for assistance following the thunderstorms. More than 100 of these were from the Ipswich area. The majority of call-outs were for smashed windows, fallen trees and powerlines and leaking roofs. SES volunteers respond to hundreds of requests during peak storm activity. They are now asking those who need assistance to be patient because most SES tasks are not quick jobs and often extensive work and time is required to attend to storm damage. For storm and flood emergency assistance, contact the State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500 and in a life-threatening emergency dial triple zero (000). More pictures on page 5.

debris on footpaths and public land around Warwick. The council’s street sweepers also undertook the clean-up of leaf litter on the streets as a result of the storm. Residents were advised, however, that Southern Downs Regional Council would not collect green waste, such as trees and vegetation, or materials that come from private properties following the weekend’s storms and would only clean up street trees affected by the storms. Residents were advised to take their green waste and other materials to the council’s waste transfer and waste management facilities. FIVE SES crews from across the Southern Downs were kept busy on Sunday afternoon as the area said goodbye to spring with a damaging afternoon storm. Jamie Goodwin, who was acting SES Controller on Sunday when the storm hit, said crews from Stanthorpe and Wallangarra joined the three Warwick crews to respond to calls. “We have 40 members on the ground,” he said of the storm which was the SES’s first major incident of the year. The crews responded to 35 calls on Sunday and a further 17 on Monday. He said while there was one house reporting damage to the roof, the majority of calls were for fallen

trees and windows broken by the hail. Meanwhile, as the clean-up continued through Monday and Tuesday, Southern Downs Regional Council’s Director Engineering Services Peter See said the council’s parks and gardens staff were kept busy undertaking clean-up works in the parks around the Warwick town area, with Victoria Park receiving most of the damage to trees. He said the shade sails over the fitness equipment on the approach to O.O. Madsen Bridge were damaged and council staff erected barrier mesh to close the area until repairs could be undertaken. Jumpers and Jazz cash-in

Casey’s tips

By DANE LILLINGSTONE

The independent study revealed the festival injects over $1.1 million over 10 days. Picture: TERRY WEST

AN independent review conducted and paid for by Tourism and Events Queensland has shown that Jumpers and Jazz 2015 injected over $1.1 million into the local economy over the 10-day festival. The independent study has broken down the festival by demographic, time spent in the region and the cost effect it had on local businesses. Over 35,000 people attended this year’s festival with 17,750 of them believed to have come from outside the Southern Downs Region. Hotels and motels in the area received over $758,000 from visitors while local businesses are believed to have

received over $383,000 during this year’s events. The dominant age group that attended the festival was people aged 30-59, which made up 72 per cent of the audience. Jumpers and Jazz also rated highly in community satisfaction with most people responding that the festival is ‘important to the local area’. Chairman of the Jumpers and Jazz Advisory Team Rob Hamilton said it was good to hear the feedback. “Community pride was one of the main focuses of the festival, he said. “It’s excellent to hear that sort of feedback. He said as far as next year

goes, planning was well underway. “We already have bus companies booking for tours for next year’s Jumpers and Jazz with accommodation and restaurants being fully booked on some nights, he said. “I really encourage people interested in getting involved in any element of the festival, to contact me at the Visitor Information Centre. The Jumpers and Jazz Advisory Team is made up of Lynn Bryson, Robyn Frazer, Karina Devine, Shelia Stebbings and Mr Hamilton. The first flyer for the festival is due to be released in February next year.

SANTA, a reindeer or two and lots of friends made for a colourful sight in Warwick on Saturday morning. Big crowds lined the streets to see the man in red arrive pulled by reindeer and followed by a live Nativity scene, complete with camels and wise men, as well as lots of other colourful and excited locals. It is the second year that the event has been hosted by the Warwick Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Rose City Shoppingworld. Rose City marketing manager and chamber representative Louise de Lissa hailed the fun event as a big success. “There was a lot more people in the main street, she said. “We are really happy. It went off without a hitch. She said the crowd was up to six deep around Santa’s reindeer display and many people

She’s simply divine By DANE LILLINGSTONE MUSEUMS and Galleries Queensland has announced the winners of the 2015 Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards with local Karina Devine taking home a top prize. Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine was announced joint winner in recognition of her outstanding achievement in the category of ‘Individuals - Paid’. Karina has been heavily involved in the Warwick Art Gallery and the Warwick community especially in her role as creative director of Warwick’s Jumpers and Jazz in July Festival. She has also worked hard in securing grants as demonstrated by the Portraits of a Tea Cosy touring exhibition, which was initiated by the gallery and toured to national venues from 2013 to 2015. Karina gave thanks to the selection panel for honouring her with the

Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine with her new award. award. “I am truly humbled by the excellent work of my fellow nominees and that makes this award even more special to me,” she said. “Our sector always has its challenges but it is very rare to come

across anyone working in the arts who is not passionate and obsessively dedicated. “The challenges can sometimes seem impossible to master when you work in the country, even more so when there are economic or political

issues that directly impact our operations and partnerships. “But I am immensely grateful for the opportunities I have had in working for regional art galleries for the past 20 years. “I feel supported on a daily basis at my work by my staff, volunteers, partners in crime and collaborators. I would like to thank the community of Warwick for their support.” The awards celebrate the outstanding achievements, professional excellence, and innovation of Queensland’s museum and gallery sector. The Warwick Art Gallery will be holding its first ever youth exhibition in a few weeks, which will provide an opportunity for young people aged 6-25 a chance to exhibit in the gallery. Entries will close on Friday 4 December. You can get an application form by visiting the gallery or downloading one online from their website or Facebook page.

