Council will fight By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges mayor Jason Callanan says the council will aim to appeal a VEC recommendation that will see the biggest change to ward structures in 20 years. On Wednesday, 25 November, the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) officially finished its review into the Yarra Ranges Council’s electoral structure, releasing its report and recommendations to the Victorian Government. The final recommendation of the report was that the council should keep nine councillors, but have them elected from three wards, rather than the current nine for next year’s election. These three wards are Chirnside, which takes in the urban areas of the municipality around Lilydale, O’Shannassy, which encompasses the Yarra Valley and Mount Evelyn, and Streeton, which covers the Dandenong Ranges. It follows preliminary submissions received during August and early September, follow-up submissions to a preliminary report and a public meeting on 5 November. Cr Callanan, who made a submission in favour of keeping the current nine-ward structure, said the recommendation was “surprising”, as the VEC originally indicated it was in favour of keeping the status quo. He said the change meant he would now be seeking re-election with councillors Jim Child and Fiona McAllister in a ward that covered the entire Yarra Valley - about 22,000 square kilometres. “I honestly don’t know how it’s going to work - I really don’t,” he said. “Looking at my ward, Jim’s ward and Fiona’s ward combining into one, that’s huge, and I don’t know how I can appreciate what Healesville’s issues are, because I’m not there all the time - I’m not local.”
Cr Callanan said the proposed change would be the biggest ward change in the Yarra Ranges since the council began about 20 years ago. He agreed with the VEC report’s statement that the change gave residents variety in councillors for their area, who may have different political views, but argued there was already a similar system. “I guess, in a way ... if they don’t feel like they’re getting success with one councillor, they can go to another - so that’s where it becomes fair,” Cr Callanan said. “They can do that now - there is the opportunity to come to the mayor to say ‘I’m not having any success with the councillor’, and things can be looked at that way. “I do believe that councillors here are very fair, and are open, and don’t have very political drives or agendas, and shouldn’t at this level of government.” He said he was hoping to meet with Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins to discuss the potential changes and council’s position. Though the VEC had previously stated a preference for keeping the current council structure with nine wards (Option A), most public submitters favoured changing to three major wards (Option B). The report said the three wards would address concerns about splitting townships more than the other options, which was an issue of contention for some submitters. “Option B reflected the strong message in preliminary submissions that a three-ward model of three councillors in each ward would be the best way to represent the three major geographic communities of the municipality,” the report read. “Option B has strong and clearly identifiable ward boundaries reflecting these communities of interest. Briefly Does it ring a bell?
Precinct Committee members, Rod Barnard, Jeff Gill and Kate Barratt are open to ideas. 147774

From eyesore to ideas By KATH GANNAWAY THE possibilities are endless, according to a committee tasked with pulling together ideas for the Warburton Community Recreation Precinct. Made up of representatives of a number of local township and community groups, the committee is spearheading a six-month campaign aimed at transforming the open space that includes the old pool, playground and tennis courts. “We have an amazing parcel of land there, and we need to do something with it,” said Jeff Gill who represents Warburton Advancement League on the committee.
“We want to get ideas from people who are interested in seeing what is currently an eyesore into something that will provide a fantastic space for local people and that will make people want to come to Warburton. “We’re not relying on consultants to come up with the ideas, locals are driving this. “The ideas will come from families, kids, youth and other people in the community, and that’s what will make it work. Rod Barnard, representing local primary schools, said they wanted something for the whole town, not just for kids, and something that would be able to be used all year round.
There will be six events, including drop-in information sessions, where people will be able to go along to get information and put ideas forward. The first is a “brain-storming” session for students in the grades four, five and six age group. The on-site meeting will take place on Monday 7 December, with students from Millwarra and Warburton primary schools taking part. Students in that age bracket who attend other schools are also welcome to attend. Kate Barratt, manager of the Redwoods Community Centre, said the committee was going to great lengths to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to have a say.
“This is really about information gathering; we are not a decision-making committee, but to ensure that there is wide and open consultation with the community,” she said. “We’re working with a blank sheet, and it’s a very exciting opportunity.” The time-line is to have a plan to submit to Yarra Ranges Council by around October next year for costing in the council’s 2017/’18 budget. Contact Jeff Gill 0437 095 327, Kate Barrett 5966 2320 or Rod Barnard on 5966 2518 for further information and for future consultation events.
POLICE are calling on witnesses to come forward, after a burglary from an East Warburton property last week, if the stolen item rings any bells. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said between 5pm on 15 November and 7.30pm on 20 November, unknown persons broke into a semirural property on Hazelwood Road, Warburton East. The burglars cut a padlock on the front gate of the property, which is used by the Hungarian Scout Association, and stole a 350 kilogram brass bell. The bell had inscriptions on its surface, and Det Sgt Barrow described it as “very large”. Anyone with information on the burglary, who saw any suspicious activity or who may have spotted a large brass bell, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report on www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.
Tennis courts trashed WARBURTON police are looking over video footage as part of their investigation into criminal damage at the Gladysdale tennis courts on Friday 20 November. A local resident provided footage of the incident which happened around 10pm. Police said four 4WD vehicles were parked next to the tennis courts and decided to push over the fence with their bullbars causing significant dam-
age. Senior Constable Don Trice said police were keen to catch the perpetrators. “To damage a local tennis court like this is pretty disappointing,” he said. “It’s money and effort that I assume people now have to give up their time and effort to fix.” Anyone with information can contact Leading Senior Constable Kevin Bishop at Warburton police station on 5966 2006 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Wanted man nabbed A WANTED man has been remanded in custody after being spotted by an off-duty police officer in Lilydale last week, and is expected to face court for multiple burglary charges. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said on Thursday 26 November, an off-duty officer spotted a car travelling along the Maroondah Highway in Lilydale, with the driver a burglary suspect being sought by police. Det Sgt Barrow said other police units attended and arrested the 38-yearold man, who had “a number” of outstanding warrants for burglaries. The man, of no fixed place of abode, was charged, remanded in custody and presented at court on Friday 27 November. Maroondah CIU Senior Constable Rosemary Young said the man was wanted “all over Melbourne”, for outstanding warrants and dishonesty offences, among other charges. He was then further remanded in custody.
Council to fight against restructure plan missions in favour of keeping the current ward structure. Healesville Action Group (HAG)’s John Anwin said he was “delighted and surprised” about the recommendation, with the group campaigning for the change at the 2007 electoral review. “Needless to say, we are very pleased,” he said. “I know there is a lot of concern that vested interest groups would stand three councillors on a ticket, and perhaps eliminate

independent people, and I guess that’s up for the ratepayers now to be more vigilant about who they vote for. “It’s the old adage of you get the government that you deserve, and I think that’s pretty true at all levels.” The VEC report said the body considered increasing the councillor numbers to 11, to be consistent with similar councils in Victoria, but noted “significantly higher numbers of voters and rapid population growth” in

