SEASON’S GREETINGS

Charities pool By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

Volunteer Brittany Cunningham with Margaret Ladner gather gifts for Christmas cheer. 147583 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Ms Ladner sees others who are living in their cars. “Sometimes you see a big man come in nearly crying. He may have lost his job six months ago, hasn’t been able to find work, and now the mortgage is catching up with him.” DCAB manager Jinny McGrath said between the three charities about 470 families received toys, food vouchers or hampers last Christmas. Another 500 hampers were distributed on top of that, she said. “Each household we assisted received a toy for each child under 12, and either a food hamper or food voucher and single adults also received a present.” Ms McGrath said that under the combined charities’ Christmas Cheer program it was hop-

ing to provide extra help to lowincome people this Christmas. The aim was to provide parents a selection of gifts for their children, and to provide a gift for single and alone people on low incomes. The charities need cash, non-perishable food, toys suitable for children aged seven to 17, bath towels and $25 Kmart, Big W and Target vouchers to spread their Christmas cheer. A volunteer manual ute driver for half-a-day per week is also required at Dandenong Benevolent Society. To donate, write a cheque to DCAB, posted to 186 Foster Street East, Dandenong 3175, or visit https://www.givenow. com.au/dandenongcabchristmascheer.

1210048-JV50-15

CHARITIES haven’t given up the needy this Christmas just because the Federal Government gave up on them. Dandenong Community Advisory Bureau, Salvation Army Doveton and Dandenong Benevolent Society are overcoming their own budget black holes by pooling together to help large numbers in financial hardship. Dandenong Benevolent Society’s $70,000 of federal emergency relief funding was cut this year, of which $20,000 was used to give families a toy and food for Christmas. President Margaret Ladner said community generosity had magnificently helped to fill the breach. She cites the example of an anonymous man who left $150 at the store for the past 10 festive seasons; many others float by with a generous donation. “Just let people know that it’s them that’s keeping us going,” Ms Ladner said. She says she’s regularly seeing young mums and kids fleeing domestic violence, looking for a place to stay. One such broken family, whose income was swallowed by their rent, was given money for pharmaceutical prescriptions and babies milk, as well as a supermarket voucher.

■ India precinct funds fall a little short of expectation.....

Cash complaint By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS DANDENONG’S Little India has been shortchanged despite winning the race to become Victoria’s first Indian cultural precinct, says an Indian community leader. Federation of Indian Associations Victoria president Vasan Srinivasan said the pledged $500,000 of state funding was well short of the $2.5 million which Chinatown, the Lonsdale Street Greek precinct and Lygon Street’s Italian precinct each received. “What can you do with $500,000?” Museum India, which was launched in Foster Street last year, will shut its doors without healthy support from the State Government, Mr Srinivasan said. It is seeking a base in the nearby

historic Masonic Hall in Mason Street to house its vast, ancient collection of art, coins and stamps. “We haven’t got a cent from the (state) government yet,” Mr Srinivasan said. “But it’s easy for the minister to say we’ve got a precinct.” He said the co-announced $500,000 for an Indian community centre in City of Wyndham was also short of the required $9 million. “You can’t buy a three bedroom house in Wyndham for $500,0000.” The 12-month selection process had divided Indians in different regions of Melbourne, pitting City of Wyndham, Melbourne CBD and Dandenong against one another, Mr Srinivasan said.

“The same government branded the area Little India in 2010. So why are we coming back and playing this game? “It’s the same stuff in a different bag. “After spending time and effort over a year and dividing the community in three directions ... I say do not use my community as your political football.” At the precinct announcement on 2 December, Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott told Star News there would be further funding “in line with other precincts”. “It will get more than $500,000,” Mr Scott said. “We will seek contributions from traders and will be working through with the (Greater Dandenong) council

for a contribution from them.” He said Little India won the right because it was deemed “ready to go” and the region was home to vast Indian and south Asian communities, he said. It would be the equivalent of Chinatown and Lygon Street as a cultural destination. “This precinct will become a hub of activity - hosting festivals, a drawcard for tourism, supporting small businesses and boosting the local economy in Dandenong,” he said. Currently, the precinct holds an annual street festival, cultural tours, 36 businesses and Museum India. What is to come will depend on stakeholders such as Greater Dandenong Council and Foster Street Traders Association, Mr Scott said.

Some of the council and community’s ideas include a Bollywood film festival, Diwali, Eid and Chand new moon celebrations, a further marketing push and building works. Little India trader Dinesh Chauhan said the precinct announcement gave him and other traders a “lifeline” after the upheaval of road closures and disruptions during Revitalising Central Dandenong’s initial phase. “We weren’t sure if we’d stay or the government would kick us. With this, we can be sure. “We will retain our livelihoods. “It consolidates Dandenong as a multicultural city. It’s a big achievement for the Indian community.”

Science is in her DNA PLAINLY, Noble Park’s Dr Donna Whelan’s passion for DNA science is for love, not money. Yes, there are great high points to the 28-year-old’s career. She has just won a prestigious award from the Australian Synchrotron and is pouring herself into exhilarating, post-doctoral studies and a stirring cultural life in New York. There is little time for sleep in the ‘city that never sleeps’. But on the other side, she’s forced to eke a living on a $22,000 a year scholarship. When she’s back at home, she moves back in with her parents. “After 10 years of education I am still making less money than when I managed a Subway sandwich shop.” There is certainly no renaissance in science funding, which is on the downward slide, she said. “I had to live, for a while, with a PM who did not believe in climate change. It was terrifying. “That’s the scary part about being a scientist, being able to test and demonstrate and prove something. “And to have people as powerful as a prime minister say you’re wrong.” But there are deeper pay-offs. She hopes to “start hacking away at the medical questions that assail modern civilisation”. In New York’s Langone Medical Centre, Dr Whelan is studying something of “utmost importance” - how DNA repairs itself after a double strand break.

These lesions happen naturally as well as due to toxic drugs and radiation poisoning. Her studies could be the key to understanding the origins of several cancers, immunodeficiency and other genetic mutation diseases. On 7 December, Dr Whelan won the synchrotron’s annual Stephen Thesis Medal for her PhD research into microscope techniques for the imaging of cells. She remembers spending 72-hour stints at the synchrotron to collect a data set. But in the end she was able to discover a way to enhance infra-red imaging of cells - which is used to diagnose cancers, viral infections and malnutrition. Dr Whelan also discovered the fallibility of a Nobel-Prize-winning ‘super-resolution’ technique of examining cells. She found factors that affect the very conclusions drawn from superresolution research. It’s something scientists never want to hear, Dr Whelan said. The research was conceived out of the frustration of being unable to see inside a cell using infrared light. Her dream is to start visualising the shape of individual DNA double helices inside a cell. She wants to see them react to stressors such as heat, dehydration, chemotherapeutic drugs and starvations. “So far we don’t have the science to look at that.

Dr Donna Whelan hopes to unlock further DNA mysteries. 147989 “That’s what I am trying to develop.” Her love of science was fostered by parents but she didn’t enjoy conventionally-taught science. She remembers sitting bored in her St John’s Regional College science

class being told the names of planets while hoping to learn about black holes and quasars. What Dr Whelan loves is other scientists who put ethics and science before their own gains.

