Plan to play By JESSE GRAHAM IT’S one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Yarra Ranges, and a playground residents and visitors have used in its various forms for the last 25 years. Now, the council wants to know residents’ thoughts on what form it will take next, with $1.4 million slated for a brand new playground at Lillydale Lake. The council announced late last month that it was beginning consultation on a redevelopment of Lillydale Lake’s playground, with construction to
begin mid-2016. Residents are being asked to put their thoughts, feelings and ideas into words and help shape the future of the playground, with online submissions being taken and consultation at the lake on Saturday 12 December. Billanook Ward councillor, Maria McCarthy, said there was a “pretty spectacular” vision for the site, turning the playground into an area for people of all ages and abilities. “They want it to be an interactive
play space, so it’s not just for children,” Cr McCarthy said. “It’s for little babies, people with disabilities; it’s for young parents, for parents and grandparents. “It will encourage children to go there and actually play - that’s what kids want, somewhere to explore for themselves.” Cr McCarthy said the new playground, in whatever form it might take, would be more accessible for those in wheelchairs or living with a disability - currently, she said the ramps were too
steep for wheelchair access. The redevelopment comes after the Victorian Government allocated $1 million in funding to the project through the Interface Development Fund, complementing council’s $400,000 funding for the project. The pop-up consultation will run from noon-2pm on Saturday 12 December, at Lillydale Lake, and follows one previously held on 29 November. To make a submission online, visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/playspace.
THE VICTORIAN Government and Box Hill Institute are running a competition to re-name Lilydale’s former Swinburne campus, ahead of its re-opening next year. Monbulk MP and Education Minister James Merlino announced the competition on Friday 20 November, where residents will be able to put forward a name for the new campus. The competition follows the announcement in mid-October that BHI, with William Angliss and Deakin University, would take over the site, with classes to begin as of first semester next year. Mr Merlino said an “unprecedented” campaign from community members to re-open the campus influenced the competition. “They deserve to have a say on what the site will be called,” he said. The competition asks for a new name for the campus, as well those submitting names to say in 25 words or less why their entry is the “perfect name”. A description on BHI’s website said entries should be unique, memorable and reflect the area of Lilydale; be short, catchy and clear; and should suit the campus “for years to come”. The winning name will be used for brochures, maps, T-shirts and on the bus route that stops at the campus. The winning entrant will receive a VIP invitation to the campus opening in March, as well as a Yarra Valley gift hamper along with the prestige of naming the campus. Crash prompts warning TWO ambulances and an air-ambulance helicopter combined to treat a motorcyclist injured in the Bunyip State Park, Gembrook, on Monday afternoon. Ambulance Victoria paramedic team manager Bryan Macdonald said a man aged in his fifties came off his dirt bike on the Bunyip Ridge Track just before 2pm. “The man told us he hit a rock, which caused his bike to topple, and
slid along the ground with the bike on his leg for about 10 metres,” he said. “Thankfully, the man was wearing protective armour and a helmet which reduced the chances of a serious injury. “He couldn’t put weight on the leg, making it impossible for him to ride.” His friends provided first aid, while paramedics in a four-wheel-
drive ambulance made their way into the park. An intensive care flight paramedic was winched into the bush from an air-ambulance helicopter. “The man wasn’t seriously injured so a decision was made to take him out of the park in the fourwheel-drive ambulance,” he said. The man was then transferred to a normal road ambulance and taken to Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition.
“Obviously, when someone is injured in an accident in remote country, it will take us some time to get to them, and to get them out,” he said. “Accidents like these highlight the importance of riders having proper safety equipment, a mobile phone or satellite phone if they don’t have mobile coverage, and consider getting a personal Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).”