From page 1 “The three-ward structure with three councillors per ward is considered by the VEC to be less vulnerable to the impacts of the population growth pattern, and is therefore a sustainable model for the municipality into the future.” An Option C, with different multi-councillor wards, was proposed - but was not supported by any public responses. Yarra Ranges says ‘no’ to family violence By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS YARRA Ranges Council has used White Ribbon Day on Wednesday 25 November to begin their 16-day campaign to raise awareness for and change attitudes towards men’s violence against women. The 16 Days of Activism campaign is led in the region by Women’s Health East and aims to change the understanding of what causes men’s violence against women and what can be done to change it. The initiative was launched Wednesday at Lillydale Lake where 16 bollards with local statistics and facts about domestic violence were on display. The bollards had statistics about men’s violence against women, such as police in the Yarra Ranges attending 479 domestic violence related incidents where children were present, 1372 incidents in total. Yarra Ranges Council is bringing together advocacy groups from across the community to inform and educate people about the impact gender inequality has on the prevalence of violence in the community. The 16 Days of Activism campaign will see events held around the shire with speakers including members of advocacy groups, domestic violence survivors and community leaders. Melissa Bell, a survivor of domestic violence and Women's
Health East advocate, has been invited to speak at council-run events about her experiences and says Yarra Ranges are taking important steps to end men’s violence against women. “I think it’s amazing,” she said. “It’s really productive and even if it starts small it will gain momentum. “While this is very confronting and will make people uncomfortable, it’s reality and it’s what we need for change.” Kathy Oliver is Yarra Ranges Council’s new gender equality officer and says this initiative is only the tip of the iceberg for how Yarra Ranges is working shift community attitudes. “We are taking a primary prevention approach,” she said. “We recognise that men’s violence against women is caused by inequality in power and stereotyping of gender roles.” Ms Oliver said the Yarra Ranges Council would be taking a leading role in shifting these perceptions by actively combating damaging attitudes and practices within the council workplace and acting as a role model for community values. The council’s Family Youth and Children’s Services manager Guy Masters said the campaign is about taking the lead and working towards changing community views.
“We want to challenge all the attitudes in the community that allow violence against women to occur,” he said. “Tackling this problem means a paradigm shift and changing the messages that say there is a difference in the power between men and women.” Council CEO Glenn Patterson said the council was committed to carrying on the messages of White Ribbon Day into the regular operations of council business. “We aim to be a role model and not in just raising awareness,” he said. “It’s important as an employer that we take the lead in applying best practice for gender equality. “It’s not just about white ribbon day or the 16 days of activism but it needs to be an ongoing crossorganisational approach to gender equality.” Streeton Ward councillor Noel Cliff said White Ribbon Day brought back painful memories for himself and said he saw the initiative as so important to end an entrenched attitude of violence in the community. “Hopefully we can teach a generation that behaviour is unacceptable and it we don’t start now it’ll never stop,” he said. “It’s about not making excuses anymore”

DON’T MISS OUT...
A MORNING tea in Healesville on Thursday 10 December will provide women with a chance to connect under the White Ribbon banner. Healesville Rotary Club will host the morning tea at 10.30am in Queen’s Park as part of Yarra Ranges Council’s 16days of activism, in support of the White Ribbon campaign that aims to stamp out violence against women. Rotarian Lesley Plumpton said the morning tea was a follow-on from the successful forum Rotary held last year addressing family violence. “This morning tea is to provide an opportunity for women to connect with other women in the community in an open and informal setting,” Ms Plumpton said. She said it was interesting that at the seminar there were a number of people who identified themselves as ‘knowing someone who was a victim of family violence’. Ms Plumpton said the morning tea was a discreet, and if desired, anonymous forum for women to talk, connect and get information about what family violence looked like, and what services were available to help. She said it may be that parents want to be more informed of what violence against women is so they can have that conversation with their own teenage children - boys and girls. “We have made it at this time of day because there may be women who can’t come along at night but once the kids are off to school can drop in at something like this,” she said. She said also that it was important that people recognise that violence against women is not confined to physical abuse but is also emotional, financial and psychological abuse. One of the unexpected revelations of the 2014 seminar was the incidence of elder abuse. Ms Plumpton said it was recognised that violence against women had no age or social barriers. “There may be women out there who find it hard to talk to family or friends, but who would be open to talking to someone who is more removed from the situation, but who is caring and able to provide the information and links they may need,” she said. The morning will be informal and friendly, and, if there is a demonstrated need, could develop into a support group. “If there is one person who needs that, we will do it because, we are sure it will grow,” Ms Plumpton said. For more information contact Ms Plumpton on 0409 855 799 or Yarra Ranges Council’s community development officer Josette O’Donnell on 0428 639 898.