Concerns over water supply put to the test By TANIA PHILLIPS AN investigation is underway into a possible contamination of the Allora water supply. However the Southern Downs Regional Council said the Darling Downs Public Health Unit had also been advised although at this stage there was “no cause for alarm”. Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell said the concern of an Allora resident about her child contracting cryptosporidiosis from the Allora water supply was raised with the council on Thursday by local media and social media. “At the time council was contacted

by the media, we had not received any direct complaints nor been notified by any person, including the resident, or agency, that there was an issue or concern with the water supply in Allora or Warwick, and in particular with cryptosporidiosis,” Cr Blundell said. “Nevertheless, council officers immediately acted to investigate the report, contacting the Darling Downs Public Health Unit, which advised that there were no reported increases in notification of cases of cryptosporidiosis across the Southern Downs. “The Darling Downs Public Health Unit has also advised that there has been no cryptosporidiosis cluster increase, but they will continue to

monitor the situation, and will certainly notify council if there is any cause for concern. “The water supplied to Allora comes from the Warwick water supply, which goes through the Warwick Water Treatment Plant, and this has been the case since October 2014 when the Allora water main project was completed. “The council carries out regular sampling of our water supplies across the region for E.Coli and the results have been within the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines for a very long time. Recent testing of the water supply had produced no evidence of any contamination so far.

“However, since Thursday, Council officers have been conducting additional E.Coli water tests and specific investigative water testing for cryptosporidiosis will be undertaken. These tests will be carried out over the period to Monday, 7 December 2015. The specific samples for Cryptosporidiosis will be sent Queensland Health for analysis, and results are likely to take a few days,” Cr Blundell said. The council encourages any residents with concerns or problems with the water or wastewater supply to contact 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) so that officers can investigate, and the council can ensure the quality of the water supply is maintained.

In brief House ransacked, cash stolen IN the early hours of Thursday, offenders broke into a house in Connor Street, Stanthorpe, near the intersection of Pancor Road while the female occupant slept, according to Stanthorpe police. The intruders searched cupboards throughout the house and also a vehicle parked in the internal garage before decamping with a quantity of cash and alcohol. The offenders took considerable time endeavouring to force open various windows and doors before gaining access through a sliding window.

Backpackers, locals involved in brawl POLICE have intervened in a large brawl involving backpackers and locals about 1.40am Sunday morning outside the Central Hotel, Stanthorpe. Five backpackers were issued $706 Public Nuisance Infringement Notices, and police will be charging two locals in coming days.

Drug drivers nabbed FOUR drug drivers and one drink driver were intercepted by Stanthorpe Police during the past week and will all face court in December.

Failed states

On the radar

WITH the cruel and callous republican fantasy of Australia’s pack of well-heeled chardonnay socialists and career politicians yet again being forced down the throats of the rest of us, one question comes unavoidably to mind: how is it possible for Australia, our Australia, to somehow become more Australian by abandoning our own native 227-year-old Australian British Monarchy, and embracing the necromantically resurrected political ideology of two foreign countries, the long-dead failed states of Greece and Rome? In Australia’s two and a quarter centuries of history, we have never been a republic. Republicanism has nothing to do with us. It is alien to our Australian culture and heritage. Our great nation was built as a British Kingdom from the ground up. Australia is the New Britannia of the South Seas; not some pathetic imitation of America and France. The kingdom of Australia has her own patriotic identity. We have no need of foreign philosophies. Before the referendum of A.D. 1999, Malcolm Turnbull and the Australian Republican Movement’s other leaders promised, avowed, and declared that if the republicans failed to win, they would respect the will of Australia’s people in retaining our Monarchical state, and would dissolve their own movement and acknowledge their allegiance to our gracious Queen accordingly. However the republican movement did not dissolve itself as promised. Nor did the republicans acknowledge or respect the declared will of Australians in remaining a Monarchy. Neither did Malcolm Turnbull or the other leading republicans forsake the active promotion of their treasonable ideology, and return to a sincere allegiance to the Crown, as they had promised they would. The Lord God Almighty swore that the British Throne would stand forever, (Jeremiah 33.17), and His Word never returns to Him void (Isaiah 55.11). Her Majesty soundly defeated Mr Turnbull in A.D. 1999, and if he insists on a rematch, She will do so again. God Save the Queen! Steven Harrison, Esquire, Warwick.

MY “off the radar” letter of 19 November regarding the Brisbane Lions and Suns AFL games coverage on free to air TV might, just might, end up being aired on Channel 7 Mate after all. A letter to hand asking for loyal supporters to stick by the Lions was appreciated by a long-standing friend of the club, me. On another subject entirely, the new Prime Minister of Australia will surely be suffering from over-exposure on television! He fills the screen here, there and everywhere waving his hands about and my free to air television demands the off button! To miss the former Prime Minister and his accurate and timely few words and infinite wisdom and spot-on definitions is certainly proved as the war of the worlds appear on the horizon. How quickly fear grows when the Head of State is not doing much other than being seen! Melba Morris, Allora.

Competition policy IT IS now some 20 years since Prof Hilmer presented his “Competition Policy Report” and like all good Canberra policies we are now seeing the unforeseen consequences of its implementation. While his report was the basis for the divestment of state assets (no monopolies irrespective of who owned them) which was intended, it has had significant effects the smaller country towns and regional shopping centres where local business traffic depends to a large extent on the customer traffic through the shops. What happens is that what were specialty line shops, such as butchers, bakers and the like, usually family businesses had some form of protection provided their service and product were up to scratch. There was of course competition between similar businesses in the vicinity and that maintained the standard. But it is not only the smaller businesses that need and seek the volume of customer traffic. Larger businesses also require that traffic and will enter into a specialty form of trade, particularly the high volume end just to increase traffic. By doing so the specialty business down the road or in the same shopping centre bears a comparable

Connecting people and communities SFT Email your letter to: newsdesk@freetimes.com.au loss of traffic and particularly incidental sales. The consequence quite often is that the specialty shop ultimately loses that traffic and becomes unviable. This is of no benefit to the consumer as the less profitable and variety of items will not be picked up by the larger stores and consequently the service is lost. There is no regulatory fix for this and only the public can resolve the matter. So the solution is for the public to try to utilise the service of the specialty stores wherever possible and by doing so may help to ensure that the smaller specialty shops like the butcher, baker, chemist and newsagent stay in business and continue to provide a service that otherwise would be lost. Jim Flesser, Allora.