Council pays tribute to volunteers By JESSE GRAHAM THE YARRA Ranges Council last week paid tribute to more than 100 of its volunteers, hosting an event in Mount Dandenong to celebrate decades dedicated to helping others. On Friday 4 December, the council held an International Volunteer Day event at SkyHigh Mount Dandenong, bringing together 130 volunteers who work across the municipality. Mayor Jason Callanan, himself a volunteer with St John Ambulance, SES, and Medical Services, said volunteers were “essential” to the community. He said the event also paid tribute to long-time volunteers, who had put in 25, 30 and 40 years of work. “Without them, the Yarra Ranges would not be the place it is today,” he said. “We often underestimate the value and contribution volunteers make to the community, but we’d be lost without them.” Cr Callanan said Mooroolbark’s Fran Henderson, a volunteer with
Councillor Len Cox with long-term volunteers Fran Henderson, Joan Pedler and Dory Goudswaard and councillor Maria McCarthy. 148117 Picture: CONTRIBUTED Lilydale Meals on Wheels for the last 40 years, was an example of the hardworking volunteers who called the Yarra Ranges home. Ms Henderson said she got started with Meals on Wheels after reading an advertisement in a local
paper, and had since put in 40 years with the group, working each Friday to deliver meals to Yarra Ranges residents. She said that she built up a rapport with many of the residents, helping some with disabilities to

write their Christmas cards, or just listening to stories about their days. “Sometimes, the Meals on Wheels volunteers are the only contact they have with people,” she said. “That social aspect, it’s a great way in which to check that these people are okay.” “I had another dear man, I always had to go to him last, because he’d go to a Bible study, and when I’d arrive, I’d say ‘How was Bible study?’, and he’d say ‘Oh, it was champion!’.” She said the man died at his kitchen table, still reading his Bible. Ms Henderson, one of the many residents recognised at the event for their work, said she would keep volunteering for as long as she could, and encouraged others to get involved with their local groups. “It’s very important, and without volunteering, this nation wouldn’t run,” she said. The Mount Dandenong Primary School also performed at the International Volunteer Day event, and volunteers were awarded with certificates, acknowledging their service.
In brief Campus vandalised POLICE are calling for witnesses after a breakin at Lilydale’s former Swinburne campus, where buildings were vandalised. Between 5pm on Tuesday 1 December and 1pm the following day, doors were forced open at the former campus on Jarlo Drive in Lilydale. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said damage was caused to “several” buildings, with items stolen and graffiti sprayed on doors and walls. Binds and a fire extinguisher were stolen from the buildings, which will be opened next year as the home of the new Box Hill Institute campus. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Cash stolen from car A WALLET was stolen from an unlocked car in Mount Evelyn last week, with police appealing for those with information to come forward. Between 8.30pm on Wednesday 2 December, and 8.45am the next day, thieves took a wallet and CDs from the glovebox of a twincab ute left unlocked in Quinn Crescent, Mount Evelyn. Cash was also stolen from the car’s centre console, with a total value of $800. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Udder traffic chaos OLINDA police hoofed it to Wellington Road on Saturday morning where an escaped bull was causing udder traffic mayhem. Officers engaged in a mad-cow-chase until they herded the large runaway bull into a nearby paddock. The bull was moo-ved through an open gate and safely into the paddock, before rangers were charged to locate the bull’s owner. There was no damage to vehicles or the bull and police were over the moon the incident was cow-tailed.

Roads and savings main focus IN NOVEMBER I was privileged to be elected mayor of Yarra Ranges for the next 12 months. I know it’s a big responsibility but one that I am excited to take on. The business of council is huge with more than 140,000 residents to serve and over $150 million of ratepayers’ money to use responsibly. One of my top priorities is roads. We have so many roads in the Yarra Ranges and I know many of them need
I want to know if we can do better. I’m also keen to help communities connect better to council facilities. I’m interested in recreational facilities and in ensuring we get back to core council business and I want to make sure we are spending ratepayers’ money in the right area. Next year there are some exciting projects coming up which I look forward to being a part of, including the long-awaited Monbulk Regional Soc-

HAPPY snapper Rob Bonici has submitted this incredible image of an eagle flying over The Patch recently. Rob said he had to rush in order to get the shot. “I was driving through The Patch when I noticed this enormous wedge-tailed eagle fly out in the forest. I happened to have my camera on the passenger seat so I quickly pulled over and started taking photos. This is my favourite because it shows a gutsy little raven trying to scare off the eagle”. The photo was taken with a 300mm lens. The Mail is asking all passionate shutterbugs to submit their favourite images for publication. Pool re-opens with a bang By PETER DOUGLAS AFTER much hard work, the Olinda Community Pool Association enjoyed the fruits of its labour with the re-opening of the town’s pool last Saturday, 5 December. With an estimated 600 people attending throughout the day, the ‘First Swim of Summer’ party has been labelled a huge success, with the featured bands, competitions, foods, displays and the swimming proving enormously popular. The iconic pool, originally built in the early 1960s, was closed in spring
2013 after a crack appeared in the pool. James Edge, from the association, said the turnout proved the community wanted this pool. “The day went off without a hitch, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day,” he said. “The party was great ... right down to the weather, it was spectacular. “It was fantastic to see so many people chatting while their kids enjoyed a swim.” Mr Edge said the day was the result of a collaborative effort between the association, Bendigo Bank, Belgravia
Leisure, Yarra Ranges Council and the many supporters. “The community needs, wants and loves this pool,” he said. “We’re very grateful to the Bendigo Bank and Shire of Yarra Ranges for sponsoring the party.” Mr Edge suggested that further such events could take place, with many responding positively to a poll about future entertainment at the site. Also, a barbecue is set to be built at the site shortly, which will encourage families and groups to hold events and get-togethers.
Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan said he was glad to see the pool reopening after advocating to keep the site. “We have worked hard, with support from the State Government, to ensure the people of Olinda again have a local pool,” he said. “I look forward to seeing the local community enjoy their pool this summer.” Mr Edge, too, shared this sentiment, encouraging the community to include the pool in the recreation routine. Among the guest speakers included
John Faull, an original campaigner, who gave a history of the pool and the fight for its retention. Cr Callanan spoke about his change of position to keep the pool after the historic community meeting at Olinda Hall. Deputy Premier and Member for Monbulk James Merlino spoke about Labor’s commitment of $500,000 to the pool after the initial meeting. Also during the party, children from the local primary schools - including from Olinda, Mt Dandenong, Ferny Creek and Sassafras, sang the national anthem.

By JESSE GRAHAM THE world's leading expert on the Leadbeater’s Possum has said artificial tree hollows are not a “failsafe” option for the critically-endangered animal after a VicForests discovery last month. On Friday, 27 November, VicForests announced that possums had been discovered living in or using 11 man-made tree hollows carved into trees in Warburton, Powelltown and Noojee. The announcement came after remote sensor cameras were used to monitor the holes, and photographs from the cameras show two possums at one of the hollows. VicForests’ general manager of planning Nathan Trushell said the study was undertaken with VicForests and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s (DELWP) Arthur Rylah Institute (ARI). “The possum builds a very distinctive nest using strips of bark, and remote sensor cameras have captured numerous images of possums carrying bark in their tails as they head up to the hollows to build a home,” he said. Mr Trushell said that 72 hollows were created at 18 sites, and that 11 of these were either occupied or contained “evidence” of nests being built. But Australia National University Professor David Lindenmayer, AO, said the hollows were necessary because of the logging body “mismanaging” the forests. “They’re the ones that have created this shortage of natural hollows,” he said. “So here we have an example of animals using artificial hollows, not because they want to, but because they have no other choice.” Prof Lindenmayer said that hollows took between 100-150 years to develop in Leadbeater’s habitat trees, and that artificially creating hollows was a “band-aid” solution. “This is like a band-aid for a major burns victim,” he said. “This is not going to solve the problem, VicForests knows that. “We have literally no evidence that this is going to be a failsafe strategy for the next 150 years, because that’s how long it takes to re-grow a big hollow tree.” Mr Trushell said the trees where hollows were
Leadbeater's Possums seen carrying bark towards artificial tree hollows in the Warburton area. 147993 Picture: VICFORESTS made were in areas where possums were recently detected, with trees younger than those used by the possum. “This is the first step in looking at new ways to create nesting sites for the species and, while the findings don’t solve the challenges facing the possum and its preferred habitat, the initial results are fantastic,” he said. He said the monitoring program “has only just begun”, and that the sites would continue to be monitored - along with 116 colonies detected since December last year, outlined in a recentlyreleased report by the Victorian Government. The artificial tree hollows were part of 13 recommendations handed down by the Leadbeater’s Possum Advisory Group (LPAG) to the previous State Government in 2014. The future of the possum is currently being discussed by a Forest Industry Taskforce, with industry, government and environmental representatives meeting to form recommendations, which will be released mid-2016.
Volunteer grants up for grabs CASEY MP Tony Smith is calling on community groups to put their hands up for grants to help volunteers, with $20 million up for grabs from the Federal Government. Mr Smith announced on Monday 2 November that applications were now open for the latest round of the government’s Volunteer Grants. Community groups can ap-
ply for grants of between $1000 and $5000 for equipment such as computers, tools, air-conditioners or sporting items, or to offset fuel, travel and training costs from volunteer work. “This is a great opportunity for local not-for-profit organisations to apply for a grant to help make the work of their volunteers easier, safer and more enjoyable,” he said.
Mr Smith said volunteers were “the lifeblood and backbone of our community”, and encouraged groups to apply for the funding. Applications close at 2pm on Wednesday 9 December. For more information, or to apply, visit dss.gov.au/grants, call 1800 183 374, or email vg2015@dss.gov.au.