More digging required HAVE I missed something significant to community sustainability and retail/industrial progress inside the fest wrap-around of the Mountain Views Mail? During the October Healesville Heritage Festival ‘merger discussions’, linking the Healesville and Yarra Glen chambers of commerce, were reported. On Tuesday, 24 November, the front page declared Alex Lagerway the new president of the Healesville Chamber of Commerce. Does Mr Lagerway wear two hats, or have these groups officially merged as one? Not all Yarra Glen traders agreed with this proposal. As a resident and consumer, I support the merger, provided it brings about real business vitality, skilled local employment and better long-term planning with clear public communication. I propose a new organisational name, ‘Turntable Chamber of Commerce’. Which businesses in both main streets and industrial parks are fully paid-up members of the chamber? Will the (assumed) merger fix so many empty and struggling shops in Bell Street, Yarra Glen? Has the Celebration Shopping Centre ever achieved its full potential since it opened with much
supermarket fanfare in early December 2008? The newspaper appears very reluctant to dig out all the necessary details for effective local business reporting. Noel Buchanan, Yarra Glen.
Work at safety WHILE the build-up to Christmas is a busy period for every workplace, it should never be a dangerous one. And yet, according to WorkSafe statistics, more Victorian workers die in the eight weeks leading up to Christmas than at any other time of the year. We know that many businesses are rushing to finish projects so deadline pressures may be a factor. And we know that many fatalities involve experienced workers doing routine jobs, particularly on farms. It only takes seconds for things to go very wrong, so carefully consider each job before starting. The simple fact is that every workplace fatality is preventable. If employers have the safe systems in place to protect their workers, if people stop to plan each day with safety in mind, and if everyone works together to identify and eliminate or reduce risks, then workplace fatalities can be prevented. The upcoming Christmas holi-
days should be a time of joy. It should not be a time families are mourning the loss of a loved one who has died at work. So, please, everyone, take time every day to make workplace safety your absolute priority. Marnie Williams, Executive Director of Health and Safety, WorkSafe Victoria.
Highway closure not agreeable WHO made the decision to close the Warburton Highway on Sunday, 22 December, without asking the residents and traders if all were agreeable? Our streets had physical barriers, supposedly from 7am to 10am, although a resident was told at 6am that she couldn’t leave and had to push the point. What about people going to work; or people going to the airport, or an emergency, or, heaven forbid, people who work all week and only get the weekend to go about their business? I believe that local traders had a difficult day, due to lack of parking near their stores. I hope that next time, the organisation chooses a better site ‘with an alternative route’. I suppose that I could have kayaked down the Yarra! Cath Seegers, East Warburton.

Storage woes well shelved By KATH GANNAWAY IF THERE is one thing Upper Yarra Secondary College librarian Heather Pennington loves almost as much as books, it’s shelves to put them on. And, thanks to Eastern Regional Library, she has a room full of shelving that she says will transform the school library. The school and the library are working more closely than ever before, with students utilising online resources at the library which are not accessible at the school. When she found out about a proposed refurbishment of the Yarra Junction Library, Heather was quick to grab an opportunity to update the school library. “It was a chance to get rid of all the old shelving and reconfigure the library with free-standing units.
“We were told if we could collect and store it, we could have it,” she said. Eastern Regional Libraries EO, Joseph Cullen, said the arrangement was a great add-on to the existing and growing collaboration between the school and ERL. “We have people who can’t access that library shelves in a way school kids can and we will now have more shelves at an appropriate level,” he said. A new fit-out for the library was not on the radar for the school, and principal Scott Tully said they just would not have been able to do it without the ERL gift. Uphill task for trail users By KATH GANNAWAY THE popularity and growth of mountain bike riding in the State Forest around Warburton is proving a double-edged sword. A meeting called by DELWP (Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning) on Thursday 19 November, in Wesburn highlighted some of the conflicting views and impacts that the growth of the sport has had and how it can be managed into the future. Representatives of Yarra Ranges Council and the Yarra Ranges Mountain Bikers (YRMTB) attended, along with local residents and representatives of other interest groups such as bushwalkers and environment groups. Issues raised included competing use by bike riders and walkers, damage to plants, building of illegal tracks and jumps and the failure of DELWP to prosecute over the years, increased traffic along Old Warburton Road, inadequate and inappropriate car parking, dust, noise and anti-social behaviour by some drivers and riders. DELWP presented a plan at the meeting that aims to address many of the issues raised. One of the major sticking points raised was DELWP’s inaction in the past in dealing
with illegal track building. DELWP regional manager Nick Ryan said while he was not across the history of reporting, DELWP was currently doing weekend patrols which were not detecting illegal track building. He said there was a misconception that it was illegal to ride in the state forest, but it was the building of tracks and jumps that was illegal. “If we find people digging tracks we will book them,” he said. Mr Ryan said as land manager of state forests DWLWP managed for a variety of uses which includes bike riding. “Our focus is on trying to fix problems that have arisen and to have control over what’s happening in the state forest and make sure bikes are compatible with all the other uses in the forest.” The formation of the Yarra Ranges Mountain Bikers at the instigation of DELWP was a move to collaborate with bike riders through a recognised advocacy group aimed at regulating the sport in the forest. YRMTB president Damian Auton put the lack of enforcement over the years down to a lack of resources by DELWP. “The resources, personnel and money invested in public
land management have been reduced over time. He said as an advocacy group representing some, but not all bike riders, they were working with DEWLP to have illegal trails authorised to conform to international standards including safety, sustainability and take into account cultural and sustainability aspects. “If we don’t all work together, what is going to happen is that illegal trail-building will continue,” he said. Resident Derry Talvainn called for more research into the impacts on the bush and the impact on walkers in relation to the proposal for more bike tracks in the bush. Peter Silis, another resident, called for a more open dialogue and said he had serious concerns about Yarra Ranges Council’s feasibility study. One resident wrote on the ‘input’ sheets “I used to walk the Backstairs Track weekly... can’t anymore due to the downhillers”. Concerns about fire risk were countered with a suggestion that there could be no activity on high fire risk days. The input gathered at the meeting will inform the DELWP’s draft plan and further consultation is planned for 2016.