YOUNG readers can win prizes for losing themselves in a book this summer. City of Greater Dandenong’s Summer Reading Club has a Lost Worlds theme and runs from 1 December to 20 January. Parents or carers of pre-schoolers need to log five books to be in the running for a children’s tablet. Primary school students need to read 10 books for the chance to win an iPad mini or a visit from children’s author Adam Wallace. They’ll receive stickers, bookmarks, tattoos and key rings along the way as encouragement. Teens who read five books will be eligible to win an iPad mini. They can also check out Bookface to compete in other competitions, including creating a photo using the cover of their favourite book. The Summer Reading Club prize presentation will take place on Sunday 24 January at 2pm at Springvale Library. Visit the Springvale or Dandenong libraries or www.greaterdandenong.com/src to register.

Green wedge politics By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS RETIREES are set to fight against Greater Dandenong Council’s proposal to rezone their green-wedge retirement village in Bangholme for industrial use. A quarter of Willow Lodge’s 600 residents, mainly pensioners, met on 3 December out of concern for their future under the proposal. The leafy retirement village is within a 337-hectare land parcel bordered by Harwood and Frankston-Dandenong roads, EastLink and flood-prone Eumemmering Creek, which the council will submit to state government for rezoning. Willow Lodge Residents Association president David Duckworth said residents just wanted a quiet life and were daunted by the prospect of moving out. “One of my concerns was to stop people from panicking. A lot of elderly people here they don’t have much other than the homes they’re living in. “And the prospect of their home being sold under them is a real concern for them.” During the meeting, residents cheered “with gusto” when told by the village’s management that their homes would be

Cr Matt Kirwan with secretary of the residents' committee member Carmel Perkins and presdient David Duckworth. safe. But Mr Duckworth said residents faced higher site fees to reflect higher industrial-zone rates. “Most of us are pensioners, already

paying a large slice of their income to stay here.” Matthew Kirwan, the only dissenting Greater Dandenong councillor, said there

IN BRIEF

was a possibility that the village would be sold off or bordered by industrial development if the rezoning went ahead. He has submitted a rescission motion against the plan for the council’s meeting on 14 December. In his motion, he stated that the council’s move was done without community consultation and was “arguably futile” given both major political parties supported a fixed green-wedge boundary. He noted the council’s previous failed attempt had been opposed by Frankston council, Melbourne Water and Willow Lodge residents. “We shouldn’t be requesting changes to the urban growth boundary without consulting with the community.” Cr Jim Memeti, who moved the proposal, said the proposal had been the council’s position since 2003. He said the residents’ amenity would be protected if a buffer zone from nearby factories and warehouses was retained. “At the moment, they’ve got a buffer zone from the egg farm on one side, an industrial zone across the road and industrial at the back. “They’ve always known it’s an industrial zone.”

Date set to remove deadly Abbotts Road crossing By CASEY NEILL THE deadly Abbotts Road level crossing will be gone by 2019, the State Government has announced. Committee for Dandenong chairman Gary Castricum welcomed the news on Sunday 29 November, which followed years of campaigning from the group. “We’ve managed to take it from where it didn’t appear on any list to actually getting a target date for it,” he said.

tersection five years earlier. The City of Greater Dandenong has started work on a $5.5 million duplication of Abbotts Road, due to be completed in May next year. Mr Castricum said the Committee for Dandenong would continue to advocate for an overpass linking the two sides of Remington Drive. “It really forms a part of the puzzle,” he said. “We’re getting a good reception. The

More than 23,000 vehicles use the intersection every day. “It would be nice if it was next year - there’s a lot of people who spend a lot of time sitting there, waiting there,” Mr Castricum said. “It can’t be quick enough.” A train derailed at the level crossing in 2012 following a collision with a truck, killing one man and injuring dozens more people. This followed another death at the in-

council is keen for it as well. “We’ll keep working to try and bring that about. “We’re hopeful we’ll see some type of commitment to fund that.” Planning is underway to remove the level crossings at Corrigan, Heatherton and Chandler roads in Noble Park. The South Gippsland Highway crossing is on the list of 50 to be removed by 2022.

Trees torched A VANDAL has set fire to two nature strip trees in Dandenong. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Marisa Owens said firefighters extinguished the blazes in Garside and Ross streets about 6.30pm on Tuesday 24 November. She said the vandal had also tried to set another tree alight on Ross Street.

Robbery charge A SPRINGVALE South man was menaced with his own knife during a robbery in Springvale. The 23-year-old victim was walking along Springvale Road about 10.30pm on Sunday 29 November when police allege a man approached him and asked for cigarettes and money. He refused and the man allegedly punched him to the side of the head, searched his pockets and found a pocket knife. The victim fled and called triple-zero. Police attended and arrested a 19-year-old Mulgrave man nearby.

Help spread a little Christmas cheer CHRISTMAS and the January period can be a difficult time for people, especially if they are on a low income and if they have children. A recent survey of clients accessing support services at The Salvation Army found that, after accommodation costs, the majority lived on less than $20 per day. For individuals living on Newstart this was closer to $9 per day. This leaves little available for everyday expenses let alone special occasions like Christmas or meeting back-to-school costs of uniform and books. With emergency relief agencies in the City of Greater Dandenong losing over $250,000 per year in funding from the Federal Government, we are all really struggling to assist people this Christmas. Therefore the Dandenong Commu-

JINNY MCGRATH DANDENONG COMMUNITY ADVISORY BUREAU MANAGER

nity Advisory Bureau, the Dandenong Benevolent Society and the Doveton Salvation Army have joined together to organise a Christmas Cheer Appeal. The community advice bureau is co-ordinating the donations. We are appealing to businesses and the general community to help make Christmas a special time for those experiencing financial hardship in our area. With assistance we hope to improve well-being for people on low incomes who live in the target area by enabling them to access extra assistance at Christmas time; provide parents with

choice in selection of presents for their children and thus maintain dignity and reduce financial hardship; and bring good cheer to single and alone people on low incomes by providing a gift at Christmas time. Donations will be used to assist families in need. A $25 gift card for Kmart, Target or Big W will buy a present for a child. A $25 donation will help a household buy some special Christmas foods. A $15 donation will buy a present for a person who is alone at Christmas. Donations can be made by sending a cheque to Dandenong CAB, 186 Foster Street East, Dandenong 3175, donating online at https://www.givenow.com.au/dandenongcabchristmascheer or calling 9791 8344 to discuss further.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 9 December 1915 A Fighting Family THREE sons of Mr Lindsay late of Cardinia Creek have gone to war. Sergeant David Lindsay took part in the first landing at Gallipoli, was wounded and invalided back to Victoria. Private Albert Lindsay, after serving four months in the trenches at Gallipoli, was seriously wounded by a huge explosive shell, he was sent to hospital at Malta. When nearly recovered from his wounds, he had an attack of enteric fever and was then sent to England. The third son, Frank, went to England, volunteered for and was accepted for the Royal Navy, where he is now serving. The fourth son, Sergeant Harold Lindsay of the Senior Cadets, is keenly looking forward to the time when he will be old enough to do his little bit in helping to bring the Kaiser to heel.

50 years ago 5 December 1965 Only the rain was driving Dandenong - It was a cold morning with driving rain. The Weather Bureau said “A cold southerly wind with gusts to 40MPH”. He had slept in - bed was hard to leave on such a morning. He was late for work. A rushed breakfast - and a quick dash to his car parked in front of the house. The engine started despite the cold. The windscreen wipers worked. Everything was fine, the gears slipped in easily. He could make up some time on the highway; traffic wouldn’t be so heavy at this time. A final wave to his wife, and he let the clutch out, something was wrong. The car didn’t move. He went through the process again. Tried second gear. The engine raced but the car stayed where it was. This called for investigation.