TrailRider trailblazer By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE DANDENONG Ranges is opening new avenues in disability access to national parks with the introduction of a TrailRider, a modified all-terrain wheelchair. David Stratton from Newstead near Castlemaine has been working closely with Parks Victoria to bring the invention here after using one
when on holiday in Canada. The TrailRider is a cross between a rickshaw and a wheelchair and can handle more rugged bush trails than conventional wheelchairs. The addition of the TrailRider in the Dandenong Ranges means there are now 11 all-terrain wheelchairs available to explore Victoria’s park trails. The chair is motorised and has
the ability to navigate the rough bush terrain in the Dandenong Ranges, making it easier for visitors with limited mobility to enjoy more of the ranges. John Kenwright, Community Inclusion co-ordinator for Parks Victoria said the new wheelchair opened up possibilities for people to enjoy the parks and trails that they might not have been able to previously.
“Everyone has the right to enjoy the benefits of being in nature, and we want to help everyone to be active in our parks. This is just one way we are making this possible, he said. The TrailRider is located at Grants on Sherbrooke cafe at Grants Picnic Area in Mount Dandenong National Park. It can be booked by calling 9755 2888.
YARRA Ranges Council has set out its formal Tip Pass Policy for the coming three years – though residents will continue to have to pay upfront when dropping off rubbish. At a council meeting on Tuesday 24 November, Yarra Ranges councillors unanimously passed the council’s Tip Pass Policy, with a condition that the policy is reviewed in three years. The item came before the meeting because council provides free tip passes to charities, community groups and the CFA and SES to use at the municipality’s waste transfer stations. In the 2014/’15 financial year, $19,000 worth of tip passes were handed out to various groups, including Clean Up Australia Day participants and Friends Of groups. The policy outlines the eligibility for groups and residents applying to the council for passes, and the maximum amount of passes available – 12 in a year for those able to request them. The council meeting’s officer’s report noted that providing each of the Yarra Ranges 58,000 properties with a tip pass would cost $4.64 million if all were redeemed. “It is therefore considered that the current method of kerbside and hard and green waste services, combined with the weekly kerb side waste collection and fortnightly recycling and optional green waste collection services is the optimum method for assisting residents across the municipality with the disposal of their waste, the report read. Mayor Jason Callanan said, in the past, tip passes were used as “bargaining tools between residents and tradespeople, and led to some people being exploited. “It became a bit of a bartering thing, so it was unfair to use, he said. He said the waste collections run by council allowed residents to dispose of their rubbish without having to pay tip fees. For the council meeting minutes and the full policy, visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

Grant is a boost to native animals
Winners of the Monbulk Fun Run put in a great effort during the popular community event.
Lapping up fun run at the club THE Monbulk Cricket Club hosted its renowned Monbulk Fun Run recently. The sun was out and some much needed funds were raised for the reserve’s new pavilion as well as a local family in need.
Thanks also went to Tammy Roberts for her photography as well as Monbulk MP James Merlino and the Monbulk Bendigo Bank for again supporting the event on 29 November. The club would like to thank everyone who partici-
pated, volunteered, cheered and supported the community event. Winners included Chris Rak (8km winner), Dana Dekkers (8km winner), Scott Bennett and Dexter Wood (U18 8km winner), Holly Blake (U18 8km winner),
Ben Grimes (4km winner), Indi Linde (4km winner), Oskar Smethurst (U18 4km winner), Zali Utting (U18 4km winner), Jed Fraser (special effort for running 8km), and Matt and Hayley Bull (1st Pram).
THE Yarra4Life Project has received a major boost after securing a $100,000 grant from the Victorian Government. The environmental project, run by the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority, aims to protect, improve, increase and connect habitat for native animals including the helmeted honeyeater and Leadbeater’s possum. The grant was awarded under the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s Threatened Species Protection Initiative and will assist in the implementation of Yarra4Life’s ‘Securing the Future of Victoria’s State Emblems’ Project. Partners involved in this project include Trust for Nature, Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, Parks Victoria and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. The main objective of this proj-
ect is to permanently secure land that will become a key site for future rehabilitation to support populations of helmeted honeyeater and Leadbeater’s possum. Yarra4Life Project co-ordinator, Mary-Kate Hockey, said the grant was valuable. “This grant will make a very important contribution to helmeted honeyeater and Leadbeater’s possum habitat by extending their habitat and providing them with a safe and secure environment to thrive in,” she said. This grant will complement the significant work the Yarra4Life project has achieved to date. In 2014-15, Yarra 4 Life completed a series of studies to identify high priority sites and began incentives for private landholders targeting pest plane and animal control and revegetation.