THE grain debate hasn’t been restricted to the community with Southern Downs Regional Council unable to decide on how a new storage facility will be handled. In 2013, the council approved a development permit to GrainX CEO Chris Hood for an agricultural hub for the storage and transportation of grain. The development, located on land at WariwckAllora Road, Allora, will enable grain to be transported by truck or rail to the site and then be loaded into shipping containers and trucked to port. Debate in the meeting surrounded on how council would require the development to offset the visual impact that the new facility would have. The discussion ranged from planting trees along the area to a dirt mound with shrubs planted on top. Negotiations have been back and forth between the council and GrainX’s Chris Hood with Mr Hood since stating he wanted to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and also wanted to stack storage containers five high at the site. Council planning and environment director Ken Harris said the development would have a visible impact on the area. “It is a fairly large and visible facility,” he said “The development will have a large visual impact. We’re trying to minimise the impact. This is not a small use.” Deputy mayor Ross Bartley said farm produc-

Cr Glyn Rees said people had to accept the benefits of grain production. “At some time we have to accept these agricultural activities are keeping us afloat,” he said. It was decided that the matter will be deferred to the Department of Transport and Main Roads. In other GrainX news, a progress report on the Memorandum of Understanding was placed in the confidential section of the meeting despite Cr Mackenzie questioning the decision. “The community members need to discuss it with the community, otherwise what’s the point of them being there?” he said. Cr Meiklejohn is on the committee and said the two community members on the committee agreed to keep it confidential. “The committee agreed to have it this way,” he said. According to Landcare, Matthew provides native bee hives and services around the country, including school talks, radio interviews and storytelling and sharing his passion and joy for these little Australian treasures. He is collaborating with a number of scientists around the country who are studying these bees. The workshop begins at 9.30am and will run to approximately to 3.30pm (QLD time). There is a cost associated with this workshop for catering and venue hire of $30 per

THE Queensland Touring Film Festival skills and programs have been put into action on the Southern Downs this week to deliver filmmaking workshops at Warwick and Stanthorpe. The QTFF aims to lift the spirits of regional communities across Queensland through the magic of film. The festival aims to teach budding film makers in regional

and rural communities that there are no boundaries to what they can achieve through film. And just what the creative minds of the Southern Downs have come up with will be unveiled at a special screening of locally-made films at Warwick Art Gallery on Friday. The free event will feature a large outdoor screen and a relaxed atmosphere with visitors

encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets. The gallery volunteers will be on-hand with a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the children’s art club. The event starts at 5.30pm with the first film to be screened at 6.30pm. For more information phone Warwick Art Gallery on (07) 4661 0434.

Women making a big difference A NEW organization focused on helping empower people to live happier and healthier lives will be coming to the Southern Downs. The Positive Empowerment Group features three women who give talks as part of their program to help improve self-confidence, self-esteem and make people stronger, clearer and in turn make more empowered decisions. Director of Positive Empowerment Group Gayl Regina said perception was important. “What we think and feel about ourselves and how we see ourselves in the

world is a fundamental key that determines our ability to live a happy, productive life,” she said. Gayl is one of three professional personal empowerment facilitators who are running a workshop series titled Rebuilding Self Image for women in the community. This program brings together three diverse and talented women - Monica Kennedy, a qualified holistic counsellor and Colour-n-Art therapist with a background in nursing, Marnee Kent, an art therapist and story teller with indigenous heritage, and Gayl Regina, a profession-

Light a light – stop the fight THREE local organisations will come together on Thursday 10 December to raise awareness and show support for victims of domestic violence. A partnership between Warwick Safe Haven, Zonta Club Warwick and the Peace Project will be formed and together they will lead the Light a Light walk with the community with lanterns and candles. The event follows a series of activities in the Southern Downs in recent months to raise awareness and put an end to domestic violence. Peace Project organiser Ruth Power said the event was about putting an end to violence in all relationships. “So many people feel that it is time more was done to deal with domestic violence and we

are very pleased to join with Zonta and Warwick Safe Haven in this show of support,” she said. “It is by no means an ‘antimen’ event - we are very aware that the vast majority of men are caring partners and fathers - but the reality is that there is increasing expressions of violence in our society and more understanding is needed as to why this is happening as well as how we can protect victims. Violence, in whatever form, should not be part of any relationship.” Safe Haven and Zonta have already been working together in recent months with Safe Haven showing a screening of the Rosie Batty film and Zonta hosting a breakfast at the Warwick RSL. Warwick Safe Haven president Bette Bonney said the

event would continue their work. “Safe Haven are continuing their important work in supporting victims of domestic violence,” she said. “Frontline guest speakers at Safe Haven’s recent Rosie Batty film night expressed their concern for appropriate ongoing care for those impacted, including an appropriate plan to ‘stay safe’.” The walk will be held on Thursday 10 December, with a plan to meet at Warwick Town Hall at 6.45pm. If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence call the Domestic Violence Action Centre on 4617 7670 or call 1300 RESPECT. The community should not hesitate to call triple-zero (000) anonymously if they are concerned about someone’s safety.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUTCHER

Paddock to plate covered By TANIA PHILLIPS AS PEOPLE become more and more health conscious, the role of a local butcher becomes more and more important. According to Paul Carey of Carey Brothers Butchers in Rose City Shopping, a local butcher allows you to know exactly where the meat you are consuming comes from - what it has been fed on and what has been done to it. “We have traceability,” he explained. “I can tell you where all our cattle, lamb and pigs came from. “We have the whole paddock to plate thing covered.” And with a family of his own, Paul says he lives by the motto that he wouldn’t sell anything in the shop that he wouldn’t serve at home. “We source and kill and age the cattle ourselves,” he said. “We are in control from go to woe.” And at this time of the year when pork and ham come into their own that a local butcher also comes into their own. In Carey Brothers’ case, they kill all their own pigs and cure them in good old-fashioned

woodsmoke (not liquid smoke like a lot of the big boys). He must be something right - Carey Brothers have been in business for 71 years and Paul himself is a third generation butcher. And being in business for that long, he has built up a rapport with the local farmers from whom he buys and with the customers he serves (many of who he takes pride in knowing on a first name basis - purely based on work). “You don’t get to be in business that long by cutting corners,” he said. “You have to supply good quality products consistently and offer good customer service.” The Australian Meat Industry Council represents Independent Local Butchers (ILBs) all over Australia and believe there are plenty of reasons to support local butchers. ILBs are owned and run by small business operators who strive to sell products their customers really appreciate. They are fresh meat specialists and have the product and skills to satisfy the needs of their customers. As independents, they are

not controlled by franchise operators, or head offices dictating what they must sell. They are local and part of a community, spending their time and money there and helping support other local small businesses. Many support local organisations cater for local issues. Most butchers also sponsor and support local school sports teams, charities and community events through meat tray donations, collection tins in their shops or through their own fund-raisers such as sausage sizzles. They are professional butchers who can give over-the-counter personal advice on the meat they sell and how to prepare and cook it. A butcher can explain the difference between different cuts of meat and cut them to order. If a customer wants it vacuum packed, they can do that too. Many offer a broad range of prepared meat products like gourmet sausages, burgers and pies and ready-to-cook meals such as roasts, marinated cuts, curries, meat loaf, kebabs, schnitzels, lasagne, stroganoff, Wellingtons and more. Most butchers now have to be good cooks as well. 1209907-EG49-15

SES demos for safety TENTERFIELD SES will open its doors to the community on Saturday 12 December. The Tenterfield Unit of the New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES) has invited all members of the local community to enjoy a day of demonstrations and information about what roles the local unit undertakes and how to prepare family and home for the current storm season by following some simple steps now. The day will begin at 9am and conclude at 3pm with a variety of

demonstrations including road crash rescue, vertical rescue, land search and floodboat demonstrations. The unit is also challenging the community to assist in building sandbag walls to see if they can make a lined container to be filled with water, unit controller Richard Dennison said. “Having celebrated our unit’s 35th birthday last year, the unit is currently undertaking a recruitment drive to find members that are interested in assisting their community in times of flood, storms and tsuna-

mis.” Mr Dennison said. “There is a requirement for both field operators and operations personnel; there is a job for almost everyone! You just need to be 16 or over and wanting to help. “With the SES a Registered Training Organisation our qualifications are nationally recognised, and employers hold these in high esteem,” Cliff Makings the unit’s training co-ordinator said. He urged members of the community to come to the open day, see

what they do, ask questions and enjoy a sausage sizzle. “See if you have what it takes to join our great team of volunteers and expand your horizons,” he said. “Programs are in local shop windows. Come for the day or come and see what interests you. Families welcome and help us build the walls and find the hidden treasure.” The Tenterfield unit is located at Lot 2, Cowper Street, between Thomas Rural and Bruce Lyons.

All hands on deck for clean-up RESIDENTS are advised that Southern Downs Regional Council will not be collecting green waste, such as trees and vegetation, or materials that come from private properties following storms over the weekend. Council will only be picking up street trees affected by the storms. Residents should take their green waste and other materials to Council’s Waste Transfer and Waste Management facilities. For further information, contact Council’s Engineering Services on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

Fire service calling for vigilance DESPITE recent storms bringing hail and strong winds to south-west Queensland communities, Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) is urging all residents to remain vigilant and reduce bushfire risk over coming months. RFSQ South Western Regional manager Lawrence Laing said recent rain would not reduce fire danger in the area, with heightened fire conditions forecast for Maranoa, Warrego and Darling Downs areas. “We’ve had a number of storms over the past weeks, but we are still seeing very high fire danger forecast in areas south-west of Queensland,” he said. “On hot, dry days a single spark could create a fast moving bushfire and be difficult to contain. “It’s up to everyone in the community to stay vigilant and do what we can to minimise risk this bushfire season.” Mr Laing said landowners wishing to conduct hazard reduction burns should contact their local fire warden beforehand and those who had conducted burns recently should ensure their fire had been properly extinguished. “Landowners who have conducted burns must make sure residual fires are contained so that they will not escape,” he said. Mr Laing said with fire activity continuing across the state, it was crucial for residents to prepare their homes and properties. “If they haven’t already, I urge residents to finalise their preparations and visit the RFSQ website to download a Bushfire Survival Plan, so that no-one is caught off guard,” he said. Further information on bushfire preparation can be found at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au. For the Daily Fire Danger Rating visit https:// ruralfire.qld.gov.au/FDR.asp

contractors with appropriate qualifications and licences. Home owners are urged to get at least three quotes for repair work and to conduct a free licence check on the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC)