RSL chief ’s fame sealed By JESSE GRAHAM DECADES of dedication to helping others have been rewarded again for Healesville’s Brian Luscombe, who was recently inducted into the Victorian RSL Hall of Fame. Mr Luscombe, Healesville RSL president for the past four years and member since the 1960s, was inducted into the hall of fame on Saturday 21 November, at Melbourne’s Sofitel hotel. Healesville RSL manager Gary Slater told the Mail that Brian was nominated for his “extensive” involvement with the branch, as well as his work in welfare, for which he drives members and social groups around the state on day-trips or to
medical appointments. “He takes them on day trips, overnight trips, he’ll visit nursing homes, RSL members, he’ll take them to their medical appointments,” he said. “As an example, he’s picked them up, driven them to Shepparton to meet family members, because the lady was too elderly to get on a train. Mr Slater said Mr Luscombe was “humbled” by the award, and that a group of about 20 people - including RSL staff and his grand-daughters - accompanied him to the awards night. Mr Luscombe said being inducted into the Hall of Fame was
an “honour”, and paid tribute to his wife, Anne, for her support. “It’s indeed an honour, it really is,” he said. “It’s not just for me - the staff are so good down there. Without Gary and Sue and the staff ... you can’t do it without their backing, you can’t. “And the main one I’ve got to thank is my dear wife for putting up with me never being home when I said I’m going to be - part of it belongs to her for putting up with me all these years.” He said that he joined the RSL after getting out of the army, coming back to Healesville in the mid1960s. As for his work in welfare, his
philosophy is simple: “I work on the theory that if someone needs a hand and I can do it, I just go ahead and do it”. “I don’t look to be out in the forefront, I’ll put it like that,” he said. Mr Luscombe was also named the Yarra Ranges Council 2015 Citizen of the Year at its annual Australia Day awards. At a council meeting on Tuesday 24 November, councillors Fiona McAllister and Jim Child congratulated Mr Luscombe on his induction in speeches at the end of the night. “It couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person,” Cr McAllister said.

Hospital case study meet
www.haysales.net.au 1209057-48-15
By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE residents are being urged to assess the future of hospital services in town, with the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) set to present its business case report. On Thursday 10 December, SHHAG will host a meeting at Healesville’s Memo Hall to discuss the outcome of its business case study on the Healesville Hospital. Undertaken by consultants, the case study was funded by about $90,000 in community donations and an election pledge from Casey MP Tony Smith. SHHAG member Jane Judd said the result was being named the “Options Paper”, and outlined hospital services needed by those in Healesville and its surrounds. “What they’ve identified is
where the community is currently going to get services and the services that currently could be provided up here - which is really in line with the government policy of having the right care in the right place at the right time,” Ms Judd said. “Our whole quest has been about making sure that the service profile at the hospital reflects all of the age groups at our hospital - that’s been our intent all along. “What we will be presenting to the community is - the service profile we’re being offered is this, this is what you’re currently needing and this is how it could work.” Works on the hospital started on 28 September, and are expected to run for 14-18 months. Eastern Health’s Yarra Ranges chief of clinical and site operations Lisa Lynch said the organisation was “not in a position” to comment, as it had not
seen the results of the business case. “This is despite our offers earlier in the process to work with the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group and the consultant engaged by the group,” Ms Lynch said. “We are confident that the redeveloped hospital and community health centre will deliver a range of services that meets the needs of the Healesville and Yarra Ranges communities, including a new renal dialysis unit, a new operating theatre, paediatric gym and paediatric consulting rooms.” Ms Judd said SHHAG was expected to meet with Health Minister Jill Hennessy on Monday 30 November to discuss the business case. The meeting will be held from 7pm on Thursday 10 December, at Healesville’s Memo Hall.

French’s Laundry has a proud history in the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges dating back to the early 1920’s when the workers on the Maroondah Dam asked Mrs Rackor to do their washing. For most of its’ 90 plus year history, French’s was owned by the related Rackor, French and Hort families. French’s in 1922 was a simple service, washing clothes for the men working on the construction of the Maroondah Dam. Dina Rackor and her daughter Wilma used a copper and a trough on the back verandah of their home. As more and more work came in they bought a commercial washing machine and a spinner and built a new construction. Healesville became the Mecca for Holiday makers, and this generated a higher demand for French’s Laundry. Ervine French from Deniliquin married Wilma Rackor and together they grew a thriving business that took pride in servicing local customers as it does today. Ervine retired in 1964. Beril French and Jack took over the business and sold it 1988. French’s under went several changes in ownership until the business tragically burnt to the ground in July 2012. Although the business name changed from Rackor, to the Continental in the early years, it will always be known to the locals as French’s Laundry. An iconic Healesville and surrounding area institution. It was this longevity and local history that attracted Rob and Ashley to purchase French’s Laundry. Rob and Ash have firm ideals about the type of business they wanted to buy, these included, a business that COULD NOT BE BOUGHT by an overseas company, providing a quality service to Hotel’s and B&B’s, a business with Family and community connections, a business that creates local employment (Kate and Jason are both local Healesvillians), plus a business that had stood the test of time French’s ticked all the boxes. Since taking over Frenchs Rob and Ash are working with and supporting SIGN FOR LIFE and employ hearing impaired duo Marissa and Gordon in the laundry. French’s Laundry also works with ALKIRA, who assist Down Syndrome adults to find meaningful paid work. Another and welcome community service, French’s donated 300 clean towels, 60 woolly blankets and 25 comfy pillows, to the City Salvation Army, so that homeless people did not go cold throughout this chilly winter. After the fire French’s Laundry relocated to London Drive in Bayswater, but with daily deliveries to the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges, sees itself very much a part of the local community. This historic 90 year old business services many local accommodation, food and beverage businesses in the across entire Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges. Rob and Ashely are building a future based on high quality products, old fashioned customer service and true family values.

