week I asked a lad how he was but received no answer. He ignored a neighbour offering friendly communication. I felt that he did not want to get involved with his neighbours. This is the sort of attitude making people live like hermits; living like someone who passes off their neighbours as inferior to them. The old saying ‘Birds of a feather flock together’ can also apply to humans. Thomas T S Watson Bell Post Hill
Droning on about future According to leading boffins, the next boon for mankind will to be the drone. Businesses will have a fleet of them. Your pizzas will be delivered by them; all take-away food will become fly-in food. The hardware store can send you a few more bits and pieces to complete your DIY project while you stay at home holding it all together. When a husband is home late the florist can make sure the flowers arrive before he does. Household drones will deliver letters and birthday cards that arrive on time. If the kids leave their phys-ed gear at home it can be droned directly to the school and there’ll be no excuses for dodging PE. Forgotten library books will be zapped back
Why .0004’s a big deal As someone who has taught extensively in environmental sciences, I find the scientific illiteracy of climate deniers inexcusable and galling. Tim Saclier suggested the warming of the 20th Century could as likely be due to a cessation of the Little Ice Age as to increases in atmospheric CO2, which he further described as miniscule. It can’t. People like Mr Saclier clearly do not understand the simple physics of the greenhouse effect. If they did they would understand that increasing CO2 necessarily accelerates this effect and so temperatures have to rise. If they properly understood the one million years of ice core data now available, they would know that the present CO2 level of 400 parts per million is unparalleled in this timeframe and over 40 per cent above pre-industrial levels. Mr Saclier described this rise as miniscule, which was untrue. Furthermore, the ice core data demonstrates a strong correlation of global temperatures with CO2, as would be expected by the greenhouse effect. At 400ppm the greenhouse effect now runs very fast indeed. Climate scientists have been trying to tell us the only thing that can account for the global temperature rises seen since the mid-1970s is increased greenhouse warming. The cessation of the limited Little Ice Age doesn’t even figure. Our best hope for the Paris climate summit is that decision-makers have extricated themselves from the misinformation of climate deniers and listen only to the science. Ward Talk Funding for stage one of Drysdale’s sub-regional sports precinct has been secured. The major components include ovals for soccer and football/cricket as well as a temporary pavilion and a car park. Sports training lights will also be installed. Council is preparing design briefs in preparation for tenders to be released. A reference group will also be formed and will include representatives from local sporting clubs. Additional funds identified in council’s 2016/2017 resource plan have been committed to the memorial park pavilion and netball project.
Council is awaiting documentation from the State Government regarding funds from its election commitment. I expect tenders to be released in the next week or so. First-stage works will include: facilities for netballers and football/netball umpires; an upgrade of existing players’ change rooms and showers; and construction of two netball courts. Council is expecting a report from officers in coming months which will recommend a scope of services and planning for the design of Drysdale Integrated Children’s and Family Centre. The facility will include a kinder and children’s health and family support services.
Selection of architects for the design of Leopold Community Hub’s stage two should be complete before Christmas with tenders closing next week. A community reference group will form early in the new year to provide input during the design process. A library and youth, seniors space and community meeting spaces will be included. Council has partnered with secondary schools, Deakin University, The Gordon and Geelong Regional Library Corporation to support the connection of all secondary schools to Australian Academic Research Network (AARNet)), a high-speed internet service.
The project working group has completed a business plan, which has been presented to the State Government for consideration. This important project has the potential to significantly improve the learning outcomes for students at our schools. More information is available from secondary school principals and by searching under ‘Projects - Priority Projects’ at g21.com.au. Meanwhile, NBNCo has released a plan for a fibre-to-the-node rollout across the Geelong region, with parts of the Bellarine Peninsula scheduled for imminent commencement. 15 GEELONG INDY Friday, 27 November, 2015

Pyke tours new album By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN There’s a lot happening in the world and much of it is unhappy, as any thinking, feeling human being well knows. Singer-songwriter Josh Pyke is certainly among the deeper thinking and feeling human beings, having challenged his thoughts and emotions in his fifth studio album. Storyteller Pyke will bring his interpretation of the human condition to Geelong as part of a national tour in support of the album But For All These Shrinking Hearts. Plenty of musical aficionados agree, with Pyke scoring his highest album debut yet when it landed at number two on the ARIA charts and number one on the Australian albums chart. “It’s no mean feat. I’m stoked,” Pyke said. Perhaps it’s Pyke’s take on the world that has elicited such a heart-warming response to the album. “I think I was a bit disillusioned with the world when I was writing it,” he said. “There are a lot of themes of disillusion and almost a feeling of world-weariness that comes through, even though the melo-
dies are quite upbeat. “There is lots of stuff going on in the world that’s not terrific. I do get angered by what I hear on the news at times. “I guess all that affects your psyche and the way you rationalise the world. The human condition always ends up in the songs.” But Pyke shies away from any real analysis of his songs, even self-analysis. “I’m not thinking about how it will be received when I’m writing or recording it,” he said. “I don’t try to over-analyse what will work as I am doing it. It’s almost a form of therapy and it happens to be my profession. “I’m just writing without an agenda and from the heart. “I think there’s a sense of honesty within the record.” Pyke said he was looking forward to bringing his full band to Geelong’s Wool Exchange. “I enjoy performing, exploring the performance space. There’s always something different about every crowd, the interaction with each other and the performer. “Perhaps I can take people away from their troubles and put on a great show that allows people to be transported for an hour and a half.” Pyke will appear at the Wool Exchange on 13 February.