Deserving a makeover By PETER DOUGLAS ONE lucky lady in the Dandenong Ranges could be in line for a makeover in the New Year. A group of businesses in the area have combined forces to offer a fantastic prize, called New Year New You, which is aimed at giving a boost to someone who deserves a little pampering. Brownyn Campbell from Gifted Australia is one of the drivers of the project, which she said was just a way to give back to the community. “We’ve been encouraging nominations, and we’ll eventually pick a
winner who will be pampered and made to feel wonderful,” she said. “It may be someone who has had a tough year and needs a bit of a treat.” In addition to a makeover and a photo shoot, the winner will receive some flowers, canapes and plenty more. “Imagine their face when they get the call to say they’ve won,” she said. If you know someone in the local community who deserves to be pampered, nominate them. To enter, visit www.facebook. com/newyearnewyoucompetition.

The veteran By TIM SCOTT, OLINDA CRICKET CLUB BACK in the spring of 1992, the Olinda Ferny Creek Football Club (as it was known back then) had a change of coaching staff, with both the senior and reserves positions changing for the 1993 season. This marked the arrival of Kevin ‘KB’ Brickley into our midst. By the end of that 1993 season, he had become so entrenched in the community that he began an indelible association with the OCC. Sadly, that came to an end on the field last Sunday after 22 years as a player. ‘KB’ has played cricket in all senior grades, from 1st XI to many years in the one-day side, through to being one of our original veterans. He has won numerous bowling and fielding awards and has always been a super competitive man. He has played nearly all his cricket in tandem with OCC legend Glenn ‘Choco’ Taylor and has many fond memories of playing with him. Choco knew KB so well that sometimes when a catch was hit to KB, he’d yell out nice and loud “Ahh, he’ll drop it again". KB inevitably did. From an individual point of view, he has a very vivid memory of Craig ‘Spotty’ Jennings blasting 240 down at Billanook College before tea. He remembers he did the first stint of umpiring which lasted 10 overs, just as Spotty reached his 100. He also had the unique opportunity for a few years to play cricket with his son, Rob, which he said was a huge highlight. From a team point of view, he had the unenviable record of playing in seven losing OCC grand finals over the journey, which ultimately provided the main drive for him to continue up until the age of 59. Of course, last year, the veterans side cracked it for the club’s first ever vets premiership. KB was front and centre in the result of the game (took three wickets including the final premiership clinching one) as well as the after-match celebrations (see attached photos).

Kevin 'KB' Brickley is pictured celebrating the veterans premiership win with his mates. 148021 This sealed his cricketing fate really as he now had what he wanted, saying recently ‘the motivation to play has finally disappeared’. KB said the Olinda Cricket Club is a club full of genuine people who care; it’s been a club that’s been a huge part of his life, and a place where you would dearly love to see your kids grow up in. He loves that he’s made so many reliable friends; he loves that the club always gives people ‘a go’ and he loves that it’s a place where you can just be yourself. From all of us who’ve had the opportunity to play cricket with you, to watch you, and to get you know you privately and develop strong friendships, congratulations on an outstanding contribution to the club. We will all miss you on the field and off it, but we know you won’t be a stranger. Well played and congrats KB - we dip our lids to you.

THESE school holidays are the perfect time to visit a boutique fruit orchard in the Yarra Valley that grows over 450 varieties of fruit. That’s right - 450, can you name that many? Rayner’s Orchard have fruit growing all year round, summer being the best time of year, because of that juicy, sweet stone fruit. The Rayner’s fruit tasting tractor tours run daily between 9am-5pm right through summer holidays (closed Christmas Day only) and tours include up to 10 fruit samples around the orchard. How about learning to bottle and preserve your own fruit? Fruit Bottling Workshops are on offer every day also (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) with session times in the morning and afternoon. Bookings are required for these workshops and they run for 2-3 hours with morning or afternoon tea included. Rayner’s Stonefruit Season is now well and truly here. On any day, you will find dozens of different varieties of peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots and a few non-stone fruit varieties as well. The Rayner’s also have the Peach cafe on site which serves many delectable treats for both young ones and adults to enjoy on a day out in the orchard. It was in 1977 that Len and Heather purchased the 37 and a half acre bush block that they have have transformed in a magnificent tourist destination that all are invited to enjoy. Rayner’s Orchard is located at 60 Schoolhouse Road, Woori Yallock. For more details, contact (03) 5964 7654.