Carers need to be taking good care of themselves CARERS are an invaluable part of the Australian community. A carer is a person who provides unpaid, regular and ongoing assistance to a dependent person. Often, a carer is a family member, friend or neighbour. However, it is important that the carer takes care of themselves. A person can experience ‘carer burnout’ if they don’t pay enough attention to their physical, emotional and psychological needs. Program manager at lifeAssist, Catherine Rihak, said it was important for carers to be involved in regular exercise and social activity to improve mental well-being. “We are pleased to be supporting carers to connect with other carers, their local
community, and with support services to assist them in their caring role,” Mrs Rihak said. To help carers maintain a healthy life balance, UnitingCare lifeAssist, in conjunction with Yarra Ranges Council, is providing a free fitness session for eligible carers. This free one-hour session is suitable for all fitness levels. After the class, carers can connect, relax and socialise with other carers over light refreshments. Carers will also hear more about support options available to them. This session will be held Tuesday, 8 December, at The Yarra Centre; Warburton Highwy, Yarra Junction, from 12pm-1.45pm. Respite can be arranged to help carers to attend the session.
It is open to eligible carers living in the Shire of Yarra Ranges, providing care to someone who is aged under 65 years living with autism, intellectual disability, mental illness or a severe and profound disability. This free session is a trial for a free carers’ fitness program to run weekly during school terms in 2016. To book your place, contact lifeAssist on 1300 ASSIST (1300 277 278).

Life was lived in top gear By KATH GANNAWAY KATHY Higgins’ death from an aneurism at just 40-years of age, on 30 October, was devastating. But, she would have no regrets. She had packed more than many people who live twice that long into her time here - which included being life-long partner to Anthony Randall and mum to Aaron and Chloe. Characterised by her cheeky smile, steely determination, her forthright attitude and sheer love and enjoyment of life, Kathy’s connection with her family and friends was celebrated at a service attended by more than 400 people on 5 November. Among the tears and grief at such a sudden loss, were heart-warming tributes and funny stories of life with Kathy. Kathleen Jane Higgins was born on 1 April, 1975, at Healesville Hospital, the youngest of Bill and Vicky Higgins four children, Kim, Tracey, Michael (deceased) and Kathy. Growing up in Badger Creek she was involved in pony club, netball and basketball. Here she lived for speedway. Driving around the family’s track put her way ahead of the game when at 11 she convinced the organisers at Alexandra Speedway that they should let her drive.
The official minimum age was 12, but she got on the track and never looked back. It was a passion she shared with her parents, sister Tracey and with Anthony. She raced up until a couple of years ago and won her fair share of Victorian championships and other titles over the years. Kathy was secretary for the Super Sedan Association for a time and on Saturday the association will honour her with a memorial race at Moama. Kathy went to Badger Creek Primary School, then to Billanook and Lilydale Technical School. She became a mum at 17, and she would have been enormously proud of the brave, funny tribute Aaron paid her at the service. Kathy met Anthony 21 years ago and with the birth of Chloe, now 16, the family was complete. Even more complete with the family staffies, Bill and Bangers, which Kathy adored. If life hadn’t been so busy, Anthony said they would probably have got married some day. They got engaged about 20 years ago, but were just too busy living life on the Don Valley property that was home, to get around to setting a date. One of the funny stories that Aaron
Kathy Higgins, a dynamo in life. And on the track. told was of Kathy’s relatively new passion - prospecting. He told of coming home to find holes all over the back yard, or his mum down in the creek in her waders convinced that that big, so far elusive, nugget was just waiting to be dug up or scooped up. A devoted mum, Kathy wore the title of ‘mum’s taxi’ with as much pride as any of her super sedan titles. She trained the juniors when Aaron and Chloe were playing netball and
basketball and umpired the netball with the YVMDFNL. She loved Facebook, which she used to maximum effect last year, she organised a reunion of her generation (and anyone who wanted to be part of the party). She was a clever and diligent worker, doing taxation returns, managing the BP Service Station in Healesville for a couple of years and then establishing her own fish and chip shop in Launching Place.
She was studying in recent times to become an accountant. Anthony laughed when asked to describe Kathy’s personality. “Well, she was very strong willed, you would have to give her that,” he said. “She said it how it was. “I suppose, she just loved life ... mainly loved doing her own thing, especially with us.” Kathy was laid to rest at Healesville Cemetery, reunited with Michael who she adored.

Film society set for big homecoming
To kill a Mockingjay
By PETER DOUGLAS
The Hunger Games, Mockingjay: Part 2 (M) Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Donald Sutherland and Julianne Moore
CROYDON Film Society (CFS) has announced it will return to Croydon after many years. Next year, the society will screen a selection of art-house films at the Croydon Cinemas. This popular society, with more than 500 members, has been running successfully for 60 years, bringing quality cinema to the outer eastern fringes of Melbourne. Society president Frank Davin said the society had been happy screening at Reading Cinemas, with the Chirnside Park Reading team being supportive. “CFS began life in the Croydon Hall, then, adapting to changing circumstances, moved to Mooroolbark Community Centre, to Croydon Twin Cinemas, and then to Reading Cinemas at Chirnside Park, before now returning to Croydon for its 2016 season of films,” he said. However, increased hiring costs have led to the decision to move back to Croydon. “The society is looking forward to working with George Aleksiunas, Croydon Cinemas manager, and enjoying the excellent facilities there,” he said. The society is looking to gain new members of all ages, particularly younger people, who may find Croydon Cinemas more accessible. Films will screen at 7pm on Monday nights 20 times during the year. Annual membership fees
Society president Frank Davin with manager of Croydon Cinemas George Aleksiunus and Society treasurer Richard Bell. 147682 are reasonable and cover the 20 films, with a Sunday kids special in the middle of the year. Subscription also includes
a bi-monthly electronic newsletter providing film reviews and other film news, a large calendar poster of the year’s scheduled films.
If you enjoy talking about films, you can join the casual discussion group meeting at the venue after each film. For a membership appli-
cation and information on the films and dates for 2016, check out www.croydonfilms. org.au or email enquiries@ croydonfilms.org.au
MOCKINGJAY Part 2 is a solid conclusion to the Hunger Games franchise, but won’t satisfy everybody. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), the face of the rebellion in Panem, leads a daring mission to assassinate President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and finally bring down the oppressive Capitol government. Mockingjay Part 2 is a film of great moments and performances strung together moderately well. Lawrence balances Katniss’s steely determination and war-weary stress flawlessly. Julianne Moore provides shady political intrigue as rebel leader President Coin, complementing the charismatic sadist President Snow. Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) is still a very redundant character (and continues a pointless love triangle), but his psychological trauma, as he fights past his brutal Capitol conditioning, is riveting. Drawing inspiration from outside sources, the inventive traps used against Katniss’s squad are reminiscent of Saw and Cube, and the claustrophobic sewer sequence has shades of Aliens. With the film essentially being one long third act, the pacing will be a make-or-break aspect for many viewers. There is a lot of waiting, sleeping and careful preparation on the part of Katniss’s squad. I’m torn on whether these quiet stretches enhance the realism or dilute the tension; it’s really down to personal preference. Splitting the Mockingjay novel into two parts was unnecessary, but part two is still an engaging end to the series. - Seth Hynes