HE’S one of Stanthorpe’s favourite sons and he’ll be bringing down the house at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre this weekend. Freshly returned from his second year at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAPA), Matthew Manahan. And following on from the success of his concert last year has agreed to perform again. The show, at 7.30pm at the Civic Centre this Saturday night, will showcase just what Matt has been up to at WAPA and what he has learned. Accompanied by Natlie McCosker, expect a little bit of everything including pieces from the two shows he performed in this year. It’s been a big year for the talented young performer and he is keen to show all his friends, family and supporters just what he’s been doing including being part of the WA premiere of Legally Blonde - a sell-out in the West. He’s also had a chance to work with the queen of Australian musicals Nancy Hays as well as working with meeting up and learning from Lisa McCune, Todd McKenney and the cast of Les Mis - but Matt will tell you all about it at his show. “It’s such a supportive community, I’m very lucky to have them - it’s a great place to growup,” he said of why he loves coming home and putting on these shows. Of course coming home for his mum’s roast is pretty good too. See Matt and hear about his adventures at

★★★★★★★★ ★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20 There is much inconsistency this week. Friends are cool one moment, cordial the next. Work comes easier earlier in the week but you struggle by the end. One caution, speak out rather than sulk or brood. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 You spend lots of time making order of chaos all week. Be alert to shifts in financial trends. Be much more generous about letting a companion share the limelight on the weekend. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 An observant Gemini will find outstanding opportunities hidden in the week’s varied events. Challenge your loved ones to reach his/her potential and challenge yourself to make new resolutions regarding health. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Whoops! you are accident prone and a little forgetful and possibly you dress inappropriately. Keep your sense of fun and you will remain the life of the party.

Revving up at the drags Casey’s tips

BRENDAN Edyvane from Moores Pocket, Queensland, upset the favourites to win in the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series presented by Southern Downs Regional Council at Warwick Dragway at the weekend. The volunteers at Warwick Dragway produced a flawless show while the racers turned on the action in front of a good growd, including the Southern Downs Deputy Mayor, to bring a successful close to the first ever National Championship event to be held in Warwick. Photographer TERRY WEST was on hand to capture the action and those who gathered to enjoy the event.

Councillor Ross Bartley With winner of the Junior Dragster Dylan Leo.

LEO—July 23-August 22 Handle with care - that’s the warning so far as your love life is concerned. You begin to feel more in touch with older family members. Travel detours could make for an amusing and profitable weekend.

Bike riders, Wally Hosta and John Baird at the Warwick Drags.

VIRGO—August 23-September 22 Give someone a second chance to prove to himself/herself. You can be a little hard on the world right now. News from faraway arrives by Thursday, but take some time for the impact to sink in. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 The creative Libran can be a little too creative this week. Discipline is the keyword, especially in your work environment. Financially this week you could win some and lose some, but you should come out a winner. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Don’t volunteer for everyone else’s job - you can be too helpful for your own good. Your own work may suffer. Your philosophical attitude may turn off an admirer. A key objective is within reach by Friday. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Don’t be thrifty when paying compliments and don’t be shy in romance. A travel opportunity may open up by the end of the week, perhaps related to work or education. Financial benefits arrive in quick succession. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 If hinting for a project or promotion, be a shade less subtle. Don’t sacrifice quality if making a major purchase. You get a lot more advice than you give - some of it wiser than you would believe. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 Is no news good news? Not necessarily and the key this week is to make no assumptions. Go after unanswered messages and issue reminders. Weekend entertainment may be much more amusing than anticipated. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Your patience may be taxed on Thursday and Friday with people refusing to take your word. The weekend is for partying but don’t exhaust yourself in the process. A new admirer may enter the work environment this week. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK Enthusiasm is a marvellous trait and it doesn’t take much to fire up your imagination - or your temper. If you had the choice, you would rather take the lead than pull the strings behind the scenes. You do have a choice

Cleaning up our streets A LOCAL street sweeper has hit back at recent claims that there is no need for sweeping works to be done in some parts of the region. Southern Downs Regional Council’s Street Sweeper Operator, Warren Austin said street sweeping was a vital operation that many residents take for granted or do not understand the importance of. According to council some of their street sweeping activities have recently come under fire from a couple of Southern Downs residents, who suggested it was simply a waste of ratepayers’ money. However, Mr Austin begs to differ. In response to

these complaints Mr Austin said street sweeping is of paramount importance. “Most residents would be completely unaware that, just in our northern part of the Southern Downs region, Council’s street sweeper collects, on average, 21 tonnes of dirt, debris and other material each week,” he said. “There is a lot of fine dust that people don’t see that is swept up by the sweeper, and for those people that complain that the streets are clean so why waste money on street sweeping, I would remind them that the streets are clean because we do regular street sweeping,” he said.

In the 2014/15 financial year, Council’s street sweepers collected an incredible 1546.52 tonnes of debris from across the whole Southern Region. Of that amount, 840.96 tonnes was collected in the northern part of the region, with the balance 705.56 tonnes collected by Council’s Street Sweeper Operator, Mark Rouen, in the southern part of the region. “Just imagine what our streets would look like if they were left unattended,” Mr Austin said. “The dust, dirt, screenings, cigarette butts, papers, bottles and general detritus would build up and become unsightly.

Street sweeper Warren Austin. “Not only that, but water would be unable to reach the storm water drains because they would be clogged with debris. “My role involves sweeping the main streets of Warwick, Allora, Killarney, Leyburn and Pratten; doing fortnightly sweeps of the

entire Warwick CBD; and monthly sweeps of national highways,” he said. In addition to the scheduled sweeping routes, council also receives a lot of requests from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads to do cleanup sweeping.

Local Sport Casey’s tips

Connecting people with the sport they love.