Fresh Chambers back at Gateway INSPIRED: Kasey Chambers will play songs from her latest album in her Geelong show.
By ALANA MITCHELSON After surgery forced Kasey Chambers into eight weeks off singing and postponed her tour this year, the award-winning country musician has returned with a fresh approach to songwriting. Chambers said she had two small nodules on her vocal cords for the past 20-odd years but it wasn’t until early this year that she felt their full impact. “It got so bad that I could barely get though gigs,” she said. “It wasn’t painful at all but my voice got really husky and I wasn’t allowed to speak after shows. It was really stressful because it was always in the back of my mind. “I’m so glad that’s all over. It feels great to be out on tour again.“ Since getting her voice back, Chambers has found herself exploring a different style of songwriting. Now two-thirds of the way through writing a new record, she was adamant new material would be released next year. Chambers’ latest album, Bittersweet, was her first solo album in four years. The mum of three - with children aged 13, eight and four - has made adjustments to her touring schedule since establishing her family. “I tour differently now. I’ll go interstate for weekends at a time
and then have a few days at home to catch up and help the kids with their homework,” she said. “I try to get the balance right. I’m lucky to have a lot of support from family. “I used to need to be in a quiet room by myself to write. I’ve had to change the way I approach songwriting since having kids. Otherwise I’d never write a song again for the rest of my life,” she laughed. Chambers’ rare downtime is spent almost exclusively with the kids - going to the park or beach, conversing with other mums, or watching her children at skate school or Oztag footy. Chambers recently returned from what she described as her best US tour yet, having sold out a number of shows. But the multiple ARIA Award winning, chart-topping artist admitted that, although she would like to be, she is not always inspired. “Sometimes I need to get away from music for a while. Often after a long tour I’ll feel tired and a bit burnt out,” Chambers said. “After some time, I’ll go out and listen to some live music or buy a new album, listen to what others are creating and get inspired again.” Chambers advised fans to expect old favourites as well as songs from Bittersweet when she played Corio’s Gateway Hotel on 4 December.

Tanner ready for Drysdale’s party By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN The party has lasted 38 years and shows no signs of slackening, especially with one of Geelong’s favourites, Libby Tanner, at the helm. Tanner stars in Abigail’s Party, the 1970s classic play of society and manners by director Mike Leigh, a sell out in London’s West End that has graced professional and amateur stages ever since. The play focuses on an evening of domestic hell in the guise of a suburban drinks soirée. As the alcohol flows tensions, both personal and societal, brutally emerge. Reportedly one repertory society tried using real drinks instead of pretend alcohol and didn’t make it to the second act. While teenager Abigail parties next door, the pretentious Beverly and her estate agent husband, Laurence entertain their neighbours - Abigail’s mother, Susan, ex-footballer, Tony, and his wife, Angela. The hosts’ barely functional marriage along with their obsessions, prejudices and petty competitiveness are ruthlessly, and hilariously, exposed. “We all adore black comedy and taking it to its extreme relationship,” Tanner said of the topline cast. “Audiences can utterly relate despite the shocks
because they can recognise the behaviour. “It goes off the charts with its comment on social structure and our materialistic world.” Tanner said the play took on a development life of its own through rehearsals, with new wrinkles added even as late as this week. Tanner is well-known from roles in Stingers, Police Rescue Special Ops and Fireflies and most recently in Nowhere Boys and Wentworth. After moving to Geelong, Tanner rediscovered her passion for theatre and teamed up with Stephen Macklin to co-found the Geelong Production Company. The two studied theatre together at Ballarat University, with Tanner working mostly in television and Macklin in and around the entertainment industry in Sydney. They are joined by Richard Sutherland, Brad Beales, Rose Sejean and Kethly Hemsworth in this production. Tanner says she hopes Abigail’s Party becomes a signature production for the company, taking it to various festivals and even to New York next year. Abigail’s Party begins 8pm on 3 and 4 December at the Drysdale’s Potato Shed. Tickets are available at City of Greater Geelong customer service centres.