Life of the party at Sooki By PETER DOUGLAS BELGRAVE will play host to music royalty as Jeff Martin touches down for a special performance on Sunday 13 December. For this show, the Tea Party frontman will leave behind his penchant for exotic instruments and unveil just his acoustic guitar. Martin is coming off a productive year creatively and audiences will be treated to some new material as well as some Tea Party favourites. The enigmatic multi-instrumentalist told the Mail that he is looking forward to performing within an intimate setting. “We’ve had a heavy touring year so I’m looking forward to playing some acoustic shows,” he said. “It’s proof of the quality of Tea Party songs that you can strip them back bare and they still sound great.” Martin is well-known for his fondness of MiddleEastern music and tunings. He’s been in Morocco playing around with different instruments and writing new songs. The Canadian band has developed a close relation-
ship with Australia and first endeared themselves to national audiences in 1994 with its single Save Me. Founding members Martin, Jeff Burrows and Stuart Chatwood have worked tirelessly since, releasing many hits. The band broke up in 2005, citing creative differences, but reunited in 2011. Martin attributed their longevity to their close bond. “I’ve known Jeff (Burrows) since I was five years old, there are not many bands that have their origins in their childhood,” he said. “We love each other like family, we fight like brothers too but that’s what makes the Tea Party a very special band.” The band has just played to sold-out shows in Brisbane. Martin, too, has been expanding his horizons creatively, driving a highly successful sound art exhibition in Sydney. There are also plans for solo releases next year, as well as continuing his ongoing collaborations with singer-songwriter Sarah McLeod.
Jeff Martin from acclaimed band the Tea Party will be performing at the Sooki Lounge.
Badness: the 10 worst films of 2015 THIS may have had more mediocre-to-bad sequels than any other year in recent memory. Such franchise continuations are amply represented among this year’s worst films, but the sad stand-alone disasters have also turned up quite a bit, too. Here are my picks for the worst films of 2015. 10.Unfriended - A decently suspenseful horror film marred by one-dimensional characters who you don’t care about as they get picked off. 9. Pan - While I liked this more mature take on the Peter Pan story, most people (especially fans) will find it unsettling and inappropriate and the film is also burdened with listless pacing and messy action choreography. 8. The Age of Adaline - A science fiction romance of serious wasted potential, there is a

zarrely dark conclusion and how much of an annoying tool the title character is. Insurgent - With more set-up than story, deadpan performances from the heroes and overblown acting from the villains, Insurgent diverges from quality very early on in its runtime. Fantastic Four - Dreary and starved of engaging characters or worthwhile action, this is the fourth failure in the Fantastic Four franchise. Taken 3 - Only slightly less sloppy than the previous Taken movie, Taken 3 is sluggish, contrived and has abysmally-shot action scenes. Fifty Shades Of Grey - A tepid and embarrassing erotic drama. The leads have no chemistry, drool out vapid dialogue and the film’s central relationship is clearly unbalanced and abusive.
2. Pixels - Mind-numbingly obnoxious (did you expect anything less from Adam Sandler?), this ’action-comedy’ is infested with cruel, infantile humour and stereotypes and has no consistency in how its villains operate. 1. Aloha - The surprising winner in this year’s line-up of trash. The protagonist is a jerk who never develops personally, no-one behaves realistically, the film can barely settle on or finish any of its plot-threads, and it depicts a very whitewashed Hawaii. Aloha ultimately feels like it was directed by an alien with no sense of subtlety. After all this negativity, I hope you’ll join me next week as I count down the very best films this year had to offer.

Why Bell Real Estate Olinda Is Different From The Rest!
We pride ourselves on being a part of our local community. Instead of the standard ‘corporate’ Christmas card this year, we organised a competition for primary school students in the Hills to draw ‘Your Christmas in the Hills’. The winning entry to be featured on our 2015 Christmas card and their school receiving a donation of $500 from Bell Real Estate Olinda.
Second prize was awarded to Ferny Creek Primary student Ashley, aged 7, who won a $250 donation to his school.
How you can support the community when you sell your property
We had an outstanding response with an overwhelming amount of participants, and the standard was so amazing that our judges Trevor and Lesley Bell awarded a second prize as well!
Last December we had a record month and we are expecting the market to remain strong over the holiday period. If you are thinking of listing your home for sale and would like to support your local school, list with Bell Real Estate Olinda and we will donate $500 on your behalf to the community / organization of your choice. For more information please contact us on 9751 2375 or customers@bellrealestate.com.au
Congratulations to Boudica, aged 7, from Sassafras Primary School who won irst prize and was presented with her award at a special assembly on November 30. The parents, teachers and students were extremely appreciative of the support from the Bell Real Estate Olinda team who attended the presentation.