Testing time for tests The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

THE first of the Day Night Tests is done and dusted, and I think for the most part an unqualified success although the jury remains undecided on whether or not a day night test will deliver a four or five-day event. There did not seem to be any great concerns regarding the performance of the “pink ball” which seemed to stand up to the wear and tear and looked as though it may have swung the pendulum back in the favour of the bowlers. The Kiwis left empty handed, but have won plenty of support for their sportsmanship in this series. Where there is a will there is a way, and my companions and I in Fiji were able to catch a little of the Adelaide test albeit with a little trouble. The summer of cricket now shifts focus with the arrival of the Windies. Question marks hang over the depth in the Windies Test squad, but I am sure we will be in for another colourful series. Fiji has proved challenging and rewarding for our group, and with our work at the Naiyala High School completed we are on the move but will not be back home until Saturday evening. Plenty to share then. Again Bula from the Fiji connection. - Casey STORMS THREATEN BUT ACTION ON THE PITCH CURATOR of the Stanthorpe turf wickets, Mark Lanza take a bow - Bluey managed to turn out two great wickets for the Davis and Mitchell Shield games after some seriously trying weather conditions looked likely to derail Rep Cricket between Stanthorpe and Warwick last weekend. There was thunder and lightning in the distance. There had been rain and hail but the real action was on the wickets at the CF White and Sheahan Ovals last Sunday. It all came down to the last ball of the last over in a thrilling Davis Shield game on Sheahan Oval. Warwick won the toss and sent their opponents in, hoping to get an early advantage from the wicket. Stanthorpe set the visitors a reasonable target of 235 at the end of their 50 overs. Stanthorpe captain Todd Brady showed his experience, scoring a well-orchestrated 58. Stanthorpe opener Mitchell Drayton played a great innings to top score with 63. The game destined for a close finish as the Warwick batsmen edged their way towards the target. Kev Poole led the way with a half century and found support from Will Dearden (49) and his captain Kris McLennan who scored 30 runs. As the overs ticked by and wickets fell, Warwick needed a little more than a run a ball in the last few overs. In a nail biting finish, the visitors needed six from the last over. Keiran Bourke was out off the first ball of the over and it was left to Bourke’s clubmates Josh Ryan and Thomas Bourke to get the job done. It all came down to the last ball - two runs required for a Warwick victory; a wicket for a Stanthorpe win. Anthony Marino, who had the task of bowling the final over, held a spectacular caught and bowled opportunity to dismiss Josh Ryan and deliver a Stanthorpe victory. The Stanthorpe side had made things difficult for themselves by grassing no less than four catches off the Marino’s bowling during the innings. Stanthorpe now has one win from two games and need a win over Downlands in their next Davis Shield game in January. The Mitchell Shield game on the CF White Oval did not have the same dramatic finish as the Davis Shield game but netted Stanthorpe another win. Warwick had first use of the wicket and posted

Pictured left, an adult Tilapia and a juvenile on the right. Notice the dorsal fin on these, it is continuous along the top of the fish. Dorsal fin in native fish are in two sections, so it is very easy to distinguish them.

Enjoying the shoot leg of the annual Tetrathalon.

The members of the Texas Pony Club were closely supervised by members of the Inglewood SSAA as they enjoyed the shoot leg of their annual Tetrathalon.

Fish scientist Greg Ringwood, left, with Roger Martin, president of Warwick fish stocking club and Brian and Chris Kuhn, fish care volunteers at the recent public information session hosted by the Warwick Fish Stocking club.

The Stanthorpe team of Les Williams, Pat Schnoor and. Andrea Denkkewitz placed third in the recent inaugural Gateball Tournament in Stanthorpe.

a very gettable total of 154. In reply, Stanthorpe lost some quick wickets on their way to victory. Early in their innings, Stanthorpe slumped to 3/28 before a 61-run partnership between Jamie Carnell (46) and Ross Lupton (22) steadied the ship. Sam Dowie added valuable unbeaten 27 to wrap up the win for Stanthorpe. The Stanthorpe bowlers all performed well in the conditions. Youngster Jordan Lanza took 3/16; Danny Folkers 2/24; Duane Lihou 2/25 and Andrew Einam 2/28. Stanthorpe have now won two from two in the Mitchell Shield and looking towards a grand-final appearance. The two Stanthorpe sides also collected the annual Hendry Bourke trophies. EXPERIENCE GAINED ON SHOW THE experience gained from hosting the club’s first gateball tournament was evident last Friday as players enjoyed a more relaxed morning gateball after the hustle and bustle of the previous week. Ten players took to the green, with all players showing substantial improvement in their game. Two team games were played both were close. There were also two games of doubles and two triples games played using both courts. Val Fancourt and Bill Golding played Andrea Denkewitz and Margaret Dickenson and were successful in both games. Grace Howard and Pat Schnoor were the captains of the triples games; once again both games were very close. Gateballers will be celebrating their Christmas luncheon on Friday and will only play until morning tea. KEEPING WATERWAYS SAFE THE recent presentation on tilapia awareness and native fish hosted by the Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association Inc. drew an interested crowd of anglers. Fish scientist Greg Ringwood spoke to the group of the risks pest fish pose to the Condamine Catchment and the

increasing threat tilapia pose to the Murray-Darling Basin. The threats posed are significant and include the threat to water quality with the potential to impact drinking, stock and domestic and irrigation water. It is a threat to the biodiversity of the aquatic environment and, of course, a very real threat to recreational fishing and tourism. It was pointed out that Tilapia can be found close to the catchment boundaries, and it is therefore extremely important people do not move tilapia around alive or dead as they keep their eggs and babies alive in their mouth. Anglers who catch a non-native fish should kill it and dispose of it away from the river, preferably in a rubbish bin and always report unusual fish captures or sightings to Fisheries Queensland. Restoring native fish populations was also on the agenda for discussion. A healthy native fish population will help prevent pest fish becoming established in the Condamine Catchment. Healthy riparian vegetation including grass is key to healthy native fish populations in the Warwick region. Native fish and recreational fishing provide important social, cultural and economic values to the local Warwick community. Keeping our waterways healthy is vital to the future of fishing in our area now and in to the future. WIN FOR McPHERSON SPORTERS were back in action on the Stanthorpe course on Sunday. Jim McPherson was this week’s winner, edging out runner-up Mark Lynam. McPherson also had the Best Gross figures on the day. The run-downs went to John Walsh and Marg Locke. Norm Steele claimed the Pin Shot on the third while the Pro Pin went to No Won Kim. Angelo Maugeri and Owen McPaul were the luck meat tray winners.