He got out of the car and saw - no wheels. The car rested sedately on four piles of bricks, someone had removed all four wheels during the night. 20 years ago 4 December 1995 Cheery band does the rounds The Dandenong Salvation Army band is striking up a cheery note and will be playing at homes for the elderly, schools, carol services and on “roving commissions” until Christmas Eve. The band starts its busy schedule by playing at the Sothern Cross Nursing Home and at Willow Lodge on December 15. The band will be at Dandenong Carols by Candlelight and Bellview Nursing Home in the early morning. On Christmas Eve it will play for the senior citizens at Berwick House.

5 years ago 29 November 2010 Woman run over by own car A Noble Park North woman was run over twice by her own car last Thursday morning when she failed to put on the hand brake. The 38-year-old thought she had put the hand brake on as she got out of her car but it rolled backwards, knocking her over. Paramedic Graig Brooks said the car ran over the woman’s lower stomach and legs before crossing the street, hitting a fence, bouncing back, and running over again. He said the woman couldn’t move after being hit the first time. She was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Banker principal retires By CASEY NEILL CHANDLER Park Primary School principal Peter Paul has retired after half a century in education. Earlier this year Mr Paul was implicated in corruption claims at the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission hearing. Mr Paul denied any wrongdoing. The school has confirmed it will start the process of selecting his replacement early next year. Meanwhile, the State Government has confirmed it will sell

the former Maralinga Primary School site after it was vacated earlier this year. The announcement prompted media reports that Chandler Park School was slated for closure. Chandler Park and Maralinga merged six years ago but had continued to operate from separate campuses, waiting for funding to upgrade Chandler Park to accommodate all students. Mr Paul made the decision to close Maralinga before the 2015 school year and bring all classes to Chandler Park in the hope that the State Government would sell the Maralinga site and the pro-

to hold Education Department funds to distribute to neighbouring schools as needed. But it was alleged that Education Department public servants misused the funds to pay for their own perks such as travel, furniture and wine. Between 2007 and 2014, Chandler Park was invoiced for more than $150,000 for purchases from companies linked to now-sacked Education Department school resources director Nino Napoli. In that period, the school had bought nearly $30,000 of Italian wine from Mr Paul’s wine-merchant son Matthew Paul alleg-

ceeds would fund the upgrade. His lobbying secured $500,000 in funding for design and planning works. But his efforts were tarnished in April at Operation Ord hearings at the Independent Broadbased Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC). The Education Department suspended Mr Paul in April while it fully investigated his conduct, and assistant principal Naomi Reed took the helm. The anti-corruption commission heard that Chandler Park and Silverton Primary School were “banker schools” used

edly for the benefit of education bureaucrats. Mr Paul said he “implicitly trusted” Mr Napoli, and didn’t ask questions such as why the wine was being delivered to Mr Napoli’s home address. He told the hearing through a lawyer that he “categorically denies any wrongdoing”. “He did what he was instructed by a senior person who he trusted and respected,” his lawyer said. “Mr Paul received absolutely no personal benefit for operating as a banker school for Mr Napoli.”

Kinder upgrade means more places to play A NOBLE Park kinder will have 66 new places thanks to a $350,000 upgrade. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced State Government funding for Yarraman Kindergarten and Family Children Services Centre on Wednesday 2 December. The council’s community services director Mark Doubleday said the centre hosted two 30-place programs for fouryear-olds and one 22-place three-year-old program in one playroom. “The proposal is to renovate the current office space to accommodate a second 33-place kindergarten playroom with undercover verandah, children’s

bathroom, kitchen and office administration area,” he said. The renovations will also add three specialist consulting suites for health services, a multipurpose community room, a small play space for assessment and therapy consultation, and a waiting are for families. “Yarraman Kindergarten is located in an area of high levels of disadvantage and high demand for funded four-year-old kindergarten places in affordable community kindergartens,” Mr Doubleday said. He said kindergarten and playgroup played a critical role in supporting early childhood development, transition to school and family wellbeing.

TWO Comancheros from the bikie club’s Hallam chapter - including the group’s commander were arrested on Friday morning following raids in Narre Warren and Dandenong. The bomb squad was called to the Narre Warren property after explosives were allegedly found in a car during the 4 December raid. The two men were arrested by the Echo Taskforce in relation to a shooting at a restaurant in Preston a month ago. Police were called to the High Street restaurant about 3.40am on Saturday 24 October after reports of several gunshots being fired inside. No-one was injured in the shooting, and the alleged offenders fled before police arrived. On Friday 4 December the 29-year-old commander of the Comancheros Hallam chapter was arrested at a property in Fredrick Street, Dandenong, while another 24-year-old member of the bikie gang was arrested at a Heatherton Road property in Narre Warren. During the search of the Narre Warren property, detectives found a large number of guns and what appeared to be explosives were found in a car.

GREATER Dandenong CEO John Bennie made a few people blush at last weeks’ SEBN Christmas breakfast. He spoke about the council’s focus turning to revitalising Springvale. “Many of you would have had your first dance, first kiss, or first something-or-other at the Springvale Town Hall,” he said. Noting councillor Angela Long’s nervous laughter, he said: “She apparently falls into one of those categories.”

THE Dandenong and South East Manufacturing Super Event has a date - 17 May. Committee for Dandenong, South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance and the City of Greater Dandenong are working to deliver the Dandenong on Wheels follow-up during National Manufacturing Week. It’s designed to paint a positive picture of the

region’s manufacturing capabilities for future customers, investors and suppliers. A 21-YEAR-OLD Springvale man has had his licence suspended after a roadside breath test recorded 0.116 per cent. The man was fined $645 and has lost his licence for 11 months after he was caught drink driving in Oakleigh. The man was seen driving erratically along the Princes Highway about 4am on Sunday 29 November. When questioned by officers as to whether he had been drinking, the man replied, “not really”. THEY say that bea ty’s in the eye of the beholder. A $160,000 watch stolen from a Keysborough home could be a perfect example. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said thieves broke into a Hidden Grove address on 31 October and stole jewellery that included a gold Patek Philippe timepiece dripping with diamonds. “They've got lucky. Bail refused By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

Gang teens should be in school GREATER Dandenong police’s regional commander prefers not to use the term ‘Apex Gang’ for a group of young burglars and car thieves. Regardless of the description, Inspector Bruce Kitchen said the arrests of more than a dozen young offenders some as young as 13 - in Melbourne’s south-east had put the brakes on a spate of home break-ins to steal car keys and vehicles. The stolen vehicles have been used to commit armed robberies, some for joy riding and also to be stripped down for parts or rebirthing. Insp Kitchen disapproves with the use of ‘Apex Gang’ with its provocative gangsterlike connotations, preferring On his arrest, Achan gave a no-comment interview to police. He had been non-compliant with a bail support program that he was on at the time. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said it was “highly relevant” whether Achan was part of the Apex gang, whose members had been arrested over similar high-end car thefts and burglaries in recent weeks. She had recently passed judgement on several Apex Gang members, one as young as 13, she said. “In the context of that gang, (Achan) is an older offender.”

to describe the offenders as a group of young people. These types of crimes were also trending across metropolitan Melbourne, he said. “It’s a broader spectrum than just this Apex Gang. It involves a wide age group. It’s not one particular culture.” The challenge now was what to do about the young offenders’ rehabilitation. Many of them had not been in trouble with the law before, Insp Kitchen said. “They want to get them back to school and back to work. “If they go to other institutions, they learn other tricks of the trade and the offending isn’t reduced.” She adjourned the case to allow police time to establish if there was a gang link. “I’m concerned about the risk that Mr Achan is being to the community. “In one of the briefs, it talks about (the accused and associates) driving in a convoy through red lights. “I don’t have to say what the possible consequences are. We have already seen them.” Achan was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on December 21.