CHRISTMAS
It’s a rustic love FOR the Love of Rustic offers something a little different for the region, with unique furniture items. For something a little special, available is a fantastic range of either hand-painted furniture, custom designed or recycled furniture. Business owner Rebecca Currie said there was something new in the premises all the time, which was sure to keep customers happy and interested. The business stocks a healthy offering of rustic furniture, ladders, old treasures and rustic wedding decorations. Rebecca said customers
were spoilt for choice. “We offer custom work for all customers, pain that lasts and great wax to finish,” she said. She said the townsfolk had embraced the concept, which was pleasing to see. “I have to say that the people in Monbulk have welcomed me into their little town and it’s great,” she said. “I love being creative with furniture, everything needs a second chance at life.” “It’s just myself, my husband ‘Red’ and two children, Tyler and Brody.” Rebecca said it had been fantastic to watch a dream turn into a reality.
“I started painting in my own garage and now have my own shop,” she said. “This shows that dreams can happen if you put your mind to it.” The business will be involved in the upcoming Merry Monbulk Street Party. Opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 9.30am to 5.30pm (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). For the Love of Rustic is located at 3/37-39 Main Road, Monbulk. CHRISTMAS See them for a personal travel service ALL I WANT FOR
TRAVELLERS Place was established nine years ago in order to create a friendly, personal travel service where your holidays are planned by the most professional and dedicated staff. Travellers Place is a member of the Travellers Choice group, a large Australian travel organisation that has many affiliated travel companies giving Travellers Place access to their products. The business knows the region and its residents, including those in Belgrave, Upwey, Tecoma, Selby, Upper Ferntree Gully and all the areas that comprise the Dandenong Ranges. Between Tina and Annette, they have done a lot of travel over the past couple of years. The experienced consultants are keen to assist in making your dream holiday or business needs come true. Some of the areas of their trips have been China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Fiji, London, Italy, Hungary and France. They have also experienced quite a few cruises on different cruise lines. Tina, the owner of Travellers Place, together with Annette, plans every holiday as if it was their own. Tina and her family are locals and are proud of their association with the community.
When you plan your holiday with Tina and Annette, you can be sure that it’s going to be hassle-free. The good times need not begin when you touch down - it starts when you walk through their door. Their mission is to provide a travel service to their valued clients that you would be happy to recommend to family and friends. Travellers Place will be conducting a “classic car” tour of Northern Italy in September 2016. Imagine driving classic cars through the Italian countryside. Enjoying the thrill of driving an MG, BMW or Alfa just to name a few through the vineyards of Tuscany, visiting the Lamborghini, Ferrari and Ducati Museums and more. Enjoying the shopping in Milan, visiting the place of Romeo and Juliet and travelling down the Grand Canal in Venice - these are some of the areas we will be travelling through. This tour will be fully escorted from Australia by Tina and her husband - this is a small group tour of only 20 guests. Feel free to call them on (03) 9754 1655 to experience the Travellers Place difference.

For cuddly friends and more By PETER DOUGLAS TEDDIES Toys and Gifts has come to Yarra Glen. So, come on in and meet Brian and all his cuddly friends. Brian has been in the soft toy industry for over 25 years and knows how to source the best quality teddies, toys and gifts at the best prices. Brian has previously had shops in Melbourne, Old Lilydale Market, Olive Tree Shopping Centre, and main street Lilydale. Brian said the shop would help deliver something unique for the township and the region. “Yarra Glen and the Yarra Valley need a shop of fun, so come and join in and enjoy, there’s something for children of all ages,” he said. Brian has teddies for all occasions, including newborns, birthdays, graduation, or even for a friend just needing a hug. Of course, don’t forget what a fantastic, thoughtful gift that teddies will make for this Christmas. Collective and limited bears like Steiff, Hermann, Charlie Bears and Sliver Tag are sure to put a smile on all faces. Brian said their realistic range of dogs and cats had even caught the attention of real dogs passing by the shop, often making them look twice. There are plenty of options available for customers, from cute and cuddly teddies to realistic wild animals. Also, there are Australiana gifts ranging from collectable Oz Legend model cars, hand-crafted porcelain dolls by a local artist, and a variety of gifts and toys. Brian said you could even have fun with their interactive animated Elmo and Peek A Boo Teddy, Classic Peter Rabbit, and the popular Paddington Bear and Gollywogs and much more. Teddies Toys and Gifts is located at 16 Bell Street, Yarra Glen (opposite The Grand Hotel).