Everything in stock for work on classic car rejuvenations Doing up a car is a great Aussie tradition and one that Adam Guglielmi is doing his level best to ensure remains an institution in Geelong. Owner of South Geelong’s Bodyshop Paint Supplies, Adam offers a one-stop shop with everything that anyone looking to restore or upgrade a car might need. Or a boat, or industrial machinery as well – he’s got everything covered. Bodyshop Paint Supplies is an auto paint retailer, dealing with all aspects of the panel trade as well as industrial coatings for machinery or boats. “We’ve got all the stuff they’ll need, everything from start to finish – and all the right stuff so they’re not led down the wrong track,” Adam says. “We want to make sure they get everything right the first time, so it’s more affordable and we’ll do great deals, too.” Bodyshop Paint Supplies carries brands including Debeer, Valspar automotive and industrial mix, House Of Kolor, HB Body, Smirdex abrasives, Durablock, Apac tools, Iwata sprayguns and airbrush equipment and Menzerna polishing compounds. Wayne’s Wheel Alignment – Rob White at his Belmont shop.
Wheels key to driving safety for long trips, holiday travel The longest drive of the year for many motorists is to their holiday destination and the last thing they need is to suffer a breakdown or mechanical failure en-route, according to Rob White. The managing director of Wayne’s Wheel Alignment and Service Centre says drivers also needed to ensure that they’re running safe as well as running well. “We’ve been in the business for a long time many of our customers come to the workshop annually because they know the kind of service we provide and all our work is guaranteed,” Rob says. He urges car owners to make safety and reliability their priority before making any long distance trips. “We can do everything that is needed from mechanical repairs from a new vehicle and out of warranty servicing, wheel alignments, suspension, brakes, tyres, wheel balancing and automatic transmissions,” he says. The Belmont centre has state of the art equipment that allows its experienced staff to work on all forms of vehicles. “Just make sure everything is in order before you pack up the car and set off on holidays,” Rob says. The Geelong company has been operating for more than 25 years and Rob says you do not survive in such a competitive Industry unless you establish a trust with your customer. “Our reputation means everything to us, that’s why we are prepared to make that extra effort to ensure that our customers are happy with our service,” Rob says. The wheel alignment specialists have also expanded their engineering expertise to meet a growing demand for motorcycle maintenance. Call in and talk to Rob at Wayne’s Wheel Alignment at 25 Crows Rd, Belmont, or phone 5244 3742.

SPORT LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club isn’t doing things the easy way this season and last Saturday was no exception, with the side managing to turn what could have been a comfortable victory into a one-wicket nail-biter. Chasing the Camberwell Magpies 183, the Cats were cruising when Aussie stars Aaron Finch and Andrew McDonald guided them to 5/121. However, the loss of both players saw the side’s chances of victory plummet with the score stuck on 7/136. But experienced duo Liam Buchanan and Luke Muller staged an important fightback, moving the score to 173 before Buchanan was dismissed for a hard-fought 30. With scores tied, another wicket fell, meaning
another wicket would result in a heart-breaking tie. Corey Ogle and Dylan Moroney scored the one run necessary for a welcome and moraleboosting win. The next two weekends see four days of Twenty20 cricket, starting with Footscray Edgewater at Geelong Cricket Ground tomorrow. A good showing over the next two weeks could see the Cats back in finals contention. In the Geelong Cricket Association, Grovedale is well-placed to record an important win against Newtown and Chilwell, after Tobias Hogg found some form with an excellent 106 not out, helping guide his side to 4/291. He found good support from youngster Michael McNeel who made 41 not out. The Tigers know a disciplined bowling performance tomorrow against a shallow Two Blues batting line-up will get the chocolates.
In division two, Bell Park holds the dominant position in their game against Waurn Ponds after Mitch Trask took 3/29 in the Eagles’ total of 175 all out. In reply, the Dragons cruised to 2/78, with Trask again in the action, finishing day one on 38 not out. If they can manage a steady start tomorrow, Bell Park will easily win this one. And in division three, Guild St Marys’ middle order has given them the slight upper hand against Corio Bay, helping post a competitive 202 after being in big trouble early. Skipper Steven Kelly top scored with 71, while for the hosts, gun bowler Timmy Thompson took 4/51 from a marathon 20 overs. This game will go down to the wire, and with both sides desperately needing the points to stay in finals contention, if there’s a game worth going to watch tomorrow, this will be it.