A reminder to all Sporters with Santa just around the corner the Sporters Golf Christmas Party will be held on Sunday 13 December. The morning will get underway with a sausage sizzle brekky followed by a game of golf and a barbecue lunch with many drinks. Good idea to let the boys know numbers for catering purposes. Tee of this Sunday is as usual - between 8am and 8.30am. Remember visitors are always welcome. T20 CLUB ACTION IT WAS all Twenty/20 action in Stanthorpe on Saturday. Under threatening skies, Souths posted another dominant win over Tenterfield - their second in a week. Jordan Lanza set a scorching pace, smashing a quick fire 80 runs as Souths set the visitors a target of 157. Things began badly for Tenterfield with the loss of two quick wickets. Souths bowlers and fielders managed to contain the Tenterfield batsmen to a score of 110, well shy of the required total. It was an improved performance from the visitors who lost only four wickets. Jordan Lanza capped off a good game, taking two catches in addition to his fine batting performance. In the second Twenty/20 game, Wanderers and RSL again went head to head for the second time in a week. RSL again proved too strong for Wanderers. RSL won the toss and relished the opportunity to bat first. Luke Brady showed plenty of class in the innings. He remained not out 60 as RSL posted a total of 172. Chasing a little better than eight and a half an over, Wanderers were immediately behind the eight mark with the loss of early wickets. Wanderers after bowling well were dismissed for only 77 runs giving RSL a big 95-run win. Luke Brady Dave Becker and Dylan Lihou claimed two wickets apiece in a fine bowling performance for RSL. PONY CLUB TETRAHALON HITS RANGE MEMBERS of the Texas Pony Club kicked up their heels at their rifle shoot at the SSAA (Inglewood) range on Sunday. The shoot was one leg of their annual Tetrathalon which includes swimming, running riding and shooting. Natasha Paganin showed plenty of skill to take out the event. In second placing were Jessica White and Tom Paterson with a score of 850. Nicholas Shannon scored 700 to finish in third place. Members of the Inglewood SSAA enjoyed supervising the group and look forward to hosting this great group again next year. Members of the Texas Pony Club meanwhile are keen to challenge to other local pony clubs in the region. There was also something for members and after the lunch break an Action Pistol competition was held 18 included a magazine change. The winner of this event in 20.56 seconds was Peter Jones. In second spot was Tom Donald (22.78) and Iain Bowen (23.79) filled the other minor placing. Of course out, Spin spies tell us that there was a very real chance that Doug Adams of Goondiwindi would have made a placing had he brought the key to his gun box. (Boom Boom) 'TIS THE SEASON 'TIS the season to be silly or be bowling at the Summit Bowls Club. One thing for sure there are plenty of summer days to lap up the atmosphere. This weekend the club has their own festive celebrations with Christmas party including bowls this Friday. Organisers and some frazzled caterers would appreciate confirmation of your attendance. On Sunday it will be all hands on deck as the club welcomes Lions Club joining them for barefoot bowls from 10.30 am, and will then catering a barbecue for the visitors - once again confirm numbers to the club.

Local Sport It is certainly a busy time for the club on Saturday (5 December) there will be social bowls from 1pm and in the evening the Tractor Club is holding their Christmas party. Sunday the Lions Bowls Club Christmas party. Looking a little further ahead to (aagh) January 2016 - the SDMDBA Men’s Open Fours are scheduled for 30 and 31 January. BUSY WEEKEND OF GOLF IT WAS another busy weekend on the fairways and greens at Wallangarra last weekend. On Saturday Gary Sutclifffe got the chocolates in the stroke event. He finished just ahead of Scott Williams and Mick Ellis. Sutcliffe also nabbed the pin shot on nine and the birdies nest. Williams collected the pin on three and the best approach to wrap up a good day. On Sunday the club hosted the Open 4BBB Challenge. Overall nett winners were A. Thompson and T. Murphy. Nett runners-up - B. McMillan and Scott Williams. The Gross winners - Stephen Hampstead and Gary Sutcliffe. Also among the prizes were M. Hurtz, Peter Butler, Alan Lutter and M. Cusack. It was a great day and the club looks forward to hosting the event next year. This Saturday is the Monthly Medal and the Medal of Medals, so if you have been successful in winning a monthly medal this year, be sure you are at the ‘Garra on Saturday. NRL 2016 THE much-anticipated NRL draw for the 2016 season has finally been released, and as with all draws there will be winners and losers. The season kicks off in early March and for those of us on the Southern Downs, it could well be a choice between Apple and Grape Harvest Festival frivolities or first round of NRL. The Broncos season gets underway on Thursday 3 March when they play the Eels at Pirtek Stadium. For those Broncos fans sweating on the first home game, they will have to wait until the following week when Brisbane host the Warriors at Suncorp - the first of their Friday night games in the new season. Fans will have to wait until round four for the much-anticipated replay of the 2015 grand final when the Cowboys and Broncos go head to head on Friday 25 March - The game has been scheduled for Good Friday and is sure to be a blockbuster at Suncorp. Under the new broadcast arrangements, there will be Thursday night games played in 18 of the 26 rounds and the jury remains out on that change. Players have expressed their displeasure at being overlooked in the draw discussions and it will be interesting to see if they plan to take action. For league followers, here are some dates that might make it into those brand new 2016 diaries. For the early birds, the 2016 All Stars game is back at Suncorp on 13 February. March 3 - Round One commences March 17 - Play NRL Round April 22 - Anzac Round May 6 - Rep Round