AN 18-YEAR-OLD alleged car thief was refused bail until his links to a so-called ’Apex Gang’ were resolved. Gobriel Achan, of Dandenong, pleaded guilty to nine charges over breaking into a Keysborough house as its three residents slept on 17 November, stealing three car keys and the corresponding three vehicles. Achan and two co-accused entered the home through a pedestrian door to a double garage, and then an internal garage door between 1am and 4am, police prosecutor Senior Constable Ryan Johnson told the court. The accused is believed to have stolen two sets of car keys from a hallway side table drawers and a set from the top of the table, as well as a wallet with a debit card and $5 cash. It was alleged Achan used a key to drive away one of the residents’ Ford XR6, while his co-accused used the other keys to take a Holden Cruze and VW Golf. His attempted purchase of goods at a Keysborough servo using the stolen debit card was declined. The three drove around the south-eastern suburbs as a convoy, speeding through speed cameras, Sen Const Johnson said. Achan and a female co-accused were found in the Cruze by police in Doveton that morning. He resisted arrest and fled from police before being found in a Doveton home’s front yard.

OPPOSITION multicultural affairs spokeswoman Inga Peulich is facing a political backlash from Indian community leaders after suing a fellow Liberal Party member for defamation. Ms Peulich has sent a defamation writ to Cranbournebased Liberal member Phillip Prasad over an article in The Australian in July in which he accused her of threatening him and deriding his Indian background during a post-state election party meeting last December. Soon after the story was published, Mr Prasad challenged Ms Peulich in the Journal to sue him if his claims were untrue. On Thursday 3 December Ms Peulich told Star News that Mr Prasad was given the opportunity to apologise and retract his claims. “This did not occur so, regrettably, I have no other options but to defend myself and the negative impact of this false allegation on my family, especially my 83-year-old mother who, along with her parents and siblings, was interned in a concentration camp. “Racism is abhorrent and (the) allegations are totally untrue. “Without a retraction and apology, I cannot let the allegations stand.” Mr Prasad has said he did not want to comment publicly. In October he told Star News: “If it’s not true, she should sue me.”

Inga Peulich is sueing a racial abuse complainant for defamation. Mr Prasad is awaiting a Liberal Party investigation into the incident. He said he’d also formally complained to police and the Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission over the incident. In a legal letter sent to Mr Prasad in July, Ms Peulich took offence at Mr Prasad’s quote in the newspaper article that she “carries the poison of racism in her”. The letter claimed the story bore the imputation that she was a “hypocrite and liar in her public stance against racism as shadow minister for multicultural affairs”. The furore has divided the Indian community, some of whom are threatening a backlash against the Liberal Party and Ms Peulich. Overseas Indian Cultural Congress secretary George Thomas said the issue was raised at a ‘community leaders’ dinner attended by more than 20 diverse community, religious

and business groups in Dandenong on 27 October. He said there was a resolve among the normally staunch Liberal gathering to defend Mr Prasad in any legal action. “We are all standing against the Liberal Party and Inga. “This will have a big impact on the Liberal Party in that corridor of Dandenong, Hampton Park and Cranbourne. This is where the Indian community is so large. “Politically, she will pay a high price.” Mr Thomas, who has been involved in Indian associations for 30 years, said the conflict could have been easily solved if Ms Peulich had apologised. Past president of the Federation of Indian Associations Victoria Vasan Srinivasan, however, backed Ms Peulich. “Inga still has good standing in the community. “She’s supported FIAV over the years and is well respected by the FIAV committee members.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Rooting for bus service

BINGO EYES DOWN 8PM

FRIDAY NIGHT

$500 JACKPOT

MR. JACKPOT LINK JACKPOT

RE: Letter to the Editor Green Tinted spectacles, Journal, 27 November. Dear Martin Pakula MP - as I said in the original article, I am glad the new State Government is proposing a bus route for the new estates of Keysborough. As a councillor representing this part of Keysborough I know how badly it is needed. Credit goes to you for responding to resident concerns and getting us to this point. But in order for it to be actually used, it needs to be frequent enough to make it a viable way of getting to the Noble Park railway station so residents will realistically use it to get to work and also get people where they want to go - which means creating a route that gets people to the locations of proposed community facilities and the soon-to-be built Keysborough South Shopping Centre. The proposed routes simply won’t achieve these objectives. That is what residents told me at the bus forum that we both attended. Let’s stop playing party and personal politics and let’s work together for the benefit of the new estates of Keysborough by sticking to the facts and the commenting on the issues. On the question of facts and in response to some of your comments: 1) I have been a vocal advocate on this issue for years by the way - including before you starting representing this area. 2) In response to your statement that “in 2010 it was mainly paddocks and a few houses” there was about 1000 homes in this area by 2010 - it wasn’t just paddocks with the first estates going in in the early 2000s. Councillor Matthew Kirwan, Red Gum Ward, City of Greater Dandenong.

Bizarre black hole IF MARTIN Pakula (Green Tinted Spectacles, Journal, 27 November) thinks one bus route is going to solve the public transport woes for Keysborough residents, he’s incredibly out of touch. As local residents know, Keysborough sits directly inside the gaping public transport black hole between the Frankston and Cranbourne/Pakenham train lines.

One new bus route will hardly fix the public transport problems in Keysborough. There are systemic problems with buses across the south-east. Routes are bizarre. Frequency drops off dramatically after about 6pm. They often don’t connect with train stations or with train timetables. What we really need is more trains with better frequency and that means high-capacity signalling and better car parking options around stations. We need proper connectivity between different transport modes and we need to get rid of the transport black holes in places like Keysborough. Mr Pakula must know that residents are unhappy with the lack of action by this and previous governments.

Students bin recycling By CASEY NEILL

DANDENONG students will be binning it to do their bit for the environment. Emerson School was among 21 recipients of cash from The Beverage Container Recycling Community Grants. The Keep Australia Beautiful and Coca-Cola Australia Foundation program funding will provide 11 dual bin recycling points around the school grounds. Teacher Fiona Bateman is educating children about the importance of recycling and the environment to provide a path to a greener future. “It is one of the most powerful things we can all do to create a positive future for the planet,” she said.

“Recycling is promoted and used in our classroom as a desirable behaviour with great overall benefits.” Ms Bateman said the grant would allow Emerson School to upgrade its school yard bins and introduce recycling in the school yard. “The new sustainable recycling system allows us to have a consistent message for our students both in and out of the classroom,” she said. Principal John Mooney said the new bins would encourage students to keep their school tidy and to continue to raise community consciousness of the importance of recycling and sustainability. “These bins will make it easier for students and staff to keep our school environment in great shape,” he said.

Recycling one plastic drink bottle saves enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes and recycling one aluminium can saves enough energy to run a television for three hours. Manufacturing 20 aluminium cans from recycled materials uses the same amount of energy as making one can from raw materials. Keep Australia Beautiful national CEO Philip Robinson said the grants had been available since 2010 to enable community groups, councils and other organisations to implement projects to benefit their area and the environment. “The grants of up to $10,000 are a practical and educational tool that keep the community free of litter and divert waste from landfill,” he said.