Ken Hill: smile of a winner By DENNIS FULLER EMERALD GOLF SOMEONE left the heater on overnight at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday as a good roll-up fronted for the December monthly medal. With the cards all in and checked, it emerged that Ken Hill (18) walked away with the medal with the smile of a winner when his nett 67 bettered the rest. Graham White (16) was the winner in A Grade on a countback from Brock Reynolds (16) when they both scored 68. Of the rest, it was left to Dean Shannon (18) to also have 68 while Dennis Fuller (17) and Ross Martin (11) who both managed 69.
By JAMIE STRUDLEY
While having a crook day around the rest of the course, Peter Glasscock managed to be nearest the pin on the 7th, 13th and the pro pin 18th. Mike Litchfield was nearest on the 4th and that NTP whizz, John Fisher, was nearest on the 12th. As has been the case recently, the ladies medal was a race in two, with Irene Scott just triumphing over a dogged and disappointed Jane Keys. Wednesday’s Often Foolish Golf (OFG) was a stableford event. Geoff Whittaker (28) clobbered the rest into submission with 45 points. Bobby Kennedy (18) was next with 43 - then John Piggot (24) on 42 while Ben Balfour (24), Brian McCoy (36) and Peter Clowes all scored 41.
THE warm conditions on Saturday morning did not deter a fantastic turnout at Yarra Ranges Athletics’ meeting. Many athletes made the most of the excellent conditions to record personal bests. The club is renowned for its inclusiveness and encouragement; Saturday morning was no exception with plenty of encouragement and support for all the athletes from parents and fellow athletes. Great to see! They also had a three-club members competing at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships held at Lakeside Stadium from Friday to Sunday. Lateisha Willis was the star performer, winning the gold medal in the Under 16 Girls 90m hurdles and 200m hurdles, silver in the 4x100m relay and a fifth place in her 100m final. Georgia Laven ran a fantastic race to narrowly miss a medal finishing fourth in the Under 14s Girls 800m. James Laven competed in the Under 16s Boys 2000m steeplechase final on Sunday afternoon, finishing in an excellent fourth place. Maddie Laven competed in Canberra as part of the Victorian team competing in the School Sport Australia Primary School Track and Field Cham-
Young athlete Estelle Peterson takes a leap for Yarra Ranges during the Picture: ERIKA BEDYN competition. 148099 pionships, qualifying for the Under 11s Girls 800m final on Monday. Results were not available when the report went to print, check out the club’s website for details. Next week, the regular round of little athletics competition is on Friday evening. The club needs the help of all parents to get the competition equipment set up by 6pm to ensure the program starts on time, so please get there at 5.30pm and help. The seniors are back in action on
Thursday night with round 6 of the AV Shield. Competition starts at 5.30pm at Nunawading track. If you are interested in seeing what the AV Shield competition is like, please feel free to come along and join in, you don’t have to be registered to compete. Stars recruit new stars
Damian Howard and the Milo girls, who will be playing on the real MCG during the Boxing Day test match.
Emmett drives competitive total By STEVE UTTING A HALF century to Brodie Emmett helped the Monbulk 1st XI to 235 against Mt Gate who are 1/31 in reply. The 2nd XI struggled to 143 with Matt Winzenreid making 45. The 3rds are also in a battle but have Jason Dekkers and Daniel Clark both still at the crease on half centuries. The highlight for the seniors was in the 4ths with skipper Bob Badgery making his first century for the club, which included a 131-run opening partnership with Tyren Utting. The 4ths are in a strong position with major contributions from three juniors making their senior debut. Congratulations to Michael Hill
and Rab Noonan who both took two wickets and Brayden Brockwell. The juniors were involved in a big night of cricket on Friday. The MCG was an awesome sight, with the sun shining on two new Under 10s teams that played in the middle and were surrounded by the 80 odd Milo in2 Cricketers, with plenty of other participants for grandparents’ night. A big thanks to Damian Howard, already a club life member, who continues to pour hours of his time into the club to run a fantastic Milo in2 Cricket program. The Under 14s had a bye, but the other three competitive teams are all in strong positions after the first day of their two-day matches. This Tuesday night the seniors are
playing in a Twenty20 v Belgrave at Monbulk starting at 5.30pm, so come up and support the boys. Then, on Wednesday night, the Monbulk Cricket Club is hosting a Melbourne Stars Clinic for the juniors between5.30-7.00pm, which will be followed by a club photo (seniors, juniors and Milo) and a barbecue. Scores: 1st XI - Monbulk 10/235 (B. Emmett 55, B. Martin 44*, J. Fraser 32, B. Hicken 32) v Mt Gate 1/31. 2nd XI - Monbulk 10/143 (M. Winzenreid 45) v Mt Gate 2/44. 3rd XI - Monbulk 2/159 (J. Dekkers 57*, D. Clark 55*) v Belgrave 2/211. 4th XI - Monbulk 3/254 (B. Badgery 101*, D. Howard 48*) v St
John’s Tecoma 5/107. U16 - Monbulk 1/91 (Tam Noonan 35*, Aussie Richardson 39) v Rowville 4/61 (Michael Hill 3/4). U14 - Bye. U12 - Monbulk Gold 3/132 (Jett Bolton 28*, Will Copelin 26*) v Belgrave South 4/121. U12 - Monbulk Maroon 2/117 (Ollie Grujic 27, Oskar Smethurst 17, Jake McKay 14*) v Belgrave 0/73. Non Comp U11 - Monbulk v Eildon Park (Coaches Awards - Harry, Oscar and Logan, Direct Hit run outs to Matt A and Gus). U10 - Monbulk Gold 60 v Monbulk Maroon 74 (Abel 23 incl four 6s, Max 15, Archie 15, Harry 1/3, Charlie 1/4).