BUST A MOVE: Xavier Huxtable commands the close-outs.
Huxtable brothers dominate in their hometown waves Jan Juc’s Huxtable brothers have dominated a junior championships for junior surfers. Xavier Huxtable won the under-14 boys title at the inaugural SmoothStar Micro Groms Cup at Ocean Grove on Sunday. Younger brother Ethan placed four in the under-14s and also won the under-12 boys division. More than 90 under-14 surfers from around
Australia contested the cup over two days. Xavier Huxtable was a standout, winning all his heats on the way to the main title. “I’m so happy. It’s pretty sick to claim some prize money as well!” he said after the presentation. “It was pretty tough out there. Most waves were straight close-outs with the occasional
one that peeled.” Ocean Grove’s Bodhie Williams also reached the under-14 boys final, finishing third. Baron Heads’ Ellie Harrison was second in the under-14 girls, with Jan Juc’s Bella Wilson third. Jan Juc’s Willis Droomer and Stella Huxtable won the under-10 boys and girls respectively.
Geelong takes draft gamble on three project players Geelong has gambled on three project players in its late selections in the AFL national draft. The Cats also added a player with AFL experience in midfielder Sam Menegola, previously on lists at Fremantle and Hawthorn. Geelong selected Ryan Gardner (pick 59), Sam Menegola (pick 66), Wylie Buzza (pick 69) and Matthew Hayball (pick 70). “We feel pleased with what we
accomplished in the draft,” Geelong’s national recruiting and list manager Stephen Wells said. “Sam is a strong-bodied midfielder and can also go forward. He really dominated in the WAFL with Subiaco this past season. “He is 23 and is strong-bodied and we think will have the opportunity to earn a spot in the team next year. “Ryan has played senior foot-
ball this year and he played well in the under 18 championships and at the MCG on grand final day. “Like all young players he has development in him and we see him as a defender. “Wylie has only played football for the past three years mainly as a forward but also little in the ruck. He did a good job in the national championships and in the TAC cup.
“Matthew spent most of the season in the SANFL under 18s and earned a spot in the reserves by the end of the season. “His body is wiry and will take time to develop and he is a versatile player that can slot into a number of positions. “We have a good mix of players and will have further opportunities in the rookie draft.”
Mad mulloway ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Daniel Baden ventured up the Barwon River estuary last week, baiting up in anticipation of a mulloway. Just after the tide change his rod sprang to life before Daniel boated a 75cm mulloway. Later on he was about to call it a day when his rod took again, this time with a 67cm fish. Other anglers fishing the estuary caught excellent numbers of silver trevally to 45cm on bait and lure. Whiting and squid dominated off St Leonards, with the odd snapper being taken as well. Squid were caught over grass beds south of the boat ramp, the whiting were again biting straight out in 5m to 6m on the run-out tide, while the early-morning sessions were essential to catch snapper. Tackleworld Laverton’s Cesare Abbate fished for snapper off Werribee on Sunday, boating a chunky 7.45kg fish on bait. Clifton Springs was still the local standout for snapper, with persistent anglers bagging fish to 6kg. Catching squid or silver whiting baits beforehand produced the best results, particularly on the larger snapper. Brian Long and John Mole fished Cinema Point with metal lures for Australian salmon. Their fish averaged 1kg, although some reached 2kg. The Barwon River produced lots of redfin, with Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt doing well on small Bassman spinner baits. Adam attracted and caught reddies to 40cm in among heavy snags upstream from Queen’s Park. Anglers reported increasing amounts of blue-green algae at Lake Bullen Merri, which often appears around summer. Fish were still available but the going was tough, with only a few smaller Chinook salmon banked. However, Lake Purrumbete’s water conditions were excellent. Anglers who made early starts slowly trolling hard-body lure caught trout and Chinook salmon to 1.5kg along the lake’s weed-lined edges. Anglers with small watercraft, such as punts or kayak, were able to fish Lake Elingamite. Casting or trolling hard-body lures such as Daiwa double clutches caught rainbow and brown trout to 2kg along with some big redfin. The next week should be worth fishing for snapper off St Leonards worth a try, while kingfish are rumoured to have appeared off Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove. Freshwater anglers could try the Barwon River around Queen’s Park for redfin.