Rays of festive joy REAL estate agents are spreading joy in Greater Dandenong this festive season. Ray White’s Noble Park/Springvale office is for the second time participating in the A Little Ray of Giving project. It last year collected 75 gifts for underprivileged children in the area and through St Vincent de Paul distributed them to almost 50 families. A bigger total is on the cards this year and a sausage sizzle from noon to 2pm on Friday 11 December is set to boost efforts. Wrap a present and leave it under the Christmas tree at Ray White, 39 Douglas Street, Noble Park.

THE free wi-fi footprint is growing in Greater Dandenong. This month it will be switched on in Springvale’s Multicultural Place and the Noble Park Civic Space in Douglas Street. The Noble Park wi-fi zone will extend to the Aubrey Moss Memorial Garden in Douglas Street, which should provide coverage at the new Ross Reserve Skate Park. Mayor Heang Tak said free wi-fi was already available in Dandenong’s Harmony Square and at the Dandenong and Springvale libraries. “Offering free internet connection is one way to get people to stay and enjoy their environment,” he said. “Whether you want to work or study outside a local cafe or park, or you want to post a photo to social media, or monitor and respond to important emails, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the free connection.” Users can select Free Council WiFi in their wi-fi settings list and follow the prompts to connect. There are no download limits and no time limits, but users will need to log in each hour. They won’t have to provide any personal details and the wi-fi will be available from 5am to 11pm daily.

NEW HOMES & LAND

BUYERS MOVE QUICKLY TO THE RIDGE Construction is underway at Peet’s new Acacia community in the sought-after suburb of Botanic Ridge, paving the way for buyers to start building their new homes in mid-2016. Peet managing director and CEO Brendan Gore said the response from homebuyers to the new community has been incredibly positive. “The masterplan for Acacia takes full advantage of its natural setting and that is certainly proving to be a drawcard for buyers looking to live close to nature while still being close to important amenities and key transport links,” Mr Gore said. “This presents a unique opportunity for a range of homebuyers, including those looking to upgrade their home - and lifestyle.” And buyers have been quick to act, with stage one selling out and the release of stage two brought forward to meet demand. More than 60 home sites have now sold at Acacia since land sales began in July. Brett and Michelle Simmonds are delighted with their purchase at Acacia. “We knew we were on a good thing when we bought,” said 28-year-old Michelle Simmonds. “Acacia was selling like hot cakes. It’s got ‘family’ written all over it. “We live nearby and there are lots of new estates around the area but Acacia has a lot of things the others were lacking,” Michelle said. Brett and Michelle have secured one of the keenly contested corner blocks overlooking the wetlands they had their hearts set on. “We loved the block, we loved the

wetlands and there’s so much going on in the estate. “There’s the future school, parks and facilities, a shopping centre, there’s even a community centre planned,” she said. “For us with a young family, they’re all massive ticks in the box.” Michelle said the family will grow and 10-month-old Byron will have brothers or sisters to explore the wetlands with and kick a football or throw a frisbee in the park. “We’ll go for walks, feed the animals and play in the parks,” Michelle said. “We’ll be living in an estate but also surrounded by nature.” The Simmonds are planning to build their new two-storey home around a balcony with a focus on Acacia’s wetlands. “Quite literally, the balcony will be the main feature of the house,” Michelle said. ”It will be an unusual house in that we want the living areas upstairs connecting

onto a big balcony so we can do our living and entertaining overlooking the wetlands.” The Simmonds recently took their son Byron to visit Acacia and were amazed at how quickly the site works were progressing. The family is looking forward to living in Botanic Ridge, a suburb with a good name and postcode as well as easy access to Casey Fields and the amenities of Cranbourne. Acacia is just three kilometres from the Cranbourne town centre in one of Melbourne’s most sought-after locations. More than 600 households at Acacia will come to enjoy beautifully landscaped parks, designed wetlands and wide tree-lined streets that blend the community with the very best elements of the neighbouring Royal Botanic Gardens. In time, residents will also benefit from a range of planned amenities, including a

future shopping village, primary school and community centre, while the beach, Mornington Peninsula and three golf courses are just a short drive away. The new community is close to excellent transport links, with the South Gippsland Highway connecting residents to major roads and the Cranbourne Train Station just seven minutes’ drive away, offering convenient access to the Melbourne CBD. There is currently a range of home sites available with lots ranging from 336 square metres to a generous 595sqm, starting at $186,000. To find out how to make Acacia home, visit acaciabotanic.com.au, contact sales representative Georgie Smith on 0437 373 753 or drop by the Acacia Sales and Information Centre at 53 Craig Road, Botanic Ridge, on Mondays and public holidays from 1pm to 5pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 5pm.

COMING SOON Berwick’s newest estate is surrounded by green parklands and recreational fields. Offering absolute park frontage and situated within walking distance to wetlands and a future waterfront town centre, Llano presents a unique lifestyle opportunity.

FIGURES SHOW HOUSES ARE SELLING FASTER Like clearance rates are for auctions, the number of days a home is on the market is a key property indicator for private sales. In the 12 months to 31 October, Yarrawonga in the state’s northeast experienced one of the largest improvements in the median number of days on the market. The latest REIV data shows that the number of days it took to sell a home in the popular Murray River location fell by 43 days over the year to a median of 100 days. And the good news continued with 84 properties sold over the year, four times more than the same period last year.

also experienced a solid decline in the median number of days on the market, falling 21 days over the year to a median of 32 days - the second shortest period in regional Victoria. Buyer interest in coastal locations was also evident in both Anglesea and Torquay. With a median of 86 days on the market, homes in Anglesea sold 15 days faster than the same time last year. Homes in Torquay also sold faster, falling eight days over the year to 31 October to a median of 55 days. Meanwhile, Irymple in the state’s north-west had regional Victoria’s

Properties in the Gippsland town of Maffra were also on the market for considerably less time in the 12 months to 31 October. The town recorded a 33.5 day drop in median days on the market to 112 days, down from 145.5 for the same period last year. Other regional towns recording significant drops in the time it took to sell a home were Benalla and Bairnsdale, falling 29 days and 22.5 days respectively. Homes in Benalla had a median of 97 days on the market while Bairnsdale’s property market was even stronger with a median of 75 days. The Surf Coast town of Jan Juc

fewest days on the market with a median of just 30 days. Nearby Mildura and Red Cliffs were also popular with buyers with medians of 34 and 35 days respectively. Demand was also seen for homes in the Geelong suburb of Hamlyn Heights where the median number of days on the market fell 18 days over the year to 33 days. Other Geelong suburbs recording some of country Victoria’s fewest days on the market were Belmont (39 days), Corio (43 days), Grovedale (46 days) and Highton (47.5 days). Several Ballarat suburbs also made the list for fewest days on the market.