The full schedule can be found at www.nrl. com. NEW BRL EXECUTIVE UPBEAT THE newly elected BRL executive is upbeat about the coming season following the Border Rugby league AGM. Former Stanthorpe Gremlins president Norm Crisp was elected unopposed to the vacant position of chairman of the BRL. Crisp will be joined on the executive by vice-president John Hendry who returns to the rugby league scene after a hiatus of several years. Treasurer Kerry Shatte also returns to the game’s administration. The newly elected BRL secretary Amanda Harrold is also from Stanthorpe. At the AGM, all four current clubs expressed their confidence at fielding teams in A grade and Ladies League Tag in the coming season. There will be discussions with interested parties in Texas and Inglewood to canvass their return to the competition while Millmerran will be once again approached to join the BRL. EDYVANE UPSETS APPLECART IN A weekend of racing upsets, Brendan Edyvane (Moores Pocket, QLD) has upset the Top Sportsman applecart in the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series at the Warwick Dragway.

The volunteers at Warwick Dragway produced a flawless show while the racers turned on the action bringing a successful close to the first National Championship event held in Warwick. Stepping up from Speedflow Super Sedan to Hungry Jacks Top Sportsman, Brendan Edyvane defeated strong favourite Scott Porter in the final. Edyvane defeated Neil Maxwell in Round One before sending Jason Stares home in the semi final. The underdog then recorded a 5.747 elapsed time on the 5.71 dial in to defeat Porter and claim the Silver Christmas Tree. “It’s a bit of a surprise,” Edyvane said. “We stepped up to Top Sportsman for the weekend and it all worked out well in the end. “I looked over and saw Porter coming so, I was just hoping we’d go pretty close to the dial in and we weren’t far off. “I cut a good light and he red lit, so he virtually gave it to me on the start line.” Christine Steffens (Gatton, QLD) wrapped up a perfect weekend with an Ice Slushie Supercharged Outlaws victory over Brian Trott in the final. Steffens defeated Tim Caswell in Round One to earn a solo pass in the semi final, but was made to work for her win the final showdown. Steffens left the start line first, leaving Trott to chase but he couldn’t reel her in with a 4.776 on a 4.75 dial in to Steffens’ 4.612 on a 4.57 dial in. “We had a pretty lucky weekend,” Steffens said. “This bracket is hard work. It’s a tough bracket and all the racers are hard to beat. “Having to do dial ins and the heat has just about got us, but the old girl came out in the end - and I’m talking about the car. “I have to thank my husband Ricky, without him I wouldn’t be racing. My daughter Kaylee

usually helps us out but she disappeared this weekend so I have a couple of ring ins. Travis Liefting (Old Bar, NSW) spoiled the party for top qualifier Katie Cunningham in K and R Plumbing Modified winning the final with a perfect reaction time at the start line to record a 5.737 second time on a 5.71 dial in. Cunningham was always under pressure, given Liefting’s perfect .000 light and could not make up the difference with a hard fought 4.876 on a 4.86 dial in. Liefting earlier defeated Lucas Holz, and Paul Doeblien to reach the final and as the first and only competitor to record a .000 reaction time during eliminations, he was awarded the Summit Racing Equipment Perfect Light Award. Kevin Langridge (Capalaba, QLD) found himself on the winner’s podium in Speedflow Super Sedan, defeating Peter Whitbourne in the final with a 6.250 on a 6.21 dial in from a 6.740 and a 6.65 dial in. Langridge had to overcome Ashley Thomson, Mandy Pukis and Mitchell Bauer to reach the final and claim the trophy. Denweld Modified Bike went to Tammy Goldthorp (Raceview, QLD) who defeated a red lighting Phil Halpin in the final with a 5.969 on a 5.89 dial in from Halpin who fouled by just .011 seconds. To reach the final, Goldthorp eliminated Luke Spence, Matt Halpin and Peter Strudwick. Also in Modified Bike, top qualifier Daniel Sekli claimed a new eighth-mile National speed record for the B/MB class reaching 125.10 mph for the first ever National Record to be set at Warwick Dragway. Rob Winterburn (Daisy Hill, QLD) showed his consistency to back up the Winternationals win earlier this year and a runner-up at the recent East Coast Nationals in Sydney to add another ANDRA Christmas Tree to his collection. Winterburn defeated Rob Price in the Image Ink Super Street final with a 7.471 on a 7.42 dial in to a 7.434 and a 7.43 dial in. Earlier in the day Mark Peterson, Andrew Stathis and David Freeman were sent packing on the way to the final. Dylan Leo (Jimbommba, QLD) wrapped up a successful weekend in Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster, taking home the trophy and winning the Gridstar by YBI Creative Best Presented Team Award. Leo defeated Jordan Spencer and Andrew Tinney on his way to a final win against Charlee Wilson with an 8.148 second pass on an 8.12 dial in from Wilson’s 8.912 on an 8.94 dial in. Along with the Silver Christmas Tree the team also take home the Best Presented Trophy, six Best Presented Caps and a $50 Summit Racing Equipment voucher. Finally in FG Loy and Sons Earthmoving Super Gas, Dale O’Dwyer (Toowoomba, QLD) eliminated current Super Gas champ Graeme Spencer followed by Darryl Stephen on the way to defeating Kerry Boyde with a 6.308 second pass to Boyde’s 6.378. The event came to a close just as the weather turned and ANDRA would like to thank Warwick Dragway and all of the hard working volunteers for their effort this weekend. The Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series now travels to Mildura in Victoria next weekend 4-5 December.