THE Stars were understaffed this week as they moved into the Twenty 20 double-header round. Avoiding forfeit due to a number of players being unavailable, the club were able to entice some friends to make up the numbers, who did extremely well. Playing her first game against Bayswater Park at Guy Turner Reserve, Sarah Smith for BP made a handy 70 before she was run out by Donna Moore. Clare O’Brien was the pick of the bowlers with 1/16 off 4. Moore opened the batting with Caitlyn Parker, who, together, put on a partnership of 93 before Parker was given lbw for 45. Moore continued with the bat to score her first of two 50s for the day, being stumped for 58, while captain Jessica Day was run out for 10. Missing out by 11 runs the score was Bayswater Park 3/136 and Stars 5/125. The girls then travelled over to Proclamation Park to compete against Ringwood. Sent into bat, Day coming in at number three, made a quick 19 runs supporting the unstoppable Moore with a 65-run partnership. Moore, the pick of the batters, carried her bat for 56 runs giving her 114 runs for the day. Ringwood went to the crease chasing our 106; it came down to the wire with the home side only needing 4 runs of the last over, they passed Yarra Valley's total with two balls remaining. Ebony Camilleri took 1/21 off 3, Holly Eckhardt 1/6 off 1 and Mel Winter 1/17 off 3 ably supported by Erica Slattery behind the stumps. The highlight for the Stars was four direct hit run-outs across the day and everyone contributing. Thank you to those ladies who filled in the club hopes you stick around and always welcome anyone who would like a game. Cricket is a sport for all!
Bowler Nathan hits top form By IAN HARLEY NATHAN Caton-Robinson had a big day out as he took 6/21 for Eildon Park. Upwey were dismissed for a disappointing 100 runs at Eildon Park Reserve. At the close of play, the Panthers had secured first innings points at 3/118 with Nathan Hicks 52 not out. Trentin Scholfield went one better, backing up last week’s century with another 104. Knoxfield were in trouble at 3/7 against Belgrave but were again rescued by Scholfield and Scanlan. The Knights finished the day at 290 with Zac Wilson run out for 97. Wilson, 23, has been named in the Victorian Country Squad for the Australian country championships in Mount Gambier. Jake Best has the Bears in front by a nose in their race for a spot in the four with Knox Gardens. The Basin was bowled out by the Falcons for 232 with Best contributing 108. Support came from Danny Rundle 40 and Jayden Turcinovic 48, as Shannon Small (4/28) and Scott McInerney (4/44) took the wickets for the Falcons. Knox Gardens will be less than happy, finishing the day on 2/30. In the remaining games, Johnson Park appears to be in control of their game against top of the table Ferntree Gully. Ben Stallworthy snapped up 5 wickets for the Sharks as the Blues were dismissed for 121. Johnson Park will resume next week on 3/84. Monbulk made 235 at Windemere against Mountain Gate with Brodie Emmett top scoring with 55.
Brian Martin (44*) and Billie Hicken (32) saw the Hawks set a competitive score, while Marshall Bunting took 4 wickets for the Gators. Mountain Gate is 1/31 in reply. Norm Reeves Shield Ferntree Gully 121 (McInerney 42, Stallworthy 5/56, Wright 3/15) v Johnson Park 3/84. Monbulk 235 (B Emmett 55, B Martin 44*, J Fraser 32, B Hicken 32, M Bunting 4/38 ) v Mountain Gate 1/31. The Basin 232 (Best 108, Rundle 40, Turcinovic 48, Small 4/28, McInerney 4/44) v Knox Gardens 2/30. Upwey 100 (Caton-Robinson 6/21) v Eildon Park 3/118 (Hicks 52*).