The taste of old By CASEY NEILL COOKING can transport Keysborough’s Kalyan Ky back to her homeland Cambodia. Now anyone can take that journey. Her refugee story and favourite recipes appear in Every Bite Takes You Home, out on 6 December. It features 16 refugees who now call Australia home, and profits will support asylum seekers and refugees through Stand Up, Ondru, and Foundation House. Ms Ky was born in the Khao-I-Dang Cambodian refugee camp in Thailand, on the Thai-Cambodian border, and moved to Malaysia when she was six months old. The family spent three years in Malaysian refugee camps before leaving for New Zealand where they initially lived in a refugee centre in Auckland. They spent 15 years in New Zealand before moving to join relatives in Australia in 2005. Ms Ky learnt how to cook Cambodian dishes during visits back to her homeland. “When you’re in New Zealand or Australia, you’re either working or going to school, but when you’re in Cambodia you’re just spending time with your family, and I spent several months there just learning how to cook,” she said. “I love preparing food. At that moment when it’s ready to serve, I love decorating a dish, making it special.” One of her favourites is

Kalyan Ky with the cook book. 147463 Picture: ROB CAREW dried smoked fish with pickled mustard leaves. “It’s not completely salty. It tastes like a delicacy but it is very easy to make,” she said. “I love eating mustard leaves, especially when I eat rice. It’s so delicious. “Sometimes I can live on mustard leaves, I can have them for lunch and dinner and breakfast!” She’s contributed recipes for fried fish with three flavour chilli sauce, marinated beef salad and sadao to the book. “Beef Salad is normally for

parties, and gatherings. People wouldn’t usually make it to eat at home because it’s a big meal,” she said. “Normally if you make it, you make a lot. “Sadao is the same. It incorporates a lot of ingredients and it takes a long time to pick off all the pieces of the sadao, so you only see it made on special occasions.” Ms Ky said food was comforting and had the power to bring people together, something she saw as a significant aspect of multicultural Melbourne.

The pair have been attending fortnightly line dancing classes since Emerson campus principal Dianne Wright started teaching them at the Dandenong retirement village in 1995. She refused payment, so participants have made a $2 donation that’s presented to the school at an annual concert and lunch. Principal John Mooney at this year’s event on Thursday 26 November accepted a cheque for $1100 from Valley Village Mews manager Cynthia Mack. Mr Mooney thanked the residents for their generosity before everyone tucked into a special luncheon of pizza and cake. BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Recycle your skills By CASEY NEILL THE future is all about flexibility, businesses at the SEBN Christmas Industry Breakfast have been told. “I want you to think of yourselves as a recyclable bottle,” global business futurist Morris Miselowski said at Sandown Racecourse in Springvale on Thursday 3 December. The morning’s 190 guests donated cash to buy Christmas gifts for those less fortunate, to be distributed through agencies including Dandenong Community Aid and Advice Bureau. The generosity continued when Simone Hackett from State Schools Relief Fund (SSRF) spoke about how money from the Take a Swing for Charity golf day had supported struggling students. Golfers raised more than $44,000 at the SEBN event in February, which helped SSRF to dress 679 students at 17 schools within Greater Dandenong in $95,977 worth of clothing this year. SSRF will also be the recipient of next year’s golf day proceeds, which are scheduled for Monday 22 February at Sandhurst Golf Club. Mr Miselowski told breakfast guests that some of today’s most successful companies had no assets - driver service Uber owns no cars, accommodation service

Martin Miselowski speaks to SEBN breakfast guests. 148002 Airbnb owns no hotels. He expects this trend towards “using rather than owning” to continue. Tomorrow’s jobs will include tasks not yet imagined. Mr Miselowski said everyone would be employing a transhumanist designer within 10 years a human resources role assigning tasks to humans and robots. Other roles of the future will include vertical farming and genome specialists, 3D prosthetic

engineers and machine linguists. Accountants and auditors, retail sales assistants and library technicians are among those on the way out, Mr Miselowski said. He said employing many people in one space from 9am to 5pm weekdays would become anachronistic, and businesses would instead have a small team they could add to when necessary. Wearable devices will continue to increase in popularity, he said, to the point where in 10 years everybody would be wear-

ing nine devices at any given time. “The world is increasingly based on data,” he said. Mr Miselowski said more inanimate objects would be hooked up to interact with and understand humans. Homes will recognise that their owners are about to arrive and open the garage door, turn on lights and more. “And next year will be a huge growth year for drones across the planet,” Mr Miselowski said. But don’t worry: “This is not robots taking over the world.” “There will still be humans at every touch point. “At the core we are still humans. We still have need for all the products and services in this room.” He said today’s tsunami of new technology would calm down in 10 to 20 years. “We’re seeing so much that is so different,” he said. Autonomous cars could be a matter of years from dominating roads, dramatically reducing - if not eliminating - road deaths. Mr Miselowski said they’d also remove the need for driver’s licences and so improve transport accessibility for the disabled, elderly and young. The more efficient mechanised driving would also be better for environment, he said, and less stressful for commuters.

Engineers look to build new sub By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG South casting company could play a key role in creating Australia’s newest submarines. AW Bell was among select businesses to meet with German submarine manufacturer ThyssenKrupp during a recent Australian roadshow with potential suppliers. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Australia (TKMSA) was preparing a bid to supply new submarines to the Royal Australian Navy through the $50 billion SEA 1000 Future Submarine Program. AW Bell CEO Sam Bell said the company had evolved since its establishment in the early 1950s. “Foreseeing ongoing decline in automotive work, in the ’80s we embarked on an innovation program to stay ahead of such industry change,” he said. This developed new casting processes, including aluminium billet equivalent (ABE), which attracted work from sectors such as defence. “The high strength and density of parts made via ABE allowed sophisticated

geometries than could not, normally, be machined from a bar of metal,” Mr Bell said. “With this technology we were able to secure supply contracts for five components for the F35 joint strike fighters and numerous other support components for that program. “These technology improvements also allowed AW Bell to secure contracts for some 20 components used in ongoing remediation of Collins class submarines.” TKMSA chairman John White said the company was keen to meet the AW Bell team given this track record. “As the most experienced designer and builder of conventional submarines, we have been very impressed with the calibre and track record of AW Bell and other potential suppliers we’ve met recently,” he said. “We base this evaluation on delivering more than 160 submarines across 20 different navies.” Final bids for the project were submitted on 30 November and it is anticipated that the Federal Government will make further announcements early next year.

JOHN Laughton never had to pull a trigger or launch a missile but for 219 days he sat in readiness on board a Naval ship on the South Korean coast line. Now at 87 years of age the former peacekeeper with the Royal Australian Navy was recognised for the third time by the South Korean government. The Naval Association of Australia’s Dandenong branch secretary said the Ambassador for Peace Medal, which was awarded as an expression of appreciation from the South Korean people, was “particularly

special to him”. “The Korean Government treats us spectacularly well,” John said. “I was invited as a guest of honour a few years ago and it was the first time I had been back to Korea since I was 24 years old and working as a radio electrician with the Navy. “People on the street would come up to me and shake my hand and say ‘thank you’ and I’ve been to many countries and I’ve never been treated as well as I was in Korea.” He was among 10 other Australian peacekeepers who were

awarded the medal on Tuesday 24 November. “I didn’t realise I was going to get a medal. It was a big surprise for me but such a great honour,” he said. John now holds three medals very close to his heart. “I’ve got three, one is a 60th anniversary of the Korean War and the other was a thankyou medal from the government that represents all the nations that fought in Korea. It’s quite unique,” he said. “I’ve scanned my medals and want to frame them and put them up on the wall.”

Fresh pathway to inclusion DANDENONG Plaza has made an historic farm more accessible for people with disabilities. The shopping centre’s owner GPT held its annual community volunteering day on 30 October. More than 20 staff from the plaza, other centres and suppliers put in pathways at the Wallara-run Sages Cottage in Baxter. Wallara uses the historic site

to provide work experience and farmyard experiences. “Everyone is mesmerised when first introduced to Sages Cottage Farm and all it has to offer,” Wallara CEO Phil Hayes-Brown said. “But we need more organisations like GPT to get behind us, to understand our vision for the property and what it can deliver for the people we support.

“GPT and the other donors have made a genuine contribution to helping us create a thriving, sustainable and inclusive community.” Dandenong Plaza operations manager Andrew Scholey said the team was extremely proud to contribute to such an historic site and knew they’d really made a difference.