CHRISTMAS Now, your seat is guaranteed ALL I WANT FOR
CROYDON Cinemas is introducing reserved seating for peak sessions from 17 December. The ability to guarantee a seat at the cinema will make life easier for movie fans, who will no longer have to endure stress with the uncertainty of guaranteeing a seat or having to wait in long queues. Reserved or numbered seats remove any doubt as to the availability of good seats at peak times, enabling cinemagoers to roll up just before the movie starts or straight to the candy bar. Director of Croydon Cinemas, George Aleksiunas, said the change meant families and groups of friends heading to the movies would no longer have to separate from one another just to find a seat. “No more will families need to go searching for seats just to sit together during our very busy school holiday periods,” Mr Aleksiunas said. The new numbered system allows movie-goers to log on to the Croydon Cinemas website and choose their seats to ensure they have the seats that they want. “This system helps us effectively manage crowds safely and responsibly,” he said. “The end result is better service from informed decisions.” This comes with perfect timing with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is set to be one of the biggest movie releases in history and has already sold hundreds of seats for both 3D and 2D sessions in the opening week. Mr Aleksiunas said the response from moviegoers so far had been positive. “Our customers are increasingly planning their visits to the cinema in advance for movies and events,” Mr Aleksiunas said. Mr Aleksiunas said there would not be any increases in price associated with the reserve seating policy. For further information, contact George Aleksiunas on 0409 410 186. Croydon Cinemas is located at Level 1, 3-5 Hewish Road, Croydon.

Print does the job on employment Newspapers remain a popular medium for job hunters searching for their next role despite the wide choice of domestic and international alternatives online. Emma data shows 1.4 million job seekers use print newspapers each month. Job seekers from certain industries are more likely to use print newspapers for job hunting. Those looking for work in public administration are 46 percent more likely to use print newspaper’s employment sections with similar results for mining (44 percent), and teachers and lecturers (27 percent) more likely to use print. Businesses looking to find the right candidate should employ print newspapers as part of their search, or risk missing out on a large pool of potential candidates.
ONCE again, Santa was the star of Wandin’s Sunset Festival. He did, however, have plenty of competition for the title. The festival held at the Wandin North shopping centre, and organised by the Wandin traders and local community groups drew hundreds of people, mostly locals, keen to kick off the festive season in their own community. Lots of stalls with Christmas goodies and fantastic food, rides and games for the kids, a demonstration of the jaws of life by the Wandin Fire Brigade Rescue volunteers, classic cars, pony rides, the Wandin/Seville Community Wandin youngster Ethan on the bucking bronc. Bank colouring competition, raffles, locally grown produce, fantastic live music on stage, and the grand fireworks finale made for the best ever Sunset Festival.

Test of strength and character By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE gruelling Vertical K SkyRace put runner against cyclist on 29 November when racers took off from Warburton for the second major cycling event in Warburton in two weeks. Cyclists climbed 1077 metres from their starting point in Warburton to the summit of Mount Donna Buang against runners who climbed 1098 metres.
Sam Maffett, General Manager of Rapid Ascent who bought this event to the Yarra Valley, said the day was a huge success. “Today was a real test of strength and of character for all competitors,” he said. “This style of event is not for everyone; you have to be able to really push through the pain barrier.
Ralph Street was the first runner to the top of the Mountain.
“In saying that, the course passes through some absolutely stunning rainforest and it was great to seeing competitors spurring each other on and providing support to help others reach the summit.” While the events bought in runners and cyclists from all over, many locals got involved in the event as well. Milli Troon from Healesville com-

peted in the running component of the Vertical K and said it was a challenging but rewarding event. “It was absolutely exhausting but just brilliant, the scenery was wonderful,” she said. “The fog set in about three quarters of the way up the hill but it made for a magical, mystical setting. It’s so nice to have an event like this in our area.”
Winning cyclists Georgina Beech and Cyrus Monk
Jeff Gill from the Warburton Advancement League was a volunteer on the day and said the event was of benefit to local groups as well. “It was brilliant,” he said. “Community groups such as the Advancement League, Redwoods Centre and the CFA supplied volunteers and got up to $80 per volunteer for their organisations.”

YARRA GLEN BOWLS DIVISION 1 moved into fourth place after defeating another top of the ladder team at Bundoora RSL. Winning four on the trot and up against opponents that are either first or second on the ladder, they started slowly with a difficult deficit at half time however they managed to hold tight and claw their way back to a 3 point victory. How does this happen? The Division 3 side had an absolutely blinder rink winning 54 to 1 but even that wasn’t enough to win the game - one of the biggest rinks wins in club history even the scoreboard wasn’t able to cope! Midweek Division 1 secured their first win for a while against Boronia, Nick Suttie has been the pick of the bowlers all season both Tuesdays and Saturdays top teams, showing consistent form and leading the way with his experience and quiet manner. Coolness under fire WARBURTON GOLF IN any sporting club, winning your club’s championship is the ultimate test of skill, consistency and coolness under fire. To win it once is a huge thrill - but the Open Champion for the seventh time is Paul Mason. Just to add to the enormity of the achievement, he did it off a scratch handicap. But it needs to be recorded that young tyro Jon Cross ate into Mason’s lead with two great closing rounds of 70 and 71. In the end, Paul won from Jon and Andrew Williams (five times champion) by a handful of shots. In the graded events, the end result created two different finishes. B Grade winner was Steuart Hawke, who led from start to finish, due to three excellent rounds to begin with. New boy Dave Wappitt had a great tournament, leading the ‘chasing group’ to finish a creditable second, only seven shots adrift. C Grade provided the close result. Three or four players were in the running until Round 3 was completed. In that round, Mike Dobson shot an incredible 87, he then had a six-shot buffer. But, then along comes another new member, Steve Noonan, eventually pinching the title by one shot. The equally important East Hills trophy, for the best Nett score over the first 3 Rounds, was a compensation win for Mike Dobson. His scores, less

The Open section was always going to be a two-horse race between young gun Kim Kennedy and the consistent Meredith Nursey. In the end, Kim recorded 3 rounds for a total of 244, that ranged from good to steady. Meredith fell away on the last day. Kim has
now won her second title in a row at the grand old age of 20. The Elva Eddy Nett event was taken out by Lynda Dickson. Lynda had a sensational last round, shooting an 86 off the stick for a nett 66. This great effort saw Lynda finish on a nett 210, which comfortably accounted for Kim and Meredith’s totals. Trish Eldridge finished 4th, with a steady nett of 228.