POLICE have arrested two people in Noble Park over an alleged armed robbery in Frankston in early November. On Tuesday 1 December, they charged a 15-year-old Noble Park boy with theft of a motor car and handling stolen goods, and he was remanded to appear in a children’s court at a later date. They charged an 18-year-old Mulgrave woman with theft of motor car and she was bailed to appear in Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 15 March.

These were the fourth and fifth arrests in relation to the theft of a BMW during an aggravated burglary in Doncaster between 3 and 4 November. Police allege the car was then used during an armed robbery in which thieves stole a Ford XR6 in Bartlett Street about 2.40am on 6 November. The car was three days later involved in a collision in Mordialloc that killed a 47-year-old Carrum Downs woman, police said. On 26 November, police ar-

rested a 21-year-old Springvale man in an allegedly stolen car in Noble Park and charged him with armed robbery, assault, three counts of theft of motor car, possessing a drug of dependence and other related offences. On Tuesday 24 November, police arrested a 17-year-old boy in Keysborough in relation to the armed robbery. They had previously charged an18-year-old man in relation to the armed robbery and a 15-year-old boy over the fatal collision.

Back at the front By JARROD POTTER AFTER many laps around Australia on the WNBL circuit, Dandenong point-guard Amelia Todhunter has finally found her niche back at the place she belongs. Todhunter, 27, has only returned to the Rangers’ WNBL roster this season but has also flourished since inheriting the Rangers’ starting pointguard job after a following knee injury sidelined Aimie Clydesdale. “It’s been hard with Aimie gone, but it’s definitely given me an opportunity to step up and I think it’s going really well,” Todhunter said. “Rissa (coach Larissa Anderson) has a lot of confidence in me and that’s a major key to my success having the coach that backs me as the point guard.” In stark contrast to her own trying SEABL season - where she spent 13 weeks on the sidelines with knee issues of her own - she’s taken that form into the WNBL season and has enjoyed the ramped up court-time. After finishing winter with her fourth SEABL championship and second Barbara Barton Medal as SEABL grand final MVP, Todhunter has led the guard group with another returning Ranger Steph Cumming in a familiar back-court combo that’s helped the side push on to a 5-4 record. “It’s so good to be injury-free and be strong enough out there and get my court time and can prove to everyone what I can really do,” Todhunter said. “We had a bit of a scare last week - my knee blew up and was a bit tender and sore - so I was freaking out a bit, Riss was freaking out a bit, but it settled down.” She was pivotal in Dandenong’s upset 85-65 win over highly-placed Sydney Uni at home on Saturday. Todhunter racked up eight points, seven rebounds and a match-high

Relishing her expanded role in the Rangers' back-court, Amelia Todhunter has been in sensational form so Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS far this WNBL season. 146618 seven assists as part of a roster-wide demolition, highlighting what happens when the Rangers are underestimated. “We knew they were a team we really wanted to beat, especially at our home court and I think we were really keen to get the win as we lost the two weeks before,” Todhunter said. “That win against Sydney showed that when we’re on the same page we are unstoppable, especially when defence is our focus. “I was pretty surprised when I found out my assists - that I nearly got a triple double - that’s the first I’d ever get in WNBL - It was awesome and I guess the girls just got open and knocked the shots down.”

While she journeyed throughout the league in recent seasons - starting at Dandenong before heading to Bulleen, West Coast then onto the newly named Melbourne - Todhunter admitted it was nice to be finally back where it all began and reunite with long-time SEABL coach Larissa Anderson at Dandenong. “I love being back - Dandenong has always been my home, I started there when I was 18 and love being back and having Riss as a coach,” Todhunter said. “The group of girls is just awesome - we get along really well and it’s like home to me - just love it.” Todhunter will feature in her 150th WNBL clash when the Rangers head

across to Adelaide on Sunday and Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson believed Todhunter stepping up this season has been invaluable. “I am so proud of Meels (Todhunter),” Anderson said. “I think she’s a very undervalued defender and has embraced the role and whoever she has had to defend and has done a fantastic job. “There have been some games where things haven’t gone her way, but I think she’s embraced the role with both hands and is doing a great job.” Dandenong’s weekend action tips off Friday night as the Rangers battle the Perth Lynx at home from 7.30pm.

Dolphins dive into training with a passion By JARROD POTTER THERE is no time to take in the beach views down at Frankston Park for a group of up-and-coming south-east footballers. The Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls Academy (YGA) has been using the Dolphins’ VFL ground as its base of operations throughout the first phase of the 2015-16 pre-season and will get to run around there for a preseason match-up on Sunday. The girls are keen to play against the rest of the YGAs - starting Sunday 13 December - when the Stingrays battle Calder Cannons from 10.30am following a frenetic first month of pre-season training. Stingrays coach Scott Gowans thinks the training has gone well so far as the new-look line-up has taken to the tough conditions with aplomb. “To their credit, they’re (the Stingrays) are doing really well,” Gowans said. “We have 25 girls who I’ve never seen before in this program but it’s going great. “The conditions have been hard it’s windy and hot - but they’re working really well and it’s an impressive group.” Gowans is hopeful the side will

Dandenong Stingrays' Youth Girls team has been working hard at Frankston Oval ahead of a practice match there on Sunday. also play a few official matches on Frankston Oval because he wants to let his charges loose on one of the better fields in the south-east. “I love it - it’s a beautiful oval, beautiful surrounding and creates that environment for coaches, players and families to enjoy,” Gowans said.

Players from south-east juniors clubs - Beaconsfield, Cranbourne, Lyndhurst and Officer among others - have integrated with Frankston and Mornington-Peninsula players to form the best squad feasible ahead of a big year for women’s football. The competition has been ex-

panded on account of the looming 2017 deadline for the AFL Women’s competition and Dandenong is keen to improve rapidly in the meantime. The Dandenong Stingrays’ homeand-away fixture will commence early next year with matches likely to be slated for February and March.

BRAVERY almost cost Reece Piper the ability to walk, but the courage to get past his accident ensured he wouldn’t be lost to football forever. While 2015 started off amazingly for the young midfielder - earning his Berwick senior debut in round one - the rest of the year quickly became a battle to get back on the field after a harrowing TAC Cup incident. In his Dandenong Stingrays debut, Piper, 16, from Berwick, remembers his four minutes of elite football vividly. It was cut extremely short in the first term as the Stingray slammed head-first into the Shepley Oval fence from an attempted spoil on the grandstand wing. While the initial diagnosis was grim with limited movement leading doctors to think he might be paralysed - Piper escaped the incident with torn back ligaments instead of spinal fractures or worse. “I didn’t think I would be playing football again when I was hospital,” Piper said. “Just coming back and seeing where it happened and being to training with the boys, things like that just motivate you, basically. But throughout his rehabilitation - including a month off work and more than two months before he could run again - he knew he wanted to get back out to Shepley Oval. Last week Piper fulfilled the promise he made to himself as he returned to the training track with the Stingrays. He was thrilled just to be out there after his near-brush with what could’ve been a forced retirement as he looks towards the 2016 TAC Cup season. “Pretty excited, pretty keen to get back - it was a terrible incident coming into the fence but just to get back out there again with the boys is great,” Piper said. “Been hitting the gym a bit - been there for over a month and a half - getting in there and strengthening the back up. “I’ve now got a bigger mindset on what to do - rehab and those kinds of things - and just how much you’ve got to do and push yourself to get back into footy.” While most people dread pre-season training, the summer run-around means Piper is one step closer to returning to the Stingrays’ line-up for his top-age draft year and a hopeful round one return. “Going through it now, feeling that I’m feeling much better now,” Piper said. “There’s this excitement - just pushing to be out there again and most of all just getting back into it. “I need to get my fitness up to peak, work on my skills and mingling with the new boys who are training with us. “Definitely just want to play round one.” Piper said he was grateful top his family, friends and the Stingrays who stuck with him.

Rangers might be giants By JARROD POTTER WNBL - ROUND 9 REVIEW SLAYING another WNBL powerhouse, Dandenong affirmed its status as a genuine championship contender with a 65-63 win over Perth Lynx. While it was easy going at first for the Rangers - having extended and held a 10-point lead throughout the match - it came down to the wire as Perth almost snatched victory on the last shot of the game. A dying-seconds steal from Amelia Todhunter (four points, eight rebounds) ricocheted off her legs as she charged back up court, giving the ball back to Perth with seven seconds left. The in-bound went to three-point dynamo Sami Whitcomb (10 points) - who was corralled to the top of the key by Alison Downie (seven points) and despite putting the step-back shot up, it bounced off the rim to give Dandenong its second top-of-the-ladder scalp in as many weeks. Having lost twice to the Lynx this year, both over in Western Australia, the Rangers welcomed the chance to amend prior mistakes. It started much better than it ended for the Rangers as the first half was dominated by Jacinta Kennedy (12 points, seven rebounds) - who picked up where she left off last week against Sydney Uni. Winding back the clock, the 33-year-old centre gave a lesson to her younger counterparts as Natalie Burton (10 points) and Louella Tomlinson (six points) were well contained. Former Ranger Carley Mijovic (12 points) was the only one of the taller Lynx brigade to really shine as she proved a handful inside the key or at the top of it nailing threes - a staggering effort for a 21-year-old 196cm power forward. Dandenong’s other stand-outs were week-in, week-out warriors Steph Cumming (15 points), Sara Blicavs (15 points) and Downie - with the trio blanketing any offensive outlay from the Lynx. While the shooting work from neither side was particularly impressive, Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson was thrilled with the defensive effort to hold another strong side to a sub-70 total. “It really shouldn’t have come down to that,” Anderson said. “We gave up some poor options on offence and didn’t execute. “Looked a little bit ratty, but to keep a team like that to 63 points - we kept Sydney to 65 last

Boom crash Cobras By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 5 REVIEW (Day 2) CRAIG Slocombe might look a bit like a beardless Santa, but this week the Springvale South skipper was on the receiving end of the gifts as he was given an outright victory to push the Bloods to the top of the DDCA Turf 1 ladder. SPRINGVALE SOUTH v NORTH DANDENONG After giving away the first pile of points last week, North Dandenong (129 and 86) fell away once again to concede an outright defeat to Springvale South (2/137dec and 1/80). The Bloods’ maelstrom only took 39 overs as the home side vanquished the Northerners easily. Resistance was sporadic at best with Malinga Bandara (3/28) cashing in for another three-scalp haul as part of Springvale South’s shared efforts. Minute figures went in the ledger for Slocombe (2/1), Jarrod Armitage (2/17) and Tim Ford (2/18) with none of the Bloods’ bowlers giving an inch. After last ditch efforts from Matin Sultani (16), the outright target was revealed and it was as negligible as the visitors’ batting. Nathan King (43no) was sent into

would say about us, then we lose another player and someone else gets hurts and re-jiggle it again,” Anderson said. “All the girls deserve a pat on the back for how hard they’re working they’re really pushing each other ... for us we just want to be consistent and the last two weeks at least have been consistent.” The win leaves Dandenong knocking on the

The Bloodhounds’ 15-year-old sensation pierced McCartney’s defences soon after his half century and followed up with Bracey a few runs later to leave the Western visitors in shambles. Dandy tiny triumph By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 10 (Twenty20) MEAGRE rations proved enough for Dandenong (8/92) to get by against Geelong (5/87). After Tom Donnell (21) and Brett Forsyth (14) got the side away, a familiar affliction set into the Panthers’ attack. Forsyth had an early chance dropped in the deep but couldn’t cash in afterwards as the small boundaries at Shepley Oval seemed fortified against Dandenong’s best efforts. From set and ready to fire at 0/42, to scrambling to reconsolidate at 4/49, the old ways began to creep back in. It took a stand up innings from Tanner Stanton (21) to correct the sinking innings and he eventually found help down the order via first grade debutant Peter Cassidy (10no) who pushed the tally to 8/92 at the completion. But if Dandenong’s innings was chaotic, the Geelong was se-

date ... practically comatose in fact. Hayden Butterworth (39) went at a Twenty20 snail’s pace - striking at 75 - as he and Josh McDonald (25) cantered through the opening phase of the clash. A couple of clutch wickets when Geelong was ready to launch proved devastating as Brent Fairbanks (2/6) sent McDonald back to the sheds via a run out. Cassidy (1/13) chipped in for his first wicket before Fairbanks struck again to leave Geelong in disarray. Butterworth’s glacially-paced innings drew to an end via Fairbanks as well as the visitors had no more answers to Dandy’s line and length. The win keeps Dandenong above the fold - sitting eighth in Victorian Premier Cricket heading into the Christmas break. Dandenong faced Melbourne away on Sunday after the Journal went to print and will return to the whites on Saturday when facing Camberwell.

Celestine’s last throw at shot put success By JARROD POTTER ONE state final, one state championship win. This incredible conversion-rate happened at this year’s School Sport Victoria Track and Field Championships as Noble Park athlete Celestine Marsters did her school proud in the 3kg shot put. The Keysborough College Banksia Campus student made the most of her first appearance when she found those extra few centimetres to put herself onto the top of the podium. “I just found shot put fun to do,” Marsters said. “I like to do a bit of javelin and discus as well - I came second in the division in javelin but didn’t make it through to state. “Every single time I’ve done shot put I’ve gone to regionals, but this is

WILD RAIN, winner of Saturday’s $120,000 Listed City of Greater Dandenong Stakes (1000 metres), on the Sandown Hillside track, will head to the Gold Coast next month for the $10 million Magic Millions race day. The four-year-old mare, trained at Flemington by Mark Kavanagh has an imposing record over the 1000 metres with three wins and two placings from seven tries at the trip. Saturday was her second Listed win having also won the Lightning Stakes at Morphettville in Adelaide in July and has finished second twice at recent outings. The win brought minor relief for Mark Kavanagh who has been dealing with ongoing Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board hearing of charges relating to elevated cobalt levels since last Monday, alongside fellow trainer Danny O’Brien. Mark’s son and assistant trainer Levi Kavanagh said his parents had more reasons than most to let their hair down, with Mark’s wife and Levi’s mum Isobel a part-owner. “Yeah I think she’ll be pretty happy, she might even take Dad out to dinner tonight,” Levi said post-race. Winning jockey Stephen Baster had prime vantage point of the four-year old’s potential as Wild Rain flew past the post. “She’s very fast,” Baster said of Wild Rain, “I said to Levi, ’We might sit off them today’, but she was going too fast, she basically just towed me around. Credit to Levi and Mark,” “Her record speaks for itself - she’s very consistent, just too speedy for them today.” Wild Rain now has six wins and four placings from 15 starts. Saturday marked an important moment in the career of Cranbourne trainer, Trudi Christie, when Electric Fusion won the $90,000 Yarraman Village Plate (1600 metres). It marked the first city winner for the mother of two. “I’ve only got a small team of horses, but they’re like family,” she said.