YARRA Valley Stars proved too strong for a young Melbourne Cricket Club. Playing MCC at Launching Place, they won the toss and put MCC in to bat. Donna Moore once again showed the way in the bowling, taking 4/25 off her 10 overs, Amanda Morrison taking 2/15 off 8 and Ebony Camilleri took her first wicket 1/10 off 3 - getting MCC 9 for 123 at 40 overs. Yarra Valley opened the batting with Donna (56) and Michaela Jago (36) who finished with a 99 run partnership, Erica Slattery supported the girls with 15 runs to pass MCC’s score in 26 overs. Now sitting at fourth, the next round will see the Yarra Valley play a double-header T20 against Bayswater Park and Ringwood, both away on Sunday.

BarZup win Challenge - again By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE BOWLS HEALESVILLE Bowling Club’s Corporate Challenge has been won for a second year by the dynamic BarZup team. The success of the event, now in its third year, has bowled everyone over - organisers and players. “We had 20 teams playing on two rinks and will be running another challenge in February, because we have had so much demand,” said bowls club organiser, Charles Hort. Teams of three players pay $10 each to play in the Wednesday evening competition which brings together businesses ranging from retailers and professionals to tradies and bespoke businesses like BarZup which operate a portable bar for events and parties. Owner Geoff Stock said the Corporate Challenge had become a Wednesday night ritual.
After playing cricket together the BarZup team jumped at the chance to try their hand at bowls. Geoff said the format with each business playing a different business each week was great from a business point of view, but that it was also a really good familyfriendly night out. “It’s a great each week getting around and meeting people in the local community, the people who really make the town tick,” he said. “During winter when you bump into people down the street, you have that connection and people really miss it during the winter months.” Mr Hort said the event will help pay for replacement of the $150,000 synthetic green that will need to be replaced in about 10-years’ time. “It’s not just about the fund-raising though, it’s also a fun night and it’s great to have all these bowlers
on the greens and seeing them enjoying the game so much,” he said. They have also gained a few new members for the club. Most people are new to the game and the bowling club members are assigned on the first couple of nights, or when new players stand in for a team, to show them the basics. “A lot of people are finding out that there’s more to the game and perhaps they thought, and they enjoy the challenge as much as the social event,” Mr Hort said. The club runs a Twilight Bowls session on Wednesday evenings that is open to anyone who wants to play the game but not get involved in competition bowls. Anyone businesses wanting to sign on for the Summer Corporate Challenge should contact the club on 5962 2093.

Batsmen’s day in the sun BATSMEN around the Yarra Valley were greeted with excellent conditions as the sun shone. They didn’t fail to deliver as all three games in the premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, were won by the team batting second. Warburton-Millgrove were the worst placed of the chasing team, having allowed Mount Evelyn to post a healthy total of 256. The conditions at Mount Evelyn are fairly favourable for batsmen, while the Burras would’ve set themselves for a long day at the crease in a bid to wear down Mount Evelyn’s bowling attack. They managed to do this early, as a solid opening partnership saw off the opening bowlers and a bit of shine off the ball. The game took a turn in Mount Evelyn’s favour as their toil in the field was rewarded with two quick wickets falling to have the visitors precariously positioned at 3/62. With the fall of the third wicket, Mick Walker joined David Lever at the wicket, and with neither player having scored, the Rovers felt the door was open to press open the advantage. This wasn’t to be as the brilliant pair set about their work in a methodical way rarely giving a chance as they would bat their team to an impressive victory. In the end, the pair combined for a masterful 196-run unbeaten partnership, which concluded with Lever (111*) making a masterful, chanceless century which was highlighted by a combination of blistering strokeplay and watchful defence. Walker (82*) offered the support of all his years of experience as he timed his innings to perfection to see his partner to the winning score with seven wickets in hand. The loss leaves Mount Evelyn in a precarious position, with the top four quickly leaving their sight but a bye next round gives them the opportunity to take stock, with some fine tuning needed before the Christmas break. Warburton-Millgrove on the other hand will be buoyed by the successful chase and will be looking to build on the win against a battling Hoddles Creek. Hoddles Creek didn’t have enough runs on the board against Yarra Junction. Without early wickets, their defence of 148 looked feeble from the beginning. After racing to 0/24 overnight, the Wombats were able to remove the dangerous Cam Spaulding early in proceedings. However, with his wicket, the home team weren’t able to create enough opportunities. Yarra Junction captain Quinton Hodkinson (65*) joined reliable opener Marcus Hottes (40) at the crease and the pair put together a decisive partnership that all but secured victory. Hottes once again delivered an innings of little fuss, but plenty of grit and reliability as he supported the free scoring Hodkinson who again provided a reminder of his danger with the bat if he is allowed to get into the contest. Unfortunately, Hottes lost his wicket before securing his team a victory, but that was the only real glitch in the finish, as the Eagles strolled to a
six wicket victory. After a promising start to the season, Hoddles Creek now find themselves in danger of falling off the pace as teams start to find their feet in this season. They will find the challenge that is WarburtonMillgrove a tough one. Yarra Junction on the other hand are starting to deliver the goods and their confidence will be sky high as they face Healesville in key contest between two teams that are on the improve. Healesville provided the surprise result of the round as they eased past the previously undefeated Woori Yallock. The Bloods did the damage on day one as they skittled a formidable Tigers batting line-up for a disappointing 133. With the fall of an early wicket late on day one, everyone was reminded that this contest was still up for grabs if the wicket taking power of the Tigers could get on a roll. Early wickets did arrive for the visitors and some wobbles did appear for Healesville as speedster Jackson Wright looked to have found his rhythm. As is the case with small chases, it only takes one decent partnership to see the total reduced quickly. As captain Ash Hamer (33*) joined brother Scott (50*), the pair weren’t about to let this golden opportunity slip. Ash backed up his efforts with the ball from week one leading his team from the front from ball one in this impressive victory, while Scott continues to prove his value with the willow with a match winning half century. Woori Yallock will be left licking their wounds after a disappointing display and could see an inexperienced Seville as an opportunity to flex their muscles. On the other hand, Healesville have a tantalising match up against Yarra Junction that should be billed as match of the round as both sides will be keen to further their claims to a top four position.
